  1. As you're turning to Psalm 16, let me read the superscription.

  2. We're told this is a miktum of David.

  3. Sometimes we get these old Hebrew words like miktum,

  4. and the scholars don't know what they mean.

  5. It could be a type of instrument or a melody.

  6. That term, miktum, is only used five times in all of the Psalter, 150 psalms.

  7. The fact that they're so ancient and the meaning is unknown,

  8. it actually adds to the reliability, the credibility of,

  9. this is the inspired word of God to ancient prophets long ago like David,

  10. preserved by the Holy Spirit through all of the centuries for you today, his people.

  11. And so as I read this, I read it believing and hoping you'll receive it

  12. as God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  13. It's God's very own word for you, his people.

  14. So at the end, I'll say this is the word of the Lord,

  15. and you can say thanks be to God.

  16. Psalm 16, a miktum of David.

  17. Preserve me, O God, for in you I put my trust.

  18. O my soul, you have said to the Lord,

  19. you are my God.

  20. My goodness is nothing apart from you.

  21. As for the saints who are on the earth,

  22. they are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight.

  23. Verse 4,

  24. Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another God.

  25. Their drink offerings of blood I will not offer,

  26. nor take up their names on my lips.

  27. O Lord, you are the portion of my inheritance and my cup.

  28. You maintain my lot.

  29. The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places.

  30. Yes, I have a good inheritance.

  31. I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel.

  32. My heart also instructs me in the night seasons.

  33. I have set the Lord always before me because he is at my right hand.

  34. I shall not be moved.

  35. Therefore, my heart is glad and my glory rejoices.

  36. My flesh also will rest in hope,

  37. for you will not leave my soul in Sheol,

  38. nor will you allow your Holy One to see corruption.

  39. You will show me the path of life.

  40. In your presence is fullness of joy.

  41. At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

  42. The Word of the Lord.

  43. Thanks be to God.

  44. You may be seated.

  45. Let's pray and ask the Lord to illuminate the ministry of His Word.

  46. Lord, we feel it.

  47. We feel the shadows deepen.

  48. We feel the darkness all around.

  49. We feel these seasons of night.

  50. But you, Jesus Christ,

  51. you are the light of God

  52. who has shone into the darkness

  53. and the darkness has not overcome your light.

  54. We thank you that you have shown the gospel

  55. to our minds and our hearts.

  56. We thank you, Lord, that you equip your people.

  57. Your troops are willing on the day of war.

  58. We thank you that our King Jesus is alive.

  59. We thank you that you've put in the hands of your people

  60. the sword of the Spirit,

  61. the Word of God.

  62. We ask that by the power of your Spirit alone

  63. you will wield the sword,

  64. prune your branches,

  65. cut us to the heart, Lord,

  66. like only you can do.

  67. We ask this for Christ's sake.

  68. Amen.

  69. What's worth fighting for?

  70. What is it that's worth fighting for?

  71. During World War I,

  72. there was an English parliamentarian

  73. who I'm a big fan of,

  74. and his name was G.K. Chesterton.

  75. He had the fun glasses,

  76. a very heavyset man.

  77. And listen to what he said.

  78. The true soldier fights

  79. not because he hates what is in front of him,

  80. but because he loves what is behind him.

  81. You cannot love a thing

  82. without wanting to fight for it.

  83. What's worth fighting for?

  84. I think Psalm 16

  85. is a psalm about a battle

  86. against temptation.

  87. In verse 1, he uses language of taking refuge.

  88. If you're in a battle,

  89. you need to find a place

  90. you can run to and hide.

  91. The language of the cup in verse 5,

  92. you can picture like a cafeteria scene

  93. at the end of the war.

  94. All the loot of the war is piled up,

  95. and every soldier gets in line with their cup,

  96. and their portion is given to them.

  97. In verse 8, he says,

  98. because the Lord is at my right hand,

  99. I shall not be moved.

  100. Some of you played

  101. on the defensive line in football.

  102. If the Lord is at your right hand,

  103. you shall not be moved.

  104. David knows what it is to go attack

  105. and to have a strong right arm

  106. that won't get flanked.

  107. It's battle language.

  108. So, beloved congregation

  109. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  110. the message for you today

  111. and for me is

  112. how to battle temptation.

  113. How to battle temptation.

  114. Do you need help with this?

  115. I know I do.

  116. Number one,

  117. we see that the temptation

  118. to idolatry is strong.

  119. Verse 1, he says,

  120. preserve me.

  121. Watch over me, O God.

  122. The temptation to idolatry is strong.

  123. So what is he asking God

  124. to preserve him from?

  125. Preserve me.

  126. Watch over me, God.

  127. We have to drop down to verse 4

  128. to see what that is.

  129. He says,

  130. there are many within Israel

  131. who are hastening

  132. after another God.

  133. Verse 4,

  134. they drink

  135. these offerings of blood.

  136. These are people

  137. within the nation

  138. who have given up hope,

  139. who have turned

  140. and are running now

  141. after these idols

  142. of the pagans.

  143. They have these

  144. worship services

  145. with real blood.

  146. blood.

  147. Not wine

  148. or the fruit of the vine,

  149. but actual blood.

  150. Some scholars

  151. say these pagan nations

  152. would drink

  153. actual human blood

  154. as part of their ritual.

  155. And David's asking God

  156. to preserve him

  157. from that,

  158. from that temptation.

  159. He says,

  160. I will not take up

  161. their names on my lips.

  162. I can't do that.

  163. I can't be

  164. associated with that.

  165. So David is asking God

  166. to preserve him

  167. from doing

  168. what it feels like

  169. everyone else is doing,

  170. chasing after the idols

  171. of the world.

  172. Preserve me, God.

  173. Watch over me

  174. so I don't do that.

  175. The temptation

  176. to idolatry

  177. is strong.

  178. So an idol,

  179. it could be crafted

  180. out of wood,

  181. silver,

  182. gold,

  183. and then you would

  184. worship this little statue

  185. that you made

  186. of a creature.

  187. Something else

  188. that God made

  189. under the sun

  190. and now you're

  191. worshiping it

  192. as if it were

  193. the creator.

  194. But idolatry

  195. is broader than that

  196. in the Bible.

  197. Idolatry means

  198. that you are giving

  199. any creature

  200. that which

  201. only God

  202. deserves.

  203. The temptation

  204. to idolatry

  205. is strong.

  206. Matthew Henry

  207. pointed out,

  208. you and I,

  209. we have fallen

  210. into idolatry

  211. every time we have

  212. placed our greatest

  213. happiness

  214. in a creature.

  215. if we have sought

  216. the comfort

  217. or satisfaction

  218. that that good

  219. that can only

  220. be enjoyed in God

  221. might come to me

  222. from an idol.

  223. Instead,

  224. we've fallen

  225. into idolatry.

  226. Idolatry can be

  227. summarized

  228. as John did

  229. in 1 John 2.6.

  230. It could be anything

  231. that is tempting me

  232. through the lust

  233. of the flesh,

  234. the body,

  235. the lust of the eyes,

  236. and the pride

  237. of life.

  238. In other words,

  239. it's anything

  240. that's of this world,

  241. anything for the

  242. material world,

  243. for the senses,

  244. the pride of this world.

  245. The reason the battle

  246. against temptation

  247. is so strong

  248. is because it doesn't

  249. just come at us

  250. from the world,

  251. it comes from inside

  252. of us as well.

  253. That's the source

  254. of pride

  255. is my own heart.

  256. My own body

  257. craves the comforts

  258. or satisfactions

  259. of things of this world.

  260. We need to pay attention

  261. because if Calvin

  262. was right,

  263. it affects all of us.

  264. He said,

  265. every one of us

  266. is,

  267. even from his mother's womb,

  268. a master craftsman

  269. of idols.

  270. We're warned

  271. in 1 Timothy 6.9,

  272. you too can fall

  273. into temptation,

  274. into a snare,

  275. into many foolish

  276. and harmful lusts

  277. which will drown you,

  278. destroy you,

  279. and will lead you

  280. to perdition.

  281. And that's what

  282. David sees happening.

  283. People from his own country,

  284. the kingdom

  285. that God has claimed,

  286. they're following

  287. after these idols

  288. and it leads to perdition.

  289. Perdition is the utter

  290. loss of your soul.

  291. Your final happiness

  292. in a future state

  293. is utterly lost.

  294. You will instead face

  295. misery

  296. and eternal death

  297. if you chase after

  298. these idols.

  299. but the temptation

  300. is strong.

  301. So number two,

  302. how do we pray?

  303. How do we pray

  304. in a battle

  305. with temptation?

  306. If temptation

  307. were only coming at us

  308. from the world,

  309. we don't battle it,

  310. we simply flee,

  311. you know,

  312. flee temptation.

  313. But because it comes

  314. from inside of us,

  315. we have to battle this.

  316. And what weapons

  317. does God give us

  318. to battle the temptations

  319. that creep up

  320. through our own hearts?

  321. Well, I believe

  322. in verses 1, 2, and 3,

  323. he shows us how to pray

  324. under the inspiration

  325. of the Holy Spirit.

  326. Pray this way

  327. in your battle

  328. with temptation.

  329. Number one,

  330. confess your dependence

  331. on God.

  332. Look at verse 1.

  333. Preserve me,

  334. watch over me, God,

  335. because only God

  336. can preserve you.

  337. Because He watches

  338. over you.

  339. He is the one

  340. who has to hold you fast.

  341. It has to be His power

  342. to strengthen you,

  343. to preserve you.

  344. Yes, you persevere

  345. in the Christian faith,

  346. but only because God

  347. is preserving you.

  348. So confess your dependence

  349. on God.

  350. Number two,

  351. how do we pray?

  352. You assess,

  353. realistically assess,

  354. who or what

  355. is worthy of your trust.

  356. Assess who is trustworthy.

  357. He says in verse 1,

  358. in you,

  359. I put my trust.

  360. You can try putting

  361. your trust in anything else,

  362. and you will be disappointed.

  363. Only God

  364. is worthy

  365. of your full trust.

  366. Proverbs 3,

  367. 5 reminds us,

  368. trust in the Lord

  369. with all your heart,

  370. and lean not

  371. on your own understanding.

  372. 2 Peter 2,

  373. 9,

  374. the Lord knows

  375. how to deliver

  376. the godly

  377. out of temptations.

  378. He knows how.

  379. You and I

  380. don't know how.

  381. Don't trust your own heart.

  382. Trust in the Lord.

  383. He is worthy

  384. of your trust.

  385. Number three,

  386. remember God's

  387. goodness

  388. to you.

  389. Don't we so quickly forget

  390. how good

  391. God is.

  392. How good God

  393. has been to me.

  394. In verse 2,

  395. he says,

  396. O my God,

  397. O my soul,

  398. you have said

  399. to the Lord,

  400. you have said

  401. to Yahweh,

  402. you are my Lord,

  403. my captain,

  404. my master.

  405. My goodness

  406. is nothing

  407. apart from you.

  408. Do you see

  409. in verse 2,

  410. there's two words

  411. for Lord.

  412. I think most English

  413. Bibles are going

  414. to use all caps

  415. when it's Yahweh.

  416. So,

  417. Lord in all caps

  418. would be Yahweh.

  419. And if it's

  420. lower caps,

  421. it would be

  422. like a boss

  423. or a general,

  424. a commander.

  425. So,

  426. O my soul,

  427. you have said

  428. to Yahweh,

  429. you are

  430. my master.

  431. My goodness

  432. is nothing

  433. apart from you.

  434. Remember

  435. God's goodness

  436. to you.

  437. this word

  438. goodness,

  439. this is an adjective

  440. means pleasant,

  441. agreeable,

  442. or good.

  443. It's the same

  444. word that God

  445. used in Genesis 2

  446. speaking of his

  447. creation.

  448. He saw all that

  449. he had made

  450. and it was good.

  451. He made it.

  452. In fact,

  453. it was very good.

  454. The psalmist

  455. is declaring

  456. that back to God.

  457. My goodness

  458. is nothing

  459. apart from you.

  460. In the original,

  461. the wording

  462. is like this,

  463. my good

  464. is nothing

  465. beyond you.

  466. In other words,

  467. when I am

  468. in you,

  469. it is all good.

  470. The moment

  471. a part of me

  472. reaches beyond you

  473. or outside of you,

  474. there's nothing

  475. good there.

  476. Remind yourself

  477. of this truth.

  478. There is no good

  479. apart from God.

  480. Look what happens

  481. to those who chase

  482. after idols

  483. in verse 4.

  484. The sorrows

  485. of those who

  486. worship idols

  487. shall be

  488. multiplied.

  489. They turned

  490. this one thing

  491. into an idol.

  492. Gave themselves

  493. to it.

  494. Well,

  495. here comes

  496. another idol

  497. now.

  498. The need

  499. to cover it up

  500. and another

  501. to deal

  502. with that guilt

  503. and it just

  504. multiplies

  505. the sorrow

  506. of worshiping

  507. anything less

  508. than God.

  509. There is no good

  510. outside of God.

  511. I think it was

  512. the Belgic

  513. Confession

  514. said,

  515. God is the

  516. overflowing

  517. fountain

  518. of all good.

  519. There is no good

  520. outside of God.

  521. Remember

  522. God's goodness

  523. to you.

  524. And number

  525. four,

  526. how do you pray

  527. in temptation?

  528. You pray

  529. with your Bible

  530. open.

  531. Prayer

  532. is talking

  533. to God

  534. and listening

  535. to God.

  536. Look at verse

  537. three.

  538. As you pray,

  539. read these words

  540. for yourself.

  541. how God

  542. sees you.

  543. How good

  544. he is to you.

  545. In verse

  546. three,

  547. as for the

  548. saints

  549. who are

  550. on the

  551. earth,

  552. they are

  553. the excellent

  554. ones

  555. in whom

  556. is my

  557. delight,

  558. says the

  559. Lord.

  560. That's how

  561. God sees

  562. you.

  563. Read it

  564. for yourself.

  565. Psalm 16

  566. 3,

  567. read it

  568. over and

  569. over.

  570. This is

  571. how God

  572. sees you

  573. in his

  574. son.

  575. God

  576. sees you

  577. as a

  578. saint.

  579. He sees

  580. you in

  581. Christ

  582. as excellent.

  583. He sees

  584. you in

  585. Christ

  586. as his

  587. delight.

  588. That's

  589. how God

  590. sees you.

  591. Don't let

  592. Satan

  593. accuse God

  594. to you

  595. otherwise.

  596. There was

  597. a Christian

  598. in the

  599. 1200s

  600. named

  601. Bonaventure

  602. and he

  603. wrote

  604. like a

  605. journal

  606. of this

  607. experience.

  608. Satan

  609. was accusing

  610. him of

  611. previous

  612. sins

  613. and Satan

  614. was telling

  615. him,

  616. Bonaventure,

  617. you're not

  618. going to

  619. heaven.

  620. Remember

  621. your sins?

  622. Remember

  623. all that

  624. you've

  625. done?

  626. You

  627. lived a

  628. sinful

  629. life.

  630. You

  631. lived for

  632. worldly

  633. pleasure.

  634. How

  635. could

  636. God

  637. let

  638. someone

  639. like

  640. you

  641. be

  642. with

  643. him

  644. forever?

  645. And

  646. by the

  647. power of

  648. the

  649. Holy

  650. Spirit

  651. encouraging

  652. him and

  653. assuring

  654. him of

  655. salvation,

  656. Bonaventure

  657. replied to

  658. Satan,

  659. if I

  660. may not

  661. enjoy

  662. God in

  663. the next

  664. life,

  665. then let

  666. me enjoy

  667. him in

  668. this

  669. life.

  670. You

  671. battle

  672. Satan.

  673. Don't

  674. let him

  675. tempt you

  676. or accuse

  677. you.

  678. You

  679. don't

  680. want to

  681. live in

  682. sin because

  683. the goodness

  684. is in

  685. God.

  686. That's the

  687. only source.

  688. He is the

  689. fount of

  690. all good.

  691. That's how

  692. we pray

  693. from Psalm

  694. 16,

  695. 1-3

  696. in temptation.

  697. Well,

  698. with the

  699. inspiration of

  700. the Holy

  701. Spirit,

  702. what we

  703. get in

  704. verses

  705. 5-9,

  706. in my

  707. understanding,

  708. is a

  709. testimony of

  710. victory over

  711. temptation.

  712. Here's how

  713. you pray in

  714. the battle,

  715. and here's a

  716. testimony of

  717. someone on

  718. the far

  719. side who

  720. had victory

  721. over a

  722. temptation.

  723. Hear their

  724. testimony and

  725. be encouraged.

  726. Picture

  727. yourself,

  728. if you're a

  729. soldier and

  730. you're being

  731. enlisted,

  732. you're going

  733. to be sent

  734. off to

  735. war,

  736. wouldn't

  737. it be

  738. helpful to

  739. talk to

  740. a veteran?

  741. Here's

  742. someone who's

  743. been there

  744. and who

  745. came back

  746. and is

  747. alive,

  748. and he

  749. can give

  750. you this

  751. testimony of

  752. victory.

  753. You're going

  754. to be okay,

  755. son.

  756. What do we

  757. see in

  758. 5-9?

  759. The

  760. testimony is

  761. contentment

  762. first.

  763. He's

  764. content,

  765. he's full,

  766. he's blessed

  767. because he

  768. has God.

  769. Verse 5,

  770. O Lord,

  771. you are

  772. the portion

  773. of my

  774. inheritance

  775. and my

  776. cup.

  777. I went

  778. to battle

  779. in your

  780. army.

  781. I did

  782. not come

  783. back

  784. disappointed.

  785. In fact,

  786. what I

  787. got is so

  788. much better

  789. than any

  790. idol I

  791. could have

  792. chased.

  793. What I

  794. got was

  795. you.

  796. You are

  797. my portion.

  798. What goes

  799. inside my

  800. little soldier's

  801. cup is

  802. God himself.

  803. I get

  804. the Holy

  805. Spirit.

  806. I get to

  807. belong to

  808. him.

  809. I'm content.

  810. I'm full.

  811. Number

  812. two,

  813. I'm grateful.

  814. God proved

  815. himself trustworthy

  816. again.

  817. In verse 5,

  818. he says,

  819. you maintain,

  820. you uphold

  821. my lot.

  822. The land

  823. you gave

  824. me,

  825. Lord,

  826. on the

  827. other side

  828. of the

  829. battle,

  830. it's not

  831. going to

  832. be taken

  833. away.

  834. No one

  835. can threaten

  836. it.

  837. You uphold

  838. this lot,

  839. what you've

  840. given me.

  841. In verse 6,

  842. we see

  843. satisfaction.

  844. He's satisfied

  845. with all that

  846. God has

  847. provided.

  848. God is

  849. generous.

  850. God is

  851. bountiful.

  852. Just as

  853. God provided

  854. for the

  855. nation

  856. through

  857. Joshua

  858. as they

  859. came into

  860. the promised

  861. land,

  862. he uses

  863. the same

  864. language in

  865. verse 6.

  866. So listen

  867. for these

  868. words,

  869. lines that

  870. have fallen,

  871. places,

  872. and inheritance.

  873. Throughout the

  874. book of

  875. Joshua,

  876. that's how

  877. the people

  878. of Israel

  879. are given

  880. a place to

  881. live in

  882. the land

  883. God promised.

  884. In verse 6,

  885. he says,

  886. the lines have

  887. fallen to me

  888. in pleasant

  889. places.

  890. Yes,

  891. I have a

  892. good

  893. inheritance.

  894. David,

  895. now the

  896. king,

  897. he looks

  898. and he

  899. says,

  900. I can

  901. praise God

  902. just like

  903. the nation

  904. of Israel

  905. under Joshua

  906. as they

  907. entered the

  908. land.

  909. I can

  910. praise him

  911. using that

  912. same

  913. language.

  914. God has

  915. given me

  916. a dwelling

  917. place.

  918. He's provided

  919. all that I

  920. need.

  921. And it's

  922. pleasant.

  923. It's

  924. good.

  925. The fourth

  926. testimony is

  927. that God

  928. strengthens you.

  929. First,

  930. he strengthens

  931. your mind.

  932. In verse 7,

  933. he says,

  934. I will

  935. bless the

  936. Lord who

  937. has given

  938. me

  939. counsel.

  940. The Lord

  941. has strengthened

  942. my mind.

  943. I can see

  944. more clearly.

  945. He is the

  946. path in front

  947. of me,

  948. opening it

  949. up.

  950. I was

  951. dark,

  952. but now

  953. it's light.

  954. He's

  955. counseled.

  956. He's given

  957. strength to

  958. my mind

  959. so I can

  960. march

  961. following

  962. him.

  963. He also

  964. strengthens

  965. the heart.

  966. He says,

  967. my heart

  968. also instructs

  969. me in the

  970. night seasons.

  971. It's not

  972. just

  973. intellectual.

  974. I feel

  975. it.

  976. The Hebrew

  977. is the

  978. kidneys.

  979. In verse 7,

  980. my kidneys

  981. also instruct

  982. me in the

  983. night seasons.

  984. We would

  985. say my

  986. gut.

  987. My gut

  988. tells me

  989. this is the

  990. way to walk

  991. with God.

  992. I know

  993. what it is.

  994. His spirit

  995. inside me

  996. shows me.

  997. And we are

  998. strengthened for

  999. battle.

  1000. Verse 8,

  1001. I have set

  1002. the Lord

  1003. always before

  1004. me because

  1005. he is at

  1006. my right

  1007. hand.

  1008. I shall

  1009. not be

  1010. moved.

  1011. He has

  1012. already said,

  1013. I have no

  1014. goodness apart

  1015. from you.

  1016. My only

  1017. reason I

  1018. can trust

  1019. that I

  1020. have any

  1021. hope in

  1022. the battle

  1023. is because

  1024. it's God

  1025. himself as

  1026. my strength,

  1027. my right

  1028. hand.

  1029. Not only

  1030. is he

  1031. strengthened,

  1032. the testimony

  1033. is one of

  1034. happiness.

  1035. In verse 9,

  1036. therefore my

  1037. heart is

  1038. glad and

  1039. my glory

  1040. rejoices.

  1041. His heart

  1042. and his

  1043. glory,

  1044. his inner

  1045. man is

  1046. happy in

  1047. the Lord.

  1048. The idol

  1049. promises a

  1050. quick happiness,

  1051. something worldly

  1052. that's going to

  1053. make you feel

  1054. something or

  1055. feel happy.

  1056. You think in

  1057. the moment,

  1058. that's the

  1059. temptation.

  1060. And the

  1061. testimony is

  1062. when the

  1063. Lord is at

  1064. your right

  1065. hand,

  1066. that's true

  1067. happiness.

  1068. That's when

  1069. your inner

  1070. being will

  1071. rejoice.

  1072. Not only

  1073. is he

  1074. happy,

  1075. he's also

  1076. hopeful.

  1077. Verse 9,

  1078. my flesh

  1079. will also

  1080. dwell

  1081. securely

  1082. in hope.

  1083. The

  1084. Lord at

  1085. my right

  1086. hand is

  1087. my happiness

  1088. on the

  1089. inside,

  1090. my hope,

  1091. even for

  1092. my own

  1093. flesh,

  1094. my own

  1095. body as

  1096. I walk

  1097. this world.

  1098. That's the

  1099. testimony of

  1100. one who has

  1101. reached the

  1102. far side of

  1103. temptation,

  1104. one who has

  1105. been victorious.

  1106. James 1.12

  1107. echoes this,

  1108. blessed is the

  1109. man who

  1110. endures

  1111. temptation,

  1112. for when he

  1113. has been

  1114. approved,

  1115. he will

  1116. receive the

  1117. crown of

  1118. life,

  1119. which the

  1120. Lord has

  1121. promised to

  1122. those who

  1123. love him.

  1124. But now we

  1125. need to ask

  1126. the question,

  1127. who is the

  1128. one that

  1129. reaches the

  1130. far side of

  1131. temptation

  1132. victorious?

  1133. To whom

  1134. does God

  1135. promise the

  1136. spoils of

  1137. victory?

  1138. To whom

  1139. does God

  1140. promise all

  1141. of these

  1142. blessings on

  1143. the other

  1144. side of the

  1145. battle?

  1146. if you've

  1147. been following

  1148. along with

  1149. our series

  1150. in the

  1151. Psalms,

  1152. we saw

  1153. in Psalm

  1154. 14,

  1155. leading up

  1156. to this

  1157. one,

  1158. how all

  1159. have

  1160. turned

  1161. aside.

  1162. None

  1163. who do

  1164. good,

  1165. no,

  1166. not one.

  1167. So who

  1168. can receive

  1169. all the

  1170. blessings

  1171. of the

  1172. battle?

  1173. In Psalm

  1174. 15,

  1175. right before

  1176. this,

  1177. it's who

  1178. may dwell

  1179. with God?

  1180. We sang

  1181. the last

  1182. two weeks,

  1183. Psalm 24,

  1184. who may

  1185. ascend the

  1186. holy hill.

  1187. And before

  1188. we answer

  1189. that question

  1190. directly,

  1191. look at

  1192. verse 11

  1193. of our

  1194. sermon text,

  1195. Psalm 16,

  1196. 11.

  1197. The person

  1198. in the

  1199. temptation

  1200. gives a

  1201. testimony

  1202. of fullness

  1203. of joy

  1204. and pleasures

  1205. forevermore.

  1206. So while

  1207. you're in the

  1208. battle,

  1209. fighting temptation

  1210. in this world,

  1211. there's also

  1212. a foretaste

  1213. of something

  1214. much more

  1215. glorious.

  1216. Verse 11,

  1217. in your

  1218. presence is

  1219. fullness

  1220. of joy.

  1221. There's no

  1222. room for

  1223. any sadness.

  1224. There's no

  1225. room for

  1226. distraction.

  1227. Don't we

  1228. long for

  1229. that?

  1230. But the

  1231. longing of

  1232. the heart

  1233. is the

  1234. eternity

  1235. that only

  1236. God can

  1237. give.

  1238. And it

  1239. grows.

  1240. He says,

  1241. at your

  1242. right hand

  1243. are pleasures

  1244. forevermore

  1245. uninterrupted,

  1246. unbroken.

  1247. As we're

  1248. working with

  1249. some of

  1250. our folks

  1251. that are

  1252. regular

  1253. attenders

  1254. toward

  1255. baptism,

  1256. this is an

  1257. important

  1258. question.

  1259. I'm saved.

  1260. I'm a

  1261. disciple of

  1262. Christ.

  1263. Will I

  1264. still sin?

  1265. If I get

  1266. baptized now,

  1267. what happens

  1268. if I sin

  1269. after I get

  1270. baptized?

  1271. baptized?

  1272. And we

  1273. wrestle with

  1274. this.

  1275. As we've

  1276. talked with

  1277. the men

  1278. on Wednesday

  1279. mornings,

  1280. we know

  1281. it's only

  1282. the power

  1283. of God

  1284. to sanctify

  1285. a Christian.

  1286. And it's

  1287. the power

  1288. of God

  1289. working in

  1290. us,

  1291. but yet

  1292. in this

  1293. world,

  1294. it's a

  1295. battle.

  1296. It's a

  1297. battle.

  1298. Why does

  1299. God leave

  1300. us to

  1301. battle so

  1302. hard in

  1303. this world?

  1304. And I

  1305. love how

  1306. our

  1307. confession of

  1308. faith,

  1309. the second

  1310. London,

  1311. chapter 5,

  1312. paragraph 5,

  1313. explains the

  1314. full counsel of

  1315. biblical truth.

  1316. The most

  1317. wise,

  1318. righteous,

  1319. and gracious

  1320. God does

  1321. oftentimes leave

  1322. for a season

  1323. His own

  1324. children to

  1325. manifold temptations

  1326. and the

  1327. corruptions of

  1328. their own

  1329. hearts.

  1330. Why?

  1331. To chastise

  1332. them for

  1333. their former

  1334. sins,

  1335. to discover

  1336. unto them

  1337. the hidden

  1338. strength of

  1339. corruption and

  1340. deceitfulness of

  1341. their hearts,

  1342. that they may

  1343. be humbled,

  1344. and to raise

  1345. them to a

  1346. more close

  1347. and constant

  1348. dependence for

  1349. their support

  1350. upon Himself,

  1351. and to make

  1352. them more

  1353. watchful against

  1354. all future

  1355. occasions of

  1356. sin, and for

  1357. other just and

  1358. holy ends, so

  1359. that whatsoever

  1360. befalls any of

  1361. God's elect is

  1362. by His

  1363. appointment for

  1364. His glory and

  1365. for their

  1366. good.

  1367. Amen?

  1368. Well, let's

  1369. answer the

  1370. question now,

  1371. to whom does

  1372. God promise the

  1373. spoils of

  1374. victory?

  1375. look at

  1376. verse 10,

  1377. Psalm 16,

  1378. 10.

  1379. You will

  1380. not leave

  1381. my soul

  1382. in Sheol.

  1383. Sheol is

  1384. the abode

  1385. or the

  1386. dwelling place

  1387. of the

  1388. dead.

  1389. It's where

  1390. the dead

  1391. bodies go

  1392. and stay.

  1393. Nor will

  1394. you allow

  1395. your Holy

  1396. One to

  1397. see corruption.

  1398. You will

  1399. not let

  1400. your Holy

  1401. One undergo

  1402. decay.

  1403. We need

  1404. to let the

  1405. Scriptures

  1406. interpret the

  1407. Scriptures.

  1408. As the

  1409. Puritan said,

  1410. only diamond

  1411. can cut

  1412. diamond.

  1413. So who is

  1414. Psalm 16

  1415. ultimately

  1416. pointing to?

  1417. Well, Peter

  1418. stood up in

  1419. Acts 2,

    Acts 2:25

  1420. verse 25,

  1421. and he

  1422. preached,

  1423. quoting David,

  1424. who had said

  1425. about the

  1426. Lord Jesus

  1427. Christ,

  1428. I saw the

  1429. Lord always

  1430. before me

  1431. because He

  1432. is at my

  1433. right hand.

  1434. I will

  1435. not be

  1436. shaken.

  1437. So the

  1438. Bible

  1439. interprets

  1440. Psalm 16

  1441. as pointing

  1442. to Jesus

  1443. Christ.

  1444. The only

  1445. one to

  1446. whom God

  1447. can truly

  1448. promise the

  1449. spoils of

  1450. the victory

  1451. justly is

  1452. the Holy

  1453. One.

  1454. It's the

  1455. one whose

  1456. body will

  1457. not see

  1458. corruption

  1459. and decay.

  1460. And the

  1461. good news

  1462. for us

  1463. is that

  1464. because Christ

  1465. fulfilled

  1466. Psalm 16,

  1467. He is the

  1468. only source

  1469. of power

  1470. for us

  1471. now in

  1472. this battle

  1473. that we

  1474. walk on

  1475. earth.

  1476. Our

  1477. righteousness,

  1478. our

  1479. sanctification

  1480. is nothing

  1481. apart from

  1482. Christ.

  1483. Amen?

  1484. Let me

  1485. walk through

  1486. ten ways

  1487. our Lord

  1488. Jesus Christ

  1489. became your

  1490. goodness and

  1491. mine, your

  1492. righteousness,

  1493. your source

  1494. of power and

  1495. victory.

  1496. Number one,

  1497. Jesus Christ

  1498. became your

  1499. righteousness when

  1500. He was tempted

  1501. as we read

  1502. in Luke 4.

  1503. Why was

  1504. Jesus tempted?

  1505. He lacked

  1506. nothing.

  1507. He's God.

  1508. It's because

  1509. we often

  1510. don't put our

  1511. trust in God

  1512. to preserve

  1513. us.

  1514. That's why

  1515. Jesus had to

  1516. took on

  1517. flesh and

  1518. He had to

  1519. pray what

  1520. we could

  1521. never pray

  1522. perfectly.

  1523. Preserve me,

  1524. O God,

  1525. for in You

  1526. I put my

  1527. trust.

  1528. Number two,

  1529. because we

  1530. need His

  1531. righteousness,

  1532. since we

  1533. often forget

  1534. that our

  1535. goodness is

  1536. nothing apart

  1537. from Him,

  1538. Jesus Christ

  1539. was born of

  1540. the Virgin

  1541. Mary,

  1542. not inheriting

  1543. any sin

  1544. from man.

  1545. And Jesus

  1546. Christ became

  1547. the good

  1548. new creation.

  1549. In Christ,

  1550. you are saints

  1551. on this earth,

  1552. you are excellent

  1553. ones,

  1554. and you are

  1555. God's delight.

  1556. Number three,

  1557. because our

  1558. idolatry

  1559. multiplies our

  1560. sorrows,

  1561. you picture a

  1562. pile of

  1563. damp filth

  1564. with cockroaches

  1565. all around it.

  1566. being multiplied,

  1567. growing,

  1568. becoming a

  1569. heap,

  1570. that's what

  1571. it is to

  1572. worship an

  1573. idol.

  1574. And because

  1575. that's the

  1576. state that

  1577. we're in,

  1578. we're buried

  1579. under that

  1580. sorrow of

  1581. sin,

  1582. Jesus Christ

  1583. became the

  1584. man of

  1585. sorrows.

  1586. He made

  1587. your ugly

  1588. sin and

  1589. mine his

  1590. own,

  1591. so that he

  1592. could turn

  1593. around and

  1594. share the

  1595. blessings,

  1596. the spoils

  1597. of war,

  1598. the portion

  1599. and the cup

  1600. that he

  1601. merited on

  1602. our behalf,

  1603. freely,

  1604. by grace,

  1605. to you who

  1606. receive it.

  1607. Number four,

  1608. because we

  1609. were prodigals,

  1610. we spat

  1611. at our

  1612. father's

  1613. kindness,

  1614. our Lord

  1615. Jesus Christ

  1616. became the

  1617. true and

  1618. greater Joshua,

  1619. Yeshua.

  1620. He gave us a

  1621. perfect inheritance.

  1622. What we

  1623. inherit in

  1624. Christ is

  1625. marked out by

  1626. generous lines

  1627. over pleasant

  1628. places.

  1629. and even

  1630. under the

  1631. son,

  1632. we enjoy

  1633. his

  1634. providence.

  1635. We take

  1636. delight in

  1637. all that

  1638. he's given

  1639. us to

  1640. be able to

  1641. enjoy and

  1642. remembering that

  1643. there's no

  1644. good apart

  1645. from him.

  1646. Number five,

  1647. because we

  1648. often lean on

  1649. our own

  1650. understanding,

  1651. our Lord

  1652. Jesus Christ

  1653. walked in

  1654. perfect step

  1655. with the

  1656. Holy Spirit.

  1657. Verse seven,

  1658. the Spirit

  1659. counseled him

  1660. in the flesh

  1661. so that the

  1662. Holy Spirit

  1663. can now

  1664. dwell in

  1665. our hearts

  1666. and instruct

  1667. us in

  1668. those night

  1669. seasons as

  1670. well.

  1671. We can

  1672. receive the

  1673. Holy Spirit

  1674. because God

  1675. counts us

  1676. holy in

  1677. Christ.

  1678. Because we

  1679. are often

  1680. moved by

  1681. the idols

  1682. of our

  1683. own heart,

  1684. our Lord

  1685. Jesus became

  1686. our righteousness.

  1687. In the

  1688. words of

  1689. verse eight,

  1690. he set

  1691. God always

  1692. before his

  1693. sight and

  1694. with the

  1695. Holy Spirit

  1696. at his

  1697. right hand,

  1698. our Lord

  1699. Jesus Christ

  1700. was never

  1701. moved,

  1702. not even

  1703. in the

  1704. final breaths

  1705. on the

  1706. cross.

  1707. He would

  1708. not

  1709. disobey.

  1710. He would

  1711. fulfill all

  1712. righteousness

  1713. for us.

  1714. Number seven,

  1715. while we were

  1716. hopeless,

  1717. shameful,

  1718. and sad,

  1719. our Lord

  1720. Jesus Christ

  1721. endured

  1722. the cross

  1723. for the joy

  1724. set before

  1725. him,

  1726. despising

  1727. its shame

  1728. so that

  1729. he can now

  1730. sing over

  1731. you and

  1732. me.

  1733. Be

  1734. glad of

  1735. heart

  1736. with me.

  1737. Rejoice

  1738. in my

  1739. glory.

  1740. I died

  1741. and I

  1742. rose

  1743. hoping for

  1744. you.

  1745. Number eight,

  1746. because the

  1747. grave and

  1748. death are

  1749. the wages

  1750. that our

  1751. sins deserve,

  1752. the last

  1753. enemy to

  1754. be destroyed

  1755. is death.

  1756. Our Lord

  1757. Jesus Christ

  1758. died and

  1759. was buried

  1760. trusting,

  1761. verse 10,

  1762. that God

  1763. will not

  1764. leave his

  1765. soul in

  1766. the realm

  1767. of the

  1768. dead.

  1769. Our Lord

  1770. Jesus Christ

  1771. became God's

  1772. holy one.

  1773. He was

  1774. buried,

  1775. trusting that

  1776. God would

  1777. not let

  1778. his body

  1779. see decay

  1780. or corruption.

  1781. Number nine,

  1782. because we

  1783. were blind

  1784. sheep without

  1785. a shepherd,

  1786. our Lord

  1787. Jesus Christ

  1788. sent his

  1789. Holy Spirit

  1790. to show us

  1791. in verse 11

  1792. the path

  1793. of life

  1794. and how

  1795. only in

  1796. Christ's

  1797. presence is

  1798. fullness of

  1799. joy.

  1800. Because Christ

  1801. is seated

  1802. at the

  1803. right hand

  1804. of God,

  1805. we are

  1806. with him

  1807. in the

  1808. presence of

  1809. God where

  1810. there are

  1811. pleasures

  1812. forevermore.

  1813. Number

  1814. ten,

  1815. Jesus

  1816. battled to

  1817. be our

  1818. vine,

  1819. truly God,

  1820. truly man,

  1821. the only

  1822. mediator,

  1823. so that we

  1824. could abide

  1825. in him and

  1826. have communion

  1827. with God.

  1828. And as we

  1829. abide in

  1830. Christ,

  1831. we experience

  1832. the truth of

  1833. second Peter

  1834. that his

  1835. divine power

  1836. in fact

  1837. gives us

  1838. all that we

  1839. need for

  1840. life and

  1841. godliness

  1842. through the

  1843. knowledge of

  1844. him,

  1845. Jesus Christ

  1846. who called

  1847. us.

  1848. Our only

  1849. source of

  1850. power to

  1851. have victory

  1852. over temptation

  1853. is union

  1854. to Christ.

  1855. So beloved

  1856. congregation

  1857. of our

  1858. Lord Jesus,

  1859. God proved

  1860. by the

  1861. life,

  1862. death,

  1863. and

  1864. resurrection

  1865. of his

  1866. son,

  1867. that you

  1868. are worth

  1869. fighting for.

  1870. Jesus Christ

  1871. is the true

  1872. soldier.

  1873. It's true

  1874. that you

  1875. cannot love

  1876. a thing

  1877. without wanting

  1878. to fight

  1879. for it.

  1880. And our

  1881. Lord Jesus

  1882. Christ,

  1883. he fought

  1884. for you

  1885. and for

  1886. me because

  1887. he loves

  1888. you.

  1889. He took

  1890. on flesh

  1891. and battled

  1892. every temptation

  1893. that we

  1894. will face

  1895. and he

  1896. was victorious.

  1897. He leaves

  1898. his Holy

  1899. Spirit in

  1900. you.

  1901. He is at

  1902. your right

  1903. hand.

  1904. He is your

  1905. strength.

  1906. And he

  1907. reminds you

  1908. that in

  1909. his presence

  1910. are pleasures

  1911. forevermore.

  1912. So here's

  1913. the secret

  1914. to sanctification.

  1915. Every time

  1916. you believe

  1917. him and

  1918. trust him,

  1919. the battle

  1920. is won.

  1921. Let's pray.

  1922. Amen.

  1923. Lord, we

  1924. praise you

  1925. for your

  1926. righteousness.

  1927. We thank

  1928. you, Lord,

  1929. that you

  1930. battled to

  1931. save a

  1932. people for

  1933. yourself.

  1934. Lord, we

  1935. pray that you

  1936. will preserve

  1937. us when

  1938. Satan wants

  1939. to accuse

  1940. you to us

  1941. that we'll

  1942. remember how

  1943. good you

  1944. are and

  1945. how there

  1946. is no

  1947. pleasure

  1948. that earth

  1949. can offer

  1950. that could

  1951. even come

  1952. close to

  1953. the glory

  1954. of being

  1955. in your

  1956. presence

  1957. forevermore.

  1958. We trust

  1959. you, Lord,

  1960. that your

  1961. spirit will

  1962. preserve us

  1963. and remind

  1964. us that

  1965. you are

  1966. good.

  1967. And in

  1968. Christ, we

  1969. will desire

  1970. more and

  1971. more to

  1972. walk by

  1973. your power

  1974. in us.

  1975. For your

  1976. glory we

  1977. pray.

  1978. Amen.
