  1. And but there is no, there can be no repentance without a

  2. recognition of sin. And but then also that he died

  3. according to the scriptures. And we looked at a lot of

  4. different prophecies last week that prophesied that Jesus was

  5. going to come, that prophesied that he was going to die, that

  6. prophesied how he was going to die.

  7. Many of those things that were that were given to us in Psalms,

  8. in Isaiah, we're all proven to be true.

  9. And not just in Matthew, you know, we only looked at Matthew,

  10. but Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, all of them mention it.

  11. Of course, then even Paul and Peter and others mentioned them

  12. as well. Different things that came true

  13. as a result of a fulfillment of prophecy.

  14. Every single thing that was prophesied about Jesus Christ

  15. came true. Not one of them failed.

  16. Which is an amazing, amazing thing, considering how many

  17. years, the period of time over which the Bible was written.

  18. There's no way that there could have been, you know,

  19. collaboration. And you write this and then

  20. we'll write this. There's no way that it's

  21. possible they were separated by hundreds and even thousands of

  22. years. And so it's an amazing thing to

  23. find out that the Bible is true. So we find out, first of all,

  24. that Christ died for our sins. But then #2 and this is on page

  25. 22, Christ was buried. And I'll, I'll see about getting

  26. a few people to read tonight. We do have some verses, but most

  27. of them are all kind of in the same general area.

  28. So maybe a little bit easier for us all to just kind of turn to

  29. as many of these as we can. But First Corinthians chapter

    1 Corinthians 15:4

  30. 15, verse 4 says that and that he was buried.

  31. Now his burial, let's turn over to John chapter.

  32. Keep a, keep a bookmark or ribbon or something there in

  33. First Corinthians 15, because we are going to come back to it in

  34. a few different spots there in First Corinthians 15.

  35. But John, chapter 19, his burial proved that he really died.

    John 19 chapter mention

  36. And that sounds silly to say that of what?

  37. Why wouldn't you bury somebody that died?

  38. But there's there are people out there who is it's known as the

  39. swoon theory. In other words, that Jesus kind

  40. of just went into a coma for a few days and he woke up out of

  41. that coma and that's what allowed him to come up out of

  42. the ground. He swooned.

  43. He wasn't really dead, but the fact that he was buried, OK, He

  44. didn't merely faint. He didn't, He didn't merely

  45. appear to die, as some false teachers have claimed.

  46. The reason the soldiers didn't break Jesus's legs is because he

  47. was already dead. And by the way, that was one of

  48. the prophecies that was fulfilled.

  49. Not a bone of his would be broken.

  50. They pierced his side and the Bible says the blood in the

  51. water came out. They broke the legs of the other

  52. thieves. Now, the reason why it would it

  53. was necessary for them to break somebody's legs is because

  54. essentially the way that you died during a crucifixion was

  55. from asphyxiation. Now, obviously there was a lot

  56. of blood loss and everything else.

  57. Jesus was whipped more than than a normal prisoner would have

  58. been whipped. He was forced to carry his cross

  59. and and that may be one of the reasons why he died sooner than

  60. the than the thieves that were crucified on either side of him.

  61. But essentially what happened is when you're hanging there on the

  62. cross, you get to the point where you're sinking down so far

  63. that you, you, you really can't. You're gasping for breath.

  64. Well, obviously your feet have been nailed through them too.

  65. And so it's so excruciatingly painful to push yourself back up

  66. just to get a breath that many of them would hang there as long

  67. as they could. And the breasts would get more

  68. and more shallow until eventually they they were going

  69. to die if they didn't push themselves up.

  70. And so they did. They would push themselves up

  71. and then they begin that whole slow process all over again.

  72. But when they were ready to take them down off the cross, they

  73. would break their legs. Now you can no longer push

  74. yourself up and you're going to die from that asphyxiation.

  75. And that's, that's, that was just a horrible, horrible death.

  76. It was the, IT was one of the worst things that they could

  77. come up with as far as the Romans, as far as how they could

  78. cause somebody extreme suffering while they were dying.

  79. Many times then the, the bodies would would stay up on the cross

  80. sometimes for days while they're waiting for death to come.

  81. And, and, and sometimes even after death came, they would

  82. still leave the bodies up there for days.

  83. The dogs would come and many times they were lower to the

  84. ground. The dogs would come and start

  85. eating the body. And especially if it was, if it

  86. was a criminal that didn't really have much of A family or

  87. anything, somebody had to come claim the body eventually would

  88. get thrown into a pauper's grave if it didn't, but the body was

  89. desecrated. They, they left him up there on

  90. those crosses many times as an example to other people.

  91. You don't want this to happen to you.

  92. And, and, and so that's, that's, that's why they would have done

  93. that. They came, they broke the legs

  94. of both of the thieves that were crucified on the other side of

  95. Christ. But they didn't have to break

  96. his legs. Why?

  97. Because he was already dead. If he was in a coma, he still

  98. would have been breathing. Even if he was just unconscious,

  99. he still would have been breathing and they would have

  100. broken his legs and made sure that he was dead before they

  101. brought him off of the cross. Certainly they were not going to

  102. allow this man, the one that they considered to be a

  103. blasphemy, blasphemer, and and Public Enemy #1 to come down off

  104. of that cross without being dead.

  105. And so they made sure that he was dead.

  106. And the fact that they didn't break his legs just goes to

  107. prove that the Roman soldiers were convinced that he was dead

  108. before they put him in that in that grave.

  109. John chapter 19 and verse #31 the Jews therefore, because it

    John 19 chapter mention

  110. was the preparation that the body should not remain upon the

  111. cross on the Sabbath day. Now this is something that we're

  112. going to come back to because this is important for that

  113. Sabbath day was in high day. That's important.

  114. We saw Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they

  115. might be taken away. Then came the soldiers and break

  116. the legs of the 1st and of the other, which was crucified with

  117. him. But when they came to Jesus and

  118. saw that He was dead already, they break not His legs, but one

  119. of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side and forthwith

  120. came there out blood and water. So His burial proved that He

  121. really died. He was already dead when they

  122. got to Him. Then the Bible says this in

  123. Matthew chapter 12. Let's turn over there, Matthew

Matthew 12 chapter mention Matthew 12 chapter mention

  124. chapter 12 and verse #40 that He was in the grave for three days

  125. and three nights. And this is significant as well.

  126. Now this is also, This is where Catholic tradition differs from

  127. the word of God and why it's also very important that even

  128. Baptist tradition be not justified, but I guess maybe

  129. justified is the right word, corroborated if you will, with

  130. the word of God. We need to make sure that we're

  131. not doing it just because this is what everybody has already

  132. always done. We're not just saying it this

  133. just because this is what somebody has always said.

  134. Now, you know that we celebrate Good Friday, right?

  135. Jesus Christ was crucified on Friday.

  136. He came up out of the grave on Sunday.

  137. And so we celebrate Good Friday. No possible way, no possible way

  138. that Jesus could have been crucified on a Friday if you

  139. follow what the Bible says. Now here's what the Bible says

  140. in Matthew chapter 12 and verse #40 For as Jonas Jonah was 3

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  141. days and three nights in the whale's belly, so shall the Son

  142. of Man be 3 days and three nights in the heart of the

  143. earth. Now we know that Jesus rose from

  144. the dead early on Sunday morning.

  145. The Bible says that in Luke 24, if he was in the grave for three

  146. days and three nights, he died either on Wednesday or Thursday.

  147. Now it's a false idea then that the Catholic Church has come up

  148. with. I have no idea what they have to

  149. gain by having Jesus Christ crucified on Friday.

  150. But if you, if he, if he died on Friday and was put in the grave

  151. on Friday afternoon, he would have been there Friday night and

  152. he would have been there Saturday night.

  153. And that's it. No possible way that he could

  154. have been in the grave for three nights.

  155. Now you could say, well, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, you could get

  156. 3 parts of days there and say that he was in the grave for

  157. three days. But you cannot get 3 nights by

  158. having somebody crucified on Friday.

  159. Now let me give you a few things here that might be interesting

  160. to you. I think Jesus was was crucified

  161. on a Wednesday. I'm not going to argue with

  162. somebody that thinks it's Thursday, but let's turn over to

  163. Matthew chapter 27. Does it really matter?

    Matthew 27 chapter mention

  164. Probably not. The thing that matters is that

  165. Jesus Christ did die and he was put in the grave and he rose

  166. from the dead. But I think it's interesting to

  167. to go through this anyway. We just read in Matthew chapter

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  168. 12 and verse #40 that the Bible says for as Jonas was 3 days and

  169. three nights in the wills belly, so shall the Son of Man be 3

  170. days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

  171. Had the scriptures just said three days then I can understand

  172. where somebody would say Friday. But when you say 3 days and

  173. three nights, that seems to indicate that it has to be 324

  174. hour periods, right? Why do you say day and night if

  175. you didn't mean a full day right?

  176. 24 hour periods that Jesus was in the ground.

  177. Now there's three different things that are at play here

  178. when it comes to the, the, the, the, the way that a day was

  179. calculated. The the Roman day began at 6:00

  180. AM OK, so for us, our day begins when 12:00 AM and it ends at

  181. 12:00 AM the next day, right? That's how our day goes.

  182. The Roman day actually began at 6:00 AM and ended at 6:00 AM the

  183. next morning. The Jewish day began at sunset

  184. and went through sunset of the next day.

  185. OK, now Matthew chapter 2027 now verse and actually Matthew 27,

  186. Mark 15, and Luke 23 all say the exact same thing here.

  187. I would say that Jesus Christ was placed on the cross at about

  188. 9:00 in the morning somewhere around there.

  189. And we and we can see that from Matthew chapter 27 verse 45.

    Matthew 27:45

  190. Now from the 6th hour there was darkness over all the land until

  191. the 9th hour. The 6th hour was noon.

  192. The 9th hour was 3:00. And so the because if you if you

  193. start your day at 6:00 in the morning the way the Jews did the

  194. the first hour would it be 6:00. The third hour would be 9:00,

  195. the 6th hour would be noon, right?

  196. The 9th hour would be 3, and so on.

  197. It would just keep going on that way.

  198. So when the Bible says that the darkness came over all the land,

  199. that was Jesus was already Cruz. He had already died by that

  200. point, right? So if you consider that he was

  201. put on the cross maybe somewhere around 9:00 in the morning.

  202. He hung there until he died around noon.

  203. The darkness came over the face of the earth.

  204. The dead came up out of the graves.

  205. The veil in the temple was rent. All of those things happen.

  206. The Bible says that there was darkness for the space of those

  207. three hours. The 6th hour to the 9th hour,

  208. noon to 3:00. That's when Jesus, about the 9th

  209. hour. I'm sorry.

  210. Yeah, I said that the 6th hour, darkness came over.

  211. He died at the 9th hour. My God.

  212. My God, why has thou forsaken me?

  213. Some of them heard that, thought he was calling for Elijah.

  214. They came and brought water. I mean vinegar and put it up to

  215. his mouth and everything else. Verse #50 The Bible says Jesus,

  216. when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the

  217. ghost. He died.

  218. And so then verse 57 the Bible says this is Matthew 27.

  219. When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathea

  220. named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus's disciple.

  221. He went to Pilate and begged the body of Jesus.

  222. Then Pilate commanded the then then Pilate commanded the body

  223. to be delivered. And when Joseph had taken the

  224. body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth and laid it in his

  225. own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock.

  226. He wrote a great stone and so on.

  227. All of those things that are happening there's, that was

  228. evening by that point, right? The Jewish, the Jewish day

  229. started at sunset. And so you'd have to say that

  230. somewhere around 4:00, five o'clock, maybe even 6:00 when

  231. Jesus was actually put into the grave, right?

  232. He was still hanging on the cross at 3:00 in the afternoon.

  233. They had to go request the body. They had to take the body down.

  234. They had to prepare the body for burial and they had to put it in

  235. the grave and, and maybe they did it quickly and they could

  236. get that done within three hours.

  237. Now, if you know, if you remember, I should say from the

  238. pictures in the diagrams that I showed you, when, when we were

  239. going through all this stuff about Israel, the place where

  240. Jesus was crucified and the place where Jesus was buried

  241. would have been very close to each other.

  242. So it was not like they had to take him across town and, you

  243. know, transport his body and all of those things.

  244. They would literally have taken him off the cross, walked across

  245. the garden, and put him in the grave, right?

  246. So it wouldn't have taken them that long to do all of those

  247. things. But all of that to say that

  248. probably somewhere around 4-5, maybe even 6:00 of that day,

  249. whatever day that happened to be, Wednesday or Thursday, Jesus

  250. was put in the ground. I'm saying that I believe that

  251. it was Wednesday. And so I'm going to say Jesus

  252. was put into the ground or put into that grave at about 5:00 on

  253. Wednesday night. The Bible says this in Leviticus

    Leviticus 23 chapter mention

  254. chapter 23 and verse #5 through 7, that the first day of the

  255. Feast of Unleavened Bread was a Sabbath day, and it was actually

  256. a high day. The Bible says that John chapter

    John 19 chapter mention

  257. 19. Let's go back over there, All

  258. right? John chapter 19.

    John 19 chapter mention

  259. This was not just the beginning of a regular Sabbath.

  260. John chapter 19. A regular Sabbath would have

    John 19 chapter mention

  261. begun at sunset on Friday, but this was a high Sabbath, and so

  262. the Passover Sabbath came on Thursday that week.

  263. And that's what the Bible says in John chapter 19 and verse #31

    John 19 chapter mention

  264. I'm in verse chapter 20, John chapter 19 and verse 31.

    John 19 chapter mention

  265. The Jews, therefore, because it was the preparation that the

  266. body should not remain upon the cross on the Sabbath day, for

  267. that Sabbath day was in high day.

  268. It was not a normal Sabbath. It was the Sabbath that actually

  269. started the day before that. So at about sunset on Thursday,

  270. he had been in the grave for one day and one night, right?

  271. Because by sunset you would, you would assume by sunset on

  272. Wednesday night he was in the ground.

  273. Wednesday night to Thursday night would have been one night

  274. and one day. Thursday night to Friday night

  275. would have been two nights and two days.

  276. Friday night to Saturday night would have been three nights and

  277. three days. And somewhere after that Jesus

  278. rose from the dead. Right when the ladies got there,

  279. when the women got there to and the Bible says they they rose up

  280. early that Sunday morning and they went to the grave.

  281. He was already gone, right? He was already gone, so the only

  282. way that you can make Thursday work would be all right.

  283. You counted a part of a day for Thursday, Thursday night, Friday

  284. night, Saturday night, right? If he went into the grave on

  285. Thursday night, you have, you have Thursday, Thursday night,

  286. Friday night, Saturday night. It just, it doesn't give you

  287. enough time for that to happen. It would have to be some time on

  288. Sunday if you're talking. And now this is what I'm saying.

  289. I'm not going to argue with somebody that says they believe

  290. Jesus was, was, was died on a Thursday because the Bible does

  291. not say that it was 24. I mean, it was 3 literal 24 hour

  292. periods that Jesus was was in the, you know, in the grave.

  293. You assume that because it says days and nights, three days,

  294. three nights. You assume that it was a 24 hour

  295. period. And that's where I come up with

  296. Wednesday. If you said Thursday and you

  297. wanted to count a part of a day on on on Sunday, then that's

  298. that's fine. I'm not going to argue with you

  299. against that, argue against you with that.

  300. But the woman came early on Sunday morning our time he was

  301. already gone. So the expression on the third

  302. day in the Gospels referring to his resurrection in our day in

  303. our in our terminology would have been after the third day.

  304. We would we would say after the third day he rose again.

  305. And so Christ was, I believe, crucified on Wednesday.

  306. Maybe you could say that he was crucified on Thursday.

  307. There's one thing that I do know he was not crucified on Friday.

  308. No way that he could have been crucified on Friday because that

  309. was that there's, there's the only nights that you can get

  310. would be Friday night and Saturday night.

  311. And that doesn't leave us enough time.

  312. He didn't raise on Monday morning.

  313. He rose on Sunday morning. The Bible says the first day of

  314. the week. So interesting little study

  315. there. He died either.

  316. And that's where brother Cloud there in the notes says that he

  317. died either on Wednesday or Thursday.

  318. I think there's compelling, compelling arguments for both.

  319. There's there's compelling arguments for Wednesday or

  320. Thursday, but I don't there's no, there's nothing that allows

  321. us to say that Christ was crucified on Friday.

  322. But then the Bible says that his burial also fulfilled prophecy.

  323. It was according to the scriptures.

  324. If you go, you don't have to go back over there.

  325. In fact, let's go to Isaiah 53. But the Bible says that he was

  326. buried and that he rose again the third day according to the

  327. Scriptures. So his burial was also in

  328. fulfillment of prophecy. Isaiah chapter 53, one of the

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  329. one of the greatest passages of now talking about Christ in the

  330. Old Testament, I believe Isaiah chapter 53 talking all about the

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  331. what he was going to suffer for us.

  332. But Isaiah chapter 53 and verse #9 the Bible says and he made

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  333. his grave with the wicked and with the rich in his death

  334. because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his

  335. mouth. So that prophecy that was

  336. written, he says here about 710 years before Jesus was born, it

  337. was fulfilled when Jesus was taken down off the cross by

  338. Joseph of Arimathea, who the Bible says was a very rich man.

  339. Put Joe's put Jesus's body into a into a grave, which the Bible

  340. also said wherein never man was laid and he stayed there.

  341. Now I will say this. Why is I mean, what is the

  342. significance of that? It's not like you unbury

  343. somebody and put another body in it, right?

  344. I mean, you think about how people are buried today.

  345. Obviously you're going to put them in a new grave.

  346. Not so in the Old Testament times.

  347. They would dig a cave into the, OR dig a hollow out the side of

  348. a cave or just hew hew something out of a rock if if it was solid

  349. rock there. And what they would do is they

  350. would put that body in there for about a year and after a year

  351. the decomposition had all pretty much taken place.

  352. They would go in there and they would gather up the bones of

  353. that person who had died and they would put it in what was

  354. called an ossuary or a bone box. And then they would put it

  355. wherever they wanted it to be. They usually would not leave it

  356. in the in the grave. They would take it out and put

  357. it in different places, which is probably what they did when they

  358. carried Joseph's body out of Egypt, right.

  359. It was probably just a bone box. And a bone box is about the

  360. size, probably about the size of the pulpit in width and in

  361. depth. And, and usually about this big

  362. or so really not all that big. And, and depending on how

  363. wealthy you were, that that determined what kind of, you

  364. know, what kind of ossuary you had and what it was decorated

  365. like and all of those things. But that's why it's significant

  366. when you say wherein never man was laid, nobody who had ever

  367. been laid in the grave that Jesus was laid in Joseph of

  368. Arimathea as a wealthy man would have dug that for himself and

  369. for his family, and nobody had been buried in it yet.

  370. And so it's very interesting that way as well.

  371. But that was prophesied 710 years before Jesus actually was,

  372. was buried in that grave by Joseph of Arimathea.

  373. Now the other thing then #3 the third part of the Scripture, as

  374. we read in First Corinthians chapter 15, verse 4, and that he

    1 Corinthians 15:4

  375. rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.

  376. His resurrection was prophesied in Psalm 16 and verse #10 Let's

  377. go and look at that. That was actually written 1000

  378. years before Jesus came. Psalm 16 and verse #10 For thou

  379. wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine

  380. Holy One to see corruption. Had Jesus's body been in the

  381. grave for longer than three days, He would have started to

  382. see corruption. His body would have started to

  383. decompose. All the things that happened

  384. after death would have easily happened to him.

  385. It didn't. And that was a prophecy that was

  386. fulfilled. Again, His resurrection proved

  387. that He is the Son of God. Let's go over to Romans chapter

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  388. 1. Romans, chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  389. Romans chapter 1 and verse #4 The Bible says and declared to

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  390. be the Son of God with power according to the spirit of

  391. holiness, by the resurrection from the dead, Jesus prophesied

  392. that he would rise again on the third day.

  393. Matthew 16 verse 21 says from that time forth began Jesus to

    Matthew 16:21

  394. show unto his disciples how that he must go into Jerusalem and

  395. suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes

  396. and be killed and be raised again the third day.

  397. If he had not done that, then he would have been proven to be a

  398. false prophet and not the Son of God that he claimed to be.

  399. That's the difference between Jesus and everybody else that's

  400. ever claimed to be something special, claimed to be a

  401. prophet, claimed to be important.

  402. A Jesus is the only one that raised from the dead.

  403. Everybody else, you can go see their grave, you can see their

  404. bones. Jesus is gone.

  405. And that's, that's the amazing thing about the gospel.

  406. So is there evidence then that the gospel is true?

  407. Well, Paul gave 2 great evidences of the truth of the

  408. gospel. And first of all, we have the

  409. Old Testament prophecies that prove that he was, that the

  410. gospel is true. And we've looked at a lot of

  411. verses. So we're not going to do that.

  412. But he died and rose again according to the Scriptures, the

  413. Bible, they, we've already looked at these things, but the

  414. Bible prophecy is a great, great miracle.

  415. We don't even know how what will happen tomorrow yet.

  416. The Bible's prophecies describe events thousands of years in the

  417. future with detailed exactness. And as I mentioned a little bit

  418. ago, every single one of those prophecies about Jesus in the

  419. Old Testament came true in the New Testament.

  420. The second thing is the eyewitness testimonies that

  421. prove that the gospel is true and you should be there.

  422. In First Corinthians chapter 15, we'll read verse #5 and that he

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  423. was seen of Cephas. Then of the 12 after that he was

  424. seen of above 500 brethren at once, of whom the greater part

  425. remain under this present, but some are falling asleep.

  426. In other words, what Paul is saying is, hey, some of these

  427. have died, but there's a huge number of these that are still

  428. alive. Go ask him if they saw Jesus

  429. alive after he rose from the dead, 500 of them saw him at

  430. once. Go ask them.

  431. They're still alive. You can still ask him today

  432. after that verse 7, he was seen of James, then of all the

  433. apostles and last of all, he was seen of me also as of one born

  434. out of due time. Paul said even I saw Jesus after

  435. he raised from the dead. By the way, that was one of the

  436. things that allowed him to be an apostle.

  437. You had to see the risen Christ and, and, and Paul did verse #9

  438. for I am the least of the apostles, that I'm not meant to

  439. be called an apostle because I persecuted the Church of God.

  440. But the Bible is not a blind religious faith.

  441. It's based on many infallible proofs.

  442. And that's what the Bible says in Acts chapter 1 and verse #3

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  443. In fact, if you want to turn over there, it's a great verse.

  444. Acts chapter 1 and verse #3 Jesus the Bible says, to whom

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  445. also he showed himself alive after his passion by many

  446. infallible proofs, being seen of them 40 days, and Speaking of

  447. the things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.

  448. This is not just that, Oh, I saw him at a distance and it sure

  449. looked like it could have been Jesus.

  450. No, Thomas saw him in the upper room, and he put his fingers in

  451. his hands. He put his first in his side,

  452. proving that it was Jesus. Jesus was there with him for 40

  453. days, having conversations, talking with them.

  454. It was not just a spirit, It was not just an apparition.

  455. It was not just somebody who looked like Jesus, it was Jesus

  456. and they knew it. Hebrews Chapter 11 verse one

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  457. tells us that that biblical faith has substance and

  458. evidence. Faith is the substance of things

  459. hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

  460. So the resurrected Christ, as we just read in First Corinthians

  461. 15, was seen by more than 500 people on one occasion.

  462. When Paul wrote this epistle, many of the eyewitnesses were

  463. still alive. He was not writing about things

  464. that had happened long ago and passed down from generation to

  465. generation by word of mouth and dependence on man's valuable

  466. memory. And by the way, I would add to

  467. that, that if what he wrote was false, it would have been easily

  468. disproven. There would have been many, many

  469. people who said, you're making stuff up.

  470. We were there. We never saw him.

  471. We were there. The tomb was still sealed 2

  472. weeks later. You know, it was right outside

  473. the city. It was.

  474. I mean, they would have gone in and out of that gate all the

  475. time as they went in and out of the city.

  476. It's not like it was in some remote corner of the world

  477. somewhere. And this just happened in a in a

  478. vacuum or in a bubble where nobody can see it.

  479. Everybody was there. Everybody saw it.

  480. And when Paul is saying it, Paul is using that to back up his own

  481. evidence. Hey, every 500 people saw it at

  482. one time. And not just that 500 people saw

  483. it, but most of them are still alive.

  484. Go talk to him. Go ask him they saw him.

  485. Even even historical records from men like Josephus, a Jewish

  486. historian, and you can still read Josephus today.

  487. I have I have all of the works of Josephus.

  488. The words are about this big on the page.

  489. It's a thick book with a lot of writing.

  490. And he wrote a lot of stuff about things that the Bible

  491. doesn't even really mention, just historical things that were

  492. happening during that time. But all of the things that

  493. Josephus wrote corroborate the Bible, including everything that

  494. he wrote about Jesus. And he was Jewish.

  495. Don't forget, he was not writing it from a perspective that

  496. really looked on Jesus favorably.

  497. But when you have somebody who is objective and will just write

  498. what he sees, it backs up everything that the Bible says.

  499. So there's not, it's not just that Paul is writing.

  500. It's not just that 500 people saw him.

  501. It's that many other people saw him too.

  502. This resurrection dramatically changed the lives of those who

  503. saw Christ. Let's go over to John, chapter

    John 20 chapter mention

  504. 20. Before he rose, the disciples

  505. were fearful. They were in hiding from the

  506. authorities. What what changed about it?

  507. Well, Jesus was back. And it's not just that they hid

  508. the body. And now they got this, you know,

  509. this strong determination that they're going to go stand up

  510. against the Roman Empire and doesn't matter if you try to

  511. kill us, kill us, we're just going to keep preaching the

  512. gospel. If they knew.

  513. So here's the thing. Many of these, many of the

  514. disciples of Christ and especially the apostles and

  515. those who were alive at that time died horrible martyr

  516. deaths. Every single one of them, with

  517. the exception of John, who was actually exiled on the Isle of

  518. Patmos, died an unnatural death. They were beheaded.

  519. They were they had they were drawn, they had all kinds of

  520. things that were hap that happened to them.

  521. And even Peter, the Bible says, again, this is according to

  522. tradition, the Bible doesn't say this, but Peter was crucified

  523. and he did not deem himself worthy to be crucified in the

  524. same manner that Christ was crucified.

  525. So he asked to be crucified upside down and about.

  526. And history says, not the Bible, history says that Peter was

  527. crucified upside down. You don't go to the cross and

  528. get crucified upside down for something you know to be a lie.

  529. When it finally gets to the point where they're ready to

  530. take your life, you say OK, OK, OK, it's not worth that, right?

  531. What? What motivation did they have to

  532. perpetuate a lie about Jesus? There was 0 motivation for them

  533. to do it. In fact, there would have been a

  534. lot of motivation for them to say the exact opposite of that,

  535. right? And to go along with everything

  536. that the Roman government said and everything else right have

  537. been a whole lot of motivation for them to do that.

  538. And yet every single one of them was willing.

  539. And many of them did give their lives for the cause of Christ

  540. because they believed so strongly, because they were

  541. eyewitnesses of the fact that Jesus had risen from the dead.

  542. But they were, they were fearful, they were in hiding.

  543. Verse #19 Then the same day at evening being the first day of

  544. the week, when the doors were shut, where the disciples were

  545. assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the

  546. midst and said unto them, peace be unto you.

  547. After they saw the risen Christ, they were bold.

  548. They were willing to lay down their lives for the faith.

  549. And not just willing. Many of them did.

  550. Paul did. Paul was beheaded at Rome.

  551. So many of them, so many of them were persecuted.

  552. But the resurrection, in fact, this is this is great.

  553. Let's let's turn over to John Chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  554. You're not too far from there. We talked about this actually

  555. when we went through the book of James a few months ago.

  556. But the resurrection actually even convinced Jesus his own

  557. half brother James. And we say half brother because

  558. Joseph was James his father, but not Jesus his father.

  559. John Chapter 7 and verse #5 the Bible says.

    John 7 chapter mention

  560. For neither did his brethren believe in him.

  561. James did not believe that Jesus Christ was the Messiah until he

  562. rose from the dead. First Corinthians chapter 15.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  563. If you had a bookmark there, you can just flip right back over to

  564. it. The Bible singles out James

  565. verse #7 after that he was seen of James, then of all the

  566. apostles. And the Bible says in the book

  567. of James that he believed on Jesus after he saw him and his

  568. resurrection. His brothers didn't believe him

  569. until he resurrected from the dead.

  570. If that's not a proof, I don't know what is.

  571. The resurrection also convinced Paul converted him from being a

  572. bitter enemy of Christ. From an earthly perspective, and

  573. this is a great point, Paul had nothing to gain by switching his

  574. allegiance from the Jewish leaders of that day.

  575. The the the Sanhedrin and of course the he was a Pharisee of

  576. the Pharisees. He said to become a Christian.

  577. He had every motivation not to do that.

  578. He was he was the big man, right?

  579. He had he had the authority to go and just do anything that he

  580. wanted to do to these Christians.

  581. And yet he saw Jesus Christ alive after his resurrection,

  582. and it changed his life to the point where not only was he

  583. willing to give up all that status, now not only was he

  584. willing to give up all the power that he had, he became the

  585. haunted. The hunter became the haunted to

  586. the point where Paul actually lost his life by having his head

  587. taken off of his shoulders. So back in First Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  588. chapter 15, verse #2 says this. Actually, let's just go to verse

  589. one for context. Moreover, brethren, I declare

  590. unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also

  591. you have received, and wherein ye stand, but by which also you

  592. are saved, if you keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless

  593. ye have believed in vain. So what then does it mean to

  594. believe in vain? Paul probably means that there

  595. are ways to believe that don't result in salvation.

  596. And so here's a couple things that we'll talk about as we

  597. close out this section tonight. Number 11 can believe in vain by

  598. believing the wrong things. Let's turn over to John chapter

    John 20 chapter mention

  599. 20. Sorry, John chapter 2 for a

    John 2 chapter mention

  600. little bit of a little bit of context here to see what what

  601. he's talking about when he says that you can believe in vain by

  602. believing the wrong things. Verse #23.

  603. Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, in the feast day,

  604. many believed in His name when they saw the miracles which he

  605. did. But Jesus did not commit Himself

  606. unto them, because He knew all men, and needed not that any

  607. should testify of man, for He knew what was in man.

  608. These Jews believed on Jesus as a as a worldly provider, as

  609. somebody who would feed and protect them, instead of

  610. believing on Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

  611. And there's a big difference, right?

  612. There's a lot of people who believe, right, who have faith,

  613. and this is what he says. Likewise, many today believe on

  614. Jesus in wrong ways. They come to Jesus, they pray to

  615. him so that it'll help them with their problems or build up their

  616. self esteem or make them wealthy or heal them or some other

  617. thing, rather than humbling themselves as sinners and

  618. trusting him solely as their savior.

  619. So there's a lot of people who will believe in God, right?

  620. I believe God. I'm a Christian, they, they

  621. associate themselves with Christianity because they

  622. believe God or, or many times they'll make a deal with God.

  623. If you Get Me Out of this situation, then I will do this

  624. for you, right? Many, many, many people have

  625. made that that decision in their life.

  626. I'm drowning. If you, if you save my life,

  627. I'll give my life to you. And so God saves them and they

  628. give their life to God. That's their salvation

  629. experience. They believe on Jesus.

  630. Well, they're believing in the wrong things, right?

  631. It's not believing on Jesus Christ for salvation.

  632. It's believing on him as a protector.

  633. It's believing on him as, as a provider.

  634. It's believing on him as, as all kinds of other things, but not

  635. as a savior. And we, we need a provider.

  636. We need a protector. If without God's protection,

  637. without God's provision, without God's everything, we have

  638. nothing. But what we need more than

  639. anything else is not food, It's not protection.

  640. What we need more than anything else is somebody to save us from

  641. our sins. And when you start getting

  642. specific and start talking about Jesus as the savior from your

  643. sins, all the sudden people don't want to talk about that

  644. anymore. They'll believe in Jesus, right?

  645. Jesus loves you. Jesus is my copilot.

  646. You know, all the bumper stickers and everything else.

  647. But then when it comes to Jesus being the savior from your sin,

  648. that's not the Jesus that I want to believe in, right?

  649. And, and, and having faith or talking about your faith, but

  650. you can still have faith in the wrong thing, right?

  651. You can say that you have faith in that chair that it's going to

  652. hold you up. And you can even go over there

  653. and sit down in that chair. But I'm not talking about that

  654. chair. I'm talking about this one,

  655. right? And, and honestly that I mean,

  656. you, you have that with a lot of different religions in the

  657. world, right? This is what the Catholic Church

  658. says you have to do, believe in Jesus and do all the sacraments

  659. and be a good person and make sure you go to the priest and

  660. have your sins forgiven and make sure that before you die you get

  661. your last rites and all of those things, and then you have a

  662. possibility of going into heaven.

  663. OK, well, I believe that. I believe it's going to hold me

  664. up and you sit in it, but you're sitting in the wrong chair.

  665. This is the one that's actually going to take you to heaven

  666. because this is what the Bible says about how to get there.

  667. So you're believing in Jesus for all of these things that you can

  668. get out of him or all of these things that he can do for you

  669. when what you need is a savior from your sins.

  670. That's the Jesus that we need to believe in.

  671. And there's a lot of Jesuses in the world today that people are

  672. believing in and believing on, but it's the wrong Jesus.

  673. And you know, the Mormons are, are a great example of that,

  674. right? It's a false gospel.

  675. It's a false Jesus. You know, you, you go into

  676. Mormonism and start reading through their religious

  677. documents, their, their Pearl of great price, their Bible.

  678. And what you find out is that, you know, Jesus and Satan were

  679. brothers and, you know, they had a conflict in heaven and Satan

  680. chose the wrong side and Jesus got the upper seat.

  681. And you know, he's going to be a God someday with his own worlds.

  682. And so can all of us. We can be God someday with our

  683. own worlds, and we're the brothers of Jesus and all of

  684. these other things. It's not the same Jesus that the

  685. Bible is telling us about. It's Jesus.

  686. And so when you talk to a Mormon, he's going to tell you

  687. that he believes in Jesus. And, and many of them have the

  688. greatest intentions and they think they're talking about the

  689. same Jesus. But if they would actually read

  690. their own Bible, they would find out that we're not talking about

  691. the same Jesus at all. So you can believe on Jesus, but

  692. you're believing on the wrong one.

  693. And you're believing in the wrong things to take you to

  694. heaven, right. You can't get to heaven in the

  695. Mormon church unless you have a temple recommend.

  696. How do you get a temple recommend?

  697. Well, you have to be in good standing with the Mormon church

  698. and you can go and you can get baptized for the dead people who

  699. have been dead for 100 years. You can go in there and if you

  700. have a list to prove that you know who this person is and

  701. they're in your family and everything else, you can go get

  702. baptized for them so that in the afterlife, they might hopefully

  703. have a chance of getting to heaven at some point, right?

  704. And and people will go in and get baptized in the Mormon

  705. church in the temple 15 times for 15 different people who

  706. didn't believe in the Mormon Jesus and who didn't believe in

  707. the Mormon doctrine and died in their sin.

  708. And now you can get baptized for them so they can have a chance

  709. of getting out of hell and getting into heaven in the

  710. afterlife. That's not in the Bible.

  711. It's a different Jesus, right? So believe in him all you want,

  712. but you're believing in the wrong things.

  713. Your faith is misplaced, right? You can believe all you want to,

  714. but if it's in the wrong thing, it doesn't do any good for you.

  715. What does the Bible say Not what did some man make up not what

  716. did not? What does this church say you

  717. have to do not what does this man say you have to do?

  718. What does the Bible say? And if it doesn't say it in the

  719. Bible, then we should not be following it.

  720. So that's what happens. You can believe in vain by

  721. believing the wrong things. Now you can be sincere and be

  722. sincerely wrong, right? I mean, you think, OK, let's,

  723. let's just take the stock market for example, right?

  724. This stock is good is the next big thing.

  725. I'm putting all my money into it.

  726. That's how much I believe in this stock, right?

  727. And you put all your money into it and it tanks.

  728. You believed it sincerely and you proved it because you put

  729. all of your money into that, into that stock.

  730. But just because you believed it doesn't make it true, right?

  731. Just because you thought that that was going to happen and you

  732. put all your faith in that stock, it's still tanked, right?

  733. And the same thing is true. There's a lot of people out

  734. there in religions in the world today who are very sincere and

  735. who are trying to do everything they can to follow what that

  736. religion says they have to do. There are very sincere Catholics

  737. out there in the world today who are very religious people and

  738. who won't miss a single Mass and who won't miss a single prayer

  739. of the rosary at night, and who won't miss a single opportunity

  740. to confess their sins and do everything right because they're

  741. very, very, very sincere. They're going to find out when

  742. they get to heaven and stand before God that that wasn't

  743. God's way. That was some man's way.

  744. Something that man made-up, they're going to find out when

  745. they get there that even though they were very sincere, they

  746. were sincerely wrong and their faith was misplaced because it

  747. wasn't in the Jesus that the Bible tells us about.

  748. So how do you believe in vain? You can believe the wrong things

  749. #2 you can believe in vain by believing without repentance.

  750. And we see that. In fact, let's just go to Luke

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  751. chapter 13, Luke chapter 13, and verse #3 verse 2.

    Luke 13 chapter mention

  752. Jesus answering, said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galileans

  753. were sinners above all the Galileans, because they suffered

  754. such things? I tell you, nay, no, because,

  755. but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

  756. Let's go over to Acts chapter 17.

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  757. And again we don't. I'm not trying to hammer a point

  758. that we've already talked about because these are all the same

  759. verses that we talked about when we went to when we went through

  760. repentance. But Acts chapter 17 and verse

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  761. #30 is one that we haven't looked at.

  762. And the times of this ignorance God winked at.

  763. In other words, God overlooked it, but now commandeth all men

  764. everywhere to repent. And this was this was Paul

  765. standing there and preaching to the Athenians, to those in

  766. Athens, Greece, on Mars Hill. And they were very sincere.

  767. They had they had monuments to all these gods.

  768. In fact, that just in case they missed one, they had a monument

  769. to the unknown God. And Paul said, who is that

  770. unknown God? He preached to them Jesus.

  771. And he said, listen, it's understandable because you don't

  772. know the truth. But now that you know the truth,

  773. God commands you to repent. The times of this ignorance you

  774. didn't know. God winked that, but now

  775. commandeth all men everywhere to repent, because he hath

  776. appointed a day in the which he will judge the world in

  777. righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained, whereof he

  778. hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him

  779. from the dead. And then they had a choice.

  780. Are they going to accept it? Were they going to reject it?

  781. Well. And when they heard of the

  782. resurrection of the dead, some mocked and others said, we will

  783. hear thee again of this matter. Paul departed from among them.

  784. They had a choice after that. But very, very clearly, Paul

  785. said you need to repent. Belief without repentance is not

  786. salvation. Repentance means to surrender to

  787. God. Many want to believe in Jesus

  788. without surrendering their lives to Him, but it's impossible to

  789. be saved without repentance. By the way, let's turn over to

  790. James Shepherd too. I think this is one of the one

  791. of the clearest examples that we have that it's not just belief.

  792. I think this is a great argument for those, and there's a lot of

  793. them out there nowadays that are saying that that repentance is

  794. just a change from unbelief to belief.

  795. That's not repentance. Repentance is surrendering to

  796. God. Repentance is recognizing that I

  797. am a Sinner and without Christ I am going to spend an eternity in

  798. hell. James chapter 2 and verse #19

    James 2 chapter mention

  799. Thou believethest that there is one God.

  800. Thou doest well. The devils also believe and

  801. tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man,

  802. that faith without works is dead?

  803. The devils know that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

  804. The devils know all of these things, and not just that they

  805. know it, they believe it. I believe he said there's one

  806. God, thou do as well. The devils also believe and they

  807. tremble. They know that He exists, but

  808. they don't submit to Him. And many sinners are doing the

  809. exact same thing. They they acknowledge the

  810. existence of Jesus Christ. They acknowledge his death, his

  811. burial, his resurrection. They acknowledge those things,

  812. but they don't acknowledge him as the Savior from their sin.

  813. That's that's a lot of these people who are going and getting

  814. baptized as their salvation experience.

  815. I went to church today for the first time in 10 years and I got

  816. baptized. You're recognizing Jesus as

  817. somebody who died, buried, and was resurrected, but you are not

  818. making Jesus Christ the Lord. You're not surrendering to Him

  819. if there's no repentance. And how The third way that you

  820. can believe in vain is by believing a false gospel or a

  821. false Christ. Second Corinthians.

  822. Let's turn over this one as the last one.

  823. Second Corinthians Chapter 11, 2nd Corinthians Chapter 11 and

    2 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  824. verse #3 and four. And I kind of hit on this

  825. already, but I would have you know that the head of every man

  826. is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man, and the head

  827. of the Christ is God. Every man praying or prophesying

  828. had having his I'm sorry, that was like does not make sense.

  829. Second Corinthians does not make sense with what I what we needed

  830. to what we're talking about here.

  831. Second Corinthians Chapter 11 verse 3 and 4.

    2 Corinthians 11:3

  832. But I fear lest by any means as the serpent beguiled Eve through

  833. his subtlety, so your mind should be corrupted from the

  834. simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preaches

  835. to another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if you receive

  836. another spirit which you have not received, or another gospel

  837. which you have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

  838. For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chief of his

  839. apostles. And he continues on there.

  840. But basically what he's saying is, don't accept anybody.

  841. And he says, if I or an Angel from heaven come preach in

  842. another gospel, reject it, right.

  843. If that's not, I mean, if that is not the majority of religion

  844. in the world today. In fact, Mormonism very clearly

  845. says this is another testament, it's another gospel.

  846. I mean, if you don't need, if you need a stronger warning than

  847. that against those that are coming and preaching another

  848. gospel, I don't know how you can get any clearer than this.

  849. I don't know what other rejection of Mormonism you need

  850. other than something that says this.

  851. If somebody comes preaching another gospel, don't, don't

  852. accept it. It's not the truth.

  853. And they say, oh, we got another gospel.

  854. And everybody says, oh, another gospel, let's take that.

  855. All right, why would you do that?

  856. The Bible very clearly says don't, right?

  857. And they're coming and they're preaching another Jesus.

  858. And that's how that's how you know that there is another

  859. Jesus, right? Because the Bible says it.

  860. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus whom we have not

  861. preached, that means there are other Jesuses out there that are

  862. being preached. If it's not the Jesus of the

  863. Bible, then we need to reject it.

  864. Many believe in a different gospel or a different Jesus than

  865. that which is revealed in Scripture.

  866. For example, they believe in a gospel of faith plus works or

  867. Jesus plus sacraments or Jesus that is not almighty God in the

  868. flesh. And there's, there's a million

  869. other things that people believe that's not in the Bible.

  870. And that's why I say you want to know the truth.

  871. Is it in the Bible? If it's in the Bible, it's the

  872. truth. If it's not in the Bible, it's

  873. not the truth. I don't care who you are.

  874. I don't care who you claim to be.

  875. I don't care who you claim to talk to.

  876. If it's not in the Bible, we have everything we need from

  877. God's Word. There are no new revelations

  878. today. Everything we need we've been

  879. given already. And he said the things that you

  880. find in this book, you better not add to it.

  881. Better not take away from it, or you going to face the wrath of

  882. God. I think I'll just stick with

  883. what's here. We don't need anything else.

  884. So the gospel important, obviously it's the foundational

  885. element, repentance, faith, the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  886. Without that, everything else, everything else is just building

  887. on a foundation of sand and you can know all of it's going to

  888. come crumbling down. You could be the best builder

  889. there is. You can build a beautiful,

  890. beautiful house. If it's built on sand, it's

  891. going to collapse, right? And that's what we, that's what

  892. most people are doing. They're building on sand because

  893. they've never come to Christ in repentance and faith.

  894. They've never made Jesus Christ the Savior that they need

  895. because of their sin. And they put the sanctification

  896. in front of the justification. And you do all of these things

  897. that Christians do, but all of these things that Christians do

  898. are built on sand because this is the foundation, repentance,

  899. faith, the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  900. That's the foundation and without that you can build, you

  901. can put all these things together, but it's going to come

  902. crashing down and it's going to be hollow.

  903. It's going to be empty because it's not built on the foundation

  904. of Jesus Christ. So we're going to continue,

  905. we're going to continue talking about some more of these things

  906. and, and, and really some of these, even the next one,

  907. evidence of salvation, baptism after that, a lot of different

  908. things, eternal security. Those are all things that come

  909. after salvation, but until you until you know Christ as your

  910. Savior, until you have that foundation, then it doesn't

  911. matter what you build on top of it.

  912. You need that foundation first, then you can build and then it

  913. will be strong and then it's going to last.

  914. All right, we'll do some questions from that next week.

  915. And I know there's a lot of them, a lot of verses in there

  916. as well, but a good study. Let's pray.

  917. Father, again, we thank you so much for your goodness to us.

  918. Thank you for the opportunity that we have to study through

  919. these things. I pray that it's a help to us.

  920. God, may you make us strong in understanding these things.

  921. May you make us strong and being able to explain this to somebody

  922. else from God's word. And God, if it's in the Bible,

  923. may you help us to be strong on it.

  924. If it's not in the Bible, may you help us to reject it.

  925. We thank you again for all you do for us in Jesus name, Amen.
