  1. We're in 2 Samuel chapter 7 today.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  2. Well, as you're turning to 2 Samuel 7,

  3. I'll explain what series we are in right now.

  4. So, we finish going through the gospel according to John.

  5. We begin a shorter series on covenant theology,

  6. seeing the divine covenants,

  7. when God has sworn and made a vow to humans.

  8. We saw the covenant God made with Adam,

  9. the covenant God made through Noah with all of creation.

  10. We saw the covenant the Lord made with Abraham, with Moses.

  11. There are two more covenants left.

  12. Then we paused after Moses, and we had eight weeks in the Psalms.

  13. So, we finished with Psalm 16 last week.

  14. We're picking up on covenant theology.

  15. The last two covenants, do you know what they are?

  16. The covenant God made with David,

  17. and then finally, the new covenant in Jesus Christ.

  18. We spent two weeks on each covenant.

  19. So, this is the Davidic covenant part one.

  20. Next week, open air.

  21. The Davidic covenant part two.

  22. Pray for me.

  23. And then, we'll be the new covenant.

  24. The covenant the Lord made through Jesus Christ for two weeks.

  25. After that, we'll begin in the book of the Bible,

  26. and I'll share more about that with you later.

  27. For a bit of review to set up the context here of today's sermon text,

  28. the Abrahamic covenant promised a realm and a people for God's kingdom.

  29. The Mosaic covenant provided God's law for that kingdom.

  30. Now, in the Davidic covenant, God is promising a human king over his kingdom.

  31. God establishes purpose over all of creation by giving to the first federal head, Adam,

  32. dominion over all that God had made.

  33. And now, it's going to reach a new stage of progressive history leading up to that final fulfillment

  34. of God's original promise.

  35. Who will be the next federal head, the new Adam?

  36. Paul calls him the second Adam, the new creation, the firstborn.

  37. And that will be our Lord Jesus Christ.

  38. But the promise to David that you'll see today sets that stage.

  39. It tees it up.

  40. And that's what the Messianic promises are fulfilled,

  41. fulfilling this that we'll read today.

  42. All right.

  43. Well, as we read God's word,

  44. I do so believing this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  45. It's God's very own word for you, his people.

  46. So after I'm done reading, I'll say this is the word of God.

  47. If you receive it that way, you can say thanks be to God.

  48. 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  49. I'm going to read verses 8 through 16.

  50. Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David.

  51. This is the Lord instructing the prophet Nathan.

  52. Thus says the Lord of hosts,

  53. I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep to be ruler over my people, over Israel.

  54. And I have been with you wherever you have gone,

  55. and have cut off all your enemies from before you,

  56. and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on earth.

  57. Moreover, I will appoint a place for my people Israel,

  58. and I will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own,

  59. and move no more, nor shall their sons of wickedness oppress them any more,

  60. as previously, since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel,

  61. and have caused you to rest from all your enemies.

  62. Also the Lord tells you that he will make you a house.

  63. When your days are fulfilled, and you rest with your fathers,

  64. I will set up your seed after you,

  65. who will come from your body,

  66. and I will establish his kingdom.

  67. He shall build a house for my name,

  68. and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

  69. Verse 14.

  70. I will be his father, and he shall be my son.

  71. If he commits iniquity,

  72. I will chasten him with the rod of men,

  73. and with the blows of the sons of men.

  74. But my mercy shall not depart from him,

  75. as I took it from Saul,

  76. whom I removed from before you.

  77. And your house and your kingdom

  78. shall be established forever before you.

  79. Your throne shall be established forever.

  80. This is the word of the Lord.

  81. Thanks be to God.

  82. You may be seated.

  83. Let's pray.

  84. O Lord Jesus,

  85. in your glorified body,

  86. you walked with your disciples.

  87. You walked on the road to Emmaus.

  88. And you opened up all of the scriptures,

  89. and you showed how they all point to you.

  90. And the power of the word of God,

  91. through the living Jesus Christ,

  92. was ministered to those disciples in their heart.

  93. They thought back on what that felt like.

  94. They said,

  95. Oh, did our hearts not burn within us?

  96. And we pray, Lord,

  97. that you, Jesus Christ,

  98. the living word of God,

  99. that you will preach to your people.

  100. We pray that your Holy Spirit

  101. will apply your truth to our hearts.

  102. I pray that you'll guard my lips.

  103. I pray that you'll guard the ears of your people.

  104. Anything that comes out of my mouth

  105. that's not pleasing to you, Lord,

  106. may it just fall to the ground

  107. and blow away like the dust.

  108. But Lord,

  109. any truth of how your word points to Jesus Christ,

  110. how all of God's promises find your yes

  111. and their amen in Jesus,

  112. we pray that you'll make that to burn

  113. in the hearts of your people.

  114. By the power of your Holy Spirit,

  115. we ask for your glory.

  116. Amen.

  117. Quote,

  118. The king must die

  119. that the nation may live.

  120. Those were the words of Maximilien Robespierre.

  121. He was one of the radical revolutionaries

  122. in the French Revolution.

  123. The king must die

  124. that the nation may live.

  125. The message of the French Revolution

  126. was liberty for the oppressed.

  127. And in his mind,

  128. if there's no king,

  129. then we can have liberty.

  130. Because liberty equates to having no rules,

  131. no law.

  132. And that's the way the world thinks.

  133. No rules equals happiness.

  134. Well, if you look at what happened in the French Revolution,

  135. is Robespierre was the ringleader for the reign of terror.

  136. If you thought it was bad,

  137. under the corrupt monarchy,

  138. it got much worse during the reign of terror.

  139. An entire class of people

  140. were lined up

  141. and took their turn

  142. at the guillotine.

  143. No king,

  144. no rules

  145. does not lead to happiness.

  146. It leads to chaos.

  147. It leads to a philosophy of might

  148. makes right,

  149. which leads to abuse

  150. and violence.

  151. In today's sermon text,

  152. we heard a reference

  153. to the time of the judges

  154. before Saul and David

  155. became the first kings over Israel.

  156. In the book of Judges,

  157. it ends with this assessment of the nation.

  158. Judges 21-25.

  159. Everyone did what was right

  160. in his own eyes.

  161. Why?

  162. Because there was no king in the land.

  163. So, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  164. my message to you today

  165. as we look at the promises

  166. God made to David.

  167. It's that you need a king.

  168. You and I need a king.

  169. My first point is

  170. that God promised

  171. a glorious kingdom

  172. belonging to a great king.

  173. I want to walk through

  174. pretty much this entire sermon text

  175. and simply point that out.

  176. God promised a glorious kingdom

  177. to a great king.

  178. I have six observations here.

  179. Number one,

  180. God displays his glory

  181. by promising gracious blessings

  182. to a nobody.

  183. Look at verse 8.

  184. God takes a nobody like David

  185. and he gives him

  186. these glorious promises of grace.

  187. Look how God reminds David

  188. of where he came from

  189. in verse 8.

  190. Now therefore,

  191. thus shall you say

  192. to my servant David,

  193. thus says the Lord of hosts,

  194. I took you from the sheepfold,

  195. from following the sheep,

  196. to be the ruler

  197. of my people Israel.

  198. David,

  199. I will get all the glory

  200. in what I do through you.

  201. David,

  202. I will give you a great name,

  203. but you need to remember

  204. and never forget,

  205. you were following stinky sheep around

  206. in the grass.

  207. If you get a great name

  208. by being over my people,

  209. it's so that I will get the glory.

  210. Don't touch my glory,

  211. says God to David.

  212. But God promises

  213. he will make a great name

  214. of this man.

  215. In chapter 9 we read,

  216. I have been with you

  217. wherever you have gone

  218. and cut off all of your enemies

  219. from before you

  220. and have made you

  221. a great name,

  222. like the name of the great men

  223. who are on earth.

  224. David experienced just that.

  225. As David fought against

  226. the Philistines early on

  227. and against all the other nations,

  228. on every side,

  229. the Lord gave him victory.

  230. And David was the first one

  231. to admit,

  232. we see this pattern

  233. in all the Psalms,

  234. every time God gives victory,

  235. it's because God

  236. was at his right hand.

  237. It was the presence of God

  238. with David

  239. and with the army.

  240. This name of greatness

  241. that the nations would fear

  242. came because God

  243. was the one doing it.

  244. We see that David

  245. was a man of war

  246. in the stories

  247. that were told

  248. in 1 and 2 Samuel.

  249. He was often in exile.

  250. He had to be chased out

  251. of the land

  252. and live as a sojourner

  253. in foreign lands.

  254. But God promised

  255. to give him

  256. and the entire nation

  257. rest in the land.

  258. Look at verse 10.

  259. I will appoint a place

  260. for my people Israel

  261. and I will plant them

  262. and they may dwell

  263. in a place of their own

  264. and move no more.

  265. Nor shall the sons

  266. of wickedness oppress you.

  267. You will have rest

  268. from all your enemies.

  269. What God promises

  270. is what we all long for.

  271. I think I've shared

  272. with everyone here,

  273. I grew up in Brazil

  274. and the Brazilians

  275. look at me

  276. and think you're not Brazilian

  277. and now in the USA,

  278. no one knows.

  279. I really am Brazilian.

  280. That's what I feel.

  281. I am Brazilian.

  282. And so,

  283. if we belong to Christ

  284. and he is your king,

  285. you belong to the kingdom of God.

  286. That's your identity.

  287. That's where you're at home

  288. is in the kingdom of God

  289. wherever you are.

  290. And it's right and good

  291. and it's preparing your soul

  292. for eternity with him

  293. to feel always

  294. a little bit homesick.

  295. Amen?

  296. Amen?

  297. Now it's not trying to escape

  298. what he's called us to.

  299. He's planted us here

  300. and he will bring

  301. a new heavens

  302. and a new earth

  303. and in Christ reigning over us

  304. we get to be part of that.

  305. But this promise

  306. that you will have a place.

  307. You will be able

  308. to dwell in peace.

  309. That's what some of you

  310. need to hear today.

  311. And find that place

  312. in the kingdom

  313. of Jesus Christ.

  314. You won't find it

  315. anywhere else.

  316. You can ask the testimony

  317. of other brothers and sisters

  318. who've tried,

  319. peeked in those doors.

  320. it will not satisfy.

  321. You're at home

  322. in Christ's kingdom alone.

  323. Well next is that

  324. the line of the king

  325. over God's chosen people

  326. will be appointed

  327. by God himself.

  328. See, God let the nation

  329. have Saul to show them

  330. you wanted a king

  331. like all the other nations

  332. who's tall and handsome?

  333. You can have that.

  334. And then the Lord

  335. cut off Saul.

  336. And he cut off

  337. all of the line of Saul

  338. to make it very clear

  339. that God will be the one

  340. who will appoint a man

  341. an actual king

  342. over his people.

  343. And God promised David

  344. a house.

  345. The best understanding

  346. in the original language

  347. for the word house

  348. is a dynasty

  349. or a line.

  350. Look at verse 11.

  351. The Lord will make you

  352. a house.

  353. Verse 12.

  354. He will set up

  355. your seed after you.

  356. So a house is a line

  357. of kings,

  358. a dynasty.

  359. We read God's word

  360. as true and inerrant

  361. and clear.

  362. This is an actual

  363. genealogical line

  364. from the king David

  365. in Israelite history

  366. to a man.

  367. God will do this.

  368. We'll see,

  369. David wanted to build

  370. a place

  371. for God to meet

  372. with his people.

  373. But God promised

  374. that David wouldn't

  375. be the one

  376. that would get

  377. to do that.

  378. There would be

  379. a temple.

  380. There would be

  381. a dwelling place,

  382. a place where

  383. the holy God

  384. would meet

  385. with sinners

  386. and forgive them

  387. and dwell with them

  388. by grace.

  389. But it wouldn't be

  390. something David

  391. would build.

  392. It would be

  393. the seed of David,

  394. the offspring of David

  395. that would have

  396. to build this.

  397. Verse 13.

  398. He is the one

  399. who shall build

  400. a house for my name,

  401. says God.

  402. Well, David failed

  403. to discipline

  404. his own sons.

  405. Much of the turmoil

  406. we were reading about

  407. in the Psalms,

  408. it comes from problems

  409. that arose from

  410. within the house,

  411. within this house

  412. of David.

  413. He did not discipline

  414. his sons.

  415. He failed.

  416. But God promised

  417. in verse 14,

  418. I will be his father

  419. and he shall be my son.

  420. And if he,

  421. the dynastic king

  422. in the line of David,

  423. commits iniquity,

  424. sins against me,

  425. God,

  426. trespasses my law,

  427. I will chasten him.

  428. I will discipline him

  429. like a loving father does.

  430. But God promised

  431. his steadfast love

  432. would never be taken away.

  433. Look at verse 15.

  434. I took my mercy

  435. away from Saul

  436. and I removed Saul

  437. from before you.

  438. But God promises

  439. to your seed,

  440. I will never remove

  441. my steadfast love.

  442. Verse 15.

  443. My mercy

  444. shall not depart

  445. from him.

  446. from David's

  447. promised offspring.

  448. What a glorious promise

  449. the Lord gives

  450. to his people.

  451. There will be

  452. a kingdom.

  453. This kingdom

  454. will be ruled

  455. by a great king

  456. with a great name.

  457. And if you can be

  458. in this kingdom,

  459. it will be glorious.

  460. God will dwell with you.

  461. God will rule over you

  462. through a man

  463. that will come

  464. from this line

  465. of David.

  466. Well,

  467. God's word

  468. is for his people

  469. in every generation.

  470. And his Holy Spirit

  471. helps us

  472. to see what God

  473. was doing all along.

  474. But we don't want

  475. to flatten out

  476. all of God's revelation.

  477. We want to try

  478. to do our best

  479. to understand

  480. how is this word true

  481. through every step

  482. of redemptive history.

  483. So,

  484. how did God

  485. keep his promises

  486. to national Israel

  487. proving

  488. that he is true

  489. to his word?

  490. Let's not skip this step.

  491. How did God

  492. keep his promises

  493. to national Israel

  494. proving

  495. that he is true

  496. to his word?

  497. Would you turn forward

  498. in your Bible

  499. a bit

  500. to 1 Kings

    1 Kings 8:20

  501. chapter 8

  502. verse 20?

  503. 1 Kings

    1 Kings 8:20

  504. chapter 8

  505. verse 20.

  506. How did the Lord

  507. keep his promises?

  508. And how does the Bible

  509. interpret God's own

  510. fulfillment

  511. of what he promised?

  512. 1 Kings

    1 Kings 8:20

  513. chapter 8

  514. verse 20.

  515. The son of David,

  516. this promised seed

  517. who would be carrying

  518. on this dynasty

  519. over Israel

  520. was Solomon.

  521. And the Lord

  522. allowed Solomon

  523. to build a temple

  524. and to dedicate

  525. this temple.

  526. And Solomon

  527. prays.

  528. 1 Kings

  529. 8

  530. 20

  531. says

  532. in the words

  533. of Solomon

  534. and so

  535. the Lord

  536. has fulfilled

  537. his word

  538. which he spoke.

  539. I have filled

  540. the position

  541. of my father

  542. David

  543. and sit

  544. on the throne

  545. of Israel.

  546. As the Lord

  547. promised,

  548. I have built

  549. a temple

  550. for the name

  551. of the Lord

  552. God

  553. of Israel.

  554. Look at

  555. verse 24.

  556. He directs

  557. this testimony

  558. to the Lord,

  559. to God.

  560. Verse 24.

  561. You have kept

  562. what you promised

  563. your servant

  564. David,

  565. my father.

  566. You have both

  567. spoken

  568. with your mouth

  569. and fulfilled

  570. it with

  571. your hand.

  572. Praise God

  573. he keeps

  574. his word.

  575. God acts

  576. and ordains

  577. history in such

  578. a way that we

  579. can look back

  580. and see how

  581. God has orchestrated

  582. every event

  583. of redemptive

  584. history for

  585. his people

  586. in every generation.

  587. The greatness

  588. of Solomon's name,

  589. it was something

  590. that was known

  591. worldwide.

  592. There was a queen

  593. from a region

  594. called Sheba.

  595. We read of this

  596. in 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 9:1–8

  597. chapter 9

  598. verses 1 through 8.

  599. And even the queen

  600. of Sheba heard

  601. of the fame

  602. of Solomon

  603. and she said

  604. when she visited

  605. him,

  606. it was a true

  607. report which I heard

  608. in my own land

  609. about your words

  610. and your wisdom.

  611. However,

  612. I did not believe

  613. their words

  614. until I came

  615. and saw

  616. with my own eyes

  617. you exceed

  618. the fame

  619. of which I heard.

  620. Happy are those

  621. who stand

  622. continually before you

  623. and hear your wisdom.

  624. Listen to what

  625. the queen of Sheba

  626. says to Solomon.

  627. Blessed be the

  628. Lord your God

  629. who delights

  630. in you,

  631. setting you

  632. on his throne

  633. to be king

  634. of the Lord

  635. Most High.

  636. What a testimony

  637. of God giving

  638. his promise

  639. the great name

  640. to Solomon

  641. the seed of David

  642. and fulfilling

  643. his word

  644. that he would

  645. sit on the throne

  646. he would build

  647. the temple

  648. and God's glory

  649. filled the temple.

  650. God filled Solomon

  651. with wisdom

  652. so that those

  653. who were in his court

  654. received his counsel

  655. and Israel enjoyed

  656. peace under Solomon.

  657. The Lord is true

  658. to his word.

  659. But we have a problem

  660. when it comes

  661. to national Israel

  662. and the problem

  663. is man.

  664. When blessing

  665. depends on man's

  666. obedience

  667. we suffer.

  668. When blessing

  669. depends on man's

  670. obedience

  671. we are under

  672. a covenant of works.

  673. It's a principle

  674. of works

  675. because if man

  676. disobeys

  677. we bring on curses.

  678. Only perfect obedience

  679. can bring on blessing.

  680. Do you remember

  681. that principle

  682. way back in the

  683. Garden of Eden

  684. as goes the king

  685. so goes the kingdom.

  686. We don't get to

  687. make the rules

  688. God set it up

  689. this way

  690. Adam will be the one

  691. who is to guard

  692. and to keep

  693. and to minister

  694. before God

  695. in the Garden of Eden

  696. and the Lord

  697. set up this principle

  698. of imputed sin

  699. that with Adam's sin

  700. as the federal head

  701. all of mankind

  702. is now fallen

  703. short of the glory

  704. of God

  705. our wills are bound

  706. to be sinful

  707. we're bent in that direction

  708. all that we do

  709. will be tainted

  710. and polluted

  711. by sin

  712. that came from Adam

  713. then in our own pride

  714. our own self-righteousness

  715. our own works

  716. our own willful sin

  717. that just piles on

  718. the sin of a people

  719. and so this same principle

  720. now for national Israel

  721. all it takes

  722. is one of the kings

  723. of this line of David

  724. sinning

  725. rebelling against God

  726. turning to idolatry

  727. this principle of works

  728. will affect

  729. the entire kingdom

  730. as goes the king

  731. so goes the kingdom

  732. we read in the law of God

  733. that the Davidic king

  734. he was to

  735. to memorize it

  736. to write it

  737. make a copy

  738. that the scribes

  739. would inspect

  740. the king was to

  741. reflect

  742. the righteous rule

  743. over the nation

  744. of God himself

  745. well what

  746. what king

  747. under the curse of Adam

  748. can rule a nation

  749. without falling short

  750. of the glory of God

  751. the Davidic king

  752. was to

  753. lead Israel

  754. in the faithful

  755. observance of

  756. all of God's law

  757. that he gave

  758. through Moses

  759. we didn't even

  760. have to go

  761. one generation

  762. past Solomon

  763. to see the fall

  764. to see how man

  765. once again

  766. violates the law

  767. of God

  768. Solomon

  769. was the one

  770. who began

  771. forsaking God

  772. and turning instead

  773. to the idols

  774. that all of his

  775. different marriages

  776. brought into the nation

  777. in 1st Kings 11

  778. verse 2

  779. we read

  780. that you shall not

  781. intermarry with them

  782. nor they with you

  783. for surely

  784. they will turn away

  785. your hearts

  786. after their gods

  787. but Solomon

  788. clung to these

  789. in love

  790. as goes the king

  791. so goes

  792. the kingdom

  793. that temple

  794. that Solomon built

  795. which was filled

  796. with the glory

  797. of God

  798. King Nebuchadnezzar

  799. came and destroyed

  800. and carried the people

  801. away into exile

  802. and so now we have

  803. the throne

  804. of David

  805. sitting empty

  806. no land

  807. no freedom

  808. no law

  809. no peace

  810. and a bad name

  811. how will God

  812. be faithful

  813. to his promises

  814. because when it

  815. depends on man

  816. everyone

  817. gets misery

  818. do you see

  819. how even the story

  820. of God's promise

  821. to David

  822. and the fall

  823. of the nation

  824. to idolatry

  825. even that

  826. it proves to us

  827. that man

  828. has no hope

  829. of blessing

  830. unless God

  831. himself

  832. becomes our king

  833. no man

  834. on earth

  835. can have a hope

  836. of receiving

  837. God's blessing

  838. by being good

  839. enough

  840. and that's why

  841. God himself

  842. had to become

  843. the king

  844. from the line

  845. of David

  846. to fulfill

  847. all of these

  848. promises

  849. if you're back

  850. in our sermon

  851. text

  852. you can turn

  853. there

  854. 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  855. chapter 7

  856. 2 Samuel 7

  857. there's one more

  858. verse

  859. that we haven't

  860. read yet

  861. in our exposition

  862. and that's

  863. verse 16

  864. 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 7:16

  865. chapter 7

  866. verse 16

  867. as you heard

  868. this the first

  869. time

  870. some of you

  871. might have

  872. thought

  873. that sounds

  874. more glorious

  875. than what

  876. Solomon

  877. or any other

  878. man

  879. could achieve

  880. how will God

  881. be true to his

  882. word

  883. in verse 16

  884. God promised

  885. your house

  886. your kingdom

  887. your throne

  888. shall be

  889. established

  890. forever

  891. before you

  892. the Hebrew

  893. term

  894. forever

  895. it's found

  896. eight times

  897. in this chapter

  898. the foreverness

  899. of God's promises

  900. through David

  901. are a significant

  902. feature of the

  903. Davidic covenant

  904. God is promising

  905. a king

  906. for his people

  907. a name

  908. a throne

  909. which will

  910. last forever

  911. but there sits

  912. Israel

  913. with no name

  914. no land

  915. no king

  916. well even though

  917. Israel is in exile

  918. God continues to

  919. raise up prophets

  920. the people are

  921. idolatrous

  922. but these prophets

  923. the rest of the

  924. prophets of the

  925. Old Testament

  926. they begin

  927. adding on

  928. adding on

  929. promises

  930. filling out

  931. this Davidic

  932. promise

  933. this Davidic

  934. covenant

  935. it's pointing to

  936. a future

  937. and fuller

  938. fulfillment

  939. for example

  940. Amos 9

  941. 11

  942. prophesied

  943. that a great

  944. day is coming

  945. on which

  946. I the Lord

  947. shall raise up

  948. the tabernacle

  949. of David

  950. which has

  951. fallen down

  952. and I shall

  953. repair

  954. its damages

  955. I will raise

  956. up its ruins

  957. and rebuild it

  958. there's the image

  959. of David's house

  960. fallen down

  961. like a tent

  962. that had all

  963. the pegs

  964. knocked out

  965. and the Lord

  966. says I will

  967. take that

  968. tabernacle of

  969. David

  970. and put it

  971. back up

  972. I'd like for

  973. you to please

  974. turn to the

  975. book of Isaiah

  976. and this is

  977. where I'm

  978. going to keep

  979. us for the

  980. rest of our

  981. time

  982. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  983. 11

  984. how else did

  985. God add on

  986. promises

  987. and make the

  988. prophecy

  989. be even more

  990. clear of this

  991. anointed messianic

  992. man from the

  993. line of David

  994. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 11:1

  995. 11 verse 1

  996. these Isaiah

  997. passages might

  998. be familiar

  999. to you but I

  1000. hope that you'll

  1001. make the

  1002. connection today

  1003. when you see

  1004. the name of

  1005. David attached

  1006. to these

  1007. Isaiah 11

  1008. starting at

  1009. verse 1

  1010. Isaiah also

  1011. prophesies

  1012. right before

  1013. Israel gets

  1014. taken over

  1015. there shall

  1016. come forth

  1017. a rod

  1018. from the

  1019. stem of

  1020. Jesse

  1021. who was

  1022. Jesse

  1023. David's dad

  1024. a branch

  1025. shall grow

  1026. out of its

  1027. roots

  1028. the spirit

  1029. of the

  1030. Lord shall

  1031. rest upon

  1032. him

  1033. the spirit

  1034. of wisdom

  1035. and understanding

  1036. the spirit

  1037. of counsel

  1038. and might

  1039. the spirit

  1040. of knowledge

  1041. and of the

  1042. fear of the

  1043. Lord

  1044. with the

  1045. breath of

  1046. his lips

  1047. he shall

  1048. slay the

  1049. wicked

  1050. verse 5

  1051. righteousness

  1052. shall be

  1053. the belt

  1054. of his

  1055. loins

  1056. and faithfulness

  1057. the belt

  1058. of his

  1059. waist

  1060. so for

  1061. all the

  1062. believing

  1063. Israelites

  1064. like Daniel

  1065. who received

  1066. the prophecies

  1067. God gave

  1068. through Isaiah

  1069. they're expecting

  1070. from the

  1071. physical line

  1072. of David

  1073. a man

  1074. to be born

  1075. that God

  1076. will raise

  1077. up

  1078. and in a way

  1079. they could only

  1080. accept by

  1081. faith

  1082. he will have

  1083. a belt

  1084. of righteousness

  1085. he will be

  1086. so full of

  1087. the Holy Spirit

  1088. he will pour

  1089. out wisdom

  1090. and his words

  1091. will slay

  1092. the enemies

  1093. these are

  1094. the expectations

  1095. they would put

  1096. in this

  1097. Davidic

  1098. man

  1099. that God

  1100. would raise

  1101. up

  1102. his

  1103. anointed

  1104. one

  1105. well let's

  1106. see how

  1107. God fulfilled

  1108. these

  1109. glorious

  1110. promises

  1111. in Christ's

  1112. first coming

  1113. would you

  1114. turn back

  1115. in Isaiah

  1116. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  1117. chapter 9

  1118. Isaiah 9

  1119. starting at

  1120. verse 6

  1121. this is how

  1122. the Lord

  1123. God

  1124. fulfilled

  1125. the promises

  1126. of the

  1127. Davidic

  1128. covenant

  1129. in Christ's

  1130. first coming

  1131. Isaiah

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  1132. chapter 9

  1133. starting at

  1134. verse 6

  1135. for unto

  1136. us

  1137. a child

  1138. is born

  1139. unto us

  1140. a son

  1141. is given

  1142. and the

  1143. government

  1144. will be

  1145. upon his

  1146. shoulders

  1147. and his

  1148. name

  1149. will be

  1150. called

  1151. wonderful

  1152. counselor

  1153. mighty

  1154. God

  1155. everlasting

  1156. father

  1157. prince of

  1158. peace

  1159. of the

  1160. increase

  1161. of his

  1162. government

  1163. and peace

  1164. there will

  1165. be no

  1166. end

  1167. it's

  1168. forever

  1169. upon the

  1170. throne

  1171. of David

  1172. and over

  1173. his kingdom

  1174. to order

  1175. it and

  1176. establish it

  1177. with judgment

  1178. and justice

  1179. from that

  1180. time

  1181. forward

  1182. even

  1183. forever

  1184. the zeal

  1185. of the

  1186. Lord of

  1187. hosts

  1188. will perform

  1189. this

  1190. amen

  1191. do you see

  1192. the Davidic

  1193. covenant

  1194. the Lord

  1195. never forgot

  1196. about it

  1197. he wrapped

  1198. more glorious

  1199. promises

  1200. more specific

  1201. ways that

  1202. only God

  1203. could fulfill

  1204. he will be

  1205. called mighty

  1206. God

  1207. but he's

  1208. from the

  1209. house of

  1210. David

  1211. he's from

  1212. the throne

  1213. of David

  1214. and will

  1215. rule over

  1216. the kingdom

  1217. of David

  1218. but he's

  1219. the everlasting

  1220. father

  1221. God made

  1222. David

  1223. a shepherd

  1224. into a

  1225. king

  1226. Christ

  1227. the king

  1228. of kings

  1229. became

  1230. a man

  1231. and a

  1232. shepherd

  1233. the eternal

  1234. divine

  1235. father

  1236. promised

  1237. that God

  1238. the son

  1239. shall take

  1240. a body

  1241. and he

  1242. will be

  1243. the only

  1244. mediator

  1245. between God

  1246. and man

  1247. he will be

  1248. the temple

  1249. the meeting

  1250. place

  1251. God

  1252. promised

  1253. my son

  1254. shall never

  1255. commit a

  1256. single

  1257. iniquity

  1258. and nothing

  1259. that pleases

  1260. me will

  1261. my son

  1262. leave

  1263. undone

  1264. he'll do

  1265. it all

  1266. and yet

  1267. my son

  1268. will take

  1269. the rod

  1270. of men

  1271. and the

  1272. blows

  1273. of the

  1274. sons

  1275. of men

  1276. for your

  1277. sins

  1278. in your

  1279. place

  1280. God

  1281. brought

  1282. peace

  1283. to his

  1284. nation

  1285. by David

  1286. being a

  1287. bloody

  1288. man

  1289. of war

  1290. and Christ

  1291. went to

  1292. war with

  1293. sin

  1294. Satan

  1295. worldliness

  1296. and he

  1297. became

  1298. bloody

  1299. to bring

  1300. peace

  1301. to his

  1302. nation

  1303. King

  1304. Jesus

  1305. rules

  1306. over his

  1307. people

  1308. with his

  1309. moral

  1310. law

  1311. written

  1312. on your

  1313. hearts

  1314. put into

  1315. your

  1316. minds

  1317. his

  1318. kingdom

  1319. is not

  1320. a kingdom

  1321. of lawlessness

  1322. but it's a

  1323. kingdom of

  1324. true peace

  1325. do you see

  1326. how Robespierre

  1327. was wrong

  1328. but his

  1329. words were

  1330. right

  1331. that's the

  1332. only way

  1333. the king

  1334. had to

  1335. die

  1336. that his

  1337. nation

  1338. might live

  1339. the zeal

  1340. of the

  1341. Lord of

  1342. hosts

  1343. performed

  1344. this

  1345. through

  1346. Jesus

  1347. Christ

  1348. and that's

  1349. how God

  1350. fulfills

  1351. the forever

  1352. forever

  1353. the

  1354. forever

  1355. of the

  1356. Davidic

  1357. covenant

  1358. verse 15

  1359. of our

  1360. sermon

  1361. text

  1362. my

  1363. mercy

  1364. my

  1365. loving

  1366. kindness

  1367. my

  1368. covenant

  1369. faithfulness

  1370. shall not

  1371. depart

  1372. from my

  1373. son Jesus

  1374. or any

  1375. who are

  1376. in him

  1377. do you

  1378. see how God

  1379. fulfilled these

  1380. promises

  1381. when Christ

  1382. first came

  1383. to earth

  1384. well there's

  1385. more glorious

  1386. promises still

  1387. attached to the

  1388. Davidic covenant

  1389. I believe

  1390. I believe God

  1391. will finally

  1392. and fully

  1393. fulfill all of

  1394. these promises

  1395. with Christ's

  1396. second coming

  1397. our sermon

  1398. text verse 10

  1399. says I will

  1400. give a place

  1401. for my people

  1402. I will plant

  1403. them that they

  1404. may dwell in a

  1405. place of their

  1406. own and move

  1407. no more

  1408. that's not

  1409. fulfilled yet

  1410. Peter calls

  1411. the church

  1412. Gentiles and

  1413. Jews alike

  1414. sojourners

  1415. pilgrims

  1416. we're more

  1417. like Abraham

  1418. and Isaac

  1419. and Jacob

  1420. who are

  1421. sojourners

  1422. but there

  1423. will come

  1424. a time

  1425. where we

  1426. will have

  1427. a place

  1428. to dwell

  1429. forever

  1430. we won't

  1431. have to

  1432. move

  1433. anymore

  1434. no more

  1435. shall the

  1436. sons of

  1437. wickedness

  1438. oppress

  1439. them

  1440. we're not

  1441. there yet

  1442. that hasn't

  1443. happened

  1444. and they

  1445. shall have

  1446. rest from

  1447. all their

  1448. enemies

  1449. to me

  1450. this still

  1451. awaits

  1452. final fulfillment

  1453. at Christ's

  1454. second coming

  1455. you're in

  1456. Isaiah

  1457. look at

  1458. Isaiah

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  1459. chapter 9

  1460. I'm sorry

  1461. chapter 11

  1462. now

  1463. Isaiah 11

    Isaiah 11:9

  1464. verse 9

  1465. the way I

  1466. read the

  1467. Bible is

  1468. that the

  1469. days are

  1470. still to

  1471. come

  1472. in the

  1473. words of

  1474. Isaiah

  1475. 11

  1476. 9

  1477. when they

  1478. shall not

  1479. hurt

  1480. nor destroy

  1481. in all

  1482. my holy

  1483. mountain

  1484. for the

  1485. earth

  1486. shall be

  1487. full

  1488. of the

  1489. knowledge

  1490. of the

  1491. Lord

  1492. as the

  1493. waters

  1494. cover

  1495. the sea

  1496. don't we

  1497. long for

  1498. that day

  1499. Jeremiah 23

  1500. 5

  1501. behold the

  1502. days are

  1503. coming says

  1504. the Lord

  1505. that I will

  1506. raise to

  1507. David a

  1508. branch of

  1509. righteousness

  1510. a king

  1511. shall reign

  1512. and prosper

  1513. and execute

  1514. judgment and

  1515. righteousness

  1516. in all the

  1517. earth

  1518. and the

  1519. Lord is doing

  1520. that now in a

  1521. spiritual sense

  1522. ruling over his

  1523. people his

  1524. church that are

  1525. coming from all

  1526. the nations

  1527. over all the

  1528. earth but there

  1529. will come a

  1530. day when

  1531. our God

  1532. in the

  1533. flesh Jesus

  1534. Christ will

  1535. bring the

  1536. new heavens

  1537. the new

  1538. earth the

  1539. glorious forever

  1540. kingdom that

  1541. shall never

  1542. be moved

  1543. and like the

  1544. queen who

  1545. traveled to

  1546. see Solomon

  1547. Christ's bride

  1548. from all

  1549. nations will

  1550. one day meet

  1551. Jesus we

  1552. will say

  1553. like she

  1554. did oh you

  1555. are even

  1556. greater than

  1557. what we

  1558. heard and

  1559. imagined now

  1560. that we

  1561. meet you

  1562. in person

  1563. we will

  1564. say happy

  1565. are we

  1566. who get

  1567. to stand

  1568. continually

  1569. before you

  1570. in your

  1571. presence and

  1572. hear your

  1573. wisdom blessed

  1574. be you oh

  1575. Lord God you

  1576. have delighted

  1577. in us and

  1578. for our good

  1579. the father has

  1580. set you on

  1581. his throne to

  1582. be our king

  1583. forevermore

  1584. so church we

  1585. need a king

  1586. on earth our

  1587. king was

  1588. crowned with

  1589. thorns but

  1590. in heaven the

  1591. Lord Jesus

  1592. Christ is

  1593. crowned with

  1594. many crowns as

  1595. we sing he is

  1596. our lamb upon

  1597. the throne

  1598. awake my soul

  1599. and sing of

  1600. him who died

  1601. for thee and

  1602. hail him as

  1603. thy matchless

  1604. king through

  1605. all eternity

  1606. so praise God

  1607. church the

  1608. living glorified

  1609. Jesus Christ

  1610. he is the

  1611. king we need

  1612. all hail king

  1613. Jesus until he

  1614. returns

  1615. amen let's go to

  1616. the Lord in

  1617. prayer

  1618. father I thank

  1619. you for your

  1620. word how you

  1621. are true to

  1622. your word how

  1623. all of your

  1624. promises find

  1625. their yes and

  1626. amen in Jesus

  1627. Christ and how

  1628. your Holy Spirit

  1629. helps us to see

  1630. how all of

  1631. scripture points

  1632. to him and

  1633. his glory I

  1634. thank you for

  1635. these dear

  1636. brothers and

  1637. sisters who

  1638. believe in you

  1639. by faith

  1640. thank you

  1641. Lord that we

  1642. can confess

  1643. together we

  1644. see Christ the

  1645. king of kings

  1646. the true and

  1647. better David

  1648. lowly shepherd

  1649. mighty king

  1650. he the champion

  1651. in the battle

  1652. where oh death

  1653. is now thy

  1654. sting in our

  1655. place he bled

  1656. and conquered

  1657. we crown him

  1658. lord of

  1659. majesty his

  1660. shall be the

  1661. throne forever

  1662. and we shall

  1663. air his people

  1664. be all glory

  1666. amen
