  1. I'm going to read in Matthew 28, starting at verse 9.

  2. And after verse 9 and 10, we're going to skip to verse 16.

  3. This is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  4. It's God's very own word for you, his people.

  5. After I'm done reading, I'll say this is the word of the Lord.

  6. If you receive it that way, you can say thanks be to God.

  7. Matthew 28, verse 9.

    Matthew 28:9

  8. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, Rejoice.

  9. So they came and held him by the feet and worshipped him.

  10. This is the risen Lord appearing to his followers.

  11. And then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid.

  12. Go and tell my brethren to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.

  13. Now please look at verse 16.

  14. Then the eleven disciples went away to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them.

  15. When they saw him, they worshipped him.

  16. But some doubted.

  17. Verse 18.

  18. And when Jesus came and spoke to them, saying,

  19. All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.

  20. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

  21. teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.

  22. And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.

  23. Amen.

  24. This is the word of the Lord.

  25. Thanks be to God.

  26. You may be seated.

  27. This green grass that you have your feet on will soon fade in a couple months.

  28. These beautiful flowers all around us, they will fade as well.

  29. But this is the word of the Lord that will endure forever.

  30. Let's pray.

  31. Lord, will you please speak to your people.

  32. And to those that you will call.

  33. And to those that need to hear truth today.

  34. Please speak in a powerful way, Lord.

  35. Illuminate the word that you've revealed by your Holy Spirit.

  36. Amen.

  37. Amen.

  38. I want to talk to you today about the King of Kings.

  39. Jesus is the King.

  40. All authority has already been given to Him.

  41. Amen.

  42. And it may be harder for us to receive this glorious truth that Jesus is the King.

  43. Because we live in a democracy.

  44. In a democracy after a few centuries, the virtues that have been commonly held, very quickly those virtues go mad.

  45. And get pushed to extremes.

  46. And end up turning the moral law of God upside down in the minds of fallen people.

  47. But Jesus is King.

  48. And His kingdom is already in effect.

  49. If you visit a more ancient country than ours, and you go to visit a palace, you'll be able to see in the architecture, the way that that city developed.

  50. Wherever the palace of the King is, around that palace, you'll see mansions.

  51. All the noblemen wanting to be as close as they could to the King.

  52. And those who can afford to be that close in the capital where the King would go to hunt, more in the countryside.

  53. There's the retreat palace.

  54. The wealthy of that region will try to build their homes and their estates as close as they can to the King.

  55. If you're close to the King, you share in the status.

  56. You share in that citizenship of the kingdom.

  57. It's hard for us to understand this in our modern society.

  58. Even before us, during World War II, C.S. Lewis observed,

  59. where men are forbidden to honor a king, they honor millionaires, athletes, and film stars instead.

  60. For spiritual nature, like bodily nature, will be served.

  61. Deny it food, and it will gobble up poison.

  62. Do you understand what C.S. Lewis was writing?

  63. Your spiritual nature needs to worship a king.

  64. And if you deny that to your soul, your soul will gobble up poison instead.

  65. If you don't worship the King of Kings, you will worship an idol.

  66. Unless you worship King Jesus, you will be giving your soul poison.

  67. Listen, He alone is the King of Kings.

  68. And He has declared in verse 18 of our sermon text,

  69. All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.

  70. So for today's sermon text, your expectation, it's really that phrase, verse 18, that I want to open up for us today.

  71. The authority of King Jesus.

  72. First, let's understand what type of authority.

  73. All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.

  74. It's all of the authority that was promised to David.

  75. And through further revelation, long after David was dead and buried.

  76. And it's all bound up in what we've described last week as the Davidic covenant.

  77. The name of David shows up in the New Testament in many places, but nowhere more than in the book of Matthew.

  78. 16 times is David mentioned in the book of Matthew.

  79. More than anywhere else in the New Testament.

  80. I know we're just jumping into this book as part of our theme and series.

  81. But what you need to know about the book of Matthew, it's one of the four gospels.

  82. Every gospel has a different audience and a different purpose.

  83. During the Middle Ages, when the church was illiterate,

  84. they would use art to depict the themes of books of the Bible and of Bible stories.

  85. John was depicted, as we saw, as an eagle.

  86. It soars.

  87. The divine theology in the book of John is so high and elevated.

  88. Luke was depicted as an ox, which is the head among the bovines.

  89. And it was the sacrificial system that was focused in Luke.

  90. So in Luke, we get detailed accounts of how perfect Christ is

  91. as the final sacrifice to do away with the blood of animals.

  92. In the Gospel of Mark, it's the shortest.

  93. It's very fast-paced.

  94. And the word immediately is always used to show the fast pace.

  95. It's like a galloping lion.

  96. And that's the image associated with the Gospel of Mark, is a lion.

  97. Well, what about Matthew?

  98. And the image for Matthew is a man from heaven,

  99. or a messenger that's divine.

  100. It's been depicted like an angel,

  101. showing the heavenliness of this messenger,

  102. but the face is the face of a man.

  103. Do you see the point?

  104. Jesus Christ, God Himself, became a man.

  105. Not just any man.

  106. He became the man that was promised in the covenant,

  107. associated with the name of David.

  108. All authority has been given to me, Jesus says.

  109. Earlier in the book of Matthew, Matthew 8, 9,

  110. a centurion from the Roman Empire had used that exact same word.

  111. And he told Jesus,

  112. I am a man under authority.

  113. In other words, the power that I have,

  114. the might of my army,

  115. it's only as far as it's been given to me by Caesar himself.

  116. I'm a man under authority.

  117. But with that authority, the centurion said,

  118. the soldiers under me will do whatever I command.

  119. If I say go, they go.

  120. That's the same word Jesus uses to say,

  121. all authority has been given to Him.

  122. Authority.

  123. It's the might, the strength, the force,

  124. the jurisdiction, the magistrate of Jesus.

  125. It's the rule that He has over His government.

  126. It's the right and power of Him

  127. whose will and commands must be submitted to

  128. and obeyed by others.

  129. Just like the centurion in the Roman army.

  130. That's the type of authority Jesus is claiming.

  131. I want to walk through four ways

  132. that this authority is given to Jesus.

  133. First, He is the King.

  134. And He has all the authority

  135. promised to this royal Davidic line

  136. from within national Israel.

  137. He is now the risen, glorified man.

  138. And as He ascends into heaven,

  139. in the same passage,

  140. He's raising up, blessing His disciples,

  141. promising the Holy Spirit.

  142. He is now lifted up

  143. to show that He's the one fulfilling

  144. all of those forever promises

  145. of a throne that will last and never end

  146. and will endure for every generation to come.

  147. Would you turn in your book of Matthew?

  148. I want to walk through several ways

  149. that David is associated with

  150. what Christ fulfills.

  151. Turn back to Matthew chapter 1.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  152. In the introduction to each of the four Gospels,

  153. there's a different focus.

  154. What is the focus in the book of Matthew?

  155. Matthew chapter 1, verse 1.

    Matthew 1:1

  156. Well, He tells us very clearly.

  157. He says,

  158. this is the book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ.

  159. So He's interested in the exact bloodline of Jesus.

  160. And notice how Jesus is described.

  161. Jesus Christ, the son of David.

  162. So He comes from this royal line of David.

  163. King Jesus also has authority

  164. as God's conquering warrior.

  165. He is coming on His mission on earth

  166. to drive back Satan

  167. and to undo the curse of sin.

  168. Turn next to Matthew 9.

  169. Just a few pages forward.

  170. Matthew 9, verse 27.

    Matthew 9:27

  171. We read of two blind men

  172. that start to follow Jesus

  173. as He's on this mission

  174. pushing back the power of Satan

  175. and of darkness.

  176. And these men, like many others,

  177. they cry out to Jesus

  178. and look at what they say.

  179. Son of David, have mercy on us.

  180. Let me give you just one more example.

  181. Turn to Matthew 15, verse 22.

    Matthew 15:22

  182. Matthew 15, 22.

  183. In Matthew 15, 22,

  184. a woman from Canaan came from that region

  185. and cried out to Jesus saying,

  186. Have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David.

  187. My daughter is severely demon-possessed.

  188. She's calling on the authority

  189. that Jesus has,

  190. as the royal king from the line of David

  191. who's conquering and advancing

  192. the kingdom of heaven

  193. and pushing back the powers of darkness.

  194. Number three,

  195. King Jesus has all the authority

  196. of the long-expected Messiah.

  197. Messiah means anointed one.

  198. David was anointed by Samuel

  199. and the king was to always be anointed,

  200. receiving this power from God

  201. to rule over God's people.

  202. Now look at Matthew 21, verse 9.

    Matthew 21:9

  203. The long-expected Messiah,

  204. the anointed one.

  205. Matthew 21, verse 9.

    Matthew 21:9

  206. Then the multitudes who went before

  207. and those who followed cried out,

  208. saying, Hosanna to the Son of David.

  209. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

  210. Hosanna in the highest.

  211. This is what the crowds cry out,

  212. recognizing this is the anointed Messiah,

  213. the promised one,

  214. the Son of David.

  215. But look at the reaction

  216. of those ruling in power in verse 15.

  217. When the chief priests and scribes

  218. saw the wonderful things that Jesus did

  219. and the children crying out in the temple,

  220. saying, Hosanna to the Son of David,

  221. they were indignant.

  222. Jesus came and his own recognized him

  223. as the promised Messiah,

  224. the long-expected anointed one.

  225. And fourth,

  226. King Jesus has all authority as God.

  227. He has the authority of God himself

  228. in the flesh,

  229. fully God,

  230. now fully man,

  231. to rule as king over all.

  232. See, David and the promised kings of Israel

  233. were man,

  234. and God was to be the king of Israel.

  235. But in this Davidic covenant,

  236. we're told that it will be a man

  237. from this line of David.

  238. And this would be God himself in the flesh

  239. fulfilling his own covenant.

  240. Look at Matthew 22, verse 41.

    Matthew 22:41

  241. Matthew 22, verse 41.

    Matthew 22:41

  242. Matthew 22, verse 41.

    Matthew 22:41

  243. Matthew 22, verse 41.

    Matthew 22:41

  244. While the Pharisees were gathered together,

  245. Jesus asked them, saying,

  246. What do you think about the Christ?

  247. Whose son is he?

  248. And they said to him,

  249. The son of David.

  250. And he said to them,

  251. How does then David...

  252. I'm sorry.

  253. Jesus said to them,

  254. How then does David in the Spirit,

  255. he's referring to Psalm 2,

  256. call him Lord?

  257. If David calls him Lord,

  258. how is he his son?

  259. Jesus brings before them this mystery

  260. that unless the Holy Spirit illuminated

  261. and God accomplished it,

  262. they could never make sense of this.

  263. This promised Messiah,

  264. this anointed one,

  265. David himself would call Lord.

  266. The anointed Messiah would be God himself

  267. coming into the line of David.

  268. So Jesus fulfilling this

  269. is claiming the authority of God himself,

  270. who David would call Lord.

  271. Lord.

  272. In the Gospel of Matthew,

  273. we see Jesus time and again

  274. driving out demons,

  275. pushing back the powers of darkness.

  276. See, the spiritual battle has existed

  277. as long as sin entered God's creation.

  278. What changed at the Incarnation

  279. is that this spiritual battle

  280. that's taking place in the heavenly realm

  281. was brought to earth.

  282. Christ, who had been at war

  283. with sin and Satan in the spiritual realm.

  284. He took on flesh.

  285. He was incarnate.

  286. And the forces of Satan

  287. in the demonic realm

  288. are fighting him now in the flesh.

  289. In Matthew 9, 6,

  290. Jesus heals a man

  291. and he says,

  292. so that you can know

  293. that the Son of Man has power.

  294. It's the same word as authority

  295. on earth

  296. to forgive sins.

  297. And for this reason,

  298. I say,

  299. get up and walk.

  300. King Jesus

  301. has the authority

  302. of the Davidic covenant.

  303. The King of Kings

  304. now in the flesh.

  305. The man,

  306. the divine man

  307. coming to fulfill

  308. the promise.

  309. So that's the type of authority

  310. Jesus claims.

  311. Now,

  312. what does he have authority over?

  313. Authority

  314. over what?

  315. He says in our sermon text,

  316. it's Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:18

  317. verse 18,

  318. all authority

  319. has been given to me

  320. in heaven

  321. and on earth.

  322. Authority over what?

  323. Over heaven

  324. and earth.

  325. Well,

  326. in Genesis 1, 1,

  327. that same phrase is used,

  328. that in the beginning,

  329. God created

  330. the heavens

  331. and the earth.

  332. God created

  333. the ground

  334. and the sky.

  335. He created the land

  336. and the water.

  337. And so as God the Son,

  338. Jesus Christ

  339. already held

  340. all that authority

  341. as creator.

  342. We read in John 1, 3

  343. that through Christ

  344. all things were made.

  345. But the heavens

  346. also refer to

  347. the spiritual realm.

  348. The heavens refer

  349. to that invisible realm

  350. in which our souls

  351. and our spirits exist.

  352. In Psalm 123,

  353. we read that God

  354. dwells in the heavens.

  355. In Ephesians 2,

    Ephesians 2:2

  356. verse 2,

  357. we're told that

  358. the prince of the power

  359. of the air,

  360. Satan,

  361. the spirit who now works

  362. in the sons of disobedience,

  363. he's in the power

  364. of the air,

  365. so to speak.

  366. So this is referring

  367. to heaven

  368. as the spiritual realm.

  369. In Philippians 2, 9,

  370. we read that God

  371. has now exalted Christ

  372. and given Him

  373. the name

  374. which is above every name,

  375. that at the name of Jesus

  376. every knee should bow.

  377. Listen.

  378. Of those in heaven

  379. and those on earth

  380. and those under the earth

  381. and that every tongue

  382. should confess

  383. that Jesus Christ

  384. is Lord

  385. to the glory

  386. of God the Father.

  387. In the finished work

  388. of Jesus Christ,

  389. He has all power

  390. in the spiritual realm.

  391. He has all power

  392. in the heavenlies,

  393. in the air,

  394. in the realm

  395. of the spirits.

  396. but He also

  397. has all power

  398. on earth

  399. right now.

  400. Jesus is king

  401. over all the earth.

  402. He's Lord of all.

  403. He says that

  404. all the authority

  405. over heaven

  406. and earth

  407. belongs to King Jesus

  408. and He's fulfilling

  409. what was prophesied

  410. in Daniel 4,

    Daniel 4:34

  411. verse 34,

  412. that His dominion

  413. is an everlasting dominion

  414. and He does

  415. according to His will

  416. in the army of heaven,

  417. listen,

  418. and among

  419. the inhabitants

  420. of the earth.

  421. King Jesus rules

  422. heaven

  423. absolutely.

  424. King Jesus rules

  425. over earth

  426. right now

  427. by grace.

  428. but there's a day

  429. that's coming

  430. where His absolute reign

  431. in the spiritual realm

  432. will be just so absolute

  433. on earth

  434. as it is in heaven.

  435. Now is the day

  436. for King Jesus

  437. to call sinners like us,

  438. poor and wretched,

  439. to come to Him

  440. by grace.

  441. Now is Jesus

  442. portrayed for us

  443. with His arms

  444. open wide,

  445. welcoming any sinner.

  446. Come to Jesus

  447. now

  448. while His rule

  449. is gracious.

  450. There will be a day

  451. when every knee

  452. will bow,

  453. not in humble contrition

  454. beholding His loveliness,

  455. but in a conquering way

  456. when His absolute rule

  457. over the spiritual realm

  458. will be realized

  459. on earth.

  460. And that day

  461. it will be too late

  462. to cry for mercy.

  463. Now is the time

  464. of mercy.

  465. Some of you

  466. need this reminder.

  467. If God is so merciful

  468. to a sinner

  469. who doesn't want

  470. to hear His word,

  471. who doesn't want

  472. to pray and sing to Him,

  473. how much more merciful

  474. is He still to you

  475. who believe in Him,

  476. who love Him?

  477. Remember,

  478. He rules over you

  479. now by grace.

  480. Be encouraged,

  481. be comforted

  482. by that truth.

  483. Well, we've seen

  484. what type of authority,

  485. we've seen authority

  486. over what.

  487. Next,

  488. authority to whom

  489. and by whom.

  490. Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:18

  491. verse 18 says

  492. that all authority

  493. has been given

  494. to me.

  495. Who gave it?

  496. Who received it?

  497. Given

  498. means to be granted,

  499. to have something

  500. put into one's hands,

  501. have something delivered

  502. over to you,

  503. bestowed to you

  504. as a gift,

  505. can mean to be

  506. appointed as an office.

  507. It's been given.

  508. In Matthew 4 and 9,

  509. we read that

  510. all things

  511. I will give you

  512. if you fall down

  513. and worship me.

  514. And that was

  515. the words that Satan

  516. used to tempt Jesus

  517. in the wilderness.

  518. I, Satan,

  519. will give you

  520. all the things

  521. on the earth

  522. that you want.

  523. And our Lord Jesus,

  524. hearing this,

  525. trusted instead

  526. in God's word.

  527. Satan's head now

  528. is crushed.

  529. But Satan

  530. is still allowed

  531. to terrorize

  532. anyone outside

  533. of Christ

  534. on this earth.

  535. In Ephesians 6,

  536. we read of rulers

  537. in the darkness

  538. over this present

  539. evil age.

  540. These are principalities

  541. and powers.

  542. A spiritual host

  543. of wickedness

  544. that continues

  545. to cause damage

  546. in the spiritual realm.

  547. But,

  548. Jesus says

  549. to His church,

  550. to the apostles,

  551. through them

  552. we get the New Testament

  553. and we receive this,

  554. that all authority

  555. has already been given

  556. to Him

  557. by the Father.

  558. So this means

  559. God the Father

  560. representing

  561. the one

  562. holy triune

  563. Creator

  564. has given

  565. the authority

  566. to Christ.

  567. The perfect,

  568. righteous,

  569. risen,

  570. and glorified

  571. mediator.

  572. Jesus Christ,

  573. fully God,

  574. fully man.

  575. God the Son

  576. who took on

  577. a body forever.

  578. He has received

  579. all authority

  580. from God.

  581. When did this happen?

  582. Christ received

  583. this authority

  584. at His resurrection.

  585. In Matthew 28,

  586. Christ has not yet

  587. ascended

  588. to the right hand

  589. of the Father

  590. in His glorified body.

  591. He's still with

  592. His disciples on earth,

  593. but it's already

  594. been given to Him.

  595. So this authority

  596. over heaven and earth

  597. was given to Jesus

  598. when the Father

  599. rose Him from the dead,

  600. when the Spirit

  601. brought that breath

  602. back into His lungs,

  603. and when Christ

  604. took up His own life

  605. again just as He

  606. had laid it down.

  607. At His resurrection,

  608. Jesus rose victorious.

  609. Ever since His resurrection,

  610. Jesus now holds

  611. the keys of life

  612. and death.

  613. King Jesus has already

  614. crushed the ancient

  615. serpent's head.

  616. He has already

  617. broke the bonds

  618. of sin

  619. over His people.

  620. He's already

  621. killed death.

  622. The Son fulfilled

  623. that covenant

  624. of works

  625. that the Lord

  626. had given to Adam

  627. and Adam failed

  628. to keep.

  629. The triune God

  630. has already fulfilled

  631. the eternal covenant

  632. of redemption

  633. that God

  634. in His freedom

  635. counseled

  636. Father, Son,

  637. and Holy Spirit

  638. to redeem

  639. a people for Himself

  640. before the foundations

  641. of the world.

  642. and God the Father

  643. now has given

  644. our Lord Jesus Christ

  645. the reward

  646. of His obedience.

  647. He has blessed

  648. the suffering servant

  649. with everything

  650. that He promised.

  651. So the work

  652. of the Son

  653. is finished.

  654. That means that

  655. Jesus Christ

  656. can never lose

  657. the blessings

  658. that He merited

  659. for us.

  660. It means that

  661. His place

  662. as the King

  663. of kings

  664. cannot be shaken.

  665. all authority

  666. has already

  667. been given

  668. to Him

  669. never to be lost.

  670. Where does

  671. your assurance

  672. come from?

  673. All authority

  674. in heaven

  675. and on earth

  676. has already

  677. been given

  678. to Christ

  679. for His sake alone.

  680. Nothing can take

  681. you out of His hands.

  682. Praise the Lord.

  683. Well, that's

  684. who gave the authority

  685. and that's who received

  686. this authority.

  687. Now, how much

  688. authority?

  689. How much authority

  690. did the Father

  691. give the Son?

  692. Well, it's one

  693. little word that

  694. anyone here

  695. who can read

  696. first or second graders,

  697. you can see

  698. in Matthew 28

    Matthew 28:18

  699. verse 18,

  700. how much authority

  701. did God give

  702. Jesus?

  703. All authority

  704. has been given

  705. to me.

  706. Just as King David

  707. had all authority

  708. over national Israel,

  709. over all the enemies

  710. that God would

  711. deliver to Him

  712. at the edge

  713. of every single

  714. border of the nation.

  715. In the same way,

  716. Jesus has all

  717. authority

  718. over His kingdom.

  719. The word all,

  720. every authority,

  721. any authority,

  722. the whole authority.

  723. There's no authority

  724. not given to Jesus.

  725. It's the same word,

  726. all,

  727. that's used in

  728. Matthew 3.15,

  729. that Jesus came

  730. to fulfill

  731. all righteousness.

  732. That same word

  733. is what Jesus

  734. now says,

  735. all authority

  736. has been given

  737. to me.

  738. There's not a single

  739. act of righteousness

  740. God did not fulfill

  741. in Jesus Christ.

  742. And all that allness,

  743. that fullness

  744. of His righteousness,

  745. He claims to say,

  746. the same amount

  747. of authority

  748. is what I have now.

  749. This is such good news.

  750. Ephesians 1.21,

  751. we read that God

  752. has placed

  753. our Lord Jesus Christ

  754. above all rule

  755. and authority

  756. and power

  757. and dominion

  758. and above every name

  759. that is named,

  760. not only in this age

  761. but also in the age

  762. to come.

  763. And that God the Father

  764. put all things

  765. under the feet

  766. of Jesus

  767. and gave Him,

  768. our Lord Jesus Christ,

  769. as head

  770. over all things

  771. in the church.

  772. That's the gift

  773. we receive from

  774. the Father.

  775. It's Christ.

  776. with all authority

  777. given to you

  778. as your head,

  779. as your king.

  780. Just as David

  781. took all the land

  782. of Israel,

  783. he took it

  784. by conquest.

  785. The mighty men

  786. rose up,

  787. they charged

  788. with David.

  789. The whole nation

  790. pushed back

  791. these rebellious ones

  792. who hated God

  793. and preferred idols.

  794. He pushed them

  795. back by conquest.

  796. And so our Lord Jesus,

  797. He takes over

  798. your soul

  799. and mine

  800. by conquest.

  801. He owns

  802. your whole life

  803. as king.

  804. If you are united

  805. to Him,

  806. He has purchased you

  807. by His blood.

  808. There is no

  809. corner

  810. of your soul

  811. for the lusts

  812. of your flesh

  813. to hide their head.

  814. He owns

  815. all of you.

  816. King Jesus

  817. is Lord

  818. of all.

  819. That's how much

  820. authority the Father

  821. has given Him.

  822. The last question

  823. I want to bring

  824. to you

  825. before I invite

  826. you to respond

  827. is authority

  828. given for what purpose?

  829. For what purpose

  830. does Christ

  831. have this authority?

  832. All authority

  833. has been given

  834. to me

  835. in heaven

  836. and on earth

  837. for what purpose?

  838. In Luke 22

    Luke 22:29

  839. verse 29,

  840. Jesus sets

  841. this pattern.

  842. He says

  843. that the Father

  844. promised to bestow

  845. the Son

  846. a kingdom.

  847. And now

  848. Jesus turns

  849. to the disciples

  850. and says,

  851. now disciples,

  852. I bestow

  853. to you

  854. a kingdom

  855. just as my Father

  856. bestowed

  857. a kingdom

  858. to me.

  859. That word

  860. bestow a kingdom.

  861. In the Greek

  862. it's to covenant.

  863. My Father

  864. covenanted

  865. to me a kingdom

  866. and in the same way

  867. I am covenanting

  868. a kingdom

  869. to you,

  870. my church.

  871. one observer

  872. pointed out

  873. that as the Father

  874. made this covenant

  875. of redemption

  876. with the Son,

  877. so now Jesus

  878. representing the covenant

  879. of grace

  880. to His people,

  881. He covenants

  882. in a binding way

  883. that He fulfills

  884. fully for you.

  885. And in John 20

    John 20:21

  886. verse 21

  887. He says,

  888. as the Father

  889. sent me

  890. so I am sending you.

  891. Do you get the pattern?

  892. the mission of God

  893. is mediated

  894. through Christ.

  895. As the Father

  896. initiated this

  897. ministry

  898. of covenanting

  899. of people

  900. through the Son,

  901. the Son continues

  902. this ministry

  903. through His church.

  904. The kingdom

  905. of God's

  906. gracious covenant

  907. is extended

  908. to all

  909. through the church.

  910. Our Lord Jesus Christ

  911. shares His authority

  912. with His church.

  913. Authority for what?

  914. To make disciples

  915. as you go.

  916. Verse 19

  917. Go and make disciples.

  918. Our Lord Jesus

  919. shares His authority

  920. with His church

  921. to call all disciples

  922. to Christ

  923. from all the nations.

  924. Verse 19

  925. Our Lord Jesus

  926. shares His authority

  927. with His church

  928. to baptize disciples.

  929. Give those whom

  930. I have called

  931. the outward sign

  932. of their inward union

  933. to me.

  934. And our Lord Jesus Christ

  935. shares His authority

  936. with His church

  937. to give His name

  938. to His people.

  939. Baptize them

  940. in the name

  941. of the Father,

  942. the Son,

  943. and the Holy Spirit.

  944. Let them be assured

  945. that they are adopted

  946. into my family.

  947. They belong to me.

  948. The church has the authority

  949. to do that

  950. in the name of Jesus.

  951. Our family adopted

  952. one of our children

  953. and that's a day

  954. we'll never forget.

  955. It's a renaming ceremony.

  956. From this day on

  957. this precious little child's name

  958. will be this.

  959. And this represents

  960. our family.

  961. This child belongs

  962. to this household.

  963. This child

  964. is blood of our blood

  965. and flesh of our flesh.

  966. That's what happens

  967. in a baptism.

  968. The name of Jesus.

  969. The name of God the Father,

  970. the Son,

  971. and the Holy Spirit

  972. through the ministry

  973. of the King of Kings

  974. with the authority

  975. the Father gave Him

  976. and He extends

  977. to the church

  978. is put on

  979. a child of God.

  980. Your identity

  981. is secure

  982. in Him forever.

  983. In Christ

  984. we are blood of blood

  985. and flesh of flesh

  986. because we are united

  987. in Christ Jesus.

  988. Our Lord Jesus Christ

  989. shared His authority

  990. with His church

  991. to teach disciples

  992. spirit-empowered obedience.

  993. Amen.

  994. Teaching them

  995. to observe

  996. all things

  997. that I have commanded you.

  998. The logic flowing

  999. from the theme

  1000. of authority

  1001. is very clear.

  1002. If you're a citizen

  1003. of the kingdom

1004. you're near to the king.

  1005. You're noble.

  1006. You're welcome

  1007. among His courts

  1008. and His garden.

  1009. Citizens

  1010. love to obey

  1011. their king.

  1012. And when your king

  1013. is so gracious

  1014. like Jesus

  1015. His law

  1016. is a blessing.

  1017. His rules over you

  1018. are a joy

  1019. to receive that.

1020. I just get to be

  1021. in your kingdom.

  1022. What a blessing.

  1023. Philippians 3

  1024. 20 and 21

  1025. Our citizenship

  1026. is in heaven.

  1027. You already have it.

  1028. And from it

  1029. we await

  1030. a Savior

  1031. the Lord Jesus Christ

  1032. who will transform

  1033. our lowly body

  1034. to be like

  1035. His glorious body

  1036. by the power

  1037. that enables Him

  1038. even to subject

  1039. all things

  1040. to Himself.

  1041. So that's the purpose

  1042. of this authority

  1043. is to extend

  1044. His kingdom

  1045. through His church.

  1046. Jesus

  1047. is already

  1048. King of kings.

  1049. Amen.

  1050. He rules

  1051. with all authority

  1052. over heaven

  1053. and over earth.

  1054. So before you

  1055. leave today

  1056. respond.

  1057. When you behold

  1058. the risen

  1059. Jesus Christ

  1060. who holds

  1061. all authority

  1062. you too

  1063. will do

  1064. like His followers.

1065. We saw in verse 9

  1066. of our sermon text.

  1067. When you behold Him

  1068. you will

  1069. run up to Him

  1070. and you will

  1071. hold Him

  1072. by the feet

  1073. and you will

  1074. worship Him.

  1075. King Jesus

  1076. also says to you

  1077. do not fear

  1078. but rejoice.

  1079. He is King

  1080. so you can rejoice.

  1081. He says

  1082. observe all things

  1083. that I

  1084. your King

  1085. command you

  1086. by what strength

  1087. by what power

  1088. for how long

  1089. by my strength

  1090. says Jesus

  1091. by my power

  1092. until I return.

  1093. And here's the promise

  1094. in verse 20

  1095. for lo

  1096. I am

  1097. with you

  1098. always

  1099. even

  1100. to the end

  1101. of the age.

  1102. and look

  1103. at how He's

  1104. been true

  1105. to His promise

  1106. through every

  1107. century

  1108. of the church.

  1109. Your spirit

  1110. will be served.

  1111. If you deny

  1112. your spirit

  1113. food

  1114. it will

  1115. gobble up

  1116. poison.

  1117. Don't deny

  1118. your soul

  1119. the worship

  1120. it was created

  1121. to enjoy.

  1122. King Jesus

  1123. is worthy.

  1124. He is worthy.

  1125. worthy.

  1126. We sing

  1127. that He is

  1128. worthy

  1129. of all

  1130. blessing

  1131. and honor

  1132. and glory.

  1133. The good news

  1134. is you're not

  1135. just near

  1136. His palace.

  1137. You're not

  1138. just on the

  1139. suburbs

  1140. trying to be

  1141. close to the

  1142. kingdom of God.

  1143. You're inside.

  1144. You're in it.

  1145. You're already

  1146. a citizen.

  1147. You're behind

  1148. the gates

  1149. and the walls.

  1150. You're secure

  1151. with Jesus

  1152. ruling over you.

  1153. And He's

  1154. gone to prepare

  1155. a place for you

  1156. in His Father's

  1157. house.

  1158. And He sealed

  1159. this covenant

  1160. promise of grace

  1161. to you with His

  1162. own blood.

  1163. And He says

  1164. I can't wait

  1165. for that day

  1166. when we're going

  1167. to drink

  1168. and celebrate

  1169. at this feast

  1170. together.

  1171. His only

  1172. is the name

  1173. above all names.

  1174. Jesus alone

  1175. is worthy

  1176. to be praised.

  1177. Enjoy peace

  1178. under His

  1179. authority now.

  1180. And praise Him.

  1181. Praise how

  1182. majestic He is.

  1183. How mighty.

  1184. And how great

  1185. is our God

  1186. in the finished

  1187. work of Jesus

  1188. Christ.

  1189. Amen.

  1190. Let's pray in

  1191. response

  1192. to who He is.

  1193. Let's pray in

1194. response to who He is.
