  1. Today's sermon text is Jeremiah 31, starting at verse 29.

  2. As a point of reference, many of you are familiar with the story of Daniel and the Hebrews who were carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

  3. When they were growing up and still living in Jerusalem, they would have heard the warnings that God gave to national Israel through the prophet Jeremiah.

  4. But most in Israel would have rejected Jeremiah. They considered him a madman.

  5. And he was bringing only bad news that their kings did not want to hear.

  6. Because Israel did not repent, national Israel suffered the consequences of breaking God's law.

  7. And they were carried off into exile in Babylon.

  8. In this ministry, Jeremiah was thrown into a muddy pit and left for dead.

  9. He was rejected by his own people, being a prophet of God.

  10. Some have said that Jeremiah suffered more at the hands of the rulers of Israel and Jerusalem than any other prophet, except for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  11. So this word in this heavy, dark book of Jeremiah brings us some of the most glorious promises of God's enduring covenant faithfulness.

  12. How even though these people are so rebellious and they're trying to kill even the messenger, Jeremiah, that God will bring a new covenant.

  13. He will be faithful to his people.

  14. And let's hear this promise from Jeremiah 31, beginning at verse 29.

  15. This is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear and sufficient word.

  16. I'll say this is the word of the Lord. You can respond. Thanks be to God.

  17. Jeremiah 31, starting at verse 29.

  18. In those days they shall say no more.

  19. The fathers have eaten our sour grapes and the children's teeth are set on edge.

  20. But everyone shall die for his own iniquity.

  21. Every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

  22. Verse 31.

  23. Verse 31.

  24. Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,

  25. not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt.

  26. My covenant, which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the Lord.

  27. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord.

  28. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.

  29. I will be their God and they shall be my people.

  30. No more shall every man teach his neighbor and every man his brother, saying,

  31. Know the Lord, for they shall all know me from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the Lord.

  32. For I will forgive their iniquity and their sin.

  33. I will remember no more.

  34. Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for a light by day in the ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night,

  35. who disturbs the scene and its waves roar.

  36. The Lord of hosts is his name.

  37. If these ordinances depart from before me, says the Lord, then the seed of Israel shall also cease from being a nation before me.

  38. Verse 37.

  39. Thus says the Lord, if heaven above can be measured and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath,

  40. I will also cast off the seed of Israel for all that they have done, says the Lord.

  41. This is the word of the Lord.

  42. Amen.

  43. Amen.

  44. Thanks be to God.

  45. You may be seated.

  46. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  47. Let's pray.

  48. Lord, we believe that your word is powerful.

  49. Your word is alive.

  50. It's active and it's sharp.

  51. The word is the sword of the spirit.

  52. The word is the sword of the spirit.

  53. We pray that your Holy Spirit will take the word that you revealed and that you will pierce us, Lord, to the heart.

  54. Pray that you'll cut away our wrong understanding of you.

  55. And that with your word, Lord, you will prune us.

  56. You will make us to bear fruit that keeps with the covenant that Jesus cut in his blood.

  57. We know that on our own.

  58. We know that on our own.

  59. We have no strength, Lord.

  60. I confess that as the one standing before your people to minister your word, I have no strength, no words of my own.

  61. I pray for your help.

  62. I pray that you'll guard my lips.

  63. That what I preach to your people, Lord, will be edifying.

  64. That it will exalt Christ as the Lord of your people.

  65. We pray this for his sake alone.

  66. Amen.

  67. If a child gets adopted into a new family,

  68. one of the first things they need to figure out is how is this family the same or how is this family different from what I'm used to?

  69. In our training to be foster parents, completing all those courses for certification,

  70. it's heartbreaking to learn the different types of backgrounds and families that children in the foster care system come out of.

  71. One of the common mistakes the new foster families make is that when a child arrives with their black trash bag full of all their belongings in life,

  72. the family wants right away to take all the belongings out of that black trash bag and put them away

  73. and then throw that old ugly black trash bag away because you're home now.

  74. But it's it's very comforting to the child to know these are all of my possessions.

  75. And if I have to run away from this home, I have everything I need right here in this black bag.

  76. So the counsel to the families receiving a child out of the foster care system is be respectful and understanding of that.

  77. Let the child keep their belongings in this trash bag.

  78. Let them keep everything right where they have it, where they're used to it,

  79. because they've had such bad experiences before this.

  80. Let them just feel safe in your home.

  81. All of us who are born as a human being from the line of Adam and Eve,

  82. we are under the curse of Adam, the federal head.

  83. We have a baggage, trash that we inherited.

  84. And if Jesus has saved you and by the power of his spirit has transferred you from the domain of darkness into his kingdom of light,

  85. and he's baptized you with the name of the triune God, you belong to him.

  86. We're sorting that out.

  87. How new is it to belong to God?

  88. How much baggage do I bring with me?

  89. Am I really at home here?

  90. Or will God have a mood and want to kick me out of his family?

  91. Well, my message for you today is about the new covenant that Jesus says he cut in his own blood.

  92. And the question I want to walk through is how new is the new covenant?

  93. That's the title of today's sermon.

  94. How new is the new covenant?

  95. This is part one of two.

  96. So next week we'll be approaching this new covenant from the New Testament.

  97. But we want to understand what God had promised leading up to the finished work of Christ.

  98. And so the prophecy of the new covenant, it comes in the old covenant in many places,

  99. but nowhere more clearly than in Jeremiah 31.

  100. What we just read is our sermon text.

  101. To the people of God is promised a new covenant.

  102. And I want to see now, what does God say to the people of Israel in Jeremiah 31 about this new covenant

  103. that should set their expectation for how new it will be?

  104. The first observation in verse 29 is that the children of believers will stand on their own in the new covenant.

  105. In the new covenant, the children of believers will stand on their own.

  106. Let's understand this first in the context of Israel.

  107. Israel as a nation was in a covenant with God, but it was a covenant based on works.

  108. Moses gave the law from Sinai.

  109. And if national Israel, a sufficient number in national Israel, obeyed God's law,

  110. the whole nation would enjoy blessings in the land.

  111. The iniquities of the fathers was upon the children in this covenant of works,

  112. but also were the blessings.

  113. In other words, if your parents were part of a generation that feared God,

  114. the next generation could be very spoiled, take it for granted,

  115. and still get to enjoy living in the land.

  116. And that was the pattern for national Israel.

  117. In verse 29, we're told,

  118. In those days, referring to a future day that will come,

  119. the fathers have eaten sour grapes,

  120. but now the principle is going to change.

  121. In the old covenant, when the parents sin,

  122. the children's teeth get set on edge.

  123. But in the new, he says,

  124. In those days, in verse 30,

  125. Everyone shall die for his own iniquity.

  126. Every man who eats sour grapes,

  127. his teeth shall be set on edge.

  128. So he's creating a distinction relating to the children of believers.

  129. He's using some Hebrew prophetic idioms here that we need to explain

  130. to even be able to interpret this correctly.

  131. What does it mean for your tooth to be set on edge

  132. or to eat a sour grape?

  133. A sour grape refers to the vineyard of God

  134. and the vineyard being the people of God

  135. not bearing the fruit that is pleasing to the owner of the vineyard.

  136. To eat a sour grape is to take something that is displeasing to God

  137. and receive it for yourself,

  138. grab it for yourself as a sweet morsel.

  139. It's to see a grape that you know is not pleasing to God

  140. and to consume it.

  141. Sin is treason against God.

  142. Sin is a sour grape.

  143. John Gill applied this to the church.

  144. He said,

  145. Sin, though it may be esteemed a sweet morsel,

  146. is always a sour grape

  147. because it's always committing treason

  148. against the owner of the vineyard.

  149. What does it mean for your teeth to be set on edge?

  150. I had to do a little study on this one.

  151. So think of your tooth like this.

  152. If you put your hand out like this

  153. and you've got the top of your arm

  154. with your fingers being your tooth like this,

  155. if you hit the top of your arm,

  156. it's a sharp edge.

  157. But if your tooth were set on edge

  158. and you try to cut something,

  159. it won't cut.

  160. It's blunt.

  161. So for your teeth to be set on edge,

  162. it means that your teeth are worn down.

  163. It's the dull side of the tooth that's blunt.

  164. It means that you have been gnashing your teeth so much

  165. that your teeth are now flat.

  166. So he says in the Old Covenant,

  167. the parents' sin

  168. and the children's teeth are set on edge.

  169. The sins of the parents in national Israel

  170. are going to bring curses

  171. and a miserable life for the children.

  172. So the generation in Israel

  173. that won't listen to the prophet Jeremiah

  174. is bringing curses on the next generation.

  175. They're going to get carried away into exile

  176. because of the sins of their fathers.

  177. That's the pattern in the Old Covenant.

  178. But notice the change.

  179. He says in those days,

  180. in a future covenant,

  181. the New Covenant,

  182. your standing will not be based

  183. on your parents' works or obedience,

  184. blessing or curse.

  185. It will be based on your own standing,

  186. your own obedience

  187. or rebellion against God.

  188. Look at verse 30 one more time.

  189. Everyone shall die for his own iniquity.

  190. If you have gnashing of the teeth

  191. and your teeth are blunt

  192. and grinded down from the misery of your sin,

  193. you don't get to turn

  194. and blame it on your parents.

  195. You stand on your own.

  196. This is a big change.

  197. Children of believers in those days

  198. will stand on their own.

  199. In John chapter 8 verse 24,

    John 8:24

  200. Jesus says,

  201. I told you that you would die in your sins

  202. if you do not believe in me.

  203. You will indeed die in your sins.

  204. In those days,

  205. each one within national Israel

  206. must believe for themselves in Jesus Christ

  207. if they are to be part of the people of God

  208. and receive the blessings of Christ.

  209. So in the new covenant,

  210. in those days that he's describing

  211. as a future time,

  212. your blessing or curse

  213. is not based on whether you're a Jew or a Gentile,

  214. whether you're in the land

  215. or you're in exile like Daniel,

  216. or whether your parents are pagans or believers.

  217. You must believe in Jesus Christ,

  218. your God and Savior personally.

  219. That's the first observation.

  220. Children of believers stand on their own

  221. in the new covenant.

  222. Do you see what I see in that?

  223. Are you with me still?

  224. Second observation.

  225. The terms of the new covenant

  226. are not according to those of the old.

  227. The terms of the new covenant

  228. are not according to those of the old.

  229. Let's read verses 31 and 32 together.

  230. Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord,

  231. when I will make a new covenant

  232. with the house of Israel

  233. and with the house of Judah,

  234. not according to the covenant

  235. that I made with their fathers.

  236. In that day, I took them by the hand

  237. to lead them out of the land of Egypt.

  238. My covenant, which they broke,

  239. though I was a husband to them,

  240. says the Lord.

  241. The old covenant was made

  242. according to a certain pattern and principle.

  243. But he says in the new covenant,

  244. my covenant with my people in the new covenant

  245. will not be according to that same principle.

  246. Well, what was the principle of the old

  247. before we see the contrast with the new?

  248. The pattern of the old covenant,

  249. we get in Genesis 17, verses 10 through 12.

    Genesis 17:10–12

  250. God says to Abraham,

  251. this is my covenant with you

  252. and your descendants after you,

  253. the covenant you are to keep.

  254. Every male among you shall be circumcised,

  255. the sign of my covenant.

  256. So the fact that you are related to Abraham by blood

  257. means that you're going to receive the sign of the covenant.

  258. It had nothing to do in the person receiving the sign,

  259. nothing in them in the old covenant.

  260. It was simply from here.

  261. You're from the line of Abraham.

  262. Ethnically, biologically, you're of Abraham.

  263. You get the sign of the covenant.

  264. That was the principle in the old covenant.

  265. But he said in verse 22,

  266. the new covenant will not be

  267. according to the covenant that I made.

  268. It'll be different.

  269. It'll work on a different principle.

  270. He says he will establish a covenant,

  271. the covenant that national Israel broke,

  272. and it will be according to other terms

  273. based on a different principle.

  274. What is that principle?

  275. Well, that's what he's going to explain

  276. in the rest of the verses of our sermon text.

  277. He says in verse 33,

  278. this is the covenant that I will make

  279. with the house of Israel after those days.

  280. God kept his word.

  281. National Israel received Jesus Christ.

  282. And God says, I make this covenant with Israel

  283. that everyone who will receive Jesus Christ

  284. as the promised seed,

  285. promised to Abraham.

  286. And if you believe in him from national Israel,

  287. this promise is for you.

  288. In Romans 1 16,

  289. Paul calls this the gospel,

  290. the power of God for salvation,

  291. for everyone who believes,

  292. for the Jew first,

  293. and also for the Greek.

  294. So God is true to his word.

  295. This new covenant is given to Israel first,

  296. and all who are appointed to eternal life in Israel

  297. will receive Christ as the fulfillment of this promise.

  298. It's much better than the old covenant.

  299. And it's not based on who your parents are.

  300. It's based on whether you receive Jesus Christ for yourself.

  301. So the terms of the new covenant are not according to those of the old.

  302. Third observation.

  303. You belong to the old covenant externally.

  304. If you're born in national Israel,

  305. your dad,

  306. being a male Israelite,

  307. would have received the sign of that covenant.

  308. He would have been circumcised.

  309. So you could belong to national Israel,

  310. being covenant with God,

  311. and have that sign of the covenant,

  312. the circumcision in the old covenant.

  313. But he says in the new covenant,

  314. you can't belong externally.

  315. You will belong to the new covenant

  316. only by what God does in your mind and in your heart.

  317. Look at verse 33.

  318. Thus says the Lord,

  319. I will put my law in their minds

  320. and write it on their hearts,

  321. and I will be their God,

  322. and they shall be my people.

  323. It's not an external sign any longer.

  324. The new covenant is put to the inner man.

  325. God writes it on your mind,

  326. puts it on your heart.

  327. Romans 2.25 says,

  328. If you are a breaker of the law,

  329. your circumcision has become uncircumcision.

  330. If you claim to be in God's covenant

  331. in the church,

  332. and you pretend like you're a believer,

  333. that you're saved,

  334. but you live a life of sin,

  335. of treason to God,

  336. just eating sour grapes,

  337. it doesn't matter who your parents were.

  338. It doesn't matter if you're a Jew.

  339. It doesn't matter if you're circumcised or not,

  340. because that's what the early church was trying to decide.

  341. How new is the new covenant?

  342. What matters is if you are united to Christ,

  343. because if you are united to Christ,

  344. you are a new creation.

  345. The old has gone away.

  346. If you are a breaker of the law,

  347. your circumcision has become uncircumcision.

  348. The external sign does not dictate

  349. whether you're truly in the covenant.

  350. If by God's grace,

  351. you were born to parents that God saved,

  352. you do have many blessings.

  353. If you're born into a household that loves the Lord

  354. and fears the Lord,

  355. if even one of your parents can say,

  356. I'm a saved sinner,

  357. you have so many blessings.

  358. These are the parents who will bring you to church.

  359. These are the parents who will forgive you

  360. as God forgave them.

  361. These are parents who will read God's word to you

  362. and pray for you

  363. and teach you to hide God's word in your heart

  364. that you may not sin against God.

  365. And through these parents,

  366. God can minister the saving gospel.

  367. But having Christian parents

  368. does not put you in covenant with God.

  369. There is no grace mediated through parents.

  370. Ultimately,

  371. Christ is the only mediator between God and man.

  372. So we have many blessings

  373. of being in a Christian household.

  374. No one can be born into the covenant of grace.

  375. You need to be transferred from Adam to Christ.

  376. You need to be taken as a slave under Satan and darkness

  377. and made a citizen under King Jesus and the new covenant.

  378. Martin Luther continued that practice

  379. of the Roman Catholic Church

  380. of baptizing infant children of believers.

  381. But his theology was correct

  382. that he called his children little heathens.

  383. This is not a sermon against children.

  384. We love children very much.

  385. We love them so much.

  386. We don't want to give them false assurance.

  387. We want to preach the full gospel.

  388. You need Christ.

  389. You and I were born as heathens.

  390. And just like being baptized in the Roman Empire

  391. didn't make you any less pagan

  392. or citizen of the Roman Empire,

  393. we don't want our children to have the idea

  394. that because my parents love God and fear him,

  395. I got a ticket.

  396. You stand on your own.

  397. You cannot belong to the covenant externally only.

  398. It must be a work God does in your heart

  399. and in your mind.

  400. Colossians 1.13

  401. All the little heathens as we're born

  402. need to be delivered from the power of darkness

  403. and transferred into the kingdom of the Son of God's love.

  404. When the New Testament talks to children in the church

  405. and saying,

  406. Children, obey your parents in the Lord.

  407. These are letters to the church.

  408. Yes, children are part of the gathered congregation.

  409. But if you're not in Christ for yourself,

  410. you receive that as the law.

  411. Children, obey your parents in the Lord.

  412. And you think,

  413. I didn't obey my mom just this morning.

  414. I'm a sinner.

  415. I need a savior.

  416. So it's a blessing that you can hear the law of God

  417. within the congregation.

  418. Just like we remind ourselves of God's moral law every week

  419. because it drives us back to the cross.

  420. The covenant of grace is made between God the Father

  421. and God the Son.

  422. And with all of God's elect in Christ

  423. as his seed.

  424. If you are in Christ,

  425. you are the seed of Christ.

  426. And if you are in Christ,

  427. you receive all the blessings that God gave

  428. to the church through Christ.

  429. But the only souls in the covenant of grace

  430. are those to whom

  431. the redemption that Christ purchased

  432. has applied by the Holy Spirit.

  433. You cannot be in the covenant of grace

  434. unless God the Holy Spirit

  435. applies redemption to you.

  436. because you belong to the old covenant externally,

  437. but to the new covenant,

  438. you can only belong

  439. by the work God does in your mind

  440. and in your heart.

  441. Fourth observation about the new covenant

  442. is that God mediated the old covenant

  443. by sinful men,

  444. but the new by God,

  445. the Son himself.

  446. The old covenant God mediated.

  447. He had someone stand in between God and man,

  448. which was Moses.

  449. In Deuteronomy,

  450. the people begged,

  451. please don't let God give us the law directly.

  452. It's terrifying.

  453. We will die

  454. if we have to hear the law from God directly.

  455. So God rose up Moses

  456. as a mediator

  457. to stand between God

  458. and the people

  459. to give them the law.

  460. But in the new covenant,

  461. there's no other mediator

  462. except Jesus Christ himself.

  463. Our sermon text was written

  464. to national Israel,

  465. Jeremiah 31.

  466. In the non-Jews

  467. in the church era,

  468. 1 Corinthians 10, 11,

  469. are told this,

  470. that the history of God

  471. redeeming Israel

  472. happened as an example for you.

  473. They were written for our admonition

  474. upon whom the ends of the ages has come.

  475. In 1 Corinthians 10,

  476. Paul's telling the church,

  477. when you read about what God did

  478. with national Israel,

  479. that is for you,

  480. for your good.

  481. God made promises

  482. and a covenant

  483. to national Israel.

  484. And God has kept his word

  485. and he will keep his word.

  486. But those promises

  487. are also for you

  488. to learn from,

  489. to admonish the church,

  490. which includes Gentiles.

  491. And so what is it

  492. that the church needs to learn

  493. about this promise

  494. in Jeremiah 31?

  495. Let's look at verse 34.

  496. In this new covenant,

  497. God says,

  498. No more shall every man

  499. teach his neighbor

  500. and every man his brother,

  501. saying,

  502. Know the Lord,

  503. for they all shall know me,

  504. from the least of them

  505. to the greatest,

  506. says the Lord.

  507. How can sinners know God?

  508. God says,

  509. For I will forgive

  510. their iniquity

  511. and their sin,

  512. I will remember no more.

  513. They shall all know me

  514. in the new covenant,

  515. from the least

  516. to the greatest.

  517. You don't need a priest.

  518. You don't need Moses.

  519. You don't need a pastor

  520. mediating God to you.

  521. In the new covenant,

  522. you will know God directly.

  523. Christ is the great high priest.

  524. He is the mediator.

  525. And you know God.

  526. You know God himself

  527. when you know Jesus Christ

  528. in the new covenant.

  529. Some of you might be thinking,

  530. What does this passage

  531. in Jeremiah 31

  532. have to do with me

  533. or with the church?

  534. How do you know

  535. this is referring

  536. to the new covenant

  537. that Jesus cut?

  538. And some of you

  539. maybe have

  540. Hebrews 8 memorized,

  541. but if you don't

  542. or if you want to see it

  543. with your own eyes,

  544. turn to Hebrews chapter 8.

    Hebrews 8 chapter mention

  545. You just need to know

  546. it's not a pastor

  547. up here trying to

  548. twist something

  549. from the Old Testament

  550. and make it be

  551. about the church.

  552. Well, Hebrews 8

  553. is most likely

  554. Timothy's sermon notes

  555. of the sermons

  556. preached by Paul.

  557. And in Hebrews 8,

  558. starting at verse 7,

  559. he writes,

  560. For if that first covenant

  561. had been faultless,

  562. then no place would have

  563. been sought for a second,

  564. because finding fault

  565. with them,

  566. he says.

  567. Put another way,

  568. the covenant God made

  569. through Moses

  570. and national Israel

  571. found fault

  572. in the people of God.

  573. it exposed their ability

  574. to keep God's law

  575. by their own flesh

  576. and by their own strength.

  577. So having exposed

  578. their need for a savior,

  579. he says,

  580. this is Hebrews 8,

    Hebrews 8:8

  581. verse 8,

  582. Behold,

  583. the days are coming,

  584. says the Lord,

  585. when I will make

  586. a new covenant.

  587. And if you notice,

  588. this entire passage

  589. all the way

  590. to the end of verse 12

  591. is word for word

  592. Jeremiah 31.

  593. The application

  594. of the new covenant

  595. to the church

  596. is given in Hebrews 8.

  597. All that the apostle

  598. has to say next

  599. is verse 13.

  600. In what he says,

  601. a new covenant

  602. he has made

  603. the first obsolete

  604. and what is becoming

  605. obsolete

  606. and growing old

  607. is ready

  608. to vanish away.

  609. With the finished

  610. work of Christ,

  611. there is no more

  612. mediator.

  613. Church received

  614. this promise

  615. of Jeremiah 31

  616. as fulfilled

  617. in Christ.

  618. And this new covenant

  619. that fulfills

  620. what God told Abraham,

  621. through you

  622. all the nations

  623. will be blessed.

  624. How can that be?

  625. Well,

  626. from the line

  627. of Abraham

  628. and David

  629. comes Jesus Christ

  630. and he is truly God,

  631. truly man,

  632. the mediator

  633. of the new covenant.

  634. Now the ceremonial law,

  635. the judicial law,

  636. they're obsolete.

  637. They've faded away.

  638. They have no more

  639. bearing on God's people

  640. to bring a curse

  641. on them,

  642. to expose

  643. how they are

  644. covenant breakers.

  645. No longer.

  646. Instead,

  647. Christ is the only

  648. mediator

  649. and this covenant

  650. is not a covenant

  651. of works,

  652. it's a covenant

  653. of grace.

  654. To be very specific,

  655. parents,

  656. you may not

  657. mediate

  658. the covenant

  659. of grace

  660. in Christ's place

  661. to your children.

  662. Some of you are saying,

  663. well,

  664. hold on,

  665. didn't Peter say

  666. in Acts 2,

  667. 39,

  668. this promise

  669. is for you

  670. and your children.

  671. Yes.

  672. In fact,

  673. let's turn there.

  674. Let's turn to

  675. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  676. If you can turn

  677. in your Bible

  678. to the New Testament

  679. after the Gospels,

  680. the book of Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  681. chapter 2,

  682. and let's read

  683. exactly what Peter

  684. says to the church

  685. about the promise.

  686. Acts 2,

    Acts 2:39

  687. verse 39.

  688. Verse 39.

  689. Peter preached,

  690. repent,

  691. and let every one

  692. of you

  693. be baptized

  694. in the name

  695. of Jesus Christ

  696. for the remission

  697. of sins,

  698. and you shall

  699. receive

  700. the gift

  701. of the Holy Spirit,

  702. for the promise

  703. is for you

  704. and to your children,

  705. to all who are

  706. afar off,

  707. as many

  708. as the Lord

  709. our God

  710. will call.

  711. So parents,

  712. you can preach

  713. the Gospel

  714. to your children,

  715. and you can

  716. encourage them.

  717. The promise

  718. of salvation

  719. is for you.

  720. It's for you

  721. who will receive

  722. the gracious

  723. offer of Christ

  724. to save you

  725. by His blood.

  726. And it's not

  727. only for you

  728. who are

  729. children of believers

  730. or who are

  731. ethnic Jews,

  732. it's also for those

  733. who are far off

  734. to the islands

  735. and the coastlands,

  736. as many

  737. as the Lord

  738. our God

  739. will call.

  740. That's who

  741. will receive.

  742. That's who

  743. will respond

  744. in repentance.

  745. And the church

  746. affirms that

  747. and praises the Lord

  748. and celebrates

  749. that with baptism.

  750. So the gracious

  751. promise of salvation

  752. in Christ

  753. is offered

  754. freely,

  755. genuinely

  756. to all.

  757. And it will

  758. be received

  759. by as many

  760. as the Lord

  761. our God

  762. will call

  763. by the application

  764. of that promise

  765. to their heart

  766. by the Holy Spirit.

  767. Matthew 27, 25

  768. is a connection

  769. I hadn't seen

  770. until this week.

  771. Peter is saying

  772. the promise

  773. is for you

  774. and your children.

  775. And think about

  776. who Peter's audience

  777. was.

  778. These were the same

  779. Jews,

  780. the great crowd

  781. that had cried

  782. crucify him.

  783. And Pilate said

  784. I wash my hand

  785. this man's innocent.

  786. And in Matthew

    Matthew 27:25

  787. 27, verse 25

  788. listen to what

  789. the Jewish crowd

  790. says.

  791. May his,

  792. Jesus' blood

  793. be on us

  794. and our children.

  795. They brought on

  796. a curse on themselves

  797. and their children.

  798. They're eating

  799. these sour grapes

  800. saying crucify him.

  801. And it's their children

  802. who they're cursing

  803. by rejecting

  804. the very son of God.

  805. And Peter stands

  806. and tells them

  807. no,

  808. this promise

  809. is for you

  810. and your children.

  811. Turn to the Savior

  812. Jesus Christ

  813. and be washed

  814. of your sin.

  815. Your children too

  816. can be blessed.

  817. And as many

  818. as are far off

  819. through you

  820. national Israel

  821. will all nations

  822. be blessed

  823. and all those

  824. that are regenerated

  825. or engrafted in

  826. they are the seed

  827. of Jesus Christ.

  828. who is in

  829. the new covenant?

  830. It's all those

  831. who receive

  832. the promise

  833. of grace

  834. through faith

  835. in Christ

  836. who repent

  837. of unbelief

  838. because the spirit

  839. regenerated them

  840. and they are united

  841. to Jesus.

  842. That's what's symbolized

  843. in baptism.

  844. You're forgiven

  845. of your sins.

  846. You've received

  847. the Holy Spirit.

  848. It's not based

  849. on whether

  850. you're in the land.

  851. It's also for you

  852. who are far off.

  853. It's not based

  854. on being born

  855. into a Christian home

  856. or being part

  857. of the church

  858. or being considered

  859. a citizen

  860. of the Roman Empire.

  861. That's not what

  862. makes you

  863. in the new covenant.

  864. It's as many

  865. as the Lord

  866. will call

  867. because no one

  868. can mediate

  869. the new covenant

  870. of grace

  871. except Christ

  872. himself.

  873. Well, the fifth

  874. observation is that

  875. man could break

  876. the old covenant

  877. but the promised

  878. seed himself

  879. secures the new.

  880. Man could break

  881. the old covenant.

  882. It says it right there

  883. in our sermon text.

  884. The covenant

  885. which you broke.

  886. But the promised

  887. seed himself

  888. is the one

  889. who secures

  890. the new covenant.

  891. Let's look at

  892. verse 35

  893. through 37.

  894. Thus says the Lord

  895. who gives the sun

  896. for a light

  897. by day

  898. the ordinances

  899. of the moon

  900. and the stars

  901. for a light

  902. by night

  903. who disturbs

  904. the sea

  905. and its waters

  906. roar.

  907. The Lord of hosts

  908. is his name.

  909. If those ordinances

  910. the sun

  911. the moon

  912. the tides

  913. if those ordinances

  914. were to depart

  915. from before me

  916. says the Lord

  917. in other words

  918. if God were no longer

  919. sovereign over all

  920. his creation

  921. then the seed of Israel

  922. shall also cease

  923. from being a nation

  924. before me.

  925. It's not going to happen.

  926. God will never

  927. stop being sovereign

  928. over his creation

  929. and never will

  930. the seed of Israel

  931. cease from being

  932. a nation

  933. before him.

  934. Thus says the Lord

  935. of heaven above

  936. if heaven above

  937. can be measured

  938. and the foundations

  939. of the earth

  940. searched out beneath

  941. only then

  942. would I cast off

  943. all the seed of Israel

  944. for all that they

  945. have done

  946. says the Lord.

  947. He's saying

  948. you want to know

  949. how much better

  950. the new covenant is

  951. how gracious

  952. how secure you are

  953. if you're in the new covenant

  954. no matter how bad

  955. national Israel

  956. has been

  957. this new covenant

  958. will be secured

  959. just as I secure

  960. the orderliness

  961. of my creation

  962. just as you can't

  963. measure the expanse

  964. or the depths

  965. of the ocean

  966. that's how unfathomable

  967. my covenant

  968. faithfulness

  969. is to you.

  970. He's saying

  971. I could cast off

  972. or throw away

  973. or break ties with

  974. and banish forever

  975. the Israelites

  976. of Jeremiah's generation

  977. for all the sins

  978. that they have committed

  979. against me.

  980. God has every right

  981. to do that.

  982. They are covenant breakers

  983. but God says

  984. I won't do that

  985. just like you can't

  986. understand

  987. how deep the earth is

  988. and how to measure

  989. the distance

  990. between an expanding

  991. galaxy

  992. so you can't

  993. understand

  994. my covenant

  995. faithfulness

  996. that I will

  997. I will be faithful

  998. to the seed

  999. of Israel.

  1000. Well now we need

  1001. to understand

  1002. who is this seed

  1003. to whom God

  1004. will be so faithful.

  1005. We have three options.

  1006. One it's the biological

  1007. seed of Abraham

  1008. through Isaac

  1009. and Jacob

  1010. ethnic Israelites

  1011. today.

1012. You can be a Christian

  1013. and believe this.

  1014. Second option

  1015. is that

  1016. this refers

  1017. to the Christians

  1018. now

  1019. and their children

  1020. today.

  1021. If you think

  1022. that the church

  1023. has replaced

  1024. national Israel

  1025. then it's the children

  1026. of believers

  1027. who are seeds

  1028. the seed promises

  1029. are fulfilled

  1030. ultimately in Christ

  1031. but also then

  1032. to biological children

  1033. or third

  1034. that Jesus Christ

  1035. is the capital

  1036. promised seed.

  1037. Let's let the Bible

  1038. interpret the Bible

  1039. for us

  1040. and would you please

  1041. turn to Galatians 3

  1042. New Testament

  1043. Galatians chapter 3

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

1044. who is the promised seed?

  1045. Galatians chapter 3

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  1046. and verse 16

  1047. Galatians 3

  1048. 16

  1049. Paul is writing

  1050. to the church

  1051. which was disputing

  1052. this very thing

  1053. should Gentiles

  1054. be circumcised

  1055. because that's the sign

  1056. of the old covenant?

  1057. who are God's promises

  1058. for?

  1059. By the inspiration

  1060. of the Spirit

  1061. Paul writes

  1062. now to Abraham

  1063. and his seed

  1064. where the promise

  1065. is made

  1066. he does not say

  1067. and to seeds

  1068. as of many

  1069. but as of one

  1070. and to your seed

  1071. here it is

  1072. underline this

  1073. if you haven't already

  1074. your seed

  1075. who is Christ

  1076. in this Abrahamic covenant

  1077. God is promising

  1078. blessings

  1079. to Christ

  1080. and through Christ

1081. to all of Christ's seed

  1082. man could break

  1083. the old covenant

  1084. but this promise

  1085. seed

  1086. Jesus Christ

  1087. he himself

  1088. secures

  1089. the new covenant

  1090. well for today

  1091. the last thing

  1092. I want to

  1093. encourage you with

  1094. is this

  1095. you are secure

1096. if you are in Christ

  1097. in the new covenant

  1098. how secure?

  1099. how secure are you

1100. if you are in Christ's

  1101. new covenant?

  1102. I just have four

  1103. for today

  1104. in the new covenant

  1105. Christ himself

  1106. holds you

  1107. secure

  1108. because Jesus Christ

  1109. undid

  1110. the curse

  1111. of Adam

  1112. Romans 5 17

  1113. since by one man

  1114. Adam's offense

  1115. death reigned

  1116. over all

  1117. much more

  1118. you who receive

  1119. abundance of grace

  1120. and of the gift

  1121. of righteousness

  1122. have life

  1123. through the one

  1124. Jesus Christ

  1125. because Jesus Christ

  1126. undid

  1127. the curse

  1128. of Adam

  1129. for all those

  1130. who are in his

  1131. covenant of grace

  1132. how secure are you

  1133. in his new covenant?

  1134. well Christ

  1135. holds you fast

  1136. because he signed

  1137. your adoption papers

  1138. with his blood

  1139. John 1 12

  1140. says as many

  1141. as received

  1142. Jesus Christ

  1143. to them

  1144. he gave the right

  1145. to be children

  1146. of God

  1147. to those who believe

  1148. in his name

  1149. 1 John 3 1

  1150. behold

  1151. what manner

  1152. of love is this

  1153. the father

  1154. has bestowed

  1155. on us

  1156. that we should

  1157. be called

  1158. children of God

  1159. the seed promises

  1160. fulfilled in Christ

  1161. extend

  1162. to all those

  1163. who believe

  1164. in Christ

  1165. first through Israel

  1166. then for the nations

  1167. how secure are you

  1168. in Christ's new covenant?

  1169. Christ holds you fast

  1170. in his covenant

  1171. of grace

  1172. because the Holy Spirit

  1173. of God

  1174. lives inside of you

  1175. who believe

  1176. Romans 8 15

  1177. you have received

  1178. the spirit

  1179. of adoption

1180. by whom we cry out

  1181. Abba Father

  1182. the spirit

  1183. himself

  1184. bears witness

  1185. with our spirit

  1186. that we are

  1187. children of God

  1188. and if children

  1189. then heirs

  1190. heirs of God

  1191. and joint

  1192. heirs

  1193. with Christ

  1194. how secure

  1195. are you

  1196. in Christ's new covenant?

  1197. God promised

  1198. in Jeremiah 31

    Jeremiah 31:35

  1199. verses 35

  1200. and 36

  1201. as stable

  1202. as I have made

1203. the course of the sun

  1204. the cycle

  1205. of the moon

  1206. the placement

  1207. of the stars

  1208. the movement

  1209. of the waters

  1210. of the oceans

  1211. so stable

  1212. is my promise

  1213. to you

1214. just as I show you

  1215. my sovereignty

  1216. over all creation

  1217. so I will sovereignly

  1218. keep you

  1219. by my power

  1220. in my covenant

  1221. of grace

  1222. through Jesus Christ

  1223. you shall never

  1224. depart from me

  1225. says the Lord

  1226. my promised seed

  1227. God the son

  1228. who took on flesh

  1229. to be your mediator

  1230. Jesus Christ

  1231. has secured you

  1232. for himself

  1233. you belong to him

  1234. and if you belong

  1235. to Christ

  1236. you shall never

  1237. cease

  1238. from being

  1239. his people

  1240. you are the people

  1241. of God

  1242. before you

  1243. in Christ

  1244. God has a kingdom

  1245. a nation

  1246. and you are firm

  1247. secure

  1248. in his hand

  1249. he says

  1250. just as heaven

  1251. cannot be measured

  1252. nor the foundations

  1253. of the earth

  1254. searched out beneath

  1255. so you

  1256. Christian

  1257. can trust

  1258. that God

  1259. will never

  1260. cast off any

  1261. who are his children

  1262. through Jesus Christ

  1263. that's how secure

  1264. you are

  1265. in the new covenant

1266. well for many of you

1267. I hope this is comforting

  1268. you are not

  1269. in a covenant

  1270. of works

  1271. you are not

  1272. that orphaned

  1273. foster child

  1274. that needs to fear

  1275. being kicked out

  1276. of the home

  1277. or having to grab

  1278. all your belongings

  1279. and run

  1280. one more time

  1281. you're in a covenant

  1282. of grace

  1283. the principle

  1284. is different

  1285. it's not based

  1286. on your works

  1287. or the works

  1288. of your family

  1289. you are secured

  1290. by Jesus Christ

  1291. himself

  1292. he came under

  1293. the law

  1294. his own law

  1295. and he fulfilled

  1296. all of it

  1297. on your behalf

  1298. so that you could

  1299. be a co-heir

  1300. with him

  1301. in his father's home

  1302. you are secure

  1303. in Jesus Christ

  1304. praise him

  1305. for his new covenant

  1306. of grace

  1307. and every time

  1308. we come to the

  1309. Lord's Supper

  1310. you remember

  1311. your adoption papers

  1312. are signed

  1313. with his own blood

  1314. let's spend some time

  1315. praying

  1316. in response

  1317. to the gospel

  1318. you've heard today

  1319. good

  1320. thank you

  1321. my God

  1322. let's have a

  1323. approximately

  1324. stop

  1325. pom

  1326. amazing
