  1. we believe God's word is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

  2. It's inerrant.

  3. Man is not more wise than God's word.

  4. We don't find mistakes in it.

  5. It's infallible.

  6. The word of God accomplishes what he intends for it every time.

  7. And we believe that it's clear that with the Holy Spirit dwelling in every believer,

  8. as we hear God's word, we'll understand what he means.

  9. And that's my prayer as I read this to you.

  10. And to give you some context, the book of Philippians is a letter.

  11. You'll find out a little bit more about the author in the audience.

  12. But the city is in Philippi.

  13. Philippi is an ancient city.

  14. Even before it was part of the Roman Empire, it was refounded by Philip II.

  15. You actually know Philip II.

  16. He's Alexander the Great's dad, the king of Macedon.

  17. And the location of Philippi is between Europe and Asia.

  18. So it's in northeastern part of Greece.

  19. As the Romans expanded their kingdom, Philippi became a very strategic trade city

  20. to connect the trade from Asia with Europe.

  21. And so the Roman Empire invested much in this little city of Philippi.

  22. They built a theater, a temple with terraces, a great forum, and a basilica.

  23. All of these Roman pieces of architecture.

  24. And for that reason, it was called Little Rome, a very influential city.

  25. So our sermon text is verses 1 through 5.

  26. Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ,

  27. to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi,

  28. with the bishops and deacons.

  29. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  30. I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

  31. always in every prayer of mine,

  32. making request for you all with joy,

  33. for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now.

  34. This is the word of the Lord.

  35. Thanks be to God.

  36. You may be seated.

  37. Thank you.

  38. Father, I ask once again that you will please speak through your word.

  39. May your truth prevail over unbelief.

  40. And may you renew our minds.

  41. We pray that your Holy Spirit,

  42. the Spirit of Jesus Christ himself,

  43. the Good Shepherd,

  44. will speak to his people.

  45. We pray that you'll accomplish your purposes

  46. with your law and gospel as it's proclaimed.

  47. I pray that you'll guard my lips,

  48. that everything I say would be pleasing in your sight with your help.

  49. I also pray that you will guard the ears of your people.

  50. Help anything, Lord, that I say that is falling short of your glory

  51. and your standard to be rejected by their minds.

  52. We pray, Lord, that as we receive your word,

  53. that you will work into us your good pleasure,

  54. that you will truly shape your church.

  55. For your glory we ask.

  56. Amen.

  57. Amen.

  58. There in the living room of a wealthy businesswoman

  59. sits a girl that everyone thought was crazy.

  60. Also in this living room is the porter of the city's jailhouse,

  61. along with his family and servants.

  62. One of the men, with gray in his beard,

  63. opens up the parchment that arrived on a ship that week.

  64. He reads the first line and then pauses.

  65. Paul and Timothy, bond servants of Jesus Christ.

  66. The memories of everyone present fly back to the year

  67. they first saw that small group of travelers,

  68. two of whom they could still picture with blood on their backs.

  69. A dozen eyes in this living room puddle up.

  70. The reader is one of them and he swallows hard

  71. and then continues to all the saints in Christ Jesus

  72. who are in Philippi.

  73. Beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  74. I want to encourage you today

  75. with this example of a small church in Philippi,

  76. how God himself shapes his church.

  77. How God himself shapes his church.

  78. First, God makes desperate sinners

  79. into orderly saints.

  80. God makes desperate sinners

  81. into orderly saints.

  82. Verse 1, Paul and Timothy, slaves of Jesus.

  83. That's how Paul introduces himself

  84. as author of this letter to this congregation.

  85. To appreciate how drastic this is,

  86. you need to hear an example from this same time period.

  87. Here's how another letter began,

  88. an official letter to a people

  89. in a city called Alexandria.

  90. Tiberius, Claudius, Caesar, Augustus, Germanicus,

  91. Imperator, Pontifex Maximus,

  92. holder of the tribunition power,

  93. consul designate to the city of the Alexandrians.

  94. Well, here Paul calls himself simply a slave,

  95. a bondservant of Jesus Christ.

  96. In other epistles, he states,

  97. I am an apostle.

  98. I have this authority.

  99. In this letter, he doesn't need to,

  100. most likely because the sweet congregation in Philippi,

  101. they know this.

  102. They love Paul.

  103. They accept his authority.

  104. That's not what they need to hear.

  105. Paul introduces himself along with Timothy.

  106. Timothy, we're told in Acts 16,

  107. was a young believer, verse 2,

  108. who was well spoken of by the brethren,

  109. traveling along with Paul in this small company.

  110. Paul, Silas, young Timothy,

  111. most likely to be discipled and an assistant to learn.

  112. And then in Acts, we read it in the first person plural.

  113. So Luke is most likely there as well

  114. as an accompanying doctor.

  115. So we learn even from this simple introduction,

  116. Paul and Timothy, slaves of Jesus,

  117. that ministry is shared.

  118. Ministry is shared by those who consider Jesus their Lord.

  119. He introduces themselves with the word slave

  120. or bondservant.

  121. The Greek, it's douloim.

  122. It's one who gives himself up for another's will,

  123. devoted to another,

  124. to the disregard of their own interests.

  125. That's what a bondservant is.

  126. Jesus used this word in Matthew 20, 27.

  127. He said,

  128. Whosoever will be chief among you,

  129. let him be your slave, your servant.

  130. Jesus Christ himself took the posture of a slave

  131. when he washed his disciples' feet.

  132. So what a wonderful thing now to claim as your title.

  133. You are one who is now a slave of Christ.

  134. One who Christ will use to advance his kingdom

  135. in the souls and the lives of believers.

  136. Paul and Timothy, slaves of Jesus Christ.

  137. I mentioned that these saints,

  138. he says to all the saints,

  139. there's an orderliness in how he views the church.

  140. All the saints, the word saint,

  141. it means consecrated, set apart, devoted.

  142. In the Old Testament,

  143. what was consecrated or set apart

  144. were the instruments used in the ceremonial law.

  145. These were common utensils,

  146. but they were consecrated, set apart,

  147. not to be used for lesser purposes.

  148. These belong to the ministry of the Lord.

  149. And he says,

  150. Now you are all the people of God who are set apart.

  151. You are the vessels God will use

  152. for his special consecrated purposes.

  153. You're a consecrated body.

  154. And with you are the officers.

  155. From among you are elders and deacons.

  156. The word here is bishop or overseer.

  157. For us, it's a synonymous,

  158. well, it's the same office

  159. described in several different terms.

  160. Under shepherds of Christ,

  161. pastors, overseers, elders.

  162. That's one office.

  163. And the other office is deacons.

  164. Servants who are with the congregation,

  165. but also set apart to hold a special office.

  166. Well, who is it that's included

  167. in this description of all the saints?

  168. All the saints,

  169. they're gathered in this church.

  170. One of these saints,

  171. we read in Acts 16, verse 16.

    Acts 16:16

  172. If you still have your marker there,

  173. you want to follow along.

  174. Acts 16, verse 16.

    Acts 16:16

  175. In the same city of Philippi,

  176. Paul's second missionary journey,

  177. the first time that he would meet

  178. these beloved believers.

  179. We read this description,

  180. starting in Acts, verse 16.

  181. A certain slave girl,

  182. possessed with a spirit of divination.

  183. This means that this young girl

  184. was a slave to human masters.

  185. They possessed her.

  186. They owned her.

  187. And she had to work for them as a slave.

  188. But on top of that,

  189. she had a double bondage.

  190. She was possessed by a spirit of divination

  191. or a demon from the fallen angel,

  192. from the depths of hell,

  193. possessing her body

  194. and manipulating the truth

  195. and the words in such a way

  196. that people were willing

  197. to pay her master's money

  198. for the words that she would say

  199. about their future

  200. as if she could foresee the future.

  201. Well, this slave girl met them.

  202. And she brought her masters much profit

  203. by fortune telling,

  204. we read in verse 16.

  205. In verse 17, we read that

  206. this girl followed Paul and us,

  207. wrote Luke,

  208. and she cried out, saying,

  209. these men are the servants

  210. of the Most High God

  211. who proclaim to us

  212. the way of salvation.

  213. Verse 18,

  214. for many days she continued to do this.

  215. Verse 19, we read that

  216. Paul became greatly annoyed

  217. and he turned and said to the demon

  218. that was possessing the slave girl,

  219. I command you in the name of Jesus Christ

  220. to come out of her.

  221. This was a desperate sinner.

  222. This young slave girl

  223. knew that these men

  224. are speaking a message of salvation.

  225. The demons speaking through this little girl,

  226. they revealed the reality,

  227. the spiritual way

  228. that the kingdom of God

  229. is going to advance

  230. into the city of Philippi.

  231. And it's a way of salvation

  232. as a demonstration of God's power

  233. in his advancing kingdom.

  234. This girl herself

  235. experienced such salvation.

  236. She was delivered

  237. from that bondage

  238. of this evil spirit.

  239. And Paul says,

  240. no matter what your background was,

  241. no matter what you were a slave to,

  242. in Christ,

  243. you are a saint.

  244. Do you see how God makes

  245. desperate sinners

  246. into orderly saints

  247. within his church?

  248. The encouragement for us

  249. is that

  250. every church

  251. can be well-ordered

  252. in this way.

  253. We're well-ordered

  254. as we remember

  255. and we remind ourselves,

  256. I'm first of all

  257. a slave to Christ.

  258. That's who I am.

  259. I don't need to hold on

  260. to anything else

  261. in my identity.

  262. I'm a slave to Jesus Christ

  263. because he became

  264. a servant

  265. to save me.

  266. And as a church

  267. of those who God

  268. has saved

  269. from our desperate sin

  270. and the bondage

  271. that he's brought

  272. each one of us out of,

  273. as we gather

  274. in his name,

  275. he guides his church

  276. to raise up

  277. and set apart

  278. church officers

  279. through whom

  280. he will minister

  281. and serve

  282. his body.

  283. God makes

  284. desperate sinners

  285. into orderly

  286. saints.

  287. How else does

  288. God shape his church?

  289. Number two,

  290. God makes Christians

  291. remember

  292. the basis

  293. of their blessing.

  294. God makes Christians

  295. remember the basis

  296. of their blessing.

  297. Look at verse two.

  298. His greeting is

  299. grace to you

  300. and peace

  301. from God our Father

  302. and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  303. Grace to you

  304. and peace.

  305. In the example

  306. I read a moment ago,

  307. Tiberius Claudius,

  308. Caesar Augustus,

  309. the next words

  310. in this historic document

  311. are this,

  312. to the city

  313. of the Alexandrians,

  314. greetings.

  315. And the word

  316. he uses for greetings

  317. is in Greek.

  318. The word is

  319. kareem.

  320. Kareem is a general

  321. salutation,

  322. just means greetings.

  323. Well,

  324. Paul does a play

  325. on words.

  326. He uses the word

  327. grace.

  328. Instead of greetings,

  329. he says

  330. karees.

  331. So it sounds

  332. very similar

  333. to this common

  334. Greek greeting,

  335. but he instead

  336. uses the specific

  337. theological doctrine,

  338. grace.

  339. grace and peace.

  340. Grace is God's

  341. favor

  342. to those

  343. who are ill-deserving.

  344. We deserve ill.

  345. We deserve

  346. wrath of God

  347. for our sin,

  348. but instead

  349. we get God's

  350. wonderful favor.

  351. That's what grace is.

  352. It's only through

  353. Jesus Christ

  354. because he took

  355. the ill we deserve

  356. in our place

  357. and he accomplished

  358. for us

  359. the blessings

  360. that we could never

  361. merit

  362. for ourselves.

  363. That's the meeting

  364. point for all

  365. true Christians.

  366. Grace to you,

  367. church.

  368. And anyone who

  369. knows of God's

  370. grace meets

  371. Paul right there.

  372. You don't need

  373. to say anything

  374. else.

  375. We're on the

  376. same footing.

  377. Why did Paul

  378. know grace?

  379. Well,

  380. remember,

  381. Paul had hunted

  382. down Christians

  383. himself.

  384. He had been

  385. the one going

  386. into peaceful

  387. worship gatherings

  388. maybe like this.

  389. dragging Christians

  390. out in chains,

  391. casting them

  392. into the prisons,

  393. hauling them away

  394. to Jerusalem

  395. to be punished.

  396. Could you imagine

  397. what that would be

  398. like?

  399. I'll ask you

  400. children,

  401. what if someone

  402. were to come

  403. through those doors

  404. and command the

  405. soldiers to arrest

  406. your mom,

  407. your dad,

  408. your grandpa,

  409. your grandma?

  410. Put them in chains

  411. and you see them

  412. drug away.

  413. Well,

  414. Paul was the one

  415. standing there

  416. ordering the

  417. soldiers to do

  418. just that.

  419. Paul said

  420. this himself

  421. to the church

  422. in Acts 22.4.

  423. He said,

  424. I persecuted

  425. this way,

  426. referring to

  427. followers of Christ.

  428. I persecuted

  429. them to the death,

  430. binding and

  431. delivering them

  432. into prisons,

  433. both men and

  434. women,

  435. bringing them

  436. in chains

  437. to Jerusalem

  438. to be punished.

  439. In 1 Timothy 1.15,

  440. he says,

  441. but Jesus Christ

  442. came into the world

  443. to save sinners

  444. of whom I am

  445. the chief.

  446. Paul knew grace.

  447. Romans 5.20,

  448. where sin abounded

  449. and Paul's sin

  450. abounded so.

  451. He wrote,

  452. their grace

  453. abounded much more.

  454. So when Paul

  455. greets the church

  456. with grace,

  457. he does it as one

  458. who knows

  459. God's grace himself.

  460. He says,

  461. grace to you

  462. and peace.

  463. Well,

  464. if grace is

  465. a reference

  466. to the Greek greeting,

  467. common greeting

  468. among the Greeks,

  469. he pulls in

  470. Greek and Jew

  471. together.

  472. The Jews greet

  473. one another

  474. with shalom.

  475. Shalom.

  476. Holistic,

  477. relational rest.

  478. That's what shalom

  479. means.

  480. It means you enjoy

  481. a settled

  482. communion together.

  483. You are at home.

  484. You are comfortable.

  485. And he says,

  486. this is only possible

  487. from God

  488. through Jesus Christ.

  489. Isn't that true

  490. for our fellowship?

  491. As part of the

  492. membership process,

  493. one of the questions

  494. is describe some

  495. of the best experiences

  496. you've had in church.

  497. And many have shared

  498. it's been among

  499. brothers and sisters

  500. who know God's grace,

  501. who know this peace.

  502. And it's a time

  503. of wonderful rest

  504. where it truly feels

  505. like I'm with family.

  506. And God ministers

  507. to me over and over

  508. through that.

  509. We've also been

  510. in different relationships,

  511. maybe at work

  512. or even with relatives

  513. or sadly in the church

  514. as well,

  515. where there's no peace.

  516. And it's one of the

  517. hardest things we can

  518. go through as Christians,

  519. isn't it?

  520. To have no peace.

  521. I believe this principle

  522. is true that

  523. where there is no grace,

  524. there can be

  525. no peace.

  526. The solution,

  527. if you want more peace

  528. in those relationships,

  529. is God's grace

  530. at a heart level.

  531. The more church

  532. that we understand

  533. God's grace,

  534. the more peaceful

  535. will be our fellowship.

  536. Amen?

  537. See how preaching

  538. the gospel

  539. and gospeling one another

  540. through the hardest

  541. things we go through,

  542. that is how God

  543. shapes us together.

  544. It's the most practical

  545. thing we can do

  546. is to remind ourselves

  547. of God's grace

  548. toward us.

  549. God is to remind us

  550. of God's grace

  551. toward us.

  552. So,

  553. God makes Christians

  554. remember

  555. the basis

  556. of their blessing.

  557. Number three,

  558. God makes Christians

  559. remember one another

  560. with thankfulness.

  561. God makes Christians

  562. remember one another

  563. with thankfulness.

  564. That's how he shapes us

  565. as well.

  566. Verse three,

  567. we read,

  568. I thank my God

  569. upon every remembrance

  570. of you.

  571. Upon every remembrance

  572. of you,

  573. I thank my God.

  574. every remembrance

  575. of this church

  576. at Philippi.

  577. Look in Acts 16

  578. once again,

  579. you still have your marker there.

  580. Starting at verse 13,

  581. let's go back

  582. and put ourselves

  583. in Paul's shoes.

  584. What would have been

  585. these early remembrances

  586. of the church

  587. at Philippi?

  588. Acts 16,

    Acts 16:13

  589. verse 13.

  590. We read that it was

  591. the Sabbath day.

  592. There's Paul and Silas

  593. and Timothy and Luke.

  594. They went out of the city

  595. to the riverside.

  596. where prayer

  597. was customarily made.

  598. He says,

  599. they sat down

  600. and they began to speak.

  601. It's through the preaching,

  602. through the spoken word

  603. of God

  604. that God carries

  605. the gospel

  606. into the ears,

  607. the minds,

  608. and the hearts

  609. of believers.

  610. They preached

  611. and as he preached

  612. the word,

  613. he gave the gift

  614. of faith

  615. to Lydia.

  616. He remembers that.

  617. He said,

  618. a certain woman

  619. named Lydia

  620. heard us

  621. and she was

  622. a seller

  623. of purple

  624. who worshipped

  625. the Lord.

  626. Now look at the next

  627. words there

  628. in verse 14.

  629. The Lord

  630. opened her heart

  631. to heed

  632. the things

  633. spoken by Paul.

  634. They had to do

  635. their part.

  636. They're going

  637. into the open air.

  638. They're ministering

  639. the word of God

  640. for whoever has

  641. an ear to hear.

  642. But it's the Lord

  643. who opens

  644. the heart

  645. and causes you

  646. to pay attention

  647. and hear

  648. and receive

  649. the gospel.

  650. We read in verse 15

  651. that she

  652. and her household

  653. were baptized

  654. and then she

  655. hosted them.

  656. Well,

  657. after Paul

  658. commanded the demon

  659. to leave

  660. that little slave

  661. girl alone,

  662. he and Silas

  663. were accused

  664. of disturbing

  665. the peace.

  666. We read in Acts

  667. 16, 20

  668. that the whole city

  669. became exceedingly

  670. troubled

  671. because her masters

  672. saw that their hope

  673. of profit

  674. was now gone.

  675. So they seized

  676. Paul and Silas

  677. and they dragged

  678. them into the marketplace

  679. and to the authorities.

  680. We read in Acts

  681. 16, 22

  682. Then the multitude

  683. rose up together

  684. against them.

  685. The whole city

  686. of Philippi

  687. greatly disturbed

  688. against Paul

  689. and Silas

  690. who were the preachers.

  691. The magistrates

  692. tore off their clothes

  693. and commanded them

  694. to be beaten

  695. with rods

  696. and they laid

  697. many stripes

  698. on them.

  699. That means

  700. they whipped them

  701. so the skin

  702. is torn away

  703. of their backs.

  704. And yet,

  705. Paul writes

  706. in verse 3

  707. of our sermon text,

  708. I thank my God

  709. upon every

  710. remembrance

  711. of you.

  712. Paul thanks God

  713. for the memory

  714. of the church

  715. at Philippi.

  716. He thanks God

  717. for causing Lydia

  718. and her household

  719. to believe

  720. for saving

  721. that slave girl

  722. and for bringing

  723. these most unlikely

  724. believers together

  725. and planting them

  726. as a church.

  727. Does the Lord

  728. ever do this

  729. for you?

  730. Does he bring

  731. to mind

  732. the remembrance

  733. of other believers?

  734. When he does that,

  735. we should thank the Lord

  736. for these memories.

  737. Thank you, Lord,

  738. for reminding me

  739. of that conversation

  740. I had with this brother.

  741. Thank you, Lord,

  742. for this wonderful memory

  743. of that hard time

  744. that this family was in,

  745. but you were faithful

  746. to them.

  747. When the Lord

  748. brings one another

  749. to mind,

  750. we pray for one another

  751. and we thank the Lord

  752. for his grace

  753. on all of us

  754. because God

  755. makes Christians

  756. remember one another

  757. with thankfulness.

  758. In business

  759. and in other dealings,

  760. it's mostly hard memories

  761. and you're constantly

  762. on the defensive,

  763. but our thoughts

  764. of one another

  765. should be grace

  766. and peace

  767. and thank you, Lord,

  768. for this body

  769. you've given.

  770. Number four,

  771. God makes the afflicted

  772. pray with joy.

  773. How does God

  774. shape his church?

  775. He makes the afflicted

  776. pray with joy.

  777. Look at verse four.

  778. Paul writes,

  779. always in every prayer

  780. of mine,

  781. making requests

  782. for you all

  783. with joy.

  784. You notice how urgent

  785. Paul's language is?

  786. It's personal.

  787. It's persistent.

  788. He says,

  789. in every remembrance

  790. of you,

  791. always,

  792. in every prayer

  793. of mine for you,

  794. making requests

  795. for you all.

  796. You see,

  797. each one in the church

  798. is on Paul's mind

  799. and on his heart.

  800. Each one is precious

  801. in God's sight

  802. and he puts the names

  803. of these precious souls

  804. forward before God

  805. and he asks God,

  806. he makes requests

  807. of God

  808. on their behalf.

  809. He prays.

  810. Does the Lord

  811. bring fellow believers

  812. to your mind?

  813. Does he stir you up

  814. to specifically name

  815. those he wants you

  816. to intercede for?

  817. The beautiful thing

  818. is this,

  819. the Lord Jesus

  820. is interceding

  821. on our behalf

  822. right now

  823. and his spirit

  824. causes you to know

  825. what you're supposed

  826. to join your prayers to.

  827. He's already praying.

  828. When he stirs your heart

  829. and puts other believers

  830. in your mind,

  831. he has the name

  832. of that believer

  833. in his mind.

  834. So you're joining

  835. your prayers

  836. to those of Christ.

  837. He's inviting you

  838. to participate

  839. in his ministry.

  840. What a blessing.

  841. Well,

  842. let's try to figure out

  843. now from scripture,

  844. where is Paul

  845. as he's praying

  846. for all the saints

  847. in Philippi

  848. with joy?

  849. Where is he?

  850. There's this little church

  851. far away

  852. and Paul's praying

  853. with so much fervency.

  854. We know that

  855. he is in house arrest

  856. in Rome

  857. being watched

  858. by the Praetorian Guard.

  859. Who's the Praetorian Guard?

  860. It's an elite unit

  861. of the Imperial Roman Army

  862. that served

  863. as personal bodyguards

  864. and intelligence agents

  865. for the emperor himself.

  866. Paul is a big deal

  867. and he's being watched

  868. in Rome

  869. by the elite

  870. Praetorian Guard.

  871. If I could give you

  872. a comparison,

  873. this would be

  874. the best of the FBI,

  875. the intelligence agents,

  876. who are keeping tabs

  877. on every potential threat

  878. within the empire,

  879. mixed with army rangers,

  880. the toughest of the tough.

  881. That's who's keeping watch

  882. on Paul.

  883. Well, now we have to ask,

  884. how did Paul get there

  885. to be writing

  886. this prison epistle?

  887. We know that he spent

  888. two years

  889. approximately

  890. in jail

  891. in Caesarea,

  892. another city,

  893. without a trial.

  894. And we know that

  895. when he arrived at Rome,

  896. he was greeted

  897. as if he were a celebrity.

  898. Picture someone

  899. really famous

  900. arriving at the

  901. Denver International Airport

  902. and the church

  903. wanting to go out there

  904. and greet them

  905. with signs and cheering

  906. and welcome them.

  907. That's how the church

  908. in Rome greeted Paul

  909. initially.

  910. However,

  911. we learn that Paul

  912. was then envied,

  913. most likely by the elders

  914. of this church in Rome.

  915. Look in Philippians chapter 1.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  916. Now look at verse 15.

  917. He warns them

  918. from this seat

  919. that he's in now

  920. that some preach Christ

  921. out of envy

  922. and rivalry.

  923. We can fill in the blanks

  924. with some historical,

  925. you know,

  926. guessing,

  927. I guess we can call it.

  928. What happened was this.

  929. As Paul arrived in Rome,

  930. and this is the church

  931. to which maybe

  932. the most theological letter,

  933. the letter to the Romans,

  934. is written.

  935. They didn't continue

  936. eagerly submitting

  937. to his teaching.

  938. When Paul got arrested,

  939. he was considered

  940. an embarrassment.

  941. They were interested

  942. in their own glory.

  943. They saw Paul

  944. as a rival

  945. to their own fame,

  946. to their own flesh.

  947. And Paul says

  948. in Romans 1.16,

  949. I am not ashamed

  950. of the gospel.

  951. That's his state of mind,

  952. thinking of the church

  953. in Rome.

  954. This was new to me

  955. as I studied for today.

  956. Paul had become

  957. so neglected in Rome

  958. from that celebrity status.

  959. While he was under

  960. house arrest,

  961. another believer

  962. came to travel

  963. and he had to search

  964. to even find Paul.

  965. In other words,

  966. you go to the churches,

  967. that's where you would expect

  968. they'll know exactly

  969. where Paul is.

  970. They didn't know

  971. where Paul had been.

  972. That's how badly

  973. they neglected him.

  974. In 2 Timothy 1.16,

  975. Paul wrote,

  976. Onesiphorus

  977. often refreshed me

  978. in prison

  979. and was not ashamed

  980. of my chain.

  981. But when he arrived

  982. in Rome,

  983. he sought me out

  984. very zealously

  985. and found me.

  986. He had to go find him,

  987. go on a hunt

  988. to see where he is

  989. even Paul being kept.

  990. You see,

  991. the church

  992. had a very clear command

  993. from Jesus

  994. to minister to one another

  995. when you get arrested.

  996. It's going to happen, church.

  997. Jesus said in Matthew 25.43,

  998. It's as if I were naked,

  999. Jesus says,

1000. and you did not clothe me

1001. to neglect a brother in prison.

  1002. It's as if I, Jesus,

1003. was sick and in prison

1004. and you did not visit me.

  1005. That's how neglected

  1006. Paul had become

1007. by the church in Rome.

1008. So that's where he was.

1009. And from this house arrest,

  1010. from these chains,

  1011. Paul says,

  1012. I make requests

  1013. to God for you

1014. in every prayer of mine,

  1015. church,

  1016. with joy.

  1017. I make requests

  1018. for you with joy.

  1019. How?

  1020. How can that be?

  1021. James Montgomery Boyce

1022. help point this out to me.

  1023. The human mind

  1024. can really only concentrate

1025. on one thing at a time.

1026. And in the first chapter

  1027. of Philippians,

  1028. the name,

  1029. Jesus Christ,

  1030. is mentioned 18 times

  1031. in 30 verses.

1032. More than every other verse

  1033. is Jesus Christ.

1034. How can Paul make requests

  1035. for the church

  1036. in joy

  1037. from Rome

1038. where he had been abandoned,

  1039. neglected?

  1040. It's because his mind

  1041. is full

  1042. of Jesus Christ.

  1043. That's what he wants

  1044. to tell them about.

  1045. You see how God

  1046. is so gracious

  1047. to shape his church,

  1048. to make those

  1049. who are afflicted

  1050. pray with joy.

  1051. God uses

  1052. your affliction

  1053. and Paul's affliction

  1054. and my affliction

  1055. to make us

  1056. meditate

  1057. more

  1058. on Jesus Christ.

  1059. Doesn't he do that?

  1060. And as you meditate

  1061. on Jesus Christ,

  1062. he fills your mind

  1063. with joy.

1064. And full of the joy,

  1065. thinking of Jesus,

  1066. you pray.

  1067. Full of his joy

  1068. in you.

  1069. Well, the fifth way,

  1070. final one for today,

  1071. that I see God

  1072. shaping his church

  1073. is that he makes

  1074. all of his people

  1075. partners

  1076. in his mission.

  1077. God makes

  1078. all of his people

  1079. partners

  1080. in his mission.

  1081. Verse 5,

  1082. Philippians 1.5,

  1083. I thank my God

  1084. with joy

  1085. for your fellowship

  1086. in the gospel

  1087. from the first day

  1088. until now.

  1089. Your fellowship

  1090. in the gospel.

  1091. fellowship

  1092. is your

  1093. joint participation

  1094. in the gospel.

  1095. Your fellowship

  1096. is your communion

  1097. that you share

  1098. in Christ's salvation.

1099. It's from the first day,

  1100. that very first day,

  1101. Acts 16.25,

  1102. when Paul and Silas

  1103. were praying

  1104. and singing

  1105. hymns to God

  1106. and the other prisoners

  1107. were listening

  1108. to them.

  1109. They're declaring

  1110. Jesus Christ.

  1111. this is the fellowship

  1112. we share.

  1113. Even when our feet

  1114. are in stocks,

  1115. we can't stand up

  1116. and our backs

  1117. are bleeding

  1118. and opened.

  1119. We pray with joy

  1120. because we have

  1121. a communion,

  1122. a shared participation

  1123. in the gospel

  1124. of Jesus.

  1125. They pray joyfully,

  1126. singing gospel truths,

  1127. having taken a public

  1128. beating with rods.

  1129. They're still

  1130. bearing witness

  1131. in the word

  1132. and the life

  1133. of these prisoners

  1134. so that all

  1135. the other prisoners

  1136. hear this gospel

  1137. as they proclaim it.

  1138. This isn't normal.

  1139. People in that shape

  1140. don't sing

  1141. with joy

  1142. like this

  1143. of Jesus.

  1144. And there's the jailer.

1145. He's hearing this as well.

  1146. We don't know

  1147. the lyrics

  1148. to these songs

  1149. that they're singing

  1150. in prison

  1151. but our songs

  1152. reflect God's good news.

  1153. They reflect

  1154. the good news

  1155. that we are created

  1156. by a loving,

  1157. good,

  1158. holy God

  1159. that he saves sinners

  1160. who believe

  1161. in the work

  1162. of his son,

  1163. our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1164. That first day

  1165. when they got

  1166. to preach the gospel

  1167. to the jailer,

1168. we read in Acts 16

    Acts 16:29

  1169. verse 29

  1170. that the jailer

  1171. fell down

  1172. trembling

  1173. before Paul

  1174. and Silas.

  1175. That's the power

  1176. of God's gospel

  1177. and the Holy Spirit

  1178. applying it

  1179. to this man.

  1180. In verse 30

  1181. we read that

  1182. he brought them out

  1183. and said,

  1184. Sirs,

  1185. what must I do

  1186. to be saved?

  1187. And they said,

  1188. believe on the Lord

  1189. Jesus Christ

1190. and you will be saved

  1191. you and your household.

  1192. That jailer

  1193. he must have

  1194. quite an experience,

  1195. quite a resume.

  1196. How do you get

  1197. to be the jailer

  1198. of this little Rome,

  1199. the great city

  1200. of Philippi?

  1201. Position of power

  1202. and authority.

  1203. It's also dealing

  1204. with things

  1205. that no one else

  1206. wants to have

  1207. to deal with.

  1208. Amazing grace,

  1209. how sweet the sound

  1210. that saved

  1211. a wretch like me.

  1212. Jailer falls down

  1213. trembling,

  1214. what must I do

  1215. to be saved?

  1216. Well now this jailer

  1217. and his household,

  1218. they are partners

  1219. in the fellowship

  1220. of the gospel,

  1221. partners in the ministry,

1222. even from a great distance

  1223. now from Rome

  1224. to Philippi,

  1225. you're partners

  1226. with Paul

  1227. and Timothy.

  1228. You see how God

  1229. shapes his church?

1230. There in the living room

  1231. of the wealthy

  1232. business woman,

  1233. that's Lydia,

  1234. sat a girl

  1235. that everyone

  1236. thought was crazy,

  1237. most likely

  1238. the keeper

  1239. of the city's jailhouse

  1240. along with his family

  1241. and servants,

  1242. and that's

  1243. the beautiful church.

  1244. These are sinners

  1245. that have been

  1246. set apart

  1247. and declared

  1248. by God

  1249. to be saints.

  1250. the Philippian church

  1251. shared a fellowship,

  1252. a communion,

  1253. and a common

  1254. participation

  1255. in the good news.

  1256. They shared this

  1257. across the Mediterranean

  1258. sea with the churches

1259. in all of the other cities

  1260. that God

  1261. had planted.

  1262. Brothers and sisters,

1263. I want to encourage you,

1264. if you are in Christ,

  1265. you share the same

  1266. fellowship

  1267. with them.

  1268. it's the church

  1269. in heaven

  1270. and on earth

  1271. from the earliest

  1272. generation

  1273. to this day.

  1274. And you who believe

  1275. in Jesus Christ

  1276. today,

  1277. maybe for the first

  1278. time truly,

  1279. you too

  1280. will be declared

  1281. a saint.

  1282. King Jesus

  1283. will make you

  1284. willing.

  1285. You will choose

  1286. him.

  1287. You will gladly

  1288. follow

  1289. King Jesus,

  1290. trusting him

  1291. by faith.

  1292. He's good.

  1293. And you will be

  1294. filled with joy

  1295. unspeakable

  1296. like Paul,

  1297. full of his glory.

  1298. Because each

  1299. one of you

  1300. whom God

  1301. calls and draws

  1302. in and makes

  1303. part of his body,

  1304. you are an

  1305. important partner

  1306. in his mission.

  1307. The mission

  1308. he carries out

  1309. through his people,

  1310. the church.

  1311. So this

  1312. is how

  1313. God shapes you,

  1314. his beloved church,

  1315. for his purpose.

  1316. Jesus.

  1317. Let's pray

  1318. and ask

  1319. that God

  1320. will work

  1321. this truth

  1322. into our lives

  1323. for his glory.

  1324. Amen.
