  1. All right, well, thank you for your patience.

  2. Philippians chapter 1.

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  3. Our sermon text today is Philippians 1-6,

  4. but I'd like to read the whole prayer,

  5. so we're going to read verses 1 through 11.

  6. Philippians 1, verses 1 through 11.

    Philippians 1:1–11

  7. And I read this trusting that it is God's inspired,

  8. inerrant, infallible, clear, and sufficient word.

  9. It's God's very own word for you, His people.

  10. Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ,

  11. to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi,

  12. with the bishops and deacons,

  13. grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  14. I thank my God upon every remembrance of you,

  15. always in every prayer of mine,

  16. making requests for you all with joy

  17. for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now.

  18. being confident of this very thing,

  19. that He who has begun a good work in you,

  20. will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

  21. Just as it is right for me to think this of you all,

  22. because I have you in my heart,

  23. inasmuch as both in my chains

  24. and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel,

  25. you all are partakers with me of grace.

  26. For God is my witness,

  27. how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.

  28. Verse 9,

  29. And this I pray that your love may abound still more and more

  30. in knowledge and all discernment,

  31. that you may approve the things that are excellent,

  32. that you may be sincere and without offense

  33. till the day of Christ,

  34. being filled with the fruits of righteousness,

  35. which are by Jesus Christ,

  36. to the glory and praise of God.

  37. This is the word of the Lord.

  38. Thanks be to God.

  39. You may be seated.

  40. Let's pray.

  41. Let's pray.

  42. Father, thank you for how your Holy Spirit illumines to us

  43. a glimpse of the eternal reality

  44. that Jesus Christ,

  45. God the Son,

  46. He took on flesh.

  47. He accomplished the mission the Father gave Him to do.

  48. That He is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

  49. And one day He will come.

  50. And He will judge the living and the dead

  51. according to your standard.

  52. We praise you, Lord,

  53. that though you owe man nothing,

  54. you could have left us in our fallen sinful state,

  55. you have come through Jesus Christ

  56. to bring a people to yourself.

  57. We thank you that you are still at work

  58. completing in your people

  59. that which Jesus Christ finished

  60. in His life, death, and resurrection.

  61. We pray, Lord,

  62. that through the ministry of your word,

  63. you will accomplish that

  64. in whoever you give eyes to see

  65. and ears to hear.

  66. And we pray that more will come, Lord.

  67. More will come to know

  68. how good and how gracious you are.

  69. For your glory we ask.

  70. Amen.

  71. Amen.

  72. When you get to watch a master craftsman

  73. at his work,

  74. it holds you for a while, doesn't it?

  75. I can just be amazed

  76. watching so many people

  77. that are good at their craft

  78. do their work.

  79. I had a very simple repair

  80. that needed to be done.

  81. It was a rock that hit my windshield.

  82. And I just had to stand there

  83. and observe and watch him come

  84. and put the machine on

  85. and scrape out the bits of glass.

  86. And just to watch someone

  87. really good at what they do

  88. fix a piece of glass

  89. was fascinating to me.

  90. I was gripped.

  91. I remember a sign

  92. at a mechanic shop growing up

  93. and it was something like

  94. $50 to fix your car,

  95. $75 if you watch,

  96. and then $100 if you ask questions,

  97. $150 if you try to help.

  98. So, to watch is one thing.

  99. The beautiful thing, though,

  100. is that in Jesus Christ,

  101. as he pulls us into his church,

  102. we get to watch the master work.

  103. I'd like to draw your attention

  104. one more time to verse 6 in our text.

  105. Philippians 1.6

  106. Paul has his eyes open

  107. to the work that God is doing.

  108. And it fills him with joy

  109. and thanksgiving and confidence.

  110. And he writes,

  111. I am confident of this very thing

  112. that he who began a good work in you

  113. will complete it

  114. until the day of Jesus Christ.

  115. Well, I encourage you

  116. to memorize this verse.

  117. And I challenge you to do it

  118. in the next 30 minutes.

  119. And to help you,

  120. I'm going to read it for you

  121. about six times as we go.

  122. And all I want to do this morning

  123. is apply this beautiful truth

  124. to five categories of people

  125. focused on one word or phrase

  126. in Philippians 1.6 each time.

  127. The first phrase I want to focus on

  128. is that God begins this work.

  129. He who has begun this good work in you.

  130. So I want to talk first of all to you

  131. in whom God has not yet begun a good work.

  132. And my encouragement to you is very simple.

  133. I believe there's some in our congregation

  134. for whom this is still true.

  135. And maybe there's others within earshot.

  136. If God has not yet begun his good work in you,

  137. ask him to.

  138. See, you and I, we need God to work on our hearts.

  139. Amen?

  140. Amen?

  141. We need this.

  142. Here's the difference.

  143. We go to a doctor, a heart doctor even,

  144. and he'll say,

  145. you got a heart problem.

  146. Do I have your attention now?

  147. Will you listen?

  148. Will you do what I've said?

  149. And we want to take on for ourselves

  150. all the things we need to do

  151. to fix the heart problem

  152. the doctor told us about.

  153. Try to get your heart rate up

  154. for 20 minutes a day.

  155. Watch your diet.

  156. Get some omega-3 into your system.

  157. And then we go and do those things

  158. because the doctor said,

  159. you got a heart problem.

  160. But that's not what Paul is preaching

  161. to the church, is it?

  162. He says,

  163. he who has begun a good work in you.

  164. In other words,

  165. it's God who is doing this work in your heart.

  166. The reason for this is because

  167. we can't work on our own hearts this way.

  168. We are born without the Holy Spirit.

  169. We are born under the curse of Adam.

  170. Every single person.

  171. Fallen.

  172. Condemned.

  173. Twisted.

  174. Distorted.

  175. Bent toward evil.

  176. That's how we're born

  177. and brought into this world.

  178. The image of God still remains,

  179. but it's defaced.

  180. Like you take a penny

  181. and scrape the face.

  182. God must begin

  183. His good work in you.

  184. Listen to this verse.

  185. Isaiah 64-7.

  186. It was one that we came across

  187. in our study with the men

  188. on Wednesday mornings.

  189. It shakes me in my boots still today.

  190. Isaiah 64-7.

  191. There is no one

  192. who calls on your name,

  193. he's telling God.

  194. There is no one

  195. who stirs himself up

  196. to take hold of you.

  197. You, God,

  198. have hidden your face from us.

  199. You have consumed us

  200. because of our iniquities.

  201. Iniquities.

  202. Listen to how the ESV

  203. puts that last statement.

  204. God,

  205. you have made us

  206. melt

  207. in the hand

  208. of our iniquities.

  209. Well,

  210. we know what sin is.

  211. Sin is when we fall short

  212. of the glory of God.

  213. Iniquity

  214. is when we sin

  215. with a heavy hand

  216. lifted up against God.

  217. It's the most serious

  218. type of sin.

  219. And God has made us

  220. melt

  221. in the hand

  222. of our own iniquities.

  223. And that's why

  224. there's no one

  225. who calls on the name

  226. of God

  227. if we're left to ourselves.

  228. Amen?

  229. God's work begins

  230. only after

  231. your self-righteous

  232. work ends.

  233. God begins a good work

  234. in each one of His people,

  235. but He begins that

  236. only after

  237. your and my

  238. self-righteous work

  239. has come to its end.

  240. We've run out.

  241. We're exhausted.

  242. We're done trying

  243. on our own.

  244. And this is good news.

  245. This is really

  246. the beginning

  247. of the Gospel.

  248. Listen to how Paul

  249. put this in Colossians 2.12.

  250. You must first get buried

  251. with Jesus Christ

  252. in baptism.

  253. You must die

  254. to self-righteous

  255. efforts and works.

  256. Die to yourself

  257. in trying to save yourself.

  258. And when you receive

  259. Him by faith

  260. alone

  261. in Jesus Christ

  262. alone

  263. by His grace

  264. alone

  265. then you are also

  266. raised

  267. with Jesus Christ

  268. through faith

  269. in the powerful

  270. working

  271. of God.

  272. It's the powerful

  273. work of God

  274. that begins

  275. this good work

  276. of regeneration.

  277. How powerful

  278. is the work of God

  279. to begin

  280. in your heart

  281. and in mine?

  282. It's the same power

  283. with which God

  284. raised Jesus Christ

  285. from the dead.

  286. In the Gospels

  287. of Mark and Matthew

  288. we read about

  289. a real estate mogul.

  290. A man

  291. who owned

  292. a lot of property.

  293. And this man

  294. came up to Jesus

  295. and asked this question

  296. in Mark 10.17.

  297. What shall I do

  298. that I

  299. may inherit

  300. eternal life?

  301. And Jesus

  302. exposes him.

  303. You think you need

  304. to do more

  305. and you can do more?

  306. Jesus says

  307. you've kept

  308. all the moral law.

  309. How about your heart?

  310. Have you kept

  311. the moral law

  312. of God

  313. in a loving way

  314. in your heart

  315. as well?

  316. See some have said

  317. the point of this

  318. is to make that man

  319. go back

  320. and try even harder.

  321. And it's just

  322. the opposite.

  323. The point

  324. is that you can't

  325. try hard enough

  326. on your own.

  327. The point of the law

  328. in its first use

  329. is to crush you.

  330. You can never

  331. make yourself right

  332. with God

  333. by your own efforts

  334. by your own works.

  335. This ruler

  336. was unwilling

  337. to give up

  338. trying to save himself.

  339. He wanted to do more

  340. and he wanted to

  341. inherit

  342. eternal life

  343. by his own standing.

  344. And the Lord Jesus

  345. laid him flat.

  346. God's work begins

  347. in your heart

  348. and in mine

  349. only after

  350. your self-righteous

  351. work ends.

  352. So,

  353. for you

  354. in whom God

  355. has not yet begun

  356. his good work,

  357. ask him

  358. to do that.

  359. Ask him

  360. to bring you

  361. to the end

  362. of yourself

  363. and work

  364. powerfully in you

  365. in the way

  366. that only he can.

  367. God's work

  368. will be

  369. good.

  370. The second

  371. word I want

  372. to share with you

  373. and encourage you

  374. with from our

  375. verse is the word

  376. good.

  377. Notice in verse 6,

  378. Paul says,

  379. I am confident

  380. of this very thing

  381. that he who has

  382. begun a good

  383. work in you

  384. will complete it

  385. until the day

  386. of Jesus Christ.

  387. Christ.

  388. Maybe there are

  389. some today

  390. who don't know

  391. or who have

  392. forgotten

  393. even in a subtle

  394. way

  395. that God's work

  396. in his people

  397. in your heart

  398. is a good

  399. work.

  400. It's painful,

  401. it's devastating

  402. at times,

  403. right?

  404. But it is good.

  405. So you who do

  406. not trust

  407. that God's work

  408. is good,

  409. my prayer for you

  410. today is that

  411. you will ask him

  412. to prove

  413. that this is so

  414. in your own life,

  415. that you can add

  416. your own testimony.

  417. My life

  418. has also proven

  419. that God's work

  420. is always good.

  421. You know what was

  422. the sin

  423. of the prodigal son?

  424. He did a lot of sins

  425. with his flesh,

  426. but his sin started

  427. in his heart

  428. before that,

  429. didn't it?

  430. The prodigal son,

  431. he thought that

  432. taking all of his

  433. inheritance up front,

  434. leaving his father's

  435. household,

  436. using all that money

  437. to throw parties,

  438. to have fake friends,

  439. share fake laughs,

  440. and give himself

  441. to prostitutes,

  442. he thought all of that

  443. was more good

  444. than being right

  445. with his dad

  446. and dwelling secure

  447. in his father's

  448. household.

  449. In this parable,

  450. do you see how

  451. this is exactly

  452. what Christ

  453. came to reveal

  454. to people

  455. who are fallen

  456. in our sin

  457. and whose minds

  458. are still twisted,

  459. chasing after

  460. the lust of the flesh?

  461. He revealed

  462. the most good

  463. is being right

  464. with the father.

  465. It doesn't get

  466. any better than that.

  467. And that's how

  468. Jesus Christ

  469. reveals the father

  470. to you and me.

  471. It's the father

  472. who runs to greet you

  473. with open arms,

  474. unashamed.

  475. He doesn't care

  476. how bad you smell.

  477. You're covered

  478. in the slop

  479. of pigsties

  480. and your own vomit.

  481. And he brings you

  482. into his loving arms.

  483. That's how good

  484. the father is.

  485. 1 Peter 2.3

  486. encourages the church

  487. to taste

  488. and see

  489. that the Lord

  490. is good.

  491. It's not enough

  492. for me to tell you this

  493. or maybe kids

  494. for your parents

  495. to tell you

  496. the Lord is good.

  497. I've tasted

  498. and I've seen.

  499. You need to taste

  500. and see for yourself

  501. the Lord

  502. is good.

  503. How good

  504. is the Lord?

  505. He's as much good

  506. as light is

  507. compared to darkness.

  508. He's so much more good

  509. like life

  510. is over death.

  511. He's so good.

  512. He's a God

  513. of blessings

  514. when you deserve wrath.

  515. The word good

  516. in Philippians 1.6

  517. it carries with it

  518. the meaning of

  519. that which is

  520. honorable,

  521. excellent,

  522. pleasant,

  523. agreeable,

  524. joyful,

  525. happy.

  526. And maybe the word

  527. that summarizes

  528. all of that

  529. representing God

  530. himself is

  531. good means gracious.

  532. God's work

  533. in you,

  534. inside of you,

  535. in your inner being,

  536. in your soul,

  537. it is a good,

  538. gracious work.

  539. I love how our

  540. confession of faith

  541. summarizes this

  542. on regeneration.

  543. This is the teaching

  544. of scripture summarized,

  545. boiled down.

  546. You and I were dead,

  547. but God

  548. enlightened your mind

  549. savingly

  550. to understand

  551. the things of God.

  552. He took away

  553. your heart of stone

  554. and he gave you

  555. a heart of flesh.

  556. He renewed your will.

  557. He makes you love

  558. what he says is good

  559. by his power.

  560. And he effectually

  561. draws you to

  562. Jesus Christ.

  563. Yet,

  564. so as you come freely,

  565. like the prodigal son

  566. sprinting,

  567. hoping he'll be

  568. accepting me

  569. and welcoming me home.

  570. And Jesus came to say,

  571. of course,

  572. he will.

  573. And this is all

  574. because he has

  575. made you willing

  576. by his grace.

  577. You see how good

  578. and gracious is

  579. in working inside of you

  580. from start to finish.

  581. That's why we sing

  582. with the hymn,

  583. Oh, how great

  584. thy loving kindness,

  585. vaster,

  586. broader than the sea.

  587. Oh, how marvelous

  588. thy goodness

  589. lavished on me.

  590. So you who do not yet

  591. trust that God's work

  592. is good,

  593. I pray that you will

  594. ask him

  595. to prove so

  596. in your own life.

  597. The third phrase

  598. I want to focus on

  599. is not only

  600. on how he began this,

  601. but how he completes this.

  602. Because I don't think

  603. I've said anything

  604. now that's too new

  605. to you all,

  606. but I do think

  607. that I and all of us

  608. have a tendency

  609. in our flesh

  610. and maybe we've sat

  611. under teaching

  612. to the contrary

  613. about how is it

  614. that God completes

  615. this work.

  616. Let me read verse 6

  617. one more time.

  618. I am confident

  619. of this,

  620. this very thing,

  621. that he

  622. who has begun

  623. a good work

  624. in you

  625. will complete it

  626. until the day

  627. of Jesus Christ.

  628. So I want to

  629. encourage you

  630. who want to

  631. complete this work

  632. in yourself,

  633. for yourself,

  634. to ask God

  635. to reform

  636. your thinking.

  637. Don't reform

  638. your thinking

  639. to what you hear me say

  640. or what you read

  641. somewhere else.

  642. let the Spirit

  643. through the Word

  644. of God

  645. reform our thinking

  646. on this.

  647. So you who want

  648. to complete the work

  649. that God started

  650. in you

  651. for yourself,

  652. you need to ask

  653. God to reform

  654. your thinking.

  655. I've thought a lot

  656. this week,

  657. why is it that we

  658. want to add something

  659. to God's salvation?

  660. I think it's because

  661. we really want

  662. to respond

  663. in gratitude,

  664. that's probably

  665. where it starts,

  666. but then it's also

  667. that we fear

  668. that maybe I'm

  669. not truly saved.

  670. Maybe there's

  671. something more

  672. I can do

  673. to help secure

  674. myself.

  675. And it's so subtle,

  676. but then our flesh

  677. wants to teach

  678. ourselves that

  679. we can do this,

  680. we can secure

  681. ourselves

  682. by completing

  683. what God started.

  684. or at least

  685. helping God

  686. complete what

  687. He started.

  688. But verse 6

  689. could not be

  690. any more clear.

  691. He who began

  692. a good work

  693. in you,

  694. He and no one

  695. else is the one

  696. who will complete

  697. it in you.

  698. You're probably

  699. already ahead of me

  700. on why this is

  701. so significant.

  702. It's because

  703. whoever began

  704. the work

  705. gets the glory

  706. for beginning

  707. the work.

  708. And whoever

  709. completes the work

  710. or has a share

  711. in completing

  712. the work,

  713. gets the glory

  714. or at least

  715. a share

  716. of the glory

  717. in completing

  718. it.

  719. So God's glory

  720. is what's at

  721. stake with

  722. this doctrine.

  723. We can put

  724. this question

  725. this way.

  726. How are you

  727. and I

  728. finally saved

  729. if you want

  730. to even put

  731. that qualifier

  732. in front of it?

  733. There's a very

  734. well-known,

  735. well-respected

  736. pastor who

  737. on many other

  738. doctrines is

  739. wonderful,

  740. but I just want

  741. to be cautious

  742. for myself

  743. and for your ears.

  744. This is how

  745. subtle it can be.

  746. Listen to what

  747. this pastor

  748. has written

  749. and see if you

  750. agree with it.

  751. Quote,

  752. no holiness,

  753. no heaven.

  754. Works of faith,

  755. obedience of faith,

  756. fruits of the

  757. spirit that come

  758. by faith

  759. are necessary

  760. for our

  761. final salvation.

  762. So,

  763. we should not

  764. speak of getting

  765. to heaven

  766. by faith alone

  767. in the same way

  768. we are justified

  769. by faith alone.

  770. Do you see

  771. how subtle

  772. this is?

  773. A crack

  774. in the door

  775. and enough

  776. of a distortion

  777. comes in

  778. that it can

  779. have a wrong

  780. effect on

  781. true believers.

  782. That's my

  783. caution.

  784. It can

  785. feed that

  786. part of our

  787. flesh that

  788. wants to

  789. secure ourselves

  790. and inevitably

  791. is siphoning

  792. away some

  793. glory from

  794. God.

  795. Here's how

  796. we can twist

  797. that in our

  798. mind.

  799. We can take

  800. that to

  801. mean that

  802. I must

  803. now muster

  804. up enough

  805. faith,

  806. enough faith,

  807. so that

  808. I can then

  809. do enough

  810. works,

  811. enough works.

  812. How much

  813. is enough?

  814. That I can

  815. obey enough,

  816. that I can

  817. show enough

  818. to finally

  819. be saved.

  820. That doesn't

  821. sound right,

  822. does it?

  823. What I want

  824. to persuade you

  825. with today

  826. is reading

  827. about four

  828. or five

  829. Bible verses

  830. so you

  831. can hear

  832. the word

  833. of Scripture

  834. which I

  835. believe is

  836. very clear

  837. on this

  838. point.

  839. Notice how

  840. that is not

  841. at all

  842. the tone

  843. of Paul.

  844. By the

  845. mercy of

  846. God,

  847. by the

  848. strength

  849. and the

  850. energy

  851. of God,

  852. Paul

  853. outworked

  854. any

  855. believer,

  856. I think,

  857. any saved

  858. sinner,

  859. he outworked.

  860. Listen to

  861. how Paul

  862. puts it.

  863. In the

  864. same way

  865. that God

  866. began a

  867. good work

  868. in you,

  869. God

  870. completes

  871. his

  872. work.

  873. Colossians

  874. 1.29,

  875. Paul wrote,

  876. I struggle,

  877. I toil

  878. with all

  879. his energy

  880. that he

  881. powerfully

  882. works in

  883. me.

  884. That's a

  885. very different

  886. tone.

  887. Galatians

  888. 3.2,

  889. Paul writes,

  890. let me ask

  891. you this,

  892. did you

  893. receive the

  894. Spirit by

  895. works of

  896. the law

  897. or by

  898. hearing with

  899. faith?

  900. Are you

  901. so foolish

  902. having

  903. begun by

  904. the Spirit,

  905. are you

  906. now being

  907. perfected

  908. by the

  909. flesh?

  910. Philippians

  911. 2.13,

  912. it is

  913. God

  914. who works

  915. in you

  916. both to

  917. will

  918. and to

  919. work

  920. for his

  921. good pleasure.

  922. You hear

  923. Paul's tone.

  924. I don't think

  925. it could be

  926. any more

  927. clear.

  928. God

  929. completes

  930. his work

  931. in his

  932. people

  933. by his

  934. power

  935. alone.

  936. 2.

  937. Peter 1.3,

  938. his divine

  939. power

  940. has granted

  941. to us

  942. all that

  943. we need

  944. for life

  945. and godliness.

  946. You see,

  947. it's God's

  948. divine power

  949. that has

  950. granted

  951. our final

  952. salvation

  953. through the

  954. knowledge of

  955. him who

  956. called us

  957. to his

  958. own glory

  959. and excellence.

  960. So for you

  961. who want

  962. to complete

  963. this work

  964. that God

  965. began in you

  966. for yourself,

  967. ask God

  968. to reform

  969. your thinking

  970. and he

  971. graciously

  972. will.

  973. The fourth

  974. word in our

  975. verse today

  976. that I want

  977. to encourage

  978. you with

  979. is the word

  980. confident.

  981. Confident.

  982. I am

  983. confident of

  984. this,

  985. that he

  986. who has

  987. begun a good

  988. work in you

  989. will complete

  990. it until

  991. the day

  992. of Jesus

  993. Christ.

  994. Most likely

  995. some of you

  996. if you're

  997. like me,

  998. today you

  999. need to be

  1000. strengthened

  1001. with confidence.

  1002. You need

  1003. to be

  1004. strengthened

  1005. with confidence

  1006. and my

  1007. prayer is

  1008. that you

  1009. will ask

  1010. God to

  1011. help you

  1012. trust him,

  1013. the source

  1014. of your

  1015. confidence.

  1016. Paul says

  1017. I am

  1018. confident of

  1019. this very

  1020. thing.

  1021. He's

  1022. confident,

  1023. he's

  1024. certain,

  1025. sure,

  1026. fully

  1027. persuaded

  1028. of this

  1029. very

  1030. thing.

  1031. God

  1032. will

  1033. finish

  1034. what

  1035. God

  1036. started.

  1037. That word

  1038. confident

  1039. was used

  1040. mockingly

  1041. of Jesus

  1042. Christ as

  1043. he hung

  1044. on the

  1045. cross

  1046. to pay

  1047. for our

  1048. sin.

  1049. In

  1050. Matthew

    Matthew 27:43

  1051. 27

  1052. verse

  1053. 43

  1054. they mocked

  1055. and they

  1056. said let

  1057. God

  1058. deliver

  1059. him.

  1060. He

  1061. trusted,

  1062. that's the

  1063. same word,

  1064. he had

  1065. confidence

  1066. in God.

  1067. Do you

  1068. need to be

  1069. strengthened

  1070. with such

  1071. confidence?

  1072. One of my

  1073. favorite

  1074. Puritans

  1075. John

  1076. Flavel

  1077. he

  1078. he fell

  1079. so passionately

  1080. about this

  1081. he ministered

  1082. to the

  1083. church.

  1084. Church

  1085. did Christ

  1086. finish

  1087. his work

  1088. for us?

  1089. Then there

  1090. can be no

  1091. doubt

  1092. he will

  1093. also finish

  1094. his work

  1095. in us.

  1096. Amen?

  1097. That's the

  1098. source of

  1099. our

  1100. confidence.

  1101. And it's

  1102. good that

  1103. we desire

  1104. that

  1105. confidence

  1106. that

  1107. blessed

  1108. assurance

  1109. that's

  1110. a gift

  1111. from the

  1112. Holy

  1113. Spirit.

  1114. We need

  1115. that

  1116. confidence

  1117. in our

  1118. own

  1119. lives

  1120. for

  1121. ourselves

  1122. for

  1123. our

  1124. soul.

  1125. We

  1126. also

  1127. are

  1128. burdened

  1129. and we

  1130. should

  1131. pray

  1132. that

  1133. God

  1134. will

  1135. help

  1136. our

  1137. loved

  1138. ones

  1139. to

  1140. trust

  1141. God

  1142. and

  1143. gain

  1144. such

  1145. confidence.

  1146. And I

  1147. pray that

  1148. you will

  1149. also at

  1150. least

  1151. allow

  1152. God

  1153. to stir

  1154. up a

  1155. portion

  1156. of your

  1157. heart

  1158. to care

  1159. that

  1160. he will

  1161. complete

  1162. the work

  1163. for this

  1164. congregation.

  1165. Paul,

  1166. by the

  1167. way,

  1168. is writing

  1169. to a

  1170. church,

  1171. isn't he?

  1172. For the

  1173. church at

  1174. Philippi,

  1175. all the

  1176. saints,

  1177. with the

  1178. elders and

  1179. deacons.

  1180. I'm

  1181. confident

  1182. for the

  1183. church,

  1184. for all

  1185. of you,

  1186. and under

  1187. Christ's

  1188. name,

  1189. as a

  1190. gathered

  1191. congregation,

  1192. Christ

  1193. will finish

  1194. what he

  1195. started

  1196. for you.

  1197. John

  1198. Gill had

  1199. written

  1200. this,

  1201. and to

  1202. me this

  1203. was such

  1204. a powerful

  1205. encouragement

  1206. for my

  1207. confidence

  1208. in this

  1209. truth,

  1210. that I

  1211. can trust

  1212. God to

  1213. finish

  1214. what he

  1215. started.

  1216. Quote,

  1217. where there

  1218. is grace,

  1219. there will

  1220. be glory.

  1221. Grace is

  1222. what we

  1223. need now,

  1224. the moment

  1225. we first

  1226. believed,

  1227. when he

  1228. first began

  1229. this good

  1230. work in

  1231. us,

  1232. and glory

  1233. is what

  1234. he holds

  1235. up to

  1236. us for

  1237. eternity,

  1238. to come

  1239. with Jesus

  1240. Christ.

  1241. Where there

  1242. is grace,

  1243. there will

  1244. be glory.

  1245. Is there

  1246. grace in

  1247. your life

  1248. from God?

  1249. God,

  1250. there will

  1251. be glory.

  1252. Here's

  1253. John Gill's

  1254. argument for

  1255. proving this.

  1256. God carries

  1257. out his

  1258. good work

  1259. in your

  1260. life

  1261. according

  1262. to who

  1263. he is.

  1264. He is

  1265. unchangeable

  1266. in his

  1267. nature,

  1268. in his

  1269. purposes,

  1270. in his

  1271. promises,

  1272. and in his

  1273. calling.

  1274. God is a

  1275. rock,

  1276. and his

  1277. work will

  1278. be perfected

  1279. by his

  1280. power sooner

  1281. or later

  1282. in his

  1283. people.

  1284. Because God

  1285. is faithful.

  1286. He will

  1287. never forsake

  1288. the work

  1289. of his

  1290. hands.

  1291. He alone

  1292. has the

  1293. power to

  1294. accomplish

  1295. what he

  1296. intends

  1297. in you.

  1298. Listen to

  1299. what John

  1300. Gill said.

  1301. It's even

  1302. better because

  1303. it's not

  1304. attached to

  1305. you at

  1306. all.

  1307. It happens

  1308. in you,

  1309. but it's

  1310. for God

  1311. himself.

  1312. God has

  1313. too much

  1314. of himself

  1315. pledged

  1316. to leave

  1317. his works

  1318. in your

  1319. hands.

  1320. Did you

  1321. catch that?

  1322. Let me run

  1323. that one by

  1324. you one

  1325. more time.

  1326. God has

  1327. too much

  1328. of himself

  1329. pledged

  1330. to leave

  1331. his work

  1332. in your

  1333. hands.

  1334. He is

  1335. committed

  1336. to completing

  1337. what he

  1338. started in

  1339. you.

  1340. If this

  1341. work is

  1342. not finished,

  1343. then the

  1344. glory of

  1345. God the

  1346. Father in

  1347. your election,

  1348. in the

  1349. covenant of

  1350. grace,

  1351. in your

  1352. salvation,

  1353. in the

  1354. mission of

  1355. his son,

  1356. the glory

  1357. of Christ

  1358. and redemption

  1359. and of

  1360. the spirit

  1361. and sanctification

  1362. would be

  1363. entirely

  1364. lost.

  1365. God has

  1366. way too

  1367. much

  1368. of himself

  1369. pledged

  1370. to leave

  1371. this good

  1372. work and

  1373. the finishing

  1374. of the work

  1375. he started

  1376. in your

  1377. hands or

  1378. mine.

  1379. Praise

  1380. God and

  1381. all glory

  1382. be to

  1383. God.

  1384. So he's

  1385. confident

  1386. of this

  1387. very thing.

  1388. And the

  1389. last phrase

  1390. I want to

  1391. encourage you

  1392. with is

  1393. the end

  1394. that this

  1395. is all

  1396. for.

  1397. I am

  1398. confident

  1399. of this

  1400. that he

  1401. who has

  1402. begun a

  1403. good work

  1404. in you

  1405. will

  1406. complete

  1407. it

  1408. until

  1409. the day

  1410. of Jesus

  1411. Christ.

  1412. This is

  1413. what it

  1414. is all

  1415. for.

  1416. It's

  1417. the chief

  1418. end of

  1419. man

  1420. to glorify

  1421. and enjoy

  1422. God

  1423. forever.

  1424. The day

  1425. of Jesus

  1426. Christ

  1427. is coming.

  1428. church

  1429. the Lord

  1430. who began

  1431. his good

  1432. work in

  1433. you

  1434. he will

  1435. complete

  1436. it

  1437. in his

  1438. own

  1439. timeline

  1440. for each

  1441. soul

  1442. and for

  1443. the church

  1444. global

  1445. invisible

  1446. under the

  1447. one true

  1448. God

  1449. on his

  1450. timeline.

  1451. He

  1452. will

  1453. finish

  1454. what he

  1455. started.

  1456. Someone

  1457. made a

  1458. joke that

  1459. there are

  1460. two seasons

  1461. in Colorado.

  1462. there's

  1463. winter

  1464. and then

  1465. there's

  1466. construction.

  1467. Those are

  1468. the two

  1469. seasons.

  1470. When it's

  1471. not snowing

  1472. there's

  1473. construction

  1474. being done.

  1475. I'm

  1476. familiar

  1477. with one

  1478. job site

  1479. here in

  1480. Parker

  1481. at which

  1482. 140

  1483. workers

  1484. show up

  1485. every day.

  1486. They are

  1487. doing dry

  1488. wall,

  1489. windows,

  1490. putting the

  1491. sprinkler

  1492. system in,

  1493. laying down

  1494. the turf,

  1495. painting all

  1496. the walls.

  1497. All those

  1498. crews are

  1499. going to

  1500. keep

  1501. working

  1502. until the

  1503. project is

  1504. complete.

  1505. How will

  1506. we know

  1507. that the

  1508. project is

  1509. complete?

  1510. It's when

  1511. they're done

  1512. working on

  1513. it.

  1514. What is

  1515. it for?

  1516. What's

  1517. the end

  1518. of the

  1519. project?

  1520. In this

  1521. case,

  1522. it's a

  1523. school.

  1524. When you

  1525. see the

  1526. children

  1527. running on

  1528. the playground,

  1529. sitting in

  1530. the classrooms,

  1531. learning,

  1532. you see the

  1533. parents relieved,

  1534. smiling,

  1535. enjoying a

  1536. school in

  1537. our town,

  1538. you know

  1539. that the

  1540. project is

  1541. complete.

  1542. The

  1543. project has

  1544. a worthy

  1545. end.

  1546. There will

  1547. never be a

  1548. shortage of

  1549. funding or

  1550. labor or

  1551. anything that's

  1552. needed until

  1553. those kids are

  1554. in the building

  1555. learning,

  1556. because that's

  1557. why that

  1558. project was

  1559. begin.

  1560. The church

  1561. is the

  1562. glorious project

  1563. of God to

  1564. unite the

  1565. church to

  1566. himself,

  1567. Jesus Christ.

  1568. And how

  1569. will we know

  1570. that the work

  1571. of God is

  1572. done in his

  1573. church?

  1574. It's when

  1575. you,

  1576. church,

  1577. are enjoying

  1578. Jesus Christ

  1579. and glorifying

  1580. him.

  1581. Individually,

  1582. this will

  1583. happen on a

  1584. different timeline

  1585. for each soul.

  1586. But as a

  1587. church,

  1588. collectively,

  1589. we can trust

  1590. one pastor

  1591. will die,

  1592. the next pastor

  1593. will die,

  1594. the next pastor

  1595. will die,

  1596. deacons and

  1597. elders will be

  1598. raised up and

  1599. they'll be

  1600. buried.

  1601. The Lord

  1602. will carry on

  1603. his church.

  1604. It's the work

  1605. of God.

  1606. He alone can

  1607. build it,

  1608. and he will

  1609. build his

  1610. church.

  1611. church.

  1612. I'm so

  1613. encouraged by

  1614. the short

  1615. life of a

  1616. Scottish

  1617. Presbyterian

  1618. pastor named

  1619. Robert Murray

  1620. McShane.

  1621. One of the

  1622. things he wrote

  1623. is this,

  1624. only an inch

  1625. of time

  1626. remains,

  1627. and then

  1628. eternal

  1629. ages roll

  1630. on forever.

  1631. Only an inch

  1632. of time

  1633. remains.

  1634. When he

  1635. wrote that,

  1636. he didn't

  1637. know that

  1638. he would

  1639. get typhus

  1640. fever,

  1641. something you

  1642. get from

  1643. lice,

  1644. bugs like

  1645. that.

  1646. He preached

  1647. a sermon

  1648. on a Sunday

  1649. within 48

  1650. hours.

  1651. He was

  1652. dead,

  1653. and they

  1654. buried him

  1655. at the

  1656. age of

  1657. 29.

  1658. The Lord's

  1659. work in

  1660. preparing his

  1661. soul for

  1662. eternity was

  1663. complete.

  1664. It doesn't

  1665. mean he

  1666. attained the

  1667. same level

  1668. of maturity

  1669. as Paul,

  1670. and we

  1671. all fall

  1672. short of

  1673. the glory

  1674. of Jesus

  1675. Christ,

  1676. but for

  1677. that soul,

  1678. 29 years,

  1679. that was

  1680. his timeline.

  1681. I feel

  1682. like on

  1683. this doctrine,

  1684. Robert Murray

  1685. Machine in

  1686. the 1800s

  1687. put so

  1688. clearly and

  1689. simply what

  1690. all the

  1691. other reformers

  1692. and the

  1693. further

  1694. reformation,

  1695. the Puritans,

  1696. had been

  1697. working out

  1698. from Scripture

  1699. and synthesizing

  1700. up to this

  1701. point.

  1702. So I've

  1703. written about

  1704. four questions

  1705. and answers

  1706. as if I

  1707. got to

  1708. just interview

  1709. Robert Murray

  1710. Machine at

  1711. age 28 or

  1712. so you can

  1713. hear what

  1714. God had been

  1715. doing in

  1716. his life

  1717. before the

  1718. Lord took

  1719. him to

  1720. glory.

  1721. One question

  1722. I wanted to

  1723. ask him is

  1724. this,

  1725. what has

  1726. God shown

  1727. you about

  1728. yourself in

  1729. God's work

  1730. of completing

  1731. you and

  1732. preparing you

  1733. for the day

  1734. of the Lord

  1735. Jesus Christ?

  1736. McShane

  1737. wrote,

  1738. the seed

  1739. of every

  1740. sin

  1741. known to

  1742. man

  1743. is in

  1744. my heart.

  1745. Next

  1746. question,

  1747. what is

  1748. your source

  1749. of confidence?

  1750. Paul had

  1751. a confidence

  1752. that God

  1753. would complete

  1754. this work,

  1755. what's your

  1756. source of

  1757. confidence?

  1758. McShane

  1759. wrote,

  1760. what a man

  1761. is on his

  1762. knees before

  1763. God,

  1764. that he is

  1765. and nothing

  1766. more.

  1767. You see

  1768. what he's

  1769. saying?

  1770. Every

  1771. sin

  1772. known to

  1773. man,

  1774. that seed

  1775. is in

  1776. my heart.

  1777. What I

  1778. am on my

  1779. knees before

  1780. God,

  1781. that I

  1782. am and

  1783. nothing

  1784. more,

  1785. nothing in

  1786. my hands

  1787. I bring.

  1788. Pastor

  1789. Robert,

  1790. how do

  1791. you pray?

  1792. And he

  1793. wrote,

  1794. Lord,

  1795. make me

  1796. as holy

  1797. as a

  1798. pardoned

  1799. sinner can

  1800. be.

  1801. Amen.

  1802. Well,

  1803. I only got

  1804. four questions,

  1805. so I

  1806. squeezed

  1807. three in

  1808. together

  1809. on this

  1810. last one.

  1811. Pastor

  1812. Robert,

  1813. what have

  1814. you learned

  1815. in these

  1816. 28 years,

  1817. a handful

  1818. of years

  1819. in the

  1820. ministry?

  1821. What do

  1822. you know

  1823. for certain?

  1824. And what's

  1825. your advice

  1826. for Christians

  1827. like us

  1828. here today?

  1829. He wrote,

  1830. unfathomable,

  1831. unfathomable

  1832. oceans

  1833. of grace

  1834. are in

  1835. Christ

  1836. for you.

  1837. For every

  1838. look at

  1839. self,

  1840. take ten

  1841. looks to

  1842. Christ.

  1843. Dive

  1844. and dive

  1845. again.

  1846. You will

  1847. never come

  1848. to the

  1849. bottom of

  1850. these gracious

  1851. depths.

  1852. the Lord

  1853. who began

  1854. his good

  1855. work in

  1856. you,

  1857. he will

  1858. complete it

  1859. on his

  1860. own timeline

  1861. until the

  1862. day of

  1863. Jesus

  1864. Christ.

  1865. Church,

  1866. beloved

  1867. congregation

  1868. of the

  1869. Lord Jesus,

  1870. God is

  1871. preparing

  1872. you and

  1873. he's preparing

  1874. us together

  1875. for himself.

  1876. one way

  1877. or the

  1878. other,

  1879. you and

  1880. I will

  1881. be with

  1882. the

  1883. Lord

  1884. very soon

  1885. if he's

  1886. begun a

  1887. work of

  1888. grace in

  1889. your life.

  1890. He will

  1891. make sure

  1892. that you're

  1893. ready.

  1894. Your part

  1895. is to

  1896. simply ask

  1897. him to

  1898. watch him

  1899. prove so

  1900. in your

  1901. life.

  1902. Thank him

  1903. for being

  1904. so patient

  1905. and reforming

  1906. your thinking.

  1907. Keep

  1908. trusting him

  1909. and rest

  1910. knowing that

  1911. you are

  1912. his.

  1913. He is

  1914. preparing

  1915. you for

  1916. himself on

  1917. his timetable

  1918. for his

  1919. glory because

  1920. he alone

  1921. is God

  1922. and he

  1923. will be

  1924. glorified in

  1925. the life of

  1926. his church.

  1927. Isn't it

  1928. humbling and

  1929. a source of

  1930. confidence and

  1931. strength that

  1932. we get to

  1933. see God

  1934. working in

  1935. his people

  1936. within the

  1937. church?

  1938. Just as we

  1939. can watch a

  1940. master lay

  1941. down tile or

  1942. build something

  1943. out of wood,

  1944. that's what we

  1945. get to do in

  1946. the church with

  1947. one another.

  1948. We get to

  1949. watch our

  1950. master do

  1951. his work in

  1952. his people and

  1953. just glory in

  1954. what he's

  1955. doing.

  1956. I am

  1957. confident of

  1958. this, that

  1959. he who has

  1960. begun a good

  1961. work in you

  1962. will complete

  1963. it until the

  1964. day of Jesus

  1965. Christ.

  1966. Amen?

  1967. Let's pray.

  1968. Father, thank

  1969. you for your

  1970. promise.

  1971. Thank you for

  1972. your good

  1973. work that you

  1974. do in your

  1975. people for

  1976. your glory.

  1977. We pray that

  1978. we can rest

  1979. knowing that

  1980. you are the

  1981. one who saves

  1982. from the

  1983. beginning to

  1984. the end.

  1985. Amen.
