  1. God's Word, Philippians 1, verses 18 through 26.

    Philippians 1:18–26

  2. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached, and in this I rejoice.

  3. Yes, and I will rejoice, for I know that this will turn out from my deliverance through your prayer

  4. and the supply of the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ, according to my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed.

  5. But with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death.

  6. For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

  7. But if I live on in my flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor.

  8. Yet what shall I choose? I cannot tell, for I am hard-pressed between the two,

  9. having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.

  10. Nevertheless, to remain in the flesh is more needful for you.

  11. And being confident of this, I know that I shall remain and continue with you all for your progress and the joy of faith.

  12. That your rejoicing for me may be more abundant in Jesus Christ by my coming to you again.

  13. This is the word of the Lord.

  14. Thanks be to God.

  15. You may be seated.

  16. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  17. Let's pray.

  18. Let's pray.

  19. O Holy Spirit, please magnify Christ.

  20. Lord, please open our eyes to see your glory.

  21. To see our King Jesus alive, working, leading, ministering, and advancing his own kingdom.

  22. For your glory we pray.

  23. Amen.

  24. Amen.

  25. Amen.

  26. I know several of you, like me, have been wrestling these weeks with the fall to sin or the disclosure of hidden secret sins of some Christians who are very well known.

  27. So my sermon title today from this text is, Who Can Finish This Life Well?

  28. I've shared with you before, and it continues to be true.

  29. One of my greatest fears is that I would fall and bring shame to Christ in his name.

  30. I know many of our men have shared that as well.

  31. And we don't trust ourselves.

  32. We need the Lord to preserve us every day that we're alive.

  33. Who can finish this life well?

  34. You probably heard that as Paul's focus in that passage I just read.

  35. He's afraid of bringing shame.

  36. And he wants Christ to be magnified.

  37. And he's got his own imminent death in view.

  38. Can Paul finish this life well?

  39. Without bringing shame to Christ?

  40. That's what's troubling him as well.

  41. My encouragement to you in two short sentences is this.

  42. Who can finish this life well?

  43. Some don't.

  44. You can.

  45. And I would like to walk through these phrases, really.

  46. Just these couple verses.

  47. And do our best to get at the meaning of the Holy Spirit as he inspired and breathed out these words for the church.

  48. My first observation is this.

  49. To finish well, feed what you feel with what you know.

  50. To finish well, feed what you're feeling.

  51. Feed that with what you know.

  52. Paul has a Christ-redeemed view of what has happened.

  53. I think verse 18 could very easily be divided into two verses.

  54. He had just talked about how you look at the church all around and you see the evil motives exposed.

  55. He says,

  56. What then?

  57. Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached.

  58. And in this, I rejoice.

  59. And that's where we left off last week.

  60. He has a Christ-redeemed view of what has happened in the past.

  61. But then I think that next phrase, he shifts his focus to what will happen in the future.

  62. He says,

  63. Yes, and I shall rejoice.

  64. I look back at the confusion within the church, what's visible.

  65. And I choose to rejoice when Christ is preached.

  66. Now, looking forward, I shall rejoice.

  67. It's a simple future verb.

  68. Nothing extra bold or confident.

  69. And it's simply a statement of fact.

  70. Looking forward, not knowing what will come.

  71. I shall continue to rejoice.

  72. He says,

  73. For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance.

  74. Well, we've been seeing how Paul went and preached in Jerusalem, how he was also one misleading people,

  75. and he was arrested and attached to a chain to a Roman soldier ever since.

  76. And most likely, his trial has several parts.

  77. He's not yet faced Caesar for the final verdict.

  78. But he has reason to be hopeful.

  79. As we read in our passage, he still has an inclination he might get to see the Philippians again and be released.

  80. But he's also not very certain.

  81. He's sending his letter through others.

  82. He might not get to see them.

  83. But what he does know in verse 19 is that in this,

  84. no matter what comes of this,

  85. it will turn out for my deliverance.

  86. Well, what is it that is Paul's true fear here?

  87. He doesn't know if he's going to live or die.

  88. There's only one thing keeping that sharp blade of an iron axe from his sensitive skin on his neck.

  89. And that's the whim of the emperor.

  90. He says, I shall rejoice for I know.

  91. His rejoicing is tied to his feeling.

  92. To what he knows.

  93. He says, I shall rejoice.

  94. This will be my experience as a Christian.

  95. I shall in the future.

  96. I shall experience rejoicing.

  97. For I know.

  98. Someone said it's like an umbilical cord.

  99. You know, the umbilical cord ties that baby as it comes out of the mother's womb.

  100. And inside the womb, this little cord into the belly button provides the food for the baby to live.

  101. His rejoicing is fed through this umbilical cord of what he knows.

  102. It's not rooted in a mood.

  103. And it's also not rooted in his own stoic resolve by his own flesh and power.

  104. It's not.

  105. It's through the knowledge that God gives him through the word.

  106. That's what feeds his rejoicing.

  107. Christian joy is only fueled by true Christian doctrine.

  108. To know God through his word.

  109. That's what feeds true Christian joy and true Christian experience.

  110. Now, it's possible to have a lot of knowledge about God.

  111. And to have no experience of God.

  112. Someone said there's there's one foot that will keep you from heaven.

  113. It's that distance between the head and the heart.

  114. If you know God only in your head, but not in your heart, you don't know God.

  115. It's possible, Al Martin commented, to possess Christian truth without feeling.

  116. Whatever you think you know of God, if he has not shattered your heart and filled it with his own holy presence, then you don't know him savingly.

  117. But the other is also true that it's impossible to feel a genuine Christian experience without knowledge.

  118. See, first, the light of Christ comes through your head.

  119. You hear the gospel.

  120. And this is good news for you, too.

  121. And that light of Christ coming in through your understanding.

  122. It warms your heart.

  123. It's light and fire.

  124. That's what it is to be a Christian.

  125. Paul says, I shall rejoice for I know what I know will not be taken away from me.

  126. And I know that one way or the other, Christ will be magnified.

  127. That's his focus.

  128. You might wonder like me, well, is he referring here to the what I know?

  129. Is it that he will have confidence?

  130. He will have boldness.

  131. He will have the strength in the worst of temptations.

  132. Those are more the gifts.

  133. Or does he know that it's the spirit of Christ that will be supplied?

  134. And the answer is you can't separate the gifts, strength, boldness, confidence from the giver.

  135. If you have the spirit of God through Christ, you receive all of his gifts.

  136. And the giver is never separated from his gifts.

  137. So your confidence comes from knowing that Christ dwells in you by his Holy Spirit.

  138. And you can rejoice only when you have Christ.

  139. So to finish well, feed what you feel with what you know.

  140. Number two, you'll want to walk out this life well.

  141. If you think of what you are stepping into next.

  142. You'll want to walk out the very last steps, even if it's with a limp in this life.

  143. If you think about what you are stepping into in the next life.

  144. In verse 19, he says, yes, I shall rejoice for I know that this will turn out for my deliverance.

  145. Do you remember in 2 Timothy 4.13, how Paul wrote to Timothy and he said,

  146. When you come, bring my cloak and my books, especially the parchments.

  147. You remember that?

  148. And that was about two years later.

  149. That's at the end of his time in prison.

  150. Paul wants the word of God with him and the books explaining the truth of God to help keep feeding him,

  151. feeding his soul and his feelings.

  152. His body is cold.

  153. He needs a cloak.

  154. But it's the truth of God that keeps ministering to him.

  155. And even though Philippians is written much before that,

  156. Paul most likely had some portions of scripture or he had it memorized in his head and in his heart.

  157. Because when he says this phrase in verse 19,

  158. This will turn out for my deliverance.

  159. He's quoting from the Greek Old Testament.

  160. That's a word for word for Job 13.16.

  161. So Job, that's the book about the man who lost everything unjustly.

  162. And he's wrestling with the goodness of God.

  163. You think about Paul studying the book of Job for this time of imprisonment,

  164. this time of final trials and the suffering in his body.

  165. And he's quoting back to the church from the Old Testament what God used to minister to him.

  166. This will turn out for your deliverance.

  167. That phrase will turn out, that verb, it literally means to come down from.

  168. As in coming down from a ship.

  169. So here he is in Rome, you know, ships are coming and going.

  170. They're carrying merchandise all over the world.

  171. And you see people coming down from a ship onto shore.

  172. That same verb is used in John 21.9 where it says,

  173. As soon as they had come down onto the land,

  174. they saw Jesus who had prepared a breakfast for them with fish and bread.

  175. You remember that story?

  176. So here's the word picture.

  177. Paul's on the ship over which he has no control.

  178. And it's the last years of his life.

  179. But he knows when I get off of this ship, of this vessel, this life,

  180. I'm stepping onto the shore of the kingdom of heaven.

  181. And he's keeping that in the forefront of his mind.

  182. This ride that I'm on now that I have no control over in this life.

  183. When I step off of this,

  184. I'm stepping into paradise with Jesus Christ.

  185. And that gives you strength to forbear and to long suffer.

  186. You know what you're stepping onto next.

  187. Our confession of faith speaks of the perseverance of the saints.

  188. Really, if you look at how it's worded,

  189. a better description is the preservation of the saints.

  190. God preserves his people to the very end.

  191. Listen to this wording from 1689.

  192. The same God who first called you continues to still call you.

  193. And he begets in you and nourishes in you more faith,

  194. more repentance, more love, more joy, more hope,

  195. and all the graces of the spirit until your immortality.

  196. God provides all of that.

  197. He's the one who birthed those graces in you.

  198. He's the one who will continue supplying you with them.

  199. And though many storms and floods arise and beat against them,

  200. you who are saved by Christ in no way shall ever be able to be taken off of that foundation and rock

  201. upon which by faith you are fastened.

  202. Let that come for you.

  203. Christ, he's the one who went on ahead and he's waiting for you on the rock of paradise.

  204. And you're fastened to him by faith.

  205. And he's the one pulling you and preserving you and supplying you everything you need.

  206. And the storms and the winds and the destruction of the waves,

  207. it's pounding this vessel.

  208. But Christ is the one pulling you and he is a rock.

  209. He will pull you all the way to the end.

  210. When Paul says,

  211. This will turn out for my deliverance.

  212. This word deliverance can be translated as deliverance,

  213. but mostly it's translated over 40 times in the New Testament as salvation.

  214. The exact same word.

  215. This will turn out for my salvation.

  216. It can refer to deliverance from enemies,

  217. but it can also be more broad.

  218. It can refer to health and well-being of preservation.

  219. That which concludes to the soul's safety.

  220. Future blessings in Christ for eternity.

  221. All of this, this ride,

  222. it will turn out for my final salvation in Christ.

  223. What does Paul have in view?

  224. Well, we read in Acts 4.12,

  225. what the Holy Spirit poured out on all the churches is proclaiming

  226. through the early church and through Paul.

  227. Acts 4.12 is this salvation is none other than Christ,

  228. for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.

  229. And this, even these trials will turn out for my salvation in Christ.

  230. Our confession goes on to say in the same chapter,

  231. the sensible light and love of God may for a time be clouded and obscured from you.

  232. Some of you shared with me even this morning,

  233. you're in a time where prayer is cold.

  234. The goodness of God seems clouded.

  235. His light raised to warm you don't seem to be reaching you.

  236. The trials of life,

  237. our own faith that's so weak,

  238. and the temptations of Satan,

  239. they can obscure the good, strong, preserving hand of God from us.

  240. It can be hard to feel that sometimes, can't it?

  241. But the scripture confirms,

  242. as our confession captures,

  243. that you shall be sure to be kept

  244. by the power of God

  245. unto your final salvation,

  246. because Christ purchased you

  247. as his own possession.

  248. He engraved you

  249. upon the palm of his hands,

  250. and before time,

  251. God wrote your name

  252. in the book of life.

  253. He will preserve you to the very end.

  254. He is longing for you to be with him,

  255. and he's preparing your soul for eternity.

  256. So you will want to walk out this life well

  257. if you think of what you're stepping into next.

  258. Number three,

  259. to finish well,

  260. you and I need two things.

  261. To finish well,

  262. we need prayers

  263. and the supply of the Spirit

  264. to empower us.

  265. To finish well,

  266. you and I need prayers

  267. and we need the supply of the Spirit

  268. to empower us

  269. to finish well.

  270. That's what Paul states in verse 19.

  271. He says,

  272. through your prayer

  273. and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

  274. all of this will turn out

  275. to magnify Christ

  276. and for my salvation.

  277. Through your prayer, church.

  278. What is prayer?

  279. Our catechism says,

  280. prayer is an offering up

  281. of our desires to God

  282. for things agreeable to his will

  283. in the name of Jesus Christ

  284. with the confession of our sins

  285. and thankful acknowledgement

  286. of his mercies.

  287. That's what prayer is.

  288. And Paul says to the church,

  289. to this congregation,

  290. through your prayer.

  291. prayer.

  292. Your is second person plural.

  293. Collectively.

  294. All of you together praying.

  295. And the word prayer

  296. is in the singular.

  297. Through collective prayer

  298. of the church,

  299. offering up one prayer together,

  300. one voice to God

  301. for God's kingdom to advance.

  302. It's the efficacy

  303. of congregational intercession.

  304. It's a body

  305. locally gathered,

  306. in person,

  307. together,

  308. supplicating,

  309. asking,

  310. crying out our desires

  311. to God

  312. with boldness,

  313. one voice

  314. lifted up,

  315. one spirit

  316. in the name

  317. of Jesus Christ

  318. because we stand

  319. forgiven by him

  320. and we're praying

  321. out of gratitude,

  322. out of the abundance

  323. of joy

  324. and confidence

  325. we have

  326. that Christ's kingdom

  327. is advancing.

  328. And he says

  329. it's through your prayer

  330. and the supply

  331. of the spirit

  332. of Jesus Christ.

  333. One Greek scholar

  334. said if we didn't have

  335. all the rest of the Bible

  336. to inform this

  337. doctrine of prayer

  338. and how God works,

  339. with only this verse,

  340. we would be,

  341. we would have to believe

  342. and conclude

  343. that the spirit

  344. only supplies

  345. that for which we pray.

  346. I mean,

  347. he could not have linked

  348. congregational prayer

  349. and the supply

  350. of the spirit

  351. more closely

  352. than he did here.

  353. And how he used

  354. the language

  355. under the inspiration

  356. of the spirit.

  357. What does he mean

  358. by the supply

  359. of the spirit?

  360. The supply

  361. of the spirit.

  362. The ESV

  363. and the Christian

  364. Standard Bible

  365. translate this

  366. as the help

  367. of the spirit.

  368. The NIV

  369. translates it

  370. as God's provision

  371. through the spirit.

  372. He says it's

  373. the spirit

  374. of Christ.

  375. In Ephesians 4.16

  376. he describes

  377. how the whole body

  378. joined and knit together

  379. by what every joint

  380. supplies.

  381. The same word there.

  382. Supplies for the whole body

  383. to function.

  384. So what does

  385. this supply mean?

  386. In Roman literature,

  387. this word was used

  388. to describe

  389. providing all

  390. that would be needed

  391. for the housing,

  392. the food,

  393. the clothing,

  394. and all of the other needs

  395. of generous supply

  396. for a choir

  397. that would serve

  398. in a Roman theater.

  399. So you picture

  400. this troupe

  401. that sings together

  402. all the different parts

  403. in harmony,

  404. a glorious production.

  405. They're one unit,

  406. one voice,

  407. and you have

  408. a great patron

  409. that has plenty of money

  410. and he's going to supply

  411. all that they need

  412. to be able to exercise

  413. that gift

  414. and sing together

  415. as one voice.

  416. Isn't that a beautiful picture

  417. for congregational prayer?

  418. fully supplied

  419. by the Spirit

  420. to use the gifts

  421. he's given

  422. to sing out

  423. the melody

  424. of the gospel.

  425. And you probably

  426. picked up on this

  427. and our focus

  428. has been Trinitarian

  429. this morning.

  430. He calls it

  431. the Spirit

  432. of Jesus Christ.

  433. From the one God

  434. proceeds the Son.

  435. The Son

  436. ascended to the right hand

  437. of the Father Almighty

  438. and he pours out

  439. and from Father and Son

  440. proceed the Holy Spirit.

  441. The Holy Spirit

  442. acts in a different,

  443. a more powerful,

  444. more abundant way

  445. in the New Covenant

  446. than in the Old.

  447. The Spirit

  448. of Jesus Christ Himself

  449. with His people.

  450. And through the Spirit

  451. of Jesus Christ

  452. the Church receives

  453. a full provision

  454. of strength.

  455. The more I've thought

  456. about what this means,

  457. the Spirit of Christ

  458. poured out for the church.

  459. I've come to the conclusion,

  460. I'd love to hear

  461. your thoughts.

  462. The finished work

  463. of Jesus Christ

  464. is what secures

  465. the blessings

  466. that the church needs.

  467. So,

  468. the Spirit of Christ

  469. specifically has in view

  470. the active obedience

  471. of Christ

  472. on our behalf

  473. now applied to us

  474. as the energizing

  475. strength and power

  476. that we need

  477. to walk

  478. as His people.

  479. in other words,

  480. Jesus Christ

  481. came without

  482. any help.

  483. We have the Holy Spirit,

  484. the help,

  485. the provision,

  486. the supply,

  487. and Christ came

  488. without the curse of sin

  489. and with the help

  490. of the Holy Spirit

  491. but no help external,

  492. no help from any man.

  493. And He accomplished

  494. what we need.

  495. His life

  496. was tested

  497. and He proved

  498. powerfully

  499. in the flesh

  500. that all that God

  501. requires of righteousness

  502. He has fulfilled

  503. and He will now

  504. supply

  505. the righteousness

  506. that He accomplished

  507. in His life

  508. to the church

  509. to use all of our gifts

  510. for His glory.

  511. Paul had tasted this.

  512. He had experienced

  513. what this was.

  514. by His own flesh

  515. He was

  516. dragging out Christians

  517. throwing them

  518. into prison

  519. and beating them.

  520. He thought

  521. He was serving God

  522. according to His flesh.

  523. And now

  524. the opposite

  525. has happened.

  526. Paul is the one

  527. drug away

  528. undressively

  529. tried

  530. and thrown in prison.

  531. And where He is weak

  532. the Holy Spirit

  533. is strong.

  534. And in His weakness

  535. He's seen God

  536. minister to the

  537. Praetorian Guard

  538. to give Him

  539. an audience

  540. before Caesar himself

  541. and He's proclaiming

  542. the gospel

  543. of Christ

  544. in Rome.

  545. And how did He get there?

  546. What was the path?

  547. It was the path

  548. of the cross.

  549. It was strengthened

  550. by the Spirit

  551. of Christ

  552. that as He suffers

  553. and gets pressed

  554. lower and lower

  555. and lower

  556. and squeezed

  557. tighter and tighter

  558. more of Christ

  559. came out of Him

  560. for the glory of God.

  561. This is a hard thing

  562. for me to apply

  563. and encourage you with

  564. because

  565. we're a small enough

  566. congregation

  567. I know

  568. some of the hard things

  569. that our congregation

  570. is going through

  571. right now.

  572. But the same Holy Spirit

  573. that gave Paul

  574. this strength

  575. that Spirit

  576. dwells

  577. in every true believer.

  578. And because Christ

  579. is the one

  580. who has walked

  581. that path

  582. of the cross

  583. and it's the Spirit

  584. of Christ

  585. what you feel

  586. you are not strong

  587. enough to endure

  588. any longer

  589. the Spirit

  590. of Christ

  591. promises to supply

  592. you

  593. whatsoever

  594. God

  595. ordains

  596. for your life.

  597. And I know

  598. right now

  599. there are some

  600. hard things

  601. that our body

  602. is going through.

  603. To finish well

  604. you and I

  605. need prayers.

  606. We need to pray

  607. for one another

  608. and we need to pray

  609. specifically

  610. that God

  611. will supply

  612. the Spirit

  613. of Christ

  614. to one another

  615. in those hard trials

  616. we're enduring.

  617. Number four

  618. to finish well

  619. beware of your own

  620. weakness

  621. and fix

  622. your hope

  623. on God's grace.

  624. To finish well

  625. beware of your own

  626. weakness

  627. and fix your hope

  628. on God's grace.

  629. I believe that's what

  630. Paul does in verse 20.

  631. Paul says in verse 20

  632. according to my

  633. earnest expectation

  634. and hope

  635. Christ will be

  636. magnified.

  637. Let's look at these words

  638. earnest expectation

  639. it's to wait eagerly

  640. with your neck

  641. outstretched.

  642. You know what this is like

  643. if you've been around

  644. little kids

  645. and they haven't seen you

  646. for a while

  647. come up to that window

  648. and stretching the neck out

  649. just can't wait to see you

  650. when you're coming back.

  651. Earnest expectation

  652. that Christ

  653. will be magnified.

  654. What does that look

  655. in our lives

  656. to live a life

  657. earnestly expecting

  658. Christ to be magnified?

  659. Watching to see

  660. how he's going to do it next.

  661. Peeking out the window.

  662. I hear the story

  663. in a person's life

  664. I don't know

  665. what's going to come next.

  666. When the page turns

  667. what's the next chapter?

  668. How will it read?

  669. I don't know.

  670. I'm going to pray

  671. for the supply of the spirit

  672. and I'm going to earnestly

  673. expect it.

  674. I'm going to try

  675. to watch very carefully

  676. and see how Christ

  677. will magnify himself

  678. in what seems

  679. to be impossible.

  680. In the word hope

  681. confident faith

  682. that God will provide

  683. all that he

  684. has promised.

  685. See when your hope

  686. is in the grace of God

  687. you will never

  688. be disappointed.

  689. Grace has been

  690. the theme all along

  691. hasn't it?

  692. Paul keeps repeating

  693. the name of Jesus Christ

  694. and the grace of God.

  695. That's what he fixes

  696. his hope on

  697. and he will not

  698. be disappointed.

  699. The source of hope

  700. is fixed

  701. on Christ

  702. and his grace.

  703. Well I said

  704. to finish well

  705. you need to beware

  706. of your own weakness.

  707. See the first thing

  708. Paul says

  709. in verse 20

  710. is in the negative.

  711. He says

  712. it's my earnest

  713. expectation and hope

  714. that in nothing

  715. I shall be ashamed.

  716. In nothing

  717. I shall be ashamed.

  718. The word ashamed

  719. means disfigured.

  720. No matter what happens

  721. I don't want my face

  722. to get distorted.

  723. I don't want to get

  724. bent out of shape

  725. over whatever

  726. happens to me.

  727. And his real fear

  728. is that he would

  729. not bear witness

  730. faithfully

  731. of Christ.

  732. That he would

  733. disgrace

  734. his Savior

  735. in his final

  736. moment of testing.

  737. 1 Corinthians 2

  738. 23

  739. Paul wrote

  740. we preach

  741. Christ

  742. crucified

  743. to the Jews

  744. this is a

  745. stumbling block

  746. and to the Greeks

  747. it's foolishness.

  748. And here he is

  749. in the capital

  750. in Rome

  751. itself

  752. proclaiming

  753. Christ

  754. crucified

  755. knowing that

  756. to their ears

  757. this is utter

  758. foolishness.

  759. But in Romans

  760. 1 16

  761. Paul wrote

  762. I am not

  763. ashamed

  764. of the gospel

  765. it is the power

  766. of God

  767. to save.

  768. So we get

  769. this insight

  770. that from his letters

  771. Paul is very

  772. worried about this

  773. he knows it sounds

  774. like utter foolishness

  775. but yet

  776. the spirit

  777. helps him

  778. to not be ashamed

  779. and to continue

  780. proclaiming

  781. Christ

  782. and him

  783. crucified.

  784. To finish well

  785. beware

  786. of your own

  787. weakness.

  788. Paul does not

  789. want to bring shame

  790. to the glory

  791. of God

  792. he admits that

  793. to the congregation

  794. he asks for their

  795. prayers

  796. and he counts

  797. on them

  798. and then put

  799. positively

  800. to finish well

  801. we need to fix

  802. our hope

  803. on God's

  804. grace.

  805. That's what he

  806. says next

  807. he says

  808. with all boldness

  809. as always

  810. so now also

  811. I have confidence

  812. that he who began

  813. a gracious work

  814. in me

  815. will complete it

  816. until the day

  817. of Jesus Christ.

  818. We saw that

  819. earlier in Philippians

  820. in 2 Corinthians

  821. 12 9

  822. he said

  823. my grace

  824. the words of

  825. Jesus to Paul

  826. my grace

  827. is sufficient

  828. for you

  829. and in Hebrews

  830. 4 16

  831. he speaks

  832. of this boldness

  833. this confidence

  834. he says

  835. we go boldly

  836. to the throne

  837. of grace

  838. and we obtain

  839. mercy

  840. and find grace

  841. to help

  842. in time

  843. of need

  844. he's fixed

  845. his hope

  846. not on his own

  847. strength

  848. he's aware

  849. of his weakness

  850. but his hope

  851. is fixed

  852. on the grace

  853. of God

  854. in this life

  855. there's a battle

  856. this battle

  857. is described

  858. in Romans 17

  859. as the experience

  860. of every Christian

  861. I'm sorry

  862. Romans 7

  863. it's the battle

  864. between the remaining

  865. sin in our flesh

  866. and the battle

  867. between the spirit

  868. of God

  869. inside of us

  870. our confession

  871. says that

  872. in this war

  873. between your

  874. renewed spirit

  875. and the sin

  876. that lingers

  877. in your flesh

  878. although that

  879. remaining corruption

  880. for a time

  881. may much prevail

  882. and yet

  883. through the

  884. continual supply

  885. of strength

  886. from the

  887. sanctifying spirit

  888. of Christ

  889. the regenerate

  890. soul

  891. in your inner

  892. being

  893. does overcome

  894. and so who

  895. God's

  896. saints

  897. do grow

  898. in grace

  899. God perfects

  900. his holiness

  901. in you

  902. he energizes

  903. you to press

  904. after the heavenly

  905. life

  906. and to continue

  907. growing

  908. in evangelical

  909. obedience

  910. to all the

  911. commands

  912. which Christ

  913. as head

  914. and king

  915. in his word

  916. has prescribed

  917. to his people

  918. to finish well

  919. beware of your

  920. weakness

  921. this battle

  922. will not stop

  923. until you take

  924. your last breath

  925. but have confidence

  926. and fix your hope

  927. not on your strength

  928. but on the grace

  929. of God

  930. his grace

  931. his strength

  932. his energy

  933. will be with you

  934. till the very last day

  935. in the part

  936. of your soul

  937. that he has

  938. regenerated

  939. and he's working

  940. that out

  941. to the rest

  942. of your life

  943. that part

  944. will overcome

  945. by his grace

  946. my fifth

  947. and final heading

  948. is that to finish

  949. well in

  950. this life

  951. ask for that

  952. same grace

  953. to magnify

  954. Christ in you

  955. more and more

  956. you will finish

  957. well if you live

  958. by his grace

  959. more and more

  960. to magnify

  961. Christ

  962. in verse 20

  963. he says

  964. my prayer

  965. is that Christ

  966. will be magnified

  967. specifically

  968. he says

  969. in my body

  970. Paul had hopes

  971. of still visiting

  972. Spain

  973. he's going to

  974. continue to write

  975. letters from prison

  976. and he's going to

  977. continue praying

  978. for the advance

  979. of God's kingdom

  980. he's resolved

  981. these things

  982. however many days

  983. or years

  984. he has left

  985. so he's praying

  986. that Christ

  987. will be magnified

  988. in his body

  989. in Acts 20

  990. 24

  991. Paul said

  992. I do not

  993. count my life

  994. dear to myself

  995. so that I may

  996. finish the race

  997. with joy

  998. and the ministry

  999. which I have received

  1000. from the Lord Jesus

  1001. which is to testify

  1002. to the gospel

  1003. of the grace

  1004. of God

  1005. and he prays

  1006. that God

  1007. will be magnified

  1008. in his body

  1009. in life

  1010. so our life

  1011. is not our own

  1012. we belong

  1013. body and soul

  1014. to our faithful

  1015. Savior Jesus Christ

1016. and if he has you

  1017. alive

  1018. so that you can

  1019. magnify him

  1020. he stirs your heart

  1021. to think of someone

  1022. in the church

  1023. someone in your life

  1024. a loved one

  1025. who you need

  1026. to pray for

  1027. you need to ask

  1028. for the supply

  1029. of the spirit

  1030. for them

  1031. and he wants

  1032. to bring opportunities

  1033. for you to show

  1034. the love of Christ

  1035. and to tell others

  1036. of your Savior

  1037. who lives in you

  1038. you magnify Christ

  1039. by your life

  1040. but here Paul

  1041. is also very aware

  1042. that his death

  1043. might be around

  1044. the corner

  1045. most likely

  1046. when he says

  1047. that Christ

  1048. will be magnified

  1049. in my body

  1050. that's what he's

  1051. thinking the most

  1052. about right now

  1053. and he wants

  1054. the church to know

  1055. don't be anxious

  1056. about anything

  1057. dear church

  1058. if my head

  1059. rolls off

  1060. of my body

  1061. into that basket

  1062. you can know

  1063. that it came

  1064. off the body

  1065. of a rejoicing

  1066. man

  1067. who wants Christ

  1068. to be magnified

  1069. and that I'm

  1070. with him

  1071. Romans 6 5

  1072. says we have

  1073. already become

  1074. united with Christ

  1075. in the likeness

  1076. of his death

  1077. so every day

  1078. he gives us

  1079. to live and breathe

  1080. it's for his purpose

  1081. for his glory

  1082. to be magnified

  1083. in you

  1084. we don't fear

  1085. death

  1086. like the world

  1087. fears death

  1088. we're already

  1089. spiritually united

  1090. to Christ

  1091. in his death

  1092. and united to him

  1093. in his resurrection

  1094. I learned from

  1095. our congregation

  1096. this week

  1097. of a family

  1098. crippled by death

  1099. the thought of death

  1100. the anxiety

  1101. medication

  1102. unable to do

  1103. normal life activities

  1104. with such a fear

  1105. of death

  1106. such hopelessness

  1107. I love how

  1108. this Puritan

  1109. explained the contrast

  1110. Thomas Brooks

  1111. we should lament

  1112. over that dead man

  1113. or dead woman

  1114. whom hell

  1115. harbors

  1116. whom the devil

  1117. devours

  1118. whom divine justice

  1119. torments

  1120. we should lament

  1121. and we should be

  1122. earnest to proclaim

  1123. Christ

  1124. every soul

  1125. that God brings

  1126. into contact

  1127. with you

  1128. today and this week

  1129. is a soul

  1130. headed to heaven

  1131. or to hell

  1132. and Brooks

  1133. goes on to write

  1134. let us rejoice

  1135. that's the theme

  1136. of Paul's letter

  1137. let us rejoice

  1138. over those

  1139. departed believers

  1140. whom Christ

  1141. embosoms

  1142. and whom all

  1143. the court of heaven

  1144. comes forth

  1145. to welcome

  1146. let Christ

  1147. be magnified

  1148. in my body

1149. one way or the other

  1150. because we rejoice

  1151. when Christ

  1152. is magnified

  1153. that word

  1154. magnified

  1155. children

  1156. you've done

  1157. an experiment

  1158. we get like a

  1159. detective

  1160. piece of glass

  1161. that magnifies

  1162. whatever's on the other

  1163. side

  1164. you can look at

  1165. bugs up close

  1166. some of you

  1167. have have

  1168. doctorates

  1169. in the sciences

  1170. and you've looked

  1171. at microscopes

  1172. you spent hours

  1173. understanding

  1174. magnification

  1175. I thought about

  1176. how a magnifying

  1177. glass is never

  1178. the object

  1179. it's never

  1180. the focus

  1181. is it

  1182. the purpose

  1183. of a magnifying

  1184. glass is to

  1185. see

  1186. the true

  1187. object of

  1188. interest

  1189. through it

  1190. that that

  1191. would be

  1192. enlarged

  1193. and that the

  1194. glass would be

  1195. transparent

  1196. that Christ

  1197. be magnified

  1198. in my body

  1199. for Christ

  1200. is the head

  1201. and his church

  1202. is his body

  1203. and if we live

  1204. we live in Christ

  1205. in Christ

  1206. we move

  1207. and we have

  1208. our being

  1209. we as a

  1210. as a church

  1211. as a congregation

  1212. we should be

  1213. that way

  1214. we should be

  1215. transparent

  1216. so that when

  1217. people look

  1218. they don't see

  1219. anything of man

  1220. they see Christ

  1221. magnified

  1222. through this

  1223. little body

  1224. we are a glass

  1225. through which

  1226. Christ reveals

  1227. himself to

  1228. others

  1229. and that's

  1230. why we're

  1231. alive still

  1232. there's an

  1233. old hymn

  1234. that goes

  1235. like this

  1236. I serve

  1237. a risen

  1238. savior

  1239. he's in

  1240. the world

  1241. today

  1242. I know

  1243. that he

  1244. is living

  1245. whatever

  1246. men may
