  1. All right, good morning. We are on our fifth mountain and

  2. I'm not going to review those, the ones we've done already, but

  3. we had the mount of temptation last week and hopefully that was

  4. a blessing to you and and you learned something from it.

  5. We're going to look at another one today that is not a it's,

  6. it's what we call a mount, but it's not a, this particular

  7. mountain is not a the name of the mountain, but we're going to

  8. look at the mount of Transfiguration this morning.

  9. Does anybody now this is Sunday school, so we got to, we're

  10. going to think, I know it's early, but we're going to think

  11. a little bit here. Does anybody know what they

  12. consider which mountain is considered the mount of

  13. Transfiguration? What is the actual physical

  14. mountain? Does anybody know?

  15. There's two of them that people go back and forth and we're not

  16. going to argue about that. But anybody, Trey?

  17. No good guess though. Nope.

  18. Good guess though, kind of kind of not real real popular ones.

  19. Mount Hermon and Mount Tabor. And the Bible doesn't actually

  20. tell us which one it is 'cause we'll we'll go there and we'll

  21. read it here in just a second. Excuse me, but the Bible doesn't

  22. tell us which mountain they actually went up.

  23. It just says they went up on a high mountain.

  24. And but I want you to think about this because this is

  25. important to our lesson. Another, another thinking

  26. question. Where in Jesus ministry did this

  27. amount of transfiguration happen roughly beginning and middle?

  28. Anybody have any idea? And I did, I purposely didn't

  29. give you the the passage because it'll give you where it's at.

  30. It's in the middle. Yeah, it's, it's in the

  31. beginning middle. I would say that the, the, the,

  32. the, the end of the first half, maybe all right, that's the

  33. amount of transfiguration. So now knowing that, let's go to

  34. Matthew chapter 17. And that's where we're going to,

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  35. we're going to start there. We're going to read this

  36. passage. There's actually three different

  37. places that it's that is talked about in the in Matthew, Mark

  38. and Luke. And we are going to go look at

  39. those because those are very important to our lesson as well.

  40. But we'll look at those as we go through it.

  41. But we're going to start with Matthew chapter 17 and read this

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  42. passage. And then we'll we'll talk about

  43. the amount of transfiguration. But I think now this goes

  44. without saying, it's very important to the Jews.

  45. There was 3 positions that were very important to them, the

  46. prophet, the priest, and a king, right?

  47. I think, I think we would all agree on that.

  48. Remember when Saul becomes king, they are begging for it.

  49. They want a king. We want to be like other

  50. nations. So the king, the king, position

  51. of king was important to them, but the position of prophet and

  52. priest was very important because God said it was.

  53. And so they took that seriously and it was important to them.

  54. And what happens here on the Mount of Transfiguration, we'll

  55. see it in just a second is as we read Matthew 17 is I think it's

  56. important that it happened right here in the middle of his of his

  57. ministry. It wasn't at the beginning

  58. because Jesus was still calling his disciples and everything

  59. else, and it wasn't at the end as a final proof of who he was.

  60. It was in the middle to show them.

  61. See in Matthew chapter 16, Jesus tells them I'm going to die and

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  62. I'm going to be resurrected. And they don't understand it.

  63. They're, they're confused by what's happening.

  64. I'll, I'll destroy this temple and rebuild it in three days.

  65. Even his disciples were confused as to what he was trying to say.

  66. And so the next thing, the next chapter here in Matthew 17, we

  67. have Jesus, I think I believe finally going, OK, I need to, I

  68. need to prove to my own disciples who I actually am so

  69. that they really get behind this, not because I need them,

  70. but be, but I need them to spread this gospel.

  71. And if they don't believe it after I go, who's going to be

  72. left to spread this? And so I think Jesus is is

  73. obviously under the direction of the Holy Spirit has this this

  74. mount of transfiguration experience to show Peter, James

  75. and John what's really going on with his ministry.

  76. You got to remember, even after Jesus dies, the disciples think

  77. he's going to resurrect and start his earthly Kingdom.

  78. They still just didn't understand exactly what was

  79. going on. But let's read Matthew chapter

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  80. 17. We're going to start right here

  81. in verse one and there's a the first, the third word here is

  82. important after six days. So we'll come back to that

  83. later. But after six days, Jesus taketh

  84. Peter, James and John his brother and bringeth them up

  85. into an high mountain apart six days from what?

  86. From this time that Jesus had done some of these works and and

  87. you have to read verse chapter 16 to see what he's talking

  88. about. But Peter's saying six days

  89. after that, he takes Peter, James and John his brother, and

  90. bringeth them up into a high mountain apart.

  91. And again, it doesn't mention which mountain it is.

  92. So it's all left to speculation. And was transfigured before

  93. them. And his face did shine as the

  94. sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

  95. And we're going to come back to verse 2 here in a minute.

  96. That's very important as well. And behold, there appeared unto

  97. them Moses and Elias talking with them.

  98. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for

  99. us to be here, if thou wilt, let us make here 3 tabernacles, one

  100. for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias, while he yet

  101. spake. Behold, a bright cloud

  102. overshadowed them. And behold a voice out of the

  103. cloud, which said, This is my beloved son, in whom I am well

  104. pleased, Hear ye him. And when the disciples heard it,

  105. they fell on their face, and were so afraid.

  106. And Jesus came and touched them and said, Arise and be not

  107. afraid. And when they lifted up their

  108. eyes, they saw no man save Jesus only.

  109. And then it continues on. They came down from the

  110. mountain. Jesus charged them, saying, tell

  111. this vision to no man until the Son of man be risen again from

  112. the dead. And his disciples asked him,

  113. saying, why then say the scribes that Elias must first come and

  114. and then they start asking him what exactly happened?

  115. But I think it's interesting I've always thought in verse 4,

  116. you see then answered Peter and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is

  117. good for us to be here if thou wilt let us make 3 tabernacles,

  118. one for thee, one for Moses and one for Elias.

  119. And that's just kind of drops in there.

  120. Doesn't really make sense what that verse.

  121. Why? Why is he even saying why is

  122. Peter saying that? But it's interesting.

  123. I think it's Luke. No, it's Mark that says, because

  124. Peter was so afraid and didn't know what else to say, he asked

  125. Jesus that. So he literally it really

  126. doesn't fit and there's no reason for it.

  127. And but that's what happened. Peter was so afraid.

  128. He just starts talking kind of in typical Peter fashion.

  129. So I think that's interesting that he just starts spouting and

  130. Luke actually calls him out on it.

  131. He didn't know or Mark, he didn't know what else to say.

  132. So he just started talking and asked Jesus to build a build a

  133. Tabernacle there. But then then God himself says,

  134. this is my beloved son. Listen to him.

  135. Listen what he has to say. And so anyway, we are going to

  136. look at the Mount of Transfiguration this morning,

  137. the Mount of preview, the mount of what was coming.

  138. And even in His earthly ministry, remember, this is not

  139. at the end. This is still in the middle of

  140. His ministry. So it's a preview of what was

  141. going to happen. And then also after his

  142. resurrection, His kingship, what was going to happen with that?

  143. He needed to show the disciples that on the Mount of

  144. Transfiguration. So let's pray and then we'll get

  145. right into this lesson. Father, thank you for this day

  146. you've given us. Got to thank you for another

  147. opportunity. We have to open your word and to

  148. learn from it. Got to pray that you would feed

  149. us from your word for that we would look at this, this story,

  150. this, this happening in, in, in history and your earthly

  151. ministry. And it would just shore up in

  152. our minds and, and just give us even more confidence in the fact

  153. that we are worshiping the true Son of God, the Messiah that

  154. came to save his people from their sin.

  155. And I pray that you would just give us even more confidence

  156. through this of what was actually going on with your son

  157. here on this earth in Jesus name, I pray, Amen.

  158. So we're going to look at the the account of Matthew, the

  159. account of Mark and the account of Luke.

  160. They all have little bit different words in how they

  161. describe this light that came on Jesus Christ.

  162. And, and I think it's important the difference is there because

  163. Matthew shows Jesus Christ as a prophet in the way he he talks.

  164. And we'll look at that first and then the other two look at him

  165. as priest and king. And we'll look at, that's what

  166. we're going to look at this morning in these lessons.

  167. The prophet, priest and kingship of Jesus Christ previewed here

  168. in the Mount of Transfiguration. All right, so first of all,

  169. Matthew looks at Jesus Christ, a preview of his work as prophet

  170. and go to verse 2 of Matthew 17. I said verse 2 was very

  171. important. And it's these words, these

  172. phrases that we're going to look at it says and was transfigured

  173. before them. And his face did shine as the

  174. sun and his raiment was white as the light.

  175. And I think it's interesting, the very next verse says that

  176. that that Moses appears and Moses also had this same thing

  177. happened on the mountain, right? That his face shone as the light

  178. to where they couldn't even they couldn't even look at look on

  179. him. But I looked this up and I

  180. wanted to read it real quick. It's it's a short where am I at

  181. all tabs? There we go.

  182. I looked it up and I saved it. All right, so this is this is I

  183. want to read this real fast about the I might have deleted

  184. it. I sure did.

  185. OK, here we go. The high mountain that we call

  186. the mount of transfiguration is never clearly identified in

  187. scripture. That's not the one I wanted to

  188. read. I know where it's at.

  189. Hold on, it's out of my study Bible, but I didn't want to

  190. bring both Bibles. Here we go.

  191. So this is Scofield's words on on Christ's transfiguration.

  192. He says the transfiguration scene contains in miniature all

  193. the elements of the future Kingdom in manifestation, the

  194. Lord Jesus, not in humiliation. So this is the first part of of

  195. this scene. The Lord Jesus not in

  196. humiliation, but in glory. Remember his whole, his whole

  197. earthly ministry is, is is is is a ministry of, yes, setting up

  198. the gospel and all of that, but a ministry of humility.

  199. He is not able to show them who he truly is.

  200. Even on the cross. They're mocking him saying if

  201. you're truly God, if you're Christ, come down off that

  202. cross. And he could have, but in

  203. humility and in the, the need for redemption of mankind, he

  204. stays on that cross and, and dies with the mocking of all

  205. these people. But here on the Mount of

  206. Transfiguration, his, his true glory is shown just for a little

  207. bit. It's not, it's you see how long

  208. the passage is? It's not very long, but the Lord

  209. Jesus not in humiliation, but in glory here on the mount of

  210. Transfiguration, Moses in glory, the representative of the

  211. redeemed who have passed through death into the Kingdom already.

  212. So that's what Moses is doing there.

  213. And this is this is Scofield's notes.

  214. And then thirdly, Elijah also in glory, but representative of the

  215. redeemed who have entered the Kingdom by translation, not very

  216. many of those, but a few. And then we have Peter, James

  217. and John, not glorified yet, but representative for the moment of

  218. Israel in the flesh, in the future Kingdom.

  219. And then lastly, it's the multitude at the foot of the

  220. mountain, representative of those who are going to be

  221. brought into the Kingdom after it's established over Israel.

  222. So very much a preview of what was coming.

  223. That's what the mount of figuration was.

  224. And it's kind of an interesting passage because it just drops in

  225. there. It's a couple verses long and

  226. then that's it. We don't really hear anything

  227. else about it, but it was a preview to the disciples of what

  228. was coming. And so back to our lesson,

  229. Matthew chapter 17 and verse 2, we see Jesus being previewed as

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  230. a prophet. And, and Peter or Matthew uses

  231. those words. His face shines as the sun and

  232. his raiment was white as the light.

  233. And so the, the, the word we're going to focus there on is

  234. white. And the other ones don't have

  235. this, but white. He's reminding us of the task of

  236. a prophet and his, his job was to carry the, the light of the

  237. truth through the ages. Really, they're prophesying of

  238. what's going to come. We see that in Jeremiah and

  239. Isaiah and in all the other prophets.

  240. They are carrying this truth sometimes alone, sometimes the

  241. only ones, they're the only ones doing it even have Elijah doing

  242. that, the only one carrying this light, the least that he thought

  243. standing alone, but carrying the light of the gospel that was to

  244. come and and Hebrews chapter 1 tells us that that's exactly

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  245. what Christ's job was. He says, I'll read it.

  246. God, who has sundry times and in diverse manners spake in time

  247. past unto the fathers by the prophets, but hath in these last

  248. days spoken unto us by his Son. He is the final prophet that

  249. that we see. And so Jesus Christ was the

  250. prophet that was previewed here, Luke chapter 24, verse 19.

    Luke 24:19

  251. I'll read this one as well concerning Jesus of Nazareth,

  252. which was a prophet mighty indeed and word before God and

  253. all the all the people. That's Luke's, Luke's Speaking

  254. of Jesus Christ as the prophet. So what did this prophet teach?

  255. And I'm just going to make mention of this and we're going

  256. to move through this pretty quickly because this is an

  257. overview. We're not digging real deep into

  258. the mount of Transfiguration. But what, what was Jesus

  259. teaching? And we see this in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  260. chapter 5 through 7. He taught in sermons.

  261. We also see it with the Olivet Discourse in Matthew chapter 24

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  262. and 25 S Jesus did teach by way of sermons, but he also taught

  263. by way of parables. And that's what the prophets

  264. did. They taught they they told of

  265. things to come and what was going on.

  266. But Jesus was doing exactly that through all the parables, right.

  267. Parables are earthly stories with heavenly meanings.

  268. And that's why so often the the the disciples even were after he

  269. would tell it. You know, it kind of makes me

  270. think of, you know, sometimes us sitting in church.

  271. Hey man, yes, yes, and then afterwards going, what were you

  272. talking about? That's what the disciples were

  273. doing. They're they're, they're

  274. agreeing. I mean, they're sitting there

  275. listening to the parables just as everybody else.

  276. And then afterwards Bible even gives us a record of that.

  277. They would go to him and say, what were you, what were you

  278. trying to say there? What was the meaning of that?

  279. And Jesus often would say, you have little faith or you have

  280. little understanding. How do you not understand what

  281. I'm trying to say? But they were earthly stories.

  282. So they got that part with heavenly meanings and they

  283. didn't always catch those, but that's how Jesus taught as a

  284. prophet when he was here in His earthly ministry.

  285. But then what did the people think of him as this prophet?

  286. Well, John Chapter 7 and verse 40, this is after Jesus talks

    John 7 chapter mention

  287. about the living water. It says of a truth, John Chapter

    John 7:40

  288. 7, verse 40 of a truth. This is the prophet when the

  289. widow's son was raised to life. Again, we see that in Luke

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  290. Chapter 7, the people said a great prophet is risen up among

  291. us in Matthew chapter 21, Palm Sunday, the multitude is

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  292. shouting Hosanna to to God in the highest and but they said

  293. this is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

  294. So the people knew he was a prophet and the amount of

  295. transfiguration Jesus was showing his disciples.

  296. A little quick preview. I'm I am a prophet and this is

  297. what is coming. But then we see what Jesus

  298. worked as a prophet. What was his goal as a prophet?

  299. What was the goal of all of the prophets?

  300. Think about Jeremiah and Isaiah, what was their purpose?

  301. Does anybody actually I'm asking this question, what was the

  302. purpose of Jeremiah, Isaiah, Hosea?

  303. What was their purpose as a prophet?

  304. Just to prophecy things coming, very big part of it to bring

  305. them back to God. And so in saying that bringing

  306. them back to God, obviously what was wrong, they were away from

  307. God. So the goal of these prophets is

  308. to show them their sin and then say show them there is a way

  309. back to reconcile with God. Well, that's exactly what Jesus

  310. says. But think of the woman at the

  311. well. She talks to Jesus.

  312. We know that story. He says if you drink of this

  313. living water, you'll never thirst again.

  314. And then he says go get your husband.

  315. What was his point in saying that?

  316. To mock her, to make her feel bad?

  317. His point in saying that was to show her you're in sin and you

  318. need this water that I'm that I'm talking about.

  319. But you are in sin and you've had five husbands and the one

  320. you're with now is not your husband.

  321. And what's her response? John chapter 4, verse 19.

    John 4:19

  322. Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet because the goal of the

  323. prophets, and I'll read this in Isaiah chapter 58 verse one, cry

    Isaiah 58 chapter mention

  324. aloud, spare not lift up thy voice like a trumpet and show my

  325. people their transgressions and the House of Jacob their sins.

  326. That is the goal of a prophet and Jesus Christ fulfills

  327. exactly that role. Here in the New Testament, John

    John 4 chapter mention

  328. chapter 4, we see that. Sir, I perceive that thou art a

  329. prophet. Why?

  330. Because you're pointing out my sin and trying to lead me back

  331. to Jesus Christ. And so in the light of the

  332. perfection of the Son of God here in the New Testament, the

  333. sinful state of Israel was, was very obvious and they knew it.

  334. It's one of the reasons they crucified Christ.

  335. They did not like that he was pointing out their sin when they

  336. thought they were so spiritual and they were so righteous.

  337. And, and so they accused Christ of blasphemy and they, and they

  338. crucify him, but it's because he was pointing out their sin and

  339. their need for this Savior, which they didn't think they

  340. needed. And they certainly didn't think

  341. Jesus Christ was that one that was going to point them in that

  342. direction. So we see Jesus Christ previewed

  343. as a prophet in Matthew chapter 17.

    Matthew 17 chapter mention

  344. I want you to go to Mark Chapter 9.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  345. This is another, another account of the transfiguration, Mark

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  346. Chapter 9. And we're going to see Jesus

  347. previewed as the priest, prophet, priest.

  348. And then in Luke we'll look at him as king.

  349. But mark Chapter 9 and verse, we'll start in verse one.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  350. And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, that there be some

  351. of them that stand here which shall not taste of death till

  352. they have seen the Kingdom of God come with power.

  353. And again verse 2, after six days that's important.

  354. Jesus taketh with him. Peter and James and John.

  355. And I like this account because we'll see some more details.

  356. Peter, James and John and leaded them up into a high mountain

  357. apart by themselves, and he was transfigured before them.

  358. And his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow, so as

  359. no fuller on earth can white them.

  360. And there appeared unto them Elias with Moses, and they were

  361. talking with Jesus. And Peter answered and said to

  362. Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here and let us make 3

  363. tabernacles, one for Thee, one for Moses, and one for Elias.

  364. Verse 6 This is where Luke Mark calls him out for he wished not

  365. what to say, for they were so afraid.

  366. He's so scared I don't know what to say.

  367. So he just starts talking. That's what I was referring to

  368. before. But verse 7.

  369. And there was a cloud that overshadowed them.

  370. And a voice came out of the cloud saying, this is my beloved

  371. son, hear him. And suddenly when they had

  372. looked around about, they saw no man anymore save Jesus, only

  373. with themselves. And again in verse 9, Jesus

  374. charges them as they came down from the mountain.

  375. He charged them that they should tell no man what things they had

  376. seen till the Son of man were risen from the dead.

  377. And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with

  378. another what the rising from the dead should mean.

  379. I think it's it's interesting there another little phrase.

  380. They don't quite understand what is going on here.

  381. But in Mark he previews Jesus Christ through this

  382. transfiguration as the priest. And what I want to point out

  383. here is in verse 3, remember I said verse 2, white as light is

  384. what Matthew talks about. But in Mark he says in verse 3,

  385. his raiment became shining, exceeding white as snow, so as

  386. no fuller on earth can white them.

  387. So a little bit different description of what he's seeing,

  388. same same picture, but a little different description.

  389. He says his his garment became white as snow, so no fuller on

  390. earth could white them. It's a word we don't really

  391. hear, but through the context we can kind of we kind of

  392. understand what it is. What was a fuller?

  393. They had one job that was to clean garments and to make them

  394. white. But I think it's interesting and

  395. and we see this through history, really through not so much the

  396. Bible, but mostly through history that the fullers all

  397. worked outside of the city. And the main reason was we think

  398. of soap as being this, you know, clean smelling.

  399. It's funny. I just told my wife, she she's

  400. really, really been focusing on all the chemicals and different

  401. things that we, we, you know, put in our bodies, but also that

  402. we have outside our bodies that we come in contact with.

  403. And one of those is the soap and, and what, what's the other

  404. stuff that smells real good? That what is it?

  405. Yeah, the softener. You tell how much I do laundry,

  406. but the softener is, you know, it's a lot of chemicals, but it

  407. makes your clothes smell good. And I said, and I told her the

  408. other day, I said, put a little bit of that in it.

  409. If you have to wash my clothes by themselves, put that in my my

  410. work clothes. Because when you sweat in them

  411. all day long, you just can't get them clean.

  412. And then after a few weeks you start smelling them.

  413. So anyways, so she started doing that for me.

  414. But we think of soap nowadays as all that's going to get them

  415. smelling good. Not then the goal of soap was to

  416. clean, not necessarily to smell good.

  417. And the fuller's works smelled so bad from the alkaline and

  418. things that they used that they pushed them out of the city and

  419. said get out and do your workout outside the city.

  420. Well, I think if you're if you're thinking in in respect to

  421. Jesus Christ, Christ was crucified outside the city.

  422. So I think it's interesting that Mark says that as white as snow,

  423. so as no fuller on earth could have whited these garments that

  424. way. That's what he's saying in

  425. Malachi chapter 3, verse two, he mentioned that he speaking

    Malachi 3 chapter mention

  426. prophetically of Christ, he is like a refiner's fire and like

  427. fuller's soap. So he's even referred to as or

  428. or or likened to a fuller's soap in Malachi.

  429. And I think it's interesting that Mark brings that up again.

  430. And it's very, very few times that we actually see that word

  431. in the Bible, let alone in the New Testament.

  432. But fuller so anyway, so that was the that was the work of of

  433. these fullers and that was the similarity that we see with

  434. Christ and a fuller. But I think it's interesting in

  435. verse 3 right there at the end. So as no fuller on earth can

  436. wipe them. What he's saying is fullers do

  437. good work. They make these garments white,

  438. but these were whiter than anything anybody on earth could

  439. have could have done. And I think it's important to

  440. note then that Jesus Christ, as the priest previewed here on the

  441. Mount of Transfiguration was going to be better than anything

  442. they had at the time, any priest.

  443. They had a physical priest here on earth.

  444. Isaiah chapter one, verse 18 says this.

  445. Come now and let us reason together.

  446. Say it. The Lord, though your sins be a

  447. scarlet, they shall be white as snow.

  448. Exact phrase that Mark uses there.

  449. Though they be read like Crimson, they shall be as well.

  450. You got to think these men, these disciples, when they are

  451. talking about reading the law and and reading God's word,

  452. anytime that's mentioned this, they have the Old Testament.

  453. They did, they were the ones writing the New Testament.

  454. They don't have this. So when you see those phrases

  455. referred back to and then things like that, they knew God's word.

  456. They knew the word that they had, they knew the law.

  457. And so you'll see that often in their writings and, and we

  458. think, oh, wow, that's the same phrase.

  459. It's because they knew the word of God and they're using those

  460. phrases from what they know in their walk with with God.

  461. But anyways, Isaiah says that they shall be white as snow,

  462. though they be red like Crimson, they shall be as wool.

  463. And so but the superiority of Jesus Christ is is seen there so

  464. as no fuller on earth could wipe them.

  465. He was going to be priests. That was the preview here, but

  466. he was going to be better priest than the final priest or the

  467. final sacrifice. And he says that in Hebrews

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  468. chapter 1, every priest standeth daily ministering and offering

  469. oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.

  470. But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins

  471. forever sat down in the right hand of God.

  472. And then for by one offering he hath perfected forever them that

  473. are sanctified. So this, these priests that

  474. we're, we're sacrificing for sins and, and doing what they

  475. were supposed to do, but very, very, very much not able to take

  476. away the sins of these people. That's why they had to keep

  477. doing it over and over and over and over.

  478. And that's what Hebrews is saying.

  479. You, you sacrificed often. But now this final, this priest

  480. that that we saw that we see in the Mount of Transfiguration,

  481. this priest is going to offer one time forever for all the

  482. sins and then sit down at the right hand of God for by one

  483. offering he hath perfected forever them that are

  484. sanctified. And I think that's why it's so

  485. important that you know, when when we are out talking with

  486. people. We were out at VCU yesterday

  487. handing out Flyers and we knock on doors and we talk to people.

  488. We get to see where they where they at are at in their minds of

  489. how they're going to get to heaven or where they're at in

  490. their walk with Christ. And very often it is works.

  491. That's what the sacrificial system was.

  492. It was works. And the whole point of it was to

  493. show them you can't. It is not sufficient for what

  494. you need for your sins in Jesus Christ as as he's compared here

  495. to the priest goes outside the city walls just like the

  496. fuller's on Gogotha and cleanses for once and for all man sin but

  497. but cleaner than any priest or any fuller could ever get their

  498. their clothes and I think they would have understood that.

  499. But if not, that's what this preview was.

  500. And then thirdly, go to Luke Chapter 9, Luke Chapter 9 in

Luke 9 chapter mention Luke 9 chapter mention

  501. math in Mark and Luke the the transfiguration is even earlier

  502. in their account of the gospel of Jesus Christ, but Matthew is

  503. in 17. Mark and Luke are both in

  504. Chapter 9, but go to Luke, Luke Chapter 9 and verse 28 and you

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  505. can see how similar these accounts are.

  506. Remember in Mark our account starts in verse 2, but in verse

  507. one of Mark Chapter 9 that it's the same verse in 27.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  508. But I tell you the truth, there be some standing here which

  509. shall not taste of death till they see the Kingdom of God.

  510. Very, very, very similar accounts of what's happening

  511. with the gospel in these three men, but just from a different,

  512. different perspective. But in verse 28 of Chapter 9 of

  513. Luke, it says it came to pass about an 8 days after these

  514. sayings he took Peter and John and James and went up into a

  515. mountain to pray. And as he prayed, the fashion of

  516. his countenance was altered and his raiment was white and

  517. blistering. And behold, there talked with

  518. him two men, which were Moses and Elias, who appeared in glory

  519. and spake of the deceased, which he should accomplish at

  520. Jerusalem. This is interesting.

  521. This is a little bit different. Look at this story.

  522. So he tells us that that the model transfiguration happened.

  523. But verse 32 Peter and they that were with him, which we know was

  524. James and John were heavy with sleep.

  525. And when they were awake, they saw his glory and the two men

  526. that stood with him. So they're asleep again on this

  527. mountain. I don't know what it is about

  528. them sleeping. They're sleeping in Yosemite now

  529. they're asleep on this mountain and when they wake up, they wake

  530. up to Jesus, Moses and Elijah talking about his death and

  531. resurrection. That's pretty interesting.

  532. We don't see that in Matthew and Mark, but that's what we see

  533. here in in verse 30. And behold, there talked with

  534. him two men, which which were Moses and Elias, who appeared in

  535. glory and spoke of his decease, which he should accomplish at

  536. Jerusalem. Jerusalem.

  537. And then Peter, James and John wake up to that.

  538. And verse 33 it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter

  539. said unto Jesus, Master, it's good for us to be here.

  540. Let us make 3 tabernacles, one for thee, one for Moses, and one

  541. for Elias, not knowing what he said.

  542. So again doesn't know what to say.

  543. So he just, he's just talking. While he thus spake, there came

  544. a cloud and overshadowed them, and they feared as they entered

  545. into the cloud. And there came a voice out of

  546. the cloud saying, This is my beloved son, hear him.

  547. And when the voice was passed, Jesus was found alone, and they

  548. kept it close and told man, no man in those days of those

  549. things which they had seen. So same same account, but a

  550. little bit different look. And what I want to see here is

  551. in verse 29. As he prayed, the fashion of his

  552. countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and

  553. glistering. This is also interesting.

  554. We don't see this phrase really anywhere else in the Bible

  555. either. White and glistering.

  556. I'm going to get to that in just a second.

  557. I wanted to talk about this eight days, and I just got a few

  558. minutes, but this 8 days compared to the six, the other

  559. two we're talking about. And does anybody know what the

  560. number six is in the Bible? I think we and the number of

  561. men, right? We see that in Revelation.

  562. We see that all over the place. That's the number of men.

  563. Does anybody know what the number 8 means or is symbolic

  564. of? No, that's seven.

  565. Yeah. What is 8 redemption?

  566. It is the number of new beginnings.

  567. And I think this is really interesting, the number of new

  568. beginnings. And so you know, it's not, I

  569. want to, I want to address this too.

  570. Was it 6 days or was it 8 days? Well, I think Matthew and Mark

  571. are just saying, OK, this day and then there was six days in

  572. between and then the amount of transfiguration, I think Luke

  573. takes the day before and the day of the mount transfiguration and

  574. adds those two to the 6th. There's definitely six days from

  575. whatever they're going from to the mount of Transfiguration.

  576. And I think that Luke just adds the the the book ends and makes

  577. it 8 days. But I also think it's important

  578. because it's a number of new beginnings. 8 is think about

  579. this and these are these are somebody else's numbers.

  580. But I do think it's interesting the, the number 8 is the number

  581. of beginnings on the calendar. The 8th day marks the beginning

  582. of a new week, right? So you have 7 days.

  583. The 8th day is a new week. In music.

  584. The eighth note marks the beginning of a new octave,

  585. right? In Jewish history, David was the

  586. eighth son of his father, and his reign marked the beginning

  587. of a new dynasty in Israel. The resurrection of Christ

  588. occurred on Sunday, the 8th day, the beginning of a new week, and

  589. marked a new beginning on the calendar of eternity in

  590. eternity. In contrast to the number of 6,

  591. which is the number of ants. So I think, you know, I've said

  592. this before, I don't hang my hat too much on numerology, but I

  593. think it is interesting that that Luke happens to say 8 days

  594. and he is previewing Christ as king, which is a whole entirely

  595. new beginning. And we're going to finish with

  596. this though. But in in verse 29, as he

  597. prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered and his

  598. raiment was white and glistering in Greek.

  599. This white and glistering is is translated from one single Greek

  600. word. And I'm not going to try to

  601. pronounce it, but it means to flash out as lightning.

  602. It's the only place we see it in the Bible.

  603. But it to flash out as lightning in Matthew chapter 24 and verse

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  604. 27, it says, for as the lightning cometh out of the east

  605. and shineth even under the West, so shall also the sun, the so

  606. shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

  607. So I think a very interesting phrase there that that Luke uses

  608. different than Mark and Matthew, but white and glistering,

  609. talking about like a flash of lightning like that's that's

  610. what in his mind that this whiteness of the raiments of

  611. Jesus Christ was like a flash of lightning.

  612. But Matthew Matthew talks about that there in chapter 24.

  613. But this helps us to understand the final piece of prophet,

  614. priest and king that was beast was so important to the Jewish

  615. people as prophet Christ reveals the sinfulness of mankind,

  616. right. We we talked about that as

  617. priest, he provides the means of cleansing the sin and the stain

  618. and makes their hearts whiter than snow.

  619. We see that Jesus Christ outside the the gates dies on the cross

  620. and their sins are as scarlet, but they can be made as white as

  621. snow. But then one day as king, Christ

  622. will return to earth to rule and reign in a Kingdom which has no

  623. sin. And it's we're, we're done just

  624. because of time. But that's the part we have yet

  625. to see. We've seen him as prophet, we've

  626. seen him as priest. And we, we will get to in the

  627. Bible, but we will get to see him as king reigning over the

  628. entire earth. And we see that in in Revelation

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  629. chapter 2, Psalm chapter 2, we see that the kingdoms of the

    Psalms 2 chapter mention

  630. earth will bow their knee to Jesus Christ.

  631. And this mount of transfiguration is a preview of

  632. those things that were coming, prophet and priest.

  633. We already saw they were a preview of what was coming in

  634. the life of Christ here on this earth.

  635. But the king that Luke talks about, this flash of lightning,

  636. we're going to see that in the in, in, in in the entire or, or

  637. after Christ comes back to this earth to reign as king.

  638. And I'm excited about that. And I hope you are as well.

  639. But John chapter 1 and verse 14. And we'll close with this verse.

    John 1 chapter mention

  640. And the word was made flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his

  641. glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of

  642. grace and truth. And the disciples didn't quite

  643. understand it. So he has the amount of

  644. transfiguration to to show them and just shore up.

  645. And then he tells them, don't tell anybody you saw this until

  646. I until I die and resurrected and I go then you can start

  647. talking about this, but I don't want anybody to know about it

  648. until then. Interesting that he says that.

  649. But anyways, that's a lesson for another time.

  650. Let's pray and we will be finished with Sunday School.

  651. Father, I thank you for this day you've given us.

  652. Got to thank you for the time we have here to open your word.

  653. Got to pray that this lesson would have been one that your

  654. people could understand. And I pray that it would just

  655. just give us a confidence as I prayed before God in in your son

  656. and in the Messiah, in the Savior that we trust and that we

  657. worship as the sacrifice for our sins.

  658. And I got to just pray that you bless this next hour as pastor

  659. preaches, fill them with your power and speak to our hearts.

  660. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
