  1. the book of Philippians only has four little chapters,

  2. and today we finish chapter one, about a quarter of the book.

  3. I have to admit, this is a favorite for me, this little book.

  4. What a joy it's been to just to watch God do what he does,

  5. you know, take his living, active word

  6. and let it cut our hearts day after day, week after week.

  7. So I'm very encouraged once again today

  8. by seeing your faces, seeing us back here together

  9. under God's word and the time in Sunday school

  10. and now to study his word together.

  11. So I'm gonna read our sermon text for today.

  12. It's Philippians chapter one, verses 27 through 30.

  13. And I read this believing it's God's inspired,

  14. inerrant, infallible, clear and sufficient word.

  15. It's God's very own word for you.

  16. When I'm done reading, I'll say,

  17. this is the word of the Lord.

  18. If you believe that, you can respond.

  19. Thanks be to God.

  20. Philippians 1, 27.

  21. Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ,

  22. so that whether I come and see you or am absent,

  23. I may hear of your affairs,

  24. that you stand fast in one spirit with one mind,

  25. striving together for the faith of the gospel.

  26. And not in any way terrified by your adversaries,

  27. which is to them a proof of perdition,

  28. but to you of salvation and that from God.

  29. Verse 29.

  30. For to you it has been granted on behalf of Christ,

  31. not only to believe in him,

  32. but also to suffer for his sake,

  33. having the same conflict which you saw in me,

  34. and now here is in me.

  35. The word of the Lord.

  36. You may be seated.

  37. The grass withers, the flower fades,

  38. but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  39. Let's pray.

  40. God, we ask that your Holy Spirit

  41. will illumine your word to your people today.

  42. We praise you for this active, ongoing ministry

  43. of the Holy Spirit,

  44. the Spirit of Christ,

  45. the living God,

  46. who dwells in your people,

  47. who breathed out every word of the Bible,

  48. and who now in a special way,

  49. mysteriously,

  50. illumines the meaning

  51. in a way that builds up,

  52. that edifies your body

  53. for your glory and for our good.

  54. You are so faithful, Lord.

  55. We ask that by your grace,

  56. you'll do this once again,

  57. out of love for your people.

  58. For Christ's sake we ask.

  59. Amen.

  60. Amen.

  61. Amen.

  62. If you'll let your imagination

  63. travel with me to World War I,

  64. there's a soldier in the trench,

  65. bullets flying above his head.

  66. He's tired.

  67. He's hungry.

  68. I don't know how many more days

  69. I can go on like this,

  70. seeing people getting picked off

  71. to the right and to the left.

  72. And in that trench,

  73. he ducks down one more time,

  74. pulls out the letter

  75. from his family,

  76. and just reads those words

  77. one more time,

  78. holds the letter back up,

  79. puts it in his pocket,

  80. pops up,

  81. and he has strength

  82. to keep on in the fight.

  83. Not because he hates

  84. what's in front of him,

  85. but because he loves

  86. who he's fighting to defend.

  87. Well, Paul is one such warrior.

  88. And if you caught it,

  89. that very last verse,

  90. verse 30,

  91. he says,

  92. you church now,

  93. about 10 years later,

  94. after Acts 16,

  95. about 10 years later,

  96. you church,

  97. you're in that same conflict

  98. which you saw in me.

  99. When you saw me get arrested,

  100. thrown in prison,

  101. being persecuted

  102. for the name of Christ,

  103. you're in that now.

  104. So I think this last little section

  105. of the first chapter

  106. is an overflow of Paul's prayers

  107. for the church,

  108. and he's understanding

  109. what's really going on.

  110. Look back in Philippians 1,

  111. starting at verse 3.

  112. You remember how the first verses,

  113. from about verse 3 to verse 11,

  114. is how he's praying.

  115. He's been praying for them,

  116. interceding on behalf of the church.

  117. And just think for a moment,

  118. what is prayer?

  119. Prayer is when the Holy Spirit

  120. is uniting you on earth.

  121. Here you are.

  122. I've left you on the earth,

  123. but you're united spiritually

  124. to Christ,

  125. who's at the right hand

  126. of God the Father Almighty.

  127. And from there,

  128. he's going to come

  129. with the host of angel army

  130. and all the saints

  131. to usher in the eternal state,

  132. the new heavens and the new earth.

  133. But in prayer,

  134. you're still in the earth,

  135. and you're praying.

  136. You're united to Christ.

  137. And what is Christ doing

  138. at the right hand of the Father

  139. right now?

  140. He lives to intercede

  141. for his people.

  142. So out of that overflow

  143. of Paul's prayers,

  144. his union to Christ,

  145. praying for the church,

  146. joining his prayers

  147. to what Christ is praying,

  148. he gives these exhortations.

  149. I think that's what

  150. these verses are.

  151. So what did Christ

  152. teach Paul

  153. through prayer in heaven?

  154. Well, he's giving him

  155. battle language.

  156. Verse 27,

  157. stand fast.

  158. That's battle language.

  159. Keep striving together.

  160. You'll see in a moment

  161. how that's battle language.

  162. He says,

  163. do not be in any way

  164. terrified

  165. by your adversaries.

  166. Why would you be terrified

  167. unless you're in a battle

  168. taking shots?

  169. Verse 29,

  170. you are suffering.

  171. You have the same conflict

  172. as I had

  173. when I was with you

  174. and as what I'm in right now.

  175. This is similar

  176. as to what

  177. Christ gave

  178. to the church

  179. in Ephesus,

  180. which was

  181. Ephesians 6, 11,

  182. put on

  183. the whole armor

  184. of God

  185. that you may be able

  186. to stand

  187. against

  188. the schemes

  189. of the devil.

  190. So here's the church

  191. at war,

  192. the church militant.

  193. Beloved congregation

  194. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  195. I want to

  196. give you this same strength.

  197. I want to pass it on to you.

  198. I think these verses

  199. are strength

  200. for gospel-gripped

  201. soldiers.

  202. These verses

  203. are strength

  204. for you and me

  205. as part of the church

  206. today as well.

  207. I don't always do this

  208. and it wasn't even

  209. on purpose

  210. until I got done.

  211. I realized

  212. there are five B's here.

  213. So I looked up

  214. really quickly

  215. this morning,

  216. what does vitamin B

  217. even do in us?

  218. And it helps your nerves.

  219. Well, that's fitting.

  220. He says,

  221. don't be frightened

  222. in any way.

  223. It gives you energy

  224. and it makes

  225. your immune system

  226. strong

  227. so you can keep going.

  228. So here are five

  229. doses

  230. of vitamin B

  231. for the church.

  232. Number one,

  233. be citizens.

  234. Be citizens.

  235. And this is so,

  236. so beautiful

  237. of the gospel.

  238. It's an exhortation

  239. for you to do something.

  240. What is it you have to do?

  241. You have to be a citizen.

  242. It's something God does

  243. to you.

  244. He makes you a citizen.

  245. So number one,

  246. live out

  247. who you truly are

  248. no matter who's watching.

  249. Be a citizen.

  250. Live out

  251. who you truly are

  252. no matter who's watching.

  253. Look at verse 27.

  254. It says,

  255. only let your conduct

  256. be worthy

  257. of the gospel of Christ

  258. so that whether

  259. I come to see you

  260. or am absent,

  261. I may hear

  262. of your affairs

  263. that you stand fast.

  264. Philippi,

  265. it had belonged

  266. to Macedon

  267. and it had been named

  268. after Philip II

  269. who was the father

  270. of Alexander the Great.

  271. So it's got this

  272. rich Greek history

  273. and now it's called

  274. Little Rome.

  275. It had been built back up

  276. by the Romans.

  277. But it was a city

  278. much like

  279. Vanity Fair

  280. and Pilgrim's Progress,

  281. much like Denver.

  282. Every distortion

  283. known to mankind

  284. of a good desire

  285. that God gave

  286. is available

  287. and it's calling

  288. for your attention,

  289. your time,

  290. your energy,

  291. your money.

  292. And the exhortation

  293. is be a different

  294. kind of citizen

  295. within Philippi.

  296. Be a different

  297. kind of citizen

  298. within Denver,

  299. within the USA.

  300. the Christian Standard

  301. Bible translates

  302. that phrase

  303. as citizens of heaven.

  304. That's what he's getting at.

  305. As believers

  306. who were called out

  307. of the world

  308. into Christ

  309. but left in the world.

  310. Be that.

  311. That's who you truly are.

  312. Be a gospel colony,

  313. so to speak.

  314. The church is a gospel colony.

  315. And that command,

  316. let your conduct

  317. be worthy of.

  318. Six words.

  319. But in Greek

  320. it's just one word.

  321. I don't need to say

  322. what it is in Greek.

  323. You need to know

  324. that the root

  325. of that one word

  326. in Greek

  327. is polis.

  328. Polis.

  329. Like a city-state

  330. in the ancient world

  331. that belongs

  332. to an empire

  333. or a kingdom.

  334. So if you belong

  335. to a city-state,

  336. you know the laws,

  337. you know the manners,

  338. the values,

  339. the customs,

  340. the traditions

  341. of this city

  342. or this kingdom

  343. to which you belong.

  344. And in the ancient world

  345. to belong

  346. and to truly be a citizen,

  347. that was the best thing

  348. you had going

  349. for your life.

  350. It really defined you.

  351. And Paul says,

  352. you be a gospel citizen.

  353. You be a citizen

  354. of heaven.

  355. This collective mentality

  356. of all of us together,

  357. we are known

  358. by what we value,

  359. by the laws we hold to,

  360. by our customs.

  361. It rallies the troops

  362. and it incites action.

  363. It's such an ironic twist

  364. because in Acts 16.21,

  365. and Acts 16 is the whole chapter

  366. about how this church

  367. got started,

  368. read these words,

  369. Acts 16.21.

  370. Paul and his company

  371. were arrested

  372. because,

  373. quote,

  374. they teach customs

  375. that are not lawful

  376. for us,

  377. being Romans,

  378. to receive or observe.

  379. This was the opposition

  380. that Paul

  381. and his team

  382. of missionaries

  383. received.

  384. They were disrupting

  385. the order

  386. of this Roman city.

  387. And now he's using it

  388. as an encouragement,

  389. as strength

  390. for the church

  391. within the city.

  392. I love how the King James

  393. puts it.

  394. So we say,

  395. you or ye,

  396. what's the difference

  397. in that old English?

  398. Well, ye is plural.

  399. So it says,

  400. be ye being.

  401. That would be the word

  402. for word translation.

  403. Be all of you together

  404. collectively,

  405. being citizens.

  406. It's in the second person,

  407. passive.

  408. Again,

  409. it's an exhortation,

  410. but it's passive.

  411. God is the one

  412. who makes you a citizen.

  413. You are the one

  414. who keeps being

  415. what he made you.

  416. He's reminding them

  417. of who they are.

  418. You all,

  419. saints of the church

  420. at Philippi,

  421. with elders and deacons,

  422. that's his audience.

  423. That's who he's been

  424. talking to.

  425. Be,

  426. being,

  427. citizens,

  428. whose loyalty belongs

  429. not to Caesar,

  430. but to Christ,

  431. not to Rome,

  432. but to heaven,

  433. whose eyes are set

  434. not on the troubles

  435. of this world,

  436. but on the joy

  437. of the next.

  438. Be,

  439. being,

  440. that.

  441. That's who you are.

  442. And he wants them

  443. to do this

  444. because it's who they are,

  445. not for man's approval.

  446. That simple statement,

  447. whether I come to see you

  448. or am absent.

  449. Well, here's this little battalion,

  450. this little congregation,

  451. an outpost of the kingdom

  452. of heaven.

  453. Wouldn't it be wonderful

  454. if they could see Paul,

  455. you know,

  456. one of the great commanders

  457. under Christ,

  458. calling them,

  459. rallying them up,

  460. sending them to fight.

  461. Wouldn't that be encouraging?

  462. Paul says,

  463. you're doing this for Christ.

  464. Whether I'm with you

  465. to see it or not,

  466. don't do it for me.

  467. But that's who you are.

  468. Keep being who God made you.

  469. Here's why I think

  470. this is God-breathed

  471. strength for you and me

  472. also,

  473. for the church.

  474. We are to live out

  475. who we truly are,

  476. no matter who's watching.

  477. To be a gospel-gripped soldier

  478. means we keep being

  479. who God made us to be,

  480. no matter who's watching.

  481. What comes to mind

  482. with an illustration for this

  483. is there was this story,

  484. I never got to meet them,

  485. but there's a brother and sister

  486. from a tribe in Africa.

  487. And they had the opportunity

  488. because they were of a high class,

  489. educated class in Africa

  490. and they came to college

  491. in the USA.

  492. And I was still hearing stories

  493. about them from this old couple,

  494. like grandparents,

  495. that opened their home

  496. for college students

  497. who wanted to pray

  498. for missionaries.

  499. And they described these

  500. wonderful,

  501. beautiful people

  502. as just conducting

  503. themselves differently,

  504. not even in a spiritual sense,

  505. just how they carried themselves,

  506. how they walked

  507. with their shoulders back,

  508. their heads held high,

  509. the courtesy they showed

  510. and how they,

  511. you know,

  512. served one another

  513. and helped.

  514. And they told me later

  515. that they were humble about this,

  516. but they came to find out

  517. in getting to know them,

  518. their father was considered

  519. a prince of this tribe.

  520. They were noble,

  521. noble,

  522. you know,

  523. royalty.

  524. And so they acted

  525. like a prince and a princess,

  526. even though they're in America,

  527. totally different culture.

  528. That's who they are,

  529. that's how they were,

  530. were born into

  531. and that's how they wanted

  532. to live

  533. and conduct themselves

  534. no matter where they were,

  535. whether or not

  536. their royal father and mother

  537. were watching them.

  538. Isn't that a beautiful picture

  539. for us as Christians

  540. who Christ has left

  541. in the world?

  542. We are royalty.

  543. Our father is the king of kings.

  544. We belong to him.

  545. And he's saying,

  546. be being who you are.

  547. In English,

  548. we can put it that way,

  549. though it's different.

  550. It's let your conduct

  551. be worthy of the gospel.

  552. You are gospel citizens.

  553. Live this way.

  554. When you're gospel gripped,

  555. your conduct does not depend

  556. on man's observation.

  557. The reason we read

  558. John 17 earlier

  559. as part of our liturgy

  560. is because what I hear here

  561. are these echoes.

  562. John 17 is Christ's

  563. high priestly prayer,

  564. his prayer for the church.

  565. And when we're told

  566. he's praying now

  567. at the right hand of God,

  568. the Father Almighty,

  569. that's a little picture

  570. into how Christ prays

  571. for his church.

  572. And listen to the similarity

  573. of how Christ prays

  574. in John 17, 9

  575. with these first words

  576. of our sermon text today.

  577. Jesus said,

  578. I do not pray for the world,

  579. but for those

  580. whom you have given me,

  581. for they are yours.

  582. There is a people

  583. in the world

  584. that belong to God

  585. that are separated

  586. for him.

  587. All mine are yours,

  588. and yours are mine,

  589. and I am glorified

  590. in them.

  591. It's the reputation,

  592. the name of God,

  593. the glory of Christ

  594. that's being revealed

  595. through his gospel colony,

  596. his people,

  597. the church.

  598. So number one,

  599. be citizens.

  600. Live out who you truly are

  601. no matter who's watching.

  602. Number two,

  603. be one.

  604. Be one.

  605. From the harmony

  606. of your shared faith,

  607. fight aggressively

  608. as one soldier.

  609. Be one.

  610. From the harmony

  611. of your shared faith,

  612. fight aggressively

  613. as one soldier.

  614. I really believe

  615. that's the picture.

  616. Verse 27,

  617. he says,

  618. you stand fast,

  619. he says,

  620. in one spirit,

  621. with one mind,

  622. striving together

  623. for the faith

  624. of the gospel.

  625. We can infer here

  626. there's a challenge

  627. against this little

  628. congregation in Philippi.

  629. Potential disunity

  630. or division

  631. within the body.

  632. In Paul's tactical mind,

  633. this would be

  634. a spiritual loss.

  635. Sinclair Ferguson,

  636. who has so much experience

  637. with churches

  638. and laboring toward churches

  639. to be biblical

  640. and healthy

  641. and thriving,

  642. he made this observation

  643. with this passage in mind.

  644. It continues to be an issue

  645. where personal agendas

  646. creep in

  647. and ends up costing

  648. the church

  649. an incredible

  650. and unhealthy amount

  651. of energy

  652. that could have otherwise

  653. been spent

  654. on advancement.

  655. And so he says,

  656. stand fast

  657. in one spirit

  658. with one mind

  659. striving together

  660. for the faith

  661. of the gospel.

  662. That phrase,

  663. striving together,

  664. it's in the plural,

  665. present active,

  666. meaning all of you together

  667. continuously

  668. working at this

  669. right now.

  670. Do it.

  671. Advancing the cause.

  672. Labor toward the goal.

  673. Striving together.

  674. It's most often used

  675. in secular literature

  676. for competing.

  677. Like in the Greek Olympics,

  678. striving together

  679. toward the prize.

  680. I don't know what image

  681. you have of the Apostle Paul,

  682. but through him,

  683. through the personality

  684. and the background

  685. God gave him

  686. and through all of his travels

  687. around the Roman Empire,

  688. he loves these images

  689. from the Roman world.

  690. Racing,

  691. boxing,

  692. wrestling matches.

  693. In 1 Corinthians 9.26,

  694. he says,

  695. I don't shadow box.

  696. I'm here beating my body.

  697. I'm not just a guy,

  698. you know,

  699. theorizing about theology.

  700. I'm in the MMA.

  701. I've taken black eyes.

  702. I lost a tooth,

  703. you know.

  704. My leg,

  705. I walk with a limp.

  706. He's in it.

  707. He's in the fight.

  708. And he says,

  709. you church,

  710. strive together.

  711. One mind.

  712. One spirit.

  713. Like one soldier

  714. aggressively fighting

  715. this spiritual battle.

  716. What does it look like

  717. to do that?

  718. To aggressively

  719. go to battle

  720. as a church?

  721. I think we have

  722. a wonderful example

  723. in a man named Epaphras.

  724. In the letter

  725. to the Colossians

  726. by the inspiration

  727. of the Spirit,

  728. Colossians 4.12,

  729. we read this.

  730. Epaphras,

  731. who is one of you,

  732. a servant of Jesus Christ,

  733. he is always striving

  734. or struggling

  735. on your behalf

  736. in his prayers.

  737. That you may stand

  738. mature

  739. and fully assured

  740. in all the will

  741. of God.

  742. He uses that same phrase,

  743. striving for you,

  744. to describe Epaphras

  745. praying,

  746. interceding.

  747. So if you know someone

  748. who prays on behalf

  749. of others aggressively,

  750. you know a true

  751. prayer warrior.

  752. And he says,

  753. do this together,

  754. at the same place,

  755. at the same time,

  756. in concert.

  757. So interwoven

  758. should your prayers

  759. be fighting

  760. for the advancement

  761. of the kingdom

  762. that it's like

  763. a singular prayer.

  764. Do this together,

  765. one spirit,

  766. one mind.

  767. I think this gets

  768. at the same description

  769. of the early church,

  770. Acts 4, 32.

  771. Now the multitude

  772. of those who were

  773. believing were of

  774. one heart

  775. and one soul.

  776. See, the way that God

  777. started the early church,

  778. Acts 4,

  779. the pouring out

  780. of the Spirit,

  781. the same thing continues

  782. now from city

  783. to city

  784. to city

  785. to city.

  786. Decades pass,

  787. and God is still

  788. working in the same way.

  789. So it's possible,

  790. no,

  791. it's biblical,

  792. and to be expected

  793. that we as a church

  794. would be able

  795. to be described

  796. that same way,

  797. so full of the Holy Spirit,

  798. that His mind,

  799. the mind of Christ

  800. is working its way

  801. into all of us,

  802. and to the extent

  803. that we share

  804. the mind of Christ,

  805. we are sharing one mind.

  806. To the extent

  807. that we are praying together

  808. for the advancement

  809. of God's kingdom

  810. and doing those simple,

  811. ordinary things

  812. He's told us to do,

  813. we are such a church as well.

  814. We're fighting aggressively

  815. as if we were just

  816. one soldier.

  817. What about the phrase

  818. for the faith

  819. of the gospel?

  820. I think in this meaning here

  821. it's a singular article,

  822. so the faith

  823. of the gospel.

  824. This means

  825. like what Jude said

  826. in Jude 1, 3,

  827. contend for the faith

  828. that was once for all

  829. delivered to the saints.

  830. It's the body of teaching

  831. about Christ,

  832. it's the faith

  833. that we received

  834. from Christ

  835. through the apostles

  836. breathed out

  837. into the New Testament.

  838. Contend for this truth.

  839. Contend for the doctrines

  840. about God

  841. and salvation in Christ

  842. alone

  843. by grace

  844. through faith in Him.

  845. 2 Thessalonians 2, 15

  846. gives a similar instruction.

  847. He says,

  848. stand firm

  849. and hold to the traditions

  850. that you were taught by us,

  851. either by our spoken word

  852. or by our letter.

  853. So we're not holding on

  854. to these Jewish traditions

  855. or traditions of man,

  856. but we're holding on

  857. to what has been handed down

  858. within the church.

  859. That's why it's very appropriate

  860. for a congregation

  861. now, 2024,

  862. to still read

  863. the Apostles' Creed,

  864. the Nicene Creed,

  865. from our confessions

  866. and we share

  867. this rich heritage

  868. that's been handed down

  869. through the church

  870. and preserved

  871. by the Holy Spirit.

  872. Ferguson again commented,

  873. any distortion

  874. to the faith handed down

  875. will result in failure

  876. to live as citizens of heaven.

  877. You see the connection

  878. between the two.

  879. You distort the doctrine,

  880. you're going to mess up

  881. the way people live.

  882. Any distortion

  883. to the faith handed down

  884. will result in failure

  885. to live as citizens of heaven.

  886. Our Lord Jesus prayed

  887. in John 17, 11,

  888. Now I am no longer

  889. in the world,

  890. but these are in the world.

  891. I come to you,

  892. Holy Father,

  893. and keep through your name

  894. those whom you have given me

  895. that they may be one

  896. as we are one.

  897. Jesus prays for the Father

  898. by the work of the Spirit

  899. to keep his church,

  900. preserve them,

  901. and may they be one,

  902. sharing in the unity

  903. of God himself.

  904. Well, the second command

  905. is to be one

  906. from the harmony

  907. of your shared faith.

  908. Fight aggressively

  909. as one soldier.

  910. Do you have this shared faith?

  911. Do you follow this same Christ?

  912. There's no room

  913. to sit on the sidelines.

  914. Jesus says,

  915. either you're for me,

  916. or you're for the enemy.

  917. If you're not following Christ,

  918. if you're taking a wait and see,

  919. let's see how this all turns out,

  920. there will be no hope

  921. for you in the end.

  922. You follow Christ.

  923. You join his army.

  924. You serve him now.

  925. You don't know

  926. what tomorrow holds for you.

  927. This is the hour, he says.

  928. Today is the day

  929. to follow Jesus.

  930. Don't put it off to tomorrow.

  931. Your flesh wants to have

  932. other excuses.

  933. This is the day

  934. to make your allegiance

  935. to Jesus,

  936. the King of Kings,

  937. certain.

  938. Walter Gentry,

  939. he made a connection

  940. with this command

  941. to strive together

  942. with the church

  943. to an old fable,

  944. Aesop's fable,

  945. probably would have been

  946. familiar to this church

  947. in Philippi as well.

  948. There was a battle

  949. in this fable

  950. between the beasts

  951. and the birds.

  952. Each one had issues

  953. against the other.

  954. Those who were prey of one

  955. were angry at the predators

  956. of the other.

  957. And so they go to war,

  958. the beasts versus the birds.

  959. Well, there were the bats

  960. who fly like a bird,

  961. but they're mammals,

  962. like beasts.

  963. And they didn't pick a side

  964. in the battle.

  965. Whoever was winning

  966. a little bit,

  967. they would drift over

  968. and stay close to that side.

  969. Well, finally,

  970. when the battle was over

  971. and they're deciding

  972. who gets which land,

  973. they had to decide

  974. what do we do

  975. with the bats?

  976. And no one wanted

  977. the bats on their side

  978. because they're not loyal.

  979. They don't pick a side.

  980. They don't fight for either.

  981. So bats were relegated

  982. to the caves.

  983. The moral of this story is

  984. if you're a Christian,

  985. you can't be a bat.

  986. I love how Charles Spurges

  987. pointed out,

  988. every man must serve somebody.

  989. We have no choice

  990. as to that fact.

  991. Those who have no master

  992. are slaves to themselves.

  993. Depend on it.

  994. You will either serve Satan

  995. or Christ,

  996. either self or the Savior.

  997. You will find sin,

  998. self, Satan,

  999. and the world

  1000. to be hard masters.

  1001. But if you wear

  1002. the crest of Christ,

  1003. you will find him

  1004. so meek

  1005. and lowly of heart

1006. that you will find rest

  1007. for your souls.

1008. Wear the crest of Christ.

  1009. Fight in his army.

  1010. And from the harmony

  1011. of our shared faith,

  1012. we fight aggressively

  1013. in a spiritual sense

  1014. as one soldier.

  1015. Number three,

  1016. be unrattled.

  1017. Be unrattled.

1018. Paul tells the church next

  1019. that to suffer opposition

1020. is proof you are advancing together.

  1021. Be unrattled.

  1022. Be unrattled.

  1023. To suffer opposition

  1024. is proof

1025. that you are advancing together.

  1026. Verse 28 reads,

  1027. Not in any way,

  1028. a double negative there,

  1029. not in any way

  1030. terrified

  1031. by your adversaries,

  1032. which is to them

  1033. a proof of perdition,

1034. but to you of salvation

  1035. and that from God.

1036. Christians in the ancient world,

  1037. much like today,

  1038. were suspicious.

1039. The world would look at them

  1040. and say,

  1041. Those people are weird.

1042. You don't want to be like that.

  1043. They were considered odd

  1044. by the Roman masses,

  1045. which made them

  1046. an easy target.

  1047. There was one thing

  1048. that had happened.

  1049. It's that

  1050. when Paul got converted

  1051. in the first decade

1052. or so of his ministry,

  1053. Caesar Augustus

  1054. was the emperor

  1055. of the Roman Empire.

  1056. But after the church

  1057. in Philippi was planted,

1058. there was a change in power

  1059. and Nero came in.

  1060. And under Nero,

  1061. the persecution

  1062. ramped up extremely.

  1063. And Christians,

  1064. especially in Rome,

  1065. who were considered

  1066. odd and weird outcasts,

  1067. many were arrested,

  1068. burned at the stake,

1069. thrown to the wild beasts

  1070. or to the gladiators

  1071. for show,

  1072. desperate attempts

  1073. to keep a momentum

1074. going within the Roman Empire,

  1075. and others were crucified.

  1076. So,

  1077. in Philippi,

  1078. there's an implied need

  1079. that there's opposition,

  1080. not only threats

  1081. of division

  1082. from the inside,

  1083. but true adversaries

  1084. coming at the church

1085. from the outside as well.

1086. And Paul doubles down on it.

  1087. He says,

  1088. never in no way

  1089. be affrightened.

  1090. The words there,

  1091. it's don't be affrightened

  1092. by your adversaries,

1093. but the word by is under.

1094. Don't be ever in any way

  1095. thinking you are under

  1096. these adversaries.

1097. These ones who are opposing you

  1098. are not above you.

  1099. Don't be afraid.

  1100. And the word afraid

1101. is often used to describe

1102. a horse when it startles.

1103. So if you're going on a path

  1104. and there's a rattlesnake,

1105. the horse will rear up,

  1106. buck you off.

  1107. It'll get rattled.

  1108. But a horse that's

  1109. on a military campaign

  1110. that's charging forward

  1111. and advancing the cause,

1112. it has to be a horse

  1113. that's well broken in

  1114. that won't be rattled.

1115. It's going to keep putting

1116. one foot in front of the other.

  1117. It will not flinch

1118. in the face of opposition

  1119. and adversaries.

  1120. He says,

  1121. be like that Calvary.

  1122. You're advancing together.

  1123. Don't rear up

  1124. and freak out.

  1125. Don't get paralyzed

  1126. by fear.

1127. No matter how intense it gets,

  1128. never stop

  1129. charging forward.

  1130. When you think of

  1131. trembling with fear

  1132. in the context

1133. of this church in Philippi,

  1134. there's one person

  1135. who probably comes

  1136. to mind for you.

  1137. That's exactly how

  1138. the Philippian jailer

  1139. was described.

  1140. Do you remember that?

  1141. The Philippian jailer,

  1142. he trembled with fear

  1143. in Acts 16

  1144. and he fell down

  1145. on the ground.

  1146. He was ready

1147. to take his own life.

  1148. That same word,

  1149. affrightened.

  1150. And God takes people

  1151. like that,

  1152. so afraid

  1153. of losing their career

  1154. and their life,

  1155. but he says,

  1156. no,

1157. tremble in the fear of God

  1158. and believe.

  1159. What must I do

  1160. to be saved?

  1161. That's the only thing

1162. he needed to know now.

1163. And this is good news

1164. for people like you and me

  1165. because anyone

  1166. who has trembled

1167. in the fear of God

  1168. never needs to tremble

1169. out of fear of man again.

  1170. When you are opposed

  1171. for Christ,

  1172. Paul says,

  1173. this is proof.

  1174. It's a testing fire.

  1175. Your suffering

  1176. is a sign

  1177. of perdition

  1178. for the enemies,

1179. that they will be destroyed,

  1180. but for you

  1181. of your salvation.

  1182. That word sign

  1183. or proof,

  1184. it can be translated

  1185. as it's really

  1186. a token

  1187. or an omen

  1188. of their destruction

  1189. and living proof

  1190. for you

  1191. that you will live.

  1192. In other words,

  1193. a token

1194. or a sign like this,

  1195. it's to take

1196. all of the available evidence,

  1197. line it all up

  1198. on the table,

  1199. then arrange it

  1200. in a logical order

  1201. and come to

  1202. a conclusion.

  1203. That's a proof.

  1204. So he says,

  1205. look at this church,

  1206. what's happening.

  1207. You're advancing.

1208. Christ is praying for you.

  1209. I'm praying for you.

  1210. You are striving together.

  1211. Keep doing that.

  1212. And yes,

  1213. you're facing opposition.

  1214. Let that be proof

1215. that the kingdom of Christ

  1216. is advancing

  1217. and will not fail.

  1218. And if the kingdom

  1219. of Christ

  1220. is advancing,

  1221. you can know

  1222. that the Father

  1223. will make all

  1224. of the enemies

  1225. of Christ

  1226. crumble

  1227. under his feet.

  1228. They will be destroyed

  1229. and you will be

  1230. victorious

  1231. with Christ.

  1232. your foes

  1233. will fail

  1234. for sure.

  1235. King Jesus prayed

  1236. in John 17, 14,

  1237. I have given them

  1238. your word.

  1239. The world

  1240. has hated them

  1241. because they are

  1242. not of this world

  1243. just as I am

  1244. not of the world.

1245. And I do not pray

1246. that you should take them

  1247. out of the world,

1248. but you should keep them

  1249. from the evil one.

  1250. for they are not

  1251. of the world

  1252. just as I am

  1253. not of the world.

  1254. And when your gospel

  1255. grips like that

  1256. Philippian jailer,

  1257. like every true believer,

  1258. then you learn

  1259. to practice your faith

  1260. without the fear

  1261. of man.

  1262. You don't need

1263. to ever be rattled again

  1264. if you're a Christian.

  1265. And when we do

  1266. face opposition

  1267. and most likely

  1268. in our lifetimes

  1269. we'll feel more

  1270. and more of this

  1271. ratcheting up,

1272. we need to remind ourselves

  1273. you're going to need

  1274. to remind me

  1275. this is proof

  1276. that the kingdom

  1277. of God

  1278. is advancing.

  1279. Well, the fourth

  1280. dose of vitamin B

  1281. for today

  1282. is be kept.

  1283. Be unrattled

  1284. and now be kept.

  1285. It is God

  1286. who has gripped you

1287. and he will hold you

  1288. by his gospel.

  1289. Be kept.

  1290. It is God

  1291. who has gripped you

1292. and he will hold you

  1293. by his gospel.

  1294. You can lose

  1295. the thread

  1296. of the theology.

  1297. Why is Paul

  1298. anchoring all of

  1299. these exhortations?

  1300. It's exactly this.

  1301. In verse 27

  1302. he says

  1303. you're going to live

  1304. in a manner

  1305. worthy of the gospel.

  1306. It's the gospel

  1307. that defines you.

  1308. In verse 28

  1309. he reminds them

  1310. salvation

  1311. is from God.

  1312. Don't forget

  1313. that church.

  1314. In verse 29

  1315. he says

  1316. for to you

  1317. it has been granted

  1318. on behalf

  1319. of Christ.

  1320. It's for Christ's sake

  1321. that you're saved.

  1322. And it was granted

  1323. for you

  1324. to believe.

  1325. The implied need

  1326. here for this church

  1327. in Philippi

  1328. is that

  1329. through the opposition

  1330. and the hardships

  1331. like us

  1332. they can ask

  1333. those questions.

  1334. If my suffering

  1335. continues to be

  1336. this hard

  1337. will I be able

  1338. to keep going?

  1339. Maybe I never

  1340. belonged

  1341. to Christ

  1342. in the first place.

  1343. Maybe God

  1344. started this work

  1345. in me

  1346. but I don't know

1347. if I can finish it.

  1348. That's what's

  1349. so common

  1350. for a flesh

  1351. to ask

  1352. and that's what

  1353. he's been answering

1354. so far in chapter 1.

  1355. Christ started this

  1356. he will finish it.

  1357. And he gives him

  1358. the strength

  1359. in verse 28

  1360. he says

  1361. your salvation

  1362. is from God.

  1363. It was God

  1364. who granted

  1365. for you to believe

  1366. in the first place.

  1367. Verse 29

  1368. God gives you faith

  1369. to receive the gospel

  1370. on behalf

  1371. of Christ.

  1372. You believe

  1373. for Christ's sake.

  1374. He confirms this

  1375. to the church

  1376. in Rome as well.

  1377. Romans 5

  1378. 2

  1379. Through him

  1380. Jesus Christ

  1381. we have also

  1382. obtained access

  1383. by faith

  1384. to this grace

  1385. in which we stand.

  1386. Be citizens.

  1387. He who made you

  1388. a citizen

  1389. will keep you

  1390. as a citizen.

  1391. See the Roman

  1392. citizenship

  1393. could be bought

  1394. but it was much

  1395. better if

  1396. you didn't have

  1397. to go buy it

  1398. or work for it.

  1399. If you could simply

  1400. have it granted

  1401. to you.

  1402. And that's the word

  1403. he uses.

  1404. Your faith

  1405. has been granted

  1406. to you.

  1407. You belong

  1408. because God

  1409. gave it

  1410. as a gift.

  1411. Remember in Acts

  1412. 22-28

  1413. the centurion

  1414. said with a large

  1415. sum I obtained

  1416. this citizenship

  1417. to be a Roman

  1418. and Paul says

  1419. but I was born

  1420. a citizen.

  1421. It was granted

  1422. to me.

  1423. So God

  1424. is the one

  1425. who will keep you.

  1426. Be kept

  1427. church.

  1428. Remind yourself

  1429. of this.

  1430. Well there's that

  1431. little boat

  1432. in the ocean

  1433. being tossed

  1434. with big waves.

  1435. Even the grown-ups

  1436. are afraid

  1437. perhaps.

  1438. But there's a dad

  1439. standing

  1440. his feet are

  1441. shoulder width

  1442. apart

  1443. holding the

  1444. three-year-old.

  1445. the three-year-old

  1446. is holding

  1447. on to that

  1448. dad's neck

  1449. as tight

  1450. as he can.

  1451. But the dad

  1452. is holding

  1453. on even

  1454. tighter.

  1455. See we

  1456. hold on to

  1457. Christ but

  1458. it's Christ

  1459. who keeps

  1460. us.

  1461. King Jesus

  1462. prayed in

  1463. verse 12

  1464. of chapter 17

  1465. of John.

  1466. He said

  1467. I kept

  1468. them in

  1469. your name.

  1470. Those who

  1471. you gave

  1472. me I

  1473. have kept

  1474. and not

  1475. one of

  1476. them is

  1477. lost.

  1478. So church

  1479. you too

  1480. be kept.

  1481. when your

  1482. gospel

  1483. gripped

  1484. you grow

  1485. in your

  1486. assurance

  1487. of salvation

  1488. and this

  1489. is proof

  1490. of his

  1491. faithfulness

  1492. to you.

  1493. Well the

  1494. fifth and

  1495. final dose

  1496. of vitamin

  1497. B for us

  1498. today is

  1499. be

  1500. compassionate.

  1501. Be

  1502. compassionate.

  1503. Keep

  1504. receiving

  1505. Christ

  1506. and suffering

  1507. upon him

  1508. together.

  1509. Be

  1510. compassionate.

  1511. Keep

  1512. receiving

  1513. Christ

  1514. and suffering

  1515. upon him

  1516. together.

  1517. Verse 29

  1518. reads

  1519. it has been

  1520. granted on

  1521. behalf of

  1522. Christ

  1523. for you to

  1524. suffer for

  1525. his sake.

  1526. Verse 30

  1527. having the

  1528. same conflict

  1529. which you

  1530. saw in me

  1531. and now

  1532. here is

  1533. in me.

  1534. It has

  1535. been granted

  1536. on behalf

  1537. of Christ.

  1538. That word

  1539. granted could

  1540. be translated

  1541. graced.

  1542. It has been

  1543. graced to

  1544. you to

  1545. believe and

  1546. it has been

  1547. graced to

  1548. you to

  1549. suffer.

  1550. The word

  1551. suffer could

  1552. be word

  1553. for word

  1554. translated as

  1555. be

  1556. emotioning.

  1557. The root

  1558. is

  1559. like the

  1560. passion.

  1561. So

  1562. compassionate

  1563. means to

  1564. suffer with.

  1565. Be

  1566. compassionate.

  1567. Keep

  1568. suffering

  1569. with

  1570. Christ.

  1571. The

  1572. implied need

  1573. for Christians

  1574. who are

  1575. suffering

  1576. is to

  1577. question

  1578. the goodness

  1579. of God.

  1580. Why did

  1581. King Jesus

  1582. call me to

  1583. him and

  1584. to his

  1585. church

  1586. just to

  1587. suffer?

  1588. It's so

  1589. hard.

  1590. Is he a

  1591. good king?

  1592. Well in

  1593. verse 29

  1594. and 30

  1595. Paul says

  1596. that you

  1597. believe in

  1598. him and

  1599. you suffer

  1600. for him.

  1601. and the

  1602. preposition

  1603. for could

  1604. be upon.

  1605. You

  1606. suffer

  1607. upon

  1608. him.

  1609. So as

  1610. you're going

  1611. through a

  1612. suffering Christ

  1613. is right

  1614. there under

  1615. you sustaining

  1616. you carrying

  1617. you through.

  1618. That's how much

  1619. you are suffering

  1620. together with

  1621. him.

  1622. It says it's

  1623. been graciously

  1624. given to

  1625. you.

  1626. Exceedingly

  1627. with you

  1628. for the

  1629. sake of

  1630. Christ

  1631. to suffer

  1632. together.

  1633. Jesus warned

  1634. every disciple

  1635. Matthew 10

  1636. 39

  1637. whoever finds

  1638. his life

  1639. will lose

  1640. it and

  1641. whoever loses

  1642. his life

  1643. for my

  1644. sake will

  1645. find it.

  1646. In John

  1647. 17 18

  1648. he prayed

  1649. as you

  1650. sent me

  1651. into the

  1652. world

  1653. I have

  1654. also sent

  1655. them

  1656. into the

  1657. world.

  1658. So to

  1659. be a

  1660. Christian

  1661. is to

  1662. lose

  1663. your life

  1664. for living

  1665. for yourself

  1666. but to

  1667. find eternal

  1668. life

  1669. living in

  1670. Christ.

  1671. And just

  1672. as Christ

  1673. came on a

  1674. mission to

  1675. lay down

  1676. his life

  1677. for the

  1678. sake of

  1679. others and

  1680. for his

  1681. kingdom

  1682. to be a

  1683. Christian is

  1684. to lay

  1685. down your

  1686. life and

  1687. follow Christ

  1688. following him

  1689. as he advances

  1690. his kingdom

  1691. even through

  1692. suffering.

  1693. We have so

  1694. much encouragement

  1695. in all the

  1696. New Testament

  1697. that the

  1698. Christian church

  1699. is a

  1700. suffering

  1701. church and

  1702. God doesn't

  1703. waste a

  1704. drop of

  1705. suffering.

  1706. I won't

  1707. read these

  1708. for today

  1709. but I

  1710. want to

  1711. encourage you

  1712. God does

  1713. at least

  1714. three things

  1715. every time

  1716. we're going

  1717. through seasons

  1718. of suffering.

  1719. Number one

  1720. as you

  1721. suffer King

  1722. Jesus

  1723. refines you

  1724. 1 Peter 6

  1725. and 7

  1726. describing the

  1727. suffering like

  1728. being tested

  1729. by fire

  1730. to purify

  1731. and refine

  1732. number two

  1733. King Jesus

  1734. comforts you

  1735. 2 Corinthians

  1736. 1 5

  1737. do you

  1738. suffer in

  1739. Christ

  1740. well you

  1741. can know

  1742. for certain

  1743. you will

  1744. be comforted

  1745. in Christ

  1746. to be

  1747. comforted

  1748. by Christ

  1749. himself

  1750. is worth

  1751. any

  1752. suffering

  1753. and number

  1754. three King

  1755. Jesus

  1756. enables you

  1757. and I

  1758. to rejoice

  1759. 1 Peter 4

  1760. 12 through

  1761. 18

  1762. that same

  1763. letter

  1764. see the

  1765. suffering

  1766. starts and

  1767. it feels

  1768. like a

  1769. refiner's

  1770. fire

  1771. but on

  1772. the far

  1773. side of

  1774. that

  1775. is joy

  1776. and rejoicing

  1777. you know

  1778. Christ on

  1779. such a

  1780. deeper

  1781. level

  1782. the

  1783. illustration

  1784. for me

  1785. to sum

  1786. up this

  1787. last point

  1788. of being

  1789. compassionate

  1790. keep receiving

  1791. Christ and

  1792. suffering upon

  1793. him for his

  1794. kingdom together

  1795. and summarizing

  1796. the theme of

  1797. the sermon

  1798. of a soldier

  1799. aggressively

  1800. advancing

  1801. the cause

  1802. it came

  1803. to my mind

  1804. about Uriah

  1805. I was thinking

  1806. about how

  1807. you know

  1808. David

  1809. a man who

  1810. God used

  1811. so mightily

  1812. and through

  1813. the line

  1814. of David

  1815. would come

  1816. the great

  1817. king

  1818. Jesus

  1819. but at

  1820. the end

  1821. of David's

  1822. life

  1823. he's an

  1824. anti-hero

  1825. and instead

  1826. we have

  1827. this foil

  1828. this contrast

  1829. which is

  1830. Uriah

  1831. the Hittite

  1832. David has

  1833. power

  1834. Uriah

  1835. is a man

  1836. under orders

  1837. David stays

  1838. back in the

  1839. palace

  1840. Uriah

  1841. is on the

  1842. battlefield

  1843. the front

  1844. lines

  1845. David takes

  1846. what's not

  1847. his

  1848. Uriah

  1849. restrains

  1850. himself

  1851. from taking

  1852. what is

  1853. his

  1854. when his

  1855. nation

  1856. was at

  1857. war

  1858. and his

  1859. fellow

  1860. soldiers

  1861. were in

  1862. battle

  1863. and David

  1864. called him

  1865. back to try

  1866. to entrap

  1867. him

  1868. you remember

  1869. how Uriah

  1870. actually slept

  1871. on the hard

  1872. floor in the

  1873. steps outside

  1874. of his

  1875. home

  1876. and he said

  1877. how can I

  1878. be enjoying

  1879. inside the

  1880. comfort and

  1881. being with

  1882. my wife

  1883. when the

  1884. army of

  1885. God

  1886. is fighting

  1887. and even

  1888. when his

  1889. adversary

  1890. in this

  1891. case

  1892. David

  1893. intended

  1894. evil

  1895. Uriah

  1896. obeyed

  1897. those

  1898. orders

  1899. went to

  1900. those

  1901. front

  1902. lines

  1903. and

  1904. fought

  1905. to his

  1906. death

  1907. he suffered

  1908. and Uriah

  1909. the Hittite

  1910. died

  1911. as a

  1912. citizen

  1913. of heaven

  1914. so in

  1915. this

  1916. example

  1917. Uriah

  1918. is a

  1919. shadow

  1920. of Christ

  1921. he did

  1922. not take

  1923. the

  1924. privileges

  1925. that he

  1926. was

  1927. entitled

  1928. for

  1929. but for

  1930. the sake

  1931. of his

  1932. mission

  1933. for your

  1934. life

  1935. for your

  1936. soul

  1937. for eternity

  1938. Jesus

  1939. Christ

  1940. fought for

  1941. you to

  1942. the very

  1943. end

  1944. he showed

  1945. the greatest

  1946. restraint

  1947. and he's

  1948. victorious

  1949. in his

  1950. battle

  1951. he crushed

  1952. the serpent's

  1953. head

  1954. and he

  1955. will come

  1956. back

  1957. for his

  1958. own

  1959. when

  1960. your

  1961. gospel

  1962. gripped

  1963. you

  1964. suffer

  1965. with

  1966. King

  1967. Jesus

  1968. with

  1969. his

  1970. people

  1971. in

  1972. Christ's

  1973. name

  1974. Charles

  1975. had in

  1976. Spurgeon's

  1977. last sermon

  1978. right before

  1979. he died

  1980. his last

  1981. little paragraph

  1982. his last

  1983. point reads

  1984. like this

  1985. King

  1986. Jesus

  1987. is the

  1988. most

  1989. magnanimous

  1990. of captains

  1991. magnanimous
