  1. This is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, sufficient, authoritative word for his people.

  2. Philippians 2, starting at verse 5.

  3. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus,

  4. who being in the form of God did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,

  5. but made himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant,

  6. and coming in the likeness of men, and being found in appearance as a man,

  7. he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death on the cross.

  8. Therefore, God also has highly exalted him and given him the name which is above every name,

  9. that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven and those on earth and of those under the earth,

  10. and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father.

  11. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence,

  12. work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

  13. for it is God who works in you, both to will and to do for his good pleasure.

  14. This is the word of the Lord.

  15. Thanks be to God.

  16. Thanks be to God. You may be seated.

  17. The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of the Lord endures forever.

  18. Amen.

  19. Let's pray.

  20. Let's pray.

  21. Lord, help us to receive your steadfast love once again today through the ministry of your word,

  22. as you've already ministered to us, Lord, through the reading, through prayer, through song.

  23. Help us to know, Lord, how close you are to your people,

  24. how present your Holy Spirit is inside the believer and with your people

  25. when we gather in Christ's name in a special way.

  26. Please illumine, Lord, these pages of the scripture to us and press it home in our lives.

  27. We ask that your Holy Spirit will give us clarity on how to walk with you

  28. and how it is that you want to apply this truth to our lives.

  29. For your glory we ask.

  30. Amen.

  31. Well, you all came to church today.

  32. Why?

  33. You read your Bible this week.

  34. Why did you do that?

  35. You showed kindness.

  36. You served others.

  37. You served in many ways.

  38. Many of you prepare meals for this congregation.

  39. Why do we do these things?

  40. Why is it that we work?

  41. Verse 12, it says,

  42. Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

  43. So, beloved congregation,

  44. my question for us today is,

  45. Why do you work?

  46. Why is it that you obey the Lord Jesus?

  47. First, I want to point out,

  48. this is from my own weakness,

  49. three fleshly ways that I'm tempted to work.

  50. So, here are three wrong reasons why we should work and obey.

  51. My flesh wants to read those verses this way.

  52. Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

  53. Satan wants to accuse me and tell me,

  54. You know that you've sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  55. You've fallen with Adam and your own sin on top of that.

  56. You're weighted down.

  57. Picture a pit dug out in the middle of your backyard that's very deep.

  58. When we're in the gym at Mammoth Heights,

  59. as deep as that ceiling is,

  60. you are down at the bottom of a pit.

  61. You have fallen short of the glory of God.

  62. And then I come to a verse like this,

  63. and it says,

  64. Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

  65. And my flesh wants to tell me three wrong ways to read that verse.

  66. Here's one of them.

  67. I want to read,

  68. Work for your own salvation.

  69. In other words,

  70. Work to climb out of this pit that you're in.

  71. Earn your righteousness by being good enough.

  72. Doesn't your flesh want to read that to you that way sometimes?

  73. Here's a second wrong way we can read this verse.

  74. Work at your own salvation.

  75. In other words,

  76. just be down there in the bottom of the pit and keep trying harder.

  77. As if God were looking over this pit at everyone down there,

  78. and he's going to watch to see who's working at it,

  79. who's trying hard.

  80. And those are the ones that he'll save.

  81. And the third wrong way I can try to read this verse according to my flesh

  82. is that I can work toward my salvation.

  83. It's like God is throwing me a rope,

  84. but I got to now rock climb out of this pit with the rope supporting me.

  85. Work toward it.

  86. But look very carefully in your own Bible.

  87. What does verse 12 say?

  88. It doesn't say work for,

  89. work at,

  90. work toward.

  91. It says work out your own salvation.

  92. So we just need to unpack what this means.

  93. But then the back part of that same verse,

  94. it says work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

  95. My flesh can want to read that this way.

  96. You need to work as a Christian because if you don't work,

  97. evil will prevail.

  98. You need to tremble at the thought of not having done enough in this life to make it to heaven.

  99. Well, Proverbs 14, 12 says,

  100. there is a way that seems right to a man,

  101. but in the end it leads to death.

  102. And if I'm still working in this wrong way,

  103. according to my own flesh,

  104. you're going to work hard your whole life

  105. and find out in the end there's death.

  106. If you're a Christian,

  107. this means you trust by faith that Jesus Christ has finished the work.

  108. He's already crushed the serpent's head.

  109. Evil cannot prevail.

  110. Jesus Christ came to give life and peace everlasting,

  111. but he only gives this as a free gift.

  112. Romans 4, verse 5,

    Romans 4:5

  113. couldn't make it any clearer.

  114. To the one who does not work,

  115. but believes in God,

  116. who justifies the ungodly,

  117. his faith in Jesus Christ,

  118. God counts as righteousness.

  119. So don't think like a pagan.

  120. Don't let Satan twist your thoughts

  121. that you can work for or at or toward your own salvation.

  122. Ascalus was a Greek tragedy writer,

  123. like a theater guy.

  124. And so he wrote some of the most famous tragedies

  125. about 500 years before Christ.

  126. And in one of his plays,

  127. he had this famous phrase that's still quoted today,

  128. and it says this,

  129. the gods help those who help themselves.

  130. See, that's not what this verse is saying at all.

  131. And if we read it like a pagan,

  132. this is the way that leads to death.

  133. So what does this verse mean?

  134. I gave you three or four ways to not read it

  135. according to the flesh,

  136. but I want to now give you 12 correct reasons

  137. for why we should obey the Lord Jesus Christ.

  138. Let's go back to that analogy of the pit.

  139. So it's true.

  140. The Bible says,

  141. for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.

  142. You and I are helplessly all alone

  143. in the bottom of the pit.

  144. But the verses that come right before verse 12,

  145. which we just read,

  146. it says that God himself got muddy

  147. and he went to the very bottom of the pit where you are.

  148. And he finished the work that you could never do

  149. to climb out of that pit.

  150. And the father exalted him.

  151. And by faith, God brings you with Christ.

  152. So you're no longer in the pit.

  153. That word work out in verse 12,

  154. that's the verb.

  155. It was used in the same first century

  156. by another Greek author named Strabo

  157. to speak of digging silver out of silver mines.

  158. Go work out the silver from the mine.

  159. Go work it out.

  160. So your salvation can be compared to this massive gift.

  161. It's a mine full of silver and gold and diamonds

  162. that need to be worked out.

  163. It's like Jesus already owns it.

  164. This mine is his.

  165. He bought this mine with his precious blood.

  166. And he's sending you in there.

  167. You already have the deed in your hand.

  168. You just need to go and walk out with what is yours.

  169. Go work it out.

  170. That's a better picture of our state.

  171. He tells you to work it out

  172. and understand how these treasures

  173. can be for someone like you.

  174. How is it that this verse can be true?

  175. 2 Corinthians 8, 9.

  176. Though he was rich,

  177. yet for your sakes he became poor,

  178. that you,

  179. through his poverty,

  180. might become rich.

  181. So why should you work out your own salvation?

  182. Why should you obey King Jesus?

  183. Number one,

  184. let's go into this mine of God's word

  185. and let's pull out a treasure.

  186. You should obey the Lord Jesus Christ

  187. because it's the logical thing to do.

  188. Another way of saying that is

  189. if you don't obey this Savior

  190. who humbled himself to such an extent

  191. and who is exalted above all,

  192. if you don't obey him, you're crazy.

  193. The word therefore,

  194. it means it's the only logical,

  195. consecutive response.

  196. The word therefore means

  197. it's designed as the result of his mission.

  198. Christ's mission to descend and to save you.

  199. The purpose of that is

  200. so that you would obey him as your king.

  201. For by grace you have been saved through faith

  202. and this is not your own doing.

  203. It is the gift of God,

  204. not a result of work

  205. so that no man may boast.

  206. For we are his workmanship

  207. created in Christ Jesus

  208. for good works,

  209. which God prepared beforehand

  210. that we should walk in them.

  211. Ephesians 2, 8 through 10.

  212. So obey Jesus Christ.

  213. Therefore,

  214. obey him because it's

  215. the only logical response.

  216. It's the designed result

  217. of his mission for your life.

  218. Number two,

  219. obey Jesus Christ

  220. because you are beloved in Christ.

  221. Look at verse 12 again.

  222. This is how he addresses the church.

  223. He calls them my beloved.

  224. He can say,

  225. these are my beloved people

  226. because Christ has called me beloved.

  227. And in him,

  228. we are the beloved bride of Christ.

  229. The New Testament,

  230. every single book

  231. by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit

  232. refers to Christians,

  233. to you and me,

  234. to the church,

  235. as the beloved of Christ.

  236. That's your identity.

  237. You should obey him

  238. because you have been adopted

  239. lovingly into his family.

  240. If we have the mind of Christ in us,

  241. this is how we will view one another

  242. as a beloved brother or sister

  243. in Christ.

  244. We obey in love as a child.

  245. Like the prodigal son

  246. who's now in the father's house.

  247. The father needs something,

  248. notices something,

  249. or just has regular work

  250. that needs to be done.

  251. It's a delight for that prodigal son.

  252. I'm just happy to be in my father's house.

  253. It's no chore.

  254. I love my father.

  255. John Calvin commented,

  256. obedience is the evidence of that honor

  257. which children owe their parents.

  258. So obey because you are

  259. a beloved child of God in Christ.

  260. Number three,

  261. obey our Lord Jesus Christ

  262. because you are called by God.

  263. Obey Jesus Christ

  264. because you are called by God.

  265. When he says in verse 12,

  266. just as you have always obeyed,

  267. that word obeyed,

  268. it means listen,

  269. attend,

  270. answer.

  271. To give you an example,

  272. in Acts 12, 13,

  273. when Peter knocked at the door

  274. of the gate

  275. and a servant girl named Rhoda

  276. came to respond,

  277. it's the same word.

  278. She came to obey,

  279. to answer,

  280. to attend,

  281. or to respond

  282. to that knock at the door.

  283. In the book of Revelation,

  284. Revelation chapter 3,

    Revelation 3:20

  285. verse 20,

  286. to the church in Laodicea,

  287. Jesus says,

  288. behold,

  289. I stand at the door

  290. and knock.

  291. If any man will hear my voice

  292. and open the door,

  293. I will come in

  294. and sup with him

  295. and he with me.

  296. And he's calling the church

  297. collectively

  298. to respond,

  299. to obey,

  300. attend,

  301. come to Christ.

  302. He calls you.

  303. He's calling you by name.

  304. So you obey our Lord Jesus Christ

  305. because you are called

  306. by God to respond.

  307. Number four,

  308. you obey our Lord Jesus Christ

  309. for his sake alone.

  310. You obey him for his own sake.

  311. Paul writes to the church,

  312. not only in my presence,

  313. but now much more

  314. in my absence.

  315. You'll notice how he said,

  316. in my presence,

  317. you obeyed.

  318. But now he says,

  319. much more in my absence,

  320. work it out.

  321. And so when Paul is with them,

  322. it's this sense of

  323. obey,

  324. obey,

  325. you know,

  326. like little children.

  327. Do what you're told,

  328. follow the instructions.

  329. Now he's absent.

  330. The Lord has removed him.

  331. They need to mature.

  332. They need to go into the mind

  333. and work it out

  334. for themselves

  335. from the scriptures.

  336. They need to,

  337. they need to own it

  338. for themselves now.

  339. Don't just do

  340. what the apostle's telling you.

  341. Go work it out.

  342. Grow in your maturity.

  343. Do it for Christ's sake alone.

  344. Let me put it this way.

  345. We can only work out

  346. what God has worked in us.

  347. So if you are not

  348. a follower of Jesus,

  349. you don't have to obey

  350. these things.

  351. In fact,

  352. if you do,

  353. it'll be probably

  354. under the flesh

  355. trying to save yourself.

  356. Don't take the commands

  357. of the Bible

  358. as rules

  359. if you don't have

  360. a relationship with God.

  361. famous expression

  362. is that

  363. rules without relationship

  364. produce rebellion.

  365. But if Jesus

  366. is the one

  367. who has called you,

  368. if you know him,

  369. if you've tasted

  370. of his steadfast love

  371. toward you

  372. and his kindness

  373. and you don't deserve it,

  374. you have a relationship

  375. with him,

  376. he's your king,

  377. he's exalted,

  378. then your behavior

  379. will flow

  380. from your belief.

  381. you will obey

  382. King Jesus

  383. because you have

  384. a relationship

  385. with him

  386. and you will do it

  387. for his sake alone.

  388. Verse 5,

  389. I'm sorry,

  390. verse 12 says,

  391. work it out.

  392. So I said,

  393. don't work it out

  394. unless God's worked it in you.

  395. What do we mean by that?

  396. I mean that

  397. you should only obey Jesus

  398. if he has already

  399. worked his salvation

  400. in you.

  401. And how does he do that?

  402. The Bible teaches

  403. that God implants

  404. by the ministry

  405. of the Holy Spirit

  406. the redemption

  407. of our soul.

  408. He puts it inside

  409. of you.

  410. Christ accomplished

  411. the redemption

  412. one time for all.

  413. And the Holy Spirit

  414. applies the redemption

  415. that Christ accomplished

  416. in his timing

  417. in each individual soul.

  418. As we work out

  419. the new life

  420. that God implanted

  421. in us,

  422. his saving grace

  423. becomes more and more evident

  424. within the Christian community.

  425. Moises Silva commented

  426. that personal salvation

  427. will manifest itself

  428. primarily

  429. in healthy relationships

  430. within the Christian community.

  431. That's the natural

  432. outworking

  433. of a regenerated heart.

  434. They will know

  435. you are Christians

  436. by your love.

  437. Love one another.

  438. This is the outworking

  439. of that redemption

  440. that the Holy Spirit

  441. applies.

  442. Number six,

  443. obey the Lord Jesus Christ

  444. because the salvation

  445. is already your own.

  446. Obey because this salvation

  447. is already yours.

  448. He's already redeemed

  449. his people.

  450. And when he says

  451. work out your own salvation,

  452. it's in the plural.

  453. It's for the church congregation

  454. gathered together.

  455. It's mutual.

  456. It's corporate.

  457. He says,

  458. Church,

  459. when you are gathered

  460. together

  461. in the name of Christ,

  462. grow in your understanding

  463. of all that Christ

  464. accomplished for you.

  465. First Peter 1.9

  466. says,

  467. The end of your faith

  468. is the salvation

  469. of your souls.

  470. The end of your faith

  471. is the salvation

  472. of your souls.

  473. This whole walk

  474. by faith

  475. in this life

  476. is for your final salvation.

  477. Salvation takes

  478. the whole scope

  479. of our life

  480. in Christ

  481. now on this earth.

  482. Every outworking

  483. of it.

  484. Salvation means

  485. delivered,

  486. preserved,

  487. safe.

  488. So he's saying,

  489. Church,

  490. go dig through

  491. the scriptures together.

  492. Come to Sunday school.

  493. Discuss

  494. what's in the Bible.

  495. Meet with one another.

  496. Gather in his name.

  497. Study the Bible together.

  498. Ask these questions.

  499. Work it out.

  500. How is it

  501. that you are delivered?

  502. How is it, Christian,

  503. that you are safe

  504. in Christ?

  505. How is it

  506. that we,

  507. as his church,

  508. already belong to him?

  509. How is it

  510. that this salvation

  511. is already our own?

  512. It's already ours.

  513. Let's grab hold

  514. together

  515. of his promises

  516. and encourage

  517. one another

  518. with the word

  519. of scripture.

  520. number seven,

  521. obey our Lord

  522. Jesus Christ

  523. with fear.

  524. Obey

  525. without ever

  526. forgetting

  527. that you live

  528. in the holy

  529. inner courtroom

  530. of God

  531. the creator.

  532. Romans 13,

  533. seven says,

  534. we are to show fear

  535. to whom

  536. reverential fear

  537. is due.

  538. There's a healthy

  539. fear of respect

  540. and reverence

  541. that every man

  542. owes

  543. to an authority.

  544. Sinclair Ferguson's

  545. comment is that

  546. God is God

  547. and you are

  548. but one of his

  549. creatures.

  550. Your only joy

  551. is to be found

  552. in obeying him.

  553. So obey God

  554. in this reverential

  555. fear because

  556. that's what you

  557. owe him.

  558. Now fear

  559. is also the emotion

  560. that causes us

  561. to flee

  562. and run away

  563. from something.

  564. The Bible does

  565. tell Christians

  566. to flee temptation.

  567. We need to

  568. obey him

  569. with fear

  570. of ever grieving

  571. such a loving

  572. Savior.

  573. That should be

  574. a fear

  575. in our lives.

  576. This one

  577. stretches me

  578. but according

  579. to scripture

  580. we are also

  581. to fear

  582. the thought

  583. of forsaking

  584. God.

  585. See,

  586. he gives us

  587. the gift of faith

  588. and he's also

  589. the one who

  590. preserves us

  591. with faith

  592. so that we

  593. won't forsake him.

  594. But we need

  595. to have a healthy

  596. fear that if it

  597. were left to myself

  598. I would forsake him.

  599. My faith

  600. would run out.

  601. Hebrews 4,

  602. 1 says,

  603. since a promise

  604. remains for

  605. entering his rest

  606. let us fear

  607. lest any of you

  608. seem to have

  609. come short of it.

  610. We obey him

  611. knowing that this

  612. life is temporary

  613. and the eternal

  614. state of our souls

  615. is with God.

  616. We obey him

  617. with a reverence

  618. and a fear

  619. a total dependence

  620. on him

  621. preserving us.

  622. Number 8

  623. obey the Lord

  624. Jesus Christ

  625. with trembling.

  626. tremble

  627. at God's

  628. majestic

  629. glory.

  630. See,

  631. the glory

  632. of the Lord

  633. will knock us

  634. on the floor.

  635. The angels

  636. swarm around

  637. the presence

  638. of the Lord

  639. and the angels

  640. have to cover

  641. their glorious

  642. spiritual faces

  643. in the presence

  644. of the Holy God.

  645. And when just

  646. one of those angels

  647. who's at the throne

  648. of God

  649. appears on earth

  650. look at the reaction

  651. of a human being

  652. like us.

  653. Mark 16

  654. Mary Magdalene

  655. and Mary

  656. the mother of James

  657. they came

  658. and they saw

  659. Christ's tomb

  660. empty

  661. and the angel

  662. appeared to them

  663. just one.

  664. Then they went out

  665. and fled

  666. from the tomb

  667. for trembling

  668. and astonishment

  669. were gripping them

  670. and they said

  671. nothing to anyone

  672. for they were afraid.

  673. When we realize

  674. that we're living

  675. our life

  676. quorum Deo

  677. before the face

  678. of God

  679. we should tremble.

  680. we should tremble

  681. at the thought

  682. that if Christ

  683. were not there

  684. to shield us

  685. from the holiness

  686. of God

  687. we would melt.

  688. We should tremble

  689. at the thought

  690. of if Christ

  691. had left us

  692. going on the way

  693. that our flesh

  694. wants to walk

  695. our fate

  696. is eternal death

  697. and destruction.

  698. We should tremble

  699. and it's a good

  700. loving tremble

  701. because it pulls us

  702. back to submission

  703. to be on our face

  704. before God

  705. and to obey Him

  706. with such trembling.

  707. See God is the one

  708. who made you able

  709. to respond to Him

  710. by grace

  711. and that doesn't

  712. diminish

  713. the fact that

  714. we are now

  715. responsible.

  716. He made us

  717. able to respond

  718. and John Chrysostom

  719. who was also

  720. a native Greek speaker

  721. he commented

  722. very early on

  723. in the history

  724. of the church

  725. the language

  726. is so strong

  727. here to work out

  728. your salvation

  729. with fear

  730. and trembling

  731. it implies

  732. great effort

  733. with every care

  734. bring about

  735. this obedience

  736. run

  737. as though you're

  738. trembling before God

  739. the Holy God

  740. not to work

  741. for any salvation

  742. but because you realize

  743. how great

  744. is the salvation

  745. He's already

  746. given you in Christ

  747. there's a healthy

  748. trembling

  749. in our obedience.

  750. Number nine

  751. obey our Lord Jesus Christ

  752. with confidence

  753. that He is working

  754. in you.

  755. Obey

  756. the Lord Jesus Christ

  757. with the confidence

  758. that as you obey

  759. it is God Himself

  760. who works in you.

  761. Do you see this

  762. in verse 13?

  763. Hold on to this promise

  764. it is God Himself

  765. who works in you.

  766. How does God work

  767. in His people?

  768. It's the Holy Spirit

  769. dwelling inside the believer

  770. and it's through

  771. the means that He's provided

  772. through the ministry

  773. of His Word

  774. through prayer

  775. and through the sacraments.

  776. 1 Thessalonians 2.13

  777. says the Word of God

  778. is at work

  779. in you

  780. who believe.

  781. And our verse here

  782. for today

  783. says that it is

  784. God Himself

  785. who works

  786. in you.

  787. Matthew Henry's

  788. encouragement to us

  789. is work

  790. for God works.

  791. Be ready

  792. to comply

  793. with every discovery

  794. of the will of God.

  795. Go on

  796. in the Christian faith

  797. in utter dependence

  798. upon the grace

  799. of God.

  800. Obey

  801. with confidence

  802. that God

  803. is working

  804. in you.

  805. Number 10.

  806. Obey

  807. because

  808. it is God

  809. who works in you

  810. to will.

  811. Obey

  812. because God

  813. is giving you

  814. the will

  815. to obey Him.

  816. James Montgomery

  817. Boyce pointed out

  818. there are three

  819. aspects of your life

  820. and mind

  821. that we have

  822. zero willpower

  823. over.

  824. It's our physical

  825. aspect,

  826. intellectual aspect,

  827. and spiritual aspect.

  828. So physically

  829. you can't have

  830. enough willpower

  831. to be in the NBA

  832. most of you

  833. and me.

  834. You can't have

  835. enough willpower

  836. to sing in the opera.

  837. Maybe you know

  838. you just don't have

  839. the vocal cords

  840. or the lungs

  841. or the ear

  842. to hear the pitch.

  843. So we don't have

  844. willpower over

  845. the physical aspects

  846. of our life.

  847. We also don't have

  848. willpower over

  849. our intellectual

  850. aspect.

  851. I can't will

  852. or choose

  853. to have

  854. 50 points

  855. higher on the IQ.

  856. I just can't.

  857. And how about

  858. spiritually?

  859. We also don't have

  860. willpower

  861. spiritually

  862. until

  863. God does

  864. what He says

  865. in verse 13.

  866. He works in you

  867. to will.

  868. Ephesians 2

  869. says you are dead

  870. in your trespasses

  871. and sins

  872. until

  873. like John 3

  874. the Spirit

  875. blows

  876. wherever it wishes

  877. and regenerates you

  878. makes you born again

  879. to open the eyes

  880. of faith

  881. makes you

  882. responsible.

  883. So

  884. spiritually

  885. a dead man

  886. would never

  887. choose to pray.

  888. A dead man

  889. will never decide

  890. to follow Jesus.

  891. But it's God

  892. who works in you

  893. to will

  894. to wish

  895. to desire.

  896. Ephesians 3

  897. 20 says

  898. He is able

  899. to do far

  900. more abundantly

  901. beyond

  902. all that we ask.

  903. We ask

  904. what we want

  905. what we wish

  906. what we will

  907. even beyond

  908. what we understand.

  909. And how does

  910. He do this?

  911. According to

  912. the power

  913. that works

  914. within us.

  915. It's God

  916. who causes you

  917. to will

  918. to obey Him.

  919. Number 11

  920. obey because

  921. it's God

  922. who works

  923. in you

  924. to do.

  925. It's God

  926. who also

  927. works in you

  928. to do.

  929. James 2

  930. 14 says

  931. what does it

  932. profit my brethren

  933. if someone says

  934. he has faith

  935. but does not

  936. have works?

  937. Faith by itself

  938. if it does not

  939. have works

  940. is dead.

  941. Well how can

  942. that be?

  943. This means

  944. that

  945. if your life

  946. is detached

  947. from Christ

  948. if you are not

  949. utterly dependent

  950. on Christ

  951. you can have

  952. no hope

  953. of producing

  954. anything good.

  955. Why?

  956. Because verse 13

  957. says it is God

  958. who works in you

  959. to do.

  960. Put it the other way

  961. have you done

  962. something in obedience

  963. to God this week?

  964. Most likely

  965. all of us have.

  966. Who gets the glory

  967. for that?

  968. You or God?

  969. If you did something

  970. in obedience

  971. to God this week

  972. it's because God

  973. was the one

  974. working in you

  975. to do that very thing.

  976. This is so humbling

  977. and also so liberating.

  978. Charles Spurgeon

  979. felt this beautiful

  980. tension

  981. and the liberty

  982. that comes with it.

  983. He said

  984. I desire

  985. because God

  986. gave me that will

  987. to press forward

  988. for my master

  989. in all things

  990. but if I start

  991. trusting my own

  992. obedience

  993. for my righteousness

  994. then I'll be

  995. ten times worse

  996. than a madman.

  997. Calvin pointed out

  998. the same thing.

  999. He said

  1000. there are

  1001. in any action

  1002. two principal parts

  1003. the will

  1004. and the effective

  1005. power.

  1006. Both

  1007. for sure

  1008. Paul prescribes

  1009. to God

  1010. what more remains

  1011. for us

  1012. to glory in.

  1013. See we can't do

  1014. anything without

  1015. a will

  1016. and without

  1017. the power

  1018. to do it.

  1019. And this verse 13

  1020. says very clearly

  1021. both the will

  1022. and the power

  1023. come from God

  1024. so that he gets

  1025. all the glory.

  1026. and number

  1027. 12

  1028. obey our Lord

  1029. Jesus Christ

  1030. for his good

  1031. pleasure.

  1032. Obey the Lord

  1033. Jesus Christ

  1034. for his good

  1035. pleasure.

  1036. This word can be

  1037. translated as

  1038. for his

  1039. satisfaction

  1040. for his approval.

  1041. in Luke 2

  1042. 14

  1043. the angels

  1044. show up

  1045. and they say

  1046. glory to God

  1047. in the highest

  1048. and on earth

  1049. peace among men

  1050. with whom

  1051. God is

  1052. pleased.

  1053. It's that same

  1054. word

  1055. for his good

  1056. pleasure.

  1057. And the word

  1058. for means

  1059. according to

  1060. or in alignment

  1061. with that which

  1062. pleases God

  1063. which brings

  1064. satisfaction

  1065. satisfaction

  1066. to God.

  1067. So we

  1068. act

  1069. in a way

  1070. that is

  1071. pleasing

  1072. in alignment

  1073. with God's

  1074. good pleasure

  1075. God's satisfaction.

  1076. We put ourselves

  1077. in the path

  1078. of God's

  1079. favor.

  1080. We obey

  1081. because it

  1082. brings pleasure

  1083. to God

  1084. and it puts us

  1085. in the path

  1086. of his

  1087. satisfaction

  1088. his love

  1089. his blessing.

  1090. Someone pointed

  1091. out

  1092. the only

  1093. acceptable

  1094. activity

  1095. on our part

  1096. is that which

  1097. is good

  1098. and pleasing

  1099. to God.

  1100. So it

  1101. controls

  1102. our good

  1103. works.

  1104. And it's

  1105. for the

  1106. purpose of

  1107. God

  1108. pouring out

  1109. his pleasure

  1110. his loving

  1111. kindness

  1112. beyond himself

  1113. through you

  1114. so that you

  1115. also and those

  1116. you are serving

  1117. will benefit

  1118. from the

  1119. overflow

  1120. of his

  1121. grace.

  1122. Those are

  1123. the 12

  1124. reasons I see

  1125. in this

  1126. passage for

  1127. Christians to

  1128. joyfully

  1129. obey him

  1130. have the

  1131. mind of

  1132. Christ

  1133. to put

  1134. the

  1135. passage

  1136. all

  1137. together

  1138. the

  1139. teaching

  1140. here

  1141. is

  1142. this

  1143. Christians

  1144. therefore

  1145. in view

  1146. of Christ's

  1147. humiliation

  1148. and work

  1149. to make

  1150. you

  1151. his

  1152. beloved

  1153. because he

  1154. has caused

  1155. you to

  1156. obey him

  1157. ever since

  1158. he began

  1159. a good

  1160. work in

  1161. you

  1162. now

  1163. work out

  1164. your own

  1165. salvation

  1166. with fear

  1167. and trembling

  1168. trusting

  1169. that it

  1170. is God

  1171. who works

  1172. in you

  1173. both to

  1174. will

  1175. and to

  1176. do

  1177. for his

  1178. good

  1179. pleasure

  1180. Christians

  1181. brothers and

  1182. sisters

  1183. if Christ

  1184. has pulled

  1185. you out

  1186. of that

  1187. pit

  1188. and brought

  1189. you to

  1190. the silver

  1191. mine

  1192. that's packed

  1193. full of

  1194. treasure

  1195. we have

  1196. full

  1197. access

  1198. to the

  1199. bounty of

  1200. heaven

  1201. in Jesus

  1202. Christ

  1203. we need

  1204. to go

  1205. into it

  1206. dig in

  1207. it's the

  1208. word of

  1209. God

  1210. at work

  1211. in you

  1212. who believe

  1213. we need

  1214. to carry

  1215. out in

  1216. our pockets

  1217. all the

  1218. diamonds

  1219. the silver

  1220. and the

  1221. gold

  1222. that we

  1223. can find

  1224. every day

  1225. we will

  1226. have all

  1227. the supply

  1228. we need

  1229. from God

  1230. for life

  1231. and godliness

  1232. the salvation

  1233. this deliverance

  1234. the safety

  1235. is already

  1236. yours

  1237. in Christ

  1238. don't

  1239. sit

  1240. passively

  1241. at the

  1242. edge

  1243. of your

  1244. salvation

  1245. ask God

  1246. to grow

  1247. your desire

  1248. and your

  1249. energy

  1250. to go

  1251. in

  1252. and get

  1253. what he

  1254. has given

  1255. you

  1256. in Christ

  1257. to grab

  1258. hold of

  1259. it

  1260. to possess

  1261. it even

  1262. better

  1263. to know

  1264. each truth

  1265. to enjoy

  1266. each promise

  1267. to savor

  1268. each blessing

  1269. and then thank

  1270. God for the

  1271. abundance of

  1272. his riches

  1273. for you

  1274. what else

  1275. could you do

  1276. but want to

  1277. share this

  1278. this glorious

  1279. abounding

  1280. love of God

  1281. in Christ

  1282. with others

  1283. and that's the

  1284. mission of the

  1285. church

  1286. work out our

  1287. salvation

  1288. together

  1289. all glory

  1290. be to

  1291. God

  1292. let's pray

  1293. father

  1294. thank you

  1295. that you

  1296. made yourself

  1297. poor

  1298. so that we

  1299. might be

  1300. rich

  1301. thank you

  1302. for your

  1303. word

  1304. how it

  1305. reveals to

  1306. us how

  1307. you have

  1308. acted in

  1309. history

  1310. and what

  1311. you intend

  1312. to accomplish

  1313. in our

  1314. lives now

  1315. as your

  1316. people

  1317. we pray

  1318. father
