  1. Well, we continue this morning in Philippians chapter 2.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  2. Our sermon text is verses 14 through 18.

  3. I'm going to begin our reading in verse 12.

  4. So Philippians chapter 2, starting at verse 12.

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  5. This is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, authoritative, and trustworthy word.

  6. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence,

  7. work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

  8. For it is God who works in you, both to will and to do, for his good pleasure.

  9. Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless,

  10. children of God without fault, in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation,

  11. among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life,

  12. so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.

  13. Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith,

  14. I am glad and rejoice with you.

  15. with me.

  16. Thank you.

  17. Let's pray.

  18. Father, we trust your providence.

  19. And that's your sovereign, powerful hand placing your own children in a crooked, broken, dark world.

  20. We confess like the psalmist, it's hard, Father.

  21. And oftentimes we don't have answers.

  22. And we groan and we feel the pain.

  23. Your work truly is light.

  24. Your burden is easy because you have borne it for us.

  25. And you walk with your children as you work out the mind of Christ in us.

  26. We pray, Lord, that as you minister this passage through the preaching of your word today, that you will do that, that you will strengthen your people.

  27. You'll give hope to your children.

  28. And you'll continue to sustain us.

  29. For your glory we ask.

  30. Amen.

  31. Amen.

  32. I had the opportunity of visiting Washington, D.C., seeing all the memorials with a Tier 1 Army Ranger.

  33. One of our stops was the United States Army Museum.

  34. This gentleman said that it's only been in the last five years or so that he's felt ready to start talking about some of the experiences he's had in serving our country in the Army.

  35. And for you children, you've heard of the Navy SEALs.

  36. That's the elite of the elite in the Navy.

  37. Well, that's what the Rangers are in the Army.

  38. You have to come in the top of the class with honors during boot camp.

  39. You have to try out and be at the top of the class to make it and to become a Ranger.

  40. And then from among these elite, I mean, picture the best athletes in the world instead of going into professional sports serving in the Army.

  41. And then to be a Tier 1 Ranger, it means you get the toughest missions.

  42. You go in without dog tags.

  43. You serve.

  44. You fulfill the mission that was given to you.

  45. If you survive, you come back.

  46. If you don't survive, your family won't even know that you died.

  47. That's what it means to be a Tier 1 Army Ranger.

  48. And as I was watching this dad with his eighth grade daughter, I could just see it from a distance.

  49. He wants his mind and all of his experience, all that he's gone through, he wants to pass that on to his daughter in some degree to help her understand all that he's been through, especially at the Army Museum.

  50. And he's as tough as they get.

  51. This man, he also fought in the MMA for five years professionally.

  52. He is as tough as they get.

  53. But when it was just he and I walking around, he said, I'm afraid I'm going to choke up a little bit.

  54. This man, it meant so much to him.

  55. Well, at the end of one of those days, it started to snow a little bit.

  56. And so everybody's complaining and grumbling about feeling cold, even though they're from Colorado and have no excuse.

  57. The next day, he was laughing about this and smiling.

  58. He said, I just looked at my daughter and said, well, see, now you've learned your lesson.

  59. Complaining didn't make you any warmer.

  60. So, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, my question for us today from this passage is, God, being your father, is he working out his mind into you?

  61. Is God working out the mind of Christ in you, his children?

  62. That's what he desires to do and that's what he promises to do.

  63. So, we've got six observations as we work through these verses.

  64. As I mentioned, our sermon text is starting at verse 14.

  65. But to understand our text, we need the context.

  66. So, my first question for us is this.

  67. What does the mind of Christ include?

  68. What does the mind of Christ include?

  69. Because verse 14 says, do all things.

  70. What all does that include?

  71. All things.

  72. And to understand what doing the mind of Christ or doing all things means, we need to get these verses leading up to that.

  73. So, look in your Bible back at Philippians chapter 2, verse 1.

    Philippians 2:1

  74. Who is it that acts according to God's good pleasure?

  75. Who is it that does all things according to the mind of Christ?

  76. It's those who enjoy any consolation in Christ.

  77. Any comfort of love.

  78. Any fellowship of the Spirit.

  79. Any affection and mercy.

  80. Look at Philippians 2, verse 12.

    Philippians 2:12

  81. It's for you who are working out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

  82. Verse 13.

  83. Knowing all the while that it is God who works in you.

  84. Both to will and to do according to his good pleasure.

  85. So, now we get to verse 14.

  86. To do all things is controlled by the verse right before it.

  87. By verse 13.

  88. All things that align with God's good pleasure.

  89. How do we know what is God's good pleasure?

  90. Well, he's given his nature, his attributes, his character, his holiness, and revealed it to his people in the Bible.

  91. So, we know the good pleasure of God according to the word of God.

  92. But I want to emphasize that to do all things included here are in the mind of Christ.

  93. It's action.

  94. The Christian life is not passive.

  95. And to have a high view of God's sovereign grace.

  96. It does not in any way diminish the action, the energy, the power of God in his people.

  97. In fact, I think we could make a strong argument that that's the only source to energize it.

  98. If you have a high view of God's sovereign grace in saving you and adopting you, which you should, that's biblical.

  99. Then you will have a high view of God's power and sovereignty and ongoing continual grace to energize you and propel you and push you forward into action.

  100. Do all things.

  101. What does the mind of Christ include?

  102. We don't want to be trapped by a fear of committing sins so much that we then err on the other side of omitting.

  103. Sins of omission.

  104. We're not doing all these things that God has commanded.

  105. To give you a sampling, and this is how we should read our Bibles.

  106. What is God's instruction, his good pleasure for my life in Christ?

  107. Take Matthew 28, for example.

  108. Make disciples.

  109. Baptize them.

  110. Teaching them to obey all that I command.

  111. Luke 22, 19 says,

  112. Do this, this Lord's Supper, breaking the bread, pouring out the cup.

  113. Do this in remembrance of me.

  114. The Christian life is a life of action.

  115. And us together as a church, Mark 16, we're told,

  116. Go into all the world.

  117. Proclaim the gospel.

  118. To the whole creation.

  119. Do all these things for the glory of God.

  120. And it's both what we are doing, the mission of the church, but it's also the way that we work and serve and act as the family of God right here.

  121. When we gather weekly, midweek, one-on-one, throughout the days.

  122. This is also how we are to do all those things.

  123. It controls our interactions with one another.

  124. James 5, 16.

  125. James 5, 16.

  126. Pray for each other.

  127. This is what it includes to work out the mind of Christ.

  128. 1 Thessalonians 3, 12.

  129. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.

  130. Hebrews 10, 24.

  131. Spur one another on toward love and good deeds.

  132. Hebrews 10, 25.

  133. Encourage one another.

  134. Colossians 3, 16.

  135. Admonish one another.

  136. 1 Thessalonians 5, 11.

  137. Build each other up.

  138. Finally, make your love increase and overflow for each other.

  139. Do all things.

  140. Having the mind of Christ includes all of this.

  141. Is Christ working out His mind in you?

  142. Does this describe the way you treat His people?

  143. The way you conduct yourself in this world?

  144. That's what the mind of Christ includes.

  145. All things.

  146. A life of action and obedience.

  147. Now what does the mind of Christ exclude?

  148. That's what Paul sets up next in this text.

  149. Verse 14 says, do all things.

  150. And now here comes the exclusion.

  151. Without complaining and disputing.

  152. What does the mind of Christ exclude?

  153. Some translations will say complaining and disputing.

  154. Others will say grumbling and bickering.

  155. Maybe murmuring and arguing.

  156. So let's look at those two words.

  157. Grumbling.

  158. This was a fun word for me to learn about.

  159. It's an onomatopoeia.

  160. You know what that is?

  161. It's a word that, the word itself sounds like the thing it's describing.

  162. So an example is murmuring.

  163. That's an onomatopoeia as well.

  164. You hear people murmuring.

  165. Murmur, murmur, murmur, murmur.

  166. It just sounds like a low grumbling among those people.

  167. In Hebrew, it's gugasman.

  168. Gugasman, gugasman, gugasman, gugasman, gugasman.

  169. Murmur, murmur, murmur.

  170. It's an onomatopoeia.

  171. It means dissatisfied complaining against others.

  172. And it's a reference, this phrase together, grumbling and bickering.

  173. It's a reference to the Old Testament that's brought up often, as we saw in Sunday school, throughout the Bible.

  174. I'll give you a quick sampling would be Numbers 14, 27.

  175. Moses hears the grumbling of the people, and he responds properly like a psalmist.

  176. So what Moses does is not necessarily grumbling to God.

  177. It's prayer.

  178. God wants us to pray.

  179. Take it to him.

  180. And Moses asks God, how long?

  181. There's the how long, O Lord, like the Psalms.

  182. How long shall I bear with this evil congregation who are grumbling against me?

  183. I have heard their complaints, says God.

  184. And in Exodus 16, 8, listen to this.

  185. Yahweh hears your grumblings.

  186. And Moses tells the people, your grumblings are not against me or Yahweh's appointed servants.

  187. Your grumblings are against Yahweh himself.

  188. That's what God taught Moses as he prayed to him.

  189. So at the root of grumbling is the doubt.

  190. It's a proud doubting of God.

  191. It's when Satan, using your own flesh and your own remaining sin,

  192. he allows your thoughts to accuse God to you.

  193. Now, bickering, it's similar.

  194. The root word for bickering is dialogism.

  195. So it's where we get the English word for dialogue.

  196. So it's not a good type of dialogue where we're working toward truth.

  197. It's the opposite.

  198. In English, it's sometimes translated reasonings.

  199. But in the negative.

  200. So it means petty disputes, questioning, and inward doubting of God once again.

  201. So these two are related.

  202. Grumbling and bickering.

  203. Listen to a couple examples of where this same word is used in the New Testament.

  204. For bickering or arguing.

  205. In Luke 9, 26,

  206. An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest.

  207. See, they're dialoguing about which of them is the greatest.

  208. They're feeding their flesh and their pride.

  209. It's that type of dialoguing that is excluded from the mind of Christ.

  210. And it says that Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts,

  211. he knew what their hearts were telling them.

  212. It was the pride of their flesh puffing them up.

  213. And then Romans 21, 121,

  214. We read that although they knew God,

  215. they did not glorify him as God nor give thanks,

  216. but became futile in their minds,

  217. and their foolish hearts were darkened.

  218. It's the same idea for an inward reasoning

  219. that leads to bickering and arguing.

  220. Why is it that we bicker and argue?

  221. It's because we don't trust God

  222. and because we think we want what we think we deserve.

  223. So I think I deserve something better

  224. than what God in his providence is making me endure.

  225. We need to return to the scripture

  226. and see what is it that I deserve.

  227. If I feel like God is being unjust,

  228. what is justice for me?

  229. Lamentations 3 says it so clearly.

  230. Lamentations 3, 21,

  231. It is the Lord's mercies alone

  232. that we are not consumed

  233. because of the compassions of God

  234. that do not fail.

  235. See, if God were to treat us

  236. the way we really deserve,

  237. his wrath would burst out like flames

  238. and consume people

  239. who don't trust him

  240. and who are doubting him

  241. and who are accusing God

  242. in our own minds and in our own hearts.

  243. So the mind of Christ,

  244. it excludes this unreasonable arrogance

  245. against God.

  246. Words against others,

  247. disputing,

  248. petty questioning of God.

  249. These things are a waste of time.

  250. They rob the church of energy,

  251. of focus,

  252. and of power.

  253. Why is it unreasonable

  254. to grumble against God?

  255. It's unreasonable

  256. because we're out of touch with reality.

  257. We have a low view of God

  258. and a high view of ourself.

  259. And that's the most unreasonable way to think.

  260. So if we're grumbling,

  261. it's because we need to be humbled.

  262. We need to be reasonable once again

  263. with what we deserve.

  264. Philippians 4, 5 says,

  265. let your reasonableness be known to all.

  266. Would you please turn there?

  267. Flip your page just one over.

  268. Philippians 4,

  269. look at verse 5.

  270. Let your reasonableness be known to all.

  271. Christians ought to be

  272. the most reasonable people around.

  273. We have a walk with the Lord

  274. that requires faith.

  275. It's not by sight,

  276. but it's not contrary to reason.

  277. It's the only right response

  278. to a rational mind.

  279. If you're like me,

  280. you're stuck.

  281. Okay, I'm very clear that

  282. the mind of Christ

  283. has to exclude

  284. a spirit in my heart

  285. of grumbling and arguing

  286. and accusing God

  287. and thinking I deserve something better.

  288. It has to exclude that,

  289. but how?

  290. Can I just tell those thoughts

  291. to go away,

  292. or how do I do that?

  293. So right after this instruction,

  294. Philippians 4, 5,

  295. let your reasonableness be known to all.

  296. Skip down to verse 8.

  297. Look at how we do this.

  298. Paul says to this same audience

  299. in Philippi,

  300. Philippians 4, 8,

  301. whatever is true,

  302. whatever is honorable,

  303. whatever is just,

  304. whatever is pure,

  305. whatever is lovely,

  306. whatever is commendable,

  307. if there is any excellence,

  308. if there is anything worthy of praise,

  309. think about these things.

  310. That's how we have the mind of Christ.

  311. It's again an action,

  312. an active fighting

  313. against our own flesh and our pride,

  314. an active reminder

  315. of my position

  316. before the Holy God Creator,

  317. only through Christ.

  318. And that's what the mind of Christ excludes.

  319. Number three,

  320. what works,

  321. I'm sorry,

  322. Christ works out His mind in you

  323. for several reasons.

  324. And the first one is,

  325. it's for your own good.

  326. So how does this happen

  327. and for what purpose?

  328. Christ is working out

  329. the mind of Christ

  330. in you who belong to Him

  331. for your own good.

  332. That's the first reason.

  333. It's for your own good.

  334. Turn back to Philippians 2.

  335. Let's look at verse 15.

  336. Verse 15.

  337. Do all things.

  338. Work out the mind of Christ.

  339. Verse 15.

  340. That you may become blameless

  341. and harmless,

  342. children of God

  343. without fault.

  344. When He uses this word blameless,

  345. what comes to mind

  346. for this congregation

  347. is the sacrifice

  348. that God has deemed acceptable.

  349. blameless

  350. and harmless

  351. or maybe a better translation

  352. is pure.

  353. Now if you look at verse 17,

  354. He paints this metaphor

  355. even more descriptively.

  356. In verse 17,

  357. He says how He is being poured out.

  358. But look at verse 17.

  359. What is Paul being poured out upon?

  360. It's the sacrifice

  361. and service

  362. of your faith.

  363. So the picture is

  364. a faith

  365. that's more and more

  366. acceptable to God.

  367. It's thoughts,

  368. doctrines,

  369. a faith

  370. that God can see

  371. as more and more

  372. in alignment

  373. with the mind of Christ.

  374. More and more blameless

  375. of a faith

  376. that works itself out

  377. in every aspect

  378. of our lives.

  379. So it's our faith

  380. that is the instrument

  381. of our sanctification.

  382. sanctification.

  383. Sanctification means

  384. we're growing

  385. in Christ-likeness.

  386. In terms of being brought

  387. into the family of God,

  388. we know that it's

  389. Christ alone.

  390. He's the only

  391. blameless sacrifice.

  392. None of us can stand

  393. before God

  394. on our own terms

  395. and say,

  396. look at my life.

  397. I present it to you.

  398. It's perfect.

  399. Accept me

  400. on my own righteousness.

  401. None can do that.

  402. Christ is the blameless

  403. sacrifice of God.

  404. But because Christ

  405. has accomplished

  406. this perfect,

  407. blameless sacrifice

  408. that God demands

  409. and God requires

  410. because He's just

  411. and holy,

  412. then Christ turns around

  413. in the covenant of grace

  414. and He says,

  415. receive me by faith

  416. and you share

  417. in all the blessings

  418. that I've acquired

  419. for you.

  420. And so through faith,

  421. God is making you

  422. now more and more

  423. like Christ.

  424. Your union to Christ

  425. transforms you.

  426. The next word is harmless.

  427. So blameless and harmless.

  428. Other translations

  429. will have pure or innocent.

  430. It means that you're unmixed,

  431. pure.

  432. Your service to God

  433. is not corrupted

  434. by your own sins

  435. or by your own bad intentions.

  436. That word is used

  437. in Mark 10, 16

  438. where Jesus says,

  439. be pure or innocent

  440. as doves.

  441. And in Romans 16, 9,

  442. Paul writes to the church,

  443. I am rejoicing over you,

  444. but I want you to be wise

  445. in what is good

  446. and innocent

  447. in what is evil.

  448. So Christ works out

  449. His mind in you

  450. for your own good

  451. so that your thoughts

  452. can be in a line

  453. with Christ.

  454. You don't have to

  455. be bound by these

  456. evil tendencies

  457. and these thoughts

  458. overwhelming

  459. and dominating you

  460. any longer.

  461. He's ransomed you,

  462. rescued you out of darkness.

  463. You belong to Him

  464. and it's for your good

  465. that He's washing your mind.

  466. Every believer

  467. who stands before God

  468. is united to God

  469. and is called

  470. a child of God

  471. without fault.

  472. in 2 Corinthians 5, 21,

  473. we read that

  474. for our sake

  475. the Father made Him

  476. to be sin

  477. who knew no sin

  478. so that in Him

  479. we might become

  480. the righteousness

  481. of God.

  482. you stand in Christ

  483. you stand in Christ

  484. righteous

  485. because Christ

  486. became sin

  487. for you

  488. and for me.

  489. So now you stand

  490. as His child

  491. faultless

  492. but He's still

  493. for your own good

  494. sanctifying you

  495. working out

  496. His mind

  497. in you

  498. as a child

  499. of God.

  500. A helpful illustration

  501. for me

  502. of this was

  503. a brother and a sister

  504. inside their bedroom.

  505. The door is closed

  506. but it's a very thin door

  507. and there's

  508. one of the parents

  509. standing right at the door

  510. and you can hear

  511. everything that they are saying.

  512. So our standing

  513. is as children of God

  514. and our standing

  515. before Him

  516. it should exclude

  517. grumbling and complaining

  518. like a parent

  519. doesn't want to hear

  520. the children

  521. talking bad about

  522. mom or dad

  523. or what they made us do

  524. or what they're

  525. not letting us do

  526. this weekend

  527. or something like that.

  528. The parents

  529. they know the good pleasure

  530. of their home

  531. and their will

  532. for their children

  533. and so for the children

  534. the right posture

  535. is to know

  536. God is right here.

  537. He's with His children.

  538. We belong to Him.

  539. We're pure

  540. and He wants us

  541. to have His own mind.

  542. Number four

  543. Christ works out

  544. His mind

  545. in you

  546. not only for your good

  547. but for the good

  548. of unbelievers

  549. as well.

  550. It's for the good

  551. of unbelievers

  552. of the world

  553. that Christ is working

  554. out His mind

  555. in the church.

  556. He says in this

  557. same verse

  558. that you're

  559. children of God

  560. in the midst

  561. of a crooked

  562. and perverse

  563. generation

  564. among whom

  565. you shine

  566. as lights

  567. in the world.

  568. The world

  569. is described

  570. as crooked.

  571. The Greek word

  572. is skolios.

  573. Those of you

  574. in the medical field

  575. you know

  576. that sounds familiar

  577. skolios.

  578. Skoliosis

  579. is a chronic condition

  580. where your backbone

  581. is different

  582. than what God

  583. designed.

  584. Skoliosis

  585. is a disease

  586. you can inherit

  587. from a crooked

  588. ancestor

  589. we could say.

  590. It's really

  591. the perfect word

  592. to describe

  593. our condition.

  594. One of the symptoms

  595. of having

  596. a crooked

  597. backbone

  598. is that your head

  599. is off-center.

  600. Isn't that a perfect

  601. word

  602. to describe

  603. this world

  604. outside of Christ?

  605. your head

  606. is off-center

  607. your backbone

  608. is not what

  609. God designed

  610. it to be

  611. and you inherit

  612. this condition

  613. from Adam's fall.

  614. The world's also

  615. described as

  616. perverse.

  617. Perverse

  618. means distorted

  619. disposed

  620. to be contrary

  621. stubborn

  622. obstinate

  623. in the wrong.

  624. Well

  625. outside of Christ

  626. every generation

  627. since Adam

  628. is crooked

  629. and perverse.

  630. That's the world

  631. Jew

  632. and Gentile

  633. alike.

  634. That's why

  635. Christ had to come

  636. from a virgin

  637. not inheriting

  638. this fallen state

  639. the only

  640. righteous

  641. man

  642. being truly

  643. God.

  644. And we're told

  645. as Christians

  646. now united

  647. to Christ

  648. in the midst

  649. of this crooked

  650. and perverse

  651. generation

  652. we will shine.

  653. so we don't

  654. get taken

  655. out

  656. of this

  657. generation.

  658. We're not

  659. removed

  660. from the

  661. dark world

  662. we're in

  663. the midst

  664. of it.

  665. Just as

  666. the Lord

  667. prepares a

  668. table

  669. before me

  670. in the

  671. presence

  672. of mine

  673. enemies.

  674. Psalm

  675. 23.

  676. Psalm

  677. 57

  678. 4 is the

  679. prayer

  680. my soul

  681. is in

  682. the midst

  683. of lions.

  684. I lie

  685. down

  686. amid

  687. fiery

  688. beasts

  689. the children

  690. of man

  691. whose teeth

  692. are spears

  693. and arrows

  694. whose tongues

  695. are sharp

  696. swords.

  697. And there's

  698. the Lord

  699. Jesus Christ

  700. with his

  701. church

  702. in the midst

  703. of those

  704. enemies

  705. those lions

  706. and those

  707. fiery

  708. beasts

  709. commanding

  710. us as

  711. his church

  712. in Matthew

  713. 5 44

  714. love

  715. your enemies

  716. pray for

  717. those who

  718. persecute you

  719. so that

  720. you may

  721. be sons

  722. of your

  723. father

  724. who is

  725. in heaven.

  726. So what

  727. this means

  728. is that as

  729. the church

  730. is left

  731. in the

  732. world

  733. the world

  734. will hate

  735. the church

  736. because it

  737. hated

  738. Christ

  739. first.

  740. We're in

  741. a spiritual

  742. warfare.

  743. We are

  744. treated as

  745. ones who

  746. don't belong

  747. here because

  748. we don't.

  749. And God

  750. uses that

  751. very persecution

  752. to shine

  753. reflect the

  754. glory of

  755. his holy

  756. nature and

  757. of his

  758. son the

  759. kingdom of

  760. heaven off

  761. of the

  762. people of

  763. God who

  764. he's left

  765. in this

  766. world.

  767. And that's

  768. how this

  769. thought closes

  770. is that

  771. you're in

  772. the world

  773. that's

  774. dark but

  775. you among

  776. them shine

  777. as light.

  778. This reference

  779. to a

  780. shining light

  781. in the

  782. darkness

  783. it's a

  784. messianic

  785. prophecy

  786. it's how

  787. Christ's

  788. work will

  789. be described.

  790. We get this

  791. in many

  792. places to

  793. give you a

  794. sampling.

  795. We have

  796. Isaiah 42

  797. 6 where

  798. the father

  799. promises of

  800. the son I

  801. will give

  802. you as a

  803. covenant for

  804. the people a

  805. light for the

  806. nations like

  807. we read

  808. today.

  809. That's also

  810. opened up a

  811. bit more in

  812. Isaiah 49.

  813. So when our

  814. Lord Jesus

  815. comes to

  816. accomplish the

  817. mission the

  818. father gave

  819. him he declares

  820. in John 8

  821. 12 I am

  822. the light of

  823. the world

  824. whoever follows

  825. me will not

  826. walk in

  827. darkness but

  828. will have the

  829. light of

  830. life.

  831. And then we're

  832. told as the

  833. church in

  834. 1 Thessalonians

  835. 5 4 and 5

  836. you are not in

  837. darkness we are

  838. not of the

  839. light.

  840. Brothers you

  841. are all

  842. children of

  843. light and

  844. children of

  845. the day.

  846. Jesus commands

  847. all who have

  848. eyes to see

  849. him he says in

  850. John 12 36

  851. believe in the

  852. light so that

  853. you may become

  854. sons of

  855. light.

  856. It's through

  857. faith in Christ

  858. that you are

  859. adopted as a

  860. son of God and

  861. you become a

  862. light reflecting

  863. his glory.

  864. Matthew 5 14

  865. Jesus says you

  866. are the light

  867. of the world

  868. speaking to his

  869. people who

  870. follow him.

  871. Let your

  872. light shine

  873. before others

  874. so that they

  875. may see your

  876. good works and

  877. give glory to

  878. God your

  879. father who is in

  880. heaven.

  881. See if man

  882. lives in a way

  883. that's different

  884. than the world

  885. and brings glory

  886. back to man

  887. mission failed.

  888. if man lives in

  889. such a way that's

  890. different than the

  891. world and it

  892. brings glory to

  893. God the father

  894. Christ's mission

  895. is accomplished.

  896. The church is the

  897. means God

  898. intended and God

  899. uses to draw

  900. those who are

  901. lost and in

  902. darkness to

  903. himself.

  904. So we don't

  905. want to be a

  906. church of do

  907. gooders that are

  908. bringing glory back

  909. to the church or

  910. back to ourselves.

  911. That's robbing

  912. God of the

  913. mission for which

  914. Christ came.

  915. But instead we

  916. follow Christ.

  917. We accept

  918. persecution.

  919. We endure the

  920. suffering.

  921. And we do it

  922. with joy instead

  923. of grumbling.

  924. And the world

  925. says I got nothing

  926. to make of that.

  927. There's no answer

  928. for that kind of

  929. living.

  930. And it gives glory

  931. to God the

  932. father.

  933. So that's how

  934. Christ working out

  935. his mind in you is

  936. also for the good

  937. of unbelievers to

  938. draw them to God.

  939. And the third

  940. reason is that

  941. Christ works out

  942. his mind in you

  943. is for the good

  944. of the church.

  945. It's for your

  946. good, for the

  947. good of unbelievers

  948. and for the good

  949. of the church.

  950. Look at verse 16.

  951. Paul writes,

  952. holding fast the

  953. word of life so

  954. that I may rejoice

  955. in the day of

  956. Christ.

  957. Paul's asking

  958. them to obey

  959. God so that he

  960. may rejoice on

  961. the day of

  962. Christ.

  963. Paul, as an

  964. apostle who God

  965. is sending out to

  966. call together

  967. churches and

  968. guide them in

  969. appointing elders

  970. and deacons and

  971. setting themselves up

  972. under the ministry

  973. of the word.

  974. He says, when Christ

  975. and I are face to

  976. face, I want to be

  977. able to rejoice at

  978. the work that he's

  979. doing through you,

  980. that your obedience

  981. is being worked out.

  982. It's for the good of

  983. the church that we

  984. need to have the mind

  985. of Christ and grow in

  986. this together.

  987. When he says, hold

  988. fast the word of

  989. life, that means this

  990. word of life, this

  991. gospel, this truth

  992. that God has

  993. revealed of Jesus

  994. Christ.

  995. Possess it.

  996. Grip that for your

  997. assurance.

  998. It also means hold

  999. it fast and hold it

  1000. forth.

  1001. Hold it out to

  1002. others.

  1003. In Homer's

  1004. Odyssey, I'm told

  1005. that the word, the

  1006. same word, was used

  1007. to hold forth wine

  1008. as a gift.

  1009. Propose to the

  1010. world.

  1011. Offer it up, this

  1012. word of life.

  1013. Put it out for

  1014. other people to

  1015. hear and accept.

  1016. And do this with

  1017. your eyes of faith

1018. set on the day of

  1019. Christ.

  1020. The day of Christ.

  1021. We've seen in going

  1022. through Philippians,

  1023. the day of the

  1024. Lord is a reference

  1025. to his second

  1026. coming.

  1027. The glorious return

  1028. of King Jesus.

  1029. So there's the day

  1030. of the Lord with

  1031. that emphasis.

  1032. And then the day

  1033. of Christ, I think

  1034. it's a good insight

  1035. from many who have

  1036. studied this question.

  1037. It's often used less

  1038. about the second

  1039. coming of Christ and

  1040. rather about the day

  1041. when a soul will

  1042. encounter Christ, which

  1043. means you die.

  1044. So at Paul's death,

  1045. that's the day of

  1046. Christ for Paul.

  1047. That's when his body

1048. is left behind and he

1049. is with the Lord in

  1050. glory in his soul.

  1051. Although the Lord, the

1052. day of the Lord is yet

  1053. to come.

1054. So the day of Christ,

  1055. Paul has that day

  1056. of Christ, the day

  1057. when Paul will come

  1058. before the Lord and

  1059. give account for all

  1060. that God's entrusted

  1061. to him.

  1062. And he doesn't want

  1063. to be a worker who's

  1064. ashamed.

1065. He wants to be a

  1066. worker who has labored

  1067. and who is presenting

  1068. back to Christ these

  1069. souls that the Lord

  1070. drew to himself

  1071. through Paul's

  1072. ministry using a

  1073. saved sinner like

  1074. himself.

  1075. This is a strong

  1076. teaching.

  1077. Paul was concerned

  1078. that the quality of

  1079. his life in ministry

  1080. would be evaluated by

  1081. Christ himself.

  1082. Paul's not questioning

  1083. his salvation.

  1084. He's holding fast the

  1085. word of life.

1086. But he has his eyes

1087. set on the day of

  1088. Christ, the day when

  1089. he will give account

1090. for what he was told

1091. to do by the Lord

  1092. himself.

  1093. Hebrews 13 tells

  1094. elders to shepherd the

  1095. flock among you as

  1096. ones who will give

  1097. account to the Lord

  1098. himself.

  1099. Jesus said not many

  1100. should become teachers

  1101. and be very careful

1102. if you cause one of

  1103. these little ones to

  1104. stumble.

1105. It would be better that

  1106. a millstone be tied

1107. around you and drag you

1108. to the depths of the

  1109. ocean.

1110. Because each one has a

  1111. day of Christ.

1112. And we want this day to

1113. be a day of rejoicing.

  1114. Not something that

  1115. anyone should take

  1116. lightly.

1117. But that we should find

  1118. the energy and

  1119. anticipation and fear

  1120. and trembling of that

1121. great day of the Lord.

1122. And it stirs up in us

  1123. not an anxiety, but

  1124. instead it's a joy.

  1125. Rejoicing that that day

  1126. is coming.

1127. He says in verse 16,

1128. that I have not run in

  1129. vain or labored in

  1130. vain.

  1131. He's pressing home in

  1132. the strongest language

  1133. possible.

1134. Not that it depends on

  1135. him.

  1136. He's made that very

  1137. clear.

1138. It's God who works in

1139. you to will and to do

  1140. for his good pleasure.

  1141. He's not stealing glory

  1142. away from God.

  1143. But he's saying I want

1144. to be able to stand

  1145. before Christ with the

1146. energy he did give me

1147. to go and do and the

1148. will he gave me to go

1149. and do and to work out

1150. the mind of Christ in

  1151. me.

1152. Knowing that I was not

  1153. irresponsible with my

  1154. part.

1155. that it truly had the

  1156. intended effect on you

  1157. that God wanted.

  1158. And only God can

  1159. produce that, but he'll

1160. do it to the extent that

  1161. I'm being faithful and

  1162. submissive to what he's

  1163. called me to.

1164. That I have not run in

  1165. vain or labored in

  1166. vain.

1167. What would it be like to

  1168. run in vain?

  1169. Well, this audience at

  1170. Philippi, they're Greek

1171. trained and they know the

1172. great tales and the great

  1173. myths of the ancient

  1174. Greek civilization.

  1175. And they would have,

1176. many of them at least

  1177. been familiar with what

  1178. Herodotus, the Greek

  1179. historian wrote about the

  1180. Greco-Persian wars of

  1181. 490 B.C.

  1182. Especially the famous

  1183. account of a runner.

  1184. His name was

  1185. Pheidippides.

1186. And he was a messenger who

1187. had to run from Athens to

1188. Sparta and asked for help

  1189. because the great Persian

  1190. empire was invading.

  1191. And the Greeks were

  1192. vastly outnumbered.

1193. And who could come and

  1194. help us?

1195. So a runner runs all the

  1196. way, gets there exhausted,

  1197. and calls for help.

1198. Now he would have run in

1199. vain if this stronger army

1200. couldn't have come to the

  1201. help of their friends.

1202. He would have run in vain if

  1203. they heard this message.

  1204. There's a day of death and

  1205. destruction coming.

  1206. We need reinforcements.

  1207. We need action.

1208. And no one takes up the

  1209. spear.

1210. No one puts on the sandals

  1211. to march.

  1212. They stay passive behind.

1213. He would have run in vain.

  1214. And Paul says, I know I'm

  1215. giving you this message.

1216. The day of Christ is coming

  1217. for me soon.

  1218. Stand up.

  1219. Work it out.

1220. Do all these things in a

  1221. way that pleases God.

  1222. Ephesians 5, 8, and 10

1223. says, walk as children of

  1224. light.

1225. The fruit of light is

1226. found in all that is good

  1227. and right and true.

1228. And try to discern what is

  1229. pleasing to God.

  1230. Work it out together.

  1231. Discern together as a

  1232. congregation what is

  1233. pleasing to God.

1234. Walk together as a church,

1235. as light in the world.

  1236. But it's hard.

  1237. What about this situation

  1238. and that one?

  1239. Work it out together.

  1240. Bring those questions to

  1241. one another.

  1242. Father, don't let my

  1243. running be in vain.

1244. The day of Christ is

  1245. coming for you, church.

  1246. For you, congregation.

  1247. Wake up.

  1248. Don't fall asleep.

1249. We need to work out what

  1250. Christ has already

  1251. accomplished for us.

  1252. There's a sense of

  1253. urgency to the Christian

  1254. life.

1255. It's for the good of the

  1256. church that he's putting

1257. the mind of Christ in each

  1258. one of his believers.

1259. And when one of us is

1260. down and weak, the other

1261. one is there to build up

  1262. and encourage and give

  1263. strength.

1264. When one is erring, going

1265. the wrong path, the other

1266. one is there to bring them

1267. back to the truth, back to

1268. the word of God and follow

  1269. Christ together.

1270. Christ works out his mind

1271. in you for the good of the

  1272. church.

1273. Well, the last verse is a

  1274. personal statement Paul makes

  1275. in verses 17 and 18.

  1276. And I think it's for me a

1277. perfect way to pull this

  1278. thought together because I'm

1279. left at the end of this

1280. seeing the example of Christ

  1281. in Philippians 2.

1282. God the Son who humbled

  1283. himself.

1284. And we're told to have the

1285. mind of Christ and look at

  1286. Christ.

  1287. Amen.

1288. But I'm left with the

1289. question, is it even possible

1290. for a saved sinner like me to

1291. live out the mind of Christ?

  1292. Is this even possible?

1293. So Paul gives us three

  1294. examples.

1295. We'll only see one for today.

1296. We'll see the next two next

  1297. week, Lord willing.

1298. The example he gives for today

  1299. is not Christ himself.

  1300. It's an apostle.

1301. And it's Paul, his own life.

1302. But whereas we saw in

  1303. Philippians 2, seven verses

1304. about Jesus Christ and have

1305. the mind of Christ, here we

1306. only get one verse about

  1307. Paul.

  1308. Another example.

  1309. Verse 17, if I am being

1310. poured out as a drink

  1311. offering and the sacrifices

1312. and service of your faith, I

1313. am glad and rejoice with you

  1314. all.

  1315. One sentence.

  1316. He's using a reference to

1317. being poured out as a drink

  1318. offering on a sacrifice.

1319. The name for this is a

  1320. libation.

  1321. A libation.

1322. It could be done with oil or

1323. wine that was poured over a

  1324. burning sacrifice in both

  1325. Jewish and Greek worship.

1326. The purpose of a libation was

1327. to compliment and complete the

  1328. sacrifice and the ceremony.

1329. So Paul says, your faith is the

1330. object that's being offered up

  1331. to God.

1332. It's your faith and service as a

  1333. church.

1334. I'm just here to compliment and

  1335. complete it.

  1336. That's what he's saying.

1337. We have an example of a

1338. libation in the Old Testament.

  1339. I'll give you one.

  1340. It's Numbers 15, 5.

1341. Where God instructs the Old

1342. Testament people to offer with the

1343. burnt offering or the sacrifice

1344. wine for the drink offering for

  1345. each lamb.

1346. So there's a lamb and the Jewish

  1347. people gathering around offering

1348. this lamb as a sacrifice to God

1349. and then the priest takes what

1350. would be about a liter of four

1351. cups of wine and pours it out

  1352. over it.

1353. And the pleasing aroma ascends to

  1354. the Lord.

  1355. The sacrifice is completed.

  1356. It's been sealed.

1357. Paul uses the same reference in

  1358. 2 Timothy 4, 5, and 7.

1359. He says, and this is the last

1360. book he wrote in prison in 2

  1361. Timothy.

1362. He says, I am already being

1363. poured out as a drink offering.

1364. And the time of departure has

  1365. come.

1366. I have fought the good fight.

1367. I have finished the race.

1368. And I have kept the faith.

1369. One commentator pointed out that

1370. Paul sees himself as an addition

1371. to the service and the faith of

1372. the church, not the other way

  1373. around.

1374. And he observed after decades in

  1375. church ministry that this

1376. perspective probably needs to be

1377. held to and taken to heart by

  1378. every single pastor.

1379. It's the faith and the service of

  1380. God's people, the local

1381. congregation that is offered up to

  1382. God.

1383. And any minister, including Paul

1384. himself, is simply there to

  1385. supplement and compliment and

1386. lift up the faith and the service

1387. of a church body to the Lord.

1388. Not the other way around.

1389. Paul says, I am glad and rejoice

1390. with you all for the same reason

1391. you also be glad and rejoice with

  1392. me.

1393. Is it even possible for a saved

1394. sinner to live out the mind of

  1395. Christ?

1396. Paul says, I'm one witness.

  1397. I'm a saved sinner.

  1398. And it's a joy.

  1399. I rejoice at it.

1400. And as I'm being poured out to

1401. complete what God's doing in the

  1402. congregation, I hope you'll rejoice

  1403. with me.

  1404. It's not only possible, it's God's

1405. beautiful design for his church.

1406. David Strain commented, your holiness,

1407. Christian, is about the good pleasure

  1408. of God.

1409. There is a profound connection

  1410. between godliness and joyfulness.

  1411. It's so true.

1412. He begins by saying it's do all

1413. these things for God's good

  1414. pleasure.

1415. It's the good pleasure of God.

1416. And then he ends this thought by

1417. saying, I rejoice with God.

1418. Strain goes on to say, there is a

  1419. deep marriage between true

  1420. holiness and true happiness.

1421. As we work out our salvation with

1422. fear and trembling, there is a sweet

1423. note of joy at every step.

1424. There is joy in partnership with

1425. those with whom God has called us to

  1426. minister.

1427. There is joy in our life together as a

  1428. local church.

1429. There is joy in our witness together to

1430. this crooked and perverse generation.

1431. The life in Christ is marked by joy at

  1432. every step.

1433. I know that some of you are in suffering and pain and

  1434. uncertainty.

1435. And if you're like me, the Holy Spirit is helping me now

1436. like wrestle with what is the difference between

1437. praying how long, oh Lord, like we're supposed to do in the

  1438. Psalms and grumbling.

1439. So I just want to remind us of God's providence.

1440. He invites you to pray.

  1441. Take it to him.

  1442. He can handle it.

1443. And don't cause one of these little ones or another

1444. brother or sister to stumble.

1445. Confess our sins to one another and go to the Lord in

  1446. prayer.

1447. Remind one another of God's providence, of his care, of

  1448. his compassion.

1449. We don't want what we deserve.

  1450. We don't want justice.

1451. Christ poured out his justice on Christ.

1452. God poured out his justice on the cross.

  1453. Christ.

1454. I read of Gregory, ancient church leader, hundreds of years

  1455. ago.

1456. He had just a biting headache, like a migraine headache all

  1457. the time.

1458. And then he reflected years later how he had prayed for so long

1459. that God would remove this headache.

1460. And he thought in his own mind how much more I could serve God

1461. if only God would remove this.

1462. Well, one day the Lord did give him a good spell without having

  1463. this headache.

1464. For a long time it was removed.

  1465. And then he reflected.

1466. He said, when that headache was removed, I found myself, my

1467. flesh, falling into lust like I never had before.

1468. And it tormented my soul.

1469. And I asked the Lord, would you please bring back that

  1470. headache?

1471. Because that was better for me.

  1472. I don't know what's better for me.

1473. You know what's better for me, Lord.

1474. The mind of Christ in you will give you all you need to

1475. sustain that obedient, patient, joyful walk with God.

1476. That's really what this passage is about.

1477. Patiently do all things with rejoicing.

  1478. James 5, 7 through 9 says,

1479. Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord.

1480. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth,

1481. being patient about it until it receives the early and late rains.

  1482. You also be patient.

1483. Establish your hearts for the coming of the Lord is at hand.

1484. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged.

1485. Behold, the judge is standing at the door.

  1486. Let's pray.

1487. Lord, you're our good Father.

1488. You're so close to your people.

1489. Please teach us to be patient.

1490. Please give us your strength.

1491. Please establish our hearts on your second coming.

1492. We praise you, Father, that you took on flesh.

1493. You made yourself so low.

1494. And you invite us into this joy, this self-giving love for others

1495. that can only come from you.

1496. Please work that into us.

1497. Please help us as a church to do all things

1498. according to your good pleasure.

1499. And for your glory we ask.

  1500. Amen.
