  1. Luke chapter 1 verses 26 through 38. This is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, sufficient, authoritative word for you, his people.

    Luke 1:26–38

  2. Luke 1, starting at 26.

  3. Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David.

  4. The virgin's name was Mary. And having come in, the angel said to her, Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.

  5. But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying and considered what manner of greeting this was.

  6. Then the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

  7. Verse 31.

  8. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a son and he shall be called Jesus.

  9. He will be great and will be called the son of the highest and the Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.

  10. And he will reign over the house of Jacob forever and ever.

  11. And of his kingdom, there will be no end.

  12. Then Mary said to the angel, How can this be since I do not know a man?

  13. And the angel answered and said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the highest will overshadow you.

  14. Therefore, also the Holy One who is to be born will be called the son of God.

  15. Now, indeed, Elizabeth, your relative has gone and also conceived a son in her old age.

  16. And this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren.

  17. For with God, nothing will be impossible.

  18. Then Mary said, Behold, the maidservant of the Lord.

  19. Let it be to me according to your word.

  20. And the angel departed from her.

  21. This is the word of the Lord.

  22. Thanks be to God.

  23. Thanks be to God.

  24. You may be seated.

  25. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  26. Let's pray.

  27. Lord, we praise you that you have not left us in darkness,

  28. but you have shown the light of your glory into this world in the person of Jesus Christ.

  29. We praise you for the light that has overcome the darkness

  30. and for how the gospel of Jesus Christ, our Savior and our Lord,

  31. how this gospel continues to conquer and push back the darkness.

  32. Lord, no shadow can stand before your unfolding glory.

  33. We praise you, Father, that you speak still today,

  34. that your Holy Spirit makes your word active and sharp and alive.

  35. We pray that your word will shine into the darkest places, Lord,

  36. of our minds that need to be enlightened and reformed,

  37. and that you'll draw us, Father, by your love, by your conquering power,

  38. to more and more conform to this image and likeness of your Son,

  39. that he will be glorified,

  40. and the purpose of his mission will be fulfilled in us as people.

  41. We ask this for your glory, for our good, and for his precious namesake.

  42. Amen.

  43. Well, failure to prepare is fatal.

  44. History teaches us this.

  45. If the Romans were to set their eyes on your piece of land

  46. and you were not ready for them to come with their army and their artillery,

  47. it was game over for you.

  48. You know how the Roman Empire would expand and conquer.

  49. They would begin by surrounding your countryside.

  50. They would then destroy your farms,

  51. cut off your supply of food,

  52. so that you become starved and weakened on the inside of the walls.

  53. After a while, if you were to try to negotiate with the Romans,

  54. they would give you a settlement that is so unfavorable,

  55. they would drive you into poverty by heavy taxes.

  56. If you were to fight when you're already weakened without food,

  57. you would easily get slaughtered,

  58. and any survivors would then become their slaves.

  59. Failure to prepare for a conquering kingdom is fatal.

  60. This is the time of Advent.

  61. Advent.

  62. And I want to encourage you that Advent is a time of Christ's kingdom coming

  63. and for us to prepare for it.

  64. Where does that word Advent come from?

  65. Well, after Julius Caesar in about the year 100 before Christ,

  66. he won a battle in Asia Minor,

  67. so just north of Philippi, where we've been going in our series.

  68. He later returned home,

  69. and famously, or at least supposedly, according to historians,

  70. he declared those famous three words in Latin,

  71. veni, vidi, vici.

  72. It's a phrase that means I came, I saw, and I conquered.

  73. What does that have to do with the word advent?

  74. Well, that verb, venire, or ven,

  75. it means to move towards, to draw nigh, to approach,

  76. to arrive at, to be present, or to advance upon.

  77. It means I came to that land that I saw, and I conquered it.

  78. It's the coming of a conquering king.

  79. Since God finished the revelation of the Old Testament,

  80. there have been 400 years without a prophet being risen up,

  81. and the spirit poured out so they could give new revelation.

  82. 400 years without an angel showing up from heaven,

  83. and speaking on behalf of God to God's people.

  84. And there's been a remnant waiting for those 400 years

  85. for the coming of the king,

  86. the coming of Messiah, the anointed one.

  87. They're waiting for him to come.

  88. Those 400 years were 400 years of advent,

  89. making themselves ready,

  90. preparing themselves because the king is coming to their land.

  91. An example of this remnant that was waiting

  92. for the coming of the anointed one,

  93. you can actually turn a page forward in your Bible.

  94. It's Luke chapter 2, verse 25.

    Luke 2:25

  95. We read of Simeon.

  96. He's described as being just and devout.

  97. He's a man whose faith is serious.

  98. He's wanting to be in the presence of God,

  99. to stand forgiven and righteous before the Lord,

  100. devout to search the scriptures.

  101. And it says that Simeon, Luke 2, 25, was waiting.

  102. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,

  103. and the Holy Spirit was upon him.

  104. And he's one of many who will prophesy,

  105. and who will burst forward into song.

  106. So, beloved congregation,

  107. Advent is not bells and smells.

  108. Advent is a time to get your soul ready

  109. for the second coming of Christ.

  110. My question for us today is,

  111. are you ready for the coming of the Lord?

  112. Are you ready for the coming of the Lord?

  113. I want to see in Luke 1,

  114. four ways to be ready

  115. for the king that's coming

  116. and advancing his kingdom.

  117. The first one is this,

  118. in verse 26,

  119. to be ready for the coming of the Lord.

  120. Realize that heaven invades earth

  121. when you least expect it.

  122. Heaven invades earth when you least expect it.

  123. In verse 26, we read,

  124. now in the sixth month,

  125. what is this point of reference?

  126. You can go back two verses.

  127. So look at Luke 1, verse 24.

    Luke 1:24

  128. We're told Elizabeth had conceived,

  129. even though she was in her old age.

  130. It was God miraculously allowing

  131. someone much beyond the age

  132. of giving birth to a child

  133. to become pregnant.

  134. And then we're told in verse 24

  135. that she hid herself five months.

  136. So this clarifies,

  137. it's now the sixth month

  138. of Elizabeth's pregnancy.

  139. The angel Gabriel

  140. was sent by God

  141. to a city of Galilee named Nazareth.

  142. See, heaven,

  143. it will invade earth

  144. when you least expect it.

  145. Picture this trip.

  146. Gabriel, an angel of the Lord,

  147. God most high.

  148. His trip goes from glory

  149. to utter simplicity.

  150. It goes from highest heaven

  151. to Nazareth.

  152. Look in Luke chapter 1, verse 19.

    Luke 1:19

  153. Gabriel had made another appearance

  154. and he described himself this way

  155. in Luke 1, 19.

  156. I am Gabriel

  157. who stands

  158. in the presence

  159. of God.

  160. This is where Gabriel stands.

  161. This is where he goes to work.

  162. It's in the presence

  163. of God.

  164. What does the Bible say

  165. about the presence of God?

  166. In Hebrews 12, 22,

  167. we're told the presence of God.

  168. It's a heavenly Mount Zion,

  169. the city of the living God

  170. surrounded by an innumerable

  171. company of angels.

  172. So there stands Gabriel

  173. before God the creator

  174. with an innumerable company

  175. of angels in heaven.

  176. Revelation 4 and 5

  177. described heaven

  178. as a place of worship

  179. where the voice of angels

  180. is crying out

  181. the glory and the praise of God

  182. along with all the souls

  183. that God has redeemed

  184. throughout the Old

  185. and the New Testament

  186. by the great host

  187. that surround the throne of God.

  188. And we're told in Luke 15, 10

  189. that heaven,

  190. the presence of God

  191. is a place of joy

  192. that the angels of God,

  193. they burst forth in joy,

  194. rejoicing over one sinner,

  195. who repents.

  196. That's where Gabriel

  197. gets to work

  198. day and night

  199. before the throne of God.

  200. And from the holy throne

  201. of God in heaven,

  202. he sends Gabriel

  203. to Nazareth.

  204. Simple,

  205. middle of nowhere,

  206. quiet town of Nazareth.

  207. When God gave to the Israelites

  208. the land of Israel,

  209. the promised land,

  210. you remember how

  211. the 12 tribes,

  212. the two half tribes

  213. are made into 13,

  214. but they each were given

  215. a portion of land

  216. in Israel.

  217. Well,

  218. this place of Nazareth

  219. was given to the half tribe

  220. called Nap,

  221. I'm sorry,

  222. to the tribe of Naphtali.

  223. It was the son

  224. of Rachel's

  225. maidservant.

  226. maidservant.

  227. So not the beloved Rachel,

  228. but the place

  229. where Rachel's bond slave,

  230. her son,

  231. was given.

  232. This land of Nazareth

  233. had turned

  234. to worship the idols.

  235. They had been conquered

  236. by the Assyrians

  237. much before

  238. the two southern tribes

  239. fell to idolatry.

  240. The people that lived

  241. in the land of Nazareth

  242. had been scattered,

  243. carried away.

  244. There had been a remnant

  245. that had been left back,

  246. but then

  247. when the Lord brought them

  248. back out of captivity

  249. and they began

  250. to live in the land,

  251. the Assyrians

  252. had purposely

  253. intermingled them

  254. and mixed them.

  255. So these northern tribes

  256. were looked down upon

  257. by the two southern tribes

  258. as being impure,

  259. unkosher.

  260. Even the other Galileans

  261. who lived in this

  262. northern region

  263. would mock Nazareth

  264. as an out-of-the-way place.

  265. It's not something

  266. you would expect

  267. anything great

  268. to come from.

  269. You remember

  270. the words of Nathaniel

  271. in John 1.46.

  272. He said,

  273. can anything good

  274. come out of Nazareth?

  275. Well, we read that

  276. in verse 26.

  277. This is exactly the town

  278. that the Lord

  279. sent Gabriel to.

  280. And in verse 27,

  281. we read,

  282. it was to speak

  283. to a virgin

  284. who was betrothed

  285. to a man

  286. whose name was Joseph

  287. of the house of David.

  288. A person would be betrothed.

  289. Their parents

  290. would talk to other parents

  291. and they would agree

  292. that this daughter

  293. around the age 13

  294. would be given

  295. in marriage

  296. to this boy

  297. or this young man.

  298. You would be betrothed

  299. for one year.

  300. It was legally binding.

  301. And during this one year,

  302. it was a period

  303. of testing

  304. to make sure

  305. that the two

  306. could remain pure

  307. for one another.

  308. It was a period

  309. of chastity.

  310. If this betrothed girl

  311. were to

  312. become impure,

  313. then the young man

  314. who was betrothed

  315. to her

  316. during this one year period,

  317. he had two options.

  318. He could apply

  319. justice to her

  320. according to Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 22:21

  321. chapter 22

  322. verse 21,

  323. and he would stone her

  324. as an adulteress

  325. for being unfaithful.

  326. Or he could choose

  327. to show her mercy

  328. by divorcing her quietly.

  329. Mary's relatives

  330. were told

  331. she traveled down

  332. to visit Elizabeth,

  333. so that was

  334. her side of the family

  335. that lived in the hill

  336. country around Jerusalem.

  337. And Elizabeth's husband

  338. had been chosen

  339. to be the high priest

  340. that year.

  341. We also know that

  342. Joseph had to travel

  343. down to Bethlehem

  344. to trace his family

  345. heritage down south.

  346. Bethlehem is very close

  347. to Jerusalem

  348. as well.

  349. But how did this

  350. young couple end up

  351. not close to Jerusalem,

  352. the pure tribes,

  353. but way up in Nazareth,

  354. out of the middle

  355. of nowhere?

  356. We don't know

  357. the details of their story.

  358. It's likely that

  359. either their parents

  360. or grandparents

  361. for work and survival

  362. had to migrate

  363. within the country.

  364. We do know that

  365. Joseph and Mary

  366. were working class

  367. and very poor

  368. because when they came

  369. to bring a sacrifice,

  370. they didn't bring a lamb.

  371. They had to bring

  372. a poor man's offering,

  373. which was pigeons.

  374. And we knew that

  375. Joseph was a carpenter's

  376. apprentice,

  377. getting started,

  378. learning a trade.

  379. And this is where

  380. the angel Gabriel

  381. shows up.

  382. We don't get a lot

  383. of details about

  384. the life of Mary

  385. and Joseph or Jesus

  386. in those formative years,

  387. but we do read

  388. in Luke 4,

  389. chapter,

  390. I'm sorry,

  391. chapter 4,

  392. verse 16,

  393. that it was in Nazareth

  394. where Jesus had been

  395. brought up,

  396. that Jesus went

  397. to the synagogue.

  398. Synagogue would be

  399. not a temple,

  400. but a place

  401. where God's people

  402. could go to read

  403. the scriptures

  404. for themselves.

  405. And Jesus went there

  406. on a Sabbath,

  407. as was his custom,

  408. and he stood up

  409. and read.

  410. So growing up

  411. with these poor,

  412. simple parents,

  413. going to the synagogue,

  414. hearing the word

  415. of God read,

  416. this is the simple

  417. upbringing of the

  418. Son of God.

  419. Small town,

  420. small church,

  421. you work,

  422. you study,

  423. you do it again

  424. the next week.

  425. heaven will break

  426. into earth

  427. when we least

  428. expect it.

  429. It might feel

  430. the same for you

  431. today.

  432. Your life is simple,

  433. it's routine,

  434. feels very mundane,

  435. and here we have

  436. a small group

  437. of people awaiting

  438. the coming of the

  439. Messiah,

  440. the King,

  441. the promised one,

  442. and they're living,

  443. devout,

  444. reading his word,

  445. studying his word,

  446. coming to hear

  447. from the Lord

  448. week after week.

  449. Will we be ready

  450. for the next

  451. coming of the King?

  452. 1 Thessalonians 4,

  453. 16 and 17

  454. says that the Lord

  455. himself,

  456. again,

  457. will descend

  458. from heaven,

  459. not Gabriel this time,

  460. it will be Jesus

  461. Christ himself.

  462. He will come

  463. to earth again,

  464. and it will be

  465. with a great shout,

  466. with the voice

  467. of an archangel,

  468. with the trumpet

  469. of God,

  470. and the dead

  471. in Christ

  472. will rise first.

  473. Then we who are

  474. still alive,

  475. we will be caught

  476. up together

  477. with them in the clouds,

  478. and we will meet

  479. the Lord in the air.

  480. Heaven will burst

  481. onto this earth

  482. when we least expect

  483. it once again.

  484. So let's be ready

  485. for the next coming

  486. of the Lord.

  487. The second way

  488. we do this

  489. is to realize

  490. that our salvation

  491. depends entirely

  492. on God's grace

  493. for you in Christ.

  494. Realize that

  495. your salvation

  496. depends

  497. entirely

  498. on God's grace

  499. for you

  500. in Christ.

  501. I want to point

  502. this out with

  503. Mary

  504. and her response

  505. to the angel.

  506. Look at verse 27

  507. at how Mary

  508. is described.

  509. We're told by

  510. this same author

  511. under the inspiration

  512. of the Holy Scripture

  513. that Simeon

  514. was devout

  515. and just.

  516. And that's how

  517. Elizabeth and Zacharias

  518. were described.

  519. But to Mary

  520. there's no description

  521. given.

  522. Look at verse 27.

  523. It simply says

  524. the virgin's name

  525. was Mary.

  526. Not pointing out

  527. any other blessings

  528. or attributes

  529. or meritorious traits

  530. of this young one.

  531. Verse 28 says,

  532. Having come in,

  533. the angel said

  534. to Mary,

  535. Rejoice,

  536. highly favored one.

  537. The Lord is with you.

  538. Blessed are you

  539. among women.

  540. Do you see

  541. the simplicity

  542. of it?

  543. such a quiet town

  544. you can almost hear

  545. the door crack

  546. open,

  547. screech,

  548. and then here comes

  549. Mary entering the house

  550. and before her

  551. is an angel

  552. who moments ago

  553. was in the presence

  554. of God most high.

  555. But this greeting

  556. is very calm.

  557. There's no ceremony

  558. to it.

  559. It just simply says,

  560. Rejoice,

  561. favored one.

  562. The Lord is with you.

  563. Blessed are you

  564. among women.

  565. And Mary's response

  566. in verse 29

  567. says that when she saw him,

  568. the angel Gabriel,

  569. Mary was troubled

  570. at his saying

  571. and considered

  572. what manner

  573. of greeting this was.

  574. We have to understand

  575. their custom

  576. to realize

  577. what that sentence means.

  578. A great example

  579. that was helpful to me

  580. is,

  581. do you remember

  582. in the Old Testament

  583. when one of the patriarchs

  584. was going to meet another

  585. or when we had

  586. Jacob going back

  587. to meet Esau

  588. and there's,

  589. send the caravans

  590. out in front

  591. with all the gifts

  592. and let me come

  593. and make myself

  594. low before him

  595. and show like,

  596. I'm submissive to you.

  597. You're the Lord

  598. in this relationship.

  599. I'm humbling myself

  600. as I greet you.

  601. So how a greeting

  602. happened in the custom

  603. of the ancient Hebrew people,

  604. it was establishing

  605. right off the bat,

  606. how are we going

  607. to interact

  608. with one another?

  609. And it would be presumptuous

  610. for a 13-year-old girl

  611. who has nothing

  612. to be described by

  613. except that she was young

  614. and virgin

  615. to expect

  616. to be on the same level

  617. as the angel Gabriel

  618. from the presence

  619. of the Lord

  620. who strikes fear

  621. in anyone.

  622. So she's surprised

  623. at what manner

  624. of greeting is this?

  625. The angel

  626. from God's presence

  627. is greeting me

  628. and saying,

  629. you are highly favored.

  630. The Lord

  631. is blessing you

  632. above all other women.

  633. This doesn't make

  634. any sense.

  635. She's the one

  636. who should be

  637. making herself low

  638. and giving

  639. these exalted

  640. greetings and praise

  641. to this glorious figure

  642. from heaven.

  643. In verse 30,

  644. the angel said to her,

  645. Do not be afraid, Mary.

  646. You have found favor

  647. with God.

  648. You have found favor

  649. with God.

  650. That phrase,

  651. to find favor

  652. with God,

  653. has been used

  654. by the Roman Catholic Church

  655. to create an entire

  656. idolatrous body

  657. of teaching.

  658. The Roman Catholic

  659. Council of Trent

  660. wrongly interpreted

  661. that phrase,

  662. to have found favor

  663. with God,

  664. as to be full

  665. of grace.

  666. And it's then taught

  667. that Mary is all holy.

  668. If you're full

  669. of God's grace,

  670. there's no room

  671. for sin,

  672. therefore you are

  673. fully all holy.

  674. Pope Pius IX

  675. in 1854

  676. taught that Mary

  677. was redeemed

  678. from the moment

  679. of her conception.

  680. It just keeps adding

  681. on these requirements

  682. then for Mary

  683. to give birth

  684. to the Holy Son of God.

  685. How could her sin

  686. have not polluted him?

  687. And therefore,

  688. she must have never

  689. had sin in her whole life.

  690. She would have also

  691. been sinless.

  692. All of this is based

  693. on that exact little phrase,

  694. you have found favor

  695. with God.

  696. The verb is

  697. to have found.

  698. So that's a good translation.

  699. You have found favor

  700. with God.

  701. The word favor

  702. in the Greek

  703. is karim.

  704. Karim.

  705. And that literally

  706. means grace.

  707. 152 times or so

  708. that word is used

  709. in the New Testament.

  710. 130 of those times

  711. it's translated

  712. as grace.

  713. It's a mere handful

  714. of times

  715. where it's translated

  716. as anything other

  717. than grace.

  718. Here's an example

  719. in Acts 15, 11.

  720. It's through the grace

  721. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  722. through the karim

  723. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  724. that we shall be saved.

  725. You hear the word of God

  726. of the gospel

  727. and you believe.

  728. God who knows the heart,

  729. he acknowledges you

  730. by giving you

  731. the Holy Spirit

  732. and purifying your heart

  733. by faith.

  734. So that's the same translation

  735. of the word karim,

  736. grace.

  737. This phrase,

  738. to have found favor

  739. in the eyes of God,

  740. this also brings to mind

  741. a couple passages

  742. in the Old Testament

  743. where that same description

  744. is given.

  745. In Genesis 6, 8,

  746. we're told that Noah

  747. found grace

  748. in the eyes

  749. of the Lord.

  750. Now the Hebrew word

  751. is chin,

  752. Noah found chin,

  753. and so how is that

  754. word translated?

  755. Well in Exodus 13, 17,

  756. God said of Moses,

  757. you, Moses,

  758. have found chin,

  759. or you have found grace

  760. in my sight

  761. and I know your name.

  762. The sins of Noah,

  763. the sins of Moses

  764. are very clear

  765. in the Old Testament.

  766. The point is that

  767. God looked upon

  768. all those who deserve

  769. punishment and wrath

  770. for their sin

  771. and instead of giving them

  772. what they deserve,

  773. they are ill-deserving.

  774. Instead,

  775. he gives them favor

  776. and blessing

  777. and it's the same word

  778. to describe to Mary

  779. finding grace

  780. in the sight of God.

  781. We read in verse 38,

  782. Luke 1, 38,

  783. then Mary said,

  784. behold,

  785. the maid servant

  786. or the bond slave

  787. of the Lord.

  788. Let it be to me

  789. according to your word.

  790. And then the angel

  791. departed.

  792. See,

  793. even Mary's faith

  794. is nothing extraordinary.

  795. Mary's faith

  796. is simply the faith

  797. of a child.

  798. She is trusting

  799. this word

  800. that the Lord

  801. has given her,

  802. surrendering to the Lord

  803. himself,

  804. trusting in his word.

  805. And that's how she is ready

  806. for the coming of the Lord.

  807. She receives this

  808. by faith,

  809. trusting in the grace

  810. of God to her.

  811. Alone.

  812. For you to be ready

  813. for the coming of the Lord,

  814. that's the response

  815. that God calls of you

  816. as well.

  817. When Christ returns,

  818. don't remain unrepentant,

  819. proud.

  820. See,

  821. the demons

  822. know that God

  823. is coming again.

  824. In Mark 1, 24,

  825. they say to Christ

  826. that his first coming,

  827. what have you to do

  828. with us,

  829. Jesus of Nazareth?

  830. Have you come

  831. to destroy us?

  832. We know who you are,

  833. the Holy One

  834. of God.

  835. So the faith

  836. of the demon says,

  837. yes,

  838. he is coming

  839. and he will destroy

  840. all those

  841. who do not bow

  842. their knee to him.

  843. They fear

  844. the first coming

  845. of the Lord.

  846. And Paul words

  847. very sternly

  848. in 1 Corinthians 16,

  849. 22,

  850. if anyone

  851. does not love

  852. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  853. let him be

  854. accursed.

  855. And then he says,

  856. oh come,

  857. Lord Jesus.

  858. Maranatha.

  859. See,

  860. that should be

  861. our prayer

  862. in the face

  863. of injustice.

  864. Someone who

  865. denies Jesus Christ,

  866. does not believe

  867. God at his word,

  868. stands proud

  869. and unrepentant

  870. before the Lord.

  871. Our prayer should

  872. simply be to turn

  873. to God and say,

  874. come quickly,

  875. Lord Jesus.

  876. My temptation

  877. is to take matters

  878. into my own hands,

  879. but I need to remember

  880. I'm a sinner

  881. just like that.

  882. I would be just

  883. as blind

  884. if God hadn't

  885. shown me his grace

  886. and shown me his favor

  887. when I'm ill-deserving.

  888. Because my salvation

  889. depends entirely

  890. on God's grace

  891. for me in Christ.

  892. And then it changes.

  893. I can pray,

  894. come quickly,

  895. Lord Jesus.

  896. Not because

  897. I live in fear

  898. like these demons,

  899. but because I trust

  900. I am fully pardoned,

  901. fully forgiven,

  902. fully united to God

  903. by the person

  904. and work of Jesus.

  905. I stand

  906. in his grace alone.

  907. Well,

  908. the third way

  909. to be ready

  910. for the next coming

  911. of the Lord

  912. is to trust

  913. that he is

  914. who he says

  915. he is.

  916. To be ready

  917. for the coming

  918. of the Lord,

  919. trust that the Lord

  920. is who he says

  921. he is.

  922. Look at verse 31.

  923. We read,

  924. Behold,

  925. the angel tells Mary,

  926. you will conceive

  927. in your womb

  928. and bring forth

  929. a son

  930. and shall call

  931. his name

  932. Jesus.

  933. and he will be great

  934. and will be called

  935. the son

  936. of the highest.

  937. The Lord God

  938. will give him

  939. the throne

  940. of his father David

  941. and he will reign

  942. over the house

  943. of Jacob forever

  944. and his kingdom

  945. there will be no end.

  946. Mary,

  947. do you trust

  948. that Jesus

  949. is who he says

  950. he is?

  951. Both Mary

  952. and Joseph

  953. were told

  954. by the angel

  955. to give

  956. this baby

  957. the name

  958. Jesus.

  959. And we know

  960. that Mary

  961. goes to visit

  962. Elizabeth

  963. but then the next

  964. thing that happens

  965. is that Mary

  966. and Joseph

  967. travel together

  968. and they would

  969. have so much

  970. to process together

  971. that God

  972. has revealed

  973. to them

  974. and making sense

  975. of what God

  976. has told them

  977. by the mouth

  978. of his own angels

  979. his servants

  980. and messengers

  981. that came from

  982. the presence

  983. of God

  984. most high.

  985. so they can

  986. refer now

  987. to this little

  988. baby in the tummy

  989. as Jesus

  990. like parents

  991. love to do

  992. and as they're

  993. talking together

  994. husband and wife

  995. as they travel

  996. to Bethlehem

  997. Jesus

  998. his name

  999. will be

  1000. Yeshua

  1001. Yeshua

  1002. means to save

  1003. in Exodus

  1004. 14

  1005. 13

  1006. Moses

  1007. is given

  1008. this word

  1009. stand firm

  1010. and see

  1011. the salvation

  1012. of the Lord

  1013. which he

  1014. will work

  1015. for you

  1016. today

  1017. to read

  1018. that with

  1019. the Hebrew

  1020. word inserted

  1021. it's this

  1022. stand firm

  1023. and see

  1024. the Yeshua

  1025. of the Lord

  1026. which he

  1027. will work

  1028. for you

  1029. today

  1030. Yeshua

  1031. means

  1032. salvation

  1033. and you

  1034. can picture

  1035. Mary's thoughts

  1036. well Isaiah

  1037. 43 11

  1038. God says

  1039. behold I

  1040. am

  1041. the Lord

  1042. and there

  1043. is no

  1044. other

  1045. savior

  1046. besides

  1047. me

  1048. God

  1049. says

  1050. I

  1051. am

  1052. the

  1053. Lord

  1054. there

  1055. is

  1056. no

  1057. other

  1058. savior

  1059. besides

  1060. me

  1061. and

  1062. Isaiah

  1063. 45 22

  1064. says

  1065. turn to

  1066. me

  1067. and be

  1068. saved

  1069. all the

  1070. ends

  1071. of the

  1072. earth

  1073. for I

  1074. am

  1075. God

  1076. and there

  1077. is

  1078. no

  1079. other

  1080. see

  1081. the

  1082. teaching

  1083. of the

  1084. Old

  1085. Testament

  1086. is

  1087. very

  1088. clear

  1089. there

  1090. is

  1091. one

  1092. being

  1093. capable

  1094. of

  1095. saving

  1096. sinners

  1097. and who

  1098. is it

  1099. it's

  1100. God

  1101. himself

  1102. there

  1103. is

  1104. no

  1105. one

  1106. else

  1107. who

  1108. can

  1109. save

  1110. there

  1111. is

  1112. no

  1113. other

  1114. savior

  1115. besides

  1116. God

  1117. I

  1118. am

  1119. the

  1120. Lord

  1121. himself

  1122. and

  1123. Joseph

  1124. recalls

  1125. Matthew

  1126. 121

  1127. in fact

  1128. turn there

  1129. so you can

  1130. see it

  1131. with your

  1132. own

  1133. eyes

  1134. Matthew

  1135. 121

  1136. the

  1146. Joseph

  1147. son

  1148. of

  1149. David

  1150. do

  1151. not

  1152. be

  1153. afraid

  1154. to

  1155. take

  1156. to

  1157. you

  1158. Mary

  1159. your

  1160. wife

  1161. for

  1162. that

  1163. which

  1164. is

  1165. conceived

  1166. in

  1167. her

  1168. is

  1169. of

  1170. the

  1171. Holy

  1172. Spirit

  1173. and

  1175. will

  1176. bring

  1177. forth

  1178. a

  1179. son

  1180. and

  1181. you

  1182. will

  1183. call

  1184. his

  1185. name

  1186. Yeshua

  1187. salvation

  1188. for

  1189. he

  1190. will

  1191. save

  1192. his

  1193. people

  1194. from

  1195. their

  1196. sins

  1197. how

  1198. much

  1199. of

  1200. this

  1201. could

  1202. Mary

  1203. and

  1204. Joseph

  1205. have

  1206. put

  1207. together

  1208. with

  1209. what

  1210. God

  1211. revealed

  1212. to

  1213. them

  1214. we

  1215. can

  1216. use

  1217. a

  1218. logical

  1219. syllogism

  1220. to

  1221. arrive

  1222. at a

  1223. conclusion

  1224. that

  1225. sound

  1226. here's

  1227. the

  1228. first

  1229. premise

  1230. according

  1231. to

  1232. Isaiah

  1233. 43

  1234. there

  1235. is

  1236. no

  1237. savior

  1238. besides

  1239. God

  1240. here's

  1241. the

  1242. second

  1243. premise

  1244. we

  1245. got

  1246. to

  1247. reconcile

  1248. according

  1249. to

  1250. Matthew

  1251. 21

  1252. Jesus

  1253. will

  1254. save

  1255. his

  1256. people

  1257. from

  1258. their

  1259. sins

  1260. do

  1261. you

  1262. get

  1263. this

  1264. there's

  1265. no

  1266. savior

  1267. besides

  1268. God

  1269. Jesus

  1270. will

  1271. save

  1272. his

  1273. people

  1274. from

  1275. their

  1276. sin

  1277. the

  1278. only

  1279. conclusion

  1280. you

  1281. can

  1282. draw

  1283. is

  1284. that

  1285. Jesus

  1286. in

  1287. your

  1288. womb

  1289. is

  1290. God

  1291. look

  1294. response

  1295. go back

  1296. to

  1297. Luke

  1298. chapter

  1299. one

  1300. we're

  1301. told

  1302. that

  1303. Mary

  1304. was

  1305. reflective

  1306. you

  1307. know

  1308. she

  1309. pondered

  1310. these

  1311. things

  1312. in

  1313. her

  1314. heart

  1315. we're

  1316. told

  1317. two

  1318. times

  1319. there's

  1320. so

  1321. much

  1322. to

  1323. ponder

  1324. here

  1325. and

  1326. as

  1327. she

  1328. ponders

  1329. and

  1330. meditates

  1331. at

  1332. some

  1333. point

  2047. to

  2048. Mary

  2049. look

  2050. at

  2051. verse

  2052. 34

2053. Mary said to the angel, how can this be since I do not know a man?

2054. This is the biblical sense of knowing.

  2055. She's saying, I am a virgin.

  2056. Verse 35.

2057. And the angel answered and said to her, the Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the highest will overshadow you.

2058. Therefore, also that the Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.

2059. Well, in the Apostles Creed, we confess these two things.

2060. That Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit and Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary.

2061. Mary herself, an eyewitness telling Luke, the historian, her eyewitness account.

2062. She affirms this in verse 34.

  2063. I am a virgin.

  2064. I have never known a man.

2065. And we're told that Jesus was, in verse 35, conceived this way.

2066. The Holy Spirit will come upon Mary and the power of the highest will overshadow you.

2067. God's creative power as an overshadowing act.

2068. There's no need for contact.

2069. God will truly generate a male child in the womb of this young lady, Mary, by the creator himself.

2070. His own power through which he brought the world into being.

2071. The Holy Spirit will give to the God-man, Jesus Christ, the divine nature.

2072. Mary, from her egg, will give to Jesus Christ, the human nature.

2073. God himself would miraculously cause the Y chromosome of a male to be in the female egg.

2074. This is genetically, biologically impossible.

2075. Scientists would have no way of replicating this, even on the quote-unquote lowest forms of life.

2076. This will be a male created in the womb of a female without the help of another human male.

2077. This is an act of God.

2078. In verse 34, he's described as the Holy One.

2079. See, our Lord Jesus Christ knew no sin.

  2080. 2 Corinthians 5.21

2081. Our Lord Jesus Christ did no sin.

  2082. 1 Peter 2.22

2083. Our Lord Jesus Christ had no sin.

  2084. 1 John 3.5

2085. We're told that the body of our Lord Jesus Christ was prepared for him inside Mary's womb by the Holy Spirit of God.

  2086. Hebrews 10.5

2087. So how did this sinless Holy One enter and develop and grow inside the womb of Mary?

2088. Verse 35 gives us this word, overshadowed.

2089. That the Holy Spirit would overshadow Mary.

2090. Gabriel uses the same word with this promise to Mary that the Old Testament had used to describe the presence of God in the Holy of Holies.

  2091. In the Jewish tabernacle.

  2092. In Exodus chapter 40, verse 35.

    Exodus 40:35

2093. The New Testament is given to us in Greek.

2094. The Old Testament in Hebrew.

2095. But there was also a Hebrew, I'm sorry, a Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament called the Septuagint.

2096. So when the New Testament uses a Greek word, you can see where that Greek word was used in this Greek translation of the Old Testament.

2097. And we're told in Exodus 40.35 that Moses was unable to enter the tent of meeting.

  2098. Why?

2099. Because the glory of the Lord had overshadowed and filled it.

2100. The cloud had settled and rested over it.

2101. And the glory of the Lord so filled the tent of meeting that Moses couldn't get in.

2102. That's the overshadowing glory of God.

2103. The same thing happened at the dedication of the temple.

2104. Where the priests couldn't come in physically.

2105. They were blocked because of the weight of God's glory.

2106. It so filled the temple.

2107. That's overshadowing glory of the Holy Spirit.

  2108. It's the spiritual splendor.

2109. All of God's attributes manifested in the space and time of earth.

  2110. So that there's a physical block.

2111. I can't even approach the Holy of Holies.

2112. Because God's presence has overshadowed it.

2113. And that's the promise given to Mary.

2114. God will do what he says he will do.

2115. The glory of God will overshadow you, young Mary.

2116. God will do what he says he will do.

  2117. Isaiah 7.14 says,

2118. The Lord himself will give you a sign.

2119. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel.

2120. Well, there's that suffix again, L, which means God.

  2121. God with us.

  2122. God with us.

2123. Mary's womb became a holy of holies for the holy son of the holy God.

  2124. God with us.

2125. Conceived by the Holy Spirit.

2126. Born of the Virgin Mary.

2127. Now look at Luke 1.37.

2128. Do you believe that God will do what he says he will do?

2129. I love how Gabriel's message from the presence of God himself.

  2130. It ends with encouragement.

  2131. Luke 1.37.

2132. For with God, nothing will be impossible.

2133. I think the best translation is by the American Standard Version of this phrase.

2134. No word of God shall be void of power.

2135. No word of God shall be void of power.

2136. God will do what he says he will do.

2137. God accomplishes his purposes through the power of his word.

  2138. God bless you.

  2139. God bless you.

  2140. Psalm 33.6 and 9.

2141. By the word of the Lord, the heavens were made.

2142. And by the breath of his mouth, all their host.

2143. For he spoke and it came to be.

2144. He commanded and it stood firm.

2145. No word of God shall be void of power.

2146. Brothers and sisters, trust that the Lord will do what he promises.

  2147. Make sure you're ready.

2148. Let's be among the remnant that are waiting for the coming of the king.

2149. God did what he said he would do.

2150. Our Lord Jesus Christ came to this earth just the way God promised he would.

2151. And our Lord Jesus Christ is coming again.

  2152. His kingdom is advancing.

2153. And his kingdom will be established.

2154. The final promise is not simply that he would come to earth and die for our sins.

2155. But that he would be risen.

2156. And that he is coming again.

2157. And of his throne and dominion there will be no end.

2158. That's the end of the story.

2159. We long for the Messiah.

  2160. Come quickly, Lord Jesus.

  2161. We search the scriptures.

  2162. We pray together.

  2163. We encourage one another.

2164. Heaven will again invade earth when the world least expects it.

  2165. Let's be ready.

2166. Would you pray with me?

2167. Father, we thank you for your promises.

2168. Father, we thank you for your revelation of yourself through Jesus Christ.

2169. The full radiance of your glory.

2170. Please prepare our hearts so that we will be ready for when you come again.

  2171. Amen.

  2172. Amen.

  2173. Amen.

  2174. Amen.

  2175. Amen.

  2176. Amen.

  2177. Amen.

  2178. Amen.

  2179. Amen.

  2180. Amen.

  2181. Amen.

  2182. Amen.

  2183. Amen.

  2184. Amen.

  2185. Amen.

  2186. Amen.

  2187. Amen.

  2188. Amen.

  2189. Amen.

  2190. Amen.

  2191. Amen.

  2192. Amen.

2193. Well, we get to celebrate the Lord's Supper in the most fitting way,

2194. because we celebrate his work and his first coming,

2195. and we look forward to the promises that he will still fulfill in his second coming.

2196. We celebrate the Lord's Supper every week together.

2197. This is for believers, for those of you who know that this is the blood of your Savior,

2198. shed for the forgiveness of your sins.

2199. It's the only way you could be right with God.

2200. We're told to partake in a worthy manner to make sure that we are in the faith,

2201. receiving Christ by grace alone.

2202. We're to keep the feast with sincere hearts, grounded in God's promises,

2203. not with malice or wickedness in our lives.

2204. If you trust in the worth of Christ's blood to forgive you fully,

2205. and you know that the Spirit of Jesus dwells in you,

2206. then come to his table, visitors, to feed your faith upon him.

2207. He is set before you today again, Christ clothed in his gospel.

2208. I want to give you two encouragements as you meditate

2209. and celebrate the glorious work of Jesus for you.

2210. Think of those comforting words from Gabriel to Mary.

2211. These are God's words for other sinners like you and me,

2212. as they were for Mary.

2213. You can approach the holy, holy, holy God now through Christ.

2214. You don't need to be afraid.

2215. In Christ, you have found favor with God.

2216. Jesus Christ is great here with his people.

2217. He is exalted, magnified, declared to be great, son of the highest.

2218. So by coming forward, you're proclaiming that this is who Jesus is,

2219. that he is the Lord God himself,

2220. who will have the throne of his father, David.

2221. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever,

2222. and of his kingdom there will be no end.

2223. This is what you're proclaiming with God's people

2224. as we prepare for his return.

2225. And if the spirit of the Lord is making your heart tender again today,

  2226. praise him.

2227. You might be asking like Mary,

2228. how can this be for a person like me?

2229. And so hold on to the promise that the Holy Spirit is the one

2230. who moves to give new life.

2231. He overshadows his people still.

2232. He moves with the power of the highest.

2233. And Jesus Christ, the Holy One,

2234. is the Son of God through whom all of this is made possible.

2235. For with God, nothing will be impossible.

2236. So by coming to the Lord's Supper,

2237. you're declaring like Mary as well,

2238. I receive this by faith.

2239. Behold the bond slave of the Lord,

2240. and let it be in my life according to your word.

2241. Respond that same way today.

  2242. Amen.

2243. You know, and as we see around the Christmas decorations,

2244. there's one that I think is a great reminder,

  2245. and it's the wreath.

2246. The wreath has the spikely leaves of the evergreen,

2247. reminding us of the crown of thorns,

2248. and then the red berries on it,

2249. which remind us of the drops of Christ's blood.

2250. But when you see that,

2251. remember that's of his first coming.

2252. And a picture of his second coming is right here,

  2253. the banquet feast,

2254. when he would drink the wine that he's been waiting to drink

2255. in celebration of all his bride being with him

2256. in his father's house forever and ever.

2257. And of his dominion, there will be no end.

2258. So keep those two images in mind

2259. with the person and work of Jesus Christ

  2260. for you again today.

  2261. You may be served.

  2262. Thank you.
