  1. As I read our sermon text, remember this is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, sufficient word for his people.

  2. Philippians 3, 1 through 11.

  3. Finally, brethren, rejoice in the Lord.

  4. For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe.

  5. Beware of dogs.

  6. Beware of evil workers.

  7. Beware of the mutilation.

  8. For we are the circumcision who worship God in the spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

  9. Though I might have confidence in the flesh if anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so.

  10. Circumcised on the eighth day of the stock of Israel, the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, concerning the law of Pharisee, concerning zeal, persecuting the church,

  11. concerning the righteousness which is in the law blameless.

  12. But what things were gain to me?

  13. These I have counted loss for Christ.

  14. Yet indeed, I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord,

  15. for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him.

  16. Not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith,

  17. that I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings being conformed to his death.

  18. If by any means I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

  19. This is the word of the Lord.

  20. Thanks be to God.

  21. Thanks be to God.

  22. You may be seated.

  23. Oh, Lord, I ask that you please fill your people with true joy that can only come from Jesus Christ again today.

  24. And may our rejoicing in the Lord together be our strength as you promise.

  25. Amen.

  26. Amen.

  27. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  28. And as Luke 137 says, no word from God shall be void of power.

  29. May it be so through the ministry of his word.

  30. Well, like it or not, we live in the United States of America.

  31. Whose declaration of independence includes the phrase, the pursuit of happiness.

  32. Maybe this American ideal has never been.

  33. So bluntly put forward as Henry Ford himself did.

  34. There is no happiness except in the realization that we have accomplished something.

  35. According to Henry Ford, the pursuit of happiness is to go after whatever your heart desires.

  36. Well, the problem is our hearts are twisted and fallen and dark.

  37. And happiness in this understanding is found in grabbing something in this realm of creation for myself.

  38. Therefore, happiness is dependent upon circumstances.

  39. And Henry Ford pointed out what I think most Americans, maybe maybe all Westerners think.

  40. That if I work hard, I can control my happiness.

  41. It becomes this vicious cycle, doesn't it?

  42. Well, if I'm not happy, maybe I just need to work harder and accomplish something that will then make me finally happy.

  43. The Bible reveals something very different about joy.

  44. Biblical joy is so much deeper and it cannot be shaken.

  45. True joy can't be manufactured, manipulated or controlled by fallen man.

  46. It's not a commodity to be bought or sold.

  47. I was curious, what would Noah Webster's old dictionary say about joy and rejoicing?

  48. 1828 defines joy this way.

  49. Joy is when your soul feels deep, contented delight because you possess and appreciate something desirable, pleasant and good.

  50. Let me put that the same words in reverse order.

  51. If you possess, truly have something that is good, pleasant and desirable and you appreciate it, then you experience in your soul an emotion of deep, contented delight.

  52. That's joy.

  53. And rejoicing is to experience that.

  54. And this is different than worldly happiness because this is an inward treasure.

  55. It's a treasure.

  56. It's a treasure that I possess in my soul that can't be taken away from me when my circumstances change.

  57. Joy is the big message of the Bible.

  58. True joy.

  59. The most clear part of Jesus' teachings as they build up in all of the Gospels.

  60. We get these insights in John chapters 14, 15, 16 and 17.

    John 14 chapter mention

  61. And he pulls his disciples close and he reveals the joy of heaven to them.

  62. And Jesus said in John 15, 11,

  63. See, it's the joy of Christ himself that he wants to fill the soul of a Christian.

  64. And that's our theme for today's sermon.

  65. Verse one, Paul says it.

  66. Brethren, rejoice in the Lord.

  67. I say this again and again to you.

  68. Rejoice.

  69. So, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ, I invite you to reflect, take stock.

  70. How precious is your joy in the Lord?

  71. How precious is your joy in the Lord?

  72. In our sermon text, I've divided it into six encouragements for us of this precious joy we have in the Lord.

  73. And the first is this, that you must be reminded to rejoice in the Lord and to protect this precious joy.

  74. You and I need to be reminded to rejoice in the Lord and also to protect it.

  75. Your joy in the Lord needs to be protected.

  76. And that's a big reason why we gather in his name week after week.

  77. It's to encourage and exhort and admonish and remind one another, rejoice in the Lord.

  78. No matter what else is hard in life, rejoice in the Lord.

  79. This is his day.

  80. Look at verse one.

  81. Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord.

  82. Experience the joy of Jesus himself.

  83. For me to write the same things to you, Paul says, is not tedious, but for you it is safe.

  84. In other words, Paul's saying, I don't mind repeating this over and over to you.

  85. You need the reminder.

  86. Plus, this joy of Christ is what I'm bearing witness to.

  87. It's real.

  88. It just bubbles up from my own soul.

  89. When I think of the church in Philippi and I think of Christ and his work in his kingdom, I want to tell you about this deep joy.

  90. And I want you to experience it.

  91. That's what rejoice means.

  92. Experience this joy.

  93. And he says, for you, it's safe.

  94. Or other translations, for you, it's a safeguard.

  95. In other words, it needs to be protected.

  96. His very next words are, beware.

  97. And he repeats it three times.

  98. Your joy will be under attack.

  99. It will be threatened.

  100. So you need to be reminded to rejoice in the Lord and to protect this precious joy.

  101. Now, let me clarify it.

  102. In verse one, when he says, finally.

  103. One thing you can appreciate about your translation is that it's doing its best to be word for word, but it's still understandable in English.

  104. Now, that word finally might be a bit wooden of a translation, though it's accurate.

  105. But that same word in the original is used just as frequently to emphasize how the writer is now setting up a transition or drawing a conclusion to the arguments this far.

  106. To refresh your memory, it's been a few weeks.

  107. He said to them, rejoice, because the gift that you sent to me through Epaphroditus was received.

  108. And his service to me was a blessing.

  109. And I took his service as a gift from all of you serving me.

  110. Rejoice as I rejoice in you.

  111. He says, rejoice, church.

  112. Soon you will have my fellow soldier back in your ranks serving alongside with you.

  113. Rejoice, he's coming back.

  114. And rejoice, because soon you'll be reading this very letter that I'm writing to you.

  115. Paul says, I know I'm repeating myself.

  116. In fact, he uses this command, rejoice, 14 times in the four chapters of this little letter.

  117. I think Paul understood what we often forget.

  118. Rejoicing is an important part of our Christian armory in the defense against the attacks of the enemy.

  119. This life will put Christians at war with sin, Satan, worldliness and wolves.

  120. And a big part of how we are equipped and strengthened in the battle is the joy of the Lord.

  121. The joy of the Lord is our strength.

  122. And your joy in the Lord is worth fighting for.

  123. So you see how in verse one, it's a command to rejoice, but don't relax.

  124. The two go together.

  125. It's a militant joy.

  126. Right now, we're the church militant.

  127. One day we'll be the church triumphant.

  128. But right now we're militant.

  129. In these past weeks, we sing that beautiful Advent hymn, Rejoice, Rejoice, Emmanuel.

  130. Remember that one?

  131. Repeats rejoice twice.

  132. The first time in a major key.

  133. Rejoice.

  134. The second time in a minor key.

  135. Rejoice.

  136. So it's joyful, but it's militant.

  137. There's war.

  138. But Emmanuel, God is with us, his church.

  139. So we must be reminded to rejoice in the Lord and to protect this precious joy.

  140. The second encouragement is this.

  141. As with anything precious.

  142. Raiders will try to rob your joy in the Lord.

  143. Your joy in the Lord is precious.

  144. It's the treasure inside of you.

  145. Well, you know, the tomb raiders that would try to break into the pyramids to steal the ancient gold, silver and jewelry.

  146. Because it's precious.

  147. Because it's precious.

  148. They're going to try to get in and take it away.

  149. So his very next words are that your precious joy needs to be protected.

  150. It will be attacked.

  151. In verse one, he says, you're rejoicing needs to be safeguarded.

  152. In verse two, he says, beware three times.

  153. And he uses three very strong words.

  154. These are threats to your joy in the Lord.

  155. Beware of dogs.

  156. Beware of evil workers.

  157. Beware of the mutilation.

  158. What did this mean?

  159. Why these words?

  160. What do they have to do with the joy of the church in Philippi?

  161. We really have to read verses three and four to see how Paul continues building his argument to refute these threats.

  162. The basis of the threat to a Christian's precious joy can be summarized this.

  163. You will lose your joy if you start to put confidence in your own flesh.

  164. That's what he says in verses three and four.

  165. Though I also might have confidence in the flesh.

  166. If anyone else thinks he might have confidence in the flesh, I mourn.

  167. So do you see all three of these words tell us something about the threat to this church in Philippi,

  168. tempting these Christians to put confidence in their own flesh or to feel insecure because their flesh isn't enough.

  169. Dogs, workers of evil, the mutilation.

  170. I love Dennis Johnson's comment that Paul paints the self-righteous Jewish legalists with the dark, unsavory hues of paganism.

  171. He turns the table on him.

  172. And these three words actually have a alliteration in the original language in the Greek.

  173. The first is dogs.

  174. The Greek word is kunas.

  175. It's where we get the word canine.

  176. Kunas.

  177. Kakaos ergatas.

  178. That's evildoers.

  179. And katatome.

  180. They all start with the letter K.

  181. The mutilation.

  182. Scholars have boiled these down into three categories.

  183. And it's almost like it's almost like Paul has just seen this pattern.

  184. God brings the gospel to a church.

  185. Gentiles and all kinds of people are believing.

  186. They're gathered together.

  187. The spirit's ministering.

  188. But then here comes Satan dressed as an angel of light, twisting them, trying to bind them now to put confidence back in the flesh again.

  189. And it's almost like he's got a shorthand for that pattern.

  190. And it's these three Greek words.

  191. He just rattles them off under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

  192. What is the meaning here?

  193. The dogs are those who rob a Christian's joy by putting confidence in pedigree.

  194. So the three Ps that we can use to help us understand are pedigree, performance, and purity.

  195. So the dogs, it's pedigree.

  196. He says these legalists are the true dogs.

  197. And this is a reference to Gentiles who would be considered dirty animals and scavengers in the land.

  198. This would be a disgusting animal that lives in the alleys and eats trash.

  199. Even in Matthew 15, 24, Jesus used this common phrase of outsiders to the covenant people of God as Gentile dogs.

  200. When that demon possessed, a girl's mom came to ask him and she wasn't a Jew.

  201. And then, of course, Jesus in compassion saves her daughter.

  202. And they believe in him by grace to turn the tables.

  203. And Paul is following Christ's own pattern here.

  204. In the ancient world, most dogs were not pets, but were street mongrels scavenging scraps from stinking garbage heaps.

  205. Disgusting and defiling carpaces were what they would eat for their snacks.

  206. In Exodus 22, 31, listen to this.

  207. It's most likely where this became their phrase.

  208. Exodus 22, 31, God says, you shall be consecrated to me, O Israelite people.

  209. Therefore, you shall not eat any flesh that is torn by the beasts of the field.

  210. These decaying carcasses don't eat roadkill.

  211. Don't do that.

  212. Instead, throw it to the dogs.

  213. See, you people of Israel are clean and consecrated.

  214. Throw the trash to the dogs.

  215. The legalists, following the ministry of the gospel, they wanted to bind Christians to a certain diet, condemning anyone who would not eat kosher food.

  216. And Paul portrayed them as being the ones that are feasting on poisonous food like disease infected tramps.

  217. See how I turned the table on them?

  218. You're trying to say you have to be kosher, have this Jewish diet to be in the people of God.

  219. No, to bind God's true people that way is to be a dog yourself.

  220. Their pedigree is not based on a Jewish ceremonial law.

  221. It's not that at all.

  222. And he's going to explain what the true identity is.

  223. So Christians, beware of dogs.

  224. Who would try to say, based on what you put into your mouth, you're the mutt.

  225. Beware of that.

  226. Number two is the evil workers.

  227. Those are the false teachers who would try to rob the Christian's joy in Jesus by putting confidence in your own performance.

  228. Those who place their confidence of acceptance by God in detailed, obedient keeping of the ritual, ceremonial and ethical demands of the old covenant and the Jewish tradition.

  229. See, they're saying you have to do all these works according to the old covenant laws for the people of God in the land.

  230. And Paul says by telling people that you are the ones, instead of doing good and performing your way to God's pleasure, you are the evil workers.

  231. He turns the table on them in just the same way.

  232. And the third one is the mutilation.

  233. These are the ones who rob a Christian's joy in Jesus by putting confidence in external consecration or external purity.

  234. These Judaizers that followed around the ministry of the gospel by trying to bind the conscience of Christians beyond what Christ intended.

  235. They taught that if you lack this external sign of circumcision, then you are not welcome in God's presence.

  236. And Paul turns the table on them by calling these outward Jews only pagan idol worshipers by calling them the mutilation.

  237. That's exactly what he's alluding to.

  238. Paul selected the very same word that the Greek Old Testament uses of those self-mutilating prophets of Baal.

  239. Do you remember that story in 1 Kings 1828?

  240. How the prophets of Baal come before this altar that's set up as a big, great contest and they cry aloud and they cut themselves.

  241. They self-mutilate after their custom with swords and lances until the blood gashed out upon them.

  242. What's more is that if a priest in the Old Testament had suffered some kind of mutilation, you know, maybe a rope got tangled around the pinky and it snapped the pinky off.

  243. Now that priest was no longer allowed in the presence of the Holy God.

  244. They'd had a mutilation and they were not consecrated, no longer able to be servants in the temple.

  245. So by calling these these legalists that were putting all the confidence in this external sign of circumcision, he calls them now the ones who are not welcome in God's presence.

  246. Because God is not looking for an outward external circumcision.

  247. As with anything precious, raiders will try to rob you in me, just like the church in Philippi of our joy in the Lord.

  248. Number three.

  249. So what do we do?

  250. We must refute the threats to our joy in the Lord.

  251. You and I must refute.

  252. We must fight against, push back these threats to our joy in the Lord.

  253. Johnson again commented how the religious recipe in which Paul had been raised.

  254. It was a formula that blended God's initial grace with a person's own best efforts in order to yield divine approval at the final judgment.

  255. So Paul was raised in that Jewish Hebrew tradition.

  256. God initiates you in this walk of faith and then your own best efforts at all this law keeping are what will finally give you a standing before God.

  257. And he'll say you're approved because you did your best at the final judgment.

  258. That's what Paul was brought up on.

  259. I'm afraid many of us were brought up on something similar, a version of that.

  260. And so we must refute threats like that because there will be no joy in Christ if you're living in that kind of false religious formula.

  261. And how does Paul refute it?

  262. Well, first of all, he's establishing his own credibility as one who can say, been there, tried that.

  263. It doesn't work.

  264. And he's going to bring the gospel instead.

  265. So here's Paul establishing his credibility.

  266. Remember those three P's, the pedigree, performance and purity.

  267. Watch how Paul shows how he can speak to any one of those better than any of these other Judaizers.

  268. Regarding the confidence in pedigree, Paul says in verse five, I was circumcised the eighth day.

  269. I got that external sign and I'm of the stock of Israel.

  270. Not only do I have the external sign, I got the internal genes.

  271. I'm of the tribe of Benjamin.

  272. Well, Benjamin was the favorite of Israel's sons and the only one born in the promised land,

  273. according to Genesis 35, 16 through 18.

  274. You remember who else was from Benjamin?

  275. It was the first king of Israel.

  276. Do you remember what his name was?

  277. Saul.

  278. See God's wonderful providence?

  279. Saul in the New Testament, who God renames Paul,

  280. was named after Saul, the great king from the tribe of Benjamin,

  281. who was pleasing to men, but not to God.

  282. Remember who Saul persecuted?

  283. David, the type of Christ, the king after God's own heart,

  284. just as Saul persecuted the church.

  285. And Jesus said, you're persecuting me.

  286. Isn't God's providence amazing?

  287. He says in verse five, I was a Hebrew of the Hebrews.

  288. In other words, I wasn't a mixed breed mutt.

  289. My parents, they raised me going to Hebrew school.

  290. And Paul says that the Jews who follow Jesus,

  291. if you say you follow Jesus,

  292. you have no right to treat another follower of Jesus as second class.

  293. That's not the gospel.

  294. You're the real dog if that's what you do.

  295. Brief point of application.

  296. No one should look down on a fellow Christian based on what denomination they go to, for example.

  297. Don't we so quickly get proud and puffed up?

  298. If someone loves Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior,

  299. and they're growing as a disciple where God has put them,

  300. we should praise the Lord, and we should encourage them in the faith.

  301. There's no room for pride.

  302. There's no room for denominationalism in that proud sense.

  303. We don't compromise on our convictions of the Bible,

  304. but man, we better do it with a gospel tone, right?

  305. Number two, here's Paul's credibility for having confidence in his own performance.

  306. Verse five, he said,

  307. Concerning the law, I was a Pharisee.

  308. I'm the best of the law keepers.

  309. I wasn't like those liberal Sadducees.

  310. I actually believe in the resurrection of the dead.

  311. I believe what the Bible taught.

  312. If you remember, Saul was discipled by Gamaliel,

  313. and we read in Acts 5, 34 through 39,

  314. that Paul's mentor was able to persuade the entire Sanhedrin.

  315. This would be like standing up in the middle of Congress,

  316. where you've got House of Representatives and Senators all together,

  317. and you're able to persuade the whole nation.

  318. That was Paul's mentor.

  319. So you want to talk about performance?

  320. Paul's got that.

  321. In verse six, he says,

  322. Concerning zeal, I was persecuting the church.

  323. I was trying to wipe out the Jesus sect.

  324. Well, if you and I rely on works,

  325. or our own performance,

  326. or things that we think we have done for God,

  327. Paul does not mince words.

  328. He says,

  329. All those things you thought you were doing as a good work,

  330. you were a worker of evil.

  331. One example recently would be like,

  332. Oh, you know, your church didn't do this toy drive,

  333. or, well, I mean, our church not only did a toy drive,

  334. we also brought Santa into the church

  335. so that people could take their pictures with him.

  336. Jesus says,

  337. You're a worker of evil.

  338. Did I tell you to do that?

  339. You're trying to pile on all these burdens on God's people.

  340. That's not what you're called to.

  341. And what about confidence and purity?

  342. Paul says in verse 6,

  343. Concerning the righteousness which is in the law,

  344. blameless.

  345. The Torah, the five books of the law,

  346. and the first five that Moses wrote,

  347. they include, according to the rabbis who have studied them,

  348. 613 laws in the Torah itself.

  349. But Paul says,

  350. Not only did I keep all of those,

  351. I also kept all of the traditions of the rabbis.

  352. That's called the Mishnah.

  353. And if you read reports of those who were grown up,

  354. even today,

  355. in that type of legalistic faith,

  356. they will say things like this.

  357. You're not allowed to walk more than six feet

  358. once you wake up in the morning,

  359. until you wash your hands with water

  360. that you had prepared

  361. and left by your bedside the night before.

  362. You must wait six hours after eating chicken

  363. before you can eat any dairy product.

  364. You're not allowed to light a lamp.

  365. You're not even allowed to ask your non-Jewish friend

  366. that's in the same room to light the lamp

  367. or turn on the light for you.

  368. But instead you have to hint at it.

  369. Isn't it a little dark in here?

  370. And see if they'll pick up on your hint

  371. and turn it on for you if it's the Sabbath

  372. so that you're not breaking the Sabbath commandment.

  373. You can't even rip toilet paper on Shabbat or the Sabbath.

  374. And you have to go to sleep on your left side

  375. and then wake up on your right side.

  376. And if you hear the references,

  377. where is this from?

  378. It's not from God's inspired word.

  379. It's from, they'll refer to rabbis

  380. who are then scholars of rabbis.

  381. They'll say things like it's from Shabbat

  382. based on the Rambam.

  383. And so you really have to understand

  384. all the teachings of the law keepers

  385. in order to be able to say like Paul

  386. concerning the righteousness

  387. which is in the law, blameless.

  388. You can almost hear his tone.

  389. I hate the law.

  390. I did it all.

  391. I tried it.

  392. You don't want to know the true God of the Bible.

  393. You want to keep loving an idol that you call Jesus,

  394. which is piling on wickedness

  395. because now you're blasphemy.

  396. You're calling this idol in your own mind, Jesus.

  397. But you don't really want to know

  398. the true God of the Bible.

  399. And yet you condemn someone who loves the Lord Jesus.

  400. It says, have mercy on me.

  401. And who's a chain smoker for smoking?

  402. You know, they're not pure.

  403. Well, do they love the Lord Jesus?

  404. Paul says everything else is evil works.

  405. They're the mutilation.

  406. If you think it's your lifestyle

  407. that gives you access to the Holy God,

  408. you're a mutilator.

  409. You are unfit to be in the presence of the Holy God.

  410. Well, you and I, like Paul,

  411. even though our context is different,

  412. we need to refute those subtle ways

  413. that the gospel will be undermined

  414. and our joy in the Lord will be robbed.

  415. The way we do that is number four.

  416. It's we rehearse our grounds

  417. for rejoicing in the Lord.

  418. That's what Paul does really

  419. with the rest of this passage.

  420. He rehearses with the Philippian church,

  421. third person plural,

  422. we together, Paul and the church.

  423. Here's our grounds for rejoicing in the Lord.

  424. Who is it that truly belongs to God's kingdom?

  425. Who is his covenant people?

  426. And Paul says in verse three,

  427. we are the circumcision.

  428. The Jew of Jews saying,

  429. I am one with you, Philippians.

  430. You know, it only took 10 men

  431. to form a synagogue,

  432. a place where you could read the word of God.

  433. And historians have found no evidence

  434. that there was ever a synagogue

  435. in the city of Philippi.

  436. It was a very Gentile city

  437. in a very Gentile church.

  438. And here's the Jew of Jews

  439. after laying out all of his credentials,

  440. his resume,

  441. so the Judaizers can't get a foothold.

  442. He says, I'm with the Gentile church.

  443. I'm with these believers

  444. who love the Lord Jesus, nothing else.

  445. He identifies with them

  446. just as Christ identified with his people

  447. while they were still his enemies.

  448. And he tells them, church, rejoice.

  449. We are the circumcision.

  450. We are the covenant people of God.

  451. Rejoice because to the church believers

  452. from all nations,

  453. to us belong the fullest flowering

  454. of all of God's promises.

  455. You know these.

  456. Let me remind you of a couple.

  457. Isaiah 53, 5.

  458. You're condemned people of God.

  459. You're banished away because you're sin.

  460. You lost the land.

  461. But the punishment,

  462. the chastisement that you deserve

  463. that will bring you peace

  464. and restore you to God,

  465. it will be laid not on you

  466. but on the coming Messiah.

  467. Jeremiah 31, verses 31 through 34,

    Jeremiah 31:31–34

  468. there will be a new covenant

  469. cut between God and man

  470. in which God will remember

  471. the sins of his people no more.

  472. Now the revelation we get

  473. through Jesus Christ

  474. and the Holy Spirit breathing out

  475. the New Testament

  476. is that this has happened.

  477. Colossians 2, 11.

  478. In him, Jesus Christ,

  479. you also were circumcised

  480. with the circumcision made without hands

  481. by putting off the body

  482. of the sins of the flesh

  483. by the circumcision of Christ.

  484. Christ's death on the cross

  485. was his circumcision.

  486. He was cut off

  487. so that you could be grafted in.

  488. He was punished

  489. so that you could be blessed.

  490. Paul says in Romans 2, 29,

  491. a Jew is one inwardly.

  492. Circumcision is a matter of the heart

  493. by the Spirit,

  494. not in the law.

  495. Because Jesus was cut off,

  496. he was crucified.

  497. Now the Holy Spirit

  498. applies his circumcision,

  499. his death on the cross for sin,

  500. he applies that now

  501. to your heart and mind

  502. through regeneration.

  503. He melts your heart of stone.

  504. He gives you the circumcision

  505. of the heart

  506. that's inward wrought in us

  507. by the Holy Spirit.

  508. So you can rejoice

  509. because now you can

  510. approach God

  511. in Jesus Christ.

  512. In verse 3,

  513. Paul says,

  514. you now worship God

  515. in the Spirit.

  516. Church, we too can rejoice.

  517. We are in the unprecedented era

  518. that Ezekiel prophesied

  519. in chapter 37,

  520. verses 26 through 28.

  521. We are now God's nation

  522. that is marked by

  523. a central blessing

  524. that God dwells eternally

  525. in the midst of his people

  526. in an everlasting covenant.

  527. This is what we get

  528. to be part of

  529. by belonging to him

  530. in his church.

  531. So the question was,

  532. if you're not to put

  533. your confidence

  534. in your own flesh,

  535. what do you put

  536. your confidence in?

  537. And he answers that

  538. very clearly in verse 3.

  539. He says three things.

  540. Here's where true confidence

  541. that you belong to God

  542. is found.

  543. Number one,

  544. you worship God

  545. in the Spirit.

  546. Number two,

  547. you rejoice

  548. in Christ Jesus.

  549. Number three,

  550. you put no confidence

  551. in your flesh.

  552. When we get to approach

  553. the Holy God

  554. through the work

  555. of Jesus Christ,

  556. we are experiencing,

  557. we are rejoicing,

  558. we are taking

  559. what he has purchased

  560. for us

  561. with his own blood.

  562. Worship is a privilege

  563. and a right we have

  564. by belonging to him

  565. that he purchased

  566. at such a high cost.

  567. There's no way

  568. that sinners like us

  569. could be with the Holy God

  570. except for Jesus Christ

  571. who came to satisfy

  572. all righteousness

  573. and to make a way

  574. for sinners like us

  575. freely

  576. to be in the presence

  577. of God.

  578. When we're in his presence,

  579. you stirred up

  580. to rejoice.

  581. that's the Holy Spirit

  582. applying to us

  583. the joy of Christ.

  584. Zephaniah 317 says

  585. that the Lord God

  586. is in your midst,

  587. a mighty one

  588. who will save you

  589. and he will rejoice

  590. over you

  591. with gladness.

  592. It's Jesus rejoicing

  593. over us

  594. with gladness

  595. and that

  596. stirs up

  597. and pulls out of us

  598. a rejoicing

  599. in response to him.

  600. So the true

  601. identifying mark

  602. of the covenant

  603. people of God,

  604. those who truly

  605. belong to him,

  606. is that you worship

  607. the triune God.

  608. Ephesians 218,

  609. it's through Jesus Christ

  610. that we have access

  611. by one spirit

  612. to the Father.

  613. We must rehearse

  614. our grounds

  615. for rejoicing

  616. in the Lord.

  617. The reality is that

  618. as much as we rehearse

  619. this and we keep

  620. coming together

  621. and reminding one another,

  622. we're always under attack.

  623. We are in a battle.

  624. So my fifth encouragement

  625. for us is that

  626. when we do have

  627. those waves of doubt,

  628. those spiritual doubts,

  629. we need to follow

  630. Paul's example,

  631. look back on our own lives,

  632. take stock,

  633. and we calculate

  634. what is most precious.

  635. Because if we're honest,

  636. we'll be reminding ourselves

  637. that there is only

  638. one precious treasure

  639. and it's deep inside my soul

  640. where no one can steal it.

  641. So we battle

  642. our spiritual doubts

  643. by calculating

  644. what is most precious

  645. in your life.

  646. Paul says,

  647. Church,

  648. don't let these false teachers

  649. lead you in the wrong way.

  650. Take my own example.

  651. I've laid out

  652. my credentials for you.

  653. Don't fall into that

  654. poisonous religious recipe.

  655. Don't do it.

  656. Because if you do,

  657. it'll push you

  658. in two directions.

  659. you will either live

  660. with nervous uncertainty

  661. that you're not pure enough,

  662. you have not performed enough,

  663. you have not done enough,

  664. and you'll never have

  665. an assurance of faith.

  666. Or,

  667. you will be proud

  668. and puffed up

  669. and overconfident

  670. in your own flesh,

  671. in your own self.

  672. That ambitious overconfidence

  673. in what you'll be doing

  674. is burdening other believers.

  675. So don't follow that path.

  676. Either way,

  677. you will come up

  678. disappointed

  679. and hurting

  680. the very one

  681. who saved you.

  682. In verse 7,

  683. Paul says,

  684. what things were gain

  685. to me.

  686. So Paul looks back

  687. at his resume

  688. and he said,

  689. I used to think

  690. that was a star

  691. and this was a star

  692. and all these things

  693. made me shine.

  694. But now I look back

  695. and what I thought

  696. was gain,

  697. I had rested

  698. my confidence

  699. of those things.

  700. Now I have counted

  701. them loss

  702. for Christ.

  703. In the light

  704. of the gospel,

  705. he now finds

  706. all those

  707. personal achievements

  708. repellent

  709. and defiling

  710. before the face

  711. of God.

  712. In verse 8,

  713. he says,

  714. indeed,

  715. I also count

  716. all things

  717. loss.

  718. loss.

  719. The word loss

  720. that he's using

  721. really means damage.

  722. What I thought

  723. was helping

  724. was doing damage.

  725. He's using

  726. banking terms.

  727. See,

  728. in verse 7,

  729. he says,

  730. what I thought

  731. was gain to me,

  732. I thought that

  733. was a profit.

  734. He says,

  735. it was actually

  736. counted loss.

  737. You know,

  738. this is true.

  739. You get a credit

  740. card.

  741. You'll never

  742. grow in your wealth

  743. if you keep

  744. plunging yourself

  745. further and

  746. further into debt.

  747. You can never

  748. enjoy a rich

  749. spiritual life

  750. if you keep

  751. digging yourself

  752. deeper and deeper

  753. into a self-righteous

  754. hole.

  755. Paul tells

  756. his testimony

  757. in verse 8,

  758. for the excellence

  759. of the knowledge

  760. of Christ

  761. Jesus,

  762. my Lord.

  763. Everything else

  764. pales in comparison.

  765. This is the only

  766. time

  767. in the New Testament

  768. when Paul

  769. refers to Jesus

  770. as my

  771. Lord,

  772. my God.

  773. His testimony,

  774. we get in the letter

  775. to 1 Timothy 1,

    1 Timothy 1:13–16

  776. verses 13 through 16.

  777. Paul wrote,

  778. though formerly

  779. I was a blasphemer,

  780. persecutor,

  781. and insolent opponent,

  782. but the grace

  783. of the Lord

  784. overflowed

  785. for me

  786. with the faith

  787. and love

  788. that are in Christ

  789. Jesus.

  790. In Christ,

  791. Jesus came into

  792. the world

  793. to save sinners

  794. of whom

  795. I am the foremost.

  796. Why?

  797. That in me,

  798. Jesus Christ

  799. might display

  800. his perfect patience

  801. as an example

  802. to you

  803. who now believe

  804. in him

  805. for eternal life.

  806. In verse 8,

  807. he says,

  808. yes,

  809. I've suffered

  810. the loss

  811. of all things

  812. for Christ.

  813. Paul had forfeited

  814. his reputation,

  815. his self-respect,

  816. his standing

  817. in the community,

  818. his personal safety,

  819. and more,

  820. but he says,

  821. I gained Christ.

  822. I'm found in Christ

  823. and I know him.

  824. He bears witness

  825. to the same thing

  826. that James does

  827. in James 1,

  828. 2,

  829. and 3.

  830. He says,

  831. consider it

  832. pure joy,

  833. my brethren,

  834. whenever you face

  835. trials of many kinds

  836. because you know

  837. that the testing

  838. of your faith

  839. produces perseverance.

  840. When you suffer

  841. for Christ's name,

  842. consider it joy.

  843. James says,

  844. no,

  845. consider it pure joy

  846. to suffer for Christ.

  847. Paul says,

  848. all of those things

  849. that I thought

  850. were adding my value,

  851. this is like revenue,

  852. profit on my account.

  853. That was a massive debt

  854. and I had to declare bankruptcy

  855. before the Holy God.

  856. those things

  857. were damaging

  858. my standing before God.

  859. In verse 8,

  860. he says,

  861. I count them

  862. as rubbish,

  863. refuse,

  864. which is rotting food,

  865. or dung.

  866. Children,

  867. dung is what we flush.

  868. That's why he says,

  869. compared to Christ,

  870. it's garbage.

  871. It's worse than worthless.

  872. If you're like me,

  873. this is searching

  874. because my flesh

  875. so often wants

  876. to go there again.

  877. Am I doing enough?

  878. Am I going to be,

  879. you know,

  880. show up before the Lord

  881. and he's going to look

  882. at my life?

  883. Will he be pleased

  884. with my performance?

  885. And then I'm exposed

  886. to his law

  887. and I'm just laid low

  888. once again.

  889. And if the Holy Spirit

  890. is breaking up

  891. the hard soil

  892. in your heart

  893. and in mine,

  894. we will want to weep.

  895. I'm so encouraged

  896. by the passage

  897. we read earlier.

  898. Justin read for us

  899. Nehemiah 8

  900. in verses 9 and 10.

  901. After they had read

  902. the law of God

  903. and the people weep

  904. and mourn

  905. over their sin,

  906. the Leap Knights

  907. taught the people

  908. and the people

  909. all wept

  910. as they heard

  911. the words of the law.

  912. But then God

  913. said to them,

  914. and God says this

  915. to us now

  916. after you've repented,

  917. do not mourn

  918. or weep.

  919. This is the holy day

  920. of the Lord your God.

  921. Do not be grieved

  922. for the joy

  923. of the Lord

  924. is your strength.

  925. You see how quick

  926. God is,

  927. how ready he is

  928. to forgive us

  929. and to restore us.

  930. And we rest

  931. in Jesus Christ

  932. and we say,

  933. this is my only gain,

  934. my only treasure.

  935. This is the precious possession.

  936. I have Christ.

  937. I know him.

  938. I'm right before God

  939. because it's his righteousness

  940. covering me.

  941. There's an infinitely

  942. more valuable treasure

  943. than anything

  944. this world can offer

  945. and it's to have communion

  946. with God

  947. through Jesus Christ,

  948. to have the spirit

  949. of the holy God

  950. dwelling in your soul,

  951. the place where no robber

  952. can break in and steal,

  953. where moths and rust

  954. can't destroy.

  955. He is your treasure.

  956. So Paul says,

  957. I count it all.

  958. An easy loss.

  959. No brainer

  960. because I got Christ.

  961. There was a missionary

  962. who moved to Ecuador

  963. and into the jungles

  964. of Ecuador

  965. to take the gospel

  966. to an unreached

  967. people group there.

  968. And he died.

  969. He was speared to death.

  970. His name was Jim Elliot

  971. along with others

  972. on his team.

  973. But his wife

  974. kept his story

  975. and Jim Elliot's testimony

  976. even dying

  977. at a very young age

  978. was this.

  979. He is no fool

  980. who gives

  981. what he cannot keep

  982. to gain

  983. what he cannot lose.

  984. So we need to battle

  985. our spiritual doubts,

  986. calculate what is most precious

  987. in this life truly.

  988. And the sixth point is this,

  989. that when you meet your maker,

  990. make sure

  991. you'll be able

  992. to rejoice.

  993. grace.

  994. We will all meet our maker.

  995. Your soul will meet him

  996. the moment you die.

  997. And in the fullness of time

  998. when Christ returns,

  999. there will be a great resurrection.

  1000. Saved and unsaved

  1001. will be resurrected

  1002. and stand before

  1003. the creator

  1004. of all.

  1005. My encouragement

  1006. to you who God

  1007. has brought here today

  1008. once again

  1009. is make sure

  1010. you will be able

  1011. to rejoice

  1012. that day.

  1013. How?

1014. That's what Paul tells us

  1015. in verses 9 through 11.

  1016. See heaven

  1017. where our souls go

  1018. and the new heavens

  1019. and the earth

1020. where the glory of God

  1021. fills the earth

  1022. as the waters

  1023. cover the sea.

  1024. It's a place

  1025. where the angels

  1026. are rejoicing

  1027. in his presence,

  1028. delighting in him,

  1029. where the souls

  1030. of those he saved

  1031. are singing before him.

  1032. That's why C.S. Lewis

  1033. I think rightly said

  1034. joy is the serious

  1035. business of heaven.

1036. Make sure you'll be able

  1037. to rejoice as well.

  1038. On what basis

  1039. can you know this?

1040. When you have to give

1041. an account to your God,

  1042. what will he accept?

  1043. According to verse 9,

  1044. your only hope

  1045. of rejoicing in heaven

1046. when you meet your maker

  1047. is to be found

  1048. in him.

  1049. to be found

  1050. in Christ's righteousness

  1051. not your own merits,

  1052. but in him.

  1053. The holy life

  1054. of Jesus Christ

  1055. roping,

  1056. covering you

  1057. completely

  1058. so that that's all

1059. the holy God can see

  1060. is Christ

  1061. clothing you.

  1062. Paul writes

  1063. in verse 9,

  1064. not having

  1065. my own righteousness

1066. which is from the law,

  1067. from things

  1068. I must do.

  1069. Whatever brings

  1070. you glory

  1071. in this life,

  1072. it's really like

1073. a big bag of sand

  1074. tied to your ankle

  1075. pulling you deeper

  1076. and deeper

  1077. into the ocean.

1078. If it brings you glory,

  1079. it's pulling you

  1080. toward hell.

  1081. You don't want

  1082. anything

  1083. of your righteousness.

  1084. You want

  1085. the righteousness

  1086. of Christ,

  1087. that which

  1088. he freely

  1089. put onto you,

  1090. the only way

  1091. he gives it.

  1092. He says also

  1093. in verse 9,

  1094. you get this

  1095. righteousness

  1096. that is Christ

  1097. through faith

  1098. in him.

  1099. Not by works,

  1100. but by receiving

  1101. freely.

  1102. As Calvin said,

  1103. faith is the

  1104. poor beggar's hand.

  1105. It's the instrument

  1106. that God puts

  1107. the blessings

  1108. of Christ

  1109. and makes him

  1110. your savior.

  1111. You bring nothing

  1112. to the equation.

  1113. The uncompromised

  1114. only criteria

  1115. that the holy God

  1116. will accept

  1117. is the righteousness

  1118. which is

  1119. from God

  1120. by faith.

  1121. It's faith alone,

  1122. not faith

  1123. plus anything else.

  1124. And when you

  1125. behold God

  1126. in Jesus Christ

  1127. by faith,

  1128. God promises

  1129. verse 10

  1130. that you will

  1131. know him.

  1132. You will have

  1133. such close union

  1134. that he is

  1135. already sharing

  1136. with you

  1137. now in this life

  1138. the power

  1139. of the resurrection.

  1140. It says,

  1141. Holy Spirit

  1142. making you

  1143. a new creation

  1144. already,

  1145. killing sin in you,

  1146. growing your love

  1147. for God,

  1148. causing you

  1149. to rejoice.

  1150. You see how

  1151. suffering prepares

  1152. you to rejoice

  1153. in heaven.

  1154. The more closely

  1155. you and I

  1156. identify with Christ

  1157. right now

  1158. in his suffering,

  1159. in his death

  1160. on the cross

  1161. to save us,

  1162. the more he

  1163. strips our souls

  1164. away of our own

  1165. flesh and our

  1166. remaining sin.

  1167. It's suffering

  1168. that he uses

  1169. to sanctify

  1170. and prepare us

  1171. to rejoice

  1172. in his presence.

  1173. In verse 10,

  1174. Paul calls this

  1175. the fellowship

  1176. of Christ's

  1177. suffering.

  1178. We are

  1179. fellowshipping,

  1180. we are partners,

  1181. we are communing

  1182. with Jesus Christ

  1183. when we suffer

  1184. in Christ,

  1185. which God uses

  1186. to make you

  1187. more and more

  1188. conformed

  1189. to his death.

  1190. Not alive to

  1191. yourself and your

  1192. flesh,

  1193. but conformed

  1194. to the death

  1195. of Christ.

  1196. He died for you,

  1197. now he lives

  1198. in you.

  1199. You share

  1200. in his death

  1201. on the cross,

  1202. you belong to him,

  1203. and you will

  1204. share in his

  1205. resurrection.

  1206. Fellowship

  1207. with our

  1208. Lord Jesus Christ,

  1209. especially in

  1210. suffering,

  1211. is the way

  1212. that God

  1213. purifies you

  1214. and it's the way

  1215. that he grows

  1216. your assurance.

  1217. God proves

  1218. himself over

  1219. and over

  1220. and over

  1221. because in

  1222. that suffering

  1223. you are not

  1224. alone,

  1225. the Lord Jesus

  1226. was with you

  1227. through it.

  1228. And that's

  1229. the confidence

  1230. we need to

  1231. know that when

  1232. I meet my

  1233. maker,

  1234. I will be

  1235. able to

  1236. rejoice.

  1237. That's what

  1238. it means to

  1239. attain the

  1240. resurrection

  1241. from the

  1242. dead with

  1243. rejoicing.

  1244. Well,

  1245. Henry Ford

  1246. had said

  1247. from the

  1248. perspective

  1249. of proud

  1250. fallen man

  1251. under the

  1252. curse of

  1253. a covenant

  1254. of works,

  1255. this lie,

  1256. there is no

  1257. happiness except

  1258. in the

  1259. realization

  1260. that we

  1261. have accomplished

  1262. something.

  1263. You see how

  1264. Paul just

  1265. totally destroyed

  1266. that statement.

  1267. the truth

  1268. of the

  1269. gospel is

  1270. this,

  1271. that there

  1272. is no

  1273. joy except

  1274. in communion

  1275. with the

  1276. triune God

  1277. because Jesus

  1278. Christ has

  1279. accomplished

  1280. everything for

  1281. those who

  1282. love him.

  1283. Make sure

  1284. you love

  1285. the Lord

  1286. Jesus Christ

  1287. and you

  1288. commune with

  1289. him again

  1290. today.

  1291. Remember

  1292. Jesus'

  1293. words in

  1294. John 16

  1295. 22,

  1296. you have

  1297. sorrow now,

  1298. but I

  1299. will see you

  1300. again.

  1301. Your hearts

  1302. will rejoice

  1303. and no one

  1304. will take

  1305. your joy

  1306. from you.

  1307. When you

  1308. meet your

  1309. maker,

  1310. make sure

  1311. you'll be

  1312. able to

  1313. rejoice.

  1314. Let's

  1315. pray.

  1316. Amen.
