  1. Our sermon text today is Philippians chapter 4, verses 1 through 7.

    Philippians 4:1–7

  2. Philippians 4, 1 through 7.

  3. I read this trusting it as God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, authoritative word for you, His people.

  4. If you receive it that way, then you can respond at the end.

  5. Thanks be to God.

  6. Philippians 4, 1 through 7.

  7. Therefore, my beloved and longed-for brethren, my joy and my crown, so stand fast in the Lord, beloved.

  8. I implore Euodia and I implore Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord.

  9. And I urge you also, true companion, help these women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also.

  10. And the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.

  11. Rejoice in the Lord always.

  12. Again, I will say, rejoice.

  13. Let your gentleness be known to all.

  14. The Lord is at hand.

  15. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving,

  16. let your requests be made known to God.

  17. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

  18. This is the word of the Lord for the people of God.

  19. Thanks be to God.

  20. You may be seated.

  21. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  22. Luke 1, 37.

  23. No word from the mouth of God shall be void of power.

  24. Let's pray.

  25. Amen.

  26. Amen.

  27. Amen.

  28. Amen.

  29. Amen.

  30. Amen.

  31. Amen.

  32. God, we ask that your Holy Spirit will please shine the light of Christ on these words

  33. and apply them to our lives, to our minds, our hearts, our attitudes, especially toward other Christians.

  34. We ask, Lord, that you will show us the power of Jesus Christ

  35. and how his power over his people changes everything.

  36. For your glory we pray.

  37. Amen.

  38. Well, I was hearing a report from one of these pastors

  39. about how four different Reformed Baptist pastors

  40. were invited to a church in the Midwest,

  41. and they spent one week there.

  42. Each one of those four pastors worked for 80 hours on one project.

  43. By the end of that one laborious week,

  44. each pastor had a binder like this full of handwritten notes

  45. from all of the people they had talked with,

  46. trying to understand and uncover the problem

  47. that they were called to work on.

  48. What was their work that they had to do?

  49. What was this project?

  50. There was conflict, interpersonal conflict,

  51. within the congregation of another church,

  52. and they needed help.

  53. One of those pastors who I've learned a lot from on this topic,

  54. his name is Brian Borgman of the great state of Nevada,

  55. and he has so much experience, but he very humbly said

  56. there's not a lot of helpful books on interpersonal conflict

  57. within the church that he found useful in that situation,

  58. but what God did make very useful

  59. and what God did cause him to study more in depth over time

  60. was these two or three verses in the letter of Philippians

  61. that we just read.

  62. My sermon for us today,

  63. it's about conflict,

  64. but I want to point out to you,

  65. in this passage we read,

  66. these seven verses,

  67. I think there's battle language once again.

  68. It should be no surprise by this point,

  69. knowing Paul and knowing his audience in Philippi.

  70. Would you look at verse one?

  71. He says in verse one,

  72. stand fast.

  73. That's military language.

  74. I'll do my best to show you why here in a moment.

  75. Stand fast.

  76. That's verse one.

  77. Now look at the end of this little inclusio.

  78. Verse seven,

  79. God will guard you through Christ Jesus.

  80. That's the two bookends.

  81. It's military language for battle.

  82. Stand fast.

  83. God will guard you.

  84. And what's in the middle of this little sandwich?

  85. It's a conflict within the church.

  86. So what can this teach us about conflict among Christians?

  87. Well, my message for you today from this passage

  88. is how Christ conquers conflict.

  89. Christ conquers conflict.

  90. With God's help,

  91. I hope to show you how he wants us to see conflict among Christians,

  92. what we must discern in such conflicts,

  93. two instructions we have on getting through the conflict,

  94. and finally,

  95. what we must trust as we work through a conflict within the church.

  96. So number one,

  97. see the conflict with spiritual eyes.

  98. He begins this thought by reminding the church of who they are in the eyes of God.

  99. In verse one,

  100. you,

  101. Christian,

  102. are beloved.

  103. That other Christian that you have bad feelings toward,

  104. they are beloved.

  105. They are the bride of Christ.

  106. And he calls them very personally,

  107. my longed for brethren.

  108. My brothers and sisters that I long for.

  109. My heart toward every one of you is to be with you.

  110. I long for you.

  111. He calls them my joy.

  112. When I think of the church,

  113. these individuals,

  114. this body,

  115. that's the source of my greatest joy.

  116. Not anything this world can give me.

  117. And he calls them my crown.

  118. So see one another through spiritual eyes.

  119. Beloved.

  120. Jesus Christ is the lover of the soul of his church.

  121. And the church is the beloved of Christ.

  122. Every single one of the New Testament authors refers to the church as the beloved of Jesus Christ.

  123. He says,

  124. longed for brethren.

  125. Maybe you have a moment where you remember missing one of your siblings.

  126. My brother and I and my sister too,

  127. we were very close.

  128. And I remember,

  129. I'm the oldest,

  130. when I went off to college and just was going to come back,

  131. how much I longed to be with them.

  132. Just really missed my family,

  133. my brothers and sisters.

  134. I miss them.

  135. And he calls them my joy.

  136. My joy is being with God's people.

  137. When I'm with God's people,

  138. my brothers and sisters,

  139. the one that Christ loves,

  140. that's when I get the taste of heaven.

  141. That fellowship we share here on earth with the brethren,

  142. that's my joy.

  143. That's what I want more than anything else.

  144. And he calls them my crown.

  145. I think this is,

  146. is Paul taking almost like a grandfather,

  147. paternal,

  148. loving care over all the Christians in this little congregation.

  149. Proverbs 17,

  150. 17,

  151. six says,

  152. children's children are a crown to the aged.

  153. You want to see a grandpa or a grandma light up?

  154. It's when they look at their grandkids and they see them doing something.

  155. It's their crown.

  156. You know,

  157. all my other achievements,

  158. whatever else I did with work,

  159. I,

  160. I am so proud of my grandkids.

  161. That's my crown.

  162. I think that's how Paul is expressing his Christ-like love toward the church.

  163. Okay.

  164. Okay.

  165. If all of this is true,

  166. why is there such big conflict that it makes it into this letter?

  167. You can only address so many things in four short chapters.

  168. Well,

  169. whatever is true of us as Christians in the,

  170. the spiritual realm,

  171. that's the already that Christ has already secured for us.

  172. It's true.

  173. It's our reality.

  174. It's that Roman sevens tension.

  175. So we still have a not yet aspect of living in this flesh in the body.

  176. There's still remaining sin in the flesh of every single Christian.

  177. So we could really make it simple as others have helped me to see whenever there's conflict among Christians,

  178. it's because the not yet aspect of our salvation is eclipsing the already part.

  179. In other words,

  180. what Christ has done is,

  181. is secure,

  182. but I'm still being sanctified.

  183. And there's a lot of me that's not yet conformed to Christ.

  184. That's why we're pressing on together.

  185. We're not fully there yet.

  186. That's what conflict is.

  187. It's,

  188. it's really pretty simple.

  189. He also reminds them not only of what they are,

  190. but what they are not.

  191. Fellow believers are not your enemies.

  192. Would you please keep this finger right here in Philippians four,

  193. but also turn to Ephesians and then put a marker in Ephesians six.

  194. We're saving Philippians four and returning to Ephesians six,

  195. verse 12.

  196. This is helpful because it's our same author.

  197. It's a similar church full of Gentiles and Greeks and Romans and Jewish converts as well

  198. that live in another city.

  199. And his instruction in this spiritual battle is,

  200. is helpful and is very similar.

  201. Notice what Paul says to the church in Ephesus,

  202. Ephesians six,

  203. 12.

  204. Church,

  205. we do not wrestle against flesh and blood.

  206. Fellow believers,

  207. even the ones you're in conflict on,

  208. they are not your enemy.

  209. They're not the true enemy.

  210. We do have a real enemy.

  211. Now back to Philippians four,

  212. look at verse one.

  213. This is the context.

  214. I think we need to read that first verse.

  215. Stand fast in the Lord.

  216. We do have a true enemy.

  217. To stand fast in the military.

  218. That's a holding position.

  219. You only want to hold the high ground.

  220. Once you've already conquered it,

  221. there's nothing more to conquer.

  222. Christ has conquered the high ground.

  223. He puts his church on the high ground.

  224. Stand fast.

  225. Hold what Christ has purchased and accomplished.

  226. What he has been victorious over.

  227. See,

  228. Satan came into this world and took the authority that God delegated to Adam.

  229. And Jesus warns us that Satan is the ruler of this world.

  230. Don't get entangled with this world.

  231. It's under the dominion of the enemy of Satan.

  232. But when Jesus Christ came,

  233. he said,

  234. I came to bind the strong man.

  235. And Christ has bound him up by crushing the serpent's head on the cross.

  236. And now the gospel goes forth to all the nations,

  237. to all the Gentiles,

  238. because Satan is no longer able to deceive them.

  239. And so our battle,

  240. it's not against flesh and blood,

  241. but there's still a retreating enemy,

  242. so to speak.

  243. We're still in this world.

  244. Satan no longer has power over Christ and his church,

  245. but the Christians are in this world,

  246. and we need to stand fast.

  247. There's a war going on.

  248. Flip back to Ephesians 6 again.

  249. Verse 12 continues,

  250. Our battle is against principalities,

  251. against powers,

  252. against the rulers of the darkness of this age,

  253. against the spiritual host of wickedness in the heavenly places.

  254. There is a real spiritual battle.

  255. And when there's conflict within a church,

  256. that's what's really going on.

  257. There is a spiritual dimension to conflict among Christians.

  258. So Ephesians 6, 11,

  259. put on the whole armor of God.

  260. Why?

  261. To stand firm.

  262. The same instruction as Philippians 1, 4-1.

  263. Stand firm against the devil's schemes.

  264. Satan will scheme.

  265. He will try to deceive and confuse.

  266. And he will try to stir up strife and trick Christians

  267. about who the real enemy is.

  268. Stand fast.

  269. Stand firm in Jesus Christ.

  270. So how Christ conquers conflict

  271. is by teaching Christians

  272. to view a conflict with spiritual eyes.

  273. Number two,

  274. Paul sets an example for the church and for all of us.

  275. We are to ask God

  276. for great discernment about conflict.

  277. You notice how Paul is very concise

  278. in how he deals with it?

  279. But you can also just sense

  280. like a veteran grandfather

  281. who's helped so many churches and believers

  282. and has been a missionary,

  283. you know, planting congregations

  284. that are thriving and bearing gospel fruit.

  285. He has so much experience,

  286. and that's partly why he's very direct

  287. and to the point.

  288. Ask God for great discernment.

  289. This is what God has given Paul,

  290. and we can see his example.

  291. In two short verses,

  292. just verses 2 and 3 of Philippians 4,

  293. we can discern at least six insights here.

  294. In verse 2, Paul writes,

  295. I implore Euodia,

  296. and I implore Syntyche.

  297. Remember, this is a letter,

  298. Philippians 1.1,

  299. to the whole congregation,

  300. to the elders, the deacons,

  301. and the whole congregation

  302. of the church in Philippi.

  303. And in this letter to the whole church,

  304. he's imploring two specific individuals.

  305. Why?

  306. Well, apparently the whole church

  307. already knows about this conflict.

  308. And it's big enough

  309. that it needs to be addressed,

  310. even from the Apostle Paul.

  311. What does he implore these two individuals?

  312. He says,

  313. I implore you to be of the same mind

  314. in the Lord.

  315. Paul was never shy

  316. to address ethical problems

  317. within the church,

  318. like think of Corinthians,

  319. where there's messed up relations

  320. going on among the church.

  321. He'll address that very clearly,

  322. straight on.

  323. So, it's most likely

  324. not an ethical issue.

  325. He also is not shy

  326. about addressing doctrinal issues.

  327. Think of his tone

  328. in the letter to the Galatians.

  329. We are not going to dance around here.

  330. This is the true gospel.

  331. We won't take any compromise

  332. on ethics or doctrine.

  333. It's also most likely

  334. not a legal matter between them.

  335. In 1 Corinthians 6,

  336. he says,

  337. you shouldn't be taking

  338. a legal case, you know, outside.

  339. You should be able

  340. to handle even that.

  341. So, he'll address legal issues

  342. when those exist.

  343. So, what can we conclude?

  344. It's most likely

  345. an interpersonal conflict.

  346. It most likely deals with

  347. a relationship

  348. that's very broken now.

  349. A broken trust,

  350. hurt feelings,

  351. things that have been said.

  352. Most likely,

  353. one person feeling

  354. the other one has

  355. a plank in their eye

  356. and the other one

  357. probably feeling the same.

  358. Well, they're the one

  359. with a plank in their eye

  360. and we're stuck.

  361. So, Paul discerned

  362. this is an important

  363. interpersonal matter

  364. that must be addressed publicly.

  365. But number two,

  366. he discerned

  367. that he ought not

  368. to take a side

  369. with either one.

  370. Do you notice how

  371. it's perfectly proportional?

  372. It's measured

  373. equally on both sides.

  374. I implore this person

  375. and I implore that person.

  376. I'm keeping it

  377. neutral and balanced.

  378. I'm imploring you both

  379. have the mind of Christ.

  380. In conflict,

  381. no one likes to back down.

  382. I feel on my point,

  383. I'm right,

  384. I'm going to dig my heels in

  385. and now it's personal

  386. because my pride

  387. is attached to this position

  388. that I took.

  389. At least maybe

  390. that's just me.

  391. But that's the tendency

  392. of our flesh.

  393. And then it's really hard

  394. because whoever hears

  395. the story of either side

  396. is going to think,

  397. you know,

  398. I can see that

  399. and then this side hears

  400. this side,

  401. well, I can see truth

  402. in that too.

  403. So before you know it,

  404. you've got families

  405. and groups within the church

  406. taking one side

  407. or the other

  408. and we end up with

  409. a massive divide

  410. within the congregation.

  411. You can almost hear

  412. one person saying,

  413. you know,

  414. Syntyche,

  415. whose name means fortunate,

  416. she's a godly woman.

  417. We were really sick

  418. and she brought a meal

  419. over to our family.

  420. Of course,

  421. I have to side with her.

  422. You can hear another family

  423. saying,

  424. well,

  425. I know Euodia very well.

  426. Her name means

  427. sweet fragrance

  428. and her name alone

  429. makes me want

  430. to take her side.

  431. So before you know it,

  432. we've got opinions.

  433. And then,

  434. the snowball continues

  435. to grow.

  436. This person over here

  437. is stirring up

  438. some conflict

  439. with another family

  440. over here on this side

  441. and those wounds

  442. that maybe had been addressed,

  443. you thought they were resolved,

  444. all of a sudden,

  445. new conflicts

  446. are opening up.

  447. We've got a big issue

  448. on the hands

  449. of the church.

  450. Paul discerned

  451. he ought not

  452. to necessarily

  453. take a side

  454. in this interpersonal

  455. conflict.

  456. Number three,

  457. Paul discerned

  458. it was urgent.

  459. This is urgent.

  460. We can't keep delaying.

  461. We can't avoid conflict.

  462. This is my time

  463. to help them

  464. walk out Matthew 18

  465. of deal with the conflict.

  466. Deal with what

  467. we have to address.

  468. It's urgent.

  469. The word implore,

  470. it carries that tone

  471. of don't put it off.

  472. Do this right now.

  473. In Mark 5, 23,

  474. we're told of a person

  475. who begged Jesus earnestly

  476. saying,

  477. my little daughter lies

  478. at the point of death,

  479. but if you come,

  480. she will live.

  481. That's the same

  482. Greek word.

  483. I beg you

  484. earnestly

  485. to do this.

  486. Paul implores.

  487. To implore someone

  488. can be a formal address.

  489. It's to plead with,

  490. to beseech,

  491. to entreat,

  492. to urge,

  493. exhort,

  494. admonish.

  495. We've got to deal

  496. with this.

  497. So Paul discerned

  498. it was urgent.

  499. Number four,

  500. Paul discerned

  501. that he must

  502. minimally

  503. but directly

  504. address it.

  505. He tells them,

  506. be of the same

  507. mind in the Lord.

  508. You are to reconcile

  509. with each other

  510. in such a way

  511. that you come

  512. into harmony

  513. with one another

  514. so you can again

  515. strive together

  516. and march together

  517. as he's been

  518. calling the church

  519. to do.

  520. You see,

  521. this conflict

  522. is preventing

  523. not only you

  524. but likely others

  525. within the church

  526. from doing the very thing

  527. Christ has made clear.

  528. Strive together.

  529. March on.

  530. Press on together.

  531. Don't be divided

  532. and distracted

  533. because that's what

  534. the enemy wants

  535. to do in the church.

  536. Humble yourselves

  537. as Christ

  538. humbled himself

  539. for you.

  540. Be of the same

  541. mind

  542. of Jesus Christ.

  543. It's most likely

  544. that wonderful

  545. glorious passage

  546. in Philippians 2

  547. where we saw

  548. Christ's great

  549. dissension

  550. and humility

  551. as a slave

  552. and then his

  553. ascension

  554. being exalted

  555. by God the Father

  556. for his obedience.

  557. That's the theological

  558. point of this letter

  559. with this conflict

  560. as being part

  561. of the occasion

  562. for which this letter

  563. needed to go back.

  564. Paul discerned

  565. he must address

  566. it directly.

  567. Number five,

  568. Paul discerned

  569. that this was

  570. also a case

  571. where a local

  572. in-person mediator

  573. would be helpful.

  574. Look at verse three.

  575. It says,

  576. I also urge you

  577. true companion.

  578. Maybe it's a reference

  579. that everyone

  580. would have understood

  581. to one of the

  582. local officers

  583. or something like that

  584. or possibly a Greek name.

  585. What it literally means

  586. is genuine

  587. yoke fellow

  588. which is great

  589. even if it's his

  590. actual name.

  591. I mean,

  592. what providence

  593. is yoked up

  594. with Paul

  595. pulling in the same

  596. direction

  597. and plowing this field

  598. that God has given

  599. them to cultivate.

  600. So I urge you

  601. to true companion

  602. help.

  603. Help these women

  604. who labored with me.

  605. Help them.

  606. The word help,

  607. it carries with it

  608. the meaning of

  609. bringing two things

  610. together.

  611. So help them

  612. by putting them

  613. back together.

  614. Sometimes in any

  615. relationship,

  616. especially the most

  617. intense relationships

  618. like marriage,

  619. they just need help.

  620. Need someone to help

  621. bring us back together

  622. with one another.

  623. One of the most

  624. clever titles

  625. for a book on marriage

  626. biblically is called

  627. When Sinners Say

  628. I Do.

  629. Isn't that exactly

  630. what's going on

  631. in marriage?

  632. Two saved sinners

  633. saying I do

  634. to one another.

  635. There's the already

  636. that we're in Christ

  637. but there's also

  638. plenty of not yet

  639. in both of our lives.

  640. One of the chapters

  641. is called

  642. The Fog of War.

  643. When it feels like

  644. in a relationship

  645. you're at war,

  646. picture 200 muskets

  647. firing the gunpowder

  648. on one side,

  649. the same from the other,

  650. and there's that

  651. black smoke.

  652. It's really hard

  653. to discern

  654. and see clearly

  655. what's our way

  656. forward here.

  657. It's foggy

  658. and it's really helpful

  659. to have an objective

  660. third party,

  661. someone else

  662. that can come in

  663. and ask

  664. and listen.

  665. Now,

  666. the fact that he

  667. has to tell them

  668. and not only tell them

  669. but tell the whole church

  670. and tell his fellow

  671. yokemen

  672. to help them,

  673. it can reveal

  674. something to us,

  675. doesn't it?

  676. They had not gotten

  677. help yet

  678. or if this person

  679. was in a position

  680. to help,

  681. the help had been

  682. rejected.

  683. We need an apostolic

  684. authority saying

  685. you need help

  686. and this man

  687. is going to have

  688. the authority

  689. to help you.

  690. Why is it that

  691. in our flesh

  692. we oftentimes

  693. don't want help?

  694. We don't want

  695. to be told

  696. that we were wrong.

  697. I don't want

  698. to have to sit there

  699. and have someone

  700. else tell me,

  701. Jason,

  702. here's the plank

  703. in your eye,

  704. brother.

  705. lovingly in the Lord.

  706. How about you

  707. let the Holy Spirit

  708. work on you,

  709. Jason,

  710. on that plank

  711. right now?

  712. That's humbling

  713. and once my pride

  714. has gotten attached

  715. and it's become

  716. public,

  717. my flesh

  718. is never going

  719. to choose that

  720. but God in his grace

  721. he calls us

  722. back to that

  723. and that's what

  724. a helper

  725. bringing two together

  726. is going to have

  727. to do,

  728. speak the truth

  729. and love

  730. to both sides.

  731. Most likely

  732. there's something

  733. each side

  734. must repent of

  735. to the Lord

  736. and there can be

  737. no peace

  738. with one another

  739. until that happens.

  740. Think about this

  741. when Jesus

  742. in John 5, 6

  743. he walked

  744. by

  745. and saw

  746. a crippled man

  747. lying there

  748. for a long time

  749. the Bible says

  750. adding that detail.

  751. Notice Jesus'

  752. words to that man.

  753. Do you

  754. want

  755. to be healed?

  756. Do you

  757. want

  758. to be healed?

  759. Jesus

  760. expected

  761. this man

  762. to give

  763. a verbal

  764. answer

  765. before he

  766. brought the

  767. healing power

  768. that only

  769. he could

  770. bring.

  771. So in

  772. conflict

  773. a mediator

  774. a local

  775. in-person

  776. helper

  777. sometimes

  778. will need

  779. to do that.

  780. Ask each side

  781. do you

  782. want

  783. help?

  784. Do you

  785. want

  786. to be

  787. healed?

  788. Or do you

  789. want to

  790. continue

  791. with this

  792. miserable

  793. conflict?

  794. Well number

  795. six

  796. Paul discerned

  797. it is

  798. wise

  799. to also

  800. publicly

  801. affirm

  802. both

  803. women.

  804. He tells

  805. the church

  806. outdo

  807. one another

  808. in showing

  809. honor to

  810. one another

  811. within the

  812. church.

  813. The church

  814. should be

  815. so generous

  816. in lavishing

  817. honor on

  818. all those

  819. who work

  820. out of love

  821. for Christ.

  822. Look at what

  823. he says

  824. in verse

  825. three.

  826. These

  827. women

  828. they labored

  829. with me

  830. in the

  831. gospel.

  832. They are

  833. my fellow

  834. workers.

  835. Remember

  836. how he

  837. called Epaphroditus

  838. his fellow

  839. worker?

  840. He's

  841. putting

  842. that same

  843. title of

  844. honor on

  845. both of

  846. these women

  847. publicly.

  848. Imploring to

  849. both of

  850. them publicly.

  851. Honoring both

  852. of them publicly.

  853. He's attaching

  854. his reputation

  855. to each one

  856. of them

  857. to try to

  858. help.

  859. He's trying

  860. to clear

  861. both names

  862. of any

  863. potential

  864. slander.

  865. Proverbs

  866. 10

  867. 18

  868. says

  869. whoever

  870. conceals

  871. hatred

  872. with lying

  873. lips and

  874. spreads

  875. slander

  876. is a

  877. fool.

  878. Paul

  879. is giving

  880. a fresh

  881. start

  882. so to

  883. speak.

  884. He's

  885. saying

  886. like

  887. Proverbs

  888. 18

  889. 17

  890. the one

  891. who

  892. states

  893. his

  894. case

  895. first

  896. seems

  897. right

  898. until

  899. the

  900. other

  901. one

  902. comes

  903. and

  904. examines

  905. him.

  906. Remember

  907. who you

  908. are

  909. in

  910. Christ.

  911. Ask

  912. for God

  913. to help

  914. you

  915. discern

  916. what's

  917. really

  918. going

  919. on.

  920. What

  921. are

  922. all

  923. the

  924. layers

  925. that

  926. need

  927. to

  928. be

  929. dealt

  930. with

  931. here.

  932. And

  933. let's

  934. humbly

  935. have

  936. the

  937. mind

  938. of

  939. Christ

  940. and

  941. be

  942. reconciled

  943. together.

  944. Well

  945. you might

  946. be wondering

  947. is this

  948. possible

  949. for God

  950. to help

  951. a church

  952. or help

  953. an individual

  954. or help

  955. me

  956. this much?

  957. And I

  958. encourage you

  959. to look

  960. at the

  961. promises

  962. of Scripture

  963. that God

  964. promises

  965. to give

  966. discernment

  967. and wisdom

  968. to those

  969. who belong

  970. to him.

  971. In Proverbs

  972. 10

  973. 18

  974. I apologize

  975. Proverbs

  976. 2

  977. 1

  978. through 6

  979. he says

  980. if you cry

  981. out for

  982. discernment

  983. and lift

  984. up your

  985. voice for

  986. understanding

  987. if you

  988. seek

  989. discernment

  990. as silver

  991. and search

  992. for her

  993. as for

  994. hidden

  995. treasures

  996. then you

  997. will

  998. understand

  999. the fear

  1000. of the

  1001. Lord

  1002. and you

  1003. will find

  1004. the knowledge

  1005. of God

  1006. for the

  1007. Lord

  1008. gives

  1009. wisdom.

  1010. So we

  1011. need to

  1012. follow this

  1013. example

  1014. and ask

  1015. God

  1016. for great

  1017. discernment

  1018. in the

  1019. midst of

  1020. conflict

  1021. among

  1022. Christians.

  1023. I love

  1024. what Paul

  1025. does next

  1026. in verses

  1027. 3

  1028. through 7

  1029. he

  1030. gospels

  1031. the church

  1032. through the

  1033. conflict.

  1034. He

  1035. gospels

  1036. them

  1037. through

  1038. conflict.

  1039. I think

  1040. everything

  1041. that follows

  1042. in the rest

  1043. of our

  1044. passage

  1045. verses 3

  1046. through 7

  1047. these are

  1048. safeguards

  1049. to protect

  1050. the local

  1051. church

  1052. from conflict.

  1053. I think

  1054. that's what

  1055. we read

  1056. here.

  1057. In verse

  1058. 3 he

  1059. says rejoice

  1060. brothers and

  1061. sisters

  1062. your names

  1063. are in

  1064. the book

  1065. of life.

  1066. Your names

  1067. are in

  1068. the book

  1069. of life.

  1070. You are

  1071. Christians.

  1072. Maybe you've

  1073. got a couple

  1074. of sons

  1075. and you

  1076. walk in

  1077. and they're

  1078. just wrestling

  1079. each other

  1080. throwing each

  1081. other

  1082. yelling at

  1083. each other

  1084. do you want

  1085. to just sit

  1086. them down

  1087. and say

  1088. you are

  1089. Christians

  1090. stop it.

  1091. Both of your

  1092. names are the

  1093. book of life.

  1094. Revelation 12

  1095. 10 says

  1096. now have

  1097. come the

  1098. salvation

  1099. and the

  1100. power and

  1101. the kingdom

  1102. of our

  1103. God and

  1104. the authority

  1105. of his

  1106. Messiah for

  1107. the accuser

  1108. of our

  1109. brothers and

  1110. sisters who

  1111. accuses them

  1112. before our

  1113. God day

  1114. and night

  1115. he has been

  1116. hurled down.

  1117. Your names

  1118. are in the

  1119. book of life.

  1120. The accuser

  1121. no longer

  1122. can blame

  1123. you one

  1124. another.

  1125. What's at

  1126. stake here

  1127. he's telling

  1128. them is this.

  1129. Does the

  1130. work of

  1131. Jesus

  1132. for you

  1133. make any

  1134. difference in

  1135. your relationships

  1136. with one

  1137. another?

  1138. That's what's

  1139. at stake

  1140. here.

  1141. Your names

  1142. are in

  1143. the book

  1144. of life.

  1145. Will the

  1146. reign of

  1147. Christ make

  1148. any difference

  1149. in the way

  1150. that you

  1151. live now

  1152. and treat

  1153. one another?

  1154. In verse

  1155. 4 he says

  1156. rejoice in

  1157. the Lord

  1158. always.

  1159. The quote

  1160. goes that it

  1161. takes 72

  1162. muscles to

  1163. frown but

  1164. only 13

  1165. to smile.

  1166. Aren't you

  1167. tired of

  1168. wearing yourself

  1169. out over

  1170. this conflict?

  1171. Rejoice in

  1172. the Lord.

  1173. It's hard to

  1174. be in

  1175. conflict when

  1176. you're always

  1177. rejoicing in

  1178. the Lord.

  1179. But these

  1180. emotions are

  1181. hard to

  1182. shake.

  1183. I think

  1184. they're

  1185. actually

  1186. impossible to

  1187. just say I'm

  1188. going to not

  1189. think about

  1190. these bad

  1191. emotions toward

  1192. this person

  1193. for a while.

  1194. How do we

  1195. replace this

  1196. negative emotion

  1197. with something

  1198. positive like

  1199. joy?

  1200. It's only

  1201. with the

  1202. presence,

  1203. the indwelling

  1204. life of

  1205. Christ himself

  1206. moving into

  1207. the believer

  1208. once again

  1209. filling your

  1210. mind,

  1211. filling your

  1212. heart.

  1213. He fills

  1214. you with

  1215. his joy.

  1216. He says

  1217. rejoice in

  1218. the Lord

  1219. always.

  1220. I will say

  1221. it again

  1222. rejoice.

  1223. Verse 5,

  1224. I think verse

  1225. 5 is in the

  1226. context of the

  1227. conflict.

  1228. Let your

  1229. gentleness be

  1230. known to

  1231. all.

  1232. Let your

  1233. gentleness be

  1234. evident to

  1235. all who are

  1236. watching in

  1237. the church and

  1238. outside of the

  1239. church.

  1240. It's hard to

  1241. fight against

  1242. someone who's

  1243. as gentle and

  1244. docile as a

  1245. lamb, isn't

  1246. it?

  1247. Proverbs 15

  1248. 1 says a

  1249. harsh word

  1250. stirs up

  1251. anger but a

  1252. soft answer

  1253. turns away

  1254. wrath.

  1255. And he

  1256. tells them in

  1257. verse 5,

  1258. the Lord is

  1259. at hand.

  1260. Rejoice in

  1261. the Lord.

  1262. Let his

  1263. mind be in

  1264. you.

  1265. Let his

  1266. joy fill

  1267. your heart

  1268. and push

  1269. out those

  1270. bad emotions

  1271. toward other

  1272. Christians.

  1273. The Lord

  1274. is near.

  1275. The Lord

  1276. is at

  1277. hand.

  1278. I was a

  1279. little surprised

  1280. to find out

  1281. what does that

  1282. mean, that

  1283. phrase, is

  1284. at hand.

  1285. I learned

  1286. that the

  1287. rabbis use

  1288. this term

  1289. to make

  1290. nigh or

  1291. to say

  1292. something is

  1293. being made

  1294. near.

  1295. They use

  1296. that to

  1297. describe making

  1298. a convert

  1299. or making

  1300. a disciple.

  1301. So how

  1302. do we

  1303. put that

  1304. together?

  1305. So Paul

  1306. is telling

  1307. this church

  1308. and these

  1309. individuals in

  1310. conflict, the

  1311. Lord is

  1312. near.

  1313. And it's

  1314. also a

  1315. phrase saying

  1316. the Lord

  1317. is discipling.

  1318. The Lord

  1319. is handling

  1320. you.

  1321. The Lord

  1322. is the

  1323. one overseeing

  1324. this

  1325. relationship.

  1326. Your names

  1327. are written

  1328. in the

  1329. book of

  1330. life.

  1331. Rejoice

  1332. together in

  1333. this, this

  1334. great thing.

  1335. Jesus

  1336. said in

  1337. Matthew

  1338. 18, 20,

  1339. where two

  1340. or three

  1341. are gathered

  1342. in my

  1343. name, there

  1344. I am

  1345. with them.

  1346. And you

  1347. know Matthew

  1348. 18, the

  1349. context is

  1350. in resolving

  1351. conflict.

  1352. So the

  1353. context of

  1354. this great

  1355. promise that

  1356. where two

  1357. or three

  1358. are gathered

  1359. in the

  1360. name of

  1361. Jesus, he

  1362. is near, he

  1363. is handling, he

  1364. is ministering,

  1365. he is working

  1366. out what only

  1367. he can do

  1368. among you.

  1369. Christ's

  1370. presence brings

  1371. refreshing, it

  1372. brings peace,

  1373. joy, comfort,

  1374. it's ice

  1375. melting warmth

  1376. when Jesus

  1377. is near his

  1378. people.

  1379. Why is

  1380. that?

  1381. It's because

  1382. of who Jesus

  1383. is.

  1384. First Peter

  1385. 2 tells us

  1386. in verses 22

  1387. and 23, it's

  1388. because Jesus

  1389. Christ committed

  1390. no sin, nor

  1391. was deceit,

  1392. found in his

  1393. mouth, the

  1394. opposite of

  1395. Satan.

  1396. And when he

  1397. was reviled, he

  1398. did not revile

  1399. and return.

  1400. When he

  1401. suffered, he

  1402. did not

  1403. threaten, but

  1404. he committed

  1405. himself to

  1406. him who

  1407. judges

  1408. righteously.

  1409. In our own

  1410. flesh, we will

  1411. never want to

  1412. do that, but

  1413. if Jesus is

  1414. handling you,

  1415. discipling you,

  1416. he is near

  1417. you, he

  1418. will help you

  1419. do that.

  1420. His joy will

  1421. replace that

  1422. anger.

  1423. So we

  1424. gospel ourselves

  1425. through conflict.

  1426. Christ is here

  1427. ministering.

  1428. Number four is

  1429. we pray through

  1430. conflict with

  1431. thanksgiving.

  1432. He says,

  1433. pray with

  1434. thanksgiving.

  1435. Be anxious for

  1436. nothing, but in

  1437. everything by prayer

  1438. and supplication

  1439. with thanksgiving.

  1440. Paul is saying

  1441. to the church,

  1442. when you're

  1443. really in

  1444. conflict, what's

  1445. going on is a

  1446. spiritual battle,

  1447. but you can

  1448. stand firm.

  1449. Christ has

  1450. already conquered

  1451. conflict.

  1452. You can rejoice.

  1453. He is with you,

  1454. his people.

  1455. In Christ, you

  1456. are strong, you

  1457. are victorious.

  1458. You can stand

  1459. firm in Christ

  1460. together.

  1461. And when you

  1462. have that confidence

  1463. in Christ, you

  1464. will have to be

  1465. anxious for

  1466. nothing.

  1467. But in

  1468. everything by

  1469. prayer and

  1470. supplication, with

  1471. thanksgiving, make

  1472. your requests

  1473. known.

  1474. Isn't it true that

  1475. when there is

  1476. tension in a

  1477. relationship or

  1478. conflict, it's

  1479. hard to pray about

  1480. anything else until

  1481. I feel like that's

  1482. resolved?

  1483. And so, when

  1484. you're in conflict

  1485. and you're praying

  1486. and bringing your

  1487. requests to the

  1488. Lord, you're

  1489. praying for him to

  1490. help you.

  1491. Help me resolve

  1492. this to the best

  1493. of my ability to

  1494. be at peace with

  1495. all men.

  1496. Help me, Lord,

  1497. on my part.

  1498. And it's really

  1499. hard when it's

  1500. conflict with

  1501. someone that you

  1502. care about.

  1503. The more deeply you

  1504. care about them, the

  1505. harder it is.

  1506. But it's also

  1507. impossible to

  1508. remain angry or

  1509. mad at someone when

  1510. you're praying for

  1511. them.

  1512. You're praying for

  1513. God's will to be

  1514. done in their life

  1515. as in yours.

  1516. He says to pray

  1517. with thanksgiving.

  1518. It's not, Lord,

  1519. make my brother

  1520. repent.

  1521. Teach him the

  1522. lesson the hard

  1523. way.

  1524. You need to teach

  1525. him because I've

  1526. tried.

  1527. That's not it.

  1528. It's to pray with

  1529. thanksgiving.

  1530. In Matthew 7, 4, and

1531. 5, you can say to

  1532. your brother, let me

1533. take a speck out of

  1534. your eye when there's

1535. a log in your own.

1536. Jesus says if you do

  1537. that, you're a

  1538. hypocrite.

1539. He says first take the

1540. log out of your own

  1541. eye.

  1542. What happens when God

1543. takes a log out of my

  1544. own eye?

  1545. I'm so thankful.

  1546. I feel horrible.

  1547. I had this massive

  1548. blind spot.

  1549. God forgave me.

  1550. He gospeled me

  1551. through it once more.

  1552. His righteousness

  1553. covers all my flaws.

  1554. And that's the way

  1555. that we minister

  1556. Christ to one

  1557. another.

  1558. 1 John 5, 4.

  1559. Everyone who has

  1560. been born of God

  1561. overcomes the

  1562. world.

  1563. Rejoice.

  1564. Give God thanks

  1565. that the enemy

  1566. will not win.

  1567. He will not prevail.

  1568. He will not bring

  1569. division and

  1570. destruction between

  1571. brothers and sisters

  1572. or between a church.

  1573. Christ has overcome

  1574. the world by the

  1575. power of his work

  1576. and his life.

  1577. We're told in

  1578. Ephesians 6, 17,

  1579. take the helmet of

  1580. your salvation.

  1581. Rejoice that you're

  1582. saved, brothers and

  1583. sisters, and take the

  1584. sword of the Spirit,

1585. which is the word of

  1586. God, praying always

  1587. with all prayer and

  1588. all supplication in the

  1589. Spirit.

  1590. It's battle when we

  1591. pray over conflict,

  1592. when we remind

  1593. ourselves we are

  1594. saved by God's grace

  1595. alone, and we're

  1596. battling the enemy,

  1597. but the enemy will

  1598. not win here.

  1599. He will not cause

  1600. this division.

  1601. Pray through conflict

  1602. with thanksgiving.

  1603. And the fifth heading,

1604. the last one for today,

  1605. is trust in God's

  1606. promises with each

  1607. next step.

1608. In verse 7, he says

  1609. this wonderful promise

1610. that the peace of God,

  1611. which surpasses all

  1612. understanding, it will

  1613. guard your heart and

  1614. your mind through Christ

  1615. Jesus.

  1616. The peace of God.

  1617. Relational shalom.

  1618. To be reconciled with

  1619. God and with our

  1620. neighbor, that's the

  1621. peace of God.

1622. There can be no peace

  1623. with a brother or

  1624. sister until there is

  1625. peace with God.

  1626. God.

1627. In Romans 5.1, we read

  1628. that we have been

  1629. justified by faith, and

1630. we have peace with God

  1631. through our Lord Jesus

  1632. Christ.

  1633. Jesus gives this

  1634. wonderful promise in

  1635. Matthew 5.9,

  1636. Blessed are the

  1637. peacemakers, for they

1638. shall be called sons of

  1639. God.

1640. A child of God does the

  1641. work of the Father.

  1642. A child of God sees a

  1643. conflict between brothers

1644. if they're called in to

1645. help, and they can be

  1646. be a peacemaker.

  1647. Remembering that there's

1648. no peace among man with

  1649. one another until there's

1650. peace with God the Father

  1651. through Jesus Christ.

1652. It's to be an evangelist.

  1653. It's to be a peacemaker.

  1654. And to reconcile conflict

1655. among Christians is to be

1656. one who gospels brothers and

1657. sisters in the truth of who

1658. they already are in Jesus

  1659. Christ.

1660. And the peace of God which

  1661. surpasses all understanding.

1662. It's greater than your flesh.

1663. It's the spiritual reality of

  1664. your soul.

1665. It's the mystery that you

  1666. can't explain, but anyone

1667. looking at your life or this

1668. situation, they can't deny it.

  1669. It's a powerful work that

  1670. passes all understanding.

1671. This work that Christ does in

  1672. his people.

1673. Well, you can likely look at

1674. your family member or your own

1675. life by God's grace and you can

1676. see the Holy Spirit has been so

  1677. patient with me.

1678. If I compare my life now

  1679. compared to 10 years ago, I

1680. would never on my own be who I

  1681. am now.

  1682. I am so different.

1683. I'm more gentle, not all the way

1684. gentle that I want to be.

  1685. I'm more humble.

1686. And if someone would have

1687. treated me the way that I was

1688. treated just now 10 years ago,

1689. they probably would have had to

1690. call the cops, you know.

1691. God's been working on me.

  1692. That passes all understanding.

1693. It must be that the reality of

1694. the gospel of Jesus Christ in me

1695. is eclipsing my flesh a little

  1696. bit more.

1697. All glory be to God.

1698. The peace of God, we're told this

1699. wonderful promise, it will guard

1700. your hearts and minds through

  1701. Christ Jesus.

1702. Satan wants to deceive our hearts,

1703. to stir up anger, resentment,

1704. bitterness, keeping a list of

  1705. wrongs against me.

1706. But God is the God of peace.

  1707. Christ in me.

1708. He fills me so much that there's

  1709. no room.

1710. God is the one guarding our hearts

  1711. through Jesus Christ.

1712. He dwells in our hearts.

1713. Satan can't bring hatred into my

1714. heart if Christ is filling it.

  1715. Christ is living there.

1716. That's what it means to be

1717. perfectly safeguarded in the heart

  1718. by Christ Jesus.

1719. The powers of darkness, they want to

1720. tempt me, to dwell on my bad

1721. thoughts in my mind, to scheme evil,

1722. to act manipulatively, to protect my

  1723. own pride.

1724. But God, by his grace, his Holy Spirit,

1725. he keeps lifting my thoughts to God,

1726. to new heights of God's spirit.

1727. He's reminding me over and over how

1728. much God has saved me from.

1729. That's what it means to be perfectly

1730. safeguarded in your mind through

  1731. Jesus Christ.

1732. When we think of Christ's love for

1733. his church, for our brothers and

1734. sisters, how much Christ loves that

1735. person, his faithfulness to each one

1736. of us, and how much God is

1737. sanctifying them just like he

1738. sanctified me, then there's really no

1739. room left in my thoughts against a

1740. brother or a sister with God's help.

1741. He fills our minds with more of

  1742. Christ.

1743. And the peace of God truly passes all

  1744. understanding.

1745. See, man can be pretty clever.

1746. Man can tickle the ear of the flesh.

1747. But there's no wisdom like the wisdom

  1748. of the gospel.

1749. And there's no power like the power of

1750. the blood of Jesus Christ.

1751. When believers are brought around the

1752. foot of the cross once again,

1753. and he just takes us one by one,

1754. 360, looking up at the person and

1755. work of Jesus and our need for him.

  1756. There's no greater wisdom.

1757. There's no greater power than the

1758. blood of Jesus Christ for his people.

1759. My prayer for us is that God will use this

1760. very pointed text to the church in

1761. Philippi to hedge us off to shelter,

1762. to protect, to put up a tower and a

1763. wall to prevent any further division or

1764. conflict that the enemy will try to

1765. bring in on this little body.

1766. And also that he will spur us on to deal

  1767. with it.

1768. If there is something that needs to be

1769. dealt with, that we can do it in a

  1770. biblical way.

1771. Reminding one another of how much Christ

  1772. loves each other.

1773. Confessing any sin in my own life to

  1774. make it right.

1775. Let me own my part of it and confess that

1776. humbly before you and before the Lord.

1777. And we can strive together that the mind

1778. of Christ will work out in his people

1779. because Christ has already conquered all

  1780. conflict among Christians.

1781. Let's pray that he'll do that for us.

1782. Father, thank you for your word.

1783. Thank you for your power, for your Holy

1784. Spirit that's at work among your people.

1785. Lord, we pray that you will protect us and

1786. we thank you that you have conquered the

1787. conflict among brothers and sisters.

1788. But it still needs to be worked out.

1789. I pray that you will work it out among

1790. us and that you'll also protect us, Lord.

1791. As conflict does come up, we'll understand

1792. this is part of life in the flesh in this

1793. world and that we can take steps to let

1794. you conquer it once again so that you'll

1795. be glorified in your church.

1796. We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ,

  1797. our Lord.

  1798. Amen.
