  1. I'll read our sermon text for us today.

  2. Believing what God says about his own word.

  3. In 1 Timothy, that the word of God is spirit-breathed.

  4. In Hebrews 4, we're told that the word of God is living,

  5. it's powerful, it's piercing.

  6. Hebrews 6 tells us that the word of God

  7. is the sword of the spirit.

  8. If you receive God's word as he says it is,

  9. then at the end I'll say this is the word of God.

  10. You can respond, thanks be to God.

  11. Our passage for today is Philippians chapter 4, 10 through 13.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  12. Philippians chapter 4, 10 through 13.

    Philippians 4 chapter mention

  13. But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly,

  14. that now at last your care for me has flourished again.

  15. Though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity.

  16. Not that I speak in regard to need,

  17. for I have learned in whatever state I am to be content.

  18. I know how to be abased.

  19. And I know how to abound.

  20. Everywhere and in all things,

  21. I have learned both to be full and to be hungry,

  22. both to abound and to suffer need.

  23. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

  24. This is the word of God for the people of God.

  25. Thanks be to God.

  26. You may be seated.

  27. Isaiah 40 reminds us that the grass withers,

  28. the flower fades,

  29. but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  30. In Luke 1, the angel Gabriel,

  31. he pronounces that no word from God

  32. shall be void of power.

  33. May it be so for his glory.

  34. Let's pray.

  35. Lord, I ask that your Holy Spirit will shine the light of your glory

  36. onto your people through your word.

  37. I pray that as the preacher today,

  38. I won't get in the way.

  39. I pray that you will help me.

  40. And I pray, Lord, that you'll protect me,

  41. that the enemy won't accuse me of my own lack of contentment,

  42. the weakness of my own vessel,

  43. how much I still have to learn.

  44. But Lord, I pray that this testimony that Paul has given

  45. by the inspiration of the Spirit

  46. will be an encouragement

  47. to each one that you have brought here by your providence,

  48. that we will not leave this place the same,

  49. that you will change us,

  50. transform us more and more to be like Jesus Christ,

  51. our Redeemer and our Lord.

  52. For your glory and for our good we ask.

  53. Amen.

  54. Amen.

  55. Amen.

  56. Amen.

  57. Amen.

  58. Amen.

  59. Amen.

  60. Amen.

  61. Contentment has many benefits that health professionals have observed.

  62. Reduced stress, lowered anxiety, enhanced gratitude,

  63. improved relationships.

  64. emotions like envy resentment and an outlook like pessimism are replaced by satisfaction

  65. peace and an optimistic outlook on life yet most people the vast majority of people are not content

  66. over 400 years ago a saved sinner a pastor named jeremiah burroughs gave this illustration that

  67. to me just put me right there you know the northern part of england those those grassy hills

  68. as they go into scotland he said you picture a child or a group of children they're on one hill

  69. and they look over to the next hill and they see a cloud hovering right above it and they think if

  70. we can just run to the top of that hill we'll be in the clouds we'll be able to touch the clouds

  71. so they go and as soon as they climb up to the top of the next hill the clouds are just as far away

  72. as they were on the previous hill for this reason he described christian contentment even among

  73. believers as a rare jewel we should all be seeking it when we find it it is so precious christian

  74. contentment the reason it's so rare is because contentment is an art that requires careful study

  75. and ongoing practice throughout a lifetime it wasn't until his very final years that the apostle paul

  76. as his cup is being poured out the last grains of sand falling through the hourglass

  77. he says in verse 11 of the passage we just read i have learned in whatever state i am to be content

  78. what a testimony paul's writing to a greek audience likely many roman retired soldiers who have had

  79. this classical greco-roman education and paul is very quick to clarify he's not talking about

  80. some stoic detachment which would be similar to what we have today with like a buddhist emptying of

  81. yourself paul says this contentment that i have learned it's not by my own strength at all but it's

  82. through christ who strengthens me so beloved congregation of our lord jesus christ

  83. my objective today is to show you six encouraging truths from paul's testimony in these three verses

  84. three or four verses of why you and i can be content why you and i can be content number one

  85. when you and i are weak christ shows his care for you through his church when you and i are weak

  86. that's when we're most prone to discouragement isn't it and and to not be content we're so weak

  87. everything's messed up my soul's stirring and in those moments he shows us his care through fellow

  88. believers in big and small ways i bet you could think back on the last month or maybe even today

  89. how the lord has brought you strength through a fellow believer

  90. if roman prisoners didn't get outside care they would go without food without a blanket even

  91. and certainly without company hungry cold lonely vulnerable to the enemy's attacks

  92. hardest circumstances to learn contentment

  93. yet in verse 10 paul says i rejoiced in the lord greatly the lord was with him all the time

  94. and now when this encouragement arrived he's rejoicing in the lord the lord's right there with him all

  95. along that now at last it's been a while like this at last your care for me has flourished again

  96. that phrase to flourish again it's an agricultural term it's used to describe a plant that's sprouting

  97. or being renewed again so the buds are showing up that's a sign that there's fruit and life inside this

  98. plant and that's how paul describes the care of the philippian church what great encouragement to him

  99. now you notice he's not he's not excited about the financial gift

  100. he's rejoicing in the lord about their care their relationship their love

  101. paul does not treasure their money he treasures them

  102. if you take your eyes down to verse 19

  103. paul says my god encouraging them now in return my god shall supply all your need

  104. according to his riches in glory by christ jesus see the point that he wants to make regarding their

  105. financial gift is that it comes from god it's my god who shall supply all of your needs and all of my

  106. needs from his abounding riches through christ

  107. jeremiah burroughs pointed out that christian friends are to you and me but a conduit like a pipe

  108. that's going to carry water to me

  109. god uses christian friends to convey his goodness and his gifts to his people

  110. our friends conveyed the gifts of god to us because it's god who first loved us we love because he first

  111. loved us and gave himself god the son for us

  112. in john chapter 13 verse 35 this is the love flowing from god through his church jesus says

    John 13:35

  113. this way the world will know you are my disciples by your love for one another

  114. the world will know you belong to me because my love from god whose supplies are endless

  115. flow through my people to one another

  116. so christian when you receive even a small gift from one of god's people

  117. you're receiving a gift from god the creator of all

  118. the christian can truly enjoy even the smallest little gift

  119. as burroughs put it because that's like a token on this earth and this life of the love of god for me

  120. picture a couple of little kids even from among our congregation and one spends several hours making a

  121. a little string bracelet for the other and then that friend receives this little bracelet and they're going to wear it for

  122. weeks not because it's expensive but they treat it as if it's pure gold it's because of who it's from it's from their friend

  123. so when christians are sharing in this gift giving and this love one to another it's a token from god himself we ought to receive it and cherish it that way

  124. when we are weak and i know many of us are weak i'm weak these days too

  125. but when we are weak christ uses the care of his church to strengthen his people so receive the care from one another as god's love for you

  126. and continue being generous and showing that kind of care one for another

  127. number two when you can't see the care of others christ is your strength still

  128. when you can't see the care of christ through his people which is all the more good reason to feel discontent isn't it

  129. christ is your strength still

  130. well you notice in verse 10 how paul says now at last your care for me has flourished again

  131. though you surely did care but you lacked opportunity

  132. paul is sitting there in prison in rome not seeing this gift that's traveling slowly for months from

  133. philippi to reach him he can't see it god knows it's it's in root he knows the philippians have not

  134. forgotten him he knows that they're praying for paul paul can't see it right now

  135. there's a time when it feels maybe like it's dry i'm not i'm not being fed by god i'm not being fed by

  136. god's people what do i do where do i turn

  137. paul's testimony here is that he rejoiced in christ christ was his strength still christ has proved that

  138. when he's in abundance with friends christ is with them when he can't see the love of god through the

  139. people of god christ is his strength still and in those times when it feels like we're not receiving

  140. the love from fellow christians that we expect or hoped for and it's right that we would feel that way

  141. that we turn to the source himself jeremiah has pointed out jeremiah burroughs pointed out you are

  142. thirsty and needy because it feels to you like that pipe has been cut off and god says to me come to

  143. the fountain and drink immediately if you'll notice in verse 15 philippians 4 15 paul tells this church

  144. in philippi that they were the only ones who had given him any support he received the gift from you

  145. only we know paul is calling out the sins of the church in rome that are seeking vain glory

  146. and yet he says christ is my strength paul was forgotten by these other churches that he had

  147. planted now being neglected by those same people paul did not see the care of others but he still thought

  148. the best of them look at verse 10 again paul says surely you did care the lord taught him to think the

  149. best of the church in philippi they just lacked opportunity christ was his strength even then

  150. if you're feeling forgotten or abandoned maybe you feel like you have no friend by your side

  151. you can learn this kind of strength from christ himself because christ was abandoned no friend by his

  152. side forgotten by those he had discipled and this is why there's no one besides christ himself who can

  153. teach a christian like paul this kind of strength and christ can teach this to you and me as well

  154. the lord jesus had to hold on to this promise in god's word in psalm 22 that god the father

  155. does not despise the affliction of his son nor does he hide his face from him when jesus cried out

  156. even from the cross all alone psalm 22 verse 24 says the father heard him the father was near the son

    Psalms 22:24

  157. and christ learned even that level of obedience and humiliation because you and i can't come up with

  158. that on our own he has to be our strength his active obedience had to secure that strength for us so he

  159. can now teach us that when you don't feel the care of others god is your strength still he hears your cry

  160. and he wants you to trust him trust his timing he will provide

  161. number three when your needs are great christ himself comes close to train you in this art of

  162. contentment it is when your needs are great that christ himself comes near to train you in the art of

  163. contentment in verse 11 paul says not that i speak in regard to need for i have learned in whatever state i am

  164. to be content he says i have learned

  165. this term refers to being initiated

  166. maybe you've started a new job or a new position and you get a you get to learn the ropes you go to a

  167. new school you need to be initiated into how to survive and how to get by here paul says i've been

  168. initiated by christ himself in the school of contentment in order to learn how to swim you're going to have to

  169. get wet in order to learn contentment we're going to have to feel severe need

  170. to be content it means to be sufficiently supplied

  171. sufficiently supplied jeremiah burroughs defined contentment for christians this way that sweet

  172. inward quiet gracious frame of spirit that joyfully submits to god you trust god's wise fatherly provision for you

  173. in every condition another person said that contentment is when your soul is even with your circumstances

  174. christian life is even with your soul is even with your soul is even with your soul is even with your soul

  175. in the school of contentment

  176. luke 9 58 tells us that christ

  177. as the people expected him to be this conquering

  178. military figure he reminded them that foxes have holes

  179. and birds of the air have nests but the son of man

  180. has nowhere to lay his head

  181. and when jesus was tempted by satan

  182. In Matthew 4, 4, he quoted scripture back to Satan.

  183. He said, man does not live by bread alone,

  184. but from every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.

  185. God is the supply.

  186. God is the one who is all sufficient.

  187. It's from the fullness of God that Christ in the flesh knew contentment.

  188. John 1, 16 reminds us that from his fullness,

  189. the fullness of Jesus Christ, we have received grace upon grace.

  190. We just sang this wonderful song that suffering, anguish,

  191. despised and rejected, bearing our sins, my redeemer is he.

  192. Hands that healed nations stretched out on a tree,

  193. and took the nails for me.

  194. Christ secured the contentment by living a life of love for God

  195. and love for man that we need.

  196. We can't have contentment unless we are united to him,

  197. fully satisfied in love with God,

  198. which settles our soul, and it turns into that love,

  199. self-sacrificing, generous love toward our neighbors.

  200. When we are in great need,

  201. Christ himself comes close because he's the only one who can,

  202. and he trains you in this wonderful upside-down art of contentment in this world.

  203. He does that when we're most in need.

  204. You think of a person making an instrument out of metal.

  205. In order to shape this instrument into something useful,

  206. what do you have to do to this piece of metal first?

  207. You have to heat it up, get it really hot in the furnace,

  208. and then pound it.

  209. Pound it into its shape.

  210. The Lord Jesus became that.

  211. He put himself in the hottest furnace,

  212. and he let the Father shape him for us

  213. so that he could turn around and graciously train us

  214. and initiate us into being content,

  215. into living in his fullness.

  216. Number four, when Christ is your strength,

  217. you learn contentment from being brought low.

  218. When Christ is your strength,

  219. you learn contentment from being brought low.

  220. In verse 12, Paul gives this testimony.

  221. I know how to be abased.

  222. Brought down, made low.

  223. It refers to loss of reputation,

  224. rights, standing, or security.

  225. And in Paul's case, all of the above.

  226. Paul was an elite intellectual,

  227. now a fool.

  228. He was a born citizen,

  229. now a death row criminal.

  230. He was popular, now forgotten.

  231. Powerful, now he's weak.

  232. You learn from Christ

  233. how to be satisfied in God

  234. even when you are abased.

  235. Some of you have suffered such pain.

  236. Some of you are facing the biggest reasons in life

  237. to feel anxious.

  238. The world says,

  239. see, here's proof that God doesn't love you.

  240. For some of you on the other side of that,

  241. you're bearing testimony like Paul.

  242. I've been abased.

  243. And I can tell you,

  244. God is love still.

  245. And this is a mystery.

  246. It's definitely a mystery to the world

  247. and it's a mystery to Christians.

  248. But this is the faithfulness of God to his people.

  249. Christ has taught you the answer to this great mystery.

  250. The Spirit has shown the great love of God

  251. for you in Christ.

  252. And you can say now with Paul in 2 Corinthians 6.10,

  253. having nothing,

  254. yet possessing everything.

  255. Because God teaches you contentment

  256. when you bring those cares,

  257. those concerns,

  258. those fears,

  259. that pain to him

  260. over and over again.

  261. You open up your heart

  262. and you set it before God

  263. once again.

  264. When we're abased,

  265. we have to do that.

  266. There's nowhere else to go.

  267. When Paul was abased,

  268. he prayed,

  269. opened up his heart,

  270. brought it before God.

  271. And listen to the response from the Lord

  272. in 2 Corinthians 12.9 and 10.

  273. Jesus Christ said to Paul,

  274. My grace is sufficient for you,

  275. for my power is made perfect in weakness.

  276. And Paul now tells the church,

  277. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly

  278. of my weakness,

  279. of my abasement,

  280. so that the power of Christ

  281. may rest upon me.

  282. For the sake of Christ, then,

  283. I am content with weakness,

  284. insults, hardships,

  285. persecutions, and calamities.

  286. For when I am weak on my own,

  287. then I am strong in Christ.

  288. Think about what a gift this is

  289. for believers on this earth.

  290. Think of what we would be without Christ

  291. in these hardest of times.

  292. When a proud, unrepentant sinner

  293. suffers a little bit in this life,

  294. we need to view that

  295. in the light of eternity.

  296. That's really a small tasting

  297. of the eternal judgment

  298. a proud, unrepentant sinner

  299. will face for all eternity in hell.

  300. But when we as Christians suffer

  301. in this life,

  302. we view ourselves in the light

  303. of the Holy God.

  304. Instead of asking,

  305. why do I have to bear this cross?

  306. Christ graciously teaches us,

  307. why isn't my cross as great

  308. as I deserve it to be?

  309. Christ is the only source

  310. of such strength.

  311. Jesus fulfilled Isaiah 50, verse 6,

    Isaiah 50:6

  312. when he gave his back

  313. to those who struck him

  314. and his cheeks

  315. to those who plucked out his beard.

  316. Jesus was mocked and jeered,

  317. ridiculed and spat upon.

  318. He was taunted and tempted.

  319. He was abased.

  320. But Jesus never sinned against God,

  321. even in that humiliation.

  322. Jesus had his gaze set firmly,

  323. like Flint on the mission

  324. his father gave him to do.

  325. Jeremiah Burroughs said that

  326. one drop of the sweetness of heaven

  327. is enough to take away

  328. all the bitterness

  329. of the afflictions of this world.

  330. And Jesus knew the sweetness of heaven,

  331. not just for himself,

  332. but for those he was dying to save.

  333. And that sweetness

  334. made all of the torments of the cross

  335. a joy for him to bear

  336. so that you could enjoy

  337. the sweetness of heaven with him.

  338. Jesus Christ knew no sin

  339. because he was the most content,

  340. soul that has ever walked this earth.

  341. Burroughs again said that temptations

  342. can't enter into a content heart.

  343. It would be like a wasp,

  344. tiny little wasp trying to fly into

  345. and penetrate a massive boulder.

  346. When your heart is content in Christ,

  347. temptations have no place to get in.

  348. So when Christ is your strength,

  349. you learn contentment

  350. even from being brought low.

  351. And you pray,

  352. Lord, may I know how to be abased

  353. like Jesus,

  354. like Paul,

  355. trusting in your promises

  356. and your word.

  357. Luke 14, 11,

  358. that he who humbles himself

  359. will be exalted.

  360. I know this is true

  361. because Christ humbled himself

  362. and the Father has highly exalted him.

  363. Number five,

  364. when your soul knows Christ,

  365. you are more content in him

  366. than in worldly abundance.

  367. When your soul knows Christ,

  368. you and I are more content in him

  369. than in worldly abundance.

  370. Abundance, kids,

  371. it means when you have more

  372. than what you need.

  373. But you're not content in those things,

  374. you're more content in Christ himself.

  375. Look at verse 12.

  376. Paul says,

  377. I also know how to abound.

  378. Everywhere and in all things

  379. I have learned both to be full

  380. and to be hungry,

  381. both to abound

  382. and to suffer need.

  383. When we are suffering,

  384. when we are abased,

  385. when we're humiliated,

  386. it almost always drives us to Christ.

  387. But when we are in abundance,

  388. we can easily fall into

  389. a spiritual slumber.

  390. We let down our guard.

  391. We're even more prone to temptations,

  392. finding their way into our hearts.

  393. So abundance may be

  394. a higher level of a course

  395. you've got to learn from Christ,

  396. even than a basement itself.

  397. Paul learned how to abound from Christ.

  398. Think about how Christ secured

  399. that ability to be content in abundance.

  400. Think of how Christ

  401. left the abundance of heaven

  402. as eternal God the Son.

  403. He joyfully obeyed his Father's will

  404. so that he could merit

  405. on our behalf.

  406. He lacks nothing,

  407. but we need to know this,

  408. how to be content in abundance

  409. and not be attached to those things.

  410. As an old verse put it,

  411. a wise content

  412. his even soul secured

  413. by want not shaken,

  414. nor by wealth allured.

  415. Christ was not attached

  416. to his heavenly glory,

  417. the manifestation of his essence.

  418. He joyfully stripped himself

  419. of every comfort,

  420. every honor,

  421. every privilege

  422. to become a slave,

  423. Philippians 2,

  424. and to die a shameful death

  425. for you and me.

  426. So he's the one

  427. who can train us

  428. on how to abound

  429. and not attach our soul

  430. to these gifts.

  431. when a lover of this world

  432. has some abundance

  433. in this life,

  434. that's all they have,

  435. and they live in constant paranoia

  436. of losing what they have.

  437. But when a Christian

  438. has even a small thing

  439. in this life,

  440. it is a deposit

  441. of the full reward,

  442. the great treasure

  443. that Christ has secured

  444. and has stored up for them

  445. in heaven.

  446. When your soul knows Christ,

  447. you are more content

  448. in him

  449. than in worldly abundance.

  450. Well, the sixth encouraging truth

  451. from Paul's testimony,

  452. the last one for today,

  453. is that when Christ dwells in you,

  454. he is the strength

  455. that holds your soul contained.

  456. When Christ dwells in you,

  457. he is the strength

  458. that holds your soul contained.

  459. In verse 13,

  460. Paul says,

  461. I can do all things

  462. through Christ

  463. who strengthens me.

  464. Literally,

  465. this very famous quote

  466. is this,

  467. in all,

  468. I am being made strong

  469. in the one empowering me,

  470. Christ.

  471. In other words,

  472. Paul is saying,

  473. in all,

  474. in all,

  475. in all that God will have me endure

  476. in this broken world,

  477. I am being made strong

  478. in the one empowering me,

  479. Christ.

  480. Being made strong.

  481. Paul says,

  482. I am being made able,

  483. becoming more powerful

  484. to prevail,

  485. being made able

  486. to overcome

  487. all.

  488. The word content,

  489. which is the theme

  490. of this passage,

  491. content means held

  492. or contained

  493. within the limits.

  494. You think of the contents

  495. of a can

  496. or something like that.

  497. That's what it means,

  498. to be content.

  499. Your longings

  500. of your soul

  501. are contained

  502. within the bounds

  503. God designed.

  504. What is the strength

  505. that holds

  506. those desires

  507. of your soul

  508. contained?

  509. It has to be Christ.

  510. His strength

  511. holding your soul

  512. in its proper place.

  513. When Christ

  514. dwells in you,

  515. he's at the very

  516. center of your being,

  517. the very core

  518. of your essence.

  519. It's Christ inside you

  520. like this powerful

  521. magnetic force

  522. pulling your soul.

  523. Keeping it together.

  524. Not letting your

  525. desires spill over

  526. and reach beyond

  527. the bounds

  528. that God has

  529. designed for you.

  530. Philippians 3

    Philippians 3:7

  531. verses 7 and 8

  532. tell us that

  533. it's the surpassing

  534. worth of knowing

  535. Christ Jesus,

  536. my Lord.

  537. That's my

  538. overriding ambition,

  539. says Paul.

  540. It's to gain Christ.

  541. See, it's this

  542. love for Christ

  543. at the core

  544. of my being,

  545. Him dwelling in me,

  546. that holds me

  547. together

  548. and makes me

  549. satisfied.

  550. If you'll look

  551. at verse 7

  552. as we saw last week,

  553. you find that

  554. verse 7,

  555. the peace of God.

  556. Put your finger

  557. on that.

  558. And then you'll look

  559. at verse 9 again.

  560. We saw this last week

  561. as well.

  562. The God of peace.

  563. peace.

  564. It's only by grace

  565. that you and I

  566. can experience

  567. the peace of God.

  568. And once you've

  569. experienced this

  570. peace from God

  571. by grace,

  572. you won't settle

  573. for just the peace.

  574. You want the God

  575. of peace Himself.

  576. You want more,

  577. not just the peace,

  578. but you want God.

  579. That's what your soul

  580. now wants.

  581. More and more

  582. and more.

  583. Because our souls

  584. are not made

  585. for anything else

  586. in this world,

  587. we will not find

  588. contentment.

  589. No one will find

  590. true contentment

  591. until their soul

  592. knows the God

  593. of peace.

  594. Jeremiah Burroughs

  595. says to the church,

  596. my brethren,

  597. the reason why

  598. you do not have

  599. contentment in the

  600. things of this world

  601. is not that you

  602. do not have

  603. enough of them.

  604. What's the reason

  605. then?

  606. The reason,

  607. he says,

  608. is that these things

  609. are not proportional

  610. to that immortal

  611. soul of yours

  612. that it is capable

  613. of God Himself.

  614. Your soul

  615. is immortal

  616. and your soul

  617. is capable

  618. of fellowship

  619. with God Himself.

  620. That's why

  621. nothing short

  622. of God Himself

  623. will satisfy

  624. the longings

  625. of our soul.

  626. That's why

  627. there's no contentment

  628. outside of God

  629. through Christ.

  630. So Paul,

  631. verse 13,

  632. in all,

  633. I am being made

  634. strong

  635. in the one

  636. empowering me,

  637. Jesus Christ.

  638. It's God's Spirit

  639. with us

  640. giving us

  641. Christ's

  642. own strength.

  643. I thought of how

  644. this church

  645. in Philippi

  646. got to witness

  647. firsthand

  648. that Paul

  649. isn't just

  650. saying these words,

  651. he's lived it.

  652. You remember

  653. the Philippian jailer

  654. and his entire

  655. household?

  656. Surely some of them

  657. are still part

  658. of this church

  659. in Philippi

  660. years later.

  661. They've seen

  662. this contentment

  663. on display.

  664. Paul and Silas,

  665. we read in Acts 16,

  666. 25.

  667. It was midnight

  668. and these

  669. missionaries

  670. were praying

  671. and singing

  672. hymns to God.

  673. This is while

  674. their backs

  675. are open

  676. and bleeding

  677. and they're

  678. in stocks

  679. chained up

  680. and the other

  681. prisoners

  682. were listening

  683. to them.

  684. Wouldn't you

  685. be listening

  686. if you saw

  687. two men

  688. in that condition

  689. physically

  690. singing,

  691. praising their

  692. God

  693. and praying

  694. out loud

  695. for all to hear?

  696. That's the picture

  697. of contentment.

  698. I was thinking

  699. about all of the

  700. songs we sang

  701. today would have

  702. been a wonderful

  703. witness.

  704. If any one of us

  705. were to be arrested,

  706. we could sing

  707. any one of these

  708. five songs

  709. and the Lord

  710. can minister

  711. and we can pray

  712. as we prayed

  713. before the service

  714. today and the Lord

  715. will use that

  716. to draw others

  717. because it's

  718. his ministry

  719. in the life

  720. of a Christian.

  721. So we don't

  722. need to know

  723. what were the hymns

  724. that Paul and Silas

  725. were singing

  726. because they're

  727. singing the truth

  728. of the gospel

  729. of Jesus Christ.

  730. I do know

  731. that Paul

  732. being a Jew

  733. and being a Pharisee

  734. of Pharisees,

  735. he would have

  736. kept all of the

  737. festivals

  738. and approached

  739. the temple

  740. and approached

  741. the hill

  742. of Zion

  743. where you

  744. as God's people

  745. would go to be

  746. in his presence

  747. and you would have

  748. sung what you

  749. were supposed to sing

  750. as you ascend

  751. these hills

  752. toward Jerusalem.

  753. These were special

  754. psalms in the Psalter

  755. called the Songs

  756. of Ascent.

  757. And of those

  758. Songs of Ascent

  759. one of them

  760. is about contentment.

  761. Psalm 131.

  762. This would have

  763. been a familiar

  764. psalm

  765. to the church

  766. and to Paul.

  767. I have soothed

  768. and calmed

  769. my soul.

  770. Now my soul

  771. is content

  772. at rest.

  773. Hope now

  774. in the Lord

  775. from this time

  776. forth

  777. and forever

  778. and forever

  779. more.

  780. Because God

  781. himself

  782. is training

  783. all those

  784. that he saved.

  785. You and I

  786. we learn to

  787. treasure

  788. God

  789. with us

  790. more and more.

  791. And as Christ

  792. trains us

  793. Reformed Heritage

  794. Church

  795. we can be

  796. the most

  797. content people

  798. on planet earth

  799. for the glory

  800. of God

  801. and for our

  802. good.

  803. Let's pray

  804. for his help

  805. to do this

  806. in us

  807. in our lives.

  808. Father

  809. thank you

  810. for your word.

  811. Thank you

  812. for this testimony.

  813. We thank you

  814. Lord

  815. for Jesus

  816. Christ

  817. who came

  818. and secured

  819. the contentment

  820. the access

  821. to the presence

  822. of God

  823. the only source

  824. of true

  825. peace

  826. and true joy.

  827. please teach us

  828. to rejoice

  829. in the Lord

  830. always

  831. because Christ

  832. himself

  833. is our strength.

  834. Amen.

  835. Amen.

  836. Amen.

  837. Amen.
