  1. First Samuel chapter 17 and you know, I hope you do that is more

    1 Samuel 17 chapter mention

  2. than just a an update on where our society is at.

  3. I hope we don't just shake your head and say, wow, I can't

  4. believe it. And and follow that same path.

  5. I hope we are doing something about that.

  6. And I was reading about this the other night, but that's the

  7. that's the whole purpose of us coming to church.

  8. Yes, we definitely learned the Bible, but we're also instructed

  9. by our pastor, who I believe God gives an extra bit of wisdom.

  10. I believe that to lead lead people.

  11. He's not the oldest in the room. He hasn't been maybe have the

  12. most experience in every aspect of life.

  13. But I believe God gives a pastor a special wisdom.

  14. And so be listening for that. You know, what's interesting is

  15. I don't understand that either. How?

  16. Well, I'll just tell you. So New Year's Eve, I was out on

  17. a job and and one of the guys that is a subcontractor for us,

  18. I asked him what he was doing New Year's Eve.

  19. He said, well, we were going to go out to eat, but I, I cannot

  20. get my 9 year old off the phone when we're out to eat.

  21. I said take it away. Well, yeah, I don't want to.

  22. I don't want to have that fight. It's just pretty amazing to me.

  23. You know, parents are not parents.

  24. You can't even force your 9 year old to get off the phone so he

  25. can eat with you. But anyways, I say that to say

  26. just make sure we're not falling into that same trap ourselves.

  27. I just don't want to have that fight.

  28. Have that fight and it'll be very good for you down down the

  29. road in the long run. So first Samuel chapter 17,

    1 Samuel 17 chapter mention

  30. brother Matt, can I get you to grab this mic here?

  31. We're going to do some some, I'm going to have you all read some

  32. verses because we got a bunch of them.

  33. Is anybody in the sun with just you hiding behind the screens?

  34. All right, we'll have that yellow mic that we use for the

  35. offering. But First Samuel 17 is where

  36. we're going to start. And if you remember, we are in

  37. our valleys. And I want to just review

  38. quickly because we are getting into them pretty far now.

  39. We only have 3 left, including today.

  40. And so we have looked at the valley of discouragement, the

  41. valley of disobedience last week, the valley of deception,

  42. which is exactly what he's talking about.

  43. We are in this age of, of brother Cloud calls it the

  44. pornographic age. It's just this visual, a age

  45. that that we, I think sometimes just don't even really put our

  46. guard up because we get so normalized to, to everything

  47. that our eyes see day-to-day, especially on social media.

  48. I believe and, and don't think for a second that that's not

  49. Satan's plan to desensitize us. You know, some of the things we

  50. see in our culture. How do we get there?

  51. We get desensitized to where even the Christians aren't

  52. shocked by it. We just, well, that's, that's

  53. normal. Let's not get there.

  54. But that's that valley of deception.

  55. That's what happened with Samson, as we saw last week, and

  56. we're going to look at this morning, the valley of doubt.

  57. And I would say discouragement and doubt maybe go hand in hand.

  58. We talked about discouragement a few weeks ago, the valley of

  59. discouragement. But discouragement and doubt are

  60. maybe not similar, but hand in hand.

  61. And they are also doubt is very contagious as well.

  62. And you can see that in in work, You can see that in sports.

  63. You know, if a sports team doesn't have the confidence that

  64. they're going to beat this team they're playing against,

  65. everybody feels that even if one or two of them do have that

  66. confidence, they get to the point maybe halfway through the

  67. game and they're losing and their quarterback is I knew this

  68. was going to happen or whatever. Then the whole team kind of and

  69. you can see it. You can see it in their faces

  70. and their body language. And so doubt can be contagious,

  71. you know, even on a spiritual level or in, in our lives as

  72. well. So we're going to look at that

  73. this morning. First Samuel chapter 17, Brother

    1 Samuel 17 chapter mention

  74. Matt, I will give you a verse here in just a second.

  75. So you'll you'll know ahead of time.

  76. And I'm going to, I'm just going to go right on down the line

  77. around the auditorium. But the first Samuel chapter 17

    1 Samuel 17 chapter mention

  78. and verses 2 and three. And we're not going to we're not

  79. going to read this whole passage because we're very familiar with

  80. the story of David. But we are going to pull a few

  81. things out of this. In verse number two of First

    1 Samuel 17 chapter mention

  82. Samuel chapter 17, it says, and Saul and the men of Israel were

  83. gathered together and pitched by the valley of Elah and set the

  84. battle in a ray against the Philistines.

  85. And the Philistines stood on a mountain on one side and Israel

  86. stood on a mountain on the other side, and there was a valley

  87. between them. And then we get into the story

  88. of David and Goliath. You know, and even even today,

  89. people who don't know anything about the Bible, they might not

  90. even realize the story of David and Goliath comes from the

  91. Bible. We'll use that as a, as a way to

  92. say, wow, this is a, this is a David and Goliath battle here or

  93. whatever to say maybe an underdog that is going up

  94. against a very, very good team, whether it's in college sports

  95. or whatever, You'll see that fairly often.

  96. But, but it's this, this story became a part of Jewish history

  97. after it happened. I mean forever, even even now.

  98. But in Jewish history, this was one of the things they look back

  99. to their King David and the valley of Elah.

  100. We've been, we've been giving you a definition on each one of

  101. these. So the valley of Elah Elah means

  102. oak or strong tree. And I think this is a fitting

  103. valley to pick for the, for this idea of doubt, because doubt is

  104. a strong thing in our lives. It, it really is.

  105. If you well, we'll get into it. It is a very strong, very strong

  106. thing in our lives. Just like last week, that this,

  107. that vine, it's soft, but it's strong.

  108. Oak trees are a little bit different.

  109. They're just plain old strong and they're hard.

  110. Run into them once and you'll find out all about it.

  111. But they are, they're hard. And so is doubt in our lives.

  112. Doubt is the enemy of the child of God.

  113. I'm going to ask you this. What is the opposite of doubt?

  114. Think, think about it. One word.

  115. What it What would be the opposite of doubt?

  116. OK, confidence. Who said that, Brother David?

  117. Faith. That's what I'm looking for.

  118. Faith Bible tells us the just shall live by doubt, right?

  119. I mean, it's fine to doubt. No, it says the just shall live

  120. by faith. Brother Matt, I'm going to give

  121. you Romans 117. Miss Ariana, you good to read?

  122. You good to read? Galatians, 311.

  123. Galatians 311. Brother Johnny Hebrews, 1038.

  124. Miss Sotol Habakkuk 24. Habakkuk 24 and I think I will

  125. stop stop with those for now. We'll be in first Samuel 17 for

  126. the most part. But yeah, the the opposite of

  127. doubt is faith. And the Bible tells us the just

  128. shall live by faith. And, and we've talked about this

  129. many times in any kind of policy or standards or procedures in

  130. work, shall is not an option. You will do that.

  131. And so this is a very strong command.

  132. The just must live by faith. Brother Matt.

  133. Romans 117. Romans 117 For therein is the

  134. righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith, as it is

  135. written, that just shall live by faith.

  136. As it is revealed the righteousness is is in that the

  137. fact that the just are living by faith.

  138. Miss Ariana Galatians, 311. But but that no man is justified

  139. by the law in the sight of God, it is evident, for the just

  140. shall live by faith. Very good brother Johnny, jump

  141. right to to that next one. What did I give you?

  142. Hebrews. 1038 Now that just shall live by faith.

  143. But if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in

  144. him. That's a that's an interesting

  145. verse and a strong verse. Bible tells us that too, that,

  146. that in other places without faith, it's impossible to please

  147. God. And we looked at that a few

  148. weeks ago. But it my soul has no pleasure

  149. in the one that's not living by faith.

  150. Therefore, if we're living in doubt or lack of confidence or

  151. whatever word we want to use for that, God is not pleased with

  152. it. Miss Sotol.

  153. Habakkuk. Behold, the soul which is lifted

  154. up is not upright in him, but the just shall live by faith.

  155. Just shall live by faith I got AI got a poem I want to read you

  156. Doubt sees the obstacles Faith sees the way doubt sees the

  157. darkest night Faith sees the day Doubt dreads to take a step

  158. Faith soars on high doubt questions who believes faith

  159. answers I and you know this is this is a very practical thing.

  160. I think sometimes we think faith is kind of faith is this super

  161. spiritual thing that only the, you know, the, the big giants,

  162. we even call them that the giants of the faith.

  163. That's not what faith is. Faith is a simple thing.

  164. It's a daily decision, a a minute by minute decision.

  165. Doubt sees the obstacles. Faith sees the way.

  166. Doubt sees the darkest night. Faith sees the day.

  167. Doubt dreads to take a step. How often do we see that we're

  168. just frozen in, in fear. I don't know which way to go.

  169. So I'm not going anywhere. And it says, but faith soars on

  170. high doubt questions who believes and faith answers.

  171. I and you know, we do, we do this with our kids often.

  172. Now Emma's, Emma's 12 years old. She she has a brain.

  173. God gave her a brain for a reason.

  174. And you probably deal with this with your kids.

  175. And so when they come to you with a very simple question and

  176. very simple problem and say, I can't figure this out.

  177. If you, you are teaching them to have that doubt, that fear, that

  178. lack of confidence, everything when you just go do it for them.

  179. What I do with Emma and I know probably many of you do is

  180. figure it out. That's what that's the answer.

  181. Go figure it out. And that's how faith is.

  182. Doubt questions who believes I do based on God's word.

  183. Doubt is afraid to take a step. And so we're going to we're

  184. going to pray and then we're going to get right into this.

  185. I'm not going to spend too much time on the story itself because

  186. we know the story of David, but we're going to look at a few

  187. things that we can pull from it and hopefully help us this

  188. morning. So let's pray and we'll get

  189. right into it. Father, I thank you for this day

  190. you've given us. Thank you for another

  191. opportunity we have to open your word.

  192. God, I pray that you would meet with us this morning here in

  193. Sunday school, but also in the morning service.

  194. Pray that you would fill our hearts with the faith that we

  195. need to work for you and to take steps forward for you.

  196. God, I know there are things in our lives sometimes that

  197. sometimes it's even sin that just freezes us in our tracks

  198. and we're afraid to move forward for you God, I pray that we

  199. would look at this story with David and some of the other bad

  200. examples in this story and, and make changes in our lives to to

  201. be living by faith as you command us to do in your word,

  202. in Jesus name I pray, Amen. So let's look at some of the

  203. events here in the story of David and Goliath.

  204. And the first thing that I have is there was a commitment.

  205. Look at First Samuel chapter 17 and verse 32.

    1 Samuel 17 chapter mention

  206. There was a commitment from David, it says, and David said

  207. to Saul, let no man's heart fail because of him.

  208. That the, the, the giant they're facing, no, let nobody's heart

  209. fail because of him. Thy servant will go and fight

  210. with this Philistine. David made a commitment.

  211. And I think sometimes, you know, this is what David's brothers

  212. definitely thought when he came to that battle.

  213. They thought he was naive kind of misunderstanding of what's

  214. actually going on at this battle.

  215. You just want to see some blood and some gore.

  216. I mean, we hear his brothers tell him that, but I think David

  217. knew exactly what was going on here.

  218. If you read the story and we won't take the time to do it,

  219. but if you read the story, David is is he asked the questions

  220. who, why are we just standing here and letting this giant,

  221. this man, this Philistine curse our God?

  222. And verse 26, David spake to the men that stood by him saying

  223. what shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine and

  224. taketh away the reproach from Israel.

  225. For who is this uncircum Philistine, uncircumcised

  226. Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?

  227. David wasn't under any pie in the sky idea that well, I'll

  228. just go out there and fight this 10 foot tall man.

  229. I mean, it's almost as tall as this, as tall as this, this

  230. building here. That's a tall, tall man.

  231. And you know, he wasn't as as thin as I am and just 10 feet

  232. tall. He's a big man.

  233. And I don't think for for a second that David had zero fear

  234. of Goliath, but I think his confidence, his faith in his God

  235. that he would help him win the victory was more than that that

  236. that fear. But he says thy servant will go

  237. and fight with this Philistine. And, you know, it began with,

  238. you know, David wasn't reluctant to step forward and face this

  239. difficulty. We read, I read that poem, doubt

  240. dreads to take a step. Faith soars on high.

  241. How does faith soar? It doesn't just because I've

  242. just decided I'm going to soar. It starts taking steps.

  243. And the next thing you know, think about the story of David,

  244. He, he starts running toward this Philistine.

  245. That's faith, that's confidence that whatever God has in store

  246. here, it's, it's about to happen because he's, he's committed.

  247. He's running toward this Philistine.

  248. And I think sometimes, you know, we will see maybe even our kids,

  249. but other people in the church that really decide, you know

  250. what I'm going to, I'm going to go forward for God and us or

  251. some of us mature Christians, I've seen this before.

  252. We'll see how long that lasts. Why are we do it?

  253. Why? That's what David's brothers.

  254. That's what even Saul was doing to David when David said, why is

  255. this, this uncircumcised Philistine defying the armies of

  256. the living God and nobody's doing anything about it.

  257. They were afraid to take a step. And that's the next point.

  258. In verse 33, we see not only commitment but cowardice.

  259. Verse 33 of chapter 17. And Saul said to David, this is

  260. the first thing Saul has said at this point since David has

  261. gotten to this, to this battlefield.

  262. The first thing you hears from Saul.

  263. Saul said to David, thou art not able to go against this

  264. Philistine to fight with him. Imagine if you imagine if you

  265. went to your pastor and said, pastor, I've got this great

  266. idea. I think in my neighborhood, what

  267. I'm going to do is this summer, I'm going to start a Bible

  268. study. And he said, yeah, that's not

  269. going to work. I mean, imagine what that does

  270. for for what you've been thinking and praying about and

  271. planning for. Nah, that's not going to work.

  272. That's what Saul just did to David.

  273. Hey, I'm going to go and I'm going to kill this Philistine.

  274. I'm going to, I'm going to, I'm going to fight him.

  275. Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with

  276. him. This cowardice, you know, and I

  277. think I, I already kind of mentioned this, but I think how

  278. often we, we do that we discourage our youth, you know,

  279. parents especially, and I hope it's I hope it's not us, but you

  280. know, if God is working in your kids hearts and they man, I

  281. think I might be called in the mission field.

  282. I'm not sure. Don't die.

  283. You don't want to do that. I mean, I've literally heard

  284. parents of kids that I grew up with when when we were young.

  285. You don't want to waste your life doing that.

  286. I mean, you have waste. It's not a waste.

  287. This is this is for God. The just shall live by faith.

  288. But David's brothers, Saul, all showing this cowardice and, and

  289. really, you know, they were so discouraged day after day after

  290. day, this giant comes out, mocks them, mocks their God.

  291. And it's one of those things, you know how, how they say time

  292. heals everything? I think sometimes time actually

  293. prevents healing on especially on relationships and things like

  294. that. Because if you're, if you and a

  295. sibling are being stubborn, we're not talking.

  296. The longer it goes on, does it get easier or harder to make

  297. that phone call or that that meet up or whatever and say, you

  298. know what, we need to squash this.

  299. It gets harder. So I think as Goliath came out

  300. the first day, you know, and then the second day and then the

  301. third day and by day 5 or 6 or 7, now how do you now go, hey,

  302. stop talking like that. I'm coming to fight you that I

  303. think they just got frozen in this fear.

  304. But then discouragement. What are we going to do?

  305. We have no idea what we're going to do, in fact.

  306. And you know, when this is going on, you have to remember that

  307. Saul has already been cursed with this evil spirit.

  308. And and you can imagine what's going through Saul's mind when

  309. when, when Goliath is out there cursing his guy.

  310. He's not a capable leader at this point.

  311. He's afraid he was Bible even says that people that saw saw

  312. Saul and Jonathan fight. They fought with the courage of

  313. lions. I mean, these were some

  314. warriors, but he's he's not even in his right mind.

  315. So now he's afraid. He's got this doubt this this

  316. discouragement and and he's acting like a coward.

  317. David, you're not able to do it. You're not going to be able to.

  318. And I hope you're applying this in in your own lives.

  319. This doubt in our lives give makes us act this way toward

  320. others that are having that are that do have strong faith and we

  321. try to chop them down and I won't won't go into that this

  322. morning. But you, they've done whole

  323. studies with monkeys that you know, when, when they put two or

  324. three of them in a in a room and when one of them tries to climb

  325. this rope that's in the middle of the room, they, they swat

  326. them down And eventually none of the three original monkeys are

  327. in the room. But they've trained them that

  328. when, when you climb that rope, swat the other one down, knock

  329. him off that rope. He's not allowed to do that.

  330. And they don't even know why, but they're knocking the other

  331. one off the rope. We, we don't do that.

  332. And I think we get like that as Christians, we get so full of

  333. doubt that we're knocking each other down to that's, that's too

  334. big of an idea. You let the pastor decide that

  335. you let you let the, the deacons or whoever, you let them go do

  336. that, that work. We don't do that, but the just

  337. shall live by faith. There's nothing saying that the

  338. regular old person in the in the church can't really live by this

  339. faith that God gives them in their life.

  340. And that leads to our next point.

  341. David had confidence in his God. Let's see, Adeline, can you read

  342. Romans chapter 8 and verse 31? When we get there, Romans 831,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  343. we're going to go to first Samuel 17 and 30, verse 34.

  344. So here's David's confidence. And David said unto Saul, Thy

  345. servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion and a

  346. bear, and took a lamb out of the flock.

  347. And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out

  348. of his mouth. And when he arose against me, I

  349. caught him by his beard and smote him, and slew him.

  350. Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear.

  351. And this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of

  352. them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

  353. David said, Moreover, the Lord that delivered me out of the paw

  354. of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me

  355. out of the hand of this Philistine.

  356. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.

  357. But David had a confidence in his God.

  358. Adeline Romans 831 If God be for us, who can be against us?

  359. And you know, when we go out into our community to to knock

  360. on doors or to whatever outreach we're doing, or even just, it

  361. doesn't have to be scheduled or purposeful outreach, just

  362. something where we're out in our community, we're out grocery

  363. shopping or whatever. If God be for us, who can be

  364. against us? And you know, that goes for

  365. other things as well, depression, temptation, anxiety,

  366. you know, and some are more prone to those things than

  367. others. But if God be for us, these

  368. things can't stand against us. And I, and I think if we would

  369. get a hold of that fact, as we see in this story, Saul had not

  370. come to grips with the fact that if God is for us, this giant

  371. can't stand against us. But it took, as the Bible says,

  372. a Ruddy youth to teach them God's on our side.

  373. This, this uncircumcised Philistine doesn't have a chance

  374. if, if God is God is on our side and if I go in the strength of

  375. the Lord. But then we have this

  376. confrontation, verses 40 through 48.

  377. And we know that confrontation where David faces Goliath and

  378. ends up killing him. And but the key here is his

  379. faith in his God. And then finally, and we're

  380. clipping through these because we know the story, but finally

  381. we have the conquest. Look at verses 49 to 51 of First

  382. Samuel 17 And David put his hand in his bag and took thence a

  383. stone and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead,

  384. that the stone sunk into his forehead and he fell upon his

  385. faith face to the earth. I don't remember the other

  386. passage, but there's a passage that says that Golias forehead

  387. became as water and the stone just went right in and it and he

  388. smote him in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead

  389. and he fell upon his face to the earth.

  390. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with

  391. a stone and smote the Philistine and slew him.

  392. But there was no sword in his in the hand of David.

  393. He didn't fight with a sword. He had not proved that.

  394. Remember he he was given that and he gives it back to Saul and

  395. goes out with his sling. So David prevailed over the

  396. Philistine with a sling. Oops, sorry, there was no sword

  397. in the hand of David. Therefore David ran and stood

  398. upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of

  399. the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head

  400. therewith. And when the Philistines saw

  401. their champion was dead, they fled.

  402. And I want to make one point here with David in this valley

  403. of Elah running toward Goliath, there was only one way.

  404. Once he got in front of that that giant.

  405. And once he had made this claim that I'm going to feed your

  406. carcass to the birds of the field and to the to the to the

  407. birds of the air and the beasts of the field.

  408. When he made that claim, there was one way to get out of this

  409. forward. He had to go through this valley

  410. and he went forward by faith. And we see that through this

  411. whole chapter, how David, David was not David didn't go tell

  412. Goliath, I've killed a lion before, I've killed a bear

  413. before and I can kill you. He didn't tell Goliath that his

  414. confidence was coming from that. But he tells Goliath, you've

  415. defied God and God is going to give you into my hand.

  416. So we finally have this conquest in in in this in this story.

  417. But then we have something that is essential.

  418. And we've already kind of talked about about this.

  419. Hannah, could you read Hebrews 11/6?

  420. I know I didn't give you time, but Hebrews Chapter 11 and verse

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  421. 6, I already mentioned this verse, but there is something in

  422. order to face this doubt that we must have.

  423. And Hebrews Chapter 11, verse 6, is that on or do brother Josh

    Hebrews 11:6

  424. take it, says it's on. He must have took it down and

  425. there's nobody back there. Thank you.

  426. But without faith, it is impossible to please him.

  427. And so then that says, I think sometimes we live our lives like

  428. that. Well, I'm going to please God by

  429. going out and knocking on doors with no faith.

  430. I have no, no thought that, you know, we even say it sometimes.

  431. I know it's a lot harder than it used to be.

  432. You know, people just don't really, you know, want to talk

  433. about their door. Where's our faith?

  434. We're going out to serve the living and true God, the same

  435. one that David was relying on to take this giant down.

  436. And we even say it because it's acceptable.

  437. Yeah. We'll see what happens when we

  438. go out to serve him. the IT is impossible to please him without

  439. faith. Take that in our in our more

  440. practically in our own lives. Without faith, it is impossible

  441. to please him. Without faith that I'm going to

  442. wake up and I'm going to get in my Bible and I'm going to and

  443. I'm going to ask God today to help me get me through this bout

  444. of anxiety that I've been dealing with.

  445. No, I'm just going to get up and I'm just going to deal with it.

  446. And I know it's going to crush me all day long.

  447. Without faith, it is impossible to please him.

  448. And I'm being a little bit more practical because I think

  449. sometimes we think this is just a spiritual thing.

  450. It is spiritual, but it it applies to our very physical,

  451. very practical lives, our faith that God can help us through our

  452. daily lives. So without faith, let's see.

  453. Let me give you some verses. Brother John, can you read

  454. Hebrews 725 and Miss Marlisa John 637?

  455. Did I skip somebody? OK, but I but if if if you can,

  456. does anybody in here know how to use the the board?

  457. Yeah, because I think the volume got shut down.

  458. OK, that's fine. Just talk loud.

  459. I'm doing it more for the live stream because brother knitting

  460. watches this and everything. And he said when you do verses

  461. they can't hear him, but just just speak loud and we should be

  462. OK. But without faith there is no

  463. pardon from sin. And we know that.

  464. Ephesians 28 and 9 For by grace are ye saved through faith, and

  465. that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of

  466. works, lest any man should boast.

  467. There is no pardon though, without faith.

  468. Hebrews 725 brother John. And this is where this is where

  469. maybe maybe we apply it a little bit more spiritually, but we

  470. must have faith in God's power to save us.

  471. OK. And that's what he just read.

  472. He is able to save them to the uttermost.

  473. He is able Hebrew. Sorry, John 637 is this is his

  474. not only his power to save, but his promise to save those that

  475. do come to him. Miss Marlisa.

  476. John, 637. I will in no wise cast out.

  477. That's a promise if you come to me, which is why, you know, we

  478. don't just hound on Calvinism for the sake of hounding on

  479. Calvinism. But when, when we are told all

  480. that come to me, I will not cast them out.

  481. That's a promise to those that come to God.

  482. But we must come in faith, and it's a promise to save those

  483. that come in faith to him, so that without faith there is no

  484. pardon, but also without faith. And I have to hurry now there is

  485. no peace. And let's see, Caitlin, can you

  486. read John 1028? And Gray, can you read first

  487. Peter 15? I'm going to give a few more

  488. too, actually. Gray Romans 623, Sorry.

  489. So John 1028, Romans 623 Brittany, are you good to read

  490. first Peter 1/5 and then let's see, Miss Barbara, are you good

  491. to read Second Timothy 112 and then Brother Scott Philippians

  492. 47 That one we know, but I'm going to have you read it

  493. anyways. So without faith, there is no

  494. peace in our lives either. And we talked about this, so I'm

  495. not going to dwell on it too much, but pastor just did in one

  496. of our discipleship courses, a couple lessons on eternal

  497. security. And you know, when he, he, he

  498. says this fairly often. I don't know how somebody can go

  499. through their lives without Christ.

  500. And I agree with that because not only do we have, does it

  501. change our lives, but it gives us a peace in our lives knowing

  502. no matter what happens, how can these martyrs go to the go to

  503. the stake or go to the whatever torture they were going to?

  504. How could they go there with this confidence in God and this

  505. peace? It was because of their faith in

  506. God. They were their souls were

  507. eternally secure. And so we already, we already

  508. mentioned this, but there must be a faith in God's promise to

  509. save. Without it, there is no peace.

  510. John, 1028. That brings a lot of peace,

  511. knowing I'll never perish, not die, but perish and be separated

  512. from God. I'll never perish.

  513. There's a promise to save our soul.

  514. Romans 623. We know this one, but go ahead,

  515. Gray, that gift of God, a promise to save.

  516. And then there's a we have faith which gives us peace in God's

  517. power to keep us. And I think this takes takes

  518. faith to to accept Christ, but then the faith that he can

  519. actually keep us is what gives us that peace in our daily

  520. lives. First Peter 15 and that's that's

  521. so important. We are not kept by our good

  522. works. You know, I think sometimes that

  523. Lordship salvation where you know, OK, you accepted Christ,

  524. but now you've really got to keep him Lord of your life.

  525. We're not keeping our salvation. God is doing that.

  526. Second Timothy, 112. Against that day, that day where

  527. we stand before God and he says Christ kept you so you are

  528. saved. That eternal security that gives

  529. us peace and without faith we don't have peace.

  530. Without that faith that he is able, as she just read, to keep

  531. us, we don't have that peace. And then knowing that eternal,

  532. our eternal security depends on God and not ourselves brings us

  533. assurance which we we already have been talking about.

  534. But Philippians 47 and the peace of God, which passes all

  535. understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ

  536. Jesus. Why do even Christians spend

  537. their entire lives tossed around, not sure what they

  538. believe, not sure because they don't, they don't have the peace

  539. of God, which comes from a faith in God that he is keeping our

  540. souls. It does pass all understanding

  541. when you see a parent whose child is, is taken, you know,

  542. through an accident or through murder or whatever else.

  543. And they have this peace, how it passes all understanding, but

  544. it's a, it's a peace because of the faith that they have in, in

  545. what God promised he would do in keeping us until that day.

  546. And then I'm going to, I'm going to have to move very quickly.

  547. But without faith, we have no prayer life.

  548. So remember, we're talking about what is this essential thing in

  549. order to destroy doubt in our lives.

  550. And it's faith. And so without faith, we have no

  551. prayer life. Think about that.

  552. It makes sense if you don't have faith that what you're praying

  553. is actually going to be answer. What is the point of praying?

  554. It takes faith. And Matthew 922 says that OFT

  555. times it cast him into the fire. Remember this is the dad talking

  556. to Jesus about his son. This demon cast him into the

  557. fire and into the waters to destroy him.

  558. But if thou canst do anything, have compassion on us and help

  559. us. And Jesus said unto him, if thou

  560. canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth

  561. and, and, and if we don't believe, what's the point of

  562. praying? And I think that's why some of

  563. us don't pray. We don't even we don't have

  564. faith that it's going to be answered.

  565. So what's the point? And practically that actually

  566. makes sense. What is the point?

  567. So then we are told without faith, it's impossible to please

  568. him. So we need to have that

  569. essential thing, faith in order to have a prayer life.

  570. And I'll end with these couple things.

  571. There is there is a directive here.

  572. Then in Mark 11/22, Jesus tells, tells us, and Jesus answering

  573. said unto them, have faith in God.

  574. We can have faith in a lot of different things.

  575. We can have faith in the fact that, you know, the time we've

  576. spent in the gym will get us through certain things and it

  577. will, but our faith is not put in ourselves.

  578. Have faith in God and exercise that faith in God.

  579. So if we are if we're told to have faith and Jesus himself

  580. tells us to have faith in God, then how do we exercise that

  581. faith? And I think it goes back to the

  582. to the little kids song. Read your Bible, pray every day

  583. and you'll grow, grow, grow. What's growing our faith, right?

  584. Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

  585. And I'll leave you with just these two things because we're

  586. out of time. How do we build our faith by

  587. hearing the word of God. First of all, we, we read it

  588. ourselves and hopefully y'all have made some kind of a

  589. resolution to, to do that every day and are keeping it.

  590. But that's how we grow in faith. We read and and study the word

  591. of God and then we also come to church and I, I, it's simple.

  592. It's so simple, but it's so important.

  593. That's how we grow our faith. We attend the House of God where

  594. the word of God is preached, and faith cometh by hearing that

  595. word and hearing by the word of God.

  596. And so how do we grow our faith? By hearing the word of God, By

  597. being where the Word of God is being preached, By being where

  598. the Word of God is being taught and read and reading it

  599. ourselves. And so we'll end with this.

  600. If we want to avoid defeat in the valley of doubt, we must

  601. work to build our faith. It is through faith in the power

  602. of God that we can achieve great victories in our lives.

  603. And I would say it's true faith in the power of God that we

  604. could achieve even small victories in our lives.

  605. We have no victory without the power of God in our lives.

  606. And I think David realized that and David took that with him

  607. through his entire life. And we see David accomplish a

  608. lot of things, all going back to, I know that God, that with

  609. the power of God, I can do these things.

  610. I've, I killed a lion, I killed a bear, I killed a Philistine.

  611. And we see that in David's entire life.

  612. But faith in God gives us confidence to go through that

  613. valley, but also the power that we need to go through that

  614. valley. And so hopefully you, you picked

  615. up something from that this morning and apply it to our

  616. lives. These are practical things, not

  617. just spiritual that we can apply and, and make a big difference

  618. in our lives. Let's pray and we'll be

  619. finished. Father, thank you for this that

  620. you've given us. Thank you again for the all that

  621. we can learn from your word. Thank You that it is alive and

  622. it's powerful. God, I just pray that for myself

  623. and for all of us here in this room today that we would not

  624. just take it as a head knowledge and something that we learn on

  625. Sundays and then forget about through the week.

  626. I pray that we would apply it to our lives so that we can have

  627. faith and be able to please You with our lives.

  628. Pray that you bless this next service.

  629. Be with Pastor as he preaches. I pray you'd fill him with your

  630. power and that you'd feed us from your word.

  631. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

  632. We're dismissed.
