  1. 1 Samuel 8 is where we're going to be at.

  2. God tells us in 1 Timothy 3 that all scripture is spirit-breathed.

  3. In Hebrew 4, God tells us that his word is living, powerful, and piercing.

  4. I'll read aloud as you follow along.

  5. When I'm finished reading, I'll say the word of God for the people of God.

  6. If you receive God's word by faith this way,

  7. then please respond by saying thanks be to God.

  8. When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel.

  9. His firstborn son was named Joel.

  10. The second was Abijah.

  11. They were judges in Beersheba.

  12. However, his sons did not walk in his ways.

  13. They turned towards dishonest prophet, took bribes, and perverted justice.

  14. So all the elders of Israel gathered together and went to Samuel at Ramah and said to him,

  15. Look, you are old. Your sons do not walk in your ways.

  16. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us, the same as all the other nations have.

  17. When they said, Give us a king to judge us, Samuel considered a demand to be wrong.

  18. So he prayed to the Lord.

  19. But the Lord told him, Listen to the people and everything they say to you.

  20. They have not rejected you.

  21. They have rejected me as their king.

  22. They are doing the same thing to you that they have done to me since the day I brought them out of Egypt until this day,

  23. abandoning me and worshiping other gods.

  24. Listen to them, but solemnly warn them and tell them about the customary rights of the king who will reign over them.

  25. Samuel told all the Lord's words to the people who were asking him for a king.

  26. He said, These are the rights of the king who will reign over you.

  27. He will take your sons and put them to his use in his chariots, on his horses, or running in front of his chariots.

  28. He can appoint them for his use as commanders of thousands or commanders of fifties,

  29. to plow his ground and reap his harvest,

  30. or to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.

  31. He can take your daughters to become perfumers, cooks, and bakers.

  32. He can take your best fields, vineyards, and olive orchards, and give them to his servants.

  33. He can take a tenth of your grain of your vineyards and give them to his officials and servants.

  34. He can take your male servants, your female servants, your best cattle, your donkeys, and use them for his work.

  35. He can take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves can become his servants.

  36. When that day comes, you will cry out because of the king you've chosen for yourselves.

  37. But the Lord won't answer you on that day.

  38. The people refused to listen to Samuel.

  39. No, they said, We must have a king over us.

  40. Then we'll be like all the other nations.

  41. Our king will judge us, go out before us, and fight our battles.

  42. Samuel listened to all the people's words and then repeated them to the Lord.

  43. Listen to them, the Lord told Samuel.

  44. Appoint a king for them.

  45. Then Samuel told the men of Israel, Each of you, go back to your city.

  46. The word of God for the people of God.

  47. Isaiah 40 says that the grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  48. In Luke 1, no word from God shall be void of power.

  49. Let's pray.

  50. Amen.

  51. Lord, we pray that your word will go forth.

  52. We pray that your Holy Spirit will give us hearts and ears to receive you.

  53. The living word of God, the King of kings, the Lord of lords.

  54. That we will not refuse your rule over our lives.

  55. Amen.

  56. Well, there's said a group of Christians in a circle, their Bibles open.

  57. And as God's word does in the book of James, you know, it becomes a mirror.

  58. We see in the word of God another story, another example, or a passage, and it reflects back on us.

  59. We start reading, thinking that this is about Israel, or even about, you know, the villains or the enemies pushing in.

  60. And before we know it, we realize the Bible is speaking about me, my own heart.

  61. And one of those moments in a Bible study, the person who most likely had been a Christian the longest, a godly lady,

  62. made the statement that my heart is still so full of sin every single day.

  63. And that's what the scripture reveals.

  64. So then every other Christian sitting around this circle has that feeling,

  65. if this godly woman who's walked with the Lord so long still is so aware of all the sin in her heart,

  66. where does that leave the rest of us?

  67. And I'm so glad she had the humility to say that.

  68. That's the same insight that Pastor Robert Murray Machine in the 1800s in Scotland,

  69. he had that same insight.

  70. He said, the seed of every sin known to man is in my heart.

  71. Do you feel that way as a Christian often as well?

  72. So beloved brothers and sisters, beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  73. that's what I need to talk with you about today.

  74. It's those remaining corruptions in your heart and in mine.

  75. Those remaining corruptions in the hearts of God's children.

  76. I see in this passage three cautions for us in one gospel hope.

  77. Here's the first caution.

  78. Hearts with remaining corruptions are prone,

  79. they're bent to take gifts and turn them into idols.

  80. Hearts with remaining corruptions are prone to turn gifts into idols.

  81. Would you look at verse one with me?

  82. Children are a good gift.

  83. Amen?

  84. Psalm 127.3 says,

  85. Children are a heritage from the Lord.

  86. What a blessing.

  87. And judges are a good gift.

  88. Proverbs 21.15 says,

  89. When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous.

  90. But Israel was not Samuel's nation.

  91. Israel was God's nation.

  92. And who is it that can put an authority over his own people?

  93. Only God, whose people they are.

  94. Samuel was forcing a dynasty.

  95. Children, a dynasty is when one king or person in a power

  96. wants to make their own children be their successors.

  97. Nepotism.

  98. God will rule his own people the way that he alone chooses.

  99. We have this insight next in verse two,

  100. which I think is very significant.

  101. I know it is.

  102. It's in God's word.

  103. Would you look at verse two?

  104. The name of the firstborn was Joel.

  105. The name of his second was Abijah.

  106. And they were judges in Beersheba.

  107. Okay, so now we got to do a little research to find out in the Hebrew,

  108. what do these two names mean?

  109. And where is Beersheba?

  110. Well, let's start with the names first.

  111. When these two sons are born, Samuel, a man of God,

  112. blessed them with wonderful names.

  113. Joel, you hear the last two letters is L.

  114. We know L means God.

  115. So Joel means Yahweh is God.

  116. Abijah means my father is Yahweh.

  117. Most likely these give us an autobiographical insight into Samuel.

  118. Remember, he grew up away from his biological father.

  119. He had to call Eli the priest his father.

  120. Eli called him his son.

  121. And he's growing up in the house of the Lord around the tabernacle at Shiloh.

  122. And this is what he wants for his own children more than anything else,

  123. that Yahweh would be their God

  124. and that their father would be Yahweh himself.

  125. This is his prayer for his sons.

  126. But the problem with Samuel's sons was not their names,

  127. but that their lives did not match up to these wonderful names.

  128. Most likely with the best of intentions,

  129. we could say Samuel was dressing up his sons with a name.

  130. It's something put on them,

  131. not something that they had to earn.

  132. We read in verse 3,

  133. Samuel's sons did not walk in his ways.

  134. What do you mean by that?

  135. Well, they turned aside after dishonest gain.

  136. They took bribes and they perverted justice.

  137. You see, their lives did not match their names.

  138. Yahweh was obviously not their God.

  139. Yahweh, the Lord of hosts, was obviously not their father.

  140. Maybe this is why Samuel makes them judges way down in Beersheba.

  141. This is a southernmost isolated part of the country.

  142. When we can't dress up those things that we've made into an idol enough,

  143. the remaining sin in our hearts tries next to cover them up.

  144. Maybe Samuel sent them to judge way down in Beersheba,

  145. south out of the way,

  146. to try to hide them with obscurity

  147. and minimize the damage of their corruption.

  148. So do you see even from these first three verses

  149. how even Samuel,

  150. this great prophet of the Lord,

  151. this judge that the Lord appointed,

  152. the Lord didn't let a word of Samuel fall to the ground.

  153. He established him.

  154. Even Samuel had remaining corruptions in his heart.

  155. Do you agree?

  156. You see these?

  157. We need to beware of the hurtful result of idols.

  158. in our own hearts.

  159. When we turn a gift into something

  160. that we are elevated beyond its proper place in creation.

  161. Look at the results in this case.

  162. Lost the trust of God's people.

  163. He undermined his own authority as their judge.

  164. And he stirred up the remaining corruptions in the hearts of others.

  165. He became the occasion for the nation of Israel

  166. to rebel ultimately against God.

  167. Beware the hurtful results of our own idols.

  168. In 1 John 1, 8, we read that if we say we have no sin,

  169. we deceive ourselves.

  170. You and I still have sin remaining in our hearts also,

  171. just like Samuel, don't we?

  172. Romans 7, 19,

  173. even the Apostle Paul cries this out.

  174. Oh, wretched man that I am,

  175. the good that I will to do,

  176. I do not do,

  177. but the evil I will not to do,

  178. that I practice.

  179. In 1 Timothy 6, 9,

  180. God's people are warned that the lusts

  181. that remain in our flesh

  182. make us fall into many temptations

  183. and ensnare even Christians.

  184. We know that sanctification,

  185. to be made more like Christ,

  186. we know that that's God's power, right?

  187. In other words,

  188. you ask Samuel or Paul or Timothy,

  189. who is it?

  190. Whose power and energy

  191. made you more like Christ now

  192. than you were 20 years ago?

  193. Every Christian will always say,

  194. it was God's power working in me.

  195. God gets all the glory for my sanctification, right?

  196. But then the question remains,

  197. well, why does God allow men like Samuel and Paul

  198. and you and me to fall back into our sin?

  199. It's all His power to sanctify me.

  200. Why is He doing this now to let me,

  201. let go just enough for me to drop down

  202. and reveal these corruptions in my heart?

  203. What are God's purposes in doing this?

  204. This is a great question.

  205. It's one that every Christian needs to wrestle with

  206. and which is,

  207. we're not the first Christians to ask this question.

  208. I love this answer

  209. from the Confession of Faith,

  210. chapter 5, paragraph 5.

  211. And this chapter is on the providence of God,

  212. His sovereignty over every little detail

  213. of your life and mine.

  214. Listen to this.

  215. The most wise, righteous, and gracious God

  216. does oftentimes leave for a season

  217. His own children to manifold temptations

  218. and the corruptions of their own hearts.

  219. And here are seven purposes identified.

  220. Number one, why?

  221. To chastise them for their former sins.

  222. Number two, to discover unto them

  223. the hidden strength of corruption

  224. and deceitfulness in their hearts.

  225. Number three, that they may be humbled.

  226. Number four, to make them more watchful

  227. against all future occasions for sin.

  228. Number five, for other just and holy ends,

  229. so that whatsoever befalls any of God's elect

  230. is by His appointment.

  231. Reason six, for His glory.

  232. And reason seven, for our good.

  233. So hearts with remaining corruptions

  234. like yours and ours,

  235. we need to beware.

  236. They will be prone always

  237. until that final breath

  238. to turn gifts into idols.

  239. Here's the second caution from this passage.

  240. Hearts with remaining corruptions

  241. are prone to disguise idolatry with reason.

  242. Hearts with remaining corruptions

  243. are prone to disguise idolatry with reason.

  244. Well, in the first three verses,

  245. the hidden corruptions in the heart of godly Samuel

  246. have been discovered.

  247. Next, Israel's idols will surface.

  248. Look at verse four.

  249. Then, in other words,

  250. when the sin of Samuel's sons

  251. had become so obvious to enough people,

  252. we read in verse four

  253. that all the elders of Israel

  254. gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.

  255. Here are the 12 tribes represented by elders.

  256. It's basically a tribal confederacy.

  257. And that's how bad things got.

  258. They're looking at the succession plan.

  259. Samuel is getting old

  260. and his sons are not ones

  261. we as a confederation of tribes

  262. want to have to submit to anymore.

  263. These guys are awful.

  264. In verse five,

  265. they said to Samuel,

  266. look, you are old

  267. and your sons do not walk in your ways.

  268. Notice how street smart people

  269. always wait for the best time

  270. to get what they want.

  271. The time is right now.

  272. Strike while the metal is hot.

  273. What we find out is that their hearts

  274. had already rejected God

  275. as their king.

  276. So now they're just waiting

  277. for this man of God to show weakness

  278. and they can pounce.

  279. In verse five,

  280. they say,

  281. now make us a king

  282. to judge us

  283. like all the nations.

  284. Every time they request

  285. for Samuel to make a king for them,

  286. it's attached to that desire

  287. to be like all the other nations.

  288. But notice how this,

  289. this is their heart,

  290. rejected God,

  291. want to be like all the other nations.

  292. There's the idol.

  293. Notice how they try to disguise it

  294. in a reasonable way.

  295. It is reasonable

  296. because number one,

  297. Samuel was old.

  298. No one could deny that.

  299. And a leadership vacuum

  300. would jeopardize the stability

  301. of the whole nation.

  302. So using our own reason,

  303. a king would offer them

  304. a strong and stable

  305. and predictable

  306. center of political authority.

  307. That would make sense

  308. for these tribes.

  309. And this seems more rational

  310. than having to show

  311. all the other neighbors

  312. we don't even have a king.

  313. Our king is in heaven

  314. and he's unseen.

  315. No one's going to believe that.

  316. And what's going to keep them

  317. from invading

  318. and taking our land

  319. and making us slaves?

  320. Israel appeared

  321. to their neighbors

  322. as politically chaotic,

  323. primitive,

  324. and frankly,

  325. it would have been embarrassing

  326. to have to tell people

  327. this is our nation.

  328. This is what we do.

  329. It's not the first time

  330. that this desire came up

  331. for God's people.

  332. In the book right before this one,

  333. chronologically,

  334. it's Judges.

  335. In Judges chapter 8,

    Judges 8:23

  336. verse 23,

  337. see Gideon,

  338. that great man,

  339. the judge that the Lord

  340. used to deliver them

  341. from the Philistines.

  342. They wanted to make

  343. his son a king

  344. and make him a king.

  345. And he says,

  346. I will not rule over you

  347. and my son will not

  348. rule over you.

  349. The Lord will rule over you.

  350. Gideon pushed off

  351. this desire to be like

  352. all the other nations

  353. before.

  354. What's happened again now?

  355. Another generation rises up.

  356. How quickly they forget.

  357. And they stopped singing,

  358. so to speak,

  359. as we did,

  360. under the shadow

  361. of your throne, God,

  362. your saints have dwelt secure.

  363. We run this same risk.

  364. If we forget that

  365. the Lord of hosts,

  366. our God,

  367. He was our help

  368. in ages past,

  369. and then we will lose

  370. the hope that He will be

  371. our help

  372. in years to come.

  373. And so Samuel,

  374. in verse 6,

  375. gets offended.

  376. He thinks this is wrong.

  377. And for all of his shortcomings,

  378. now this should encourage you

  379. and me,

  380. for all of Samuel's

  381. shortcomings,

  382. as a father

  383. and as a leader,

  384. he did the right thing next.

  385. Look what Samuel does next

  386. in verse 6.

  387. Samuel prayed

  388. to the Lord.

  389. In verse 7,

  390. the Lord said,

  391. they have not rejected you,

  392. but they have rejected

  393. me,

  394. that I should not reign

  395. over them.

  396. Here's why this can

  397. encourage you and me.

  398. Parents,

  399. grandparents,

  400. brothers and sisters,

  401. you who have

  402. had the opportunity

  403. to witness

  404. and share the gospel

  405. with someone,

  406. or even to

  407. disciple someone

  408. and lead them,

  409. only to find out

  410. years later

  411. they reject

  412. this path,

  413. this narrow way

  414. that you're trying

  415. to walk on.

  416. The Lord stands by you

  417. like He stood by Samuel.

  418. And the Lord says,

  419. look,

  420. if they were to believe

  421. and follow,

  422. that would not have been

  423. your doing, Samuel,

  424. you're my instrument.

  425. Because they've turned away,

  426. they've not rejected you,

  427. they've rejected me.

  428. And so what we do

  429. is we feel the burden

  430. like Samuel,

  431. we take it to the Lord

  432. in prayer,

  433. and we know that

  434. this is the Lord's work.

  435. The only thing we can do

  436. is pray,

  437. and we trust it to Him.

  438. The Lord stands beside you.

  439. The Lord reminds you

  440. in verse 7,

  441. they have not rejected you,

  442. they have rejected me,

  443. that I should not

  444. reign over them.

  445. That's what idolatry means.

  446. It's to reject

  447. God's rule

  448. over your life

  449. and mine.

  450. And we're just like

  451. the Israelites.

  452. We try to rationalize it.

  453. We can't outsmart God.

  454. He calls it out.

  455. He says,

  456. you have rejected me.

  457. He says to them

  458. in verse 8,

  459. this is just as idolatrous

  460. as the first generation

  461. coming out of slavery

  462. in Egypt

  463. and worshiping the golden calf.

  464. In verse 8,

  465. He says,

  466. just like all the evil deeds

  467. you did

  468. after I brought them

  469. out of Egypt,

  470. see,

  471. we can't explain it away.

  472. He says to you and me

  473. and to them,

  474. this is your Baal,

  475. this is your Astaroth,

  476. this is your Dagon,

  477. it's your golden calf.

  478. You have forsaken me

  479. in order to serve

  480. a false God.

  481. I'm the one

  482. who brought you

  483. out of slavery.

  484. I'm not like

  485. any other gods.

  486. I'm holy.

  487. But because our hearts

  488. have remaining corruptions

  489. in them,

  490. we're prone to turn

  491. good gifts

  492. into idols

  493. and then try to disguise

  494. those idols

  495. with reason.

  496. We're reminded

  497. in 1 Corinthians 7,

  498. 23,

  499. church,

  500. Christian.

  501. Just like this

  502. people of old,

  503. you too

  504. were bought

  505. with a price.

  506. The blood of Jesus Christ

  507. Himself.

  508. And so never become

  509. a bondservant

  510. to any creature.

  511. You belong to Him.

  512. He purchased you.

  513. He ransomed you.

  514. You're His.

  515. I bought you,

  516. the Lord says.

  517. And for us

  518. as a congregation,

  519. as a church,

  520. it's the same caution.

  521. We can turn so many

  522. things into an idol

  523. and then dress them up

  524. with our own reason.

  525. What He's asking

  526. the people of Israel

  527. is this.

  528. Why do you want

  529. to be like

  530. all the other nations?

  531. Why do you want

  532. to be a worldly kingdom

  533. when you alone

  534. have been set apart

  535. to be my heavenly kingdom

  536. on earth?

  537. I set you apart

  538. to be holy

  539. as I am holy.

  540. Why would you want

  541. anything less than that?

  542. Well, the third caution

  543. is this.

  544. That hearts with

  545. remaining corruptions

  546. are prone

  547. even to refuse

  548. God's fatherly warnings.

  549. This is how stubborn

  550. we are.

  551. This is how deceitful

  552. and powerful

  553. those corruptions

  554. that remain

  555. in our hearts

  556. are.

  557. Hearts with

  558. remaining corruptions

  559. are prone

  560. to refuse

  561. God's fatherly warnings.

  562. Look at verse 9.

  563. After Samuel prays

  564. and the Lord

  565. hears,

  566. now therefore

  567. heed their voice.

  568. God says,

  569. I'm going to

  570. do what they want.

  571. However,

  572. before that comes,

  573. you shall solemnly

  574. forewarn them

  575. and show them

  576. the behavior

  577. of the king

  578. who will rule

  579. over them.

  580. The Lord God

  581. in his fatherly

  582. love and wisdom,

  583. I know they will

  584. sin,

  585. but I will

  586. solemnly

  587. forewarn them

  588. first.

  589. There are four

  590. cautions

  591. that Samuel

  592. gives them

  593. that describe

  594. bondage to a king,

  595. even one from

  596. their own nation.

  597. And they're all

  598. marked out by

  599. these words,

  600. he will take.

  601. First,

  602. he will take

  603. your sons,

  604. verse 11.

  605. Verse 13,

  606. he will take

  607. your daughters.

  608. Verse 14,

  609. he will take

  610. the best

  611. of your fields

  612. and vineyards

  613. and olive groves.

  614. And fourth,

  615. verse 17,

  616. he will take

  617. a tenth

  618. of your sheep.

  619. But notice

  620. the bent of their hearts,

  621. they're prone

  622. to refuse

  623. this fatherly

  624. warning.

  625. We read in 19,

  626. nevertheless,

  627. the people refused

  628. to obey

  629. the voice of

  630. Samuel who spoke

  631. for God.

  632. And they said,

  633. no,

  634. we will have

  635. a king over us,

  636. verse 20,

  637. that we may be

  638. like all the other

  639. nations,

  640. and that our king

  641. may judge us

  642. and go out

  643. before us

  644. and fight

  645. our battles.

  646. Notice the

  647. possessive there.

  648. The possessive

  649. determinative,

  650. who is all this

  651. for?

  652. They say,

  653. go before us,

  654. fight our battles.

  655. In verse 11,

  656. Samuel had used

  657. the possessive

  658. to point to the king.

  659. The king's going

  660. to make it all

  661. about his agenda.

  662. Look at verse 11.

  663. He'll make your sons

  664. be his infantry.

  665. Verse 12,

  666. he'll make them

  667. plow his ground

  668. and reap his harvest

  669. and make his weapons

  670. of war

  671. and equipment

  672. for his chariots.

  673. Verse 16,

  674. he will put them

  675. to his work.

  676. See,

  677. if you get a king

  678. and you want to be

  679. like all the other nations,

  680. you're going to have

  681. a repeat

  682. of slavery

  683. in Egypt.

  684. The king of Israel

  685. is described

  686. using

  687. the language

  688. of bondage

  689. in Egypt.

  690. He's a pharaoh figure.

  691. In verse 17,

  692. it says it,

  693. you will be his slaves.

  694. Verse 18,

  695. you will cry out

  696. in the day.

  697. Now Samuel changes it

  698. to show them

  699. you'll be enslaved again.

  700. He says in verse 18,

  701. because of your king,

  702. whom you have chosen

  703. for yourselves

  704. and the Lord

  705. will not hear you

  706. on that day.

  707. When we choose

  708. the idol,

  709. we choose that thing

  710. we will serve above God

  711. or love more than God

  712. and his kingdom.

  713. We have no one else

  714. to blame,

  715. do we?

  716. And when God warns us,

  717. fatherly,

  718. loving warnings,

  719. we still rebel

  720. against him

  721. and refuse him.

  722. There's no one else

  723. to blame.

  724. We become enslaved

  725. to the thing

  726. we chose

  727. instead of God.

  728. In verse 19,

  729. nevertheless,

  730. the people refused

  731. to obey

  732. the voice

  733. of Samuel.

  734. And there it is again,

  735. we will have

  736. a king over us

  737. linked with

  738. that we may be

  739. like all

  740. the other nations.

  741. See,

  742. they own it.

  743. Verse 20,

  744. that our king

  745. may judge us

  746. and go out

  747. before us

  748. to fight

  749. our battles.

  750. This is what

  751. we are choosing.

  752. Think about how

  753. the Lord Jesus

  754. turns us upside down

  755. in the pattern

  756. of his true kingdom

  757. that men in the flesh

  758. refuse to see.

  759. And his disciples

  760. expected this type

  761. of king

  762. just like Israel

  763. has expected

  764. all along.

  765. And Jesus says,

  766. disciples,

  767. when you pray,

  768. pray like this.

  769. our Father

  770. who art in heaven,

  771. hallowed be your name.

  772. Your kingdom come.

  773. Your will be done

  774. on earth

  775. as it is in heaven.

  776. It teaches them

  777. utter dependence.

  778. Well,

  779. that Lord's prayer

  780. is corrupted.

  781. We could paraphrase

  782. what we just read

  783. and the attitude

  784. of his people here

  785. with their remaining sin.

  786. It's like they're praying,

  787. oh, Samuel,

  788. our old father

  789. who art on earth,

  790. disgraced is your name.

  791. May our kingdom come.

  792. May our will be done

  793. on earth

  794. as if there were

  795. no heaven.

  796. Your sons have sinned

  797. against us,

  798. so don't have us

  799. ask God

  800. to forgive us

  801. our sins against him.

  802. Give us this day

  803. what all the other nations

  804. had

  805. and lead us not

  806. anymore at all.

  807. We'll deliver

  808. ourselves from evil.

  809. We want a king.

  810. We can see.

  811. Footnote.

  812. If possible,

  813. please make him

  814. noble, tall, and handsome.

  815. And he'll lead us

  816. to fight our own battles

  817. for ours is the kingdom.

  818. Ours is the power.

  819. Ours is the glory forever.

  820. Amen.

  821. The loving Father in heaven

  822. needed his people

  823. to discover

  824. for themselves

  825. the hidden strength

  826. of corruption

  827. and deceitfulness

  828. that's still in their hearts.

  829. what they're saying is,

  830. Lord,

  831. we don't want you

  832. going before us

  833. into battle anymore.

  834. They're asking for this

  835. in a time of peace

  836. when all the Philistines

  837. have already been pushed back

  838. by the mighty hand of God.

  839. They're rejecting

  840. God's way of fighting.

  841. Remember how God fought

  842. right before this?

  843. Samuel started to pray.

  844. He put a whole lamb there

  845. and burnt it

  846. as a sin offering.

  847. And they said,

  848. please don't stop praying.

  849. And as the smoke

  850. is going up

  851. as a pleasing aroma

  852. to the Lord,

  853. the Philistines are

  854. coming in battle array

  855. against them.

  856. And the Lord sends

  857. thunder

  858. like lightning

  859. as if it were

  860. an artillery

  861. of arrows

  862. upon the Philistines

  863. and pushes back

  864. all the land

  865. that they had ever taken.

  866. That's what they're rejecting.

  867. They don't want to

  868. go to war

  869. God's way anymore.

  870. They want to be

  871. like the world,

  872. like the defeated Philistines

  873. instead.

  874. They want to map out

  875. their own plans.

  876. They want to do

  877. the work themselves.

  878. They want to try to expand

  879. this kingdom on earth

  880. by fighting

  881. their own battles

  882. with a champion

  883. out in front of them.

  884. A charismatic,

  885. strong king

  886. from among them

  887. just like all

  888. the other nations.

  889. Church,

  890. we need to reflect

  891. on this as well.

  892. what type of kingdom

  893. are we here for?

  894. Sadly,

  895. some of you

  896. have experienced

  897. this same temptation

  898. gripping an entire church.

  899. What we need to do,

  900. they'll say,

  901. is hire consultants.

  902. We need to get people

  903. in with charismatic

  904. personalities.

  905. We need a five-year

  906. business plan.

  907. We need to use

  908. sales tactics.

  909. We need to think

  910. of some more gimmicks.

  911. We need to seem

  912. more respectable

  913. to the world.

  914. We don't want

  915. the lightning

  916. and the thunder

  917. that only God

  918. can bring.

  919. With God's help,

  920. may that always be

  921. our prayer as a church.

  922. Lord, we don't want

  923. anything of this world.

  924. We want you,

  925. your presence

  926. with your people

  927. fighting on our behalf.

  928. What we do

  929. is we pray.

  930. We want the lightning

  931. of the Spirit of God

  932. in the souls

  933. of men.

  934. We want the thunder

  935. of God's voice

  936. through broken vessels,

  937. earthen vessels.

  938. In our weakness,

  939. He has made great.

  940. But our hearts

  941. with remaining corruptions

  942. are prone to refuse

  943. God's fatherly warnings.

  944. Well, there are

  945. the three cautions.

  946. I know this is heavy.

  947. It's soul-searching

  948. for me as well.

  949. Here's our one

  950. gospel hope.

  951. God uses

  952. the remaining corruptions

  953. in His children's hearts

  954. for His purposes.

  955. God uses

  956. those remaining corruptions

  957. in your hearts

  958. and mine

  959. for His own purposes.

  960. What a great hope

  961. we have.

  962. Would you look

  963. at verse 21?

  964. Samuel heard

  965. all the words

  966. of the people.

  967. Picture how painful

  968. that would have been

  969. for him to sit there.

  970. accused by Satan

  971. the whole time,

  972. I'm sure.

  973. This is all your fault.

  974. You loser.

  975. You sinner.

  976. Look what you've done.

  977. You've ruined

  978. all the good work

  979. God did.

  980. Sitting there,

  981. hearing all the words

  982. of these representatives

  983. of the whole nation.

  984. And then Samuel

  985. does what he does.

  986. He goes back

  987. to the Lord

  988. in prayer.

  989. And he repeats it all

  990. in the hearing

  991. of the Lord.

  992. In verse 22,

  993. the Lord said to Samuel,

  994. heed their voice

  995. and make them

  996. a king.

  997. C.S. Lewis said,

  998. there are only two kinds

  999. of people

  1000. in the end.

1001. Those who say to God,

  1002. thy will be done

  1003. and those to whom

1004. God says in the end,

  1005. thy will be done.

1006. all that are in hell,

  1007. choose it.

  1008. Someone pointed out

  1009. the most severe

  1010. fatherly discipline

  1011. at times

  1012. may be God

  1013. giving us

  1014. exactly

  1015. what we ask for.

  1016. Israel's elders

  1017. had a God-created

  1018. desire.

  1019. desire.

  1020. We want a king

  1021. who is a man

  1022. like us.

  1023. But what God

  1024. would reveal to them

  1025. through the rest

  1026. of redemptive history

  1027. is that you need

  1028. a king

  1029. who is way more

  1030. holy,

  1031. more righteous,

  1032. more generous,

  1033. more good

  1034. than any man

  1035. born of Adam

  1036. can be.

  1037. You and I,

  1038. we need a king

  1039. more powerful

  1040. than the corruptions

  1041. of our own hearts.

  1042. the Israelites

  1043. thought what they

  1044. needed was Goliath.

  1045. This is what

1046. it's teeing it up for.

  1047. Remember,

  1048. like the normal

  1049. pattern of a

  1050. military confrontation

  1051. would be this.

  1052. First,

  1053. from a distance,

  1054. artillery,

  1055. arrows flying

  1056. back and forth.

  1057. The next round,

  1058. you send out

  1059. all the poor people,

  1060. the peasants

  1061. that are the infantry,

  1062. foot soldiers,

1063. to thin each other out.

  1064. Last comes

  1065. the cavalry,

  1066. the class that has

  1067. horses and land,

  1068. and the cavalry

  1069. comes in and

  1070. cleans up.

  1071. And then finally

  1072. would come the king.

1073. The king has to be

  1074. protected just like

  1075. on a chess board.

1076. Once you get the king,

  1077. it's over.

  1078. But most likely,

  1079. this setup is

  1080. preparing for

  1081. 1 Samuel chapter 17,

    1 Samuel 17 chapter mention

  1082. which is a great

  1083. confrontation of

  1084. two federal heads.

  1085. Rather than this

  1086. great slaughter

  1087. of all these nations,

  1088. infantry and cavalry

  1089. and artillery,

  1090. all of that,

  1091. doing so much damage

  1092. to both nations,

  1093. how about we just

1094. send out a federal head?

  1095. You send your

  1096. best champion,

  1097. we'll send out

  1098. our best champion.

1099. Let the two of them

  1100. fight.

  1101. The loser

  1102. becomes the slave

  1103. to the entire nation.

  1104. So Israel's wanting

  1105. to play the game

  1106. on the terms

  1107. of the enemy.

  1108. And they're asking

  1109. for a king

1110. that could go do that

  1111. on their behalf

  1112. so that they don't

  1113. have the threat

  1114. of becoming a slave

  1115. and maybe get ambitious.

  1116. Maybe our champion

  1117. could win

  1118. and we get to

1119. take them as our slaves

  1120. and expand the land

  1121. a bit more.

  1122. You see how God

  1123. handles the remaining

  1124. corruptions in our hearts?

  1125. It's to show

  1126. there is one champion

  1127. who can go out

1128. in front of the army.

  1129. He's the one

  1130. who will crush

  1131. the head

  1132. of the greatest foe

  1133. and he will take

  1134. captivity captive.

  1135. And he will purchase

  1136. on behalf of his

  1137. whole nation

  1138. the peace and stability

  1139. and kingdom

  1140. and abundance

1141. that only he can accomplish.

  1142. He alone can be

  1143. that representative

  1144. federal head,

  1145. the champion

  1146. of his nation.

  1147. Our Lord Jesus Christ,

  1148. he took on flesh.

  1149. He became our representative,

  1150. our federal head.

  1151. He lived the life

  1152. of righteousness

  1153. that would not give

  1154. anyone anything

  1155. to point to

1156. to say there's no reason

1157. I should submit to you.

  1158. He's perfectly holy

  1159. and righteous

  1160. and sinless.

  1161. You can submit

  1162. to his rule.

  1163. He's proved it

  1164. with his life.

  1165. And he crushed

  1166. the serpent's head

  1167. on the cross.

  1168. He defeated the enemy.

  1169. Romans 6.14 says,

  1170. sin shall have

  1171. no more dominion

  1172. over you

  1173. because Jesus Christ

  1174. rules over

  1175. his people.

  1176. Those remaining

  1177. corruptions

  1178. in your heart

  1179. and mine,

  1180. they are powerless.

  1181. Christ has disarmed them.

  1182. We need

  1183. Jesus.

  1184. We need the Lord

  1185. of lords,

  1186. the King of kings

  1187. to be the ruler

  1188. of our hearts.

  1189. Only he can be

  1190. the one to fulfill

  1191. these desires

  1192. and to protect us

  1193. even from ourselves.

  1194. Because the sin

  1195. that remains

  1196. in our hearts

  1197. is so deceiving

  1198. and so self-justifying.

1199. We need to be ruled

  1200. by Jesus

  1201. because he alone

  1202. understands

  1203. our temptations.

  1204. And he alone

  1205. is wise enough

  1206. to disarm them.

  1207. He is more persuasive

  1208. than the sin

  1209. that remains

  1210. in your heart

  1211. and mine.

  1212. Our confession

  1213. states that

  1214. one of the reasons

  1215. God exposes our sin

  1216. even after we're

  1217. a Christian

  1218. following him.

  1219. It's to raise

  1220. us

  1221. to a more close

  1222. and constant

  1223. dependence

  1224. and support

  1225. on Jesus Christ.

  1226. Do you need that?

  1227. I know I do.

  1228. Jesus said

  1229. in John 15

  1230. for abide

  1231. in me

  1232. and I in you.

  1233. The branch

  1234. cannot bear fruit

  1235. by itself.

  1236. He says apart

  1237. from me

  1238. you can do

  1239. not even a little.

  1240. You can do

  1241. nothing apart

  1242. from me

  1243. unless

  1244. you

  1245. abide in Jesus

  1246. the vine

  1247. neither

  1248. can you do

  1249. anything.

  1250. You can have

  1251. confidence

  1252. that Christ

  1253. will rule

  1254. and will continue

  1255. to conquer

  1256. over those

  1257. remaining corruptions

  1258. in your heart

  1259. and mine.

  1260. I won't get tired

  1261. of using this

  1262. because I need

  1263. to get this

  1264. into my soul.

  1265. John Flavel

  1266. Christ is no

  1267. half savior.

  1268. This is why

  1269. you can have

  1270. this confidence.

  1271. Did Christ

  1272. finish his work

  1273. for us?

  1274. Did he church?

  1275. Yes and amen.

  1276. Then there can be

  1277. no doubt

  1278. that he will

  1279. also finish

  1280. his work

  1281. in us.

  1282. If he began

  1283. it

  1284. then no doubt

  1285. he will finish

  1286. it.

  1287. Philippians 1.6

  1288. Jesus Christ

  1289. is not only

  1290. called the author

  1291. but also

  1292. the finisher

  1293. of our faith.

  1294. Hebrews 12.2

  1295. Still Flavel

  1296. so dear believers

  1297. be not discouraged

  1298. at defects

  1299. and imperfections

  1300. in yourselves.

  1301. Be humbled

  1302. for them

  1303. but not

  1304. dejected.

  1305. Be convicted

  1306. but not

  1307. depressed.

  1308. Always desire

  1309. more holiness

  1310. but never

  1311. become hopeless.

  1312. This is

  1313. Christ's work

  1314. as well as that.

  1315. That work

  1316. was finished

  1317. and so

  1318. will this

  1319. be.

  1320. Preach this

  1321. gospel

  1322. to yourself.

  1323. God uses

  1324. those remaining

  1325. corruptions

  1326. in his

  1327. children's

  1328. hearts

  1329. for his

  1330. purpose

  1331. to make

  1332. us more

  1333. dependent

  1334. on him.

  1335. And so

  1336. we sing

  1337. and we preach

  1338. to ourselves

  1339. and to one

  1340. another

  1341. my hope

  1342. is built

  1343. on nothing

  1344. less

  1345. than Jesus'

  1346. blood

  1347. and righteousness.

  1348. I dare

  1349. not trust

  1350. the sweetest

  1351. frame

  1352. but wholly

  1353. lean

  1354. on Jesus'

  1355. name.

  1356. His oath,

  1357. his covenant,

  1358. his blood

  1359. supports me

  1360. in the

  1361. whelming flood

  1362. when all

  1363. around my

  1364. soul gives

  1365. way,

  1366. even inside

  1367. my soul.

  1368. He then

  1369. is all

  1370. my hope

  1371. and stay.

  1372. Amen?

  1373. Amen.

  1374. Let's pray

  1375. in response

  1376. and thank

  1377. our Lord

  1378. for his

  1379. great salvation.

  1380. Thank
