    1 Samuel 10 chapter mention

  13. 1 Samuel said to all the people,

  14. 1 Samuel,

  15. And all of the people shouted, Long live the king.

  16. Then Samuel told the people the rights and the duties of a kingship, and he wrote them in a book and laid it up before the Lord.

  17. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his own home.

  18. Saul also went to his home at Gibeah, and with him went men of valor whose hearts God had touched.

  19. But some of the worthless fellows said, How can this man save us?

  20. And they despised him and brought him no present, but he held his peace.

  21. The word of God for the people of God.

  22. Thanks be to God. You may be seated.

  23. Would you pray with me?

  24. Lord, you know your people.

  25. You know what's in the heart of every person.

  26. And I ask, Lord, that because you are our good and gracious king, please minister, Father, as I do my best to interpret and apply your word, this passage that Ralph just read for us.

  27. In such a way, Lord, that brings you glory and you alone, and that builds up your people.

  28. That we can present everyone mature within your kingdom by your power.

  29. We thank you, Lord, that we have King Jesus so clearly given to us in all of Scripture.

  30. And we thank you, Lord, that the light of King Jesus shines back on ancient passages like this.

  31. And it becomes useful even for our instruction and for our building up.

  32. But only if you will do this, Lord, by your power.

  33. And so that's what we ask for your glory and our good.

  34. Amen.

  35. Amen.

  36. Amen.

  37. Amen.

  38. Well, picture yourself in London.

  39. Someone gave you tickets to watch the national football or soccer team at Wembley Stadium.

  40. 70,000 people packing the stadium, wearing the jersey that has the three lions on the chest.

  41. and here come the best athletes from the whole nation

  42. and they line up.

  43. And then you just hear like one voice,

  44. all the people singing,

  45. long live our noble king.

  46. Scatter his enemies and make them fall.

  47. Confound their politics.

  48. Frustrate their knavish tricks.

  49. Send him victorious, happy and glorious.

  50. Long to reign over us.

  51. God save the king.

  52. That British national anthem was written in 1740s.

  53. I looked it up.

  54. When was the first international soccer match played?

  55. Not till about 130 years later, 1870s.

  56. So these national anthems of countries like ours

  57. and of England, of around the world,

  58. they were not written for sports.

  59. They're written for war,

  60. to expand the empire,

  61. to provide security for the nation.

  62. Did you catch that line in our passage today?

  63. Would you look at chapter 10, verse 24?

  64. We're given this very detailed account of how Saul is finally put in front of the people

  65. and the response of the nation is,

  66. Long live the king.

  67. Or may the king live forever.

  68. And ancient Israel is just like our country today.

  69. This doesn't change.

  70. What people want from their leaders, from their government,

  71. is stability and security.

  72. And it's very easy,

  73. when we don't have those things,

  74. to put our hopes in a man,

  75. a ruler, a king,

  76. who could maybe bring that to us.

  77. And that's what's going on in this story today.

  78. Because what that phrase says is this,

  79. as long as this king lives,

  80. the kingdom will continue like this, secure.

  81. So may the king live forever.

  82. May the way it's going now be locked in forever.

  83. May the king never die.

  84. Beloved congregation of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  85. I want to show you,

  86. with this longing for security,

  87. what all it takes for a kingdom to enjoy that.

  88. More specifically for us,

  89. in Christ's kingdom,

  90. what does it take for you and I to enjoy security?

  91. Well first, it's this,

  92. for God's people to enjoy security,

  93. God must grant a king federal headship

  94. over his own kingdom.

  95. For God's people to enjoy security,

  96. God must grant a king federal headship

  97. over his kingdom.

  98. When evil men tried to grab power for themselves

  99. in the book of Judges,

  100. it failed.

  101. The Lord wouldn't put up with it.

  102. When evil men tried to bring in idols

  103. into God's kingdom,

  104. God would destroy them.

  105. Even Samuel,

  106. who loved the Lord and feared him,

  107. when he tried to set up nepotism,

  108. that his own sons would become the next judges,

  109. it failed.

  110. God is showing his people,

  111. I'm the one who must grant authority.

  112. And we see that the Lord granted to Saul

  113. everything he needed

  114. to fulfill this charge

  115. that God had put on him.

  116. I see and saw

  117. all that it would take

  118. for a man to be a representative,

  119. a federal head,

  120. one figurehead over the entire kingdom.

  121. A shadow of all the offices

  122. God would give to the one man,

  123. Jesus Christ.

  124. First, the Lord took Saul.

  125. If you remember last week, chapter 9,

  126. Saul is embarrassingly unqualified,

  127. and God elevated him.

  128. Would you look even at the very end

  129. of chapter 9?

  130. Notice how every time Saul is moving,

  131. and toward the end of the chapter,

  132. he's going upward.

  133. He goes up to Ramah.

  134. Then he goes up to the feast.

  135. And then at the very end,

  136. he even goes up on top of the house.

  137. The Lord is elevating Saul

  138. out of nothing,

  139. bringing him up.

  140. And that's symbolic

  141. to what God is about to do

  142. in chapter 10.

  143. Now in verse 1 of chapter 10,

  144. Samuel took a flask of oil

  145. and poured it over Saul's head

  146. and kissed him and said,

  147. this is not because the Lord has,

  148. is this not because the Lord

  149. has anointed you commander?

  150. Now he reminds him

  151. over his inheritance.

  152. So who is Saul to rule over?

  153. God's inheritance.

  154. It's God's kingdom.

  155. God's the one who has to appoint

  156. and delegate this authority

  157. to a man,

  158. a federal head,

  159. over God's own kingdom.

  160. What a scene this would be.

  161. We're on the top

  162. of these mountain peaks.

  163. And here's a giant of a man

  164. between LeBron James

  165. and Shaquille O'Neal most likely.

  166. And here's old Samuel.

  167. He's a Nazarite,

  168. so he's got long hair

  169. and beard never cut.

  170. This man likely kneels down.

  171. They're going to do

  172. a private anointing ceremony

  173. following God's instruction.

  174. Pours the oil over him.

  175. Says this is because

  176. the Lord is anointing you

  177. to rule over God's inheritance.

  178. Picture the weight of that charge

  179. on this man.

  180. Well next,

  181. the Lord took this anointed man

  182. and notice what he does.

  183. In verses 3 and 4,

  184. there are these men

  185. going up to God,

  186. going up to worship.

  187. And notice the three things

  188. that these people are carrying.

  189. goats,

  190. bread,

  191. and wine.

  192. And it's the bread

  193. of the communion

  194. that they're going to give

  195. to Saul.

  196. What are you going to do

  197. with the goats

  198. when you go up

  199. to worship God?

  200. There's your blood sacrifice.

  201. And after a blood sacrifice,

  202. you're going to enjoy

  203. the peace,

  204. the peace sacrifice,

  205. where you're going to have,

  206. you get to eat the meat now.

  207. The sins have been atoned for.

  208. The burnt sacrifice is done.

  209. Now we get to enjoy

  210. this delicious feast with God.

  211. There's meat and there's bread

  212. and there's the fruit of the vine.

  213. But they,

  214. he says,

  215. these men are going to give you

  216. the bread.

  217. Well,

  218. in the ceremonial law

  219. in Leviticus,

  220. the bread is set apart

  221. for the priests.

  222. But,

  223. there's also in the law

  224. provision where

  225. it can be legally shared.

  226. Remember when David comes

  227. and the priest gives him bread.

  228. And it was legal.

  229. And the Lord even reminds

  230. the law keepers of this.

  231. And so,

  232. here's this man

  233. anointed to be king.

  234. There's the kingly office.

  235. being given the bread,

  236. the portion of the priest.

  237. There's the priestly office.

  238. Shadowy symbolized there.

  239. Well,

  240. what about the office of prophet?

  241. The Lord took this anointed king

  242. with the priestly bread.

  243. And in verse 6,

  244. look at what he says.

  245. The spirit of the Lord

  246. will come upon you

  247. and you will prophesy

  248. with them.

  249. And you will be turned

  250. into another man.

  251. All three offices

  252. put onto Saul,

  253. this one man,

  254. king,

  255. priest,

  256. prophet,

  257. the anointing.

  258. This is God's inheritance.

  259. You're the federal head.

  260. Lift it up.

  261. Will this man be able

  262. to bear under the weight

  263. of this charge?

  264. Will he be able to do

  265. what is required

  266. to secure the peace

  267. and the kingdom?

  268. I know I sure wouldn't.

  269. I would crumble under that.

  270. Now,

  271. when it says

  272. the spirit will be upon you,

  273. that doesn't necessarily mean

  274. Saul gets a new heart

  275. of regeneration

  276. to believe and follow the Lord.

  277. Because the spirit of God

  278. also made a donkey prophesy.

  279. The spirit of God

  280. made Nebuchadnezzar prophesy.

  281. The spirit of God

  282. takes creatures

  283. and does whatever

  284. God wants to do.

  285. And so that's

  286. important for us to realize

  287. because Saul

  288. is a complex character.

  289. He doesn't stay flat

  290. through all these chapters.

  291. That's all we need to say

  292. about that for now.

  293. The Holy Spirit

  294. operated differently

  295. in the Old Testament

  296. than now

  297. in the church.

  298. Well, next the Lord

  299. took this anointed king

  300. associated with

  301. the priestly rite of bread

  302. who prophesied

  303. speaking God's word

  304. to the people.

  305. What do we mean by prophecy?

  306. It's that.

  307. It's one who speaks

  308. God's word to the people.

  309. And he made him able

  310. to obey.

  311. Look at verse 9.

  312. So it was

  313. when he had turned

  314. his back from Samuel

  315. that God gave him

  316. another heart.

  317. Again,

  318. in this context

  319. for these reasons,

  320. I believe this means

  321. that he had the inward

  322. ability

  323. to do what God

  324. expected of him

  325. as king.

  326. He had a special

  327. God-given ability

  328. to fulfill this office

  329. for which God

  330. anointed him.

  331. I don't necessarily

  332. think it should mean

  333. or we should read

  334. into it

  335. that he's regenerated

  336. or saved

  337. or got a new heart

  338. savingly.

  339. But that God

  340. is not giving him

  341. any excuse

  342. or the people

  343. any excuse

  344. to say that the Lord

  345. sabotaged

  346. the thing they wanted.

  347. God will allow him

  348. to be able to govern.

  349. All right.

  350. So for God's people

  351. to enjoy security,

  352. do you see how

  353. God must grant

  354. a man

  355. federal headship

  356. to represent

  357. God's people,

  358. God's kingdom?

  359. Let's remember this,

  360. that if you and I

  361. have enjoyed

  362. any level of security

  363. in this state

  364. or in this nation,

  365. it's because God

  366. has granted peace.

  367. God steers the hearts

  368. of rulers

  369. like the streams.

  370. God lifts up

  371. and God throws down.

  372. He can do that.

  373. The reason we're to pray

  374. for all civil magistrates

  375. in every state,

  376. no matter what their views are,

  377. even the views that

  378. disagree with God's kingdom,

  379. we still pray for them

  380. because God put them there

  381. in his providence

  382. and his big plan.

  383. Now,

  384. with God's moral law

  385. inside his people,

  386. we should not like laws

  387. that contradict

  388. God's moral law.

  389. We can't.

  390. Not if the Holy Spirit

  391. lives in us.

  392. But we can still pray

  393. for these rulers

  394. who are dark.

  395. They're in darkness.

  396. They're deceived

  397. by the enemy

  398. and we need to pray

  399. that God will

  400. give us peace

  401. despite those laws.

  402. Well,

  403. the second observation

  404. about how

  405. God secures

  406. peace

  407. in his kingdom

  408. for his people

  409. is this.

  410. In order for God's people

  411. to enjoy security,

  412. the king

  413. must not just be

  414. selected and appointed

  415. and given authority.

  416. He must do something

  417. with it.

  418. Specifically,

  419. I see two things here.

  420. The king must purify

  421. God's kingdom

  422. and second,

  423. the king must care

  424. for God's kingdom

  425. on earth.

  426. Purify

  427. and care for it.

  428. first,

  429. for God's people

  430. to enjoy security,

  431. look at what Saul

  432. needs to do

  433. in verse 5.

  434. We read,

  435. after you shall come

  436. to the hill

  437. of God.

  438. Some translations

  439. just have it

  440. the high place,

  441. but we're told

  442. this is where

  443. the worship

  444. is happening.

  445. This is the hill

  446. where God

  447. will receive

  448. the offerings

  449. and the sacrifices

  450. of his people

  451. and meet them.

  452. And there

  453. is a Philistine

  454. garrison.

  455. This is not

  456. Philistine territory.

  457. This is God's

  458. territory.

  459. It's part of the

  460. geographic boundaries

  461. of God's kingdom

  462. on earth

  463. during this time.

  464. This is God's land

  465. and it's God's hill.

  466. And on this hill,

  467. this village,

  468. the Philistines

  469. have put an outpost

  470. of the Philistine empire.

  471. Now the Philistines

  472. hate the true God.

  473. They want to worship

  474. the idols

  475. and the pagan gods.

  476. And yet here

  477. on this holy

  478. hill of the Lord,

  479. they're being allowed

  480. to live there

  481. with their soldiers

  482. in this outpost.

  483. The hill of the Lord

  484. is not being kept pure

  485. of those who blaspheme

  486. and contradict

  487. the sovereign rule

  488. of God in the land.

  489. One commentator put,

  490. a blaspheming army

  491. of God

  492. in the hill of God.

  493. Pagans

  494. been permitted here

  495. to build a fortified

  496. stronghold

  497. on God's property.

  498. Enemy troops

  499. oppressing God's people

  500. from God's own hill.

  501. What should a king

  502. do about that?

  503. Now the instructions

  504. to Saul

  505. are very clear.

  506. It will be

  507. after all these signs,

  508. look at verse 6,

  509. the spirit will come

  510. upon you

  511. and you will prophesy.

  512. So listen for that

  513. in the story.

  514. Samuel says,

  515. when that happens,

  516. when you prophesy,

  517. look at what he says

  518. next in verse 7.

  519. Let it be

  520. when those signs

  521. come to you

  522. that you do

  523. as the occasion

  524. demands.

  525. Some translations say,

  526. do what your hand

  527. finds to do.

  528. And in Judges chapter 9,

    Judges 9 chapter mention

  529. we saw this in Sunday school,

  530. verses 32 and 34.

  531. That phrase

  532. in this context,

  533. do what your hand

  534. finds to do,

  535. it means you're the king.

  536. You're the man

  537. anointed by God,

  538. given power.

  539. You're to go

  540. and drive them out,

  541. slay them,

  542. cleanse the hill of God

  543. from idolatry.

  544. And it's given

  545. that further reinforcement.

  546. Look at verse 7,

  547. the very end.

  548. Do what your hand

  549. finds to do,

  550. drive out the enemy,

  551. for God is with you.

  552. What more could you need?

  553. These are marching orders.

  554. Get at it.

  555. In verse 13,

  556. when he had finished

  557. prophesying,

  558. let's see whether

  559. Saul does this.

  560. The Lord is with you,

  561. Saul.

  562. We simply read

  563. in verse 13

  564. that Saul went

  565. to a high place.

  566. He goes to talk

  567. to his uncle.

  568. I think because

  569. the command was so clear,

  570. the signs were so clear,

  571. you will prophesy.

  572. All these things happened,

  573. he prophesied.

  574. People are shocked.

  575. Even Saul,

  576. he's not the son

  577. of a prophet.

  578. What's going on?

  579. And instead of obeying,

  580. he does the same sin

  581. of Adam.

  582. It's God's temple,

  583. God's kingdom.

  584. And you're allowing

  585. the serpent

  586. to be right here

  587. in the holy

  588. consecrated land.

  589. He sinned

  590. by neglecting

  591. to drive them out.

  592. It's a sin

  593. of omission.

  594. And that's the first sin

  595. we see for this man

  596. anointed to be

  597. the king

  598. and the federal head.

  599. He did not purify

  600. the kingdom of God.

  601. I think the reason

  602. Saul did not purify

  603. the kingdom of God

  604. is because he did not

  605. care about

  606. or care for

  607. the kingdom of God.

  608. Why didn't he do it?

  609. We only care for

  610. what we care about.

  611. Look at verse 14.

  612. He goes up

  613. to talk to his uncle.

  614. We know one of

  615. Saul's uncles

  616. was Abner

  617. who was associated

  618. with the kingdom

  619. and the army,

  620. a great general.

  621. And his uncle says,

  622. where did you go?

  623. Saul, super open-ended,

  624. catching up with you.

  625. You can take this conversation

  626. anywhere you want.

  627. Where did you go?

  628. And look at what Saul says

  629. of all the things

  630. he had to report

  631. to look for the donkeys.

  632. And when we saw

  633. they were nowhere

  634. to be found,

  635. we went to Samuel.

  636. Okay, we're developing

  637. this conversation,

  638. taking it in the direction

  639. of God's man,

  640. the man of God

  641. who speaks for God.

  642. And then verse 15,

  643. Saul's uncle said,

  644. please tell me

  645. what Samuel said to you.

  646. It's emphatic.

  647. Tell me, please.

  648. What did Samuel say to you?

  649. That's what I'm interested in.

  650. So in the conversation,

  651. this is how it goes.

  652. One person shows interest

  653. in going this direction.

  654. I want to hear

  655. about the man of God.

  656. What did he have to say?

  657. He's specific

  658. and he's very interested.

  659. But look at Saul.

  660. He told us plainly

  661. that the donkeys

  662. had been found.

  663. Now, we could interpret this

  664. as him being humble

  665. and keeping it private,

  666. but I think that

  667. the narrator right here

  668. of this same passage.

  669. He doesn't want us

  670. to miss this point.

  671. Look at verse 16.

  672. He teaches us

  673. how to interpret this.

  674. Verse 16,

  675. but about the matter

  676. of the kingdom,

  677. Saul did not tell

  678. his uncle

  679. what this man of God

  680. had said.

  681. Well,

  682. we can't read more

  683. into Saul

  684. in this chapter

  685. than that.

  686. That's what it says.

  687. What we do know,

  688. though,

  689. is that for God's people,

  690. you and me,

  691. to enjoy security,

  692. we need a greater king,

  693. a great king

  694. who cares for God's kingdom,

  695. who brings the kingdom

  696. of heaven to earth,

  697. who purifies it.

  698. This is what we need.

  699. If you're here

  700. and you belong

  701. to the kingdom of God

  702. through Jesus Christ,

  703. Jesus is your king.

  704. Know that he cares

  705. about you

  706. and he will purify

  707. his kingdom.

  708. If you're in his kingdom,

  709. he will continue

  710. to purify you

  711. and me.

  712. And he will continue

  713. to care about

  714. demolishing and pushing

  715. out those strongholds

  716. of the enemy

  717. because you're in

  718. his kingdom

  719. and he's a king

  720. who cares

  721. and he's a king

  722. who is active

  723. and he uses

  724. the power of his spirit

  725. to cleanse

  726. and purify his people

  727. always.

  728. Anything brought

  729. into the domain

  730. and the rule

  731. of the special kingdom

  732. of heaven.

  733. If you're in the church,

  734. it means you're being

  735. cleansed more and more

  736. and more and more

  737. because we have

  738. such a king

  739. in Jesus Christ.

  740. Well, third,

  741. for God's people

  742. to enjoy security,

  743. the king must

  744. lead the people

  745. back to God.

  746. For God's people

  747. to enjoy security,

  748. we need a king

  749. who understands

  750. all the layers

  751. of authority.

  752. If you want a king

  753. like all the other nations,

  754. he's going to lead you

  755. in the path

  756. of all the other nations

  757. which is more power

  758. for yourselves,

  759. more glory for yourselves

  760. and in the end

  761. it's destruction

  762. from the hand of God.

  763. But if you want a king

  764. who understands

  765. true authority,

  766. it's a king

  767. who will lead his people

  768. to the highest ruler

  769. of all,

  770. God the creator.

  771. Samuel sets the stage

  772. for Saul.

  773. Look at verse 17.

  774. Samuel next calls

  775. all the people

  776. together

  777. to the Lord

  778. at Mizpah.

  779. Here's the man of God

  780. who proclaims

  781. the word of God

  782. calling all the people,

  783. representative heads

  784. from the whole nation,

  785. to the Lord.

  786. The Lord's going to

  787. meet with you

  788. and the place

  789. is Mizpah.

  790. Do you remember Mizpah?

  791. You can turn back

  792. to chapter 7

  793. if it helps you remember.

  794. Mizpah is the place

  795. where the Lord

  796. gave his nation

  797. the great victory

  798. as they worshiped

  799. the Lord

  800. and they had this

  801. wonderful worship ceremony

  802. and the burnt offering

  803. is going up

  804. and the Philistines

  805. are approaching

  806. and the Lord

  807. blasts the enemy

  808. from heaven

  809. with thunder

  810. and lightning.

  811. This is where God

  812. gathers his people

  813. and back in chapter 7

  814. remember what

  815. what the people did

  816. when they were gathered

  817. to the Lord

  818. at this place.

  819. Chapter 7 verse 6

  820. so they gathered

  821. at Mizpah

  822. and what they did

  823. is they drew water

  824. and they poured it out

  825. before the Lord

  826. and they fasted

  827. and they prayed

  828. and they said

  829. Lord we have sinned

  830. against you

  831. and Samuel judged

  832. the children of Israel

  833. at Mizpah.

  834. Everyone should know

  835. what the right response is.

  836. We're being gathered

  837. to the same place.

  838. This is our only response

  839. to God.

  840. It's to repent

  841. to pour out our hearts again.

  842. But there's no such

  843. pouring out of their hearts

  844. like water.

  845. There's no repentance

  846. no fasting

  847. no prayers

  848. this time around.

  849. Imagine being Samuel.

  850. How do you prepare

  851. to speak next

  852. to these people?

  853. Many of you

  854. have had to get up

  855. and give a talk

  856. you know for your business

  857. or your job

  858. and speak to your audience

  859. and you know the stakes

  860. are high

  861. you feel that pressure.

  862. What is the message

  863. that God's going to have

  864. Samuel give his people

  865. in this moment?

  866. How do you prepare?

  867. Well let's see what he says.

  868. Look at chapter 10

  869. verse 18.

  870. Samuel stands up

  871. and says

  872. thus says

  873. the Lord God of Israel

  874. I brought up Israel

  875. out of Egypt

  876. and delivered you

  877. from the hand

  878. of the Egyptians

  879. and from the hand

  880. of the kingdoms

  881. of those who oppressed you

  882. but you have today

  883. rejected your God

  884. who himself saved you

  885. from all your adversaries

  886. and your tribulations.

  887. You have said to him

  888. no

  889. set a king over us.

  890. Now therefore

  891. present yourselves

  892. before the Lord

  893. by your tribes

  894. and by your clans.

  895. He's calling them

  896. to judgment.

  897. When you notice

  898. what he's preaching though

  899. is the same thing

  900. he already preached

  901. to them.

  902. Turn back to chapter 8

  903. and look at verse 7.

  904. In chapter 8 verse 7

  905. Samuel stands

  906. before the people.

  907. He gives them

  908. God's word.

  909. Then he goes back

  910. and talks to the Lord

  911. and the Lord says

  912. Samuel

  913. they have not rejected you

  914. they have rejected me

  915. that I should not

  916. reign over them

  917. according to all

  918. the works

  919. which they have done

  920. since that day

  921. when I brought them

  922. out of Egypt

  923. even to this day

  924. with which they have

  925. forsaken me

  926. and served other gods

  927. so they do now.

  928. And in chapter 8

  929. Samuel turns around

  930. and preaches this

  931. to the people.

  932. It's the exact

  933. same message

  934. from the exact

  935. same person

  936. to the exact

  937. same audience.

  938. God's word

  939. is relentless.

  940. God's word

  941. chases his people

  942. down

  943. and when the people

  944. reject the Lord

  945. he could easily

  946. walk away

  947. become cold

  948. and distant

  949. but instead

  950. he pursues

  951. his people

  952. he brings

  953. his same

  954. word

  955. back to his people.

  956. His message

  957. does not change.

  958. What needs to change

  959. is the hearts

  960. of his people.

  961. This has been true

  962. in all of

  963. redemptive history.

  964. Martin Luther

  965. made this comment

  966. the Bible

  967. is alive

  968. it speaks to me

  969. it has feet

  970. it runs after me

  971. it has hands

  972. it lays hold of me

  973. God's truth

  974. through his word

  975. chases us down

  976. doesn't it?

  977. And he's so

  978. gracious

  979. it's the same

  980. message

  981. to his people.

  982. Praise the Lord

  983. if it's coming

  984. from a different

  985. mouth

  986. a different person

  987. even a different

  988. century

  989. it's the same

  990. message

  991. from the same

  992. God

  993. to his people.

  994. God is lovingly

  995. relentless

  996. in his word

  997. just like our

  998. hearts often

  999. are

  1000. God

  1001. is faithful

  1002. when his people

  1003. are faithless.

  1004. He's relentless

  1005. but still in Israel

  1006. there's no

  1007. repentance.

1008. Well who is it now?

  1009. This story cries out

  1010. for someone

  1011. who will

  1012. lead the people

  1013. by example

  1014. repent

  1015. turn back to God.

  1016. wouldn't it be

  1017. amazing to have

  1018. a king

  1019. a representative

  1020. who will do

  1021. that

  1022. who will stand

  1023. up and come

  1024. forward to the

  1025. Lord and be the

  1026. first one to pour

  1027. out his heart

  1028. like water.

  1029. I think it's a

  1030. wonderful pattern

  1031. in churches that

  1032. want to be

  1033. biblical

  1034. when those

  1035. the congregation

  1036. has set aside

  1037. for an office

  1038. elder or deacon

  1039. to lead by that

  1040. that prayer of

  1041. confession of sin

  1042. Lord search me

  1043. you know my heart

  1044. show me Lord

  1045. those ways that are

  1046. not right in my

  1047. heart and that's

  1048. what it means to

  1049. have spiritual

  1050. leadership in a

  1051. relationship in a

  1052. family in a

  1053. congregation.

  1054. It's to be

  1055. like in Psalm 51

  1056. a broken hearted

  1057. evangelist.

  1058. Lord you you know

  1059. my faults

  1060. help me to now

  1061. turn around and

  1062. proclaim the

  1063. goodness of God

  1064. who washed me

  1065. clean to those

  1066. who need to know

  1067. this wonderful

  1068. good news.

  1069. Well now what

  1070. what happens next

  1071. is that no one

  1072. stands up

  1073. voluntarily

  1074. and that wasn't

  1075. the purpose

  1076. except to expose

  1077. their lack of

  1078. repentance.

  1079. The purpose is

  1080. really that God

  1081. is going to give

  1082. them the king

  1083. that they want

  1084. to be like all

  1085. the other nations

  1086. but it'll be God

  1087. who will do it

  1088. just as God

  1089. anointed him in

  1090. private God's

  1091. going to announce

  1092. him now in

  1093. public and God

  1094. does this by using

  1095. lots.

  1096. There were

  1097. different forms

  1098. of casting lots

  1099. and most likely

  1100. it's each tribe

  1101. brings a stone

  1102. marked with their

  1103. tribe and you

  1104. bring it forward

  1105. and then the

  1106. stones will be

  1107. selected so it's

  1108. like a blind

  1109. test where you

  1110. just you let

  1111. luck or chance

  1112. as the pagans

  1113. would view it

  1114. decide which stone

  1115. is going to be

  1116. chosen.

  1117. Well in this

  1118. case we know

  1119. that there's no

  1120. such thing as

  1121. chance or luck

  1122. in all of this

  1123. creation.

  1124. Everything happens

  1125. through God

  1126. and by his

  1127. will and if you

  1128. thought it was

  1129. a high view of

  1130. God to let him

  1131. make Saul chase

  1132. the donkeys for

  1133. three days and

  1134. then go down the

  1135. hill and arrive at

  1136. the gate just as

  1137. Samuel's going up

  1138. what about this

  1139. for a view of

  1140. God's providence.

  1141. The Lord controls

  1142. and he shows the

  1143. people this is my

  1144. choice.

1145. This is how I will

  1146. rule my people

  1147. with a high

  1148. providence over you

  1149. my high sovereignty

  1150. on my people.

  1151. So the family of

  1152. Matri is chosen

  1153. from the tribe of

  1154. Benjamin down to

  1155. Kish and then

  1156. which of Kish's

  1157. sons and it will

  1158. be Saul.

  1159. we read in

  1160. verse 22

  1161. they looked around

  1162. and he couldn't

  1163. find him and so

  1164. they said well has

  1165. this man come here

  1166. yet?

  1167. See here's the

  1168. irony at this

  1169. point in the story

  1170. is these elders of

  1171. Israel who want a

  1172. king like all the

  1173. other nations

  1174. these wayward men

  1175. they can't even

  1176. find Saul the man

  1177. God put forward

  1178. for them just as

  1179. Saul couldn't find

  1180. those wayward

  1181. donkeys.

  1182. Well you know

  1183. what the Lord did

  1184. with the donkeys

  1185. is first he found

  1186. those donkeys for

  1187. the king and now

  1188. he's going to find

  1189. the king for these

  1190. wayward men.

  1191. God answered there

  1192. he is hidden among

  1193. the equipment.

  1194. How could Saul be

  1195. a king that would

  1196. draw the people

  1197. back to God?

  1198. He neglected to

  1199. draw near to God

  1200. himself and instead

  1201. he went into hiding.

  1202. The people should be

  1203. seeing all these

  1204. red flags.

  1205. They should be

  1206. hearing the message

  1207. loud and clear from

  1208. the Lord.

  1209. Don't you see?

  1210. I am your king.

  1211. But instead look at

  1212. verse 23 the people

  1213. ran.

  1214. They're still eager to

  1215. have their way and

  1216. they brought Saul from

  1217. there from behind the

  1218. equipment.

  1219. And then Saul stands

  1220. up among the people

  1221. and everyone can now

  1222. see with their eyes.

  1223. He's taller than any

  1224. of the people from

  1225. his shoulders upward.

  1226. The tallest head came

  1227. up to Saul's shoulders.

  1228. In verse 24 Samuel

1229. said to all the people

1230. do you see him whom

  1231. the Lord has chosen

1232. that there is no one

  1233. like him among all

  1234. the people?

1235. Look at verse 24 one

  1236. more time.

  1237. I don't know what

  1238. Samuel's tone would

1239. have been here but it

1240. could be read a few

  1241. different ways right?

  1242. There's no one like

  1243. Saul.

1244. Well first of all we're

  1245. not told of anyone

  1246. else hiding.

  1247. There's no one like

  1248. that here.

1249. And these men who are

  1250. eager to have their

  1251. king there's no one

  1252. tall like him.

1253. He does look like the

  1254. giant we want.

  1255. The great champion that

  1256. could give our nation

  1257. that fighting chance.

  1258. Samuel says see there's

1259. no one like him among

  1260. all the people.

  1261. And now instead of

  1262. repenting and fasting

  1263. and pouring their

1264. hearts out look what the

  1265. people do.

1266. In verse 24 all the

  1267. people shouted and

  1268. said long live the

  1269. king.

1270. May the king this man

  1271. who moments ago was

  1272. hiding may he live

  1273. forever.

1274. As long as this king

  1275. is alive the kingdom

  1276. of God God's

  1277. inheritance inheritance

1278. it will continue as it

  1279. is.

1280. So what the people are

1281. really saying is we like

  1282. the kingdom just like

  1283. this.

1284. We don't want it to

  1285. change.

  1286. They're going to learn

1287. the lesson as goes the

  1288. king so goes the

  1289. kingdom.

1290. How is it going for

1291. Saul up to this point?

  1292. Not good.

  1293. Not leading anyone back

  1294. to God.

  1295. Not stepping up and

  1296. purifying the kingdom

  1297. from the obvious

  1298. enemies that have taken

  1299. the hill of God.

  1300. That's how it's going to

  1301. go with Israel.

1302. Is this the king that

  1303. you want to live

  1304. forever?

  1305. And the people

  1306. shouted long live

  1307. the king.

  1308. The sad reality of

1309. sin their sin my sin

  1310. and yours is this.

1311. When when sin has a

  1312. grip or a foothold.

1313. You know the sin is

  1314. not good.

  1315. Paul says in Romans

  1316. 7 I actually hate it.

  1317. But you pray

1318. and you see like this

1319. sin in my life it

  1320. needs to be someone

  1321. stronger than me to

1322. set me free from it.

  1323. And until the Lord

  1324. himself by power sets

  1325. you free and purges

  1326. and cleanses his

  1327. kingdom which is you.

  1328. You're his temple.

  1329. His life.

  1330. It's your life.

  1331. Until the Lord

  1332. does it.

  1333. It's like that

  1334. Philistine garrison

1335. on the hill of the

  1336. Lord.

  1337. You're powerless

  1338. just like Saul.

  1339. And I'm powerless.

  1340. We're probably

  1341. worse than Saul.

  1342. And the Holy Spirit

  1343. inside God's people

1344. he wants to show you

  1345. how foolish this is.

  1346. See you're saying

  1347. to this idol

  1348. may you live

1349. like this in my life

  1350. forever.

  1351. I like my life

1352. exactly how it is now.

  1353. I don't want the

  1354. Lord to come and

  1355. disrupt it.

  1356. God came

  1357. in King Jesus

  1358. to show you

  1359. and me

  1360. there is a better

  1361. kingdom.

  1362. There's a better

  1363. life.

  1364. And where you fail

  1365. where you're too weak

  1366. the Lord

  1367. will cleanse you.

  1368. Now there's also

  1369. I think an application

  1370. from Saul.

  1371. He's chosen

  1372. by God.

  1373. He's put into

  1374. this position.

  1375. Maybe like Esther

  1376. she's reluctant

  1377. and doesn't know

  1378. what to do

  1379. or even if she

  1380. wants all this

  1381. responsibility.

1382. But for such a time

  1383. as this the Lord

  1384. has placed you

  1385. where he's placed you.

  1386. And when the Lord

  1387. gives you a position

  1388. of influence

  1389. it could be influence

  1390. over one person

  1391. in your family.

  1392. Maybe a younger sibling.

  1393. Maybe a friend

  1394. that you're back

  1395. in touch with now.

  1396. You have a chance

  1397. to influence them.

  1398. You want to use

  1399. that position

  1400. of influence

  1401. and point them

  1402. to the Lord.

  1403. Lead them back

  1404. to God.

  1405. Do what Saul

  1406. failed to do.

  1407. Show them look

  1408. I'm the first one

  1409. to confess my sin

  1410. and repent

  1411. and come with me

  1412. because God

  1413. is a good

  1414. and gracious king.

  1415. Lead your friend.

  1416. Lead those people

  1417. God is entrusted

  1418. to your care

  1419. back to his kingdom.

  1420. And you do it

  1421. soli deo gloria

  1422. for the glory

  1423. of God alone.

  1424. Well that's the last

  1425. of this passage

  1426. and we see

  1427. as it ends

  1428. that not only

  1429. did Saul fail

  1430. to lead the people

  1431. in repentance

  1432. and he failed

  1433. to declare

  1434. the Lord of armies

  1435. to this rebellious people.

  1436. He failed

  1437. to point them

1438. back to the true king

  1439. God on high

  1440. who's been their help

  1441. who delivered them

  1442. out of slavery.

  1443. And what's more

  1444. by neglecting

  1445. and being passive

  1446. Saul actually

  1447. becomes the object

  1448. of their idolatry.

  1449. Well you and I

  1450. we want security

  1451. just as badly

  1452. as these ancient Israelites.

  1453. And our hearts

  1454. can just as easily

  1455. set our hopes

  1456. on lesser things

  1457. on idols

1458. that are just as foolish.

1459. And none of those things

  1460. can secure

  1461. our future

  1462. or provide the stability

  1463. that we want.

1464. So I want to leave you

1465. with this word of hope.

  1466. Even in the shadows

  1467. of this passage

  1468. of chapter 10

1469. in the work of God

  1470. ordaining every event

  1471. that happens

  1472. we see signs

  1473. that are given

  1474. very clearly

1475. to mark out the king.

  1476. What sign

  1477. does God give

  1478. in this story

  1479. that can help us

  1480. as God's people

  1481. to recognize

  1482. our true king?

  1483. See in literature

  1484. an archetype

  1485. is a pattern

  1486. that repeats itself

  1487. in multiple stories

  1488. to highlight

  1489. a motif

  1490. or a theme.

  1491. The theme

  1492. of this chapter

  1493. obviously

  1494. is the kingdom

  1495. of God.

  1496. And it's being

  1497. administered

  1498. on earth

  1499. by a man.

  1500. It's this English

  1501. theologian

  1502. named Alistair Roberts

  1503. who helped me

  1504. to see this.

  1505. Look at the signs.

1506. Go back to chapter 10

  1507. verse 3.

  1508. Do you remember

  1509. those men

  1510. that Samuel told him

  1511. would be bringing

  1512. goats

  1513. loaves of bread

  1514. a skin of wine

  1515. and then there

  1516. would be followed

  1517. by music.

  1518. You remember

  1519. those signs?

  1520. And then we read

  1521. in verse 9

  1522. Saul's heart

  1523. would change

  1524. even though

  1525. it would be

  1526. temporarily

  1527. and it wouldn't

  1528. affect the whole

  1529. nation.

  1530. It would be

  1531. a sign.

  1532. These are signs

  1533. of the kingdom

  1534. but they're only

  1535. an archetype.

  1536. They're only signs

  1537. we can trace out

  1538. if they show up

  1539. in other stories.

  1540. Would you turn

  1541. next to 1 Samuel

    1 Samuel 16 chapter mention

  1542. chapter 16.

  1543. Look at 1 Samuel

  1544. 16 19

  1545. just a few

  1546. pages forward.

  1547. Let's see if we

  1548. find those same

  1549. signs

  1550. and develop

  1551. an archetype here.

  1552. Are these pointing

  1553. to the king

  1554. to the kingdom?

  1555. Well the next king

  1556. after Saul

1557. is going to be David.

  1558. Look at this

  1559. amazing description.

  1560. Saul says

  1561. send me your son

  1562. David

  1563. who is with

  1564. the sheep.

  1565. Then Jesse

  1566. took a donkey

  1567. there's a donkey

  1568. loaded with bread

  1569. and skins of wine

  1570. and a young goat.

  1571. They're all there.

  1572. And he sent him

  1573. with his son

  1574. David to Saul.

  1575. David plays music

  1576. in the court

  1577. of the king

  1578. and we're told

  1579. that Saul's heart

  1580. changes.

  1581. Exact same events.

  1582. The donkey

  1583. the goats

  1584. the bread

  1585. the wine

  1586. music

  1587. and a changed heart.

  1588. Well now we got

  1589. to look at

  1590. the New Testament.

  1591. Would you turn

  1592. to Luke chapter 19?

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  1593. Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  1594. Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  1595. Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  1596. Remember we're listening

  1597. for a donkey

  1598. a blood sacrifice

  1599. bread

  1600. wine

  1601. music.

  1602. Luke chapter 19

    Luke 19:30

  1603. verse 30.

  1604. Jesus tells his disciples

1605. as you enter the village

1606. you will find a colt tied there

1607. now in Luke chapter 19

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  1608. look at verse 45

1609. where Saul neglected to drive out

1610. the Philistines in the garrison

1611. of the holy hill of God

  1612. Jesus Christ

  1613. drives out

1614. those who are buying and selling

  1615. in the holy temple

  1616. this is God's domain

1617. now if you keep going in Luke

1618. look at Luke chapter 22

    Luke 22:10

  1619. verse 10

  1620. what about the goat

  1621. the blood sacrifice

  1622. the bread

1623. the wine and the music

  1624. Luke 22 chapter 10

  1625. behold

  1626. he tells his disciples

1627. when you enter the city

1628. a man carrying a pitcher of water

1629. you'll see him coming down

1630. follow him into a house

1631. he'll show you to the upper room

  1632. and there make ready

  1633. the Passover

1634. what do you do to make ready

  1635. the Passover

  1636. you take

  1637. a blood sacrifice

  1638. a lamb

  1639. you prepare the bread

1640. you prepare all the utensils

1641. you leave the wine and the cups

  1642. ready to be served

  1643. when the Lord administers

  1644. the Lord's Supper

1645. we read this every single week

1646. they ate the blood sacrifice

  1647. he says

  1648. I'm your Passover lamb

1649. he gives him the bread

1650. he gives him the fruit

  1651. of the vine

1652. and then they sing a song

  1653. and then they departed

  1654. where Saul is set

1655. to go wait for seven days

1656. after Christ's work is done

  1657. which we'll celebrate

1658. with Good Friday and Easter

  1659. he tells the church

  1660. go and wait

  1661. the Holy Spirit

1662. is poured out on the church

  1663. in Acts 2

  1664. their hearts are changed

1665. but now it's not just

  1666. a temporary change

1667. it's the whole nation of God

  1668. everyone who will believe

1669. will have a changed heart

1670. so those are the signs

  1671. and there's the fulfillment

  1672. from the shadows

  1673. the substance

  1674. Jesus Christ

  1675. he shows up

1676. and those who know the Bible

1677. they know to look for him

  1678. the true king

1679. and this is one small way

  1680. one small shadow

1681. every chapter of the Old Testament

  1682. points to Christ

1683. in so many different glorious ways

1684. our lifetimes are too short

1685. to study all of it

  1686. behold King Jesus

  1687. that's the takeaway

  1688. from 1 Samuel chapter 5

    1 Samuel 5 chapter mention

1689. you need a greater king

1690. and behold in Jesus Christ

  1691. he has come

1692. there are a few contrasts

1693. that we can draw here as well

  1694. see Saul's heart

  1695. was never perfectly aligned

  1696. to God

  1697. on earth

  1698. we need a king

  1699. whose heart

  1700. will be unbending

  1701. always

  1702. consummately

  1703. in every way

  1704. aligned

1705. to the will of God

  1706. in heaven

1707. we're told at the end

  1708. of chapter 10

  1709. of 1 Samuel

1710. that a few valiant men

  1711. went with Saul

  1712. whose hearts

  1713. God had touched

  1714. and now because

  1715. the Holy Spirit

  1716. has been poured out

  1717. on his church

  1718. all those

  1719. whose hearts

  1720. the Holy Spirit touches

  1721. they follow King Jesus

  1722. to be a Christian

1723. is to be one of those

  1724. valiant men

  1725. that God himself

  1726. has said

  1727. follow this king

  1728. and you do it

  1729. in chapter 10

  1730. of 1 Samuel

  1731. verse 16

  1732. we're told

  1733. that sad

  1734. insight

1735. in talking with his uncle

  1736. that of the kingdom

  1737. of God

  1738. Saul said

  1739. nothing

1740. and when all the people

  1741. are gathered at Mizpah

  1742. Saul called no one

  1743. to repent

  1744. he led no one

  1745. back to God

  1746. but behold

  1747. King Jesus

  1748. in Mark 1

  1749. 14 and 15

  1750. he came preaching

  1751. the gospel

  1752. of the kingdom

  1753. of God

  1754. and saying

  1755. the time is fulfilled

  1756. the kingdom of God

  1757. is at hand

  1758. repent

  1759. and believe

  1760. in the gospel

  1761. calling everyone

  1762. whosoever will

  1763. to go to God

  1764. turn back to him

  1765. the kingdom of God

  1766. is at hand

  1767. in Jesus Christ

  1768. in 1 Samuel

    1 Samuel 10:21

  1769. chapter 10

  1770. verse 21

  1771. we are told

  1772. that Saul

  1773. the son of Kish

  1774. was chosen

  1775. and when they

  1776. sought him

  1777. they could not

  1778. find him

  1779. well behold

  1780. in King Jesus

  1781. the son of God

  1782. God the son

  1783. he was chosen

  1784. to accomplish

  1785. God's eternal plan

  1786. and because he succeeded

  1787. he calls everyone

  1788. whosoever will

  1789. to come to God

  1790. in him

  1791. and come to God

1792. while he may be found

  1793. Christ is here

  1794. to extend grace

  1795. and draw everyone

  1796. to the father

  1797. who will believe

  1798. in him

  1799. for you and me

  1800. as God's people

  1801. to enjoy security

  1802. the king must be

  1803. the one to lead

  1804. the people

  1805. back to God

  1806. and behold

  1807. King Jesus

  1808. he has done this

  1809. in Saul

  1810. the Lord Jesus

  1811. in Saul

  1812. God took

  1813. an embarrassingly

  1814. unqualified man

  1815. and elevated him

  1816. the contrast is

  1817. Jesus Christ

1818. is the only qualified man

  1819. already elevated

  1820. at the right hand

  1821. of God

  1822. and yet he descended

1823. he took on a body

  1824. Hebrews 10 says

  1825. a body you have

  1826. prepared for me

  1827. and I have come

  1828. to do your will

  1829. God anointed Saul

  1830. with oil

  1831. to please sinners

  1832. but because he's

  1833. well pleased

  1834. in his son

  1835. God the father

  1836. anointed King Jesus

  1837. with his Holy Spirit

  1838. so that he would

  1839. save sinners

1840. like you and like me

  1841. in John 14 6

  1842. Jesus says

  1843. I am the way

  1844. to the father

  1845. no one comes

  1846. to the father

  1847. except through me

  1848. so come to me

  1849. all you who are

  1850. weary and heavy laden

  1851. I'll take you

  1852. to the father

  1853. I'm the only one

  1854. who can

  1855. Jesus hides

  1856. from no one

  1857. he's lifted up

  1858. so all the world

  1859. can see him

  1860. for you and me

  1861. to enjoy security

  1862. as God's people

  1863. the king must purify

  1864. and care for

  1865. his kingdom

  1866. on earth

  1867. we read in

  1868. Revelation 1

  1869. King Jesus

  1870. is the one

  1871. who loved us

  1872. and washed us

  1873. from our sins

  1874. with his own blood

  1875. so that we can

  1876. enjoy communion

  1877. with God

  1878. just like every nation

  1879. or every kingdom

  1880. has an anthem

  1881. all of those

  1882. who belong

  1883. to King Jesus

  1884. and his kingdom

  1885. we have an anthem

  1886. as well

  1887. it's a glorious anthem

  1888. even though there's

  1889. many melodies to it

  1890. many lyrics

  1891. many different languages

  1892. it tells one

  1893. great story

  1894. and it's that God

  1895. saves sinners

  1896. by his amazing grace

  1897. through Jesus Christ

  1898. the king

1899. and the lord of all

1900. so we join our voices

  1901. like we will

  1902. in a moment

  1903. we say amazing grace
