  1. Samuel chapter 17.

  2. Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle and were gathered at Socah, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socah and Azekah in Ephes-Daman.

  3. And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and they encamped in the valley of Elah and drew up in battle array against the Philistines.

  4. The Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side with a valley between them.

  5. And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines named Goliath from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.

  6. He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of his coat was 5,000 shekels of bronze.

  7. And he had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders.

  8. Now the staff of his spear was like a weaver's beam, and his iron spearhead weighed 600 shekels, and a shield bearer went before him.

  9. Then he stood and cried out to the armies of Israel and said to them,

  10. Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul?

  11. Choose a man for yourselves and let him come down to me.

  12. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants.

  13. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.

  14. And the Philistines said, I defy the armies of Israel this day.

  15. Give me a man that we may fight together.

  16. When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

  17. Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehem, Judah, whose name was Jesse, and who had eight sons.

  18. And the man was old, advanced in years in the days of Saul.

  19. And the three oldest sons of Jesse had gone to follow Saul to the battle.

  20. The names of these three sons who went to the battle were Eliab, the firstborn next to him, Abinadab, and the third Shammah.

  21. David was the youngest, and the three oldest followed Saul.

  22. But David occasionally went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep at Bethlehem.

  23. And the Philistine drew near and presented himself forty days, morning and evening.

  24. Then Jesse said to his son David,

  25. Take now for your brothers an ephah of this dried grain and these ten loaves, and run to your brothers at the camp.

  26. And carry these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and see how your brothers fare, and bring back news of them.

  27. So Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.

  28. So David rose early in the morning, left the sheep with the keeper, and took the things as he went and as Jesse had commanded him.

  29. And he came to the camp as the army was going out to fight and shouting for battle.

  30. For Israel and the Philistines had drawn up in battle array, army against army.

  31. And David left his supplies in the hand of the supply keeper, ran to the army, and came and greeted his brothers.

  32. Then, as he talked with them, there was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of the Philistines.

  33. And he spoke according to the same words.

  34. So David heard them.

  35. And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were dreadfully afraid.

  36. So the men of Israel said,

  37. Have you seen this man who has come up?

  38. Surely he has come up to defy Israel.

  39. And it shall be that the man who kills him, the king, will enrich with great riches, will give him his daughter, and give his father's house exemption from taxes in Israel.

  40. Then David spoke to the men who stood by him, saying,

  41. What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel?

  42. For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?

  43. And the people answered him in this manner, saying,

  44. So shall it be done for the man who kills him.

  45. The word of God for the people of God.

  46. Please be seated.

  47. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  48. Let's pray.

  49. Lord, we thank you that your Holy Spirit has been active through every generation, through every step of redemptive history.

  50. We thank you for how your Holy Spirit is poured out now in your church.

  51. And that by the power of the Holy Spirit, your word comes alive.

  52. And you shine the light of the gospel accomplished by Jesus Christ on every part of your word to your people.

  53. We ask that you will please do that now, Lord.

  54. For Christ's sake we pray.

  55. Amen.

  56. Amen.

  57. Well, following the fall of France in 1940, Great Britain was left to stand alone against Nazi Germany.

  58. In a moment of national crisis, can you imagine being in London like the little children in the Chronicles of Narnia,

  59. about to hear these airplanes fly over and drop bombs on your neighborhood?

  60. The prime minister got on the radio and had opportunities to speak to the people.

  61. In the face of the imminent battle of Britain, in some of his words I remember this day,

  62. he told them,

  63. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be.

  64. We shall fight on the beaches.

  65. We shall fight on the landing grounds.

  66. We shall fight in the fields and in the streets.

  67. We shall fight in the hills.

  68. We shall never surrender.

  69. How one man sees the war changes everything.

  70. You and I as Christians, we're in a war also.

  71. We fight against the world, the flesh, and the devil.

  72. But how do we see this war?

  73. You and I are either in the kingdom of Christ,

  74. or we are an enemy of God still under bondage to sin, Satan, and the world.

  75. But the war is real.

  76. Last week, our encouragement was that nothing can stop God from advancing his kingdom.

  77. And this week, the nature of the kingdom of God is put to the test.

  78. And it's defined for us by the words of the anointed king.

  79. David goes to see the war.

  80. And David viewed the war differently.

  81. So that's my message for us today as we walk through this wonderful passage.

  82. How the anointed shepherd saw the war.

  83. How the anointed shepherd saw the war.

  84. First out of five observations is the setting of this battle.

  85. Please look at 1 Samuel 17, verse 1.

    1 Samuel 17:1

  86. We read,

  87. Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle.

  88. It's a verb in the active voice.

  89. The Philistines gathered their armies together to battle.

  90. Organized, powerful, confident, commanding, advancing.

  91. We're given a detail of the location at Sokoth.

  92. What are the words that come next after that city in verse 1?

  93. Which belongs to Judah.

  94. This description reminds us that the Philistines had invaded the land that God secured for his people.

  95. They had encroached on Judean soil.

  96. Saul had failed to keep the enemy out of the kingdom of God.

  97. And so now the two sides mount for war.

  98. Along this ridgeline at the top of the hill was a major road which the Philistines now controlled.

  99. Giving them control over whatever would enter or leave Israel.

  100. We read in verse 2 that Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together.

  101. Here that same verb is given in the passive voice.

  102. It's something being done to them.

  103. They encamped at the valley of Elah.

  104. They drew up in battle array against the Philistines.

  105. We're told that each part of the army, each side had a mountain.

  106. And in between them was this valley.

  107. And this valley is where the border will be redefined.

  108. If the Philistines win this battle, they have now free reign to invade the whole kingdom of God's people.

  109. The Philistines also owned the metal industry.

  110. They had a complete monopoly on the blacksmith trade.

  111. They secured through metal and weapons that they brought a military dominance.

  112. You can flip back to see that and remember for yourself.

  113. Look at 1 Samuel chapter 13.

    1 Samuel 13 chapter mention

  114. Just a page or two back.

  115. Verses 19 and 20.

  116. We read,

  117. The only two men in all of Israel that had weapons, you'll remember, were Saul the king and Jonathan the crowned prince.

  118. They had the most advanced military weapon of the day, which were ironclad chariots.

  119. And with chariots covered in metal, no one could stop the advance of the Philistines.

  120. We read that they were gathered for an attack with the Philistines coming up from the south,

  121. the Israelites on the northern side in the land of Judah.

  122. As someone pointed out, the future of their nation, all is going to be determined by this one battle.

  123. And if ever a lion from the tribe of Judah was needed, it was now at this moment.

  124. On verse 3, we read that the Philistines stood on a mountain on one side

  125. and Israel stood on a mountain on the other with a valley in between them.

  126. In between them was a ravine, an east-west wadi is the name in Israel.

  127. And it's like a dry creek.

  128. It's a tear in the soil that makes it impossible for chariots to roll across.

  129. And so this was most likely one of the reasons we now have a cold war, a standoff.

  130. Both sides are in battle array, waiting for the moment now when the first arrow will be shot across this valley.

  131. Israel had been given this land by God, been drawn out of slavery to possess it, to live in it,

  132. and to be ruled in this land by God as a gift of his grace to them, his people.

  133. But as we can see in the mindset of the Israelites, most still lived as slaves to the world.

  134. We're told that this valley is called the Valley of Elah, literally oak.

  135. So it's a big tree down in the middle of this valley with a ravine cutting through it.

  136. The oak tree is a long-living tree.

  137. Most likely this one grew very tall so that it could be a landmark, a point of reference for everyone traveling through.

  138. So here, on the standoff between two armies, with one big central tree in the middle,

  139. heaven and hell will have a standoff.

  140. This long-lasting tree will be what this battle is remembered by.

  141. Here is where the battle will be fought, and here the war will be decided.

  142. Well, we too were born into slavery to sin.

  143. We're born into this world in bondage.

  144. But our Lord Jesus Christ entered the domain of darkness.

  145. Jesus Christ secured our citizenship in the kingdom of heaven.

  146. In Colossians 1.13, we read that God rescued us who are in Christ from the dominion of darkness

  147. and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.

  148. And like Israel preparing for this great battle, our fate also was determined.

  149. That one moment in time, that long-standing tree, the cross of our Savior Jesus.

  150. Though we're still in this world, we are not of this world.

  151. We are in God's kingdom of grace.

  152. And by his power, by his strength, these borders of his kingdom are to be protected.

  153. The enemy is not to creep in, not to invade the borders of the kingdom of God

  154. in our hearts, in our families, and in our church.

  155. That's the setting of the battle.

  156. Number two, what about the enemy's champion?

  157. The enemy's champion.

  158. Goliath stands as the tormentor, the accuser of God's people.

  159. Goliath is the figurehead of the domain of hell and darkness in the world.

  160. He's the one who is the weaponizer of sin and death.

  161. And we're given a very detailed description that's meant to strike fear in us, beginning in verse 4.

  162. We read that a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines named Goliath from Gath.

  163. Gath was the city of the Philistines, one of the five powerful cities just on the other side of the border from Israel.

  164. So this battle was taking place in Goliath's backyard.

  165. We're told that his height was six cubits and a span.

  166. Most estimate that Goliath would have stood at nine feet, nine inches tall.

  167. So children, that's three inches, just that much shorter than a 10-foot basketball hoop.

  168. So it works really well for us to have our service today in a gym because we can see that.

  169. And I was trying to visualize somewhere toward the bottom of the net is where the nose of this great warrior would be if he's nine foot nine.

  170. Can you imagine the body of a giant filling in from that point of height all the way down?

  171. That's how tall he was.

  172. Gath was a strategic border city and it's meeting the world, meeting Judah.

  173. This would have been David's backyard as well.

  174. And this is the tribe of Judah that had not sent as many soldiers to go fight in Saul's war in the previous chapter.

  175. Now, their own fields, their own livelihood is directly under attack.

  176. Archaeological excavations of Gath near this same valley, the Valley of the Tree today, found extensive fortifications.

  177. And they found an iron production facility in this same land.

  178. And so here comes the champion from the Philistine side.

  179. By his words, we can tell that the Philistines, through him their mouthpiece, despise God the creator.

  180. These are rebellious people that are mocking God's people.

  181. And yet we see the reaction of the Israelites is that they are impressed.

  182. They are stunned.

  183. You could even say they're attracted to that worldly way of war.

  184. The word champion that's given in verse four, it literally means a man between or a man in the middle of two sides.

  185. A warrior who's going to go between the two armies and represent his entire nation.

  186. One soldier who's going to go fight a single combat as a stand-in for the entire army.

  187. This is how nations of the world showcase their power.

  188. And it goes back well before what we're familiar with.

  189. You think of how the Philistines were called the Sea People.

  190. And historians' best conclusion is that the Philistines were originally from the islands of Greece

  191. until they got on their ships, these seafaring people,

  192. and they left to go to Egypt and then to Judea or to the land of Israel.

  193. So I looked up what century was it that the Philistines began sending, you know,

  194. their own men off of these Greek islands to other parts of the world.

  195. And it was the 12th century before Christ.

  196. So then I looked it up.

  197. When was, you know, Homer's setting, the Iliad and the Odyssey,

  198. what were the setting of that?

  199. And it was the 12th century before Christ.

  200. In other words, if you're familiar with this Greek legends and stories

  201. of how these great warriors would be sent out,

  202. like Achilles, to represent an entire nation, an entire kingdom,

  203. this would be like an early gladiatorial game.

  204. You get to watch the best of the best from each side go head to head.

  205. And then from then the battle continues,

  206. like the battle between the Greeks and the Trojans.

  207. So the Philistines brought with them most likely this tradition

  208. of sending out a champion as a federal representative.

  209. Rather than the vast multitude dying right away,

  210. and then we see who wins,

  211. let's send out a token representation.

  212. Because most likely, however that goes,

  213. is how the rest of the battle is going to go.

  214. And as Goliath taunts Israel,

  215. the losing nation has much at stake.

  216. The whole nation will now become slaves of the winning nation.

  217. The victorious champion will secure the freedom of his people

  218. and establish dominance over the enemies that he defeated.

  219. You see how now the fate of each nation

  220. is placed in the hands of one champion,

  221. one warrior who will go between to fight.

  222. Now we get a description from his head all the way down

  223. of how he was dressed as their champion.

  224. We need to know that ordinary foot soldiers

  225. would have worn helmets,

  226. but most likely because they're poor

  227. and don't have a lot of access to resources,

  228. their helmets were often made of leather.

  229. So a little bit of protection,

  230. but nothing compared to verse 5.

  231. Goliath had a bronze helmet on his head.

  232. He was armed with a coat of mail.

  233. In Hebrew, he was clothed with scales.

  234. Like the Philistine idol Dagon, remember?

  235. Goliath, whose lower half was fish-like or serpent-like,

  236. clothed in scales.

  237. Now Goliath's body is covered in scales.

  238. He's a warrior showcasing the most advanced technology of his people

  239. who have a monopoly on metalworking.

  240. And his people learned how to suit themselves for war

  241. by studying scale-covered creatures,

  242. studying the way of the serpent, you could say.

  243. Scales facilitate movement while shielding the body.

  244. Most likely, Goliath's coat of scales

  245. was made of overlapping plates of bronze

  246. sewn onto leather,

  247. then put onto his body.

  248. So a strike of a weapon would disperse the shock,

  249. and even if one piece was damaged,

  250. the rest of the armor would remain intact

  251. and still able to continue fighting.

  252. We're told the weight of the coat

  253. was 5,000 shekels of bronze.

  254. To our English American pounds,

  255. it's 125 pounds.

  256. Now you think of David,

  257. we'll get a few insights in him here in a moment.

  258. David likely did not weigh more than 125 pounds

  259. at this point in his life as a teenager.

  260. We know David would have been a teenager

  261. because Numbers 26, 2 says that

  262. all those 20 years old or more

  263. who are able to serve in the army of Israel shall serve.

  264. We read in verse 6 that Goliath

  265. had bronze armor on his legs,

  266. bronze shin guards,

  267. and bronze thigh plates.

  268. And think about the color bronze.

  269. The Philistines had more sturdy weapons.

  270. You know, they had iron-clad chariots

  271. and other weapons,

  272. but they want their champion

  273. to be in shiny bronze.

  274. And as we get the picture of Goliath

  275. being presented forth,

  276. we can only imagine what other sounds and sights

  277. would have accompanied that.

  278. But as he comes,

  279. as the sun is rising

  280. and those rays of sun

  281. are bouncing off of the bronze,

  282. it would have been a stunning sight.

  283. Bronze, stealing light from the sun,

  284. like their little replica of a Greek god,

  285. a lowercase g.

  286. You could almost imagine Goliath

  287. like an angel-type blasphemer,

  288. glowing with light.

  289. And we read that even his bronze javelin

  290. was between his shoulders,

  291. strapped to his back.

  292. This javelin was designed for hurling.

  293. You'd pull it off of the back

  294. and throw it.

  295. The spear was designed for hand-to-hand combat

  296. like a long sword.

  297. We read in verse 7,

  298. now the staff of his spear

  299. was like a weaver's beam,

  300. most likely about five feet long.

  301. David might have been about five feet tall

  302. at this stage of his life.

  303. His iron spearhead weighed 600 shekels.

  304. That's 16 pounds.

  305. I looked up,

  306. what is 16 pounds?

  307. It's a common object

  308. and it's a bowling ball.

  309. You think how much you can hurl a bowling ball.

  310. Goliath is a walking arsenal.

  311. Someone called him a weapon of mass destruction.

  312. We're told then that his shield-bearer

  313. went before him.

  314. This is like his defensive line

  315. if he's the quarterback,

  316. positioned to block him,

  317. probably a shield covering almost the entire body

  318. with this champion right behind it.

  319. I wondered also,

  320. how is it that Israel came to have

  321. all of these details and these measurements?

  322. If you look down at verse 53,

  323. we read that the people of Israel

  324. came back from chasing the Philistines

  325. and they plundered their camp.

  326. So I wondered,

  327. as they're plundering the camp,

  328. we've got to save all of this

  329. and while we have it,

  330. let's weigh it

  331. and let's find out,

  332. I mean,

  333. what was Goliath wearing?

  334. So that's just my guess,

  335. but this description that we're given

  336. is so detailed,

  337. again,

  338. using up precious words on a scroll

  339. for a reason.

  340. It paints a picture.

  341. It's an evaluation,

  342. you could say,

  343. from the perspective

  344. of an offensive coordinator,

  345. why the enemy's mightiest weapon

  346. seems impossible to beat.

  347. From the eyes of the world,

  348. the eyes of Israel,

  349. we have no shot.

  350. If that's the best showcase

  351. of what this entire empire is bringing,

  352. who are we to go up against them?

  353. We read today from Matthew

  354. how our Lord Jesus

  355. faced the enemy one-on-one,

  356. tempted in the desert.

  357. He faced off against Satan,

  358. the devil,

  359. Lucifer,

  360. the ancient serpent

  361. called a dragon.

  362. And where Saul was passive

  363. and Adam,

  364. the first federal head,

  365. was passive,

  366. our Lord Jesus Christ

  367. was not passive.

  368. He went on the offensive.

  369. He invaded the domain

  370. of what he called

  371. in John 12, 31,

  372. the prince of this world.

  373. And Jesus Christ

  374. withstood

  375. and overcame

  376. the enemy

  377. alone.

  378. We too,

  379. in the words of Martin Luther,

  380. are amid the flood

  381. of mortal ills prevailing.

  382. For still our ancient foe

  383. does seek to work us woe.

  384. His craft and power

  385. are great

  386. and armed

  387. with cruel hate

  388. on earth

  389. is not his equal.

  390. But we look to Jesus Christ,

  391. the promised,

  392. anointed,

  393. shepherd king.

  394. So our third observation

  395. is now the reaction

  396. of Israel

  397. to seeing this champion,

  398. Goliath.

  399. It's the cowardly army.

  400. The cowardly army.

  401. Verse 8 says,

  402. Then he stood

  403. and cried out

  404. to the armies

  405. of Israel,

  406. Why have you come out

  407. to line up for battle?

  408. Am I not

  409. a Philistine?

  410. Literally,

  411. he says,

  412. Am I not

  413. the Philistine?

  414. And you,

  415. these servants

  416. or slaves

  417. of Saul?

  418. Goliath is speaking truth,

  419. isn't he?

  420. Israel had made themselves

  421. slaves to Saul,

  422. a king after their own hearts.

  423. God said Israel

  424. had rejected

  425. the Lord of hosts

  426. as their king.

  427. And now Goliath says,

  428. Choose a man

  429. for yourselves.

  430. Let him come down

  431. to me.

  432. If he is able

  433. to fight with me

  434. and kill me,

  435. then we will be

  436. your slaves.

  437. But if I prevail

  438. against him

  439. and kill him,

  440. then you shall be

  441. our slaves

  442. and serve us.

  443. In verse 10,

  444. the Philistine said,

  445. I defy

  446. the armies

  447. of Israel

  448. this day.

  449. Experts

  450. in the Hebrew language

  451. say that the word

  452. defy

  453. is unusually

  454. harsh.

  455. It means

  456. to put under

  457. reproach,

  458. to charge you

  459. with severe

  460. contempt.

  461. It's to shame you,

  462. to deride you,

  463. to accuse you,

  464. to put extreme

  465. disgrace

  466. on God's people.

  467. Notice how

  468. Goliath says,

  469. Give me

  470. a man

  471. that we may

  472. fight together.

  473. earlier when the

  474. Israelites confronted

  475. the Philistines,

  476. this was the language

  477. of the Philistines.

  478. Maybe again from

  479. that Greek tradition.

  480. Give me a man.

  481. Who will be a man

  482. to go fight?

  483. Goliath says,

  484. Do you have

  485. any man

  486. among you?

  487. In other words,

  488. if you don't

  489. produce a champion,

  490. you have no men

  491. in your entire

  492. nation.

  493. He is

  494. shaming them.

  495. He's saying,

  496. You can't match

  497. me on our

  498. terms.

  499. The Israelites,

  500. as they assess

  501. the situation,

  502. if they were

  503. a little bit

  504. relieved at first

  505. that this

  506. wadi,

  507. this ravine

  508. that cut through

  509. the valley

  510. had disarmed

  511. or neutralized

  512. their chariots

  513. for now,

  514. all the hope

  515. that they had

  516. of delaying

  517. any longer

  518. is now gone.

  519. You can almost

  520. imagine them

  521. as Marsha

  522. pointed out,

  523. you know,

  524. sitting around

  525. the campfire

  526. each evening

  527. as soldiers

  528. talking and

  529. assessing their

  530. future.

  531. Maybe we ought

  532. to accept this

  533. offer and send

  534. a champion

  535. representing our

  536. side.

  537. If one man

  538. can save

  539. thousands of

  540. lives,

  541. it's worth

  542. doing it.

  543. But now the

  544. Philistines are

  545. really just

  546. playing with

  547. Israel.

  548. They know

  549. they can easily

  550. wipe this

  551. poor people

  552. out that have

  553. no weapons.

  554. It's just a

  555. game.

  556. That's why

  557. it's so

  558. humiliating.

  559. And if their

  560. champion goes

  561. out on the

  562. side of

  563. Israel and

  564. fails,

  565. now we've

  566. all agreed

  567. to be their

  568. slaves.

  569. In verse

  570. 11,

  571. when Saul,

  572. remember,

  573. Saul was a

  574. head taller

  575. than any

  576. other man

  577. in Israel.

  578. He was the

  579. man after

  580. Israel's heart

  581. and the

  582. only one

  583. with weapons.

  584. In verse

  585. 11,

  586. when Saul

  587. and all

  588. Israel heard

  589. these words

  590. of the

  591. Philistine,

  592. they were

  593. dismayed

  594. and greatly

  595. afraid.

  596. dismayed.

  597. Dismayed

  598. means yielding

  599. to fear,

  600. a terror

  601. felt by

  602. them,

  603. spirits that

  604. are sunken

  605. down.

  606. That's how

  607. Israel and

  608. Saul viewed

  609. the war.

  610. God's

  611. I'm afraid

  612. that many

  613. of us

  614. have taken

  615. away the

  616. wrong application

  617. from this

  618. story of

  619. David fighting

  620. Goliath.

  621. We like to

  622. imagine ourselves

  623. as David,

  624. but here's the

  625. application.

  626. That's us.

  627. We're the

  628. cowardly

  629. army.

  630. We're

  631. dismayed,

  632. sunken in

  633. spirit.

  634. Martin Luther

  635. confessed that

  636. was his

  637. weakness apart

  638. from Christ

  639. as well in

  640. that great

  641. hymn.

  642. Did we in

  643. our own

  644. strength confide?

  645. Our striving

  646. would be

  647. losing.

  648. We're not

  649. the right

  650. man on

  651. our side,

  652. the man

  653. of God's

  654. own choosing.

  655. You ask

  656. who that

  657. might be?

  658. Christ

  659. Jesus,

  660. it is

  661. he.

  662. Lord

  663. Sabaoth,

  664. the Lord

  665. of hosts

  666. is his name

  667. from age

  668. to age

  669. the same

  670. and he

  671. must win

  672. the battle.

  673. The prince

  674. of darkness

  675. grim,

  676. but in the

  677. name of

  678. Christ

  679. Jesus,

  680. we tremble

  681. not for

  682. him.

  683. The cowardly

  684. army.

  685. Fourth

  686. observation

  687. is a

  688. section that

  689. might even

  690. seem surprising

  691. and maybe

  692. unusually

  693. lengthy,

  694. so it

  695. has to

  696. mean

  697. something.

  698. It

  699. begins at

  700. verse 12.

  701. We'll

  702. call this

  703. section

  704. the father

  705. sends his

  706. son

  707. with

  708. provisions

  709. for the

  710. army.

  711. The father

  712. sends his

  713. son with

  714. provisions

  715. for the

  716. army.

  717. In

  718. verse 12

  719. we get

  720. what I

  721. believe is

  722. a second

  723. introduction.

  724. I don't

  725. think it's

  726. a flashback

  727. because it

  728. does say

  729. that David

  730. went back

  731. and forth

  732. from Saul

  733. to take

  734. care of

  735. the sheep

  736. and then

  737. back to

  738. the court

  739. of Saul

  740. to play

  741. the music.

  742. But now

  743. I think

  744. most likely

  745. because David

  746. has been

  747. anointed,

  748. he has

  749. the spirit

  750. of God,

  751. what we

  752. get is

  753. the first

  754. evidence

  755. in public

  756. that the

  757. private

  758. anointing

  759. that God

  760. put on

  761. David

  762. was in

  763. effect.

  764. The power

  765. of God

  766. is at

  767. work in

  768. this

  769. anointed

  770. king.

  771. In

  772. verse 14

  773. we're

  774. reminded

  775. David

  776. was the

  777. youngest.

  778. Remember

  779. there were

  780. four more

  781. brothers

  782. and only

  783. the,

  784. well there

  785. were eight

  786. brothers total.

  787. The three

  788. oldest went

  789. to war,

  790. therefore there's

  791. four others

  792. that weren't

  793. even old

  794. enough to go

  795. to war.

  796. So we

  797. can conclude

  798. that David

  799. was most

  800. likely pretty

  801. young,

  802. most likely

  803. a teenager.

  804. So we

  805. read in

  806. verse 15,

  807. David

  808. occasionally

  809. went and

  810. returned from

  811. Saul to

  812. feed his

  813. father's

  814. sheep at

  815. Bethlehem.

  816. Verse 16,

  817. and the

  818. Philistines

  819. drew near

  820. and presented

  821. himself

  822. forty days

  823. morning and

  824. evening.

  825. In the

  826. Bible the

  827. number forty

  828. generally

  829. signifies a

  830. completed period

  831. of testing,

  832. a probation,

  833. a trial.

  834. It's often

  835. leading then

  836. to a

  837. transformation

  838. or a

  839. big transition.

  840. In

  841. Genesis 6,

  842. it rained

  843. for forty

  844. days and

  845. forty nights.

  846. Remember,

  847. Israel was

  848. tested in

  849. the wilderness

  850. for forty

  851. years after

  852. being delivered

  853. out of

  854. slavery.

  855. We're told

  856. in verse

  857. 16 that

  858. Goliath

  859. mocked God's

  860. people,

  861. accused

  862. them,

  863. derided

  864. them twice

  865. at the

  866. start of

  867. each day

  868. and then

  869. again at

  870. the end

  871. of each

  872. day.

  873. So,

  874. children,

  875. forty days,

  876. twice a

  877. day,

  878. how many

  879. times?

  880. Eighty

  881. times God's

  882. people had

  883. to sit

  884. there and

  885. be mocked

  886. and ridiculed.

  887. In verse

  888. 17 now is

  889. the key for

  890. this passage,

  891. I believe.

  892. Then the

  893. father,

  894. Jesse,

  895. said to

  896. his son,

  897. David,

  898. take now

  899. for your

  900. brother,

  901. brothers,

  902. these

  903. provisions.

  904. See,

  905. when the

  906. forty days

  907. of

  908. mocking

  909. had

  910. come

  911. to

  912. an

  913. end.

  914. These

  915. forty days

  916. were

  917. completed.

  918. The

  919. father

  920. says to

  921. his

  922. anointed,

  923. his

  924. Messiah

  925. marked

  926. son,

  927. David,

  928. the name

  929. David

  930. means

  931. beloved,

  932. the shepherd

  933. king,

  934. go to

  935. the battlefield

  936. for your

  937. brothers

  938. and me.

  939. In verse

  940. 20 we read

  941. that David

  942. arose early

  943. in the

  944. morning.

  945. He left

  946. the sheep

  947. with the

  948. keeper.

  949. Notice

  950. how David

  951. as the

  952. anointed

  953. king is

  954. always

  955. concerned

  956. about the

  957. sheep.

  958. When he's

  959. mentioned,

  960. the sheep

  961. are mentioned

  962. with him.

  963. He makes

  964. sure that his

  965. sheep are

  966. always cared

  967. for.

  968. And he

  969. took the

  970. things and

  971. went as

  972. his father

  973. had commanded

  974. him.

  975. He paid

  976. attention to

  977. those details

  978. and he

  979. carried it

  980. all out.

  981. And he

  982. came to

  983. the camp

  984. as the

  985. army was

  986. going out

  987. to fight

  988. and shouting

  989. for battle.

  990. I believe

  991. the Israelites

  992. while they

  993. were in

  994. dismay,

  995. 40 days

  996. are now

  997. up.

  998. They're

  999. pumping

  1000. themselves

  1001. up for

  1002. action.

  1003. They're

  1004. shouting

  1005. for battle.

  1006. They're

  1007. making a

  1008. lot of

  1009. noise.

  1010. But when

  1011. David gets

  1012. there he's

  1013. also surprised

  1014. and confused

  1015. because they're

  1016. taking no

  1017. action.

  1018. Here's an

  1019. army that's

  1020. all hype,

  1021. all emotion,

  1022. and no

  1023. faith.

  1024. They're

  1025. focused on

  1026. their own

  1027. strength and

  1028. they're

  1029. cowering

  1030. back.

  1031. The army

  1032. needs a

  1033. better

  1034. warrior,

  1035. one anointed

  1036. by the

  1037. power of

  1038. God,

  1039. one that

  1040. will stand

  1041. in their

  1042. place,

  1043. who is

  1044. not focused

  1045. on worldly

  1046. power and

  1047. what the

  1048. eye can

  1049. see,

  1050. a man

  1051. of faith.

  1052. I was

  1053. interested in

  1054. the word

  1055. Jesse.

  1056. You know,

  1057. he's the

  1058. old father

  1059. now and

  1060. he's got

  1061. sons in

  1062. the battle

  1063. and he

  1064. loves

  1065. those sons.

  1066. He wants

  1067. to send

  1068. provisions

  1069. for them

  1070. and he

  1071. wants to

  1072. hear back

  1073. from them.

  1074. And how

  1075. the Lord

  1076. Jesus came

  1077. to reveal

  1078. the loveliness

  1079. of the

  1080. father.

  1081. And his

  1082. mission is

  1083. to tell

  1084. the brothers,

  1085. the father

  1086. wants to

  1087. know you're

  1088. well.

  1089. Just as

  1090. David's

  1091. taking care

  1092. of the

  1093. sheep,

  1094. the father

  1095. wants to

  1096. provide and

  1097. out of

  1098. the abundance

  1099. of his

  1100. generosity,

  1101. give to

  1102. his army,

  1103. give them

  1104. all they

  1105. need.

  1106. Of course,

  1107. with the

  1108. enemy accusing

  1109. and deriding

  1110. God's people,

  1111. they're going

  1112. to wonder

  1113. and worry

  1114. and think

  1115. the worst.

  1116. And we

  1117. can too

  1118. when we're

  1119. under attack.

  1120. That's why

  1121. I think we

  1122. love that

  1123. song so

  1124. much where

  1125. we ask,

  1126. does the

  1127. father truly

  1128. love us?

  1129. And we

  1130. respond as a

  1131. church,

  1132. he does.

  1133. Does the

  1134. father truly

  1135. love us?

  1136. He does.

  1137. The father

  1138. so loves

  1139. us that

  1140. he sent

  1141. his beloved

  1142. son,

  1143. Jesus

  1144. Christ,

  1145. the

  1146. anointed

  1147. Messiah,

  1148. to be

  1149. our

  1150. representative,

  1151. our champion,

  1152. the one

  1153. who would

  1154. stand in

  1155. our place.

  1156. And through

  1157. him,

  1158. we receive

  1159. all the

  1160. provisions

  1161. that our

  1162. loving father

  1163. has provided.

  1164. The fifth

  1165. and final

  1166. observation for

  1167. today,

  1168. I know it's

  1169. a longer

  1170. passage,

  1171. I had to

  1172. get to this

  1173. point so we

  1174. hear someone

  1175. speak truth,

  1176. and it

  1177. finally comes

  1178. from the

  1179. lips of

  1180. David.

  1181. And it's

  1182. this,

  1183. how the

  1184. first

  1185. anointed

  1186. shepherd

  1187. views the

  1188. war.

  1189. How David

  1190. as the

  1191. first

  1192. anointed

  1193. shepherd

  1194. viewed

  1195. the war.

  1196. As David

  1197. talked with

  1198. his brothers

  1199. in verse

  1200. 23,

  1201. there was

  1202. the champion,

  1203. the Philistine

  1204. of Gath,

  1205. Goliath by

  1206. name,

  1207. coming down

  1208. from the

  1209. armies of

  1210. the Philistines,

  1211. and he

  1212. spoke

  1213. according

  1214. to the

  1215. same

  1216. words.

  1217. It's

  1218. almost like

  1219. the narrator

  1220. by verse

  1221. 23 can't

  1222. even repeat

  1223. these words

  1224. again.

  1225. They're so

  1226. humiliating.

  1227. And so

  1228. David heard

  1229. them.

  1230. There's

  1231. Israel's army

  1232. making noise,

  1233. but what's

  1234. their theology?

  1235. Verse 24,

  1236. all the men

  1237. of Israel,

  1238. when they

  1239. saw the

  1240. man,

  1241. the Philistine

  1242. Goliath,

  1243. fled from

  1244. him and

  1245. were dreadfully

  1246. afraid.

  1247. Verse 25,

  1248. so the men

  1249. of Israel

  1250. said,

  1251. have you

  1252. seen this

  1253. man who

  1254. has come

  1255. up?

  1256. Surely

  1257. he has

  1258. come up

  1259. to defy

  1260. Israel.

  1261. See,

  1262. their theology

  1263. is what

  1264. you can

  1265. see,

  1266. and they're

  1267. focused on

  1268. this man.

  1269. So the

  1270. men of

  1271. Israel

  1272. are making

  1273. noise

  1274. with their

  1275. mouths,

  1276. but they're

  1277. still slaves

  1278. to what they

  1279. can see

  1280. with their

  1281. eyes.

  1282. And it

  1283. shall be

  1284. done,

  1285. what shall

  1286. be done

  1287. to the

  1288. man who

  1289. kills

  1290. him?

  1291. The king

  1292. will enrich

  1293. the great

  1294. riches and

  1295. will give

  1296. him his

  1297. daughter and

  1298. give his

  1299. father's house

  1300. exemption from

  1301. taxes in

  1302. Israel.

  1303. Notice how

  1304. even with

  1305. this worldly

  1306. enticement,

  1307. it doesn't

  1308. even come

  1309. from Saul.

  1310. That's how

  1311. passive Saul

  1312. is.

  1313. It just

  1314. comes from

  1315. the soldiers

  1316. talking about

  1317. it.

  1318. The army

  1319. has learned

  1320. the theology

  1321. of their

  1322. king.

  1323. Saul

  1324. offers what

  1325. the world

  1326. offers.

  1327. They got

  1328. what they

  1329. wanted,

  1330. a king

  1331. like all

  1332. the other

  1333. nations.

  1334. If you

  1335. can match

  1336. the best

  1337. that the

  1338. world has,

  1339. you will

  1340. get the

  1341. best of

  1342. what the

  1343. world can

  1344. offer.

  1345. Because as

  1346. Goliath said,

  1347. this is

  1348. Saul's army.

  1349. They are

  1350. slaves of

  1351. Saul.

  1352. And now

  1353. the shepherd

  1354. psalmist

  1355. spoke for

  1356. the first

  1357. time.

  1358. He bore

  1359. witness for

  1360. the first

  1361. time in

  1362. verse 26.

  1363. David

  1364. spoke.

  1365. And his

  1366. audience was

  1367. very small.

  1368. Notice

  1369. that in

  1370. verse 26.

  1371. Not on a

  1372. big platform,

  1373. but it was

  1374. just to the

  1375. men who

  1376. stood by

  1377. him.

  1378. And he

  1379. said,

  1380. what shall

  1381. be done

  1382. for the

  1383. man who

  1384. kills this

  1385. Philistine?

  1386. He saw

  1387. the real

  1388. problem.

  1389. This man

  1390. takes away

  1391. the reproach.

  1392. Or who is

  1393. it that will

  1394. defeat the

  1395. Philistine,

  1396. will take

  1397. away the

  1398. reproach

  1399. from Israel?

  1400. See,

  1401. this Goliath

  1402. has reproached.

  1403. He's

  1404. disgraced the

  1405. people of

  1406. God.

  1407. Who's going

  1408. to stand up

  1409. and put

  1410. grace back

  1411. into the

  1412. people of

  1413. God?

  1414. The people

  1415. saw

  1416. Goliath

  1417. through the

  1418. same lens

  1419. that saw.

  1420. They saw

  1421. two men

  1422. that are

  1423. tall and

  1424. attractive and

  1425. by the standards

  1426. of the world

  1427. very powerful.

  1428. But David

  1429. saw Goliath

  1430. through covenantal

  1431. terms.

  1432. David says,

  1433. for who is

  1434. this

  1435. uncircumcised

  1436. Philistine?

  1437. Who is

  1438. this man

  1439. who's outside

  1440. of God's

  1441. covenant?

  1442. The prince

  1443. of darkness

  1444. grim.

  1445. We tremble

  1446. not for him.

  1447. His rage

  1448. we can't

  1449. endure.

  1450. For lo,

  1451. his doom

  1452. is sure.

  1453. One little

  1454. word shall

  1455. fell him.

  1456. He remembered

  1457. to whom the

  1458. army belongs.

  1459. Look at what

  1460. David says.

  1461. He is defying

  1462. the armies

  1463. of the living

  1464. God.

  1465. Men,

  1466. you are not

  1467. slaves of

  1468. Saul.

  1469. God secured

  1470. you for

  1471. himself.

  1472. And God

  1473. is alive.

  1474. You are the

  1475. army of the

  1476. Lord of hosts.

  1477. He fights

  1478. for his own

  1479. glory.

  1480. He knew

  1481. the army

  1482. did not

  1483. belong to

  1484. Saul.

  1485. It belongs

  1486. to God,

  1487. Yahweh,

  1488. the great

  1489. deliverer.

  1490. These men

  1491. are looking

  1492. only at their

  1493. own weakness

  1494. and they

  1495. forgot that

  1496. the Lord

  1497. is the

  1498. Lord

  1499. Sabaoth.

  1500. The Lord

  1501. of hosts

  1502. and his

  1503. armies include

  1504. not just

  1505. these men

  1506. of Israel

  1507. but the

  1508. armies of

  1509. angels

  1510. in heaven.

  1511. When God

  1512. created the

  1513. heavens,

  1514. he created

  1515. the invisible

  1516. spiritual realm

  1517. and while

  1518. there is a

  1519. standoff

  1520. between two

  1521. men on

  1522. earth,

  1523. there is

  1524. certainly a

  1525. spiritual warfare

  1526. going on.

  1527. The kingdom

  1528. of heaven

  1529. intruding

  1530. onto this

  1531. fallen world.

  1532. We forget,

  1533. we often

  1534. just focus on

  1535. what our eyes

  1536. can see in

  1537. this world.

  1538. Remember the

  1539. army of

  1540. angels at

  1541. God's

  1542. command.

  1543. J.I.

  1544. Packer said,

  1545. heaven is the

  1546. headquarters of

  1547. these angels

  1548. where they

  1549. constantly worship

  1550. God and from

  1551. there they are

  1552. sent to render

  1553. services to

  1554. God through

  1555. the ministry he

  1556. is carrying out.

  1557. The angels

  1558. serve the

  1559. church.

  1560. The angels

  1561. serve God's

  1562. people at

  1563. God's bidding.

  1564. That's the end

  1565. of Packer's

  1566. quote.

  1567. Andrea

  1568. pointed out

  1569. to me as

  1570. we were

  1571. listening to

  1572. the McShane

  1573. Bible reading

  1574. that when

  1575. God then

  1576. had King

  1577. David's son

  1578. Solomon build

  1579. the temple

  1580. according to

  1581. the instructions

  1582. given in

  1583. 1 Kings 7

  1584. the cherubim

  1585. that stand

  1586. and guard

  1587. the ark

  1588. of the

  1589. holy of

  1590. holies

  1591. the symbolic

  1592. throne of

  1593. the lord

  1594. of hosts

  1595. each angel

  1596. was 15

  1597. feet tall.

  1598. Remember the

  1599. basketball hoop

  1600. is 10 feet.

  1601. That distance

  1602. between the

  1603. floor and

  1604. the basketball

  1605. hoop that's

  1606. 5 feet right

  1607. in the middle.

  1608. So you take

  1609. that and put

  1610. it on top

  1611. of the

  1612. basketball hoop.

  1613. Now of course

  1614. angels are

  1615. spiritual beings

  1616. they don't

  1617. have bodies

  1618. but the

  1619. ministry of

  1620. this to

  1621. God's people

  1622. is when you

  1623. approach the

  1624. temple of

  1625. God you

  1626. need to be

  1627. reminded he

  1628. is the

  1629. lord of

  1630. hosts towering

  1631. above Goliath

  1632. is the army

  1633. of God.

  1634. According to

  1635. Zechariah

  1636. 1 10

  1637. angels are

  1638. mighty warriors

  1639. of light whom

  1640. the lord sends

  1641. to patrol

  1642. planet earth.

  1643. What's the

  1644. number of

  1645. the angels?

  1646. Well God

  1647. has a vast

  1648. army of

  1649. angels.

  1650. A legion

  1651. is 5 to

  1652. 6 thousand

  1653. so we're

  1654. taking what

  1655. the scripture

  1656. has revealed

  1657. 70,000

  1658. angels.

  1659. This would

  1660. be like

  1661. taking ball

  1662. arena where

  1663. the nuggets

  1664. play for

  1665. their basketball

  1666. games and

  1667. it's four

  1668. times what

  1669. you could

  1670. pack into

  1671. the ball

  1672. arena would

  1673. be a legion

  1674. of these

  1675. angels warriors

  1676. of light.

  1677. revelation

  1678. 5 11

  1679. says the

  1680. voice of

  1681. many angels

  1682. numbering

  1683. myriads of

  1684. myriads and

  1685. thousands of

  1686. thousands.

  1687. With the

  1688. eyes of

  1689. faith we

  1690. can remember

  1691. the lord of

  1692. hosts does

  1693. not tremble

  1694. before any

  1695. man or

  1696. anything of

  1697. this world

  1698. or of the

  1699. principalities of

  1700. darkness.

  1701. God by

  1702. faith reassures

  1703. his followers

  1704. of his might

  1705. far above

  1706. that of the

  1707. enemies.

  1708. brothers and

  1709. sisters outside

  1710. of Christ we

  1711. are a

  1712. cowardly

  1713. army but

  1714. because God

  1715. is good and

  1716. loving and

  1717. gracious God

  1718. the father sent

  1719. provisions from

  1720. his home through

  1721. his beloved son

  1722. the anointed the

  1723. Messiah marked

  1724. shepherd king for

  1725. us who he calls

  1726. brothers and

  1727. sisters.

  1728. Jesus Christ

  1729. overcame the

  1730. evil one first

  1731. in the wilderness

  1732. then on the

  1733. cross.

  1734. He has

  1735. disarmed

  1736. Satan.

  1737. The powers

  1738. of darkness

  1739. no longer have

  1740. power over

  1741. God's people

  1742. and his

  1743. kingdom according

  1744. to Colossians

  1745. 2 15.

  1746. While we

  1747. failed while we

  1748. are weak

  1749. Jesus Christ

  1750. obedience his

  1751. stands in the

  1752. place of our

  1753. disobedience and

  1754. his courage

  1755. covers our

  1756. cowardice.

  1757. I want to

  1758. remind you how

  1759. Jesus Christ

  1760. the Messiah

  1761. the anointed

  1762. shepherd king

  1763. views the war

  1764. that we're in

  1765. now.

  1766. In John 18

  1767. 36 Jesus

  1768. said my

  1769. kingdom is

  1770. not of this

  1771. world.

  1772. If my

  1773. kingdom were

  1774. of this

  1775. world my

  1776. servants would

  1777. fight but

  1778. now my

  1779. kingdom is

  1780. not from

  1781. here.

  1782. In John

  1783. 17 16

  1784. our Lord

  1785. Jesus said

  1786. my disciples

  1787. are not of

  1788. this world

  1789. even as

  1790. I am not

  1791. of this

  1792. world.

  1793. From that

  1794. hymn by

  1795. Martin Luther

  1796. taking the

  1797. cue from

  1798. our Lord

  1799. Jesus we

  1800. can say

  1801. as well

  1802. though this

  1803. world with

  1804. devils filled

  1805. should threaten

  1806. to undo us

  1807. we will not

  1808. fear for God

  1809. has willed his

  1810. truth to

  1811. triumph through

  1812. us.

  1813. The body

  1814. they may

  1815. kill God's

  1816. truth abideth

  1817. still his

  1818. kingdom is

  1819. forever.

  1820. The outlook

  1821. of our Lord

  1822. Jesus Christ

  1823. changes the

  1824. way his

  1825. army views

  1826. this life

  1827. and this

  1828. world.

  1829. By his

  1830. strength I

  1831. have been

  1832. praying this

  1833. week for

  1834. myself and

  1835. for us as

  1836. a church

  1837. that the

  1838. perspective the

  1839. view what

  1840. our Lord

  1841. Jesus Christ

  1842. sees for

  1843. his church

  1844. will slowly

  1845. fill us

  1846. and become

  1847. our outlook

  1848. our view

  1849. of this

  1850. battle as

  1851. well depending

  1852. on his

  1853. strength and

  1854. let's pray that

  1855. he will do

  1856. that.

  1857. Lord we

  1858. thank you for

  1859. how you are

  1860. mighty in

  1861. battle how

  1862. you are

  1863. victorious how

  1864. you have

  1865. secured the

  1866. freedom of

  1867. your people

  1868. how we are

  1869. no longer

  1870. slaves to

  1871. fear you

  1872. have ransomed

  1873. your people

  1874. you are our

  1875. great anointed

  1876. king we

  1877. praise you that

  1878. you've not

  1879. left us

  1880. orphans you

  1881. are near your

  1882. people you

  1883. care for your

  1884. sheep we

  1885. trust ourselves

  1886. to you again

  1887. today Lord

  1888. please work in

  1889. us the view

  1890. that you have

  1891. for your

  1892. church we

  1893. ask this for

  1894. your glory in

  1895. your powerful

  1896. name amen
