  1. All the all of the men that are filling in for pastor while he's

  2. gone. And so doc is the doc is going

  3. to preach for us tonight or teach and then so get your

  4. Bibles out and what he's coming. All right, since we got so many

  5. men gone, I thought it'd be appropriate to preach on

  6. husbands or wives, submit yourself to your own husbands.

  7. But that's not what I'm going to.

  8. So we're not we're going to look at you know, usually pastor

  9. gives us about a month heads up, but this time it was a little

  10. sooner. So he just asked last week and I

  11. was just asking the Lord what, you know, what to to speak on

  12. and is that we're sitting down here constantly.

  13. We're looking at our hold fast. And so I thought it'd be

  14. appropriate just to refresh our our memories about what what

  15. that is. And I don't remember.

  16. I didn't on purpose. I didn't go back and look to see

  17. what he preached on the vision Sunday because I didn't want to,

  18. didn't want to know because if this is repetitive, then it's

  19. just that's the way it worked out.

  20. So anyway, let's turn to Second Timothy, chapter 1.

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  21. We'll start there. I'm just going to read the first

  22. 13 verses. I'm going to see if I can read

  23. as fast as Pastor Simeon you know he was that that guy could

  24. that guy could book reading the Bible, but second Timothy

    2 Timothy 1 chapter mention

  25. chapter 1 Paul an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God

  26. according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus to

  27. Timothy, my dearly beloved son, grace mercy and peace from God

  28. the Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.

  29. I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure

  30. conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my

  31. prayers night and day, greatly desiring to see thee, being

  32. mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy when I call

  33. to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which

  34. dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois and thy mother Eunice.

  35. And I am persuaded that in Thee also, wherefore I put thee in

  36. remembrance, that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in

  37. thee by the putting on of my hands.

  38. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power,

  39. and of love, and of a sound mind.

  40. Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor

  41. of me his prisoner. But be thou partaker of the

  42. afflictions of the Gospel, according to the power of God,

  43. who hath saved us and called us within holy calling, not

  44. according to our works, but according to His own purpose and

  45. grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world

  46. began, but is now made manifest by the appearing of our save of

  47. our Savior Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath

  48. brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel.

  49. Where? Whereunto I am appointed A

  50. preacher and an apostle and a teacher of the Gentiles For the

  51. which 'cause I also suffer these things.

  52. Nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed

  53. and am persuaded that he is able all he's able to keep that which

  54. I have committed unto him against that day.

  55. Hold fast the form of sound words which thou has heard of me

  56. in faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus.

  57. And that'll be our basically our text verse.

  58. But I was just thinking about thinking about holding fast and

  59. I I like you'll warf more movies and warf things like that.

  60. And I think about like the time of David and when they were

  61. fighting, they fought with, you know, hand to hand combat.

  62. And so back in Second Samuel. Let's see if I can turn there

  63. real quick. Second Samuel, I believe chapter

  64. 23, it's talking about David's mighty men.

  65. These be the names of the mighty men whom David had the

  66. Tachmanite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains, the

  67. same as Adino, the Eznite. He lift up his spear against

  68. 800, whom he slew at one time. And after him was Eleazar, the

  69. son of Dodo the Yahoo height, one of the three mighty men with

  70. David. When they defied when they

  71. defied the Philistines that were gathered together to the battle

  72. in the middle of Israel were gone away.

  73. He arose and smote the Philistines until his hand was

  74. weary and his hand clave unto the sword.

  75. And the Lord brought a great victory that day.

  76. So that's I think that would be considered holding fast.

  77. He was holding on with a a strong grip.

  78. So hold, hold means cling, grasp, grip firmly, retain.

  79. So different meanings of the word and fast in in this context

  80. with hold fast means completely or tightly.

  81. So I can just picture that with him, him, you know, hand to hand

  82. combat with that sword, his hand basically was I, I can see them

  83. just having to peel his fingers off of it because he was holding

  84. fast. He wasn't going to let that

  85. weapon go. That was his.

  86. That was his protection and his weapon.

  87. So but anyway, the that is exactly the picture Paul was

  88. giving to Timothy, I think in in this letter.

  89. And this is Paul's in prison. And this, as far as we know,

  90. this is Paul's last words that he wrote to anybody in chapter

  91. 4, Second Timothy, it says in verse four or verse 5.

  92. But watch thou in all things endure afflictions, do the work

  93. of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

  94. For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my

  95. departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight.

  96. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.

  97. So Paul is, I think even the context and the seriousness of

  98. Second Timothy as compared to First Timothy, it's much more

  99. serious and sober because he wants to get something across to

  100. Timothy as his last message to him.

  101. And Timothy being a good listener and a good follower and

  102. a good and close friend. He calls him his son Timothy.

  103. He, he listened, He wanted to listen and follow what Paul had

  104. to say. So Timothy wasn't a casual

  105. listener. He was serious in his listening.

  106. And that's something we all need to do.

  107. He traveled with Paul, he sat under his teaching, he watched

  108. his life and he heard the pure gospel straight from the

  109. apostles lips. Paul says don't let it slip,

  110. don't water it down, don't trade it for something new or popular.

  111. Hold fast. I was looking I'm going to do

  112. this from my phone because I looked up some verses just to

  113. see where hold fast is in the Bible and it was 9 verses

  114. including our our text verse first job, my righteousness, I

  115. hold fast and typically it's hold fast.

  116. It's in a positive manner where he's holding fast to his

  117. righteousness, holding fast to good things.

  118. But Jeremiah on the other hand, he says, why then is this people

  119. of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding.

  120. They hold fast deceit they refuse to return.

  121. So there's holding fast on to what's right, but there's also

  122. holding fast on to the wrong thing.

  123. And we don't want to be that person holding fast to the wrong

  124. to sin. 1st Thessalonians 521 says prove all things hold fast,

  125. that which is good. And then our verse, Second

  126. Timothy 113 Hebrews 36. But Christ as a son over his own

  127. house, whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the

  128. rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end?

  129. And then he was 414 Seeing then that we have a great high priest

  130. that is passed into the heavens. Jesus, the Son of God, let us

  131. hold fast our profession. Then Hebrews 10/23 let us hold

  132. fast the profession of our faith without wavering for he is

  133. faithful that promised it. Then a couple verses in

  134. Revelations where Jesus speaking to the churches and it's hold

  135. fast till I come. Jesus is telling him hold fast.

  136. So Paul preached that Jesus preached that and then we we

  137. definitely want to be following that.

  138. So what are we to hold fast since he's giving that command

  139. to Timothy? What was he telling Timothy to

  140. hold fast? And then in our text verse it

  141. says hold fast the form of sound words which thou has heard of me

  142. in faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus.

  143. Hold fast the form of sound words.

  144. The phrase hold fast, we already talked about means to cling

  145. tightly, to retain firmly, never let go even when pressure comes.

  146. It's it's it's active. It's an active thing that we're

  147. doing. It's the opposite of, I guess

  148. being lazy or just drifting and not doing anything with what

  149. you've been given. And what exactly are we to hold

  150. besides the for this form of sound words, form or pattern?

  151. In many translations it means a standard or a template.

  152. I was thinking of a form, as Paul would know, you lay a form

  153. out when you're going to pour some in or something like that,

  154. you want the cement to look a certain way.

  155. If you're putting in a sidewalk and the sidewalk maybe winds,

  156. those forms have to be just right.

  157. And so when you put that cement in there, it hardens, you remove

  158. the form, but that sidewalk is still the way it's supposed to

  159. be. If we follow God's word and we

  160. stick with that and holding, holding a form of sound words,

  161. then we're going to be basically, we'll be straight,

  162. we'll be, we'll be doing what God wants us to do.

  163. So Paul's teaching is very, very straightforward.

  164. It's not his opinion. He's giving what God gave him.

  165. So it's it was clear and a definite path like like that

  166. following the form of for cement.

  167. My illustration there, sound words literally means healthy,

  168. wholesome or healing words. These are teachings that produce

  169. spiritual health, not sickness. They lead to godliness and not

  170. error. So Paul is saying, cling to the

  171. pure doctrine of the gospel. When we think about that, we

  172. wanted to be clinging to holding on to the truth about Christ's

  173. death, burial, and resurrection, about salvation by grace through

  174. faith. These important doctrines that

  175. Paul was teaching through his his Gospels, the authority of

  176. the Scriptures, the holiness of God, the reality of judgment and

  177. eternal life. And there is judgment for for a

  178. Christian say, but there's also judgment, eternal judgment for

  179. the unsaved. In verse 14 says that good thing

  180. which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost, which

  181. dwelleth in us. So he was in, he was entrusting

  182. Timothy with a good doctrine given by the Holy Spirit and it

  183. was passed from Paul to Timothy, Timothy to the next person, the

  184. next person to to the next person all the way down to us.

  185. We've been given the true gospel of Jesus Christ and the the

  186. perfect word of God in the Scriptures and we are to pass

  187. that on. So I think about that and to,

  188. you know, our children, we need to be passing that on to our

  189. children so that they can pass it on to their children and

  190. future generations so that we have what's happened for the

  191. last 2000 years, just a perpetuation of the gospel going

  192. forward. And then so we know what we're

  193. all to hold fast to, how are we to hold fast?

  194. And that our verse tells us hold fast the form of sound words

  195. which thou has heard of me in faith and love, which is in

  196. Christ Jesus. Hold fast in faith and love

  197. which is in Christ Jesus. Paul doesn't just say hold fast,

  198. he tells, he tells Timothy, he tells us how in faith we hold

  199. the truth with sincere trust in the Lord Jesus.

  200. So our our faith is in the Lord Jesus.

  201. That's our first believing faith for salvation.

  202. And then it's our our faith in the Lord Jesus to follow him in

  203. our Christian life. It's not a dry intellectual

  204. knowledge. It's believing the truth with

  205. all our hearts, trusting Christ as your Lord and Savior.

  206. If you've never trusted Christ as your Savior, then Bible tells

  207. us that today is the day of salvation.

  208. So really some of the younger kids, I know most of us here on

  209. Wednesday night trusted the Lord as our Savior.

  210. But some of these younger kids may be have not.

  211. It's something that as parents, you talked with them and deal

  212. with them and, and the Holy Spirit will lead you and

  213. hopefully them to to the saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus

  214. Christ. So in faith and in love, we hold

  215. it with genuine love for Christ and then genuine love for

  216. others. So we love as a Christian, we

  217. love him because he first loved us.

  218. The Bible tells us, and but we should love others as well.

  219. And that's part of, I think, wanting to share it with our

  220. families so that they we can perpetuate the gospel, but then

  221. sharing it with others that are not saved because we love them.

  222. And that's I'm telling you, that's a hard thing for me to do

  223. because I don't know. You just see the wickedness of

  224. the world if you watch the news and you get discouraged because

  225. it's like this is such a wicked we're and these people are

  226. horrible. Well, we can't help it that

  227. they're horrible. We that's, you know, they're,

  228. they're the children of the devil.

  229. We have to love them. And so I pray for me that I'll

  230. be better at that. But anyway, in faith and in

  231. love, we don't hold fast to sound doctrine by our own

  232. strength or cleverness. We do it in Christ Jesus,

  233. relying on His power, abiding in Him, and letting His Spirit work

  234. in US and through us. And then thirdly, why must we

  235. hold fast? Paul wrote this because he saw

  236. the danger. Verses 15 through 18.

  237. This knows that all they which are in Asia be turned away from

  238. me, of whom are jealous and homogeneous.

  239. The Lord give mercy unto the House of Vanessa for us, for He

  240. offered fresh me, and was not ashamed of my chain.

  241. But when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently

  242. and found me and the Lord. Yeah, that basically I think in

  243. verse 15 thou this thou knowest that all they which are in Asia

  244. be turned away from me, of whom are Vagelis and homogenies.

  245. So Paul knew that people would be turning against Timothy as

  246. well, and he wanted to share that, that he needs to be

  247. prepared. He needs to be able to stand

  248. against bulls and sheep clothing in the midst of the church

  249. against those that are outside the church that are attacking

  250. him. And he needs to have the

  251. strength to do that and not fall away from the truth that he had

  252. learned from Paul. So it's very similar in our day

  253. where we have the pressures of the the culture pressures of

  254. churches that have gone away from what's right and teaching

  255. the, the true word of God and are trying to, you know, work,

  256. work up spiritual spirituality with music and the lights and

  257. what we've all talked about. And you know, pastors talked

  258. about that many times having a rock concert to to try and draw

  259. people in, but you're not drawing them to the Savior.

  260. You're drawing them to a performer and trying to build a

  261. crowd and maybe make money through what's supposed to be a

  262. church ministry. So things like that our culture

  263. like they call biblical truth hate speech and we be we need to

  264. be able to stand against that false teachers who twist the

  265. scripture and fit modern desires, temptation to be

  266. relevant like being the cool guy in the skinny jeans and T-shirt

  267. up here. Preaching or so-called preaching

  268. and personal trials that make us want to back off.

  269. Maybe we're going through some real struggles in our life or

  270. finances or health or whatever it might be and makes us want to

  271. back off from serving the Lord and holding fast.

  272. So we want to be careful about that.

  273. If we let go of sound doctrine, we lose our anchor and church

  274. becomes powerless. Church has become powerless,

  275. believers become unstable, and the gospel loses its saving

  276. power in our proclamation. So if we're trying to spread the

  277. gospel, if we don't have the power of the Holy Spirit and

  278. we've lost that, then we're not going to be able to proclaim

  279. that gospel in a way that it should be proclaimed.

  280. But when we hold fast, we stand firm like a lighthouse in the

  281. storm, guiding others to safety. And that's what we should be as

  282. a church, a lighthouse guiding others to safety.

  283. And we, I think our church, you know, pastor does a good job of

  284. encouraging us to be that lighthouse.

  285. And we are out here with the Bibles and we're Brian's group

  286. knocking on doors. And eventually when we have

  287. room, we'll have a bus ministry. And we're looking forward to

  288. that day. That's always a lot of fun.

  289. It brings a lot of excitement to the church when you could run

  290. the buses. So how do we hold fast today?

  291. What's the practical application?

  292. Know the Word of God, read, study, and memorize Scripture.

  293. Second Timothy 2:15. I'm sure you you probably know

    2 Timothy 2:15

  294. these verses, but I'll read a couple of these to you.

  295. Second Timothy 2:15. Says Study to show thyself

    2 Timothy 2:15

  296. approved unto God, a Workman that needeth not to be ashamed,

  297. rightly dividing the word of truth.

  298. And second Timothy 3:15 it says in that from a child thou has

    2 Timothy 3:15

  299. known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto

  300. salvation through faith, which is in Christ Jesus.

  301. So Timothy was taught by his grandmother and his mother the

  302. Scriptures and he knew them from a young child.

  303. So that's important that we know the word of God and we memorize

  304. it. Now I'm having a lot harder time

  305. memorizing the Bible as I'm getting as not as young as I

  306. used to be. So I struggle with that every

  307. week. I'm like, man, how many verses

  308. to say and I look at the date and the last when was the last

  309. time you remember you said a verse in your book who was a

  310. month ago? I really need to work on that.

  311. You know, I take the brain supplements and everything.

  312. It just doesn't doesn't doesn't seem to work.

  313. Believe and obey. Let the truth shape your life.

  314. Live it out in faith and love. Titus 38 turn there.

  315. Titus 38 says this is a faithful saying, and these things I will

  316. that thou affirm constantly that they which have believed in God

  317. might be careful to maintain good works.

  318. These things are good and profitable unto men.

  319. So believe and obey doing the works that we're supposed to do

  320. as Christians teach and pass it on.

  321. Talked about that earlier teaching our children, but back

  322. in Deuteronomy chapter 6. Go there.

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  323. I'm just going to read it when I get there.

  324. So if you don't get there, sorry about that.

  325. Here, O Lord, the Lord our God is 1 Lord.

  326. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and

  327. with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

  328. And these words which I have, which I command thee this day,

  329. shall be in thine heart, And thou shalt teach them diligently

  330. unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest

  331. in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when

  332. thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

  333. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they

  334. shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

  335. So we want to pass that on. And so the verse 9.

  336. And thou shalt write them upon thy post of thy house and on thy

  337. gates. So it's always nice when you go,

  338. you go to somebody's house and they have there's Bible verses

  339. around. It's just, you know, nice to see

  340. that or the Bible is always there somewhere prominent in the

  341. house. So that's, that's a good thing

  342. and a blessing. So they're, they're teaching it,

  343. passing it on, rely on the Holy Spirit, pray for the Holy

  344. Spirit's power daily. And he's the one who keeps us

  345. faithful. Help us to hold fast by by

  346. having the Holy Spirit's power, and then stand even when it

  347. costs. Be willing to suffer for the

  348. gospel just as Paul did. Don't be ashamed of Christ or

  349. his words. Second Timothy 112 Back in our

  350. text chapter there. Second Timothy 112 for the which

  351. 'cause I also suffer these things.

  352. Nevertheless, I am not ashamed for I know whom I have believed

  353. and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have

  354. committed unto him against that day and then hold fast, hold

  355. fast. So it's important that we, we

  356. hold fast to sound the form of sound words or the the Bible.

  357. And basically that's the sound, the most sound words you can

  358. have is from God's Word. And we don't want to drift with

  359. the culture, don't want to compromise to make our lives

  360. easier. Don't trade healthy truth for

  361. empty promises. So that's it.

  362. Hold fast in faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

  363. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, Lord, we love

  364. you and we thank you for your goodness to us.

  365. Thank you for this. Just a reminder of our need to

  366. hold fast in the truths of your word and the truth of salvation

  367. that provided by you and in the truth of the the importance of

  368. sharing the gospel and perpetuating it through our

  369. families, see our children, our grandchildren saved and

  370. spreading that to future generations.

  371. Lord, I pray you'd help us to do that.

  372. I pray you just work in our hearts throughout the rest of

  373. the week. We do pray for the men down in

  374. Belize and we thank you for them, their willingness to go

  375. down there and work. Pray that you would just bless

  376. the work that they do there. Bless the rest of this evening

  377. and we thank you for your word. Again, in Jesus name we pray.

  378. Amen. I don't know, it's been several

  379. months now, maybe maybe even a couple years.

  380. There was a Baptist pastor that came out and he was pretty proud

  381. of the fact that he was switching to Catholicism.

  382. You guys remember hearing about that.

  383. There's been a few few people like that in in the in the news

  384. and things like that. But how does that happen?

  385. How did you how do you I'm not Paul was very clear.

  386. He said some of them went out from us because they were not of

  387. us. Right.

  388. So that that's very likely the reason.

  389. But how do you grow up in a Baptist Church, hear the gospel

  390. preached here, good doctrine, I would assume preached and then

  391. be a pastor yourself and then go and say, you know what, the

  392. Catholic, the Catholic religion. I think that's, that's the truth

  393. there. You're not holding fast.

  394. And I, I was thinking this, you know, when you used to go to

  395. your grandparents house, My grandparents when we grew up, we

  396. lived in Indiana and they lived in Iron Mountain, MI.

  397. I was like 8 hours away. And every time without failing

  398. it, I'm sure everybody that doesn't live near their

  399. grandparents hears this. Every time we saw them.

  400. What was their phrase? Ma, you're getting so big when

  401. you're looking at each other, you don't, you don't see each

  402. other grow. And you, you know, your, your

  403. siblings, you don't seem to change that much day-to-day.

  404. But when you don't see somebody for a year and then you see

  405. them, there's a big change. That's what happens when you

  406. don't hold fast. You may not see the changes

  407. day-to-day, but we pastor has said it many times.

  408. If you're not going forward, what's happening?

  409. You're you're going backwards, you're backsliding.

  410. And Proverbs warns about it. The backsliding, that's not

  411. hold. That's what not holding fast is.

  412. And so you know, you don't hold fast.

  413. And I don't mean go to church. I mean hold fast.

  414. That truth that we've been given from God.

  415. What happens? Somebody sees you a year later

  416. and they're shocked at how far you've drifted, right?

  417. We may not see it ourselves, but that's what happens when we

  418. don't hold fast. I think it's very important.

  419. We're not passing down. He said, mentioned this right at

  420. the very end that we pass the past, this truth down generation

  421. to generation. We're not passing down herbal

  422. remedies, right? We're passing the truth of the

  423. gospel from generation to generation to generation.

  424. And he says that that good thing which was committed unto thee,

  425. this was not just, you know, a recipe that hey, it's not

  426. written down. So my mom had had some of those.

  427. I'm sure others have secret, secret ingredients and secret

  428. recipes that I'll pass down to one of my daughters and she'll

  429. be the only one that knows it. That's not what this is.

  430. This is the truth that Christ died for our sins.

  431. And he says that good thing which was committed unto thee,

  432. keep it by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in US.

  433. That's a really, really powerful verse fact that we cannot do it

  434. by ourselves. You're not going to be able to

  435. keep that truth and and and hold fast and do all that on our own.

  436. Keep it by the Holy Ghost which dwell within us.

  437. Very important part of that verse there.

  438. But yeah, that's great, Great reminder.

  439. But these are things that we do on a daily basis.

  440. I was just talking to a guy at work and he said I can't, I just

  441. don't want to go to church and not know.

  442. He didn't grow up in church, but he said I don't want to go to

  443. church and not understand what's being talked about.

  444. So once I kind of have a grasp on the Bible, then I'll start

  445. going to church. And I said, you'll, you'll never

  446. have a full grasp on the Bible. A, if you're not saved, but B,

  447. if you don't just start sitting under the truth of the word of

  448. God. But for those of us that are

  449. coming to church on Sundays, Sundays not enough.

  450. You need to be in God's Word daily.

  451. And we see lots of that in the Bible.

  452. But so that we can keep that, that good thing, we can hold

  453. fast to that which was committed unto us.

  454. That's how you you read the Bible and you're meditating on

  455. it and the Holy Spirit's working on you.

  456. And that's what motivates us and gets us eager to go out and

  457. share it with others. We don't have that on our own

  458. only through the Holy Spirit and that, that power that that he

  459. gives us will we go out and share it with others.

  460. And that's how we keep that good thing that was committed unto

  461. us. We, we keep it going.

  462. Not a religion as this is the only true Christianity is the

  463. only faith that is not religion. And that's a, that's a pretty

  464. powerful thing. There's so many religions out

  465. there that are all just man made.

  466. They're, they're, they are trying to perpetuate it because

  467. it's not truth. They have to keep it, keep it

  468. going, keep it exciting because it's not true.

  469. We have the Holy Spirit that is ready to do it through us if we,

  470. if we let them. And so that's a, that's a good

  471. reminder and a good challenge to us, not just to keep it in our

  472. hearts or to know what the truth is, which is why it's so

  473. important that, you know, God puts us in our own little

  474. corner. You know the song Brighten the

  475. corner where you are? I always thought it said right

  476. in the corner where you are. When I was a kid, I didn't know

  477. what the song meant, but brighten the corner where you

  478. are. Most of us will never be in that

  479. corner, right? I forget what school you're at,

  480. Brother Paul, but I'll probably never even step foot in that

  481. school. But that's your corner.

  482. He'll never meet most of the guys at Columbia Gas, but that's

  483. my corner. And we each have our own little

  484. corner that we are entrusted to, to keep, to hold fast and to to

  485. give that gospel to those in our corner.

  486. So great reminder. Go ahead and stand with me.

  487. We'll play a couple verses of invitation.

  488. And if God has spoken to your heart, you come forward and deal

  489. with Him.
