  1. Our sermon passage for today is the whole chapter, 1 Samuel 24.

  2. ! I'll read it trusting that it's God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, sufficient word

  3. ! That he's preserved for us over every generation.

  4. And in the hand of the Holy Spirit, it's the sword.

  5. It's powerful.

  6. It cuts through where no man's words can pierce.

  7. All right.

  8. We read in 1 Samuel 24, beginning at verse 1.

  9. Now it happened, when Saul had returned from following the Philistines, that it was told

  10. him, saying, Take note, David is in the wilderness of En Gedi.

  11. Then Saul took 3,000 chosen men from all Israel and went to seek David and his men in the rocks

  12. of the wild goats.

  13. So he came to the sheepfolds by the road, and there was a cave, and Saul went in to attend

  14. to his needs.

  15. David and his men were staying in the recesses of the cave.

  16. Then the men of David said to him, This is the day in which the Lord said to you, Behold,

  17. I will deliver the enemy into your hand, that you may do to him as it seems good to you.

  18. And David arose and secretly cut off a corner of Saul's robe.

  19. Now it happened afterwards that David's heart troubled him because he had cut Saul's robe.

  20. And he said to his men, The Lord forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the Lord's

  21. anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the Lord.

  22. So David restrained his servants with these words and did not allow them to rise against

  23. Saul.

  24. And Saul got up from the cave and went on his way.

  25. David also arose afterward, went out of the cave and called out to Saul, saying, My Lord,

  26. the king.

  27. And when Saul looked behind him, David stood with his face to the earth and bowed down.

  28. And David said to Saul, Why do you listen to the words of men who say, Indeed, David seeks

  29. your harm?

  30. Look, this day your eyes have seen that the Lord delivered you today into my hand in the

  31. cave and someone urged me to kill you.

  32. But my eye spared you.

  33. And I said, I will not stretch out my hand against the Lord, for he is the Lord's anointed.

  34. Moreover, my father, see.

  35. Yes, see the corner of your robe in my hand.

  36. For in that I cut off the corner of your robe and did not kill you.

  37. Know that there is neither evil nor rebellion in my hand, and I have not sinned against you.

  38. Yet you hunt my life to take it.

  39. Let the Lord judge between you and me, and let the Lord avenge you on me.

  40. But my hand shall not be against you.

  41. As the proverb of the ancient says, Wickedness proceeds from the wicked, but my hand shall

  42. not be against you.

  43. After whom has the king of Israel come out?

  44. Whom do you pursue?

  45. A dog?

  46. A dead dog?

  47. A flea?

  48. Therefore let the Lord be judge, and judge between you and me, and see, and plead my case,

  49. and deliver me out of your hand.

  50. So it was when David had finished speaking these words to Saul that Saul said, Is that

  51. your voice?

  52. My son David.

  53. And Saul lifted up his voice and wept.

  54. And he said to David, You are more righteous than I, for you have rewarded me with good,

  55. whereas I have rewarded you with evil.

  56. And you have shown this day how you have dealt well with me.

  57. For when the Lord delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me.

  58. For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him get away safely?

  59. Therefore, may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done to me this day.

  60. And now I know indeed that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall

  61. be established in your hand.

  62. Therefore swear now to me by the Lord that you will not cut off my descendants after me,

  63. and that you will not destroy my name from my father's house.

  64. So David swore to Saul, and Saul went home.

  65. But David and his men went up to the stronghold.

  66. The word of God for the people of God.

  67. Thanks be to God.

  68. Please be seated.

  69. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of the Lord shall endure forever.

  70. Let's pray.

  71. Oh Lord, we ask that you please work mightily through the preaching of your word.

  72. We ask that you take the truth in your word, Lord, that you open our eyes, our minds, our

  73. hearts to see Christ, to receive Christ.

  74. We pray that you please help the preacher to lift up Christ, to give your people Christ.

  75. And Lord, we pray that we can leave here trusting more in Christ, looking forward to his kingdom,

  76. and enjoying the status we have as citizens in the kingdom of Jesus Christ, even while we're

  77. sojourners and pilgrims on this earth.

  78. We ask this for your glory.

  79. Amen.

  80. Amen.

  81. Amen.

  82. Well, we humans are perpetual waiters.

  83. Someone has pointed out how even with technology and all the shortcuts and the efficiency, we

  84. still find ourselves waiting and waiting and waiting for many things, don't we?

  85. I think this is wired into who we are.

  86. We spent childhood waiting for the freedom of adulthood, only to spend adulthood waiting

  87. for retirement, for the weekend, or for some change in our situation.

  88. And as we wait for different things in this life, it's very easy in our flesh to look to

  89. worldly things as a fix.

  90. Someone described waiting as a faint kind of death.

  91. To wait is to die slowly because it drains out the life we have in the present.

  92. If we are always waiting, it's like we are merely enduring life.

  93. We often are waiting for some new king or new regime or new change, solutions, leaders, money,

  94. status, something that we think will help, but none of those things can actually save.

  95. In Lamentations chapter 3, verses 25 and 26, we have this wonderful promise.

    Lamentations 3:25

  96. The Lord is good to those who wait on him.

  97. The soul who seeks him.

  98. So there is a type of waiting on the Lord that is good.

  99. When our soul is seeking him first, his kingdom, not a fix of this world.

  100. It's good that a person should hope and wait quietly for the kingdom of the Lord.

  101. It's a quiet confidence that the outcome is already secured by the better king.

  102. Chapter 4 causes us to do that.

  103. To put our hope in a better king.

  104. A king who is coming.

  105. And that's the title for our sermon today.

  106. An encouragement for you and me today.

  107. We look back at the first coming of Jesus.

  108. We also look forward longingly with hope in his second coming.

  109. So brothers and sisters in the Lord, be encouraged.

  110. From this chapter, a better king is coming.

  111. Four observations as we look at this passage.

  112. First, a better king is coming.

  113. A king whose heart loves God more than anything he can grab in this world.

  114. A better king is coming.

  115. A king whose heart loves God more than anything he can grab in this world.

  116. Let's look back at verse 1.

  117. We read,

  118. Now it happened when Saul had returned from following the Philistines.

  119. Remember, that's where we left off in chapter 23.

  120. Saul and his men were encircling the rock of escape about to capture David.

  121. And then a messenger says,

  122. Hurry, the Philistines are invading Judah.

  123. So all those men turn around and go fight off the real enemy.

  124. And we remember right before that,

  125. that Saul loved to do one thing day after day after day.

  126. And that's chase David, hunt David down.

  127. So as soon as he's driven off the Philistines,

  128. apparently successfully by God's power,

  129. Saul returns to the thing he loves to do every day.

  130. And that's find David again.

  131. And there are some messengers at work.

  132. Look at verse 1.

  133. It was told him.

  134. And this is a pattern we see.

  135. Skip forward a couple more chapters.

  136. Those Ziphites, again, in these rocky caves,

  137. they go back out of their way to Gibeah to tattle on David to Saul.

  138. This is a repeating pattern.

  139. And they say,

  140. Take note, David is in the wilderness of En Gedi.

  141. Verse 2.

  142. Who then saw took 3,000 chosen men from all Israel

  143. and went to seek David and his men in the rocks of the wild goats.

  144. In this region, there were apparently these many caves.

  145. Some of them had a big mouth,

  146. and you could bring an entire little flock of sheep in there

  147. to get out of the heat of the desert and the wilderness.

  148. They could enjoy a little bit of shade.

  149. Or in the other months, if it's snowing and cold,

  150. it provides a little bit of shelter.

  151. And it was just a place where maybe like Waterton Canyon,

  152. you can see these wild goats or longhorn sheep as you go there.

  153. An amazing place to hike around

  154. and so many places to hide.

  155. In verse 3,

  156. What does your translation say that Saul went in to do?

  157. Well, in the Hebrew, it literally says,

  158. Saul went in to cover his feet.

  159. And the feet are meaning like cover your lower parts.

  160. It was a polite way of saying a lot of different things.

  161. It became an idiom.

  162. Go and cover the lower parts.

  163. Or cover your feet.

  164. Matthew Henry, maybe because he's in that Puritan era

  165. and he's being overly British about it,

  166. he says that he was just, you know,

  167. laying his robe maybe like over his feet

  168. so he can be in the fetal position and stay warm.

  169. But I think a better interpretation,

  170. we can take our cue from Scripture itself in Judges 3.24.

  171. We're told of another wicked king,

  172. King Eglon.

  173. And they said he went up to the upper room

  174. to use the bathroom,

  175. but they used that exact same phrase.

  176. He went up there to cover his feet.

  177. And so whether he actually has the robe,

  178. you know, pulled down over his feet

  179. isn't necessarily implied.

  180. It could mean he takes off the royal garment,

  181. puts it hanging up on the rocks out of the way.

  182. And David and his men were staying in the recesses

  183. of that same cave.

  184. Can you picture this, kids?

  185. And I wonder from their perspective what that was like.

  186. You hear these men coming,

  187. oh man, we might be trapped here.

  188. Should we try to get out quick and go somewhere else?

  189. Like when you're playing hide and seek,

  190. you know you're in a dead end.

  191. You got to find a way out.

  192. Maybe it was too late.

  193. We don't know.

  194. Somehow they ended up that way.

  195. They're hiding now in the shadows

  196. and the recesses of the cave.

  197. And here comes, you know,

  198. maybe not the whole 3,000,

  199. but at least the elite bodyguards with Saul.

  200. And they probably give him his privacy,

  201. give him a little distance.

  202. And there's Saul inside the cave

  203. with David's men hiding inside that same cave.

  204. Verse four,

  205. then the men of David said to him,

  206. probably in a whisper,

  207. you know how it can echo in a cave,

  208. this day of which the Lord said to you,

  209. behold, I will deliver the enemy into your hand

  210. that you may do to him as it seems good to you.

  211. So David's men are giving him counsel.

  212. They're saying, we are all fugitives.

  213. We're exiled.

  214. We don't have a place to lay down our head

  215. one night in a row.

  216. We're living here on hard rocks in these caves.

  217. Let's end all of our misery once and for all.

  218. If you won't do it for yourself, do it for us.

  219. You can almost hear them saying,

  220. God has put your enemy right here in front of you

  221. for the slaughter.

  222. Verse four says,

  223. David arose.

  224. So I wonder if the men thought he's going to do it.

  225. And he starts walking over toward where Saul is

  226. and he's got something sharp,

  227. some sharp blade in his hand,

  228. maybe a smaller dagger,

  229. something like that,

  230. if Goliath's sword would be inconvenient

  231. at this time maybe.

  232. And instead of killing Saul,

  233. could have done that in any number of ways.

  234. He's a veteran warrior.

  235. He'd gone out slaying the enemies of the nation

  236. and come back victoriously many times.

  237. Instead, David secretly cut off

  238. a corner of Saul's robe.

  239. Literally in Hebrew it says,

  240. David cut off the wing of his robe.

  241. You've heard this before.

  242. You remember in the book of Ruth,

  243. where Ruth comes next to Boaz

  244. and she says, cover me with your wing.

  245. You know, the tip of the robe.

  246. And cover that over me.

  247. And that becomes imagery of God

  248. covering his beloved.

  249. You know, like the wings of the eagle.

  250. Or Jesus said, even like a mother hen, you know,

  251. putting the wings around my people.

  252. In Sunday school, Professor John

  253. brought an actual tassel

  254. that has the Torah, the Jewish law.

  255. And that was the instruction

  256. that you will put the law on these wings,

  257. these corners of your robe.

  258. And it also reminds you of another tearing of a robe

  259. in this same book.

  260. Do you remember that one?

  261. How the prophet Samuel walked away from King Saul

  262. and Saul reached back and grabbed

  263. and tore off the corner of his robe.

  264. So this motif is developing

  265. and it's very symbolic.

  266. Verse five says,

  267. it now happened afterward

  268. that David's heart troubled him

  269. because he had cut off

  270. Saul's robe.

  271. He didn't take his life,

  272. but he did take

  273. other things from him.

  274. Representing the law,

  275. the kingdom,

  276. the royal garments.

  277. And David's heart is now troubled,

  278. sensitive

  279. before the Lord.

  280. When the spirit

  281. of the holy God

  282. lives within

  283. a saved

  284. sinner,

  285. God's redeeming grace

  286. makes the believer

  287. tremble

  288. at the thought

  289. of committing

  290. even a small

  291. wrongdoing

  292. against God.

  293. You've experienced this,

  294. haven't you?

  295. The Holy Spirit

  296. indwelling a believer.

  297. He does not

  298. let our conscience

  299. be okay with that,

  300. with sinning against him.

  301. Well,

  302. while we don't have more insights

  303. into David's heart

  304. in this moment,

  305. there's a wonderful

  306. application for us.

  307. believers who have

  308. the Holy Spirit

  309. indwelling us.

  310. In 1 John 3.15,

  311. we're told,

  312. whoever hates his brother

  313. is a murderer.

  314. And you know

  315. that no murderer

  316. has eternal life

  317. abiding in him.

  318. Verse 6 picks up,

  319. and he said to his men,

  320. the Lord forbid

  321. that I should do this thing

  322. to my master,

  323. the Lord's

  324. Messiah,

  325. the Lord's

  326. anointed.

  327. That's what's

  328. on David's mind.

  329. To stretch out

  330. my hand against him,

  331. seeing he is

  332. the Messiah

  333. of the Lord.

  334. He is

  335. the anointed.

  336. Verse 7,

  337. so David restrained

  338. his servants

  339. with these words.

  340. David went over

  341. and got a piece

  342. of the robe,

  343. but his men

  344. were ready

  345. to do this

  346. themselves now.

  347. He's having to

  348. hold them back.

  349. And these words

  350. reminded them all,

  351. it's God

  352. who anoints.

  353. It's God

  354. who gives

  355. delegated power

  356. to a steward.

  357. Don't sin

  358. against the Lord,

  359. no matter how

  360. evil Saul is.

  361. He did not

  362. allow them

  363. to rise

  364. against Saul,

  365. and Saul

  366. got away

  367. for free

  368. that time.

  369. He got up

  370. from the cave

  371. and went

  372. on his way.

  373. If they're

  374. whispering this

  375. entire time,

  376. I wonder how

  377. much arguing

  378. and fighting

  379. there is after

  380. that.

  381. I mean,

  382. if you're David,

  383. you might have

  384. a mutiny

  385. on your hands.

  386. This should

  387. have been it.

  388. You blew it.

  389. How are we

  390. ever going to

  391. trust our

  392. captain again?

  393. This guy

  394. has no

  395. common sense.

  396. We're at war.

  397. We don't know

  398. the exact

  399. inspiration

  400. for all the

  401. Psalms,

  402. but we do

  403. know the

  404. occasion

  405. and the

  406. setting of

  407. them

  408. in the

  409. wilderness

  410. and prayer

  411. and asking

  412. the Lord

  413. to judge.

  414. These are

  415. common themes

  416. and even

  417. if it's

  418. a different

  419. psalmist,

  420. it's the

  421. same

  422. Holy Spirit

  423. breathing out

  424. the Word

  425. of God.

  426. In Psalm

    Psalms 119:161

  427. 119,

  428. verse 161,

  429. which we read

  430. as part of our

  431. call to worship

  432. today,

  433. says this,

  434. Princes

  435. or noblemen

  436. like Saul

  437. persecute me

  438. without a

  439. cause,

  440. but my

  441. heart

  442. stands in

  443. awe

  444. of your

  445. word.

  446. It's the

  447. Word of

  448. God,

  449. the good

  450. law of

  451. God

  452. that's

  453. keeping

  454. David

  455. in check

  456. by the

  457. power of

  458. the Spirit.

  459. Psalm 37

  460. is a

  461. Psalm of

  462. David

  463. with this

  464. setting as

  465. its occasion

  466. and in this

  467. Psalm,

  468. David

  469. sings,

  470. rest in the

  471. Lord and

  472. wait patiently

  473. for him.

  474. Do not

  475. fret because

  476. of men

  477. who prosper

  478. in their

  479. way.

  480. There's

  481. David now

  482. even reflecting

  483. back and

  484. singing to

  485. rest in the

  486. Lord and

  487. wait patiently

  488. on him.

  489. Do not

  490. fret because

  491. of evil

  492. men.

  493. Spurgeon

  494. commented,

  495. he who can

  496. sing to

  497. God in

  498. the recesses

  499. of a cave

  500. will not

  501. be tempted

  502. to grab

  503. the crown

  504. by the

  505. hand of

  506. murder.

  507. Sing to

  508. the Lord.

  509. Preach

  510. to your

  511. own soul.

  512. Rest in

  513. God.

  514. Wait patiently

  515. on him.

  516. David knew

  517. that he

  518. who waits

  519. for God

  520. loses

  521. nothing

  522. by our

  523. patience.

  524. In

  525. Matthew

  526. 4,

  527. our Lord

  528. Jesus Christ

  529. was offered

  530. the kingdoms

  531. of this

  532. world

  533. by the

  534. prince of

  535. this world,

  536. Satan.

  537. And our

  538. Lord Jesus

  539. Christ,

  540. King

  541. Jesus,

  542. the

  543. Messiah,

  544. the

  545. anointed

  546. one,

  547. he battled,

  548. he fought

  549. back with

  550. God's

  551. word,

  552. God's

  553. law,

  554. the first

  555. of the

  556. Ten

  557. Commandments,

  558. also this

  559. theme of

  560. Deuteronomy

  561. 6,

  562. the Shema.

  563. And he

  564. told Satan,

  565. you shall

  566. worship the

  567. Lord your

  568. God and

  569. him only

  570. shall you

  571. serve.

  572. The Lord

  573. will strengthen

  574. you and me

  575. too,

  576. brothers and

  577. sisters,

  578. by his

  579. spirit and

  580. his word

  581. hidden in

  582. our heart

  583. that we

  584. may not

  585. sin against

  586. God.

  587. By God's

  588. power and

  589. God's grace,

  590. this will be a

  591. testimony for

  592. each of us.

  593. As Matthew

  594. Henry put it,

  595. a whole

  596. kingdom will

  597. never be

  598. worth a

  599. sin.

  600. A better

  601. king is

  602. coming,

  603. a king whose

  604. heart loves

  605. God more

  606. than anything

  607. he can grab

  608. for himself

  609. in this

  610. world.

  611. Second,

  612. a better

  613. king is

  614. coming,

  615. a king

  616. who will

  617. restore

  618. honor to

  619. the office

  620. he will

  621. fill.

  622. A king

  623. is coming

  624. who will

  625. restore

  626. honor for

  627. the office

  628. that he

  629. himself will

  630. fill.

  631. Isn't that

  632. what David's

  633. doing?

  634. Look at

  635. verse 8.

  636. What happens

  637. next is not

  638. what you would

  639. expect.

  640. It's something

  641. you'd read

  642. in the Bible.

  643. David also

  644. arose afterward

  645. and went out

  646. of the cave.

  647. I wonder

  648. if his men

  649. approved of

  650. this decision

  651. next.

  652. I mean,

  653. think of the

  654. options available

  655. to Saul

  656. and these men,

  657. do you think

  658. these 3,000

  659. choice men

  660. like being

  661. away from

  662. their families

  663. going around

  664. this wilderness

  665. area?

  666. There's the

  667. target.

  668. You can

  669. almost hear

  670. their bow

  671. is getting

  672. pulled back.

  673. There he is

  674. right there.

  675. David steps

  676. out into

  677. the wide

  678. open.

  679. not only

  680. does he

  681. make himself

  682. visible,

  683. he calls

  684. out to

  685. Saul.

  686. And if

  687. that's not

  688. shocking enough,

  689. his words

  690. and his

  691. posture

  692. certainly

  693. elevate it.

  694. Look at

  695. what he

  696. says.

  697. I'm going

  698. to summarize

  699. some of

  700. them,

  701. but I

  702. want you

  703. to see

  704. each one

  705. very carefully.

  706. In

  707. verse 8,

  708. he says,

  709. my lord,

  710. see,

  711. you're the

  712. ruler here

  713. and I'm

  714. your servant,

  715. the king.

  716. he has

  717. a high

  718. regard

  719. for the

  720. office

  721. that crazy

  722. Saul holds.

  723. And look

  724. what's next.

  725. He's stooped

  726. with his

  727. face to

  728. the earth,

  729. bowed

  730. down.

  731. Three

  732. powerful

  733. descriptions

  734. in a row

  735. of his

  736. posture.

  737. He's

  738. restoring

  739. honor to

  740. the office

  741. of king

  742. that Saul

  743. has so

  744. disgraced.

  745. In

  746. verse 10,

  747. he calls

  748. Saul the

  749. Lord's

  750. Messiah,

  751. the Lord's

  752. anointed.

  753. In

  754. verse 11,

  755. he calls

  756. Saul my

  757. father.

  758. And in

  759. verse 14,

  760. he calls

  761. him the

  762. king of

  763. Israel.

  764. David is

  765. restoring

  766. honor to

  767. this very

  768. office that

  769. David himself

  770. will fill

  771. next for

  772. Israel.

  773. He starts

  774. off in

  775. verse 9 of

  776. this speech

  777. by telling

  778. Saul,

  779. why do

  780. you listen

  781. to the

  782. words of

  783. men who

  784. say,

  785. indeed,

  786. David

  787. seeks

  788. your

  789. harm.

  790. Now,

  791. whether

  792. there's

  793. spies going

  794. back and

  795. forth or

  796. gossip or

  797. rumors or

  798. stuff like

  799. that,

  800. we don't

  801. know.

  802. Someone

  803. pointed out

  804. in Bible

  805. study,

  806. maybe it's

  807. him helping

  808. Saul save

  809. face a

  810. little bit,

  811. but he's

  812. telling Saul,

  813. beware of

  814. bad counsel,

  815. whether it's

  816. your own

  817. crazy mind

  818. or these

  819. spies,

  820. the Ziphites

  821. and others

  822. going back

  823. and forth.

  824. those voices

  825. are lying

  826. to you.

  827. They're

  828. bearing false

  829. witness about

  830. me.

  831. You've got

  832. it all

  833. wrong.

  834. David now

  835. shows him,

  836. I can

  837. prove I

  838. don't seek

  839. your harm

  840. in verse

  841. 10.

  842. Look,

  843. this day

  844. your eyes

  845. have seen

  846. that the

  847. Lord delivered

  848. you today

  849. into my

  850. hand in

  851. the cave

  852. and someone

  853. urged me

  854. to kill

  855. you,

  856. but my

  857. eye spared

  858. you and

  859. I said I

  860. will not

  861. stretch out

  862. my hand

  863. against my

  864. Lord,

  865. for he

  866. is the

  867. Lord's

  868. anointed.

  869. I wonder

  870. what David

  871. is recalling

  872. here by

  873. using this

  874. word over

  875. and over

  876. and over

  877. anointed,

  878. anointed,

  879. anointed,

  880. Messiah.

  881. I wonder

  882. if he's

  883. remembering

  884. the oil

  885. that flowed

  886. down his

  887. head even

  888. before he

  889. could grow

  890. a beard

  891. when he

  892. was anointed

  893. by the

  894. prophet

  895. Samuel.

  896. The

  897. spirit of

  898. God upon

  899. him mightily

  900. in battle

  901. and playing

  902. the harp.

  903. The

  904. promise of

  905. an anointed

  906. one,

  907. a Messiah.

  908. How much

  909. of scripture

  910. David knew

  911. that seed

  912. of Eve,

  913. that promised

  914. one that's

  915. coming,

  916. that seed

  917. of Abraham,

  918. that seed

  919. that would

  920. now be

  921. coming through

  922. David's line

  923. one day,

  924. the Lord's

  925. anointed.

  926. He says,

  927. moreover,

  928. my father,

  929. he's extending

  930. grace,

  931. he's reminding

  932. Saul,

  933. you're the

  934. father of a

  935. nation,

  936. you're my

  937. father-in-law,

  938. that's how I

  939. see you,

  940. Saul.

  941. He says,

  942. yes,

  943. see the

  944. corner,

  945. the wing of

  946. your robe

  947. in my hand,

  948. loaded with

  949. symbolism.

  950. for in that

  951. I cut off

  952. the corner

  953. of your

  954. robe and

  955. did not

  956. kill you,

  957. know and

  958. see that

  959. there is

  960. neither evil

  961. nor rebellion

  962. in my

  963. hand,

  964. I have

  965. not sinned

  966. against you,

  967. yet you

  968. hunt my

  969. life to

  970. take it,

  971. you are

  972. the one

  973. who seeks

  974. my harm,

  975. he says.

  976. In verse

  977. 12,

  978. David reminds

  979. Saul,

  980. I'm a

  981. sojourner,

  982. I'm in

  983. caves,

  984. he calls

  985. himself even

  986. worse than

  987. that here in a

  988. bit,

  989. and while

  990. you're the

  991. king,

  992. while you're

  993. my father,

  994. look at

  995. verse 12,

  996. let the

  997. Lord,

  998. let Yahweh,

  999. the Lord of

  1000. hosts,

  1001. judge between

  1002. you and

  1003. me.

  1004. If David's

  1005. not innocent,

  1006. this is a

  1007. scary thing

  1008. to invoke.

  1009. You and

  1010. I,

  1011. we don't want

  1012. what we

  1013. deserve,

  1014. do we?

  1015. We need

  1016. God's grace.

  1017. David says,

  1018. let the

  1019. Lord avenge

  1020. me on

  1021. you,

  1022. but my

  1023. hand shall

  1024. not be

  1025. against

  1026. you.

  1027. He's

  1028. emboldened

  1029. by summoning

  1030. the Lord

  1031. to judge.

  1032. I won't

  1033. do anything,

  1034. Saul,

  1035. if the

  1036. Lord will

  1037. strike you

  1038. down.

  1039. That's the

  1040. Lord avenging

  1041. you himself.

  1042. Verse 13,

  1043. as the

  1044. proverb of

  1045. the ancient

  1046. says,

  1047. wickedness

  1048. proceeds from

  1049. the wicked,

  1050. but my

  1051. hand shall

  1052. not be

  1053. against you.

  1054. He's saying

  1055. it would be

  1056. wicked to

  1057. kill the

  1058. one that

  1059. God has

  1060. put in

  1061. this office.

  1062. Only a

  1063. wicked man

  1064. would wish

  1065. to avenge

  1066. himself,

  1067. and I

  1068. do not.

  1069. I leave

  1070. that to

  1071. God.

  1072. Verse 14,

  1073. after whom

  1074. has the

  1075. king of

  1076. Israel

  1077. come out?

  1078. Now he's

  1079. reminding him

  1080. of how

  1081. little David

  1082. is.

  1083. Whom do

  1084. you pursue?

  1085. A dead

  1086. dog?

  1087. Now there's

  1088. a picture

  1089. for us.

  1090. I mean,

  1091. in the

  1092. wilderness,

  1093. there might

  1094. have been

  1095. some sheep

  1096. dogs,

  1097. you know,

  1098. there's

  1099. these sheep

  1100. folds all

  1101. around,

  1102. but there's

  1103. also the

  1104. hyena of

  1105. the Middle

  1106. East,

  1107. it's a

  1108. jackal.

  1109. A dog

  1110. was viewed

  1111. by the

  1112. Israelites

  1113. as a

  1114. dirty

  1115. scavenger.

  1116. It's a

  1117. name used

  1118. derogatorily for

  1119. those outside

  1120. of God's

  1121. covenant.

  1122. That's what

  1123. David is

  1124. describing himself

  1125. as.

  1126. I am the

  1127. outcast here,

  1128. I'm the

  1129. outsider,

  1130. I'm living

  1131. here like

  1132. a scavenger,

  1133. and I'm

  1134. a dead

  1135. dog at

  1136. that.

  1137. I'm a

  1138. flea,

  1139. he says.

  1140. It's a

  1141. tiny little

  1142. parasite that

  1143. lives on

  1144. sheep and

  1145. dogs and

  1146. other animals.

  1147. In verse

  1148. 15,

  1149. therefore let

  1150. the Lord

  1151. be judge and

  1152. judge between

  1153. you and

  1154. me,

  1155. see and

  1156. plead my

  1157. case and

  1158. deliver me

  1159. out of

  1160. your hand.

  1161. David could

  1162. have walked

  1163. out of that

  1164. cave,

  1165. think about

  1166. this.

  1167. He could

  1168. have walked

  1169. out of that

  1170. cave and

  1171. shown the

  1172. army of

  1173. Israel,

  1174. the head

  1175. of King

  1176. Saul,

  1177. another tall

  1178. corrupt

  1179. warrior,

  1180. another

  1181. Goliath,

  1182. and the

  1183. whole army

  1184. of Israel

  1185. could have

  1186. followed him

  1187. that day.

  1188. Instead he

  1189. stepped out

  1190. into the

  1191. sunlight with

  1192. a token of

  1193. God's mercy

  1194. because a

  1195. better king

  1196. is coming.

  1197. In

  1198. Psalm 35,

  1199. David cries

  1200. out,

  1201. plead my

  1202. cause,

  1203. O Lord,

  1204. with those

  1205. who strive

  1206. with me.

  1207. Fight

  1208. against those

  1209. who fight

  1210. against me.

  1211. Stir up

  1212. yourself,

  1213. God,

  1214. and awaken

  1215. to my

  1216. settlement,

  1217. to my

  1218. cause,

  1219. my God,

  1220. my Lord.

  1221. Judge me,

  1222. O Lord,

  1223. my God,

  1224. according to

  1225. your

  1226. righteousness,

  1227. and let

  1228. not them

  1229. rejoice

  1230. over me.

  1231. David's

  1232. case is

  1233. entirely

  1234. in the

  1235. hands of

  1236. God

  1237. as his

  1238. advocate.

  1239. God

  1240. sees,

  1241. he knows.

  1242. God

  1243. pleads,

  1244. he trusts.

  1245. God

  1246. delivers.

  1247. David would

  1248. not strike

  1249. Psalm

  1250. even

  1251. though

  1252. Saul

  1253. was a

  1254. wicked

  1255. king

  1256. because

  1257. David

  1258. knew

  1259. his

  1260. office,

  1261. the office

  1262. that Saul

  1263. currently

  1264. held,

  1265. was sacred.

  1266. It was

  1267. appointed

  1268. by God.

  1269. And a

  1270. kingdom

  1271. gained

  1272. by sin

  1273. would be

  1274. a curse,

  1275. not a

  1276. blessing.

  1277. David

  1278. had this

  1279. promise

  1280. from God

  1281. of the

  1282. kingdom,

  1283. but he

  1284. would not

  1285. take it

  1286. by blood.

  1287. He

  1288. would wait

  1289. on God's

  1290. time.

  1291. God

  1292. can

  1293. look at

  1294. David

  1295. and we

  1296. see the

  1297. image of

  1298. Jesus

  1299. Christ.

  1300. Jesus

  1301. was

  1302. reviled,

  1303. but he

  1304. did not

  1305. revile

  1306. back.

  1307. He

  1308. had the

  1309. armies

  1310. of heaven.

  1311. He

  1312. is

  1313. the

  1314. Lord

  1315. of

  1316. hosts

  1317. and he

  1318. could

  1319. have

  1320. commanded

  1321. the

  1322. angels

  1323. of

  1324. heaven

  1325. and

  1326. all

  1327. the

  1328. saints

  1329. to

  1330. come

  1331. in

  1332. power

  1333. and

  1334. crush

  1335. his

  1336. enemies.

  1337. And he

  1338. said,

  1339. not my

  1340. will

  1341. according

  1342. to my

  1343. flesh,

  1344. but your

  1345. will be

  1346. done,

1347. oh Lord. He suffered according to his human nature and patiently endured to fulfill all righteousness

1348. because Jesus Christ is the better king. The king who restored the honor to the office that had been

1349. so corrupted. Think of the office of king in Israel, the office of priests in Israel, the office of a

1350. prophet so corrupted. God had been silent for 400 years. The Lord Jesus restored those offices and then filled them.

1351. Well the third observation for today is that a better king is coming. A king whose rule is established

1352. in righteousness, justice, and mercy. A better king is coming. A king whose rule is established in

1353. righteousness, justice, and mercy. That's the kingdom you want to be part of and belong to. Look at verse 16.

1354. So it was when David had finished speaking these words to Saul that Saul said, is this your voice my son

1355. David? Someone pointed out in our Bible study David initiated the grace. He said my father

1356. and Saul now reciprocates it at least in the moment my son. And Saul lifted up his voice and wept.

1357. Real tears here. Real wailing. And then he said to David you are more righteous than I.

1358. If that's what Saul is weeping about, praise God. A sinner recognizing his righteousness is not enough.

1359. We fall short of the righteousness we need. He quickly shifts his focus to himself again. He says,

1360. for you have rewarded me with good where I have rewarded you with evil.

1361. And so we need to take Saul in this chapter as he is and then watch in the next two chapters to find out

1362. if this is a repentance wrought in his spirit by the work of God or if it's more of a superficial

1363. repentance at this time. Someone pointed out if it was a repentance of the feelings and not of the soul,

1364. he's weeping because of the danger he, his near death experience and not because of a true turn from his sin.

1365. Saul's temporary repentance at the words of David shows how truth can reach even the most hardened

1366. conscience. And the law of God does that. The moral law of God, it taps into that part of being made in

1367. the image of God, which every man, woman, boy and girl, every generation, every part of the world knows this,

1368. that I am a sinner and I need a savior outside of myself.

1369. In verse 18 we read Saul's words,

  1370. Verse 20,

1371. And now I know indeed that you shall surely be king

1372. and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand.

1373. The Hebrew is powerful here.

1374. In the English we get these words like surely, you know, it will endure.

1375. It's like trying to add emphasis.

1376. And in the original language it's this,

  1377. Reigning, you shall reign.

  1378. A double emphasis.

  1379. It's guaranteed.

1380. It implies an absolute certainty.

1381. Even Saul recognizing that David's uprightness was the mark of God's true king.

1382. The kingdom of God is not a kingdom of force where man gets his own way,

1383. but it's a kingdom of servants of God who wait upon the providence of God.

  1384. Proverbs 16, 12 tells us,

1385. It is an abomination for kings to commit wickedness,

1386. for a throne is established by righteousness.

1387. Isaiah 9, 7 is this prophecy of the better king that's coming,

1388. of the increase of his government and peace.

1389. There will be no end.

  1390. Reigning he shall reign.

1391. Upon the throne of David and over his kingdom in order to order it

1392. and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward,

  1393. even forever.

  1394. Isaiah 16, 5,

1395. In mercy the throne will be established,

1396. and one will sit on it in truth,

1397. in the tent of David,

1398. judging and seeking justice and hastening righteousness.

1399. This is the kingdom of Jesus,

  1400. the better kingdom.

  1401. It's established on righteousness,

  1402. justice,

  1403. and mercy.

1404. And even wicked King Saul recognizes this

  1405. and declares it.

1406. It's a powerful reminder how one day when our Lord Jesus comes back,

  1407. every knee,

1408. even the most wicked knees,

1409. the knees of his enemies who will never repent and be saved,

1410. every knee will one day drop to the ground

1411. and every tongue will confess,

1412. even the enemies of God's anointed to the end,

1413. those who resist his kingdom in pride and stubbornness.

1414. They will confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord of Lords

1415. to the glory of God the Father.

1416. A better king is coming.

1417. Well, the fourth and final observation for today,

1418. a better king is coming,

1419. a king whose kingdom is truly blessed.

1420. A king is coming whose kingdom is truly blessed.

  1421. Verse 21 reads,

  1422. Therefore,

  1423. in Saul asking David,

1424. swear now to me by the Lord

1425. that you will not cut off my descendants after me,

1426. and that you will not destroy my name from my father's house.

1427. This is Saul who's built an idol for himself.

1428. It's Saul who parades around all Israel

1429. to celebrate his own victories.

1430. And his final words give us a glimpse

  1431. into his true concerns.

  1432. My name,

  1433. my house,

  1434. my kingdom still.

  1435. Now,

  1436. in verse 22,

  1437. we read,

  1438. David swore to Saul.

  1439. Is this David compromising?

1440. We read next that Saul went home,

1441. but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

1442. In our Bible study this morning,

1443. you all pointed out something powerful here.

  1444. Two things.

  1445. First, in verse 22,

1446. David swore to Saul nothing new.

1447. Because who is in the line of Saul?

  1448. It's Jonathan.

1449. He's already covenanted with Jonathan

1450. to show God's covenant faithfulness to Jonathan's line.

1451. So swearing this to Saul is not a new promise or a new vow.

1452. It's simply knowing this already is in place

1453. with what I've promised Jonathan.

1454. And then the second observation is

1455. their physical movement is to drift away.

1456. And if all of this is a restored relationship,

1457. then wouldn't you expect David and his three

  1458. or his 600 men

1459. to travel now back in peace with Saul

  1460. to Gibeah,

  1461. the headquarters,

  1462. the palace,

  1463. the kingdom.

1464. And he's back in the,

  1465. you know,

  1466. he's a son-in-law.

  1467. He's in good standing

  1468. and we're at peace.

  1469. But in his shrewdness

1470. or maybe by the direction of the spirit,

  1471. as Saul goes home,

1472. and we're not given other details,

  1473. we simply read,

  1474. David and his men

1475. went up to the stronghold,

  1476. waiting on God's time

  1477. in a defensive posture.

1478. And that's where the story leaves us for today.

1479. David could spare Saul's life.

1480. He did not need Saul's death

1481. in order to be safe.

1482. David committed his cause to God most high

1483. in the words of the psalm

1484. who performs all things for me,

  1485. trusting in God's sovereignty.

1486. And now David remains a pilgrim.

1487. Notice the themes that we see exhibited here,

  1488. these shadows in David.

1489. By God's grace and power,

  1490. in this story,

  1491. David was meek.

  1492. Let's define that word.

1493. He had the power to kill Saul.

1494. Remember, the sword was in his hand.

1495. But by God's grace and power,

1496. he kept that power under God's control.

  1497. That's meekness.

  1498. It's strength under God's control.

  1499. And as a result,

1500. he would inherit the kingdom from God.

1501. By God's grace and power,

  1502. on this occasion,

1503. David showed mercy to his enemy.

1504. In return, David obtained mercy from God

1505. and even a blessing from Saul.

1506. By God's grace and power,

  1507. in this crisis,

1508. David's heart was so aimed at pleasing God

1509. that even cutting off a corner of a robe

1510. felt like a stain on his purity.

  1511. David has been reviled

1512. and persecuted day after day

1513. by Saul and his evil advisors.

1514. Yet David remained exceedingly glad

1515. in the words of the psalm

1516. to trust God's ultimate judgment.

1517. Do these kingdom descriptions sound familiar to you?

1518. David prefigures the final victory of Christ

  1519. where the old order,

  1520. dominion under Adam,

1521. the dominion of sin and death,

1522. it's forced to recognize the authority of Jesus Christ,

  1523. the risen king,

  1524. whose kingdom of grace

1525. will outlast the kingdoms of men.

1526. Our Lord Jesus Christ showed

1527. that the weapons of his kingdom,

1528. the way he does battle

  1529. and goes to war,

  1530. it's not material.

1531. It's not the powers of this world

  1532. and man's way,

  1533. but it's spiritual.

  1534. It's a kingdom that's not grabbed by force,

  1535. but that's given,

  1536. that's bestowed by God.

1537. The kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ

1538. is the truly blessed kingdom.

  1539. Amen.

1540. Our Lord Jesus declared this as the king,

1541. as the lawgiver for his people

  1542. in Matthew 5, 3 through 12.

1543. Blessed are the poor in spirit

1544. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

1545. Blessed are those who mourn

1546. for they shall be comforted.

  1547. Blessed are the meek

1548. for they shall inherit the earth.

1549. Blessed are those who hunger

  1550. and thirst for righteousness

1551. for they shall be filled.

  1552. Blessed are the merciful

1553. for they have obtained mercy.

1554. Blessed are the pure in heart

1555. for they shall see God.

  1556. Blessed are the peacemakers

1557. for they shall be called sons of God.

1558. Blessed are those who are persecuted

  1559. for righteousness sake

1560. for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

1561. Blessed are you when they revile

  1562. and persecute you

1563. and say all kinds of evil

1564. against you falsely for my sake.

1565. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad

1566. for great is your reward in heaven

1567. for so they persecuted the prophets

  1568. who were before you.

1569. This is the blessed kingdom of Jesus Christ.

1570. The Lord can bless those in his kingdom

1571. because he first fulfilled Romans 12, 21.

1572. Our Lord Jesus Christ was not overcome by evil

1573. but he did overcome evil with good.

1574. Our Lord Jesus taking evil

1575. that man threw at him

1576. with all the force available.

1577. The Lord submitted himself to God

  1578. who will judge all

  1579. and he endured it.

  1580. 1 Peter 2, 21 which we read earlier.

1581. Our Lord Jesus committed no sin

1582. nor was deceit found in his mouth

1583. who when he was reviled

1584. did not revile and turn.

1585. When he suffered he did not threaten

1586. but committed himself to him

  1587. who judges righteously.

1588. And to this you were called church

1589. because Jesus Christ also suffered for us

  1590. leaving us a pattern

1591. that we should follow in his steps.

  1592. Ephesians 4, 31 and 32.

1593. By the power and grace

1594. of the Holy Spirit working

  1595. and true believers

1596. hear this exhortation from God's word.

1597. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor

1598. and evil speaking be put away from you

  1599. with all malice

1600. and be kind to one another.

1601. Tender hearted, forgiving one another

1602. even as God in Christ forgave you.

1603. The better king has come.

1604. He has come in mercy

1605. and he will come again soon as judge.

1606. And like David in the wilderness

1607. we are pilgrims in this world.

1608. Jesus Christ is our stronghold

1609. but in him we are truly blessed.

  1610. Amen.

  1611. Let's pray.

  1612. O Lord

1613. we thank you for your kingdom

  1614. the better kingdom

1615. the true kingdom of heaven

1616. brought to earth by God the Son

  1617. our Lord Jesus Christ.

1618. Lord help us with our mouths to confess

1619. with our hearts to believe

1620. with our even our posture

  1621. with our knees

1622. our faces in the dirt

1623. to declare that Jesus Christ is Lord

1624. to the glory of God the Father

  1625. we ask.

  1626. Amen.
