  1. So if you have a copy of God's word, you can turn to 1 Samuel in the Old Testament.

  2. ! About a quarter of the way in the beginning of the book, the Old Testament.

  3. And it's also okay if you just listen along, and I'll be reading it for us.

  4. I'll read it trusting that it's God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, sufficient word.

  5. It's God's word for us, his people.

  6. 1 Samuel chapter 30.

    1 Samuel 30 chapter mention

  7. Now it happened when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day,

  8. that the Amalekites had invaded the south and Ziklag, attacking Ziklag, and burned it with fire.

  9. And they had taken captive the women and those who were there from small to great.

  10. They did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way.

  11. So David and his men came to the city, and there it was, burned with fire.

  12. And their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.

  13. Then David and the people who were with him lifted up their voices and wept,

  14. until they had no more power to weep.

  15. And David's two wives, Ahinoam, the Jezreelites, and Abigail, the widow of Nabal, the Carmelite,

  16. had been taken captive.

  17. Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him,

  18. because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and daughters.

  19. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.

  20. Then David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech's son,

  21. Please bring the ephod here to me.

  22. And Abiathar brought the ephod to David.

  23. So David inquired of the Lord, saying,

  24. Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?

  25. And he answered him,

  26. Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them,

  27. and without fail recover all.

  28. So David went, he and the six hundred men who were with him,

  29. and came to the brook Bezor,

  30. where those stayed and were left behind.

  31. But David pursued, and he and four hundred men,

  32. for two hundred had stayed behind,

  33. who were so weary that they could not cross the brook Bezor.

  34. Then they found the Egyptian in the field and brought him to David,

  35. and they gave him bread and he ate,

  36. and they let him drink water,

  37. and they gave him a piece of cake of figs

  38. and two clusters of raisins.

  39. So he had eaten, and his strength came back to him,

  40. for he had eaten no bread nor drunk water

  41. for three days and three nights.

  42. Then David said to him,

  43. To whom do you belong, and where are you from?

  44. And he said,

  45. I am a young man from Egypt,

  46. servant of an Amalekite,

  47. and my master left me behind

  48. because three days ago I fell sick.

  49. We made an invasion of the southern area of the Cherethites

  50. in the territory which belongs to Judah,

  51. and in the southern area of Caleb,

  52. and we burned Ziklag with fire.

  53. And David said to him,

  54. Can you take me down to this troop?

  55. So he said,

  56. Swear to me by God that you will

  57. neither kill me nor deliver me

  58. into the hands of my only master,

  59. and I will take you down to this troop.

  60. And when he had brought him down,

  61. there they were,

  62. spread out over all the land,

  63. eating and drinking and dancing,

  64. because of all the great spoil

  65. which they had taken

  66. from the land of the Philistines

  67. and from the land of Judah.

  68. Then David attacked them

  69. from twilight until the evening of the next day.

  70. Not a man of them escaped

  71. except 400 young men

  72. who rode on camels and fled.

  73. So David recovered all that the Amalekites

  74. had carried away,

  75. and David rescued his two wives,

  76. and nothing of theirs was lacking,

  77. either small or great,

  78. sons or daughters,

  79. spoil or anything

  80. which they had taken from them.

  81. David recovered all.

  82. Then David took all the flocks and herds

  83. they had driven before those other livestock

  84. and said,

  85. This is David's spoil.

  86. Now David came to the 200 men

  87. who had been so weary

  88. that they could not follow David,

  89. whom they had also made

  90. to stay at the brook Bezor.

  91. So they went out to meet David

  92. and meet the people who were with him.

  93. And when David came near to the people,

  94. he greeted them.

  95. Then all the wicked and worthless men

  96. of those who went to David

  97. answered and said,

  98. Because they did not go with us,

  99. we will not give them

  100. any of the spoil that we have recovered,

  101. except for every man's wife and children,

  102. that they may lead them away and depart.

  103. But David said,

  104. My brethren,

  105. you shall not do so

  106. with what the Lord has given us,

  107. who has preserved us

  108. and delivered us into our hands,

  109. the troop that came against us.

  110. For who will heed you in this matter?

  111. But as his part is

  112. who goes down to the battle,

  113. so shall his part be

  114. who stays with the supplies.

  115. They shall share alike.

  116. So it was from that day forward

  117. that he made a statute

  118. and an ordinance for Israel to this day.

  119. Now when David came to Ziklag,

  120. he sent some of the spoil

  121. to the elders of Judah,

  122. to his friends, saying,

  123. Here is a present for you

  124. from the Lord,

  125. the spoil of the enemies of the Lord.

  126. To those who were in Bethel,

  127. those who were in Ramoth,

  128. in the south,

  129. those who were in Jatir,

  130. those who were in Aorel,

  131. those who were in Sifmoth,

  132. those who were in Eshtimoah,

  133. those who were in Rakhal,

  134. those who were in the cities

  135. of the Jeremilites,

  136. those who were in the cities

  137. of the Kenites,

  138. those who were in Hormah,

  139. those who were in Korashan,

  140. those who were in Atak,

  141. those who were in Hebron,

  142. into the places

  143. where David himself and his men

  144. were accustomed to rove.

  145. The word of God

  146. for the people of God.

  147. Thanks be to God.

  148. Please be seated.

  149. The grass withers,

  150. the flower fades,

  151. but the word of the Lord

  152. stands forever.

  153. Let's pray.

  154. O Lord,

  155. may your word stand.

  156. We pray that you will please

  157. speak through the preacher,

  158. despite the preacher's limits

  159. and brokenness, Lord.

  160. We pray that your word,

  161. the word of God,

  162. through Jesus Christ,

  163. of hope and salvation,

  164. of a coming kingdom,

  165. of this better king,

  166. whose kingdom has been inaugurated

  167. and who is coming again, Lord.

  168. We pray that this,

  169. you will minister

  170. to your people today.

  171. We pray that you'll

  172. encourage us, Lord.

  173. You'll strengthen us,

  174. that the power of the Holy Spirit

  175. will breathe life

  176. and hope

  177. into your people today.

  178. For your glory we ask.

  179. Amen.

  180. Amen.

  181. To lose heart,

  182. it means to faint

  183. or to give up.

  184. A coach might have used

  185. that expression with you

  186. at halftime

  187. when you're down three to zero

  188. or maybe a jujitsu teammate

  189. after you lost.

  190. Don't lose heart.

  191. David and his 600 men

  192. had just gotten great news.

  193. If you remember back

  194. a couple weeks,

  195. they were not going to have

  196. to be put in that

  197. impossible dilemma

  198. of fighting on the side

  199. of the Philistines

  200. against the Israelites,

  201. fighting their own nation.

  202. God in his providence

  203. had used even the captains

  204. of the Philistines

  205. to send David

  206. and his 600 men

  207. back to their temporary home

  208. in Ziklag,

  209. which was controlled

  210. by the Philistines,

  211. but it was land promised

  212. by God to his people.

  213. They get to go home,

  214. but quickly as they arrive

  215. at home,

  216. all of them,

  217. including David,

  218. lose heart.

  219. When it comes to our faith,

  220. our walks,

  221. and our life as a church,

  222. losing heart

  223. is always a temptation.

  224. In a spiritual sense,

  225. losing heart

  226. means caving in to evil

  227. or losing your spiritual will

  228. to take another step

  229. or to continue standing.

  230. The enemy wants to attack

  231. God's people,

  232. especially when we're

  233. about to faint

  234. and tell us that we have

  235. no reason to press on,

  236. no reason to hope.

  237. The sermon title today

  238. is why we do not lose heart.

  239. Why we do not lose heart.

  240. I'll walk us through

  241. about five reasons

  242. using this passage.

  243. Number one,

  244. we do not lose heart

  245. because the enemy

  246. is only a temporary parasite.

  247. We do not lose heart

  248. because the enemy

  249. of God's people

  250. is only a temporary parasite.

  251. Look at verse one.

  252. Now it happened

  253. when David and his men

  254. came to Ziklag

  255. on the third day

  256. that the Amalekites

  257. had invaded the south

  258. and Ziklag,

  259. attacked Ziklag,

  260. and burned it with fire.

  261. You know what

  262. the Amalekites were?

  263. They were nomads.

  264. This means they travel around.

  265. They don't have

  266. permanent dwellings

  267. or farms.

  268. And they were parasites.

  269. This means that they live

  270. by draining another source.

  271. So they were nomadic parasites

  272. on the move

  273. that you could say

  274. as you look across the land,

  275. land of Israel

  276. and of the Philistines.

  277. It was like an infection

  278. on their system.

  279. Nobody liked the Amalekites.

  280. They survived

  281. by draining the resources

  282. of these established societies

  283. rather than farming

  284. for themselves.

  285. And after taking a cheap shot

  286. and attacking,

  287. they would ride off

  288. like we just saw in camels.

  289. They're really always ready

  290. to go into the desert

  291. and they would hide

  292. in the ravines

  293. and in caves

  294. and be really hard

  295. to hunt down

  296. and they wouldn't face you

  297. head on in a battle

  298. like a decent civilization.

  299. They had mastered this

  300. over generations.

  301. How to be predatory opportunists.

  302. In Deuteronomy 25, 17 and 18,

  303. they targeted the stragglers

  304. coming out of Egypt

  305. on the Exodus.

  306. Remember that?

  307. Then in Judges 6,

  308. chapter 6, verses 3 and 4,

  309. it describes them

  310. like a swarm of locusts

  311. trying to hijack

  312. the harvest of the Israelites.

  313. This is the Amalekites.

  314. And now they've struck in again

  315. following their modus operandi.

  316. Verse 2 says,

  317. they took captive

  318. the women

  319. and those who were there

  320. from small to great.

  321. See, what they do

  322. is when the army,

  323. the whole army is gone.

  324. They've just left their homes

  325. and the women and children back.

  326. That's when the Amalekites move in.

  327. They're awful.

  328. They're predators.

  329. But there's an interesting comment

  330. in verse 2.

  331. It says,

  332. they did not kill anyone.

  333. And even in this first verse in 2,

  334. we can see that God

  335. is limiting

  336. and even ordering

  337. all things,

  338. including these wicked Amalekites.

  339. Even in their sinful acts of men,

  340. and he will use it

  341. for his own holy end,

  342. even if we don't understand it

  343. or see it fully.

  344. The Amalekites intended

  345. total destruction

  346. everywhere they go.

  347. That's why they set it on fire.

  348. But see, in this case,

  349. God's mighty hand

  350. was superintending theirs.

  351. They took the captives

  352. and carried them along with them

  353. as slaves

  354. instead of executing them.

  355. They carried them away

  356. and they went on their way,

  357. it says.

  358. Literally,

  359. it says they drove them away.

  360. That's the same word

  361. used to how you would

  362. move cattle

  363. from one place to the other.

  364. This is bad treatment

  365. for these women

  366. and these children

  367. being driven

  368. by these horrible Amalekites

  369. like cattle.

  370. They specialized

  371. in low-risk,

  372. high-reward strikes.

  373. They only attack

  374. the vulnerable

  375. and they live off

  376. the work of others.

  377. They don't do anything

  378. constructive on their own.

  379. Think about how

  380. in this world

  381. there's either

  382. constructive work,

  383. destructive work,

  384. or restorative work.

  385. It's only those three.

  386. And the enemy of God,

  387. God creates.

  388. God does the constructive work.

  389. New creation.

  390. The enemy destroys.

  391. God recreates.

  392. God reconstructs.

  393. In God's enemy,

  394. the devil

  395. is like these Amalekites.

  396. Revelation 12, 12

  397. gives this encouragement.

  398. The devil has come down

  399. to you,

  400. inhabitants of the earth,

  401. full of great wrath

  402. because he knows

  403. that he only has

  404. a short time.

  405. See, the devil

  406. is a temporary destroyer,

  407. a temporary parasite,

  408. seeking to be like

  409. a locust with a swarm

  410. of demons

  411. to do damage

  412. to the good

  413. that God creates.

  414. So brothers and sisters,

  415. we do not lose heart

  416. because the enemy

  417. is only a temporary parasite.

  418. Number two,

  419. we do not lose heart

  420. because grief

  421. does not mean

  422. God has departed.

  423. We do not lose heart

  424. because though we do

  425. grieve in this life,

  426. it does not mean

  427. that God has departed.

  428. He is near those

  429. who grieve.

  430. Look at verse 3.

  431. So David and his men

  432. came to the city

  433. and there it was

  434. burned with fire

  435. and their wives

  436. and their sons

  437. and their daughters

  438. had been taken captive.

  439. Then David

  440. and the people

  441. who were with him

  442. lifted up their voices

  443. and wept

  444. until they had

  445. no more power

  446. even to weep.

  447. Imagine those 600 men.

  448. The last time

  449. they had been

  450. in Ziklag,

  451. everything was

  452. full of life,

  453. color,

  454. sound,

  455. smell.

  456. They said goodbye

  457. to their families

  458. and they went off

  459. to fight their brothers

  460. and cousins

  461. so they thought

  462. in this great confrontation.

  463. They didn't know

  464. anytime you go to battle

  465. you never do

  466. whether the Lord

  467. would let them

  468. come back home again.

  469. Would the Lord

  470. deliver them

  471. and bring them back

  472. to their families again?

  473. They got that great news

  474. that they were released

  475. and could go back home

  476. and they could go be

  477. with their wives

  478. and children

  479. but now they find

  480. their artifacts

  481. that were once

  482. in their homes

  483. just as charcoal.

  484. Each thing

  485. they pick up

  486. like it would for us

  487. if our house burnt down

  488. it would remind you

  489. of a relationship

  490. or a memory

  491. with a loved one,

  492. with a family member.

  493. Their town burned.

  494. Their loved ones

  495. taken captive.

  496. Their fellow

  497. brothers in battle

  498. crying aloud

  499. bitter of soul

  500. exhausted

  501. from weeping

  502. till they had

  503. no more strength

  504. to weep

  505. and the army

  506. that was marching

  507. after David

  508. seeing God

  509. take them in

  510. and out

  511. and have victory

  512. now wants to stone

  513. the anointed king

  514. that they had left

  515. everything to follow.

  516. I paused on this.

  517. Why did they want

  518. to stone David

  519. specifically?

  520. These are warriors.

  521. They're carrying

  522. all kinds of different

  523. blades and instruments

  524. you can use

  525. to kill other people.

  526. Why would they

  527. leave all those aside

  528. and pick up stones?

  529. Under the Mosaic law

  530. the success of the people

  531. was tied

  532. to the faithfulness

  533. of the leader.

  534. The men may have

  535. viewed

  536. the destruction

  537. as Ziklag

  538. as a sign

  539. of God's judgment

  540. against David.

  541. See the camp

  542. was to be kept holy

  543. because God

  544. walked among them.

  545. Deuteronomy 23

  546. 14 says that.

  547. God is with

  548. his people

  549. among their camp

  550. and is to be kept

  551. holy.

  552. And the preservation

  553. of the family

  554. and the home

  555. was each man's

  556. primary duty.

  557. By allowing

  558. their wives

  559. and children

  560. to be taken captive

  561. and their king

  562. was now

  563. the greatest failure.

  564. He had let

  565. the enemy

  566. intrude

  567. and violate

  568. the home front.

  569. the total loss

  570. at their camp

  571. in Ziklag

  572. suggested that

  573. perhaps the presence

  574. of God

  575. had departed

  576. from among them.

  577. The men

  578. in their grief

  579. viewed David

  580. like their generation's

  581. version of Achan

  582. from the book

  583. of Joshua.

  584. One man

  585. whose poor judgment

  586. has brought a curse

  587. on the entire group.

  588. And so by stoning David

  589. everyone would have

  590. a part in killing

  591. what they believe

  592. is the cause

  593. of all their bitter

  594. trouble.

  595. Stoning

  596. would give each man

  597. that opportunity

  598. to experience

  599. a cathartic

  600. sense of justice

  601. and vengeance.

  602. If we crush

  603. this man

  604. that we followed

  605. then our souls

  606. will feel

  607. less bitter.

  608. We read in verse 6

  609. that David

  610. was greatly distressed

  611. for the people

  612. spoke of stoning him

  613. because all

  614. the soul

  615. of the people

  616. was grieved.

  617. Literally

  618. they were bitter

  619. of soul.

  620. Every man

  621. for his sons

  622. and daughters.

  623. But the encouragement

  624. without getting

  625. any details

  626. is that

  627. God

  628. was with David.

  629. He

  630. is in grief.

  631. His army

  632. is in grief.

  633. He's despairing.

  634. In Psalm

    Psalms 139:7

  635. 139

  636. verses 7

  637. and 8

  638. cries out

  639. with these questions

  640. to God.

  641. Where can I go

  642. from your spirit

  643. or where can I

  644. flee from your presence

  645. if I make my bed

  646. in hell?

  647. The grave,

  648. the depths,

  649. behold,

  650. even there

  651. you are.

  652. We do not lose heart

  653. because our grief

  654. does not mean

  655. that God

  656. has departed.

  657. number three,

  658. we do not lose heart

  659. because our distress,

  660. in our distress,

  661. God is our strength.

  662. We do not lose heart

  663. because in our distress,

  664. God himself

  665. is our strength.

  666. Look at the rest

  667. of verse 6.

  668. We read that

  669. David strengthened

  670. himself

  671. in the Lord

  672. his God.

  673. He strengthened

  674. himself

  675. in the Lord.

  676. For who is God

  677. except the Lord?

  678. Psalm

  679. 1831.

  680. And who is a rock

  681. except our God?

  682. It is God

  683. who arms me

  684. with strength,

  685. the psalmist

  686. cries out,

  687. and makes

  688. my way perfect.

  689. He says,

  690. you have also

  691. given me

  692. the shield

  693. of your salvation

  694. and your right hand

  695. has held me up.

  696. Your gentleness

  697. has made me

  698. great.

  699. We do not have

  700. any indication

  701. that David wrote

  702. a new psalm

  703. for this occasion

  704. but it is a

  705. wonderful comfort

  706. in those old truths,

  707. those old psalms,

  708. singing them

  709. at the time

  710. when he needed

  711. it most.

  712. David strengthened

  713. himself in the Lord,

  714. we read,

  715. in verse 8.

  716. And he also

  717. inquired

  718. of the Lord.

  719. Think about this

  720. and David

  721. in this moment

  722. of worst peril

  723. and darkness

  724. and despair

  725. goes to the Lord.

  726. He's reminded

  727. of the Lord's

  728. presence

  729. and it's the presence

  730. of the Lord

  731. that strengthens him.

  732. And as we've lined up

  733. all of these events,

  734. remember how

  735. two chapters ago

  736. it skips back,

  737. it's like a flashback

  738. for Saul

  739. going to consult

  740. with the witch?

  741. the timeline

  742. has it,

  743. at least how

  744. some have put it

  745. together,

  746. how the very moment

  747. when David is

  748. seeking strength

  749. in the Lord

  750. is when Saul

  751. within that same

  752. 24-hour period

  753. is going to

  754. speak with a witch.

  755. as goes the king,

  756. so goes the kingdom.

  757. Saul consulting

  758. the realm of the dead

  759. and David consulting

  760. the living God.

  761. See the contrast

  762. between these two kings,

  763. these two men.

  764. It's a new pattern

  765. being set

  766. for the nation,

  767. a new direction,

  768. a new hope

  769. for God's people.

  770. even without

  771. any good news,

  772. he's finding

  773. his strength

  774. in God.

  775. David then

  776. receives from God

  777. the promise

  778. of a total recovery.

  779. They go

  780. and they pursue

  781. those raiders,

  782. but on their way

  783. 200 of their soldiers

  784. reach their point

  785. of exhaustion.

  786. They've been weeping.

  787. It says they wept

  788. until they were already

  789. exhausted and powerless.

  790. Now they go marching

  791. and they get to a point

  792. and they've lost heart.

  793. They are fainting.

  794. They cannot go anymore.

  795. And they just say,

  796. I'm going to stay right here

  797. in the coolness

  798. of this ravine.

  799. We're done.

  800. The word of the ravine,

  801. the brook Bezor,

  802. it means just that,

  803. coolness or refreshing

  804. for the body.

  805. It also has a second meaning,

  806. which I'll give you

  807. in a bit.

  808. So they leave them behind

  809. and as they're traveling

  810. the direction they think

  811. the caravan

  812. of the Amalekites

  813. has gone,

  814. they come across

  815. a starving,

  816. abandoned Egyptian slave

  817. and we read that

  818. they revive this man,

  819. they give him food

  820. and water and bread

  821. and calories

  822. and then he's able

  823. to talk.

  824. And then they ask him,

  825. where are you from?

  826. In other words,

  827. they didn't have

  828. any information

  829. that would lead them

  830. to show kindness

  831. to this person in need

  832. right here,

  833. this injured slave

  834. that's been abandoned

  835. because he was sick.

  836. It wasn't necessarily

  837. a transaction.

  838. Here these men

  839. that are desperate

  840. themselves

  841. are simply showing

  842. kindness

  843. to a slave

  844. that's been left

  845. for dead

  846. because it's the right

  847. thing to do.

  848. And in God's providence,

  849. think about that.

  850. He got sick

  851. three days ago

  852. and as a sick man

  853. being abandoned

  854. and left right there,

  855. this is also the path

  856. they're traveling.

  857. They happened to find him

  858. and prepared him

  859. in the right moment

  860. to be able to give them

  861. the information they need

  862. to now go carry out

  863. what God has decreed.

  864. See God's providence

  865. in every little detail

  866. as it unfolds.

  867. Verse 16,

  868. And when they had

  869. brought him down,

  870. there they were,

  871. spread out over

  872. all the land,

  873. eating and drinking

  874. and dancing

  875. because of the great spoil

  876. which they had taken

  877. from the land

  878. of the Philistines

  879. and the land of Judah.

  880. These Amalekites

  881. had gained a lot.

  882. They had amassed

  883. a great bounty.

  884. All the spoil,

  885. not only from Ziklag

  886. and the Judeans there,

  887. but also from the Philistines.

  888. And it's all there

  889. and here they are

  890. with the slave

  891. being left for dead,

  892. starving without water

  893. and here they are

  894. just enjoying wine

  895. and feasting

  896. and dancing.

  897. So in verse 17,

  898. what God promised David

  899. comes true.

  900. David attacked them

  901. from twilight

  902. before the sun

  903. was even rising,

  904. get a jump on it

  905. until the evening

  906. of the next day

  907. fighting over the night.

  908. Not a man of them

  909. escaped.

  910. escaped.

  911. I like that statement

  912. because God was true

  913. to his promise.

  914. Now at the same time,

  915. 400 young men

  916. rode on camels

  917. and fled.

  918. But God is always true

  919. to his word

  920. and to his promise.

  921. And if we keep reading

  922. later on

  923. and take the whole

  924. counsel of God's word,

  925. 1 Chronicles 4.42

  926. says that

  927. all of those

  928. that escaped

  929. get wiped out.

  930. It says 500 men

  931. of the sons of Simeon,

  932. so Israelites

  933. later on,

  934. a different point,

  935. they go and they

  936. defeat the rest

  937. of the Amalekites

  938. who had escaped

  939. and possessed

  940. that land forevermore.

  941. So eventually

  942. the Amalekites

  943. do get their final justice.

  944. We do not lose heart

  945. because in our distress,

  946. God is our strength.

  947. I'm sure David

  948. was distressed

  949. and exhausted

  950. and wanting to stop

  951. at the brook Bezor himself.

  952. But God was his strength.

  953. God made him press on

  954. and God gave him

  955. the great victory.

  956. It wasn't David's energy.

  957. It wasn't David's power.

  958. It was God

  959. being his supply,

  960. being his strength.

  961. Colossians 1.29

  962. reminds us,

  963. Paul cries this out

  964. after all his persecution

  965. and suffering.

  966. He says,

  967. I labor,

  968. striving according to

  969. God's working

  970. which he

  971. mightily works

  972. in me.

  973. We press on.

  974. We do not lose heart

  975. because in our distress

  976. it is God

  977. who is our strength.

  978. Number four,

  979. we do not lose heart

  980. because God sets

  981. the boundaries

  982. for the enemy.

  983. We do not lose heart

  984. because God himself

  985. sets the boundaries

  986. for the enemy.

  987. In verse 18 we read,

  988. So David recovered

  989. all that the Amalekites

  990. had carried away

  991. and nothing of theirs

  992. was lacking

  993. either small or great,

  994. sons or daughters,

  995. spoil or anything

  996. which they had taken

  997. from them.

  998. David recovered

  999. all.

  1000. Evil goes exactly

  1001. as far as God

  1002. permits it

  1003. and no further.

  1004. Think of

  1005. how horrible

  1006. it could have been.

  1007. Even if it

  1008. was horrible enough,

  1009. they grieved,

  1010. they were distressed,

1011. but it could have been

  1012. so much worse.

  1013. When Job

  1014. experienced evil,

1015. it was not a punishment

  1016. for his sin.

  1017. Beginning of Job

  1018. makes that clear,

1019. but it was by God's

  1020. permission.

  1021. And Job

  1022. understandably

  1023. questioned

  1024. God's goodness,

  1025. God's power,

  1026. and God's

  1027. justice.

  1028. And God

  1029. answered Job

  1030. in chapter 38

  1031. with these questions.

  1032. Job

  1033. says God,

1034. who shut in the sea

  1035. when it burst

  1036. forth

  1037. at creation?

  1038. I fixed

  1039. my limit

  1040. for it.

  1041. I said,

  1042. this far

  1043. you may come,

  1044. but no further.

  1045. And here

  1046. you proud

  1047. waves

  1048. must stop.

  1049. Evil

  1050. will rage

  1051. and cause

  1052. genuine grief,

  1053. but it cannot

  1054. cross the boundary,

  1055. it cannot cross

  1056. the line

  1057. that God

  1058. himself

  1059. draws.

  1060. From the

  1061. perspective of the

  1062. women and children,

  1063. they got

  1064. driven away.

  1065. They could have

  1066. cried out with

  1067. these New Testament

  1068. words that we have

  1069. in 2 Corinthians 4,

  1070. which we read

  1071. earlier.

  1072. Yes,

  1073. we were

  1074. captives

  1075. of these horrible

  1076. people driven

  1077. away.

  1078. We were hard

  1079. pressed on every

  1080. side,

  1081. yet not

  1082. crushed.

  1083. We were

  1084. perplexed,

  1085. but not in

  1086. despair.

  1087. Persecuted,

  1088. but not

  1089. forsaken.

  1090. Struck down,

  1091. but not

  1092. destroyed.

  1093. God sets

  1094. the boundaries

  1095. for the

  1096. enemy.

  1097. Remember

  1098. in Jesus,

  1099. his own

  1100. words in

  1101. Luke 22,

  1102. 31,

  1103. he looked at

  1104. Peter in the

  1105. eyes,

  1106. Simon,

  1107. Simon,

  1108. indeed,

  1109. Satan has

  1110. asked for

  1111. you that

  1112. he may

  1113. sift you

  1114. as wheat,

  1115. but I

  1116. have prayed

  1117. for you

  1118. that your

  1119. faith should

  1120. not fail,

  1121. and when

  1122. you have

  1123. returned to

  1124. me,

  1125. strengthen your

  1126. brethren.

  1127. God sets

  1128. the boundaries

  1129. on the

  1130. enemy.

  1131. Jesus

  1132. prays for

  1133. his people.

  1134. The enemy

  1135. cannot

  1136. invade

  1137. what Christ

  1138. is protecting.

  1139. Well,

  1140. the fifth

  1141. and final

  1142. reason for

  1143. today of

  1144. why we do

  1145. not lose

  1146. heart,

  1147. it's because

  1148. our king

  1149. shares

  1150. the spoils

  1151. of his

  1152. victory

  1153. with the

  1154. weak and

  1155. weary.

  1156. Our king

  1157. shares his

  1158. victory with

  1159. us who are

  1160. weary and

  1161. weak.

  1162. Look at

  1163. verse 20,

  1164. then David

  1165. took all

  1166. the flocks

  1167. and herds

  1168. that they had

  1169. driven out

  1170. before them

  1171. that belonged

  1172. to the

  1173. Amalekites,

  1174. and now he

  1175. won and he's

  1176. the leader of

  1177. this group

  1178. from Ziklag,

  1179. so all the

  1180. people say

  1181. this is

  1182. David's

  1183. spoiled.

  1184. He's the

  1185. one who

  1186. gets to

  1187. distribute

  1188. it however

  1189. he sees

  1190. fit.

  1191. And as

  1192. they go

  1193. back to

  1194. those 200

  1195. men who

  1196. stayed back

  1197. at the

  1198. brook and

  1199. the coolness

  1200. of the

  1201. ravine,

  1202. those who

  1203. did go and

  1204. fight say

  1205. we don't

  1206. want to

  1207. share with

  1208. those men,

  1209. even though

  1210. he said

  1211. it's yours

  1212. David to

  1213. decide we

  1214. don't want

  1215. to share

  1216. with them,

  1217. that's not

  1218. right.

  1219. They didn't

  1220. even go

  1221. fight,

  1222. they should

  1223. have no

  1224. share in

  1225. the prophet,

  1226. give them

  1227. their families

  1228. and that's

  1229. all.

  1230. And David

  1231. rebuked

  1232. those men

  1233. who followed

  1234. him and

  1235. who fought

  1236. but were

  1237. refusing to

  1238. share the

  1239. plunder.

  1240. And here's

  1241. the second

  1242. meaning of

  1243. this brook

  1244. where these

  1245. 200 waited

  1246. back to

  1247. cool off.

  1248. The brook

  1249. Bezor can

  1250. also mean

  1251. good news

  1252. or glad

  1253. tidings.

  1254. So while it

  1255. may have

  1256. refreshed the

  1257. body in the

  1258. coolness of

  1259. the shade,

  1260. it's a place

  1261. where a

  1262. gospel refreshes

  1263. the soul.

  1264. David said

  1265. in verse 23,

  1266. my brethren,

  1267. you shall

  1268. not do

  1269. so with

  1270. what the

  1271. Lord has

  1272. given us,

  1273. who has

  1274. preserved us

  1275. and delivered

  1276. us into

  1277. our hand.

  1278. All shall

  1279. share alike,

  1280. he says in

  1281. verse 24.

  1282. Verse 25,

  1283. so it was

  1284. from that

  1285. day forward.

  1286. See, this

  1287. becomes now

  1288. a decree

  1289. at the

  1290. brook

  1291. Bezor,

  1292. a rule

  1293. for the

  1294. whole

  1295. kingdom

  1296. going

  1297. forward

  1298. as long

  1299. as David

  1300. is king.

  1301. Here's the

  1302. gospel

  1303. decree.

  1304. There's an

  1305. ordinance for

  1306. all Israel

  1307. that all

  1308. will share

  1309. in the

  1310. spoil.

  1311. All will

  1312. receive

  1313. alike

  1314. because it's

  1315. the Lord

  1316. who gives.

  1317. And so

  1318. he sent

  1319. these gifts

  1320. to all the

  1321. elders of

  1322. Judah,

  1323. to all

  1324. those

  1325. different

  1326. places,

  1327. and he

  1328. said,

  1329. here is a

  1330. present for

  1331. you from

  1332. the spoil

  1333. of the

  1334. enemies

  1335. of the

  1336. Lord.

  1337. It's

  1338. God's

  1339. battle.

  1340. It's

  1341. God's

  1342. enemies.

  1343. It's

  1344. God's

  1345. victory.

  1346. It's

  1347. God's

  1348. glory.

  1349. It's

  1350. God's

  1351. blessings

  1352. that he

  1353. distributes

  1354. now through

  1355. his servant

  1356. David.

  1357. And he

  1358. gave those

  1359. to all

  1360. the places

  1361. where David

  1362. himself,

  1363. verse 31

  1364. says,

  1365. and his

  1366. men were

  1367. accustomed

  1368. to

  1369. rove.

  1370. while the

  1371. Philistines

  1372. will very

  1373. soon defeat

  1374. Saul and

  1375. Israel's

  1376. army,

  1377. God is

  1378. still

  1379. distributing

  1380. the spoils

  1381. of the

  1382. Philistines

  1383. to Judah

  1384. as if they

  1385. had won

  1386. without David

  1387. even having

  1388. to go and

  1389. fight the

  1390. Philistines

  1391. for their

  1392. own spoils.

  1393. You see

  1394. God's

  1395. sovereignty

  1396. over all

  1397. of this.

  1398. David saw

  1399. God's

  1400. sovereignty

  1401. first hand.

  1402. God is

  1403. using these

  1404. wicked

  1405. Amalekites

  1406. and this

  1407. new king

  1408. who God

  1409. has humbled.

  1410. God has

  1411. shown him

  1412. again and

  1413. again,

  1414. it's not

  1415. you David,

  1416. it's all

  1417. of me.

  1418. And this

  1419. is God's

  1420. pleasure in

  1421. bringing in

  1422. his kingdom.

  1423. What a

  1424. contrast we

  1425. have.

  1426. Saul lost

  1427. most of

  1428. his battles.

  1429. He taxed

  1430. God's

  1431. people.

  1432. He took

  1433. and took

  1434. and took

  1435. more from

  1436. them.

  1437. Now we

  1438. see with

  1439. David a

  1440. new king,

  1441. a new

  1442. hope.

  1443. God wins

  1444. the battles.

  1445. God gives

  1446. bountifully.

  1447. God spreads

  1448. his blessings

  1449. to all

  1450. the people

  1451. through his

  1452. servant,

  1453. his anointed

  1454. one.

  1455. As goes

  1456. the king,

  1457. so goes

  1458. the kingdom.

  1459. Our Lord

  1460. Jesus in

  1461. Matthew 20

  1462. declared this,

  1463. for the

  1464. kingdom of

  1465. heaven is

  1466. like a

  1467. landowner who

  1468. went out early

  1469. in the

  1470. morning to

  1471. higher labors

  1472. for his

  1473. vineyard.

  1474. And they

  1475. all work and

  1476. people start at

  1477. different times

  1478. of the day and

  1479. he gets to

  1480. the end of

  1481. the work

  1482. day.

  1483. And he

  1484. gives

  1485. generously

  1486. all the

  1487. same blessings

  1488. no matter

  1489. whether you

  1490. labored all

  1491. day or

  1492. barely any

  1493. at the

  1494. very end.

  1495. Everyone

  1496. receives

  1497. the reward

  1498. because it's

  1499. his to

  1500. give.

  1501. He is the

  1502. owner of

  1503. the vineyard

  1504. and he is

  1505. the king

  1506. of the

  1507. kingdom.

  1508. In

  1509. Ephesians 4

  1510. 8 we read

  1511. that when

  1512. Jesus Christ

  1513. had ascended

  1514. on high.

  1515. Last week

  1516. we saw the

  1517. glorious truth

  1518. of his

  1519. resurrection

  1520. and he

  1521. not only

  1522. rose and

  1523. walked on

  1524. the earth

  1525. with all

  1526. the eyewitnesses

  1527. and teaching

  1528. his disciples

  1529. but he also

  1530. ascended

  1531. and he

  1532. seated in

  1533. session

  1534. ruling from

  1535. heaven.

  1536. We read

  1537. that he

  1538. led

  1539. captivity

  1540. captive

  1541. and gave

  1542. gifts

  1543. to men.

  1544. He sits

  1545. on his

  1546. throne

  1547. in heaven

  1548. our Lord

  1549. Jesus

  1550. blessing

  1551. all his

  1552. people

  1553. his

  1554. church

  1555. with

  1556. gifts.

  1557. 1 Corinthians

  1558. 1 26

  1559. God has

  1560. chosen

  1561. the foolish

  1562. things of

  1563. the world

  1564. to put

  1565. to shame

  1566. the wise.

  1567. God has

  1568. chosen

  1569. the weak

  1570. things of

  1571. the world

  1572. to put

  1573. to shame

  1574. the things

  1575. that are

  1576. mighty

  1577. and the

  1578. base

  1579. things of

  1580. the world

  1581. the things

  1582. which are

  1583. despised.

  1584. God has

  1585. chosen

  1586. and the

  1587. things

  1588. which are

  1589. not

  1590. to bring

  1591. to nothing

  1592. the things

  1593. that are.

  1594. So we

  1595. do not

  1596. lose heart

  1597. brothers and

  1598. sisters

  1599. because King

  1600. Jesus

  1601. shares the

  1602. blessings of

  1603. his victory

  1604. with us

  1605. who are

  1606. weak

  1607. and weary.

  1608. Amen.

  1609. Romans 8

  1610. reminds us

  1611. Romans 8 17

  1612. we are

  1613. heirs of

  1614. God.

  1615. We receive

  1616. freely the

  1617. blessings that

  1618. Christ secured.

  1619. We are

  1620. joint heirs

  1621. with Christ

  1622. if indeed

  1623. we suffer

  1624. with him

  1625. that we

  1626. may also

  1627. be glorified

  1628. together

  1629. with him.

  1630. So where

  1631. are we in

  1632. this story

  1633. church?

  1634. We've seen

  1635. God's

  1636. providence

  1637. we've seen

  1638. his sovereignty

  1639. his power

  1640. we've seen

  1641. his kingdom

  1642. what he is

  1643. about.

  1644. I think we

  1645. have to be

  1646. like the

  1647. women and

  1648. children.

  1649. We are in

  1650. enemy territory

  1651. we are not

  1652. of this

  1653. world.

  1654. Here we

  1655. are exiles

  1656. and sojourners

  1657. and we

  1658. are longing

  1659. for King

  1660. Jesus

  1661. God's

  1662. anointed

  1663. one who

  1664. is coming

  1665. again

  1666. like the

  1667. groom

  1668. like those

  1669. wives longing

  1670. for their

  1671. husband to

  1672. come and

  1673. rescue.

  1674. We know

  1675. Jesus will

  1676. come for us

  1677. his people

  1678. he calls

  1679. the church

  1680. his bride

  1681. we trust

  1682. that he

  1683. will

  1684. he will

  1685. deliver us

  1686. once and

  1687. for all.

  1688. We put

  1689. ourselves

  1690. there

  1691. they look

  1692. back at

  1693. the smoke

  1694. going up

  1695. from the

  1696. city of

  1697. Ziklag

  1698. and that

  1699. could be

  1700. like our

  1701. life on

  1702. this earth

  1703. it's a

  1704. vapor

  1705. it's a

  1706. smoke

  1707. but there's

  1708. an eternal

  1709. weight of

  1710. the kingdom

  1711. of God

  1712. that he's

  1713. working

  1714. into us

  1715. it's the

  1716. certain

  1717. promise

  1718. that our

  1719. king will

  1720. restore

  1721. everything

  1722. that the

  1723. enemy

  1724. has stolen

  1725. he will

  1726. make it

  1727. all right

  1728. one day

  1729. 2 Corinthians

  1730. 4 16

  1731. therefore

  1732. we do

  1733. not

  1734. lose

  1735. heart

  1736. even

  1737. though

  1738. outwardly

  1739. our

  1740. man

  1741. the

  1742. outer

  1743. man

  1744. is

  1745. perishing

  1746. yet

  1747. the

  1748. inward

  1749. man

  1750. is

  1751. being

  1752. renewed

  1753. day

  1754. by day

  1755. for our

  1756. light

  1757. affliction

  1758. the sufferings

  1759. of this

  1760. life

  1761. which are

  1762. but for a

  1763. moment

  1764. is working

  1765. for us

  1766. a far

  1767. more

  1768. exceeding

  1769. and eternal

  1770. weight

  1771. of glory

  1772. we do

  1773. not look

  1774. at those

  1775. things

  1776. that are

  1777. seen

  1778. but at

  1779. those

  1780. things

  1781. that are

  1782. not

  1783. seen

  1784. for the

  1785. things

  1786. that are

  1787. seen

  1788. are

  1789. temporary

  1790. but the

  1791. things

  1792. that are

  1793. not

  1794. seen

  1795. are

  1796. eternal

  1797. brothers

  1798. and sisters

  1799. because

  1800. Jesus

  1801. is our

  1802. king

  1803. we

  1804. do

  1805. not

  1806. lose

  1807. heart

  1808. amen

  1809. let's

  1810. pray

  1811. oh

  1812. lord

  1813. we are

  1814. so weak

  1815. we are

  1816. so helpless

  1817. you are

  1818. so mighty

  1819. you are

  1820. sovereign in

  1821. your providence

  1822. lord over

  1823. everything

  1824. help us

  1825. to trust

  1826. you more

  1827. to follow

  1828. you more

  1829. closely

  1830. to not

  1831. depend on

  1832. ourselves

  1833. to depend

  1834. on you

  1835. will you

  1836. please build

  1837. your church

  1838. lord

  1839. may your

  1840. kingdom

  1841. come here

  1842. and lord

  1843. we long

  1844. for the

  1845. day

  1846. where your

  1847. kingdom

  1848. of heaven

  1849. will cover

  1850. the whole

  1851. heavens

  1852. the whole

  1853. new earth

  1854. lord

  1855. we long

  1856. for this

  1857. day

  1858. until then

  1859. we trust

  1860. that you'll

  1861. use everything

  1862. that you allow

  1863. in each of our

  1864. lives to prepare

  1865. us for yourself

  1866. we trust

  1867. lord that

  1868. you are true

  1869. to your promises

  1870. you will come

  1871. for your loved

  1872. ones

  1873. amen

  1874. you
