  1. For today we're in 2 Samuel chapter 1.

    2 Samuel 1 chapter mention

  2. Our passage is only the first 16 verses.

  3. ! So verses 1 through 16.

  4. ! I read this and I invite you to receive it, trusting that it's God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, sufficient word.

  5. It's his very own word for you and me, his people.

  6. 2 Samuel 1.

  7. Now it came to pass, after the death of Saul, when David had returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites,

  8. and David had stayed two days in Ziklag,

  9. on the third day, behold, it happened that a man came from Saul's camp with his clothes torn and dust on his head.

  10. So it was when he came to David that he fell to the ground and prostrated himself.

  11. And David said to him, Where have you come from?

  12. So he said to him, I have escaped from the camp of Israel.

  13. Then David said to him, How did the matter go?

  14. Please tell me.

  15. And he answered, The people have fled from the battle.

  16. Many of the people are fallen and dead.

  17. And Saul and Jonathan, his sons, are dead also.

  18. So David said to the young man who told him,

  19. How do you know that Saul and Jonathan, his son, are dead?

  20. Then the young man who told him said,

  21. As I happened by chance to be on Mount Gilboa,

  22. there was Saul leaning on his spear.

  23. And indeed the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

  24. Now when he looked behind me, he saw and called me, and I answered, Here I am.

  25. Then he said to me, Who are you?

  26. So I said to him, I am an Amalekite.

  27. He said to me again, Please stand over me and kill me,

  28. for anguish has come upon me, but my life still remains in me.

  29. So I stood over him and killed him,

  30. because I was sure that he could not live after he had fallen.

  31. So I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet that was on his arm,

  32. and have brought them here to my Lord.

  33. Therefore David took hold of his own clothes and tore them,

  34. and so did all the men who were with him.

  35. And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul

  36. and for Jonathan his son, for the people of the Lord,

  37. and for the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

  38. Then David said to the young man who told him,

  39. Where are you from?

  40. And he answered, I am the son of an alien, an Amalekite.

  41. So David said to him, How was it you were not afraid to put forth your hand

  42. to destroy the Lord's anointed?

  43. Then David called one of the young men and said,

  44. Go near and execute him.

  45. And he struck him so that he died.

  46. So David said to him, Your blood is on your own head,

  47. for your own mouth has testified against you,

  48. saying, I have killed the Lord's anointed.

  49. The word of God for the people of God.

  50. Thanks be to God. Please be seated.

  51. Let's pray.

  52. Oh Lord, we trust your promises about your word,

  53. that your word is sharp.

  54. It pierces through where no man can,

  55. in the hand of the Holy Spirit.

  56. Lord, we ask that your Holy Spirit will take your word,

  57. even this ancient narrative,

  58. and that your spirit will shine the light of Jesus Christ

  59. on this ancient passage,

  60. and apply it to our lives in a way, Lord,

  61. that you intended when you gave this to your church.

  62. We pray that you will help the preacher, Lord,

  63. to proclaim truths that exalt you,

  64. that are right, and that edify your body.

  65. We pray for your church, Lord,

  66. to receive you by faith,

  67. to have discerning ears,

  68. to be pulled deeper and deeper into your word.

  69. And we thank you, Lord,

  70. for how though we are so limited,

  71. you are so powerful.

  72. And we pray, Lord,

  73. that you will minister in your powerful way,

  74. despite our weaknesses,

  75. that you'll do this for your glory in our lives,

  76. we ask.

  77. Amen.

  78. Well, to survive in this world,

  79. we have to find out what is enough.

  80. What's enough study time to get an A for that teacher?

  81. How fast do I have to run a mile in order to make a team?

  82. How many times do I have to practice my lines

  83. to be ready to perform them live on the stage?

  84. For some of you,

  85. it's how much do I have to go above and beyond

  86. to get the bonus,

  87. to get the five-star rating?

  88. How much is enough?

  89. And today's passage forces us to face the same question

  90. as this young Amalekite.

  91. He wants to secure a place in David's rising kingdom.

  92. David has been anointed by God.

  93. The word anointed is Messiah.

  94. The word Christ is anointed.

  95. So David is a shadow for us of the coming kingdom.

  96. And there's no question more important

  97. for you and me today than that as well.

  98. What is enough to secure a place in the kingdom?

  99. I think we can learn from this non-example

  100. four things that are not enough.

  101. And then with God's help to answer from Scripture

  102. what is enough.

  103. So number one,

  104. is it enough to secure a place in God's kingdom

  105. knowing who the true king is?

  106. I want to argue that it's not enough

  107. to simply know who the true king is.

  108. Look at verse one.

  109. It came to pass after the death of Saul

  110. when David had returned from the slaughter

  111. of which group?

  112. Which people?

  113. The Amalekites.

  114. Remember the Amalekites,

  115. the predatory parasites

  116. that sneak in and prey on the weak?

  117. The ones who burned down Ziklag

  118. and carried off all the women and children?

  119. That's who David just went out

  120. and with God's power they slayed them.

  121. Now 400 of them,

  122. I think it was,

  123. they fled off on camels.

  124. And David had come back now

  125. having rescued the women and children,

  126. they're back in the ashes of their town.

  127. He stayed there two days,

  128. smelling that smell,

  129. the fire that these Amalekites

  130. had set to their city.

  131. But at least it's with his family,

  132. with their wives, their children.

  133. They get to see one another again.

  134. Verse two says,

  135. on the third day,

  136. behold it happened

  137. that a man came from Saul's camp.

  138. The narrator unfolds

  139. small but important details gradually.

  140. That's all we get for now.

  141. You can see almost the silhouette

  142. walking towards them of a man.

  143. And it's from the direction of

  144. where this battle took place.

  145. And as he gets closer,

  146. they can see his clothing,

  147. their torn clothes.

  148. And there's dust on his head.

  149. This is what you would do

  150. if you're grieving and mourning publicly.

  151. You want people to know right away,

  152. I'm a person that's hurt and injured emotionally.

  153. Give me space.

  154. And ask me what's going on.

  155. Outwardly,

  156. this man appears to be

  157. emotionally distraught,

  158. undone.

  159. And so it was,

  160. when this man now gets very close

  161. and he came to David,

  162. he falls to the ground

  163. and prostrates himself

  164. before David,

  165. the man anointed to be the king

  166. under the Lord

  167. over his people.

  168. Well, this initial impression

  169. we get of this man

  170. is one who outwardly appears

  171. to be on the side of Israel.

  172. Outwardly, he appears to be humble,

  173. meek,

  174. and one who belongs

  175. to the kingdom of heaven

  176. coming to earth

  177. in this shadowy form in Israel.

  178. And let's just pause right here

  179. because

  180. it's hard to interpret

  181. these Old Testament passages correctly

  182. and the science of

  183. correctly interpreting God's word

  184. is called hermeneutics.

  185. And then when we go to apply God's word,

  186. we often get it wrong as well.

  187. So here's a very simple rule

  188. we need to remember

  189. on difficult passages like this.

  190. We are always

  191. the worst person

  192. in any narrative.

  193. That's us.

  194. Let's just start with that.

  195. And then the next part is

  196. what does this reveal about God?

  197. So right away,

  198. let's recognize

  199. that this Amalekite,

  200. this man approaching David,

  201. prostrating before David,

  202. this is who we need

  203. to identify with.

  204. Some of us have known

  205. the emptiness

  206. of this type of worship.

  207. Maybe some today who

  208. this is the only type

  209. of knowledge of God

  210. that you have.

  211. Let me put on

  212. an outward show

  213. of reverence to him

  214. and maybe he'll remember

  215. me when he comes

  216. in glory and power

  217. one day.

  218. Brothers and sisters,

  219. for you and me,

  220. that's been part

  221. of our testimony.

  222. Is that enough

  223. to know who the true king is

  224. and put on an outward show

  225. of religion?

  226. It's not enough,

  227. is it?

  228. in Matthew 8,

  229. 29,

  230. the demons

  231. recognize the son of God

  232. walking the earth

  233. and they say to him,

  234. what have you to do

  235. with us,

  236. son of God?

  237. Have you come here

  238. to torment us

  239. before the time?

  240. The demons knew

  241. who the true king is.

  242. It's Jesus Christ.

  243. Christ.

  244. And that's not enough

  245. to have a place

  246. in his kingdom.

  247. Not only is

  248. that superficial worship

  249. and knowledge of God

  250. insufficient,

  251. but also doing

  252. what we guess

  253. the true king

  254. wants done

  255. is also not enough.

  256. Doing what we guess

  257. the true king

  258. wants done

  259. is also not enough

  260. to secure a place

  261. in his kingdom.

  262. That's what the Amalekite

  263. tries next.

  264. Look at verse 3.

  265. David said to him,

  266. where do you come from?

  267. So he said to him,

  268. I have escaped

  269. from the camp of Israel.

  270. Well, the immediate thought

  271. that David has here

  272. is I want to hear

  273. the report

  274. because again,

  275. he's been off

  276. fighting a different battle,

  277. saving back his women,

  278. the women and children

  279. from Ziklag.

  280. And he's been wondering

  281. now for two days,

  282. is the battle over?

  283. How did it go?

  284. And this is the first report

  285. he gets.

  286. So it's what's on David's mind

  287. in verse 4.

  288. David said to him,

  289. how did the matter go?

  290. Please tell me.

  291. And he answered,

  292. the people have fled

  293. from the battle.

  294. All of Israel retreated.

  295. They ran away.

  296. Many of the people

  297. have fallen dead,

  298. including Saul

  299. and Jonathan,

  300. his son.

  301. They're also dead.

  302. We can put ourselves

  303. there with David.

  304. This is his beloved friend,

  305. his brother in the battle,

  306. the one who had recognized

  307. David as the one

  308. that God has anointed

  309. and chosen.

  310. I would love to have

  311. a place in this kingdom.

  312. And he hears these words

  313. that Jonathan and Saul

  314. are both dead.

  315. What's on David's mind

  316. in verse 5?

  317. David said to the young man

  318. who told him,

  319. how do you know

  320. that Saul and Jonathan,

  321. his son,

  322. are dead?

  323. Isn't that one of the

  324. early stages of grief?

  325. It's shock and denial.

  326. I just got to know

  327. if this is going to even

  328. sink in.

  329. Are you an eyewitness?

  330. Do I need to accept

  331. this hard truth from you?

  332. Verse 6,

  333. then the young man

  334. who told him said,

  335. as I happened by chance,

  336. it already makes you wonder

  337. if that's a stretch.

  338. That's what this

  339. Amalekite's claiming.

  340. As I happened by chance

  341. to be on Mount Gilboa,

  342. there was Saul

  343. leaning on his spear.

  344. Well, you can look back

  345. to the last chapter

  346. of 1 Samuel,

    1 Samuel 31 chapter mention

  347. chapter 31,

  348. verse 4b,

  349. says that Saul

  350. leaned on his sword,

  351. not his spear.

  352. Now, we know more

  353. than David knows.

  354. We've heard

  355. the narrator's account.

  356. David hasn't.

  357. But we're already

  358. even more suspicious.

  359. If at first

  360. it was profiling him

  361. for just being

  362. an Amalekite,

  363. maybe that was wrong,

  364. but now we're suspicious

  365. of his report.

  366. And then what he says next,

  367. indeed the chariots

  368. and horsemen

  369. followed hard

  370. after Saul.

  371. Well, chapter 31,

  372. verse 3,

  373. says it was the archers

  374. who got Saul.

  375. Three times in one verse,

  376. the archers,

  377. the archers,

  378. the archers,

  379. not the chariots.

  380. Verse 7,

  381. now when he looked

  382. behind him,

  383. he saw me

  384. and called,

  385. and I answered,

  386. here I am.

  387. This Amalekite's

  388. positioning himself

  389. as a servant

  390. to the king of Israel.

  391. Here I am.

  392. In Hebrew,

  393. it's a heavy word.

  394. It's the same response

  395. of Abraham to God.

  396. Here I am, God.

  397. I'm your servant.

  398. It's the response

  399. of Moses

  400. at the burning bush

  401. to God.

  402. Here I am, God.

  403. And Isaiah

  404. in the throne room,

  405. here I am.

  406. It signifies

  407. total availability

  408. and submission

  409. to the greater king.

  410. And this Amalekite's

  411. portraying himself

  412. as faithful,

  413. obedient servant

  414. of the king of Israel.

  415. And he's trying

  416. to say that

  417. anything I did

  418. was just out of

  419. my duty now

  420. to the one

  421. who I've said

  422. is my king.

  423. In verse 8,

  424. he said to me,

  425. who are you?

  426. So I answered him,

  427. I am an Amalekite.

  428. He said to me again,

  429. please stand over me

  430. and kill me

  431. for anguish

  432. has come upon me

  433. but my life

  434. still remains.

  435. The word anguish,

  436. Shabbat,

  437. it's rare

  438. and difficult

  439. to translate this.

  440. Some scholars

  441. suggest it refers

  442. to a seizure,

  443. like a spasm

  444. of all the muscles.

  445. Perhaps implying

  446. that Saul's armor,

  447. there's the armor

  448. of Saul

  449. making another appearance,

  450. had become a trap

  451. for him

  452. and he's suffocating.

  453. Maybe he was paralyzed

  454. by the terror

  455. of the moment.

  456. The Amalekite

  457. uses this specific

  458. medical sounding term

  459. and it adds detail

  460. to the story

  461. and maybe this part

  462. is true

  463. that he did seesaw

  464. there.

  465. By the way,

  466. he walked away

  467. with the bracelet

  468. and the crown.

  469. He did get those somehow.

  470. So maybe those details

  471. are accurate.

  472. Verse 10,

  473. so I stood over him

  474. and killed him

  475. because I was sure

  476. he could not live

  477. after he had fallen.

  478. So the Amalekite's claiming

  479. I did the right thing.

  480. I took the old man

  481. out of his misery.

  482. He was in anguish

  483. and I just was doing

  484. a gracious thing.

  485. I was mercifully letting him

  486. die in peace,

  487. end his suffering.

  488. But he's saying

  489. that I'm the one

  490. who killed Saul

  491. and now we know

  492. he's bearing false witness.

  493. He's lying.

  494. Chapter 31,

  495. verse 4b says

  496. that Saul killed himself.

  497. The Amalekite

  498. is most likely

  499. trying to take credit

  500. for something he thought

  501. the true king,

  502. David,

  503. would want to have done.

  504. He's guessing

  505. at what the new king

  506. wanted to happen

  507. and telling this report

  508. to promote himself

  509. in the eyes

  510. of the rising king.

  511. But doing what we guess

  512. the true king wants

  513. done

  514. is not enough

  515. to secure a place

  516. in his kingdom.

  517. How many of us

  518. have approached God

  519. that way?

  520. I don't know

  521. what God wants

  522. but I think God wants me

  523. to do this or that

  524. and so I'm going to

  525. do these things

  526. and my intention is

  527. to get some points

  528. in God's eyes

  529. and be able to present

  530. this back to God.

  531. Look what I have done

  532. for you, Lord.

  533. And our Lord Jesus

  534. warned about that

  535. in the New Testament.

  536. He doesn't want

  537. our sacrifices.

  538. He wants us

  539. to obey him.

  540. And what he's called us

  541. to do is very simple.

  542. Believe in me.

  543. Follow me.

  544. I will be the king

  545. of your life.

  546. I will be your good shepherd.

  547. Abide in me.

  548. That's what he calls us to.

  549. Our flesh,

  550. we want to go around

  551. doing what we guess

  552. he wants us to do.

  553. Adding on

  554. what we think

  555. are good works

  556. in order to secure

  557. a place in his kingdom.

  558. And that's not enough.

  559. Number three,

  560. giving what we think

  561. the king wants

  562. to receive

  563. is also not enough

  564. to secure a place

  565. in his kingdom.

  566. Giving what we think

  567. the king wants

  568. to receive

  569. is not enough

  570. to secure a place

  571. in his kingdom.

  572. Look at verse 10.

  573. The Amalekite continues,

  574. I took the crown

  575. that was on his head

  576. and the bracelet

  577. that was on his arm

  578. and I have brought them here

  579. to the Lord,

  580. to David.

  581. I could have sold these,

  582. I could have bartered them away.

  583. It's a lot of gold

  584. and silver in my hands.

  585. My clothes are torn

  586. and I'm bringing them

  587. to you, David.

  588. But it's a transaction.

  589. It's bartering.

  590. These are very valuable.

  591. But what's even more valuable

  592. is a high place,

  593. a standing secured for me

  594. in the kingdom

  595. of this new king.

  596. The Amalekites saw

  597. a power vacuum

  598. over the Israelites

  599. who David had just

  600. defeated the Amalekites.

  601. And by bringing the crown

  602. and the bracelet to David,

  603. he was essentially

  604. crowning David himself.

  605. Likely hoping for

  606. a high-ranking position

  607. or some kind of

  608. massive financial reward

  609. for delivering the news

  610. and the emblems

  611. of the power

  612. David would soon hold.

  613. In verse 11 we read,

  614. Therefore David

  615. took hold of his own clothes

  616. and tore them.

  617. And so did all the men

  618. who were with him.

  619. And they mourned

  620. and wept

  621. and fasted

  622. until evening

  623. for Saul

  624. and for Jonathan his son,

  625. for the people of the Lord

  626. and for the house of Israel

  627. because they had fallen

  628. on the sword.

  629. It shows you David's heart

  630. one more time.

  631. It's not for the crown.

  632. It's not for what

  633. this world could offer.

  634. His heart is for

  635. the Lord's anointed

  636. and his son

  637. and the people of God.

  638. The whole house of Israel

  639. for his brothers in battle

  640. who were all

  641. slain by the sword.

  642. Many of these

  643. would have been

  644. those same 3,000

  645. skilled soldiers

  646. who had been chasing

  647. David and his men

  648. around in the wilderness

  649. all these years.

  650. These Benjamites

  651. who they could have viewed

  652. as their enemy.

  653. And this is

  654. tearing David up

  655. in his heart.

  656. Instead of celebrating

  657. the death of his rival,

  658. his reaction was one

  659. of genuine sorrow.

  660. And as goes the king,

  661. so goes his kingdom.

  662. All his people,

  663. his men with him,

  664. share his heart

  665. for the Lord's people.

  666. Verse 13,

  667. Then David said

  668. to the young man

  669. who told him,

  670. Where are you from?

  671. And he answered,

  672. I am the son

  673. of a stranger,

  674. an Amalekite.

  675. This is the same

  676. question and answer

  677. that Saul used

  678. with this young man.

  679. Who are you?

  680. Where are you from?

  681. I'm an Amalekite.

  682. And now,

  683. the new king

  684. asked that same question

  685. and answer.

  686. So Saul's interaction

  687. with the Amalekite

  688. is set up

  689. as a contrast

  690. with David's interaction

  691. with the Amalekite.

  692. The downfalling king

  693. and the uprising king

  694. set in contrast

  695. one to the other.

  696. Saul represents

  697. the way of the world,

  698. a king like

  699. all the other nations.

  700. And David represents

  701. the kingdom of God.

  702. In verse 14,

  703. David said to him,

  704. How was it

  705. you were not afraid

  706. to stretch forth

  707. your hand

  708. and destroy

  709. the Lord's Messiah?

  710. That's the word he uses.

  711. You have attacked

  712. the one that God anointed.

  713. This is not just

  714. a crime against man.

  715. It's an assault

  716. upon God himself.

  717. Here the Amalekite came

  718. bringing to the king

  719. what he thought

  720. the king would want

  721. to receive as a gift.

  722. The crown.

  723. The thing that David's

  724. been very patiently

  725. waiting for

  726. in God's timing.

  727. Here it is

  728. in your hands.

  729. And instead,

  730. David's heart

  731. has been reserved

  732. by the spirit

  733. for God's timing.

  734. For God's way

  735. of doing it.

  736. Giving the king

  737. what we think

  738. he wants

  739. is not enough.

  740. we can fall

  741. into that same

  742. temptation

  743. of the Middle Ages.

  744. I'm going to

  745. drop some coins

  746. into the offering box

  747. and God will use

  748. that to overlook

  749. a portion of my sins.

  750. Or I'm going to

  751. sacrifice and give

  752. in all these other ways.

  753. But yet,

  754. my heart isn't

  755. the Lord's.

  756. My heart's not

  757. for his people,

  758. for his coming kingdom,

  759. what he's made

  760. very clear.

  761. We need to repent

  762. of that

  763. and instead of

  764. trying to bring

  765. a gift

  766. we think the Lord

  767. may want from me,

  768. we need to give him

  769. ourselves.

  770. We need to surrender

  771. our whole lives

  772. to the Lord.

  773. That's what he's after

  774. with God's people

  775. all along.

  776. It's our heart.

  777. Well,

  778. the fourth observation

  779. is the last one.

  780. It's still no solution.

  781. But to sum it all up,

  782. it's this.

  783. There is nothing

  784. we can do

  785. or bring

  786. or know

  787. to secure a place

  788. for ourselves

  789. in the kingdom

  790. that is coming.

  791. There's nothing

  792. we can know,

  793. do,

  794. or bring

  795. that will ever

  796. be enough.

  797. Verse 15 says,

  798. Then David called

  799. one of the young men

  800. and said to him,

  801. Go near

  802. and execute him.

  803. And he struck him

  804. so that he died.

  805. In a military

  806. or royal context,

  807. this term,

  808. young man,

  809. that's been used

  810. of the Amalekite,

  811. it refers to

  812. a servant

  813. or an armor bearer

  814. close to someone

  815. important.

  816. And that's how

  817. the Amalekite

  818. had portrayed himself.

  819. I'm Saul's helper.

  820. I'm this young man

  821. associated with

  822. Israel and Saul.

  823. The irony is that

  824. David uses

  825. his own young man,

  826. his own armor bearer

  827. to execute

  828. this man

  829. who bore

  830. a false witness

  831. and who killed

  832. the Lord's anointed.

  833. It creates

  834. a measure

  835. for measure

  836. parallel.

  837. This servant

  838. is now killed

  839. for being an assassin.

  840. In verse 9,

  841. the Amalekite claims

  842. that Saul had said

  843. that he was in

  844. anguish

  845. and pain.

  846. And in verse 16,

  847. David said to him,

  848. Your blood

  849. is on your own head

  850. for your own mouth.

  851. You testified

  852. against you saying,

  853. I have killed

  854. the Lord's

  855. anointed.

  856. Saul's not

  857. letting him

  858. off the hook

  859. even if his

  860. story was true.

  861. Even if King Saul

  862. had asked you

  863. to do that,

  864. your blood,

  865. his blood

  866. is on your hands.

  867. You're guilty.

  868. David's acting

  869. as a king.

  870. The king

  871. in a monarchy

  872. judges.

  873. He makes decisions.

  874. He rules

  875. in hard cases

  876. like King Solomon

  877. had to judge,

  878. be the supreme court.

  879. And David

  880. has now declared

  881. this man guilty.

  882. He says,

  883. Your mouth

  884. has answered

  885. against you.

  886. You have said

  887. I killed

  888. the king.

  889. We know more

  890. than David.

  891. We also know

  892. that this man

  893. is bearing

  894. false witness.

  895. He's lying.

  896. Someone commented,

  897. Anytime that the

  898. witness of an

  899. Amalekite disagrees

  900. with the witness

  901. of the narrative,

  902. never listen

  903. to the Amalekite.

  904. The narrator

  905. is inspired

  906. by the Holy Spirit.

  907. Of course,

  908. the cynics

  909. and critics

  910. will point to this.

  911. Oh, see,

  912. the Bible

  913. contradicts itself.

  914. The Bible

  915. has even errors,

  916. some have said.

  917. No,

  918. the Amalekite

  919. bore false witness

  920. and under Torah law,

  921. a malicious witness

  922. who seeks

  923. the death

  924. of another

  925. through lies

  926. deserves

  927. the same punishment.

  928. So the irony,

  929. even though David

  930. didn't know

  931. as much as we know,

  932. is that he had lied

  933. about killing Saul

  934. to get this reward

  935. and that lie

  936. was now the legal

  937. basis furthermore

  938. for his execution.

  939. Luke 18,

  940. 14,

  941. Jesus said,

  942. all those

  943. who exalt themselves

  944. will be humbled

  945. and those

  946. who humble themselves

  947. will be exalted.

  948. Saul had exalted

  949. himself over

  950. and over

  951. and over again

  952. and he has been

  953. brought low.

  954. And in the kingdom

  955. of God,

  956. this pattern

  957. will stop.

  958. the first person

  959. trying to creep

  960. into David's kingdom

  961. is an Amalekite

  962. trying to pretend

  963. like he's not

  964. an enemy

  965. of God's kingdom

  966. and God's people,

  967. trying to exalt himself

  968. and he ends

  969. with execution.

  970. This will not happen

  971. in the kingdom

  972. of God's anointed

  973. where the Lord

  974. truly rules

  975. over his people.

  976. It's those

  977. who humble themselves

  978. low before

  979. the anointed one

  980. of God

  981. who kiss the son

  982. lest he be angry

  983. and you will perish.

  984. Those are the ones

  985. he is pleased

  986. to exalt.

  987. There is nothing

  988. we can do

  989. or know

  990. or bring

  991. that will ever

  992. be enough.

  993. Think of

  994. what other stories

  995. this reminds you of.

  996. Probably a lot.

  997. God's word

  998. is so rich

  999. and there are really

  1000. only so many themes

  1001. in all of scripture

  1002. but they're rich

  1003. and beautiful

1004. and they all work together.

  1005. The Amalekite

  1006. wanted to trade

  1007. these pieces

  1008. of gold and silver

  1009. for a place

  1010. in the kingdom

  1011. of God

  1012. under David.

  1013. He was self-promoting,

  1014. manipulating,

  1015. leveraging

  1016. to get a reward

  1017. for himself.

  1018. The Amalekite

  1019. viewed the death

  1020. of the Lord's anointed

  1021. as an opportunity

  1022. for gain

  1023. in this life.

  1024. He was like

  1025. a shadow of Judas.

  1026. Aren't you picturing him?

  1027. Both men

  1028. viewed the Messiah

  1029. as a commodity

  1030. to be traded

  1031. for personal advancement

  1032. and financial gain.

  1033. They saw

  1034. the true king

  1035. but they completely

  1036. missed out

  1037. on his kingdom.

  1038. Brothers and sisters,

  1039. my last question

  1040. for us today,

1041. we've come to the end

  1042. of our passage

1043. but I've only given you

  1044. depressing news so far.

  1045. Here's the last question.

  1046. What is enough

  1047. to have a place

  1048. in the Lord's kingdom?

  1049. What is enough

  1050. to have a place

  1051. with King Jesus?

  1052. David,

1053. the man after God's heart

  1054. which is better

  1055. translated this way,

  1056. the man

  1057. upon whom God

  1058. had set

  1059. his divine heart

  1060. elected by God

  1061. not because

  1062. he deserved anything

  1063. but because

  1064. God chose

  1065. to show David grace.

  1066. He refused

  1067. the crown

  1068. this way

  1069. because the Holy Spirit

  1070. caused him to.

  1071. He would

  1072. receive the crown

  1073. from God alone

  1074. in God's timeline

  1075. and in God's way.

  1076. To David,

  1077. the crown

  1078. wasn't something

  1079. to be snatched

  1080. for himself.

  1081. The Lord

  1082. had already taught him

  1083. this lesson

  1084. several times

  1085. to wait

  1086. upon the Lord.

  1087. David has been

  1088. anointed

  1089. but his whole life

  1090. so far

  1091. has been misery,

  1092. suffering,

  1093. wilderness.

  1094. He's in exile.

  1095. He's a sojourner.

  1096. A man without a home.

  1097. The home he temporarily

  1098. had just got burnt

  1099. to ashes.

  1100. But he has received

  1101. from the Lord

  1102. a promise.

  1103. And all things

  1104. have not yet

  1105. been put under

  1106. his feet.

  1107. And he's trusting

  1108. by faith

  1109. that God

  1110. will be true

  1111. to his promise.

  1112. And God

  1113. will do

  1114. what he said.

  1115. You see how

  1116. David foreshadows

  1117. the great king,

  1118. the great anointed one.

  1119. Think of Matthew 4,

  1120. 9 and 10.

  1121. Jesus says,

  1122. all these things

  1123. I will give you.

  1124. I'm sorry.

  1125. In Matthew 4,

  1126. the enemy tempts Jesus.

  1127. Satan says to Jesus,

  1128. I will give you

  1129. all these things.

  1130. I will give you

  1131. the kingdoms

  1132. of this whole world,

  1133. Jesus.

1134. But you must fall down

  1135. and worship me.

  1136. And our Lord Jesus

1137. quotes back to the enemy.

  1138. You shall worship

  1139. the Lord your God.

  1140. Jesus is the king

  1141. ruled by God's word,

  1142. ruled by God's law,

  1143. fearing God alone.

  1144. Luke 9, 58.

  1145. The son of man,

  1146. Jesus Christ,

  1147. has nowhere to lay

  1148. his head.

  1149. He traveled this earth

  1150. like David,

  1151. like an exile.

1152. A man that was poor.

  1153. No one recognized

1154. him as the true king.

  1155. Philippians 2, 8 and 9.

  1156. Jesus Christ humbled himself

  1157. and became obedient

1158. to the point of death.

  1159. He is the one

  1160. who reversed

  1161. the pattern

1162. that Saul could never keep.

  1163. Instead of exalting himself,

  1164. Jesus made himself

1165. as low as could possibly be

1166. and then much lower still

  1167. and cursed.

  1168. And therefore,

  1169. because of his obedience,

  1170. his act of obedience

  1171. to the Father,

  1172. God has highly

  1173. exalted him.

  1174. In Hebrews 2, 8,

1175. God has put all things

  1176. in subjection

  1177. under the feet

  1178. of King Jesus.

  1179. Already spiritually,

  1180. he rules.

  1181. And one day,

  1182. he will rule physically

  1183. and consummately.

  1184. His kingdom

  1185. will cover the earth.

1186. We do not yet see

  1187. all things put under

  1188. his feet,

  1189. Hebrews tells us,

  1190. but we know

  1191. he is the king.

  1192. Luke 18,

  1193. as we read earlier,

  1194. Jesus is teaching

  1195. those who came

1196. into the house of God

  1197. a place that's meant

1198. to be a house of prayer.

  1199. And he said,

  1200. a Pharisee stood

  1201. and prayed

  1202. with himself,

  1203. God, I thank you

  1204. I'm not like

  1205. other men sinners.

  1206. A man trying

  1207. to manipulate God,

  1208. trying to self-promote

1209. within the kingdom of God,

  1210. just like the Amalekite.

  1211. And telling God,

  1212. here's a list of reasons

  1213. why you should

  1214. show me your favor.

  1215. And Jesus said,

  1216. there is another man

  1217. standing far off

1218. who would not so much

  1219. raise his eyes

  1220. to heaven,

1221. but he pounded his chest

  1222. saying,

  1223. God,

  1224. be merciful to me,

  1225. a sinner.

  1226. I tell you,

  1227. Jesus said,

  1228. to all those listening

  1229. then and now,

  1230. this man

1231. went down to his house

  1232. justified,

  1233. the one that said,

  1234. have mercy on me,

  1235. Lord,

1236. the one that bowed low

  1237. before God,

  1238. that humbled himself

  1239. before the true king.

  1240. The other man

  1241. did not go home

  1242. forgiven or justified.

  1243. For everyone

  1244. who exalts himself

  1245. will be humbled

1246. and he who humbles himself

  1247. will be exalted.

  1248. The Samalekite

  1249. tried to get

  1250. the anointed king

  1251. to remember him

1252. based on what he brought

1253. and what he had claimed

  1254. to do.

  1255. He tried to secure

1256. a place in the kingdom

  1257. of God

  1258. based on his own

  1259. merits.

  1260. Lord Jesus,

  1261. remember

  1262. me

1263. who did all of this

  1264. for you.

  1265. Brethren and sister,

  1266. if that's your prayer

  1267. or your attitude

  1268. toward the Lord,

  1269. there is no place.

1270. We need to humble ourselves,

1271. put all those things aside.

  1272. It's the sinner

  1273. just like the thief

  1274. on the cross

  1275. who had nothing

  1276. to bring,

  1277. nothing to offer

  1278. the true king.

  1279. I think the reason

  1280. we're so encouraged

  1281. by the criminal

  1282. on the cross

  1283. is because

  1284. his faith

  1285. in that moment

  1286. as he's dying,

  1287. it's what we all

  1288. cry out

  1289. and we do have

  1290. some things

  1291. we can look to

  1292. in our lives

  1293. and that man

  1294. in that moment

  1295. had nothing

  1296. and he cried out,

  1297. Lord,

  1298. remember me

  1299. when you come

  1300. into your kingdom.

  1301. That's the same prayer

  1302. that the Amalekites

  1303. asking David

  1304. in other words

  1305. and that's our prayer

  1306. in this life

  1307. and as we think

  1308. about the life

  1309. to come,

  1310. Lord,

  1311. will you remember me

  1312. when you come

  1313. in your kingdom?

1314. Is there more I can do

  1315. to have that place

  1316. secured with you?

  1317. But be encouraged,

  1318. brothers and sisters.

  1319. Like,

  1320. this is Jesus'

  1321. own words,

  1322. the sinner

  1323. who said,

  1324. beating his chest,

  1325. have mercy,

  1326. I'm a sinner.

  1327. That's all I have

  1328. to bring to you.

  1329. Or the criminal

  1330. on the cross.

  1331. There's nothing,

  1332. no basis

  1333. for Christ

  1334. to remember him.

  1335. When Christ

  1336. is going to remember

  1337. that criminal,

  1338. all he'll be able

  1339. to think of is

  1340. there's nothing

  1341. he did good,

  1342. he was found guilty

  1343. of crimes

  1344. deserving a torturous

  1345. !

  1346. death on the cross.

  1347. What can that man

  1348. point to

  1349. to be remembered for?

  1350. Based on what?

  1351. And you know

  1352. what our Lord Jesus

  1353. said to that man

  1354. and he says this

  1355. to you and me,

  1356. today,

1357. you will be with me

  1358. in paradise.

  1359. I will remember

  1360. you in my kingdom.

  1361. Not because you

  1362. have brought me

  1363. anything of your

  1364. own merit,

  1365. but because I

  1366. purchased you

  1367. with my very

  1368. own blood.

  1369. It's based on

  1370. faith that Jesus

  1371. Christ welcomes

  1372. sinners like you

  1373. and me into

  1374. his kingdom.

  1375. It's based on us

  1376. simply trusting

  1377. he is who

  1378. he says he is.

  1379. And we are saved

  1380. on the basis

  1381. of what he

  1382. has promised.

  1383. That God

  1384. is gracious

  1385. and merciful,

  1386. abounding

  1387. in steadfast

  1388. love

  1389. and faithfulness

  1390. to sinners

  1391. like you

  1392. and me.

  1393. Do you receive

  1394. that promise

  1395. again today?

  1396. Do you trust

  1397. this?

  1398. Then you can

  1399. pray with confidence

  1400. knowing the answer,

  1401. Lord,

  1402. remember me

  1403. when you come

  1404. into your kingdom

  1405. and you know

  1406. your place

  1407. is secure

  1408. with Christ.

  1409. Let's pray

  1410. and thank

  1411. our great Lord.

  1412. Lord,

  1413. Lord,

  1414. we confess

  1415. our faith

  1416. is weak,

  1417. but we confess

  1418. in the same breath

  1419. that our Savior

  1420. is great.

  1421. Lord,

  1422. oh Lord,

  1423. it's our flesh

  1424. in us

  1425. that always

  1426. makes us think

  1427. we need to do

  1428. more to please you,

  1429. more to make

  1430. ourselves saved,

  1431. secure in you

  1432. forever.

  1433. Help us to receive

  1434. again today

  1435. the simple,

  1436. glorious gospel

  1437. truth

  1438. that God

  1439. so loved us

  1440. that he sent

  1441. his only

  1442. begotten son,

  1443. Jesus Christ,

  1444. to save sinners

  1445. like us

  1446. that whosoever

  1447. will believe

  1448. what he has

  1449. promised

  1450. shall have

  1451. eternal

  1452. life.

  1453. Help us to know

  1454. this today,

  1455. Lord.

  1456. Be stirred up

  1457. to love you more

  1458. because you first

  1459. loved us

  1460. and gave your son

  1461. for us.

  1462. May you be glorified,

  1463. Father,

  1464. in this church.

  1465. Amen.
