  1. 2 Samuel chapter 1, starting at verse 17.

    2 Samuel 1 chapter mention

  2. I'll read this trusting that it's God's inspired, inerrant, clear, sufficient, powerful word for you and me, his people.

  3. 2 Samuel chapter 1, starting at verse 17.

    2 Samuel 1 chapter mention

  4. Then David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son,

  5. and he told them to teach the children of Judah the song of the bow.

  6. Indeed, it is written in the book of Jashur.

  7. The beauty of Israel is slain on your high places.

  8. How the mighty have fallen.

  9. Tell it not to Gath. Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon.

  10. Lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice.

  11. Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

  12. O mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, nor rain upon you, nor fields of offerings.

  13. For the shield of the mighty is cast away there.

  14. The shield of Saul not anointed with oil.

  15. From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty,

  16. the bow of Jonathan did not turn back.

  17. And the sword of Saul did not return empty.

  18. Saul and Jonathan were beloved and pleasant in their lives and in their death.

  19. They were not divided.

  20. They were swifter than eagles.

  21. They were stronger than lions.

  22. O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul,

  23. who clothed you in scarlet with luxury,

  24. who put ornaments of gold on your apparel.

  25. How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle.

  26. Jonathan was slain in your high places.

  27. I am distressed for you.

  28. My brother Jonathan, you have been very pleasant to me.

  29. Your love to me was wonderful,

  30. surpassing the love of women.

  31. How the mighty have fallen,

  32. and the weapons of war perished.

  33. The word of God for the people of God.

  34. Thanks be to God.

  35. Please be seated.

  36. Please pray with me.

  37. O Lord, we ask that your Holy Spirit will make clear,

  38. illuminate your word to your people today.

  39. Lord, we pray that Christ will be lifted up and exalted,

  40. that your Holy Spirit will apply Christ to your people today through faith.

  41. Lord, we pray that Christ will nourish your people

  42. with those spiritual nutrients that we need.

  43. You know where we're deficient, Lord.

  44. Please take these ordinary words

  45. and use it in an extraordinary way by your power for your glory.

  46. Please help the preacher to preach Christ

  47. with the freedom of a friend

  48. and with the affection of a brother.

  49. For your glory and for Christ's sake we pray.

  50. Amen.

  51. Memory is a powerful thing.

  52. Aristotle called it the scribe of the soul.

  53. Memory, according to Webster's Dictionary of 1828,

  54. is the faculty of the mind

  55. by which we retain knowledge of past events.

  56. And similar to that is our recollection of a memory.

  57. Recollection is the operation

  58. by which ideas are recalled to the memory

  59. or revived in the mind.

  60. How we process a significant event in our lives

  61. will shape the way we remember it.

  62. Hasn't that been true in your experience as well?

  63. What's fascinating that I learned this week

  64. is that modern neurologists, studying the brain,

  65. it tells us that every time a person recalls a memory,

  66. you are editing and rewriting it.

  67. Think how powerful our memories are.

  68. Because we are fallen creatures,

  69. our emotions and our memory

  70. can distort our perceptions of past events.

  71. Well, leading up to our sermon passage today,

  72. Saul and all of his sons, the princes, all died.

  73. And there's Israel.

  74. It's a picture, a shadow of the kingdom of heaven

  75. come onto earth.

  76. But this kingdom is kingless.

  77. The nation got its front teeth punched out.

  78. What is the whole kingdom feeling right now?

  79. How will God's people process this event?

  80. How will they look back on this horrible defeat?

  81. And how will they store these memories

  82. of Saul's entire reign as their king?

  83. David has been anointed king,

  84. but he's not yet ruling completely.

  85. I believe what we have in our sermon passage for today

  86. is God, by the Holy Spirit,

  87. working how he worked mysteriously in the old covenant,

  88. using David to shepherd the emotions

  89. and the memory of the kingdom.

  90. He's shepherding their emotions

  91. and their national memory of God's people.

  92. Look at verse 17.

  93. We read that David lamented with this song.

  94. It's a dirge,

  95. which is a song you sing in a time of sadness and mourning.

  96. He's sad over the loss of the nation,

  97. but especially Saul and Jonathan are the two subjects.

  98. Verse 18 is very interesting on the purpose of this song.

  99. Look at verse 18.

  100. David commands that it be taught to the children of Judah.

  101. And he called it the song of the bow.

  102. That's the title.

  103. Why Judah?

  104. Well, Judah is the tribe that David's from,

  105. and it's the land where he's been traveling,

  106. been closest to,

  107. where he's beginning to consolidate an army,

  108. people following him.

  109. He'll soon begin acting as king of Judah

  110. before he becomes the king of the whole nation.

  111. And he wants the children,

  112. the next generation in Judah,

  113. to remember this event in this way.

  114. So he's very careful with how he does it.

  115. And he ordered that this be written

  116. in the book of Jasher.

  117. Do you see that word, Jasher, in verse 18?

  118. That Hebrew word means upright.

  119. The book of the upright.

  120. You're supposed to read this book.

  121. It's been lost to history.

  122. We don't know much about it or anything too specific,

  123. but it's mentioned also in the book of Joshua

  124. after the Lord did something mighty.

  125. Write it in the book of Jasher.

  126. And it's a book for the upright,

  127. the men of valor,

  128. for the army to be inspired and remembered.

  129. And that's how David wants this death of Saul and Jonathan

  130. to be remembered,

  131. as an inspiration for the army in the future.

  132. Before we walk through this song itself,

  133. some of us are united to Christ.

  134. We're saved.

  135. We know God has declared us to be righteous.

  136. But many of us, at least if you're like me,

  137. we are still tormented by our own broken flesh.

  138. 1 John 3.20 admits this.

  139. Our hearts condemn us still.

  140. He's writing to the Christians, to the church.

  141. Our hearts still condemn us.

  142. But God is greater than our heart.

  143. Brothers and sisters,

  144. we need Christ to shepherd our hearts,

  145. to shepherd our emotions,

  146. and maybe even to heal our memories.

  147. So the title of today's sermon is this.

  148. O army of God,

  149. remember this mountain.

  150. Here's four reasons that David gives us.

  151. Number one,

  152. O army of God,

  153. remember this mountain

  154. where the glory of God's people was slain.

  155. Remember this mountain

  156. where the glory of God's people was slain.

  157. That's what he says in verse 19.

  158. The beauty or glory of Israel

  159. is slain in your high places.

  160. How the mighty have fallen.

  161. And that's the refrain.

  162. He says it three times.

  163. How the mighty have fallen.

  164. In verse 20, he says,

  165. tell it not in Gath.

  166. Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon.

  167. Why these two places?

  168. Well, these are mighty hubs

  169. for the army of the enemy,

  170. the Philistines.

  171. Don't let them know what happened.

  172. He says,

  173. lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice.

  174. Lest the daughters of the uncircumcised,

  175. those people that are outside of God's covenant,

  176. will triumph.

  177. What we have going on

  178. is David calling the people of God,

  179. the army,

  180. to sing and remember this,

  181. how the mighty have fallen.

  182. But don't let them hear what we're saying.

  183. We need to process this emotion.

  184. We need to grieve it.

  185. But don't let them know

  186. because we're at war still.

  187. The war is not over.

  188. It's a worship war.

  189. It's a fight over what will be sung

  190. and to whom it will be proclaimed.

  191. This is so fascinating to me

  192. because it's David's response

  193. to the last actions

  194. we saw the Philistines take.

  195. You can flip back probably one leaf

  196. in your Bible

  197. to 1 Samuel chapter 31,

    1 Samuel 31 chapter mention

  198. the last chapter of 1 Samuel.

  199. And look at verses 9 and 10.

  200. Here's the last action of the Philistines.

  201. Here's what they did.

  202. And now what we get now

  203. is David's response,

  204. his counteraction.

  205. What the Philistines did

  206. was go to Saul's dead body,

  207. cut off his head,

  208. strip off his armor,

  209. and then sent word

  210. throughout the land

  211. of the Philistines

  212. to gospel it,

  213. to declare it

  214. in the temple of their idols

  215. and among the people.

  216. And they put his armor

  217. in the temple of their Ashteroth,

  218. and they fastened his body

  219. to a city wall.

  220. The Philistines are singing

  221. their own songs.

  222. They're proclaiming

  223. their own good news.

  224. And they're worshiping

  225. in their temples

  226. about this great victory

  227. over God's people.

  228. people.

  229. David's calling

  230. the army of God

  231. to grieve over

  232. the loss of this battle,

  233. but the war is not over.

  234. Don't let the enemy

  235. rejoice over us.

  236. He's shepherding their emotions

  237. and how they're going

  238. to process this event.

  239. Instead,

  240. he's calling the people,

  241. lament with me.

  242. He says,

  243. don't let the daughters

  244. of the Philistines hear it,

  245. but now there's a contrasting line

  246. later on in this poem,

  247. in this song.

  248. Look at verse 24

  249. of our sermon passage.

  250. He speaks directly

  251. to another set of daughters

  252. in verse 24.

  253. O daughters of Israel,

  254. weep for Saul.

  255. See, they're cheering

  256. about Saul's death,

  257. but we are honoring Saul.

  258. He's calling

  259. the next generation

  260. of Israel

  261. to keep the fifth commandment,

  262. to honor the authorities

  263. God has put over us,

  264. even though Saul

  265. was not worthy of honor.

  266. this office

  267. that he filled,

  268. the office of an earthly king

  269. over God's people,

  270. is worthy of honor.

  271. So weep with me,

  272. O daughters of Israel.

  273. And he reminds them

  274. very specifically

  275. of God's providence

  276. through King Saul.

  277. Look at verse 24.

  278. He clothed you

  279. in scarlet

  280. with luxury,

  281. who put ornaments

  282. of gold

  283. on your apparel.

  284. See,

  285. even from the hand

  286. of Saul,

  287. the Lord delivered

  288. blessings

  289. for his people.

  290. I love Calvin's comment

  291. on this.

  292. Quote,

  293. even if our enemies

  294. are the most evil

  295. in the world,

  296. David could have felt

  297. that about Saul.

  298. God still

  299. does not want

  300. his grace

  301. to be overlooked.

  302. That's the end

  303. of Calvin's quote.

  304. So the first reason

  305. David gives the nation

  306. is this,

  307. army of God.

  308. Remember this mountain

  309. where the glory

  310. of God's people

  311. was slain.

  312. We're going to lament it,

  313. but we're not going

  314. to let the enemy

  315. rejoice over us.

  316. We'll weep together.

  317. We'll sing together.

  318. We're going to go

  319. through this crisis together,

  320. but the war

  321. is not over.

  322. Here's the second reason.

  323. O army of God,

  324. remember this mountain

  325. where God's anointed

  326. cast away his shield.

  327. Remember this mountain

  328. where God's anointed

  329. cast away his shield.

  330. I'm not a literary expert,

  331. but those that I've read

  332. who are and have studied

  333. Hebrew poetry,

  334. which this is a wonderful

  335. example of Hebrew poetry.

  336. They have been blown away

  337. at the level of complexity

  338. and beauty

  339. in the structure

  340. of this song.

  341. This song did not make it

  342. into the Psalter,

  343. but it did make it

  344. into Holy Scripture.

  345. It's part of the inspired

  346. word of God.

  347. And one of the literary devices

  348. that David uses

  349. is called apostrophim.

  350. It's when a speaker

  351. breaks off from addressing

  352. the audience

  353. or the narrative

  354. and directs his speech

  355. to an absent person

  356. or a personified object.

  357. This is what David does.

  358. He later on is going to speak

  359. to the daughters of Israel

  360. like we just saw.

  361. He's going to speak

  362. to Jonathan,

  363. even though Jonathan is dead.

  364. His body is buried

  365. and his soul is with the Lord.

  366. He's speaking to him

  367. as an apostrophe.

  368. But in verse 21,

  369. who does David speak to?

  370. Look in your own copy

  371. of God's Word.

  372. Verse 21,

  373. O mountains of Gilboa.

  374. Remember the word in Hebrew,

  375. Gilboa is springs

  376. of living water.

  377. So it's a mountain

  378. or a hill

  379. from which comes bubbling up

  380. these springs

  381. that flow into the valley.

  382. And David's speaking

  383. directly to that mountain now.

  384. Let there be no dew

  385. nor rain upon you

  386. nor fields

  387. nor offerings.

  388. He's cursing this mountain.

  389. This is a cursed mountain now.

  390. It's supposed to be

  391. springs of life.

  392. May you get no rain,

  393. no water,

  394. no more life

  395. from you.

  396. You are now

  397. a mountain of death.

  398. So may you be dried up,

  399. lifeless.

  400. For the shield

  401. of the mighty

  402. is cast away there.

  403. When is it that a soldier

  404. casts away his shield?

  405. When does his shield

  406. drop off to his side?

  407. It's when the soldier

  408. goes lifeless.

  409. It's the last thing

  410. to go in a battle

  411. when you're being

  412. overrun by the enemy.

  413. The last thing to drop

  414. will be the shield.

  415. More specifically,

  416. he says,

  417. the shield of Saul.

  418. He's associating

  419. King Saul,

  420. his tormentor,

  421. his persecutor,

  422. with a piece

  423. of the armor.

  424. And if you think

  425. of Saul,

  426. you probably think

  427. of a different piece

  428. from his arsenal,

  429. right?

  430. You probably think

  431. of Saul who always

  432. had what in his right hand?

  433. He always had

  434. that spear.

  435. And he's always

  436. throwing the spear,

  437. trying to kill David,

  438. trying to kill

  439. his own son,

  440. Jonathan.

  441. And David's still

  442. honoring King Saul,

  443. not associating him

  444. with the spear.

  445. But Saul is the shield.

  446. Nowhere is Saul's

  447. evil family,

  448. rival-seeking spear

  449. mentioned in this

  450. entire song.

  451. Saul is being honored

  452. as the commander-in-chief

  453. of the nation's

  454. department of defense,

  455. the shield.

  456. But he says something

  457. interesting in verse 21.

  458. This shield is not

  459. anointed with oil.

  460. Verse 22,

  461. from the blood

  462. of the slain,

  463. from the fat

  464. of the mighty,

  465. he never retreated.

  466. So the image

  467. we have of Saul

  468. is withstanding

  469. this onslaught,

  470. this rushing

  471. of the army.

  472. And now the shield,

  473. which is his symbol,

  474. is dry.

  475. It's not anointed

  476. with oil.

  477. And it's dropped

  478. to his side.

  479. He never retreated.

  480. He got run over

  481. and he's lifeless.

  482. Soldiers would take oil

  483. and they would rub oil

  484. onto a shield.

  485. If it's a bronze

  486. or copper

  487. or iron shield

  488. or something like that,

  489. the oil would help

  490. to deflect an arrow

  491. or a sword,

  492. help it to glance

  493. off of it.

  494. If you didn't have

  495. very much money

  496. and your shield

  497. was made of leather,

  498. you would still put oil

  499. on it to keep it

  500. from getting stiff

  501. and so that it would

  502. serve its purpose better.

  503. And Saul was the very

  504. first national human

  505. king over Israel,

  506. their first shield.

  507. And David's also using

  508. a layered symbolism.

  509. The shield of the nation

  510. is no longer anointed.

  511. He loves using this word,

  512. no longer Messiah.

  513. Remember that civil magistrates

  514. are appointed by God

  515. to wield the sword.

  516. Pray for rulers,

  517. pray for the government,

  518. pray for local

  519. and national defense

  520. and trust that God

  521. preserves the nation

  522. through them

  523. no matter how evil

  524. or wicked they are.

  525. we still praise the Lord

  526. for it.

  527. But it also leaves us

  528. wanting a shield

  529. for the nation,

  530. for the kingdom

  531. that will be anointed,

  532. that will have the oil

  533. of the Holy Spirit

  534. lifting up the defender

  535. of God's people.

  536. And it's foreshadowing

  537. David coming in

  538. as the next anointed king,

  539. the next anointed shield,

  540. but even beyond that

  541. it's pointing to the great

  542. true shield,

  543. the true defender

  544. of God's people.

  545. So remember this mountain

  546. where God's anointed

  547. cast away his shield.

  548. The third reason

  549. he gives them is this,

  550. O army of God,

  551. remember this mountain

  552. where the valiant

  553. did not turn back.

  554. Remember this mountain

  555. where the valiant

  556. did not turn back.

  557. Now we're going to find out

  558. why David titled this song

  559. the way he did.

  560. Remember it's called

  561. the song of the bow,

  562. but we're all the way down

  563. to verse 22

  564. and we still haven't

  565. heard of the bow.

  566. And now he finally says it

  567. in the end of verse 22.

  568. If Saul was the shield,

  569. it was the bow of Jonathan

  570. that did not turn back.

  571. He's lifting up now

  572. the hero of this whole song

  573. which is Jonathan.

  574. Never became a king,

  575. but he is the one

  576. that the mighty soldiers

  577. in future generations

  578. that are going to read about

  579. and they need to look to him

  580. as their pattern.

  581. He says of Jonathan,

  582. he did not retreat.

  583. We need to picture this scene

  584. a little bit better

  585. and if we turn back again

  586. to the last chapter

  587. of 1 Samuel,

  588. we'll find some help.

  589. Look at 1 Samuel chapter 31,

    1 Samuel 31:1

  590. verse 1.

  591. Verse 1 of the last chapter

  592. of 1 Samuel.

  593. And here's the scene.

  594. As it would be with any battle

  595. that's using hand-to-hand combat.

  596. One side mounts up

  597. on one hill or one mountain,

  598. another side on the other mountain,

  599. another hill,

  600. and in the middle is the valley

  601. where they're all going to rush in

  602. and fight.

  603. Whoever wins in the valley

  604. is going to continue to push up

  605. until they overtake the hill

  606. of the enemy.

  607. And if we look at the very first verse

  608. of 1 Samuel 31,

  609. we get this wonderful insight.

  610. So they go down into the valley

  611. and they fight.

  612. But then Israel retreats

  613. and they run.

  614. Well, where do they run?

  615. They run behind their shield

  616. back onto the top of Mount Gilboa

  617. where King Saul would still be.

  618. So here they are retreating

  619. past their king

  620. trying to hide behind him.

  621. And the progression

  622. in a hand-to-hand combat

  623. would be the poorest soldiers

  624. that are the foot soldiers

  625. go down into the valley first.

  626. And then the archers

  627. send their arrows,

  628. the artillery.

  629. And then the wealthier class

  630. that has land

  631. and can afford to have grass

  632. on which a horse could feed,

  633. that's the equestrian class.

  634. So then the cavalry

  635. could come charging in after.

  636. And the chariots of the Philistines

  637. if the terrain would allow it.

  638. And then finally

  639. would be the nobility,

  640. the king of each one,

  641. just like a chess match.

  642. When you get the king,

  643. it's over.

  644. So doesn't that make sense now

  645. as we read verse one?

  646. There's Jonathan

  647. to the right hand of King Saul

  648. waiting up on top of Mount Gilboa.

  649. And here come the Philistines army

  650. overrunning them.

  651. And David says,

  652. if you go back to our sermon passage,

  653. verse 22,

  654. the sword of Saul

  655. did not return empty

  656. and the bow of Jonathan

  657. did not turn back.

  658. There they are.

  659. Jonathan's still firing off arrows

  660. as they charge at him

  661. and Saul with his sword drawn,

  662. not going to run away.

  663. Saul and Jonathan,

  664. he says in verse 23,

  665. were beloved

  666. and pleasant in their lives

  667. and in their death.

  668. They were not divided.

  669. They were swifter than eagles.

  670. They were stronger than lions.

  671. If you look at 1 Samuel 31,

    1 Samuel 31:3

  672. verse 3,

  673. we read it was the archers

  674. that hit Saul

  675. and he was severely wounded

  676. by the archers.

  677. And that might be another reason

  678. why David named this song

  679. the song of the bow.

  680. David is reclaiming the very weapon

  681. that defeated King Saul.

  682. The Lord loves to turn

  683. a symbol of defeat

  684. into a memorial

  685. of his might,

  686. doesn't he?

  687. Yes,

  688. Jonathan died,

  689. but Jonathan did not retreat.

  690. Write this down in the book

  691. so that the next generation

  692. of the army

  693. can be inspired.

  694. David loves to use

  695. the term men of valor,

  696. these valiant men.

  697. And he has his mighty men

  698. that will soon join him

  699. and they'll go around

  700. and by the power of the Spirit,

  701. God will give them

  702. great victories.

  703. But he holds up Jonathan.

  704. He points to his good friend Jonathan,

  705. even though he's probably

  706. 40 years older than him,

  707. as a valiant man.

  708. Even though he died,

  709. he's the one

  710. we try to remember

  711. and fight with,

  712. a fight like

  713. when we're in battle.

  714. Remember his valor,

  715. learn from him.

  716. Upright soldiers,

  717. fight to the end.

  718. So army of God,

  719. David says,

  720. remember this valley,

  721. this mountain

  722. where valiant men

  723. did not turn back.

  724. Well,

  725. the fourth reason

  726. David gives the army

  727. is this.

  728. Army of God,

  729. remember this mountain

  730. where the beloved prince

  731. was slain.

  732. Remember this mountain

  733. where the beloved prince

  734. was slain.

  735. Look at verse 27.

  736. How the mighty have fallen.

  737. He says,

  738. the weapons of war perished.

  739. Weapons of war

  740. perish.

  741. Who was the Philistines

  742. greatest weapon

  743. of war?

  744. We joked about

  745. how Goliath

  746. was a weapon

  747. of mass destruction,

  748. undefeated.

  749. And who was Israel's

  750. Goliath?

  751. A head and shoulders above,

  752. taller than anyone else

  753. in all of Israel.

  754. It was Saul.

  755. Saul was Israel's giant

  756. and now he has perished

  757. just like Goliath has.

  758. Both ended up

  759. being decapitated

  760. and both heads

  761. were carried around

  762. as a trophy of war

  763. for the other side.

  764. God teaches

  765. that the weapons

  766. of this world,

  767. metal,

  768. swords,

  769. shields,

  770. spearheads,

  771. remember it was all

  772. the Philistines

  773. that had a monopoly

  774. on metal

  775. and blacksmith.

  776. And Israelites

  777. had to get all their weapons

  778. from the Philistines

  779. and David is just saying

  780. the weapons of war

  781. have perished.

  782. They've gone away.

  783. They've faded away.

  784. There's nothing

  785. to put our hope in anymore

  786. if we're going to have to fight

  787. in the way of the world.

  788. And even though it's subtle,

  789. I believe he's calling to mind

  790. to the Israelites

  791. what they already know

  792. from other parts of Scripture

  793. but have forgotten.

  794. And it's this,

  795. that God's people

  796. don't fight

  797. using the weapons

  798. or tactics

  799. of this world.

  800. And the rest of Scripture

  801. makes it very clear,

  802. including the Old Testament.

  803. May those ways

  804. of the world perish.

  805. 2 Chronicles 20.15 says,

  806. Thus says the Lord

  807. to you,

  808. Do not be afraid

  809. or dismayed

  810. because of

  811. this great multitude

  812. for the battle

  813. is not yours

  814. but God's.

  815. Proverbs 21.31

  816. David's son

  817. will write this,

  818. The horse is prepared

  819. for the day of battle

  820. but deliverance

  821. is of the Lord.

  822. Psalm 20.7

  823. This is a Psalm of David.

  824. Some trust in chariots

  825. and some in horses

  826. but we will remember

  827. the name of the Lord our God.

  828. Psalm 46.9

  829. God is the one.

  830. Like we sang today

  831. this powerful song,

  832. God makes wars cease

  833. to the ends of the earth.

  834. God breaks the bow

  835. and cuts the spear in two.

  836. He burns the chariot

  837. with fire.

  838. Well, the chariot

  839. is the,

  840. it's the tank

  841. of the Philistine army.

  842. I mean,

  843. this is made of metal,

  844. it's pulled by horses

  845. and if you get in the way

  846. of a Philistine chariot,

  847. you are done with.

  848. Don't worry about

  849. the weapons of this world.

  850. The Lord burns

  851. the chariots

  852. of the Philistines

  853. with fire.

  854. The Lord is the one

  855. who will fight for us.

  856. But in this final movement,

  857. these last few verses,

  858. David brings that refrain

  859. to light one more time

  860. in verse 25.

  861. How the mighty

  862. have fallen

  863. in the midst

  864. of the battle.

  865. Notice what he says next.

  866. Jonathan

  867. was slain

  868. in your high places.

  869. By repeating

  870. the refrain here

  871. one last time

  872. and using a literary device

  873. called parallelism,

  874. David is

  875. saying,

  876. what I said initially

  877. was correct.

  878. I had said,

  879. how the mighty

  880. have fallen

  881. the glory of God

  882. in the high places.

  883. And now he's interpreting

  884. what he had said

  885. in verse 19

  886. by repeating it

  887. and saying,

  888. what's more

  889. and telling us

  890. how to understand

  891. the glory of God,

  892. the beauty of God.

  893. And what he says here

  894. is that Jonathan

  895. is exactly that.

  896. The glory of God

  897. that was slain

  898. is Jonathan.

  899. Jonathan

  900. Jonathan

  901. is the glory

  902. of Israel.

  903. Prince Jonathan

  904. is the one

  905. that the upright

  906. should weep over

  907. and never forget

  908. and strive to be like.

  909. And when you fight,

  910. fight remembering

  911. Jonathan.

  912. And he weaves

  913. into this

  914. shepherding

  915. of a nation's emotions,

  916. a nation's memory

  917. forming

  918. and memory writing.

  919. He weaves in

  920. his own personal lament.

  921. He's a transparent

  922. worshiper of God,

  923. grieving

  924. and letting the whole nation

  925. see his grief

  926. in verse 26.

  927. I am distressed

  928. for you,

  929. my brother

  930. Jonathan.

  931. You have been

  932. very pleasant

  933. to me.

  934. Your love

  935. to me

  936. was wonderful,

  937. surpassing

  938. the love

  939. of women.

  940. He's declaring

  941. for the whole nation

  942. to hear that

  943. somehow

  944. there was a ministry

  945. David received

  946. through this prince

  947. that's almost beyond

  948. what words

  949. or comparisons

  950. in this life

  951. can communicate.

  952. Jonathan

  953. is to be remembered

  954. as the bow

  955. and we're to sing

  956. the song

  957. of the bow.

  958. That bow

  959. would draw

  960. to David's memory

  961. that last,

  962. second to the last

  963. encounter,

  964. but that last

  965. great act

  966. of kindness

  967. where Jonathan

  968. had his dad

  969. pressuring him,

  970. King Saul,

  971. to become

  972. the next king

  973. and making David

  974. his enemy.

  975. Don't you see

  976. David's going

  977. to get everything

  978. that should be yours?

  979. And Jonathan

  980. took his bow

  981. with him

  982. and said,

  983. David,

  984. hide behind

  985. that rock

  986. of escape.

  987. I'll use my bow

  988. and I'll signal

  989. to you

  990. how God's

  991. going to preserve

  992. your life.

  993. And he said,

  994. David,

  995. flee.

  996. It's not going

  997. to be safe

  998. under anywhere

  999. that my dad,

  1000. King Saul,

  1001. has jurisdiction.

  1002. Remember 1 Samuel

  1003. 18.4,

  1004. Jonathan then

  1005. took off

  1006. the royal

  1007. princely robe.

  1008. He had his other,

  1009. you know,

  1010. garments I'm sure,

  1011. but the symbol

  1012. of being a prince

  1013. he gave to David.

  1014. And he also gave

  1015. David his armor.

  1016. Listen to the details

  1017. of 1 Samuel 18.4,

  1018. even to his sword

  1019. and his bow

  1020. and his belt.

1021. The song of the bow.

  1022. David had kept

  1023. the head of Saul

  1024. everywhere he went.

  1025. I'm sure he would

  1026. cherish this gift

  1027. from Prince Jonathan,

  1028. the bow.

  1029. Jonathan,

  1030. brothers and sisters,

  1031. I hope you see,

  1032. was for David,

  1033. who we now know

  1034. in the light

  1035. of all revelation,

  1036. our Lord Jesus

  1037. is for us

  1038. who he saved.

  1039. Jonathan is a shadow

  1040. of Christ.

  1041. It's Christ

  1042. in his self-sacrifice,

  1043. his covenant faithfulness,

  1044. giving us his robes

  1045. of righteousness,

  1046. proving

  1047. his trusting obedience

  1048. to his father

  1049. to the very end,

  1050. ultimately by his death.

  1051. So, Church of God,

1052. we can't be done today

  1053. until we remember together

  1054. another place.

  1055. And I pray that it's

  1056. more than just

  1057. our memory being formed

  1058. the way God designed.

  1059. I pray that it's

  1060. the Spirit

  1061. rewriting the memory

1062. of the work of Christ

1063. for you who know him.

  1064. Oh, Church of God,

  1065. remember this place

  1066. where a much greater

  1067. pivotal battle

  1068. took place.

  1069. It was a rock

  1070. in the shape

  1071. of a skull.

  1072. In Hebrew,

  1073. it's Golgotha.

  1074. In Latin,

  1075. it's Calvaria.

  1076. It's where we get

  1077. the word Calvary.

  1078. And as worshipers

  1079. traveled to the place

1080. where God would meet them,

  1081. the temple in Jerusalem

  1082. on a hill

  1083. called Zion,

  1084. they would travel

  1085. and pilgrimage there

  1086. singing special psalms

  1087. called the Songs

  1088. of Ascent,

  1089. climbing up,

  1090. because they had to

1091. go up this mountain range

  1092. toward Jerusalem

  1093. to the temple.

1094. And our Lord Jesus Christ

1095. met the forces of darkness

1096. and the power of death

  1097. at this place,

1098. at the top of this mountain.

  1099. The Gospels say

  1100. that the crucifixion site

  1101. was near the city,

  1102. but outside the walls,

  1103. and it was visible

  1104. from a distance

  1105. as ridge lines are.

1106. You can see the cross

  1107. as you're climbing up

  1108. toward the place

  1109. where God will meet

  1110. His people.

  1111. O army of God,

  1112. remember this mountain

  1113. where our beloved prince,

  1114. the ultimate glory

  1115. of God's people

  1116. was slain.

  1117. Philippians 2, 7 and 8,

  1118. He made Himself

  1119. of no reputation,

  1120. taking the form

  1121. of a bondservant,

1122. and coming in the likeness

  1123. of men,

  1124. He humbled Himself

  1125. and became obedient

1126. to the point of death,

  1127. even the death

  1128. of the cross.

  1129. O army of God,

  1130. remember this mountain

  1131. where God's anointed

  1132. cast away His shield.

  1133. Our Lord could have

  1134. shielded Himself

1135. in any way He wanted,

  1136. and He knew this

1137. even in His final moments.

  1138. In Matthew 26,

  1139. Jesus said,

1140. I could pray to my Father

1141. and He will provide me

1142. with more than 12 legions

  1143. of angels.

1144. We read in John 10

  1145. that our Lord Jesus

  1146. laid down His life

  1147. willingly.

1148. He did not shield Himself

  1149. from the cross.

  1150. He says,

1151. I lay down my life

1152. that I may take it again.

1153. No one takes it from me,

1154. but I lay it down

  1155. of myself.

1156. I have power to lay it down,

  1157. and I have power

1158. to take it up again.

1159. This command I have received

  1160. from my Father.

1161. And He was a valiant man

  1162. to the very end.

  1163. O army of God,

  1164. remember this mountain

  1165. where the valiant

  1166. did not turn back.

  1167. Isaiah 50, verse 5,

    Isaiah 50:5

  1168. gives the words

  1169. that Jesus fulfilled.

  1170. I was obedient.

1171. I did not turn away.

1172. I set my face like flint.

  1173. Luke 9, 51 confirms.

  1174. Jesus steadfastly

1175. set His face to do it.

  1176. O army of God,

  1177. remember this mountain

  1178. where the weapons

  1179. of war perished.

  1180. Our Lord disarmed

  1181. the devil

1182. and the host of demons.

  1183. They have no power

  1184. over Him

  1185. or His kingdom.

  1186. 2 Corinthians 10,

  1187. the verses we read

  1188. a moment ago,

  1189. for though we walk

  1190. in the flesh,

  1191. we do not war

  1192. according to the flesh.

  1193. for the weapons

  1194. of our warfare

  1195. are not carnal,

  1196. but mighty in God

  1197. for pulling down

  1198. strongholds.

  1199. So army of God,

  1200. remember this mountain.

  1201. That's what all

1202. of the New Testament writers

  1203. by the inspiration

  1204. of the Spirit

  1205. call us to do.

  1206. Think of Hebrews 12, 2.

1207. Look to our beloved prince

  1208. who climbed that mountain,

  1209. we could say.

  1210. The author and finisher

  1211. of our faith,

  1212. who for the joy

1213. that was set before Him

  1214. endured the cross,

  1215. despising the shame.

  1216. And our Lord Jesus

  1217. didn't stay

  1218. on that mountain.

  1219. The Lord loves

  1220. to turn a symbol

  1221. of defeat

  1222. into a memorial

  1223. of His might.

  1224. Once again,

  1225. we remember the cross

  1226. empty now,

  1227. don't we?

  1228. He climbed high

  1229. above the cross

  1230. to a greater mountain,

  1231. the kingdom of heaven.

  1232. And He arose,

  1233. He lives,

  1234. He ascended

  1235. to the highest heaven.

  1236. And He sat down

  1237. at the right hand

  1238. of the throne

  1239. of God Almighty.

  1240. And from there,

  1241. He reigns

  1242. as the true King.

  1243. Isaiah 43, 25.

  1244. I, even I,

  1245. am He

  1246. who blots out

  1247. your transgressions

  1248. for my own namesake.

  1249. I will not remember

  1250. your sins.

  1251. Because of His work,

  1252. Jesus Christ fulfilled

  1253. what God has promised

  1254. all along.

  1255. and even though

  1256. God is omniscient,

  1257. He's all-knowing,

  1258. He promises

  1259. that the work

  1260. of Christ,

  1261. it erases

  1262. our sin

  1263. from God's

  1264. memory,

  1265. so to speak.

  1266. It's the words

  1267. of Scripture.

  1268. Hebrews 10, 17,

  1269. God promises

  1270. your sins,

  1271. brothers and sisters

  1272. in Christ,

  1273. your sins

  1274. and lawless deeds.

  1275. God says,

  1276. I will remember

  1277. no more.

  1278. This is how great

  1279. was Christ's victory.

  1280. And His victory

  1281. transforms our memory.

  1282. If God doesn't remember

  1283. your sins

  1284. and mine,

  1285. you cannot

  1286. let those sins

  1287. and those past faults

  1288. continue to accuse you

  1289. and torment you.

  1290. God says,

  1291. I will not

  1292. let those sins

  1293. for which Christ died

  1294. be counted against you,

  1295. be imputed

  1296. against you anymore.

  1297. Your conscience

  1298. in Christ

  1299. is now freed

  1300. from the legal

  1301. weight

  1302. of these past sins.

  1303. Our memory

  1304. is to be

  1305. renewed

  1306. in Christ.

  1307. Let Christ

  1308. rewrite

  1309. your own memory

1310. of what He has done

  1311. and what that means

  1312. for you

  1313. who are in Him.

  1314. We are now freed

  1315. to focus

  1316. our memory

  1317. on God's

  1318. faithfulness

  1319. rather than

  1320. our failures.

  1321. Some of you

  1322. have testified

1323. how this is a work

  1324. God has done

  1325. in your life

  1326. recently

1327. in the last few years

  1328. and it's such a gift,

  1329. isn't it?

  1330. We don't

  1331. approach God

  1332. being accused

1333. of all of our failures.

  1334. We approach God

  1335. to fix our thoughts,

  1336. our memories,

  1337. and remembrance

  1338. on His great work

  1339. and His great faithfulness.

  1340. That's why we love

  1341. all of our hymns

  1342. but one of them

  1343. comes to mind

  1344. especially.

  1345. It's when Satan

  1346. tempts me

  1347. to despair

  1348. and tells me

  1349. of the guilt

  1350. within

  1351. our hearts condemning.

  1352. Upward

  1353. I look

  1354. and see Him

  1355. there

  1356. who made

  1357. an end

  1358. of all my sin

  1359. because my

  1360. sinless Savior

  1361. died,

  1362. Jesus Christ.

  1363. My soul

  1364. is now counted

  1365. free

  1366. for God

  1367. the just

  1368. is satisfied

  1369. to look on

  1370. Him

  1371. and pardon me.

  1372. Psalm 77

  1373. I will remember

  1374. the works

  1375. of the Lord.

  1376. Surely I will remember

  1377. your wonders

  1378. of old.

  1379. I will also

  1380. meditate

  1381. on all

  1382. your work

  1383. and talk

  1384. of your deeds.

  1385. Psalm 111

  1386. for

  1387. He has made

  1388. His wonderful

  1389. works

  1390. to be remembered.

  1391. The Lord

  1392. is gracious

  1393. and full

  1394. of compassion.

  1395. This is what

  1396. we remember.

  1397. This is what

  1398. we meditate on.

  1399. This is what

  1400. we put our eyes

  1401. upon over

  1402. and over

  1403. again as long

  1404. as our flesh

  1405. continues to

  1406. accuse us.

  1407. So army

  1408. of God

  1409. I pray that

  1410. by the power

  1411. of the Spirit

  1412. we will be

  1413. stirred up

  1414. with love

  1415. for God

  1416. as we remember

  1417. the valor

  1418. of King Jesus

  1419. on that mountain

  1420. where He did not

  1421. retreat for you

  1422. and me

  1423. and His kingdom

  1424. is coming.

  1425. It's coming

  1426. spiritually now

  1427. but it's coming

  1428. consummately

  1429. one day

  1430. and every

  1431. knee will bow

  1432. and every

  1433. tongue will

  1434. confess

  1435. and the host

  1436. of angels

  1437. armies

  1438. will follow

  1439. Him

  1440. the Lord

  1441. of hosts

  1442. and He

  1443. will rule

  1444. and His glory

  1445. will cover

  1446. the new heavens

  1447. the new earth

  1448. like the waters

  1449. cover the sea.

  1450. Let's pray

  1451. longing for this

  1452. great day

  1453. and trusting Him

  1454. by faith

  1455. every day

  1456. until then.

  1457. O Lord

  1458. mighty are

  1459. your works

  1460. and they're

  1461. to be remembered

  1462. you've preserved

  1463. them in Scripture

  1464. for us.

  1465. They prove

  1466. Lord again

  1467. and again

  1468. and again

  1469. you are

  1470. gracious

  1471. and full

  1472. of compassion.

  1473. Please cause us

  1474. Lord to run

  1475. to the cross

  1476. of Jesus

  1477. the Mount

  1478. of Calvary

  1479. and find

  1480. refreshing again

  1481. for our souls

  1482. today Father.

  1483. we ask this

  1484. for your glory

  1485. for Christ's

  1486. sake alone.

  1487. Amen.
