  1. I'll read our sermon passage, which is verse 1 of John 14.

  2. ! I read this trusting that it's God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, sufficient, powerful word for you and for me.

  3. John 14, 1.

  4. The words of Jesus Christ.

  5. Let not your heart be troubled.

  6. You believe in God.

  7. Believe also in me.

  8. The word of God for the people of God.

  9. Thanks be to God. Please be seated.

  10. O living God, three in one, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, we praise you for your faithfulness, Lord, for your covenant kindness to your people.

  11. We thank you for how you have spoken.

  12. You've revealed yourself through Jesus Christ for how all of the scriptures testify of him and for how your Holy Spirit ministers Christ to your people.

  13. Every single one from every nation, tribe, people, and tongue.

  14. Lord, that you give the gift of faith to see Christ.

  15. Lord, that you give the gift of God.

  16. To hear the good news.

  17. To hear the good news.

  18. To respond to the voice of the chief shepherd of our souls.

  19. We pray, Lord, that your Holy Spirit will help Pastor Chris Ewell as he ministers Christ to us today.

  20. We pray that your Holy Spirit will also help us, Lord, to receive Christ.

  21. To pay attention to the words that we're receiving, Lord, as they're words from you.

  22. We pray that your word, Lord, will burn in our hearts.

  23. And that we'll be able to grow and be sustained in our faith because you are the one who purchased your people.

  24. You're the one who made us right.

  25. And you are the one who has committed yourself to sanctifying us until you present us complete and perfect in Christ at the great day when he comes again.

  26. We long for this day, Lord.

  27. And until then, we trust that even receiving this sermon today is one of the means you will use to fulfill your promises.

  28. Please do this, Lord.

  29. For Christ's sake we pray.

  30. Amen.

  31. It is a rich blessing to be with you this morning to minister God's word to you.

  32. A rich blessing from the one who tenderly loves his sheep.

  33. And so may our eyes be fixed upon the great and glorious shepherd of our souls this morning, our Lord Jesus Christ.

  34. So if you would fix your eyes upon our text this morning.

  35. John 14, verse 1.

    John 14:1

  36. If you don't mind, I'd like to pray again.

  37. Father, our glorious God.

  38. God, you are merciful.

  39. You are gracious.

  40. God, our hearts tremble before your holiness.

  41. And Father, let us consider your holiness this morning.

  42. We would consider your great and glorious nature.

  43. That we would consider your sovereign providences.

  44. That the trials and tribulations that you have given us in our life, we want to thank you for them.

  45. For they have grown us.

  46. They have matured us.

  47. And they have allowed us to fix our eyes upon you.

  48. The author and perfecter of our faith.

  49. So I just pray for us this morning, O God.

  50. That your word would cut us like a two-edged sword.

  51. Going down to the very bone and marrow of who we are.

  52. That you would teach us and rebuke us and correct us.

  53. And convict us and convict us and train us in righteousness.

  54. Oh, Father, we thank you, God, for this divinely appointed means of grace that you have given us.

  55. The preaching of your word.

  56. The listening of your word.

  57. And all of us engaged together in unified spirit.

  58. To learn and grow in the gospel of grace.

  59. And we say this in the name of Christ.

  60. Amen.

  61. In our text this morning in John 14, verse 1.

    John 14:1

  62. It says,

  63. Do not let your heart be troubled.

  64. Believe in God.

  65. Believe also in me.

  66. The word of God also reads in Psalms 27, verse 5.

    Psalms 27:5

  67. For in the day of trouble,

  68. He will conceal me in His tabernacle.

  69. In the secret place of His tent,

  70. He will hide me.

  71. He will lift me up on a rock.

  72. And we are welcomed into the Holy of Holies this morning.

  73. In our passage.

  74. To gaze upon the glorious love of our Savior toward His covenant children.

  75. Even reminding us in John 13, verse 1.

    John 13:1

  76. Jesus, knowing that His hour had come,

  77. that He would depart out of this world to the Father,

  78. having loved His own who were in the world.

  79. He loved them to the end.

  80. So at this family tuck,

  81. Christ is gathering in this upper room.

  82. His eleven.

  83. Judas has already left.

  84. And He's loving those that are His.

  85. He's loving them all the way to the end.

  86. So whatever we read in chapters 14, 15, and 16,

  87. from this point forward,

  88. in the upper room discourse,

  89. you must come through the archway,

  90. through the gate,

  91. through this door.

  92. that everything is part of Christ loving His own.

  93. And loving them all the way to the end.

  94. I mean, there are dark hours on the horizon for the eleven who love the Lord.

  95. He has just revealed this at the end of chapter 13.

  96. Three shocking realities.

  97. First, He has told them that one of them will betray Him.

  98. Chapter 13, verse 21.

  99. Truly, truly, truly, I say to you,

  100. that one of you will betray Me.

  101. Second, He has equated glory with the suffering of His cross.

  102. In verse 31.

  103. Now is the Son of Man glorified,

  104. and God is glorified in Him.

  105. For our Lord Jesus,

  106. the unimaginable sufferings of the cross

  107. are but a few short hours away.

  108. Remember, they are to Him unimaginable trials and sufferings.

  109. He has told them that He was going away

  110. and that He could not follow at the present moment.

  111. And third, He's just told Peter

  112. that He would deny Him three times.

  113. Verse 38.

  114. Will you lay down your life for Me?

  115. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  116. a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.

  117. And so He knows that all the other disciples

  118. will even desert Him in His final hours.

  119. For if you strike the shepherd,

  120. the sheep will scatter.

  121. Added to the emotional turmoil

  122. that the disciples felt,

  123. they had been shamed.

  124. Just a few moments later,

  125. walking to the upper room,

  126. they were having a discussion about

  127. who would be the greatest.

  128. Pride was filling their heart.

  129. They were even shamed by their prideful refusal

  130. to wash each other's feet,

  131. which prompted our loving Savior

  132. to stoop down to the servant position.

  133. So what will He do now?

  134. Well, He does what He always has done.

  135. And He will always do for you and I.

  136. He begins to minister the grace of God

  137. to their deeply troubled and deeply confused hearts.

  138. And if there is ever one thing

  139. that we need to understand

  140. and grasp regarding this farewell discourse,

  141. it is this,

  142. that as our Lord Jesus analyzes the needs

  143. of His little children,

  144. His covenant children,

  145. as you will see at the end of chapter 13,

  146. as He, as the covenant head of His family,

  147. seeks to minister to them

  148. and understand what is pressing their need,

  149. what is it do you think that He does

  150. in the last hour before His death?

  151. What He does is He does

  152. in the following chapters,

  153. chapters 14, 15, and 16,

  154. and a closing prayer for them in 17,

  155. He sees the depth of their troubled heart.

  156. He sees the pressing need

  157. that is consuming them.

  158. And what does our Lord Jesus Christ now do?

  159. He does something very remarkable.

  160. It's in this really dark hour

  161. that He gives to them really the clearest light.

  162. And all that He now says,

  163. in essence, He is saying this,

  164. sink your lives into the Holy Trinity

  165. as you trust in the grace of the triune God,

  166. into the glory of the triune God.

  167. Fix your eyes upon the glory of Christ.

  168. It is the glory of the triune God

  169. into the mystery of the triune God.

  170. For your great need this morning

  171. is to discover who God is.

  172. To be reminded of who God is.

  173. Now that would become increasingly clear

  174. as you are reminded of the Upper Room Discourse.

  175. I'm sure most of you have read it.

  176. But the principle lying behind our Lord's teaching

  177. is a principle that we greatly need

  178. to understand for our own spiritual good.

  179. and its significance of grasping

  180. the importance of the doctrine of God.

  181. Knowing God will do more for your troubles

  182. in your life as a Christian

  183. than anything else.

  184. Knowing the will of God

  185. will do more for your life

  186. and the tribulations

  187. than anything else will.

  188. Knowing God will do more

  189. for the mortification of your sin

  190. than anything else.

  191. exploring the height

  192. and the breadth

  193. and the depth

  194. of the grandeur

  195. of God's ontological nature.

  196. The glory of God.

  197. The attributes of God.

  198. The incarnation of Christ.

  199. Knowing and understanding

  200. from Genesis 3, 15 onward

  201. is the work of the covenant of grace

  202. on your behalf.

  203. Knowing God

  204. and His redemptive covenant

  205. will do more for impacting

  206. how you live in this world

  207. than anything else.

  208. And that is Jesus' significant ministry

  209. to His disciples

  210. really at this critical time

  211. in their lives.

  212. It is as if He's taking them

  213. by the hand in these chapters

  214. and saying,

  215. let me take you

  216. and explore with you

  217. the depths of the triunity of God.

  218. Now these opening words

  219. of John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  220. as you know

  221. have brought untold comfort

  222. and help to Christians

  223. throughout the ages

  224. especially Christians

  225. going through hard

  226. and distressing times.

  227. Actually,

  228. the Puritan John Owen

  229. says this about verse 1.

  230. He says,

  231. quote,

  232. no other verse

  233. has helped me more

  234. to understand

  235. that a sense of God's presence

  236. and love

  237. is sufficient

  238. to rebuke all anxiety

  239. and fears

  240. and to calm the troubles

  241. and to give me

  242. in the midst of turmoil

  243. a solid consolation

  244. and joy.

  245. And so Jesus' disciples

  246. are troubled.

  247. And Jesus is going

  248. to give them a remedy

  249. for a troubled heart

  250. as well as ours.

  251. He's going to tell them

  252. that they have

  253. a prescribed proportion

  254. given to them.

  255. And what is true for them

  256. is true for all believers

  257. today.

  258. And we're going to note

  259. three things

  260. as we consider together

  261. this singular verse

  262. as our focus

  263. is upon this portion

  264. of the upper room.

  265. The words of our Lord

  266. Jesus Christ

  267. to His weary saints.

  268. And the first

  269. is the sovereign appointment

  270. of sorrows

  271. in the saints.

  272. And the second

  273. we will go to the solemn

  274. command of Christ

  275. towards struggling saints.

  276. And then third

  277. we will strengthen

  278. our gaze

  279. toward the triune God

  280. for you the saint.

  281. So we see first

  282. the sovereign appointment

  283. of sorrows

  284. in the saints.

  285. Look at verse 1

  286. with me beloved.

  287. Do not let your heart

  288. be troubled.

  289. Believe in God

  290. and believe also

  291. in me.

  292. And let us remind ourselves

  293. that we need to be careful

  294. with a passage

  295. like this

  296. because it's just

  297. this kind of passage

  298. that we're so familiar with.

  299. Often spoken at funerals

  300. especially verses 2 and 3.

  301. And rightly so

  302. but often with familiar passages

  303. we can read over them

  304. carelessly.

  305. And in the type of passage

  306. that really requires

  307. for us to place

  308. our tent here

  309. and to really ask ourselves

  310. what is Christ

  311. commanding us

  312. to do?

  313. What is He supplying

  314. to obey the command?

  315. I mean Christ

  316. not only commands us

  317. to obey

  318. but He also gives us

  319. all the things necessary

  320. to be obedient.

  321. And yet before we can

  322. understand Christ's command

  323. we must

  324. understand

  325. our condition.

  326. There is the certainty

  327. of trouble

  328. and it is sovereignly

  329. appointed

  330. for the saints.

  331. Verse 1 says

  332. do not let your heart

  333. be troubled.

  334. And the world

  335. in which we

  336. are called

  337. as Christians

  338. is not a

  339. sanctuary of ease

  340. but it is full of

  341. tribulation.

  342. Isn't it beloved?

  343. I mean Scripture

  344. has always reminded us

  345. of this.

  346. Job 14 verse 1

    Job 14:1

  347. man who is born

  348. of woman

  349. is short lived

  350. and full of turmoil.

  351. Job 5 verse 7

    Job 5:7

  352. for a man

  353. is born for trouble

  354. as sparks fly upward.

  355. I mean the fall

  356. has left

  357. no corner

  358. of our life

  359. untouched.

  360. And therefore

  361. trouble meets us

  362. from every side

  363. and every angle.

  364. I mean let us

  365. recognize this.

  366. And not be blind

  367. to the reality

  368. of a fallen world.

  369. The fallen condition

  370. of men.

  371. I mean the weight

  372. within our homes.

  373. There are

  374. maritable troubles.

  375. I mean the closeness

  376. of earthly bonds

  377. often feel strained

  378. because sin

  379. so still

  380. clings

  381. closely to us.

  382. Raising our children

  383. in the Lord

  384. comes with

  385. tribulent times.

  386. We have trouble

  387. with sin

  388. within our homes

  389. and patient

  390. pride,

  391. harsh words,

  392. cold affections.

  393. Sanctification

  394. is real

  395. but it's not yet

  396. complete

  397. and so we struggle.

  398. Even Paul cried

  399. for the good

  400. that I want

  401. I do not do.

  402. Romans 7

  403. 19

  404. so the Christian

  405. home is not

  406. exempt from

  407. spiritual warfare.

  408. Indeed

  409. it's a

  410. primary ground.

  411. And then we have

  412. the war within.

  413. We have the

  414. daily trouble

  415. of bringing

  416. our own sins

  417. under submission

  418. to Christ.

  419. Put death

  420. therefore what is

  421. earthly in you

  422. Paul says

  423. to the Colossians.

  424. So mortification

  425. is not an easy

  426. work.

  427. It's a continual

  428. work of the saint.

  429. I mean the Puritans

  430. spoke of it as a

  431. lifelong combat.

  432. The flesh

  433. resistant.

  434. The old man

  435. lingers.

  436. And though sin's

  437. dominion is broken

  438. as Romans 6

  439. 14 tells us

  440. its presence

  441. remains

  442. therefore

  443. we groan

  444. wretched man

  445. that I am

  446. who will set

  447. me free.

  448. We also carry

  449. the burden

  450. as I know

  451. many of you

  452. do

  453. of non-believing

  454. family members.

  455. Those who seem

  456. indifferent to

  457. eternity.

  458. Those who ignore

  459. the warnings

  460. of the

  461. Scripture.

  462. Those who ignore

  463. what should wake

  464. them up from

  465. their slumber.

  466. That it is

  467. appointed for man

  468. to die once

  469. and then comes

  470. the judgment.

  471. And they

  472. appeared untroubled

  473. by these words.

  474. And yet they

  475. stand on the

  476. brink of

  477. everlasting ruin.

  478. And for them

  479. there is little

  480. concern.

  481. For us

  482. there is much

  483. anguish.

  484. I mean Paul

  485. knew this sorrow.

  486. I have great

  487. sorrow and

  488. unceasing grief

  489. in my heart

  490. as Romans 9

    Romans 9:2

  491. verse 2 says.

  492. We also

  493. endure betrayal

  494. by those

  495. close to us.

  496. Those we have

  497. walked in

  498. ministry with.

  499. Shared

  500. fellowship with.

  501. Scriptures

  502. prepare us

  503. for this.

  504. A man's

  505. enemies will

  506. be the members

  507. of his

  508. household.

  509. Matthew 10

    Matthew 10:36

  510. verse 36.

  511. David

  512. laminated

  513. it is you

  514. a man

  515. my equal

  516. my companion

  517. and my

  518. familiar

  519. friend.

  520. Psalms 55

    Psalms 55:13

  521. verse 13.

  522. Even our

  523. Lord was

  524. betrayed with

  525. a kiss.

  526. Then we

  527. have those

  528. who walk

  529. with us

  530. for a little

  531. while in

  532. the church

  533. only to

  534. find out

  535. all of our

  536. efforts,

  537. time,

  538. and ministry

  539. although not

  540. in vain

  541. does have

  542. pain and

  543. troubles and

  544. trials attached

  545. to it.

  546. As the

  547. moss, a

  548. close

  549. companion of

  550. Paul,

  551. abandoned the

  552. truth for he

  553. was in love

  554. with the

  555. present world.

  556. There are

  557. also those

  558. times that

  559. the ministry

  560. especially for

  561. the leaders

  562. where we are

  563. so troubled

  564. that it's

  565. likened to

  566. death.

  567. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1:8

  568. 1 verse 8

  569. For we do

  570. not want you

  571. to be unaware

  572. brethren of

  573. our affliction,

  574. our troubles

  575. which came to

  576. us in Asia

  577. that we were

  578. burdened

  579. excessively

  580. beyond our

  581. strength so

  582. that we

  583. despaired even

  584. of life.

  585. And then we

  586. just have the

  587. providential

  588. troubles,

  589. don't we?

  590. The pressures

  591. of daily

  592. life,

  593. the ordinary

  594. pressures,

  595. the strain

  596. of schedules,

  597. responsibilities,

  598. the relentless

  599. demands of

  600. daily tasks

  601. as Martha

  602. was distracted

  603. with all of

  604. her preparations.

  605. We also

  606. face the

  607. trouble of

  608. sin's

  609. consequences

  610. catching up

  611. with us.

  612. Though

  613. forgiven

  614. consequences

  615. often remain,

  616. David was

  617. pardoned as

  618. 2 Samuel 12

    2 Samuel 12:13

  619. verse 13

  620. told us,

  621. yet the

  622. sword did

  623. not depart

  624. from his

  625. house.

  626. Grace

  627. removes

  628. eternal

  629. condemnation,

  630. but not

  631. always temporary

  632. repercussions.

  633. Then we

  634. have the

  635. hostile

  636. trouble,

  637. the world

  638. that is in

  639. opposition to

  640. the very

  641. gospel that

  642. you believe

  643. in.

  644. Enemies

  645. at every

  646. territory.

  647. And we

  648. have the

  649. task of

  650. proclaiming

  651. the message

  652. that offends

  653. the natural

  654. man and all

  655. of his

  656. cardinal

  657. desires.

  658. Whether it

  659. be the

  660. homosexuals

  661. or abortion

  662. or the

  663. misrepresentation

  664. of Christ's

  665. name with

  666. all the

  667. false

  668. gospels

  669. that use

  670. Christ's

  671. name to

  672. gain glory,

  673. wealth,

  674. or reputation.

  675. We have

  676. all of those

  677. troubles,

  678. all of those

  679. tribulations.

  680. sins.

  681. And then we

  682. have cults

  683. claiming and

  684. professing to

  685. know our

  686. Savior, yet

  687. deny His

  688. deity.

  689. I mean, the

  690. spirit of our

  691. age resists the

  692. truth of

  693. Christ, and

  694. therefore they

  695. will resist

  696. His people.

  697. Domestic

  698. hatred surrounds

  699. the true

  700. church of the

  701. Lord.

  702. If the world

  703. hates you,

  704. you know that

  705. it has hated

  706. me before it

  707. hated you.

  708. John 15

    John 15:18

  709. verse 18.

  710. Paul testified

  711. afflicted in

  712. every way, but

  713. not crushed.

  714. So troubles

  715. from within,

  716. troubles from

  717. without,

  718. troubles from

  719. beneath in

  720. temptation,

  721. from every

  722. side and

  723. every angle.

  724. And the

  725. Word of God

  726. warns us of

  727. the troubles

  728. of this

  729. world.

  730. Christ is

  731. going to warn

  732. them again

  733. even.

  734. In the

  735. upper room

  736. discourse in

  737. chapter 16,

  738. he says this

  739. in verse 33,

  740. These things I

  741. have spoken to

  742. you, so that

  743. in me you may

  744. have peace, but

  745. in the world you

  746. have tribulation.

  747. But take

  748. courage.

  749. I have

  750. overcome the

  751. world.

  752. And so the

  753. disposition of

  754. the heart of

  755. the disciple this

  756. morning, or the

  757. heart of anyone

  758. listening to the

  759. words of Christ

  760. that is in

  761. Christ, at this

  762. moment in the

  763. upper room, is a

  764. heart full of

  765. trouble.

  766. The Christian

  767. life is a hard

  768. pressing road if

  769. you haven't

  770. noticed.

  771. Our Lord says

  772. in Luke 10

    Luke 10:3

  773. verse 3,

  774. Go behold, I

  775. send you out as

  776. lambs in the

  777. midst of wolves.

  778. Paul encourages

  779. the church during

  780. persecution after

  781. being stoned in

  782. Antioch and then

  783. returning to

  784. Antioch.

  785. He records this in

  786. Acts 14 verse 22,

    Acts 14:22

  787. strengthening the

  788. souls of the

  789. disciples, encouraging

  790. them to continue in

  791. the faith, saying

  792. through many

  793. tribulations you

  794. must enter the

  795. kingdom of God.

  796. I mean, consider

  797. how Paul strengthened

  798. them.

  799. He strengthened

  800. them not by

  801. promising ease, but

  802. by preparing them

  803. for endurance.

  804. He did not say

  805. tribulations may

  806. come, did he,

  807. beloved?

  808. No, what does he

  809. say?

  810. He said tribulations

  811. must come.

  812. We will enter

  813. through them.

  814. That word must

  815. speaks of divine

  816. necessity.

  817. And so it's not

  818. accidental.

  819. It is ordained.

  820. The path to the

  821. kingdom is appointed

  822. by God himself

  823. through his

  824. sovereign means.

  825. And so where do

  826. we get the idea

  827. that we are supposed

  828. to have an easy

  829. life in this

  830. fallen world?

  831. I mean, consider

  832. this, beloved, if

  833. the Father did not

  834. spare his own

  835. son, how shall

  836. we be spared

  837. from troubles?

  838. Right?

  839. He who did not

  840. spare his own

  841. son, but delivered

  842. him over for

  843. us all.

  844. I mean, mark the

  845. weight of that

  846. phrase, he did

  847. not spare.

  848. The beloved, the

  849. eternal son in whom

  850. the Father was well

  851. pleased, as Matthew

    Matthew 3:17

  852. 3 verse 17 says,

  853. was not shielded

  854. from suffering.

  855. He was appointed

  856. to it.

  857. Isaiah foresaw it.

  858. It pleased the Lord

  859. to crush him, that he

  860. was put to grief.

  861. And so the cross was

  862. not accidental.

  863. It was ordained.

  864. The spotless lamb

  865. bore wrath, shame,

  866. rejection, and death

  867. for us.

  868. If ever there was one

  869. who might seem

  870. deserving of exemption,

  871. it was Christ.

  872. And yet he learned

  873. obedience through what

  874. he suffered.

  875. And shall you, his

  876. servant, expect a

  877. softer path than the

  878. master?

  879. In John 15, the

  880. word of God reads

  881. there, a disciple is

  882. not above his

  883. teacher.

  884. If they persecuted

  885. me, they will also

  886. persecute you.

  887. Actually, beloved, the

  888. constant counsel of

  889. Scripture is quite the

  890. opposite of the

  891. modern evangelical

  892. churches teaching on

  893. the life of a

  894. Christian.

  895. For the Scripture

  896. teaches us God

  897. leaves his church in

  898. a tribulent world to

  899. show his amazing

  900. sovereign power.

  901. The Scripture

  902. nowhere promises

  903. exempt from sorrow.

  904. Rather, it prepares

  905. all believers for it

  906. by those divinely

  907. appointed means of

  908. grace.

  909. For even Paul says

  910. later, in 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3:12

  911. 3, verse 12,

  912. indeed, all who

  913. desire to live

  914. godly in Christ

  915. Jesus will be

  916. persecuted.

  917. So God has one

  918. son without sin,

  919. but he never has a

  920. son without trials.

  921. If the Father

  922. loved you enough

  923. not to spare

  924. his own son for

  925. your redemption,

  926. he loves you

  927. enough not to

  928. spare you and I

  929. from what will

  930. conform you to

  931. his son.

  932. For this is the

  933. purpose we are

  934. saved.

  935. And even

  936. attaching to his

  937. covenant of

  938. redemption,

  939. Romans 8,

    Romans 8:29

  940. verse 29 says,

  941. for those in

  942. whom he foreknew,

  943. he also predestined

  944. become conformed to

  945. the image of his

  946. son.

  947. So there are

  948. sorrows.

  949. The reality of your

  950. life as a Christian

  951. will be one of

  952. full of trials and

  953. tribulations and

  954. troubles that arise

  955. from every side of

  956. us.

  957. From a fallen

  958. creation,

  959. sickness,

  960. frailty,

  961. death.

  962. As Romans 8,

    Romans 8:22

  963. verse 22 says,

  964. for we know that

  965. the whole creation

  966. groans and

  967. suffers the pain of

  968. childbirth together

  969. until now.

  970. And not only this,

  971. but also we

  972. ourselves having the

  973. first fruits of the

  974. Spirit, even we

  975. ourselves groan

  976. within ourselves,

  977. waiting eagerly for

  978. our adoption as

  979. sons, the

  980. redemption of our

  981. body.

  982. And even Peter

  983. addresses this in

  984. 1 Peter 4,

    1 Peter 4:4

  985. verse 4.

  986. The Word of God

  987. reads there,

  988. in all this they

  989. are surprised that

  990. you do not run

  991. with them in the

  992. same access of

  993. indulgence and they

  994. malign you for it.

  995. And so this world

  996. is full of troubles,

  997. but it's sovereignly

  998. ordained by God.

  999. And so for the

  1000. Christian, for the

  1001. child of God, you're

  1002. not promised that

  1003. you'll be freed from

  1004. hard times.

  1005. Quite the opposite.

  1006. Christ has explained

1007. to us, you will have

  1008. a hard time,

  1009. tribulations.

1010. And in the midst of

  1011. these, the Christian

  1012. heart can be

  1013. troubled.

  1014. And this is why

  1015. Jesus addresses the

  1016. saints'

  1017. tribulance.

  1018. Hearts here.

  1019. And He gives

  1020. them a solemn

  1021. command in the

  1022. midst of their

  1023. struggles.

  1024. He gives them a

  1025. solemn command of

  1026. Christ toward these

  1027. struggling saints.

  1028. I mean, look back

  1029. at verse 1.

  1030. Do not let your

  1031. heart be troubled.

  1032. I mean, make no

  1033. mistake, beloved,

  1034. this is a command.

  1035. The command of

  1036. Christ is clear.

  1037. What is Christ

  1038. commanding us?

  1039. What is Christ

  1040. commanding the

  1041. disciples in this

  1042. hour of hardship?

  1043. Do not let your

  1044. heart be troubled.

1045. And the word that is

  1046. used here for

  1047. trouble is the same

  1048. exact word that He

  1049. used in John

    John 12:27

  1050. chapter 12,

  1051. verse 27 of the

  1052. Lord Himself.

  1053. Now my soul has

  1054. become troubled.

  1055. And sometimes the

  1056. English translation,

  1057. of course, doesn't do

  1058. justice to the actual

  1059. term that's being used

  1060. in the Greek.

  1061. The word here for

  1062. trouble is terresto.

  1063. It means agitated.

  1064. It means to be

  1065. stirred up.

  1066. The same word,

  1067. for instance,

  1068. that was used to

  1069. describe what the

  1070. angel did to the

1071. water at the pool of

  1072. Bethesda.

1073. And so if you turn

  1074. back to John 5,

  1075. we get a word

  1076. picture of it.

  1077. In John chapter 5,

    John 5:7

  1078. verse 7, when Christ

  1079. is about to minister

  1080. grace to that lame

  1081. man by the pool,

  1082. it says,

  1083. The sick man

  1084. answered him,

  1085. Sir, I have no

1086. man to put me into

  1087. the pool when the

  1088. water is stirred up.

  1089. And so the Lord

  1090. uses a picture there.

  1091. And this is so

  1092. helpful.

  1093. In other words,

  1094. the soul, the human

  1095. soul, according to

  1096. Christ, is pictured

  1097. as water that is

  1098. either calm and

  1099. peaceful and quiet,

  1100. no movement,

  1101. all is at rest,

  1102. or it's stirred up.

  1103. Emotions going back

  1104. and forth like waves

  1105. and tides and

  1106. splashing and

  1107. slothing everywhere.

  1108. It's one of the

  1109. two.

  1110. And he's saying

  1111. that this is the

  1112. case about the

  1113. disciples.

  1114. The one who knows

  1115. their hearts, as

  1116. John 2 tells us.

  1117. The one who knows

  1118. every trouble of

  1119. their soul.

  1120. He knows every

  1121. thought of their

  1122. mind.

  1123. And so their

  1124. hearts are stirred

  1125. up to the shocking

  1126. words about his

  1127. death and betrayal.

  1128. And so when you

  1129. think of this word

  1130. trouble, when you're

  1131. looking at this

  1132. word, think of the

  1133. raging waves of the

  1134. sea in the midst

  1135. of a particular

  1136. violent storm.

1137. And then you have a

  1138. good idea of what

  1139. is meant by

  1140. troubled.

  1141. You have a good

  1142. idea of what's

  1143. going on in their

  1144. hearts.

  1145. And so there's

  1146. confusion, there's

  1147. bewilderment.

  1148. If nothing else, we

  1149. can learn from this

  1150. is that genuine

  1151. faith is often

  1152. punctuated then with

  1153. these troubles,

  1154. punctuated with the

  1155. times of distress.

  1156. Now when you begin

  1157. to look everywhere

1158. else in the word of

1159. God, it gives you a

  1160. little handle on what

  1161. this word also means.

  1162. In Acts chapter 12

    Acts 12:18

  1163. verse 18, it says

  1164. this, the word of

  1165. God reads, now when

  1166. day came, there was

  1167. no small disturbance

  1168. among the soldiers as

  1169. to what could have

  1170. become of Peter.

  1171. And so they were

  1172. disturbed by the

  1173. present circumstances.

  1174. Acts 15 verse 24

    Acts 15:24

  1175. uses the same word,

  1176. since we have heard

  1177. that some of our

  1178. number to whom we

  1179. gave no instruction

  1180. have disturbed you

  1181. with their words

  1182. unsettling your

  1183. souls.

1184. And so it could be

  1185. false doctrine that

  1186. stirs up a believer.

  1187. And disturbs him,

  1188. shaking his

  1189. assurance everywhere.

  1190. Paul uses the same

  1191. thing in Galatia.

  1192. Those who are trying

  1193. to disturb you,

  1194. trying to distort the

  1195. gospel in Galatians

  1196. 1.7, only there are

  1197. those, some who are

  1198. disturbing you and

  1199. want to distort the

  1200. gospel of Christ.

  1201. And so it was

  1202. unsettling for the

  1203. church.

  1204. It was unsettling for

  1205. Paul.

  1206. In John 11 verse

    John 11:33

  1207. 33, it's used of

  1208. wakes and funerals

  1209. like Christ comes

  1210. to Lazarus' tomb

  1211. and he was deeply

  1212. moved in spirit and

  1213. trouble.

  1214. Peter uses it in

  1215. 1 Peter 3 verse 14

    1 Peter 3:14

  1216. and do not fear

  1217. their intimidation,

  1218. do not be troubled.

  1219. And so everywhere

  1220. we see this.

  1221. And so here in

1222. John 14 he uses it

  1223. twice.

  1224. And in verse 1

  1225. and verse 27 later

  1226. on, peace I leave

  1227. with you.

1228. My peace I give to

  1229. you.

  1230. Not as the world

1231. gives to you, do I

  1232. give to you.

  1233. Do not let your

  1234. heart be troubled.

  1235. Nor let it be

  1236. fearful.

  1237. So it's described

1238. in the same way in

  1239. John 13 verse 21

    John 13:21

  1240. concerning the

  1241. betrayal of a

  1242. close friend.

  1243. Where it says,

  1244. when Jesus had said

  1245. this, he became

  1246. troubled in spirit.

1247. So we are in this

  1248. immediate context.

  1249. And yet Jesus is

  1250. commanding his

  1251. covenant children,

  1252. don't be troubled.

  1253. There's something

  1254. else to notice here

  1255. too.

1256. It's in that, in the

  1257. tense of this word

  1258. troubled, the verb is

  1259. a continual tense.

  1260. So it carries this

  1261. meaning, let not your

  1262. heart continue to be

  1263. troubled.

  1264. And that's important

  1265. because Jesus is not

  1266. saying don't ever be

  1267. troubled.

  1268. Because the trouble you

  1269. are experiencing can be

  1270. genuine concern.

  1271. Right?

  1272. Paul was genuinely

  1273. concerned for the

  1274. churches.

  1275. 2 Corinthians 11

    2 Corinthians 11:28

  1276. verse 28, apart from

  1277. such external things,

  1278. there's a daily

  1279. pressure on me of

  1280. concern for all the

  1281. churches.

  1282. Galatians 4 verse 19,

    Galatians 4:19

  1283. my children with whom

1284. I am again in labor

  1285. until Christ is formed

  1286. in you.

1287. So he's not saying you

  1288. need to quit being

  1289. troubled or that genuine

  1290. Christians don't have a

  1291. troubled heart.

  1292. He's not saying that.

  1293. He's saying don't allow

1294. your heart to continue to

  1295. be troubled.

  1296. Because you might ask,

1297. how does Jesus command me

  1298. not to be troubled?

1299. But yet I know these

  1300. verses say he was

  1301. troubled.

1302. And if it's not a sin for

  1303. Christ to be troubled,

1304. or Paul to be concerned

1305. about how it could possibly

1306. be a sin for me and my

  1307. heart to be troubled.

1308. You have trouble in this

  1309. world and there are

  1310. reasons, as we've noted,

  1311. to be troubled.

1312. But Jesus is saying don't

  1313. continue to have a

  1314. troubled heart.

  1315. Don't dwell in your

  1316. troubles.

1317. Since the imperative mood is

  1318. addressing the emotional

1319. state, it's best to take this

  1320. command in this sense

  1321. concerning the disciples.

  1322. Be self-controlled.

1323. It's not good for us to let

1324. our feelings rule our minds

  1325. and our hearts.

1326. To let our feelings of fear

  1327. and anxiety or trouble

1328. wash us again and again

  1329. without addressing them.

1330. It's not good for the

1331. Christian to live in the

  1332. state of trouble.

  1333. I mean, sinless sorrow

  1334. flows from holy

  1335. affection, godly concerns

  1336. with godly trust, yet

  1337. sinful disorder flows

  1338. from unbelief or

  1339. neglect of gospel

  1340. promises.

  1341. And so the big

  1342. perspective in all of

  1343. this, and that is

  1344. precisely because Jesus

  1345. was troubled with all

  1346. the events of his

  1347. crucifixion, to endure

  1348. that it's now possible

1349. for us not to be

  1350. troubled.

1351. To look to him and

1352. praise the Lord for that.

1353. For his merit of trouble

  1354. is our righteousness, and

1355. now we can have peace.

1356. So Jesus is telling his

  1357. disciples to not be

  1358. troubled.

  1359. And the wonderful thing

  1360. about our Lord Jesus

1361. Christ is that he knows

  1362. our frame.

  1363. Not by the observation

  1364. of omniscience only,

  1365. but by his common

  1366. humanity with us.

1367. That he is bone of our

1368. bone and flesh of our

  1369. flesh.

  1370. That by his common

  1371. humanity with us,

  1372. he knows our troubles.

1373. He said it over and

1374. over in the gospel to

  1375. prepare us for this

  1376. moment in verse 1,

  1377. my soul is troubled.

1378. So he knows what heart

  1379. trouble is because he

  1380. has experienced sinless

  1381. heart trouble.

1382. But our heart trouble is

  1383. at times sinful, isn't

  1384. it?

  1385. When our troubling

  1386. concerns turn into

  1387. continuous anxious worry,

  1388. it becomes sinful.

  1389. His wasn't, right?

  1390. 1 Peter 2 verse 3

    1 Peter 2:3

  1391. speaks of the trouble

1392. of the Lord, and it

  1393. says, while being

  1394. reviled, he did not

  1395. what?

  1396. Revile in return.

  1397. While suffering, he

  1398. uttered no threats, but

  1399. kept entrusting himself

  1400. to him who judges

  1401. righteously.

1402. And Peter says we will

  1403. share in this suffering.

  1404. 1 Peter 4 verse 12,

    1 Peter 4:12

  1405. Beloved, do not be

  1406. surprised at the fire

  1407. ordeal among you,

  1408. which comes upon you

  1409. for your testing, as

  1410. though some strange

  1411. thing were happening

1412. to you, but to the

  1413. degree that you share

  1414. the suffering of Christ,

  1415. keep on rejoicing, so

  1416. that also at the

  1417. revelation of his

  1418. glory, you may rejoice

  1419. with exultation.

  1420. So he's not oblivious

  1421. to their need.

  1422. That's a great thing to

  1423. know, isn't it, beloved?

1424. When you come to cast

  1425. yourself upon the Lord,

  1426. he's never saying, I

  1427. didn't realize things

  1428. were that bad.

  1429. Neither does Jesus

  1430. dismiss the trouble of

  1431. a fallen world.

  1432. He doesn't say things

1433. here on earth will get

  1434. better either.

  1435. He doesn't give them

1436. some sort of false hope

  1437. that everything on earth

1438. is going to get better

  1439. for them.

  1440. No, trouble will increase

  1441. for the believer, as

1442. Paul said in 2 Timothy

    2 Timothy 3:1

  1443. 3 verse 1.

1444. But realize this, that in

  1445. the last days, difficult

  1446. times will come.

1447. And then verse 13, but

  1448. evil men and imposters

  1449. will proceed from bad

  1450. to worse, deceiving and

  1451. being deceived.

  1452. So he doesn't minimize

  1453. their troubles.

1454. He said right here what

  1455. we have.

1456. So we have a prescribed

  1457. portion that he sets

  1458. before them.

  1459. What does he do?

1460. What does our Lord do?

1461. In the midst of their

1462. trouble, do not let your

  1463. heart be troubled.

1464. Well, our Lord sets their

  1465. gaze.

  1466. He redirects their gaze.

  1467. He strengthens the troubled

1468. saints by fixing their eyes

  1469. upon the triune God.

1470. Let not your heart be

1471. troubled, but look at this.

  1472. Look at the strengthening

1473. gaze toward that triune God

1474. where all of our eyes

  1475. need to be.

1476. Verse 1, believe in God

  1477. and believe also in

  1478. me.

  1479. And yes, there's a

  1480. realism about troubles.

  1481. But he directs their

  1482. gaze from the realism

1483. of their woes to the

  1484. realism that is found

  1485. in the triune God.

  1486. And we ask ourselves,

1487. why do we get stirred up

  1488. or troubled?

1489. What is when we think our

1490. resources are not able to

  1491. meet the need?

  1492. Whether that need be

  1493. spiritual, physical,

  1494. emotional, whatever the

  1495. need is.

1496. And yet there's nothing in

  1497. the text about positive

  1498. thinking.

  1499. This is not some

  1500. philosophical self-help

1501. that our Lord gives to

  1502. His troubled disciples.

1503. This is not a moral

  1504. therapeutic gospel spoken

  1505. from many pulpits today.

  1506. Here's no worldly

  1507. encouragement, no

  1508. cardinal stratagem of

  1509. self-exhortation.

1510. No, the peace of Christ

  1511. gives, that He gives

1512. here is not fragile fruit

  1513. of self-persuasion,

  1514. but the purchased

  1515. possession of His blood

  1516. and righteousness.

  1517. I mean, the world

  1518. traffics in slogans

  1519. and sentiments,

  1520. but Christ bestows

  1521. Himself before you

  1522. this morning.

1523. So nothing in this text

1524. where you say to yourself,

  1525. well, I just hope

  1526. things will get better.

1527. Or let me just think

  1528. for the best.

1529. Or let me just envision

  1530. the best.

  1531. Or just fantasize

  1532. the best outcome.

1533. Or as our world is

  1534. telling our children,

  1535. believe in yourself.

  1536. And this will somehow

  1537. build up your heart

  1538. and give you some

  1539. encouragement.

  1540. I mean, you and I

  1541. have been told

1542. too much in our life

  1543. that we can help

  1544. ourselves if we will

  1545. just try hard enough.

  1546. That's nonsense.

  1547. This is no motivational

  1548. pep talk

  1549. that we hear blaring

1550. from the mouth of Christ.

  1551. No, not at all.

1552. No, to counter the trouble,

  1553. the Lord answers

  1554. by redirecting

  1555. our gaze upon

  1556. the triune God.

1557. And He uses the word

  1558. pisto twice,

  1559. believe, believe.

  1560. And by believe,

  1561. the Scripture means

  1562. relational trust.

  1563. A trust that's founded

  1564. upon being in a

  1565. genuine relationship

  1566. with the Lord.

  1567. God.

  1568. This is what we

  1569. in the Reformation

  1570. tradition call

  1571. sola fidei.

  1572. Faith alone.

  1573. The rally

  1574. of the Reformation.

1575. That faith is a gift

  1576. according to Ephesians 2.8.

  1577. That God gives

  1578. allowing us to respond

  1579. with our whole being,

  1580. our whole self

  1581. to God.

  1582. That when the believer

  1583. is faced

  1584. with constant sorrows,

  1585. we must be careful

1586. to be in the word

  1587. of God

  1588. so frequently

  1589. that the great facts

  1590. about God

  1591. and the great facts

  1592. about the work

  1593. of redemption

  1594. and the great facts

  1595. about union in Christ,

  1596. they grip us.

  1597. And I believe them

1598. and I rely upon them

  1599. and I'm comforted

  1600. by them.

  1601. So again,

  1602. we're not talking

  1603. about general optimism

  1604. here.

  1605. People just say,

  1606. I just believe

  1607. things have got

  1608. to get better.

  1609. No.

  1610. We turn our gaze

  1611. into penance

  1612. on knowing God.

1613. The object of our trust

  1614. that we know Him.

  1615. And we must know

  1616. His character.

  1617. And that means

  1618. we must know

  1619. what He says

  1620. about Himself

  1621. in the one place

  1622. that He reveals

  1623. His character to us

  1624. and that's Scripture.

  1625. That all His attributes,

1626. they are laid out there

  1627. beautifully for us,

  1628. so lovingly for us.

1629. And as we know them,

  1630. we know Him.

  1631. Because Jesus says this

1632. in His high priestly prayer

  1633. in John 17,

    John 17:3

  1634. verse 3,

  1635. the Word of God

  1636. reads there,

  1637. this is eternal life

1638. that they may know you,

  1639. know you,

  1640. the only true God

  1641. in Jesus Christ

  1642. whom you have sent.

  1643. You see,

  1644. the deeper you go,

  1645. the deeper you go

  1646. into the study

1647. of the doctrine of God

  1648. and His ways

1649. and the more you meditate

  1650. on His attributes

  1651. and His ways,

  1652. then the deeper

  1653. your trust can be.

  1654. And therefore,

  1655. the less troubled

  1656. your heart will be.

  1657. Something else

  1658. about this word believe,

  1659. it includes the idea

  1660. of being absolutely

  1661. persuaded about something.

  1662. In other words,

  1663. it means to trust,

  1664. it means to place

  1665. your total confidence.

  1666. It means to choose

  1667. completely

  1668. to trust everything

  1669. about your life

  1670. to entrust your well-being

  1671. to the Lord.

  1672. And so he's talking

  1673. about a belief here

  1674. but a certain kind

  1675. of belief.

  1676. Now this can be

  1677. a difficult phrase

  1678. to translate

1679. at the end of verse 1,

  1680. not because the words

  1681. are difficult,

  1682. because they can be

  1683. translated as

  1684. indicative statements.

  1685. You believe God,

1686. you also believe in me.

  1687. Or they can be

  1688. translated as

  1689. imperatives,

  1690. believe in God,

  1691. believe also in me.

  1692. Or they could be

  1693. indicative and imperative,

  1694. you believe in God,

  1695. then also believe

  1696. in me.

  1697. And it shouldn't be

  1698. read as an indicative

  1699. for Jesus is not

  1700. hoping to add belief

  1701. in Him to already

  1702. believing in God,

1703. as if belief in God

  1704. and Jesus

  1705. could ever be separated.

  1706. Which as you know,

  1707. beloved,

1708. and I hope you have

  1709. learned as you have

  1710. read in the Scripture,

1711. that is a foreign thought.

1712. It needs to be read

  1713. as an imperative.

  1714. Believe in God,

  1715. believe also in me.

  1716. So that the meaning

  1717. would be keep believing,

  1718. grow in your faith.

  1719. You've already

  1720. believed in God.

  1721. God has already

  1722. called you unto Himself,

1723. drawn you to the Son.

  1724. So now keep believing,

  1725. keep trusting,

  1726. keep your eyes fixed

  1727. on Christ,

  1728. not on the things

  1729. of the earth.

  1730. So He gives them

  1731. really two root ways,

  1732. a remedy,

  1733. you could say,

  1734. for their troubled hearts.

  1735. And He says,

  1736. trust in the Father,

  1737. believe in God.

  1738. Now notice that Jesus

  1739. does not direct them

  1740. to look within themselves

1741. to see if they're up

  1742. to the challenge.

  1743. Jesus does say,

  1744. well,

1745. how much faith do you have

  1746. and how much faith

  1747. can you muster up?

  1748. No,

  1749. Jesus recognizes

  1750. none of those things

  1751. typical of modern

  1752. American religion

  1753. that is utterly

  1754. self-centered

  1755. and entirely subjective.

1756. It is faith in the Lord

1757. that is set before us.

  1758. He's saying,

  1759. continue to place

  1760. your confidence,

  1761. not into the troubles

  1762. around you,

  1763. not into the fluctuations

  1764. that are unsettling,

  1765. but place your confidence

  1766. this morning

  1767. and your trust

  1768. in God,

  1769. in His wisdom,

  1770. in His goodness,

  1771. in His power,

  1772. in His love,

  1773. in His unchanging grace.

  1774. So take for example,

  1775. Abraham in Romans 4,

    Romans 4:19

  1776. verse 19.

  1777. We read this

  1778. about Abraham's faith,

  1779. which is what he's

  1780. telling them to do,

  1781. to have faith,

  1782. to believe in Him.

  1783. It says,

  1784. without becoming weak

  1785. in faith,

  1786. he contemplated

  1787. his own body,

1788. now as good as dead,

  1789. since he was about

  1790. a hundred years old

  1791. and the deadness

  1792. of Sarah's womb.

  1793. And so he didn't

  1794. escape the reality,

  1795. did he?

  1796. Abraham didn't.

  1797. He knew it.

  1798. He saw it.

1799. It says in that text

  1800. in Romans 4, 19

  1801. that he contemplated it.

  1802. He thought of it.

  1803. But he saw it

  1804. in relationship to what?

  1805. Verse 20,

  1806. yet with respect

1807. to the promise of God.

  1808. Did you hear that?

  1809. Now respect

1810. to the promise of God.

  1811. So let me turn

  1812. your attention

1813. to the promise of God,

1814. to the character of God.

  1815. He did not waver

  1816. in unbelief,

  1817. but grew in faith,

  1818. giving glory to God

  1819. and being fully assured

  1820. that what God

  1821. had promised,

  1822. He was able

  1823. to perform.

  1824. Look upon Him

  1825. who is worthy

  1826. of glory

  1827. and always good,

  1828. who Himself is love

  1829. and who is all-powerful.

  1830. Fix your gaze here

  1831. upon the covenant-keeping God.

  1832. Believe in God.

1833. And this is the remedy

  1834. for the troubled disciples

  1835. in this moment.

  1836. Believe in God.

  1837. Christ says,

1838. continue to believe in God.

  1839. You know Him.

  1840. Christ doesn't bring

  1841. anything new to them.

  1842. You know this God.

  1843. You, 11,

1844. have already trusted in Him.

1845. And so Christ is really saying,

  1846. consider your God.

  1847. Let not your hearts

  1848. be troubled.

  1849. Why?

  1850. Because you consider

  1851. your God

  1852. in the midst

  1853. of those adversities

  1854. and troubles.

  1855. Now proclaim the faith

  1856. that you know Him.

  1857. And so the cure

  1858. for the troubled heart

  1859. is something

  1860. that has not changed

  1861. throughout human history.

  1862. The cure is

  1863. genuine trust

  1864. in the Lord.

  1865. I mean,

1866. let's think of the Old Testament

  1867. for a moment.

  1868. God's people,

  1869. they were frequently

  1870. told to trust

  1871. in the Lord.

  1872. They were expected

  1873. to trust

  1874. in God.

1875. Let me just give you

  1876. a few examples

  1877. this morning.

  1878. Deuteronomy 20,

    Deuteronomy 20:1

  1879. verse 1,

  1880. when you go out

  1881. to battle

  1882. against your enemies

  1883. and see horses

  1884. and chariots

  1885. and people more

  1886. numerous than you,

  1887. do not be afraid

  1888. of them,

1889. for the Lord your God

  1890. who brought you up

1891. from the land of Egypt

  1892. is with you.

  1893. Jeremiah 17,

    Jeremiah 17:7

  1894. verse 7,

  1895. blessed is a man

  1896. who trusts

  1897. in the Lord,

  1898. who trusts

  1899. in the Lord,

  1900. doubly repeated.

  1901. It's the same thing

  1902. that the Psalms

  1903. train us in.

  1904. Psalms 28,

    Psalms 28:7

  1905. verse 7,

1906. the Lord is my strength

  1907. and my shield,

  1908. my heart,

  1909. trust in Him

  1910. and I am helped.

  1911. Psalms 27,

    Psalms 27:1

  1912. verse 1,

1913. the Lord is my light

  1914. and my salvation,

  1915. whom shall I fear?

1916. The Lord is the defense

  1917. of my life,

  1918. whom shall I dread?

  1919. Psalms 42,

    Psalms 42:11

  1920. verse 11,

  1921. it says there

1922. the Word of God reads,

1923. why are you in despair?

  1924. O my soul,

  1925. and why have you

  1926. become disturbed

  1927. within me?

  1928. Hope in God,

  1929. for I shall yet

  1930. praise Him,

  1931. the help of my

  1932. countenance

  1933. and my God.

  1934. And so the gaze

  1935. of the Christian

  1936. is to be fixated

  1937. upon the object

  1938. of faith

  1939. that is found

  1940. in God Himself.

  1941. And so,

  1942. beloved saints,

  1943. these are the words

1944. not only to the leaven,

1945. but to every single believer.

  1946. an exhortation

  1947. which we constantly need

  1948. to be reminded,

  1949. believe in God.

  1950. Believe in God,

  1951. O Christian,

  1952. for your Father

  1953. is possessed

  1954. with infinite power

  1955. and wisdom

  1956. and goodness

  1957. that He knows

1958. what is best for you.

  1959. This is why

  1960. in Luke chapter 12,

    Luke 12:32

  1961. verse 32,

  1962. Jesus says,

  1963. do not be afraid,

  1964. little flock,

  1965. for your Father

  1966. has chosen gladly

1967. to give you the kingdom.

  1968. But fear not,

  1969. beloved,

1970. for it is your Father's

  1971. good pleasure

  1972. to save you,

  1973. to redeem you,

  1974. and to one day

  1975. glorify you.

  1976. So Jesus is constantly

  1977. reminding us,

  1978. believe in God

  1979. and His absolute sovereignty,

  1980. His infinite wisdom,

  1981. His unchanging faithfulness,

  1982. His wondrous love

  1983. for you,

1984. for He will love you

  1985. to the end.

  1986. That is His promise.

  1987. I mean,

  1988. think about how God

  1989. has been described

  1990. for us in Scripture.

1991. And in each of these

  1992. descriptions,

  1993. troubled heart,

1994. you grabbed hold of this.

  1995. And you reckon it

  1996. to be the reality

  1997. and not fantasy.

1998. And you live upon it.

1999. And you not be tossed

  2000. to and fro

  2001. as so many are.

  2002. in Psalms 102,

    Psalms 102:25

  2003. verse 25,

  2004. talks about the

  2005. unalterable

  2006. and timelessness

  2007. of our Lord.

  2008. It says,

  2009. of old you have

  2010. founded the earth

  2011. and the heavens

  2012. are the works

  2013. of your hands.

  2014. Even they will perish,

  2015. but you endure.

  2016. Psalms 103,

    Psalms 103:19

  2017. verse 19,

  2018. the Lord has established

  2019. His thrones

  2020. in the heavens

  2021. and His sovereignty

  2022. rules over all.

2023. It rules over all places,

  2024. all events,

  2025. all circumstances.

  2026. 1 Timothy 6,

    1 Timothy 6:15

  2027. verse 15,

  2028. He who is blessed

  2029. and only sovereign,

  2030. the King of kings

2031. and the Lord of lords.

  2032. Isaiah says

  2033. in chapter 25,

  2034. verse 1,

  2035. O Lord,

  2036. You are my God.

  2037. I will exalt You

2038. and I will give thanks

  2039. to Your name

2040. for You have worked wonders.

  2041. Plans formed long ago

  2042. with me.

  2043. perfect faithfulness.

2044. So we are not alone.

2045. Christ knew of these things

  2046. with His disciples.

2047. He knew of the trouble Himself

  2048. and He trusted

  2049. the Father perfectly.

  2050. That He experienced

  2051. all that man experienced.

  2052. And He tells them

  2053. to fix their eyes

  2054. to trust in God.

2055. But not only does He give them

  2056. that remedy,

  2057. believe in God,

2058. and yet Jesus also goes on

  2059. to say,

  2060. trust in the Son.

  2061. Did you notice that?

  2062. It says,

  2063. believe in God

2064. and believe also in Me.

  2065. In Me.

  2066. It's not necessarily

  2067. the presence of faith

  2068. and it's certainly

  2069. not the feelings

  2070. we have of faithfulness,

  2071. but it's the object

  2072. of faith

  2073. which matters.

  2074. Jesus is pushing Himself

  2075. as it were

  2076. to the forefront

  2077. as the exclusive object

  2078. of their faith

  2079. and of our faith.

2080. But this is Christ alone.

  2081. Standing next to

  2082. faith alone.

2083. That if one is weak

  2084. and the other collapses.

  2085. If one is misunderstood,

  2086. the gospel is obscured.

2087. To say we are justified

  2088. by faith alone

2089. is to say that we are justified

  2090. by Christ alone.

2091. To say we are saved

  2092. by Christ alone

  2093. necessarily means

  2094. we receive Him

  2095. by faith alone.

  2096. These are not

  2097. competing truths.

  2098. They are inseparable beams

2099. of the same gospel light

  2100. and that is what

2101. He is putting before them.

  2102. Come to Me.

  2103. All who are weary

  2104. and burdened

  2105. may come to Christ.

2106. So Christ is the object

  2107. of our faith.

2108. He's the root of it.

  2109. And our sanctification

2110. is in that same root.

  2111. The branch does not

  2112. draw life from itself

  2113. nor does holiness

2114. grow from that native soil.

  2115. No, all grace flows

  2116. from union with Christ.

  2117. The Savior who justifies

  2118. will also sanctify.

  2119. 1 Corinthians 1 verse 30

    1 Corinthians 1:30

  2120. But by His doing

2121. you are in Christ Jesus

  2122. who became to us

  2123. wisdom from God

  2124. and righteousness

  2125. and sanctification

  2126. and redemption

  2127. and yet it's falling

  2128. on these ears

  2129. of the disciples

  2130. and if you've read

  2131. in John 14

  2132. you know they don't

2133. truly grasp all of this

2134. but Christ is building them.

  2135. He's preparing that soil

2136. for them to be strengthened

  2137. to be sanctified.

  2138. I mean consider it

  2139. this morning beloved

  2140. Christ Himself

  2141. is our sanctification.

  2142. So He's claiming

  2143. to not only be

  2144. the object of justification

  2145. but of sanctification

  2146. as well.

  2147. And in claiming this

  2148. here in verse 1

  2149. He's associating Himself

  2150. with God.

  2151. Isn't He?

  2152. He's associating Himself

  2153. with God

2154. as the object of worship.

  2155. I mean this is

  2156. high Christology.

  2157. For Jesus is linking

  2158. Himself with God.

  2159. And for you beloved

  2160. you recognize this

  2161. because to believe

  2162. in God's Word

  2163. is to believe

2164. in the Word made flesh.

  2165. He's saying

2166. I'm the object of faith.

  2167. He's making Himself

  2168. equal with God.

  2169. And this yet again

  2170. as we see everywhere

  2171. in the Scripture

  2172. and especially

2173. in the Gospel of John

  2174. the divinity

  2175. of Christ's glory

  2176. being set before us.

  2177. That He's identifying

  2178. Himself with the Father

2179. just like in John 10

    John 10:30

  2180. verse 30

2181. surely ringing in our ears

  2182. I and the Father

  2183. are one

2184. for He is the true Emmanuel

  2185. who answers within.

  2186. So this is not

  2187. someone foreign

  2188. coming to us

  2189. saying believe in Me.

2190. No this is God Himself.

  2191. And here's our Lord

  2192. beginning to sink

  2193. their mind

  2194. and their hearts

  2195. into the doctrine

  2196. of the Holy Trinity.

  2197. And Paul says

  2198. to the Colossians

  2199. and he says it

  2200. while he's in jail

  2201. Colossians 1 verse 19

    Colossians 1:19

2202. For it was the Father's

  2203. good pleasure

  2204. for all the fullness

  2205. to dwell in Him.

  2206. And in chapter 2 verse 9

2207. he says for in Him

  2208. all the fullness

  2209. of deity dwells

  2210. in bodily form.

  2211. So all the fullness

  2212. of God is packed

  2213. into the human body

  2214. and soul of Christ.

  2215. The second person

  2216. of the triune God

  2217. the Son of God.

  2218. So let's be clear

  2219. then here today

  2220. what Christ is saying.

  2221. We cannot consider God

  2222. without considering Christ.

  2223. We cannot know God

  2224. without knowing Christ.

  2225. We cannot genuinely believe

  2226. and trust in God

  2227. without believing

  2228. in His Son.

  2229. John 5 verse 23

    John 5:23

  2230. the Word of God

  2231. reads there

  2232. so that all

  2233. will honor the Son

  2234. even as they honor

  2235. the Father.

  2236. He who does not

  2237. honor the Father

  2238. who sent Him.

  2239. And so we cannot

  2240. see God

  2241. without first

  2242. seeing His Son

  2243. for they are one.

  2244. And our great mediator

  2245. in His work

  2246. is exactly this

  2247. to bring us

  2248. close to God.

  2249. And we can never

  2250. be close to God

  2251. if we are not

  2252. truly close to Christ.

  2253. So this is primary

  2254. beloved.

  2255. This is preeminent.

  2256. The only right passage

  2257. to peace with God

  2258. and peace of God

  2259. as John 14 verse 6

    John 14:6

  2260. will say

2261. is Jesus said to them

  2262. I am the way

  2263. the truth

  2264. and the life

  2265. and no one comes

  2266. to the Father

  2267. but through Me.

  2268. And so it's through

  2269. Christ alone

  2270. that we can believe

  2271. in God.

  2272. And in this text

  2273. we have that

  2274. proclamation

  2275. so that we would

  2276. set our eyes

  2277. not upon our troubles

  2278. not upon our circumstances

2279. not upon what the world

  2280. throws at us

  2281. but that we may

  2282. continue to look

  2283. towards Christ.

  2284. Christ has invited us

  2285. as His covenant children

  2286. to partake in Him.

2287. And so He says to them

  2288. believe in God

  2289. but believe also

  2290. in Me.

2291. And this is the prescribed

  2292. portion

  2293. for our troubled hearts.

  2294. Christ ever placing

  2295. before you this morning

  2296. His nature.

  2297. who He is.

  2298. But as you look

  2299. at yourself

  2300. and you think

  2301. I'm discouraged

  2302. with perhaps

  2303. the circumstances

  2304. discouraged

  2305. perhaps

  2306. with what I find

  2307. inside my own soul

  2308. when I go looking

  2309. as I rehearse

  2310. my own thoughts

  2311. and as I rehearse

  2312. all that is taking

  2313. place within me.

  2314. And as we examine

  2315. our hearts

  2316. and we find

  2317. remaining corruption

  2318. coldness in prayer

  2319. wondering thoughts

  2320. even this morning

  2321. unbelief

  2322. fear

  2323. and spiritual weakness

  2324. we feel the pressure

  2325. of that indwelling

  2326. sin

  2327. warring

  2328. against the law

  2329. of God

  2330. as Paul

  2331. describes in Romans 7

  2332. we feel the hatred

  2333. of the world

  2334. the accusations

  2335. of Satan

  2336. and the burden

  2337. of present trials

2338. we feel all of that

  2339. and our Lord

  2340. comes to us

  2341. and He interrupts

  2342. everything else

  2343. that's going on

  2344. in our little world

  2345. and He says

  2346. believe in Me

  2347. trust in Me

  2348. continue to believe

2349. continue to be poured out

  2350. for the sake

  2351. of Christ

  2352. and the Trinity

  2353. is precisely

  2354. what we need

  2355. to know God

  2356. is precisely

  2357. what we need

  2358. for every trial

  2359. on this world

  2360. that is why Christ

  2361. gives them that

  2362. in His final hours

  2363. to encourage them

2364. and to display to them

2365. that He will love them

  2366. to the end

  2367. to continue to fix

  2368. and redirect

  2369. their troubled hearts

  2370. into fixing their gaze

  2371. upon Him

  2372. isn't that what Hebrews 12

  2373. 2 has taught us

  2374. fix our eyes

  2375. on Jesus

  2376. gaze upon Him

  2377. beloved

  2378. the author

  2379. and perfecter

  2380. of faith

  2381. who for the joy

  2382. set before Him

  2383. He endured the cross

  2384. despising this shame

  2385. and He sat down

  2386. at the right hand

  2387. of the throne

  2388. of God

  2389. return again

  2390. and again

  2391. to the cross

  2392. return again

  2393. and again

  2394. to the empty tomb

  2395. return again

  2396. and again

  2397. to the throne

  2398. of grace

  2399. and lay your burdens

  2400. there

  2401. confess your sins

  2402. and your troubles

  2403. there

  2404. anchor your hope

  2405. there

  2406. and though the storms

  2407. of life will come

  2408. indeed they will

  2409. you will find

  2410. beneath every wave

  2411. is an everlasting

  2412. grace

  2413. and beneath your weary

  2414. soul

  2415. are the everlasting arms

  2416. of the loving Father

  2417. and the gracious Son

  2418. trust in God

  2419. trust also in Christ

  2420. for in Him

  2421. and Him alone

  2422. your troubled hearts

  2423. finds its place

  2424. of rest

  2425. in the place

  2426. of Christ

  2427. John 14 1

2428. do not let your heart

  2429. be troubled

  2430. believe in God

  2431. and believe also

  2432. in me

2433. let's go to our Lord

  2434. oh Father

  2435. you're so gracious

  2436. oh God

  2437. you're so gracious

  2438. to love us

  2439. to the end

  2440. we creatures

  2441. who know

  2442. who we are

  2443. we know

  2444. how sinful

  2445. we are

  2446. oh God

  2447. we know

  2448. how Lord

  2449. we can

  2450. often try

  2451. to solve

  2452. our own issues

  2453. our own troubles

  2454. ourselves

  2455. by our own

  2456. marriage

  2457. and our own

  2458. works

  2459. God

  2460. but yet

  2461. you come

  2462. you come

  2463. with words

  2464. of life

  2465. you come

  2466. with words

  2467. of comfort

  2468. and encouragement

  2469. but also

  2470. words of rebuking

  2471. and you come

  2472. to us

  2473. in a command

  2474. and you say

  2475. for us

  2476. to trust in you

  2477. to believe

  2478. upon you

  2479. Father

  2480. let us

  2481. do that

  2482. give us

  2483. the strength

  2484. to God

  2485. because we

  2486. cannot do it

  2487. on our own

  2488. we are quite

  2489. helpless

  2490. we pray God

  2491. that you would

  2492. give us

  2493. the strength

  2494. the strength

  2495. to trust you

  2496. the strength

  2497. to get into

  2498. our word

  2499. daily

  2500. the strength

  2501. to pray

  2502. to you

  2503. the strength

  2504. to even

  2505. come before

  2506. the Lord's

  2507. table

  2508. and really

  2509. reflect upon

  2510. what Christ

  2511. has done

  2512. oh Father

  2513. let our hearts

  2514. remember

  2515. what was spoken

  2516. to those

  2517. disciples

  2518. has spoken

  2519. to us

  2520. that we should

  2521. believe in you

  2522. and believe

  2523. in the son

  2524. that you have

  2525. sent

  2526. and let us

  2527. do that

  2528. oh God

  2529. and let us

  2530. not grow weary

  2531. in doing it

  2532. yet let us

  2533. finish this race
