  1. Psalm 119, starting at 25.

  2. The word right above it is left in Hebrew.

  3. ! It's one of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet.

  4. !

  5. Because the whole psalm is an acrostic.

  6. Daleth.

  7. My soul clings to the dust.

  8. Revive me according to your word.

  9. I have declared my ways, and you answered me.

  10. Teach me your statutes.

  11. Make me understand the way of your precepts.

  12. So shall I meditate on your wonderful works.

  13. My soul melts from heaviness.

  14. Strengthen me according to your word.

  15. Remove from me the way of lying, and grant me your law graciously.

  16. I have chosen the way of truth.

  17. Your judgments I have laid before me.

  18. I cling to your testimonies, O Lord.

  19. Do not put me to shame.

  20. I will run the course of your commandments.

  21. For you shall enlarge my heart.

  22. The word of God for the people of God.

  23. Thanks be to God.

  24. Please be seated.

  25. The grass withers, the flower fades,

  26. but the word of the Lord stands forever.

  27. Let's pray.

  28. Let's pray.

  29. Oh, living God, the giver of life,

  30. thank you for breathing out your scriptures,

  31. and thank you for how your Holy Spirit now takes your scriptures,

  32. and the word of God in the hand of the Holy Spirit, so to speak,

  33. is sharper than a two-edged sword.

  34. Lord, we pray, Lord, that your spirit will use your word,

  35. and all that you reveal in your word about who you are,

  36. and about Jesus Christ,

  37. and the good news of salvation for sinners like us,

  38. in God, through Jesus.

  39. That you'll make this so clear today, Lord.

  40. We pray that your word will wash over us, Lord,

  41. like a tide from the most pure ocean,

  42. that you'll cleanse us by your word, Lord.

  43. You'll sanctify us.

  44. You'll prepare our souls for eternity with you.

  45. Lord, for those who are in darkness

  46. and know nothing about your word,

  47. we pray that today you will shine the glory

  48. of who you are on these dear souls,

  49. that they will not be the same,

  50. that they will know you through your word, we ask.

  51. Amen.

  52. Oh, how lovely is the word of the Lord.

  53. Amen.

  54. Oh, how lovely is the word of the Lord.

  55. That's my one message for you today,

  56. but let's walk through this passage one verse at a time

  57. and appreciate it more and more together.

  58. Psalm 119 is anonymous.

  59. It's also the longest chapter in the whole Psalter,

  60. in the whole Bible.

  61. Some possible authors include David

  62. because many of the phrases and the style

  63. is very similar to David's.

  64. Another possibility is Ezra

  65. because he was the priest who taught the people the law.

  66. This would be a very fitting psalm

  67. for them to sing over and over,

  68. remembering this lesson of the precious word of God.

  69. Others have supposed possibly Daniel or Jeremiah.

  70. Both lived in a similar time.

  71. Both were raised up by the Lord and were in exile,

  72. so they're lamenting the loss

  73. and longing to have that worship of God restored,

  74. which comes through in this psalm.

  75. Now, the beautiful thing about God's word

  76. is while we don't need to know

  77. who the human author was

  78. because we have the divine author,

  79. the Holy Spirit,

  80. who breathed out all of Scripture.

  81. And he does this in such a gentle, kind way.

  82. As I mentioned,

  83. Daleth is the Hebrew letter D.

  84. So A, B, C, D.

  85. It's early on in the sequence.

  86. To use our own English spin on that,

  87. the mood or the tone,

  88. the condition of the author,

  89. the human author,

  90. is dire, depressed, and doubting.

  91. Now, the Bible gives us here

  92. one little snapshot, like a case study,

  93. but we can turn to a number of other parts of the Bible

  94. and we're going to hear very different tones,

  95. very different styles.

  96. The beautiful thing about God's word

  97. is that the one Holy Spirit breathed it out

  98. through the pen of over 40 different human authors

  99. on three different continents

  100. in three different languages.

  101. Well, you know Hebrew in the Old Testament,

  102. Greek in the New Testament,

  103. what was the third?

  104. There are portions, like in Daniel,

  105. which were Aramaic.

  106. Very good.

  107. It was written over 1,500 years.

  108. And despite all this diversity

  109. and all this variance from a human perspective,

  110. the Bible, the Holy Word of God,

  111. reveals one way of salvation,

  112. one God, one hope, one promise.

  113. The one message of all the scriptures

  114. is life in Christ alone,

  115. by grace alone, through faith alone.

  116. That's what it very clearly presents

  117. to everyone who God will give an ear

  118. to hear the good news.

  119. 2 Peter 1, verses 19 and 21 says,

    2 Peter 1:19

  120. we have the prophetic word confirmed,

  121. which you do well to heed

  122. as a light that shines in a dark place

  123. until the day dawns,

  124. knowing that scripture

  125. came through holy men of God,

  126. speaking as they were moved

  127. by the Holy Spirit.

  128. That's how this glorious,

  129. lovely library,

  130. this Bible came to be.

  131. The reason I picked our passage today,

  132. more broadly,

  133. it's because all of Psalm 119

  134. is all about the word of God.

  135. Every single couplet

  136. is going to mention the law,

  137. the word,

  138. the testimonies of God

  139. in some form or another.

  140. The whole psalm lifts up

  141. the loveliness of God's word.

  142. But the reason I chose Dalif,

  143. specifically,

  144. this little stanza,

  145. is because we're so small,

  146. I'm able to know our congregation

  147. very well,

  148. very easily,

  149. very naturally.

  150. And this psalm,

  151. this stanza in particular,

  152. is for those who feel dead.

  153. Yes, Christians,

  154. who have the Holy Spirit,

  155. but we feel a deadness.

  156. We need reviving.

  157. It's for Christians who feel weak,

  158. and that's who we are.

  159. Some of us,

  160. army crawled this morning

  161. just to be here.

  162. It's for those who are so aware

  163. of their sin

  164. and hate their sin.

  165. And it's for us who feel very unloving

  166. much of the time.

  167. That's why I picked it.

  168. It's because I don't want to just tell you

  169. what God's word is.

  170. I want you to be reminded

  171. and experience it

  172. in the condition that we are right now,

  173. in our weakness.

  174. Let the power of God's word in Christ

  175. wash over us.

  176. So here's four encouragements

  177. from this passage.

  178. Number one,

  179. when your soul clings to the dust,

  180. ask the Lord to disciple you

  181. in his word.

  182. When your soul clings to the dust,

  183. ask the Lord to disciple you

  184. in his word.

  185. Look at verse 25.

  186. That's exactly what the psalmist cries out.

  187. My soul clings to the dust.

  188. Revive me according to your word.

  189. I have declared my ways

  190. and you answered me.

  191. Teach me your statutes.

  192. By the light of nature,

  193. every one of us can clearly see

  194. God's goodness, wisdom, and power.

  195. So every one of us,

  196. before this holy God,

  197. is left without excuse.

  198. We sit here knowing that

  199. God is my creator.

  200. He is holy and just,

  201. and I owe him worship.

  202. We know this.

  203. Yet we also know that we fall

  204. short of his glory,

  205. don't we?

  206. We don't glorify and enjoy God,

  207. even though that's the end

  208. for which he created us.

  209. And so we know what dust is,

  210. the way the psalmist uses it poetically.

  211. God made us human beings

  212. from the dust.

  213. Dust we are,

  214. and to dust our bodies

  215. shall return.

  216. So when he says,

  217. my soul clings to the dust here,

  218. dust stands for

  219. the lust of our flesh,

  220. this body that we're in

  221. in this life,

  222. our pride in this life,

  223. worldliness.

  224. That's the dust

  225. that his soul is clinging on to.

  226. We know what this is like,

  227. don't we?

  228. Ephesians 2, 3,

  229. speaking to the church,

  230. people like you and me,

  231. reminds us that

  232. we were all slaves to the dust.

  233. By nature,

  234. children of God's wrath.

  235. We all once conducted ourselves

  236. in the lust of our flesh,

  237. fulfilling the desires of the flesh

  238. and of our fallen minds.

  239. He says,

  240. my soul clings to the dust.

  241. That verb,

  242. to cling,

  243. it's used and translated

  244. in other parts as cleaves.

  245. It sticks to it.

  246. It's intimately joined together.

  247. It's a bond

  248. that's exceptionally tight.

  249. It's like two objects

  250. that are glued together,

  251. unwavering,

  252. deep affection for that thing.

  253. Specifically in Genesis 2, 24,

  254. it's the exact same word

  255. used to describe

  256. how a man will leave

  257. his father and mother

  258. and shall cling

  259. or cleave to his wife

  260. and the two will be one flesh.

  261. And this is what

  262. the psalmist is saying.

  263. My soul clings

  264. to the dust.

  265. Put it in our own words,

  266. it could be like this.

  267. My body

  268. will return to dust

  269. when I die.

  270. I know this.

  271. But my inner man,

  272. my soul,

  273. still clings

  274. for this perishing life.

  275. My thoughts,

  276. my desires,

  277. my personality,

  278. who I am inside,

  279. it clings to this earth,

  280. the dust from which

  281. I was made.

  282. And so what's the solution?

  283. Look again at this verse.

  284. He says,

  285. revive me according

  286. to your word.

  287. I've declared my ways

  288. to you.

  289. I've confessed

  290. this is who I am

  291. and you answered me.

  292. You spoke.

  293. He says,

  294. teach me

  295. your statutes.

  296. The solution

  297. is the same for us

  298. as for the psalmist.

  299. because this is my condition,

  300. because this is the

  301. bent of my soul.

  302. I need God himself

  303. to disciple me.

  304. Teach me

  305. according to your word.

  306. Look in verse 25.

  307. He uses that

  308. to describe the scriptures.

  309. He calls it

  310. the word of God.

  311. This is one of seven terms,

  312. one of seven titles

  313. given to the scriptures.

  314. The word of God

  315. is the most broad.

  316. It's the way

  317. that God has revealed

  318. or unveiled

  319. and made known

  320. what his promises are.

  321. He says,

  322. Lord,

  323. I'm declaring this

  324. to you about my ways.

  325. My soul is crooked.

  326. If left to myself,

  327. my soul

  328. will still actively

  329. and persistently

  330. choose dust

  331. over glory.

  332. If left to myself,

  333. I will hold tightly

  334. to this world

  335. instead of

  336. to the world to come.

  337. If left to myself,

  338. my affections

  339. will grasp

  340. tightly to this life

  341. instead of the next.

  342. My flesh is too powerful

  343. for any other philosophy,

  344. any other course of study,

  345. any other teacher.

  346. No other source of truth

  347. in this world

  348. is sufficient

  349. to give me

  350. the knowledge of God,

  351. to know the will of God,

  352. that it's necessary

  353. for salvation,

  354. that God reveal himself

  355. to me.

  356. And in his word,

  357. he's given us

  358. the full revelation

  359. of how he can bring life

  360. to a soul

  361. that's twisted like that.

  362. The psalmist

  363. confesses,

  364. Lord,

  365. I need you to speak to me.

  366. Answer me,

  367. he says.

  368. In verse 26,

  369. teach me your statutes.

  370. This is how God speaks to him

  371. and answers his cry.

  372. And it's the second term used,

  373. statutes.

  374. Statutes describe

  375. God's binding,

  376. permanent decrees.

  377. Statutes are permanent

  378. because the literal Hebrew word

  379. is engraving something

  380. in stone,

  381. inscribing it

  382. somewhere that won't get erased.

  383. These are the statutes of God.

  384. He says,

  385. Lord,

  386. your word is stable.

  387. My soul is not stable.

  388. I'm going to put myself

  389. under your teaching,

  390. your statutes over me.

  391. And you discipline me,

  392. you disciple me.

  393. You correct my heart.

  394. You be my teacher.

  395. I'll be your student.

  396. And your statutes

  397. are my curriculum.

  398. Revive me, Lord.

  399. Put your life

  400. inside my body.

  401. My body,

  402. my flesh,

  403. it's like a bag of dust.

  404. Breathe life into me,

  405. enliven me

  406. according to your word.

  407. And he says

  408. he trusts God to do this

  409. because God has promised

  410. this in his word.

  411. And the psalmist

  412. didn't have the full revelation

  413. which we do now.

  414. We can turn to 1 Peter 1.23

  415. and be reminded

  416. how we too

  417. are born again

  418. of incomparable,

  419. incorruptible seed

  420. through the word

  421. of God

  422. which lives

  423. and abides

  424. forever.

  425. It's the same prayer

  426. in the New Testament.

  427. And this means this.

  428. God is the one

  429. who spoke

  430. and creation

  431. came to be.

  432. And that same

  433. word of God

  434. that creates

  435. life

  436. is just as powerful

  437. to revive again

  438. my soul

  439. and to sustain

  440. his life

  441. inside of me.

  442. So dear brothers

  443. and sisters,

  444. when your soul

  445. is clinging

  446. to the dust

  447. and it will do

  448. this again

  449. as long as

  450. we're in this life,

  451. ask the Lord

  452. to disciple you

  453. according to

  454. his word.

  455. One more time.

  456. And if you

  457. feel spiritually

  458. dead today

  459. or at another

  460. moment maybe

  461. later this week,

  462. through

  463. his word

  464. the Lord

  465. promises

  466. to revive you

  467. again.

  468. Oh how lovely

  469. is the word

  470. of our Lord.

  471. The second

  472. encouragement

  473. is this.

  474. When your soul

  475. is depressed

  476. meditate on

  477. what the Lord

  478. has done

  479. in his word.

  480. When your soul

  481. is depressed

  482. meditate

  483. on what

  484. the Lord

  485. has done

  486. in his word.

  487. Look at verse 27.

  488. Make me understand

  489. the way

  490. of your precepts

  491. so shall I

  492. meditate

  493. on your

  494. wonderful works.

  495. My soul

  496. melts

  497. from heaviness.

  498. Strengthen me

  499. according

  500. to your word.

  501. When was the

  502. last time

  503. you experienced

  504. this level

  505. of depression?

  506. I know that

  507. for some of us

  508. it was just

  509. this past week.

  510. Verse 28

  511. he describes it

  512. as the soul,

  513. the inner man

  514. melting

  515. because of a

  516. great heaviness.

  517. can you imagine

  518. the weight

  519. it would take

  520. to collapse

  521. your soul

  522. down to that

  523. point

  524. of liquefying

  525. it

  526. and letting

  527. it drip

  528. out of your

  529. body.

  530. It's like

  531. he's saying

  532. I don't know

  533. how to describe

  534. it but

  535. the heaviness

  536. upon me

  537. is so

  538. unbearable.

  539. My body

  540. is like a

  541. vessel

  542. that's just

  543. leaking out

  544. my very soul.

  545. what he says

  546. next in verse

  547. 27

  548. make me

  549. understand

  550. the way

  551. of your

  552. precepts.

  553. God

  554. I can't even

  555. understand

  556. what's going

  557. on inside

  558. my own

  559. soul

  560. and so

  561. please

  562. make me

  563. understand

  564. your

  565. precepts.

  566. And here's

  567. the third

  568. word he uses

  569. in this

  570. stanza

  571. to describe

  572. the word

  573. of God

  574. it's

  575. precepts.

  576. Precepts

  577. highlights

  578. the detailed

  579. specific

  580. instructions

  581. appointed

  582. by God

  583. to govern

  584. his people.

  585. And it's

  586. something that

  587. we won't

  588. understand

  589. naturally.

  590. We can't

  591. just sit

  592. there with

  593. God's

  594. word and

  595. completely

  596. grasp it

  597. on our

  598. own.

  599. It has

  600. to be

  601. the Holy

  602. Spirit

  603. illuminating

  604. it,

  605. teaching

  606. it,

  607. showing

  608. through

  609. meditation

  610. on God's

  611. word

  612. the details

  613. inside

  614. his word

  615. that are

  616. life-giving

  617. that are

  618. a blessing

  619. for us.

  620. He prays

  621. so to

  622. speak,

  623. take my

  624. thoughts

  625. off of

  626. myself

  627. and put

  628. my thoughts

  629. on your

  630. word instead.

  631. Lord,

  632. I'm so

  633. depressed

  634. by my

  635. own guilt,

  636. by what

  637. I have

  638. done,

  639. so teach

  640. me to

  641. meditate

  642. instead

  643. on your

  644. wonderful

  645. works.

  646. Strengthen

  647. me,

  648. Lord,

  649. as I

  650. ponder

  651. you,

  652. what you

  653. have done

  654. as recorded

  655. in your

  656. word.

  657. Romans

  658. 15,

  659. 4 tells

  660. us,

  661. this is

  662. why we

  663. have

  664. the

  665. Bible.

  666. God's

  667. word

  668. was

  669. written

  670. for

  671. our

  672. learning

  673. that

  674. we

  675. through

  676. the

  677. patience

  678. and

  679. comfort

  680. of

  681. the

  682. scriptures

  683. might

  684. have

  685. hope.

  686. Turn

  687. to the

  688. scriptures

  689. when we

  690. need

  691. hope,

  692. when our

  693. souls

  694. are

  695. depressed.

  696. We

  697. can

  698. thank the

  699. Lord

  700. and the

  701. language

  702. of our

  703. confession.

  704. God,

  705. you have

  706. revealed

  707. yourself

  708. in writing.

  709. By

  710. your

  711. word,

  712. you

  713. establish

  714. and

  715. comfort

  716. the

  717. church

  718. with

  719. greater

  720. certainty

  721. against

  722. the

  723. corruption

  724. of the

  725. flesh,

  726. the

  727. malice

  728. of

  729. Satan,

  730. and the

  731. worldliness

  732. of the

  733. world.

  734. Because of

  735. your

  736. statutes,

  737. we know

  738. the

  739. truth.

  740. And this

  741. authority

  742. that God

  743. gives us

  744. through

  745. his

  746. word

  747. does not

  748. depend

  749. on the

  750. testimony

  751. of any

  752. person

  753. or

  754. church,

  755. but on

  756. God,

  757. the

  758. author

  759. alone,

  760. who is

  761. truth

  762. itself.

  763. Your

  764. word is

  765. a perfect

  766. treasure

  767. of

  768. heavenly

  769. instruction.

  770. It

  771. has

  772. God

  773. for

  774. its

  775. author,

  776. salvation

  777. for

  778. its

  779. end,

  780. and

  781. truth

  782. without

  783. any

  784. mixture

  785. of

  786. error

  787. for

  788. its

  789. matter.

  790. How

  791. lovely

  792. is

  793. the

  794. word

  795. of

  796. God.

  797. So

  798. brothers

  799. and

  800. sisters,

  801. when your

  802. soul

  803. is

  804. depressed,

  805. meditate

  806. on what

  807. the

  808. Lord

  809. has

  810. done

  811. as

  812. recorded

  813. in

  814. his

  815. word.

  816. If

  817. you

  818. feel

  819. weak,

  820. remember

  821. how

  822. through

  823. his

  824. word

  825. the

  826. Lord

  827. promises

  828. to

  829. strengthen

  830. you

  831. and

  832. me.

  833. How

  834. lovely

  835. is

  836. the

  837. word

  838. of

  839. our

  840. Lord.

  841. The

  842. third

  843. encouragement

  844. is

  845. this,

  846. when

  847. your

  848. deeds

  849. accuse

  850. you,

  851. lay

  852. before

  853. you

  854. what

  855. the

  856. Lord

  857. has

  858. decreed

  859. in

  860. his

  861. word.

  862. When

  863. your

  864. deeds

  865. accuse

  866. You

  867. lay

  868. before

  869. you

  870. what

  871. the

  872. Lord

  873. has

  874. decreed

  875. in

  876. his

  877. word.

  878. Look at

  879. verse

  880. 29.

  881. The

  882. psalmist

  883. prays,

  884. remove

  885. from

  886. me

  887. the

  888. way

  889. of

  890. lying

  891. and

  892. grant

  893. me

  894. your

  895. law

  896. graciously.

  897. 30.

  898. I

  899. have

  900. chosen

  901. the

  902. way

  903. of

  904. truth.

  905. Your

  906. judgments

  907. I

  908. have

  909. laid

  910. before

  911. me.

  912. In

  913. these

  914. verses,

  915. the

  916. psalmist

  917. knows

  918. the

  919. temptation

  920. to

  921. lie,

  922. to

  923. sin.

  924. He's

  925. in need

  926. of

  927. grace.

  928. He

  929. sees

  930. options

  931. before

  932. him.

  933. He's

  934. tempted

  935. away

  936. from

  937. the

  938. truth

  939. and

  940. the

  941. Lord

  942. persuades

  943. him

  944. on

  945. the

  946. way

  947. of

  948. truth.

  949. And

  950. he

  951. says

  952. in the

  953. last

  954. phrase

  955. there,

  956. your

  957. judgments

  958. I

  959. have

  960. laid

  961. before

  962. me.

  963. This

  964. is how

  965. God

  966. did

  967. it.

  968. So

  969. he's

  970. guilty.

  971. He's

  972. accused.

  973. He's

  974. wrestling

  975. with his

  976. own

  977. sin.

  978. The

  979. Bible

  980. tells us

  981. that the

  982. devil is

  983. the

  984. accuser

  985. of

  986. God's

  987. people.

  988. Even

  989. though

  990. Christ

  991. has

  992. silenced

  993. our

  994. adversary

  995. before

  996. the

  997. throne

  998. of

  999. God,

  1000. the

  1001. devil

  1002. gets

  1003. no

  1004. audience

  1005. in the

  1006. throne

  1007. of

  1008. heaven

  1009. to

  1010. accuse

  1011. God's

  1012. people

  1013. any

  1014. longer.

  1015. But

  1016. the

  1017. devil

  1018. still

  1019. accuses

  1020. you

  1021. and

  1022. me

  1023. to

  1024. ourselves,

  1025. doesn't

  1026. he?

  1027. The

  1028. devil

  1029. lays

  1030. our

  1031. recent

  1032. and

  1033. past

  1034. sins

  1035. before

  1036. us.

  1037. The

  1038. devil

  1039. speaks

  1040. condemning

  1041. thoughts

  1042. into

  1043. our

  1044. ears.

  1045. The

  1046. devil

  1047. tries

  1048. to

  1049. burden

  1050. God's

  1051. people.

  1052. with

  1053. guilt.

  1054. And how

  1055. is it

  1056. that the

  1057. Lord

  1058. ministers

  1059. to us

  1060. in those

  1061. moments?

  1062. Verse

  1063. 29,

  1064. he says,

  1065. remove

  1066. from me

  1067. the way

  1068. of lying.

  1069. Lord,

  1070. I don't

  1071. ask you

  1072. to lower

  1073. your

  1074. standard

  1075. of

  1076. righteousness.

  1077. A

  1078. lie

  1079. is a

  1080. lie.

  1081. And I

  1082. have a

  1083. bent

  1084. toward

  1085. being

  1086. deceitful.

  1087. But he

  1088. says next,

  1089. grant me

  1090. your law

  1091. graciously.

  1092. Your law

  1093. is good,

  1094. but I

  1095. can only

  1096. receive

  1097. from you

  1098. the grace

  1099. that the

  1100. law exposes

  1101. my great

  1102. need of.

  1103. And here

  1104. he uses a

  1105. fourth term

  1106. for the

  1107. word of

  1108. God,

  1109. law.

  1110. The

  1111. Hebrew word

  1112. is Torah.

  1113. The first

  1114. five books

  1115. of the

  1116. Bible and

  1117. also the

  1118. law.

  1119. So it's

  1120. the law

  1121. of God.

  1122. It can

  1123. mean teaching

  1124. or direction,

  1125. instruction.

  1126. It's

  1127. revelation

  1128. that

  1129. steers

  1130. the

  1131. believer

  1132. away

  1133. from the

  1134. path

  1135. of

  1136. deceit

  1137. that

  1138. leads

  1139. to

  1140. destruction.

  1141. He

  1142. says your

  1143. judgments

  1144. I have

  1145. laid

  1146. before me.

  1147. And there's

  1148. the next

  1149. term,

  1150. the fifth

  1151. one,

  1152. judgments,

  1153. the judgments

  1154. of God.

  1155. Another

  1156. English

  1157. translation

  1158. would be

  1159. rules or

  1160. ordinances.

  1161. These are

  1162. God's

  1163. legal

  1164. declarations

  1165. about what

  1166. is right,

  1167. true,

  1168. and good.

  1169. 2 Timothy

  1170. 3.15

  1171. says help

  1172. me to

  1173. know the

  1174. holy

  1175. scriptures

  1176. which are

  1177. able to

  1178. make you

  1179. wise for

  1180. salvation

  1181. through faith

  1182. in Jesus

  1183. Christ.

  1184. And so

  1185. what he

  1186. does,

  1187. the psalmist

  1188. crying out in

  1189. his sin is

  1190. to say Lord

  1191. your judgments

  1192. what you have

  1193. said is right

  1194. and wrong,

  1195. I lay it all

  1196. before me.

  1197. I don't

  1198. dodge your

  1199. law,

  1200. I don't

  1201. try to

  1202. bend it or

  1203. find a way

  1204. to work

  1205. around it.

  1206. It's all

  1207. laid before

  1208. me.

  1209. And now

  1210. you need

  1211. to minister

  1212. your law

  1213. to me

  1214. in a

  1215. gracious

  1216. way.

  1217. And so

  1218. what God

  1219. does is

  1220. he gospels

  1221. him through

  1222. it.

  1223. And that's

  1224. what the

  1225. Lord loves

  1226. to do,

  1227. it's to

  1228. gospel you

  1229. and me

  1230. out of

  1231. our guilt

  1232. time and

  1233. time again.

  1234. We can

  1235. rehearse this

  1236. together this

  1237. way.

  1238. We can

  1239. pray like

  1240. the psalmist

  1241. Lord,

  1242. I know

  1243. you are

  1244. holy and

  1245. just.

  1246. I know

  1247. your law

  1248. is good.

  1249. Lord,

  1250. I'm a

  1251. sinful

  1252. law

  1253. breaker.

  1254. I lay

  1255. all your

  1256. judgments

  1257. before me

  1258. and that's

  1259. what it

  1260. makes me.

  1261. I confess

  1262. my heart

  1263. is deceitful,

  1264. my lips

  1265. have lied,

  1266. and I've

  1267. rejected the

  1268. way of

  1269. truth.

  1270. But I

  1271. know from

  1272. your word

  1273. that I

  1274. deserve a

  1275. capital

  1276. punishment

  1277. for my

  1278. sin against

  1279. you.

  1280. When I

  1281. sin against

  1282. you,

  1283. I'm acting

  1284. as if I'm

  1285. God.

  1286. But yet,

  1287. Lord,

  1288. in your

  1289. same word,

  1290. you show

  1291. that you are

  1292. gracious to

  1293. me.

  1294. you bound

  1295. yourself to

  1296. a wretched

  1297. sinner like

  1298. me by

  1299. your covenant

  1300. of grace.

  1301. You've

  1302. ministered your

  1303. law graciously

  1304. to me.

  1305. And it's

  1306. by the

  1307. blood of

  1308. the only

  1309. substitute

  1310. that you

  1311. could rightfully

  1312. accept.

  1313. That's the

  1314. life and

  1315. the death

  1316. of Jesus

  1317. Christ.

  1318. He's the

  1319. one who

  1320. chose the

  1321. way of

  1322. truth when

  1323. I failed.

  1324. Your

  1325. judgment

  1326. that I

  1327. must pay,

  1328. you took

  1329. upon yourself

  1330. instead,

  1331. upon our

  1332. Savior,

  1333. the Lord

  1334. Jesus.

  1335. We know

  1336. by your

  1337. word,

  1338. your decree

  1339. to save

  1340. a people

  1341. for yourself.

  1342. We know

  1343. by your

  1344. word,

  1345. your decree

  1346. to love

  1347. us in

  1348. Christ while

  1349. we were

  1350. still your

  1351. enemies.

  1352. We know

  1353. by your

  1354. word,

  1355. your decree

  1356. before the

  1357. foundation

  1358. of the

  1359. world to

  1360. redeem us

  1361. in Christ.

  1362. We know

  1363. by your

  1364. word,

  1365. your decree

  1366. to be

  1367. our God

  1368. and to

  1369. have us

  1370. be your

  1371. people.

  1372. forevermore.

  1373. We know

  1374. this by

  1375. your word

  1376. and I've

  1377. laid all

  1378. of your

  1379. word in

  1380. front of

  1381. me to

  1382. receive your

  1383. grace one

  1384. more time.

  1385. We can

  1386. thank the

  1387. Lord for

  1388. his lovely

  1389. word.

  1390. His holy

  1391. scriptures are

  1392. the only

  1393. sufficient,

  1394. certain,

  1395. and infallible

  1396. standard of

  1397. all saving

  1398. knowledge,

  1399. faith,

  1400. and obedience.

  1401. obedience.

  1402. We praise

  1403. God through

  1404. the Holy

  1405. Spirit.

  1406. It's his

  1407. spirit who

  1408. makes us

  1409. to see the

  1410. heavenliness of

  1411. the contents

  1412. of the

  1413. Bible,

  1414. the power

  1415. of the

  1416. system of

  1417. truth,

  1418. the majesty

  1419. of the

  1420. style,

  1421. the harmony

  1422. of all the

  1423. parts,

  1424. and the

  1425. central focus

  1426. on giving

  1427. all glory

  1428. to God

  1429. in Jesus

  1430. Christ by

  1431. his word.

  1432. So,

  1433. brothers and

  1434. sisters,

  1435. when your

  1436. deeds accuse

  1437. you,

  1438. lay before

  1439. you what

  1440. the Lord

  1441. has decreed

  1442. in his

  1443. word.

  1444. When you

  1445. feel sinful

  1446. before the

  1447. holy God,

  1448. remember that

  1449. through his

  1450. word,

  1451. the Lord

  1452. removes you

  1453. from the

  1454. way of sin.

  1455. He reminds

  1456. you you're

  1457. covered in

  1458. Christ's

  1459. righteousness.

  1460. And we have

  1461. certainty of

  1462. this because

  1463. it comes from

  1464. the very

  1465. word of God.

  1466. himself.

  1467. Oh,

  1468. how lovely

  1469. is the

  1470. word of

  1471. our Lord.

  1472. Or the

  1473. fourth and

  1474. final encouragement

  1475. for today

  1476. is this.

  1477. When you

  1478. cling to

  1479. what the

  1480. Lord has

  1481. declared in

  1482. his word,

  1483. he shall

  1484. direct

  1485. your desires.

  1486. When you

  1487. and I

  1488. cling to

  1489. what the

  1490. Lord has

  1491. declared in

  1492. his word,

  1493. he shall

  1494. direct

  1495. our desires.

  1496. Look at

  1497. verse 31.

  1498. He says,

  1499. I cling

  1500. to your

  1501. testimonies,

  1502. O Lord.

  1503. Do not

  1504. put me

  1505. to shame.

  1506. I will

  1507. run the

  1508. course of

  1509. your

  1510. commandments,

  1511. for you

  1512. shall

  1513. enlarge

  1514. my

  1515. heart.

  1516. You

  1517. notice this

  1518. beautiful

  1519. full circle.

  1520. It's a

  1521. great

  1522. redirection

  1523. of the

  1524. psalmist's

  1525. soul from

  1526. where he

  1527. started in

  1528. this stanza

  1529. and where

  1530. he is now

  1531. at the

  1532. end of

  1533. it,

  1534. isn't

  1535. it?

  1536. At the

  1537. beginning of

  1538. this stanza,

  1539. when he

  1540. started this

  1541. prayer,

  1542. you remember

  1543. what his

  1544. soul clung

  1545. to?

  1546. You can

  1547. say it,

  1548. it clung

  1549. to the

  1550. dust.

  1551. In

  1552. verse 25,

  1553. but now

  1554. look at

  1555. what the

  1556. soul clings

  1557. to,

  1558. it's the

  1559. same word,

  1560. the same

  1561. verb in

  1562. verse 31,

  1563. I now

  1564. cling to

  1565. your

  1566. testimonies.

  1567. Here's our

  1568. sixth term

  1569. for the

  1570. word of

  1571. God,

  1572. testimonies.

  1573. These are

  1574. God's

  1575. solemn

  1576. witnesses

  1577. !

  1578. about

  1579. his

  1580. own

  1581. character

  1582. and

  1583. his

  1584. covenant.

  1585. It's

  1586. so

  1587. glorious,

  1588. it's

  1589. so

  1590. otherworldly

  1591. that no

  1592. human mind

  1593. could conceive

  1594. of a

  1595. creator

  1596. God,

  1597. and that

  1598. this God

  1599. would covenant

  1600. himself to

  1601. a people.

  1602. It's God

  1603. self-testifying,

  1604. it's the

  1605. testimonies of

  1606. who God

  1607. is,

  1608. preserved for

  1609. us in

  1610. writing,

  1611. so that we

  1612. can have

  1613. certainty

  1614. and believe.

  1615. it's like

  1616. the psalmist

  1617. says,

  1618. I've

  1619. tasted

  1620. now by

  1621. the end

  1622. of the

  1623. stanza

  1624. in your

  1625. word that

  1626. you are

  1627. God.

  1628. I've

  1629. experienced

  1630. through your

  1631. word that

  1632. you are

  1633. good,

  1634. and now

  1635. I'm stuck,

  1636. I cling

  1637. to Christ

  1638. through the

  1639. ministry of

  1640. the word.

  1641. I cling

  1642. now to

  1643. your

  1644. testimonies.

  1645. Lord,

  1646. you have

  1647. knit my

  1648. soul

  1649. intimately

  1650. together with

  1651. Christ,

  1652. your living

  1653. word.

  1654. I'm glued

  1655. to your

  1656. word.

  1657. I have a

  1658. deep affection

  1659. for you,

  1660. oh Lord,

  1661. through your

  1662. word,

  1663. your

  1664. testimonies.

  1665. The quality

  1666. of your

  1667. word is

  1668. incomparable.

  1669. It's

  1670. lovely.

  1671. The

  1672. perfections

  1673. of your

  1674. word are

  1675. matchless.

  1676. Lord,

  1677. I'm trusting

  1678. your testimonies,

  1679. your promises,

  1680. your word.

  1681. I trust,

  1682. I receive,

  1683. I rest in

  1684. your word.

  1685. Lord,

  1686. by your

  1687. help,

  1688. I'm not

  1689. hedging my

  1690. bets anymore.

  1691. I'm throwing

  1692. myself on what

  1693. you've promised

  1694. with abandon.

  1695. That's what he

  1696. says,

  1697. let me not

  1698. be put to

  1699. shame,

  1700. Lord.

  1701. Prove

  1702. yourself

  1703. true.

  1704. Don't

  1705. stop being

  1706. faithful now,

  1707. Lord.

  1708. I need

  1709. your steadfast

  1710. love again

  1711. now.

  1712. I need

  1713. your covenant

  1714. faithfulness

  1715. again.

  1716. run.

  1717. And I

  1718. love verse

  1719. 32.

  1720. He says,

  1721. I will run

  1722. the course

  1723. of your

  1724. commandments.

  1725. Here's the

  1726. seventh and

  1727. final term

  1728. for the

  1729. word of

  1730. God.

  1731. Commandments.

  1732. Commandments

  1733. are God's

  1734. authoritative

  1735. orders.

  1736. It's what a

  1737. king pronounces

  1738. over his

  1739. kingdom.

  1740. They provide

  1741. a clear,

  1742. defined path

  1743. for how the

  1744. citizens of

  1745. the kingdom

  1746. are to

  1747. live.

  1748. And he's

  1749. saying,

  1750. Lord,

  1751. prove

  1752. yourself

  1753. once more

  1754. like you

  1755. always do.

  1756. And notice

  1757. how he's

  1758. asking it

  1759. in prayer

  1760. form.

  1761. Verse 32.

  1762. I will

  1763. run the

  1764. course of

  1765. your

  1766. commandments,

  1767. but he

  1768. hasn't run

  1769. yet.

  1770. And he

  1771. says,

  1772. for you

  1773. shall

  1774. enlarge

  1775. my heart.

  1776. God

  1777. hasn't

  1778. enlarged

  1779. his heart

  1780. yet.

  1781. He's

  1782. praying

  1783. this with

  1784. hope,

  1785. trusting

  1786. the promises,

  1787. trusting

  1788. what the

  1789. king has

  1790. said.

  1791. It's

  1792. still in

  1793. prayer

  1794. form,

  1795. but it's

  1796. prayed as

  1797. a believer

  1798. who has

  1799. known God's

  1800. tender mercies

  1801. and who

  1802. needs them

  1803. again.

  1804. It's a

  1805. believer who

  1806. knows that

  1807. God's mercies

  1808. are new

  1809. every morning.

  1810. How do we

  1811. know this?

  1812. From his

  1813. word.

  1814. He said so.

  1815. It's like he's

  1816. saying,

  1817. Lord, I know

  1818. you will do

  1819. this again

  1820. because you

  1821. are faithful.

  1822. You promise

  1823. yourself to

  1824. your people

  1825. again and

  1826. again in

  1827. your word.

  1828. I love

  1829. how we

  1830. sing this

  1831. when we

  1832. hide it

  1833. in our

  1834. hearts.

  1835. Lamentations

  1836. 3, 22

  1837. and 23.

  1838. The word

  1839. of God.

  1840. The steadfast

  1841. love of

  1842. the Lord

  1843. never fails.

  1844. His mercies

  1845. never come

  1846. to an end.

  1847. They are new

  1848. every morning.

  1849. Great is

  1850. thy faithfulness,

  1851. O Lord.

  1852. Lord.

  1853. And then

  1854. he says,

  1855. I shall

  1856. run for

  1857. you shall

  1858. enlarge

  1859. my heart.

  1860. Our legs

  1861. run toward

  1862. whatever our

  1863. hearts consider

  1864. lovely,

  1865. don't they?

  1866. That's what

  1867. we move

  1868. toward.

  1869. We move

  1870. closer to

  1871. something we

  1872. love.

  1873. We come to

  1874. love something

  1875. when we

  1876. behold it

  1877. as lovely.

  1878. And it's

  1879. true that

  1880. the more we

  1881. love something,

  1882. in general,

  1883. despite our

  1884. own weakness,

  1885. the faster

  1886. we will move

  1887. to that

  1888. thing.

  1889. Our hearts

  1890. are small,

  1891. so that's

  1892. our problem.

  1893. We don't

  1894. have great

  1895. capacity to

  1896. behold how

  1897. lovely God

  1898. is.

  1899. And so,

  1900. first the

  1901. Lord has

  1902. to enlargen

  1903. the heart.

  1904. He has

  1905. to make

  1906. our hearts

  1907. capable of

  1908. great love.

  1909. The wonderful

  1910. word in

  1911. English for

  1912. a great

  1913. heart,

  1914. an enlarged

  1915. heart,

  1916. is

  1917. magnanimity,

  1918. magnanimous.

  1919. It means

  1920. big-hearted.

  1921. That's what

  1922. the Spirit

  1923. does to

  1924. Christians.

  1925. He expands

  1926. our capacity

  1927. for love,

  1928. and he

  1929. fills us

  1930. with more

  1931. love for

  1932. God,

  1933. because God

  1934. first loved

  1935. us.

  1936. So for you

  1937. and I,

  1938. who in our

  1939. flesh,

  1940. we feel

  1941. unloving,

  1942. remember that

  1943. through his

  1944. word,

  1945. the Lord

  1946. promises to

  1947. enlarge

  1948. our hearts.

  1949. We can

  1950. be fully

  1951. persuaded and

  1952. assured,

  1953. like the

  1954. psalmist of

  1955. the infallible

  1956. truth and

  1957. the divine

  1958. authority of

  1959. the scriptures.

  1960. And these

  1961. come from the

  1962. internal work of

  1963. the Spirit,

  1964. who bears

  1965. witness by and

  1966. with the

  1967. word in our

  1968. hearts.

  1969. Much more

  1970. powerful than

  1971. our own

  1972. flesh.

  1973. So when you

  1974. and I

  1975. are tempted

  1976. to cling to

  1977. the dust

  1978. one more

  1979. time,

  1980. we trust

  1981. the word

  1982. of God,

  1983. the promises

  1984. of God,

  1985. and the

  1986. power of

  1987. the Spirit

  1988. to apply

  1989. the word

  1990. of God,

  1991. to cause

  1992. our hearts

  1993. instead to

  1994. cling to

  1995. what God

  1996. has declared

  1997. in his

  1998. word,

  1999. trusting he

  2000. will,

  2001. by his

  2002. power,

  2003. direct our

  2004. desires back

  2005. toward him.

  2006. Oh,

  2007. how lovely

  2008. is the

  2009. word of

  2010. our Lord.

  2011. Let's pray

  2012. and thank

  2013. him.

  2014. Oh,

  2015. Father,

  2016. it's so

  2017. marvelous to

  2018. think of

  2019. how you

  2020. even

  2021. communicate

  2022. with us,

  2023. Lord,

  2024. our creator,

  2025. and how

  2026. you have

  2027. acted in

  2028. human history

  2029. every single

  2030. generation,

  2031. how you've

  2032. revealed yourself

  2033. and you've

  2034. testified of

  2035. who you are

  2036. in your

  2037. word.

  2038. We thank

  2039. you for

  2040. this treasure,

  2041. Lord,

  2042. and how

  2043. through the

  2044. scriptures,

  2045. by the

  2046. work of

  2047. the spirit,

  2048. you draw

  2049. us to

  2050. yourself.

  2051. You magnify

  2052. your glory

  2053. to us.

  2054. You cause

  2055. us to

  2056. behold your

  2057. loveliness.

  2058. And your

  2059. spirit then

  2060. applies this

  2061. powerfully,

  2062. pulling our

  2063. hearts closer

  2064. and closer

  2065. to Christ.

  2066. Lord,

  2067. we praise

  2068. you that

  2069. Jesus ran

  2070. perfectly the

  2071. course of your

  2072. commandments.

  2073. needs.

  2074. Thank you

  2075. that you

  2076. give us

  2077. a desire,

  2078. Lord,

  2079. to be

  2080. closer to

  2081. you,

  2082. to walk

  2083. as a

  2084. disciple of

  2085. Jesus.

  2086. We thank

  2087. you for

  2088. our Lord

  2089. Jesus who

  2090. turns to

  2091. us and

  2092. says,

  2093. simply,

  2094. follow me.

  2095. May you be

  2096. glorified in

  2097. our lives,

  2098. in the life

  2099. of this

  2100. church,

  2101. we pray,

  2102. for Christ's

  2103. sake alone.

  2104. Amen.

  2105. Amen.

  2106. Amen.

  2107. Amen.

  2108. Amen.
