  1. You, my rock, do not be deaf to me.

  2. If you remain silent to me, I will be like those going down to the pit.

  3. Listen to the sound of my pleading when I cry for help,

  4. ! When I lift up my hands towards your holy sanctuary.

  5. Do not drag me along with the wicked, with the evildoers,

  6. who speak in friendly ways with their neighbors,

  7. while malice is in their hearts.

  8. Repay them according to what they have done,

  9. according to the evil of their deeds.

  10. Repay them according to the work of their hands.

  11. Give them back what they deserve.

  12. Because they do not consider what the Lord has done

  13. or the work of his hands,

  14. he will tear them down and not rebuild them.

  15. Blessed be the Lord,

  16. for he has heard the sound of my pleading.

  17. The Lord is my strength and my shield.

  18. My heart trusts in him and I am helped.

  19. Therefore, my heart celebrates and I give thanks to him with my song.

  20. The Lord is the strength of his people.

  21. He is a stronghold of salvation for his anointed.

  22. Save your people, bless your possession,

  23. shepherd them and carry them forever.

  24. The word of God for the people of God.

  25. You may be seated.

  26. The grass withers, the flowers fade,

  27. but the word of God remains forever.

  28. There are seasons in every believer's life

  29. when God seems silent.

  30. Your prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling.

  31. Scripture reading is as dry as dust.

  32. Worship songs that once stirred your heart

  33. now leave you numb.

  34. On Sunday morning,

  35. you might be tempted to stay home

  36. and skip the worship gathering.

  37. You wonder if God is listening at all.

  38. If you've ever felt that way,

  39. you're not alone.

  40. David knew this experience intimately.

  41. Several phrases in verses 1 and 2

  42. revealed David's fear

  43. that God had become silent towards him.

  44. Look at verses 1 and 2.

  45. Do not be deaf to me

  46. if you remain silent to me.

  47. Listen to the sound of my pleading.

  48. I cry to you for help.

  49. Sometimes God's silence

  50. is connected to unrepentant sin.

  51. At other times,

  52. he deepens our faith through waiting.

  53. The first calls for repentance,

  54. the second for perseverance.

  55. When God seems silent,

  56. our initial response

  57. should be to examine our hearts.

  58. The second London Baptist Confession of Faith,

  59. chapter 11 on justification,

  60. reminds us,

  61. God continues to forgive the sins

  62. of all who are justified.

  63. Even though they can never fall

  64. from a state of justification,

  65. they may fall under God's fatherly displeasure

  66. because of their sins.

  67. In that condition,

  68. they will not usually have

  69. the light of his face restored to them

  70. until they humble themselves,

  71. confess their sins,

  72. plead for pardon,

  73. and renew their faith in repentance.

  74. If you're in known sin,

  75. the first step is to repent.

  76. But in Psalm 28,

  77. David gives no indication

  78. that the silence resulted from sin.

  79. The Psalm is about the believer

  80. waiting on God

  81. without knowing the reason for the delay.

  82. Scripture doesn't always tell us

  83. why God appears silent.

  84. Sometimes it's discipline,

  85. sometimes testing,

  86. and sometimes,

  87. as with Job,

  88. the reason remains hidden.

  89. John Newton,

  90. the author of Amazing Grace,

  91. assures us,

  92. everything is needful

  93. that he sends.

  94. Nothing can be needful

  95. that he withholds.

  96. Lamentations 3 tells us

  97. the Lord is good

  98. for those who wait for him.

  99. To the person who seeks him,

  100. it's good to wait quietly

  101. for salvation from the Lord.

  102. For those seasons

  103. where God seems silent,

  104. Psalm 28 gives us

  105. five anchors to hold on to

  106. while we wait,

  107. and we'll also see those

  108. echoed in our confession.

  109. The first anchor,

  110. when God seems silent,

  111. trust that he is your rock.

  112. When God seems silent,

  113. trust that he is your rock.

  114. Look at verse 1.

  115. Lord, I call to you,

  116. my rock,

  117. do not be deaf to me.

  118. If you remain silent to me,

  119. I will be like those

  120. going down to the pit.

  121. David begins by appealing

  122. to God's character,

  123. my rock.

  124. Not just a rock,

  125. but my rock.

  126. The Lord is my rock,

  127. my fortress,

  128. my deliverer,

  129. my God,

  130. my rock where I seek refuge,

  131. my shield and the horn

  132. of my salvation,

  133. my stronghold,

  134. from Psalm 18.

  135. Psalm 71,

  136. be a rock of refuge for me

  137. where I can always go.

  138. Give the command to save me,

  139. for you are my rock

  140. and fortress.

  141. The rock is a firm foundation

  142. beneath our feet.

  143. As the hymn proclaims,

  144. on Christ the solid rock I stand,

  145. all other ground is sinking sand.

  146. When darkness seems to hide his face,

  147. I rest on his unchanging grace.

  148. Yet David is completely honest

  149. about his fear.

  150. If you remain silent to me,

  151. I will be like those

  152. going down to the pit.

  153. Pastor James Boyce observed,

  154. if he's appealing to God

  155. not to remain silent,

  156. it must have been because

  157. God has been silent for a while.

  158. He has not been answering

  159. and David is appealing to him

  160. to break silence

  161. and speak to him at last.

  162. So what did David mean

  163. by the pit in verse one?

  164. The pit refers to Sheol,

  165. the world of the dead.

  166. David cries out

  167. with the same desperation

  168. that Jonah had

  169. in the belly of the great fish.

  170. Jonah said,

  171. I called the Lord

  172. in my distress

  173. and he answered me.

  174. I cried out for help

  175. from deep inside Sheol.

  176. You heard my voice.

  177. And David often prayed that way.

  178. Psalm 94,

  179. If the Lord had not been my helper,

  180. I would soon rest

  181. in the silence of death.

  182. Psalm 143,

  183. Answer me quickly, Lord.

  184. My spirit fails.

  185. Don't hide your face from me

  186. or I'll be like those

  187. going down to the pit.

  188. And Christopher Ash

  189. in his commentary

  190. in the Psalms said,

  191. The pit here means

  192. not just dying,

  193. but dying without hope.

  194. Falling to the place

  195. where no words are spoken to God.

  196. And no words are heard from God.

  197. And again,

  198. this cry for help

  199. echoes throughout the Psalms.

  200. Hear my prayer, O Lord.

  201. Listen to my cry for help.

  202. Do not be silent at my tears.

  203. God, do not keep silent.

  204. Do not be deaf.

  205. Do not be quiet.

  206. I will say to God, my rock,

  207. why have you forgotten me?

  208. Why must I go about sorrow

  209. because of the enemy's oppression?

  210. Although David's soul is troubled,

  211. he still rests on God, his rock.

  212. Our confession beautifully summarizes

  213. this anchor in chapter 17

  214. on perseverance of the saints.

  215. Even though many storms

  216. and floods arise

  217. and beat against them,

  218. yet these things

  219. will never be able to move

  220. the elect from the foundation

  221. and rock

  222. to which they are anchored by faith.

  223. The felt sight

  224. of the light and love of God

  225. may be clouded

  226. and obscured from them

  227. for a time

  228. through their unbelief

  229. in the temptations of Satan.

  230. Yet God is still the same.

  231. They will certainly be kept

  232. by the power of God

  233. for salvation

  234. where they'll enjoy

  235. their purchased possession

  236. for they're engraved

  237. on the palms of his hands

  238. and their names

  239. have been written

  240. in the book of life

  241. from all eternity.

  242. That last line

  243. is from Isaiah 49

  244. where the Lord gives us comfort.

  245. Can a woman forget

  246. her nursing child

  247. or lack compassion

  248. for the child of her womb?

  249. Even if these forget,

  250. yet I will not forget you.

  251. Look, I have inscribed you

  252. on the palms of my hands.

  253. When you can't feel God,

  254. cling to what you know

  255. about God.

  256. When you can't feel Him,

  257. cling to what you know

  258. about Him.

  259. God's silence

  260. is not abandonment.

  261. He is still

  262. the unchanging rock.

  263. But trusting that God

  264. is the rock

  265. doesn't remove the waiting.

  266. So what do we do

  267. in that silence?

  268. David's answer is simple.

  269. We keep praying.

  270. Our second anchor.

  271. When God seems silent,

  272. keep praying.

  273. When God seems silent,

  274. keep praying.

  275. Again, verse 2.

  276. Listen to the sound

  277. of my pleading

  278. when I cry to you

  279. for help,

  280. when I lift up my hands

  281. toward your holy sanctuary.

  282. Now, in verse 1,

  283. David calls to the Lord.

  284. In verse 2,

  285. he cries out

  286. with a stronger word

  287. used for desperate pleading.

  288. Your translation

  289. might say supplications

  290. or pleas.

  291. But in verse 1,

  292. David cries,

  293. hear me.

  294. In verse 2,

  295. David pleads,

  296. help me.

  297. The word translated

  298. pleadings or supplications

  299. is plural,

  300. suggesting repeated cries

  301. for mercy

  302. rather than a single request.

  303. David doesn't pray once.

  304. He keeps praying.

  305. He keeps pleading.

  306. That principle

  307. is echoed

  308. in the New Testament.

  309. In Luke 18,

  310. Jesus told a parable

  311. on the need

  312. for them to pray

  313. always and not give up.

  314. And in Romans 12, 12,

  315. Paul reminds us,

  316. rejoice in hope,

  317. be patient in affliction,

  318. be persistent in prayer.

  319. Now, we see also

  320. that David prayed

  321. lifting up his hands

  322. towards God's sanctuary.

  323. He lifted up his hands

  324. towards the place

  325. of God's presence.

  326. Sanctuary is a word

  327. referring to the

  328. innermost part

  329. of the sanctuary,

  330. the most holy place.

  331. This is the place

  332. where the Ark of the Covenant

  333. resided,

  334. but more important,

  335. it was the place

  336. of the mercy seat,

  337. the place from which

  338. the Lord dispensed

  339. mercy to his people.

  340. Charles Spurgeon wrote,

  341. we stretch out empty hands

  342. for we are beggars.

  343. We lift them up

  344. for we seek heavenly supplies.

  345. We lift them towards

  346. the mercy seat of Jesus

  347. for there our expectation

  348. dwells.

  349. Today, we no longer look

  350. to a physical temple.

  351. We look to Christ,

  352. our true mercy seat.

  353. The confession reminds us

  354. in chapter 22

  355. in religious worship.

  356. Under the gospel,

  357. neither prayer

  358. nor any other part

  359. of religious worship

  360. is now restricted to

  361. or made more acceptable

  362. by the place

  363. where riches is done

  364. or towards which

  365. it is directed.

  366. Instead,

  367. God is to be worshipped

  368. everywhere

  369. in spirit and in truth,

  370. daily in each family

  371. and privately

  372. by individual.

  373. And Christopher Ash again

  374. points us to Christ.

  375. So now Christ

  376. has become for us

  377. the most holy sanctuary,

  378. the place where God

  379. makes covenant

  380. with those in Christ.

  381. Although sometimes

  382. God seems silent to us,

  383. God isn't silent.

  384. God speaks through

  385. his written word

  386. by his spirit

  387. centered on his son.

  388. Hebrews 1-2

  389. tells us in the last days

  390. he's spoken to us

  391. by his son.

  392. And the confession

  393. confirms the sufficiency

  394. of scripture.

  395. The whole counsel of God

  396. concerning everything

  397. essential

  398. for his own glory

  399. in man's salvation,

  400. faith, and life

  401. is either explicitly stated

  402. or by necessary inference

  403. contained

  404. in the holy scriptures.

  405. In the words

  406. of H.A.W. Tozer,

  407. now the blessed fact

  408. is that God

  409. is not silent

  410. and has never been silent

  411. but is speaking

  412. in his universe.

  413. the written word

  414. is effective because

  415. and only because

  416. the living word

  417. is speaking in heaven

  418. and the living voice

  419. is sounding

  420. throughout the earth.

  421. Because God

  422. has spoken

  423. decisively in Christ

  424. and continues

  425. to speak

  426. through his word,

  427. his apparent silence

  428. is never absolute silence.

  429. And because God

  430. has spoken decisively

  431. in Christ

  432. and continues

  433. to speak

  434. through his word,

  435. his apparent silence

  436. is never absolute silence.

  437. David keeps praying.

  438. God's apparent silence

  439. doesn't stop his prayers.

  440. He lifts his hands

  441. towards the sanctuary

  442. and today

  443. we lift our eyes

  444. to Christ,

  445. our true mercy seat.

  446. Don't stop praying

  447. when God seems silent.

  448. Even when your words fail,

  449. the Holy Spirit

  450. intercedes for you.

  451. In the same way,

  452. the Spirit also helps us

  453. in our weakness

  454. because we do not know

  455. what to pray for

  456. as we should,

  457. but the Spirit himself

  458. intercedes for us

  459. with inexpressible groanings.

  460. God hears your pleading

  461. even when his answer

  462. has not yet come.

  463. Sometimes he teaches us

  464. to trust his promises

  465. rather than our feelings.

  466. Sometimes he never

  467. tells us why.

  468. Yet persistent prayer

  469. raises another question.

  470. If God still seems silent,

  471. how do I know

  472. he hasn't rejected me?

  473. David answers that fear

  474. in verses 3-5.

  475. His greatest concern

  476. is not merely

  477. escaping danger,

  478. but belonging

  479. to the people of God.

  480. So our third anger,

  481. when God seems silent,

  482. remember that you

  483. belong to him.

  484. When God seems silent,

  485. remember that you

  486. belong to him.

  487. David now turns

  488. to one of the hardest

  489. realities of a waiting season,

  490. the wicked.

  491. He doesn't want to be

  492. counted among the wicked.

  493. Do not drag me away

  494. from the wicked,

  495. the evildoers,

  496. who speak in friendly ways

  497. to their neighbors

  498. while malice is in their hearts.

  499. Repay them according

  500. to what they've done,

  501. according to the evil

  502. of their deeds.

  503. Repay them according

  504. to the work of their hands.

  505. Give them back

  506. what they deserve

  507. because they do not

  508. consider what the Lord

  509. has done

  510. or the work of his hands.

  511. He will tear them down

  512. and rebuild them.

  513. That word of drag me away

  514. is like being dragged away

  515. for execution.

  516. The wicked person

  517. David describes

  518. as friendly to your face

  519. while harboring malice

  520. in their heart.

  521. We can't really know

  522. for certain

  523. when David wrote this psalm.

  524. Some think it was

  525. when he was fleeing

  526. from Saul.

  527. Some think it was

  528. when he was sick.

  529. Some think it was

  530. when he had a temptation

  531. that he had to flee

  532. and not be called

  533. with the wicked.

  534. Many commentators

  535. think this fits

  536. with the rebellion

  537. of Absalom.

  538. I kind of feel that too.

  539. John Phillips,

  540. commentator,

  541. connects this psalm

  542. with David's pain.

  543. David's world

  544. was falling apart.

  545. His own son,

  546. his beloved,

  547. handsome Absalom,

  548. had stolen the hearts

  549. of the men of Israel.

  550. David's throne,

  551. which had seemed

  552. so strong

  553. and invincible,

  554. had been snatched from him.

  555. The nation

  556. had turned against him.

  557. The fickle crowd

  558. had hailed Absalom

  559. as though he were

  560. the Messiah.

  561. David's world collapsed

  562. and he turned to Jehovah,

  563. the one who is that

  564. which his people need.

  565. He appeals to him

  566. as my rock.

  567. Now David wasn't

  568. seeking personal vengeance.

  569. he's entrusting

  570. justice to God.

  571. Rather than taking matters

  572. into his own hands,

  573. he asked the righteous judge

  574. to do what is right.

  575. The wicked ignore

  576. the work of the Lord's hands

  577. so the Lord will tear them down.

  578. As Romans 120 says,

  579. the wicked have no excuse

  580. since God's invisible attributes,

  581. that is,

  582. his eternal power

  583. and divine nature,

  584. have been clearly seen

  585. since the creation

  586. of the world.

  587. And Psalm 19

  588. tells us,

  589. the heavens declare

  590. the glory of God

  591. and the sky above

  592. proclaims his handiwork.

  593. Day to day

  594. pours out speech

  595. and night to night

  596. reveals knowledge.

  597. There is no speech

  598. nor are there words

  599. whose voice

  600. is not heard.

  601. Their voice goes out

  602. through all the earth

  603. and their words

  604. to the end of the world.

  605. David fears

  606. being swept away

  607. with the wicked

  608. since it seems like

  609. God is silent.

  610. But David's deepest fear

  611. is not dying,

  612. but sharing in the judgment

  613. reserved for those

  614. who reject God.

  615. David's not claiming

  616. he's sinless.

  617. He's appealing

  618. as one who belongs

  619. to the covenant Lord

  620. rather than the company

  621. of the wicked.

  622. As believers,

  623. we have an anchor.

  624. We are God's

  625. adopted children.

  626. Because we are

  627. united to Christ,

  628. we will never

  629. be swept away

  630. with the wicked.

  631. Our comfort is

  632. we belong to God.

  633. Our confession

  634. reassures the believer

  635. in the chapter

  636. on adoption.

  637. God has granted

  638. that all those

  639. who are justified

  640. would receive

  641. the grace

  642. of adoption

  643. in and for

  644. the sake

  645. of his only son

  646. Jesus Christ.

  647. by this

  648. they are counted

  649. among the children

  650. of God

  651. and enjoy the freedom

  652. and privileges

  653. of that relationship.

  654. They inherit his name,

  655. receive the spirit

  656. of adoption,

  657. have access

  658. to the throne

  659. of grace

  660. with boldness,

  661. and are enabled

  662. to cry,

  663. Abba, Father.

  664. They are given

  665. compassion,

  666. protected,

  667. provided for,

  668. and chastened

  669. by him as a father.

  670. Yet,

  671. they are never

  672. cast off,

  673. but are sealed

  674. for the day

  675. of redemption

  676. and inherit

  677. the promises

  678. of heirs

  679. of everlasting

  680. salvation.

  681. No matter

  682. how dark

  683. the season

  684. seems,

  685. if you belong

  686. to Christ,

  687. you will always

  688. remain God's

  689. child.

  690. His silence

  691. does not cancel

  692. your adoption.

  693. The psalm

  694. also points

  695. forward to Christ.

  696. James Johnston

  697. writes in his

  698. commentary,

  699. When we look

  700. forward to Christ,

  701. though,

  702. we can see

  703. clearly how

  704. the psalm

  705. points to him.

  706. As a human

  707. being,

  708. Jesus had a good

  709. reason to plead

  710. with God,

  711. do not drag me

  712. off with the

  713. wicked.

  714. Jesus was

  715. publicly accused

  716. of being evil

  717. himself.

  718. Many lumped

  719. him together

  720. with the wicked.

  721. Jesus counted

  722. on God,

  723. Caesar to spin,

  724. and the smears

  725. to judge rightly,

  726. to clear his name,

  727. and to show

  728. the difference

  729. between him

  730. and the wicked.

  731. Think of the

  732. false accusations

  733. that were leveled

  734. against Jesus

  735. during his life.

  736. He was accused

  737. of being a glutton

  738. and an alcoholic,

  739. a friend of tax

  740. collectors and

  741. prostitutes.

  742. The Pharisees

  743. accused him

  744. of being demon

  745. possessed.

  746. When he was

  747. arrested,

  748. they came looking

  749. for him with

  750. swords and clubs

  751. as if he were

  752. a robber.

  753. At his trial,

  754. they accused

  755. him of blasphemy

  756. and beat him

  757. as a heretic.

  758. When they turned

  759. him over to Pilate,

  760. they charged

  761. him with a rebellion.

  762. These false

  763. accusations came

  764. to head at the

  765. cross.

  766. Waiting is even

  767. harder when evil

  768. seems to flourish.

  769. David saw that

  770. with Absalom's

  771. rebellion.

  772. Jesus endured

  773. it perfectly as

  774. sinful people

  775. mocked and

  776. crucified him.

  777. but because of

  778. adoption,

  779. we are counted

  780. among the

  781. children of God.

  782. That assurance

  783. affects everything.

  784. David's circumstances

  785. have not changed,

  786. but his confidence

  787. has.

  788. The man who

  789. began with

  790. desperation now

  791. begins to praise.

  792. David moves

  793. from remembering

  794. that he belongs

  795. to God

  796. to praising

  797. the God

  798. who has heard

  799. him.

  800. Our fourth

  801. thanker,

  802. when God

  803. seems silent,

  804. praise him

  805. that he hears

  806. your plea.

  807. When God

  808. seems silent,

  809. praise him

  810. that he hears

  811. your plea.

  812. Now something

  813. remarkable happens

  814. in verse 6.

  815. Nothing in

  816. the psalm

  817. indicates David's

  818. situation is any

  819. different.

  820. David's enemies

  821. are still there.

  822. His throne has

  823. not been restored.

  824. Nothing visible

  825. has changed.

  826. But what has

  827. changed is David

  828. and worship

  829. breaks out.

  830. Spurgeon

  831. observed,

  832. Lord,

  833. our psalm

  834. has been

  835. prayer up

  836. to this

  837. point,

  838. but now

  839. it turns

  840. to praise.

  841. Those who

  842. pray well

  843. will soon

  844. praise well.

  845. Notice the

  846. shift in

  847. verse 6.

  848. The psalm

  849. has moved

  850. from second

  851. person

  852. plea,

  853. you,

  854. O Lord,

  855. to third

  856. person

  857. praise,

  858. blessed

  859. be the

  860. Lord.

  861. Verse 6

  862. is the

  863. answer to

  864. verse 2.

  865. Verse 2

  866. said,

  867. listen to the

  868. sound of my

  869. pleading when

  870. I cry to you

  871. for help.

  872. But in

  873. verses 6

  874. and 7,

  875. the plea

  876. becomes trust.

  877. Blessed be

  878. the Lord,

  879. for he

  880. has heard

  881. the sound

  882. of my

  883. pleading.

  884. The Lord

  885. is my

  886. strength

  887. and my

  888. shield.

  889. My heart

  890. trusts in him

  891. and I am

  892. helped.

  893. Therefore,

  894. my heart

  895. celebrates

  896. and I give

  897. thanks to him

  898. with my

  899. song.

  900. The

  901. greatest

  902. evidence

  903. that God's

  904. silence

  905. is not

  906. rejection,

  907. is that

  908. David moves

  909. from do

  910. not be

  911. deaf to

  912. me to

  913. he has

  914. heard the

  915. sound of

  916. my

  917. pleading.

  918. The

  919. turning

  920. point of

  921. this

  922. psalm

  923. is not

  924. a change

  925. in David's

  926. circumstances,

  927. but a

  928. change in

  929. David's

  930. confidence.

  931. Again,

  932. the turning

  933. point is

  934. not a

  935. change in

  936. David's

  937. circumstances,

  938. but a

  939. change in

  940. David's

  941. confidence.

  942. David's

  943. praise is

  944. not based

  945. on

  946. visible

  947. deliverance,

  948. but on

  949. faith that

  950. God has

  951. heard.

  952. Often,

  953. the first

  954. answer God

  955. gives is

  956. not a

  957. change in

  958. our

  959. situation,

  960. but renewed

  961. trust in

  962. his character.

  963. Isaiah 50

  964. says,

  965. Who among

  966. you fears

  967. the Lord

  968. and listens

  969. to his

  970. servant?

  971. Who among

  972. you walks

  973. in darkness

  974. and has

  975. no light?

  976. Let him

  977. trust in

  978. the name

  979. of the

  980. Lord.

  981. Let him

  982. lean on

  983. his God.

  984. And

  985. Psalm 13,

  986. but I

  987. have

  988. trusted

  989. in

  990. your

  991. faithful

  992. love.

  993. My

  994. heart

  995. will

  996. rejoice

  997. in

  998. your

  999. deliverance.

  1000. I

  1001. will

  1002. sing

  1003. to the

  1004. Lord

  1005. because

  1006. he

  1007. has

  1008. treated

  1009. me

  1010. generously.

  1011. Our

  1012. confession

  1013. says in

  1014. chapter

  1015. 22,

  1016. prayer

  1017. with

  1018. thanksgiving

  1019. is an

  1020. element of

  1021. natural

  1022. worship

  1023. and is

  1024. so required

  1025. by God

  1026. of

  1027. everyone.

  1028. God's

  1029. silence

  1030. is often

  1031. not

  1032. refusal,

  1033. but

  1034. delay.

  1035. scripture

  1036. repeatedly

  1037. shows God

  1038. answering

  1039. in his

  1040. timing

  1041. rather than

  1042. ours.

  1043. David

  1044. learned that

  1045. the God

  1046. who seemed

  1047. silent was

  1048. actually

  1049. working.

  1050. Even when

  1051. we don't

  1052. have the

  1053. feeling,

  1054. we still

  1055. have the

  1056. fact and

  1057. we respond

  1058. with praise.

  1059. Once David

  1060. is convinced

  1061. God has

  1062. heard him,

  1063. his focus

  1064. shifts from

  1065. himself to

  1066. God's

  1067. people.

  1068. David's

  1069. confidence

  1070. overflows

  1071. into

  1072. intercession.

  1073. His

  1074. prayer for

  1075. God's

  1076. people

  1077. ultimately

  1078. points us

  1079. to the

  1080. greater

  1081. king

  1082. whose

  1083. intercession

  1084. never

  1085. ceases.

  1086. Our

  1087. fifth

  1088. anchor,

  1089. when God

  1090. seems

  1091. silent,

  1092. know that

  1093. Christ is

  1094. praying for

  1095. you.

  1096. When God

  1097. seems silent,

  1098. know that

  1099. Christ is

  1100. praying for

  1101. you.

  1102. Look at

  1103. David's

  1104. prayer in

  1105. verses 8 and

  1106. 9.

  1107. The Lord

  1108. is the

  1109. strength of

  1110. his people.

  1111. He is a

  1112. stronghold of

  1113. salvation for

  1114. this

  1115. anointed.

  1116. Save your

  1117. people,

  1118. bless your

  1119. possession,

  1120. shepherd them,

  1121. and carry

  1122. them forever.

  1123. Having been

  1124. assured that

  1125. God hears

  1126. him, David

  1127. now prays

  1128. for others.

  1129. He turns

  1130. from praying

  1131. for himself

  1132. to praying

  1133. for his

  1134. people.

  1135. David ends

  1136. not with

  1137. save me,

  1138. but save

  1139. your people.

  1140. Now one

  1141. of Satan's

  1142. strategies during

  1143. these periods

  1144. of waiting

  1145. and darkness

  1146. is to

  1147. convince

  1148. believers to

  1149. withdraw from

  1150. God's

  1151. people.

  1152. But David

  1153. finishes by

  1154. identifying

  1155. himself with

  1156. the flock.

  1157. The shepherd

  1158. often carries

  1159. struggling sheep

  1160. through the

  1161. ministry of

  1162. the church.

  1163. Don't

  1164. mistake

  1165. spiritual dryness

  1166. for permission

  1167. to neglect

  1168. scripture,

  1169. prayer,

  1170. gathered

  1171. worship,

  1172. or the

  1173. Lord's

  1174. table.

  1175. Those are

  1176. actually

  1177. often the

  1178. very means

  1179. God uses

  1180. to sustain

  1181. his people

  1182. while they

  1183. wait.

  1184. The confession

  1185. reminds us of

  1186. the means of

  1187. grace that God

  1188. has provided to

  1189. help us in the

  1190. times of waiting.

  1191. the elements of

  1192. religious worship

  1193. of God include

  1194. reading the

  1195. scriptures,

  1196. preaching and

  1197. hearing the

  1198. word of God,

  1199. teaching and

  1200. admonishing one

  1201. another in

  1202. psalms,

  1203. hymns,

  1204. and spiritual

  1205. songs,

  1206. singing with

  1207. grace in our

  1208. hearts to the

  1209. Lord,

  1210. as well as

  1211. the ministration

  1212. of baptism

  1213. and the

  1214. Lord's

  1215. supper.

  1216. Eric Lane

  1217. helps us look

  1218. forward to

  1219. Christ in this

  1220. psalm when he

  1221. writes,

  1222. If the

  1223. Lord were

  1224. David's

  1225. strength,

  1226. my rock,

  1227. verse 1,

  1228. he would be

  1229. the strength

  1230. of his

  1231. people.

  1232. So he

  1233. ends by

  1234. praying for

  1235. them,

  1236. for God to

  1237. save and

  1238. bless and

  1239. carry them

  1240. as a

  1241. shepherd.

  1242. Here the

  1243. psalm becomes

  1244. messianic,

  1245. for the

  1246. anointed one

  1247. is literally

  1248. Messiah,

  1249. the one

  1250. whose office

  1251. was to

  1252. save and

  1253. bless those

  1254. who God

  1255. gave him as

  1256. his inheritance,

  1257. the good

  1258. shepherd who

  1259. would give

  1260. his life

  1261. for the

  1262. sheep.

  1263. In

  1264. verses 8

  1265. and 9,

  1266. David is

  1267. praying for

  1268. his people,

  1269. and as he

  1270. does, the

  1271. language of

  1272. anointed one

  1273. and shepherd

  1274. begins to

  1275. point us,

  1276. on David,

  1277. to Christ.

  1278. David's

  1279. speaking first

  1280. of the

  1281. Lord's

  1282. anointed

  1283. king,

  1284. but these

  1285. words find

  1286. their ultimate

  1287. fulfillment in

  1288. Christ,

  1289. God's true

  1290. anointed one

  1291. and good

  1292. shepherd.

  1293. Jesus said

  1294. in John

  1295. 10,

  1296. I am the

  1297. good shepherd.

  1298. Isaiah

  1299. 40,

  1300. he protects

  1301. his flock

  1302. like a

  1303. shepherd.

  1304. He

  1305. gathers

  1306. the

  1307. lambs in

  1308. his arms

  1309. and carries

  1310. them in

  1311. the fold

  1312. of his

  1313. garment.

  1314. He

  1315. gently

  1316. leads

  1317. those who

  1318. are

  1319. nursing.

  1320. Even

  1321. when our

  1322. prayers

  1323. falter,

  1324. even when

  1325. God seems

  1326. silent,

  1327. the

  1328. Messiah and

  1329. shepherd

  1330. prays

  1331. perfectly

  1332. for us.

  1333. Romans

    Romans 8:34

  1334. 8,

  1335. verse 34

  1336. reminds

  1337. us,

  1338. who's

  1339. the one

  1340. who

  1341. condemns?

  1342. Christ

  1343. Jesus

  1344. is the

  1345. one

  1346. who

  1347. died,

  1348. but even

  1349. more,

  1350. has been

  1351. raised.

  1352. He also

  1353. is the

  1354. right hand

  1355. of God

  1356. and intercedes

  1357. for us.

  1358. And

  1359. Hebrews

  1360. 7,

  1361. 25

  1362. said,

  1363. therefore

  1364. he is

  1365. able to

  1366. save

  1367. completely

  1368. those

  1369. who come

  1370. to God

  1371. through

  1372. him,

  1373. since he

  1374. always

  1375. lives to

  1376. intercede

  1377. for them.

  1378. Our

  1379. confession

  1380. has a

  1381. chapter on

  1382. Christ's

  1383. intercession,

  1384. Christ the

  1385. mediator.

  1386. To all

  1387. those whom

  1388. Christ has

  1389. obtained

  1390. eternal

  1391. redemption,

  1392. he certainly

  1393. and effectively

  1394. applies and

  1395. imparts it.

  1396. He

  1397. intercedes

  1398. for them,

  1399. unites

  1400. them to

  1401. himself by

  1402. his spirit,

  1403. and reveals

  1404. to them in

  1405. and by his

  1406. word the

  1407. mystery of

  1408. salvation.

  1409. He

  1410. persuades

  1411. them to

  1412. believe and

  1413. obey and

  1414. governs their

  1415. heart by

  1416. his word

  1417. and spirit.

  1418. And

  1419. Jesus

  1420. declared in

  1421. John 17,

  1422. I pray not

  1423. only for

  1424. these,

  1425. the disciples

  1426. around him,

  1427. but also for

  1428. those who

  1429. believe in

  1430. me through

  1431. their word.

  1432. Louis

  1433. Burkups

  1434. observed,

  1435. it is

  1436. a consoling

  1437. thought that

  1438. Christ is

  1439. praying for

  1440. us,

  1441. even when

  1442. we are

  1443. negligent in

  1444. our prayer

  1445. life,

  1446. that he

  1447. is presenting

  1448. to the

  1449. Father those

  1450. spiritual needs

  1451. which were

  1452. not present

  1453. to our

  1454. minds,

  1455. and which

  1456. we often

  1457. neglect to

  1458. include in

  1459. our prayers,

  1460. and that

  1461. he prays for

  1462. our protection

  1463. against the

  1464. dangers of

  1465. which we

  1466. are not even

  1467. conscious,

  1468. against the

  1469. enemies which

  1470. threaten us,

  1471. though we

  1472. don't even

  1473. notice it.

  1474. He is

  1475. praying that

  1476. our faith

  1477. may not

  1478. cease,

  1479. that we

  1480. may come

  1481. out

  1482. victoriously

  1483. in the

  1484. end.

  1485. I love

  1486. how Robert

  1487. Murray

  1488. McShane

  1489. put it,

  1490. but

  1491. if I

  1492. could hear

  1493. Christ

  1494. praying for

  1495. me in

  1496. the next

  1497. room,

  1498. I would

  1499. not fear

  1500. a million

  1501. enemies,

  1502. yet distance

  1503. makes no

  1504. difference.

  1505. He is

  1506. praying for

  1507. me.

  1508. If I

  1509. could hear

  1510. Christ

  1511. praying for

  1512. me in

  1513. the next

  1514. room,

  1515. I would

  1516. not fear

  1517. a million

  1518. enemies,

  1519. yet distance

  1520. makes no

  1521. difference.

  1522. He is

  1523. praying for

  1524. me.

1525. what comfort for the believer

1526. the savior who died for us

1527. now lives to intercede for us

  1528. ultimately

  1529. David's distress

1530. foreshadows the stress of the Lord

  1531. Jesus Christ to cry

1532. my God my God why have you abandoned me

  1533. Hebrews

1534. tells us that Jesus was heard because of

  1535. his reverence

1536. Jesus was not spared the cross

1537. but was delivered through death

  1538. in the resurrection

1539. Hebrews 5 7 during his thirsty life

1540. he offered prayers and appeals

1541. with loud cries and tears

1542. to the one who was able to save him from death

1543. and he was heard because of his reverence

  1544. again Christopher Ash

  1545. helps us see Jesus

  1546. therefore

1547. we must meditate on what it means

  1548. for Jesus of Nazareth

1549. to pray with loud cries and tears

  1550. in Psalm 28 1 and 2

  1551. to speak

  1552. in 28 3 through 5

  1553. with horror

  1554. yet confidence

1555. and to exalt with the resurrection joy

1556. that was set before him in 28 6 and 7

1557. it is a healthy discipline

1558. quietly to walk with our savior in his trials

1559. in the eyes of our mind

1560. and in the affections of our hearts

  1561. on the cross

  1562. Jesus truly experienced

1563. the horror of bearing our sin

  1564. and expressed the abandonment

  1565. of Psalm 22

  1566. yet the eternal unity

1567. of the Father and the Son

  1568. was never broken

  1569. Jesus endured the curse

  1570. we deserve

1571. so that we would never

  1572. finally be persecuted

1573. so what do believers do

  1574. when God seems silent?

1575. they trust the rock beneath them

  1576. they keep praying

  1577. they remember

1578. that they belong to God

  1579. they praise God

1580. before they see God's answer

  1581. and they rest

  1582. in Christ's intercession

1583. the silence may last longer

  1584. than your hope

1585. but it will not last forever

  1586. one day

  1587. our faith

  1588. will be sight

  1589. Psalm 28

  1590. begins with a cry

1591. do not be deaf to me

  1592. it ends with confidence

  1593. save your people

  1594. bless your possessions

  1595. shepherd them

  1596. and carry them forever

  1597. David begins

  1598. fearing the pit

  1599. and ends up

  1600. resting in the shepherd

  1601. that's what God does

  1602. for his people

  1603. not always quickly

  1604. not always visibly

  1605. but always faithfully

1606. again look at verse 6 and 7

  1607. blessed be the Lord

  1608. for he has heard

1609. the sound of my pleading

1610. the Lord is my strength

  1611. and my shield

1612. my heart trusts in him

  1613. and I am help

  1614. he has heard

  1615. and I am helped

  1616. he has heard

  1617. and I am helped

  1618. beloved

  1619. perhaps today

  1620. you can't say

  1621. I am helped

1622. maybe all you can say is

  1623. hey Lord

1624. I still call to you

  1625. hold fast

1626. Christ will hold you fast

  1627. he is your stronghold

  1628. and your shepherd

1629. the father who adopted you

  1630. has not abandoned you

1631. he will carry you forever

1632. the shepherd who died for you

  1633. still intercedes for you

  1634. the rock beneath you

1635. is firmer than your feelings

  1636. and one day

  1637. by God's grace

1638. you will say with David

  1639. he has heard

  1640. and I am helped

  1641. as Psalm 27 ended

  1642. it said

  1643. I am certain

1644. that I will see the Lord's goodness

1645. in the land of the living

  1646. wait for the Lord

  1647. be strong

1648. and let your heart be courageous

  1649. wait for the Lord

  1650. let's pray

  1651. Father

  1652. thank you that

1653. even when you seem silent

  1654. you are never absent

  1655. be our rock

1656. when we feel like we are sinking

  1657. teach us to pray

  1658. with believing hands

  1659. lifted to Jesus

  1660. our mercy seat

  1661. remind us daily

1662. that we are your children

  1663. strengthen us

  1664. by our spirit

1665. and when the silence breaks

  1666. may our hearts overflow

  1667. with fresh praise

1668. in the name of Jesus

  1669. our intercession

  1670. and shepherd

  1671. we pray

  1672. amen

  1673. amen

  1674. amen

  1675. amen

  1676. amen

  1677. amen

  1678. Thank you.
