  1. As I read Psalm 31 aloud, I invite you to follow along with your own eyes.

  2. And then to keep this open in front of you as we work through so that you can see the word of God, the verses,

  3. and that the Spirit can minister to all of us because we trust it's his inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear, powerful,

  4. and all-sufficient word for you and me, his people.

  5. Psalm 31.

  6. To the chief musician.

  7. A Psalm of David.

  8. In you, O Lord, I put my trust.

  9. Let me never be ashamed.

  10. Deliver me in your righteousness.

  11. Bow down your ear to hear me.

  12. Deliver me speedily.

  13. Be my rock of refuge, a fortress of defense to save me.

  14. For you are my rock and my fortress.

  15. Therefore, for your namesake, lead me and guide me.

  16. Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me.

  17. For you are my strength.

  18. Into your hand I commit my spirit.

  19. You have redeemed me.

  20. You have redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth.

  21. I have hated those who regarded useless idols.

  22. But I will trust in the Lord.

  23. I will be glad and rejoice in your mercy.

  24. For you have considered my trouble.

  25. And you have known my soul and adversities.

  26. And have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy.

  27. You have set my feet in a wide place.

  28. Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble.

  29. My eye wastes away with grief.

  30. Yes, my soul and my body.

  31. For my life is spent with grief.

  32. And my years with sighing.

  33. My strength fails because of my iniquity.

  34. And my bones waste away.

  35. I am a reproach among all my enemies.

  36. But especially among my neighbors.

  37. And I am repulsive to my acquaintances.

  38. Those who see me outside flee from me.

  39. I am forgotten like a dead man.

  40. Out of mind.

  41. I am like a broken vessel.

  42. For I hear the slander of many.

  43. Fear is on every side.

  44. While they take counsel together against me.

  45. They scheme to take away my life.

  46. But as for me, I trust in you, O Lord.

  47. I say you are my God.

  48. My times are in your hand.

  49. Deliver me from the hands of my enemies.

  50. And from those who persecute me.

  51. Make your face shine upon your servant.

  52. Save me for your mercy's sake.

  53. Do not let me be ashamed, O Lord.

  54. For I have called upon you.

  55. Let the wicked be ashamed.

  56. Let them be silent in the grave.

  57. Let the lying lips be put to silence.

  58. Which speak insolent things proudly.

  59. And contemptuously against the righteous.

  60. O how great is your goodness.

  61. Which you have laid up for those who fear you.

  62. Which you have prepared for those who trust in you.

  63. In the presence of the sons of men.

  64. You shall hide them in the secret place of your presence.

  65. From the plots of man.

  66. You shall keep them secretly.

  67. In a pavilion from the strife of tongues.

  68. Blessed be the Lord.

  69. For he has shown his marvelous kindness in a strong city.

  70. For I said in my haste.

  71. I am cut off before your eyes.

  72. Nevertheless you heard the voice of my supplications.

  73. When I cried to you.

  74. Oh love the Lord all you his saints.

  75. For the Lord preserves the faithful.

  76. And fully repays the proud person.

  77. Be of good courage.

  78. And he shall strengthen your heart.

  79. All you who hope in the Lord.

  80. The word of God for the people of God.

  81. Thanks be to God.

  82. Please be seated.

  83. Oh Lord we thank you for your word.

  84. That's living and active and sharp.

  85. We pray that by the power of your Holy Spirit.

  86. Your word will pierce into us Lord.

  87. That you'll divide the innermost part of us.

  88. That by cutting us open with your word Lord.

  89. The seed of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  90. Will find good soil.

  91. And that it will bear much fruit in our lives.

  92. So that you will be glorified.

  93. And your kind mercy will be made known to all.

  94. Through the lives of your people.

  95. Whom you've redeemed.

  96. By your grace alone.

  97. For your glory alone we ask.

  98. Amen.

  99. Amen.

  100. Well prayer is a window into a person's soul.

  101. When a person's praying.

  102. We get to hear through their words.

  103. The thoughts.

  104. The meditations.

  105. The beliefs of their innermost being.

  106. Even after suffering through a day of conflict with a loved one.

  107. After our frustrations may have reached a boiling point with one another.

  108. Isn't it true in our experience that.

  109. If we can just hear.

  110. One another pray.

  111. The grace of God has a way of melting the ice.

  112. Prayer brings us around the foot of the cross of Jesus.

  113. And we see.

  114. Our Lord Jesus Christ.

  115. Working like.

  116. 360 degrees.

  117. Around his cross.

  118. Because prayer.

  119. It reveals our views of God.

  120. It reveals our views of ourselves.

  121. And of one another.

  122. In the light of God's glory.

  123. In prayer we can.

  124. Confess our weakness.

  125. In prayer we.

  126. We confess our struggles.

  127. And our fears.

  128. But also through prayer.

  129. We.

  130. We find our hope.

  131. We remind one another.

  132. To trust in God.

  133. Prayer is a window.

  134. Into the soul.

  135. Psalm 31.

  136. Is not only.

  137. What some have called.

  138. An exquisite.

  139. Masterpiece.

  140. Of Hebrew poetry.

  141. It's that.

  142. But it's more.

  143. Psalm 31.

  144. Is a prayer.

  145. It's the prayer of a king.

  146. And we get to listen in.

  147. By the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

  148. These words that David prays to God.

  149. Are recorded.

  150. And preserved for us.

  151. And we get a window.

  152. Into the soul of this anointed man.

  153. Who's really a shadow.

  154. Of the anointed king.

  155. Jesus Christ.

  156. As we walk through this.

  157. Psalm.

  158. Verse by verse.

  159. You'll get to hear.

  160. One more time.

  161. This king's fears.

  162. And struggles.

  163. The king's view of God.

  164. View of himself.

  165. And you'll be encouraged.

  166. By what his trust.

  167. And his hope.

  168. Are anchored in.

  169. So my encouragement is.

  170. Hear the prayer.

  171. Of this king.

  172. And may God melt your heart.

  173. My sermon title is.

  174. What the king's prayer.

  175. Reveals.

  176. What the king's prayer.

  177. Reveals.

  178. And I'd like to point out.

  179. Four glorious truths.

  180. In this psalm.

  181. Number one.

  182. The king's prayer.

  183. Reveals.

  184. The grounds.

  185. That God has laid.

  186. For our pleas.

  187. To him.

  188. This king's prayer.

  189. Reveals.

  190. The grounds.

  191. That God has laid down.

  192. Upon which he'll accept.

  193. Please.

  194. Request.

  195. From us.

  196. In this psalm 31.

  197. David's having to exercise faith.

  198. He's trusting.

  199. In what he cannot see.

  200. Look at verse one.

  201. In you oh Lord.

  202. I put my trust.

  203. God is spirit.

  204. God is invisible.

  205. But he puts his trust.

  206. In the Lord.

  207. And he says.

  208. Let me never be ashamed.

  209. There's a threat.

  210. There's.

  211. There's a very real threat.

  212. That he will be ashamed.

  213. According to what he can see.

  214. That's his fear.

  215. He's trapped.

  216. And he's in need.

  217. So he cries out in verse one.

  218. Deliver me.

  219. And he says.

  220. Deliver me.

  221. In your righteousness.

  222. The basis for his faith.

  223. His hope.

  224. His trust.

  225. It's in the character.

  226. Of the Lord.

  227. To put it another way.

  228. He's praying.

  229. Lord.

  230. Because you are righteous.

  231. Deliver me.

  232. This is the ground.

  233. God has laid.

  234. To hear our.

  235. Our pleas.

  236. Because God is righteous.

  237. Psalm 31.

  238. Teaches God's people.

  239. To trust.

  240. That God does.

  241. Care about you.

  242. God does.

  243. Draw near.

  244. God does.

  245. Hear it.

  246. When we cry out.

  247. To him.

  248. That's what he prays.

  249. Next in verse two.

  250. Look at it.

  251. Bow down your ear.

  252. To me.

  253. Deliver me.

  254. Speedily.

  255. In our Bible study.

  256. One of our.

  257. Our moms.

  258. Pointed out.

  259. It's like a parent.

  260. You know.

  261. The child.

  262. Is crying.

  263. The parent.

  264. Draws near.

  265. And bows the ear down.

  266. Close to him.

  267. To hear.

  268. To show you.

  269. I see you.

  270. I hear you.

  271. I care about you.

  272. I'm near to you.

  273. And his trust in God.

  274. Is pictured now.

  275. Next with.

  276. With two images.

  277. They're parallel.

  278. One to another.

  279. These are both.

  280. Beautiful.

  281. Powerful.

  282. Encouraging pictures for us.

  283. Even though we don't live in.

  284. In the ancient.

  285. Near east.

  286. And we don't.

  287. We don't have to deal with.

  288. Siege warfare.

  289. Which was brutal.

  290. The two images.

  291. Next are these.

  292. Number one.

  293. It's a rock.

  294. Of refuge.

  295. A rock.

  296. Of refuge.

  297. And number two.

  298. What he calls.

  299. A fortress.

  300. Of defense.

  301. To picture.

  302. Rock of refuge.

  303. You're visiting from Texas.

  304. If you have time this afternoon.

  305. You could get there.

  306. I think it's in under.

  307. 90 minutes.

  308. Down in El Paso County.

  309. Paint.

  310. Mines.

  311. Regional park.

  312. It's a regional park.

  313. And you can go down.

  314. And you can see where the erosion.

  315. Maybe some of the ancient.

  316. From the flood.

  317. It's left these deep.

  318. Caves and tunnels.

  319. And created all these beautiful layers.

  320. In the rock.

  321. And you can just picture an army.

  322. Trying to chase down a man.

  323. Or his.

  324. His army.

  325. Scurrying away.

  326. And finding.

  327. Shelter.

  328. Hiding.

  329. In these rocks.

  330. Of refuge.

  331. Remember how David had to call these caves.

  332. He had to call them home.

  333. In Psalm 4.

  334. He laid down his head.

  335. To sleep at night.

  336. While he's on the run.

  337. And he's in hiding.

  338. From King Saul.

  339. Remember he had that fortress.

  340. It was.

  341. It was a natural fortress.

  342. That God provided him.

  343. Called En Gedi.

  344. Down in southern part of Israel.

  345. And that's where the Lord preserved him.

  346. So a rock of refuge.

  347. For David.

  348. Brings all these.

  349. Very real images.

  350. Of survival.

  351. And finding a place.

  352. To hide himself.

  353. When the blistering sun.

  354. Is out there.

  355. And it's scorching everything.

  356. You can get in the shade.

  357. You can find protection.

  358. That's a rock of refuge.

  359. The second one is the fortress.

  360. Of defense.

  361. We're so blessed.

  362. We live in Colorado.

  363. All these images of.

  364. The.

  365. Of Israel.

  366. In ancient Israel.

  367. We have them right here.

  368. The best one for me.

  369. Thinking of a.

  370. This fortress of defense.

  371. Would be like when you hike up.

  372. To see a.

  373. A fire lookout.

  374. You know.

  375. You'll go up a trail.

  376. You'll.

  377. You'll switch back and forth.

  378. Some of them are above the.

  379. The tree line.

  380. See it's just up there.

  381. In the middle of nowhere.

  382. And.

  383. And here's this little.

  384. In our case.

  385. It's just a little wooden cabin.

  386. But the kingdoms.

  387. In the ancient world.

  388. Had these.

  389. Fortresses.

  390. These garrisons.

  391. Put up on the.

  392. The high points.

  393. Where they can see.

  394. In a long ways away.

  395. So if one of the enemies.

  396. Bring in all their troops.

  397. And trying to flank us.

  398. Or set up.

  399. An attack.

  400. We can get word back quickly.

  401. And we can mobilize.

  402. So you can picture this.

  403. Man-made fortress.

  404. These stones piled up.

  405. Up.

  406. Up on top of a hill.

  407. And if the enemy were to try to get you there.

  408. You have the high ground.

  409. You can shoot arrows back down them.

  410. And you can protect yourself.

  411. From this fortress.

  412. Of defense.

  413. But the order in which David prays this.

  414. It's.

  415. It's different than what we would expect.

  416. There's a unique repetition here.

  417. In verses two and three.

  418. Seems to be backwards.

  419. First he says.

  420. In verse two.

  421. Be.

  422. Be.

  423. My rock of refuge.

  424. Be.

  425. A fortress.

  426. Of defense.

  427. For me.

  428. So it sounds like he's asking God.

  429. To become something new.

  430. But notice.

  431. The very next verse.

  432. Part of this.

  433. This.

  434. Poetic parallelism.

  435. In verse three.

  436. He says.

  437. Be those things.

  438. For you are.

  439. My rock.

  440. And my fortress.

  441. Why ask God.

  442. To become.

  443. Something that you.

  444. Just claimed.

  445. That God is.

  446. I learned.

  447. That.

  448. When.

  449. A weaker.

  450. Party.

  451. Is in a covenant relationship.

  452. In a treaty.

  453. The vassal servant.

  454. In relationship.

  455. To a more powerful.

  456. Sovereign Lord.

  457. You're appealing.

  458. For protection.

  459. You're appealing.

  460. On this covenant.

  461. This treaty.

  462. That you have.

  463. And you do it.

  464. By reminding.

  465. The powerful Lord.

  466. Of their name.

  467. Reminding them.

  468. Of who they said.

  469. They are.

  470. In this covenant.

  471. Relationship.

  472. To you.

  473. So this is a covenantal.

  474. Prayer.

  475. In verses two and three.

  476. Isn't that beautiful?

  477. The poet is saying here.

  478. Act.

  479. Like who you already promised.

  480. To be.

  481. God.

  482. This appeal to God's covenant promises.

  483. Is reinforced.

  484. In the rest of verse three.

  485. Therefore.

  486. For your name's sake.

  487. Lead me.

  488. And guide me.

  489. We can pray this way too.

  490. These are the grounds.

  491. God has laid.

  492. For our pleas.

  493. God has told us.

  494. Here's who I am.

  495. As your Lord.

  496. This is my name.

  497. I am.

  498. Your rock of refuge.

  499. I am.

  500. Your fortress.

  501. Of defense.

  502. Pray to me.

  503. Trusting.

  504. That's who I am.

  505. And that's who I will be.

  506. For you now.

  507. Think of the other.

  508. People all around.

  509. Israel.

  510. They're building up.

  511. Their own fortresses.

  512. They're stacking up.

  513. Stone walls.

  514. They're taking over.

  515. The garrisons.

  516. Of other nations.

  517. And David.

  518. Now is calling the people.

  519. Chief musician.

  520. Get all the congregation.

  521. To sing this truth.

  522. Yahweh.

  523. Is the true rock.

  524. And the true fortress.

  525. All these other things.

  526. That the world.

  527. Put their hope in.

  528. They can be penetrated.

  529. They can be destroyed.

  530. You can dig under those walls.

  531. The Lord.

  532. Is the only one.

  533. That we can count on for safety.

  534. In him alone.

  535. Do we find our security.

  536. The only true.

  537. Unbreachable.

  538. Fortress.

  539. Is the invisible.

  540. Covenant keeping God.

  541. The basis of our faith.

  542. The basis of our hope.

  543. Our trust.

  544. It's the character.

  545. Of the Lord himself.

  546. This psalm teaches us.

  547. To remind God.

  548. Of his covenant promises.

  549. To us.

  550. And to lift up our needs.

  551. Our troubles.

  552. Our cares.

  553. And our fears.

  554. In light of.

  555. Who he is.

  556. We can pray like David.

  557. Lord.

  558. Because you are righteous.

  559. Deliver us.

  560. Lord.

  561. You are caring.

  562. You do draw near.

  563. You do listen.

  564. We can ask you.

  565. In that same way.

  566. Father.

  567. Bow your ear down to me.

  568. Deliver me quickly.

  569. Brothers and sisters.

  570. Reflect.

  571. This week.

  572. Maybe even this morning.

  573. In the weakness of your flesh.

  574. What do you.

  575. Want to put.

  576. Your hope in.

  577. Instead of God.

  578. If God.

  579. If God leaves us to ourselves.

  580. We are so frail.

  581. Aren't we?

  582. What do we want to put our security in.

  583. Besides the Lord.

  584. Remember the psalm.

  585. We sing this.

  586. This hymn.

  587. That echoes.

  588. The truth of this.

  589. Wonderful verse here.

  590. That my hope.

  591. Can be built on nothing.

  592. Less than Jesus blood.

  593. And righteousness.

  594. Anything other than Christ himself.

  595. Is less.

  596. I dare not trust.

  597. The sweetest frame.

  598. No matter how good it looks.

  599. But wholly lean.

  600. On Jesus name.

  601. His oath.

  602. His covenant.

  603. His blood.

  604. Are what support you and me.

  605. In the whelming flood.

  606. When all around.

  607. My soul gives way.

  608. He then.

  609. Is all.

  610. My hope.

  611. And stay.

  612. The king's prayer here.

  613. Reveals the grounds.

  614. God has laid.

  615. For our.

  616. Pleas.

  617. To him.

  618. His oath.

  619. His covenant.

  620. His blood.

  621. We remind God.

  622. Of what he's promised.

  623. And we trust.

  624. That he will be true.

  625. To his word.

  626. The second glorious truth.

  627. We can learn.

  628. Is that the king's prayer here.

  629. Reveals.

  630. The fierceness.

  631. Of the battle.

  632. This is a song of lament.

  633. A song of trouble.

  634. In the king's prayer.

  635. It reveals that.

  636. How fierce the battle is.

  637. That this king.

  638. Has to endure.

  639. In Psalm 31.

  640. David fears for his life.

  641. But who is he afraid of?

  642. You're going to have to.

  643. Jump around with me.

  644. For a few verses here.

  645. Because I want to.

  646. I want to try to make this clear.

  647. I think it's very important.

  648. Who are these enemies of David.

  649. That are threatening his life.

  650. Look at verse 11.

  651. He says.

  652. I am a reproach.

  653. Among all.

  654. My enemies.

  655. Well think of Israel.

  656. Surrounded.

  657. You've got the Phoenicians.

  658. On the north.

  659. You've got the Philistines.

  660. On the south.

  661. You've got Egypt.

  662. To the west.

  663. And then you've got.

  664. Those crazy.

  665. Amalekites.

  666. Just seeming to be.

  667. Everywhere.

  668. In the shadows.

  669. His enemies.

  670. These other nations.

  671. Are all around.

  672. And they worship idols.

  673. But that's not really.

  674. The emphasis on verse 11.

  675. Let's keep reading.

  676. He also says.

  677. I am a reproach.

  678. Notice the emphasis.

  679. I'm a reproach.

  680. Especially.

  681. Among my neighbors.

  682. Within the visible domain.

  683. Of God's kingdom.

  684. On earth.

  685. Within Israel.

  686. I am repulsive.

  687. To my acquaintances.

  688. Those who see me outside.

  689. The word for word.

  690. Is those who see me on the streets.

  691. The streets of Jerusalem.

  692. The streets of Israel.

  693. They flee.

  694. From me.

  695. He says.

  696. But I.

  697. I know why.

  698. Look at verse 6.

  699. Here's the reason.

  700. I have hated those.

  701. Who regard useless idols.

  702. The king has denounced.

  703. The worship of.

  704. Of false gods.

  705. No.

  706. Not within the.

  707. The domain of God.

  708. This cannot happen.

  709. He's denounced it.

  710. He's hated those.

  711. Who have brought.

  712. Idolatry.

  713. Into the kingdom of God.

  714. The phrase here.

  715. Is.

  716. Idol.

  717. Keepers.

  718. I have hated.

  719. Idol.

  720. Keepers.

  721. And then the contrast.

  722. Comes with the rest of verse 6.

  723. But.

  724. He says.

  725. I trust.

  726. In the Lord.

  727. I trust.

  728. Those are the only two options.

  729. You either trust.

  730. In a.

  731. A demon.

  732. Idol.

  733. You're an.

  734. An idol keeper.

  735. Putting your trust in that.

  736. Creaturely invention.

  737. Or you're putting your trust.

  738. In the creator.

  739. There's no two alternatives.

  740. There's no other alternatives.

  741. Besides those two.

  742. Because the king.

  743. God's anointed.

  744. Servant.

  745. Here.

  746. He trusts the Lord.

  747. Instead of idols.

  748. He's hated by those.

  749. Who are keeping those idols.

  750. Both inside the kingdom.

  751. And outside the kingdom.

  752. The ones inside the.

  753. The borders of Israel.

  754. Are supposed to.

  755. Trust in the Lord.

  756. But yet they're harboring.

  757. These pet idols.

  758. And worshiping them.

  759. In their hearts.

  760. Instead.

  761. His neighbors.

  762. Within the.

  763. The same walls.

  764. Are secretly.

  765. Worshiping.

  766. Demons.

  767. Rather than the holy God.

  768. And how is it.

  769. That these.

  770. Idol keepers.

  771. Attack.

  772. God's anointed king.

  773. Look at verse 13.

  774. I hear the slander.

  775. Of many.

  776. What's that like?

  777. Fear.

  778. Is on every side.

  779. While they take counsel.

  780. Against me.

  781. They scheme.

  782. To take.

  783. My life.

  784. Away.

  785. Those who keep demons.

  786. Hate.

  787. God's.

  788. Servants.

  789. Can you put yourself there.

  790. Scheming.

  791. To end your life.

  792. Slander.

  793. Fear.

  794. On every side.

  795. Like their.

  796. Walls are closing in on him.

  797. And.

  798. So.

  799. David's.

  800. And.

  801. So.

  802. David's.

  803. Confession.

  804. Later on.

  805. Is.

  806. Understandable.

  807. Take your eyes down.

  808. To verse 22.

  809. I have said.

  810. In my haste.

  811. I am cut off.

  812. From before.

  813. Your eyes.

  814. David's.

  815. Miserable.

  816. He feels so trapped.

  817. He says.

  818. Look at verse 12.

  819. He says.

  820. I am forgotten.

  821. Like a dead man.

  822. Out of mind.

  823. It's like I don't even exist anymore.

  824. I'm like a broken vessel.

  825. Everything I thought was my life.

  826. Like this clay jar up here.

  827. Has been.

  828. Smashed down on the rocks.

  829. I have no life.

  830. And in that moment.

  831. The Lord ministers to him.

  832. Look at verse 22 again.

  833. Nevertheless.

  834. You heard.

  835. The voice.

  836. Of my supplication.

  837. When I.

  838. Cried.

  839. To you.

  840. He felt like God.

  841. Had cut him off.

  842. He felt like.

  843. God didn't see him anymore.

  844. And by the end of the psalm.

  845. He bears witness.

  846. You heard me.

  847. When I cried.

  848. I asked Lord.

  849. Bend your ear down.

  850. And you did hear my prayer.

  851. Part of his cry.

  852. Is for justice.

  853. Look at verse 17.

  854. Lord this evil.

  855. These.

  856. Idol worshipers.

  857. It's horrible.

  858. How long are you going to let it.

  859. Keep going like this.

  860. In verse 17.

  861. He says.

  862. Do not.

  863. Let me.

  864. Be ashamed.

  865. O Lord.

  866. For I have called.

  867. Upon you.

  868. Let the wicked be ashamed.

  869. Let them be silent.

  870. In the grave.

  871. Let the lying lips.

  872. Be put to silence.

  873. Which speak.

  874. Insolent things.

  875. Proudly.

  876. And contemptuously.

  877. Against.

  878. The righteous.

  879. Father.

  880. Deal with it.

  881. I can't defend myself anymore.

  882. A wise pastor.

  883. A wise pastor.

  884. This was.

  885. This was a while back.

  886. But I remember his words.

  887. He was going through something difficult in their church.

  888. I didn't even know the details exactly of the situation.

  889. And he reflected back on.

  890. On 25 years of ministry.

  891. He says.

  892. What happens in churches.

  893. And in Christian relationships.

  894. Is that.

  895. You open up the word of God.

  896. You read the word of God.

  897. God.

  898. The Holy Spirit communicates.

  899. A spiritual truth.

  900. And the spirit.

  901. Uses his word.

  902. To topple down.

  903. An idol.

  904. That's what God does.

  905. He says.

  906. Even if you.

  907. Communicate.

  908. God's truth.

  909. In the most.

  910. Loving way.

  911. When that truth.

  912. Threatens.

  913. Another person's idol.

  914. The demon.

  915. Behind that idol.

  916. Will cause that person.

  917. To want.

  918. To kill you.

  919. Verse.

  920. Psalm 20.

  921. Psalm 31.

  922. Teaches us.

  923. The intensity.

  924. The fierceness.

  925. Of the battle.

  926. It's matters of life and death.

  927. And some of you have loved ones.

  928. God's put you in their life.

  929. To speak a word of truth.

  930. In a loving way.

  931. But behind that truth.

  932. Behind that simple.

  933. Bible verse.

  934. There is a spiritual.

  935. Battle going on.

  936. And it's fierce.

  937. And there will be casualties.

  938. We will feel it.

  939. We will suffer.

  940. We will also be weak.

  941. Like David.

  942. And confess.

  943. Oh Lord.

  944. I feel like you don't even see me.

  945. Like I'm cut off.

  946. The battle.

  947. Is ferocious.

  948. of the net which they have secretly laid for me,

  949. for you are my strength.

  950. I have no strength of my own.

  951. And then to rest in God,

  952. rest in his power, not our own,

  953. and entrust yourself to him.

  954. I learned that this was a common prayer at bedtime

  955. when you're going to bed in ancient Israel

  956. to say those words or something similar in verse 5.

  957. You know, we have Psalm 4a.

  958. Lay me down to sleep in peace,

  959. for thou, Lord, only will make me dwell in safety.

  960. And in verse 5 of Psalm 31,

  961. into your hands I commend my spirit as I go to sleep.

  962. I'm vulnerable, I'm resting.

  963. You know the number of my days.

  964. My spirit is in your hands, not my own,

  965. and I can fall asleep.

  966. Into your hands I commit my spirit.

  967. The verb here is to entrust my spirit

  968. to the hands of God.

  969. I give you charge over my innermost being.

  970. Lord, I'm placing my soul in your care.

  971. To you, I send my spirit,

  972. and I rest in faith.

  973. What he says the rest of verse 5.

  974. You have redeemed me,

  975. O Lord, God of truth.

  976. The source of my confidence

  977. is the word of God.

  978. God is the God of truth.

  979. He has spoken the promise of redemption,

  980. and I commend my spirit.

  981. I rest myself in him,

  982. even in the fierceness of the battle.

  983. Even if by laying down to sleep,

  984. I'm most vulnerable,

  985. I could never wake up.

  986. In David's case,

  987. a spear could pierce him in the night.

  988. And we learn to trust the Lord

  989. in the fierceness of the battle as well.

  990. When all around my soul gives way,

  991. we can testify,

  992. He then is all my hope and stay.

  993. On Christ, the solid ground, I stand.

  994. And on Christ, the solid ground, I can rest.

  995. The King's Prayer reveals

  996. the fierceness of the battle.

  997. The third glorious truth

  998. is that the King's Prayer reveals

  999. the great cost of his victory.

1000. The King's Prayer reveals next

1001. the great cost of his victory.

1002. David is not the hero of Psalm 31.

1003. He confesses in verse 9,

1004. Have mercy on me, O Lord,

1005. for I am in trouble.

1006. My eye wastes away with grief,

1007. yes, my soul and my body,

1008. for my life is spent with grief,

  1009. my years with sighing,

1010. my strength fails because of my iniquity,

1011. and my bones waste away.

1012. David's describing his inner man

  1013. and his outer man,

  1014. thin,

  1015. wasting away.

1016. He needs the Lord to show him mercy.

  1017. He's run out.

1018. His tank is totally dry.

1019. I'm in trouble, he says.

1020. And my eyes are full of tears and grief.

1021. The Lord humbled me again this week,

1022. and it hit me heavy yesterday,

  1023. working through this psalm.

  1024. The Lord convicted me

1025. that my heart is bent on keeping idols.

  1026. I have idols.

1027. I have idols I thought would no longer tempt me,

1028. but God, as a loving, gracious Father,

1029. scared me in a good way.

  1030. It's like I'm sensing this truth

  1031. from my loving Father.

  1032. Jason,

1033. if I stop holding you near me

  1034. for one moment,

1035. you will covet things of this world

1036. until you drown in them.

  1037. You are weak.

  1038. You're an idol keeper,

  1039. naturally.

1040. And you deserve my justice

  1041. and my wrath.

1042. Without me, you are wicked.

1043. And if you love any idol more than me,

1044. or try to bring an idol alongside me,

1045. your guilt and your filth

  1046. will be exposed.

1047. You deserve to be put to shame.

  1048. As I read Psalm 31,

1049. I realized I am one of those idol keepers.

  1050. And that's what I deserve.

1051. It's the wrath of the righteous king

  1052. poured out on me.

1053. So the response for idol keepers

1054. like me and like you,

  1055. it's in verse 10.

1056. We need to confess to the Lord God,

  1057. my strength fails

  1058. because of my iniquity.

1059. Have mercy on me, Lord.

  1060. My own strength fails

  1061. because of my iniquity.

  1062. Because we're idol keepers,

1063. ones who would hate God's servants

1064. if we were left to ourselves,

  1065. we can't pray Psalm 31

  1066. perfectly for ourselves.

  1067. There's only one person

1068. who could pray Psalm 31

  1069. in innocence,

  1070. in righteousness.

  1071. Who is it alone

  1072. who trusts in God

  1073. with all his heart,

  1074. all his soul,

  1075. all his mind,

  1076. and his strength,

  1077. who has no iniquity

1078. that he needs to confess,

1079. no mercy he needs to receive.

1080. It's only our Lord Jesus Christ

  1081. who is righteous.

  1082. Think of Psalm 31

1083. from the lips of King Jesus.

1084. It's our Lord Jesus Christ

  1085. who stands against idols

  1086. by his own strength.

  1087. Only Jesus Christ

  1088. has the power

  1089. to demolish the idols

  1090. of our hearts.

  1091. Only Jesus Christ

  1092. could endure the fear

1093. of demons on every side,

  1094. taking counsel together

  1095. through evil men,

  1096. Romans and Greeks,

  1097. and Jews alike,

1098. inside and outside of Israel.

  1099. Only Jesus Christ

  1100. was strong enough

  1101. to have the vessel

  1102. of his body

1103. broken like a clay pot,

  1104. to feel cut off

  1105. from before God's eyes,

1106. forgotten like a dead man.

  1107. Only Jesus Christ

1108. could lay down his life

  1109. willingly

1110. in order to take it up again.

  1111. Only Jesus Christ

  1112. could trust God

1113. in the fullness of faith

1114. and recite these very promises

  1115. from Psalm 31.

1116. It's the prayer of the true King

  1117. revealing the great cost

  1118. of his victory.

  1119. We read in Luke 23, 46

1120. how our Lord Jesus Christ

  1121. cried out

  1122. in a loud voice

  1123. verse 5

  1124. of Psalm 31.

  1125. O Lord,

  1126. into thy hands

  1127. I commend

  1128. my spirit.

  1129. And then he breathed

  1130. his last.

1131. Do you see what this

  1132. reveals?

  1133. The King Jesus

  1134. was meditating

  1135. on the words

  1136. in Psalm 31

  1137. as he hung

  1138. from the cross.

  1139. A song

  1140. of lament,

  1141. of anguish,

  1142. of suffering.

  1143. Directing his prayers

  1144. to God,

  1145. trusting in God's character

  1146. with perfect faith

1147. according to his human nature.

  1148. Our Lord Jesus Christ

  1149. could pray

  1150. Psalm 31

  1151. from the cross

  1152. trusting

  1153. it has happened,

  1154. it is being accomplished,

  1155. it is God's decree.

  1156. You have redeemed me

1157. O Lord God of truth.

  1158. I trust in you.

  1159. Your word is truth.

  1160. Your covenant promises

  1161. you will keep.

  1162. Our Lord Jesus Christ

  1163. could trust the promise

  1164. in verse 7.

  1165. Look at that.

  1166. Picture Jesus hanging.

1167. The words didn't make it

  1168. out of his mouth

  1169. but in his mind,

  1170. in his heart.

  1171. Verse 7,

1172. And I will be glad

  1173. and will rejoice

  1174. in your mercy

  1175. for you have considered

  1176. my troubles.

  1177. You have known

  1178. my soul

  1179. in adversities.

  1180. The Father knows

  1181. the Son

  1182. in his suffering.

  1183. You have not

  1184. shut me up

  1185. into the hand

  1186. of the enemy.

  1187. You have

  1188. set my feet

  1189. in a wide

  1190. place.

  1191. But as for me,

  1192. look at verse 14.

  1193. In the words

  1194. of Jesus

  1195. from the cross,

  1196. As for me,

  1197. I trust in you,

  1198. O Lord.

  1199. I say,

  1200. you are my God.

  1201. My times

  1202. are in your hand.

  1203. I will die,

  1204. but my death

1205. will be a great victory.

  1206. Even through my death,

  1207. you will still

  1208. deliver me

  1209. from the hands

  1210. of my enemies

  1211. who persecute me.

1212. Think of our Lord Jesus

  1213. trusting the promise

  1214. of verse 16.

  1215. Lord,

  1216. now the sky

  1217. has turned dark.

  1218. My body

  1219. is covered in blood.

  1220. I'm bearing

  1221. the sin

  1222. of my people.

  1223. And I'm receiving

  1224. your wrath

  1225. on my body.

  1226. But verse 16

  1227. is the hope.

  1228. Make your face

  1229. shine upon

  1230. your servant.

  1231. Save me

  1232. for your mercy's sake.

  1233. Our Lord Jesus

  1234. does not need

  1235. the Father's mercy,

  1236. but those

  1237. He's redeeming

  1238. need the Father's mercy.

  1239. And that's the promise

  1240. God the Father,

  1241. God the Son,

  1242. and God the Spirit

  1243. accomplish.

  1244. Securing the mercy

  1245. of God

  1246. through His servant,

  1247. Jesus Christ,

  1248. so that His face

  1249. will shine

  1250. on God's people

  1251. who are found

  1252. in Jesus.

  1253. The victory

  1254. belongs to the Lord.

  1255. Our redemption

  1256. has been secured.

  1257. When darkness

  1258. veils His loving face,

  1259. we can rest

  1260. on His same

  1261. unchanging grace.

  1262. The King's prayer

  1263. reveals

  1264. the great cost

  1265. of His victory.

  1266. The fourth

  1267. and final

  1268. glorious truth

  1269. for today

1270. is that the King's prayer

  1271. reveals the great

  1272. reward

  1273. of His suffering.

  1274. The King's prayer

  1275. reveals the great

  1276. reward

  1277. of His sufferings.

  1278. Well,

  1279. if these were

  1280. the thoughts

  1281. on the mind

  1282. of our Lord

  1283. on the cross,

  1284. did it happen?

  1285. Did He experience

  1286. going from

  1287. fear on every side,

  1288. closing in,

  1289. suffocating Him,

  1290. the crushing weight

  1291. of the wrath

  1292. of God

  1293. and go from there

  1294. to having His feet

1295. now put in a wide

  1296. place,

  1297. set firm,

1298. not hanging by the nails,

  1299. but standing,

  1300. victorious?

  1301. Did God's face

  1302. shine upon

  1303. our Lord Jesus,

  1304. the only worthy

  1305. servant?

  1306. Think of how

  1307. our Lord Jesus

  1308. could proclaim

  1309. the rest of the

  1310. verses of this

  1311. psalm,

  1312. bearing witness

  1313. to us from heaven

  1314. for all His army

  1315. on earth

  1316. to hear

  1317. and believe

  1318. and be encouraged.

  1319. Think of verse 19

  1320. from the lips

  1321. of Jesus.

  1322. Oh,

  1323. how great

  1324. is Your goodness,

  1325. God,

  1326. which You have

  1327. laid up

  1328. for those

  1329. who fear You.

  1330. He's gone

  1331. before us.

  1332. He's the front

  1333. runner of our faith,

  1334. and He turns

  1335. back around

  1336. and praises God.

  1337. How great

  1338. is God's goodness,

  1339. which He has

  1340. stored up

  1341. for all

  1342. who will follow

  1343. in my path

  1344. and fear the Lord,

  1345. which You have

  1346. prepared for those

  1347. who trust in You

  1348. in the presence

  1349. of the sons

  1350. of men.

  1351. From heaven,

  1352. He's saying,

1353. you who are in the

  1354. presence of men

  1355. on earth,

  1356. the Lord is good

  1357. and He has prepared

  1358. great rewards

  1359. for You.

  1360. And how will they

  1361. know on earth

  1362. until He returns

  1363. for His own?

  1364. How will we

  1365. trust this witness

  1366. from Christ?

  1367. In verse 20,

  1368. we have this promise

  1369. that I believe

  1370. it's for the church.

  1371. Look at verse 20.

  1372. God shall hide them.

  1373. These are the ones

  1374. who fear God

1375. who are in the presence

  1376. of men on earth.

  1377. God shall hide them

  1378. in the secret place

  1379. of Your presence

  1380. from the plots

  1381. of man.

  1382. God shall keep them

  1383. secretly

  1384. in a shelter

  1385. from strife

  1386. of tongues.

  1387. The Lord will give

  1388. His people shelter

  1389. from this world.

  1390. He will protect

  1391. His soldiers

  1392. on earth

  1393. with His very own

  1394. presence.

  1395. He describes

  1396. this shelter,

  1397. this pavilion

  1398. as a spiritual

  1399. mystery.

  1400. It's hidden

  1401. to the eyes

  1402. of the world.

  1403. They can't see it.

  1404. It's not visible.

  1405. It's disguised

  1406. and the world

  1407. will overlook it.

  1408. This reminded me

  1409. of 2 Corinthians 4.

  1410. Paul writes

  1411. that we commended

  1412. ourselves to

  1413. everyone's conscience

1414. in the sight of God

  1415. and our gospel

  1416. was proclaimed

  1417. as an open

  1418. statement

  1419. of the truth.

  1420. The gospel

  1421. is preached

  1422. clearly

  1423. for all to hear.

  1424. But listen to

  1425. what Paul writes

  1426. next,

  1427. 2 Corinthians 4.

  1428. 3.

  1429. Even if our gospel

  1430. is veiled,

  1431. it is veiled

  1432. to those who are

  1433. perishing.

  1434. In their case,

1435. the God of this world

  1436. has blinded the minds

  1437. of the unbelievers

  1438. to keep them

  1439. from seeing the light

  1440. of the gospel

  1441. of the glory

  1442. of Jesus Christ

  1443. who is the image

  1444. of God.

  1445. This is that

  1446. secret pavilion,

  1447. that hidden shelter.

  1448. How is it

  1449. that the Lord

  1450. disguises

  1451. His presence

  1452. among His people

  1453. in this world?

  1454. It's disguised

  1455. in the simplicity

  1456. of our worship.

  1457. As His people,

  1458. we meet up

  1459. in a rented

  1460. school gym.

  1461. We sing

  1462. simple songs

  1463. that visitors

  1464. who don't know

  1465. the Lord

  1466. think are foolish.

  1467. We proclaim

  1468. a gospel

  1469. that this world

  1470. thinks is ridiculous.

  1471. They'll mock it.

  1472. We read

  1473. from the Bible.

  1474. We preach.

  1475. We pray together.

  1476. We baptize.

  1477. We share

  1478. in the Lord's Supper.

  1479. And in these

  1480. simple ordinances

  1481. that the Lord

  1482. has given us,

  1483. we are

  1484. this meeting place,

  1485. this tent

  1486. where God protects us

  1487. with His very own

  1488. presence

  1489. in the presence

  1490. of our enemies.

  1491. One day,

  1492. we have this

  1493. glorious promise

  1494. in verse 21.

  1495. The strong city

  1496. of heaven

  1497. will be revealed.

  1498. Blessed be the Lord,

  1499. He has shown me

  1500. His marvelous kindness

  1501. in a strong city.

1502. You hear how this king

  1503. started off hiding

  1504. in the rocks

  1505. of refuge

  1506. in these outposts

  1507. on the mountaintops,

  1508. but now He's

  1509. in a strong city.

  1510. It's heavenly Zion,

  1511. the new Jerusalem,

  1512. that will soon

  1513. come to earth.

  1514. We trust by faith.

  1515. Now,

  1516. soon,

1517. it will be by sight.

  1518. We behold,

  1519. our king has gone

  1520. before us.

  1521. He keeps us secure

  1522. still.

1523. And how do we respond?

  1524. He tells us

  1525. how to respond

1526. in the last two verses.

1527. This king has been praying

  1528. throughout this whole psalm.

  1529. Now he's not directing

1530. his words to the Lord.

  1531. He's speaking

  1532. to the congregation.

  1533. He's speaking

  1534. to the army.

  1535. Oh,

  1536. love the Lord,

  1537. all you His saints,

  1538. for the Lord

  1539. preserves

  1540. the faithful

  1541. and fully repays

  1542. the proud person.

  1543. Be of good courage

  1544. and He shall strengthen

  1545. your heart,

  1546. all you

  1547. who hope

  1548. in the Lord.

  1549. Our king's prayer

  1550. reveals

  1551. that the Lord

  1552. is our only

  1553. refuge.

  1554. And this prayer

  1555. reveals that

  1556. the reward

  1557. of His suffering

  1558. is to rule

  1559. with His people,

  1560. with you and me,

  1561. forevermore.

1562. And this is our strength.

  1563. The king calls you

  1564. and me,

  1565. put your hope

  1566. in the Lord.

  1567. Be of good courage.

  1568. And the promise

  1569. is that God

  1570. will strengthen

  1571. your heart.

  1572. Let's thank the Lord

  1573. for being

  1574. our rock,

  1575. our refuge,

  1576. and ask Him

  1577. to help us

1578. as we trust in Him.

  1579. Oh, Lord,

  1580. we praise You.

  1581. We thank You

  1582. that Jesus Christ

  1583. won the victory

1584. that we could never win.

  1585. He secured

  1586. the reward

  1587. that we don't deserve.

  1588. We thank You

  1589. that we can run

  1590. to Jesus Christ.

1591. He is our mighty fortress.

  1592. He is our solid

  1593. rock of refuge.

  1594. Help us to hide

  1595. in Him, Lord.

  1596. We pray that You

  1597. will preserve us

  1598. in the fierce

  1599. spiritual battle.

  1600. We pray that You

  1601. will protect us, Lord,

  1602. keep our feet

  1603. from stumbling.

  1604. We are weak.

  1605. We are thin.

  1606. We pray that You

  1607. will continue

  1608. to be our strength,

  1609. continue to supply us,

  1610. Lord,

  1611. our needs

1612. as we walk with You.

1613. For Your glory we ask.

  1614. Amen.
