  1. If I can get this.

  2. Is it?

  3. Yep.

  4. Got it?

  5. All right.

  6. In and out, in and out.

  7. Turn with me to Colossians chapter 4.

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  8. As you do, I want to reiterate, it has been a blessing to go to Montana.

  9. I was thankful to be able to be sitting beside Jason as they affirmed your congregation into

  10. the association.

  11. And he was thrilled, as you know Jason to be.

  12. He was so excited.

  13. I'm so thankful for that and so eager to see how the Lord is going to continue to grow.

  14. Not only that association, but you as your gifts and your strengths are going to be able to make that association

  15. just more and more faithful in that regard.

  16. What a blessing it was for me.

  17. That's why I wanted to go there.

  18. I am a part of the Southeast Association as well, and so that was a piece of that.

  19. But I wanted to be sitting there beside Jason when that happened.

  20. And then to be able to come here after many, many months of being able to pray and be a means of encouragement.

  21. You guys, you know how this works.

  22. You pray for missionaries.

  23. But man, it's so much better if you can see them and see their face and see their family

  24. and know who they are and interact with them.

  25. And now you can pray for them more particularly and carefully.

  26. And so thank you for that benefit.

  27. I've been praying for you guys without many faces.

  28. And so now I'm able to pray for you.

  29. And we as a congregation will be able to pray for you with faces and names.

  30. And when you share particular concerns, we'll be able to know specifically those who are going through those things.

  31. And so I am here this morning on behalf of Sovereign Grace Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida.

  32. And I greet you in their name and with their authority.

  33. And I'm seeking to be faithful to honor our Lord Jesus Christ,

  34. but also be faithful to each of you this morning as we come to God's Word together.

  35. Have your Bibles there open to Colossians chapter 4.

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  36. This is where we're going to be.

  37. I'd like for us to...

  38. Thank you, sir.

  39. Thank you, sir.

  40. Let's see if I can get that.

  41. I'd like for us to be there at the beginning of Colossians 4 for our time.

  42. Let me pray.

  43. Ask the Lord to grant us His grace that we may hear and receive His Word this morning.

  44. This is a prayer of illumination.

  45. And then our prayer will be that the Lord will, in His kindness, speak to us through His Word this morning.

  46. And so let's go to the Lord in prayer, and then we will begin our time.

  47. Almighty Father, Maker and Sustainer, Good Shepherd,

  48. refuge of our weary souls that are here this morning,

  49. You tell of Your glory, Your power, Your majesty through Your creation.

  50. You have spoken of Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness throughout the generations through Your prophets.

  51. You came and dwelt among us in the person of Jesus Christ, the image of the invisible God,

  52. the firstborn of all creation, the firstborn from the dead,

  53. the preeminent and worthy of all praise, adoration, and worship, Jesus Christ our Savior.

  54. Grant us, I pray, Father in heaven, Your Spirit this morning,

  55. that we might look to Christ as our great hope,

  56. trust Christ as our sufficient joy,

  57. love Christ as our satisfaction and pleasure forevermore,

  58. reveal the foolishness of our hearts

  59. when we go after empty, earthly ambitions, trinkets.

  60. These make so many amazing promises to us,

  61. and yet, Lord, they have proven over and over again to be barren,

  62. to be useless, to be damning to our souls.

  63. May we see Jesus Christ this morning.

  64. Father, cause us to cast away the worthless longings and joys

  65. that this world seeks to press upon us,

  66. and may we be thrilled this morning.

  67. With the preeminence of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

  68. Amen.

  69. So, you guys are a few years old as a church.

  70. Our congregation is 24 years old.

  71. And I want you to know that the greatest blessing of your life

  72. can and will be through what God is doing through you

  73. and the congregation that God's placed you in.

  74. These are eternal things.

  75. And the chaos of life often causes us to forget that

  76. and make us think that so many other things are more important,

  77. and yet, our Lord has told us,

  78. better is the end of a thing than its beginning.

  79. This is Ecclesiastes 7.

  80. You're here this morning.

  81. All of you have certain places that you're at in your life

  82. and your struggles and your different things that you're in.

  83. But here you are.

  84. And the question you've asked yourself

  85. and the question we ask ourselves often

  86. is not just,

  87. how am I going to make it through the next few days

  88. or the next few weeks

  89. or the things that we have in front of us.

  90. The real question is,

  91. will I persevere to the end?

  92. Better is the end of a thing than its beginning.

  93. All of us can start out strong.

  94. How many books have you started to read?

  95. And you might even say you've read them,

  96. but really you only got through the first chapter maybe or so.

  97. Our lives are that way.

  98. And I want to encourage us this morning

  99. toward perseverance.

  100. Because that's what really matters.

  101. And that's what really we need to all have

  102. as our ambition and our aim.

  103. Because all of us have responsibilities and callings

  104. and people that look at us,

  105. maybe even for our faith.

  106. And that may be great and wonderful,

  107. but when they stand over our grave,

  108. will they still say,

  109. that man, that woman was faithful?

  110. Man, I hope so.

  111. Right?

  112. I hope so.

  113. So how do we persevere?

  114. What is it that will cause us to persevere?

  115. John Owen,

  116. one of the favorites in way of English Puritans for so many,

  117. he writes a book entitled,

  118. or a little paperback,

  119. I would encourage you to get it from Banner of Truth,

  120. entitled Glory of Christ.

  121. It is fantastic.

  122. It's great.

  123. I would encourage you to read it.

  124. Near the end,

  125. he talks about,

  126. what do we do as we're nearing death,

  127. or as we're growing old,

  128. to persevere?

  129. To persevere.

  130. He talks about how,

  131. when we near the end of this work,

  132. we are seeking to look to the Lord,

  133. and too often,

  134. and too often,

  135. even in our weaknesses,

  136. we can feel as if our lives,

  137. and even our faith,

  138. is unraveling.

  139. I used to,

  140. as a young believer,

  141. believe that if I really,

  142. really hit it hard,

  143. like I did in college,

  144. right before the test,

  145. really hit it hard,

  146. and was really faithful,

  147. and did really well,

  148. that by the time you become old,

  149. being a Christian is going to be easy,

  150. and I'm just going to be kind of coasting along,

  151. and I don't want to discourage you in this,

  152. but as you get older,

  153. the Lord just brings up those sins,

  154. that were just deeper,

  155. than you knew you even had,

  156. and there's new challenges,

  157. new things,

  158. that are coming along.

  159. So,

  160. in our old age,

  161. as we grow older,

  162. as we continue,

  163. Owen mentions two things,

  164. that he mentions here,

  165. in the latter part of this volume,

  166. called Glory of Christ.

  167. He says,

  168. there are two things,

  169. which those who,

  170. after a long profession of faith,

  171. in the gospel,

  172. they are going to need to address,

  173. he calls these,

  174. the confinements,

  175. or the borders,

  176. that should be around us,

  177. as we face eternity together.

  178. He says,

  179. one of these things,

  180. that we need to be concerned about,

  181. are our faults,

  182. that need to be repaired,

  183. our decays,

  184. that need to be recovered,

  185. and our backslidings,

  186. that need to be healed.

  187. He said,

  188. it is easy in old age,

  189. to begin taking those too lightly,

  190. because they've been around for so long,

  191. that you begin just to kind of,

  192. see them as normal.

  193. He said,

  194. as we grow older,

  195. into faith,

  196. we need to take those things up.

  197. And then he goes on,

  198. and he says,

  199. the second thing we need to consider,

  200. as we grow in our faith,

  201. as we profess the Lord longer,

  202. is he speaks of,

  203. the other is that,

  204. we may have these fresh springs,

  205. of spiritual life,

  206. vigorous actings,

  207. of all divine graces,

  208. in spiritual mindedness,

  209. holiness,

  210. fruitfulness,

  211. to the praise of God,

  212. the honor of the gospel,

  213. and the increase,

  214. of their own peace and joy.

  215. Now that's a Puritan sentence.

  216. They like to use a lot of words,

  217. and bring everything together there.

  218. So Owen shows us,

  219. how one might receive,

  220. both repair,

  221. for one's stubborn fractions,

  222. infractions,

  223. but also fresh springs,

  224. of divine grace,

  225. to renew our fervor,

  226. in our final days.

  227. What does Owen say,

  228. will do this,

  229. necessary thing,

  230. that we need,

  231. in our older profession,

  232. of faith?

  233. What is it that's necessary,

  234. he says?

  235. He says,

  236. look to Christ.

  237. He said,

  238. look to Christ,

  239. a steady,

  240. this is what I'm quoting Owen here,

  241. a steady spiritual view,

  242. of the glory of Christ,

  243. by faith,

  244. will give us,

  245. a gracious revival,

  246. from inward decays,

  247. and fresh springs,

  248. of grace,

  249. even in our latter days.

  250. This is exactly,

  251. what David,

  252. the king,

  253. in Old Testament,

  254. speaks of.

  255. Those who look to him,

  256. are radiant,

  257. and their faces,

  258. shall never be ashamed.

  259. Psalm 34, 5.

  260. This is what Isaiah,

  261. the great prophet,

  262. of the Old Testament,

  263. speaks of,

  264. when he says in Isaiah 45,

    Isaiah 45:22

  265. verse 22,

  266. turn to me and be saved,

  267. all the ends of the earth,

  268. for I am God,

  269. and there is no other.

  270. Turn to me,

  271. he says,

  272. Isaiah.

  273. And this is what,

  274. Paul,

  275. is calling the Colossian congregation,

  276. and us this morning,

  277. to,

  278. in our text,

  279. in Colossians chapter 4.

    Colossians 4 chapter mention

  280. I want you to notice with me,

  281. in Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  282. Look with me,

  283. just turn a page over here.

  284. We're going to be looking at various passages,

  285. in Colossians,

  286. but we're going to be honing in,

  287. on Colossians 4.

  288. Colossians 3,

    Colossians 3:1

  289. verse 1,

  290. notice what he's doing here.

  291. If then you have been raised,

  292. with Christ,

  293. seek the things that are above,

  294. where Christ is,

  295. seated at the right hand of God.

  296. Set your minds,

  297. on the things that are above,

  298. not on the things,

  299. that are on earth.

  300. Paul continues,

  301. in chapter 3,

  302. to give a very practical,

  303. very practical ways,

  304. we are to live,

  305. as we seek the things above.

  306. Isn't that vague?

  307. Seek the things above.

  308. What does that look like?

  309. Am I just simply,

  310. supposed to sit somewhere,

  311. and meditate,

  312. on the clouds coming by?

  313. No,

  314. he's very practical,

  315. in Colossians chapter 3.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  316. He speaks of this,

  317. seeking the things,

  318. that are above.

  319. And then he goes on,

  320. he says,

  321. in verse 5,

  322. notice there,

  323. it says,

  324. put to death,

  325. what is earthly.

  326. We're also,

  327. according to verse 12 then,

  328. to put on then,

  329. compassionate hearts.

  330. Now,

  331. if you don't think,

  332. that's personal enough,

  333. notice as Paul does,

  334. he continues here,

  335. and he says,

  336. how are we to,

  337. set our minds,

  338. on the things above,

  339. where Christ is?

  340. Wives are to submit,

  341. to their husbands,

  342. husbands are to love,

  343. their wives,

  344. children are to obey,

  345. their parents,

  346. fathers are not to provoke,

  347. their children,

  348. bond servants,

  349. are to obey,

  350. obey the masters,

  351. and treat their bond servants,

  352. justly and fairly.

  353. Reading through,

  354. chapter 3 then,

  355. we may become,

  356. overwhelmed,

  357. at just how,

  358. personal,

  359. and intimate,

  360. and in our lives,

  361. it really is.

  362. It's unceasing,

  363. influence of Christ's,

  364. preeminence then,

  365. that we find earlier,

  366. in Colossians 1,

  367. speaking of Christ's,

  368. preeminence,

  369. is in every area,

  370. of our lives,

  371. is rubbed into,

  372. the very,

  373. the very,

  374. very small spots,

  375. of our lives in fact.

  376. So Paul closes,

  377. this significant list,

  378. of direct imperatives,

  379. by showing us,

  380. how we might be sustained,

  381. this is what I'm talking about,

  382. persevering,

  383. in this new life,

  384. saturated,

  385. and consumed,

  386. with Christ's,

  387. rightful,

  388. preeminence,

  389. in our lives.

  390. Will we be sustained,

  391. in this?

  392. Well,

  393. I think all of us,

  394. right mind,

  395. even in our right mind,

  396. would say,

  397. well if it was up to me,

  398. no.

  399. If it was up to my strength,

  400. my energy,

  401. my effort,

  402. my abilities,

  403. none of us,

  404. I think,

  405. can say,

  406. we will not be sustained.

  407. Unless the Lord,

  408. holds us up,

  409. we will all fall,

  410. in an instant.

  411. So then,

  412. what we have here,

  413. then,

  414. is Paul saying,

  415. well if this,

  416. is all the different aspects,

  417. where Christ's preeminence,

  418. is supposed to be in our lives,

  419. how might we be sustained,

  420. what is it then,

  421. that Paul is calling,

  422. this Colossian congregation,

  423. and us today,

  424. to do,

  425. in order to sustain,

  426. a fervency,

  427. in this life,

  428. in Christ,

  429. cherishing,

  430. his preeminence,

  431. in all things.

  432. Very practical.

  433. Very practical.

  434. He's asking us,

  435. to do two things.

  436. Here's the two points,

  437. for the message this morning.

  438. Two things.

  439. Point number one,

  440. continue steadfastly,

  441. in prayer.

  442. You see this here,

  443. in verses two through four.

  444. I'm getting ready,

  445. to read these passages,

  446. for you.

  447. And then point number two,

  448. walk wisely,

  449. toward outsiders.

  450. Verses five through six.

  451. Point number one,

  452. continue steadfastly,

  453. in prayer.

  454. Verses two through four.

  455. And then,

  456. point number two,

  457. walk wisely,

  458. toward outsiders.

  459. Verses five through six.

  460. Look with me.

  461. Verse two.

  462. Continue steadfastly,

  463. in prayer,

  464. being watchful,

  465. in it,

  466. with thanksgiving.

  467. At the same time,

  468. pray also,

  469. for us,

  470. that God may open,

  471. to us,

  472. a door,

  473. for the word,

  474. to declare,

  475. the mystery of Christ,

  476. on account of which,

  477. I am in prison,

  478. that I may make it clear,

  479. which is how I ought to speak.

  480. Verse five.

  481. Walk in wisdom,

  482. toward outsiders,

  483. making the best use,

  484. of the time.

  485. Let your speech,

  486. always be gracious,

  487. seasoned with salt,

  488. so that you may know,

  489. how you ought to answer,

  490. each person.

  491. This is the text,

  492. we'll be looking at this morning,

  493. and seeking to understand,

  494. by God's grace.

  495. We see here,

  496. that Paul,

  497. point number one,

  498. continues steadfastly,

  499. in prayer.

  500. We see here,

  501. that Paul,

  502. is not simply,

  503. suggesting,

  504. the value of prayer,

  505. in our text.

  506. But instead,

  507. no one said,

  508. we find here,

  509. that Paul's,

  510. insistence upon prayer,

  511. being a constant,

  512. part of our lives.

  513. In other words,

  514. and this is important,

  515. I think some of us,

  516. misunderstand this.

  517. Our text,

  518. is not speaking here,

  519. of the intensity,

  520. of our prayers,

  521. but the,

  522. consistency,

  523. of our prayers.

  524. Sometimes,

  525. again,

  526. like the college student,

  527. that hits it real hard,

  528. right before the night,

  529. before the exam,

  530. we think our prayers,

  531. are that way.

  532. I don't have to pray,

  533. as much,

  534. but when I do pray,

  535. I need to be really,

  536. really fervent,

  537. and just kind of,

  538. come at it hard,

  539. and then I can,

  540. lay off for a few more weeks.

  541. No,

  542. here what we find,

  543. is that,

  544. it is not the intensity,

  545. of our prayers,

  546. but the consistency,

  547. of the prayers,

  548. that we find,

  549. that Paul is,

  550. encouraging us in.

  551. Our lives,

  552. are to be marked,

  553. by habitual,

  554. frequent,

  555. persistent prayer.

  556. Paul then,

  557. gives us,

  558. two characteristics,

  559. of our prayers,

  560. that will help us,

  561. in our persistence.

  562. who here,

  563. don't raise your hand,

  564. can say,

  565. I pray enough,

  566. I mean,

  567. I'm,

  568. I'm,

  569. I'm killing it,

  570. I pray all the time,

  571. and I do plenty,

  572. and I don't think I need to do anymore.

  573. None of us,

  574. right?

  575. So how can we,

  576. persist,

  577. more faithfully,

  578. more carefully,

  579. how can we persevere,

  580. in this prayers?

  581. First,

  582. we see,

  583. that our prayers,

  584. are to be watchful,

  585. are to be watchful.

  586. You see here,

  587. in verse two,

  588. this persistent prayer,

  589. is rooted,

  590. in a discipline,

  591. that has been,

  592. all but lost,

  593. in our day to day.

  594. And this discipline,

  595. is historically,

  596. being called,

  597. watchfulness.

  598. However,

  599. this call,

  600. is something,

  601. we see,

  602. over and over again,

  603. in scripture.

  604. Jesus himself,

  605. calls his disciples,

  606. to this.

  607. Mark chapter 14,

    Mark 14:38

  608. verse 38,

  609. Jesus says,

  610. to his disciples,

  611. watch and pray,

  612. that you may not,

  613. enter into temptation.

  614. Do we need to watch,

  615. and pray guys?

  616. Absolutely.

  617. The spirit is,

  618. indeed willing,

  619. but the flesh is weak,

  620. Jesus tells,

  621. his disciples.

  622. He tells us.

  623. Peter,

  624. the apostle,

  625. warns the saints,

  626. of his day,

  627. be sober minded,

  628. be watchful.

  629. Your adversary,

  630. the devil,

  631. prowls around,

  632. like a roaring lion,

  633. seeking someone,

  634. to devour.

  635. This is why,

  636. we need to be watchful.

  637. We see that these texts,

  638. are not simply speaking,

  639. of staying awake,

  640. while praying,

  641. and that's,

  642. that's a,

  643. that's a thing.

  644. But instead,

  645. they seem to be speaking,

  646. of this watchfulness,

  647. with an eye,

  648. to an imminent end,

  649. of the world's agenda,

  650. to the return of our Savior.

  651. We're praying,

  652. watching for,

  653. that end,

  654. looking for,

  655. how is it,

  656. Lord,

  657. that you're bringing,

  658. these things together.

  659. Therefore,

  660. it will be right,

  661. to pray,

  662. with fervent watchfulness,

  663. and to say,

  664. O Lord,

  665. your kingdom come,

  666. your will be done,

  667. on earth,

  668. as it is in heaven.

  669. Come,

  670. O Lord Jesus,

  671. come quickly,

  672. as the end of our Bible says.

  673. However,

  674. this watchfulness,

  675. watchfulness,

  676. is not simply,

  677. a praying,

  678. that is,

  679. constantly looking,

  680. to the clouds,

  681. for the Lord's return.

  682. But instead,

  683. this watchfulness,

  684. is a diligent,

  685. watching,

  686. of one's own life,

  687. in light of Christ's return.

  688. In other words,

  689. this call to watchfulness,

  690. is not simply,

  691. an eye to the future,

  692. but it is,

  693. a careful,

  694. and diligent,

  695. guarding,

  696. of our hearts,

  697. from the coldness,

  698. toward God,

  699. and indifference,

  700. to His righteousness,

  701. and holiness,

  702. that we are all,

  703. so apt to,

  704. fall into.

  705. Again,

  706. John Owen,

  707. the Puritan,

  708. can help us here.

  709. Owen,

  710. defines watchfulness,

  711. in this way.

  712. Owen,

  713. defines watchfulness,

  714. as,

  715. a universal,

  716. carefulness,

  717. and diligence,

  718. exercising itself,

  719. in and by all ways,

  720. and means,

  721. prescribed by God,

  722. over our hearts,

  723. and our ways.

  724. So not only,

  725. the things that we're doing,

  726. but also what's happening,

  727. inside of us.

  728. The bait,

  729. and methods,

  730. of Satan,

  731. we're supposed to be,

  732. watching over those things.

  733. How is it that,

  734. Satan uniquely baits,

  735. and tempts me,

  736. or you,

  737. as we're thinking,

  738. through these things.

  739. This is the watchfulness.

  740. The occasions,

  741. and advantages,

  742. of sin,

  743. in the world,

  744. that we,

  745. that we be not,

  746. entangled to them.

  747. Excuse me.

  748. Let me state it this way,

  749. and it may be helpful,

  750. our congregation,

  751. has found this helpful.

  752. And this may be,

  753. just a good test,

  754. for us,

  755. to see,

  756. how we need to,

  757. lean in,

  758. to this,

  759. this wonderful watchfulness.

  760. Yesterday,

  761. think about yesterday,

  762. your yesterday.

  763. It's different than mine,

  764. I hope,

  765. for a couple reasons.

  766. Yesterday,

  767. to the degree,

  768. that you prayed,

  769. the amount,

  770. that you prayed yesterday,

  771. is exactly equal,

  772. to the degree,

  773. that you felt like,

  774. you needed God.

  775. no more,

  776. and no less.

  777. The degree,

  778. or the amount,

  779. that you prayed yesterday,

  780. is exactly equal,

  781. to the amount,

  782. that you thought,

  783. you needed God.

  784. No more,

  785. and no less.

  786. you only continue,

  787. steadfastly in prayer,

  788. if you understand,

  789. the great dangers,

  790. and the amazing assaults,

  791. that are around us,

  792. in the world,

  793. that we're in,

  794. regularly.

  795. If you're in desperate need,

  796. for the Lord,

  797. what are you going to do?

  798. Well,

  799. you're going to pray.

  800. And if you have it all,

  801. figured out,

  802. and you've got it,

  803. and you can handle this,

  804. this is okay,

  805. guess what you're not going to do?

  806. You're not going to pray.

  807. Only if you begin,

  808. to acknowledge,

  809. the dullness,

  810. and the coldness,

  811. and the indifference,

  812. of your own heart,

  813. will you turn,

  814. to constant,

  815. steadfast prayer,

  816. doing this with watchfulness,

  817. knowing that,

  818. the Lord has to do something,

  819. in your heart.

  820. But don't make the mistake here,

  821. what are,

  822. what are you watching for?

  823. You are not to be,

  824. diving into,

  825. a,

  826. a,

  827. a deep introspection,

  828. of your own soul here.

  829. A self-help evaluation,

  830. what are the,

  831. calendar things,

  832. I need to change,

  833. what are the agenda things,

  834. I need to change,

  835. that's not what I'm speaking of.

  836. When I'm speaking of,

  837. watchfulness here,

  838. you know this watchfulness,

  839. is a,

  840. a vigilant,

  841. tenacious,

  842. attention,

  843. to Christ,

  844. in your life.

  845. Setting your,

  846. eyes upon Christ.

  847. We will do this,

  848. how,

  849. how do you do this?

  850. Well,

  851. how do I do this?

  852. Well,

  853. turn to prayer.

  854. Turn to the Lord in prayer.

  855. Cry out to Him.

  856. Persistent,

  857. looking to Christ,

  858. seeking His face,

  859. setting your mind and heart on Him,

  860. that He might warmly stir,

  861. a love,

  862. the mercy,

  863. the affection,

  864. of Him in you,

  865. comes when we,

  866. when we pray.

  867. And when we realize how much that,

  868. how valuable that is in our lives,

  869. we might even set aside,

  870. lingering time of prayer,

  871. and say,

  872. Lord,

  873. I need to sit here,

  874. and just pause,

  875. and listen,

  876. and be silent,

  877. and cry out,

  878. and explain my heart,

  879. and ask for you,

  880. to grant me grace.

  881. Listen,

  882. brothers and sisters,

  883. our Father,

  884. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  885. is seated at the right hand of God.

  886. And He's going to return.

  887. And we can cry out to Him.

  888. He wants to hear His saints,

  889. His people,

  890. cry out to Him.

  891. Because there will be a day,

  892. when Christ,

  893. who is your life,

  894. will appear,

  895. Colossians 3,

  896. 4,

  897. if you want to look at it,

  898. then you also,

  899. will appear with Him in glory.

  900. If that's your heart,

  901. that is a blessing.

  902. If that's not your heart,

  903. you're like,

  904. oh man,

  905. I'm just so far away from that.

  906. Ask Him,

  907. Lord,

  908. would you give me that?

  909. Lord,

  910. would you,

  911. would,

  912. why would the Lord not answer,

  913. that prayer?

  914. That prayer of all,

  915. why would the Lord not answer that prayer?

  916. Lord,

  917. allow me to have a heart,

  918. that longs for your appearing,

  919. that when you also appear,

  920. that I might be with you in glory.

  921. Because of indwelling sin,

  922. and the world's influences,

  923. Satan's cunning,

  924. we must realize that,

  925. like gravity,

  926. these are always pulling us away from Christ.

  927. If we ever put it in neutral,

  928. we're not going to remain in that spot,

  929. we're going to glide down the hill.

  930. So if you do not have a fervent passion for Christ,

  931. and regularly being reminded,

  932. I've got to come back to Christ here,

  933. His righteousness,

  934. His holiness,

  935. and His love,

  936. then let me serve to you a warning this morning.

  937. Some need to hear this.

  938. You've already left your post,

  939. and you're off your watch.

  940. You're not being watchful.

  941. Turn back.

  942. Ask the Lord for repentance.

  943. And turn back.

  944. Our prayers are to be not only watchful,

  945. but as well,

  946. they're to be thankful.

  947. It's hard.

  948. Do you know of a praying person

  949. that's also a grumbling person?

  950. You don't.

  951. Because someone who's constantly coming to the Lord in prayer

  952. is one who is thankful.

  953. Glaring gratitude.

  954. That's what prayers are.

  955. We may come to prayer

  956. with hearts heavy and burdened,

  957. but while in the prayer

  958. we are able to reflect

  959. upon the lavish supply of Christ,

  960. and we are thankful,

  961. despite all of our real struggles,

  962. despite our pains and sorrows in the life,

  963. Christ comes shining through.

  964. We can say,

  965. yes, Lord,

  966. and all of these things,

  967. and yet,

  968. think about it,

  969. a lot of times,

  970. those things that our hearts are so burdened over

  971. and struggling

  972. and difficulties,

  973. difficulties,

  974. were they ever promised to us forever anyway?

  975. They weren't.

  976. We just love them so much

  977. and they've been such a good blessing

  978. from the Lord to us

  979. that we think,

  980. well, maybe we're to live the rest of our lives

  981. with this blessing or this good.

  982. Each and every one of us

  983. are going to set aside

  984. each and every one of these temporal blessings,

  985. all of which that were to point us

  986. and to remind us

  987. and to thrill us

  988. and to stir us to what?

  989. The glory of Christ.

  990. If it's not doing that

  991. and we're anchoring our hearts in these things,

  992. what will cause us to persevere?

  993. Because that's the hard part, right?

  994. When these things start being pulled away from us,

  995. even our health.

  996. Is Christ enough?

  997. Yes.

  998. He is.

  999. He is.

1000. And even if you're in church all your life,

  1001. you'll ask that question

1002. when these hard challenges come.

  1003. Is Christ enough?

  1004. Yes.

  1005. Yes.

  1006. Ask those questions

1007. not only to brothers and sisters around you,

  1008. but to our Lord.

1009. Christ, I want you to be enough.

1010. We find that the more we reflect upon Christ,

1011. the more our hearts will turn to prayer and thanksgiving.

1012. In this short book of Colossians,

1013. we can't read more than just a couple paragraphs

  1014. without seeing Paul

1015. turning his heart to gratitude

  1016. and pouring out gratitude

  1017. over and over again.

  1018. Look at Colossians 1, verse 3.

    Colossians 1:3

  1019. Look here.

  1020. Colossians 1, 3.

  1021. It says,

  1022. We always thank God,

1023. the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

1024. when we pray to you.

  1025. See that in Colossians 1, 3?

  1026. Colossians 1, 12.

1027. Giving thanks to the Father

  1028. who has qualified you

1029. to share in the inheritance of the saints

  1030. in light.

1031. Giving thanks to the Father.

1032. Now look at chapter 2, verse 7.

1033. Rooted and built up in Him

1034. and established in the faith

1035. just as you were taught

  1036. abounding.

  1037. How?

  1038. In thanksgiving.

  1039. Look at chapter 3, verse 17.

  1040. Whatever you do

  1041. in word or deed,

  1042. do everything

1043. in the name of our Lord Jesus.

  1044. Giving thanks to God,

  1045. the Father,

  1046. through Him.

  1047. So,

1048. our prayers are to be watchful

1049. if they're going to persist.

  1050. But our persistent prayers

1051. also need to be focused.

1052. This is the second characteristic

1053. that Paul gives to us here

  1054. in Colossians 4.

  1055. The perseverance in prayer

1056. is also to be focused prayer.

1057. And it might be better to say here

  1058. targeted prayer.

1059. You see here in verses 3 and 4

1060. both what He is wanting them

1061. to pray for, verse 3,

1062. and why He is asking them

  1063. to pray these prayers.

  1064. Simply put,

1065. our prayers will never persist,

  1066. continue steadfastly,

1067. as our passage here says,

  1068. if they are random,

  1069. wandering, aimless prayers.

  1070. Dear Jesus,

1071. be with me all day

  1072. and for everybody

  1073. all over the place

  1074. and also the missionaries.

  1075. Amen.

  1076. You've heard those prayers,

  1077. right?

1078. You've prayed those prayers, maybe.

1079. We see that Paul gives

  1080. the Colossians a target,

  1081. a focus

  1082. for their prayers.

  1083. He says here

  1084. in our passage,

  1085. at the same time,

  1086. pray also for us

1087. that God may open to us

1088. a door for the Word

1089. to declare the mystery of Christ.

1090. Do you see how specific

  1091. he's being?

1092. We see here that Paul

  1093. calls the Colossian congregation

  1094. and to pray

  1095. not for him.

  1096. Notice,

1097. Paul here is not saying

  1098. pray for me

  1099. nor for anyone

  1100. else specifically,

  1101. but instead

  1102. he's praying

  1103. that the Word

  1104. may go forward.

  1105. Paul does here

  1106. what other New Testament

  1107. writers often do.

  1108. He personifies

1109. the very Word of God

  1110. as if

  1111. the Word of God

  1112. is moving

  1113. and working

  1114. and changing

  1115. and shaping

  1116. God's people.

  1117. And it is.

  1118. It is.

  1119. We don't see it,

1120. but we pray for it

1121. and we trust our Lord

  1122. for it.

  1123. Paul is wanting

  1124. the Word

  1125. to continue to do

  1126. what it has done

  1127. in the midst

  1128. of the church

  1129. there in Colossae.

  1130. Chapter 1

  1131. of Colossians

  1132. verse 6,

  1133. or excuse me,

  1134. verse 3.

  1135. Colossians 1

    Colossians 1:3

  1136. verse 3 says,

  1137. We always

  1138. thank God,

  1139. there's our thankfulness,

1140. the Father of the Lord

  1141. Jesus Christ

1142. when we pray for you

  1143. since we heard

  1144. of your faith

  1145. in Christ Jesus

  1146. and the love

  1147. that you have

  1148. for all the saints

  1149. because of the hope

  1150. laid up for you

  1151. in heaven.

  1152. Listen,

  1153. of this

  1154. you have heard

  1155. before where

  1156. in the word

  1157. of the truth

  1158. the gospel,

1159. listen to what he says here,

1160. which has come to you

  1161. as indeed

  1162. in the whole world,

  1163. what is it doing?

  1164. It is bearing fruit

  1165. and increasing

  1166. as it also does

  1167. among you

  1168. since the day

  1169. you heard it

  1170. and understood

  1171. the grace of God

  1172. and truth.

  1173. faith.

  1174. This word,

  1175. this gospel advancement

  1176. is God's unfolding

  1177. plan for the world

  1178. to know and worship

  1179. the Lord Jesus Christ.

1180. This is what we have

  1181. in our passage here

  1182. in Colossians 4

  1183. that's spoken of

  1184. as the mystery

  1185. of Christ

  1186. that we are

  1187. to persistently

  1188. pray for.

  1189. We notice something

  1190. interesting

  1191. in the last phrase

  1192. here

  1193. in verse 4

  1194. on account

  1195. of which

  1196. I am in prison.

  1197. You see that?

  1198. Here Paul

  1199. is giving us

  1200. an idea

  1201. of just how

  1202. necessary

  1203. and committed

  1204. he is

  1205. to see the word

  1206. of God

  1207. go forward

  1208. at the cost

  1209. of even

  1210. his imprisonment.

  1211. And yet

  1212. Paul did not

  1213. ask the Colossians

1214. to pray for his release.

  1215. Isn't that interesting?

  1216. This man's in prison.

  1217. I mean the prayer

  1218. that I would pray

1219. and I think the prayer

  1220. that we would pray

  1221. pray that the Lord

  1222. will release me

  1223. from prison

1224. and all by the way

1225. may the word of God

  1226. be, I mean

  1227. I wouldn't leave it out.

  1228. I hope I'm more spiritual

  1229. than that, right?

  1230. And we are.

  1231. No.

1232. He doesn't even mention that.

  1233. He's saying

  1234. the point here

1235. is that the word of God

  1236. goes forward.

  1237. If somebody asks you

  1238. we have two families

  1239. every Sunday

  1240. two covenant families

  1241. every Sunday

  1242. that we pray for

  1243. specifically

  1244. throughout the week.

  1245. And it's become

  1246. a regular pattern

  1247. in our congregation

  1248. where those two families

  1249. typically get approached

  1250. on Sunday

  1251. that they are going

  1252. to be prayed for

  1253. for that week.

  1254. We mention them

  1255. at the beginning

  1256. of the service

  1257. and then many

  1258. in the congregation

  1259. go up to those

  1260. different individuals

  1261. that are members

  1262. of our church

  1263. and say

  1264. how can I pray

  1265. for you this week?

  1266. You know how hard

  1267. that question can be

  1268. if we don't get

  1269. asked that very often?

  1270. So begin thinking

  1271. about this.

  1272. how can the word

  1273. of God

  1274. run and speed

  1275. forward

  1276. and excel

  1277. and spread

  1278. and flourish

  1279. in your life

  1280. and in the things

  1281. that are around you?

  1282. You can begin

  1283. thinking about

  1284. how to

  1285. specifically

  1286. how focused

1287. do I need to be

  1288. at asking others

  1289. to pray for me

1290. and that will help us

  1291. begin praying

  1292. in our own hearts

  1293. and our own ways

  1294. specifically in this way.

1295. when you and I pray

  1296. when you

1297. when you and I pray

  1298. we're often

  1299. too often

  1300. or we're

  1301. too often

  1302. more concerned

  1303. with our release

  1304. from the difficulties

  1305. that we find

  1306. ourselves in

  1307. and that becomes

1308. the focus of our prayer

  1309. instead of

  1310. how the Lord

  1311. is opening doors

  1312. in the midst

  1313. of our difficulties

  1314. and sorrows

  1315. and hardships

  1316. and largely

  1317. think about this

  1318. how would the Lord

  1319. get into that area

  1320. if that hardship

  1321. didn't exist?

  1322. A lot of times

1323. if you think about it

  1324. you realize

  1325. wait a minute

  1326. unless this hardship

  1327. exists

  1328. I wouldn't have

  1329. access for the gospel

  1330. here

  1331. and yet the Lord

  1332. places us

  1333. in our lives

  1334. and he placed Paul

  1335. in prison

  1336. so that the gospel

  1337. can go forward

  1338. even human attempts

  1339. to shut down

  1340. the gospel

  1341. through Paul

  1342. did not seem

  1343. to diminish

  1344. the gospel

  1345. or cause it

  1346. to stalemate

  1347. the focus

  1348. of our prayers

  1349. is the propagation

  1350. of God's word

  1351. in our midst

  1352. what is it

  1353. that you and I

  1354. pray for?

  1355. is it that God's

  1356. powerful word

  1357. would be accomplished

  1358. its end

  1359. in our life

  1360. in your needs

  1361. in your marriage

  1362. in your family

  1363. in your workplace

  1364. in your own

  1365. very heart

  1366. if not

  1367. I've got good news

  1368. for you

  1369. turn to prayer

  1370. the Lord

  1371. would love

  1372. to answer

  1373. that prayer

  1374. Lord give me

  1375. a heart

  1376. that desires

  1377. for your word

  1378. to go forward

  1379. and help me be

  1380. help me be focused

  1381. help me be targeted

1382. to see how your word

  1383. is moving

  1384. and working

  1385. in the lives

  1386. around me

1387. and in my own heart

  1388. and need to start

  1389. with me Lord

  1390. 2 Thessalonians 3

  1391. 1 says

  1392. finally brothers

  1393. pray for us

  1394. Paul's saying this

  1395. finally brothers

  1396. pray for us

  1397. that the word

  1398. of the Lord

  1399. may speed ahead

  1400. and be honored

  1401. as happened

  1402. among you

  1403. I read that

  1404. this morning

  1405. in reviewing

  1406. this sermon

  1407. and I thought

  1408. that's exactly

  1409. what's happening

  1410. at Reformed Heritage

  1411. Baptist Church

  1412. as the word

  1413. of God

  1414. is going forward

  1415. and speeding

  1416. among you

  1417. it is among us

  1418. and we can pray

  1419. for each other

  1420. in that very end

  1421. and know

  1422. that Christ

  1423. will come one day

  1424. and gather for himself

  1425. the saints

  1426. and we will be

  1427. with him in glory

  1428. we do not

  1429. have a bitter end

1430. we have a glorious end

  1431. and we can pray

  1432. with that kind

  1433. of fervency

  1434. wouldn't that

  1435. cause us to persist

  1436. in prayer

  1437. absolutely

  1438. let me give you

  1439. an example

  1440. hopefully the

  1441. children will

  1442. remember this

  1443. example

  1444. some

  1445. the kind of prayer

  1446. we'll often find

  1447. in our lives

  1448. and in the world

  1449. around us

  1450. serious opposition

  1451. this kind of prayer

  1452. that I'm speaking of

  1453. it did for Paul

1454. he ended up in prison

  1455. and it did also

  1456. for an Old Testament

1457. man that many of us

  1458. know

  1459. Daniel

  1460. you remember Daniel

  1461. the Old Testament

  1462. prophet here

  1463. it also did

  1464. it also caused

  1465. opposition and struggle

  1466. for Paul

  1467. in this way

  1468. but Daniel

  1469. Daniel did not

  1470. grow casual

  1471. or even

  1472. lean away

  1473. from prayer

  1474. but instead

  1475. the opposition

  1476. caused him

  1477. to be more

  1478. strengthened

  1479. in his prayer

  1480. Paul and Daniel

  1481. both became

  1482. more resolved

  1483. to persist

  1484. in prayer

  1485. when hardship

  1486. came

  1487. and I'll say

  1488. just as a

  1489. pastor that's been

  1490. around for a while

  1491. this breaks my heart

  1492. when a brother

  1493. or sister

  1494. that's been around

1495. for a really long time

  1496. and some just

  1497. horrendous hardship

  1498. happens in our life

  1499. and I call them

  1500. to prayer

1501. and I want to go

  1502. and pray with them

  1503. and we want to

  1504. gather around them

  1505. as a congregation

  1506. and say let's walk

  1507. together with the

  1508. Lord in this

  1509. and if the

  1510. Lord's going to

  1511. take this away

  1512. from me

  1513. I've had enough

  1514. I'm walking away

  1515. it's hard

  1516. but it happens

  1517. we pray

  1518. Lord

  1519. create

  1520. a love

  1521. for the glory

  1522. of Christ

  1523. in this person

  1524. that's greater

  1525. than the thing

  1526. that they're losing

  1527. that they think

  1528. is ultimate

  1529. and it never

  1530. should have been

  1531. the high officials

  1532. of the day

  1533. in Daniel's day

  1534. devised a plan

  1535. to remove

  1536. Daniel's influence

  1537. with the king

  1538. remember how Daniel

  1539. was able to just

  1540. go to the king

  1541. and talk to him

  1542. all the time

  1543. well the officials

  1544. didn't like that

  1545. and so

  1546. so the

  1547. the officials

  1548. wanted to

  1549. cause Daniel's

  1550. influence

  1551. to be

  1552. turned away from

  1553. and so they had

  1554. the king

  1555. issue

  1556. an injunction

  1557. against anyone

  1558. praying

  1559. except to

  1560. the king himself

  1561. the king

  1562. signed this

  1563. injunction

  1564. thinking

  1565. this is a great

  1566. idea

  1567. the only

  1568. one that

  1569. anybody in my

  1570. kingdom can pray

  1571. to is me

  1572. that's what

  1573. the king

  1574. thought

  1575. Daniel 6

  1576. 10 says

  1577. this

  1578. when Daniel

  1579. knew

  1580. that the

  1581. document

  1582. had been

  1583. signed

  1584. he went

  1585. to his

  1586. house

  1587. where he

  1588. had windows

  1589. where he

  1590. had his

  1591. windows

  1592. in the

  1593. upper

  1594. chamber

  1595. open

  1596. toward

  1597. Jerusalem

  1598. and he

  1599. got down

  1600. on his

  1601. knees

  1602. three times

  1603. a day

  1604. and prayed

  1605. and gave

  1606. thanks

  1607. before his

  1608. God

  1609. I find it

  1610. so interesting

  1611. that Daniel

  1612. 6

  1613. 1 says

  1614. that

  1615. when Daniel

  1616. knew

  1617. that the

  1618. document

  1619. had been

  1620. signed

  1621. this is

  1622. going to

  1623. cost me

  1624. my life

  1625. but I'm

  1626. going to

  1627. pray

  1628. I simply

  1629. wanted to

  1630. mention this

  1631. example to

  1632. say that

  1633. when Paul

  1634. is calling

  1635. us here

  1636. in our

  1637. text

  1638. is nothing

  1639. less than

  1640. what his

  1641. people were

  1642. called to

  1643. throughout the

  1644. history of

  1645. the church

  1646. that diligent

  1647. fervent

  1648. prayer

  1649. and it'll

  1650. never come

  1651. easy

  1652. the reason

  1653. you don't

  1654. pray like

  1655. you want

  1656. to isn't

  1657. because of

  1658. your schedule

  1659. it isn't

  1660. because of

  1661. your due

  1662. list

  1663. it isn't

  1664. because of

  1665. the family

  1666. the Lord

  1667. placed you

  1668. in

  1669. it isn't

  1670. because of

  1671. your boss

  1672. it isn't

  1673. because of

  1674. your surroundings

  1675. it's because

  1676. prayer is war

  1677. and we're

  1678. going before

  1679. our God

  1680. asking him

  1681. to confront

  1682. the principalities

  1683. of the air

  1684. only those

  1685. who see

  1686. this utter

  1687. emptiness

  1688. and lack

  1689. and desperately

  1690. long for

  1691. more of

  1692. Christ

  1693. to satisfy

  1694. the lack

  1695. in their

  1696. own souls

  1697. and the

  1698. souls of

  1699. those around

  1700. them

  1701. will pray

  1702. Psalm 16

  1703. 1 and 2

  1704. preserve me

  1705. O God

  1706. for in you

  1707. I take refuge

  1708. I say to

  1709. the Lord

  1710. you are my

  1711. Lord

  1712. listen to this

  1713. last part

  1714. I have

  1715. no good

  1716. apart from

  1717. you

  1718. I have no

  1719. good

  1720. apart from

  1721. you

  1722. Psalm 16

  1723. 11

  1724. you make

  1725. known to me

  1726. the path

  1727. of life

  1728. in your

  1729. presence

  1730. there is

  1731. fullness of

  1732. joy

  1733. and at

  1734. your right

  1735. hand

  1736. are pleasures

  1737. forevermore

  1738. do you

  1739. believe that

  1740. do you

  1741. believe that

  1742. I know you

  1743. know it

  1744. I know you've

  1745. heard it

  1746. does your soul

  1747. believe that

  1748. pray

  1749. Psalm 16

    Psalms 16:11

  1750. verse 11

  1751. ask the Lord

  1752. to give you

  1753. that heart

  1754. again

  1755. many of us

  1756. would say

  1757. Lord give me

  1758. that again

  1759. I remember

  1760. when my heart

  1761. was there

  1762. give it to me

  1763. again

  1764. the second

  1765. point is

  1766. going to be

  1767. shorter

  1768. but let me

  1769. jump in

  1770. here

  1771. walk wisely

  1772. toward outsiders

  1773. and this is

  1774. verses 5

  1775. and 6

  1776. we will be

  1777. sustained in the

  1778. preeminence of

  1779. Christ in our

  1780. lives and those

  1781. around us

  1782. through our

  1783. prayers

  1784. our speaking

  1785. with the

  1786. Lord

  1787. having become

  1788. steadfast

  1789. watchful and

  1790. focused in our

  1791. prayers

  1792. then we are

  1793. able to

  1794. live and

  1795. speak with

  1796. those outside

  1797. of the church

  1798. faithfully

  1799. and best

  1800. we see here

  1801. in verse 5

  1802. those who

  1803. trusted Christ

  1804. in this

  1805. small

  1806. congregation

  1807. in this

  1808. big town

  1809. of

  1810. Colossae

  1811. opposed

  1812. those that

  1813. are in the

  1814. town

  1815. opposed

  1816. Christ

  1817. and his

  1818. teaching

  1819. big town

  1820. little bitty

  1821. congregation

  1822. do you know

  1823. what I'm

  1824. talking about

  1825. do you get

  1826. an idea

  1827. of what I'm

  1828. talking about

  1829. big town

  1830. that's opposed

  1831. to the gospel

  1832. and the things

  1833. of Christ

  1834. little congregation

  1835. man that can

  1836. feel overwhelming

  1837. that can feel

  1838. like man what

  1839. are we doing

  1840. this is just

  1841. a drop

  1842. in an ocean

  1843. the Colossian

  1844. congregation

  1845. were the

  1846. minority

  1847. for sure

  1848. so Paul

  1849. was calling

  1850. them to

  1851. live wisely

  1852. toward those

  1853. that are

  1854. outside

  1855. the church

  1856. not to

  1857. beat them

  1858. up

  1859. not to

  1860. berate

  1861. them

  1862. not to

  1863. go after

  1864. them

  1865. not to

  1866. criticize

  1867. them

  1868. no

  1869. instead

  1870. notice

  1871. what it

  1872. says

  1873. here

  1874. walk in

  1875. wisdom

  1876. toward

  1877. outsiders

  1878. you see

  1879. that there

  1880. in our

  1881. passage

  1882. it's

  1883. important

  1884. to

  1885. understand

  1886. that our

  1887. days

  1888. are few

  1889. and thus

  1890. we need

  1891. to

  1892. according to

  1893. our passage

  1894. look at

  1895. it again

  1896. make the

  1897. best use

  1898. of the

  1899. time

  1900. this

  1901. phrase

  1902. has

  1903. the idea

  1904. of buying

  1905. up

  1906. time

  1907. time

  1908. and now

  1909. some of

  1910. you

  1911. who

  1912. are

  1913. of my

  1914. age

  1915. or maybe

  1916. a little

  1917. older

  1918. that have

  1919. that were

  1920. weaned and

  1921. grew up on

  1922. the treasured

  1923. King James

  1924. version of the

  1925. Bible

  1926. and memorize

  1927. most of your

  1928. scripture memory

  1929. verses are in

  1930. King James

  1931. I still

  1932. most of my

  1933. scripture memory

  1934. I go

  1935. I revert back

  1936. to King James

  1937. and that's a

  1938. good thing

  1939. but the King

  1940. James translation

  1941. says and I

  1942. think they speak

  1943. of it better

  1944. here

  1945. of this

  1946. idea of

  1947. buying back

  1948. our time

  1949. it says here

  1950. the King

  1951. James says

  1952. redeeming the

  1953. time

  1954. instead of

  1955. make the

  1956. best use

  1957. of the

  1958. time

  1959. we're to

  1960. live as if

  1961. every moment

  1962. counts

  1963. we should

  1964. not waste

  1965. our moments

  1966. without considering

  1967. how they

  1968. should be

  1969. used

  1970. under

  1971. the rule

  1972. reign and

  1973. lordship

  1974. and preeminence

  1975. of Christ

  1976. back when

  1977. there was

  1978. this

  1979. there used

  1980. to be

  1981. these things

  1982. called

  1983. checkbooks

  1984. and I

  1985. was in

  1986. high school

  1987. and in

  1988. college

  1989. and in

  1990. seminary

  1991. and I

  1992. wrote

  1993. redeeming

  1994. the time

  1995. at the

  1996. top of

  1997. my

  1998. checkbook

  1999. because I

  2000. not only

  2001. wanted to

  2002. redeem

  2003. my time

  2004. but I

  2005. wanted to

  2006. redeem

  2007. my time

  2008. as carefully

  2009. and hopefully

  2010. as willingly

  2011. as I was

  2012. trying to

  2013. redeem my

  2014. money

  2015. and keep

  2016. it

  2017. make every

  2018. cent count

  2019. make every

  2020. moment

  2021. count

  2022. we are to

  2023. live as if

  2024. every moment

  2025. counts

  2026. we should

  2027. not waste

  2028. any of our

  2029. moments

  2030. we should

  2031. know that

  2032. we are

  2033. indeed

  2034. serving

  2035. our

  2036. lord

  2037. what does

  2038. lord mean

  2039. what does

  2040. lord mean

  2041. does lord

  2042. mean

  2043. I come to

  2044. church on

  2045. sunday

  2046. and man

  2047. he is

  2048. thankful for

  2049. that

  2050. and I'm

  2051. so glad

  2052. that god's

  2053. thankful for

  2054. that

  2055. because

  2056. he's

  2057. lord

  2058. but then

  2059. you can

  2060. live your

  2061. life

  2062. any way

  2063. you want

  2064. to

  2065. the rest

  2066. of the

  2067. week

  2068. no

  2069. lord

  2070. means

  2071. that the

  2072. lord

  2073. god

  2074. in

  2075. heaven

  2076. the

  2077. maker

  2078. of

  2079. all

  2080. things

  2081. visible

  2082. and

  2083. invisible

  2084. reigns

  2085. he rules

  2086. he has lordship

2087. and here's the word from Colossians

  2088. preeminence over all things

  2089. in heaven and earth

2090. why should we walk wisely

  2091. we should walk wisely

  2092. because the outside world

2093. doesn't want us to flourish

  2094. in the gospel

  2095. never think

  2096. that they do

2097. they would like for us to be nice

2098. but they don't want us to flourish

  2099. in the exclusivity

  2100. of Jesus Christ

  2101. alone

  2102. as our savior

  2103. and lord

  2104. of heaven and earth

  2105. second

2106. we need to be wise

  2107. because we are foolish

  2108. often

  2109. we're going to

  2110. foolishly

  2111. make decisions

  2112. and go after things

2113. that are not bad things

2114. that are not wicked things

  2115. at all

  2116. but they're not best

  2117. for the flourishing

  2118. of the gospel

  2119. and of Christ

  2120. in our lives

  2121. and others

  2122. we have

  2123. families in our church

  2124. great families

  2125. they are living close

  2126. to our congregation

2127. living close to the actual

  2128. facility where we

  2129. where we worship

  2130. and they struggle

  2131. with getting the church

  2132. on time

  2133. now people have

  2134. names of people

  2135. in this church

  2136. that do that

  2137. I know you do

  2138. you got that person

2139. in your mind right now

  2140. aren't you glad

  2141. they're here

  2142. I mean it's a little later

  2143. but they're still here

  2144. and that's good

  2145. we love them

2146. we have people in our church

  2147. that show up

2148. show up a little later

  2149. and they

  2150. find this really

  2151. really great house

  2152. two hours away

  2153. that's going to be

  2154. a wonderful

  2155. plenty of land

  2156. all this wonderful

  2157. blessings

  2158. and I've got this

  2159. and I've got this

2160. and we can invite people over

2161. and it's going to be great

  2162. but you're moving

  2163. two hours away

  2164. and you already

  2165. have a hard time

  2166. getting here already

2167. is that a bad thing

  2168. for you to do?

  2169. no

  2170. but let's act wisely

  2171. now I'm not saying

  2172. you should do it

2173. or you shouldn't do it

2174. you should hear what I'm saying

  2175. I'm simply saying

  2176. that so often

2177. we take things that are good

  2178. and are blessings

  2179. and are for us

  2180. and we don't measure

2181. is this going to cause

  2182. my family and I

2183. to flourish in the gospel

  2184. wisely

2185. or is this an unwise decision

2186. even though it may not be

  2187. a bad decision

  2188. and then thirdly

2189. the reason we need to be wise

  2190. in our age

  2191. is because

  2192. by seeking to

  2193. by seeking to influence

  2194. or be around

  2195. those that are

  2196. in the world today

  2197. you and I

  2198. have every

  2199. every ability

  2200. to allow the world

  2201. to influence us

2202. more than the scriptures do

  2203. we have every ability

  2204. to allow the world

  2205. to begin

  2206. influencing

  2207. our thinking

  2208. and our thoughts

  2209. and our ambitions

  2210. and our aims

  2211. and brothers and sisters

  2212. they may be again

  2213. good things

  2214. that the world

2215. is asking you to do

  2216. that isn't bad

2217. but it's not rooted in

  2218. a treasuring

2219. of the glory of Christ

2220. and so consider those things

2221. I'm asking you to be wise here

2222. and here Paul is asking us

  2223. to live wisely

  2224. because the world

  2225. that's around us

  2226. those outsiders

  2227. they aren't just simply

  2228. going to be neutral

  2229. in and around us

  2230. Ephesians 5

  2231. 16 says

2232. making the best use of time

  2233. why?

2234. because the days are evil

2235. that's really what I was speaking of

2236. there in that last point

  2237. verse 6

2238. we see that our speech

  2239. is to be seasoned

  2240. as we walk wisely

2241. among those who do not claim Christ

2242. we are not only to be judicious

  2243. with our time

2244. but we are to be

  2245. persuasive

  2246. with our words

  2247. look at verse 6

  2248. let your speech

  2249. always be gracious

  2250. seasoned with salt

2251. so that you may know

2252. how you ought to answer

  2253. each person

2254. we see a couple of aspects

  2255. of this persuasion

  2256. in our text

  2257. first we notice

  2258. that the speech

2259. is to always be gracious

  2260. I take this

  2261. phrase

  2262. not simply to mean

  2263. that our speech

  2264. should be nice

  2265. or kind

  2266. but instead

  2267. convincing and compelling

2268. I think this is why

  2269. Paul

  2270. goes on

  2271. to give us

  2272. a metaphor

  2273. for this gracious speech

  2274. our speech

  2275. should be always

  2276. gracious

  2277. like

  2278. seasoned with salt

  2279. you see that there

  2280. in other words

  2281. influential

  2282. eloquent

  2283. compelling

  2284. and attractive

2285. this is how our speech

  2286. is to be

  2287. how will our speech

  2288. be like this

  2289. because mine isn't

  2290. I'm the bull

  2291. in the china cabinet

  2292. a china

  2293. china broom

  2294. right

  2295. I just

  2296. plow through

  2297. too often

  2298. and I'm not

  2299. careful

  2300. and gracious

  2301. how can we be

  2302. gracious in our speech

  2303. listen to me

  2304. as one who has

  2305. failed

  2306. many times

2307. and I can give you

  2308. plenty of advice

  2309. on this

  2310. only when we are

  2311. gripped by the grace

  2312. that we've been shown

  2313. only when we've been

  2314. convinced that

  2315. you know what

2316. the reason I'm not there

  2317. is because my

  2318. my savior showed me

  2319. grace and mercy

  2320. and so therefore

2321. I need to be showing

  2322. grace and mercy

  2323. as you and I

  2324. become more enthralled

  2325. and captivated

  2326. by Christ

  2327. the cross

  2328. the gospel

  2329. and the lavish grace

  2330. we have been

  2331. we have been shown

  2332. in Christ

  2333. only then

  2334. will we speak rightly

  2335. do you see how

  2336. we seldom walk wisely

  2337. by letting our speech

  2338. be influential

  2339. compelling

2340. and worthy of the one

2341. that we are speaking of

  2342. our words are rarely

  2343. seasoned with salt

  2344. why

  2345. because we have not

  2346. spent the time

  2347. continuing in steadfast

  2348. prayer and watchfulness

  2349. and thankfulness

  2350. that I spoke of

  2351. just a minute ago

  2352. see how Paul is

  2353. bringing these two

  2354. things together

  2355. until we do this

  2356. we will know

  2357. be gripped

  2358. be captivated

  2359. to be fixed by

  2360. fixed on

  2361. our joy in Christ

  2362. and his rich grace

  2363. that he has lavished

  2364. upon us

  2365. next

  2366. next our wise speech

  2367. is to be based

  2368. on knowledge

2369. of not only God's grace

  2370. in Christ

  2371. but also

  2372. a knowledge

  2373. of the individual person

  2374. we are talking to

  2375. and this is frustrating

  2376. our congregation

  2377. are full of people

  2378. that are

  2379. sometimes

  2380. not all that lovely

  2381. how about yours

  2382. right

  2383. sometimes

  2384. Nick and I

  2385. annoy the stew

  2386. out of each other

2387. we did that this week

  2388. and we will continue

  2389. to do that

  2390. and yet know that

  2391. you know what

2392. we are going to love

  2393. each other

  2394. because that is what

2395. God has called us to do

  2396. we are to

2397. lean into one of those lives

  2398. and that means

  2399. the messed up lives

  2400. that you've got

  2401. sitting around you

2402. and the messed up life

2403. that you have in your own heart

  2404. and you're not

2405. let me help you here

  2406. you do know

2407. that God has not called you

  2408. to fix the people

  2409. that are around you

  2410. he's not called you

  2411. to do that

  2412. the gospel does that

  2413. Christ does that

  2414. you are the

  2415. the person

  2416. just as broken

  2417. as the one sitting

  2418. beside you

  2419. even though you're

2420. not quite convinced of that

  2421. and you're the one

  2422. that can bring

  2423. that beggar bread

  2424. as another beggar

  2425. and says

  2426. here

  2427. eat of this

  2428. eat of this gospel

  2429. let's cherish

  2430. Christ together

  2431. and so

  2432. our wise speech

  2433. is based not only

  2434. on knowledge

2435. of the grace of God

  2436. but also knowledge

  2437. of the individual person

  2438. that we're walking with

  2439. and to

  2440. here we find

  2441. that Paul is calling

  2442. this church

  2443. to be gracious

  2444. and careful

  2445. to answer each person

  2446. uniquely

  2447. not simply

  2448. to bark out

  2449. bite sound bites

  2450. or to simply

  2451. declare one's position

  2452. with more force

  2453. or more volume

  2454. or more demeaning banter

  2455. aka

  2456. we're not going to

  2457. reach the world

  2458. by podcast

  2459. the person that is

  2460. doing all the amazing

  2461. wonderful things

  2462. online

  2463. that's convincing

  2464. all these people

  2465. in the church

  2466. to be whatever

2467. they are going to be

  2468. it's easy

  2469. when that's happening

  2470. because I don't have

  2471. to rub elbows

  2472. with those people

  2473. that are

  2474. no no

  2475. this is where

  2476. God's called you

  2477. to be sanctified

  2478. and to grow

  2479. and to be nourished

  2480. because it's one thing

  2481. to understand

  2482. the particular

  2483. atonement of Christ

  2484. it's another thing

2485. to teach your five year old

  2486. what it means

  2487. for Christ

  2488. to love us

  2489. with steadfast love

  2490. and faithfulness

  2491. that endures

  2492. to the mountains

  2493. so

  2494. we're to learn

  2495. each other

  2496. we're to grow

  2497. and be more careful

  2498. to understand

  2499. one another

  2500. what is required

  2501. in giving an answer

  2502. to each other

  2503. it requires

  2504. listening to individuals

  2505. we're to be courageous

  2506. enough to listen

  2507. that we might

  2508. as it says here

  2509. answer each person

  2510. do you see that

  2511. here in our text

  2512. with dignity

  2513. for that person

  2514. and confidence

  2515. in the word

  2516. I fail here

  2517. I talk so much

  2518. as a preacher

  2519. that when I'm in

  2520. the presence of people

  2521. I get to going

  2522. and I can't hush

2523. so I tell the church

  2524. on the occasion

  2525. people

2526. hey tell me to hush

  2527. when we're talking

2528. tell me to stop talking

  2529. to let others

  2530. be able to share

  2531. and that's a blessing

  2532. that last page

  2533. of Owen's work

2534. on the glory of Christ

  2535. says

  2536. this

2537. how are we going to

  2538. persevere

  2539. most of our

  2540. spiritual

  2541. excuse me

  2542. most of our

  2543. spiritual decays

  2544. Owen says

  2545. our troubles

  2546. the barrenness

  2547. and the laziness

  2548. of our lives

  2549. arise from

  2550. an inordinate

  2551. admission

  2552. of other things

  2553. into our minds

  2554. in other words

  2555. guess what

  2556. one of the greatest

  2557. enemies

  2558. that we have

  2559. that Satan

  2560. launches at us

  2561. here it is

  2562. distraction

  2563. this

  2564. or excuse me

  2565. these

  2566. weaken grace

  2567. in all its operations

  2568. but when the mind

  2569. is filled

  2570. with the thoughts

  2571. of Christ

  2572. and his glory

  2573. when the soul

  2574. cleaves to him

  2575. with intense

  2576. affections

  2577. they will cast out

  2578. or not give

  2579. admittance to

  2580. those causes

  2581. of spiritual

  2582. weakness

  2583. and disorder

  2584. how might we be

  2585. sustained

  2586. for a fervent

  2587. life in Christ

  2588. cherishing him

  2589. as preeminent

  2590. in all things

  2591. we look to Christ

  2592. we fill our thoughts

  2593. with his glory

  2594. and survey

  2595. the wondrous cross

2596. in all of its wrath

  2597. receiving

  2598. sorrow
