  1. Good morning everyone. We're going to continue reading the full passage of what we just looked at.

  2. So it's 1 Corinthians chapter 1 verse 18 and we're going to read all the way to chapter 2 and verse 5.

    1 Corinthians 1:18

  3. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,

  4. but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

  5. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,

  6. the intelligence of the intelligent, I will frustrate.

  7. Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law?

  8. Where is the philosopher of this age?

  9. Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

  10. For since in the wisdom of God the world, through its wisdom, did not know him,

  11. God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.

  12. Jews demand science and Greeks look for wisdom.

  13. But we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.

  14. But to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God.

  15. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom,

  16. and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

  17. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called.

  18. Not many of you were wise by human standards.

  19. Not many were influential.

  20. Not many were of noble birth.

  21. But God chose the foolish things of this world to shame the wise.

  22. God chose the weak things of this world to shame the strong.

  23. God chose the lowly things of this world,

  24. and the despised things and the things that are not,

  25. to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.

  26. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus,

  27. who has become for us the wisdom of God,

  28. that is our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.

  29. Therefore, as it is written,

  30. let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.

  31. Chapter 2.

  32. And so it was for me, brothers and sisters,

  33. when I came to you,

  34. I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom,

  35. as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God.

  36. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you,

  37. except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

  38. I came to you in weakness, with great fear and trembling.

  39. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words,

  40. but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power,

  41. so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom,

  42. but on God's power.

  43. Amen.

  44. Well, over the next few weeks,

  45. we're going to spend some time thinking about seven different things,

  46. which are really important for us as a church.

  47. Seven marks, if you like, of what church life should be like.

  48. And the first one this week is about being cross-centered,

  49. and we're going to look at that passage together.

  50. So let me pray as we do that.

  51. Heavenly Father, we do thank you

  52. that you have spoken through your word, the Bible,

  53. by your Spirit in our hearts as we listen.

  54. And we pray, please, this morning,

  55. that you might help us to understand what you've written,

  56. that we might listen carefully and thoughtfully,

  57. that you might be at work in us,

  58. not only as individuals, but also as a church family.

  59. And we pray in Jesus' name.

  60. Amen.

  61. Well, on June the 22nd,

  62. which I think was the week before last, wasn't it?

  63. It marked 75 years since the docking of HMT Empire Windrush

  64. at the Tilbury Docks in Essex.

  65. And I think there's a picture of that.

  66. On that day, 492 passengers from the Caribbean

  67. disembarked to begin a new life in Britain,

  68. arriving here on the invitation of Britain,

  69. but finding that the country that had invited them

  70. did a very poor job of welcoming them.

  71. So begins the famous story of the Windrush Generations.

  72. And there's been celebrations, haven't there,

  73. around Brent and Westminster I've seen,

  74. cycling around,

  75. as the significance of that story.

  76. Now, I know that that story is personal to many of you.

  77. It has a profound impact, doesn't it,

  78. on the identity of many people

  79. and their experience of life.

  80. Because here's the wider principle, okay?

  81. Here's the wider principle.

  82. It's stories of origins and history

  83. that understand how we shape our identity.

  84. And I think if you can click onto the next slide.

  85. Stories of origins and history

  86. that shape how we understand who we are.

  87. In other words, I am who I am

  88. because of where I am from

  89. or because of what has happened to me

  90. or because of what has happened to those

  91. who are like me along the way.

  92. Now, I want to suggest to you,

  93. if that's true this morning

  94. because of Windrush

  95. or because of the history of where you're from

  96. or where I'm from

  97. or where you went to school

  98. or I went to school

  99. or what happened to my family before I came along,

  100. then I want to suggest to you,

  101. if you're a Christian this morning,

  102. then there is an even bigger story,

  103. a bigger history, if you like,

  104. that shapes all of our identities.

  105. Not because those other things don't matter.

  106. They have their own significance, don't they?

  107. It's because this is more significant

  108. and even bigger than any of those histories.

  109. There is an action of God in history

  110. which transforms who I am,

  111. shapes all of my identity,

  112. something which forms the very center

  113. of the Christian identity,

  114. which is not based on what I've done,

  115. but what God has done.

  116. And that's the cross.

  117. Click the next slide.

  118. So every week as a church,

  119. we are going to gather

  120. and retell the story of the cross,

  121. the story of God the Son in human flesh,

  122. giving his life in our place,

  123. bearing our sin that we might be forgiven,

  124. a story of a God who is rich in love,

  125. full of grace and truth,

  126. who moves towards the world that he has made,

  127. not as we might imagine

  128. in an awesome display of raw power,

  129. raw power,

  130. not moving towards his creation

  131. in dictating a book to a warrior in a cave,

  132. not even moving towards his creation

  133. in the silence of a meditating monk.

  134. More miraculous than any of that,

  135. God moving towards the world that he's made

  136. by becoming one of us

  137. in the person of the Son.

  138. Jesus, fully God and fully man,

  139. coming not to be served,

  140. but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.

  141. Now, I want to suggest to you this morning

  142. that so significant is that event

  143. and the history of it

  144. and the message of that event,

  145. that if you're a Christian this morning,

  146. before you are anything else,

  147. you're a child of the cross,

  148. forgiven, loved, accepted, secure,

  149. eternally alive,

  150. because in our place, condemned he stood,

  151. sealed our pardon with his blood.

  152. That's our shared history, isn't it?

  153. It's why when you come to 1 Corinthians,

  154. and look down at that if you've still got it open,

  155. when you come to 1 Corinthians,

  156. you find a church that is struggling and divided,

  157. and the Apostle Paul seeks to answer their struggles

  158. and their troubles,

  159. not so much by addressing them specifically.

  160. It's ages before he really comes on

  161. to give any clear answers

  162. to the questions they're asking.

  163. Rather, he starts by retelling them

  164. the story of the cross

  165. and why his ministry is all about the cross.

  166. And so for the time we've got together this morning,

  167. I want us to look carefully at what Paul says here

  168. and so that we can see

  169. what does it mean for us as a church

  170. to be cross-centered?

  171. What does it mean for us as a church

  172. to have this shared identity

  173. of being children of the cross of Christ?

  174. What does it mean for us as a church family

  175. to be like that?

  176. And I want to start with three things

  177. that it does not mean

  178. and then give you three things that it does mean.

  179. I know that's slightly counterintuitive,

  180. but it might keep your attention this morning.

  181. Okay, so three things that it does not mean.

  182. And there should be a slide for each of these, Neva,

  183. so here we go.

  184. Oh, she's chivvying me along.

  185. Being cross-centered does not mean being impressive.

  186. Just look down at the passage

  187. and look at verse 17,

  188. just before the section that Jen read for us.

  189. Paul is describing his own ministry

  190. among the Corinthian church

  191. and says in verse 17

  192. that it wasn't with wisdom or eloquence.

  193. Literally, it was not with word of wisdom.

  194. And that's because verse 18,

  195. the message of the cross,

  196. appears foolish and not impressive.

  197. Now, it's not hard, is it,

  198. to see why Paul says this?

  199. Think about it.

  200. At the center of Paul's ministry,

  201. at the heart of the church in Corinth

  202. that he started,

  203. is the news of a man hanging naked

  204. and dying on a Roman cross.

  205. A man facing the most shameful death, no.

  206. But a man who, Paul says,

  207. should now be worshipped as divine.

  208. There's a famous bit of ancient Roman graffiti,

  209. which is teasing a guy called Alex Aminos.

  210. I don't know whether you've seen it.

  211. There's a slide of it.

  212. Alex was obviously a Christian,

  213. and the person who scratched the graffiti

  214. paints a picture of him in front of a cross

  215. where there's a man with the head of a donkey.

  216. And the graffiti says,

  217. which you might not be able to read the graffiti,

  218. it says,

  219. Alex Aminos worships his God, it says.

  220. It's teasing it, isn't it?

  221. What a foolish thing.

  222. Imagine worshipping a guy dying on a cross.

  223. It's ancient kind of satire.

  224. But if we're honest,

  225. it's not just the first century Romans

  226. who thought the cross was stupid.

  227. It's the same today.

  228. Imagine tomorrow morning,

  229. you're in a conversation with a colleague or a neighbor,

  230. and they ask you that sort of unlikely question.

  231. I'm trying to think about identity

  232. and what it means to be me.

  233. They're never going to ask that, are they?

  234. But you just imagine that they do.

  235. And you say to them,

  236. I'm so pleased you asked that question.

  237. We were talking about that very thing at church yesterday.

  238. My identity is all about

  239. a guy who hung dead on a Roman cross.

  240. What are they going to say?

  241. They're going to think you're crazy, aren't they?

  242. I mean, if you say,

  243. oh, no, actually for me,

  244. it's all about living by Jesus values.

  245. Well, they might recognize that, might they?

  246. They say, oh, yes, yeah,

  247. do to others as you would have them do to you.

  248. I think that's a great thing for your identity to be in,

  249. a great thing for you to live by.

  250. But as soon as you say,

  251. no, no, my identity is in the blood and the gore of the cross,

  252. that's a bit weird, isn't it?

  253. Very impressive.

  254. And here's the rub then for us as a church.

  255. We can either be, as a church,

  256. we can either be impressive,

  257. or we can be cross-centered.

  258. It can't be both.

  259. It can't be both.

  260. We can either choose to gather and tell the story of all of our achievements,

  261. what we've done,

  262. how well things are working out for us,

  263. and how hard we're working,

  264. or we can choose to gather around the story of what Christ has done on the cross.

  265. So which will it be for us?

  266. Impressiveness or the cross?

  267. Now, I know, because you're all good Christian people, aren't you?

  268. And, oh, of course, we want to be people of the cross.

  269. We don't want to be impressive like that.

  270. We want to be people of the cross.

  271. But how would you tell if you were people of the cross?

  272. It's easy.

  273. When you get home,

  274. ask yourself what you were most pleased with at church today.

  275. Was it that it ran smoothly?

  276. That we didn't start too late?

  277. That Steve wore a shirt instead of a t-shirt?

  278. That was a good thing for him to do.

  279. Or is it that you were left with the very clear idea

  280. that your only hope in life and death

  281. is what Jesus has done for you

  282. and not anything you've done for yourself?

  283. Second thing that a cross-centered church is not,

  284. it is not logical.

  285. It is not logical.

  286. Look again at the passage.

  287. Look down at verse 19.

  288. Here, Paul, talking about the message of the cross,

  289. says that it destroys the wisdom of the wise

  290. and the intelligence of the intelligent.

  291. So much so that he says, verse 20,

  292. where is the wise person?

  293. He says, they've gone.

  294. Where is the teacher of the law?

  295. Literally, the Jewish scribe.

  296. They've gone too.

  297. Where is the philosopher of this age?

  298. Where's the expert of the times?

  299. Where's the professor who knows what they're talking about?

  300. Well, she's gone as well.

  301. Nowhere to be seen.

  302. Beginning of verse 21 sums it up.

  303. Let me read it to you again.

  304. For since in the wisdom of God,

  305. the world through its wisdom did not know him.

  306. Here's the point.

  307. The message of the cross,

  308. being cross-centered as a church,

  309. is the opposite of what you would be by nature.

  310. And it doesn't matter whether you're from a religious background,

  311. like the scribe,

  312. or from a secular background,

  313. like the philosopher.

  314. The message of the cross is so countered to the way that we think,

  315. that we wouldn't,

  316. given all the time in the world,

  317. we wouldn't have dreamt it up.

  318. Why?

  319. Well, because the cross defies human logic.

  320. How so?

  321. Well, because the cross doesn't say the sort of things that we think.

  322. The cross doesn't say,

  323. do you know what?

  324. Work really hard and God will bless you.

  325. It doesn't say that.

  326. It doesn't say,

  327. you know,

  328. sort out your life

  329. and God might then be interested in you.

  330. It doesn't say,

  331. you know,

  332. listen,

  333. you've got this.

  334. Just dig deep,

  335. be mindful,

  336. live in the moment,

  337. be the best version of you

  338. and everything will be okay.

  339. The cross-centered church doesn't even say,

  340. you're a wretched sinner

  341. and you spend the rest of your life feeling terrible about it.

  342. It doesn't say that.

  343. Instead,

  344. the cross-centered church says something

  345. that we wouldn't have dreamt up

  346. given all the time in the world.

  347. It says this,

  348. that at the heart of the universe,

  349. the glorious God who made us,

  350. the one who in his eternal brilliance

  351. did himself not need to be made,

  352. that God loves sinners,

  353. loves them.

  354. And not with like a kind of passing affection or pity,

  355. but in a love that willingly gives himself up for them

  356. in the person of the sun,

  357. in his human nature,

  358. dying on a cross.

  359. And you say,

  360. when you understand that,

  361. that makes absolutely no sense.

  362. Why would the God who did not need to be made

  363. become one of us in the person of the sun

  364. and give himself on the cross?

  365. The people unlovely like us

  366. makes no sense.

  367. And when you say that,

  368. you go,

  369. I'm beginning to get it.

  370. That's exactly right.

  371. The cross makes no logical sense.

  372. It's the opposite of what we would think.

  373. Honestly,

  374. I think this is one of the reasons

  375. that you can be sure that the gospel is true.

  376. If you're sitting here this morning,

  377. I've got loads of doubts.

  378. I'm not sure whether this is true.

  379. Well,

  380. I think one of the reasons you can be confident

  381. that this is true

  382. is it's the opposite of what you would think by nature.

  383. You know,

  384. when you come up with something yourself,

  385. when you tell a story

  386. that's not quite true

  387. and you're inventing it yourself,

  388. you always come out really well

  389. out of that story.

  390. Have you noticed that?

  391. The stories we make up always flatter us.

  392. You know,

  393. gods that we make up

  394. are ones that are like superheroes

  395. or ones that make us like superheroes.

  396. You know,

  397. they're distant gods

  398. and they're approached

  399. by acts of great righteousness by us.

  400. Oh,

  401. well,

  402. if I come and pray or I fast,

  403. then God will be impressed.

  404. Those are the gods that we make up.

  405. You know,

  406. if I say the right prayers

  407. at the right time

  408. or I wear the right things,

  409. that then God will be pleased with me.

  410. But the God who's real,

  411. there's nothing like that at all.

  412. Because the God who is real

  413. has an inhuman love for his people.

  414. And in the person of the son,

  415. he goes to the cross for them.

  416. And that's not logical.

  417. Okay,

  418. the final thing

  419. that a cross-centered church is not,

  420. a cross-centered church is not appealing.

  421. Appealing.

  422. Again,

  423. look back at the passage.

  424. Look at verse 23.

  425. What's the instinctive response

  426. of the Jews

  427. and the Gentiles

  428. to this cross-centered ministry of Paul's?

  429. What does he say?

  430. It's a stumbling block to Jews.

  431. They trip over it

  432. and it's foolishness to Gentiles.

  433. Here the sentence is that the Jews,

  434. they trip over the message of the cross.

  435. There's something about the gospel

  436. which causes them to fall over.

  437. We've seen it already.

  438. Religious people fall over

  439. or trip over the gospel

  440. because it offends

  441. their sense of self-righteousness.

  442. Religion says,

  443. do this and God will love you.

  444. The gospel says,

  445. God loves you

  446. already

  447. in Christ.

  448. The gospel tells religious people,

  449. listen,

  450. you are way worse than you thought

  451. because you cannot cover it

  452. with your works

  453. and tells them at the same time,

  454. you are loved

  455. way more than you ever dreamt

  456. because God is more loving

  457. to sinners than you ever imagined.

  458. The religion of the Jews

  459. was about status

  460. and heritage

  461. and moral performance

  462. and the message of the cross

  463. is about humility,

  464. undeserved kindness

  465. and owning up to your sin

  466. and it's unappealing to them.

  467. So it is to religious people today.

  468. The message of the cross

  469. is no help to someone

  470. who is convinced

  471. that they're able to earn God's love.

  472. And for the Gentile

  473. which is literally

  474. the nations,

  475. the rest of the world,

  476. the gospel is unappealing

  477. because it just sounds nonsense.

  478. It sounds crazy.

  479. Who would believe that,

  480. they say.

  481. Now there's loads more

  482. that we can say from the passage.

  483. We're going to say a bit more

  484. but hopefully you can see

  485. that being cross-centered

  486. as a church,

  487. having the cross of Jesus

  488. at the center of our identity

  489. as a church and as individuals,

  490. the story that we're going to tell

  491. week in and week out,

  492. that is not a recipe

  493. for worldly success.

  494. In other words,

  495. preaching Christ crucified,

  496. shaping our church life

  497. around that message,

  498. discussing it in small groups,

  499. teaching it to the young people,

  500. singing about the cross

  501. when we gather together,

  502. praying in line with the cross,

  503. understanding our identity

  504. in the face of the cross of Christ,

  505. none of that is going to make us popular.

  506. If we want popularity,

  507. we need to teach rules

  508. or self-help.

  509. Those are the options.

  510. And we need to sing things like,

  511. I am dynamite or whatever it is,

  512. but not in Christ alone.

  513. Let me say,

  514. this is why being cross-centered

  515. as a church is so difficult.

  516. Being cross-centered as a church

  517. and as an individual

  518. is not complicated.

  519. It's really, really simple.

  520. It's difficult

  521. because there's an aversion

  522. in each of us against it.

  523. We will hate the unpopularity

  524. that it will bring.

  525. We'll resist the fact

  526. that it will bring out

  527. the worst in us

  528. and the best in God.

  529. We will long for something

  530. more palatable,

  531. easier to sell,

  532. a quicker fix.

  533. Because being cross-centered

  534. is not what?

  535. Impressive,

  536. it's not logical,

  537. and it's not appealing.

  538. So why on earth

  539. would you want to be cross-centered?

  540. Well, let me show you

  541. three more things

  542. from the passage

  543. that will hopefully answer that.

  544. Being cross-centered as a church

  545. means these things as well.

  546. It means speaking the truth.

  547. Speaking the truth.

  548. Come back to verse 18.

  549. Let me point out

  550. something really important

  551. to you here.

  552. I'm going to read it again.

  553. For the message of the cross

  554. is foolishness

  555. to those who are perishing,

  556. but to us who are being saved

  557. it is the power of God.

  558. Now, the word in our Bibles

  559. that translated message here

  560. is the Greek word logos,

  561. which more literally

  562. is the word word.

  563. This is the word of the cross.

  564. Which contrasts

  565. with verse 17

  566. where you have

  567. the word of wisdom,

  568. the logos of wisdom.

  569. So here, if you like,

  570. are the comparison

  571. of two stories.

  572. It's the word of the world,

  573. the word of wisdom

  574. and eloquence,

  575. or it's the word of the cross,

  576. which is the power

  577. of God to save.

  578. And here is the point.

  579. The message of the cross

  580. is important

  581. because it's the word of God.

  582. It's truth.

  583. It's the logos.

  584. Now, I think that's interesting

  585. because I think

  586. if you or I were writing

  587. verse 18,

  588. we would say

  589. it's the cross of Christ

  590. which is the power of God.

  591. But it doesn't say that,

  592. does it?

  593. What does it say

  594. is the power of God?

  595. Not the cross of Christ.

  596. It's the message

  597. of the cross of Christ

  598. which is the power of God.

  599. It's the word of the cross

  600. which is the power of God.

  601. Paul is not contrasting

  602. the world's wisdom

  603. with sort of

  604. a silent belief in Jesus.

  605. He is contrasting

  606. the word that the world says

  607. against the word

  608. that God says.

  609. He's not contrasting

  610. just a kind of

  611. religious experience

  612. with the word of the world.

  613. Instead,

  614. he's comparing

  615. the message of the cross,

  616. the spoken message

  617. about Jesus Christ.

  618. Telling,

  619. declaring,

  620. saying

  621. what his death

  622. on the cross has done.

  623. That's the power of God,

  624. he says.

  625. Now,

  626. I hope you're thinking

  627. in your mind.

  628. There are loads

  629. of implications

  630. of that,

  631. aren't there?

  632. But one really important one

  633. is that there is no distinction

  634. for us as a church

  635. between being cross-centered

  636. and being Bible preaching.

  637. I think I've got that

  638. on a slide,

  639. Niva,

  640. that says

  641. cross-centered

  642. equals Bible preaching.

  643. There you go.

  644. You cannot be

  645. cross-centered

  646. without the message

  647. of what the cross means

  648. which is the message

  649. of the whole Bible.

  650. And you can't be faithful

  651. to the Bible

  652. without being cross-centered

  653. because on every page

  654. the achievements

  655. of Christ's cross

  656. are articulated for us.

  657. or to put the same thing

  658. in a slightly different way,

  659. you can't be cross-centered

  660. without preaching the Bible

  661. because it's the declaration

  662. of the message

  663. that's so important.

  664. It's about listening

  665. to the word of God

  666. instead of the word

  667. of wisdom and eloquence.

  668. It means,

  669. doesn't it,

  670. in youth work,

  671. in Sunday school,

  672. in small group discussions,

  673. two things are really important,

  674. aren't they?

  675. Two things are really important.

  676. One is to have an open Bible

  677. and the second is

  678. to show how that particular

  679. part of the Bible

  680. points you

  681. to human inability to save

  682. and God alone can save.

  683. Let me say,

  684. in my experience,

  685. it might be different here,

  686. but in my experience

  687. as evangelicals,

  688. we are better at the first one

  689. than we are at the second one.

  690. Right?

  691. We understand

  692. we have to open the Bible.

  693. We know that.

  694. But we are really good

  695. at opening the Bible

  696. and telling people

  697. to be better.

  698. Or opening the Bible

  699. and using it

  700. to give people information.

  701. What you really need

  702. to understand

  703. are these stories.

  704. Now,

  705. being a better person

  706. and understanding

  707. the stories of the Bible,

  708. both those things

  709. are good,

  710. aren't they?

  711. But that's not why

  712. God's word was given to you.

  713. God's word is given

  714. because it teaches you

  715. the message of the cross,

  716. which is what Christ has done

  717. and not what I have done.

  718. Open Bibles

  719. but not seeing the cross

  720. is not seeing

  721. God's sovereign power

  722. to save.

  723. We've not really understood

  724. our Bibles

  725. unless we've seen the cross.

  726. I could go on,

  727. but I've got years to go on,

  728. so I'm not going to do that

  729. just this morning.

  730. Let me show you

  731. a second thing

  732. that being cross-centered

  733. means as a church.

  734. It means we have access

  735. to God's power.

  736. Access to God's power.

  737. We've touched on this already,

  738. but notice verse 18,

  739. the message of the cross,

  740. the declaration of what

  741. Christ has achieved

  742. in his death and resurrection.

  743. The message of the Bible

  744. is to those who are being saved

  745. the power of God.

  746. In other words,

  747. this message,

  748. which is foolishness,

  749. illogical,

  750. unimpressiveness to the world

  751. is to God's people

  752. power.

  753. Now, what is it

  754. God's power to do?

  755. Is it God's power

  756. to give me all I want,

  757. power to have a good week at work,

  758. power to heal me

  759. from every disease,

  760. power to put money

  761. in my pockets maybe?

  762. Well, no, it's not, is it?

  763. Follow the logic

  764. of the passage.

  765. You'll see verse 21.

  766. Notice the same contrast.

  767. The wisdom of the world

  768. versus the foolishness

  769. of preaching.

  770. You see that?

  771. What is it that

  772. the foolishness of preaching

  773. can do

  774. that the wisdom

  775. of the world cannot?

  776. Well, it's enable people

  777. to know God,

  778. isn't it?

  779. By being saved by God.

  780. Here then,

  781. the message of the cross,

  782. being cross-centered

  783. as a church,

  784. means we have,

  785. listen, this is it,

  786. God's power

  787. to know him.

  788. God's power

  789. to know him

  790. and be saved by him.

  791. It doesn't mean

  792. that we will always know

  793. why God is doing

  794. what he's doing

  795. in my life

  796. at any particular

  797. given moment,

  798. but it will mean

  799. that even in the midst

  800. of pain and suffering,

  801. even with the tears

  802. strolling down our face,

  803. we will be able to say,

  804. even now I know God

  805. and I know he's with me.

  806. I can experience God,

  807. I can relate to God,

  808. I can delight in God,

  809. I can enjoy him

  810. through the message

  811. of the cross,

  812. which is the message

  813. of the Bible.

  814. Think about it like this.

  815. I think I've got

  816. a picture for this.

  817. Imagine that a friend

  818. invites you out

  819. to go and eat burgers,

  820. okay?

  821. I didn't put a particularly

  822. good picture of a burger up

  823. because I didn't want you

  824. to salivate too much,

  825. but imagine, right,

  826. a friend invites you out

  827. and says,

  828. listen,

  829. I found somewhere new

  830. on the Kilburn High Road

  831. to eat burgers.

  832. Let's go and eat burgers.

  833. It's going to be great.

  834. We're going to have

  835. an awesome time.

  836. Come with me.

  837. I'll show you where it is.

  838. So you go,

  839. you follow them,

  840. and you sit in the shop

  841. and you take a seat,

  842. and all over the wall

  843. of the shop

  844. are pictures of burgers.

  845. They look great.

  846. And you're sitting there

  847. and your friends sit in there

  848. and you're looking

  849. at each other

  850. and you're looking

  851. at the menu of burgers

  852. in front of you,

  853. and then your friend says

  854. to you,

  855. should we leave now?

  856. And you get up

  857. and walk out

  858. a bit confused

  859. and they say,

  860. wasn't that great?

  861. Wasn't that a brilliant place?

  862. Didn't you really enjoy that?

  863. What are you going to say?

  864. You're going to,

  865. well,

  866. that was rubbish.

  867. I didn't even get

  868. to eat a burger.

  869. I went to eat a burger.

  870. I didn't even get one.

  871. What a terrible,

  872. terrible time.

  873. Now, listen,

  874. it's a silly story,

  875. isn't it?

  876. But that is like church

  877. without the message

  878. of the cross.

  879. Hearing the message

  880. of the cross

  881. is how the church

  882. gets to eat,

  883. and I hope this isn't

  884. irreverent,

  885. how we get to eat

  886. the burger of the delights

  887. of God's goodness.

  888. This is the feast

  889. for us this morning

  890. as we gather around

  891. the cross of the Lord

  892. Jesus Christ,

  893. hearing his message,

  894. feasting on him.

  895. And it doesn't work

  896. if you don't preach Christ.

  897. If you come to church

  898. and someone says

  899. something other

  900. than the message

  901. of the cross of Christ,

  902. it's like going

  903. to a burger restaurant

  904. and not getting

  905. to eat one.

  906. Or if you don't come,

  907. well, it's like not even

  908. turning up anyway,

  909. isn't it?

  910. Actually, gathering

  911. as a church

  912. around the message

  913. of the cross

  914. is how we delight

  915. in God,

  916. how we get to feast

  917. on him.

  918. It's the power

  919. of God to save,

  920. the power of God

  921. for us to know him

  922. and delight in him.

  923. Finally,

  924. a cross-centered church

  925. means a divided church,

  926. a divided church.

  927. Now, I put it like that,

  928. which I think should be

  929. on the next screen,

  930. being divided.

  931. I've put it like that

  932. to make you sit up

  933. and listen,

  934. because I knew

  935. this was the end.

  936. Surely you think,

  937. wow, division in the church,

  938. dude, that's a terrible thing.

  939. This is your first Sunday.

  940. Don't stand up there

  941. and preach division.

  942. That would be

  943. a terrible thing to do.

  944. We don't want that.

  945. And of course,

  946. division in the church

  947. is a bad thing,

  948. but there are,

  949. or there is a certain

  950. kind of division

  951. that the cross brings,

  952. which is really,

  953. really important.

  954. Because a cross-centered church

  955. will expose

  956. a division in the church

  957. between those

  958. who trust in Christ

  959. and those who do not.

  960. Between those relying

  961. on human wisdom

  962. and those relying on God.

  963. As we preach Christ

  964. at the center,

  965. it will make this division

  966. increasingly clear

  967. that there are those

  968. who believe

  969. and those who do not.

  970. And the temptation is then

  971. to change the message,

  972. isn't it?

  973. Or to water it down

  974. just a little bit,

  975. a little bit,

  976. or be a little bit

  977. less focused on it

  978. just to mask that division.

  979. Because it means

  980. hard things, doesn't it?

  981. It means that

  982. some young people

  983. will stop coming

  984. because they don't

  985. believe the message.

  986. They want the word

  987. of the world,

  988. not the word of the cross.

  989. It means some friends

  990. we invite

  991. don't want to come back

  992. because they're offended

  993. by the idea

  994. that God alone

  995. can save them

  996. and they can't do

  997. anything themselves.

  998. Now, don't get me wrong.

  999. We don't want to be

  1000. deliberately offensive.

  1001. Christians can be

  1002. deliberately offensive,

  1003. can't they?

  1004. I'm sure we've all

  1005. got a bad experience

  1006. of that.

  1007. It's as if

  1008. it takes some weird

  1009. spiritual delight

  1010. in being obnoxious.

  1011. I'm not talking

  1012. about that at all.

1013. If people leave the church

  1014. because we are rude

  1015. and unkind,

  1016. then that's our fault

  1017. and we should repent

  1018. and find them

  1019. and say sorry.

  1020. Well, the point is

1021. that even if we are

  1022. really friendly

  1023. and really warm

  1024. and really welcoming,

  1025. even if the welcome

  1026. at church is amazing,

  1027. the fellowship is warm

  1028. and sweet

1029. and the food is delicious

  1030. over lunch,

1031. if we preach the cross,

  1032. this division will become

  1033. clear in the life

  1034. of the church.

  1035. In 1 Corinthians chapter 11,

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  1036. Paul says the division

  1037. becomes really clear

  1038. as you gather around

  1039. the Lord's table

  1040. because some people

1041. are allowed to eat it

  1042. and others are not.

  1043. Literally,

1044. as we eat the visible

  1045. words of the cross,

  1046. which means that you

  1047. really belong to church

1048. by believing in the message

  1049. of Jesus Christ

  1050. and his cross,

  1051. not just by coming.

  1052. Don't say West Kilburn

  1053. Baptist Church

  1054. is my church

  1055. because I come.

  1056. You say West Kilburn

  1057. Baptist Church

  1058. is my church

  1059. because I believe

  1060. in Jesus Christ alone.

  1061. That's why I'm here.

  1062. And that means,

  1063. doesn't it,

1064. as we finish this morning,

1065. I need to ask you

1066. and I need to ask myself

  1067. this really important question,

  1068. which is this,

  1069. do I believe

  1070. in Jesus Christ

  1071. and him crucified?

  1072. Do I believe?

  1073. Do I believe

  1074. that my sin

  1075. is so bad

  1076. that I cannot

  1077. save myself,

  1078. but my Savior

  1079. is so lovely

  1080. that he's done

  1081. all that needed

  1082. to be done

  1083. to save me?

  1084. Do I believe that?

  1085. This morning,

  1086. have I abandoned

  1087. all hope in myself,

  1088. every last little bit

  1089. of self-reliance

  1090. and thrown myself

  1091. on Jesus?

  1092. Do I see myself,

  1093. before I see myself

  1094. as anything else,

  1095. I'm a person

  1096. defined by the story

  1097. of what Jesus

  1098. has done for me?

  1099. I'm a child

  1100. of the cross.

  1101. That the most

  1102. foundational thing

  1103. is that I belong

  1104. to Jesus.

  1105. He loves me.

  1106. He died for me

1107. that I might be forgiven.

  1108. Do you believe that?

  1109. Because if you do,

  1110. then welcome.

  1111. Welcome to a company

  1112. of unimpressive,

  1113. illogical,

  1114. unappealing people

  1115. who have access

1116. to the truth of God,

  1117. experience the power

  1118. of God

  1119. and know God

  1120. through the thick

  1121. and thin of life

  1122. and stretching

  1123. into eternity.

  1124. There's no better

  1125. place to be.

  1126. Let me pray

  1127. as I close.

  1128. heavenly Father,

  1129. thank you so much

1130. for all that you've done

1131. for us in the Lord Jesus.

  1132. Thank you for this

  1133. indescribable love

  1134. that you have

  1135. for sinful people

  1136. even like us.

  1137. and we thank you

  1138. that you've saved us

1139. not by what we have done

  1140. but by what Christ

  1141. has done for us.

1142. So we delight in that

1143. and we feast on that

  1144. this morning.

  1145. In Jesus' name.

  1146. Amen.
