  1. 1 Corinthians chapter 2 verse 6 to 16.

    1 Corinthians 2:6–16

  2. We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature,

  3. but not the wisdom of this age or the rulers of this age who are coming to nothing.

  4. No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden

  5. and that God destined for our glory before time began.

  6. None of the rulers of this age understood, for if they had,

  7. they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

  8. However, as it is written, no one has seen, no ear has heard,

  9. no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him.

  10. But God has revealed to us by his spirit.

  11. The spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

  12. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him?

  13. In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the spirit of God.

  14. We have not received the spirit of the world, but the spirit who is from God,

  15. that we may understand what God has freely given us.

  16. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom,

  17. but in words taught by the spirit, expressing spiritual truth in spiritual words.

  18. The man without the spirit does not accept the things that come from the spirit of God,

  19. for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them,

  20. because they are spiritually discerned.

  21. The spiritual man makes judgment about the things,

  22. but he himself is not subject to anyone's judgment.

  23. For who has known the mind of the Lord,

  24. that he may instruct him,

  25. but we have the mind of Christ.

  26. Amen.

  27. Thanks, Lucia. That's great. Thank you.

  28. Well, keep that passage open.

  29. We're going to work our way through it together this morning.

  30. And I wonder, as we do that,

  31. if I can ask you to think about what is a successful church?

  32. Have you ever thought about that?

  33. What is a successful church?

  34. We know, don't we, what a successful business is.

  35. So a successful business is one that earns lots of money for its owners.

  36. We know what a successful athlete is, don't we?

  37. Someone who wins lots of games, lots of tournaments.

  38. They get all the cool Nike gear because they get given it as sponsorship.

  39. Maybe you even know what a successful parent looks like.

  40. You know, they have their kids in bed asleep by 7pm

  41. and are sitting in a tidy flat drinking a cup of tea in front of the television.

  42. I wonder whether you've thought about what a successful church looks like.

  43. I guess if we use those same measures that we were talking about for a church,

  44. we might say that a successful church is one that maybe has a lot of people coming along to it.

  45. Maybe they've got a lot of money.

  46. Maybe the church meets in a fancy building.

  47. They have some funky music or a celebrity pastor that everybody knows.

  48. But even when you express it like that, you sort of know, don't you,

  49. that doesn't really kind of sound right for a church, does it?

  50. I mean, there are lots of churches like that, especially in London,

  51. and you wouldn't want to go to any of them, really.

  52. It would be safer not going.

  53. So what then is success for a church?

  54. What is it that we are aiming for?

  55. You know, we're at the start of a journey of church revitalization.

  56. What is it that we're hoping the destination will be?

  57. Well, I want to suggest to you this morning from the passage that we've just read together

  58. that a successful church is not necessarily rich.

  59. It's not necessarily meeting in a fancy building.

  60. It doesn't even have to have funky music.

  61. Instead, what I want us to see together is that successful church is a church that is relying on

  62. and experiencing the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit.

  63. In other words, the church, a successful church, is a place where God is obviously at work,

  64. opening people's eyes and hearts to see the wonder of who he is and what he's done,

  65. and empowering church members to live that life together.

  66. Now, just think about that with me.

  67. If that's right, if that's what a successful church is,

  68. if a successful church is relying on and experiencing the regenerating work of the Spirit,

  69. then here's the central thing about a successful church.

  70. You and I can't make one, can we?

  71. There's nothing that we can do to make church successful,

  72. because the success of a church relies not on us,

  73. but on God, on a movement of the Spirit.

  74. And I want to suggest this morning that that has a profound impact on what church should look like

  75. and what church should feel like for all of us this morning.

  76. Now, if you'll wind back with me a moment and come back to 1 Corinthians chapter 2,

    1 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  77. which we read together, I want us to see that there,

  78. but we're going to walk through the passage first,

  79. and then I'm going to pull out what I think are three implications for us as a church.

  80. So let's just walk through these verses first.

  81. Let's walk through them.

  82. In verse 6, Paul tells them that although his preaching isn't with conventional wisdom,

  83. that's what we were thinking about last week,

  84. still it is a message of wisdom among the mature, as he calls them.

  85. It's important that we get what the word mature is there.

  86. It doesn't mean people of a mature age.

  87. I'm sorry if you're of a mature age this morning,

  88. but what he's not saying this morning is that once you arrive at a certain age,

  89. you will then understand what he's saying.

  90. So this is for older folks and not for younger folks.

  91. That's not what he's saying this morning.

  92. Really, literally the word there is perfect.

  93. And this is Paul's description of the church.

  94. These are the saints or the sanctified or the holy people,

  95. as he calls them in chapter 1 verse 2,

  96. the saints in Corinth, the mature in Corinth.

  97. Again, that's not because every single church member or any church member is absolutely perfect.

  98. Rather, it's to contrast them with the world.

  99. The world are the perishing, chapter 1 verse 18.

  100. So the mature are really just Christians,

  101. those who more often than not were weak and nothing in the eyes of the world,

  102. but who have now been saved by God and brought into his kingdom,

  103. made holy, mature and perfect.

  104. But really the question is then, where is this wisdom from?

  105. If this wisdom isn't worldly wisdom,

  106. it's not the wisdom of this age from the rulers of this age,

  107. a wisdom that's coming to nothing, as he puts it in verse 6,

  108. then what kind of wisdom is it?

  109. Well, look down at verse 7.

  110. You're told this is God's wisdom.

  111. We declare God's wisdom, he says.

  112. Wisdom that he tells us has been hidden, but has now been revealed.

  113. It's a bit of an aside, but I think it's worth noticing that the wisdom of God has not been hidden

  114. because God was making his mind up about it.

  115. You and I can be like that, can't we?

  116. You know, we wait until the very last minute to make a decision

  117. because we don't want to get a wrong decision.

  118. So someone asks you to do something and you wait for ages and ages and ages

  119. before you decide whether you're going to say yes or no to doing it.

  120. Someone's not very happy with me so far this morning.

  121. Please don't worry about it, it's absolutely fine.

  122. I don't mind a bit of crying.

  123. It's not that here though, is it?

  124. It's not that God can't make up his mind why the wisdom's hidden.

  125. The wisdom has been hidden, but it has been decided.

  126. Look at the end of verse 7.

  127. You notice there that it has been planned for the glory of God's people before time began.

  128. In other words, this message of wisdom for the mature,

  129. although it's been hidden and now revealed, is about the eternal plans of God.

  130. Plans which he established in eternity past and is now working out in history.

  131. But despite the fact that these plans are ancient and have been working out in history,

  132. still, verse 8, none of the rulers of this age understood them.

  133. Why?

  134. Well, because they crucified the Lord of glory,

  135. which had they known and understood and believed the plans of God,

  136. had they been mature, to use Paul's phrase in verse 6,

  137. they would not have wickedly killed God's Son in human flesh.

  138. Again, it's worth seeing the implication of Paul's point here.

  139. The message of wisdom for the mature, founded on the ancient plans of God from before time begun,

  140. focuses where?

  141. This hidden mystery from eternity past has its focus where?

  142. There, on the cross of Jesus Christ,

  143. where the eternal Son in human flesh handed himself over to the wicked intention of his enemies,

  144. who unbeknown to them, while going through with their wicked intentions,

  145. actually accomplish the eternal plan of God to provide a sacrifice of sin so that he might forgive and save.

  146. Now, that plan, we're told, is so glorious we could never have conceived it, verse 9.

  147. He says what?

  148. No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for his people.

  149. But verse 10, that's the message that's now being revealed to Paul by the Spirit,

  150. and it's the message he's now preaching.

  151. Now, we're going to move on just to look at some of the other bits in a moment,

  152. but just think about what this means.

  153. Notice here that God is not frantic.

  154. God is not stressed, is he?

  155. He's not running around trying to accomplish his purposes in the least amount of time possible.

  156. Instead, he's patient.

  157. He is mysteriously patient, isn't he?

  158. He's had a message of salvation decided before time began

  159. and worked it out in thousands of years of history, building up to the cross of Jesus Christ.

  160. A message that was foreshadowed and role-played out in the temple for thousands of years

  161. before God the Son arrives in human flesh.

  162. A plan that was achieved not only despite, but because of the ignorance of those who achieved it

  163. as they drove the nails into Jesus' hands.

  164. And now for thousands of years, he's patiently working out Christ's victory

  165. and giving his spirit to whoever he wills.

  166. God is patient.

  167. I wonder if you notice that's how God works in your life too.

  168. He's not in a rush.

  169. Instead of giving quick answers and fast fixes, he is content, isn't he,

  170. for you just to keep coming to the Lord Jesus in the midst of unanswered prayers and confusion.

  171. But not because he's forgotten you or because he doesn't love you,

  172. but because he's patiently doing by the Spirit through the cross something so wonderful

  173. you wouldn't even understand it if he explained it.

  174. Now, back in 1 Corinthians 2, Paul goes on in verses 11 to 16

  175. to explain how God's Spirit has revealed this message,

  176. how the message of wisdom centered on the cross has come to the church by Paul.

  177. And there are two parts to it, which we saw, didn't we, with Lashire in the family Bible slot.

  178. The first part is about who the Spirit is,

  179. and the second part is about what the Spirit does.

  180. So firstly, verse 11, the Spirit knows the message of wisdom because he is God the Spirit.

  181. Who he is, he is God the Spirit.

  182. This is the doctrine of the Trinity, right?

  183. So although Paul can talk about the Holy Spirit as a separate person from the Father and the Son,

  184. he is distinct from the Father and the Son, yet still he's fully divine.

  185. He's a partaker in the divine essence of God.

  186. So that the Father can't plan anything that the Spirit doesn't know.

  187. The Son can't do anything that the Spirit doesn't empower.

  188. So the Spirit knows what the Father has planned from eternity past,

  189. because he's divine.

  190. And what the Son does, the Spirit then enables,

  191. so that Paul knows, verse 12, the message of wisdom from God,

  192. because the Spirit who is at work in him is not the Spirit of the world,

  193. who knows only things about the world,

  194. but the divine Spirit from God who knows the things of God.

  195. So look down at verse 13.

  196. What does he say?

  197. He says, this is what we speak,

  198. not in words taught by human wisdom,

  199. but in words taught by the Spirit,

  200. explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.

  201. In other words, the first thing to know, says Paul,

  202. when it comes to this revelation of the message,

  203. is that the message comes from a reliable source.

  204. It comes right from the top.

  205. This is right from God himself.

  206. The Spirit is divine.

  207. The second then is what the Spirit does.

  208. So look down at verse 14.

  209. Here you'll see that not only the Spirit has access to the mind of God,

  210. but also the Spirit has been at work in Paul.

  211. So Paul is with the Spirit,

  212. or the Spirit is with Paul.

  213. So he doesn't consider the things to come from God as foolish,

  214. but now as wisdom.

  215. Look down, these I think are important verses.

  216. Look down at verse 15.

  217. The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things,

  218. but such a person is not subject merely to human judgments.

  219. Literally, he doesn't make worldly judgments,

  220. nor can he be judged by human judgments.

  221. He's not here saying,

  222. listen, I'm no longer accountable to the law or to anybody.

  223. He's not saying that.

  224. He's not saying, listen, if I get caught speeding on my camel,

  225. it comes to nothing because I'm above all of that.

  226. That's not what he's saying.

  227. Rather, this is about how Paul now thinks

  228. and how he should be thought about by others.

  229. With the Spirit in his mind,

  230. with the Spirit of God at work in him,

  231. he now thinks God's thoughts

  232. with the mind of Christ, verse 16,

  233. which he couldn't do before.

  234. In other words, human judgments can't explain Paul anymore.

  235. You can't explain who Paul is and what Paul does

  236. simply at a human level

  237. because he has the Spirit

  238. and knows the mind of Christ.

  239. This, I think, is really, really helpful.

  240. You've got to make sure that we get this straight in our minds.

  241. Paul is saying that

  242. understanding the message of the cross

  243. by the Spirit of God dwelling in our hearts

  244. changes everything about how we think and view the world.

  245. It literally becomes the lenses

  246. through which you see everything.

  247. So much so that decisions

  248. that would have made no sense before

  249. now make perfect sense

  250. because you see and understand

  251. what God is doing through the cross of Christ.

  252. There's a famous verse in 1 Corinthians 15,

  253. just a bit later on in the letter,

  254. and Paul talks about

  255. if the resurrection hadn't happened,

  256. he would be to be pitied above all men.

  257. Do you remember that?

  258. If the resurrection is not true,

  259. then Paul's life makes no sense at all.

  260. It's to be pitied.

  261. But of course, the resurrection has happened,

  262. so his life makes perfect sense.

  263. And so it should be for us.

  264. You know, the question for us

  265. if we're a Christian this morning

  266. is if our lives and decisions

  267. make perfect sense

  268. without the gospel being true,

  269. then we're not really living the Christian life

  270. because the message of the cross

  271. is the big truth

  272. through which everything is filtered.

  273. There's another important aside here as well,

  274. which I think I want us to get

  275. before we come on to the implications.

  276. Look again at verse 14.

  277. Let me read the first part of verse 14 to you again.

  278. The person without the Spirit

  279. does not accept the things

  280. that come from the Spirit of God,

  281. but considers them foolishness.

  282. Notice that Paul assumes here

  283. there are two types of people in the world.

  284. There are people without the Spirit

  285. and there are people with the Spirit.

  286. And those without the Spirit

  287. cannot accept the gospel,

  288. but consider it what?

  289. Foolishness.

  290. And by implication,

  291. those with the Spirit

  292. do accept the gospel.

  293. In other words,

  294. and this is important,

  295. Paul doesn't say there are two types

  296. of Christian in the world,

  297. those with the Spirit

  298. and those without the Spirit.

  299. He's saying there are two kinds

  300. of people in the world,

  301. those without the Spirit

  302. who therefore don't trust Christ

  303. and those with the Spirit

  304. are those who do trust Christ.

  305. In other words,

  306. if you love the Lord

  307. and you think the gospel

  308. of Jesus Christ crucified

  309. is the best news ever,

  310. that's because the Spirit

  311. has made you alive,

  312. not because you've worked it out.

  313. No Spirit,

  314. no life.

  315. So let me ask you this morning,

  316. have you experienced that?

  317. I'm not asking if you've had

  318. some kind of weird,

  319. unexplainable experience

  320. of what you think

  321. might be the Holy Spirit.

  322. No, I'm not asking that.

  323. What I'm asking you is,

  324. have you had your eyes open

  325. to the beauty and wonder

  326. of the plan of God?

  327. You and I live in a world

  328. where from eternity past,

  329. God has a plan of salvation

  330. for people like you and me.

  331. Have you seen that your happiness,

  332. your eternal life,

  333. lie not in the fulfillment

  334. of your own dreams and aspiration,

  335. but in the accomplishment

  336. of God's plans?

  337. Have you experienced new life

  338. by the Spirit

  339. so that your eyes and your heart

  340. are open to that,

  341. to love that and trust that?

  342. Because if you haven't,

  343. you need to understand

  344. there's nothing you can do

  345. to kind of generate that

  346. from inside of yourself.

  347. Instead, you need to turn

  348. to the Lord and say,

  349. please God in heaven above,

  350. give me eyes to see

  351. and a heart to trust

  352. the wonder of Christ,

  353. to turn from the horror

  354. of my selfishness

  355. to love and trust you instead.

  356. That's a really quick run through,

  357. 1 Corinthians 2.

  358. Let me try and draw out

  359. three implications

  360. for us as a church.

  361. What does it mean

  362. for us as a church

  363. to be relying on the Spirit

  364. and living out these realities?

  365. Let me suggest three things.

  366. The first one is this.

  367. Spirit-powered faith

  368. will trump intelligence.

  369. Spirit-powered faith

  370. will trump intelligence.

  371. I was a student

  372. at Sheffield University

  373. quite a long time ago now,

  374. and I studied geography,

  375. which has turned out

  376. not to be incredibly useful,

  377. but anyway,

  378. I studied geography at university,

  379. and one of the things

  380. that they enabled you to do

  381. was you could pick

  382. a certain number of modules

  383. from any other department

  384. in the university.

  385. So at the beginning of the year,

  386. you go and queue up

  387. to register for your optional modules.

  388. One of my friends decided

  389. to just join the shortest queue

  390. and ended up doing

  391. some weird course

  392. in ancient history.

  393. Most people did

  394. a computer science module

  395. because everybody knows

  396. computer science is easy,

  397. and if you get a good mark,

  398. it boosts your mark

  399. in the degree you're actually doing.

  400. Anyway,

  401. I decided there was

  402. a biblical studies department

  403. at Sheffield University

  404. at the time,

  405. and so I took a module

  406. in New Testament Greek,

  407. so I thought that would be

  408. interesting and helpful.

  409. I hasten to add

  410. I wasn't actually very good at it,

  411. but the striking thing was

  412. in the biblical studies department

  413. at Sheffield University

  414. was some of the brightest people

  415. in the university were there.

  416. They spent their lives

  417. studying the scriptures,

  418. but they hadn't got a clue

  419. what the Bible

  420. or the gospel was about.

  421. It was incredible to me.

  422. Here were men and women

  423. who were spending their lives

  424. reading everything

  425. that was written

  426. about the Bible

  427. and the Bible itself,

  428. but still they didn't

  429. trust Christ

  430. and the whole thing

  431. was foolishness to them.

  432. That's 1 Corinthians 2

  433. in action, isn't it?

  434. Because it's not intelligence,

  435. but it is spirit-powered faith

  436. that counts,

  437. and so it must be

  438. for us as a church.

  439. We must learn

  440. to treasure

  441. not so much

  442. great thoughts about God,

  443. but great faith in Him.

  444. Not because academic learning

  445. isn't important

  446. or because Christians

  447. shouldn't use their brains

  448. when it comes to

  449. understanding the Bible.

  450. No, we must,

  451. and we must train people

  452. to do that.

  453. While the point is

  454. that as a church,

  455. we should be quicker

  456. to listen to a brother

  457. or a sister in Christ

  458. who turns us to God

  459. in the Scriptures,

  460. then we are listening

  461. to the latest expert

  462. on the God channel

  463. who's full of their own

  464. self-importance.

  465. This idea gets expressed

  466. in our church covenant

  467. or constitution

  468. that states we're a church

  469. that's led by elders,

  470. supported by deacons,

  471. but owned collectively

  472. by the church membership.

  473. And the church membership

  474. are all those

  475. who having shown evidence

  476. of new life in Christ

  477. and being baptized,

  478. covenant together

  479. to be a church family,

  480. to look out for one another,

  481. to care for one another,

  482. to take responsibility,

  483. to meet together regularly,

  484. to appoint leaders

  485. who will teach the Scriptures,

  486. celebrate the Lord's Supper

  487. and baptism.

  488. And it doesn't matter

  489. whether you've been

  490. a Christian for a week

  491. or whether you're

  492. a professor of theology

  493. and you've been a Christian

  494. for 40 years.

  495. Membership in the local church

  496. treats you exactly the same

  497. because church is about

  498. spirit-empowered faith,

  499. not human intelligence.

  500. You might have heard

  501. that phrase,

  502. all-member ministry.

  503. We're going to think

  504. about that some more

  505. in a few weeks' time,

  506. but really it's built

  507. on this doctrine.

  508. Every member of the church

  509. is a minister of the gospel

  510. because every member,

  511. by means of their conversion,

  512. has the Spirit of God

  513. at work in them,

  514. enabling them to understand

  515. the things of God

  516. and apply them to others.

  517. Let me try and put it

  518. as provocatively as I can, okay?

  519. If the only person

  520. you ever see up the front

  521. in church is me,

  522. or if I'm the only person

  523. doing ministry

  524. in the life of the church,

  525. we haven't made a kind

  526. of organizational error.

  527. We've made a theological error

  528. because all the members

  529. of the church

  530. are ministers of the church,

  531. not just me.

  532. Likewise,

  533. if you come to church

  534. expecting that there's

  535. no contribution

  536. for you to make,

  537. it's not a laziness problem.

  538. It's a theological problem

  539. because all of God's people

  540. are Spirit-empowered

  541. ministers of the gospel.

  542. Not because we all

  543. have the same gifts

  544. or have the exact

  545. same responsibilities,

  546. but because we all

  547. have the same Spirit.

  548. That's the first implication.

  549. Second one,

  550. praying to God

  551. will trump nagging people.

  552. If what Paul is saying

  553. here is right,

  554. that we can only understand

  555. the wisdom and glory

  556. of the gospel

  557. by a work of the Spirit

  558. in our hearts,

  559. then what we need

  560. to accept is that

  561. you and I

  562. cannot make anybody

  563. a Christian,

  564. can we?

  565. How so?

  566. Well, because you and I

  567. cannot give anybody

  568. the Spirit.

  569. It's not in our gift.

  570. You know,

  571. even with the best explanation

  572. of the gospel

  573. that we can bring,

  574. even with the clearest answers

  575. to the questions,

  576. even with the best literature

  577. and leaflets,

  578. none of us can make a Christian.

  579. Only God can.

  580. Now, of course,

  581. we all know that,

  582. don't we?

  583. I don't think I've told anyone

  584. anything they don't know,

  585. but we do sometimes act

  586. like we can make people Christian.

  587. If you look at your

  588. praying to nagging ratio

  589. with your non-Christian

  590. friends and family,

  591. how does that balance out?

  592. I think especially

  593. with close family,

  594. we find ourselves

  595. nagging with them

  596. to come to church

  597. or to listen to the gospel

  598. more than we find ourselves

  599. pleading with the Lord

  600. that they might turn to Christ.

  601. I think the same applies

  602. to holiness or weakness.

  603. The gift of the Spirit

  604. here in 1 Corinthians 2

  605. doesn't mean that we all

  606. instantly know everything

  607. that we need to know

  608. or that we're all as godly

  609. as we need to be.

  610. We haven't been totally liberated

  611. from the battle with sin,

  612. have we?

  613. The Spirit is fully ours,

  614. but is engaged

  615. in a lifelong battle

  616. with our sinfulness.

  617. So much so that the battle

  618. that we have to be patient

  619. or to be humble

  620. or to be thoughtful

  621. to others

  622. or to be hungry

  623. for more of the Lord,

  624. that battle is won for us

  625. in prayer,

  626. not in nagging.

  627. It means that

  628. when we talk to one another

  629. about those things,

  630. we talk to one another

  631. prayerfully,

  632. knowing that actually

  633. it's the Lord by His Spirit

  634. bringing the gospel

  635. that will change

  636. and transform us,

  637. not my nagging.

  638. The book of James says,

  639. doesn't it,

  640. that your anger

  641. achieves nothing

  642. because it's God

  643. by His Spirit

  644. that achieves things

  645. in our lives.

  646. Final implication then,

  647. and this is the big one

  648. that I want us to see.

  649. God's blessing

  650. is what success looks like.

  651. God's blessing

  652. is what success looks like.

  653. This is where we started,

  654. isn't it?

  655. But hopefully you can see

  656. it a bit more clearly now.

  657. That it is possible,

  658. isn't it,

  659. for us as a church

  660. to have lots of people coming

  661. but still to be

  662. a total failure.

  663. It's possible for us

  664. as a church

  665. to have a youth work

  666. that's bursting at the seams,

  667. a toddler group

  668. that's oversubscribed

  669. and for us still

  670. to be failing as a church.

  671. Why?

  672. Well, because what we really need

  673. as a church

  674. is a work of the Spirit

  675. in the lives of people

  676. bringing them to know

  677. and love and trust Jesus

  678. and empowering them

  679. to live for Him.

  680. And without that,

  681. we can't do anything

  682. worth doing.

  683. See, here's the hard truth

  684. for all of us

  685. and I think it's hard for me

  686. but it's hard for all of us

  687. this morning.

  688. There is nothing

  689. that any of us

  690. in this room can do

  691. to revitalize

  692. the ministry of the gospel

  693. at West Kilburn Baptist Church.

  694. You know,

  695. we might be able

  696. to do a few things

  697. to see more people coming.

  698. We might even see

  699. lots more people coming

  700. and it might not be wrong

  701. to do those things.

  702. They might be good things to do.

  703. Perhaps we should do

  704. some of them

  705. but they won't on their own

  706. revitalize the ministry

  707. of the church

  708. because only a movement

  709. of the Spirit

  710. will do that.

  711. Only a movement

  712. of the Spirit

  713. in the lives of unbelievers

  714. bringing them to faith

  715. in Christ

  716. and in our lives

  717. making us conscious

  718. of our need of the Lord.

  719. Let me say

  720. just really practically

  721. how this lands.

  722. It's why really

  723. the only thing I've changed

  724. other than the big TV

  725. is the Wednesday night

  726. prayer meeting.

  727. I've split the Zoom part

  728. away from the in-person part

  729. as Ray was explaining earlier

  730. with the hope of just trying

  731. to make them both

  732. a little bit better.

  733. Why would I do that?

  734. Well, because I am

  735. absolutely convinced

  736. from 1 Corinthians 2

  737. and from the rest

  738. of the Scriptures

  739. that actually

  740. it's only God's blessing

  741. that can revitalize

  742. the ministry of the church

  743. and we need to ask him for it.

  744. We need to come

  745. and pray

  746. and ask for his blessing.

  747. So my hope is

  748. that if you can come

  749. in person

  750. on a Wednesday night

  751. please come

  752. pray with us.

  753. In-person is best

  754. for all sorts of reasons.

  755. I can explain this

  756. to you later.

  757. The incarnation

  758. happened in person, yeah?

  759. It wasn't live-streamed.

  760. Coming in person

  761. is best.

  762. But if you can't

  763. attend in person

  764. maybe there's all sorts

  765. of reasons for that.

  766. Maybe you're housebound

  767. maybe getting out

  768. in the evening

  769. is too difficult.

  770. Perhaps you're working away.

  771. Then come on Zoom

  772. and pray with us there.

  773. Because success

  774. for us as a church

  775. is this and only this.

  776. Relying on

  777. and experiencing

  778. the regenerating power

  779. of the Spirit

  780. amongst us.

  781. We can't do that

  782. for ourselves

  783. but we can ask God

  784. to do it for us.

  785. And wonderfully

  786. he delights

  787. to answer that prayer.

  788. Let me pray.

  789. Heavenly Father

  790. we come before you

  791. this morning

  792. and ask for your blessing.

  793. Knowing that there's

  794. nothing in us

  795. that deserves it

  796. but knowing that

  797. without it

  798. we can do nothing.

  799. We long Lord

  800. that you might bless us

  801. with the power

  802. of the Spirit

  803. opening eyes

  804. and hearts

  805. to trust in the Lord Jesus

  806. and moving us

  807. to apply the gospel

  808. to our lives

  809. more thoroughly

  810. even in the dark

  811. corners of our hearts

  812. that our lives

  813. would only be

  814. explained

  815. by us living

  816. for the Lord Jesus.

  817. Please do this work

  818. amongst us

  819. for your glory's sake

  820. and help us

  821. in the weeks

  822. months

  823. and years to come

  824. to be faithful

  825. in asking you

  826. for this blessing.

  827. We long

  828. to be successful

  829. as a church

  830. in the genuine

  831. sense of that

  832. to be a place

  833. where

  834. your Spirit

  835. is experienced

  836. in bringing

  837. power

  838. and transformation

  839. to our lives.

  840. And so we ask

  841. for that

  842. in Jesus' name.

  843. Amen.
