  1. Now, I want to ask you a question about diversity.

  2. Diversity.

  3. Does anyone know what diversity means?

  4. What is diversity?

  5. Difference, yes.

  6. It seems like the average age over this side is a lot lower than the average age over this side.

  7. What's the gravity of the kids over here?

  8. But anyway, yes, difference.

  9. Diversity is difference.

  10. Kids, anything to add?

  11. Diversity, what does it mean?

  12. Nobody knows.

  13. A group?

  14. It is a group.

  15. It's a dance group, isn't it?

  16. Is that right, yeah?

  17. Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking of, Jane, as well.

  18. Diversity, the idea that we're all different, yeah?

  19. We're all different.

  20. There is difference between us.

  21. Now, with the person next to you, ask this question.

  22. Who invented diversity?

  23. Cameron said it so loud that we all heard him.

  24. Who invented diversity, Cameron?

  25. God invented diversity.

  26. Okay, that was an easy question.

  27. Ask this one to the person next to you.

  28. It might make you think a bit more.

  29. God invented diversity for what reason?

  30. For what reason did God invent diversity?

  31. Talk to the person next to you about that for a second.

  32. Okay, sorry to interrupt your conversations.

  33. But turn in your Bibles to Revelation chapter 7, verses 9 and 10, and we will answer the question,

    Revelation 7:9

  34. why did God invent diversity?

  35. God invented diversity for what reason?

  36. Let's have a look.

  37. Revelation chapter 7, verses 9 and 10.

    Revelation 7:9

  38. Let me read it to you.

  39. After this...

  40. Hi, guys.

  41. Welcome.

  42. No, don't worry.

  43. It's fine.

  44. Oh, they're going to run out of chairs.

  45. You're going to have to sit on this side.

  46. There you go.

  47. Don't worry.

  48. So we've just been chatting and thinking about the answer to this question.

  49. God invented diversity for what reason?

  50. Revelation chapter 7, verses 9 and 10 says this.

    Revelation 7:9

  51. After this, I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count,

  52. from every nation, tribe, people, and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb,

  53. which is the Lord Jesus on the throne.

  54. They were wearing white robes, and they were holding palm branches in their hands,

  55. and they cried out in a loud voice,

  56. Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb.

  57. Why did God invent diversity?

  58. He invented diversity for his glory.

  59. Because God is glorified by people of all languages and nations and tribes gathering together

  60. and worshipping and praising him.

  61. If we were all the same, God would not be as glorious,

  62. because we wouldn't see the glory that God has made in the diversity of different people

  63. and different gifts and different cultures and different backgrounds.

  64. Now, one last question.

  65. I wonder this morning how many different languages there are in the room

  66. that we could say, praise the Lord, in a different language.

  67. You want to have a guess at how many languages you think you've got in the room?

  68. How many different languages?

  69. Have a guess.

  70. What do you reckon?

  71. Kerry-J, have you got a number in your head?

  72. What do you think?

  73. Alice thinks five.

  74. Okay.

  75. You think just four different languages.

  76. Okay.

  77. Well, let's start.

  78. We can say, praise the Lord in English.

  79. Yeah?

  80. Anyone?

  81. Praise the Lord.

  82. Praise the Lord.

  83. Okay.

  84. Any other languages in the room that want to say praise the Lord?

  85. Can we do it in French?

  86. Alice, can you give us praise the Lord in French?

  87. You can say it.

  88. Can you do it in two?

  89. Lordi.

  90. Lordi.

  91. Lordi.

  92. Lordi.

  93. Lordi.

  94. Dieu.

  95. My French is not very good.

  96. But thank you, Dan.

  97. That's brilliant.

  98. Alice, let's give you another.

  99. Go on, say it in your language.

  100. Soma Yorba.

  101. We're up to three now.

  102. Dan, have you got another one?

  103. Yeah.

  104. Go on.

  105. Kumisun Zambi.

  106. Kumisun Zambi.

  107. That's four.

  108. We're up to four languages.

  109. Okay.

  110. So, any other languages?

  111. Mortessa, you've got another language for us.

  112. Just wait.

  113. It's hard to say.

  114. It's hard to say, so I will not repeat it.

  115. I'm not going to say that.

  116. I'm not going to say that.

  117. Would you?

  118. Mortessa's got no confidence in me.

  119. Go on.

  120. Okay.

  121. So, we've got a fifth language.

  122. Well done, Mortessa.

  123. Just wait a second.

  124. Vicky.

  125. There we go.

  126. We're up to six now, yeah?

  127. I'm going to stop saying these because of fear of offending people with my...

  128. Yes, where were we up to?

  129. Do we have another one?

  130. Oh, yes.

  131. In Chinese.

  132. In Chinese.

  133. That's great.

  134. We're up to seven.

  135. Yeah, Google Translate doesn't count, right?

  136. Nick?

  137. Nick?

  138. Doxa?

  139. Doceo.

  140. Doceo.

  141. Doceo.

  142. Doceo.

  143. There we go.

  144. So, we're up to eight.

  145. Eight.

  146. So, curry...

  147. Is that right?

  148. Yeah.

  149. Well done.

  150. So, we're up to nine.

  151. Come on.

  152. Have you got another one?

  153. I think Nigeria is like...

  154. Okay.

  155. Okay.

  156. So, we've got some Nigerian down the front as well.

  157. So, we're up to...

  158. We're too shy to say it too loud.

  159. So, we're up to ten.

  160. We're up to ten.

  161. Get off your phone, Cameron.

  162. That's not...

  163. Mike?

  164. Okay.

  165. So, we're up to eleven.

  166. So, we're...

  167. There was a bit of Hebrew, I think, over there.

  168. Eleven languages.

  169. Isn't that amazing?

  170. That in this room...

  171. Are we...

  172. Have we got any more?

  173. That's great.

  174. That's twelve.

  175. That's twelve.

  176. That's great.

  177. Any...

  178. Any more?

  179. You must have...

  180. Yes.

  181. Yes.

  182. Great.

  183. We're up to twelve.

  184. We're up to twelve.

  185. More...

  186. Come on.

  187. You can say it in Turkish as well.

  188. So, where are we up to now?

  189. Thirteen.

  190. Thirteen.

  191. So, that's Turkish as well.

  192. Lucia?

  193. Who's...

  194. Lucia?

  195. Neva's going to say it for you.

  196. Don't worry.

  197. How do you say praise the Lord?

  198. Come on, Lucia.

  199. Don't be shy.

  200. Don't be shy.

  201. It's the same as the French.

  202. She doesn't know.

  203. Don't worry.

  204. Great.

  205. Listen.

  206. Listen.

  207. Okay.

  208. I'll try.

  209. I'll try to get it all back together.

  210. That's great, isn't it?

  211. The Lord, even in this room, has given lots of different languages so that in our difference,

  212. we can say the same thing, which is praise the Lord, because God in his greatness has made

  213. us all different.

  214. And we're going to be thinking some more about that together in our sermon.

  215. But let me pray for us.

  216. I'm going to pray for us as we read God's word and then listen to it taught.

  217. Kids, I'm going to pray for you and for your Sunday school teachers this morning as you go

  218. out to Sunday school.

  219. So, let me pray for you before you go.

  220. Let me pray.

  221. Heavenly Father, thank you that you made us all different for your glory, that you are such a

  222. great God that you couldn't just make one kind of person in one way, but you made all sorts of

  223. different people and different languages and cultures.

  224. And we thank you especially that as a church here, we get a taste of that with so many different

  225. languages in the room.

  226. And we want to say together, praise your name.

  227. Praise the Lord in Jesus' name.

  228. Amen.

  229. Kids, go out to Sunday school.

  230. Sunday school teachers, go well.

  231. Right, we're going to read God's word together.

  232. So, if you have a Bible, turn to 1 Corinthians chapter 12, 1 Corinthians chapter 12, verses

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention 1 Corinthians 12:12–31

  233. 12 to 31, and Liz is going to come and read God's word for us.

  234. Liz.

  235. The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts.

  236. And though all its parts are many, they form one body.

  237. So it is with Christ.

  238. For we are all baptized by one spirit into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free.

  239. And we were all given the one spirit to drink.

  240. Now the body is not made up of one part, but of many.

  241. If the foot should say, because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body, it would not,

  242. it would not for that reason, cease to be part of the body.

  243. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?

  244. If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be?

  245. But in fact, God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.

  246. If there were all one part, where would the body be?

  247. As it is, there are many parts, but one body.

  248. The eye cannot say to the hand, I don't need you.

  249. And the head cannot say to the feet, I don't need you.

  250. On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable.

  251. And the parts that we think are less honorable, we treat with special honor.

  252. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty.

  253. While our presentable parts need no special treatment,

  254. but God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it,

  255. so that there should be no division in the body,

  256. but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.

  257. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it.

  258. If one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.

  259. Now you are the body of Christ.

  260. And each one of you is a part of it.

  261. And in the church, God has appointed, first of all, apostles,

  262. second, prophets, third, teachers, then workers of miracles.

  263. Also those having gifts of healing, those able to help with others,

  264. those with gifts of administration,

  265. and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.

  266. Are all apostles, are all prophets, are all teachers,

  267. do all work miracles, do all have gifts of healing,

  268. do all speak in tongues, do all interpret,

  269. but eagerly desire the greater gifts.

  270. And now I will show you the most excellent way.

  271. Great, thank you, Liz, that's great.

  272. Well, keep the passage open,

  273. because we're going to be looking at it together for the next few moments.

  274. And I want to start, if I can, by telling you what my goal is for the next,

  275. I don't know, 20 minutes or so, 25 minutes maybe.

  276. Here's my goal.

  277. You can tell me then, after lunch, whether we hit the goal or not.

  278. Here it is.

  279. I want, if I can, through this passage,

  280. the word of God and by the help of the Spirit of God,

  281. I want us to be excited together as a church,

  282. that here at West Kilburn Baptist Church,

  283. we are the local expression of the body of Christ.

  284. So much so that when we gather as a church,

  285. when you walk in those doors at the back,

  286. when you come together and sit with one another,

  287. that you and I get to glimpse the Lord Jesus.

  288. Not just each other.

  289. And we get to glimpse him in a way that just wouldn't be possible

  290. if we stayed at home and didn't come.

  291. Now, I want to suggest that we see that, we see the body of Christ,

  292. not because we're all the same, but because we're all different.

  293. And as we gather together, we see, don't we,

  294. that God hasn't in church created, I don't know whether this works,

  295. but like a sausage machine,

  296. where basically he just churns out the same kind of person each time,

  297. and everyone's exactly the same.

  298. But rather the body of Christ, rather than a sausage machine,

  299. is more like a mosaic,

  300. as God knits together different people

  301. from different cultural backgrounds with different gifts,

  302. to make something in the combination of it,

  303. which is wonderful and glorious and beautiful,

  304. and so wonderful that it carries the label,

  305. the body of Christ.

  306. Now, I want to show you from 1 Corinthians 12

  307. that we see that in at least four different ways.

  308. So let's get on with it and see how we see the glory of the Lord Jesus.

  309. So here's the first one.

  310. We see Jesus in how we join the church.

  311. We see Jesus in how we join the church.

  312. Now, this is super important,

  313. and in a way it's assumed by the rest of the passage.

  314. So we need to get this clear in our minds as we start.

  315. We join the body of Christ

  316. by what Paul calls baptism by one spirit,

  317. or later on, being given the one spirit to drink.

  318. So look down at verse 13.

  319. I'll read it to you again.

  320. For we were all baptized by one spirit

  321. so as to form one body,

  322. whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free,

  323. and we were all given the one spirit to drink.

  324. Now, I grant you that Paul's language is not immediately clear here.

  325. 1 Corinthians is actually the reply to a letter

  326. that the Corinthian church wrote to Paul.

  327. So as you read 1 Corinthians,

  328. it's like you're listening to just one half of a telephone call.

  329. And so sometimes it's a little bit obscure what's going on.

  330. But actually we do know bits,

  331. and you can put it together as you read both Acts

  332. and 1 Corinthians and 2 Corinthians.

  333. And it seems as though the church have a particular problem

  334. that they are rating one another's spirituality

  335. on the basis of what people are able or not able to do.

  336. It seems that they're especially excited

  337. by people who can speak in tongues.

  338. And they assume that if you could speak in tongues,

  339. that's because you were a mega Christian.

  340. You had a mega dose of the spirit.

  341. And Paul is saying here,

  342. no, that's not right.

  343. That's not right.

  344. Why?

  345. Well, because every member of the church,

  346. every part of the body

  347. has been baptized into the spirit

  348. and has drunk of the spirit.

  349. All of us.

  350. Because here's the important thing.

  351. That's what conversion is about, says Paul.

  352. In other words, Paul's point is that

  353. regardless of who you are,

  354. we join Christ,

  355. we join the one body in the same way.

  356. It doesn't matter who you are

  357. or where you're from

  358. or what language you speak

  359. or what clothes you like

  360. or what food you eat

  361. or even how esteemed you are

  362. by others in the church.

  363. You all join church

  364. in exactly the same way.

  365. And what is that way?

  366. Well, it's by recognizing

  367. that before a holy God who made us,

  368. we need to be washed clean

  369. from the things that we've done wrong.

  370. Or to use his language here,

  371. we need to be baptized,

  372. washed, dipped, dumped in one spirit.

  373. And we need to admit, don't we,

  374. that we need his help

  375. to live for the Lord Jesus

  376. because we cannot do that

  377. in our own strength.

  378. We need to drink of one spirit.

  379. Now, stand back from this for a moment

  380. and you can see why church gives us

  381. a unique glimpse of the Lord Jesus.

  382. You are getting to see something this morning

  383. by being here with one another

  384. that you would not be able to see

  385. on your own at home

  386. because the truth is that

  387. every individual here,

  388. regardless of who they are,

  389. they're a Christian this morning,

  390. they belong to the churches

  391. because they've had the same

  392. transforming experience of the Spirit

  393. where we realize that living life for ourselves,

  394. going our own way,

  395. pursuing our own goals,

  396. is not taking us to glory

  397. but is dragging us to hell

  398. because we're not the gods we thought we were.

  399. And so instead we come to Christ,

  400. we turn from our sin,

  401. as the Bible calls it,

  402. and we turn to him.

  403. And by faith in him,

  404. we reach out and receive the forgiveness

  405. and mercy of the cross.

  406. He exchanges our sin for his rightness,

  407. doesn't he?

  408. So Paul says we've all been baptized

  409. into the one Spirit,

  410. drunk of the one Spirit.

  411. Now let me tell you,

  412. I think that has two very big practical implications

  413. for church life.

  414. If we see Jesus by all joining church the same way,

  415. it has two really big implications.

  416. The first one is this.

  417. It doesn't matter how many

  418. West Kilburn Baptist Church services

  419. that you have been to

  420. or how long your association with the church.

  421. It doesn't matter if you've been on the cleaning road

  422. to the welcome team,

  423. the Sunday school team.

  424. It doesn't matter even if you've preached here before.

  425. If you have not trusted Christ for yourself,

  426. if you have not experienced this new life

  427. by the Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ,

  428. then in a profound sense,

  429. you are not a member of the church.

  430. At least not in the way that Paul is thinking about here.

  431. You're not part of the body.

  432. Now I say that not because I'm trying to exclude you.

  433. I'm not trying to slam the door in your face.

  434. Quite the opposite.

  435. I say that because I want to invite you

  436. not only to attend here,

  437. but to belong here,

  438. to join here.

  439. Not by asking you to join a rota

  440. or give money

  441. or even let alone dressing the same

  442. as everybody else who comes through the door.

  443. I'd be like trying to join a school

  444. by starting to do the homework.

  445. You need actually to join the register,

  446. don't you, first?

  447. So perhaps you've been coming here for years,

  448. but still I want to invite you

  449. to join West Kilburn Baptist Church by what?

  450. Putting your faith in Jesus Christ

  451. and experiencing new life by the Spirit

  452. because the door is wide open

  453. and there's no other door to membership.

  454. There's no other door.

  455. The other implication,

  456. which I think is just as serious,

  457. is that you can't become a Christian

  458. without joining the body.

  459. Not because joining a local church

  460. makes you a Christian, does it?

  461. Joining a local church

  462. doesn't make you a Christian

  463. in the sense of like coming along

  464. or signing up for membership

  465. doesn't make you a Christian.

  466. Just like if you walk down the middle of the road,

  467. it wouldn't make you a car, would it?

  468. It would like to get you run over.

  469. Rather, the point is that actually

  470. as the Spirit makes us Christians,

  471. we want to join a local church.

  472. Just like a car when it has been made

  473. drives down the road.

  474. So a Christian, when they have been made,

  475. join a local church.

  476. So let me say to you this morning,

  477. if COVID or maybe historic difficulties

  478. at church or relational struggles

  479. have made you cold on attending church,

  480. made you withdraw a bit,

  481. let me say to you,

  482. I understand that,

  483. but can I encourage you to come?

  484. Not because all of those things

  485. will immediately disappear,

  486. but because if you're a Christian,

  487. you need to be in church.

  488. Cars that don't drive on the road

  489. cause a mess.

  490. So too that Christians

  491. who try to live their lives

  492. outside of any local church

  493. also end in disaster, don't they?

  494. So here's point one,

  495. you see Jesus in the body of Christ here

  496. because of the way that we get here.

  497. We all join in the same way.

  498. Secondly, you see Jesus in my difference

  499. from others.

  500. You see Jesus in my difference from others,

  501. not just me,

  502. my as in everybody's difference from others.

  503. In the context of the passage,

  504. Paul is talking about gifts.

  505. If you glance down at chapter 12,

  506. you'll notice in verses 7 to 11

  507. and again in verses 27 to 31,

  508. he is talking about gifts.

  509. So part of the differences between us

  510. in viewing the passage

  511. is this idea that we've all been given gifts

  512. by God to use for the good of one another

  513. and for the growth of his kingdom.

  514. We are all good at different things.

  515. God has made us and gifted us that way

  516. for the good of others.

  517. One body, many parts, as he puts it.

  518. Now that's certainly what's going on here,

  519. but I want to start somewhere else

  520. because I think Paul has something else in view

  521. as well as our gifts.

  522. Look at verse 13 and notice the differences there.

  523. Notice in verse 13, he says,

  524. Jews and Gentiles,

  525. or Jews and Greeks,

  526. slaves and free.

  527. Here they are made into one body

  528. through the work of the Spirit in conversion.

  529. And the differences here

  530. are not to do with what we are good at,

  531. but rather to do with where I'm from,

  532. my cultural background.

  533. Now some of the church are Jews by birth,

  534. says Paul.

  535. They've been raised in the synagogue.

  536. They've been taught the law of God,

  537. but probably not taught the gospel.

  538. Some of them are literally Greeks,

  539. synonym there for Gentiles,

  540. but with an emphasis on the Greek cultural background,

  541. taught to think and reason in a slightly different way,

  542. eating different foods,

  543. considering all days the same.

  544. And those people,

  545. Jews, Gentiles, slaves, free,

  546. are, verse 14,

  547. many parts of the one body.

  548. Now I warn you this morning,

  549. I'm going to labor this

  550. because I think this is super,

  551. super important for us.

  552. You can't miss this

  553. all the way through the scriptures,

  554. that God's people are made up

  555. of all kinds of people.

  556. Revelation chapter 7

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  557. that we were looking at

  558. with the kids earlier,

  559. this great final gathering

  560. of God's people

  561. is people from every tribe,

  562. language, and nation.

  563. And it's not that those cultural

  564. and historic differences

  565. are obliterated

  566. by membership

  567. of the local church,

  568. but rather they are

  569. an important aspect

  570. of membership

  571. of the local church,

  572. where languages

  573. and people groups

  574. are visible

  575. within the body of Christ

  576. so that we can praise God

  577. because in a way

  578. that only he can,

  579. he has brought together

  580. a diverse group of people

  581. without obliterating

  582. their difference,

  583. but by sanctifying

  584. their difference.

  585. The Greeks aren't pagans

  586. in glory,

  587. they're worshipping Jesus,

  588. not the pantheon of gods

  589. that they used to worship.

  590. The Jews are no longer trusting

  591. in their own righteousness

  592. and glory either,

  593. they're trusting in Christ alone,

  594. but still in a refined

  595. and glorified

  596. and sanctified ways,

  597. those differences

  598. remain visible,

  599. but united in Christ.

  600. Why?

  601. Well, because part of the way

  602. the church represents Christ

  603. as his body

  604. is by its diversity

  605. and not its uniformity.

  606. Let me try and put it

  607. like this if I can.

  608. The goal of Islam

  609. is to make all of its worshippers

  610. look the same.

  611. Yeah?

  612. To pray in row upon row

  613. of uniformed men

  614. bowing down

  615. at the same time.

  616. I think the little kid

  617. there in the middle

  618. didn't get the memo,

  619. did he?

  620. Why?

  621. Well, because Allah,

  622. the God of Islam,

  623. cannot handle

  624. cultural difference.

  625. So he obliterates it,

  626. bans it even.

  627. But instead,

  628. as we gather as a church

  629. on a Sunday,

  630. what we long for

  631. is not row upon row

  632. upon row of people

  633. who look exactly the same

  634. and are doing

  635. exactly the same thing.

  636. We're looking for

  637. row upon row upon row

  638. of people who look

  639. different to one another.

  640. Men and women,

  641. boys and girls,

  642. some in suits,

  643. some in shorts,

  644. some with tattoos

  645. at their arms,

  646. others with knots,

  647. faces from all over the world.

  648. And when they sing,

  649. you know,

  650. some people stand and sing

  651. and they're hardly moving.

  652. Wonder whether they died

  653. standing up.

  654. That's me.

  655. Others are dancing around

  656. with their arms in the air.

  657. Why?

  658. Well, because our God,

  659. the true God,

  660. is the God who made

  661. the whole world

  662. and all of its languages

  663. and cultures

  664. and all of its difference.

  665. You see,

  666. our God,

  667. the God of the Bible,

  668. the God who is really there,

  669. the God who made us,

  670. is the God who put rhythm

  671. in reggae music.

  672. Yeah?

  673. He put spice in chicken.

  674. Incredible.

  675. He's the God

  676. who put the twang

  677. in the Scouse accent

  678. that you'll notice

  679. some of my children have.

  680. He's the one who put the rhyming

  681. in Cockney rhyming slang.

  682. Our God is the God

  683. who made some people

  684. to dance

  685. and other people like me

  686. who can't dance.

  687. He's glorified

  688. in the excitement

  689. of a child

  690. because he made

  691. that excitement.

  692. He's glorified

  693. in the steadiness

  694. of a grandparent

  695. because he made that too.

  696. And the point is

  697. that coming to God

  698. in Christ

  699. doesn't obliterate

  700. those differences.

  701. It sanctifies them.

  702. It rives them

  703. of lust

  704. and pride

  705. and self-obsession.

  706. But the spice

  707. is still there.

  708. The rhythm

  709. is still there

  710. because God,

  711. the true God,

  712. is worshipped

  713. by all languages,

  714. tribes,

  715. peoples,

  716. and nations.

  717. I used to have

  718. this vague hope

  719. when I was at school

  720. because I was so bad

  721. at French.

  722. I thought maybe

  723. we'll all speak

  724. the same language

  725. in heaven

  726. and maybe there won't

  727. be French in heaven

  728. anymore.

  729. I won't have to learn it.

  730. But that's not right,

  731. is it?

  732. In eternity,

  733. God is glorified

  734. by a plethora

  735. of languages

  736. and we have

  737. thousands of years

  738. to learn them.

  739. What a great,

  740. diverse bunch

  741. of people

  742. worshipping God

  743. for his praise

  744. and his glory.

  745. Now,

  746. if you come back

  747. to the passage,

  748. you can see that

  749. Paul's point

  750. with this body image

  751. in verse 15 to 20

  752. is firstly

  753. to help us

  754. understand ourselves.

  755. Look down at verse 15.

  756. Let me just read it

  757. to you again.

  758. Now,

  759. if the foot should say,

  760. because I'm not a hand,

  761. I don't belong to the body,

  762. it wouldn't for that reason

  763. stop being part

  764. of the body.

  765. And if the ear

  766. should say,

  767. oh,

  768. because I'm not an eye,

  769. I don't belong to the body,

  770. it wouldn't for that reason

  771. stop being part of the body.

  772. If the whole body

  773. were an eye,

  774. where would the sense

  775. of hearing be?

  776. If the whole body

  777. were an ear,

  778. where would the sense

  779. of smell be?

  780. But in fact,

  781. God has placed the parts

  782. in the body,

  783. every one of them,

  784. just as he wanted them to be.

  785. If they were all one part,

  786. where would the body be?

  787. As it is,

  788. there are many parts

  789. but one body.

  790. Notice this.

  791. This is so important.

  792. In this first part

  793. of the passage,

  794. the voice,

  795. the person speaking

  796. is not the hand

  797. speaking to the foot

  798. to exclude it

  799. or the eye

  800. talking to the ear

  801. to exclude the ear.

  802. Rather,

  803. this is the foot

  804. saying to itself,

  805. I'm not a hand

  806. so I don't belong.

  807. The ear saying to itself

  808. that it's not an eye

  809. so it doesn't belong.

  810. In other words,

  811. the first thing

  812. the passage is addressing

  813. is personal insecurity.

  814. How do I understand

  815. my own difference

  816. to everybody else

  817. in the room?

  818. Why?

  819. Well, I think because

  820. Paul thinks

  821. the first person

  822. who has to come to terms

  823. with their difference

  824. from everybody else

  825. at church

  826. is not everybody else

  827. but you, me.

  828. I have to come to terms

  829. with the fact

  830. that I'm different

  831. to everybody else

  832. in the room.

  833. I have to come to terms

  834. with the fact

  835. that by belonging

  836. to church

  837. is by definition

  838. belonging to a group

  839. of people

  840. who are not like me.

  841. In other words,

  842. I don't walk into church

  843. and go,

  844. brilliant,

  845. that's a church

  846. for old people

  847. and I'm an old person

  848. or brilliant,

  849. that's a church

  850. for rich people

  851. and I'm a rich person

  852. or even the opposite

  853. or that's a church

  854. for rich people

  855. and I'm a poor person

  856. and I don't belong

  857. or that's a church

  858. for Caribbean people

  859. and I'm from Nigeria

  860. so I don't belong

  861. or that's a church

  862. for suit wearers

  863. and I don't have a suit

  864. so I don't belong.

  865. That's not true.

  866. Why?

  867. Look at verse 18.

  868. What's the true story

  869. of diversity

  870. in the local church?

  871. It's that God

  872. is placing people

  873. exactly where

  874. they're supposed to be.

  875. This is fantastic,

  876. isn't it?

  877. Through the door

  878. of faith in Christ,

  879. through God's sovereignty

  880. over where you live,

  881. who you know,

  882. the twists and turns

  883. of your life,

  884. God has brought

  885. you to this fellowship

  886. with your cultural difference

  887. and background

  888. and your particular gifts,

  889. your particular wounds

  890. and needs,

  891. your insights

  892. and perspectives

  893. because this

  894. is exactly

  895. where he wants you

  896. and without you

  897. and without your difference

  898. to everyone here,

  899. well, we'd all be worse off

  900. like a body

  901. with no sense of smell

  902. or no feet

  903. or no eyes for seeing

  904. and just because

  905. you think you don't fit

  906. doesn't mean

  907. you don't belong

  908. because actually

  909. the fact that you don't fit

  910. means you do belong.

  911. See, this is it.

  912. When you and I

  913. walk into church,

  914. we say,

  915. brilliant,

  916. this is where I belong.

  917. Not because everybody

  918. looks like me,

  919. not because everybody

  920. sounds like me,

  921. not because everyone

  922. dresses like me.

  923. That's a terrible church.

  924. If you find yourself

  925. in that church,

  926. run away.

  927. Instead,

  928. you walk into church

  929. and you see,

  930. what do you see?

  931. You see the Lord Jesus.

  932. How do you see

  933. the Lord Jesus?

  934. Because you see

  935. that everybody

  936. is different to you

  937. but that you belong

  938. to them through

  939. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  940. That you are part

  941. of this mosaic

  942. that Jesus is putting

  943. together to his glory.

  944. Jesus and the power

  945. of his cross

  946. is the only one

  947. who can bring together

  948. all of these

  949. cultural differences

  950. and hold them

  951. for his glory.

  952. Thirdly,

  953. see Jesus

  954. seeing others

  955. difference from me.

  956. This then,

  957. I think,

  958. is the focus

  959. in the next part

  960. of chapter 12

  961. and verses 21

  962. down to verse 26.

  963. The temptation here,

  964. I think,

  965. is slightly different.

  966. And I don't think

  967. the temptation

  968. is so much

  969. to say to others,

  970. oh, you don't belong here.

  971. I think perhaps

  972. we all know that's wrong.

  973. Rather,

  974. the temptation is,

  975. I think,

  976. to say that other people

  977. aren't so valuable here.

  978. Do you notice that?

  979. The temptation

  980. is that we look

  981. at others

  982. who are different

  983. in the church

  984. and we don't say,

  985. oh, you don't belong

  986. because we know

  987. that's too rude.

  988. Rather,

  989. we say,

  990. oh, no,

  991. you're not as honourable

  992. or as important

  993. as everybody else

  994. to use the language

  995. of the passage.

  996. Let me give you

  997. a concrete example

  998. so that we can

  999. work out

  1000. what we're talking about.

  1001. Turn back,

  1002. just if you will,

  1003. to chapter 11

  1004. of 1 Corinthians.

  1005. You see a practical

  1006. outworking of this

  1007. in verse 17.

  1008. The Corinthian church,

  1009. you should,

  1010. if you've never read

  1011. 1 Corinthians,

  1012. read 1 Corinthians

  1013. because it will

1014. fill you full of joy

  1015. because the Corinthian church

  1016. was such a mess

1017. and yet Paul still thinks

  1018. they're full of saints

  1019. and they're worshipping

1020. for the glory of God.

  1021. If you thought,

1022. if you think our church

  1023. is messy,

1024. you should read 1 Corinthians.

  1025. It's really,

  1026. really,

  1027. really great.

  1028. They come together

1029. to celebrate the Lord's Supper.

  1030. This is how chaotic

  1031. their church life is.

  1032. They come together

1033. to celebrate the Lord's Supper.

  1034. They're gathering

  1035. on a Sunday,

  1036. and so some people

  1037. are having to work

  1038. on a Sunday

  1039. and they celebrate

  1040. the Lord's Supper

  1041. but they don't wait

  1042. for one another

  1043. until the slaves

  1044. in the church

  1045. come late to church

  1046. because they've been

  1047. working all day.

  1048. They've been working late

1049. and they don't get there

  1050. as quickly as everybody

1051. else is able to get there.

1052. By the time they arrive

  1053. in church,

1054. all of the Lord's Supper

  1055. has been eaten

  1056. and people are even

  1057. drunk in church

  1058. because they've drunk

1059. so much of the wine.

  1060. The slaves don't get

  1061. to have any

  1062. of the Lord's Supper.

  1063. It was totally,

  1064. totally chaotic.

  1065. He says that

  1066. there's nothing

  1067. to commend

  1068. the way they do

  1069. the Lord's Supper.

  1070. In fact,

  1071. it's doing more harm

  1072. than good.

  1073. He's saying to them,

  1074. listen,

  1075. your church gathering

  1076. is so bad.

  1077. Close the doors

  1078. and don't do it

1079. because it would be better

1080. if you didn't do it

1081. than the way you are doing it.

  1082. Crazy, isn't it?

1083. But what does he say

  1084. in verse 20

  1085. about what that means

  1086. for everybody

  1087. in the church?

1088. Listen to how he puts it.

  1089. Verse 20,

1090. so then when you come together

  1091. it's not the Lord's Supper

  1092. you eat.

1093. For when you are eating,

1094. some of you go ahead

1095. with your own private suppers.

  1096. As a result,

  1097. one person remains hungry,

  1098. that's a person coming late,

  1099. and another gets drunk.

  1100. Don't you have homes

1101. to eat and drink in

  1102. or do you despise

  1103. the church of God

  1104. by humiliating

  1105. those who have nothing?

1106. What shall I say to you?

  1107. Shall I praise you?

  1108. Certainly not

  1109. in this matter.

1110. Now notice what he says.

  1111. Because of the way

  1112. they are doing it,

  1113. this ceases

1114. to be the Lord's Supper

1115. even for the rich people

1116. who get to eat it all

  1117. and drink it all.

  1118. Do you notice that?

  1119. Because the rich

  1120. aren't valuing the poor

  1121. in the sharing

  1122. of the Lord's Supper,

1123. then not even the rich

  1124. are celebrating

  1125. the Lord's Supper.

  1126. You know,

  1127. they're eating and drinking

  1128. but it's not the Lord's Supper

  1129. they're celebrating.

  1130. In other words,

  1131. the lack of honoring

  1132. of the weak

  1133. in the church

  1134. means that church

  1135. is no longer church

  1136. for the rich.

  1137. Now bring that back

  1138. to chapter 12

  1139. and it seems

  1140. that this tendency

  1141. of the church

  1142. to overlook

  1143. or not value

  1144. certain people

  1145. from certain backgrounds

  1146. or not to esteem

  1147. their gifts

1148. as much as other people's

  1149. particularly if people

  1150. can't speak in tongues

  1151. it seems.

  1152. They treat those people

  1153. as second class citizens

  1154. and Paul says

  1155. using the body metaphor

  1156. listen,

  1157. that's the opposite

  1158. of what church

  1159. should be like.

1160. When it comes to a body

  1161. the parts

  1162. that we are most

  1163. embarrassed about

  1164. work out which parts

  1165. those are yourself

  1166. we don't want to

  1167. show them in public

  1168. those are the parts

  1169. over which we take

  1170. the most care

  1171. verse 23

  1172. whereas the parts

  1173. that we don't

  1174. worry about

  1175. that we think

  1176. are great and attractive

  1177. well we don't need

  1178. to worry about them

  1179. at all do we

  1180. verse 24

1181. and so it should be

  1182. in the gathering

  1183. of the local church

  1184. that the weak

  1185. the vulnerable

  1186. those whose contribution

  1187. might be small

  1188. those are the people

  1189. we should take

  1190. extra care over

  1191. those we should

  1192. make sure we are

  1193. honoring in the

  1194. gatherings of the church

1195. again let me say to you

  1196. this is unique

  1197. in the church

  1198. of Jesus Christ

  1199. now if we said

  1200. before that the

  1201. God of Islam

  1202. obliterates cultural

  1203. difference

  1204. then notice that

  1205. the God of

  1206. Western materialism

  1207. runs over all

  1208. the weak and the

  1209. vulnerable

  1210. you've noticed

  1211. that haven't you

  1212. yeah at work

  1213. who is it that

  1214. gets esteemed

  1215. at work

  1216. is it the person

  1217. whose health

  1218. means that they've

  1219. had to drop

  1220. to part time

  1221. because they can't

  1222. any longer work

  1223. full time

  1224. no it's not

  1225. is it

  1226. everyone's

  1227. sort of scowling

  1228. about them

  1229. or talking about

  1230. them behind their

  1231. back

  1232. is it the

  1233. cleaner who

  1234. nobody notices

  1235. who empties the

  1236. bin down the

  1237. row of desks

  1238. and no one even

  1239. stops to say

  1240. thank you

  1241. of course they

  1242. don't honor that

  1243. who's the person

  1244. who's honored at

  1245. work

  1246. it's the person

  1247. who makes the

  1248. most money

  1249. isn't it

  1250. the person who

  1251. produces the

  1252. most

  1253. it's the person

  1254. whose name is

  1255. at the top

  1256. of the headed

  1257. paper

  1258. whenever we used

  1259. to have that

  1260. of course that's

  1261. how the world

  1262. works

  1263. not in the

  1264. church

  1265. in the body

  1266. of christ

  1267. it's different

  1268. because listen

  1269. your value

  1270. here is not a

  1271. function of your

  1272. productivity

  1273. your value

  1274. here is not

  1275. about the

  1276. glamour of

  1277. your gifting

  1278. your value

  1279. here is in

  1280. what

  1281. you're attached

  1282. to christ

  1283. jesus the

  1284. head

  1285. and the

  1286. weaker and the

  1287. more vulnerable

  1288. you are the

  1289. greater discretion

  1290. and care we

  1291. should treat

  1292. you with

  1293. see this is

  1294. it when you

  1295. walk into

  1296. church

  1297. you see

  1298. jesus

  1299. how

  1300. well you

  1301. see jesus

  1302. because that's

  1303. how everybody

  1304. joined the

  1305. church

  1306. you see

  1307. jesus because

  1308. you see

  1309. that you are

  1310. belonging to

  1311. a mosaic of

  1312. people that

  1313. he is gathering

  1314. in his name

  1315. and you see

  1316. jesus because

  1317. you see weak

  1318. and vulnerable

  1319. people being

  1320. cared for and

  1321. loved in a

  1322. way that cannot

  1323. be explained

  1324. other than

  1325. the work of

  1326. christ

  1327. jesus loves

  1328. the weak

  1329. and the

  1330. broken

  1331. gathers them

  1332. into his

  1333. church a

  1334. bruised reed

  1335. he doesn't

  1336. break and a

  1337. smouldering

  1338. wick he

  1339. won't put

  1340. out

  1341. finally then

  1342. we see

  1343. jesus in

  1344. our shared

  1345. priority

  1346. our shared

  1347. priority

  1348. i want you

  1349. to notice

  1350. as we

  1351. finish that

  1352. the passage

  1353. comes on

  1354. to say

  1355. one more

  1356. important thing

  1357. in these

  1358. closing verses

  1359. see if

  1360. church displays

  1361. jesus by

  1362. being one

  1363. body in

  1364. many parts

  1365. then it

  1366. also shows

  1367. jesus in

  1368. what it

  1369. does together

  1370. let me

  1371. reread these

  1372. closing verses

  1373. to you

  1374. verse 27

  1375. now you

  1376. are the

  1377. body of

  1378. christ and

  1379. each one of

  1380. you is a

  1381. part of it

  1382. and god has

  1383. placed in

  1384. the church

  1385. first of

  1386. all apostles

  1387. second

  1388. prophets

  1389. third teachers

  1390. then miracles

  1391. then gifts

  1392. of healing

  1393. of helping

  1394. of guidance

  1395. and of

  1396. different kinds

  1397. of tongues

  1398. are all

  1399. apostles

  1400. are all

  1401. prophets

  1402. are all

  1403. teachers

  1404. do all

  1405. work

  1406. miracles

  1407. do all

  1408. have gifts

  1409. of healing

  1410. do all

  1411. speak in

  1412. tongues

  1413. do all

  1414. interpret

  1415. now

  1416. eagerly

  1417. desire the

  1418. greater gifts

  1419. and yet i

  1420. will show you

  1421. the most

  1422. excellent way

  1423. now as you

  1424. first read

  1425. that it

  1426. sounds like a

  1427. contradiction of

  1428. everything else

  1429. we've just

  1430. been saying

  1431. surely the

  1432. whole point

  1433. that we've been

  1434. noticing is that

  1435. there's not

  1436. supposed to be a

  1437. hierarchy in

  1438. church but now

  1439. it seems as if

  1440. paul is giving

  1441. one but look

  1442. carefully with me

  1443. at the verses

  1444. and let's see the

  1445. point together

  1446. there's a theme

  1447. running through

  1448. these chapters

  1449. which we notice

  1450. in chapter 11

  1451. and it's carrying

  1452. on all the way

  1453. through into

  1454. chapter 14

  1455. it's all about

  1456. their gatherings

  1457. as a local

  1458. church what they

  1459. do when they

  1460. come together

  1461. and the point

  1462. is that a

  1463. diverse company

  1464. of people

  1465. the body of

  1466. christ

  1467. should have

  1468. a particular

  1469. focus when

  1470. they gather

  1471. together

  1472. and what is

  1473. that purpose

  1474. well it's the

  1475. purpose of

  1476. building one

  1477. another up in

  1478. the lord

  1479. he calls it

  1480. edifying one

  1481. another

  1482. if you glance

  1483. over to

  1484. chapter 14

  1485. and verse 12

  1486. you'll see paul

  1487. spell it out

  1488. there let me

  1489. read chapter 14

  1490. verse 12 to

  1491. you

  1492. so it is with

  1493. you since you

  1494. are eager for

  1495. gifts of the

  1496. spirit you

  1497. really want

  1498. these exciting

  1499. gifts of the

  1500. spirit if you're

  1501. eager for those

  1502. try to excel

  1503. in what those

  1504. that build up

  1505. the church

  1506. now those gifts

  1507. that edify the

  1508. church or build

  1509. up the church

  1510. are listed in an

  1511. order at the

  1512. end of chapter

  1513. 12 and the

  1514. point is not

  1515. that this is a

  1516. complete list

  1517. it's not supposed

  1518. to be a complete

  1519. list instead the

  1520. point is that the

  1521. list is in the

  1522. opposite order to

  1523. which the

  1524. corinthian church

  1525. would have put

  1526. them right

  1527. because right at

  1528. the bottom of the

  1529. list the least

  1530. valuable thing to

  1531. do when you're

  1532. gathered together

  1533. is what

  1534. speaking tongues

  1535. he says it's

  1536. right at the

  1537. bottom and it

  1538. starts instead

  1539. with the apostles

  1540. and prophets and

  1541. then teaching and

  1542. then the signs that

  1543. in the first

  1544. century particularly

  1545. accompanied the

  1546. apostles ministry

  1547. miracles and

  1548. healing then

  1549. helping and

  1550. guidance or

  1551. administration and

  1552. last of all

  1553. tongues now at

  1554. the end of a

  1555. long sermon I am

  1556. not going to get

  1557. into a debate

  1558. about charismatic

  1559. gifts you can

  1560. ask me that after

  1561. lunch as we

  1562. gather again

  1563. rather the point

  1564. seems to be here

  1565. the big point is

  1566. that the church

  1567. is to have a

  1568. particular focus

  1569. when it gathers

  1570. together and the

  1571. focus is not

  1572. showing off your

  1573. gift not on

  1574. impressing others

  1575. but on building

  1576. one another up

  1577. and how is the

  1578. church built up

  1579. well it's done by

  1580. prioritizing the

  1581. teaching and

  1582. proclamation of the

  1583. apostles message

  1584. you notice that

  1585. that's why they're at

  1586. the top of the

  1587. list a message

  1588. testified to by

  1589. the miracles and

  1590. healings that

  1591. accompany their work

  1592. it means that the

  1593. gathering of the

  1594. local church is not

  1595. primarily about

  1596. self-expression

  1597. you might be good

  1598. at many things that

  1599. you don't get to

  1600. show off in the

  1601. gatherings of the

  1602. local church

  1603. that's okay because

  1604. the gatherings of the

  1605. local church are not

  1606. meant to be the

  1607. occasion for us to

  1608. show off all the

  1609. different things we're

  1610. good at

  1611. rather gatherings of

  1612. the local church are

  1613. to be about building

  1614. one another up

  1615. and we do that

  1616. don't we as the

  1617. message of the

  1618. apostles and

  1619. prophets is made

  1620. clear as the

  1621. gospel is made

  1622. clear we are

  1623. built up and

  1624. that doesn't make

  1625. the teacher a more

  1626. important person it

  1627. doesn't even make the

  1628. apostles and prophets

  1629. more important than

  1630. us you know they're

  1631. Christians just like we

  1632. are they're standing

  1633. before God is exactly

1634. the same as ours they

  1635. have been baptized by

  1636. the same spirit and

  1637. they drink the same

  1638. spirit but it does

  1639. give their work an

  1640. important place in the

  1641. gatherings of the

1642. church even as we all

1643. use our gifts to make

  1644. those times useful

1645. even as we guide and

  1646. encourage one another in

1647. the body of Christ and

1648. we do that verse 31 in

  1649. the most excellent way

  1650. what is the most

  1651. excellent way love

1652. chapter 13 so here it

1653. is let me finish now

  1654. when you walk into

  1655. West Kilburn Baptist

  1656. Church you see Jesus

  1657. because you are seeing

1658. his body a body of

  1659. people you have been

  1660. uniquely joined to him

  1661. by faith where everyone

1662. is different in a way

  1663. that reflects the

  1664. glorious diversity of

  1665. our triune God Father

1666. Son and Spirit a place

1667. where we value the weak

1668. and the needy just like

1669. the Lord Jesus did and a

1670. place where you find his

  1671. message of salvation is

1672. sung about is read is

  1673. prayed and is preached

  1674. that together we might

1675. see the Lord Jesus in his

1676. beauty and his glory let me

  1677. pray for us

  1678. heavenly father thank you

1679. that you have made us all

  1680. different and that we

1681. gather and come to church in

1682. the same way by faith in the

1683. Lord Jesus Christ thank you

1684. that that means that nobody

1685. here is a better Christian

1686. than anybody else because we

1687. have all been made right by

1688. Jesus and not by our

  1689. actions thank you that

  1690. you've made us all

  1691. different to one another

  1692. and that that difference

  1693. doesn't mean that we don't

1694. belong but that means we

1695. have a unique opportunity to

1696. bring you glory as we

  1697. gather together in Jesus

1698. name and we pray that our

  1699. church and our gatherings

  1700. together would build one

1701. another up in faith as we

1702. make the gospel clear in the

1703. words that we sing in our

  1704. conversations with one

1705. another in the things that

1706. are prayed in your word as

1707. it's opened and taught bring

1708. yourself glory we pray in

  1709. Jesus name amen amen
