  1. So the reading is from 1 Peter chapter 2, verses 4 to 12.

    1 Peter 2:4–12

  2. And it says this,

  3. As you come to him, the living stone, rejected by humans,

  4. but chosen by God and precious to him,

  5. you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house

  6. to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices

  7. acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

  8. For in the scripture it says,

  9. See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone,

  10. and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.

  11. Now to you who believe, this stone is precious,

  12. but to those who do not believe,

  13. the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,

  14. and a stone that causes people to stumble,

  15. and a rock that makes them fall.

  16. They'll stumble because they disobey message,

  17. which is also what they were destined for.

  18. But you are a chosen people,

  19. a royal priesthood,

  20. a holy nation,

  21. God's special possession,

  22. that you may declare the praises of him

  23. who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

  24. Once you were not a people,

  25. but now you are the people of God.

  26. Once you had not received mercy,

  27. but now you have received mercy.

  28. Dear friends,

  29. I urge you,

  30. as foreigners and exiles,

  31. to abstain from the sinful desires

  32. which wage war against your soul.

  33. Live such good lives among the pagans,

  34. that though they accuse you of doing wrong,

  35. they may see your good deeds

  36. and glorify God on the day he visits us.

  37. Amen.

  38. Thanks, Yvonne.

  39. Over the last few weeks,

  40. I don't know whether you've been with us,

  41. but over the last six weeks,

  42. I've been trying to build really a sort of a foundation

  43. for our church family.

  44. The sort of theological foundations for us as a church.

  45. What is it that's going to be important to us

  46. as we move forwards?

  47. So you might remember at the beginning of July,

  48. we started with this idea

  49. that our church is to be centered

  50. on the cross of Jesus Christ.

  51. That the message of the cross of Christ,

  52. which is the message of the whole Bible,

  53. it's right at the center of the scriptures,

  54. is to be at the center of our church life.

  55. It's the message of the cross which makes the church.

  56. It's the preaching of the message of Jesus Christ

  57. in God's word that makes us the people of God.

  58. That's where we started.

  59. We then went on to say that as a church,

  60. we rely absolutely on the Spirit.

  61. We know that we are absolutely powerless in ourselves

  62. to convert anybody, to change people,

  63. or to equip one another for the Christian life.

  64. There is nothing that we can do on our own

  65. to open blind eyes to the truth of the gospel.

  66. If our church is going to be revitalized,

  67. if our church is going to grow by people coming to know

  68. and love and trust the Lord Jesus,

  69. it's going to be because God does it by his Spirit,

  70. not because we do it in our strength.

  71. Following on from that, then you might remember

  72. that we said that we were going to be a local church

  73. that are committed to corporate prayer.

  74. We were startled by the book of Acts

  75. just how many times the local church

  76. gathers together to pray.

  77. It's like breathing for them.

  78. They can't live without it.

  79. We know that in a way that we don't really fully understand,

  80. God, in his sovereign power,

  81. chooses to work through the prayers of his people.

  82. Then we thought next about diversity, didn't we?

  83. The fact that God is bringing us together.

  84. He hasn't made us all the same.

  85. In fact, God is glorified by stitching together

  86. a group of people who are very different to one another,

  87. both in the gifts that they have,

  88. but also that the cultures that they're from,

  89. the languages that they speak.

  90. And so we found that God is stitching together

  91. something that is beautiful and glorious

  92. because of our difference.

  93. Our fifth foundation, which we were looking at last week,

  94. was then discipleship.

  95. And you might remember this.

  96. It's only last week, so I'm hoping that you might.

  97. That our single biggest contribution

  98. to the life of the church is what?

  99. To grow as a Christian.

  100. That's the biggest contribution that we make.

  101. It doesn't matter whether we give thousands of pounds

  102. or hundreds of volunteer hours.

  103. If we are not growing as Christians,

  104. if we're not growing in our love of the Lord

  105. and our Christ-likeness and our eagerness to live for him,

  106. we will fundamentally be damaging the church,

  107. not blessing the church,

  108. because the greatest contribution we can make

  109. is to grow in Christ-likeness.

  110. And now that brings us to this week,

  111. and that is this one, engaged in evangelism.

  112. And that means we've got one more to go,

  113. which I'm going to do when we get back from holiday.

  114. And you might know what that is,

  115. but if you don't,

  116. I'm going to leave it as a surprise for you

  117. for when I come back from holiday.

  118. So this week, we're thinking about evangelism,

  119. telling others about Jesus.

  120. This is the idea that our church exists

  121. not just for itself,

  122. but to be a witness to the world about the gospel.

  123. We want to grow, don't we,

  124. as a church, numerically,

  125. not from stealing people from other churches,

  126. but from people coming from our friends

  127. and our families, our community,

  128. to know Jesus for themselves.

  129. So we're a church that engages in evangelism,

  130. telling people about Jesus.

  131. Now, to tackle that subject,

  132. I want, if I can, to draw your attention

  133. to just a single phrase

  134. in the reading that we've just had.

  135. If I were an old-fashioned preacher,

  136. I would say this is my text for this morning.

  137. Do you remember when you used to go to church

  138. and they used to announce the text for the morning?

  139. Well, that's what we're doing this morning.

  140. We're just looking at a single phrase.

  141. It's there in the second half of verse nine

  142. that we read with the children earlier.

  143. It's this,

  144. that you may declare the praises of him

  145. who called you out of darkness

  146. into his wonderful light.

  147. Now, before we get to all of the detail of this,

  148. I want you to notice that that phrase

  149. is essentially a purpose statement.

  150. It's a purpose statement.

  151. It starts, isn't it,

  152. with that you may.

  153. In other words,

  154. that statement is the outworking

  155. of something that's gone before.

  156. The declaration of the praises of God

  157. is the purpose of what precedes it.

  158. So like a delivery driver

  159. is given a van full of parcels

  160. that she might deliver them

  161. or a student is given an exam paper

  162. that they might answer the questions

  163. or at least try to answer the questions.

  164. So here we see that

  165. the declaration of the praises of God

  166. is the result of something

  167. that has been given or done.

  168. So the declaration of the praises of God

  169. in our passage

  170. are what comes from what comes before it,

  171. which is being a chosen people,

  172. a royal priesthood,

  173. a holy nation,

  174. God's special possession.

  175. Now Peter's point is that

  176. the church is like the new Israel

  177. and I would love to,

  178. we don't have time to do it,

  179. but to go into all the ways

  180. that this reflects Old Testament passages.

  181. But Peter's point essentially

  182. is that when you read Israel

  183. in the Old Testament,

  184. now you're looking at church

  185. in the New Testament,

  186. the chosen people of God,

  187. people selected by him

  188. to be his servants,

  189. a royal priesthood,

  190. people who have access

  191. to God's presence,

  192. a holy nation,

  193. people with special status,

  194. before God,

  195. his special possession,

  196. people who are cared for

  197. and protected by God.

  198. They are all of those things,

  199. says Peter,

  200. that they may declare my praises,

  201. praises of God in the world.

  202. Now that means,

  203. and again,

  204. listen,

  205. this is just,

  206. I'm just showing you obvious stuff here,

  207. but it's worth stating this clearly.

  208. It means that the church

  209. is the church

  210. not because they declare

  211. the praises of God.

  212. You get that?

  213. It's not the church

  214. becomes the church

  215. as it declares the praises of God.

  216. It's the other way around,

  217. isn't it?

  218. They declare the praises of God

  219. because they have been made

  220. the church by God.

  221. God makes the church,

  222. not us.

  223. You don't become the church

  224. by coming and declaring

  225. the praises of God.

  226. You become the church

  227. by God being at work in us.

  228. And then he gives us a purpose.

  229. A purpose which,

  230. if you notice,

  231. the purpose of the church then

  232. is not really so much

  233. about me or you.

  234. The purpose of the church

  235. is not that we make cups of tea

  236. for one another,

  237. that we might feel nice about life.

  238. The church's purpose

  239. isn't even about self-help

  240. or self-improvement.

  241. God hasn't made us

  242. a chosen people

  243. and a holy nation

  244. so that we might

  245. get better versions of ourselves.

  246. It's not that, is it?

  247. It's not even that

  248. we might look down our noses

  249. at everybody else.

  250. Oh, I'm God's chosen

  251. and special people,

  252. not like you.

  253. It's not that either, is it?

  254. It's not so that

  255. we might have a nice club

  256. where everyone is like us

  257. and we feel normal.

  258. No, the that of church life,

  259. the so that of church life

  260. is so that you might declare

  261. the praises of him,

  262. of God.

  263. That's why we're here.

  264. That's why God has saved us.

  265. It's about him

  266. and his glory and not us.

  267. Let me try and say this carefully,

  268. but I want to kind of land

  269. this practically for us

  270. if I can.

  271. I want to suggest

  272. that one of the reasons

  273. that you and I struggle

  274. so much with church life,

  275. one of the reasons

  276. why we get so easily upset

  277. and diverted into conflict

  278. with one another

  279. is because we have missed

  280. the point of church life.

  281. Church exists not so much

  282. for the comfort

  283. of the people who come

  284. or belong.

  285. it's not existing

  286. to give them an opportunity

  287. to express themselves.

  288. The church exists

  289. for the glory of God.

  290. Now that's not to mean

  291. that comfort

  292. or opportunity to contribute

  293. are not important.

  294. I'm not saying that,

  295. but rather that they flow

  296. from the glory of God.

  297. The point is,

  298. if you come to church

  299. thinking mostly about

  300. your own feelings

  301. or mostly about

  302. what you need

  303. and not about

  304. the glory of God,

  305. you will leave disappointed

  306. because the gatherings

  307. of the church

  308. are about the glory of God.

  309. Church exists

  310. for the glory of God

  311. so that we might

  312. declare his praises.

  313. Now, there's one other thing

  314. to notice as well here

  315. before we move on,

  316. and that is that

  317. this is circular.

  318. So, let me try

  319. and explain this

  320. if I can.

  321. So, God here

  322. makes the church

  323. to new Israel

  324. that she might declare

  325. the praises of God.

  326. But think about it.

  327. What are God's praises?

  328. What does it mean

  329. to declare his praises?

  330. It's a very Christian phrase,

  331. isn't it?

  332. We might think

  333. we know what it means,

  334. but what does it actually mean?

  335. Well, Peter again

  336. is borrowing a phrase

  337. from the Old Testament,

  338. and the idea is

  339. that this is declaring

  340. what God has already done.

  341. When we praise God,

  342. we are not adding to God

  343. something that's lacking from him.

  344. Do you understand that?

  345. It's not the idea

  346. that we are adding something

  347. to God who would be less

  348. if we weren't doing it.

  349. Rather, we are articulating

  350. something in our praises

  351. that's already true.

  352. God is not like that

  353. year seven child

  354. who just needs lots of encouragement

  355. to get on with their work.

  356. Maybe you were like that

  357. year seven child.

  358. I think I probably was a bit.

  359. Oh, you're doing a great job.

  360. Carry on, won't you?

  361. Oh, look at that.

  362. You've done some great work,

  363. haven't you?

  364. Keep going.

  365. That's not how

  366. we're to talk to God.

  367. That's not what

  368. praising God means.

  369. Rather, here,

  370. the sense is that

  371. the praises of God

  372. are something

  373. that already belong to him

  374. because of who he is.

  375. So declaring his praises

  376. isn't making up

  377. for something lacking in God

  378. so much as it is

  379. saying aloud

  380. who God is

  381. and what he's done.

  382. Listen, this is what God is like.

  383. He is praiseworthy

  384. in his being.

  385. Look at what he's done.

  386. Which, if you notice this,

  387. this is then a giant circle

  388. because if you look down

  389. at our little phrase,

  390. how is it that the church

  391. become the church

  392. to declare the praises of God?

  393. How is it that they become the church?

  394. How do we become a chosen people,

  395. a royal priesthood,

  396. a holy nation?

  397. Well, God did it through choosing.

  398. And how did he choose?

  399. Well, he called, notice,

  400. he called us out of darkness

  401. into his wonderful light.

  402. In other words,

  403. God speaks

  404. and calls out his people.

  405. So he speaks the gospel

  406. and calls his people

  407. out of the world,

  408. out of darkness

  409. and into light.

  410. People who are living

  411. in the darkness

  412. of their own sin

  413. and lostness,

  414. people who are ignorant of God,

  415. the God who made them,

  416. estranged from the purpose

  417. of our existence.

  418. God calls those people

  419. through what he says

  420. in verse 8

  421. is a message.

  422. What is the message?

  423. Well, the message

  424. is the praiseworthy deeds

  425. of God.

  426. You get it?

  427. God calls his people

  428. into existence

  429. as they hear

  430. the declaration

  431. of his praiseworthy deeds.

  432. So, let me try

  433. and put it on the slide.

  434. The deeds

  435. of the praiseworthy God

  436. are declared.

  437. You hear them

  438. and it calls out

  439. God's people.

  440. Oh, God is the God

  441. who saves his people.

  442. He's saving me.

  443. And as he calls you,

  444. you then become somebody

  445. who declares

  446. the praises of God,

  447. which does what?

  448. It calls out

  449. the other people of God.

  450. So in this giant circle,

  451. generation upon generation,

  452. declaring the praiseworthy deeds

  453. of God,

  454. calling out the people of God

  455. who will declare

  456. the praises of God,

  457. which will call out

  458. the people of God,

  459. which will declare

  460. the praises of God,

  461. which will call out

  462. the people of God,

  463. which will declare,

  464. and it goes on

  465. from generation

  466. to generation,

  467. from city to city,

  468. from nation to nation.

  469. The message has been heard

  470. and God's people

  471. have been called out.

  472. Here's the thing.

  473. Jesus says that

  474. that circle is so solid

  475. and unbreakable

  476. that the gates of hell

  477. will not prevail against it.

  478. No one will be able

  479. to stop it

  480. from generation

  481. to generation.

  482. Now, put all of that

  483. together for a moment,

  484. and I think the point

  485. of our text is this,

  486. that hearing the message

  487. of Christ creates

  488. a church who exists

  489. to declare the message

  490. of Christ.

  491. I'll say that again.

  492. Hearing the message

  493. of Christ creates

  494. a church who exists

  495. to declare the message

  496. of Christ.

  497. That's how God

  498. gets glory in the world.

  499. Now, there are literally

  500. thousands and thousands

  501. of implications of that

  502. for us this morning,

  503. but I'm going to be kind

  504. to you.

  505. I'm going on holiday

  506. tomorrow,

  507. and so I don't still want

  508. to be here on Monday morning,

  509. and so I'm going to give you

  510. three rather than a thousand.

  511. Let me show you three ways

  512. this particularly relates

  513. to evangelism,

  514. particularly relates

  515. to our evangelism.

  516. First one is this.

  517. Evangelism is leaky worship.

  518. Evangelism is leaky worship.

  519. In other words, evangelism,

  520. this idea of telling other people

  521. about Jesus,

  522. is what happens

  523. because we are unable

  524. to keep the gospel

  525. to ourselves.

  526. Churches quite often,

  527. I think,

  528. will nag their church members

  529. into doing evangelism,

  530. won't they?

  531. Say, listen,

  532. if you're not going

  533. to share the gospel,

  534. then you're not really

  535. a proper Christian.

  536. If you're not going

  537. to tell other people

  538. about Jesus,

  539. you're not a proper Christian.

  540. You need to sign up

  541. to be involved

  542. in this evangelistic crusade.

  543. You need to give out leaflets

  544. with me on this street corner.

  545. But our text this morning

  546. shows us that that approach

  547. is not quite right,

  548. not because evangelism

  549. and telling others

  550. about Jesus is not important,

  551. or because handing out

  552. leaflets is wrong.

  553. Of course it's not,

  554. but rather because it's

  555. putting things

  556. the wrong way around,

  557. isn't it?

  558. The cart before the horse.

  559. Our text this morning

  560. reminds us that the purpose

  561. of the Christian life

  562. is not evangelism

  563. so much as it is

  564. praising God

  565. for who he really is.

  566. And Peter's point here

  567. is that praising God

  568. for who he really is

  569. leaks into evangelism.

  570. It pours out of us

  571. in lots of different ways.

  572. It spills over.

  573. Look down at verse 11.

  574. What does he say?

  575. Dear friends,

  576. I urge you as foreigners

  577. and exiles

  578. to abstain from sinful desires

  579. which wage war

  580. against your soul.

  581. Live such good lives

  582. among the pagans

  583. that though they accuse you

  584. of doing wrong,

  585. they may see your good deeds

  586. and glorify you on the day

  587. when God visits us.

  588. You see, the idea is

  589. that they are spilling over

  590. into the world.

  591. Read across in chapter 3,

  592. verse 15.

  593. He says it again there,

  594. doesn't he?

  595. But in your hearts

  596. revere Christ as Lord.

  597. Always be prepared

  598. to give an answer

  599. to everyone who asks you

  600. to give a reason

  601. for the hope that you have.

  602. How do you prepare

  603. to give an answer

  604. for the hope that you have?

  605. Not simply by swatting up,

  606. but by what?

  607. Revering Christ as Lord

  608. in your heart.

  609. Christ will spill out.

  610. This is what I was trying

  611. to illustrate with the kids

  612. this morning.

  613. As our Christian lives

  614. are full to the brim

  615. with the glory of God

  616. and the goodness

  617. of the Lord Jesus,

  618. we are spilling it

  619. all over the place.

  620. You know, declaring

  621. the praises of God,

  622. you'll spill it out

  623. at work,

  624. in your family,

  625. you'll spill it out

  626. with the people

  627. who live in your block,

  628. on your social media posts,

  629. at your mates at uni

  630. or at school.

  631. Because this worship of God,

  632. this amazement

  633. at the greatness of God

  634. and his works in Christ,

  635. he doesn't switch off

  636. when you walk out

  637. those doors at the back.

  638. He's there all the time.

  639. Now, let me try and suggest

  640. this means there's

  641. a principle at work.

  642. It's at work in us corporately,

  643. but it's at work in us

  644. individually as well.

  645. So this is at work

  646. in you and me this morning,

  647. if we're a Christian

  648. this morning.

  649. And that is

  650. our evangelistic usefulness,

  651. our effectiveness

  652. at telling other people

  653. about Jesus

  654. is a direct function

  655. of how excited I am

  656. by what the Lord Jesus

  657. has done for me.

  658. Do you get that?

  659. My effectiveness

  660. in evangelism,

  661. sharing the gospel

  662. with my friends,

  663. my family

  664. who don't know Christ,

  665. is directly related

  666. to how encouraged I am

  667. or how enthusiastic I am

  668. or how excited I am

  669. about what Jesus

  670. has done for me.

  671. And that means

  672. that for us as a church,

  673. we don't encourage evangelism

  674. so much by starting

  675. new activities

  676. as we do by reminding

  677. one another

  678. of the greatness

  679. of the Lord Jesus

  680. and making sure

  681. that we are all excited

  682. by what Christ

  683. has done for us.

  684. Because if we are excited

  685. by Christ,

  686. it will spill out

  687. all over the place

  688. and you won't be able

  689. to stop it.

  690. Let me try,

  691. if I can this morning,

  692. to try and motivate us

  693. for evangelism

  694. in the way that Peter's

  695. trying to get it

  696. to happen.

  697. Look down at verse 9

  698. and let's just

  699. have a think about it

  700. with me.

  701. Let me ask you,

  702. if you're a Christian

  703. this morning,

  704. have you really reckoned

  705. with this idea

  706. that together

  707. we are God's chosen people?

  708. Just ponder on that

  709. for a moment.

  710. God has chosen us.

  711. Not because there's

  712. something worthy in us,

  713. not because he saw

  714. that we were good people.

  715. That's the great

  716. stumbling block

  717. of the previous verses

  718. that Yvonne read to us.

  719. That's why hell

  720. will be full of

  721. religious people

  722. who relied on

  723. their own efforts

  724. and thought they were

  725. better than other people.

  726. That is not the gospel,

  727. is it?

  728. The gospel is that

  729. God has chosen us

  730. because God

  731. in himself

  732. loves.

  733. He loves us

  734. because of his own

  735. loveliness,

  736. not ours.

  737. And he has chosen us

  738. out of the world

  739. to belong to him

  740. as his people

  741. for a reason

  742. that we cannot explain.

  743. A people who then

  744. get described

  745. as a royal priesthood.

  746. People who have

  747. access to God's

  748. very presence

  749. through the work

  750. of Christ's cross.

  751. So much so that

  752. if you're a Christian

  753. this morning,

  754. at any time,

  755. any of us

  756. in any place

  757. can call out to God,

  758. the God who made us,

  759. the God who rules

  760. and governs the world,

  761. and know

  762. that that God

  763. hears us.

  764. We have access to him

  765. like a child

  766. has access to a parent.

  767. And then we find,

  768. what does he say next?

  769. That we're a holy nation.

  770. That means that we are

  771. outside of the condemnation

  772. that our world faces

  773. for its sinful rebellion

  774. against the God

  775. who made us.

  776. We are free

  777. from the fear of hell.

  778. Death has no claim on us

  779. because through the action

  780. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  781. on the cross,

  782. God has made us

  783. despite our sin

  784. holy,

  785. perfect,

  786. justified,

  787. and sanctified.

  788. But I wonder

  789. if maybe best of all

  790. is the next phrase,

  791. isn't it?

  792. What does he say?

  793. You are God's

  794. special possession.

  795. His treasure.

  796. I don't know,

  797. if you're a young Christian

  798. or maybe you're

  799. a new Christian,

  800. it's easy to think

  801. that maybe the blessings

  802. of being a Christian

  803. are the stuff

  804. that God gives you.

  805. Maybe you think

  806. the blessings

  807. of the Christian life

  808. are mostly things

  809. that God might give you.

  810. Maybe he might give you

  811. good health

  812. or a nice family

  813. or a nice job

  814. or whatever it is.

  815. Actually,

  816. the blessing of the gospel

  817. is that God

  818. gives you himself

  819. and calls you

  820. his treasured possession.

  821. You're mine.

  822. You belong to me.

  823. Of all the things

  824. that I have,

  825. says God,

  826. and God owns everything,

  827. right?

  828. Of all the things

  829. that God has,

  830. you are my treasured

  831. possession,

  832. he says.

  833. Can you imagine that?

  834. I'm not going to let you go.

  835. I'm not going to let

  836. anything snatch you

  837. out of my hand.

  838. I want you to know,

  839. says God,

  840. that there's nothing

  841. that can separate you

  842. from my love.

  843. There's no height,

  844. nor depth,

  845. no trouble,

  846. no hardship,

  847. no persecution,

  848. no poverty,

  849. no danger,

  850. no sword,

  851. nothing in all creation,

  852. even angels or demons

  853. that can separate you

  854. from my love

  855. in Christ Jesus.

  856. And listen,

  857. if you're a Christian

  858. this morning,

  859. that's true for you,

  860. right?

  861. That's true of you.

  862. And I defy you

  863. to keep it to yourself

  864. if you understand it.

  865. You just won't be able to.

  866. I bet you.

  867. If you really get this,

  868. you won't be able

  869. to stop talking about it.

  870. You'll be like a new parent

  871. who just can't shut up

  872. about their child

  873. or the colleague

  874. who's returned

  875. from that fantastic

  876. holiday of a lifetime

  877. and is just constantly

  878. showing you photos

  879. on their phone

  880. of, oh,

  881. did I show you this one?

  882. Oh, what about this one?

  883. What about that one?

  884. Or the guy on the bus

  885. who's just won 100 pounds

  886. on a scratch card

  887. and is going around

  888. high-fiving everyone

  889. on the bus?

  890. You'll be like that guy.

  891. Let me tell you,

  892. I'm God's special possession.

  893. He loves me.

  894. He gave his son for me.

  895. I'm holy.

  896. I'm free from the condemnation

  897. that the world faces.

  898. God loves me.

  899. It will leak out of you

  900. all over the place.

  901. Right, second implication.

  902. We need to move

  903. a little bit faster.

  904. Evangelism requires the church.

  905. Evangelism requires the church.

  906. Now, I think this could

  907. be misunderstood here,

  908. so I want to be very careful

  909. and you need to listen carefully.

  910. I'm not saying

  911. that individuals

  912. cannot engage

  913. in evangelism,

  914. nor am I saying

  915. that all you need to do

  916. is drag your

  917. non-Christian friends

  918. to church

  919. and I will do the rest.

  920. That's not right.

  921. If you're a non-Christian friend

  922. this morning,

  923. you've been dragged here,

  924. I'm very sorry.

  925. That is not our intention.

  926. I can only apologize.

  927. The truth is,

  928. as individuals,

  929. we do need to make

  930. the most of the opportunities

  931. that God gives us

  932. to share the gospel.

  933. You know,

  934. whether that's

  935. over the dinner table

  936. with an unbelieving spouse

  937. or walking to school

  938. with a child

  939. or on the bus

  940. with a stranger.

  941. But I think the point

  942. of our text this morning

  943. is that there is a sense

  944. in which the most

  945. evangelistically effective

  946. thing that we have,

  947. or, if you like,

  948. our sharpest tool

  949. for gospel declaration,

  950. if you like,

  951. is our life together.

  952. Yeah?

  953. The church itself,

  954. the church corporate,

  955. is evangelistic

  956. in its leaky worship.

  957. In other words,

  958. the evangelistic strategy

  959. of our church

  960. can't just be,

  961. hey, listen,

  962. go and tell as many people

  963. as you can about Jesus.

  964. Take the gospel out there,

  965. convert the nations,

  966. and when they're converted,

  967. bring them here.

  968. Rather,

  969. we must go out and tell,

  970. mustn't we?

  971. That's really clear

  972. in the Bible.

  973. But also,

  974. as we go out and tell,

  975. we are also saying,

  976. come and see.

  977. Come and see.

  978. Come and see

  979. what God is doing.

  980. He's choosing a people

  981. for himself.

  982. Let me introduce you to them.

  983. He's got a royal priesthood.

  984. Let me show you

  985. where they are

  986. so that you can engage with them.

  987. He's got a group of people

  988. whose very purpose

  989. is to declare

  990. the praiseworthy deeds of God.

  991. Come and listen

  992. to what they're saying.

  993. So this is for you

  994. if you're here this morning

  995. and not a Christian.

  996. It's brilliant

  997. that you're here this morning.

  998. So glad you've come this morning

  999. if you're not a Christian.

  1000. Because I think,

1001. not only do we want

  1002. to welcome you,

  1003. but also I think

1004. this is the best place

  1005. for you to understand

  1006. what being a Christian

  1007. is about.

  1008. Being a Christian

  1009. is not just

  1010. a private belief

1011. in a set of historical facts

1012. about a man called Jesus.

  1013. It does involve that.

  1014. But being a Christian

1015. is about more than that.

  1016. Being a Christian

  1017. is about coming

  1018. to realize and love

  1019. and give yourself

  1020. to the God

  1021. who made you

  1022. and who is now

  1023. making a new humanity.

  1024. A people who love

  1025. their maker,

  1026. who know him personally,

  1027. who worship him

  1028. in all of life

1029. and who praise him together.

  1030. A new humanity

  1031. who are forgiven

  1032. of their sins,

  1033. cleared of future judgment

  1034. by the atoning work

1035. of Christ on the cross.

  1036. A group of people

  1037. who are now gathered

  1038. into local churches

  1039. before one day

  1040. being gathered all together

1041. with all of God's people

  1042. from all history

  1043. and all geography.

  1044. Now it might be

  1045. this morning,

  1046. if you're not a Christian,

  1047. that you've got loads

  1048. of questions about that

1049. and I'd love to speak

  1050. to you about them.

1051. Please come and find me

  1052. at the end.

1053. But there is a sense

  1054. in which right now,

  1055. in this moment,

  1056. in this place,

  1057. you are getting

  1058. the clearest glimpse

  1059. of who God is

  1060. and what he's doing.

  1061. And if you are

  1062. a Christian this morning,

  1063. if you're a member

  1064. of the church here,

1065. then let me say to you

  1066. that your personal evangelism,

  1067. your own sharing

  1068. of the gospel,

  1069. must at some stage

  1070. include an invitation

  1071. to church

  1072. and exposure

  1073. to the family

  1074. of the church.

  1075. If you look over

  1076. at verse 12 again,

  1077. you can see that

  1078. Peter's assumption

  1079. is that the corporate

  1080. life of the church

  1081. is seen and witnessed.

  1082. Yeah?

  1083. When he says,

  1084. live such good lives

  1085. among the pagans,

  1086. his assumption is

  1087. that the pagans,

1088. i.e. people in the world

1089. who don't believe in Jesus,

1090. they will see your life.

  1091. How are they going

  1092. to see your life

1093. if you are hiding it

  1094. or you're only living

  1095. it among Christians?

  1096. You see,

  1097. there are two mistakes,

  1098. aren't there,

1099. what you can make here.

  1100. One is to think,

1101. oh, all I have to do

  1102. is just drag people

  1103. to church

  1104. and Steve will do

  1105. the evangelism for me.

  1106. Or the other mistake

1107. to make is to think

  1108. that the most evangelistically

  1109. effective thing

  1110. that we do

  1111. is outside of church,

  1112. you know,

  1113. talking to people

  1114. at Hyde Park

1115. or in the open air,

  1116. when the truth is

  1117. that it's the corporate

  1118. life of the church,

  1119. seen in the gatherings

  1120. of the church,

  1121. experienced in the

  1122. relationships of the church,

  1123. which is the witness

  1124. to the truth

  1125. of the gospel.

  1126. If you like,

  1127. evangelism,

  1128. a team sport,

  1129. something we're doing

  1130. together.

  1131. Oh, you've got lots

  1132. of questions about that,

  1133. have you?

  1134. I've got a friend

  1135. at church who's really

  1136. good at answering

  1137. those questions,

  1138. why don't you come

  1139. and meet them?

  1140. Actually, we're really

  1141. good friends,

  1142. we're totally different,

  1143. but we're really good

  1144. friends.

  1145. Actually, we call each

  1146. other brother and sister.

  1147. So here's the two-pronged

  1148. evangelistic strategy

1149. for us as a church.

  1150. One, if you're a member

  1151. of the church here,

  1152. you go and build

  1153. friendships and talk

  1154. to as many people

1155. as the Lord gives you

  1156. opportunity to speak

  1157. to about Jesus.

  1158. Don't spend all your

  1159. time in a Christian

  1160. bubble.

  1161. Go make friends with

  1162. people.

  1163. Tell them about Jesus.

  1164. And secondly,

  1165. we're going to organise

  1166. our church life,

  1167. our friendships,

  1168. our socialising,

  1169. our formal gatherings

  1170. in such a way

  1171. as their accessible,

  1172. clear witness

  1173. to the good news

1174. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1175. And so that you can

  1176. bring your friends

  1177. to any of them.

  1178. That's what we're

  1179. going to do.

1180. And if we do that,

  1181. and if the Lord

  1182. blesses us,

  1183. then the normal

  1184. testimony of someone

  1185. coming to faith

  1186. and getting baptised

  1187. in our church

  1188. will be something

  1189. like this.

  1190. Oh, I met Clifford.

  1191. I met David.

  1192. I met Jeff.

  1193. I met Joe.

  1194. And they were

  1195. chatting to me.

  1196. And they talked

  1197. to me about Jesus.

  1198. And they brought me

  1199. around for a meal.

  1200. And there were other

  1201. people from the church

  1202. there.

1203. And I got to meet them.

  1204. And there was something

  1205. about the way

  1206. that they related

1207. and spoke to one another

  1208. and loved one another.

1209. I'd never seen that before.

1210. And then I came to church

  1211. and week in,

  1212. week out,

  1213. I heard the message

  1214. of Jesus who died

1215. for me to forgive me

  1216. of my sins,

1217. that I might belong to him.

1218. And I found that actually

  1219. my heart was moving

  1220. to trust in Jesus

  1221. for myself.

  1222. That's the testimony

  1223. that we long for,

  1224. isn't it?

  1225. Let's pray that God

1226. does that for his glory.

  1227. Finally, evangelism

  1228. is about God's glory.

  1229. I think essentially

  1230. what the text

  1231. is telling us here

  1232. is that evangelism

1233. in the life of the church,

  1234. if you like,

  1235. is a subset

  1236. of something

1237. over the top of it.

  1238. In other words,

  1239. our great passion

  1240. in taking the Gospels

  1241. to the nations,

  1242. to the lost members

  1243. of our family,

  1244. is not so much

  1245. a passion for evangelism

1246. as it is a passion

  1247. for God's glory.

  1248. You see,

  1249. the tragedy in unbelief

  1250. is not so much

1251. that people are missing out

  1252. on the blessings

  1253. of the Gospel

  1254. for themselves,

1255. but that they're missing out

1256. on the glory of God.

1257. John Piper has a brilliant,

  1258. brilliant book on mission.

  1259. It's called

1260. Let the Nations Be Glad,

1261. and he puts it this way

1262. in the very first paragraph

  1263. of his book.

  1264. It's this.

  1265. He says,

  1266. missions,

  1267. or evangelism,

  1268. telling other people

  1269. about Jesus,

1270. is not the ultimate goal

  1271. of the church.

  1272. Worship is.

  1273. Missions exist

  1274. because worship doesn't.

  1275. Worship is ultimate,

  1276. not missions,

  1277. because God is ultimate,

  1278. not man.

1279. When this age is over

  1280. and the countless millions

  1281. of the redeemed

  1282. fall on their faces

1283. before the throne of God,

1284. missions will be no more.

  1285. It's a temporary necessity,

  1286. but worship abides forever.

  1287. Now, I know,

  1288. because we've said this

  1289. over and over

  1290. in these Sundays together,

  1291. that we are absolutely

1292. reliant on the work of God

  1293. to open people's hearts

  1294. to the Gospel.

1295. But I want to suggest to you

  1296. that he does that

1297. as we make the Gospel clear.

  1298. And I can't help but wonder

1299. if at times we share

1300. the Gospel in a really unclear way,

  1301. because we are unclear

  1302. about this primacy

1303. of the glory of God.

  1304. I don't know about you,

  1305. but I think often

1306. I can tend to share

1307. the Gospel something like this.

  1308. Do you know what?

  1309. You and I, we're sinners.

  1310. We've done stuff wrong.

  1311. And because of that,

  1312. we're going to hell

1313. to be judged by God

  1314. for eternity.

1315. But Jesus came to die

  1316. on the cross

1317. to forgive us of our sins

1318. so that we can get

1319. eternal life when we die.

1320. And that's how we share

  1321. the Gospel, isn't it?

  1322. Something like that.

  1323. And that's true.

  1324. None of that's wrong.

1325. But it's wrong in its emphasis

  1326. because it's very human-centered.

  1327. It makes the Gospel

  1328. as being the means

  1329. that God achieves something

1330. for us that we really want,

  1331. rather than the Gospel

  1332. being something about

  1333. who God is

1334. and what God really wants

  1335. in the world.

  1336. Actually, the Gospel

1337. is about the glory of God

  1338. first and foremost,

1339. before it's about anything else.

1340. And when most of our friends

  1341. hear the Gospel

1342. as we present it about them,

  1343. quite often they say,

  1344. well, I don't really feel sinful.

  1345. I don't really feel

  1346. as if my life

  1347. is missing something.

  1348. I'm not that bothered

1349. about God and His glory.

  1350. I don't see the importance

1351. of what you're talking about.

  1352. But Peter's point

  1353. is that the Gospel

1354. isn't really about us like that.

1355. It's about God and His glory.

  1356. We're better off sharing

  1357. the Gospel

  1358. or something like this,

  1359. saying, listen,

1360. have you thought about this?

  1361. Do you realize

  1362. that you exist,

1363. you live on a ball

  1364. that is spinning

1365. at thousands of miles an hour

1366. around another ball of fire?

  1367. Actually, your existence itself

  1368. is a miracle.

1369. And you are being sustained

  1370. in every moment

1371. by the God who made you.

1372. Have you thought about that?

  1373. That even the breath

  1374. that we have

1375. that we use to deny God

  1376. is the breath

1377. that He has given us

  1378. in that moment.

1379. Have you thought about that?

  1380. Can you imagine

  1381. that God

  1382. as the sustaining creator

  1383. of all things

  1384. is just offended

  1385. by the fact

  1386. that you use

1387. the life that He's given you

1388. on this amazing spinning ball

1389. around a ball of fire,

1390. the breath that He's given you,

1391. you use that to deny Him,

1392. to live as if you've

  1393. worked it out yourself,

  1394. as if this life

  1395. is all about you?

1396. Well, let me tell you

  1397. what I've discovered

  1398. about God

1399. through His Word, the Bible.

  1400. I've discovered

1401. that God is not just

  1402. the creator,

  1403. but He's also

  1404. the loving Savior.

1405. And He's come into this world

1406. in the person of the Son

  1407. to defeat our ignorance

  1408. and unbelief,

1409. but not with a sword

  1410. or a gun,

1411. but by dying in our place

  1412. and bearing our judgment

1413. and rising to new resurrection life.

  1414. So that now,

  1415. through the Son,

1416. you and I get to live life

  1417. for God's glory.

1418. The glory not only of a creator,

  1419. but of a lover.

1420. So that God gets glory

  1421. and we get joy.

  1422. A joy that stretches

1423. through the ups and downs

  1424. of life

  1425. and into resurrection,

  1426. eternal life

1427. that the Son of God

  1428. has started already.

1429. Doesn't that sound pretty good?

1430. That's the glory of God.

  1431. That's what calls people

  1432. to Himself,

1433. to be a chosen people,

  1434. a holy nation,

  1435. a royal priesthood,

  1436. His special possession,

  1437. who live their lives

  1438. to declare His praises.

1439. Let me close in prayer.

  1440. Let's just take a moment.

  1441. You can think through

  1442. and ponder on

1443. the wonder of what God

  1444. has done for us

  1445. that we might

  1446. declare His praises together.

  1447. Heavenly Father,

1448. we thank you so much

1449. that you are passionately committed

  1450. to your own glory

1451. and that that's the right thing

  1452. for you to be.

  1453. It's the right way

  1454. for you to be.

  1455. It's the right thing

  1456. for us to acknowledge

  1457. that you are glorious

  1458. and wonderful.

  1459. And we pray, please,

1460. that as a church family

  1461. we might be leaky

1462. in our worship of you,

1463. that it might spill out of us

1464. into the people around us

1465. wherever you put us tomorrow,

1466. that people might hear from us

1467. the good news of the Lord Jesus

1468. because it's just spilling out

1469. from us at every turn.

1470. So you pray, please, Lord,

1471. that you would do this work

  1472. in our hearts

1473. for the sake of your name

  1474. and for the good

1475. of the lost around us

1476. that they might hear of Jesus

1477. and come and trust in Him

  1478. for themselves.

1479. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1480. Amen.

  1481. Amen.

  1482. Amen.
