  1. It's 2 Corinthians 11, verse 30, and we go on to 12, chapter 12 and verse 10.

    2 Corinthians 11:30

  2. If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

  3. The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is to be praised forever, knows that I am not lying.

  4. In Damascus, the governor under King Arthas had the city of Damascus gathered in order to arrest me,

  5. but I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall and slipped through his hands.

  6. I must go on boasting.

  7. Although there is nothing to be gained, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord.

  8. I know a man in Christ who 14 years ago was caught up to the third heaven.

  9. Whether it was in the body or out of the body, I do not know.

  10. God knows.

  11. And I know that this man, whether in the body or part from the body, I do not know, but God knows,

  12. was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell.

  13. I will boast about a man like that, but I will not boast about myself except about my weaknesses.

  14. Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool because I would be speaking the truth.

  15. But I refrain so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say,

  16. or because of these surpassingly great revelations.

  17. Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh,

  18. a messenger of Satan, to torment me.

  19. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.

  20. But he said to me,

  21. My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

  22. Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

  23. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties.

  24. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

  25. Thanks, Lucia. That's great.

  26. I don't know whether you saw in the news this week the Lionesses returning to the UK after losing the Women's World Cup final.

  27. Did you see that?

  28. They came back to the airport, and a small group of people were there to greet them,

  29. but they didn't get to see any of them because they skulked out of a back exit of the airport,

  30. so that they didn't have to meet the crowds.

  31. It's not really hard, I suppose, to see why they did it, is it?

  32. If they'd won, of course, they would have walked through the airport holding the trophy high,

  33. and everyone would have been cheering and celebrating.

  34. But they didn't win.

  35. They lost.

  36. And while we love success, we hate weakness, don't we, and failure.

  37. We're embarrassed for losers.

  38. And it's not just the England women's football team, either, is it?

  39. It works for us personally, too, doesn't it?

  40. You know, I am very proud of the A that I got in A-level general studies.

  41. I'm happy to talk to you about it, that general studies is a proper A-level, even if you don't think so.

  42. And I am slightly embarrassed of the grade that I got in my geography, and I will avoid talking to you about that.

  43. Or I will happily tell you that I passed my driving test on the very first attempt,

  44. but I won't tell you that I've never passed a single music exam.

  45. I'll tell you that I played cricket for the school and be very proud about that,

  46. but I will not tell you that on one trial for another sport,

  47. I was told, Palferman, you'll be never good enough to play for us.

  48. I'm happy to post beautiful photos of my family on social media,

  49. but I won't share that we don't always get on,

  50. and that sometimes voices are raised, doors slam, tempers frayed,

  51. and that's not everybody else in the family, that's just me.

  52. You see, the point is, isn't it, we love strength and we hate weakness.

  53. And in church life, it's just exactly the same as that.

  54. So in Corinth, they loved a group called the Super Apostles.

  55. These guys were the impressive public speakers.

  56. These were the ones who would have had a blue tick on their Instagram account

  57. and monetized YouTube channels.

  58. They had nice clothes, they had funny stories,

  59. they had big crowds every time they preached.

  60. They were always talking about how impressive their Christian lives were,

  61. how amazing their spiritual experiences were.

  62. They were talking about the blessings that had come their way,

  63. the good life that was theirs because Christ loves a winner,

  64. and they despised Paul.

  65. They pitied him, really.

  66. Paul was apparently unimpressive physically.

  67. He was probably short.

  68. He didn't wear fine clothes.

  69. He never took money.

  70. They loved speakers who took money from them,

  71. which I know is weird to us,

  72. but it was a sign then that the speaker was important if he took your money,

  73. and Paul always refused to take money.

  74. He didn't speak in the rhetoric that the Greeks loved so much,

  75. and while he wrote impressive letters,

  76. the word was that in person he was a lot more disappointing than his letters.

  77. But here's our point for this morning.

  78. What we'll find in 2 Corinthians chapter 12

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  79. is that the Corinthians were wrong to think in that way about Paul.

  80. They were wrong because the big truth of the universe

  81. is not that God loves success in the way that we do,

  82. but it's this, that weakness, not strength,

  83. is the qualification for Christ's power.

  84. Weakness, not strength, is the qualification for Christ's power.

  85. In other words, our thinking on this is completely upside down.

  86. It's back to front.

  87. Amazing stories about spiritual experiences,

  88. huge followings, World Cup trophies, lots of money,

  89. even an A grade in general studies,

  90. are neither essential signs of God's blessing

  91. nor qualifications for God's blessing.

  92. Instead, what we find is that it's an awareness of our weakness,

  93. our unworthiness, our failures,

  94. that is a sign of God's blessing and a qualification for it.

  95. Now, let me try and show you that from the passage if I can.

  96. So look down in your Bibles, chapter 11, verse 30.

  97. What does Paul start with?

  98. He says, if I must boast, he says,

  99. listen, if I'm going to engage in the kind of language

  100. that the super apostles are so engaged with,

  101. if I'm going to join in with the boasting,

  102. I will boast, he says, of things that show my weakness.

  103. He says, turning it on its head,

  104. boasting not in strength but in weaknesses.

  105. And he immediately gives us an example.

  106. Look down at verse 32.

  107. In Damascus, the governor under King Aratas

  108. had the city of the Damasians guarded in order to arrest me,

  109. but I was lowered in a basket from a window in the wall

  110. and slipped through his hands.

  111. Here he goes, I'm going to boast for you.

  112. Let me tell you of a great spiritual experience I've had.

  113. I ran away, he said.

  114. I was so scared, I ran away.

  115. It's a sign of weakness, isn't it?

  116. I was hidden in a basket, dropped from the wall and legged it.

  117. That doesn't sound impressive, does it?

  118. But that's my point, says Paul.

  119. Let me tell you about my weakness, he says.

  120. Then in chapter 12, he carries on.

  121. But now he talks as if he's talking about somebody else, doesn't he?

  122. He is really talking about himself here,

  123. but he talks in the third person about himself

  124. to make this same point about boasting.

  125. See, it's not that Paul hasn't had great spiritual experiences.

  126. He has had them, he's just not talking about them.

  127. See, he says that he knows a man who was, which was him,

  128. caught up into the third heaven, verse 2.

  129. The third heaven being where God is.

  130. The first heaven being the atmosphere,

  131. the second being space, and the third where God dwells.

  132. Not that Paul's teaching science, it's just a turn of phrase.

  133. But the point is, says Paul,

  134. I've had some incredible spiritual experiences,

  135. but I'm not going to boast about them.

  136. In fact, I won't even speak about them.

  137. I may not tell them, verse 4.

  138. Instead, when I tell them,

  139. I'm going to tell you them in the third person,

  140. just to make this point.

  141. Because if I'm going to talk in the first person,

  142. verse 5, I'm going to boast about my weakness.

  143. And why does he do that?

  144. Well, because, verse 6,

  145. even though these stories of great experiences are true,

  146. still, verse 6, what do you say?

  147. I refrain so that no one will think more of me

  148. than is warranted by what I do or say.

  149. It's just worth pausing on that, isn't it?

  150. Just to make sure we know what Paul is saying.

  151. I refrain so that no one will think more of me

  152. than is warranted by what I do or say.

  153. Paul is really concerned here, isn't he?

  154. That his reputation amongst the Corinthians

  155. is based on his words and his actions.

  156. Not an impression of him that they've had

  157. from the stories that he tells

  158. about experiences that he's had,

  159. whether they have no idea whether those are true or not.

  160. If Paul were writing today, he'd say,

  161. listen, I want you to know the real me.

  162. I want you to know the real me.

  163. Not the Instagram me, but the real me.

  164. I want you to know me not by a projection

  165. that I've put out there

  166. of what I'd like you to think about me,

  167. not by a bunch of edited photos

  168. of a tidy flat or a sunset holiday

  169. or a zen moment in a caravan by a Swiss mountain.

  170. No, I want you to know me

  171. by what I actually say and do.

  172. My life is not the fake life of an influencer,

  173. the half million followers,

  174. L'Oreal sponsored super apostle.

  175. That's not me.

  176. I'm real, says Paul, not fake.

  177. Look at what I've done.

  178. Listen to what I say.

  179. I'm not interested in projecting

  180. an impression outside of my words and actions.

  181. Now, let me just say here in passing,

  182. our world is crying out for that kind of honesty, isn't it?

  183. We are, I think, becoming more and more fed up

  184. with the fake and the pretend.

  185. You know, the celebrity who pretends

  186. to be happily married whilst it turns out

  187. paying to have sex with somebody else.

  188. It makes us all the more cynical all the time.

  189. And Paul says, listen, that's not me.

  190. You know, if you want to know my weaknesses,

  191. says Paul, you want to know about my weaknesses?

  192. Just listen to me because I'll tell you them.

  193. You want to know what I'm like?

  194. I'll tell you.

  195. You want to know what I do?

  196. Watch me.

  197. You'll see it.

  198. If you look down again at the passage,

  199. you'll see that this realness of Paul,

  200. if you like, is not something

  201. that he's just arrived at himself.

  202. It has, in a sense, been imposed on him by God.

  203. Probably better to say taught to him by God.

  204. Look at verse seven.

  205. Let me read verses seven and eight to you again.

  206. Paul writes this,

  207. therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited,

  208. conceited, literally, I guess,

  209. it would be kind of boasting

  210. in the way the super apostles boast.

  211. Therefore, in order to keep me

  212. from becoming conceited,

  213. I was given a thorn in my flesh,

  214. a messenger of Satan to torment me.

  215. Three times I pleaded with the Lord

  216. to take it away from me.

  217. Now, we have no idea, really,

  218. what this thorn in the flesh was for Paul.

  219. It could have been a physical illness.

  220. It might even have been a difficult relationship,

  221. perhaps even a difficult relationship

  222. with the Corinthian church themselves.

  223. But what we do know is that it is something wicked

  224. and difficult, a thorn that's a messenger of Satan,

  225. tormenting him, he says.

  226. So much so that he's longed to get rid of it

  227. and has prayed, and not just prayed,

  228. but pleaded with the Lord to take it away.

  229. But God says no.

  230. God says no.

  231. Which means, and I think this blows the categories

  232. of lots of people's understanding

  233. of the Christian life.

  234. It means, doesn't it, that Paul has been

  235. deliberately made weak by God.

  236. God intends Paul to be weak,

  237. allowing Satan to torment him with a thorn.

  238. And why?

  239. Why would God do such a thing to his servant?

  240. Is God cruel?

  241. Does he love hurting people?

  242. Well, no.

  243. Instead, it's so that Paul might understand

  244. and know the truth of Jesus' words in verse nine,

  245. when Jesus says,

  246. my grace is sufficient for you,

  247. for my power is made perfect in weakness.

  248. In other words, known, felt, expressed,

  249. even tormenting weakness,

  250. is the canvas for God's power, for Christ's power.

  251. It's the foundation of Christ's work in Paul's life.

  252. So much so that Paul concludes in verse nine,

  253. therefore, I will boast all the more gladly

  254. about my weaknesses,

  255. so that Christ's power may rest on me.

  256. That is why, for Christ's sake,

  257. literally, I delight in,

  258. I think the ESV puts, I'm content with.

  259. It's not just I put up with.

  260. It's actually I am happy with.

  261. I am delighting in weaknesses,

  262. in insults, in hardships,

  263. in persecutions, in difficulties,

  264. for when I am weak, then I am strong.

  265. See, here's our point for this morning.

  266. Weakness, not strength,

  267. is the qualification for Christ's power.

  268. And because that's true,

  269. God will even allow Satan

  270. to attack his servants,

  271. to weaken them,

  272. so that he can teach it to them,

  273. and they can experience this power.

  274. This is how one commentary

  275. summarizes this passage.

  276. It says this,

  277. some people tell us

  278. that as Christians,

  279. we have a right to be healed,

  280. and that if we're sick and not healed,

  281. there must be something

  282. spiritually wrong with us.

  283. It is not so.

  284. There is an expectation of suffering

  285. in the Christian life.

  286. Of course, we pray for relief,

  287. but if our prayers are persistently declined,

  288. then we must eventually conclude

  289. that God is saying to us,

  290. you are more useful to me

  291. with suffering than without it.

  292. Now, I want to come on

  293. and say some things

  294. about how this applies to us

  295. as a church,

  296. but before I do that,

  297. I want to try and be

  298. a good pastor this morning to you

  299. if you're suffering.

  300. I know that for a number of you here,

  301. and especially for those,

  302. I guess, following on Zoom

  303. who are stuck at home this morning,

  304. life is particularly tough.

  305. I was talking to one church member this week

  306. who was just telling me

  307. of persistent, unexplained,

  308. physical pain,

  309. a real thorn in the flesh.

  310. Now, listen,

  311. nothing in this passage this morning

  312. is trying to minimize

  313. the reality of that pain.

  314. This isn't victory Christianity,

  315. you know,

  316. where we pretend that nothing hurts.

  317. You know,

  318. oh, I've lost an arm.

  319. Praise the Lord,

  320. I've got another one.

  321. Oh, I've lost that too.

  322. Praise the Lord,

  323. I've got two legs.

  324. No, it's not that, is it?

  325. No, thorns here are satanic tormentors,

  326. right?

  327. They are painful and hard and difficult,

  328. and the pain is real,

  329. and it's to be expressed.

  330. Rather, here, I think,

  331. is the point

  332. that as well as looking for relief

  333. from the suffering,

  334. we do look for relief,

  335. don't we,

  336. from our suffering.

  337. That's natural,

  338. and we should do it.

  339. We look for relief from our suffering,

  340. but God may or may not grant us

  341. the relief that we look for.

  342. What we should also look for

  343. at the same time

  344. is for grace in the suffering

  345. and power to face the suffering.

  346. And we know, don't we,

  347. that God will provide us with that.

  348. In other words,

  349. it's often in our moments

  350. of greatest pain

  351. that we know most clearly

  352. the love and power of Christ.

  353. It's when others betray us

  354. and let us down

  355. that we know most clearly

  356. the faithfulness

  357. of the Lord Jesus.

  358. It's at moments

  359. of great weakness

  360. when we rely most heavily

  361. on God's grace,

  362. which makes us stronger

  363. than we ever were

  364. without the suffering.

  365. You know,

  366. you might be suffering

  367. this morning

  368. in whatever way

  369. that might be.

  370. It might be physically,

  371. it might be emotionally,

  372. it might just be

  373. a circumstance in your life.

  374. Listen, don't be afraid

  375. to join Paul

  376. in crying out to God

  377. and pleading with him,

  378. please take this away from me.

  379. But know that God's purpose

  380. is not always

  381. to bring relief

  382. from suffering,

  383. but it is always

  384. to provide grace

  385. and power

  386. in suffering.

  387. Because,

  388. why?

  389. Weakness,

  390. not strength,

  391. is the qualification

  392. for Christ's power.

  393. Now,

  394. if that's something

  395. that you're particularly

  396. struggling with,

  397. please come and talk to me

  398. at the end.

  399. I'd love to talk with you

  400. and pray with you

  401. more about that.

  402. But let's think about

  403. some ways that this might

  404. apply to our church corporately.

  405. I've got three brief points

  406. as we finish off this morning.

  407. First one is this,

  408. when God is at work,

  409. we should expect

  410. to be more,

  411. not less,

  412. more,

  413. not less,

  414. conscious of our weakness.

  415. I wonder if it's maybe

  416. just me that thinks like this,

  417. but I think it's been

  418. my assumption

  419. for most of my Christian life

  420. that the more you grow

  421. as a Christian,

  422. the stronger you will feel.

  423. Right?

  424. I think I've assumed

  425. in my Christian life

  426. that the mature Christian

  427. must spend most of their time

  428. feeling sorted.

  429. You know,

  430. they might have a battle

  431. with sin,

  432. but it's a very low-level battle

  433. that they win every day

  434. and every moment.

  435. They're successful all the time.

  436. You know,

  437. they're not fighting

  438. for godly thoughts

  439. because their brain

  440. somehow has become hardwired

  441. to think in a godly way.

  442. You know,

  443. they don't doubt,

  444. they don't worry,

  445. they don't feel anxious

  446. in the face of death.

  447. They're victorious

  448. all the time.

  449. But then you read passages

  450. like this one

  451. and you think,

  452. well,

  453. wait a minute,

  454. that's perhaps not right.

  455. Maybe the truth is

  456. if Paul is expressing

  457. Christian growth here

  458. that as I grow as a Christian,

  459. I won't begin to feel stronger,

  460. but I'll begin to feel weaker

  461. even as I grow as a Christian.

  462. The more I grow,

  463. the more I'll recognize

  464. the limitations

  465. on my understanding.

  466. The more I grow as a Christian,

  467. the more I'll know

  468. I don't know.

  469. The more I grow as a Christian,

  470. the more I'll know

  471. I can't be trusted in myself.

  472. The more I grow as a Christian,

  473. the more I know

  474. that my desires

  475. and my longings

  476. given half the chance

  477. would kill my Christian life

  478. and destroy my witness.

  479. That's certainly

  480. Paul's experience,

  481. isn't it?

  482. It will be ours too,

  483. individually and corporately.

  484. So individually,

  485. I really hope and pray

  486. that church revitalization

  487. means a personal revitalization

  488. for all of us

  489. in our Christian lives.

  490. But we mustn't expect

  491. that to come

  492. by making us more self-reliant

  493. and more impressive

  494. to those around us.

  495. The opposite will be true.

  496. And for us as a church,

  497. if our church grows

  498. in strength and maturity,

  499. we can expect

  500. that it will be marked

  501. by a collective appreciation

  502. of our weakness,

  503. not our strength.

  504. Are you ready for that?

  505. In fact,

  506. so essential

  507. is that partnership

  508. that we can expect God

  509. to put things

  510. in our way

  511. as a church

  512. that will make us

  513. know our weakness

  514. and feel it more acutely.

  515. Whether that be

  516. financial hardship,

  517. illness,

  518. trouble,

  519. a leaking roof,

  520. false accusations,

  521. whatever it might be.

  522. Because the road up

  523. is the road down,

  524. isn't it?

  525. And so like Paul,

  526. we're to learn

  527. to delight in those things.

  528. I don't like telling

  529. too many stories

  530. about Egberth,

  531. which is where we were before.

  532. I think sometimes

  533. pastors who bang on

  534. where they were before

  535. can give a wrong impression.

  536. But if you'll forgive me

  537. for one story,

  538. let me tell you one now.

  539. I think it makes

  540. this point really well.

  541. Two years before COVID,

  542. we moved our church

  543. into a local school.

  544. The local school

  545. had a big car park

  546. and some outdoor space

  547. for the kids

  548. to run around in,

  549. more rooms for Sunday school.

  550. So it seemed to make

  551. a lot of sense

  552. for us to move

  553. from the smaller building

  554. that we're in

  555. to this bigger school building.

  556. What became very clear

  557. as we started meeting there

  558. was that the neighbours

  559. hated us.

  560. They were cross

  561. with the school

  562. for allowing people

  563. to use the building

  564. on a Sunday

  565. because it made extra traffic

  566. on their street

  567. and people walking

  568. down their road

  569. and they didn't like that.

  570. The fact that we were

  571. a church

  572. made it even more difficult

  573. because they hated

  574. the idea of a church

  575. meeting in the local school.

  576. So on a Sunday morning,

  577. we would be greeted

  578. coming to church

  579. by protesters,

  580. people with placards,

  581. some of them

  582. with my name on them,

  583. telling people

  584. on their way into church,

  585. your pastor's a liar,

  586. don't trust him.

  587. They parked their cars

  588. so that we couldn't

  589. quite get down the street.

  590. You had to go

  591. really, really slowly.

  592. On a particularly bad week,

  593. the local police

  594. had to escort me

  595. off the premises

  596. because they were

  597. waiting outside

  598. to hassle me

  599. on my way out.

  600. And all of a sudden,

  601. our church,

  602. which we thought

  603. everybody loved,

  604. we realized

  605. that we were hated.

  606. We weren't strong.

  607. We're weak.

  608. We're not loved.

  609. We're disliked.

  610. We're not influential.

  611. We're disregarded.

  612. And what was

  613. the effect of that?

  614. What do you think

  615. the effect of that

  616. was on our local church?

  617. Well, let me tell you this.

  618. Amazingly,

  619. more people were converted

  620. in the two years

  621. that we were meeting

  622. in that school

  623. than any other time

  624. in my pastorate there.

  625. A bunch of students

  626. turned up

  627. from one of the local universities

  628. and two of them

  629. were just converted

  630. just by sitting

  631. and listening to the preaching

  632. week in, week out.

  633. Another guy came to me

  634. in tears

  635. after I preached

  636. a not very good sermon,

  637. I don't think,

  638. on Matthew 26.

  639. He came to me

  640. after the sermon,

  641. tears flowing down his face.

  642. He'd just become a Christian.

  643. It's weird, isn't it?

  644. It turns out

  645. that it's not the strength

  646. of the church

  647. but the weakness

  648. of the church.

  649. as we see

  650. our corporate reliance

  651. on Christ

  652. and leaning on him

  653. so this reversal happens.

  654. Are you ready for that?

  655. Secondly,

  656. success won't be measured

  657. on a graph.

  658. This, of course,

  659. is how all success

  660. is normally measured.

  661. You have a graph

  662. of growth, don't you?

  663. Growth in money,

  664. growth in customers,

  665. growth in profit.

  666. But in church life

  667. it's not quite the same.

  668. Of course,

  669. we do long,

  670. don't we,

  671. for this building

  672. to become that rammed

  673. full of people

  674. who've just come

  675. to know the Lord Jesus.

  676. I'm praying for that.

  677. I'm praying that we have

  678. to open the balcony soon,

  679. that Jeff has to move

  680. his ladders, right?

  681. I long for that.

  682. That's what we're praying for.

  683. But it might not happen.

  684. We might be successful

  685. and that not happen

  686. because success

  687. in 2 Corinthians 12,

  688. success for us

  689. as a church

  690. is not so much

  691. growth in numbers

  692. as it is growth

  693. in reliance

  694. and confidence

  695. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  696. Let me try and explain

  697. why that's the case.

  698. Let me ask you a question.

  699. Why do you think it is

  700. that Paul thinks

  701. human weakness

  702. experiences Christ's power?

  703. Think about that.

  704. Why does Paul think

  705. human weakness

  706. experiences Christ's power?

  707. Now, there might be

  708. a lot of reasons,

  709. mightn't there?

  710. Perhaps he thinks

  711. that weakness

  712. in some sense

  713. is a key

  714. that unlocks

  715. Christ's power.

  716. I don't think

  717. that's quite right.

  718. I mean, the Bible

  719. does say that God

  720. opposes the proud

  721. but gives grace

  722. to the humble

  723. but it's not

  724. that their humility

  725. itself is the key

  726. that unlocks the door,

  727. is it?

  728. I don't think

  729. it's that at all.

  730. It might be

  731. that human weakness

  732. makes us especially

  733. reliant on Christ's strength,

  734. you know,

  735. that we know

  736. we can't do

  737. so we rely on Christ.

  738. And I think that's true

  739. to a sense, isn't it?

  740. But there's something

  741. more to it than that.

  742. Why is it that

  743. human weakness

  744. is the key

  745. to experiencing

  746. Christ's power?

  747. What is it?

  748. Well, I think it's this.

  749. It's because it is

  750. in human weakness

  751. that Christ saves

  752. his people.

  753. This is the story

  754. of the Bible, right?

  755. It is God the Father,

  756. Son and Spirit

  757. sending the Son

  758. into the world

  759. that they made

  760. in order to save

  761. a people for himself.

  762. How does the Son say

  763. as he comes

  764. into the world

  765. in which he's made?

  766. He doesn't come

  767. in a blaze of glory,

  768. does he?

  769. on a great chariot

  770. without riders.

  771. No, he comes

  772. as a baby

  773. into a manger,

  774. life hanging

  775. in the balance.

  776. And how does he save?

  777. Well, faces terrible

  778. opposition before

  779. dying on a cross

  780. as a sacrifice

  781. for our sins

  782. so that we can be forgiven.

  783. there hanging naked

  784. on the cross,

  785. the power of God

  786. takes the weakness

  787. of humanity

  788. and conquers humanity's

  789. greatest opponents,

  790. death, sin, the devil.

  791. Of course, Paul rejoices

  792. in weakness.

  793. Of course, we can't measure

  794. success on a graph

  795. because weakness

  796. is essentially

  797. Christ-likeness,

  798. isn't it?

  799. And weakness

  800. where we really appreciate

  801. the power of God

  802. because when we come

  803. to the point

  804. that we can't do anything,

  805. when we come to the point

  806. of knowing,

  807. I'm so weak,

  808. I can't do anything,

  809. we've arrived at the point

  810. at which Christ

  811. has done everything.

  812. Do you understand?

  813. Christ takes human weakness

  814. at which point

  815. we are right

  816. at the very end

  817. of ourselves

  818. and unable to do anything

  819. to save ourselves

  820. or help ourselves.

  821. Christ is at that

  822. very same point

  823. and is able to conquer

  824. everything that stands

  825. in our way.

  826. Isn't that incredible?

  827. And so, of course,

  828. human weakness

  829. is the key

  830. to experiencing

  831. the power of Christ

  832. because that's where

  833. the power of Christ

  834. is met.

  835. Listen, this morning,

  836. if you've never

  837. thought about that,

  838. if you've never understood

  839. Christ's work in that way,

  840. if you thought

  841. that being a Christian

  842. is about taking out

  843. a spiritual insurance policy

  844. that you cash in

  845. when you die,

  846. or maybe if you thought

  847. being a Christian

  848. is about having

  849. lots of answers

  850. to the big questions

  851. in life

  852. so that you're

  853. kind of smart,

  854. well, let me invite

  855. you to meet Jesus

  856. for the first time

  857. off the pages

  858. of the Bible.

  859. He comes to you

  860. in the weakness

  861. of human flesh,

  862. in the frailty

  863. of a human body,

  864. blood stained

  865. and sacrificed

  866. for our sin,

  867. and he says,

  868. listen,

  869. in my weakness

  870. darkness.

  871. I have the power

  872. to rescue

  873. and save you

  874. for all eternity.

  875. Turn to me.

  876. Come to me.

  877. Finally then,

  878. and more briefly,

  879. we will avoid

  880. being over-spiritual.

  881. Now, I want to

  882. be careful

  883. how I put this,

  884. but I think

  885. there's an important sense

  886. in which we must

  887. follow Paul's example

  888. in the way

  889. that we speak.

  890. Paul is very conscious

  891. that he doesn't want

  892. people to think

  893. of him in a certain way

  894. because of what he says

  895. about his own

  896. personal spiritual experiences.

  897. He's very,

  898. very careful

  899. not to market himself.

  900. He really doesn't

  901. want to appear

  902. as someone

  903. who he's not.

  904. He doesn't want

  905. people thinking

  906. that he is more

  907. than he really is.

  908. He wants his words

  909. and his actions

  910. to speak for themselves,

  911. not to build up

  912. an impression of him,

  913. not spiritually

  914. talking himself up,

  915. but being real

  916. and honest.

  917. And so for us,

  918. I think it's possible,

  919. isn't it,

  920. for us in church life,

  921. I'm sure you've met

  922. people like this

  923. who talk a really

  924. good game.

  925. This is certainly

  926. the thing,

  927. I think in church

  928. youth groups

  929. it can be the case,

  930. can't it?

  931. You know,

  932. young people

  933. are having their

  934. hands in the air

  935. while they're singing,

  936. having an awesome

  937. spiritual experience.

  938. They have all the answers,

  939. the right answers

  940. in the Bible study,

  941. but then really

  942. as they walk out there

  943. they know that's not

  944. really the Christian life

  945. that they're living.

  946. Gives the impression

  947. of looking like

  948. a serious Christian,

  949. but not really.

  950. It's not just young

  951. people,

  952. is it?

  953. Leaders will tell you

  954. when they,

  955. oh,

  956. this is what I was

  957. reading in my

  958. devotions this morning

  959. for a couple of hours.

  960. What they won't tell you

  961. is that they struggle

  962. to have them.

  963. People will tell you

  964. that they're praying

  965. for you,

  966. but they won't never

  967. tell you is that

  968. they forgot to pray

  969. for you.

  970. People will give you

  971. spiritual sounding advice

  972. that they blatantly

  973. ignore for themselves.

  974. so much so that

  975. our spiritual lives

  976. can take on

  977. a sort of unreality

  978. that we step

  979. through those doors

  980. at the back of church

  981. and we pretend

  982. to be someone

  983. we're not really

  984. the rest of the week.

  985. We mustn't be like that

  986. because actually

  987. it's our weakness

  988. and our struggles

  989. where we meet Christ.

  990. I worked for a few years

  991. for a church

  992. which was in a city centre

  993. with lots of students.

  994. We had a visit

  995. from an American pastor

  996. who had got to know

  997. one of the other pastors

  998. of the church

  999. at a conference

1000. and said come to visit.

  1001. I spoke to him

  1002. after the morning service

  1003. and said oh

1004. what did you think to that?

1005. And he looked at me

  1006. a bit puzzled

  1007. and he goes well

1008. the church isn't as big

1009. as I thought it was.

  1010. What turned out

  1011. to be the case

1012. is that the other pastor

  1013. had been talking up

  1014. the church so much

  1015. this guy thought

1016. it was quite an amazing place

  1017. and then came

  1018. and the reality

  1019. was quite a lot

  1020. more disappointing.

  1021. Now that's a shame

  1022. isn't it?

  1023. Because the truth is

1024. we don't want to give

  1025. an impression

  1026. that's better

1027. than the reality do we?

1028. We want to be real

  1029. and honest

  1030. and honest about

  1031. our weaknesses

  1032. because we just don't

1033. need to be like that.

  1034. It's not just that

1035. we should not be like that

  1036. we don't need

1037. to be like that do we?

  1038. It's not just that

  1039. we should not create

  1040. a false impression

  1041. it's that we don't need to.

  1042. Why?

  1043. Because the gospel

  1044. has liberated you

1045. from all of that nonsense.

1046. The gospel of Christ's power

  1047. and human weakness

  1048. has liberated us

  1049. from the need

  1050. to always give

  1051. a good impression.

  1052. Okay you've found

  1053. another way

  1054. that we're weak

  1055. as a church.

  1056. Praise the Lord.

  1057. Christ works

  1058. in weak churches.

  1059. The gospel

  1060. is great news

  1061. for weak people.

  1062. We don't need

  1063. to desire

  1064. to appear

  1065. more holy

  1066. than we really are

  1067. because Christ's power

  1068. in my weakness

  1069. means that perhaps

1070. for the very first time

  1071. you and I

  1072. can be real people

  1073. really honest

  1074. with one another.

1075. This is not a performance

  1076. this morning.

  1077. We're not putting on a show.

  1078. This is us

1079. with all of our weakness

  1080. not banging on

1081. about how great we are

  1082. but instead

1083. knowing with the apostle Paul

  1084. that it's not strength

  1085. but weakness

  1086. that qualifies us

1087. for the power of Christ.

  1088. That is why

  1089. for Christ's sake

  1090. we delight in weakness

  1091. in insults

  1092. in hardships

  1093. in persecutions

  1094. in difficulties

1095. for when we are weak

  1096. then we are strong.

  1097. Let me pray.

  1098. Heavenly Father

  1099. we want to ask

  1100. for your forgiveness

  1101. for where we've

  1102. pretended

  1103. to be stronger

  1104. than we really are.

  1105. We acknowledge

  1106. Lord

  1107. that we've never

  1108. fooled you

  1109. for a moment.

  1110. We might have

  1111. tricked others

  1112. but we've never

  1113. fooled you.

  1114. So Lord

  1115. we come to you

  1116. this morning

1117. in all of our weakness

  1118. whether that's

  1119. because of

  1120. physical suffering

  1121. that we're facing

  1122. or difficulties

  1123. or hardships.

  1124. We come to you

1125. in all of that weakness

1126. saying that we find it

  1127. very hard to say

1128. that we delight in it

1129. but we want to know

  1130. the power of Christ

  1131. resting on us.

  1132. We want to know

1133. that when we are weak

  1134. we are strong

  1135. because Christ

  1136. meets us

  1137. in our weakness

  1138. because in great

  1139. human weakness

1140. he died on the cross

  1141. with the power

  1142. to save us

1143. from all of our sin

  1144. and liberate us

  1145. for a world remade

  1146. by your power

  1147. and your glory

  1148. for all eternity.

  1149. So we say together

  1150. come Lord Jesus

1151. and pray in his name.

  1152. Amen.

  1153. Amen.

  1154. Amen.
