  1. And the rest of you, you can grab your Bibles and turn to 2 Samuel chapter 7 or keep it open in front of you.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  2. And Clifford is going to come and read for us.

  3. Let's read and hear God's word as is found in 2 Samuel chapter 7, reading from verses 1 to 17.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  4. After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him,

  5. he said to Nathan the prophet, here am I living in the house of Cedar while the ark of God remains in the tent.

  6. Nathan replied to the king, whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it for the Lord is with you.

  7. But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan saying, go and tell my servant David, this is what the Lord says.

  8. Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?

  9. I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt to this day.

  10. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.

  11. Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any one of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people,

  12. Israel, why have you not built me a house of cedar?

  13. Now then, tell my servant David, this is what the Lord Almighty says.

  14. I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.

  15. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you.

  16. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest of men on earth.

  17. And I will provide a place for my people Israel, and will plant them so that they can have a home for their own,

  18. and no longer be disturbed.

  19. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning,

  20. and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel.

  21. I will also give you rest from all your enemies.

  22. The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself would establish a house for you.

  23. When your days are over and your rest with your ancestors,

  24. I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood,

  25. and I will establish his kingdom.

  26. He is the one who will build a house for my name,

  27. and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

  28. I will be his father, and he will be my son.

  29. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men,

  30. with floggings inflicted by human hands.

  31. But my love will never be taken away from him,

  32. as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.

  33. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me.

  34. Your throne will be established forever.

  35. Nathan reported to David all the words of the entire revelation.

  36. Amen.

  37. Amen.

  38. Thank you, Clifford.

  39. Well, do keep that passage open in front of you,

  40. and we're going to try and work our way through it together.

  41. I think if you want to know what 2 Samuel chapter 7 is about,

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  42. then what you really need to look for is the word house.

  43. It comes eight times in our passage.

  44. So in verse 1, you find that David is living in his house,

  45. translated palace by the NIV.

  46. A house that we're told in verse 2 that is made of cedar,

  47. which is very fancy building material.

  48. And while David lives in his cedar palace,

  49. the ark of God dwells in it.

  50. And this is the shock, because the word is not house.

  51. The word is tent, tent.

  52. David doesn't think that's right,

  53. so he plans to build a permanent house for God in verse 5.

  54. But God replies to him through Nathan the prophet

  55. and says that God has never lived in a house in verse 6.

  56. He's never asked anyone to build him a house of cedar in verse 7.

  57. And then in an amazing reversal, God says to David,

  58. that David who has said, I'm going to build you a house,

  59. God says to him, no, I will build you a house.

  60. A house not made of cedar, but a house built in offspring.

  61. Your offspring who, verse 13, will, as it happens,

  62. build my house, a temple.

  63. But still that house, that temple,

  64. will be nothing compared to the house that God builds,

  65. which verse 16 will last forever.

  66. You get it?

  67. House, house, house, house, house, house.

  68. That is a brief summary of 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  69. Now there's loads of detail in here,

  70. and I think in some ways,

  71. 2 Samuel chapter 7 is one of the most important chapters

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  72. in the story of David,

  73. as he gets this covenant promise

  74. about his ancestors to come.

  75. But I want instead just to try and give us

  76. essentially a sort of an overview

  77. of what's going on here.

  78. David says, from his house,

  79. I will build the Lord a house.

  80. God says, from his tent,

  81. I will build David an eternal house.

  82. Now let's get on with the first thing

  83. that I want you to notice, though,

  84. from this passage.

  85. It's this, God is free to do what he wants.

  86. God is free to do what he wants.

  87. Now, I know that's a really obvious thing

  88. for me to say to you.

  89. Of course, you understand, don't you,

  90. that God is free.

  91. What I mean by that is not that God

  92. doesn't cost you anything,

  93. not saying that,

  94. rather that God is free to act.

  95. God is the one who is free to do

  96. whatever he wills to do.

  97. Yeah, you understand that?

  98. In other words, history,

  99. the events of our time,

  100. the space in which we live,

  101. is literally his story.

  102. Not our story, not your story,

  103. not my story, not even David's story.

  104. History is his story.

  105. See this with me in the passage.

  106. God's first response to David's house building plan

  107. in verses six to seven is to remind David

  108. that he has been moving about in a tent

  109. ever since he was brought up by the people from Egypt.

  110. But notice all the eyes in the passage.

  111. God says,

  112. I brought up the Israelites out of Egypt.

  113. I have been moving from place to place in a tent.

  114. He goes on,

  115. I never said anything about a house building

  116. to any of the rulers or judges.

  117. I commanded to rule Israel.

  118. In other words, David, listen,

  119. what you need to understand, David,

  120. is that I am in a tent

  121. because I have chosen to be in a tent.

  122. Because the story of the story of God's people

  123. is my story, says God.

  124. It's the story of what I have done as I have acted.

  125. So much so that when I need a house,

  126. you can be sure that it will happen

  127. because I will make it happen.

  128. You see, David needs to understand that God is free.

  129. God is free to do what he wants.

  130. And David acts in response to the commands of God,

  131. not the other way around.

  132. David doesn't get to tell God what to do.

  133. God gets to tell David what he is doing.

  134. It gets underlined with some more eyes.

  135. Notice from verse eight, all the eyes there.

  136. I took you, he says,

  137. getting more personal,

  138. from the pasture to make you ruler over my people,

  139. verse eight.

  140. I have been with you wherever you've gone,

  141. verse nine,

  142. cutting off the enemies and winning victories.

  143. David, don't think that your personal story,

  144. not just the story of Israel,

  145. don't think that your personal story

  146. is the story of you, you, you.

  147. It's the story of God, God, God.

  148. God is free to act.

  149. He can do whatever he wants to do.

  150. The history is the story of what he does,

  151. which means significantly for David

  152. that he shouldn't think that he is capable

  153. of building a house for God,

  154. as if he could contain God

  155. or as if God needs him

  156. to put a roof over his head.

  157. David mustn't limit God like that.

  158. Now, let me just ask you

  159. just to think about that with me for a moment.

  160. It's a big idea.

  161. It's obvious and it's plain,

  162. but it is really significant.

  163. It should be plain to us

  164. that the real God

  165. does not do everything that we would do.

  166. God is surprising to us.

  167. He doesn't do everything that we would do

  168. and he doesn't do everything

  169. that we would want him to

  170. or expect him to

  171. because fundamentally God,

  172. the God of the universe,

  173. the God who made us,

  174. the triune God of Father, Son and Spirit

  175. is not subject to my plans,

  176. my rules, my expectations or yours.

  177. He is free to do what he wants to do.

  178. He's not threatened by our decisions

  179. or limited by our ideas.

  180. God is free above all overall,

  181. doing all things in accordance

  182. with the purpose of his will.

  183. And you and I really quickly forget that,

  184. don't we?

  185. We quickly question God's goodness

  186. or his wisdom

  187. when he doesn't do what we would do.

  188. Oh, wait a minute.

  189. Why have you done that?

  190. I wouldn't have done that.

  191. Are you still good, God?

  192. You know, David thinks that God should be

  193. not in a tent, but in a house

  194. and God doesn't agree.

  195. So he stays in the tent.

  196. Now, you and I might not be trying

  197. to build God a house,

  198. but we might try and contain him in other ways.

  199. Now, God, why haven't you not made it easier

  200. to be a Christian?

  201. You should make it easier

  202. to be a Christian, shouldn't you?

  203. Why have you permitted us

  204. to face the suffering that we face?

  205. Why don't you stop the godless side

  206. of Western culture

  207. away from Bible morality and values?

  208. Oh, God, why don't you let us

  209. get the freehold to our building more easily?

  210. Why don't you enlarge the size of our church?

  211. Why don't you give us better health,

  212. better looks, better mental health?

  213. But the truth is, the bottom line,

  214. before we even get to ask the why question,

  215. which is a fair question to ask,

  216. before we ask the why question,

  217. we must admit that God is free

  218. to do what he wants to do,

  219. free to do what he decides to do

  220. in the world,

  221. because that's what it means

  222. for God to be God.

  223. Now, that doesn't mean, does it,

  224. that tomorrow God to choose to be bad?

  225. That's not what we're saying.

  226. The Bible is really clear

  227. that God's freedom is in line

  228. with his nature,

  229. and his nature is goodness itself.

  230. Goodness is defined by the nature of God.

  231. So God is free to act in line

  232. with his nature at all times.

  233. God is the definition of good.

  234. But what it does mean

  235. is that the story of our lives,

  236. the story of history,

  237. is the freedom of God

  238. deciding what to do.

  239. Now, I think if we understand that,

  240. it should help us see

  241. that God is a lot bigger

  242. than we're inclined to think, right?

  243. At 2 Samuel 7,

  244. David is realizing

  245. that he is smaller

  246. and God is greater.

  247. That's what he's realizing.

  248. His plan to build a house

  249. comes to nothing

  250. because God is bigger

  251. and more free than David thought.

  252. And God's plan to build a house for David

  253. is what's going to happen,

  254. not the other way around.

  255. It's interesting.

  256. I think, obviously,

  257. David taught this lesson to Solomon.

  258. Solomon is David's son.

  259. Solomon is the guy

  260. who actually builds the temple.

  261. And when he builds the temple,

  262. he prays a prayer of dedication.

  263. And he's clearly learned this lesson

  264. from his father, David.

  265. So listen to what he prays

  266. when the temple is dedicated.

  267. He says this,

  268. But will God really dwell on earth?

  269. The heavens,

  270. even the highest heaven,

  271. cannot contain you.

  272. How much less this temple

  273. that I have built,

  274. this house that I have built.

  275. God is free.

  276. And we cannot contain him

  277. to live in a building

  278. or dictate plans to him

  279. or tell him what to do.

  280. God is not limited

  281. by our thoughts of him.

  282. Not bound to do

  283. what we should think he should do.

  284. Now, given that,

  285. given the freedom of God,

  286. what comes next?

  287. And really the big idea

  288. in the passage is surprising.

  289. Okay?

  290. God is free to do

  291. what he wants to do.

  292. The story of history

  293. is the story of his actions.

  294. And yet,

  295. the free God does what?

  296. He binds himself to a promise.

  297. He binds himself to a promise.

  298. The whole chapter really

  299. reads like an ancient legal document.

  300. Ancient legal documents

  301. had a particular structure

  302. and order.

  303. They start with a sort of

  304. a preamble

  305. which introduces

  306. the parties making the agreement.

  307. And that's God.

  308. We're told who God is

  309. and what he's done in the past.

  310. Next come the commitments

  311. that the party makes

  312. with references to blessings

  313. and curses associated with it.

  314. And that's exactly

  315. what's going on here.

  316. You've got the preamble.

  317. You've got the past action.

  318. You've got the present commitments.

  319. And then you've got the blessings

  320. and the curses.

  321. You know,

  322. if you were to receive it

  323. through the post,

  324. it would look like,

  325. you know,

  326. like a legal document.

  327. Like something

  328. containing a promise.

  329. Something binding.

  330. A covenant.

  331. And here in 2 Samuel chapter 7,

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  332. that's exactly what it is.

  333. It's the free God.

  334. The God who can do

  335. whatever he wants to do

  336. whenever he chooses to do it.

  337. That God is binding himself

  338. to a covenant,

  339. a promise,

  340. a commitment to David.

  341. And look at the detail

  342. of it with me.

  343. Notice how

  344. gone are the sort of

  345. I have's.

  346. You know,

  347. I did this,

  348. I did that.

  349. And now what you get

  350. in verse 9

  351. is the I will's.

  352. So God is not just describing

  353. what he's done in the past.

  354. He's now saying

  355. what he's promising to do

  356. in the future.

  357. I will,

  358. verse 9,

  359. make your name great.

  360. I will,

  361. verse 10,

  362. provide a place.

  363. I will,

  364. verse 11,

  365. give you rest from your enemies.

  366. I will,

  367. verse 12,

  368. raise up your offspring

  369. and I will establish

  370. his kingdom.

  371. I will,

  372. verse 13,

  373. establish the throne

  374. of his kingdom forever.

  375. I will,

  376. verse 14,

  377. be to him a father,

  378. disciplining him

  379. but loving him steadfastly.

  380. This must be mind-blowing

  381. for David

  382. and we'll see

  383. in the second half

  384. and we'll look at this

  385. next week,

  386. how he responds

  387. but just notice

  388. what God is doing.

  389. Despite his freedom,

  390. tying himself

  391. to work

  392. through the line of David

  393. to build a kingdom,

  394. a kingdom that will be planted

  395. in a particular place,

  396. a kingdom that will have rest

  397. from its enemies,

  398. a kingdom that will last

  399. forever

  400. and ever and ever.

  401. In other words,

  402. David,

  403. you think,

  404. don't you,

  405. you know,

  406. David,

  407. you look at the tent

  408. in which the ark is

  409. and you think

  410. God is dwelling

  411. in a very temporary

  412. arrangement here

  413. and you look

  414. at your house

  415. and think,

  416. I've built myself

  417. a cedar house

  418. that's going to last

  419. a very long time

  420. and God says,

  421. no,

  422. let me show you something

  423. that will really last forever.

  424. It's the house

  425. that I will build.

  426. It's the promise

  427. that I will make,

  428. a forever kingdom

  429. of blessing

  430. and peace

  431. with a king

  432. from your own family line,

  433. a king

  434. who I promise

  435. to love

  436. and never let go.

  437. Now,

  438. of course,

  439. we know

  440. and we looked at this

  441. earlier,

  442. didn't we,

  443. that this promise

  444. is fulfilled

  445. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  446. Jesus is the one

  447. who will be king

  448. on David's throne.

  449. As you read through

  450. the promise,

  451. you can see how

  452. some of it

  453. is kept by Solomon,

  454. don't you?

  455. You can see that

  456. but really,

  457. it's pointing beyond Solomon

  458. to someone greater

  459. than Solomon even,

  460. someone who will be born

  461. in David's town,

  462. someone who will be born

  463. in David's line,

  464. given the throne

  465. of his father David.

  466. Christ will have

  467. the great name,

  468. won't he,

  469. at which every knee

  470. will bow.

  471. Christ will bring us

  472. final rest from our enemies.

  473. He is the one

  474. who is appointed

  475. king of an eternal kingdom,

  476. a kingdom not of this world

  477. but a kingdom of heaven.

  478. Christ is the king

  479. who is disciplined

  480. not for his iniquity

  481. but for our iniquity

  482. as he is punished

  483. not for his sins

  484. with rods and stripes

  485. but bearing in his body

  486. the penalty for our sin

  487. and our wrongdoing,

  488. building a house of God,

  489. not of cedar or bricks

  490. or mortar

  491. but a house of people

  492. placed like living stones

  493. with him the cornerstone,

  494. a dwelling place of God

  495. for all eternity.

  496. So here again

  497. in 2 Samuel chapter 7,

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  498. God binds himself

  499. to a promise

  500. that will only be fulfilled

  501. when Christ comes.

  502. You know,

  503. all the mini-fulfillments

  504. before then

  505. in the life of David

  506. and his sons

  507. are just signposts

  508. to this greater fulfillment

  509. in Jesus Christ.

  510. I don't know

  511. whether you've thought

  512. about this before

  513. but you know this promise

  514. that runs all the way

  515. through the Bible

  516. that we're getting expanded

  517. on in 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  518. You realise,

  519. don't you,

  520. it starts back in Genesis

    Genesis 3:15

  521. chapter 3 verse 15

  522. when God promises

  523. to send someone

  524. who will crush

  525. the head of Satan,

  526. the serpent.

  527. You know what he's doing

  528. then, don't you?

  529. He is binding himself

  530. by a promise

  531. to send his own son

  532. to the cross.

  533. You know that, don't you?

  534. God is binding himself

  535. to a promise

  536. to send his own son

  537. to the cross

  538. and that's what's going on here,

  539. isn't it?

  540. He is saying,

  541. listen, I will do this.

  542. You can be sure.

  543. So God, the free God

  544. who can do whatever he pleases,

  545. not subject to us

  546. in any way,

  547. voluntarily

  548. through no compulsion on him,

  549. not because David deserved it,

  550. not because he owed it

  551. to humanity in any way,

  552. yet quite the opposite.

  553. He still,

  554. he binds himself

  555. to a promise

  556. to save

  557. through the blood

  558. of his own son.

  559. Let me just try

  560. and illustrate

  561. the kind of,

  562. the wonder

  563. of what's going on here,

  564. just so that we can grasp this,

  565. if you can,

  566. with me for a moment.

  567. I want you to imagine

  568. that this afternoon

  569. you go to Battersea Dogs' home

  570. to pick up a new dog.

  571. Okay?

  572. You go to the dog shelter

  573. to pick up a new dog.

  574. Not a bad idea, is it, Alvina?

  575. A dog is a great thing, right?

  576. So you go there,

  577. you look at all

  578. the different kinds of dogs

  579. and what you do

  580. is you find

  581. a particularly nasty dog.

  582. It's jumping

  583. at the cage door.

  584. As you go in,

  585. it's barking

  586. and snapping

  587. and generally

  588. being a nuisance.

  589. Crazily though,

  590. as you're walking

  591. down this line

  592. of beautiful looking dogs

  593. and you get to this

  594. crazy snapping dog,

  595. you stop at the cage

  596. and you look at it.

  597. You even reach

  598. your hand in

  599. to give the dog

  600. some attention,

  601. show it a bit of affection.

  602. The affection

  603. is not appreciated

  604. by the dog

  605. who bites the hand

  606. that you put in the cage.

  607. But undeterred,

  608. you say,

  609. is it okay

  610. if I climb in there

  611. with him?

  612. Oh, well,

  613. if you really want to,

  614. yeah, go for it.

  615. So you climb in

  616. and the dog bites you again

  617. and wheezes on your leg

  618. and puts a hole

  619. in your trousers.

  620. Still though,

  621. you're not put off

  622. and you say to the person

  623. who owns the shelter,

  624. I'm going to take

  625. that dog home.

  626. That dog

  627. is going to be my dog.

  628. And the person

  629. who runs the shelter

  630. looks at you

  631. and says,

  632. wait a minute,

  633. do you know

  634. what you're doing?

  635. Do you know

  636. if you take that dog

  637. away from here,

  638. you know you're not

  639. bringing them back,

  640. don't you?

  641. You're taking that dog away

  642. and that dog

  643. will belong to you.

  644. It will ruin your life.

  645. It will destroy

  646. your property.

  647. It will ruin everything

  648. that you've hoped to do.

  649. Are you sure

  650. you want to do it?

  651. Have you ever seen

  652. a vet bill before?

  653. Once you've taken that dog,

  654. our policy is

  655. you cannot return it.

  656. Oh, no, I know,

  657. you say,

  658. but I love that dog.

  659. I have chosen

  660. to love that dog

  661. and I will have him

  662. and I promise

  663. to take it home.

  664. Bring me the paperwork.

  665. I'm going to sign on the line.

  666. Now, of course,

  667. it's a stupid story,

  668. isn't it?

  669. Because you would never do it,

  670. right?

  671. You would never go

  672. to the dog's home

  673. and choose a nasty dog

  674. that bites you,

  675. ruins your house

  676. and costs you

  677. all that you have

  678. and bind yourself

  679. to take it home

  680. and live with it

  681. for the rest of your life,

  682. would you?

  683. You wouldn't do that,

  684. would you?

  685. That would be crazy.

  686. That, though,

  687. is exactly what's going on

  688. in 2 Samuel chapter 7.

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  689. God is doing that

  690. and you and I

  691. are the snappy dog,

  692. right?

  693. God is promising,

  694. isn't he?

  695. Binding himself

  696. to a promise

  697. to bring us home,

  698. though it costs him

  699. everything,

  700. the life of his son.

  701. I will have that people.

  702. They will be mine.

  703. That kingdom

  704. will belong to me.

  705. I want to labour this point

  706. a little bit this morning

  707. because it's right

  708. at the heart of the passage.

  709. If you're not a Christian

  710. this morning,

  711. it's brilliant that you're here.

  712. Thanks for coming.

  713. This is a really great

  714. explanation for you

  715. of what it means

  716. to be a Christian.

  717. The Bible tells us this,

  718. that the truth of the universe

  719. is not that people

  720. are searching for God.

  721. I know that's what we think,

  722. right?

  723. I know that's how we talk,

  724. you know,

  725. as if people are on a journey

  726. looking for God

  727. and, you know,

  728. maybe he's hiding

  729. underneath that rock

  730. or that rock over there.

  731. That's what people think,

  732. isn't it?

  733. But that's not what

  734. the Bible says is happening.

  735. Nor is the story

  736. of the universe

  737. about people working

  738. really hard

  739. so that God

  740. owes them something.

  741. You know,

  742. as if we could do

  743. certain kind of

  744. moral actions

  745. and God then has to act

  746. in a certain way

  747. towards us.

  748. That's what religion

  749. tells you, right?

  750. You know,

  751. do this,

  752. pray like this,

  753. fast like this

  754. and God will have

  755. to bless you

  756. because you will

  757. bind God.

  758. That's nonsense.

  759. The message of the Bible

  760. is that God is free.

  761. He has to be.

  762. To be God,

  763. he has to be free.

  764. But the heart

  765. of the Christian gospel,

  766. the truth at the center

  767. of the universe

  768. is that in

  769. an inexplicable love,

  770. he has bound himself

  771. through a free choice

  772. of his own

  773. to love you,

  774. me,

  775. and save us

  776. that we might belong

  777. to him.

  778. That plan

  779. isn't entered

  780. into lightly.

  781. It's not invented

  782. by the New Testament

  783. writers.

  784. It wasn't hatched

  785. just as the build-up

  786. to the cross

  787. of Jesus Christ.

  788. It's right here

  789. from the beginning

  790. of the Bible.

  791. It's here

  792. in 2 Samuel chapter 7

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  793. as God commits himself

  794. to David

  795. to put someone

  796. on his throne

  797. forever and ever

  798. and ever.

  799. Now that leads us

  800. to the one application

  801. for David

  802. and for us this morning.

  803. If God is free,

  804. he binds himself

  805. to a promise.

  806. The one application

  807. is this,

  808. trust.

  809. Trust in the promise.

  810. Trust in the promise.

  811. Now imagine

  812. if the story

  813. went something like this.

  814. David says to Nathan,

  815. you know,

  816. I'm going to build

  817. a permanent house

  818. for God.

  819. Nathan says,

  820. no, don't do that.

  821. God's not interested

  822. in you building

  823. a house for him.

  824. He will build

  825. a house for you.

  826. David says,

  827. oh, come on, Nathan,

  828. forget that.

  829. I've got some

  830. brilliant plans.

  831. I've bought

  832. the curtains already.

  833. Pharaoh and Ball

  834. have got some

  835. lovely, lovely colours

  836. and I've decided

  837. to use them already.

  838. So forget that.

  839. I'm just going

  840. to go ahead

  841. and build the house anyway.

  842. What would you think?

  843. Well, I mean,

  844. you'd think that David

  845. had lost his mind,

  846. but you'd probably

  847. rightly conclude

  848. that David was going

  849. to be in a lot of trouble,

  850. but a lot of trouble

  851. for what?

  852. For what?

  853. Well, not simply

  854. for the wrong action

  855. of building the temple

  856. when he was not supposed to,

  857. but for the wrong action

  858. of failing to trust

  859. the promise of God.

  860. That's what.

  861. Because this is it.

  862. The gospel is God

  863. freely making

  864. a generous promise

  865. and our response

  866. is not to insist

  867. on our own plans,

  868. but to trust him

  869. to follow through

  870. with his.

  871. You see,

  872. the implication

  873. of 2 Samuel chapter 7

    2 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  874. is that the only place

  875. of safety in our world

  876. is knowing what God's plan is

  877. and trusting it.

  878. That's the only safe place.

  879. All your other ideas

  880. and plans for your life

  881. are wobbly,

  882. aren't they?

  883. Don't build on those

  884. because they may not happen.

  885. The safe place

  886. in our world

  887. is knowing what God

  888. has promised

  889. and trusting him to do it.

  890. It means,

  891. doesn't it,

  892. for us as Christians

  893. our two big dangers

  894. in life are these.

  895. One is a preoccupation

  896. with our own plans

  897. and the second

  898. is the assumption

  899. that God should do

  900. what I would do

  901. if I was him.

  902. Think about that first one.

  903. There is a terrible

  904. spiritual danger

  905. in self-preoccupation.

  906. You know that,

  907. don't you?

  908. You know,

  909. if we are so preoccupied

  910. with what we want to do,

  911. with what we want to achieve

  912. with our lives,

  913. if we think this world

  914. is really about my story,

  915. about what I am doing,

  916. then actually that's the opposite

  917. of trusting in Christ

  918. and following him.

  919. Jesus summarizes

  920. the Christian life

  921. as taking up our cross

  922. and following him,

  923. which is by definition

  924. the laying down

  925. of our own plans

  926. to follow him

  927. and trust in his.

  928. The apostle Paul

  929. says to the Ephesian elders

  930. in Acts chapter 20

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  931. that he counts his life

  932. as little to him,

  933. if only he may finish

  934. the race

  935. that the Lord

  936. has set out for him.

  937. Listen,

  938. what I want

  939. doesn't really matter anymore.

  940. It's what he wants.

  941. I'm trusting him.

  942. I'm living for him.

  943. Galatians 2 verse 20

    Galatians 2:20

  944. says the same sort of thing.

  945. I've been crucified

  946. with Christ

  947. and I no longer live,

  948. but Christ lives in me.

  949. The life I now live

  950. in the body,

  951. I live by faith

  952. in the Son of God

  953. who loved me

  954. and gave himself for me.

  955. This life I live

  956. trusting his promise,

  957. doing what he wants,

  958. following his way.

  959. Because trusting God,

  960. trusting the promise

  961. that he makes

  962. goes along

  963. with abandoning

  964. our own plans,

  965. just as it did

  966. for David here.

  967. So if you're not

  968. a Christian this morning,

  969. again,

  970. this is the point

  971. for you, isn't it?

  972. This is your David-like

  973. moment, if you like.

  974. You know,

  975. it's not the prophet

  976. Nathan speaking to you.

  977. I'm speaking to you

  978. from God's word,

  979. but this is the message,

  980. isn't it?

  981. Those things

  982. that you've planned to do,

  983. just pause on those

  984. for a moment

  985. and listen to what

  986. God has planned to do.

  987. God says to you this morning,

  988. I know that you've planned

  989. to go here,

  990. to go there,

  991. to do this,

  992. to do that,

  993. but I am promising

  994. to say through Jesus Christ,

  995. will you trust me?

  996. Will you trust me?

  997. Come follow me.

  998. The second danger

  999. for us if we're Christians

  1000. this morning

  1001. is this assumption

  1002. that God would have

1003. to do what we would do,

  1004. as if God's priorities

  1005. for our lives

  1006. are the same

  1007. as our priorities,

  1008. that his aspirations

  1009. for my career

1010. are the same as mine.

  1011. But that's really,

  1012. that would be another

  1013. alternative ending

  1014. to the story,

  1015. wouldn't it?

  1016. You know,

  1017. imagine this,

  1018. David says to Nathan

  1019. the prophet,

  1020. I'm going to build

  1021. a house for God.

  1022. Nathan says,

  1023. well,

  1024. let me ask God

  1025. what he says.

  1026. God says,

  1027. oh,

  1028. what a brilliant idea,

  1029. David.

1030. I've never thought of that.

  1031. Please do,

  1032. go ahead.

1033. Tell me what else to do.

  1034. Tell me what next.

1035. That would be a total disaster,

  1036. wouldn't it?

  1037. All of a sudden,

  1038. David would have

  1039. a responsibility

  1040. way above his wisdom

  1041. or power

  1042. because for David's joy,

  1043. for God's glory,

  1044. for David's hope,

  1045. God must be God

1046. and David must be David.

  1047. But the truth is,

  1048. sometimes we treat God

1049. as if God must do

  1050. what we say.

  1051. We assume that God

  1052. needs to hear

  1053. our good ideas

  1054. and our plans

  1055. and our hopes

  1056. and our dreams

1057. as if God doesn't have

1058. an agenda of his own

  1059. for our lives,

  1060. but he does.

  1061. God in Christ

  1062. has a promise

  1063. for the future.

  1064. It's a solid one,

1065. one that he's committed to.

  1066. It's a plan

  1067. not for our pleasure

  1068. or for our ease

  1069. in this life,

  1070. but for a glorious

  1071. eternal kingdom

  1072. in the next.

  1073. Listen,

  1074. if we've been taught

  1075. anything this week

1076. and if we're going to think

  1077. about one thing

  1078. this evening,

  1079. it's this,

  1080. isn't it?

  1081. God has a way

  1082. of surprising us

  1083. and reminding us

  1084. that he is God

  1085. and we are very,

  1086. very temporary.

  1087. Our lives are short.

1088. Where is the solid ground

  1089. in this life?

  1090. Trusting God

  1091. and his promise.

1092. It's the only solid ground

  1093. because the only thing

  1094. that you know

  1095. will happen in life

  1096. is that God

  1097. will save his people

  1098. through Jesus Christ.

1099. That you know to be true.

  1100. And you and I

  1101. are invited this morning

  1102. to find our joy

  1103. and our hope

  1104. and our confidence,

  1105. our consolation

  1106. and our comfort

  1107. in trusting God's

  1108. unfailing promise

  1109. kept in Jesus Christ.

  1110. Let me pray

  1111. as I close.

  1112. Let's pray.

  1113. Heavenly Father,

1114. we thank you so much

  1115. for this wonderful promise

  1116. that you will send

  1117. the Lord Jesus Christ

  1118. to be king

  1119. forever and ever.

  1120. We thank you

  1121. that we see

  1122. with even greater clarity

  1123. than David

1124. how you've kept that promise

  1125. in the first coming

  1126. of the Lord Jesus.

1127. You died for our sin

  1128. and rose again

  1129. and ascended into heaven.

  1130. And thank you

  1131. that you have promised

1132. that he is returning one day.

  1133. And Lord,

  1134. we pray now

1135. that you would help us

  1136. to live our lives

  1137. trusting in him

  1138. and his promise,

  1139. not in us

1140. and our own brilliant ideas.

  1141. Lord,

  1142. we pray that increasingly,

  1143. day by day,

1144. we would take a back cross,

  1145. die to ourselves

  1146. and live for you

  1147. and your glory.

  1148. Forgive us

  1149. that so often

  1150. we are preoccupied

  1151. with ourselves

  1152. and our own ideas

  1153. and we cast rather

  1154. just light thoughts

  1155. to you and yours.

1156. Help us to have big thoughts

  1157. about who you are

  1158. and little thoughts

  1159. about us.

  1160. In Jesus' name.

  1161. Amen.
