  1. And Liz is going to come and read God's word for us.

  2. So Liz, over to you. Thank you.

  3. To Samuel chapter 10.

  4. In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died

  5. and his son Hanum succeeded him as king.

  6. David thought, I will show kindness to Hanum, son of Nahash,

  7. just as his father showed kindness to me.

  8. So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanum concerning his father.

  9. When David's men came to the land of the Ammonites,

  10. the Ammonite commanders said to Hanum, their lord,

  11. do you think David is honoring your father by sending envoys to you to express sympathy?

  12. Hasn't David sent them to you only to explore the city and to spy it out and overthrow it?

  13. So Hanum seized David's envoys, shaved off half of each man's beard,

  14. cut off their garments of the buttocks and sent them away.

  15. When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men,

  16. but they were greatly humiliated.

  17. The king said, stay at Jericho till your beards have grown and then come back.

  18. When the Ammonites realized that they had become obnoxious to David,

  19. they hired 20,000 Aramean foot soldiers from Beth Rehob and Zobah,

  20. as well as the king of Marka with 1,000 men and also 12,000 men from Tob.

  21. On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men.

  22. The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance of the city gate,

  23. while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Meaka were by themselves in the open country.

  24. Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him.

  25. So he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans.

  26. He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai, his brother,

  27. and deployed them against the Ammonites.

  28. Joab said, if the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue.

  29. But the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come and rescue you.

  30. Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God.

  31. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.

  32. Then Joab and the troops went with him.

  33. Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans and they fled before him.

  34. When the Ammonites realized that the Arameans were fleeing,

  35. they fled before Abishai and went inside the city.

  36. So Joab returned from fighting the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem.

  37. After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they regrouped.

  38. Hadadiza had Arameans brought from beyond the river Euphrates.

  39. They went to Helam with Shobak, the commander of Hadadiza's army leading them.

  40. When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan and went to Helam.

  41. The Arameans formed their battle lines to meet David and fought against him.

  42. But they fled before Israel and David killed 700 of their charities, 40,000 of their foot soldiers.

  43. He also struck down Shobak, the commander of their army, and he died there.

  44. When all the kings who were vassals of Hadadiza saw that they had been routed by Israel,

  45. they made peace with the Israelites and became subject to them.

  46. So the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore.

  47. Now, as we start this morning, I want you to imagine with me that you're at the top of a roller coaster.

  48. Looking at some of you, it's probably been a few years since you've been on a roller coaster.

  49. So let me try and describe it for you and what it's like.

  50. You know, roller coasters make that sort of slow ascent, don't they?

  51. And it goes click, click, click, click, click, click as you get to the top of the roller coaster.

  52. And then you hang there just for a few moments.

  53. And you know that it's about to thunder down the loops and go round and round.

  54. But just for a few seconds, you're hanging there at the top of the roller coaster.

  55. Click, click, click, click, stop.

  56. What are you thinking to yourself in that moment as you're at the top of the roller coaster?

  57. Right at the top, you know it's about to hurtle down the tracks.

  58. What are you checking?

  59. Well, I think if you're anything like me, you're going to be just giving it a little push on that safety bar, aren't you?

  60. Is that properly engaged?

  61. Is that actually going to hold me?

  62. You'll probably glance across to the five-year-old who's sat next to you perfectly calmly and thinking,

  63. I'll pull yourself together, Steve.

  64. If they think they're going to be all right, you're going to be all right.

  65. But it's that last minute thought, isn't it?

  66. Am I going to be safe?

  67. Is this going to be okay?

  68. Let me check.

  69. Now, in a way, 2 Samuel chapter 10 is that kind of pause at the top of a roller coaster.

    2 Samuel 10 chapter mention

  70. We've climbed the heights, if you've been with us, we've climbed the heights of David's success.

  71. We have seen him being anointed as king.

  72. We've seen him uniting the kingdom.

  73. We've seen him getting everybody together underneath his rule in Jerusalem.

  74. And we are about to descend into the chaos of the rest of his life.

  75. And if you know anything about the story of David, you know that there are some twists and turns to come.

  76. It's going to be a terrifying run.

  77. And here in chapter 10, you've got this pause.

  78. You're hanging at the top.

  79. It's about to fall.

  80. And there is, in chapter 10, a safety check for us.

  81. Right at the heart of the passage, the safety bar for the roller coaster of life, if you want to put it that way.

  82. And it's what we looked at with the children.

  83. And so I want us to come and spend most of our time thinking about that and how that works.

  84. But before we do that, let me just run through the story so that we know what's going on here.

  85. The story starts, doesn't it, with David showing kindness again.

  86. We saw last week him showing kindness to a guy called Mephibosheth.

  87. But this time he is showing kindness to a guy called Hanan, who is the new king of the Ammonites.

  88. We haven't got time for all of that background, but Hanan's father, Nahash, appears previously in the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 11,

    1 Samuel 11 chapter mention

  89. when he threatens the residents of a place called Jabesh Gilead, telling them that he's coming and he's going to gouge out their right eyes.

  90. Anyway, Saul, who's the king of Israel, comes to rescue them and defeats the Ammonite army.

  91. And ever since then, he's put Nahash in his place.

  92. But now Nahash is dead in 2 Samuel, chapter 10, and his son, Hanan, is king in his place.

    2 Samuel 10 chapter mention

  93. And David thinks, OK, so what I'm going to do, I defeated his father, or my predecessors all defeated his father, and we had a treaty with him.

  94. Let me now show kindness to his son so that we might carry on in this relationship with one another.

  95. The word kindness there is the Hebrew word hesed that we saw last week.

  96. It's this sense of a promised kindness, a covenant, that there's been this sort of arrangement between David and the Ammonites

  97. that we will be kind to you.

  98. But Hanan has other ideas, doesn't he?

  99. On the advice of his young princes, he's persuaded that David had bad motives in sending servants to his land.

  100. So what do they do? Well, they humiliate them.

  101. They shave off half of their beards, and they cut their clothes off at the waist.

  102. Now, as insults go, that's pretty bad, isn't it?

  103. Cutting off half their beards would have been seen as an insult to their manliness.

  104. And chopping off their clothes at the hips meant that they had to walk home with their buns exposed,

  105. which would have been embarrassing.

  106. But it's not a kind of practical joke, is it?

  107. Actually, they know, don't they?

  108. Hanan knows.

  109. David understands.

  110. This is effectively the weirdest, but most successful, the weirdest declaration of war you've ever heard in your life.

  111. How can I declare war against David?

  112. Well, I tell you what, he'll send envoys to me.

  113. I'll shave off half their beards and cut off their clothes so they walk home semi-naked.

  114. He will know I'm in business.

  115. And so that's what happens.

  116. The Ammonites get themselves ready.

  117. Now, without getting too technical or boring you with the details here,

  118. the way the rest of the story is broken up is with a series of five they saw or they heard statements

  119. which come at the beginning of each scene.

  120. That there's one in verse 6, one in verse 7, one in verse 9, one in verse 15, and one in verse 19.

  121. Starting off in verse 6, the NLV translates it,

  122. they realized.

  123. Literally, the Ammonites see war coming.

  124. They have hired a load of help then from the Syrians.

  125. And then David, when he hears that in verse 7, sends out Joab with the mighty men to sort it out.

  126. It seems from the context, and we'll see this in weeks to come,

  127. that most of this happens in the city of Rabba.

  128. And the situation is perilous for Joab because the Ammonites come and meet him outside the city

  129. while the hired Syrians come behind him,

  130. trapping the soldiers in between two armies,

  131. one just outside the city and one coming up from behind him.

  132. In response, Joab sets his brother up to fight the Ammonites in front of the city

  133. while he takes the best of the men to fight the professional soldiers who've come from Syria,

  134. telling his brother Abishai that they will fight for one another,

  135. helping each other out if it all gets a bit much.

  136. What's amazing and should stun you as you read the passage

  137. is that both Joab and Abishai win,

  138. and the Assyrians flee back into their city of Rabba,

  139. and the Assyrians run back and regroup.

  140. Now the follow-up battle with the Assyrians at Rabba will happen in chapters 11 and 12,

  141. and you might know a guy called Uriah the Hittite who dies close to the wall,

  142. and we'll find out more about that story in weeks to come.

  143. So chapter 10 kind of works as this link passage, if you like.

  144. It links back with David's hesed kindness in chapter 9,

  145. and it links forward with this battle for a place called Rabba,

  146. which we'll find in weeks to come.

  147. But before that, the Syrians have regrouped and they're ready for a second try.

  148. Hadadezer, their king, has gathered more of his military power,

  149. but still he is defeated by David and the Israelites,

  150. killing 40,000 of their horsemen and 700 of their chariot riders,

  151. including their army captain.

  152. Now, if all that seems familiar to you,

  153. it's because this victory was also mentioned in chapter 8,

  154. which we saw previously.

  155. It's a famous victory as David wins peace with the surrounding nations,

  156. and they all think twice now about threatening David.

  157. Now, that's the story.

  158. I grant you that the killing of 40,000 soldiers

  159. doesn't exactly sound like calm before a storm,

  160. but believe me, if you know the rest of this story,

  161. this is the calm before the storm.

  162. This is the very top of the roller coaster.

  163. Click, click, click, and we're here.

  164. It's all downhill from here.

  165. And then look at the safety check right in the middle here.

  166. This is the final test of the bar of the roller coaster.

  167. Look at verse 12.

  168. Let me read it to you again.

  169. Be strong.

  170. Let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God.

  171. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.

  172. Now, it's worth noting that this is Joab,

  173. the crazy commander of David's army, who's saying this.

  174. Joab, who to this point, and really from this point,

  175. shows himself essentially to be a thug,

  176. who's capable of killing lots of different people.

  177. But here the writer puts these amazing words in his mouth,

  178. which are meant to help us navigate the rest of the book of 2 Samuel.

  179. So let's just consider those words together

  180. and work backwards through them with me.

  181. Notice the statement at the end.

  182. Notice that he says that the Lord will do what is good in his sight.

  183. That might sound to you just relatively straightforward.

  184. Of course, God will do what is good in his sight.

  185. That's kind of obvious, isn't it?

  186. Every religion, everybody who believes in God says,

  187. oh yeah, God does what's good to him.

  188. God does what's good in his sight.

  189. But there's more to it than that,

  190. because it's interesting that while Joab is confident

  191. that God will do what seems good to him,

  192. he knows that there is no promise to him

  193. that he and his brother Abishai will survive the next few hours.

  194. He has no promise of victory for his army.

  195. So look at the beginning of the sentence,

  196. as we read with the children from verse 11.

  197. He says, if the Arameans are too strong for me,

  198. then you are to come to my rescue.

  199. But if the Ammonites are too strong for you,

  200. then I will come to rescue you.

  201. Be strong and let us fight bravely.

  202. There's a lot of ifs there.

  203. Joab is genuinely not sure what is going to happen next,

  204. even while he is sure that God will do what is good in his eyes.

  205. He's pinned by the Ammonites and the Syrians.

  206. And his confidence is not,

  207. God is going to give me a famous victory here.

  208. It's not that, is it?

  209. It's God will do what seems good to him.

  210. Now, that's not because Joab doesn't have faith.

  211. This isn't being written as a sign of Joab's weakness.

  212. Well, the point is that Joab knows enough

  213. to know that God will do what seems good to him,

  214. but that doesn't carry a particular specific promise

  215. that this situation that's in front of him.

  216. To put it really bluntly,

  217. Joab knows that it could seem good to God

  218. for him to be defeated.

  219. Think about it like this.

  220. Joab is essentially articulating two truths for us.

  221. On the one hand, he knows that there is a God

  222. who rules and reigns,

  223. who has plans that can never be thwarted.

  224. God knows who he is and knows what he's doing

  225. and will do what he plans to do.

  226. He knows that David can defeat Goliath.

  227. He knows that trumpets and shouting

  228. can bring down city walls.

  229. He knows that striking rods against rocks

  230. can produce water when God wants it to,

  231. that rivers can stand still

  232. and people can wear a cross.

  233. None of that is in doubt.

  234. He knows who God is

  235. and knows that God does what God says.

  236. Yet on the other hand,

  237. he knows that there's a whole host of things

  238. in his life and in his world

  239. that he has absolutely no certainty for.

  240. There are things that God only knows,

  241. information which he has withheld from his people.

  242. So Joab knows that he has not been promised victory

  243. in that moment,

  244. in that battle.

  245. You can imagine, can't you,

  246. that Joab, at this point in his life,

  247. one of his brothers has died in tragic circumstances,

  248. even though they were winning a battle.

  249. He knows, doesn't he,

  250. that God is capable of fulfilling his plans

  251. whilst also humbling him.

  252. I might die, says Joab.

  253. Now keep working backwards in verse 12

  254. with those two sets of information,

  255. God's solid plans and my uncertain future.

  256. What does Joab do

  257. with those two sets of information?

  258. What does he say to Abishai, his brother?

  259. You know, okay, God has his good plans.

  260. We're not sure what's going to happen to us.

  261. Run in fear.

  262. No, he doesn't say that, does he?

  263. What does he say?

  264. Verse 12, he says,

  265. be strong, fight bravely for God's people

  266. and for the cities of God,

  267. fighting boldly for what they understand

  268. to be God's purposes,

  269. trusting that whatever the outcome for them personally,

  270. this is the best way to live our lives,

  271. trusting God, even though we're uncertain.

  272. It's fascinating, isn't it?

  273. The safety bar at the top of this roller coaster

  274. in Joab's life and the life of Israel

  275. is not a promise that God will not bring hard things

  276. into their lives.

  277. Notice that.

  278. The safety bar is not a promise

  279. that he will win every battle.

  280. It's a promise that God doing what is good in his sight

  281. is enough for him to live courageously, bravely,

  282. whatever the future holds.

  283. Think about this for ourselves for a moment.

  284. Perhaps it is this morning

  285. that you are facing uncertain times.

  286. Maybe your job is a bit rocky.

  287. Maybe your family relationships are a bit difficult.

  288. Maybe your housing situation needs resolving.

  289. Perhaps you need to get a good set of results

  290. in your next exams.

  291. But listen, if you're a Christian this morning,

  292. what you need to understand

  293. is that those things are in this hand,

  294. not this one.

  295. There is no guarantee

  296. that you'll get the grades that you want

  297. or the university place that you want

  298. or the job that you want

  299. or that the family relationships

  300. will work out as you want.

  301. There is nothing like that promised to you.

  302. And being a Christian

  303. doesn't guarantee those things for you.

  304. Listen, if you find a preacher who says to you,

  305. listen, come to God and all of your plans will work out.

  306. If someone says that to you,

  307. don't listen to them.

  308. They're a liar.

  309. God does what seems good to him,

  310. what is good in his sight.

  311. The God of the universe,

  312. the one who rules and reigns,

  313. who knows all things and governs all things,

  314. who never makes mistakes

  315. and never thwarted by circumstances,

  316. he will do what he knows is good,

  317. what is best in the fullest sense of the world.

  318. He will do that.

  319. And that promise,

  320. the promise for God to do what is good in his sight

  321. is better for you

  322. than the promise for him

  323. to do whatever it is that you want him to do.

  324. And that means that you can live bravely for God,

  325. living not for yourself,

  326. but for God and his people

  327. and trusting his purposes.

  328. Think about another example with me for a moment.

  329. Maybe you're a parent.

  330. Let me tell you that there is no promise.

  331. This is in this hand.

  332. There is no promise

  333. that your children's lives will work out

  334. in the way that you want them to.

  335. Some of you know that, don't you, painfully.

  336. There is no promise

  337. that they will trust in the Lord.

  338. There's no promise

  339. that they will live their lives for him,

  340. even though that's what we desperately long for.

  341. There is no promise from God

  342. that if you do A, B, C, D,

  343. it will all work out well for your children.

  344. There is no promise like that.

  345. John Calvin,

  346. who's the great reformer of the 16th century,

  347. wrote in his sermon on this passage,

  348. he says this,

  349. we remain in suspense about much of our lives.

  350. We remain in suspense.

  351. We just don't know.

  352. We don't know.

  353. Just like Joab,

  354. I think we would love a promise,

  355. wouldn't we,

  356. that we wouldn't lose our own lives.

  357. But don't forget

  358. that this suspense that we live in

  359. is intended to drive us to the Lord

  360. who does what is good in his sight.

  361. Not away from him in despair,

  362. but towards him in dependence.

  363. It's a good thing

  364. that the God of infinite goodness and wisdom

  365. does what he thinks is best,

  366. not what I would like him to do necessarily.

  367. God's freedom to accomplish his plans

  368. rather than his bondage to do your plans

  369. is a good thing for all of us.

  370. So we should courageously live for him,

  371. commanding the gospel at every turn,

  372. making use of the things that he's given us

  373. in the life of the church

  374. to live patiently waiting

  375. for God to do what pleases him.

  376. You can think about it too, can't you,

  377. with other examples.

  378. You can think about it with your health

  379. or with your job

  380. or with your marriage,

  381. that there's no promise

  382. that you will live as long as you want to.

  383. There's no promise

  384. that you'll have the job of your dreams.

  385. There's no promise

  386. that your marriage will be easy and blissful.

  387. It might be that God has set for you

  388. suffering and difficulty

  389. in all of those areas,

  390. but that doesn't mean

  391. that God has forgotten you

  392. or in any sense that he's lost control

  393. or in any sense that you can't have confidence

  394. in him at all

  395. because God is doing what seems good to him

  396. so that you can live courageously for the Lord

  397. in the place that he's put you in,

  398. knowing that in all those uncertainties,

  399. they are still in God's good hands.

  400. And he has more power than you

  401. and is achieving something more beautiful

  402. and glorious than our health

  403. or our wealth or our prosperity.

  404. Now that's the simple truth

  405. in 2 Samuel chapter 10.

    2 Samuel 10 chapter mention

  406. But let me tell you,

  407. it's even more brilliant than that.

  408. Okay?

  409. There is something else going on in these verses

  410. which is so incredible

  411. it's going to blow our minds this morning

  412. when we see it.

  413. What's fascinating here

  414. is when Joab says this, okay?

  415. What is it that Joab has seen

  416. that makes him say,

  417. God will do what seems good to him

  418. even though I'm not sure

  419. what's going to happen to me?

  420. What is it that Joab has seen

  421. that makes him say that?

  422. Do you know?

  423. Well, he has seen the kindness of King David

  424. be rejected, hasn't he?

  425. David, in covenant kindness,

  426. has moved towards these Ammonites

  427. and tried to show them

  428. this kind of promise-keeping love and care

  429. and it's been rejected.

  430. And yet, still,

  431. he says,

  432. God will do what's good in his sight

  433. even though I don't know

  434. what's going to happen to me.

  435. You know, he knows, doesn't he?

  436. If the kindness of the king

  437. can be rejected,

  438. there's no guarantee

  439. that me, a brutal warrior,

  440. is going to win this battle.

  441. David was kind

  442. and that was overturned.

  443. How do I know

  444. what's going to happen to me?

  445. Now, if you zoom forward

  446. at one and a half thousand years

  447. from King David,

  448. you meet the real king,

  449. don't you?

  450. King Jesus,

  451. God the Son in human flesh.

  452. And what does he do?

  453. He doesn't send envoys

  454. to the Ammonites

  455. in covenant kindness, does he?

  456. No, he comes to us

  457. in covenant kindness.

  458. He says,

  459. I have come not to be served,

  460. but to serve

  461. and give my life

  462. as a ransom for many.

  463. I have come

  464. in covenant kindness

  465. to you

  466. to love you

  467. and give my life for you.

  468. And what happens

  469. to King Jesus

  470. in his hesed love?

  471. What happens?

  472. He's humiliated.

  473. Not by having his beard

  474. half shaved off,

  475. not by having his clothes

  476. cut down at the waist,

  477. but by being nailed to a cross

  478. in total nakedness.

  479. All of his clothes removed,

  480. hanging in shame

  481. and guilt on the cross.

  482. And rather like the Ammonites,

  483. we declare war,

  484. don't we,

  485. on the kindness of God's king.

  486. They declare war

  487. by doing that

  488. to David's envoys.

  489. We declare war

  490. on the God

  491. who made us

  492. by what we do to Jesus.

  493. And yet we find

  494. that even through

  495. the death

  496. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  497. even because

  498. of the death

  499. of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  500. God rescues

  501. and saves people

  502. for himself,

  503. forgiving their sin,

  504. cancelling their moral debt,

  505. paying in his own blood

  506. what their sin deserves.

  507. Now, because that's true,

  508. because the rejection

  509. of the kindness

  510. of the king

  511. can lead

  512. to salvation

  513. for me,

  514. I have even more reason

  515. than Joab

  516. to say,

  517. God,

  518. do what seems good

  519. to you,

  520. even if I don't know

  521. what will happen

  522. to me.

  523. God will do

  524. what is good

  525. in his sight

  526. and it will be good

  527. for me.

  528. That is the safety bar

  529. in my life,

  530. just like it's the safety bar

  531. in Joab's life.

  532. And if you like,

  533. when Joab pushes it,

  534. there's a few bits

  535. of wobbles.

  536. When we put it,

  537. there's no wobble

  538. at all

  539. because we know

  540. that the kindness

  541. of King Jesus

  542. that was rejected

  543. through his death

  544. on the cross

  545. has led

  546. to our salvation.

  547. Those were the good plans

  548. of God.

  549. So ifs don't matter

  550. because God will do

  551. what seems good to him

  552. and so I cling to him.

  553. I can be of good courage,

  554. I can be strong,

  555. I can fight bravely

  556. to live a life

  557. that pleases him

  558. courageously

  559. for the people of God

  560. and his purposes

  561. as he works all things out

  562. for the accomplishment

  563. of his plan.

  564. Listen,

  565. I started this morning

  566. and we're at the top

  567. of this roller coaster

  568. and the next five chapters

  569. of 2 Samuel

  570. are terrifying.

  571. terrifying.

  572. But let me say

  573. the next five chapters

  574. of your life

  575. might be terrifying.

  576. Who knows

  577. if we're even going to have

  578. another five chapters.

  579. Yet I know

  580. that there are

  581. some of you this morning

  582. who are still imagining

  583. that you can ride

  584. the roller coaster

  585. of whatever life

  586. is bringing next

  587. without a safety bar

  588. at all,

  589. without any confidence

  590. in the Lord Jesus.

  591. You know,

  592. I don't know

  593. what it is

  594. that you're thinking

  595. as you stare down

  596. the track

  597. of the rest of your life

  598. not knowing

  599. where it's going

  600. or what's going to happen.

  601. I don't know

  602. what you're thinking

  603. that you assume

  604. that you do not need

  605. to know a God

  606. who has good plans

  607. even in the ifs

  608. of our own lives.

  609. How do you imagine

  610. that you can ride

  611. that roller coaster

  612. without him?

  613. Listen,

  614. we're paused today

  615. at the top,

  616. aren't we?

  617. Click, click, click

  618. and we're waiting

  619. and today is the day

  620. to grab the safety bar

  621. and say,

  622. listen Lord,

  623. you have good plans.

  624. There are lots of ifs

  625. in my life

  626. but you have good plans

  627. in the kindness

  628. of the Son

  629. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  630. I'm grabbing hold

  631. of those

  632. and trusting you

  633. for that

  634. even in the ifs

  635. of my own life.

  636. Saying to the Lord,

  637. Lord, thank you

  638. for opening my eyes

  639. to the terror

  640. that life is without you

  641. that I might trust in you.

  642. Now help me Lord

  643. to trust you,

  644. to live courageously

  645. for you,

  646. knowing that

  647. if the kindness

  648. of King Jesus

  649. can forgive my sin

  650. then there's no

  651. loop-de-loop

  652. in my life

  653. which can throw me off.

  654. There's no sudden drop

  655. or bank curve

  656. that will come equal

  657. to your sovereign goodness.

  658. For others of you

  659. this morning,

  660. I know

  661. because I talk to you,

  662. I know that

  663. even as Christians

  664. there are twists

  665. and turns

  666. and loop-de-loops

  667. in your own life

  668. which are scary

  669. and terrifying.

  670. But we are paused

  671. together,

  672. aren't we,

  673. this morning

  674. to remind ourselves

  675. I belong to the Lord

  676. of closed-hand good plans

  677. even in the ifs

  678. of my own life.

  679. And that means

  680. I can live bravely

  681. for the Lord.

  682. I can live courageously.

  683. Not trusting erroneous promises

  684. that say,

  685. hey, come to the Lord

  686. and everything will be alright.

  687. No.

  688. But trusting that God

  689. does what seems good to him.

  690. You know,

  691. we're not promised,

  692. are we?

  693. It's the kind of theology

  694. of the street

  695. if you like,

  696. isn't it?

  697. You know,

  698. if you do good things

  699. God will give you

  700. what you want.

  701. Yeah,

  702. that's how we talk,

  703. isn't it?

  704. You know,

  705. if I go to church,

  706. if I say my prayers,

  707. if I read my Bible,

  708. then God will give me

  709. the things that I want

  710. for my life.

  711. That's what we say,

  712. isn't it?

  713. Listen,

  714. that theology of the bus

  715. is nonsense

  716. just like everything else

  717. you hear on the bus,

  718. right?

  719. It's rubbish.

  720. What is true

  721. is that God

  722. has good plans

  723. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  724. centered on him,

  725. granted for us

  726. through no good thing

  727. that we have done,

  728. only through his kindness

  729. to us

  730. and we can trust

  731. those plans

  732. even if

  733. ours don't work out.

  734. So we say,

  735. don't we,

  736. God,

  737. do what you want.

  738. I trust you

  739. that what seems good

  740. to you

  741. is what I want

  742. for my life.

  743. Trust in me,

  744. says the Lord Jesus,

  745. and I will do something

  746. that is even better

  747. than your own dreams.

  748. I will fulfill

  749. my plans

  750. and dreams,

  751. says the Lord.

  752. Let me pray

  753. as we close.

  754. Heavenly Father,

  755. we come before you

  756. this morning

  757. and we say

  758. that we're sorry

  759. that we've had

  760. the arrogance

  761. even to suggest

  762. to you

  763. that you should

  764. accomplish our plans

  765. and not your own.

  766. And yet,

  767. Lord,

  768. we also come

  769. with the tears

  770. and pain

  771. of knowing loss

  772. and difficulty

  773. and challenge

  774. and pain.

  775. And yet,

  776. Lord,

  777. we want to,

  778. by faith,

  779. say,

  780. Lord,

  781. do what is good

  782. in your sight

  783. and the Lord's

  784. and the Lord's

  785. love.

  786. And I will

  787. say that we trust you

  788. first.

  789. We would rather live

  790. in a world

  791. where you're in charge

  792. than one where

  793. we're in charge

  794. because we know

  795. that if you're the God

  796. who can save

  797. through the death

  798. of your son,

  799. you are the God

  800. who can bring us

  801. into your eternal kingdom

  802. even through

  803. a thousand pains

  804. and sufferings.

  805. So please,

  806. Lord,

  807. keep our eyes

  808. fixed on Jesus.

  809. Keep our hearts

  810. tender to him,

  811. we pray.

  812. In Jesus' name.

  813. Amen.

  814. Amen.
