  1. Revelation chapter 3 verses 14 to 22 and Morteza is going to come and read for us. Morteza, come to you.

    Revelation 3:14–22

  2. Good morning church.

  3. Revelation chapter 3 verses 14 to 22.

    Revelation 3:14–22

  4. To the angel of the church in Leodicea write,

  5. These are the words of Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation.

  6. I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.

  7. I wish you were either one or the other.

  8. So because you are lukewarm, neither hot or cold, I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

  9. You say, I am rich, I have acquired wealth, and do not need a thing.

  10. But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.

  11. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in a fire, so that you can become rich.

  12. And white clothes to wear, so that you can cover your shameful nakedness.

  13. And salve to put on your eyes, so that you can see.

  14. Those whom I love, I rebuke and discipline.

  15. So be earnest and repent.

  16. Here I am, I stand at the door and knock.

  17. If anybody hears my voice and open the doors, I will come in and eat with him and he with me.

  18. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,

  19. just as I overcome and sat down with my father on his throne.

  20. He who has ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  21. Amen.

  22. It is a great privilege to be with you this morning.

  23. And I'd ask that you keep your Bible open with me there at Revelation 3.

  24. And as we do so, let's bow our heads and let's pray together.

  25. Gracious Heavenly Father, we thank you that part of your wonderful kindness to us

  26. is that you speak to us through your written word.

  27. Thank you that every part of your word has been written down for us, for our good,

  28. that we might know you, that we might know your Son, the Lord Jesus,

  29. that we might, as we heard earlier, be disciple-making disciples,

  30. obeying everything the Lord Jesus has told us to do,

  31. trusting that he truly is always with us to the very end of the age.

  32. Father, please, in your kindness, would you speak to us now?

  33. Help us not to think how your word applies to someone else.

  34. Please speak to us, individually, directly, personally.

  35. We ask these things for Jesus' sake.

  36. Amen.

  37. Smiley.

  38. Smiley.

  39. It was a special game played by an elderly married couple who had played this game

  40. throughout more than 50 years of married life.

  41. The goal of the game was to write Smiley, S-H-M-I-L-Y,

  42. in a surprise place for the other person to find.

  43. They took turns leaving Smiley around the house,

  44. and as soon as one of them discovered it,

  45. well, it was the other one's turn to write Smiley somewhere.

  46. So they dragged Smiley with their fingers through sugar and flour containers in the kitchen.

  47. They wrote it in the condensation on the windows on cold winter mornings.

  48. They wrote it on the steamed-up mirror in the bathroom,

  49. and at one time the old lady even unrolled an entire roll of toilet paper

  50. to leave Smiley on the very last sheet.

  51. There was no end to the places where Smiley would appear.

  52. Little notes with Smiley scribbled hurriedly were found on dashboards,

  53. under car seats, taped to steering wheels.

  54. The little notes were stuffed in shoes or left under pillows.

  55. Smiley was written in dust on the mantelpiece, traced in the ashes of the fire.

  56. And when the old lady died, the floral tribute from her husband simply said,

  57. Smiley.

  58. Have you guessed what Smiley stands for yet?

  59. See how much I love you.

  60. See how much I love you.

  61. A foundation truth of Christianity is that the Christian man or woman is someone who is dearly loved.

  62. Dearly loved by the Lord Jesus Christ.

  63. And Smiley, see how much I love you, is written repeatedly on the pages of Scripture.

  64. Now of course the clearest place that it's written in Scripture is those that point us to the supreme demonstration

  65. of the love of the Lord Jesus.

  66. His sacrificial death on the cross in place of undeserving hell-bound sinners like me.

  67. So Smiley rings out when we read words like,

  68. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this.

  69. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  70. Or Galatians 2 verse 20 where Paul says,

    Galatians 2:20

  71. The Son of God loved me.

  72. And he says he's wondering that.

  73. And gave himself for me.

  74. If you're a Christian believer this morning and you need reassurance of the love of the Lord Jesus for them,

  75. Well I would urge you to look at the cross through which God says,

  76. Smiley to you.

  77. This is how God showed his love among us.

  78. He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

  79. This is love, not that we love God,

  80. but that God loved us.

  81. And sent his Son as the atoning sacrifice from our sins.

  82. That is the love from which nothing can separate the Christian believer.

  83. But here's my question this morning.

  84. Is the cross the only way that our Lord Jesus displays his love to his dearly loved people?

  85. It is to three further proofs of his love that this letter to the church at Laodicea points.

  86. The majestic, all-powerful, awesome Lord Jesus is giving his message to this church in Laodicea.

  87. A message if you look at verse 22 that's also for us,

  88. where we are told whoever is here, let them hear what the Spirit says to the church.

  89. And as our brother read it, did you notice how solemn the message is?

  90. Jesus pulls no punches.

  91. He highlights the sinful, casual, half-heartedness

  92. and the complacent self-sufficiency of this church in this place called Laodicea.

  93. Look at verse 15.

  94. Their casual, half-heartedness.

  95. He says, I know your deeds, that they are neither hot nor cold.

  96. I wish you were either one or the other.

  97. So because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold,

  98. I'm about to spit you out of my mouth.

  99. Verse 17, he speaks of their sinful, complacent self-sufficiency.

  100. You say, I'm rich, I've acquired wealth and do not need a thing.

  101. But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, naked.

  102. Imagine you were sitting in Laodicea Baptist Church or Free Church

  103. when this letter was first read out.

  104. You're thinking everything's going okay in your church.

  105. And then you hear these words of the Lord Jesus directed at you.

  106. Perhaps they were left reeling with the shock when they heard them.

  107. Perhaps there was a stunned silence came upon the congregation.

  108. Perhaps as they heard these words, some of the members were left wondering,

  109. look, if the awesome Lord of the universe is saying this about us,

  110. that he wants to spit us out of his mouth,

  111. is there any hope for us?

  112. Is he going to write us off?

  113. Well, look at verse 19.

  114. This is where our focus is this morning.

  115. Verse 19,

  116. Those whom I love, I rebuke.

  117. Let me tell you something, says our awesome Lord Jesus.

  118. My rebuking of you is a proof of my love for you.

  119. It's a smiley.

  120. A see how much I love you.

  121. And it is the first proof of the love of our Lord Jesus

  122. to which these verses draw our attention this morning.

  123. See how much I love you.

  124. The Lord Jesus, because he loves his people,

  125. here's the first thing,

  126. he tells us off.

  127. The Lord Jesus telling me off

  128. is a proof of his love for me.

  129. Have you ever had a verbal dressing down by someone

  130. for something you've done wrong?

  131. Have you ever been rightly rebuked

  132. in such a way that you've been ashamed of the action

  133. that you're being told off for?

  134. Well, that's actually what's meant by this word rebuke.

  135. It carries the idea of putting someone

  136. who has done something wrong to shame.

  137. It's the idea of a telling off

  138. that brings conviction of guilt to the person rebuked.

  139. It's the same word translated rebuke here

  140. that is used by our Lord Jesus in John 16

  141. when he speaks of the convicting work of the Holy Spirit.

  142. And he said that the work of the Spirit

  143. is to prove the world to be in the wrong

  144. about sin, righteousness, and judgment.

  145. That's what the Lord Jesus was doing

  146. to the church at Laodicea in Revelation 3.

  147. It's what he continues to do for us

  148. as this message is read.

  149. Jesus exposes sin

  150. in a way designed to bring conviction of guilt and shame.

  151. And in doing so, says our Lord Jesus,

  152. I am acting in love towards you.

  153. It's those whom I love that I rebuke.

  154. This is real love.

  155. This is the unique love of God

  156. that is always for the good of the other.

  157. This is true tender affection,

  158. a tender affection that doesn't ignore sin.

  159. A love that doesn't sweep sin under the carpet

  160. as if it isn't important.

  161. That doesn't treat sin as something

  162. that doesn't really matter.

  163. No, the love that rebukes

  164. is the love that knows the serious consequences

  165. of rebellion against God

  166. and therefore tells off

  167. and warns.

  168. And will you notice two things

  169. about the loving rebuke of the Lord Jesus?

  170. First of all,

  171. it's always accurate.

  172. Now that can't be said

  173. when we rebuke others, can it?

  174. My wife Sandra and I and Jen

  175. were at a camp this week

  176. called Contagious for Young People.

  177. It was great fun, wasn't it, Jen?

  178. But I'm reminded of another camp

  179. I used to help on.

  180. And during this camp,

  181. on two occasions,

  182. I was aware of one of the older campers

  183. being really unkind

  184. to one of the younger campers.

  185. And when I saw it happening

  186. a third occasion,

  187. I kind of stepped in

  188. and boy, did I give this older camper

  189. a telling off.

  190. But I discovered later

  191. that on the third occasion,

  192. I jumped to the wrong conclusion.

  193. On that third occasion,

  194. the camper wasn't being unkind.

  195. He was actually trying to be helpful

  196. to the younger camper.

  197. My rebuke was inaccurate,

  198. unjustified.

  199. I remember I had to go and apologize

  200. to this young camper.

  201. Our Lord Jesus

  202. never has to apologize

  203. for his rebukes.

  204. His rebukes are always spot on.

  205. Look back to verse 14.

  206. We discover why.

  207. It's because of who he is.

  208. He says there,

  209. these are the words of the Amen,

  210. the faithful and true witness,

  211. the ruler of God's creation.

  212. In other words,

  213. Jesus is the one who sees everything.

  214. And if he says something about us,

  215. well, it's reliable,

  216. it's precise.

  217. So if he rebukes me this morning

  218. for half-heartedness

  219. or self-sufficiency,

  220. his rebuke is accurate

  221. and justified,

  222. whatever protestations

  223. I may make.

  224. The second thing to notice

  225. about his rebuke

  226. is that his rebuke

  227. is what every believer needs

  228. all the time.

  229. Look again at verse 19.

  230. Those whom I love,

  231. I rebuke.

  232. Jesus doesn't say,

  233. those whom I love,

  234. I may need to rebuke.

  235. He doesn't say,

  236. those whom I love,

  237. I occasionally rebuke.

  238. No,

  239. those whom the Lord Jesus loves

  240. are those like me

  241. who need to be rebuked

  242. because those who he loves

  243. are sinners.

  244. We may be saved sinners.

  245. We may be justified sinners.

  246. We are because of his great love for us,

  247. but we are also ongoing sinners.

  248. Why this morning

  249. did we start our service

  250. with a prayer of confession?

  251. Because we muck up.

  252. We regularly fall into sins

  253. like the sins of half-heartedness

  254. and self-sufficiency.

  255. I was asked this week

  256. at this camp

  257. in an interview

  258. about what it's like

  259. living as a follower of Jesus.

  260. And I said,

  261. well,

  262. I need to be told I muck up,

  263. which is what the Lord Jesus does.

  264. We receive his rebuke

  265. as we expose ourselves

  266. to the sword of the Spirit,

  267. his words.

  268. The scriptures,

  269. do you remember

  270. how they're designed?

  271. They're designed to teach us

  272. and to rebuke us,

  273. to tell us off,

  274. along with correcting

  275. and training us.

  276. So actually,

  277. every time we read God's word

  278. or hear it read or preached,

  279. it's right to be praying

  280. something like this,

  281. Lord Jesus,

  282. you love me.

  283. Lord Jesus,

  284. you're the amen,

  285. the faithful and true witness.

  286. You see every nook and cranny

  287. of my life.

  288. Lord Jesus,

  289. you're the ruler

  290. of God's creation.

  291. Lord Jesus,

  292. please in your love

  293. rebuke me.

  294. Show me where I'm grieving you.

  295. Show me where my behavior

  296. is repulsive to you.

  297. Show me where my thinking,

  298. my speaking,

  299. my actions are out of kilter

  300. with your will for me.

  301. Lord Jesus,

  302. because you love me,

  303. please tell me off

  304. where I need to be told off.

  305. I don't know about you,

  306. but I don't like being told off.

  307. I resent it when my wife

  308. tells me off.

  309. We rebel against being convicted

  310. and made to feel ashamed.

  311. But when that's our response,

  312. we miss a wonderful proof

  313. of the love of Jesus for us

  314. as his blood-bought people.

  315. In love,

  316. he rebukes us.

  317. Why?

  318. Because he wants to change us.

  319. He wants to change us

  320. for our good

  321. and for his glory.

  322. Which leads to the second proof

  323. these verses give

  324. of how much

  325. the Lord Jesus loves us.

  326. He loves his people,

  327. he tells them of.

  328. Second,

  329. he trains us up.

  330. Look at the verse again.

  331. Those whom I love,

  332. I rebuke and discipline.

  333. Now,

  334. like the word rebuke,

  335. discipline is one of those words

  336. that perhaps we hear

  337. and we think negatively about it.

  338. Discipline is actually

  339. a really positive word.

  340. Behind it's the idea

  341. of training and education,

  342. of correcting what is wrong

  343. with a view to putting it right.

  344. I don't know if you remember

  345. your school days.

  346. I remember Miss Simpson.

  347. She was scary

  348. when you were a 10-year-old.

  349. You didn't misbehave

  350. in Miss Simpson's class

  351. and actually you could smell her

  352. because of her perfume

  353. kind of 10, you know,

  354. before she arrived at the church

  355. and then it hung around the class

  356. as she left.

  357. She knew how to control us.

  358. But I have reasons

  359. to be grateful for Miss Simpson

  360. because she noticed

  361. that when I held my pen

  362. on my pencil,

  363. I was doing it

  364. in a really weird way,

  365. which meant I had

  366. terrible handwriting.

  367. And she took steps

  368. to correct the way

  369. I held my pencil.

  370. Now I can tell you

  371. as a 10-year-old,

  372. I wasn't happy

  373. with her correction.

  374. Look, I was comfortable

  375. with the way

  376. I held my pencil.

  377. The way she told me

  378. to do it initially

  379. was uncomfortable.

  380. But I still remember,

  381. I can visualize it now.

  382. Me sitting in a corner

  383. of the class

  384. being told to write out

  385. the same thing

  386. over and over again

  387. with her watching me

  388. to make sure

  389. I kept my pencil

  390. in the right way

  391. of my fingers.

  392. What she disciplined

  393. to me

  394. became natural

  395. to me.

  396. I'm actually

  397. really grateful

  398. she did that.

  399. and in love,

  400. the Lord Jesus

  401. disciplines us.

  402. He takes steps

  403. to correct us

  404. where we're going wrong

  405. that we might conform

  406. to his good,

  407. pleasing,

  408. and perfect ways.

  409. It's what Paul says

  410. in Titus 2

  411. when he describes

  412. the grace of God

  413. as teaching us

  414. to say no

  415. to ungodliness

  416. and worldly passions

  417. and to live

  418. self-controlled,

  419. godly,

  420. and upright lives

  421. in this present age

  422. as we wait

  423. for the return

  424. of the Lord Jesus.

  425. Those the Lord loves.

  426. He disciplines.

  427. You may ask,

  428. well,

  429. how does he do it?

  430. Well,

  431. he does it in many ways.

  432. He does it

  433. through his word

  434. which rebukes

  435. and corrects us

  436. that we might be

  437. trained in righteousness.

  438. He does it

  439. through others

  440. whom he sets

  441. over us

  442. in the Lord

  443. to teach us

  444. his ways

  445. by word and example.

  446. That's one of the reasons

  447. he gives churches

  448. pastors.

  449. As the word of God

  450. dwells in believers,

  451. he uses us

  452. to admonish each other

  453. and train each other.

  454. And as I look back

  455. over my life today,

  456. boy,

  457. am I grateful

  458. for those

  459. the Lord has given me

  460. who have

  461. disciplined me

  462. and trained me

  463. in godliness.

  464. And he also does it

  465. through the hardships

  466. and trials

  467. of life.

  468. Now,

  469. I stand here

  470. as a visitor.

  471. I know some of you.

  472. But I don't know

  473. what's going on

  474. in your life

  475. at the moment.

  476. There are many mysteries

  477. about suffering.

  478. But the Bible

  479. teaches that

  480. no suffering

  481. is senseless.

  482. No pain

  483. is pointless.

  484. No adversity

  485. is absurd

  486. or meaningless.

  487. Every heartache

  488. has a divine purpose.

  489. Not least

  490. to cause us

  491. to abandon

  492. our self-sufficiency

  493. that we might rely

  494. more

  495. more

  496. on the Lord Jesus.

  497. That's actually

  498. a truth

  499. taught throughout

  500. Scripture.

  501. Psalm 119,

  502. David writes,

  503. before I was afflicted,

  504. I went astray,

  505. but now I obey

  506. your words.

  507. He then goes on

  508. to say,

  509. it was good

  510. for me

  511. to be afflicted

  512. that I might learn,

  513. that I might be

  514. disciplined

  515. in your decrees,

  516. in what you want

  517. me to do.

  518. In 1 Corinthians,

  519. in 2 Corinthians 1,

  520. sorry,

  521. the Apostle Paul

  522. gives his testimony

  523. about a situation

  524. in which he

  525. and his companions,

  526. he says,

  527. we were under

  528. great pressure.

  529. It was far beyond

  530. our ability

  531. to endure it.

  532. He says,

  533. in our hearts

  534. we felt the sentence

  535. of death.

  536. Look,

  537. it was a pretty

  538. serious situation,

  539. whatever it was.

  540. And then he says this,

  541. but this happened

  542. so that we might

  543. not rely on ourselves,

  544. but on God

  545. who raises

  546. the dead.

  547. If you want to read

  548. something else

  549. later today,

  550. Hebrews 12

  551. says that the Lord's

  552. disciplining of us

  553. through the hardships

  554. of life

  555. is part of his training

  556. of us

  557. in the ongoing battle

  558. that we have

  559. with sin.

  560. when I was a teenager,

  561. I was given a book

  562. which I didn't read

  563. until I was in my 20s.

  564. I was given it

  565. for winning

  566. a table tennis competition

  567. at a youth weekend away.

  568. So that was a long time ago,

  569. right?

  570. That was probably,

  571. how old am I now?

  572. 62.

  573. I was probably about 14

  574. at the time.

  575. You can do the maths for me.

  576. I can't work it out.

  577. Anyway,

  578. it was a long time ago.

  579. But in this book,

  580. Knowing God

  581. by J.I. Packer,

  582. he says this.

  583. He says,

  584. God spends much

  585. of his time

  586. bringing home to us

  587. that we are weak,

  588. both mentally

  589. and morally,

  590. and dare not

  591. trust ourselves

  592. to find

  593. or follow

  594. the right road.

  595. He goes on.

  596. When we walk

  597. along a clear road

  598. feeling fine,

  599. and someone

  600. takes our arm

  601. to help us,

  602. as lightly or not,

  603. we will impatiently

  604. shake them off.

  605. I don't need you.

  606. I'm all right.

  607. But when we're caught

  608. in rough country

  609. in the dark

  610. with a storm

  611. getting up

  612. and we're exhausted,

  613. when in that situation

  614. someone takes

  615. our arm

  616. to help us,

  617. we thankfully

  618. lean on them.

  619. Packer says,

  620. and God

  621. wants us

  622. to feel

  623. that our way

  624. through life

  625. is rough

  626. and perplexing

  627. so that we may

  628. learn,

  629. so that we may

  630. be trained

  631. to thankfully

  632. lean on him.

  633. He takes

  634. step

  635. to drive

  636. out of us

  637. self-confidence

  638. that instead

  639. we might

  640. trust

  641. in him.

  642. The truth

  643. that the Lord

  644. disciplines

  645. those he loves

  646. is a truth

  647. every believer

  648. needs to hold

  649. on to

  650. in every

  651. time

  652. of difficulty.

  653. Smiley!

  654. See how much

  655. I love you,

  656. says the Lord

  657. to his people

  658. Laodicea.

  659. I love you

  660. enough to

  661. discipline you,

  662. to wake you up

  663. from your

  664. half-heartedness,

  665. to wake you up

  666. from your

  667. self-sufficiency

  668. mercy,

  669. that you

  670. might trust

  671. me wholly,

  672. that you

  673. might be

  674. wholly

  675. dependent

  676. on me.

  677. Are you

  678. still with

  679. me?

  680. See how much

  681. the Lord

  682. loves you?

  683. Us,

  684. tells us

  685. off,

  686. trains us

  687. up,

  688. and thirdly,

  689. he keeps

  690. knocking at

  691. the door.

  692. Verse 20.

  693. It's one of the

  694. most well-known

  695. verses in the

  696. Bible,

  697. but we

  698. often forget

  699. that its

  700. application

  701. is first

  702. to Christians,

  703. not non-Christians.

  704. It's to

  705. Christian people

  706. that the

  707. Lord Jesus

  708. says,

  709. here I am,

  710. I stand at

  711. the door

  712. and knock.

  713. If anyone

  714. hears my

  715. voice and

  716. opens the

  717. door,

  718. I will come

  719. in and eat

  720. with that

  721. person,

  722. and they

  723. with me.

  724. Have you

  725. ever been

  726. shut out?

  727. Knocking at

  728. a door,

  729. knowing someone's

  730. inside,

  731. but not

  732. responding,

  733. knowing that

  734. someone's

  735. inside,

  736. but they're

  737. not answering,

  738. they're not

  739. willing to

  740. open the

  741. door.

  742. Despite

  743. their many

  744. failures,

  745. the whole

  746. message of

  747. the Lord

  748. Jesus to

  749. that church

  750. at Laodicea

  751. was him

  752. knocking

  753. at their

  754. door.

  755. I was

  756. away this

  757. week at

  758. a camp.

  759. I prepared

  760. what I've

  761. done this

  762. morning before

  763. I went to

  764. camp,

  765. but during

  766. the week,

  767. a very old

  768. friend of

  769. mine who

  770. read the

  771. Bible with

  772. me in

  773. my 30s,

  774. he sent

  775. me a

  776. WhatsApp.

  777. He didn't

  778. know I

  779. was preaching

  780. on this

  781. verse.

  782. Can I

  783. read his

  784. WhatsApp to

  785. you?

  786. It simply

  787. said,

  788. on a hotel

  789. door room

  790. was a

  791. notice.

  792. On one

  793. side it

  794. said,

  795. do not

  796. disturb.

  797. On the

  798. other side

  799. it said,

  800. I am in

  801. an awful

  802. mess,

  803. please come

  804. in and

  805. sort me

  806. out.

  807. Then my

  808. friend wrote,

  809. here I

  810. am, I

  811. stand at

  812. the door

  813. and knock.

  814. Why should

  815. he,

  816. Jesus,

  817. ever wish

  818. to gain

  819. access to

  820. such a

  821. pit of

  822. foulness as

  823. me?

  824. Jesus

  825. knocks on

  826. the door

  827. of Christians

  828. who actually

  829. are a bit

  830. of a mess.

  831. That's what

  832. he was doing

  833. with the

  834. church of

  835. Odysseus.

  836. His loving

  837. knock is a

  838. persistent

  839. knock.

  840. He says

  841. he's knocking

  842. again and

  843. again and

  844. again.

  845. He wants

  846. to come

  847. in.

  848. And it's a

  849. promising

  850. knock for

  851. he promises

  852. amazing grace

  853. to anyone who

  854. will open

  855. the door and

  856. say,

  857. Jesus,

  858. please come

  859. in.

  860. Look at

  861. verse 20.

  862. The word

  863. for eat

  864. there was

  865. the word

  866. used for

  867. the main

  868. meal of

  869. the day,

  870. a leisurely

  871. affair,

  872. not a

  873. hurried

  874. snack.

  875. The idea

  876. is of an

  877. occasion which

  878. allowed for

  879. intimate

  880. conversation

  881. between

  882. close

  883. friends.

  884. And that's

  885. what the

  886. Lord Jesus

  887. desires with

  888. those he

  889. loves.

  890. Why does

  891. he rebuke

  892. us?

  893. Why does

  894. he discipline

  895. us?

  896. Because

  897. actually he

  898. wants to

  899. share with

  900. those he

  901. loves in

  902. intimate

  903. friendship.

  904. He wants

  905. those he

  906. loves to

  907. welcome him

  908. into every

  909. part of

  910. their life,

  911. to share

  912. every part

  913. of life

  914. with him.

  915. And in

  916. love,

  917. he tires

  918. not of

  919. knocking on

  920. the door,

  921. even of

  922. those who

  923. have become

  924. half-hearted

  925. in their

  926. devotion,

  927. even those

  928. who have

  929. started to

  930. live as

  931. though they're

  932. not totally

  933. dependent

  934. upon him.

  935. half-hearted.

  936. Now I

  937. don't know

  938. you.

  939. But perhaps

  940. some of

  941. us here

  942. are half-hearted.

  943. Perhaps

  944. some of us

  945. here have

  946. become

  947. complacent

  948. and self-sufficient.

  949. Perhaps

  950. the reality

  951. is that we

  952. need to

  953. hear the

  954. same

  955. rebuke

  956. our loving

  957. Lord Jesus

  958. gave to

  959. that

  960. Laodicean

  961. church.

  962. Perhaps

  963. we've lost

  964. sight of

  965. our need

  966. for his

  967. rebuke.

  968. We've

  969. forgotten

  970. that we're

  971. sinners who

  972. need that

  973. rebuke.

  974. Perhaps

  975. we've

  976. become lazy

  977. in the

  978. disciplines of

  979. the Christian

  980. life and

  981. thought,

  982. no,

  983. I'm all

  984. right,

  985. I'm

  986. saved.

  987. I can

  988. just stay

  989. as I am

  990. until I

  991. get to

  992. heaven.

  993. perhaps we

  994. need to

  995. be those

  996. who learn

  997. to respond

  998. to his

  999. loving

  1000. knock on

  1001. the door

  1002. of our

  1003. lives.

  1004. You see,

  1005. look at

  1006. verse 13

  1007. again.

  1008. It tells

  1009. us how

  1010. to respond.

  1011. Verse 19,

  1012. sorry.

  1013. Those whom

  1014. I love,

  1015. I rebuke

  1016. and discipline

  1017. so,

  1018. be earnest

  1019. and repent.

  1020. We live

  1021. in a

  1022. generation

  1023. where it's

  1024. okay to

  1025. be earnest

  1026. and zealous

  1027. about your

  1028. career,

  1029. to be

  1030. earnest or

  1031. zealous

  1032. about your

  1033. family or

  1034. your hobbies,

  1035. but few

  1036. are willing

  1037. to be seen

  1038. as zealous

  1039. for the

  1040. Lord Jesus.

  1041. But the

  1042. one who

  1043. loves us

  1044. most says

  1045. that this

  1046. is what we

  1047. need to

  1048. be in

  1049. response to

  1050. his rebuke

  1051. and discipline.

  1052. We should

  1053. earnestly

  1054. desire it.

  1055. We should

  1056. earnestly

  1057. confess our

  1058. sins when

  1059. he reveals

  1060. them to

  1061. us,

  1062. earnestly

  1063. turn from

  1064. them,

  1065. seeking

  1066. instead to

  1067. live in

  1068. wholehearted

  1069. devotion and

  1070. total dependence

  1071. on him.

  1072. We should

  1073. earnestly

  1074. open the

  1075. door afresh

  1076. to him

  1077. each day,

  1078. saying,

  1079. Lord Jesus,

  1080. please share

  1081. your whole

  1082. life with

  1083. me.

  1084. Please

  1085. come in

  1086. and control

  1087. every nook

  1088. and cranny,

  1089. shape,

  1090. mold me

  1091. according

  1092. to your

  1093. will.

  1094. At this

  1095. camp we were

  1096. at last

  1097. week,

  1098. which I

  1099. really enjoyed,

  1100. it was

  1101. really great,

  1102. I was

  1103. with

  1104. Josiah's

  1105. dad,

  1106. which made

  1107. it extra

  1108. special.

  1109. But I

  1110. was asked

  1111. in an

  1112. interview,

  1113. how do you

  1114. keep going?

  1115. As a

  1116. Christian,

  1117. it's a good

  1118. question,

  1119. and there's

  1120. 200 young

  1121. people and

  1122. they were

  1123. all looking

  1124. at me,

  1125. they were

  1126. all really

  1127. eager,

  1128. God gave

  1129. us a

  1130. great week.

  1131. I was

  1132. simply

  1133. asked,

  1134. how do you

  1135. keep going

  1136. as a

  1137. Christian?

  1138. And the

  1139. answer I

  1140. gave was

  1141. this,

  1142. I said

  1143. only by

  1144. having

  1145. breakfast

  1146. every morning

  1147. with Jesus.

  1148. See,

  1149. do you

  1150. remember what

  1151. happened on

  1152. the Sunday

  1153. a week after

  1154. Easter day,

  1155. do you

  1156. remember?

  1157. When the

  1158. disciples had

  1159. gone back to

  1160. fishing on

  1161. the Sea of

  1162. Galilee,

  1163. and Jesus

  1164. appears on

  1165. the shore,

  1166. and there's a

  1167. miraculous catch

  1168. of fish,

  1169. do you

  1170. know what

  1171. Jesus shouts

  1172. to the

  1173. disciples as

  1174. they make

  1175. their way

  1176. to shore?

  1177. He says,

  1178. come and

  1179. have breakfast

  1180. with me.

  1181. And I

  1182. found it

  1183. really helpful

  1184. to put that

  1185. verse next

  1186. to Revelation

  1187. 3.20,

  1188. and to

  1189. recognize that

  1190. every morning

  1191. when I get

  1192. up,

  1193. it's as if

  1194. the Lord

  1195. Jesus for

  1196. that day

  1197. is knocking

  1198. on the

  1199. door of

  1200. my heart.

  1201. saying,

  1202. here I

  1203. am,

  1204. Johnny,

  1205. I stand

  1206. at the

  1207. door and

  1208. knock,

  1209. I want

  1210. to have

  1211. breakfast

  1212. with you,

  1213. and then

  1214. I want

  1215. to walk

  1216. with you

  1217. through

  1218. this day.

  1219. And the

  1220. advice I

  1221. gave to

  1222. the young

  1223. people was

  1224. the advice

  1225. I was

  1226. given as

  1227. a teenager

  1228. at camp.

  1229. Before you

  1230. start the

  1231. day,

  1232. take time

  1233. alone to

  1234. pray and

  1235. feed upon

  1236. God's

  1237. word to

  1238. know his

  1239. way,

  1240. so walk

  1241. the way

  1242. with him,

  1243. so start

  1244. the day

  1245. with him

  1246. and walk

  1247. the way

  1248. with him

  1249. and come

  1250. to evening

  1251. time with

  1252. praise to

  1253. him.

  1254. I told

  1255. these young

  1256. people,

  1257. I remember

  1258. as a

  1259. teenager

  1260. sitting in

  1261. church,

  1262. and there

  1263. was a

  1264. visiting

  1265. preacher,

  1266. he was

  1267. an old

  1268. man,

  1269. and he

  1270. told how

  1271. he'd become

  1272. a Christian

  1273. when he

  1274. was a

  1275. coal miner,

  1276. and he'd

  1277. gone down

  1278. the mines

  1279. at age

  1280. 15,

  1281. because that's

  1282. when you

  1283. could leave

  1284. school in

  1285. those days.

  1286. And he

  1287. said he

  1288. loved the

  1289. Lord Jesus

  1290. so much,

  1291. he had to

  1292. get up at

  1293. silly o'clock

  1294. every morning

  1295. to go down

  1296. the coal

  1297. mine,

  1298. and he

  1299. described how

  1300. every morning

  1301. he had breakfast

  1302. with Jesus.

  1303. He got up,

  1304. he got his

  1305. Weetabix in

  1306. his bowl,

  1307. he put the

  1308. milk in the

  1309. bowl,

  1310. he propped

  1311. his Bible

  1312. against the

  1313. milk bottle,

  1314. and he read

  1315. his Bible

  1316. before he went

  1317. down the

  1318. coal mine.

  1319. That's having

  1320. breakfast with

  1321. Jesus,

  1322. isn't it?

  1323. That's responding

  1324. to his

  1325. knock.

  1326. That's saying,

  1327. Lord Jesus,

  1328. I'm still a

  1329. sinner,

  1330. I need your

  1331. rebuke.

  1332. Lord Jesus,

  1333. I'm someone

  1334. who needs to

  1335. be trained

  1336. in godliness.

  1337. Lord Jesus,

  1338. I want to

  1339. share my

  1340. life with

  1341. you.

  1342. Lord Jesus,

  1343. thank you that

  1344. you love me

  1345. that much,

  1346. that you

  1347. tell me off,

  1348. you train me

  1349. up,

  1350. and you

  1351. knock on

  1352. the door

  1353. of my

  1354. life,

  1355. and you

  1356. keep

  1357. knocking.

  1358. Lord Jesus,

  1359. I want my

  1360. life to be

  1361. about a

  1362. dependent

  1363. relationship

  1364. upon you

  1365. where nothing

  1366. is more

  1367. important than

  1368. having that

  1369. close,

  1370. intimate

  1371. friendship

  1372. with you.

  1373. Do you

  1374. believe God

  1375. loves you

  1376. today?

  1377. Do you

  1378. believe Jesus

  1379. loves you?

  1380. Think back

  1381. over your

  1382. life as a

  1383. Christian so

  1384. far, if

  1385. you're a

  1386. Christian.

  1387. Aren't you

  1388. grateful for

  1389. the way he's

  1390. told you

  1391. off,

  1392. trained you

  1393. up,

  1394. and that he's

  1395. never stopped

  1396. knocking on

  1397. the door

  1398. of your

  1399. life.

  1400. If you're

  1401. not yet a

  1402. believer in

  1403. the Lord

  1404. Jesus,

  1405. well, these

  1406. verses do

  1407. have a

  1408. message for

  1409. you.

  1410. Becoming a

  1411. Christian starts

  1412. with discovering

  1413. that we all

  1414. need this

  1415. loving rebuke

  1416. of the Lord

  1417. Jesus,

  1418. because we're

  1419. all sinners.

  1420. It's what

  1421. those who

  1422. have become

  1423. Christians

  1424. experience as

  1425. they've started

  1426. to listen

  1427. to God's

  1428. words.

  1429. becoming a

  1430. Christian involves

  1431. hearing the

  1432. call of

  1433. Jesus to

  1434. be earnest

  1435. and to

  1436. repent.

  1437. To repent

  1438. means to

  1439. run from

  1440. sin towards

  1441. God.

  1442. And as we

  1443. repent and

  1444. turn to

  1445. Jesus, what

  1446. do we

  1447. discover?

  1448. We discover

  1449. that he

  1450. says, receive

  1451. me into

  1452. your life.

  1453. Let me

  1454. in.

  1455. He says,

  1456. trust the

  1457. amazing love

  1458. that I have

  1459. for you

  1460. because I

  1461. died on the

  1462. cross bearing

  1463. the punishment

  1464. sinners like

  1465. you deserve.

  1466. Receive me

  1467. in, the one

  1468. who loves you

  1469. more than

  1470. anyone else

  1471. in the

  1472. universe.

  1473. And he

  1474. says, as

  1475. you receive

  1476. me, you'll

  1477. then discover

  1478. that the rest

  1479. of your life

  1480. is made up

  1481. experiencing

  1482. his love,

  1483. which includes

  1484. him telling

  1485. us off,

  1486. training us

  1487. up, and

  1488. him keep

  1489. on knocking

  1490. on the

  1491. door of

  1492. our lives.

  1493. Smiley.

  1494. Perhaps some

  1495. husband and

  1496. wives will

  1497. start writing

  1498. Smiley

  1499. everywhere, or

  1500. engage couples.

  1501. But more

  1502. important, see

  1503. how much our

  1504. saviour, the

  1505. Lord Jesus,

  1506. loves us.

  1507. Let's pray.

  1508. Lord Jesus

  1509. Christ, you

  1510. who are the

  1511. faithful and

  1512. true witness,

  1513. the ruler of

  1514. creation, we

  1515. can't hide

  1516. anything from

  1517. you.

  1518. You know

  1519. everything about

  1520. us, every

  1521. intimate detail.

  1522. You know

  1523. however we

  1524. look in

  1525. church this

  1526. morning, you

  1527. know what's

  1528. going on in

  1529. our hearts.

  1530. You know

  1531. whether we've

  1532. drifted off

  1533. into some

  1534. kind of

  1535. self-complacency

  1536. or self-sufficiency.

  1537. Lord Jesus, we

  1538. thank you for

  1539. your amazing

  1540. love for us.

  1541. Thank you that

  1542. it's proved

  1543. ultimately at the

  1544. cross where you

  1545. died in our

  1546. place.

  1547. But thank you

  1548. for your

  1549. ongoing love

  1550. that tells us

  1551. off, trains

  1552. us up, and

  1553. keeps knocking

  1554. on the door

  1555. of our lives.

  1556. Lord Jesus,

  1557. by your

  1558. spirit, help

  1559. us to be

  1560. earnest and

  1561. to repent.

  1562. May we have

  1563. breakfast with

  1564. you each day.

  1565. May we walk

  1566. through the

  1567. day enjoying

  1568. your intimate

  1569. friendship.

  1570. Please don't

  1571. give up on us

  1572. in your

  1573. love.

  1574. And we

  1575. ask these

  1576. things for

  1577. your namesake.

  1578. Amen.
