  1. So we are in 2 Samuel chapter 14 this morning, 2 Samuel chapter 14.

2 Samuel 14 chapter mention 2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  2. Before I read the passage for us, let me just give a few words of introduction.

  3. What you need to know if you're new this morning or you're visiting or here for the first time,

  4. let me tell you that we are partway through a series in the book of 2 Samuel.

  5. We had a pause for the summer holidays and we are now back in 2 Samuel.

  6. So I haven't just picked 2 Samuel chapter 14 at random,

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  7. what we try and do as a church is work our way through the Bible together,

  8. taking each passage as it comes.

  9. Our conviction is that as the Bible is opened and explained,

  10. we experience God speaking to us because this is not just human words.

  11. This is not just what people have thought.

  12. This is what God himself has thought.

  13. And so our pattern as a church is just to take book by book and work our way through chapter by chapter.

  14. That's the sort of the common diet, if you like, on a Sunday morning.

  15. But before I read this passage, and in case you're new to it,

  16. it might just be helpful for me to give you a few words of introduction.

  17. 2 Samuel is the record of King David, King of Israel.

  18. You might have heard of King David, Israel's most famous king.

  19. And 2 Samuel is the sort of the account about how David became king,

  20. what happened while he was king, and what it was like to live in his kingdom.

  21. There's a historical record of that.

  22. But it's a mistake to think that 2 Samuel is just history.

  23. You know, this is not written so that you could pass a GCSE history exam.

  24. You know when you had to remember all the dates for GCSE history or that sort of thing?

  25. And it's not that. It's not written so that you might just remember what happened in a kind of,

  26. these are important facts for you to know.

  27. No, it's not that.

  28. It's better to think that 2 Samuel, he's a preacher.

  29. And what he's doing is he's taking these historical accounts of the life of David,

  30. and he's preaching them to you, to me,

  31. that we might learn not just about King David and life in his kingdom,

  32. but that we might learn about King David's God and life in his kingdom.

  33. So 2 Samuel is a preacher. He's got a message for us to hear.

  34. So with that in mind, I'm going to read to you 2 Samuel chapter 14.

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  35. I'm going to read the whole chapter.

  36. I'm going to try and read it a balance between not being too fast,

  37. but not so slow that we're still reading at lunchtime.

  38. So here we go, 2 Samuel chapter 14.

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  39. Joab, son of Zariah, knew that the king's heart longed for Absalom.

  40. So Joab sent someone to Tekoa and had a wise woman brought from there.

  41. He said to her, pretend you are in mourning.

  42. Dress in mourning clothes and don't use any cosmetic lotions.

  43. Act like a woman who has spent many days grieving for the dead.

  44. Then go to the king and speak these words to him.

  45. Joab put the words in her mouth.

  46. When the woman from Tekoa went to the king,

  47. she fell with her face to the ground to pay him honour.

  48. And she said, help me, your majesty.

  49. The king asked her, what's troubling you?

  50. She said, I am a widow.

  51. My husband is dead.

  52. I, your servant, had two sons.

  53. They got into a fight with each other in the field

  54. and no one was there to separate them.

  55. One struck the other and killed him.

  56. Now the whole clan has risen up against your servant.

  57. They say, hand over the one who struck his brother down

  58. so that we may put him to death for the life of his brother whom he killed.

  59. Then we will get rid of the heir as well.

  60. They would put out the only burning coal I have left,

  61. leaving my, sorry, leaving my husband neither name nor descendant on the face of the earth.

  62. The king said to the woman, go home and I will issue an order on your behalf.

  63. But the woman from Tekoa said to him,

  64. let my lord the king pardon me and my family

  65. and let the king and his throne be without guilt.

  66. The king replied, if anyone, if anyone says anything to you,

  67. bring them to me and they will not bother you again.

  68. She said,

  69. Then let the king invoke the lord his god to prevent the avenger of blood from adding to the destruction

  70. so that my son shall not be destroyed.

  71. As surely as the lord lives, he said, not one hair of your son's head will fall to the ground.

  72. Then the woman said,

  73. Let your servant speak a word to my lord the king.

  74. Speak, he replied.

  75. The woman said,

  76. Why then have you devised a thing like this against the people of God?

  77. When the king says this, does he not convict himself?

  78. For the king has not brought back his banished son.

  79. Like water spilled on the ground which cannot be recovered, so we must die.

  80. But that is not what God desires.

  81. Rather, he devises ways so that a banished person does not remain banished from him.

  82. And now, I have come to say this to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid.

  83. Your servant thought, I will speak to the king.

  84. Perhaps he will grant his servant's request.

  85. Perhaps the king will agree to deliver his servant from the hand of men

  86. who is trying to cut off both me and my son from God's inheritance.

  87. Now your servant says,

  88. May the word of my lord the king secure my inheritance.

  89. For my lord the king is like an angel of God in discerning good and evil.

  90. May the lord your God be with you.

  91. And the king said to the woman,

  92. Do not keep from me the answer to what I am going to ask you.

  93. Let my lord the king speak, the woman said.

  94. The king asked,

  95. Isn't this the hand of Joab with you in all this?

  96. The woman answered,

  97. As surely as you live, my lord the king,

  98. no one can turn to the right or the left from anything.

  99. My lord the king says,

  100. Yes, it was your servant Joab who instructed me to do this

  101. and who put all these words into the mouth of your servant.

  102. Your servant Joab did this to change the present situation.

  103. My lord has wisdom like that of an angel of God.

  104. He knows everything that happens in the land.

  105. The king said to Joab,

  106. Very well, I will do it.

  107. Go, bring back the young man Absalom.

  108. Joab fell with his face to the ground to pay him honour

  109. and he blessed the king.

  110. Joab said,

  111. Today your servant knows that he has found favour in your eyes,

  112. my lord the king,

  113. because the king has granted his servant's request.

  114. Then Joab went to Geshurah and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.

  115. But the king said,

  116. He must go to his own house.

  117. He must not see my face.

  118. So Absalom went to his own house

  119. and did not see the face of the king.

  120. In all Israel,

  121. there was not a man so highly praised

  122. for his handsome appearance as Absalom.

  123. From the top of his head to the sole of his foot,

  124. there was no blemish in him.

  125. Whenever he cut the hair of his head,

  126. he used to cut his hair once a year

  127. because it became too heavy for him.

  128. He would weigh it

  129. and its weight was 200 shekels by the royal standard.

  130. Three sons and daughters were born to Absalom.

  131. His daughter's name was Tamar

  132. and she became a beautiful woman.

  133. Absalom lived for two years in Jerusalem

  134. without seeing the king's face.

  135. Then Absalom sent for Joab

  136. in order to send him to the king,

  137. but Joab refused to come to him.

  138. So he sent a second time,

  139. but he refused to come.

  140. Then he said to his servants,

  141. Look, Joab's field is next to mine

  142. and he has barley there.

  143. Go and set it on fire.

  144. So Absalom's servants set the field on fire.

  145. Then Joab did go to Absalom's house

  146. and he said to him,

  147. Why have your servants set my field on fire?

  148. Absalom said to Joab,

  149. Look, I sent word to you and said,

  150. Come here so that I can send you to the king

  151. to ask,

  152. Why have I come from Geshur?

  153. It would be better for me if I were still there.

  154. Now then, I want to see the king's face

  155. and if I am guilty of anything,

  156. let him put me to death.

  157. So Joab went to the king and told him this.

  158. Then the king summoned Absalom

  159. and he came in and bowed down

  160. with his face to the ground before the king

  161. and the king kissed Absalom.

  162. As we start this morning to look at that passage,

  163. let me ask you a question.

  164. The question I asked to the children earlier, really.

  165. If you've fallen out with somebody,

  166. what do you do?

  167. What do you do if you've fallen out with someone?

  168. You see, it's not uncommon, is it?

  169. Relationship problems exist wherever there are people.

  170. So what is it that you do

  171. when you've fallen out with others?

  172. When it's tense?

  173. Yes, when you can't look each other in the eye?

  174. When crosswords have been spoken

  175. and there's a barrier between you?

  176. What do you do if it's more serious than just that?

  177. What do you do if your husband or your wife

  178. has been unfaithful to you?

  179. What do you do if your parents neglected you

  180. or abused you?

  181. What do you do if you've been accused

  182. of something that you didn't do

  183. or treated unfairly at work and lost your job?

  184. What do you do if you've been racially abused

  185. or excluded because your face doesn't fit?

  186. What is it that you should do?

  187. What do you do?

  188. Now we know, don't we,

  189. those aren't hypothetical questions.

  190. I'm not asking those to say,

  191. listen, let's enter a pretend world

  192. where those kind of things happen.

  193. No, we live in a world

  194. where those things happen all the time.

  195. They happen to all of us, don't they?

  196. How do you fix problems like that?

  197. Well, in a way, that is the question

  198. behind 2 Samuel chapter 14.

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  199. In 2 Samuel chapter 14,

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  200. the background is a massive relational breakdown.

  201. It's a bad one.

  202. It's a relationship breakdown

  203. between a son and his father.

  204. And the backstory involves rape, murder, and neglect.

  205. So this is not kind of light stuff this morning.

  206. And 2 Samuel chapter 14 is an attempt

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  207. to fix the relationship breakdown

  208. between the son and his father,

  209. between Absalom and David.

  210. But what we'll discover as we go through it

  211. is that this attempt to fix it

  212. doesn't actually work.

  213. And it doesn't work

  214. because it's founded on flawed ideas,

  215. a faulty worldly wisdom,

  216. wisdom that can never actually address

  217. the big issue in the relationship breakdown.

  218. A worldly wisdom, if you like,

  219. that is massively popular,

  220. but ultimately doesn't fix anything.

  221. Now that's the background to the story.

  222. What I want to do

  223. before we kind of get into the detail of that

  224. is I want to retell you the story of 2 Samuel chapter 14.

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  225. Don't know if you're like me,

  226. but when you hear the Bible read,

  227. sometimes it's quite difficult to follow the story.

  228. So let me retell you the story of 2 Samuel chapter 14

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  229. so that we can get it in our minds what's going on.

  230. The relationship breakdown, as I said,

  231. is between Absalom and his father, David.

  232. So you may remember that Absalom has killed his brother,

  233. a guy called Amnon.

  234. He didn't kill Amnon without reason, though.

  235. Amnon had raped Absalom's sister,

  236. his own half-sister, Tamar.

  237. Absalom waited two years after that event

  238. to get his revenge on Amnon.

  239. He eventually killed him at this sheep-shearing party.

  240. He gathered all of his brothers together,

  241. said, hey, you know, I'm shearing the sheep,

  242. let's have a party.

  243. And it was really a false pretense

  244. to get Amnon in the room

  245. so that when he got him, he could kill him.

  246. And that's what he did.

  247. Following the murder,

  248. Absalom fled to his grandfather's house,

  249. his maternal grandfather's house,

  250. which was just over the northern border of Israel,

  251. where chapter 13, verse 38,

  252. tells you, just before our passage,

  253. that he was staying there for three years.

  254. Three years in exile.

  255. And verse one of our passage

  256. tells you this morning

  257. that Joab, who is the commander of David's army,

  258. his kind of right-hand man, if you like,

  259. Joab knows that David is still thinking

  260. about that event three years later.

  261. It's not that surprising

  262. when you think about it, is it?

  263. I think sort of relationship problems

  264. or difficulties are the most difficult thing

  265. to get out of your mind, aren't they?

  266. And David is still chewing over this heartbreak.

  267. It's not going to pass easily.

  268. I don't think you should read chapter 14, verse one,

  269. as seeing that David is full of sympathy,

  270. though, for Absalom.

  271. The word long is not actually there

  272. in verse one in the original.

  273. English translators have added it

  274. just to try and make the English flow a bit better.

  275. But the sense really is more

  276. that David is on Absalom.

  277. His heart is weighed down by him.

  278. He is thinking on him.

  279. David can't shake the sadness of Absalom.

  280. It's like a thing that he is carrying around,

  281. a relational pain that wakes him up at night,

  282. that is there with him in the morning,

  283. takes up that mental processing space,

  284. chewing it over and over.

  285. And because of that,

  286. Joab, as David's right-hand man,

  287. goes, well, I'm going to help out, David.

  288. I'm going to fix that problem for him.

  289. And to accomplish his plan,

  290. he takes a woman from Tekoa,

  291. a wise woman, you're told,

  292. to come and speak to the king.

  293. Now, Tekoa is south of Bethlehem.

  294. Bethlehem is south of Jerusalem.

  295. So it's kind of near enough for the woman

  296. to get to Jerusalem and speak to David,

  297. but it's far enough away

  298. so that her story could be made up

  299. and David wouldn't know about it.

  300. So this nameless woman comes and speaks to David.

  301. Now, this is not unusual, right?

  302. So David as the king would listen

  303. to the complex legal cases in the kingdom.

  304. If you had a simple case,

  305. you'd take it to the elders of your town,

  306. they would agree it for you.

  307. You know, I've parked my camel on a double yellow line.

  308. What are you going to do?

  309. Well, there's a ticket, right?

  310. That would be solved by them.

  311. But something more complicated,

  312. you had to take up the courts.

  313. And the highest court is the court of the king.

  314. And so this case is brought before David.

  315. It wasn't unusual for him to listen to complex cases.

  316. But this woman's story is particularly complicated.

  317. Her husband is dead.

  318. Her two sons have got into a fight

  319. and one of them has killed the other.

  320. Now, justice would demand that the murderer

  321. be put to death for his crime.

  322. That's what the leaders of her town

  323. were responsible for doing.

  324. And verse seven tells you that the whole clan

  325. have risen up against the woman

  326. in order to enact justice like that.

  327. But clearly then, if they did that,

  328. it would leave this woman in a perilous position

  329. because her husband's dead,

  330. one of her sons is dead.

  331. And if the other son is killed in justice

  332. for what he has done,

  333. it would lead her with nobody to provide for her,

  334. no protector, no heir, no family line.

  335. It would essentially leave her destitute.

  336. David listens to the woman's case

  337. and tells her in verse eight

  338. that essentially it's going to take some time

  339. to think about her case.

  340. So go home and wait for the verdict.

  341. Of course, though, there's no son, is there?

  342. She's not actually a desperate widow.

  343. She's there for something else.

  344. So she presses him further

  345. for an immediate answer in verse nine.

  346. So much so that David gives his verdict,

  347. telling her that her son should not die

  348. and that he has the protection of the king.

  349. He ends up repeating the point twice

  350. just to make it super clear to her.

  351. But by verse 12,

  352. David's answer is clearly not enough

  353. because actually it's not really

  354. why the woman is there, is it?

  355. The woman has a further point to make

  356. and reveals her true agenda.

  357. She says, you know,

  358. why if this is the case,

  359. if this is the answer you're giving me for this case,

  360. why is it that Absalom is still in exile

  361. for murdering his brother Amnon?

  362. Why won't you bring Absalom back from his banishment?

  363. Now, it's quite clever, really,

  364. when you think about it, isn't it?

  365. The way the story is set up is clever.

  366. It even, her story even sounds a bit like

  367. a story you might have heard in the Bible

  368. about Cain and Abel, right?

  369. When God didn't enact the death penalty

  370. against Cain for killing Abel,

  371. but instead put a mark on him

  372. so that no one would touch him.

  373. But however clever the story is,

  374. David sees right through her, doesn't he?

  375. He sees Joab pulling the strings in verse 19.

  376. Aha, I know why you're here, he says.

  377. This is Joab trying to fix

  378. the Absalom problem, isn't it?

  379. So much so that she says,

  380. oh yes, you have the wisdom of an angel

  381. in verse 20 to David.

  382. You really know what's going on

  383. in your kingdom, don't you?

  384. Before in verse 21,

  385. David then speaks to Joab

  386. and says, listen, okay,

  387. bring Absalom back to Jerusalem,

  388. but he must never see my face.

  389. He's not allowed to enter the palace.

  390. He mustn't come in here.

  391. He can go to his own home.

  392. So Joab brings Absalom back to Jerusalem

  393. and for a while,

  394. everything seems as though it's going okay,

  395. but not for long

  396. because Absalom is not happy

  397. about being in Jerusalem,

  398. but not being allowed to see David's face.

  399. So he calls Joab

  400. to tell him that he's not happy

  401. and Joab just buttons him

  402. on his mobile phone.

  403. I just ignore him.

  404. I don't ignore Absalom.

  405. So Absalom does what you do

  406. when anybody buttons you

  407. on their mobile phone.

  408. You set fire to his crops.

  409. Yeah, that's how you get his attention.

  410. So that's what he does.

  411. And Joab goes, hang on a minute.

  412. Why are you doing that?

  413. He says, well, I called you

  414. and you didn't answer.

  415. So he comes in and says,

  416. listen, I want to see David.

  417. If I don't get to see David's face,

  418. I might as well be in banishment.

  419. It's like banishment by any other name.

  420. And so Joab goes to David

  421. to see if Absalom

  422. can come into his presence,

  423. which he does at the end of the chapter

  424. as David kisses him

  425. and is seemingly at least reconciled

  426. with his oldest son

  427. and heir to the throne.

  428. Now that is the chapter in a nutshell.

  429. Now it might seem

  430. as you just glance through it like that,

  431. that Absalom appears at the end

  432. to be reunited with David.

  433. The family seems to be stable again.

  434. And perhaps that's what Joab thought.

  435. You know, perhaps Joab's

  436. patting himself on the back going,

  437. I'm the fixer.

  438. I have nailed this right now.

  439. And that's great.

  440. But actually, as you read the story

  441. more carefully,

  442. that is not what's happening at all.

  443. Instead, what you'll find in the story

  444. is it's hinging around this word wisdom.

  445. Okay?

  446. The woman from Tekoa,

  447. you're not given her name,

  448. but she's called a wise woman.

  449. David is called a man of wisdom

  450. in verse 20.

  451. But what it turns out

  452. is that there is in 2 Samuel chapter 14

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  453. a kind of fatally flawed wisdom,

  454. a worldly wisdom.

  455. And I want to try and show you that.

  456. Let me try and show you that

  457. in three ways.

  458. The first thing to see is this,

  459. that worldly wisdom,

  460. the wisdom of 2 Samuel 14

  461. uses feelings to deny truth.

  462. That's how you know

  463. that the wisdom here is not good.

  464. Now, if you've been here

  465. for the series on 2 Samuel,

  466. then the chapter might be

  467. sort of vaguely familiar.

  468. You know, someone standing

  469. in front of King David

  470. with a made-up story

  471. trying to change his mind.

  472. If you know the story

  473. of David and Bathsheba

  474. and the prophet Nathan

  475. coming to David

  476. to try and convict him of that sin,

  477. it might be familiar to you.

  478. That's in chapter 12.

  479. Nathan the prophet

  480. made up a story

  481. about a guy with a sheep

  482. that got killed by a rich man.

  483. If you don't know it,

  484. you can go and look at it

  485. in chapter 12.

  486. And the similarities are clear.

  487. Both stories are trying

  488. to pull on David's knowledge

  489. of the scriptures,

  490. trying to get him

  491. to come to a certain conclusion.

  492. Like I said before,

  493. here is the story

  494. of Cain and Abel

  495. in Genesis 4

  496. where there's a biblical precedent

  497. for not enacting

  498. capital punishment.

  499. But despite the similarity

  500. between those two occasions,

  501. actually there's a massive difference.

  502. You see,

  503. in chapter 12,

  504. David is full of sinful passion

  505. for this woman Bathsheba.

  506. He is lustfully desirous

  507. of this beautiful woman Bathsheba.

  508. He longs for her

  509. so much so that he takes her

  510. to himself.

  511. He sleeps with her

  512. and gets her pregnant

  513. and kills her husband.

  514. Right?

  515. And Nathan the prophet

  516. comes and tells that story

  517. to arouse David's conscience

  518. to what his feelings

  519. have led him to do

  520. which is wrong.

  521. And here in this story,

  522. it is the opposite way round,

  523. isn't it?

  524. Here in chapter 14,

  525. David's conscience

  526. is firmly settled

  527. against Absalom

  528. which is why he's still in exile.

  529. David in chapter 14

  530. has been doing

  531. the right thing.

  532. David knows

  533. that Absalom

  534. has done wrong

  535. and that this premeditated

  536. killing of Amnon

  537. was a short circuit

  538. of justice.

  539. Justice which David

  540. had failed to

  541. or been unwilling

  542. at least to enact.

  543. But still it was not

  544. to be taken on

  545. by Absalom.

  546. So for Absalom

  547. to be in exile

  548. was a fitting thing.

  549. So notice that

  550. the woman's story

  551. is trying to do

  552. the opposite

  553. of Nathan's story.

  554. The woman's story

  555. is trying to pull

  556. on David's feelings

  557. to make him do something

  558. which is wrong,

  559. untrue.

  560. The story of the sons

  561. is designed

  562. to make David

  563. pity Absalom

  564. and lead him

  565. to believe

  566. that exile

  567. is harsh or unfair.

  568. to think

  569. that maybe

  570. it would be okay

  571. just to let Absalom

  572. off

  573. even though it wasn't.

  574. See here's the

  575. twist of worldly wisdom.

  576. You know God's wisdom

  577. sends Nathan

  578. to stop a sinner

  579. in his tracks

  580. while worldly wisdom

  581. does the opposite

  582. of that.

  583. It seeks to

  584. short circuit justice

  585. when it feels

  586. a little harsh.

  587. You see one

  588. is an act

  589. of mercy

  590. and love.

  591. The other

  592. is an act

  593. of manipulation

  594. and self-interest.

  595. and that's

  596. the warning

  597. to you here.

  598. The warning

  599. is that there

  600. is a kind

  601. of wisdom

  602. in the world

  603. a worldly wisdom

  604. that simply

  605. cannot handle

  606. the truth.

  607. It can't.

  608. More specifically

  609. it can't handle

  610. the fact

  611. that the truth

  612. does not necessarily

  613. feel good

  614. all the time.

  615. Do you know

  616. what I mean?

  617. Here

  618. the truth

  619. of Absalom's exile

  620. did not feel

  621. good to David

  622. and so the worldly

  623. wisdom of human

  624. hearts seeks

  625. to change

  626. the truth

  627. in order to

  628. make it

  629. accommodate

  630. our feelings

  631. editing God's

  632. plans and God's

  633. truth accordingly.

  634. Now you don't

  635. need me to tell

  636. you now

  637. hopefully

  638. that that is

  639. exactly what

  640. the world

  641. is still doing

  642. isn't it?

  643. This is very

  644. contemporary.

  645. We live in a

  646. world of Joab's

  647. worldly wisdom

  648. don't we?

  649. We live in a

  650. world that loves

  651. to edit truth

  652. by feelings

  653. over and over

  654. and over

  655. and over again.

  656. Think about

  657. what Jesus says

  658. in John 14

  659. when he tells

  660. the disciples

  661. I am the way

  662. the truth

  663. and the life

  664. no one comes

  665. to the Father

  666. but by me.

  667. You know

  668. worldly wisdom

  669. hears that

  670. goes

  671. what really?

  672. That's really

  673. the truth?

  674. No one comes

  675. to God

  676. except through

  677. the Lord Jesus

  678. Christ?

  679. Is that really

  680. right?

  681. It doesn't feel

  682. like that does it?

  683. You mean

  684. do you mean

  685. to say that

  686. my lovely

  687. non-Christian

  688. neighbor

  689. my neighbor

  690. who's nicer

  691. than quite a lot

  692. of my Christian

  693. friends

  694. the one who

  695. looks after my

  696. cat while I'm

  697. away who took

  698. in my Amazon

  699. parcel yesterday?

  700. You mean

  701. to say

  702. that they're

  703. going to hell?

  704. That doesn't

  705. feel right.

  706. That doesn't

  707. feel true.

  708. Just because

  709. they don't

  710. trust in Jesus?

  711. Are you sure?

  712. Surely we have

  713. to find a

  714. different reading

  715. of the word

  716. no one

  717. don't we?

  718. So worldly

  719. wisdom sets

  720. about unpicking

  721. the uniqueness

  722. of Christ

  723. because it

  724. doesn't just

  725. feel right.

  726. But 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  727. chapter 14

  728. says listen

  729. beware of that

  730. worldly wisdom.

  731. I'll give you

  732. another example

  733. can't you?

  734. What about

  735. the Bible's

  736. teaching on

  737. marriage to

  738. mean that all

  739. sexual activity

  740. outside of the

  741. marriage of a

  742. man to a

  743. woman is wrong

  744. and immoral?

  745. I mean you

  746. really think

  747. that?

  748. You really

  749. think that?

  750. Is that how

  751. the world feels?

  752. Does that mean

  753. that loving

  754. same-sex couples

  755. or those

  756. cohabiting that

  757. all sexual

  758. activity outside

  759. of human

  760. marriage, the

  761. marriage of a

  762. man to a

  763. woman, all of

  764. that is wrong?

  765. Are you sure?

  766. Is that really?

  767. You can't believe

  768. that.

  769. That doesn't feel

  770. right, doesn't

  771. feel loving.

  772. So we bend the

  773. truth to match

  774. what we feel.

  775. All the time we

  776. do it.

  777. Worldly wisdom

  778. where feelings

  779. override the

  780. truth because they

  781. can't handle the

  782. truth.

  783. And so

  784. consciences are

  785. compromised.

  786. And that's why

  787. the wisdom of

  788. Joab here is

  789. never going to

  790. fix the problem

  791. because it can't

  792. face up to the

  793. truth.

  794. Second thing

  795. though here,

  796. there's a

  797. worldly wisdom

  798. which is impressed

  799. by appearances.

  800. Impressed by

  801. appearances.

  802. I think this is

  803. almost amusing

  804. here in the

  805. passage but if

  806. you notice that

  807. verses 25 and

  808. 27 are sort of

  809. out of place,

  810. aren't they?

  811. If you look down

  812. at your Bible

  813. you'll notice that

  814. there is a

  815. strange detail

  816. here.

  817. Why in all

  818. that's happening

  819. are you told in

  820. great detail about

  821. Absalom's appearance?

  822. You are told about

  823. the weight of

  824. Absalom's hair.

  825. Absalom cut his

  826. hair once a year

  827. and it weighed

  828. two kilograms.

  829. I mean I think

  830. these are some of

  831. the most offensive

  832. verses in the

  833. Bible.

  834. I mean I find

  835. this very difficult

  836. to accept.

  837. Imagine having

  838. two kilos of

  839. hair.

  840. I would be

  841. grateful for a

  842. few grams of

  843. hair, right?

  844. But why is this

  845. detail in here?

  846. I mean if you

  847. look at the

  848. passage, verses

  849. 24 and 28 would

  850. go perfectly well

  851. together.

  852. The writer is

  853. putting this in.

  854. Why the

  855. interruption?

  856. Well I think

  857. because they're

  858. another example of

  859. the fact that

  860. there's a twist

  861. on wisdom here.

  862. If you jump

  863. back a few

  864. pages in your

  865. Bible to 1

    1 Samuel 16 chapter mention

  866. Samuel chapter

  867. 16 you'll

  868. notice this

  869. why.

  870. So just over

  871. a few pages

  872. back to 1

    1 Samuel 16 chapter mention

  873. Samuel chapter

  874. 16.

  875. This is when

  876. David is chosen

  877. to be king in

  878. 1 Samuel chapter

    1 Samuel 16 chapter mention

  879. 16.

  880. 1 Samuel chapter

    1 Samuel 16:6

  881. 16 verse 6.

  882. It will come on

  883. the slide behind

  884. me as well.

  885. Let me read

  886. those verses to

  887. you.

  888. When they

  889. arrived, Samuel

  890. who's the

  891. prophet saw

  892. Eliab and

  893. thought surely

  894. the Lord's

  895. anointed stands

  896. here before the

  897. Lord.

  898. But the Lord

  899. said to Samuel

  900. do not consider

  901. his appearance

  902. or his height

  903. for I have

  904. rejected him.

  905. The Lord does

  906. not look at the

  907. things people

  908. look at.

  909. People look at

  910. the outward

  911. appearance but

  912. the Lord looks

  913. at the heart.

  914. When Samuel was

  915. going to anoint

  916. David as king

  917. he was really

  918. impressed by his

  919. brothers.

  920. They're tall,

  921. handsome,

  922. got a great

  923. voice,

  924. luscious hair.

  925. Surely,

  926. surely this is

  927. who God wants

  928. to be king.

  929. And God says

  930. no, you're

  931. looking at it

  932. as man looks

  933. at it.

  934. I am looking

  935. at the heart.

  936. Now you come

  937. back to 2 Samuel

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  938. chapter 14.

  939. Don't you see

  940. that this is an

  941. exact example of

  942. that kind of

  943. worldly wisdom?

  944. That's what's

  945. happening here.

  946. The narrator is

  947. telling us that

  948. Israel are doing

  949. the opposite of

  950. what God does.

  951. God looks at

  952. the heart.

  953. Israel are

  954. impressed with

  955. two kilos of

  956. hair.

  957. It's really

  958. laid on thick

  959. as well,

  960. isn't it,

  961. in verse 25.

  962. In Israel,

  963. there was not

  964. a man so

  965. highly praised

  966. for his

  967. handsome appearance

  968. as Absalom.

  969. From the top

  970. of his head

  971. to the sole

  972. of his foot,

  973. there was no

  974. blemish in him.

  975. That's one

  976. good-looking guy,

  977. isn't it?

  978. There is not a

  979. guy in the room

  980. who matches up

  981. to that.

  982. But the heart

  983. of Absalom,

  984. which we have

  985. seen and will

  986. see again,

  987. is selfish and

  988. arrogant,

  989. opposed to David

  990. and opposed to

  991. the Lord.

  992. There's more

  993. than this as well.

  994. I think you can

  995. probably make a

  996. pretty good case

  997. that hairy men

  998. in the Bible

  999. and Samson.

  1000. Perhaps the writer

  1001. had them in mind.

  1002. It's also,

  1003. though,

  1004. a point of forward

  1005. to how Absalom

  1006. will die.

  1007. You don't know

  1008. how Absalom dies.

  1009. I'm not going

  1010. to give it away

  1011. to you.

  1012. You can have

  1013. to read on

  1014. in 2 Samuel,

  1015. but it is

  1016. connected to his hair.

  1017. That will come

  1018. in a few weeks.

  1019. There's also

  1020. something here

  1021. as the mention

  1022. of three sons

  1023. and a beautiful

  1024. daughter called Tamar.

  1025. Tamar is given

  1026. the same name

  1027. as his sister

  1028. who was attacked

  1029. in chapter 13.

  1030. It's a sign,

  1031. I think,

  1032. that those events

  1033. are still fresh

  1034. in Absalom's mind.

  1035. By the time

  1036. you get to

  1037. chapter 18,

  1038. you find that

  1039. Absalom has no heir,

  1040. by which I think

  1041. you're to presume

  1042. that his sons,

  1043. his three sons,

  1044. have died.

  1045. You see,

  1046. here's the point.

  1047. Worldly wisdom

  1048. would rather look good

1049. than do the right thing.

  1050. That's the point,

  1051. isn't it?

  1052. Worldly wisdom

  1053. would rather swap

  1054. deep truth

  1055. for shallow appearance.

  1056. So much so

  1057. that murder

  1058. in 2 Samuel chapter 14

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  1059. is covered

  1060. by good looks,

  1061. by glorious locks

  1062. of hair

  1063. and stunning good looks.

  1064. And it happens

  1065. all the time,

  1066. doesn't it?

  1067. It's why

  1068. kind of wicked

  1069. and deceitful politicians

  1070. can still get

  1071. a really popular following

  1072. because we would

  1073. rather work

  1074. on appearances

  1075. than we would

  1076. on what is right.

  1077. But notice

  1078. that this appearance

  1079. over reality

  1080. is absolutely

  1081. no help

  1082. in the face

  1083. of relational breakdown.

  1084. Absalom's good looks

  1085. are never going

  1086. to atone

  1087. for the fact

  1088. that he's killed

  1089. his brother.

  1090. The royal photos

  1091. will look miles better

  1092. with Absalom in them,

  1093. right?

  1094. Because he's the best

  1095. looking guy

  1096. in the family.

  1097. But the relational tension

  1098. will not go away.

  1099. It's still there.

  1100. You see,

  1101. Joab's worldly wisdom

  1102. really can only ever

  1103. tell David and Absalom,

  1104. listen,

1105. I know that you guys

  1106. have got a problem

  1107. with each other,

  1108. but can't you just

  1109. fake it?

  1110. Can't we just take a selfie

  1111. and smile,

  1112. post it on Instagram,

  1113. everyone will think

  1114. we're all right?

1115. Can we just do that?

  1116. You'll look great.

  1117. You'll look great.

  1118. Let's do it.

1119. It has no other option.

  1120. Listen,

1121. I want you to face

  1122. this this morning.

  1123. Think back to how

  1124. we started.

1125. The wisdom of the world

1126. has nothing to offer you

1127. in the face of the

  1128. relational breakdown

  1129. that you feel and

  1130. experience every single

  1131. day of your life.

1132. It has nothing to offer you

  1133. because there's a price

  1134. for every relational

  1135. breakdown,

  1136. isn't there?

  1137. Justice is demanded

  1138. by Absalom's murder

  1139. of Amnon.

1140. For a wife to reconcile

  1141. with an unfaithful husband,

1142. for a brother to forgive

1143. his sister who has hurt him,

  1144. there is a hurt

1145. that needs to be absorbed.

  1146. There is a truth

1147. that needs to be dealt with.

  1148. There is the fact

  1149. that something has been

  1150. done wrong.

  1151. Someone has abused you,

  1152. mistreated you,

  1153. looked over you

  1154. because of the color

  1155. of your skin.

  1156. There is a price

  1157. to be paid for.

  1158. Justice is demanded

  1159. because of that.

  1160. And all the world

1161. can say to you is,

  1162. smile, let's take

  1163. a nice looking selfie

1164. and everything will be okay.

1165. It has nothing to offer you

1166. when it comes to justice.

  1167. All they can do

  1168. is fake it

  1169. and pretend it's okay.

  1170. So it leaves you

  1171. with nowhere to take

  1172. the ache,

  1173. the tears,

  1174. the pain.

  1175. Joab says,

  1176. listen,

  1177. I know it's difficult

  1178. but it looks good,

  1179. doesn't it?

  1180. But it doesn't deal

  1181. with a problem.

  1182. Which brings us

  1183. to the final point

  1184. this morning

  1185. which is this,

  1186. worldly wisdom

  1187. ignores God's king.

  1188. What you cannot help

1189. but miss in these chapters

1190. is that great King David

  1191. is basically a passenger.

  1192. David in 2 Samuel 14

  1193. is the one

  1194. who's not doing anything.

  1195. Joab is kind of

  1196. captain of the ship.

  1197. He's manipulating David

1198. with this woman at Tekoa.

  1199. Absalom is then

  1200. manipulating Joab

1201. going as far as burning

  1202. his crops

1203. to get his own wear.

  1204. Interestingly,

  1205. in the passage,

  1206. the only mention

  1207. really of the Lord

  1208. as well

  1209. is in his relationship

  1210. to David.

1211. David is like an angel

  1212. of the Lord

  1213. in verse 17

  1214. and verse 20.

  1215. And he's recognized

  1216. in verse 16

  1217. as the holder

  1218. of the covenant

  1219. heritage of God.

  1220. But for all that,

  1221. David in chapter 14

  1222. is not leading.

  1223. He's not being kingly.

1224. He's not being listened to.

  1225. Worldly wisdom

  1226. is leading the way

  1227. in chapter 14.

  1228. The king is silent.

  1229. That should be

  1230. a kind of pointer

  1231. to you

  1232. that not all

  1233. is well

  1234. in chapter 14.

1235. But let me show you

  1236. something brilliant

  1237. about this.

  1238. If you've zoned out

  1239. for a moment,

  1240. just tune back in

  1241. because this is,

  1242. I think,

  1243. the brilliance

  1244. of 2 Samuel chapter 14.

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

1245. You and I are reading

  1246. this account

1247. probably three and a half

  1248. thousand years or so

  1249. after it happened.

  1250. You and I know,

  1251. don't we,

  1252. that God's king

  1253. is not really

  1254. King David.

  1255. King David is,

  1256. if you like,

  1257. a prototype,

1258. a type of the real

  1259. king of God's people

  1260. who is the Lord

  1261. Jesus Christ,

  1262. the one who

  1263. is the ultimate

  1264. person who has

  1265. a good heart,

  1266. yeah,

1267. a heart after the Lord

  1268. because he is

  1269. God in flesh,

  1270. God the eternal son

  1271. come down,

  1272. born as a baby,

  1273. living,

  1274. dying for us.

  1275. So we know that,

  1276. don't we?

1277. So think of a time

  1278. then when,

  1279. when God's real king,

  1280. God's king Jesus

  1281. is a passenger

  1282. of worldly wisdom

  1283. in the same way

  1284. as 2 Samuel chapter 14.

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  1285. Can you think

  1286. of a time

  1287. when King Jesus,

  1288. the real king

  1289. of God's people

  1290. is treated like David

  1291. where he's manipulated

  1292. and twisted

  1293. and pushed into doing

  1294. all sorts of things?

  1295. Can you think

1296. of a time like that?

  1297. Do you see

  1298. the Jewish leaders

  1299. and the Roman rulers

  1300. and the puppet kings

  1301. conspire to drag

  1302. King Jesus

  1303. out of Jerusalem

  1304. and nail him

  1305. to a cross?

  1306. I don't think

  1307. that's the ultimate

  1308. victory of worldly wisdom.

  1309. That is the ultimate

  1310. victory of feelings

  1311. tripping over justice.

  1312. We're jealous

  1313. of this man Jesus.

1314. Let's put him to death.

  1315. This is appearances

  1316. winning over hearts,

  1317. isn't it?

  1318. Jesus is naked

  1319. and bleeding

  1320. and mocked

  1321. by the people.

  1322. I don't want anything

  1323. to do with him.

  1324. He looks terrible.

  1325. What is going on

  1326. when that happens

  1327. to the Lord Jesus?

  1328. Let me tell you

  1329. something fantastic.

  1330. In that moment

  1331. when worldly wisdom

  1332. seems to be winning,

  1333. what you are witnessing

1334. is the wisdom of God

  1335. in providing atonement

  1336. for relational breakdown.

  1337. That's what you're seeing.

  1338. So much so

  1339. that the worldly wisdom

  1340. of the crowd

  1341. that nails Jesus

1342. to a cross of shame

  1343. does not defeat Jesus

  1344. but glorifies him.

  1345. As in his sacrifice

  1346. on the cross

1347. he is providing the means

  1348. for relational forgiveness

  1349. and atonement.

  1350. Not so much

1351. to be able to bring

  1352. Absalom back from exile

  1353. with his grandfather

  1354. but bringing sinners

  1355. back from exile

  1356. into relationship

  1357. with the God

  1358. who made them

  1359. so that people

  1360. like you and I

  1361. who have sinned

  1362. against God

1363. and fallen out with him

  1364. and broken our relationship

  1365. with him

  1366. might be brought back

  1367. into relationship

  1368. with the God

  1369. who made us

  1370. through the atoning power

1371. of Jesus on the cross.

  1372. Even at the point

1373. when he was a passenger

  1374. of worldly wisdom.

1375. Jesus dying in our place

1376. paying the cost of justice

1377. facing up to the hard truth.

1378. This is the very definition

  1379. of not putting appearances

  1380. above truth and reality

  1381. as Jesus the bleeding

  1382. dying suffering one

  1383. naked on a tree

  1384. is the most beautiful

  1385. wonderful and glorious saviour.

1386. It's hard to capture this

1387. but try with me if you can

1388. in the face of the tragic relationships

  1389. in 2 Samuel chapter 14

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  1390. all Joab can do

  1391. is fake it

  1392. and cover it over.

1393. He just can't go deep enough

  1394. to solve the problem

  1395. between Absalom

  1396. and his father David.

  1397. He had no means

  1398. to provide justice

  1399. for Absalom's wickedness

  1400. and reconciliation

  1401. for David's love.

  1402. All he had was

  1403. shallow solutions

  1404. for deep problems

  1405. and it's always

1406. the way in the world.

  1407. The worldly wisdom

1408. will take in the face

  1409. of the relationship problems

1410. that we all suffer from

1411. the world will just say

1412. oh just forget about it.

1413. Just go on a nice holiday

  1414. buy yourself something new

  1415. pretend it doesn't happen

1416. but you know it doesn't work

1417. and you know it doesn't work

1418. because you still wake up

  1419. thinking about them

1420. it's still chewing you up inside.

1421. But then in the great triumph

  1422. of God's glorious wisdom

1423. Jesus dies on the cross

  1424. seemingly the victim

1425. of this kind of fake it

1426. and cover it up world

  1427. but he hangs there

  1428. because the Jewish leaders

1429. were so jealous of him

  1430. but in those moments

1431. as Jesus breathes his last

  1432. he accomplishes relational harmony

1433. not only between God and men

1434. but between brothers and sisters

  1435. men and women

1436. as he provides the means

1437. for us to forgive one another.

  1438. 1 Corinthians chapter 1 verse 25

    1 Corinthians 1:25

  1439. puts it like this

1440. because the foolishness of God

1441. is wiser than human wisdom

1442. and the weakness of God

1443. is stronger than human strength.

  1444. Here's the point

1445. as simply as I can try

1446. and put it this morning

  1447. relationship breakdown

  1448. comes with a price

  1449. a cost

  1450. a justice.

1451. So with us and God

  1452. if you're not a Christian

  1453. you will never know

1454. the God who made you

  1455. without coming through

  1456. the only one

1457. who can pay the price

  1458. for your reconciliation.

  1459. That remains true

  1460. even when you're a Christian

  1461. and it's true also

  1462. in our relationships

  1463. with one another.

  1464. That only Christ

  1465. has the resources

1466. for you to forgive another.

1467. Only Christ can offer you

  1468. the deep solution

  1469. because only he

  1470. has the capital

  1471. if you like

  1472. to pay the price

  1473. for justice and truth.

  1474. Perhaps this morning

1475. you know that there is

  1476. someone that you've

  1477. fallen out with.

  1478. Maybe it's a small

  1479. maybe it's a petty matter

1480. or maybe it's a really big deal

1481. maybe it's as big as

  1482. Absalom and David here.

  1483. What do you do?

1484. Let me say to you

1485. the only thing you can do

1486. is come to the Lord Jesus Christ

  1487. and find in him

  1488. all the resources

  1489. that you need

  1490. for forgiveness and grace

1491. so that you can move

  1492. towards another person

  1493. and say with genuineness

  1494. without covering everything over

  1495. with genuineness

1496. you can say to them

  1497. I forgive you

  1498. I love you

  1499. because Jesus

1500. has paid the price of justice

  1501. that our relationship

  1502. reconciliation requires

1503. and he did it on the cross.

  1504. And maybe in some

  1505. of these situations

  1506. reconciliation like that

  1507. won't be possible

  1508. because the other person

  1509. won't speak to you

1510. or won't engage with it.

1511. What comfort is there then?

1512. Well you know don't you

1513. you and I live in a world

1514. where the wisdom of God

1515. can take the worldly wisdom

  1516. the folly of man

  1517. and use it

1518. to accomplish his great purposes.

1519. So you don't need to be afraid

1520. you need to trust the Lord

  1521. and press on

  1522. because in this world

  1523. God can be trusted

  1524. even to accomplish

  1525. his great purposes

  1526. through the tragedy

1527. of our worldly twisted wisdom.

  1528. Let's pray

  1529. together as we close.

  1530. Let me just leave

  1531. a bit of quiet

  1532. for you to pray

  1533. in your own hearts.

1534. Maybe come to the Lord

  1535. with a situation

  1536. or a problem

  1537. that's troubling you.

  1538. Thank the Lord

  1539. that he alone

  1540. has the resources

1541. to help you face it.

  1542. Heavenly Father

  1543. we want to say

  1544. thank you for Jesus.

1545. Thank you that in Jesus

  1546. we can face

  1547. truth and reality

  1548. and find grace

  1549. and mercy

  1550. resources to forgive

  1551. one another

  1552. reconciliation with you.

1553. Thank you that in the end

  1554. the twisted worldly wisdom

  1555. of 2 Samuel chapter 14

    2 Samuel 14 chapter mention

  1556. does not win

  1557. but your wisdom

  1558. is stronger

1559. than the wisdom of man.

1560. thank you that your weakness

  1561. is stronger

  1562. than our greatest power.

  1563. So thank you

1564. that we can trust you

  1565. and turn to you.

  1566. Our Lord please

  1567. we pray

1568. might we be a church

  1569. that love one another

  1570. because we find

  1571. the resources

  1572. for loving one another

1573. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  1574. and his work

1575. for us on the cross.

1576. In his name we pray.

  1577. Amen.

  1578. Amen.

  1579. Amen.

  1580. Amen.

  1581. Amen.

  1582. Amen.

  1583. Amen.

  1584. Amen.

  1585. Amen.

  1586. Amen.
