  1. Great, let me read 2 Samuel 21 for us.

  2. During the reign of David,

  3. there was a famine for three successive years.

  4. So David sought the face of the Lord.

  5. The Lord said, it is on account of Saul

  6. and his blood-stained house.

  7. It's because he put the Gibeonites to death.

  8. The king summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them.

  9. Now, the Gibeonites were not part of Israel,

  10. but were survivors of the Amorites.

  11. The Israelites had sworn to spare them,

  12. but Saul, in his zeal for Israel and Judah,

  13. had tried to annihilate them.

  14. David asked the Gibeonites, what shall I do for you?

  15. How shall I make atonement

  16. so that you will bless the Lord's inheritance?

  17. The Gibeonites answered him,

  18. we have no right to demand silver or gold

  19. from Saul or his family,

  20. nor do we have the right to put anyone in Israel to death.

  21. What do you want me to do for you?

  22. David asked.

  23. They answered the king,

  24. as for the man who destroyed us and plotted against us

  25. so that we have been decimated

  26. and have no place anywhere in Israel,

  27. let seven of his male descendants be given to us

  28. to be killed and their bodies exposed

  29. before the Lord at Gibeah of Saul,

  30. the Lord's chosen one.

  31. So the king said,

  32. I will give them to you.

  33. The king spared Mephibosheth, son of Jonathan,

  34. the son of Saul,

  35. because of the oath before the Lord

  36. between David and Jonathan, son of Saul.

  37. But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth,

  38. the two sons of Ai's daughter, Rizpa,

  39. whom she had born to Saul,

  40. together with the five sons of Saul's daughter, Merab,

  41. whom she had born to Adriel, son of Barzilia,

  42. the Mephalonites.

  43. He handed them over to the Gibeonites

  44. who killed them and exposed their bodies

  45. on a hill before the Lord.

  46. All seven of them fell together.

  47. They were put to death during the first days of harvest,

  48. just as the barley harvest was beginning.

  49. Rizpa, daughter of Ai's,

  50. took sackcloth and spread it out for herself on a rock.

  51. From the beginning of the harvest

  52. till the rain poured down from the heavens on the bodies,

  53. she did not let the birds touch them by day

  54. or the wild animals by night.

  55. When David was told what Ai's daughter Rizpa,

  56. Saul's concubine, had done,

  57. he went and took the bones of Saul

  58. and his son Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh-Gilead.

  59. They had stolen their bodies

  60. from the public square at Beth-Shan

  61. where the Philistines had hung them

  62. after they struck Saul down on Gilboa.

  63. David brought the bones of Saul

  64. and his son Jonathan from there

  65. and the bones of those who had been killed

  66. and exposed were gathered up.

  67. They buried the bones of Saul

  68. and his son Jonathan in the tomb

  69. of Saul's father Kish at Zela in Benjamin

  70. and did everything the king commanded.

  71. After that, God answered prayer on behalf of the land.

  72. Once again, there was a battle between the Philistines and Israel.

  73. David went down with his men to fight against the Philistines

  74. and he became exhausted.

  75. And Ishbi Benob, one of the descendants of Raphah,

  76. whose bronze spearhead weighed 300 shekels

  77. and who was armed with a new sword,

  78. said he would kill David.

  79. But Abishai, son of Zariah, came to David's rescue.

  80. He struck the Philistine down and killed him.

  81. And David's men swore to him, saying,

  82. Never again will you go out with us to battle

  83. so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished.

  84. In the course of time, there was another battle

  85. with the Philistines at Gob.

  86. At that time, Sibikai, the Hushite,

  87. killed Saph, one of the descendants of Raphah.

  88. In another battle with the Philistines at Gob,

  89. Elhan, the son of Jair, the Bethlehemite,

  90. killed the brother of Goliath, the Gittite,

  91. who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod.

  92. In still another battle, which took place at Gath,

  93. there was a huge man, six fingers on each hand

  94. and six toes on each foot, 24 in all.

  95. He was also descended from Raphah.

  96. When he taunted Israel, Jonathan, son of Shimei,

  97. David's brother, killed him.

  98. These four were descendants of Raphah in Gath,

  99. and they fell at the hands of David and his men.

  100. Well, this is the word of the Lord,

  101. and we're going to consider it together.

  102. So let me pray very briefly and ask for the Lord's help.

  103. Father, as we come to look at this passage of the Bible,

  104. we recognise with all its complexities and confusions for us,

  105. it is your word, and you do speak clearly from it.

  106. So please help us this morning, both me as I speak,

  107. all of us as we listen, to be good at listening to you.

  108. We pray.

  109. Speak, O Lord, we ask in Jesus' name.

  110. Amen.

  111. Amen.

  112. Now, if you've been with us before this morning,

  113. you will know that we are working our way through the book of 2 Samuel,

  114. and we've come to what essentially is the final lap of the book.

  115. We've come to what is the writer's conclusion.

  116. So let me just point out to you as we start off

  117. that the material here is not chronological.

  118. In other words, chapter 21 does not follow chapter 20 in chronology.

  119. It's not a history order in that sense.

  120. Rather, what you've got in chapters 21,

  121. right to the end of the book in chapter 24,

  122. is a conclusion, a summary or summing up of the book.

  123. You can see that in a few ways.

  124. So I think probably, although the NIV tries to fudge it a little bit,

  125. I think it's probably Goliath's death in verse 19 that gets mentioned,

  126. and where Elhan is a family name for David and Jar is another name for Jesse, probably.

  127. Another way, though, that you can see it is the really careful way that the writer has arranged his material.

  128. So you'll notice, because we just read it, that it starts with Saul's sin.

  129. This chapter is all about Saul's sin, and then it ends with some fighting men

  130. and a list of their mighty victories with this defeat of the giant with 12 fingers and 12 tones.

  131. Then at the end of the book, in chapter 24, you have, at the end, David's sin,

  132. in that he counted the people of Israel.

  133. And then before that, you get a list of David's mighty men as well.

  134. So you've got a symmetry between what's going on in chapter 21, what goes on in chapter 24.

  135. And then right in the middle of all of that is David's song and his last words.

  136. And that is the sort of summing up of the book of 2 Samuel.

  137. What I want to do with our time this morning is really just to zoom in on those opening 15 verses of chapter 21

  138. and look at what they teach us about sin and salvation.

  139. So the first thing to do is just to make sure we get the story straight in our minds.

  140. You'll find in verse 1 that there is a famine that's been going on for three years.

  141. Year after year after year, the crops have failed, there's been no rain.

  142. And so David, we're told, seeks the face of the Lord.

  143. Presumably here, David instinctively understands that this is more than just a bit of bad luck, right?

  144. He understands that the crop failure is God trying to tell him something and say he seeks the Lord.

  145. It feels like to David a covenant curse, a curse from God.

  146. And he's right because God tells him that there is a blood stain or blood guilt on Saul for killing the Gibeonites.

  147. Now, hopefully, in case you don't know, it's OK if you don't know, the Gibeonites, we are told who they are in verse 2.

  148. The Gibeonites were a group of people who way back in Joshua's day,

  149. so Joshua led the people in the conquest of the land of Israel.

  150. The Gibeonites came to Joshua pretending to be from a really long way away.

  151. The Gibeonites recognized that Joshua was conquering the land and defeating and destroying all the people there.

  152. So they put moldy bread in their bags and broken wineskins,

  153. pretend that they'd traveled a long, long way and said to Joshua,

  154. listen, I know that you're going to conquer this land and we're from a really long way away away,

  155. but please make peace with us.

  156. And so Joshua did and he made a covenant with them not to wipe them out.

  157. But really, as it turns out, the Gibeonites had tricked Joshua and they were from close by,

  158. but still the covenant promise stood.

  159. And here what you find out is that Saul had broken the covenant promise.

  160. His zeal for Israel led him to try and kill the foreigners, the Gibeonites,

  161. who were amongst God's people because of that covenant.

  162. And that covenant breaking by Saul led to a bloodstain, which led to a famine,

  163. which had been sent as divine punishment or curse for breaking the covenant.

  164. Now, all that means that in the rest of the story,

  165. David tries to make atonement, as he calls it in verse three,

  166. and asked the Gibeonites, what can be done for you?

  167. How can we deal with this guilt of Saul?

  168. Gibeonites recognize that this kind of sin can't be bought off lightly.

  169. You can't pretend that it didn't exist.

  170. And as essentially slaves in Israel, the Gibeonites had no authority to exact any punishment.

  171. They couldn't demand money.

  172. They couldn't demand life for life or anything like that.

  173. So they had to go through David.

  174. And so after a bit of encouragement from David at the end of verse four,

  175. they summon the courage to suggest the plan that seven sons of Saul

  176. be hung on trees in Gibeah, the ancestral home of King Saul.

  177. David agrees to the plan at the end of verse six,

  178. and he spares Mephibosheth, who you might have met if you were with us several chapters ago,

  179. in earlier on in the book of 2 Samuel.

  180. David suggests that two sons of Saul's concubine, Risper,

  181. including confusingly one who is also called Mephibosheth,

  182. and also five grandsons from Saul's daughter Merab.

  183. They are hung on trees on the mountain, exposed before the Lord,

  184. and they die together at the beginning of the barley harvest.

  185. Risper, we're told, sets up a kind of mini camp on sackcloth

  186. while she waits for the redemption from the famine and the arrival of the rains.

  187. When, in verse 11, that David finds out what Risper has done,

  188. he rewards her and honours her two sons and the other five men with a burial.

  189. And he collects Saul and Jonathan's bones

  190. and buries them in the tomb of Saul's father in Zela.

  191. And the story is wrapped up with those words

  192. that after that God answered prayer on behalf of the land.

  193. Now, that's a really super quick run through the story,

  194. and I'm sure as you hear it, you think,

  195. maybe if you're like me, you think,

  196. what a crazy story.

  197. What a crazy place.

  198. And probably what you're thinking is,

  199. is it right, is it even moral

  200. that two sons and five grandsons are killed

  201. for Saul's wickedness and not for their own?

  202. How can that be fair?

  203. Well, we will come to that,

  204. but what I want us to do is just focus our time

  205. on two words in the passage

  206. and just see together how they unlock

  207. what this story means for us

  208. and why it's here in the Bible

  209. and why we're looking at it this morning.

  210. The first word to think about is this word,

  211. bloodstain, bloodstains.

  212. There in verse one, we looked at it briefly before, bloodstain.

  213. Interestingly, in verse two,

  214. we're told that it is Saul's zeal for the people,

  215. which is presumably a good thing for a king to have,

  216. that leads him to doing a wrong thing of breaking this promise.

  217. Bloodstain comes from the passion

  218. that led to an action of breaking a promise,

  219. killing a group of people who he was supposed to protect.

  220. He was bound by a covenant to protect them.

  221. And the breaking of that covenant means then

  222. that there is bloodstain on Saul's house

  223. and the land is experiencing the curse as a result.

  224. Now, it's worth thinking about this word some more

  225. because really the word that our Bibles translate,

  226. bloodstain, is really just the Hebrew word, blood.

  227. Bloods, bloods.

  228. The word bloodstain or blood guilt,

  229. as it might appear in other versions of the English Bible,

  230. was a word that was made up by the earliest translators

  231. of our English Bibles.

  232. It was there in 1535 in Coverdale's Bible.

  233. It was probably invented by Tyndale himself

  234. as an English word to translate this Hebrew word, blood,

  235. when it's used in this kind of way.

  236. And he famously used it in Psalm 51,

  237. where David says, having killed Uriah the Hittite,

  238. he says, deliver me from blood guiltiness,

  239. O God, O God of my salvation, Psalm 51.

  240. Now, the reason, you might be thinking,

  241. why would you make up a word?

  242. Well, the reason is that the English word blood

  243. doesn't really cover what the Hebrew word blood

  244. means in this context.

  245. You see, in the ancient world,

  246. blood is not just the red stuff

  247. that flows through your veins,

  248. and that's the extent of my medical knowledge about blood.

  249. Rather, blood in ancient times was your life.

  250. It represented your life.

  251. Life was in the blood.

  252. Life and death are symbolized by blood.

  253. The blood carries your life.

  254. So that the priest sacrificing at the altar in Leviticus,

  255. he would collect the blood of the sacrifice

  256. and use it to sprinkle and cleanse the people and the altar.

  257. Not because the blood itself was magically in a sense,

  258. but because the blood represented the life

  259. of the sacrifice that was given.

  260. They are parallel to one another.

  261. Now, if you bring that back to verse one of our passage here,

  262. you can see the point, can't you?

  263. God's point in 2 Samuel 21 verse one

  264. is that there is blood on the house of Saul

  265. because the stains of the lives of the Gibeonites

  266. are hanging over Saul and his household

  267. and over the people.

  268. The death blood has stained the moral standing

  269. of the people in the land.

  270. Now, back in Numbers 35,

  271. God warned people about this.

  272. It'll come up on the screen behind me.

  273. Let me read it to you.

  274. Numbers 35 verse 33.

    Numbers 35:33

  275. Do not pollute the land where you are.

  276. Bloodshed pollutes the land.

  277. Not because blood is like a dirty substance on the floor.

  278. No, because it's the guilt,

  279. the life contained in the blood,

  280. which pollutes the land.

  281. And atonement cannot be made for the land

  282. on which blood has been shed,

  283. except by the blood of the one who shed it.

  284. Do not defile the land where you live

  285. and where I dwell,

  286. for I, the Lord, dwell among the Israelites.

  287. Now, the context in Numbers is about individual murders

  288. and a thing called cities of refuge,

  289. but you can see how it links to our passage this morning,

  290. can't you?

  291. Saul had effectively murdered the Gibeonites

  292. and the bloodstain was on his house

  293. and the land and the people,

  294. and that was a problem.

  295. Now, I realise that as you talk about this this morning,

  296. we are now in the language of the ancient Israel, aren't we?

  297. We're in the language of the Bible,

  298. we're outside of our own context,

  299. and this might sound a little bit strange to us,

  300. but we don't talk like this, do we?

  301. And so maybe you're sitting here this morning thinking,

  302. well, this is all very interesting, Steve.

  303. You maybe don't think that.

  304. You maybe think this is all not very interesting, Steve.

  305. But imagine that you're thinking,

  306. this is a very interesting, Steve,

  307. but what on earth does this have to do with us?

  308. Perhaps this is just a historical quirk,

  309. an interesting fact of history.

  310. But I want to suggest to you

  311. that though we might not use this language,

  312. we all do know what bloodstain is.

  313. We all know what blood guilt is.

  314. This whole case for reparations

  315. that has been in the news recently

  316. is because there's a sense in which,

  317. and a right way to put it would be

  318. that there is a bloodstain on Britain

  319. for what happened in the slave trade.

  320. There is a guiltiness for the lives

  321. that were taken advantage of and killed,

  322. and now calling out for justice.

  323. You could use the same idea

  324. to speak of the bloodstain on the Harrods store

  325. for the action of their boss

  326. in his serial abuse of female staff and guests,

  327. abusing his power,

  328. taking away their dignity,

  329. bringing bloodstain, to use this language,

  330. on the company itself.

  331. And we know that, don't we?

  332. We might not use this word,

  333. bloodstain or blood guilt,

  334. but we instinctively know, don't we,

  335. that when life is treated

  336. as less than what it is worth,

  337. it leaves a stain, a mark,

  338. or a guilt on the people who did it.

  339. Lives call out for justice.

  340. But here's the pinch for us

  341. in 2 Samuel chapter 21,

    2 Samuel 21 chapter mention

  342. is that we're not so much to see this

  343. as a condemnation of the slave trade,

  344. as wicked as that was,

  345. or Mohammed al-Fayed as wicked as he was,

  346. but we are to read it incredibly

  347. as our own bloodstain.

  348. You see, if you read 2 Samuel 21

  349. in the light of the New Testament,

  350. you see that this kind of language

  351. is not just used of kings and nations,

  352. it's used of individuals,

  353. people like you,

  354. and people like me,

  355. where we cover ourselves in blood guilt,

  356. not just for the heinous sin

  357. of murder or slave trading,

  358. I guess that none of us

  359. have been involved in that,

  360. but for the regular everyday sin

  361. of selfishness,

  362. pride, lust, anger,

  363. disobedience to our parents,

  364. lying,

  365. refusal to take the worship

  366. of our God seriously.

  367. all of those,

  368. Paul says in Romans 6 verse 23,

    Romans 6:23

  369. he says,

  370. the wages of sin is death.

  371. We are blood guilty

  372. because of our sin.

  373. Now maybe this morning,

  374. you think,

  375. wow, that's way too serious, right?

  376. How can we get blood guilt

  377. for lying,

  378. or disobedience to our parents,

  379. or just losing my temper

  380. in a totally rational way

  381. when something happened?

  382. How can that leave me

  383. with the kind of blood guilt

  384. that you're talking about

  385. from 2 Samuel chapter 21?

    2 Samuel 21 chapter mention

  386. Well, really,

  387. that is because lying,

  388. anger,

  389. lust,

  390. disobedience to our parents

  391. is what?

  392. A symptom.

  393. A symptom of a deeper problem,

  394. which is our sin.

  395. Sin,

  396. which is the inclination

  397. of our hearts

  398. to live for ourselves,

  399. to do our own thing,

  400. to disregard our maker.

  401. That brings blood guilt.

  402. Not so much

  403. because we've taken

  404. the life of another,

  405. but because we've taken

  406. our own lives

  407. which have been given to us,

  408. and we've used them

  409. for ourselves.

  410. We have robbed God

  411. of the lives

  412. that he has given us,

  413. and lived them for ourselves

  414. when they were meant

  415. to be lived for him,

  416. and therefore,

  417. the wages of sin

  418. is death.

  419. This is really,

  420. really important.

  421. Let me try and illustrate

  422. what I mean here

  423. with a slightly silly illustration,

  424. but hopefully it will help.

  425. I want you to imagine with me

  426. that you've been given a job

  427. as an Asda grocery delivery driver.

  428. Okay?

  429. So,

  430. you turn up at the depot,

  431. and you are handed the keys

  432. of a brand new,

  433. not yet dented,

  434. Mercedes van

  435. to deliver groceries

  436. around northwest London.

  437. And they hand you the keys,

  438. and they load up the van

  439. with all sorts of different

  440. kinds of groceries,

  441. and they say,

  442. right, here's a list of places

  443. that you're to go

  444. with this van

  445. that we've given to you

  446. so that you might deliver

  447. these groceries.

  448. And you need to go

  449. down the list

  450. and work your way around

  451. and deliver these groceries.

  452. You know the drill.

  453. You know what's going on.

  454. But then what you do

  455. is you sit in the van

  456. and you start the engine.

  457. You think,

  458. do you know what?

  459. I've got a Mercedes van

  460. full of food.

  461. I'm going to drive to Brighton.

  462. I'm going to sit on the beach

  463. and have the picnic of my life.

  464. Right?

  465. So,

  466. that's exactly what you do.

  467. And then as you drive back,

  468. you've had this great picnic

  469. on the beach at Brighton.

  470. Then you drive back

  471. and you think,

  472. well,

  473. I'm on the A406.

  474. Everyone races on the A406.

  475. I wonder what this Mercedes van

  476. is capable of,

  477. right?

  478. And so you crunch it down

  479. a few gears

  480. and you absolutely rag it

  481. on the A406

  482. trying to burn off

  483. Jeff and his Skoda.

  484. And,

  485. you know,

  486. you spin the wheels up.

  487. The gearbox is making

  488. a really funny whine

  489. because you've absolutely

  490. thrashed this van.

  491. And then you,

  492. then you pull back up

  493. in the depot.

  494. Okay?

  495. So you've,

  496. you've been out

  497. for your day's work.

  498. You've eaten all the food

  499. and you've ragged the van

  500. on the A406

  501. and you pull up at the depot.

  502. What do you expect them to say?

  503. You expect them to tell you off,

  504. don't you?

  505. More than that,

  506. you expect them

  507. to take the van off you

  508. and never give it back.

  509. Don't you?

  510. Because you have taken

  511. what was given to you

  512. for a purpose

  513. and have used it

  514. for a completely different one.

  515. For your own

  516. selfish

  517. indulgement.

  518. and the Bible says

  519. that is exactly

  520. what we have done

  521. with the lives

  522. that God has given us.

  523. That we have taken

  524. what God has given us,

  525. the life that he has given us,

  526. that has been handed to us

  527. by God

  528. for a specific purpose.

  529. You know,

  530. none of us this morning

  531. chose to be born,

  532. did we?

  533. None of us did.

  534. None of us gave ourselves life.

  535. None of us own ourselves

  536. in that way.

  537. The truth is

  538. that lives are given to us

  539. that we might live

  540. for the glory of him

  541. who made us

  542. and live for his glory

  543. in all things.

  544. Not because that spoils our joy,

  545. but because that's joy defined.

  546. Considering God

  547. our highest good,

  548. our greatest joy.

  549. But instead,

  550. we take the blood,

  551. the life,

  552. the van,

  553. if you like,

  554. of our lives

  555. and in zeal

  556. for our own joy.

  557. We use it

  558. for the moral equivalent

  559. of having a beach

  560. for ourselves

  561. on Brighton Beach

  562. and doing races

  563. up the 406.

  564. You know,

  565. we're more interested,

  566. aren't we,

  567. with our own glory

  568. than we are with God's.

  569. We take his purpose

  570. for work

  571. and we make it about us

  572. and our fulfillment

  573. and our identity.

  574. You know,

  575. we say that we're motivated,

  576. but really what we are

  577. is addicted

  578. to our own glory.

  579. We take sex,

  580. which God has given to us

  581. for our joy

  582. within the marriage

  583. of a man and a woman

  584. and we use it

  585. for our own selfish self-expression

  586. and satisfaction.

  587. We take the material blessing

  588. of stuff

  589. and we hoard it

  590. as if it's trophies

  591. of our own self-interest.

  592. We take the blessing

  593. of family

  594. and of friendships

  595. and we make it an idol

  596. that prevents us

  597. from attending

  598. the worship of our Creator

  599. or gathering with His people.

  600. And because of that,

  601. our van,

  602. if you like,

  603. or our blood,

  604. our lives

  605. are stained with guilt

  606. and are due to another,

  607. to the one

  608. who gave them to us.

  609. We must give them back.

  610. Let me say this morning,

  611. if you will not,

  612. if you don't understand this,

  613. the message of the Bible

  614. will remain mysterious to you.

  615. The message of the Bible

  616. is that what's wrong

  617. with the world

  618. is not so much

  619. just a bit of immorality,

  620. right?

  621. The fact that you lost

  622. your temper with your mum

  623. and you swore at her,

  624. right,

  625. that did not break

  626. the universe.

  627. The fact that you

  628. have got a speeding ticket,

  629. that is not the problem

  630. in the universe.

  631. That the problem

  632. in the universe,

  633. the reason that

  634. we,

  635. as humanity,

  636. are destined

  637. to death,

  638. hell,

  639. judgment,

  640. is because

  641. those things

  642. that we do wrong

  643. are a symptom

  644. of the fact

  645. that we have taken

  646. the lives

  647. which have been

  648. given to us by God

  649. and have used them

  650. for ourselves.

  651. And in zeal

  652. for our own pleasure

  653. and joy,

  654. we have lived

  655. for our own glory.

  656. And all of us

  657. are in the same boat.

  658. And I don't know

  659. how you read these stories

  660. of the Old Testament

  661. for yourself,

  662. but when you read it,

  663. I wonder who you

  664. imagine you're like,

  665. right?

  666. I always imagine myself

  667. to be the great hero

  668. in these stories.

  669. You know,

  670. I'm the guy

  671. who slayed the guy

  672. with six fingers

  673. on each hand,

  674. right?

  675. That's who I want to be.

  676. But actually,

  677. the story of 2 Samuel

  678. is that I'm sore

  679. and I have stained

  680. my life with blood guilt.

  681. And while there might not

  682. be three years of famine

  683. to make me wonder about it,

  684. still the carnage

  685. of the world around me,

  686. the carnage of the city

  687. that we live in,

  688. screams to us

  689. that a covenant

  690. has been broken.

  691. All is not well.

  692. And 2 Samuel 21

  693. invites you

  694. to be wise enough

  695. to go,

  696. what's wrong

  697. with the world?

  698. What's the promise

  699. that we've broken?

  700. What's wrong?

  701. Where's the blood guilt?

  702. Where's the blood stain?

  703. And the Bible says

  704. it's here.

  705. It's in our hearts.

  706. Now that leads us

  707. on to the second word

  708. of the passage

  709. to think about,

  710. which is this word,

  711. atonement.

  712. Atonement.

  713. The word is there

  714. in verse 3

  715. if you look down,

  716. and David instinctively

  717. knows that blood stain

  718. requires atonement.

  719. In other words,

  720. to remove the stain

  721. of Saul's guilt,

  722. it needs justice.

  723. It needs a putting

  724. of the record right.

  725. It can't just be

  726. like a kind of cover-up.

  727. Rather,

  728. before God the judge,

  729. something needs to happen.

  730. Now,

  731. we saw, didn't we,

  732. that the Gibeonites

  733. are slow to ask

  734. what they know

  735. needs to happen

  736. because they know

  737. that blood guilt

  738. can't be removed

  739. by a payment of money,

  740. but only by

  741. the shedding of blood.

  742. In other words,

  743. legal justice,

  744. as we've been considering

  745. already,

  746. legal justice

  747. for blood guilt

  748. is the payment of blood.

  749. Life for life.

  750. Just like Numbers 35 said,

  751. only blood can wash away blood.

  752. Only a life surrendered

  753. can pay for a life taken.

  754. You know,

  755. anything less

  756. is just legal fiction, right?

  757. It's just trying

  758. to cover it up.

  759. Now,

  760. I said before

  761. that you might have

  762. some questions

  763. about the way

  764. this ends up being done

  765. in 2 Samuel 21.

  766. You know,

  767. I think the question

  768. that we're asking,

  769. isn't it,

  770. is it right

  771. for these seven innocent sons

  772. or grandsons

  773. to die for the sin

  774. of their father

  775. or their grandfather?

  776. You know,

  777. after all,

  778. doesn't the Old Testament

  779. tell us that children

  780. shouldn't be made to pay

  781. for the sins

  782. of their parents?

  783. Now,

  784. in a way,

  785. that's one of those situations

  786. where our big question

  787. as we come to the Bible

  788. is not really the question

  789. the passage is answering,

  790. so we need to just be cautious.

  791. Really,

  792. there isn't,

  793. I don't think,

  794. an answer to that question.

  795. Some people,

  796. some scholars,

  797. you read and they tell you

  798. this is absolutely

  799. the right thing to do.

  800. Others are less convinced.

  801. You know,

  802. some people argue

  803. that maybe these seven sons,

  804. grandsons,

  805. were involved in the slaughter

  806. of the Gibeonites

  807. in some way.

  808. Others say there's no reason

  809. to think that God

  810. approves of their death

  811. and that David was just

  812. trying to knock off

  813. a few more of Saul's household.

  814. Now,

  815. what are you supposed to think?

  816. Well,

  817. it's worth bearing in mind

  818. that as horrific

  819. as the death of these

  820. seven innocent sons

  821. might sound,

  822. it's likely that Saul

  823. and his men

  824. killed more Gibeonites

  825. than seven.

  826. Probably more died

  827. in the famine as well.

  828. It's also worth remembering

  829. that we do still believe,

  830. don't we,

  831. in guilt by association.

  832. It's why,

  833. say,

  834. for example,

  835. Putin's family

  836. are being sanctioned

  837. even though they're not

  838. directly responsible

  839. for the war in Ukraine.

  840. But the reality is

  841. that actually that question

  842. is not really answered

  843. in the passage.

  844. And that's not because

  845. the Bible is deliberately vague

  846. or doesn't anticipate

  847. that you might ask it.

  848. The reason that that question

  849. is not answered

  850. in your passage

  851. this morning

  852. is because

  853. it's not the point.

  854. It's not the point.

  855. But what is the point?

  856. Well,

  857. the point is that

  858. the blood of the seven sons

  859. is,

  860. as it turns out,

  861. effective.

  862. It works.

  863. So Rizpah sits

  864. and waits for the fruits

  865. of the atonement

  866. as she waits

  867. for the rain to come

  868. and the rain does come.

  869. And God is referenced

  870. throughout the passage

  871. as being the one

  872. in front of whom

  873. the atonement is made.

  874. God is the one

  875. who is withholding the rains

  876. and God is the one

  877. who sends the rains

  878. at the end.

  879. God is the one

  880. who responds

  881. to the plea

  882. made in the bodies

  883. of these seven men.

  884. You see,

  885. this is the point.

  886. Atonement for blood guilt

  887. in 2 Samuel 21

  888. can only be made

  889. by the shedding of blood.

  890. The wages of sin

  891. is death.

  892. Now,

  893. ponder on that

  894. for a moment.

  895. If what we have said

  896. is true,

  897. if you and I

  898. stand on the brink

  899. of eternal death,

  900. of hell

  901. in judgment

  902. for the crime

  903. of stealing our lives

  904. and living them

  905. for our own glory,

  906. then atonement,

  907. cleansing,

  908. forgiveness,

  909. redemption,

  910. reconciliation,

  911. all those wonderful things

  912. can only be found

  913. if you can find

  914. someone who is willing

  915. to spill their blood

  916. for you.

  917. Because anything less

  918. is not justice.

  919. Let me tell you this morning,

  920. this is why religion

  921. is so mad.

  922. It's crazy, isn't it?

  923. Can you imagine

  924. the idea

  925. that God would be satisfied

  926. with you praying

  927. five times a day

  928. to cover over

  929. the sin

  930. of stealing your life?

  931. Wouldn't that be ridiculous?

  932. You know,

  933. that'd be like pulling up

  934. in the Mercedes van

  935. having ragged it down

  936. the A406

  937. and eaten all the food

  938. in the back of it

  939. and say,

  940. don't worry,

  941. I polished the number plate

  942. at the back.

  943. What?

  944. Is that going to atone

  945. for what you've done?

  946. Don't be utterly ridiculous.

  947. That's not justice.

  948. Oh, you know,

  949. I attended church.

  950. I read my Bible.

  951. I tried to be good.

  952. I was culturally a Christian.

  953. Anyone who asked me,

  954. I said I'm a Christian.

  955. Well, of course,

  956. that doesn't cover it,

  957. does it?

  958. If you are guilty

  959. of a bloodstain,

  960. you need to find someone

  961. who can spill

  962. their blood for you.

  963. Which brings us

  964. to the good news,

  965. doesn't it,

  966. of the passage?

  967. Which is that

  968. 1,500 years

  969. after these events,

  970. you find a bleeding man

  971. on a cross.

  972. The truly innocent son

  973. from heaven,

  974. God in human flesh.

  975. Not standing in a place

  976. of legal fiction

  977. or questionable justice,

  978. but planned in the mind

  979. of God

  980. from eternity past,

  981. where the sins

  982. of his people,

  983. their blood guilt,

  984. would be handed over

  985. to him.

  986. Literally,

  987. imputed,

  988. counted to,

  989. given to,

  990. Jesus Christ,

  991. so that the innocent son,

  992. the one who knew no sin,

  993. might on the cross

  994. be made sin for us,

  995. so that in him

  996. we might know

  997. righteousness,

  998. forgiveness,

  999. grace,

  1000. and mercy,

  1001. that the reins

  1002. of God's blessing

  1003. might fall on us,

1004. so that while the wages

  1005. of sin is death,

  1006. the gift of God

  1007. is eternal life

1008. in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  1009. This is what

  1010. the hymn writer means

  1011. when he says,

  1012. what riches of kindness

  1013. he lavished on us.

1014. His blood was the payment,

1015. his life was the cost.

1016. We stood neath a debt

  1017. we could never afford.

  1018. Our sins,

  1019. they are many,

  1020. his mercy is more.

1021. What can wash away my sin?

1022. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

1023. What can make me whole again?

1024. Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

1025. It's why when we come

  1026. in a moment

1027. to celebrate the Lord's Supper,

  1028. we will say,

1029. this cup is the new covenant

  1030. in my blood,

  1031. says Jesus.

1032. I spilt my blood for you

  1033. to wash you

  1034. of your blood guilt.

1035. The blood speaks of good news,

  1036. atonement and forgiveness,

1037. the way back from guilt.

1038. This then is the point

  1039. for us, isn't it?

  1040. 2 Samuel 21

1041. sort of jars on us

1042. because of the innocent death

  1043. of these seven sons

1044. for sins they didn't commit

1045. and it doesn't seem right.

1046. But the big story of the Bible,

1047. the story of the universe

1048. is of a true innocent son

  1049. spilling his blood

  1050. for you and me

1051. that we might be forgiven.

  1052. That's the story.

  1053. It was my sin

  1054. that held him there

  1055. until it was accomplished.

  1056. His dying breath

  1057. has brought me life.

1058. I know that it is finished.

  1059. Here's blood for me.

1060. Let me say this morning,

1061. if you have never trusted Christ,

1062. if you've never turned to him

  1063. and said,

  1064. Lord Jesus,

  1065. please wash me clean

  1066. with your blood.

1067. Please take away my sin

1068. that I might know you

  1069. and love you

  1070. and live for you.

1071. If you've never done that,

  1072. can I invite you

1073. to do that this morning?

  1074. Don't delay

  1075. and don't hesitate

  1076. and don't pretend

  1077. that you've done it

  1078. when you've not.

  1079. Turn to Jesus

  1080. and trust in him,

1081. his life for your life,

  1082. his death for yours.

  1083. And if you're a Christian

  1084. this morning,

  1085. 2 Samuel 21

  1086. serves, doesn't it,

  1087. as a joyous reminder

1088. that in the Lord Jesus

1089. all your blood guilt is gone.

1090. That in life and death

1091. you have nothing to fear

1092. because blood has been shed

  1093. to wash away

  1094. your blood guilt.

  1095. If you're a Christian

  1096. this morning

1097. and you're trusting in Christ,

  1098. it is impossible

1099. for God to condemn you

1100. because it would be unjust

1101. because blood has already been shed.

1102. the payment has already been paid

  1103. in Christ

1104. so you can be forgiven.

1105. So great floods of mercy

  1106. and showers of goodness

1107. might come down on us.

1108. And do you know what,

  1109. Christian, this morning,

  1110. this isn't a message

  1111. that you're supposed

  1112. to keep to yourself.

  1113. This is the news

1114. our world is desperate to hear

  1115. that there is freedom

  1116. and forgiveness found

1117. in the innocent blood of Jesus

  1118. shed for us

  1119. on our behalf.

  1120. Let me pray

1121. and then we'll sing together

  1122. as we respond.

1123. Let's just take a moment of silence

1124. and maybe you can respond

  1125. in your own hearts

1126. to something you want to say

  1127. to the Lord

  1128. turning to him.

  1129. Amen.

  1130. Amen.

  1131. Heavenly Father,

  1132. Heavenly Father,

  1133. I don't want to pretend

1134. that our sin doesn't matter,

  1135. that we're better

  1136. than we really are,

1137. that we have any hope

  1138. in ourselves

  1139. or our goodness

  1140. or our good works.

  1141. But we thank you

  1142. for the Lord Jesus

1143. who shed his blood for us

  1144. that we might be

  1145. fully,

  1146. freely,

  1147. forgiven,

1148. that we might be able

  1149. to live lives

  1150. for your praise

  1151. and your glory.

  1152. Thank you

  1153. that Jesus

  1154. has treated

  1155. the cause,

  1156. not just the symptoms,

  1157. giving himself

  1158. for us

  1159. in our place

1160. that he might make us

  1161. new people.

  1162. Please, Lord,

  1163. help us to continue

  1164. to delight

  1165. and find our joy

  1166. in Christ.

  1167. We rejoice

  1168. in what he's done

  1169. for us

  1170. and we thank you

  1171. for him.

  1172. Amen.
