  1. the book of Titus and chapter three.

  2. So the focus of our evening tonight

  3. is to hear from Daniel about the work of Open Doors

  4. and Liz, also one of our church members

  5. who volunteers with Open Doors,

  6. is going to be leading some of that time

  7. for us together as well.

  8. But before we hear from them

  9. and we pray for the work of Open Doors

  10. and get a chance to ask our questions about that,

  11. I want us to turn our attention

  12. just to a brief section from Titus

  13. chapter three.

  14. So let me read it, I'll pray

  15. and then we will just consider it together.

  16. So Titus chapter three, beginning at verse three.

  17. At one time, we too were foolish, disobedient,

  18. deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions

  19. and pleasures.

  20. We lived in malice and envy,

  21. being hated and hating one another,

  22. but when the kindness and love of God,

  23. our Saviour appeared,

  24. he saved us,

  25. not because of righteous things we had done,

  26. but because of his mercy.

  27. He saved us through the washing of rebirth

  28. and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

  29. whom he poured out on us generously

  30. through Jesus Christ, our Saviour,

  31. so that having been justified by his grace,

  32. we might become heirs,

  33. having the hope of eternal life.

  34. This is a trustworthy saying.

  35. I want you to stress these things

  36. so that those who have trusted in God

  37. may be careful to devote themselves

  38. to doing what is good.

  39. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

  40. But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies

  41. and arguments and quarrels about the law,

  42. because these are unprofitable and useless.

  43. Warn a divisive person once,

  44. then warn them a second time.

  45. After that, have nothing to do with them.

  46. You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful.

  47. They are self-condemned.

  48. Well, let's pray and ask for the Lord's help

  49. as we look at that passage together.

  50. Let's pray.

  51. Heavenly Father, we want to just thank you

  52. for your word to us

  53. and pray that you might help us now

  54. as we consider it together.

  55. We may be tired.

  56. We may be distracted by thoughts of tomorrow

  57. and what's happening.

  58. And we pray, please, that by your spirit,

  59. you might speak to us from your word

  60. and give us ears to hear, we pray.

  61. In Jesus' name, amen.

  62. My intention is not to delay us for super long,

  63. but I want us to set the scene for the rest of the evening

  64. by looking at this passage in Titus.

  65. And it will help you

  66. if you have the book open in front of you.

  67. I'm probably not going to tell you anything new.

  68. So much of what I say tonight is not groundbreaking,

  69. but it's probably just a reminder

  70. of things that you have heard before

  71. or might already know.

  72. I think it might help us just to start

  73. with a few facts about the book of Titus

  74. so that you know what we're looking at in that way.

  75. Titus is a letter from the apostle Paul

  76. to his friend called Titus.

  77. Okay, just one of you awake on the back row.

  78. Titus, who is working in a church in Crete.

  79. The church there seems to be planted

  80. at a point that we're not sure of

  81. and by a group of people who we're not sure of.

  82. And Paul and Titus have visited.

  83. And again, we're not sure exactly when they went.

  84. But whenever it was, Paul left Titus in Crete

  85. with his task of appointing elders in the church.

  86. So the church had started already,

  87. but it had no elders.

  88. And so Paul says to Titus in verse five of chapter one,

  89. I left you in Crete that you might put in order

  90. what was left unfinished by appointing elders.

  91. It's an interesting point there, isn't it?

  92. That basically churches without elders

  93. are kind of an unfinished job.

  94. But once they have elders, the task is really theirs

  95. to carry on with.

  96. And that's Titus's job.

  97. And what you've got really in this letter

  98. is a kind of job description from Paul to Titus

  99. about what he's to do in Crete

  100. in this appointment of elders.

  101. So it contains things like what you should look for

  102. in elders as you appoint them

  103. and recognize them in the church.

  104. What to get the church teaching to one another.

  105. How to deal with difficult or divisive people in the church.

  106. And so what you've got here really in the book of Titus

  107. and one Timothy and two Timothy are very similar as well.

  108. What you've got essentially is church 101, right?

  109. This is basic teaching of how to run

  110. and organize the life of a local church.

  111. Church at 101, what ministry is meant to be like

  112. and what you're supposed to do.

  113. Now, there is lots of detail here,

  114. but I'm going to oversimplify it

  115. and tell you essentially that Paul has one goal

  116. for the church and one method for the church.

  117. Okay, so he has one goal and one method.

  118. It is a slight oversimplification,

  119. but just run with me for a moment

  120. because I think it does help us.

  121. This is the one goal.

  122. What is the one goal of the local church?

  123. What is it they're aiming for?

  124. Well, the local church wants members

  125. to be devoted to doing what is good.

  126. You see that in the passage that we just read.

  127. Look at verse eight.

  128. So that those who have trusted God may be careful,

  129. here you go,

  130. to devote themselves to doing what is good.

  131. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

  132. If you glance your eyes back to chapter two, verse 12,

  133. you'll see it's the same there.

  134. saying no to ungodliness and worldly passions

  135. and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives

  136. in this present age while we wait for the blessed hope,

  137. the appearing of the glory of our great God and savior,

  138. Jesus Christ.

  139. This is what we want.

  140. We want people who are devoted to doing what is good.

  141. Those are excellent and profitable

  142. for everyone to be doing that.

  143. We want people to be living self-controlled

  144. and upright godly lives in this present age

  145. saying no to worldly passions.

  146. At the end of verse 14,

  147. we see this goal is not just Paul's personal agenda,

  148. but it is God's agenda for the church too.

  149. This is what Christ gave himself for.

  150. Chapter two, verse 14,

  151. Christ gave himself to purify for himself

  152. a people that are his very own,

  153. eager to do what is good.

  154. Eager to do what is good.

  155. In other words,

  156. Christ has rescued and saved a company of people

  157. with the commitment that they might live good lives,

  158. doing what is good,

  159. doing what is good.

  160. Now, although this is the one goal,

  161. still living like that is important,

  162. not only for its own sake,

  163. but also for the sake of those outside the church.

  164. These good lives are not inwardly looking lives.

  165. It's not that we live good lives like ornaments on display

  166. just for their own sake.

  167. Rather, the church members devoted to what is good

  168. is important for the witness to the world.

  169. So look at chapter two, verse 10,

  170. so that in every way,

  171. they will make the teaching about God,

  172. our savior, attractive.

  173. The negative is used in chapter one, verse 16,

  174. about people who claim to know God,

  175. but their actions deny him.

  176. They're detestable, disobedient,

  177. and unfit for doing anything good.

  178. Here it is that the church,

  179. by devoting themselves to doing good,

  180. is to display to the world the attractiveness

  181. of belonging to Jesus,

  182. of being his people.

  183. So here you have it.

  184. Paul wants, and Jesus wants,

  185. local churches full of people

  186. who are committed to doing what is good.

  187. And good in the broadest sense.

  188. So as you read through the letter,

  189. being good in the letter involves

  190. telling one another the truth,

  191. it involves loving one another,

  192. it involves being self-controlled,

  193. it involves not losing your temper,

  194. not being motivated by getting rich,

  195. not stealing from others,

  196. being concerned for the poor,

  197. concerned for one another,

  198. concerned for brothers and sisters in the world as well,

  199. who are persecuted,

  200. as we're thinking tonight.

  201. That's the goal.

  202. Now I want to suggest to you

  203. that no one can argue with that goal

  204. for a local church.

  205. That is a great thing.

  206. Everyone can see it's a good thing.

  207. Growing Christians who are reaching the world.

  208. That's the goal of every church

  209. in every place and every time.

  210. Grow Christians to reach the world.

  211. That's Church 101 in Titus.

  212. But the big question is how?

  213. How do you get that?

  214. How do you get a church full of Christians

  215. who are committed to doing what is good,

  216. displaying the greatness of Christ the world?

  217. Well, one answer might be

  218. you could run very strict churches, couldn't you?

  219. Maybe that's how you're to do it.

  220. Maybe you run churches where you tell everybody

  221. exactly what they're to do

  222. with every part of their lives.

  223. And you make them feel guilty

  224. when they don't do it.

  225. That's certainly been the method of some churches.

  226. The medieval Roman Catholic church

  227. was like that for sure.

  228. That's how it controlled people.

  229. Made them feel guilty

  230. and told them that if they didn't obey,

  231. terrible things would happen to them

  232. and their family.

  233. But that's not the method in Titus or Timothy

  234. in these pastoral epistles.

  235. Instead, here's Paul's method.

  236. It's Jesus's method really.

  237. It's there in chapter three, verse eight.

  238. You achieve this goal

  239. by stressing these things, verse eight.

  240. That's the goal is achieved

  241. by stressing these things.

  242. That's what he says, isn't it?

  243. In verse eight,

  244. this is a trustworthy saying

  245. and I want you to stress these things

  246. so that those who have trusted in God

  247. may be careful to devote themselves

  248. to doing what is good.

  249. What are these things?

  250. What is the trustworthy saying?

  251. Well, that then is the content

  252. of verses three to seven.

  253. So look at what's there.

  254. The thing to stress

  255. if you want church full of people

  256. devoted to doing what is good.

  257. Well, verse three,

  258. you need to stress the fact

  259. that the church is full of people

  260. who at one time were foolish,

  261. disobedient, deceived,

  262. and enslaved to their passions.

  263. Ouch.

  264. Stress this, says Paul.

  265. If you want a church

  266. that's going in the right direction,

  267. that's achieving the goal

  268. for which Christ has given himself,

  269. then stress that no one

  270. has joined the church

  271. by being perfect.

  272. Remind them of that.

  273. Remind them of that often,

  274. that the qualification

  275. for church membership

  276. is not perfection,

  277. but actually the qualification

  278. for belonging to the church

  279. is at one time

  280. having been a slave

  281. to your passions.

  282. Sinfulness.

  283. You are a sinner.

  284. There's more than that,

  285. though, isn't there?

  286. Because that's not

  287. the case anymore, is it?

  288. There is a,

  289. that is the past.

  290. But people enslaved

  291. to their passions

  292. and are not committed

  293. to living good lives.

  294. So what has changed?

  295. Look down at verse four.

  296. But when the kindness

  297. and love of God,

  298. our Savior, appeared,

  299. that's what's happened.

  300. The kindness

  301. and love of Jesus has appeared.

  302. Jesus came.

  303. And what is it that Jesus did?

  304. Well, verse five.

  305. He saved us.

  306. And how did he save us?

  307. Well, carrying on in verse five,

  308. look down.

  309. Not by the good things

  310. that we have done,

  311. but by his mercy.

  312. Mercy in washing.

  313. Rebirth and renewal,

  314. he calls it,

  315. making us new people

  316. by the Holy Spirit.

  317. The Holy Spirit

  318. who now, verse six,

  319. lives in us,

  320. given generously to us.

  321. Verse seven,

  322. summarized it, doesn't it,

  323. by being,

  324. calling us being justified

  325. by grace.

  326. In other words,

  327. declared not guilty

  328. before the God

  329. who made us

  330. by a function of his kindness

  331. and not our works.

  332. So that we are heirs

  333. of eternal life with him.

  334. And Paul says,

  335. verse eight,

  336. that is a trustworthy saying.

  337. It's a saying

  338. that the church must stress.

  339. So that, verse eight,

  340. people will devote themselves

  341. to doing what is good.

  342. And now,

  343. if I've lost you in the weeds,

  344. come back to it for a moment.

  345. Church 101,

  346. one goal,

  347. members devoted

  348. to living good lives

  349. that commend the gospel

  350. and one method,

  351. consistently stressing

  352. the gospel of grace

  353. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  354. That's it.

  355. That's what the local church

  356. is to do.

  357. One goal,

  358. that we might live good lives

  359. that commend the gospel

  360. to the world around us.

  361. one method

  362. by stressing continually

  363. the message

  364. of the gospel of grace

  365. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  366. reminding one another

  367. that we are not here

  368. because we're better

  369. than anybody else,

  370. but we are here

  371. because God has been kind

  372. to us in the Lord Jesus

  373. and has rescued us

  374. by his blood

  375. and his mercy alone.

  376. Now,

  377. I want to suggest to you

  378. that that is

  379. quite simple,

  380. right?

  381. That is not

  382. rocket science.

  383. You don't need to be

  384. a rocket scientist

  385. to understand that.

  386. One goal,

  387. one method,

  388. I think we probably

  389. all get that.

  390. But although it's not complex,

  391. it is, I think,

  392. quite hard

  393. and quite counterintuitive.

  394. So, in verse 9,

  395. you'll find that

  396. to stress the gospel

  397. like that means

  398. that you need to resist

  399. foolish arguments.

  400. And, Titus,

  401. you'll find that people

  402. love foolish arguments

  403. in the church.

  404. Stressing the gospel

  405. means resisting

  406. foolish arguments

  407. and people who would

  408. drag you away from it.

  409. Stressing the gospel

  410. means empowering men

  411. and women

  412. to teach one another

  413. in chapter 2.

  414. And that will be hard

  415. because as you read

  416. chapter 2,

  417. you find that life

  418. gets in the way.

  419. People would rather

  420. give themselves

  421. to other things

  422. than to teaching one another.

  423. And so,

  424. it will be difficult.

  425. Stressing the gospel

  426. means having leaders

  427. who,

  428. chapter 1,

  429. verse 9,

  430. hold firmly

  431. to the trustworthy messages

  432. that has been taught

  433. so that he can encourage

  434. others by sound doctrine

  435. and refute those

  436. who oppose it.

  437. In other words,

  438. you are going to have

  439. to train the leaders

  440. of the church

  441. to understand the gospel

  442. so that they might

  443. proclaim the gospel

  444. and that they might

  445. be able to refute people

  446. who are opposing the gospel.

  447. It's also hard,

  448. I think,

  449. because at times

  450. the tool will seem

  451. slow and ineffective.

  452. I think it will seem

  453. easier for Titus

  454. and maybe for the church

  455. in Crete

  456. and maybe even for us

  457. to use other tools

  458. rather than just

  459. the proclamation

  460. of the gospel.

  461. Maybe it's easier

  462. to guilt trip people

  463. into living

  464. what we consider good lives.

  465. Maybe it's easier

  466. for us to set rules.

  467. Maybe it's easier

  468. to browbeat people.

  469. Maybe it's easier

  470. to generate a culture

  471. of judgmentalism.

  472. Those might get you

  473. quick responses

  474. but the fact is

  475. none of those things

  476. have any transformative power.

  477. They're the operating tactics

  478. of dying churches.

  479. Living churches

  480. remind their members

  481. that they were sinners

  482. and that what changed

  483. was they encountered

  484. the grace of God

  485. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  486. He gave them new birth

  487. by the Spirit

  488. for his glory.

  489. And that is what

  490. makes us new people

  491. with new motives

  492. and new desires

  493. and new longings.

  494. So tonight

  495. what we're sort of

  496. setting out before us

  497. as a church

  498. is we want to be

  499. a church

  500. that is committed

  501. to doing good

  502. for the persecuted church

  503. around the world.

  504. How do you get a church

  505. to commit themselves

  506. to doing good

  507. for the persecuted church

  508. around the world?

  509. Let me tell you.

  510. You do it with the one method

  511. by stressing

  512. the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  513. None of us are here

  514. because we're perfect.

  515. We're here because

  516. we've encountered

  517. the grace of God

  518. in Jesus Christ

  519. and that will motivate us

  520. to do good

  521. to the worldwide church

  522. as we pray for

  523. and stand alongside

  524. those for whom

  525. following Christ

  526. is costing their lives.

  527. So we stress,

  528. don't we,

  529. the one tool

  530. of stressing the gospel.

  531. It's the only tool

  532. that we have

  533. for the liberation

  534. of ourselves

  535. from our selfish desires

  536. that we might live

  537. to the praise

  538. and glory of God.

  539. Well, let me pray

  540. and then we'll sing

  541. and then we will hand over

  542. to Daniel

  543. and to Liz.

  544. Let's pray.

  545. Heavenly Father,

  546. we want to be

  547. this kind of church

  548. full of people

  549. who devote themselves

  550. to doing

  551. what is good

  552. and so we pray

  553. that we might be

  554. a church

  555. that stresses

  556. this trustworthy saying

  557. that once we were foolish,

  558. enslaved

  559. to all kinds of passions

  560. and pleasures,

  561. living in malice

  562. and envy,

  563. being hated

  564. and hating one another,

  565. but

  566. we have encountered

  567. the Savior Jesus,

  568. not because of the good things

  569. that we have done,

  570. but because of his mercy,

  571. he has saved us

  572. and washed us

  573. by the Spirit

  574. that we might live lives now

  575. to your praise and glory

  576. doing what is good,

  577. excellent

  578. and profitable.

  579. Help us,

  580. we pray,

  581. to be that church.

  582. Help us especially

  583. to do that

  584. in response

  585. to the needs

  586. of the worldwide church.

  587. Bless the rest

  588. of our time together

  589. this evening

  590. as we hear

  591. how we might do that.

  592. in Jesus' name.

  593. Amen.

  594. Amen.

  595. Instead of Steve,

  596. talking to Daniel,

  597. I just want to say

  598. a little bit about

  599. why I'm here

  600. and then I'm going to

  601. introduce you to Daniel

  602. who is going to ask,

  603. is going to answer

  604. a couple of questions

  605. and then tell us

  606. a little bit more

  607. about Open Doors.

  608. So,

  609. I have volunteered

  610. to work with Open Doors

  611. as an advocate,

  612. so it's part

  613. of the advocacy team

  614. and that requires

  615. us

  616. or me

  617. to get you

  618. and others

  619. to really take

  620. the role seriously

  621. to understand

  622. what the persecuted church

  623. is all about

  624. and for us

  625. to be able

  626. to write

  627. to our local MPs

  628. and for Open Doors

  629. to send me information

  630. and for me

  631. on behalf of Open Doors

  632. to talk

  633. about the situation.

  634. And so really

  635. the whole idea

  636. is that we

  637. as Christians,

  638. part of the whole body

  639. of Christ,

  640. see

  641. not just our brothers

  642. and sisters

  643. as people over

  644. in Africa

  645. or in India

  646. or in Sudan

  647. or in other places

  648. that are far off

  649. but actually see

  650. that we are part

  651. of the body of Christ

  652. and that together

  653. we are going to

  654. not just pray for them

  655. but do things

  656. that are practical

  657. which will enable

  658. MPs to speak

  659. on our behalf

  660. and have influence

  661. on people

  662. in other governments

  663. across the world.

  664. So that's why I'm here

  665. because that's

  666. hopefully my role

  667. it's a volunteer role

  668. about three times a year

  669. I think it is

  670. to represent

  671. Open Doors.

  672. So that's me

  673. for now.

  674. So this is Daniel

  675. and so Daniel

  676. is the parliamentary

  677. officer

  678. for Open Doors.

  679. UK and Ireland

  680. and I'm going to

  681. just tell us

  682. a little bit

  683. about yourself

  684. that's the first question

  685. and the second question

  686. why Open Doors

  687. when there are

  688. quite a few

  689. other

  690. organisations

  691. that deal

  692. with the persecuted

  693. church.

  694. Open Doors

  695. is hiring?

  696. No I'm joking.

  697. A little bit

  698. about myself.

  699. So my name is Daniel

  700. I'm the parliamentary

  701. officer for

  702. Open Doors

  703. UK and Ireland.

  704. I did that

  705. full time

  706. for about

  707. two and a half years

  708. and I now

  709. do that

  710. three days a week

  711. and I serve

  712. a couple of days a week

  713. with another

  714. ministry

  715. Jews for Jesus

  716. from a Jewish

  717. background.

  718. I'm married

  719. I've been married

  720. almost five years

  721. my wife's American

  722. she also works

  723. for a church

  724. so we're a proper

  725. Christian family

  726. as you can see

  727. I'm joking

  728. and one of my

  729. favourite passages

  730. in the Bible

  731. is Titus

    Titus 3 chapter mention

  732. chapter 3

  733. so I'm really pleased

  734. to have heard that

  735. this morning

  736. as God's really

  737. used it to encourage

  738. me in my walk

  739. why Open Doors

  740. so I heard

  741. when I was

  742. gosh maybe

  743. 17 or 18

  744. a speaker

  745. come and speak

  746. at my church

  747. about the work

  748. of Open Doors

  749. and I was really

  750. touched

  751. that they

  752. cared about

  753. both the

  754. physical health

  755. you know

  756. with humanitarian aid

  757. and food

  758. and water

  759. and things like that

  760. of the people

  761. to whom they

  762. were ministering

  763. and the spiritual health

  764. and that both of those

  765. were as essential

  766. if not the spiritual health

  767. being more essential

  768. to Open Doors

  769. and there were

  770. it sort of felt

  771. with lots of other

  772. organisations

  773. that you had to choose

  774. either to support

  775. people through

  776. material

  777. aid

  778. or spiritual aid

  779. like the Bible

  780. and church networks

  781. and things like that

  782. and Open Doors

  783. seemed to marry

  784. the two very well

  785. so I worked

  786. in politics

  787. for some years

  788. in sort of

  789. standard secular politics

  790. and so when the

  791. opportunity came up

  792. to combine

  793. my experience

  794. in theology

  795. and in ministry

  796. with my experience

  797. in politics

  798. you know

  799. it was a real

  800. opportunity

  801. that you know

  802. the Lord

  803. blessed me

  804. to sort of

  805. walk into

  806. okay

  807. can I just ask

  808. one other question

  809. sure

  810. we know that

  811. there are 100

  812. and I think

  813. 195 countries

  814. in the world

  815. and of those

  816. the world watch list

  817. list 50

  818. I don't know

  819. if you're aware

  820. of that

  821. 50 countries

  822. in the world

  823. that are high

  824. or extremely high

  825. in terms of persecution

  826. so 195

  827. 50 countries

  828. that's just

  829. over 25%

  830. of countries

  831. that suffer

  832. very high

  833. persecution

  834. are there

  835. any particular

  836. countries

  837. that are

  838. close to

  839. your personal

  840. heart

  841. or that's

  842. very close

  843. to Open Doors

  844. yeah I think

  845. the countries

  846. that have really

  847. sort of

  848. stuck with me

  849. are Nigeria

  850. I've done a lot

  851. of work on Nigeria

  852. and some of the

  853. stories you hear

  854. from Nigeria

  855. I mean frankly

  856. they're the most

  857. brutal and the most

  858. unpleasant

  859. often

  860. they're the ones

  861. where you sort of

  862. go okay I need to

  863. step away from my

  864. desk for a moment

  865. India

  866. has stuck with me

  867. I suppose partly

  868. because it's not

  869. a country you'd

  870. expect to have a

  871. large amount of

  872. persecution

  873. India

  874. I've spent a lot

  875. of time with

  876. North Koreans

  877. recently and

  878. they all have

  879. quite incredible

  880. stories

  881. North Korea is

  882. obviously a

  883. fascinating country

  884. you know

  885. so North Korea

  886. is very important

  887. to me as well

  888. and what about

  889. Open Doors

  890. as an organisation

  891. are there sort

  892. of you know

  893. countries that

  894. would flag up

  895. to say you know

  896. these are the

  897. main countries

  898. that we when we

  899. meet in groups

  900. later on

  901. so we will be

  902. talking about the

  903. top 10 countries

  904. but I think

  905. outside of the

  906. top 10 as well

  907. you know

  908. increasingly

  909. concerning is

  910. India which is

  911. at number 11

  912. China which is

  913. at number 19

  914. Nikolagra which

  915. has shot up the

  916. list from 50 to

  917. 30 or something

  918. after imprisoning

  919. a large amount

  920. of bishops

  921. and then exiling

  922. them

  923. so those are

  924. countries which

  925. aren't we aren't

  926. going to discover

  927. India I will

  928. briefly discuss

  929. but are countries

  930. to remember in your

  931. prayers

  932. so I'm going to

  933. hand over to you

  934. to do a bit

  935. and what will

  936. happen after that

  937. is that there will

  938. be an opportunity

  939. for questions and

  940. answers

  941. questions and

  942. answers

  943. yeah that's it

  944. so you can ask us

  945. questions about the

  946. work of Open Doors

  947. but Daniel obviously

  948. will answer

  949. nearly all of them

  950. and then we'll

  951. break up into

  952. groups as we

  953. normally do to

  954. pray specifically

  955. about the work

  956. thank you thank

  957. you so much

  958. so firstly my

  959. first question

  960. you see you never

  961. know when you go

  962. into a church the

  963. level of knowledge

  964. and it seems like

  965. the level of

  966. knowledge is very

  967. high here so I'm

  968. not sure I'm going

  969. to inform you of

  970. anything but I'll

  971. do my best I'll

  972. tell you some good

  973. stories but I'm

  974. going to ask has

  975. anyone heard of

  976. the world watch

  977. list I suspect the

  978. answer may be yes

  979. yes okay good

  980. so the world watch

  981. list is sort of

  982. the flagship research

  983. project of Open

  984. Doors which has

  985. been going on since

  986. 1993 and details

  987. the worst places in

  988. the world to be a

  989. Christian it's

  990. fortunate that we

  991. really trust is a

  992. resource and it's a

  993. resource that's used

  994. by governments

  995. across the world to

  996. help inform policy

  997. and shape the way

  998. that aid is

  999. delivered and things

  1000. like that so before

  1001. I'm going to show

  1002. you a brief video

  1003. about the top 10

  1004. countries but before

1005. I do that the only

  1006. bit of audience

  1007. participation I'll

  1008. ask for what do

  1009. you guys might know

  1010. this as well no

  1011. no hints less but

  1012. what countries do you

1013. think might be in the

  1014. top 10 the hardest

1015. places in the world to

  1016. be a Christian North

  1017. Korea any others

  1018. Somalia okay South

  1019. Korea sorry Eritrea okay

  1020. Iran Iran okay okay

1021. yeah yeah okay any any

1022. others any any more for

1023. any more before we see

  1024. the answers sorry

  1025. Bangladesh okay

  1026. interesting I don't think

  1027. I've ever you know I

  1028. don't think I've ever

  1029. had Bangladesh that's a

  1030. really interesting one

  1031. well let's watch the

1032. video and see if any of

  1033. those countries come up

1034. oh one more slide there

  1035. you go

1036. could praying put you in

  1037. danger could go into

  1038. church risk your life

  1039. could following Jesus cost

1040. you your job your home or

  1041. your family around the

  1042. world today our Christian

  1043. brothers and sisters are

1044. counting the cost of their

1045. faith and these are the 10

1046. countries where the price of

  1047. following Jesus is highest

  1048. number 10 Afghanistan the

  1049. Taliban hunts for hidden

  1050. networks of believers

  1051. suspected Christians can be

  1052. arrested interrogated and even

1053. killed and number nine Iran

1054. house churches are seen as a

  1055. threat to national security

  1056. pastor Anushivan has started

  1057. serving a 10-year prison sentence

1058. after 30 agents raided his home

1059. Sudan is at number eight in the

1060. chaos and conflict of civil war

  1061. Christians are especially

  1062. vulnerable believers have been

1063. attacked their property looted and

  1064. churches closed number seven

  1065. Pakistan Pakistani Christians are

1066. seen as second-class citizens false

1067. accusations of blasphemy result in

  1068. innocent believers facing mob

1069. violence Christian girls continue to

1070. be abducted and forced to convert to

1071. Islam Nigeria is at number six more

1072. Christians are killed for their faith

1073. in Nigeria than in all the other

1074. countries of the world combined

1075. pastor Zachariah came home one day to

1076. find his village attacked and his wife

1077. and son murdered by militants number

1078. five Yemen the very small number of

1079. Yemeni Christians must worship in

1080. secret house church leader Salah is on

1081. the wanted list but despite death

1082. threats he courageously continues his

1083. ministry at number four is Eritrea

  1084. Christian activities are severely

1085. restricted when Abdullah told people

1086. about Jesus he was sent to prison the

1087. conditions were so terrible that he never

1088. came out alive Libya is number three on

1089. the list Libya considers itself to be a

  1090. completely Islamic nation Libyan

1091. believers who tell others about Jesus

1092. risk arrest and violent opposition

1093. number two Somalia in this highly

1094. restrictive Islamic society even the

1095. suspicion of being a Christian is

1096. extremely dangerous converts who are

1097. discovered may instantly pay with their

1098. lives and at number one North Korea

1099. this remains the most costly place in the

1100. world to be a Christian even owning a

1101. Bible is illegal Jiho's father was taken

1102. away when security agents discovered his

1103. secret book she never saw him again

1104. Christians are sent to appalling labor

1105. camps or simply killed on the spot

1106. more than 365 million Christians face high

1107. levels of persecution and discrimination

1108. that's one in seven Christians globally and

1109. every one of them a son or daughter a

1110. mother a father a child of God for nearly 70

1111. years open doors has been supporting our

1112. persecuted church family helping them to

1113. stand strong they are counting the cost of

1114. following Christ and with your help they can

1115. keep believing knowing that Jesus is

  1116. worth everything

1117. so as you can see this paints a fairly

1118. sobering picture of the state of the

1119. world for many of our brothers and

1120. sisters and I don't want to share these

1121. stories just for sort of just because it's

1122. interesting or for some sort of voyeuristic

1123. thrill but because I hope that it

1124. encourages your faith and it's certainly

1125. encouraged mine and challenged my faith as

1126. well so briefly just before we start I do

1127. want to mention that I've shied away from

1128. some of the less than pleasant stories but

1129. some of these still will be quite heavy so do

1130. please bear that in mind firstly a little bit

1131. about the world watch list so open doors

1132. researchers on the ground use first second

1133. and third hand sources to verify allegations

1134. of persecution against Christians so we need

1135. to remember when we look at these numbers that

1136. they are vastly underestimated a colleague of

1137. mine just got back from Nigeria and told me how much he believes they are

1138. underestimated by so if a report of persecution

1139. could not be verified by an outside organization is not included

1140. now you may have seen in the video that more people die for their faith in

1141. Nigeria than anywhere else in the world and you may be thinking well why is it

1142. not number one then and it's true 89 percent of those killed for their faith

1143. are killed in Nigeria on average 14 Christians are killed for their faith

1144. every day so in fact let me tell you briefly about one girl before I move on

1145. who you may have heard of and this is again on the lighter end of the

1146. spectrum of what happens in Nigeria her name was Deborah Samuel or

1147. Deborah Emmanuel depending on how you understand her name

1148. she was a young girl from a school in northern Nigeria and she was part of a

1149. class whatsapp group and after her exams she posted or a

1150. student sorry posted asking how everyone had done in the exams

1151. and Deborah posted that she wanted to thank Jesus that she had done well

1152. as a result of that she was dragged out by some boys in her class and stoned to

1153. death because she had committed blasphemy in

1154. their eyes and they were filmed doing this and the videos are over social media

1155. you can see them and the police have seen these videos and not one of those

1156. individuals have been arrested by the Nigerian police force so this is an

1157. example of what we call in the methodology the smash so this is the smash of

1158. persecution the outright violence and then we also have something that we

1159. call the squeeze and this is those daily forms of persecution

1160. like financial educational and health exclusion or community ostracism that make

1161. up these sort of more pervasive forms of persecution so the world watch list

1162. takes into account the smash the outright violence as well as the squeeze the

1163. sort of daily grind the christians face around the world as well as things like

1164. population sizes now i'm delighted to say that this is well received the world

1165. watch this last year the parliamentary launch we had over a hundred members of

1166. parliament from across every party when i say every party we even had

1167. andrew bridgen who briefly started his own party reform parties you may remember

1168. before losing his seat so we have literally every party exception fame but what can you do

1169. anyway um god has in his mercy used this world watch list as a way of sharing the

1170. stories around the world now earlier we heard a passage um written by paul to titus

1171. and many of the early christians that paul wrote to experienced persecution and it can be easy for us to

1172. assume that this is something of the past but it is really not for the vast majority of the world so i

1173. want to tell you briefly about a friend of mine timothy cho now timothy is from north korea he's the first north

1174. korean in this country to receive a master's degree he works in parliament he works for cchq as well and

1175. he stood for election for the conservative party um now when he was born he was born when kim il-sung

1176. was still the leader of north korea so the founder of the north korean state and when timothy told me that

1177. when kim il-sung died the first thing that he did was to ask his father when he would die because he assumed

1178. kim il-sung is his god he receives life from his god and so his god's dead he must be dead

1179. timothy uh who is now christian he was put in in a concentration camp eventually and he was tortured in

1180. horrendous ways and regularly beaten and he still bears the scars of this on his body and frankly on his

1181. his mind and spirit to this day um one of the things that open doors partners do around the

1182. world including in north korea is to get people bibles that they can understand in their own language

1183. and i've heard stories from north korean women who are in these labor camps where they work all day

1184. intense hours and they've buried a bible by a tree or something in the camp and they risk their lives to

1185. leave the the dormitories where they're kept in the middle of the night to get their bible and to pray

1186. quietly one with another and to sing to whisper the words of a song and to study the bible together

1187. instead of sleeping i think you know if i was working that amount of time i'd probably be like ah you know

1188. maybe another time i'd easily sleep but no they have the faith to get up in the middle of the night

1189. and do that and even if they manage to escape um you know before they're killed um you know it's it's

1190. a miracle it is a miracle and open doors helps to facilitate people when they can escape by providing

1191. them safety in in neighboring countries and ways out of danger so in the ancient roman days that we just

1192. read a document from many of the caesars were regarded as gods and i just googled actually when

1193. titus was written it was written under the reign of emperor nero who was very much regarded as a god

1194. and we can think of a time where leaders of countries are regarded as gods as being long dead but in north

1195. korea that is still very much the case i remember reading a story of a north korean man in every north

1196. korean home you need to have a wall which has a picture of the three leaders and nothing else can be

1197. on this wall and you can get inspected and this man a flood hit his house and he saved the two most

1198. important things in the world to him which was his baby daughter and a picture of kim il-sung and

1199. as the door opened a wave hit him and he felt the picture begin to slip and he let go of his baby

1200. daughter and he saved the portrait of kim il-sung and he was given a medal and paraded as a national

1201. hero similar things have happened in other countries and in china i was speaking to a chinese man recently

1202. who was six years old when chairman mao died and he recalled to me believing that chairman mao was god

1203. he said twice a day every day him and his classmates were hauled before a portrait of chairman mao and

1204. forced to silently confess their sins against him the party and the state and they had to vow to do better

1205. in the future in a sort of parody of faith now you may wonder how it's possible that christians can

1206. survive and the light of christ can remain in such darkness but as it did under nero so it does today

1207. under xi jinping and kim yong un in china today there are more christians more members of illegal

1208. christian churches than there are members of the communist party so this year open doors launched

1209. its arise africa campaign which i think uh liz has done a wonderful job of of getting you to sign

1210. and it will be a multi-year campaign focused on sub-saharan africa now i've just briefly briefly

1211. touched on nigeria as i say nigeria is the place you're most likely to die for your faith most

1212. likely to be kidnapped for your faith the level of persecution in this part of the world is unimaginable

1213. we're talking uh tens of millions displaced tens of thousands hundreds of thousands murdered and in

1214. long-term kidnap and i want to show you one brief story from a guy called manga who i met just a couple of

1215. just a couple of weeks ago in northern ireland uh we had to do a speech together he gave his story

1216. this incredible testimony i'll share a little bit of it and then i had to stand up and talk about

1217. government works i felt a little bit uh i was like how do i follow that couldn't i go on first anyway

1218. um he told the story and i will i'll i'll take it down a little bit because it's a hard story

1219. he was he didn't take his faith very seriously he lived in northern nigeria and one day boko

1220. haram came to his house and they demanded everything in his house that was expensive you

1221. know that was worth anything and then they beat his mother in front of him and left her for dead

1222. and they took him and his brother and his father outside and um i won't get into detail because it

1223. is pretty horrific but they they believe that the more they cause christians to suffer uh the greater

1224. glory they receive so you know do with that what you will but they asked his father and brother to

1225. renounce their faith and they didn't and they were killed brutally and he realized at that moment as he

1226. watched his father die it's what he told me that his life flashed before his eyes and he saw his sin

1227. and he saw that he had not taken his faith seriously and he repented on the spot

1228. and they came to him and they said uh will you renounce your faith and he said no i will die as

1229. a christian and they began to kill him again in a long and very unpleasant way and as they were

1230. doing this the lord's prayer ran through his head and he said he got to the point where it says father

1231. forgive them for they know not what they do and he realized he needed to forgive these people who were

1232. killing him while they were killing him and so he did he prayed in his head uh father forgive them

1233. for they know not what they do those famous words of our lord and he said that moment the pain stopped

1234. unimaginable pain stopped and they left him for dead they believed they killed him

1235. he lost an incredible amount of blood was rushed to hospital and died in the hospital and you know by

1236. god's grace miraculously um was resuscitated and came back and survived and has incredible scarring now

1237. he was actually taken out of the area because the extremists found out he was alive and continued

1238. hunting for him and open doors took him out of that area and helped him with counseling um trauma

1239. counseling safe networks and that sort of stuff and you hear stories like this across the region of africa

1240. now there's one other brief thing i want to touch on which is what we call digital persecution and

1241. it's defined well i define it as the use of new and emerging technologies as a tool of persecution so

1242. a couple of years ago open doors held a digital persecution conference the result of which was a

1243. document which you can find on our website which the with the universities of birmingham and rohampton

1244. and we found that there were three major ways in which new technologies are used to persecute which is

1245. surveillance disinformation and censorship now where ai is a concern for many people around the world

1246. not many are thinking about the impact on already marginalized groups so of course it's not just

1247. christians that face persecution i do want to briefly touch on one example of a non-christian group because

1248. it's it shows us the extent to which this technology can be used and that's the uyghurs in china who are not

1249. christian most of which are muslim but there are a minority of whom uh that are christian they live in in a

1250. digital police state cameras have facial technology facial recognition technology and technology that

1251. can recognize your ethnicity based on markers they're constantly tracked through their phones

1252. and daily go through these big integrated gates that take all the data from your phone and analyze it

1253. all by ai and then the ai ranks you according to a traffic light system green normal surveillance amber

1254. maybe you get a camera put in your home maybe you get a you know bug put in your home and red you're

1255. arrested the system tells the police to arrest you and then the ai interviews you it measures your heart

1256. rate it measures your blood pressure it measures all sorts of things and if it determines that you

1257. are guilty you're then sent to a re-education or labor camp now china is using xinjiang this region

1258. where the uyghurs live as a showroom for the world's dictators and uyghurs are being used to show off

1259. their authoritarian wares to the rest of the world and it's alleged that chinese technology has been

1260. used against lots of people including christians as far as north korea iran myanmar and russia

1261. likewise in china when uh during covid when when churches met um online the equivalent of zoom uh

1262. listened out for words like jesus and christ and christian and if these occurred repeatedly would

1263. shut down the meeting the only place you can get an online uh version of the bible the the characters

1264. for christ and christian have been replaced in india disinformation spreads like wildfire christians

1265. are frequently accused of forcibly converting people and of being cow murderers um there was a local

1266. pastor only 21 years old and he was accused of um there was some villagers came became ill and he was

1267. accused of using christian witchcraft against them and they killed him in a brutal way and it turned out

1268. to be uh the water was infected but this lie spread so fast that the newspapers reported it as true that

1269. this christian witch was doing this in manipul last year one social media lie led to 240 churches being

1270. burned down the public sexual assault of at least five christian women the deaths of many and the

1271. displacement of tens of thousands there are still 20 000 people living in camps supplied by organizations

1272. like open doors because they face persecution in the mainstream camps so what can you do and i'll wrap up

1273. here what can you do the first thing that you can do uh as manipul there the first thing that you can do is to give

1274. um obviously none of this work is free and unlike many other charities open doors is entirely funded by

1275. churches by people like you we take no government money and have no corporate backers if you want to

1276. give you can come and chat with me afterwards you can chat with liz chat with your pastor you can chat with

1277. whoever but do come and chat and the second thing you can do is act and liz has touched on this so i won't

1278. hammer the point home because i want some time for some questions but you you are your boss's mp right

1279. uh you you are your mp's boss other way around you are your mp's boss they do what you say i remember

1280. once a guy coming down to meet me an mp he had a stack of letters from open door and he put them on

1281. table he said how do i make this stop that you did that right we get 101 mps turn up to open doors

1282. world watch it's the largest ngo event in parliament i mean that's incredible i went to another comparable

1283. charity's launch of their report last week and they had three which is a very respectable number for an ngo

1284. god has graced us with 101 and he's done it through people like you so talk to your mp um you can talk

1285. to me about doing that talk to liz about doing that and finally pray which is the most important one and

1286. we'll be doing that later prayer changes the world if you take nothing away from this except this i'll be

1287. happy pray if your family who are persecuted again we have ways of doing this we we have a free um

1288. prayer journal that i can sign you up for at the back uh if you want to chat afterwards um

1289. um and and remember that they pray for you whenever we speak to persecuted christians they ask for

1290. prayer and they say they pray for the western church which never ceases to amaze me um but i will stop

  1291. there

  1292. you

  1293. you

  1294. you

  1295. you

  1296. you

  1297. you

  1298. you

  1299. you
