  1. Mark chapter 10 and Mona is going to come and read for us.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  2. Good morning church. Okay so we're reading Mark 10 and we're going from verse 35.

  3. Then James and John the sons of Zebedee came to him. Teacher, they said, we want you to do for us

  4. whatever we ask. What do you want me to do for you? He asked. They replied, let one of us sit at your

  5. right and the other at your left in your glory. You don't know what you are asking, Jesus said.

  6. Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with? We can, they

  7. answered. Jesus said to them, you will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am

  8. baptized with. But to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those

  9. for whom they have been prepared. When the 10 heard about this, they became

  10. indignant with James and John. Jesus called them together and said, you know that those who are

  11. regarded as rulers of the Gentiles, Lord, is over them and their high officials exercise authority

  12. over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant

  13. and whoever wants to be first must be slave for all. For even the son of man did not come to be

  14. served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. Then they came to Jericho as Jesus and his

  15. disciples together with a large crowd were leaving the city. A blind man, Barthelomus, which means son of

  16. Timaeus was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to

  17. shout, Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me. Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted

  18. all the more, son of David, have mercy on me. Jesus stopped and said, call him. So they called to the

  19. blind man, cheer up on your feet, he's calling you. Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet

  20. and came to Jesus. What do you want me to do for you? Jesus asked him. The blind mind said, Rabbi,

  21. I want to see. Go, said Jesus. Your faith has healed you. Immediately he received his sight

  22. and followed Jesus along the road. Amen. Well, good morning. It's great to be back. Thanks for

  23. having me back. It's a great joy to be able to come and open up God's words with you this morning. So

  24. shall we pray? Let's pray and let's ask that God would speak this morning. Father, thank you for these

  25. precious words, this extraordinary gospel of Mark and all it shows us about Jesus. And we ask this

  26. morning that you'd help us to have hearts that are set on Jesus, that our minds would understand,

  27. that our eyes would see him more clearly, and that we might be transformed by his beautiful power.

  28. Father, and we ask it in his name. Amen. I think that was a longer reading than perhaps we normally

  29. used to. I think often we just look at one little part of the Bible or one little part of the gospel.

  30. But what I want to do this morning is take these two accounts, which Mark has put next to each other,

  31. and try and think, why do they go together? Why do these two things happen next to each other?

  32. And what I want to show you is what an extraordinary teacher Jesus is. I think even if you're not really

  33. sure what you believe about Jesus, even if you're here and you're not a Christian, I still think it isn't

  34. hard to see that he is an extraordinary teacher who has turned our world upside down. And the brilliant

  35. thing about Jesus is that he's so simple in what he teaches, and yet so profound. He doesn't need

  36. kind of high-faluting philosophy. He doesn't need clever and complex doctrine. He uses the simplest of

  37. words to completely expose our hearts. In fact, Jesus uses one question, one question, which I think

  38. completely shows up what's happening inside each of us. The question came up twice in the reading that

  39. we've just had. I don't know if you noticed it. Here is the question. What do you want me to do for you?

  40. Jesus asks that question twice. And as he asks it, he shows up what is really going on in the human

  41. heart. So we're going to think about this one question, and we're going to think about the two

  42. answers that Jesus gets, and we're going to try and understand what that shows us about our own hearts

  43. and about the magnificence of Jesus. But let's think about the question, first of all, what do you want

  44. me to do for you? That's the question Jesus asks. He asks it to James and John, his disciples. Then he

  45. asks it to this blind man, Bartimaeus, what do you want me to do for you? I think that's a strange

  46. question. And the reason I think it's a strange question and might puzzle us is because it's a

  47. servant's question. That's what a servant asks. What do you want me to do for you?

  48. The person who asks that question is not the person in power, but the person who is being,

  49. who has to serve, whose job it is to do something. And so we might expect Jesus to come along and say,

  50. this is what I want you to do for me. But instead he comes and says, what do you want me to do for you?

  51. That's surprising. It's surprising because I think we often imagine that being a Christian is about me

  52. serving Jesus. He's the great King of Kings and Lord of Lords. And my job is to serve him. Well,

  53. what you need to understand is before you can ever serve Jesus, he first needs to serve you.

  54. that's where it starts. And that's what he says in the middle of this passage. So just look with me,

  55. verse 45. It's one of the key verses in the whole of Mark's gospel. Here it is. Jesus says,

  56. even the son of man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  57. We have to understand that Jesus came to serve.

  58. It's strange because he uses this phrase son of man.

  59. When he talks about son of man, he's referring to himself, but it's a loaded term.

  60. It's like a code name, son of man. When I was younger, I was in a gang,

  61. well, they're not a, I mean, there's only two of us. Um,

  62. it was me and my friend, Steven Gower. We weren't really a gang, but we thought we were,

  63. we were, we thought we were pretty cool. And we had, we had code names because we thought that

  64. it's quite embarrassing admitting it out. But anyway, we had code names. And the idea was that

  65. the code name told you something about what we thought we were. My code name in our gang

  66. was falcon fighter. I don't think it accurately described me, but I think it described what I

  67. aspired to be. Well, this name son of man is like a code name. It tells you something about Jesus.

  68. But in order to understand what son of man means, you need to go back, go back to where this term

  69. has been used earlier in the Bible. In particular, back to a prophet called Daniel.

  70. An extraordinary story of Daniel in the Old Testament. Daniel, a man who lived at a very

  71. hard time when God's people were taken in exile, that he was living in Babylon, he was living far

  72. from home. He'd been there for 70 years, spent all his life away as a exile.

  73. And while Daniel was there in exile, he had a vision,

  74. an extraordinary vision. He saw the ancient of days, God himself on a throne. And it was like a

  75. courtroom and the books were opened up, a scene of magnificent power. Can you picture it?

  76. The ancient of days. His hair was white like wool. He was blazing with glory.

  77. And Daniel is there looking at this great vision. And then into this throne room comes someone else.

  78. One who looks like a son of man. That is one who has a human appearance. One walking in as a human

  79. being walks into this courtroom. A son of man.

  80. And in Daniel's vision, what happens is that as the son of man comes into the courtroom,

  81. the son of man is given all glory and sovereign power and all the nations of the world worship him.

  82. Wow.

  83. You don't need to know much about the Bible to know that there is only one that you worship. Only one.

  84. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not worship any other god, God says.

  85. Which means that this son of man who all the nations are going to worship,

  86. this son of man approaching the ancient of days must be God.

  87. Because you only worship God.

  88. So here's this scene that's unfolding.

  89. You've got to imagine Daniel, right?

  90. Imagine Daniel. He's there in exile and he sees this thing unfolding.

  91. Do you not imagine his heart beating faster?

  92. It's like, who is that?

  93. Who is this figure who can walk into the presence of the ancient of days and receive worship?

  94. Who could that possibly be?

  95. Daniel's like on tiptoe trying to see who is it?

  96. Who is it?

  97. And Daniel never fully gets the answer in his lifetime.

  98. Because it would be another nearly 500 years.

  99. But for a man walking by the sea of Galilee says,

  100. the son of man is me.

  101. Jesus, when he takes the phrase son of man,

  102. is using that name,

  103. which means he is the man who is God to be worshipped.

  104. So do you not feel, right?

  105. Come on, we've got to get into this, right?

  106. Do you not feel the crunch when it says,

  107. the son of man,

  108. that son of man of all glory, wisdom, and sovereign power,

  109. that son of man did not come to be served,

  110. but to serve and to give his life.

  111. Right?

  112. There is the crunch.

  113. You've got to feel, right?

  114. That's the,

  115. that is the great paradox at the very heart of what we believe as Christians,

  116. that the great son of man gave his life on a cross.

  117. That the Messiah was crucified.

  118. And so when Jesus asks the question,

  119. what do you want me to do for you?

  120. It's an extraordinary question,

  121. because it tells you that this son of man came to serve.

  122. And look at the extent to which he came to serve.

  123. Even to give his life as a ransom for men.

  124. Humanity is in a desperate, desperate plight.

  125. In a place of deep, deep darkness and slavery.

  126. And Jesus came in order to pay the price,

  127. to bring us out of darkness and slavery to sin,

  128. in order that we might be rescued,

  129. that we might be taken from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light,

  130. from the kingdom of shame to the kingdom of freedom,

  131. from the kingdom of slavery,

  132. to the kingdom of being children of God.

  133. He gave his life as a ransom.

  134. And so Jesus is rightly called the servant king.

  135. He comes to serve.

  136. So this question, what do you want me to do for you?

  137. It shows you something.

  138. It takes you to the very heart of the identity of Jesus.

  139. He is the servant who comes to serve.

  140. Even lost sinners like us.

  141. So there's the question.

  142. But what is our response?

  143. When Jesus says to us,

  144. what do you want me to do for you?

  145. How do you respond?

  146. Because what you think you want Jesus to do for you

  147. will show you what's going on in your heart.

  148. So let's see what happened.

  149. Let's look at these two occasions

  150. when Jesus asked the servant's question.

  151. And just as a spoiler,

  152. one group get it very wrong.

  153. The other one gets it very right.

  154. So let's look at it.

  155. Let's go back to the start of our reading.

  156. And we read about James and John,

  157. the sons of Zebedee.

  158. They come to Jesus.

  159. Teacher, they said,

  160. we want you to do for us whatever we ask.

  161. Wowzers.

  162. I mean, what a question.

  163. What a thing to say.

  164. Wow.

  165. Jesus, remember,

  166. is the eternal son of man

  167. who is going to be worshipped by all the nations.

  168. And these two little disciples come and say,

  169. we want you to do for us whatever we ask.

  170. Do you not think Jesus would have every right

  171. to turn around and say,

  172. how dare you?

  173. Who do you think you are?

  174. But he doesn't.

  175. He's gracious.

  176. He's kind.

  177. He wants to teach them.

  178. He wants to show them what's in their hearts.

  179. And so he asks them the servant's question.

  180. What do you want me to do for you?

  181. They're very clear.

  182. They've got this worked out.

  183. They've already thought this through.

  184. They reply,

  185. let one of us sit at your right

  186. and the other at your left in your glory.

  187. Here is essentially their answer.

  188. We want to be first.

  189. We want the highest place.

  190. Now, let's give them their G.

  191. They have understood that Jesus

  192. is about to receive a lot of glory.

  193. They have understood that there's something

  194. of a kingdom going on.

  195. They've seen his miracles.

  196. Perhaps they've worked out that he is the Messiah.

  197. He is the king of Israel,

  198. whose God has promised forever and ever.

  199. And they're like,

  200. we want in on that, Jesus.

  201. We want to be in the highest place.

  202. We want to be in the highest place.

  203. But their hearts are desperately,

  204. desperately wrong.

  205. And you can feel the kind of,

  206. the pain in Jesus' answer.

  207. He says,

  208. in verse 38,

  209. you don't know what you're asking.

  210. You don't know what you're asking.

  211. Can you drink the cup I drink

  212. or be baptized with the baptism I'm baptized with?

  213. Now, I love this.

  214. Right, so Jesus comes out with this.

  215. Can you be baptized with the baptism I'm baptized with?

  216. And James and John,

  217. perhaps they take a brief moment,

  218. they look at each other and they go,

  219. yeah, we can do that.

  220. They haven't got the first idea

  221. what Jesus is talking about.

  222. They don't know what he's referring to.

  223. Presumably, they think,

  224. when Jesus talks about the cup he's going to drink,

  225. they think, well, that must be a cup of glory.

  226. Yeah, we could drink that, Jesus.

  227. We'll drink a cup of glory.

  228. Baptism, yeah, we'll be baptized.

  229. We'll be submerged and immersed

  230. in your glory and your power.

  231. Yes, Jesus, we can do that.

  232. No problem.

  233. They have not understood the kingdom of Jesus.

  234. They've not understood who he is

  235. and what he's come to do.

  236. Because the cup Jesus is talking about

  237. is the cup of suffering

  238. that he will drink at the cross.

  239. It's the cup of God's wrath

  240. that he will drink.

  241. It's the cup of agonizing pain.

  242. That he will drink

  243. as he dies to save the world.

  244. And the baptism he talks about

  245. is the baptism of going under the judgment of God.

  246. It's the suffering of this world,

  247. being immersed in death,

  248. going to death itself.

  249. They think it's about glory.

  250. It's all about suffering.

  251. And so Jesus said to them,

  252. you will drink the cup I drink

  253. and be baptized with the baptism

  254. I'm baptized with.

  255. He says, actually,

  256. you are going to suffer.

  257. And obviously,

  258. they're not going to drink

  259. the cup of God's wrath.

  260. That's what Jesus will do.

  261. But they are going to follow him.

  262. Just like he said,

  263. take up my cross.

  264. They are going to die.

  265. They are going to suffer.

  266. But verse 40,

  267. to sit at my right or left

  268. is not for me to grant.

  269. These places belong to those

  270. for whom they've prepared.

  271. He says,

  272. James and John,

  273. your hearts are all wrong.

  274. You think it's about

  275. grabbing for glory.

  276. Actually,

  277. it is about embracing

  278. suffering

  279. and service.

  280. The 10 hear about this.

  281. They become indignant.

  282. They're pretty annoyed

  283. with James and John.

  284. I don't think it's kind of,

  285. oh, James and John,

  286. how could you be so selfish?

  287. I think it is,

  288. James and John,

  289. how dare you try

  290. and get ahead of us?

  291. And so Jesus calls them together.

  292. Stop squabbling, children.

  293. Come here.

  294. Let me teach you.

  295. You know that those

  296. who are regarded

  297. as rulers of the Gentiles

  298. lord it over them

  299. and their high officials

  300. exercise authority over them.

  301. You know, right,

  302. how the world works.

  303. People pushing forward,

  304. grabbing for glory.

  305. You know how it works.

  306. And then Jesus says these words,

  307. not so with you.

  308. It must not be that way.

  309. Instead,

  310. whoever wants to become great

  311. among you

  312. must be your servant

  313. and whoever wants to be first

  314. must be slave of all.

  315. This is remarkable.

  316. This one question

  317. cracks open

  318. what is going on

  319. in the proud human heart.

  320. Because I think

  321. James and John

  322. are very like me

  323. and perhaps

  324. they're very like you.

  325. I want to be first.

  326. I want to be noticed.

  327. I want to be seen.

  328. I want to be appreciated.

  329. I want applause.

  330. There's something

  331. that loves to be first.

  332. It's a bit like,

  333. you know when you go

  334. to a supermarket

  335. and it's busy

  336. and you're queuing.

  337. And you have to make

  338. that awful decision

  339. as you approach

  340. the busy checkouts.

  341. Which one

  342. is going to be

  343. my checkout of choice?

  344. And you're trying to judge, right?

  345. You're trying to assess.

  346. It's not just about

  347. the longest queue

  348. because it might be

  349. they've only got a few items.

  350. You might have a very,

  351. one person

  352. but a very big

  353. trolley load of stuff.

  354. So you're trying to assess

  355. which one's going to go first,

  356. which is going to go first.

  357. You're trying to look

  358. at the checkout system.

  359. How fast are they going to be?

  360. They look efficient.

  361. And you start

  362. and you choose your queue

  363. and you stand in your queue

  364. and then what you do

  365. is you line up

  366. with someone next to you.

  367. So as long as I beat them,

  368. then I'm happy.

  369. I've chosen a good queue.

  370. Anyone else do this

  371. or it's just me?

  372. And you're moving forwards

  373. and suddenly this queue

  374. is going faster than you

  375. and it's awful.

  376. You find yourself

  377. getting very stressed

  378. and then someone spills

  379. all their little coins

  380. all over the thing.

  381. It's like, come on!

  382. And then someone

  383. opens a till over here

  384. and the people behind you

  385. whip round

  386. and get in before you

  387. and it's like so frustrating

  388. and you find your blood pressure rising

  389. and you find your stress levels increasing.

  390. There is a way

  391. in that situation

  392. to make all of your stress go away.

  393. All you need to do

  394. is turn to the person behind you

  395. and say,

  396. would you like to go in front of me?

  397. And the moment you do that,

  398. you don't care anymore

  399. because you've chosen

  400. to serve.

  401. Rather than this obsession

  402. with making sure

  403. that I get what I want

  404. and I'm noticed

  405. and I get,

  406. I don't miss out

  407. and I don't lose out.

  408. Instead, you choose to serve.

  409. If queuing in a supermarket

  410. doesn't work for you,

  411. perhaps driving in a traffic jam,

  412. apply it to wherever you

  413. have your little stresses.

  414. And if that doesn't apply to you,

  415. then

  416. think about all the ways

  417. in our hearts

  418. that we just try to make sure

  419. that we get

  420. what we think

  421. we deserve.

  422. As long as I'm seen

  423. and we will use

  424. whatever we can

  425. in order to make sure

  426. that I get what I want.

  427. it might be in the workplace,

  428. it might be in my family,

  429. that I make sure

  430. that I'm sorted out

  431. and I'm looked after.

  432. Happens in churches.

  433. Where as long as

  434. my preferences are met

  435. and my choices

  436. and my opinions

  437. are accepted,

  438. then I'm happy.

  439. but I feel like

  440. I'm being pushed to the back.

  441. If I feel like

  442. other people are going ahead of me,

  443. then we can become

  444. very stressed.

  445. It happens in terms

  446. of our gifting.

  447. Sometimes, you know,

  448. you have a particular gift.

  449. Perhaps you're all brilliant

  450. and I'm picking,

  451. I don't know this church,

  452. I'm picking things

  453. at random, right?

  454. Perhaps you're very gifted

  455. as a flower arranger

  456. or as a

  457. I used to be in an orchestra.

  458. I used to play clarinet

  459. in an orchestra

  460. and I was first clarinet.

  461. Like, I was the most,

  462. I was the best

  463. in the orchestra.

  464. It was very exciting

  465. and I would sit

  466. and I'd play my clarinet

  467. and feel very smug

  468. and proud

  469. and then one day,

  470. a girl walked

  471. into the orchestra hall

  472. and she was carrying

  473. a box that looked

  474. suspiciously like

  475. a clarinet.

  476. And she was third clarinet

  477. but she was clearly

  478. much better than me.

  479. And it didn't take long

  480. for the conductor

  481. to eventually say,

  482. John T, would you mind

  483. switch it?

  484. Would you mind switching?

  485. Would you mind

  486. if Carola was

  487. first clarinet?

  488. I can still remember

  489. the seething rage

  490. that she'd come in

  491. and taken my place.

  492. I kind of wanted

  493. bad things to happen

  494. like her fingers

  495. to drop off

  496. or something

  497. so that she could

  498. no longer play clarinet.

  499. Isn't it sad

  500. we can be like that

  501. in church?

  502. Rather than rejoice

  503. in someone else,

  504. we feel threatened.

  505. We feel angry

  506. because it threatens

  507. our sense of identity

  508. and we're like,

  509. no, this is my role,

  510. this is what I do.

  511. Rather than saying,

  512. no, we come to serve.

  513. And Jesus,

  514. as he asks this question,

  515. what do you want

  516. me to do for you?

  517. Perhaps the deepest,

  518. honest answer

  519. of our hearts is,

  520. Jesus, I want glory.

  521. I want you to make me great.

  522. I want you to fix

  523. all my problems.

  524. I want you to sort

  525. my life out.

  526. I want you to make sure

  527. that I get what I want.

  528. Do you know,

  529. when Jesus,

  530. if you are someone

  531. who finds yourself

  532. wanting to push

  533. to the front of the queue,

  534. what Jesus comes to you,

  535. he says,

  536. gently,

  537. he says to you,

  538. you need to learn

  539. to go to the back.

  540. Go to the back

  541. of the queue.

  542. Go to the back

  543. of the queue

  544. and learn to serve.

  545. And here's the weird thing,

  546. right?

  547. The weird thing is

  548. that the back of the queue

  549. is where freedom is found.

  550. Everybody thinks

  551. that to be at the front

  552. of the queue is freedom.

  553. I just want to be at the front.

  554. I want to be at the front.

  555. I want to be at the front.

  556. The front of the queue

  557. is not freedom.

  558. The front of the queue

  559. is slavery

  560. because you are stressed

  561. all the time

  562. that one day

  563. Carola is going to

  564. walk into your life

  565. and is going to

  566. take your place.

  567. The front of the queue

  568. is the place

  569. where you feel alone

  570. because you've had to

  571. push everyone

  572. out of your way

  573. to get to the front.

  574. The front of the queue

  575. is a slavery

  576. that you have to keep

  577. working to maintain

  578. your position

  579. and to not lose

  580. who you are.

  581. I want glory.

  582. I want glory.

  583. I want glory.

  584. And you'll never

  585. get to the front.

  586. The great irony

  587. that Jesus knows

  588. and what he shows us

  589. through his gospel

  590. is that freedom

  591. is found at the back

  592. when you go to the back

  593. and you serve others

  594. and you say,

  595. what do you want me

  596. to do for you?

  597. Jesus is the most

  598. free human being

  599. who's ever lived

  600. because he was not

  601. interested in getting

  602. to the front.

  603. He constantly went

  604. to the back to serve.

  605. He was so free.

  606. This is freedom.

  607. But it may be

  608. that some of you

  609. sitting here

  610. are thinking,

  611. huh,

  612. I just feel rubbish.

  613. I gave up

  614. trying to be the front

  615. of the queue

  616. a long time ago.

  617. I feel like I've got nothing.

  618. I feel like I'm useless.

  619. I feel like I'm

  620. I've got nothing to offer.

  621. Well,

  622. here's why Mark

  623. puts this story next.

  624. Because look what happens next.

  625. Just after we've had

  626. this discussion

  627. around greatness

  628. and pushing to the front

  629. and trying to get

  630. to the front,

  631. look what happens next.

  632. They come to Derrick Jericho.

  633. As Jesus and his disciples

  634. together with a large crowd

  635. were leaving the city,

  636. a blind man,

  637. Bartimaeus,

  638. which means son of Timaeus,

  639. was sitting by the roadside

  640. begging.

  641. It would be hard

  642. to imagine someone

  643. more at the back

  644. of the queue

  645. than Bartimaeus.

  646. James and John,

  647. we want to be at the front.

  648. Here is Bartimaeus

  649. who's at the back.

  650. He's begging.

  651. He's sitting by the roadside.

  652. He's got nothing.

  653. He's utterly,

  654. utterly dependent

  655. on others.

  656. He's got nothing to offer.

  657. He's just begging

  658. from others.

  659. Now he heard

  660. that Jesus of Nazareth

  661. was coming by.

  662. Maybe he'd heard

  663. some rumors about Jesus

  664. and something within him

  665. welled up

  666. and he began to think,

  667. what if,

  668. what if this Jesus

  669. might help me?

  670. And so he begins

  671. to cry out.

  672. Can you picture him

  673. like just crying out?

  674. He doesn't know.

  675. He's blind.

  676. He can't see where Jesus is.

  677. He's crying out.

  678. Jesus,

  679. son of David,

  680. have mercy on me.

  681. What did the crowd say?

  682. I'd say,

  683. shut up,

  684. Bartimaeus.

  685. You're the back

  686. of the queue.

  687. There are a lot

  688. of people ahead of you.

  689. There are a lot

  690. of people who have

  691. more demand

  692. on Jesus

  693. than you do.

  694. Bartimaeus,

  695. you need to be quiet.

  696. But he just keeps

  697. shouting,

  698. I love it.

  699. Jesus,

  700. son of David,

  701. have mercy on me.

  702. He's crying

  703. for mercy.

  704. He's not asking

  705. for glory.

  706. He is a blind beggar

  707. who is desperately

  708. in need

  709. of mercy.

  710. And then come

  711. my two favorite words

  712. in the whole

  713. of Mark's gospel.

  714. My two favorite words.

  715. Look at the first two words

  716. of verse 49.

  717. Jesus,

  718. stop.

  719. Remember,

  720. Jesus is on his way

  721. to die on a cross

  722. to save the universe.

  723. The eternal son of God,

  724. the son of man,

  725. who's worthy

  726. of all worship

  727. and all honor

  728. and all glory.

  729. He's going to a cross

  730. to die,

  731. then he'll rise again,

  732. he'll return to glory.

  733. What could possibly

  734. be important enough

  735. to make Jesus

  736. stop on his great

  737. eternal divine mission?

  738. What could possibly

  739. make him stop?

  740. I mean,

  741. it must be something

  742. incredibly important.

  743. It must be something

  744. incredibly significant.

  745. What is it?

  746. It's a blind beggar

  747. called Bartimaeus.

  748. Do you not see?

  749. Jesus stops

  750. for blind

  751. beggars.

  752. That's our Jesus.

  753. That's his heart.

  754. That's how he loves.

  755. He's not interested

  756. in the powerful

  757. and the rich

  758. and the influencers

  759. and the celebrity.

  760. He stops

  761. for blind beggars

  762. who've got nothing

  763. to offer him.

  764. And he says,

  765. call him.

  766. So they call

  767. to the blind man,

  768. cheer up.

  769. On your feet,

  770. he's calling you.

  771. Throwing his cloak aside,

  772. he jumped to his feet

  773. and he came to Jesus.

  774. And then we get

  775. our question.

  776. What do you want me

  777. to do for you?

  778. I mean, it's strange, right?

  779. Because Bartimaeus

  780. is blind.

  781. It's obvious

  782. what Jesus

  783. needs to do for him.

  784. But Jesus treats him

  785. with such dignity

  786. and respect.

  787. He doesn't go,

  788. oh, you're blind,

  789. fine, I'll heal you

  790. and off he goes.

  791. Instead, he treats him

  792. with such respect.

  793. He says,

  794. what do you want me

  795. to do for you?

  796. What is the cry

  797. of your heart?

  798. And this blind man

  799. simply says,

  800. Rabbi,

  801. I want to see.

  802. It's a cry

  803. of desperate need.

  804. It's a cry

  805. for mercy.

  806. And Jesus says,

  807. go,

  808. your faith

  809. has healed you.

  810. And immediately

  811. the man follows

  812. Jesus along the road.

  813. You see,

  814. if the people

  815. who want to be

  816. at the front of the queue,

  817. Jesus says,

  818. you need to learn

  819. to go to the back.

  820. What does people say,

  821. what does Jesus say

  822. to the people

  823. at the back of the queue?

  824. He says to them,

  825. come to the front.

  826. Come to the front

  827. and let me show you mercy.

  828. Come to the front

  829. and let me heal you.

  830. Come to the front

  831. and let me restore you.

  832. And so if you're sitting here

  833. in church this morning

  834. and you can identify

  835. with blind Bartimaeus,

  836. you feel like you're someone

  837. who has nothing to offer.

  838. You feel like you've made

  839. a complete disaster

  840. of your life.

  841. You're not impressive.

  842. No one notices you.

  843. No one seems

  844. to be bothered about you.

  845. No one really cares.

  846. You have things

  847. in your life

  848. that you feel ashamed of

  849. in the past.

  850. Things that you know

  851. you've done.

  852. Things that you think

  853. disqualify you.

  854. Things that keep you away.

  855. Is that you?

  856. Because if you find yourself

  857. sitting at the back

  858. of the queue,

  859. I want you to know

  860. this morning

  861. that Jesus stops

  862. for people like you.

  863. And he comes to you

  864. in your desperate need

  865. and in your weakness

  866. and in your frailty

  867. and in your sin.

  868. And he says,

  869. what do you want me

  870. to do for you?

  871. And if you can cry to him,

  872. Lord,

  873. please show me mercy.

  874. I want to see you.

  875. With the biggest smile

  876. and the widest arms,

  877. Jesus will say,

  878. yes.

  879. Yes.

  880. Come.

  881. Come.

  882. Come to the front

  883. and receive mercy

  884. from Jesus.

  885. Come.

  886. Come.

  887. Come.

  888. Come.

  889. That

  890. is the beautiful

  891. gospel of Jesus.

  892. Jesus.

  893. And so here is Jesus.

  894. And this morning,

  895. he says,

  896. what do you want me

  897. to do for you?

  898. If the honest cry

  899. of your heart

  900. is,

  901. Jesus,

  902. I want to be first,

  903. he says,

  904. go to the back

  905. of the queue.

  906. But if this morning,

  907. the honest cry

  908. of your heart

  909. is,

  910. Jesus,

  911. I've got nothing,

  912. he says,

  913. come to me.

  914. Come to the front.

  915. Do you know what I've

  916. experienced as I've

  917. lived the Christian

  918. life?

  919. What I find

  920. is there are times

  921. when I'm proud

  922. and he says,

  923. go to the back

  924. and he humbles me

  925. and I'm humbled

  926. and then I feel

  927. rubbish and I feel

  928. broken.

  929. He said,

  930. and I cry to him

  931. for mercy.

  932. He says,

  933. yeah,

  934. come to the front.

  935. And then I begin

  936. to get proud.

  937. He says,

  938. go to the back

  939. again.

  940. And the Christian

  941. life is a sort

  942. of experience

  943. of learning to live

  944. in this

  945. reality.

  946. Fighting pride

  947. by going to the

  948. back and serving

  949. and then receiving

  950. mercy as you come

  951. to Jesus at the

  952. front and then

  953. it's that.

  954. So here is Jesus.

  955. I think he's

  956. spectacular.

  957. I think he's

  958. magnificent.

  959. I think he's

  960. worthy of worship

  961. this morning.

  962. Because he says,

  963. what do you want

  964. me to do for you?

  965. Let's just take a

  966. moment as we

  967. finish.

  968. Just take a

  969. moment of quiet.

  970. Let's just think.

  971. As Jesus asks that

  972. question,

  973. what do you want

  974. me to do for you?

  975. Do you feel him

  976. saying,

  977. you need to be

  978. humbled,

  979. you need to go to

  980. the back and serve

  981. others rather than

  982. being about yourself?

  983. Or perhaps you hear

  984. him saying,

  985. let me show you

  986. mercy,

  987. let me restore you,

  988. let me forgive you,

  989. let me heal you this

  990. morning.

  991. Take a moment just

  992. to pray.

  993. Lord Jesus,

  994. we worship you.

  995. We worship you as

  996. the son of man in

  997. magnificent glory who

  998. came to serve.

  999. We went not just to

1000. the back of the queue,

  1001. but to the very

  1002. lowest of places at

  1003. the cross.

1004. And we ask today that

  1005. we would hear your

  1006. voice.

1007. We ask today that you

  1008. would help us to

  1009. learn to serve.

  1010. That we would not

  1011. seek our own honor

  1012. and glory or comfort,

1013. but that we learn to

  1014. serve one another.

  1015. I really pray that

  1016. this church family

  1017. would be a church

  1018. full of people who

  1019. want to serve each

  1020. other.

  1021. Lord,

  1022. I pray that this

  1023. merger with Redeemer

  1024. Queens Park,

  1025. Lord,

  1026. that's going to take a

  1027. lot of serving one

  1028. another.

1029. And we pray for that

  1030. heart.

  1031. We pray for that

  1032. attitude of Jesus.

  1033. And Lord,

1034. for those of us who

  1035. just feel broken,

1036. for those of us who

  1037. just feel worthless

  1038. and like we have

  1039. nothing to offer,

  1040. pray this morning we

  1041. would hear the great

  1042. beautiful invitation of

  1043. Jesus to come

  1044. and receive mercy.

  1045. Lord,

  1046. we pray to you.

  1047. Amen.
