  1. 2 Samuel chapter 22.

    2 Samuel 22 chapter mention

  2. I'm going to read the whole chapter for us this morning.

  3. David sang to the Lord the words of this song

  4. when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies

  5. and from the hand of Saul.

  6. He said,

  7. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer.

  8. My God is my rock in whom I take refuge.

  9. My shield and the horn of my salvation.

  10. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior.

  11. From violent people you save me.

  12. I call to the Lord who is worthy of praise

  13. and have been saved from my enemies.

  14. The waves of death swirled about me.

  15. The torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.

  16. The cords of the grave coiled around me.

  17. The snares of death confronted me.

  18. In my distress, I call to the Lord.

  19. I called out to my God.

  20. From his temple he heard my voice.

  21. My cry came to his ears.

  22. The earth trembled and quaked.

  23. The foundations of the heavens shook.

  24. They trembled because he was angry.

  25. Smoke rose from his nostrils.

  26. Consuming fire came from his mouth.

  27. Burning coals blazed out of it.

  28. He parted the heavens and came down.

  29. Dark clouds were under his feet.

  30. He mounted the cherubim and flew.

  31. He soared on the wings of the wind.

  32. He made darkness his canopy around him.

  33. The dark rain clouds of the sky.

  34. Out of the brightness of his presence, bolts of lightning blazed forth.

  35. The Lord thundered from heaven.

  36. The voice of the Most High resounded.

  37. He shot his arrows and scattered the enemy.

  38. With great bolts of lightning he routed them.

  39. The valleys of the sea were exposed.

  40. And the foundations of the earth laid bare.

  41. At the rebuke of the Lord.

  42. At the blast of breath from his nostrils.

  43. He reached down from on high and took hold of me.

  44. He drew me out of deep waters.

  45. He rescued me from my powerful enemy.

  46. From my foes who were too strong for me.

  47. They confronted me in the day of my disaster.

  48. But the Lord was my support.

  49. He brought me out into a spacious place.

  50. He rescued me because he delighted in me.

  51. The Lord has dealt with me according to my righteousness.

  52. According to the cleanness of my hands he has rewarded me.

  53. For I have kept the ways of the Lord.

  54. I am not guilty of turning from my God.

  55. All his laws are before me.

  56. I have not turned away from his decrees.

  57. I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin.

  58. The Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness.

  59. According to the cleanness.

  60. To my cleanness in his sight.

  61. To the faithful you show yourself faithful.

  62. To the blameless you show yourself blameless.

  63. To the pure you show yourself pure.

  64. But to the devious you show yourself shrewd.

  65. You save the humble but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low.

  66. You Lord are my lamp.

  67. The Lord turns my darkness into light.

  68. With your help I can advance against a troop.

  69. With my God I can scale a wall.

  70. As for God his way is perfect.

  71. The Lord's word is flawless.

  72. He shields all who take refuge in him.

  73. For who is a God besides the Lord?

  74. And who is the rock except our God?

  75. It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.

  76. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer.

  77. He causes me to stand on the heights.

  78. He trains my hands for battle.

  79. My arms can bend a bow of bronze.

  80. You make your saving help my shield.

  81. Your help has made me great.

  82. You provided a broad path for my feet.

  83. So that my ankles do not give way.

  84. I pursued my enemies and crushed them.

  85. I did not turn back till they were destroyed.

  86. I crushed them completely and they could not rise.

  87. They fell beneath my feet.

  88. You armed me with strength for battle.

  89. You humbled my adversaries before me.

  90. You made my enemies turn their backs in flight.

  91. And I destroyed my foes.

  92. They cried for help but there was no one to save them.

  93. To the Lord but he did not answer.

  94. I beat them as fine as the dust of the earth.

  95. I pounded and trampled them like mud in the streets.

  96. You have delivered me from the attacks of the peoples.

  97. You have preserved me as the head of nations.

  98. People I did not know now serve me.

  99. Foreigners cower before me.

  100. As soon as they hear of me they obey me.

  101. They lose all heart.

  102. They come trembling from their strongholds.

  103. The Lord lives.

  104. Praise be to my rock.

  105. Exalted be my God.

  106. The rock my saviour.

  107. He is the God who avenges me.

  108. Who puts the nations under me.

  109. Who sets me free from my enemies.

  110. You exalted me from my foes.

  111. From a violent man you rescued me.

  112. Therefore I will praise you Lord among the nations.

  113. I will sing the praises of your name.

  114. He gives his king great victories.

  115. He shows unfailing kindness to his anointed.

  116. To David and his descendants forever.

  117. Well this is God's word.

  118. Let's pray as we come and look at it together.

  119. Let's pray.

  120. Heavenly Father our longing desire is that we might hear you speak from your words to us this morning.

  121. We pray that your Holy Spirit who inspired these words might now be at work in me as I speak.

  122. All of us as we listen.

  123. That we may encounter you and hear you speak.

  124. That you might change and transform us.

  125. That you might comfort us and strengthen us.

  126. That you might rebuke, encourage, equip us to live lives to your praise and glory.

  127. In Jesus name.

  128. Amen.

  129. Amen.

  130. Amen.

  131. Well if you've been with us for the last few months you'll know that we are coming towards the end of our series in 2 Samuel.

  132. And we noticed last time which was a couple of weeks ago now.

  133. That we're in essentially what is the conclusion of the book.

  134. So the material towards the end of 2 Samuel is not organized necessarily chronologically.

  135. But thematically as the writer draws everything to a conclusion.

  136. And at the heart of his conclusion is a song of David and David's final words.

  137. So if you've looked at much of the Bible before, it doesn't matter if you haven't.

  138. But if you have, you might know that David is a famous songwriter.

  139. He is probably the Bible's most famous songwriter.

  140. He wrote a lot of the Psalms.

  141. You might know that he played the harp for Saul.

  142. You might remember that he danced in front of the ark.

  143. He is a musical kind of guy.

  144. And you know, don't you, that the best way to enjoy a song is what?

  145. Sing it, right?

  146. Yeah, so that's how you enjoy songs.

  147. You sing along.

  148. You sing along to a song.

  149. And the best way to ruin a song is to explain it.

  150. Yeah?

  151. And so it's like a joke.

  152. The best way to ruin a joke is to explain it.

  153. And so I'm conscious this morning that really I want us to be able to echo David's words and sing along.

  154. So whilst trying not to ruin the vibe this morning, I do want us to look at the content of what David sings here so that we can join in with him as he sings.

  155. Or maybe even dance along with him, if that's appropriate later, maybe.

  156. Anyway, I want you to see that basically there are three parts to his song.

  157. The song has a beginning, a middle, and an end, right?

  158. Like all good songs and essays, a beginning, a middle, and an end.

  159. And the beginning is all about David's personal victories.

  160. And the end is all about the victories of his army over the nations.

  161. And the middle is all about him and why God saved him.

  162. And that's where I want us to start, in the middle, in verses 21 to 37.

  163. And I want us to look at it under this title, What is Blamelessness?

  164. What is Blamelessness?

  165. Now, like I said, to this point, David has been singing about the great victories that God has won for him.

  166. So if you look down at the passage, you'll see verse 20 that he has been brought into a spacious place.

  167. He has been rescued because the Lord delighted in him.

  168. And these middle verses, David explains why God has continued to rescue him over and over again, why he delights in him.

  169. And he says in verse 21 that God has dealt with him according to his righteousness.

  170. That the great victories are a reward, he says, for the cleanness of his hands.

  171. If you look down at verse 22, you'll notice that he says he has kept the ways of the Lord.

  172. That he has not been guilty of turning from God.

  173. In verse 23, he says his laws were before him.

  174. So much so that in verse 24, he says, sort of summarizing,

  175. I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin.

  176. Now, I don't want to assume that you've been paying attention in our series in the book of 2 Samuel.

  177. But if you have been, you should be wondering, oh my goodness, David, have you slightly lost touch with reality here?

  178. Do you actually know what you have been doing for the last 21 chapters?

  179. Do you know what's been going on?

  180. Perhaps he's just gone a little bit senile towards the end of his life.

  181. Because you know, if you know the story, don't you?

  182. You know that David murdered a guy.

  183. A guy called Uriah the Hittite.

  184. And he murdered Uriah the Hittite because he got Uriah the Hittite's wife pregnant, Bathsheba.

  185. Now, those kind of things are a big deal.

  186. He then basically failed over and over to discipline his wayward children who ended up causing havoc.

  187. Siblings ended up raping one another, murdering one another.

  188. They even staged a coup against his rule.

  189. So when you come to this song, you know, you come to this song that Dave's written at the end of his life,

  190. you perhaps expect him to be singing about disappointments.

  191. Oh Lord, you know, my life has not been quite what I hoped it would have been.

  192. My family's not quite worked out as I would have hoped that they would have worked out.

  193. I've made lots of mistakes.

  194. But in fact, as you look at the song, you find that actually instead he's singing of his blamelessness.

  195. His blamelessness.

  196. Now, you might be thinking, oh, I know this, Steve, right?

  197. I know what you're going to say.

  198. I've encountered this before.

  199. This, Steve, this is that doctrine that you were talking about a few weeks ago from David.

  200. You were talking about justification by faith, weren't you?

  201. I know this.

  202. That's what David's talking about, isn't it?

  203. This truth that the Bible teaches through and through, that basically through faith in Jesus Christ,

  204. sinners like us, like David, people who have sinned against God and gone their own way can be justified,

  205. declared not guilty because sinless Jesus stands in our place at the cross.

  206. The Bible says that for the Christian, their sin has been, it uses kind of, the term is imputed.

  207. It's like passed on to, counted as.

  208. So our sin is passed on, imputed to Jesus.

  209. And Jesus' righteousness, his goodness, his rightness has been imputed, passed on to us.

  210. So that the Christian can say, in the eyes of God, I'm covered in Jesus' rightness.

  211. Whiteness.

  212. So I'm perfect.

  213. I've never, it looks like I've never done anything wrong.

  214. Now that's true, right?

  215. Justification by faith is probably the most important doctrine in the scriptures.

  216. But I'm not sure that's what David means here.

  217. And I don't think that's what he means because that's not what he says.

  218. Instead, what seems to be going on is that David actually looks back at his life,

  219. at his time as king, and sees that in an important sense, he has been blameless.

  220. And that's because blameless in the Bible doesn't always mean sinlessly perfect.

  221. Blameless in the Bible often means wholehearted, as in trusting completely in the Lord.

  222. Solomon, who comes after David, Solomon is David's son who comes after him.

  223. And we're told about him in 1 Kings 11, verse 6, that Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

    1 Kings 11:6

  224. He did not follow the Lord completely as David, his father, had done.

  225. The sense here is that Solomon was not quite like David because David wholly followed, completely followed the Lord.

  226. Blamelessness of David was not mirrored by Solomon.

  227. To give you more examples, the Old Testament character Job, if you know him, was called blameless by God,

  228. as God talks to Satan about him in the opening chapters of the book.

  229. And it doesn't mean, look at what Job has become because I justified him, but rather, no, look at Job.

  230. He is a man who wholeheartedly follows me.

  231. He's devoted to me.

  232. Job later on calls himself blameless.

  233. Again, not meaning sinless because he's repenting of his sin in the same narrative.

  234. Daniel calls himself blameless.

  235. Says it's why the Lord rescued him from the lions, even though again and again we see him praying and praying prayers of repentance.

  236. The Psalms sing of blamelessness like this.

  237. The book of Proverbs instructs us to be blameless like this.

  238. Not because the book of Proverbs expects us to be sinlessly perfect,

  239. but because it wants us to and expects us to wholeheartedly trust in the Lord.

  240. It's the same in the New Testament when in Philippians 2 verses 14 to 15,

    Philippians 2:14–15

  241. Paul tells the people to stop grumbling so that they may become what?

  242. Blameless and innocent children of God.

  243. Not because stopping grumbling is the same as putting your faith in Jesus and being declared righteous by him,

  244. but because grumbling is a common sin of God's people which betrays a lack of wholehearted trust in God,

  245. who is in charge of all the things you grumble about.

  246. Don't be like that.

  247. Be blameless.

  248. It's the same idea in 1 Timothy chapter 3,

    1 Timothy 3 chapter mention

  249. when the leaders of the church are told to be above reproach or blameless.

  250. Not simply meaning that the leaders in the church are to be Christians,

  251. that's kind of an obvious statement, isn't it?

  252. But rather they are to be wholehearted in their following of Jesus.

  253. Dale Ralph Davis, who's written a commentary on these verses, says this,

  254. when David speaks of his righteousness and purity,

  255. he does not point to sinless perfection, but life direction.

  256. He's not sporting a pharisaical pride over errorless obedience,

  257. but expressing a faithful loyalty via consistent obedience.

  258. All of this is important for it is such faithful, wholehearted, though afflicted servants that the Lord delights to rescue,

  259. and who can then revel in the power and safety that the Lord has provided.

  260. David here, he's looking back across his life and he says,

  261. Do you know, I've always, I've always wanted to walk with the Lord.

  262. I've always been walking towards him.

  263. I've always been following the Lord.

  264. I might not have done it perfectly, but I've done it wholeheartedly.

  265. It's what I've always wanted.

  266. Let me try and illustrate what's going on, just to give you a bit of time to think and ponder on this some more.

  267. I want you to imagine that you're walking to Buckingham Palace.

  268. You probably wouldn't walk.

  269. You'd probably catch the bus, I know.

  270. But anyway, imagine if you were walking.

  271. It's not actually that far to walk.

  272. But if you were walking to Buckingham Palace, you've got an appointment with a king, perhaps.

  273. You're determined.

  274. You've got to get to the palace.

  275. You've got to meet with a king.

  276. He wants to see you.

  277. But as you start off down Carlton Vale, you get down there and you get a little bit distracted by Paddington Rec.

  278. So you go and, you know, you throw a ball in Paddington Rec for a bit.

  279. And then you end up walking a little bit through Maida Vale, past Little Venice and Paddington Station.

  280. It's probably not the quickest way.

  281. And then you notice that there's, you know, McDonald's in Paddington.

  282. And so you get diverted there for a moment.

  283. And then you carry on down the Edgway Road to Marble Arch.

  284. And then at High Park Corny, take a left instead of a right.

  285. You end up at Harrods instead of Buckingham Palace.

  286. But then you cut around the back and you end up eventually at Buckingham Palace.

  287. And as you look back from the doors of Buckingham Palace, what you say is, I've always wanted to arrive here.

  288. I have been determinedly walking here all morning.

  289. I've made some mistakes along the way.

  290. But as I look back, my determination was always to walk towards the palace.

  291. Not towards Heathrow Airport, but always towards Buckingham Palace.

  292. Now, in a sense, and it doesn't quite work all the way through, but that's what's going on here.

  293. David's godliness is not so much that he's achieved a level and says, right, I've got the badge of honour now.

  294. No, what it is, is that he has been walking in this direction in his life.

  295. I have been walking towards the Lord, says David.

  296. Not in my own strength.

  297. Not blazing a trail of my own, but humbly trusting in God.

  298. Verse 28.

  299. And so the whole song is about how God has been his strength to get him to glory.

  300. God has made David wholehearted.

  301. He has given him a wholehearted heart that unswervingly wants to follow the Lord.

  302. Even if his way has been marked by failure and weakness.

  303. And so David sings.

  304. Always wanted to be with the Lord.

  305. I've always wanted to follow him.

  306. And God has enabled me.

  307. And God has won great victories.

  308. Now, let me suggest, just before we go any further in the song, it's worth us just thinking about that some more.

  309. That at the conclusion of everything that's happened, David's singing out the book.

  310. This is his central piece of advice to you, to me.

  311. You know, this is the theme of his song, if you like, as he sings at the end of the book.

  312. He says, listen, this is what I want you to know about life.

  313. The thing that you will sing about at the end of your life, if you've done it, is to walk wholeheartedly with the Lord.

  314. That's what life is for.

  315. That's what it's about.

  316. That's it.

  317. Lean into what God is doing in you as a Christian by his spirit.

  318. He's given you a new heart that loves him and longs to walk with him.

  319. Now, go that way.

  320. Wholeheartedly go that way.

  321. So let me ask you this morning, let me ask myself, does this describe us?

  322. Is this how we're living?

  323. You know, does the use of my time, does the way that I spend my money, do the dreams of my heart, the aspirations of my ambitions,

  324. are they marked by this wholehearted desire to follow the Lord?

  325. Or is the truth is that I've slightly lost my way?

  326. I'm wandering aimlessly.

  327. I think, though, it's a mistake, isn't it, if we see this just as a challenge?

  328. Because I think there's a consolation in this, too, isn't there?

  329. You see, there are some of us in this room who have been Christians for a really, really long time.

  330. Some of you, and I'm not going to look in any particular direction, because I know you'll be offended at me saying this,

  331. but some of you, I'm just going to look to a blank page of the balcony,

  332. some of you are in the final laps, aren't you, of the Christian life?

  333. And maybe for you, as you look back, what sticks most clearly in your mind are the Uriah and Bathsheba moments of your life.

  334. Not your wholeheartedness.

  335. Perhaps you see the disappointments where you've missed the point,

  336. where you've been waylaid along the way,

  337. where you took the wrong turn at High Park Corner.

  338. Maybe, as you look back, you see wasted years in pointless pursuits.

  339. Well, let me say this morning, if you're a Christian,

  340. if you believe and trust in the Lord Jesus,

  341. and you long to live for him,

  342. and you're in the final laps of that race,

  343. you can sing David's song.

  344. Because the fact that you're here,

  345. and you want to live for him,

  346. and you want to live for his glory,

  347. is a sign of this wholehearted work that God has done in you.

  348. You can sing that your godliness was not a destination along the way,

  349. it's not a merit sticker that you received when you obtained a certain standard.

  350. No, godliness is this commitment to keep going,

  351. and keep walking,

  352. to keep trusting,

  353. to keep looking to Christ,

  354. to keep looking to please him,

  355. until you see him face to face.

  356. And if that's you this morning,

  357. and maybe especially if you're in these final laps,

  358. let me say to you that we will,

  359. if we're still here,

  360. which we might not be,

  361. but if we're still here and the Lord has spared us,

  362. with tear-filled rejoicing,

  363. we will stand around your grave and sing

  364. that they finished the race.

  365. They completed the task that God had given them.

  366. They wholeheartedly walked with him,

  367. and now they're with him.

  368. And there's no greater joy.

  369. There's no greater joy.

  370. So that's the centre of the song,

  371. this wholehearted,

  372. this blamelessness of David,

  373. as he desires to follow the Lord.

  374. But let me just try and tease out what goes on at the beginning and the end,

  375. and see some more of its implications for us.

  376. So let's start with the first bit,

  377. the personal rescue for the blameless.

  378. Look down at these opening sections,

  379. and you can't help but notice how many times David says,

  380. my,

  381. I'm not going to count them,

  382. I think it's nine,

  383. but I could be wrong.

  384. In verses two to three,

  385. he talks about God's personal saving and shielding.

  386. God is not distant or far off to David,

  387. but is nearby and present.

  388. Belonging to David is a rock,

  389. a fortress,

  390. a deliverer,

  391. a shield,

  392. a stronghold,

  393. a refuge,

  394. and a saviour.

  395. Now,

  396. the strength of David's praise here,

  397. in a sense,

  398. is linked to the depth of his trouble.

  399. As he's been in trouble,

  400. in verses five to seven,

  401. as he's been in deep water,

  402. that he knows God's rescue.

  403. And it's probably a reference to the trouble Saul caused him

  404. when he came so close to death.

  405. And we've read enough of 2 Samuel to know

  406. that there have been a number of occasions in David's life

  407. when it has been really precarious for him.

  408. And yet,

  409. he says,

  410. he sings,

  411. God has always saved me.

  412. He's always turned up and rescued me.

  413. So in verse seven,

  414. David cries out.

  415. In verse eight,

  416. God is angry.

  417. And in verse 10,

  418. comes down in dark clouds,

  419. to save him.

  420. You might think,

  421. what is David referring to here?

  422. What is the language here?

  423. This thunder and lightning.

  424. It's clearly a kind of apocalyptic type language,

  425. isn't it?

  426. It's poetry that he is writing.

  427. He's using pictures to convey God's power

  428. as he's come to rescue him.

  429. Actually though,

  430. as he uses those pictures

  431. and you relate it to the times in his life,

  432. it's actually been quite ordinary.

  433. You know,

  434. you think about the time

  435. when Saul came into the cave

  436. where David is hiding.

  437. Saul has been hunting David

  438. to try and kill him.

  439. And Saul accidentally walks into the cave

  440. where David is at the,

  441. hidden at the back of the cave.

  442. Saul comes in to use the toilet.

  443. Right?

  444. And David is saved

  445. by Saul

  446. wandering into the wrong cave.

  447. And David says,

  448. as he sings,

  449. with those kind of things in mind,

  450. he goes,

  451. God came down to save me

  452. in thunder and lightning.

  453. And these apocalyptic pictures

  454. are not exaggerations,

  455. are they?

  456. Rather what David is using

  457. is he's using covenant images.

  458. He's recalling Exodus 19

  459. and the people of Israel

  460. in front of Mount Sinai

  461. where there's thunder and lightning

  462. and crashing and light.

  463. And God is speaking to them,

  464. saying that you are my people.

  465. You belong to me.

  466. I'm rescuing you.

  467. You belong to me to live for me.

  468. And David says,

  469. you know,

  470. those covenant promises,

  471. those belong to me.

  472. I've experienced them.

  473. I've seen them working out.

  474. God has saved me.

  475. So perhaps this morning

  476. you find yourself

  477. in something that might feel

  478. a little bit like

  479. verses five to seven.

  480. You know what it feels like

  481. to be encompassed by death,

  482. to be drowning

  483. in the ways of destruction,

  484. of the sin of our own hearts,

  485. perhaps.

  486. Well, if that's you,

  487. let me encourage you

  488. to cry to God right there.

  489. He will meet you there.

  490. He will come wholeheartedly

  491. to save you.

  492. He will rescue.

  493. God has got a covenant promise,

  494. a promise that David

  495. sees echoed in Exodus 19.

  496. He sees echoed

  497. in what God has promised to him.

  498. It's fulfilled in Jesus Christ,

  499. the one who literally

  500. ripped open the heavens

  501. and burst into our world,

  502. who bolted forth

  503. from the brightness

  504. of the presence of God

  505. and still promises

  506. to save and rescue

  507. for eternity with him.

  508. I wonder, though,

  509. if I can ask you,

  510. how do you expect

  511. to encounter

  512. those promises today?

  513. Well, let me suggest to you

  514. that just like David

  515. encountered

  516. these great things

  517. of God

  518. in the ordinariness

  519. of a cave with Saul,

  520. so you and I

  521. encounter

  522. the extraordinariness

  523. of God's covenant promises

  524. in the ordinary means

  525. of things like

  526. a church gathering,

  527. a time around

  528. the Lord's table,

  529. singing the words

  530. of a song,

  531. the prayer of a Christian

  532. brother or sister.

  533. In those moments,

  534. the Lord comes

  535. thundering down

  536. to help us,

  537. to keep us walking

  538. blamelessly home.

  539. Perhaps this morning

  540. you're not a Christian

  541. or maybe you're just

  542. not quite sure

  543. exactly where you stand

  544. with the Lord.

  545. Perhaps you say,

  546. well, if all of this

  547. is true,

  548. I would expect to see it

  549. written in the sky

  550. as I walk out of here

  551. or I'd expect

  552. to have an audible voice

  553. come to me

  554. as I lie on my bed

  555. at night,

  556. a thunderbolt

  557. from the sky

  558. stopping me

  559. in my tracks.

  560. Well, obviously,

  561. God could do that

  562. and God has done

  563. those things on occasion

  564. but David's song here

  565. is to remind you

  566. that actually

  567. more often than not,

  568. God's salvation

  569. comes and is seen

  570. in ordinary ways.

  571. Let me suggest

  572. to you this morning

  573. that actually

  574. the extraordinary work

  575. of God

  576. you see

  577. in the ordinary cry

  578. of a baby

  579. in a manger

  580. in Bethlehem.

  581. You see

  582. in the bloodstained

  583. body of a man

  584. on a cross

  585. and now you see it

  586. in a small church

  587. in northwest London

  588. preaching a message,

  589. breaking bread together

  590. and celebrating

  591. his life and death.

  592. Here God is at work.

  593. He's working

  594. to save

  595. and to rescue,

  596. to keep

  597. and to lead his people.

  598. Here in this place

  599. God is walking

  600. with his people

  601. through the snares

  602. of death,

  603. the days of disaster

  604. to bring them

  605. safely home.

  606. There's a story

  607. told of a man

  608. who's praying

  609. that the Lord

  610. would get him

  611. across a river.

  612. He's earnest

  613. in his prayers,

  614. he's there on his knees,

  615. he's asking,

  616. you know,

  617. Lord get me

  618. to the other side

  619. of this river,

  620. get me to the other

  621. side of this river.

  622. Eventually a small boat

  623. comes along

  624. and says,

  625. listen I'll give you

  626. a ride to the other

  627. side of the river.

  628. He says,

  629. no, no, no,

  630. don't worry,

  631. I'm praying,

  632. God's going to do it

  633. for me,

  634. God will do it for me.

  635. Along comes a kid

  636. on a paddle board,

  637. I'll take you

  638. across the river,

  639. he says.

  640. No, no,

  641. don't worry,

  642. I'm praying,

  643. God's going to do it

  644. for me,

  645. God will do it.

  646. Guy comes in a canoe,

  647. I'll take you across.

  648. No, don't worry,

  649. God's going to do it

  650. for me,

  651. he says.

  652. I'm waiting for the Lord

  653. to answer,

  654. but the answer never comes

  655. and dejected and sad

  656. he walks home

  657. concluding God's not there

  658. when he meets the Lord

  659. and he's asked

  660. why did he give up his faith?

  661. He says,

  662. you never answered my prayer

  663. to get me across the river.

  664. God says,

  665. I answered it three times

  666. and he didn't take any of them.

  667. And that's the thing,

  668. isn't it?

  669. Actually,

  670. God is at work

  671. in ordinary ways,

  672. doing extraordinary things

  673. in our lives.

  674. And David encourages us

  675. to see that.

  676. You know,

  677. perhaps it is

  678. if you're not a Christian

  679. this morning,

  680. that preacher

  681. that you walk past

  682. on the street

  683. actually is giving out

  684. eternal treasure.

  685. You just never stop to listen.

  686. Let's finish

  687. as we come to the end

  688. of the song,

  689. final victory

  690. for a blameless king.

  691. Final victory

  692. for a blameless king.

  693. There's a lot more

  694. in these verses

  695. than we're going

  696. to have time to tease out.

  697. But I want you just

  698. to notice with me

  699. as we close

  700. that the emphasis

  701. at the end of the song

  702. is not so much

  703. on David's personal salvation,

  704. but on his role

  705. as God's king

  706. in conquering the nations.

  707. Look at verse 35.

  708. David has hands

  709. that are trained for war.

  710. He's pursued his enemies

  711. and destroyed them

  712. in verse 38.

  713. In verse 40,

  714. he's been equipped

  715. with strength for battle

  716. so that he delivers

  717. God's people

  718. as the head of the nations

  719. in verse 44.

  720. In verse 45,

  721. foreigners come

  722. cowering to him

  723. whose alternative strongholds

  724. have let them down

  725. in verse 46.

  726. Verse 51

  727. sort of wraps

  728. the whole theme together

  729. where he says

  730. he gives his king

  731. great victories.

  732. He shows

  733. unfailing kindness

  734. to his anointed,

  735. to David

  736. and his descendants forever.

  737. Now,

  738. here we've moved,

  739. haven't we,

  740. from the personal salvation

  741. that David was singing about

  742. in the first third

  743. of the song.

  744. Now we find

  745. that he's the leader

  746. of the army

  747. of God's people.

  748. He is the king

  749. of God's kingdom.

  750. And the point is

  751. that David's blamelessness

  752. has not only been

  753. good news for him

  754. as he's received

  755. personal salvation

  756. from the Lord,

  757. it's been good news

  758. for everybody

  759. in the kingdom.

  760. His point is

  761. that really,

  762. if you like,

  763. his blamelessness

  764. has been a funnel

  765. of blessing

  766. to the kingdom

  767. of God's people.

  768. It's because

  769. I've walked with the Lord

  770. that God has saved

  771. our armies

  772. and has rescued us

  773. as a people.

  774. Now,

  775. of course,

  776. at this point

  777. we find,

  778. don't we,

  779. that we're no longer

  780. David,

  781. are we,

  782. in the story?

  783. Like we've been finding

  784. over and over

  785. in 2 Samuel,

  786. David is the king

  787. of God's people

  788. is pointing forward

  789. to the Lord Jesus.

  790. Jesus is God's

  791. final king,

  792. the king of God's people

  793. who are no longer

  794. a nation

  795. but a church

  796. of many nations.

  797. And the king

  798. is not just a man

  799. but it's the God-man,

  800. Christ Jesus.

  801. And here we see

  802. David as a forerunner

  803. of the Lord Jesus

  804. as Jesus picks up

  805. these metaphors

  806. of kingdom

  807. and king

  808. and nation

  809. of battle

  810. and fulfills them

  811. in his ministry.

  812. Leading his church

  813. not into a battle

  814. with flesh and blood

  815. for nations or states

  816. but in a battle

  817. with the spiritual forces

  818. of the heavenly places

  819. for the souls

  820. of men and women.

  821. A battle in which

  822. Jesus is just

  823. as comprehensively

  824. victorious as David is.

  825. Strengthened by the spirit,

  826. victorious on the cross,

  827. risen from the grave,

  828. ascended into heaven,

  829. seated at the right hand

  830. of the father

  831. watching all his enemies

  832. being put beneath his feet

  833. the last of which

  834. is death itself.

  835. It's obvious here,

  836. isn't it?

  837. Jesus is the one

  838. in verse 48

  839. whom the father

  840. has put over the nations.

  841. He's put everything

  842. under his feet.

  843. Jesus is the one

  844. who in verse 45

  845. who the nations

  846. come and bow to

  847. as he gathers people

  848. from across the globe

  849. to follow him

  850. and obey him.

  851. Christ is the returning king,

  852. the one who will have

  853. the final victory,

  854. who will crush completely

  855. in verse 39,

  856. who will beat the devil

  857. to dust

  858. and consign him

  859. to hell

  860. in verse 43.

  861. And just like

  862. David's victories

  863. have been funneled

  864. to his people

  865. through his blamelessness,

  866. so Jesus' victories

  867. are funneled to us

  868. through his blamelessness.

  869. Jesus,

  870. who faultlessly

  871. and wholeheartedly

  872. trusts in his father

  873. and obeys his plan.

  874. Jesus,

  875. who never takes

  876. a false turn,

  877. never trips up,

  878. never stops,

  879. single-mindedly,

  880. wholeheartedly,

  881. devoted to his father,

  882. channeling the blessings

  883. of victory

  884. to his people.

  885. You know,

  886. think about it like this,

  887. that the joy

  888. of being an Israelite

  889. in David's kingdom

  890. is because you knew

  891. David was following

  892. the Lord.

  893. God was on his side.

  894. Everything would be okay

  895. for him and his kingdom.

  896. And that's it

  897. with Jesus.

  898. Jesus is our blameless king

  899. who wholeheartedly

  900. follows his father.

  901. And so you and I know

  902. everything will be okay

  903. because my king

  904. is blameless

  905. and following

  906. the plan of the father.

  907. God is on his side.

  908. We are in his church.

  909. You know,

  910. the story of the Bible

  911. is that God's king wins.

  912. Jesus wins.

  913. Blameless Jesus wins

  914. because God is with him.

  915. And so if you're trusting

  916. in him this morning,

  917. then the truth is

  918. you and I

  919. will win too.

  920. There will be a day

  921. when every tear

  922. will be wiped away,

  923. every cancer

  924. will be healed,

  925. every panic attack

  926. will be soothed,

  927. every exam

  928. will be smashed,

  929. every job

  930. will be a joy,

  931. every relationship

  932. will be a delight,

  933. every problem

  934. will be solved,

  935. every money worry

  936. will be gone,

  937. every angry outburst

  938. will be dissolved,

  939. every addiction

  940. will be cracked.

  941. Why?

  942. Because the son,

  943. by the power of the spirit

  944. in the plan of the father,

  945. blamelessly obeyed

  946. and so everything

  947. will be under his feet.

  948. And until that day,

  949. we follow him,

  950. wholeheartedly

  951. walking towards him,

  952. losing our lives

  953. in joyful praise

  954. of his greatness.

  955. Let me pray

  956. and then we'll respond

  957. and so on.

  958. Heavenly Father,

  959. we want to thank you

  960. for the Lord Jesus.

  961. We thank you

  962. that the blessings

  963. of a future kingdom

  964. where it will be

  965. our joy

  966. and our bliss

  967. for all eternity

  968. to be with you.

  969. Come to us

  970. through his wholehearted

  971. obedience.

  972. And Lord,

  973. we want to pray

  974. that you would make us

  975. more like Jesus.

  976. That like David,

  977. like Jesus,

  978. we would wholeheartedly

  979. follow you,

  980. trusting in you,

  981. obeying you.

  982. Please,

  983. we pray,

  984. recognizing maybe

  985. for some of us

  986. this morning,

  987. we've just

  988. gotten waylaid.

  989. We've wandered off,

  990. got distracted.

  991. Bring us back,

  992. we pray.

  993. Keep us going.

  994. We pray that it would

  995. be our joy

  996. and our delight

  997. to be able to say

  998. that we have run

  999. the race.

  1000. We've completed

  1001. the task

1002. that you have given us.

1003. All glory to your name.

  1004. Amen.

  1005. Amen.

  1006. Amen.

  1007. Amen.

  1008. Amen.

  1009. Amen.

  1010. Amen.

  1011. Amen.

  1012. Amen.

  1013. Amen.
