  1. Great, let me read for us and then pray for Nick and for us. Psalm 10.

  2. Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

  3. In his arrogance, the wicked man hunts down the weak who are caught in the schemes he devises.

  4. He boasts about the cravings of his heart. He blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord.

  5. In his pride, the wicked man does not seek him. In all his thoughts, there is no room for God.

  6. His ways are always prosperous. Your laws are rejected by him and he sneers at all his enemies.

  7. He says to himself, nothing will ever shake me. He swears, no one will ever do me harm.

  8. His mouth is full of lies and threats. Trouble and evil are under his tongue.

  9. He lies in wait near the villages. From ambush, he murders the innocent.

  10. His eyes watch in secret for his victims. Like a lion in cover, he lies in wait.

  11. He lies in wait to catch the helpless. He catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.

  12. His victims are crushed. They collapse. They fall under his strength.

  13. He says to himself, God will never notice. He covers his face and never sees.

  14. Arise, Lord. Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.

  15. Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, he won't call me to account?

  16. But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted. You consider their grief and take it in hand.

  17. The victims commit themselves to you. You are the helper of the fatherless.

  18. Break the arm of the wicked man. Call the evildoer to account for his wickedness.

  19. That would not otherwise be found out. The Lord is king forever and ever.

  20. The nations will perish from his land. You, Lord, hear the desire of the afflicted.

  21. You encourage them and you listen to their cry.

  22. Defending the fatherless and the oppressed.

  23. Let me pray for us. And then Nick, over to you.

  24. Heavenly Father, we do pray and ask that you would speak to us from your words.

  25. We thank you that our joyful confidence is that as your word is open, you are by your spirit at work.

  26. And we pray that that might be our experience this evening.

  27. Help Nick as he speaks. Help all of us as we listen, we pray.

  28. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  29. Thanks, Steve.

  30. Why, Lord, do you stand far off?

  31. Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

  32. Does it ever seem to you that God is absent in your times of trouble?

  33. That his attention is elsewhere?

  34. Maybe you're just not that important to him.

  35. After all, God has a universe to run.

  36. Is God turning a blind eye to all the injustice happening everywhere?

  37. It can often feel like that.

  38. And indeed, looking at the news every day, there are constant examples of injustice,

  39. of the strong praying on the weak.

  40. On Wednesday evening last week, during our prayer meeting, we watched an Open Doors video

  41. about the internally displaced people of Nigeria.

  42. They're persecuted Christians who have been forced away from their lands and their homes

  43. to live in tents.

  44. And they're reduced to protecting themselves from the sun with bits of cardboard.

  45. They're far from their homes.

  46. And they struggle to find work to earn even a day's food.

  47. Why does God seem far away?

  48. So, this is how the psalmist begins, Psalm 10.

  49. But before we look into that question,

  50. just a quick word on the overall structure of this psalm of lament.

  51. It can be broken down into four sections.

  52. The first one is the first verse.

  53. The opening cry to the Lord, where are you?

  54. And the second goes from verses 2 to 11.

  55. David is bringing the wicked and their ways before the Lord.

  56. And then we have verses 12 to 15, where David calls on the Lord to act.

  57. And he also reminds himself of who God is and what he does.

  58. And in the final section, David concludes by declaring more facts about God.

  59. Not only to bolster his own faith and to wait upon him,

  60. but also to declare and acknowledge who God is.

  61. So, let's start with the first verse.

  62. David is in pain at God's apparent aloofness.

  63. Lord, there is so much wickedness. Where are you?

  64. Well, spoiler alert, God is not far away.

  65. He's right there with the psalmist.

  66. And he's right there with us.

  67. In our everyday dealings in life,

  68. God seeming to be distant is more a reflection

  69. on our own state of being with regards to God

  70. than his to us.

  71. Our unbelief or our lack of faith in God

  72. in whatever difficult situation we're in

  73. can make us think this way.

  74. But for the believer especially,

  75. we must never forget Jesus' words

  76. in the second half of John chapter 4,

    John 4 chapter mention

  77. which should be on page 1082.

  78. And I'll just read a few verses from verse 15.

  79. So, Jesus said,

  80. If you love me, keep my commands.

  81. And I will ask the Father,

  82. and he will give you another advocate to help you

  83. and be with you forever,

  84. the Spirit of truth.

  85. The world cannot accept him

  86. because it neither sees him nor knows him,

  87. but you know him,

  88. for he lives with you

  89. and will be in you.

  90. I will not leave you as orphans.

  91. I will come to you.

  92. And jumping down to verse 23,

  93. Jesus replied,

  94. Anyone who loves me

  95. will obey my teaching.

  96. My Father will love them,

  97. and we will come to them

  98. and make our home with them.

  99. Anyone who does not love me

  100. will not obey my teaching.

  101. These words you hear

  102. are not my own.

  103. They belong to the Father who sent me.

  104. So, for the Christian,

  105. the almighty, infinite,

  106. God of the universe and beyond

  107. has made his home in us.

  108. Jesus' words from the Father

  109. mean without a shadow of doubt

  110. that they come to us.

  111. They live with us.

  112. They're in us.

  113. And you can't get any nearer than that.

  114. So, in the next section,

  115. David puts before the Lord,

  116. so from verses 2 to 11,

  117. he puts before the Lord

  118. the iniquity of the wicked

  119. that he sees all around him

  120. against not only the weak and innocent,

  121. but also towards God.

  122. So, let's review some of the qualities

  123. of the wicked as exposed by David.

  124. They're arrogant.

  125. They're boastful.

  126. They're greedy.

  127. Proud.

  128. They have an enmity to God.

  129. They're evil-tongued.

  130. And they're murderous.

  131. And there's certainly more that

  132. could be taken from

  133. what David's written down.

  134. And how does he describe the victims?

  135. They're weak.

  136. Innocent.

  137. Helpless.

  138. Crushed.

  139. Murdered.

  140. So, we'll next look at the fallacies

  141. of the wicked person's view of God.

  142. But it's also worth pausing to reflect

  143. whether we are ourselves

  144. are guilty of any of these condemnations.

  145. What were we like before God saved us

  146. through Christ?

  147. We are still works in progress.

  148. So, we still fall and we still sin.

  149. And even whilst the Holy Spirit resides in us,

  150. what things might we recognize in ourselves

  151. in this psalm

  152. that demand repentance and forgiveness from God?

  153. So, let's have a look at the wicked person's attitude

  154. towards God

  155. and the lies that they tell themselves.

  156. They include renouncing or reviling the Lord.

  157. Believing there is no God.

  158. Believing that they are somehow immortal and invincible.

  159. They believe that God won't see their sin

  160. but they can hide their sin from God

  161. and also believing that God won't hold them to account.

  162. In verse 3, the wicked man boasts

  163. about the cravings of his heart.

  164. He blesses the greedy and the unworthy

  165. and he reviles the Lord.

  166. And reviles is a strong word.

  167. The wicked man pushes God away from his thoughts.

  168. His focus is purely on himself

  169. and he lets everyone know it.

  170. His mantra is greed is good.

  171. In verse 4, we see how the wicked man's pride

  172. results in him not having any desire for God.

  173. His thoughts are crammed full of other things.

  174. To quote from Spurgeon's commentary on Psalm 10,

  175. he wrote,

  176. The only place where God is not

  177. is in the thoughts of the wicked.

  178. And this is a damning accusation.

  179. For where the God of heaven is not,

  180. the Lord of hell is reigning and raging.

  181. In the ESV translation, verse 4 ends,

  182. All his thoughts are,

  183. there is no God.

  184. So in all his dealings,

  185. he behaves as if there is no higher power.

  186. God's judgments are so far away,

  187. he believes that they are in another jurisdiction.

  188. In verse 6,

  189. the wicked man deludes himself in thinking

  190. no harm will ever befall him.

  191. He is self-confident and assured.

  192. And when we're young,

  193. it's very common for us to think and act

  194. as if we're never going to die,

  195. even as we see death all around us.

  196. And sometimes that continues as we get older,

  197. unless we've been given

  198. some kind of terminal diagnosis from a doctor.

  199. It's very common for us

  200. to not genuinely consider our own mortality.

  201. We may believe it won't happen to us,

  202. or that it's decades or years away.

  203. Ultimately, none of us know when our time is up.

  204. In one sense,

  205. it's like not knowing the time of Jesus' return.

  206. We must live our lives expecting him to return today,

  207. but we must also plan ahead sufficiently

  208. so that we can live the lives God has given us

  209. for his glory.

  210. So we must be ready to meet our maker.

  211. We can only do that if we acknowledge our own mortality,

  212. our own weakness,

  213. our sinfulness,

  214. and acknowledge his immortality,

  215. his power,

  216. his holiness,

  217. his goodness,

  218. and his grace through Christ Jesus.

  219. There's an irony hearing those

  220. that don't believe in God

  221. call out to him when something happens

  222. that does shake them,

  223. or when someone does do them harm.

  224. It is a natural instinct to call out and pray to God,

  225. even for those that don't follow Christ

  226. or try to live a godly life.

  227. In verse 11,

  228. the wicked man says to himself,

  229. God will never notice.

  230. He covers his face and never sees.

  231. But God sees all.

  232. And there's so many Bible verses we could look at.

  233. Proverbs 15, verse 3 is one.

    Proverbs 15:3

  234. It says,

  235. The eyes of the Lord are everywhere,

  236. keeping watch on the wicked and the good.

  237. And in verse 13,

  238. as I jump slightly outside the section,

  239. the psalmist cannot get his head around

  240. why the wicked man should revile God

  241. and delude himself into thinking

  242. that God won't call him to account.

  243. So the wicked man lives his life

  244. basing his actions and deeds,

  245. his motives and greed

  246. on this sandy foundation of lies,

  247. content to ignore God,

  248. and treat him with contempt,

  249. enabling him to think that

  250. his praying on the weak and innocent

  251. will be without consequence.

  252. So in the next section,

  253. verses 12 to 15,

  254. David is calling the Lord to action.

  255. Arise, Lord, lift up your hand, O God.

  256. Do not forget the helpless.

  257. And he calls on the Lord in verse 15

  258. to break the arm of the wicked man,

  259. thus rendering him unable

  260. to enact his wickedness

  261. and harm on the weak and helpless.

  262. David reminds himself in verse 14

  263. that God does see the trouble of the afflicted

  264. and does consider their grief,

  265. that he is the helper of the fatherless.

  266. He reminds himself in verse 15

  267. that God is able to take to account

  268. the evildoer for the wickedness

  269. that they have tried so hard to conceal.

  270. So what are the home truths

  271. that David has spelled out so far in the psalm?

  272. Well, that God is not far off

  273. because he's everywhere

  274. and he is with us.

  275. God is aware of everything that happens.

  276. He knows everything.

  277. God will hold everyone to account

  278. because God is just.

  279. And God does care for the afflicted.

  280. We read earlier in John 14

  281. that the Holy Spirit makes his home

  282. with those that God has saved.

  283. He is with us through affliction and grief.

  284. He understands.

  285. Let's turn to Romans 8

  286. and I'll read verses 26 to 30.

  287. It should be on page 1135.

  288. In the same way,

  289. the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

  290. We do not know what we ought to pray for,

  291. but the Spirit himself intercedes for us

  292. through wordless groans.

  293. And he who searches our hearts

  294. knows the mind of the Spirit

  295. because the Spirit intercedes for God's people

  296. in accordance with the will of God.

  297. And we know that in all things

  298. God works for the good of those who love him,

  299. who have been called according to his purpose.

  300. For those God foreknew,

  301. he also predestined to be conformed

  302. to the image of his Son,

  303. that he might be the firstborn

  304. among many brothers and sisters.

  305. And those he predestined,

  306. he also called.

  307. Those he called,

  308. he also justified.

  309. Those he justified,

  310. he also glorified.

  311. Paul goes on to write in verse 35,

  312. Many a believer suffers at the hands of wicked men.

  313. However,

  314. these wicked men are used by God

  315. to further his own plans and purposes.

  316. The wicked will receive from God

  317. what is due to them.

  318. God will judge,

  319. and there's no way around that.

  320. We've been going through the letter

  321. to the Philippians

  322. during our Sunday evenings this term,

  323. and one of the main themes is suffering,

  324. especially at the hands of men.

  325. Sometimes God will let you see

  326. the fruits of the suffering.

  327. For example,

  328. the Apostle Paul's suffering in chains

  329. resulted in the whole palace guard

  330. knowing that Paul was suffering,

  331. his suffering was because of his faith

  332. in Jesus Christ.

  333. And Paul did see the spread of the gospel

  334. in his own lifetime.

  335. Sometimes God will not let you see

  336. the fruits of the suffering.

  337. Part of Job's suffering

  338. was having the tribe of Chaldeans

  339. steal his camels

  340. and put his workers to death.

  341. Job lost his family

  342. at the hands of Satan,

  343. and he suffered much physical pain

  344. from Satan too.

  345. Whilst the Lord did restore Job afterwards,

  346. Job was none the wiser

  347. as to why all this suffering

  348. happened to him.

  349. Christ himself was beaten up,

  350. mocked, tortured,

  351. rejected, and executed

  352. at the hands of wicked men.

  353. In Matthew 27,

  354. we read that just as Jesus

  355. was nearing death,

  356. he called out,

  357. my God, my God,

  358. why have you forsaken me?

  359. So, here we see God

  360. hide his face away from Christ.

  361. Christ was completely alone,

  362. suffering on the cross.

  363. He was separated from the Father's love.

  364. And during that time,

  365. he received all the judgment

  366. and punishment

  367. that's for the sins due to us.

  368. He did this for all those

  369. that he has called,

  370. that he has justified

  371. and glorified,

  372. as we read in Romans 8.

  373. So Christ knows what it feels like

  374. to the max.

  375. Thankfully, that wasn't the end.

  376. Christ was raised from the dead

  377. and went up to heaven

  378. to sit at God's right hand.

  379. And he's interceding for us

  380. so that our sins

  381. are not counted against us,

  382. but against his own sacrifice

  383. on the cross.

  384. So, we're nearing

  385. the end of the psalm.

  386. So, we're at these final verses,

  387. 16 to 18.

  388. David is declaring to all

  389. that God is the king

  390. forever and ever.

  391. And we can take heart

  392. that our saviour

  393. and redeemer,

  394. Jesus Christ,

  395. is king forever and ever.

  396. Amen.

  397. And David reiterates

  398. that God does hear

  399. the desires of the afflicted,

  400. that he is a source

  401. of encouragement for them,

  402. and that he also listens

  403. to their cries and laments.

  404. Christ says in Matthew 11,

  405. in verses 28 to 30,

  406. Come to me,

  407. all you who are weary

  408. and burdened,

  409. and I will give you rest.

  410. Take my yoke upon you

  411. and learn from me,

  412. for I am gentle

  413. and humble in heart,

  414. and you will find rest

  415. for your souls.

  416. For my yoke is easy

  417. and my burden is light.

  418. He defends those

  419. without a defender

  420. and those under the cough.

  421. Christ is our defender,

  422. our counsellor,

  423. our comforter,

  424. our saviour,

  425. our redeemer.

  426. And the psalmist

  427. looks forward

  428. to the day

  429. when the nations

  430. will perish

  431. from his land,

  432. and mere earthly mortals

  433. will never again

  434. strike terror.

  435. Christ will return.

  436. He is our hope

  437. in life and death.

  438. We look forward

  439. to a new heavens

  440. and a new earth,

  441. where we will be

  442. resurrected in new bodies,

  443. and through Christ

  444. we will be absent of sin.

  445. The wicked

  446. will not be present.

  447. And as we close,

  448. I must mention

  449. Christ's command

  450. to love our enemies

  451. in Matthew 5.

  452. It is a difficult thing

  453. to do at the best of times,

  454. and at the very least

  455. we should pray for them

  456. in earnest.

  457. Since each of us

  458. was once an enemy

  459. of God,

  460. God desires

  461. none to perish,

  462. for every day

  463. God grants

  464. before Christ's return

  465. is a day of salvation

  466. for someone.

  467. And not just

  468. for ordinary

  469. I'm a good person

  470. because I haven't

  471. murdered anyone

  472. or stolen anything

  473. folk,

  474. but also

  475. for murderers

  476. and thieves

  477. and worse.

  478. So,

  479. I will finish

  480. with these words

  481. from Revelation 21.

  482. Then I saw

  483. a new heaven

  484. and a new earth.

  485. For the first heaven

  486. and the first earth

  487. had passed away.

  488. There was no longer

  489. any sea.

  490. I saw the holy city,

  491. the new Jerusalem,

  492. coming down

  493. out of heaven

  494. from God,

  495. prepared as a bride

  496. beautifully dressed

  497. for her husband.

  498. And I heard

  499. a loud voice

  500. from the throne

  501. saying,

  502. Look,

  503. God's dwelling place

  504. is now among

  505. the people

  506. and he will dwell

  507. with them.

  508. They will be his people

  509. and God himself

  510. will be with them

  511. and be their God.

  512. He will wipe

  513. every tear

  514. from their eyes.

  515. There will be

  516. no more death

  517. or mourning

  518. or crying

  519. or pain

  520. for the old

  521. order of things

  522. has passed away.

  523. And he who was

  524. seated on the throne

  525. and said,

  526. I am making

  527. everything new.

  528. And then he said,

  529. Write this down

  530. for these words

  531. are trustworthy

  532. and true.

  533. He said to me,

  534. It is done.

  535. I am the Alpha

  536. and the Omega,

  537. the beginning

  538. and end.

  539. To the thirsty

  540. I will give water

  541. without cost

  542. from the spring

  543. of the water of life.

  544. And those who are

  545. victorious

  546. will inherit

  547. all this.

  548. And I will be

  549. their God

  550. and they will be

  551. my children.

  552. But the cowardly,

  553. the unbelieving,

  554. the vile,

  555. the murderers,

  556. the sexually immoral,

  557. those who practice

  558. magic arts,

  559. the idolaters

  560. and all liars,

  561. they will be consigned

  562. to the fiery lake

  563. of burning sulfur.

  564. And this is

  565. the second death.

  566. So take courage.

  567. God is with us

  568. even when it seems

  569. he's not.

  570. and when we're

  571. going through

  572. really difficult times

  573. at whoever's hands,

  574. whether it's

  575. man's hands

  576. or nature's.

  577. Thank you.

  578. Amen.

  579. Thank you, Nate.

  580. Let's pray.

  581. Father,

  582. we do thank you

  583. for what we've heard.

  584. We thank you

  585. that you're not

  586. absent in our suffering.

  587. You're not absent

  588. from this world

  589. of suffering.

  590. But thank you

  591. that like Nick

  592. has told us

  593. in the person

  594. of the Lord Jesus,

  595. you have entered

  596. into this suffering world,

  597. paid for our sin

  598. and bought at great cost

  599. a people for yourself

  600. who inhabit,

  601. will inhabit

  602. a remade world

  603. where there is

  604. no more sickness

  605. or suffering

  606. or death

  607. or grief.

  608. Keep us going

  609. until that day.

  610. Keep us speaking

  611. of you,

  612. looking to you,

  613. living for you,

  614. we ask

  615. in Jesus' name.

  616. Amen.

  617. Amen.

  618. Amen.
