  1. So I'm going to read God's word for us, 2 Samuel chapter 24.

    2 Samuel 24 chapter mention

  2. I'm going to read the whole chapter to us.

  3. We are right at the end of our series in 2 Samuel.

  4. Let's listen to God's word.

  5. Again, the anger of the Lord burned against Israel,

  6. and he incited David against them, saying,

  7. go and take a census of Israel and Judah.

  8. So the king said to Joab and the army commanders with him,

  9. go throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba

  10. and enroll the fighting men so that I may know how many there are.

  11. But Joab replied to the king,

  12. may the Lord your God multiply the troops 100 times over

  13. and may the eyes of my Lord the king see it.

  14. But why does my Lord the king want to do such a thing?

  15. The king's word, however, overruled Joab and the army commanders,

  16. so they left the presence of the king

  17. to enroll the fighting men of Israel.

  18. After crossing the Jordan, they camped near Aror,

  19. south of the town in the gorge,

  20. and then went through Gad and on to Jazir.

  21. They went to Gilead and to the region of Tahim Hodshi

  22. and to Danjan and round towards the Sidon.

  23. When they went towards the fortress of Tyre

  24. and all the time of the Hivites and the Canaanites,

  25. finally they went on to Beersheba in the Negev of Judah.

  26. After they'd gone through the entire land,

  27. they came back to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and 20 days.

  28. Joab reported the number of the fighting men to the king.

  29. In Israel, there were 800,000 able-bodied men who could handle a sword,

  30. and in Judah, 500,000.

  31. David was conscience-stricken after he had counted the fighting men,

  32. and he said to the Lord,

  33. I have sinned greatly in what I have done.

  34. Now, Lord, I beg you,

  35. take away the guilt of your servant.

  36. I have done a very foolish thing.

  37. Before David got up the next morning,

  38. the word of the Lord had come to Gad the prophet,

  39. David's seer.

  40. Go and tell David,

  41. this is what the Lord says.

  42. I am giving you three options.

  43. Choose one of them for me to carry out against you.

  44. So Gad went to David and said to him,

  45. Shall there come on you three years of famine in your land?

  46. Or three months of fleeing from your enemies while they pursue you?

  47. Or three days of plague in your land?

  48. Now then, think it over and decide

  49. how I should answer the one who sent me.

  50. David said to Gad,

  51. I am in deep distress.

  52. Let us fall into the hands of the Lord,

  53. for his mercy is great.

  54. But do not let me fall into human hands.

  55. So the Lord sent a plague on Israel

  56. from that morning until the end of the time designated,

  57. and 70,000 of the people died.

  58. The people from Dan to Beersheba died.

  59. When the angel stretched out his hand to destroy Jerusalem,

  60. the Lord relented concerning the disaster

  61. and said to the angel who was afflicting the people,

  62. Enough!

  63. Withdraw your hand.

  64. The angel of the Lord was then at the threshing floor

  65. of Arunah the Jebusite.

  66. When David saw the angel who was striking down the people,

  67. he said to the Lord,

  68. I have sinned.

  69. I, the shepherd, have done wrong.

  70. But these are but sheep.

  71. What have they done?

  72. Let your hand fall on me and my family.

  73. On that day, Gad went to David and said to him,

  74. Go up and build an altar to the Lord

  75. on the threshing floor of Arunah the Jebusite.

  76. So David went up as the Lord had commanded through Gad.

  77. When Arunah looked and saw the king

  78. and his officials coming towards him,

  79. he went out and bowed down before the king

  80. with his face to the ground.

  81. Arunah said,

  82. Why has my Lord the king come to his servant?

  83. To buy your threshing floor, David answered,

  84. so that I can build an altar to the Lord

  85. so that the plague on the people may be stopped.

  86. Arunah said to David,

  87. Let my Lord the king take whatever he wishes

  88. and offer it up.

  89. Here are oxen for the burnt offering

  90. and here are the threshing sledges

  91. and ox yokes for the woods.

  92. Your majesty, Arunah gives all of this to the king.

  93. Arunah also said to him,

  94. May the Lord your God accept you.

  95. But the king replied to Arunah,

  96. No, I insist on paying for it.

  97. I will not sacrifice to the Lord my God

  98. burnt offerings that cost me nothing.

  99. So David brought the threshing floor

  100. and the oxen and paid 50 shekels of silver for them.

  101. David built an altar to the Lord there

  102. and sacrificed burnt offerings

  103. and fellowship offerings.

  104. Then the Lord answered his prayer

  105. on behalf of the land

  106. and the plague on Israel was stopped.

  107. Well, this is God's word for us this morning

  108. and we're going to look at it together.

  109. Let me pray very briefly

  110. and ask for the Lord's help.

  111. Father, we thank you for all that we have seen

  112. in the book of 2 Samuel

  113. and we pray even now

  114. that as we consider it again together

  115. that you might speak to us

  116. by your spirit through your word.

  117. More than just that,

  118. we pray please that you might change us,

  119. move our hearts which are slow to trust,

  120. to trust you and love you.

  121. Pray for those who maybe

  122. have never really understood

  123. who you are or never trusted you.

  124. May you open their eyes.

  125. May all of us,

  126. me as I preach

  127. and all of us as we listen,

  128. encounter you in your word,

  129. we pray in Jesus' name.

  130. Amen.

  131. I wonder whether you've watched this TV show.

  132. A few of us in our family

  133. have been watching it together.

  134. It's called The Majorca Files.

  135. Has anyone seen The Majorca Files?

  136. It's kind of like a whodunit type series.

  137. It's very kind of sedate.

  138. It's a British and a German detective

  139. both working in Majorca.

  140. They're kind of a bit hapless,

  141. so they don't really know what they're doing.

  142. And in the episode that we watched the other day,

  143. these two detectives had been asked

  144. by a senior police officer from Madrid

  145. to try and catch a conman.

  146. So they did.

  147. These two hapless detectives

  148. managed to catch the conman

  149. and they chased him through the town.

  150. They cuffed him

  151. and put him in the back

  152. of the senior police officer from Madrid's car.

  153. As they were driving away from it,

  154. really feeling quite satisfied with themselves,

  155. they realized and it dawned on them

  156. that the conman was not the person

  157. that they'd put in the back

  158. of the senior police officer's car,

  159. but the senior police officer himself.

  160. So they were distressed.

  161. What are we going to do now?

  162. So they spun the car around

  163. and they chased after

  164. the senior police officer from Madrid.

  165. Then they were chasing him down

  166. and that involved speedboats

  167. and trying to chase him down,

  168. trying to shoot him,

  169. all that sort of stuff.

  170. And it looked like he'd got away.

  171. And then what happened

  172. was the woman in charge

  173. of the Majorca police

  174. turned up with a whole load

  175. of police boats

  176. and arrested the senior police officer

  177. and the guy that they'd caught and cuffed.

  178. And it turns out

  179. that all along,

  180. this Majorca commander

  181. in charge of the police

  182. knew exactly what was happening

  183. and knew that her two hapless detectives

  184. were after the wrong person.

  185. So they'd let it happen.

  186. Now, in a kind of bizarre

  187. sort of roundabout way,

  188. that is kind of what's happening

  189. in 2 Samuel.

  190. In 2 Samuel,

  191. you discover, don't you,

  192. that 70,000 Israelites

  193. died in a plague, right?

  194. But it's not the natural disaster

  195. that you might have thought.

  196. You know, you might just think,

  197. oh, well, plagues happen,

  198. don't they?

  199. We know that.

  200. And this one happens.

  201. But it's not that

  202. because this plague comes

  203. as judgment against David's sin.

  204. He chooses it, doesn't he?

  205. Instead of three years of famine

  206. or three months of military defeat,

  207. he says,

  208. I'll have three days of plague.

  209. And when you see that,

  210. you realize it's not just that either.

  211. Rather, that we find

  212. that behind all of that

  213. is God and his plan.

  214. God in sovereign power

  215. who is executing judgment

  216. on the people of Israel,

  217. even against David's sin

  218. that he had incited

  219. and the plague that followed.

  220. You might remember

  221. that we're at the conclusion

  222. of the book of 2 Samuel.

  223. So basically,

  224. these last few chapters,

  225. picking it up

  226. from chapter 21,

  227. these chapters

  228. are the conclusion,

  229. the summary,

  230. the epilogue

  231. at the end

  232. of the book of 2 Samuel.

  233. And really,

  234. the writer is trying

  235. to round off

  236. his whole book

  237. and trying to tell you

  238. what's been going on.

  239. And it's not

  240. an ordinary history book.

  241. The book is not ending

  242. with the death of David.

  243. We've now

  244. sort of leapt back

  245. into the story of David

  246. to an unidentified point

  247. in David's history.

  248. But the writer thinks

  249. if you understand

  250. this story

  251. and what's happening here,

  252. you will understand

  253. the whole book.

  254. This is the sort of summary.

  255. And what the writer

  256. wants us to understand

  257. is that everything

  258. that's been going on

  259. in the book,

  260. so Absalom's rebellion,

  261. Joab's murders,

  262. David's adultery,

  263. Amnon's rape,

  264. in all of that,

  265. even though God

  266. often was not

  267. mentioned directly,

  268. what the writer

  269. now wants you

  270. to understand

  271. is that all the time,

  272. God was there

  273. and God was in charge.

  274. God was ruling

  275. and reigning.

  276. God has been behind it all,

  277. the good and the evil

  278. accomplishing his purposes.

  279. Let me try

  280. and demonstrate that to you.

  281. It's there in verse 1.

  282. Look down at verse 1.

  283. Let me read it to you again.

  284. Again,

  285. the anger of the Lord

  286. burned against Israel

  287. and he incited David

  288. against them,

  289. saying,

  290. go and take a census

  291. of Israel and Judah.

  292. Just keep your eyes

  293. down on the verse

  294. and work through it

  295. backwards with me

  296. for a moment.

  297. Start at the end.

  298. King David

  299. is the speaker

  300. of the words

  301. in quotation marks.

  302. He's declaring

  303. that a census

  304. of Israel and Judah

  305. should be taken.

  306. Specifically,

  307. it turns out,

  308. and we discovered this,

  309. it's a census

  310. of their fighting men.

  311. There are 1.3 million

  312. fighting men in Israel,

  313. 800,000 in Israel,

  314. 500,000 in Judah.

  315. Now,

  316. the whole point

  317. of the chapter

  318. rests on the idea

  319. that you understand

  320. that David's instruction

  321. there to go

  322. and take a census

  323. is a sinful instruction.

  324. It was a wicked thing

  325. for him to do.

  326. You see that,

  327. don't you,

  328. in Joab's response

  329. and the commanders

  330. in verses 3 and 4.

  331. They're objecting,

  332. aren't they?

  333. Don't do this, David.

  334. We don't want to do this.

  335. Don't do this.

  336. They try and persuade

  337. David out of it.

  338. But if you look down

  339. at verse 10,

  340. even David himself

  341. acknowledges

  342. that it was sinful.

  343. David was conscience-stricken

  344. after he counted

  345. the fighting men.

  346. And he said to the Lord,

  347. Lord,

  348. I have sinned greatly

  349. in what I have done.

  350. Now,

  351. Lord,

  352. I beg you,

  353. take away the guilt

  354. of your servant.

  355. I have done

  356. a very foolish thing.

  357. Now,

  358. what you need to understand

  359. is not that censuses

  360. themselves are immoral

  361. or wrong always.

  362. The book of Exodus

  363. in chapter 30

  364. permits the leaders

  365. of God's people

  366. to take censuses

  367. of the people of Israel.

  368. It gives them

  369. certain conditions

  370. under which they're

  371. to do it.

  372. The book of Numbers

  373. in your Bible

  374. is actually centered

  375. around two censuses

  376. of God's people.

  377. So it's not always wrong

  378. to count the people,

  379. but it is wrong

  380. in certain circumstances

  381. and for certain reasons.

  382. And we're not told

  383. exactly why that is here,

  384. but still we're left

  385. in no doubt

  386. that David's intention

  387. in taking the census

  388. was a sinful one.

  389. Perhaps it was pride.

  390. I want to see

  391. how big my army is.

  392. Let me work out

  393. how powerful

  394. I really am,

  395. maybe.

  396. We're just not quite sure

  397. what the intention was,

  398. but we are told

  399. that it is sinful.

  400. Perhaps he didn't

  401. collect the relevant tax

  402. that God had told him to

  403. in the book of Exodus.

  404. Now it was sinful

  405. and the people knew it.

  406. Now despite that

  407. and despite the fact

  408. that by verse 10

  409. David is conscience stricken,

  410. still what you need

  411. to notice

  412. in the beginning

  413. of the chapter

  414. is that David

  415. is really determined

  416. to do this sinful thing.

  417. Notice how verse 4

  418. puts it.

  419. David's word prevails

  420. over the objections

  421. of Joab

  422. and his army commanders.

  423. Joab and the army commanders

  424. are saying,

  425. please David,

  426. don't do this,

  427. don't do this.

  428. But David's word prevails.

  429. David gets his way.

  430. Now if that's all

  431. there was in verse 1,

  432. if all you had

  433. in verse 1

  434. was David saying,

  435. go and take a census

  436. of Israel and Judah

  437. and you knew it was sinful,

  438. then what you would have

  439. in some ways

  440. is something a bit similar

  441. to the rest of the things

  442. going on in 2 Samuel

  443. with the mess

  444. that's meant.

  445. You know,

  446. Amnon desires Tamar

  447. and makes a mess.

  448. Absalom desires the nation,

  449. makes a mess.

  450. David desires a census,

  451. makes a mess.

  452. But there's more to it

  453. than that

  454. because there's a twist

  455. here, isn't there?

  456. It turns out

  457. that the chief of police

  458. knew all along

  459. and knew exactly

  460. what was happening

  461. and was behind it all.

  462. Verse 1,

  463. above and behind,

  464. overruling everything

  465. that happens

  466. is God.

  467. The taking of the census,

  468. David's desire

  469. to take a census

  470. is verse 1,

  471. what?

  472. Incited by God.

  473. In other words,

  474. God is leading David.

  475. He's leading him

  476. not against his will,

  477. yet David wants

  478. to do it as well.

  479. He was willingly led,

  480. but still,

  481. chapter 24,

  482. verse 1,

  483. God incited David

  484. to want to take

  485. this census

  486. to punish

  487. the people of Israel.

  488. Now,

  489. God is angry,

  490. isn't he?

  491. He is burning with anger,

  492. we find at the beginning

  493. of verse 1.

  494. He is heated up

  495. against the people of Israel

  496. for some sin or behavior

  497. that's not directly recorded

  498. for us in the chapter.

  499. In other words,

  500. the story is not just

  501. the story of a sort of

  502. hapless David

  503. blundering into sin

  504. by accident,

  505. nor is it the story

  506. of innocent Israel

  507. getting caught up

  508. in the wickedness of David.

  509. Now,

  510. here's God

  511. in righteous anger,

  512. burning against

  513. the people of God,

  514. inciting David

  515. to take a sinful census

  516. so that judgment

  517. might fall

  518. on all the people.

  519. There's a parallel account

  520. in 1 Chronicles 21,

    1 Chronicles 21:1

  521. verse 1.

  522. You can turn to it

  523. if you wanted to,

  524. but there,

  525. in 1 Chronicles 21,

    1 Chronicles 21:1

  526. verse 1,

  527. you're told that actually

  528. it is Satan

  529. who incites David.

  530. It says that Satan

  531. rose up against Israel

  532. and incited David

  533. to take the census.

  534. Now,

  535. that's not because

  536. 1 Chronicles

  537. and 2 Samuel

  538. are contradicting

  539. one another.

  540. Rather,

  541. it seems as though

  542. God's incitement

  543. of David

  544. is done through Satan.

  545. God is not the author

  546. of David's sin.

  547. He's not morally

  548. responsible for it.

  549. Instead,

  550. while Satan desires

  551. to ruin the people

  552. and David desires

  553. to count the people

  554. in pride,

  555. still God stands

  556. behind it all

  557. in his ruling

  558. and reigning.

  559. God incites David

  560. against the people

  561. of Israel

  562. in punishment

  563. for their sin

  564. and 70,000 people die.

  565. I don't know

  566. how well you guys

  567. remember Sermon Series.

  568. Okay,

  569. so I wonder

  570. if you might

  571. possibly remember

  572. when we were looking

  573. at 2 Samuel chapter,

  574. I think it was chapter 10,

  575. we talked about

  576. the rollercoaster

  577. of 2 Samuel.

  578. We said that we'd

  579. arrived at the top.

  580. You know how rollercoasters,

  581. they take you up,

  582. don't they,

  583. and up and up and up

  584. and you get to the very top

  585. and then they let you go

  586. and you fly down.

  587. Well,

  588. that's what 2 Samuel does.

  589. And chapter 8,

  590. you achieve the high point

  591. of 2 Samuel,

  592. right,

  593. and you're sort of

  594. suspended there

  595. for a couple of chapters

  596. as we see David

  597. and all his greatness

  598. and then you fly down

  599. the rollercoaster,

  600. right,

  601. and it's just plummeting

  602. the depths of David's sin

  603. and the chaos

  604. that comes as a result.

  605. But actually what you find

  606. by the time you get

  607. to chapter 24

  608. is that that

  609. was not a very good

  610. illustration of what's going on

  611. because it's not a rollercoaster

  612. where there's no driver

  613. and where you're just going

  614. in an aimless loop.

  615. Actually,

  616. it's more like a proper train

  617. and God himself

  618. is the driver

  619. and knows exactly

  620. where he's going

  621. and exactly what he's doing.

  622. The train is going somewhere.

  623. It's not going just the direction

  624. of David's wicked desires.

  625. Instead,

  626. the direction is led

  627. by the Lord himself.

  628. Now,

  629. I think if you're following

  630. at this point,

  631. you should at least

  632. have some questions

  633. flying around your head.

  634. Not,

  635. what are we going to have

  636. for dinner,

  637. but some questions

  638. about the nature of God

  639. and what he's like.

  640. You should be thinking,

  641. how can God

  642. incite David into sin

  643. without being wicked himself?

  644. How can I believe

  645. in a God

  646. who is involved

  647. like that

  648. in David's life

  649. and is still claiming

  650. to be good?

  651. Doesn't the Bible say

  652. that God can't tempt

  653. people to sin?

  654. That every good

  655. and perfect gift

  656. comes from above?

  657. How is it now

  658. that in 2 Samuel 24 verse 1,

    2 Samuel 24:1

  659. I find God

  660. inciting the king of Israel

  661. to do something

  662. which we know

  663. was not a good thing to do?

  664. Now,

  665. those are brilliant questions

  666. and they're not very easy

  667. questions to answer,

  668. but we must say

  669. that it must be true

  670. that God is good.

  671. The Bible is so very clear

  672. on that.

  673. But whilst it doesn't

  674. undermine God's goodness,

  675. still,

  676. 2 Samuel 24 verse 1

    2 Samuel 24:1

  677. must also be true.

  678. Which means that we

  679. we live,

  680. don't we,

  681. in a world

  682. which is ruled

  683. and reigned

  684. by a God

  685. who is good.

  686. A God who in his goodness

  687. and his moral perfection

  688. without ever undermining

  689. any of it,

  690. without becoming

  691. wicked himself,

  692. still,

  693. in uncompromising goodness,

  694. he rules and reigns

  695. and sovereignly rules

  696. even over

  697. the sinful intentions

  698. of wicked people's hearts

  699. in order to accomplish

  700. his purposes.

  701. I know it's so easy

  702. for me to say that

  703. and it's easy for me

  704. to look at you

  705. and think,

  706. I don't know

  707. whether you've got that.

  708. But let me say it again

  709. because it's incredible.

  710. God in moral perfection

  711. rules and reigns

  712. over our world

  713. in such a way

  714. that even the sinful

  715. intentions of the hearts

  716. of people who rebel

  717. against him

  718. are still in his hands.

  719. Still in his hands.

  720. He can still do

  721. his purposes

  722. and his plans.

  723. So at the end of the book

  724. which has catalogued

  725. the disasters

  726. of the sinfulness

  727. of men and women,

  728. mostly men to be fair,

  729. but men and women,

  730. here at the end of the book

  731. you find that God

  732. has not lost the plot,

  733. he's not left the stage,

  734. he's not given up,

  735. rather God has been

  736. driving it all along,

  737. accomplishing his purposes.

  738. And let me show you that

  739. in two specific areas.

  740. That God is sovereign

  741. over our world

  742. and the intentions

  743. of human hearts

  744. in judgment

  745. and in salvation.

  746. So let's start

  747. with in judgment.

  748. This is where verse one starts.

  749. God rules over sin

  750. in judgment.

  751. God is angry, isn't he,

  752. with the people of Israel.

  753. We're not told why.

  754. There are plenty of possibilities

  755. as you read

  756. the book of 2 Samuel.

  757. Sort of depends

  758. on when you think

  759. these events happened.

  760. But the point is

  761. that God's desire

  762. to judge Israel

  763. leads him to incite David,

  764. using David's desire

  765. to sinfully count the army

  766. against the people

  767. so that they're judged.

  768. I think as we watch

  769. the things happening

  770. in our world,

  771. it's common for us

  772. to feel there's a sort

  773. of sense of hopelessness,

  774. isn't there,

  775. in our world?

  776. Oh, there's never

  777. any justice.

  778. Evil people always seem

  779. to be able to get away

  780. with it.

  781. Wicked people seem untouchable.

  782. Good people seem

  783. so inconsistent.

  784. Wickedness seems spiraling

  785. out of control.

  786. But in 2 Samuel 24,

  787. you're introduced

  788. to this idea

  789. that no,

  790. God is in charge of it.

  791. And he is able

  792. to bring sin

  793. back on itself.

  794. He's able to sort of

  795. pile up wickedness

  796. in judgment

  797. on sin itself.

  798. Not necessarily always

  799. in a kind of instant

  800. karma kind of way

  801. that if you rob a bank,

  802. you'll get knocked over

  803. by a bus

  804. as you try and run away.

  805. But rather that

  806. in our world

  807. that God has made,

  808. there is a connection

  809. between sin

  810. and more sin

  811. in God's righteousness

  812. in the way

  813. that he has hardwired

  814. our world.

  815. Now think about it.

  816. If you're a person

  817. who is sinfully angry

  818. with people all the time,

  819. you can expect

  820. to experience

  821. sinful anger

  822. coming back at you,

  823. can't you?

  824. Because that's the way

  825. that God has made the world.

  826. Sin grows sin

  827. in judgment at sin.

  828. If you're full

  829. of sinful self-interest,

  830. you are insecurely

  831. thinking about yourself

  832. all the time,

  833. you can expect

  834. to experience

  835. a sort of shallowness

  836. in your relationships

  837. or a sinful dismissiveness

  838. of others in return

  839. because that's the way

  840. the world works.

  841. Galatians 6

  842. talks about it

  843. in the context

  844. of withholding support

  845. from those

  846. who teach the scriptures

  847. and it says,

  848. do not be deceived.

  849. God is not mocked

  850. for whatever one sows,

  851. that will he also reap.

  852. All of it which make us

  853. sit up and think,

  854. you know,

  855. wow, God,

  856. this is how you've wired

  857. the world.

  858. 1 Corinthians 11

  859. talks about people

  860. in the church dying

  861. because of the way

  862. they treated one another

  863. in the Lord's Supper.

  864. Now, we might not be able

  865. to always draw the lines

  866. super clearly

  867. and I don't think

  868. we're supposed to.

  869. I think the Bible says

  870. that innocent people

  871. suffer innocently as well,

  872. but actually we live

  873. in a world

  874. that has been handed over

  875. by God

  876. to the sinful desires

  877. of people,

  878. not in an absence

  879. of his control,

  880. but in his judgments.

  881. And so here in 2 Samuel 24,

  882. sinful Israel

  883. have a sinning king

  884. because God

  885. is judging them.

  886. Interestingly,

  887. the New Testament

  888. talks about it

  889. even more

  890. than just a sort of

  891. sowing and reaping.

  892. In Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  893. Paul says

  894. that you can see

  895. in our world today,

  896. you can see

  897. that God is angry

  898. with our world.

  899. You can see

  900. that the word

  901. it uses is wrath.

  902. You can see

  903. God's wrath

  904. in the world.

  905. God's wrath

  906. is revealed

  907. against the sinfulness

  908. and wickedness

  909. of our world.

  910. Where might you expect

  911. to see

  912. God's wrath revealed?

  913. Well,

  914. if you look

  915. at Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  916. you see it

  917. in the wickedness

  918. of the world.

  919. So three times

  920. in Romans 1,

  921. you get this repeated,

  922. the idea

  923. that God gives people

  924. over to their sinful desires.

  925. That's what he is doing

  926. in judgment

  927. to their sinful desires,

  928. handing them over

  929. to do what they want.

  930. So much so

  931. that the anger

  932. or wrath of God

  933. is seen

  934. in the sin

  935. that it leads to

  936. in the world.

  937. So Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1:28

  938. verse 28,

  939. says this.

  940. It's on the slide

  941. behind you,

  942. but you might want

  943. to turn to it

  944. because it's so important.

  945. It's page 1,129.

  946. 1,129.

  947. Romans chapter 1.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  948. Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1:28

  949. verse 28.

  950. Paul writes this.

  951. They are full of envy,

  952. murder, strife,

  953. deceit,

  954. and malice.

  955. They are gossips,

  956. slanderers,

  957. God-haters,

  958. insolent,

  959. arrogant,

  960. and boastful.

  961. They invent ways

  962. of doing evil.

  963. They disobey their parents.

  964. They have no understanding,

  965. no fidelity,

  966. no love,

  967. no mercy.

  968. Although they know

  969. God's righteous decree

  970. that those who do such things

  971. deserve death,

  972. they not only continue

  973. to do these very things,

  974. but also approve

  975. of those who practice them.

  976. It's shocking,

  977. isn't it?

  978. Why is our world

  979. so full of envy?

  980. Why is it that people

  981. in our world gossip?

  982. Why is it that children

  983. are disobedient

  984. to their parents?

  985. Why is it that people

  986. are heartless and ruthless?

  987. What is it that leads people

  988. to such terrible actions?

  989. Well,

  990. Romans chapter 1

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  991. is because God

  992. in his judgment

  993. has handed them over

  994. to their evil desires

  995. in judgment

  996. on their evil desires.

  997. Now,

  998. understanding this,

  999. that God judges wickedness

  1000. with more wickedness

  1001. should bring at least

  1002. two responses in us.

  1003. One,

  1004. I think,

1005. is that it should bring

  1006. a sense of consolation.

  1007. This idea

  1008. that God is sovereign

  1009. over the wickedness

  1010. of our world

  1011. brings great consolation

  1012. because you know

  1013. that there is nothing

  1014. in our world

  1015. that is outside

  1016. of God's control.

  1017. the spiraling wickedness

  1018. of our world,

  1019. the spiraling wickedness

1020. which you may have felt

  1021. personally,

  1022. is not outside

  1023. of God's control.

  1024. It's not a sign

  1025. of his absence.

  1026. Actually,

  1027. it's a sign

  1028. of his presence

  1029. and his involvement.

  1030. You're not to assume

  1031. just that because things

  1032. go disastrously wrong,

  1033. that must mean

  1034. that God's not there

  1035. or that he's forgotten.

1036. Nor are we to ever imagine

  1037. that people get away

  1038. with sin.

  1039. No,

  1040. God sees it all

  1041. and is navigating

  1042. this world

  1043. in such a way

  1044. that we see

  1045. the consequences

  1046. of sin

  1047. in a world

  1048. that was made good

  1049. but ruined

  1050. by our rebellion.

  1051. That doesn't always mean,

  1052. does it,

  1053. that it's proportional.

  1054. We're not to assume

1055. that it was the 70,000

  1056. worst people in Israel

1057. who died in the plague.

  1058. David,

1059. whose sin led to this,

  1060. remained alive.

1061. There is a final judgment

  1062. yet to come

  1063. for sin

  1064. when all of this

  1065. will be finally resolved

  1066. and yet still

  1067. sin breeds sin

  1068. under the judgment

1069. of God in his world

  1070. and no one escapes.

  1071. The second response though,

  1072. it should mean

  1073. that we realize

  1074. that the big problem

  1075. in our world

  1076. is that God

  1077. burns

  1078. with anger

  1079. at the sin

  1080. and wickedness

  1081. in our world.

  1082. God is not just,

  1083. I think sometimes

  1084. we imagine

  1085. that God might be

  1086. concerned with the injustices

  1087. that I'm concerned with

  1088. but not others.

  1089. But actually,

1090. the message of the Bible

1091. is that God is concerned

  1092. with all injustice

  1093. and all wickedness

  1094. including mine,

  1095. including yours.

1096. So that the moral God

  1097. who has left

  1098. his fingerprints

1099. all over you and me

  1100. has shown us

1101. so that just in the way

  1102. that we get outraged

  1103. by injustice

  1104. and wickedness,

  1105. so God is outraged

  1106. at all injustice

  1107. and all wickedness

  1108. in the world

  1109. including mine

  1110. and including yours.

1111. So that my big need,

  1112. your big need

  1113. is not so much

  1114. for comfort,

  1115. not so much

  1116. for a good night's rest,

  1117. not so much

  1118. for a refreshing holiday

  1119. in the Caribbean.

  1120. My great need,

  1121. your great need

  1122. in this world

  1123. of spiraling wickedness

  1124. is what?

  1125. Forgiveness,

  1126. reconciliation with God,

  1127. mercy,

  1128. grace,

  1129. a sacrifice for sin.

  1130. That's what I really need

  1131. because I live

  1132. in a world

  1133. of spiraling wickedness

  1134. under the judgment

  1135. of a just God

  1136. who sees it all

  1137. and knows it all.

1138. I think we can be

1139. even more clear on it

  1140. than just that,

  1141. though.

  1142. The point here

  1143. is that David

  1144. in 2 Samuel 24

  1145. gets to pursue

  1146. his desires.

  1147. You see that?

  1148. Verse 4,

  1149. chapter 24,

1150. it is the king's word

  1151. that overrules

1152. Joab and the army commanders.

  1153. David is getting

  1154. what he wants.

  1155. You know,

  1156. if you were

  1157. David's counselor

  1158. in 2 Samuel 24

  1159. in a kind of

  1160. modern day speak,

  1161. you'd sit down

  1162. with David

  1163. and you'd say,

  1164. listen David,

  1165. you do you.

  1166. You be who

  1167. you want to be.

1168. You are the only person

  1169. who can do you,

  1170. so you do it.

1171. You do what you want

  1172. to do, David.

  1173. Brilliant,

  1174. says David.

1175. I want to count the people.

  1176. Well, go ahead.

  1177. Count the people.

  1178. But actually,

1179. it is in the very process

  1180. of him doing

1181. what he wants to do

  1182. that he faces

  1183. the judgment of God

  1184. for his sin.

  1185. We assume,

  1186. don't we,

1187. that getting what we want,

  1188. doing what we want,

1189. is a sign of success

  1190. and blessing.

  1191. But in 2 Samuel 24,

  1192. getting what you want,

  1193. doing what he wants,

  1194. is a sign of God's judgment.

  1195. Have you considered

  1196. that perhaps

  1197. getting what you want

  1198. might not be

  1199. the road to glory,

  1200. but might be

  1201. the road to hell?

  1202. But if what you're

  1203. living for

  1204. is simply the desires

  1205. of your own heart,

  1206. and you're getting them,

  1207. have you considered

  1208. that that might not

  1209. be the blessing

1210. that you assume it is?

1211. Our lives were given to us

  1212. not to live for

  1213. our own desires,

  1214. but to live for

  1215. God's glory.

  1216. And if you're living

  1217. simply for yourself,

  1218. and you're being

  1219. successful in it,

  1220. it might not be

  1221. a sign of God's blessing,

  1222. it might just be

  1223. that you're getting

  1224. the judgment

1225. that God wants you to get.

  1226. That's the challenge

  1227. of 2 Samuel 24.

  1228. David does exactly

1229. what he wants to do,

  1230. but he does so

  1231. under the hand

  1232. of God's judgment.

  1233. Secondly though,

  1234. God's power over sin

  1235. not only means judgment,

  1236. it also means salvation.

  1237. God rules over sin

  1238. in salvation.

1239. This I think is perhaps

  1240. easier to miss

  1241. in the passage,

  1242. but this is where

  1243. it's leading to.

  1244. God's rule over David's sin

1245. in judgment on the sin

  1246. of the people

  1247. steers all these events.

1248. You see all of the events

  1249. of 2 Samuel 24

  1250. arrive at a particular

  1251. location,

  1252. and it might not

  1253. seem much to you,

  1254. it's the threshing floor

  1255. of Arunah the Jebusite.

1256. That's where you end up.

  1257. In fact,

  1258. when you read

  1259. the story aloud,

  1260. you notice that

  1261. Arunah's name

  1262. gets mentioned

  1263. an uncomfortably large

  1264. amount of times

  1265. in these end verses.

  1266. The NIV,

  1267. just to make it

  1268. slightly easier to read,

  1269. has missed out

  1270. a few of them

  1271. just because

  1272. it's so awkward.

  1273. It's a strange

  1274. sort of emphasis.

  1275. Arunah,

  1276. Arunah,

  1277. Arunah,

  1278. Arunah,

  1279. Arunah.

  1280. Do you know

  1281. where you are?

  1282. You're at the threshing

  1283. floor of Arunah,

  1284. Arunah the Jebusite.

  1285. Do you know

  1286. where you are?

  1287. You're at the threshing

1288. floor of Arunah the Jebusite.

  1289. Why that emphasis?

  1290. Well,

  1291. actually,

  1292. I think that would

  1293. have meant something

  1294. more to the people

  1295. of Israel

  1296. when they're reading it,

  1297. because this turns out

  1298. to be the site

  1299. of the temple

  1300. that gets built.

  1301. The point of this

  1302. is that David

  1303. ends up there

  1304. not with a sinful

  1305. desire to count

  1306. the people,

  1307. but with a desire

1308. to pay for the sin

  1309. of the people,

  1310. doesn't he?

  1311. He calls them sheep

  1312. in verse 17,

  1313. and he asks that

  1314. he as the shepherd

1315. might stand in their place.

  1316. Please judge me,

  1317. says David,

  1318. as shepherd,

  1319. may I stand

  1320. in the place

  1321. of the sheep

  1322. and face punishment

  1323. instead.

  1324. And Gad steps in

  1325. and says,

  1326. no,

  1327. build an altar here.

  1328. Again,

  1329. just think about

  1330. God's involvement.

  1331. David is following

  1332. God's lead

  1333. as he's instructed

  1334. by Gad,

  1335. and he builds

  1336. the altar,

  1337. which he pays

  1338. for himself,

  1339. and it leads

  1340. not just to

  1341. the salvation

  1342. of David

  1343. and the ending

  1344. of the plague,

  1345. but actually

  1346. it becomes

  1347. this great sign

  1348. of atonement

  1349. for years

  1350. and generations

  1351. to come

  1352. as the temple

  1353. is built there,

  1354. right up until

  1355. the age

  1356. of the New Testament.

  1357. So here,

  1358. God sovereignly

  1359. rules over

  1360. David's sin,

  1361. not just to

  1362. lead David

  1363. and the people

  1364. to judgment,

  1365. but actually

  1366. to lead

  1367. and steer

  1368. the people

  1369. to salvation

  1370. as well.

  1371. And not just

  1372. for the sin

  1373. of counting

  1374. the people,

  1375. but in the

  1376. ministry of

  1377. the temple

  1378. for generations

  1379. and generations

  1380. to come.

  1381. This is the

  1382. scene of

  1383. acted forgiveness

  1384. for generations.

  1385. Now,

  1386. of course,

  1387. what we're going

  1388. to find,

  1389. which we've been

  1390. finding over

  1391. and over again

  1392. in 2 Samuel,

  1393. is that David

  1394. is a picture

  1395. for us

  1396. of Jesus.

  1397. Now,

  1398. you know,

  1399. don't you,

  1400. that he's not

  1401. a perfect picture.

  1402. Jesus is not

  1403. proud.

  1404. He has no

  1405. sinful desire

  1406. to incite.

  1407. In fact,

  1408. in 2 Samuel 24,

  1409. for much of it,

  1410. David is the

  1411. opposite of

  1412. Jesus,

  1413. isn't he?

  1414. You see this,

  1415. don't you?

  1416. David's sin

  1417. leads to

  1418. judgment

  1419. on his people,

  1420. right?

  1421. That's the

  1422. opposite of

  1423. Jesus.

  1424. Jesus'

  1425. actions of

  1426. righteousness

  1427. lead to

  1428. life and

  1429. salvation

  1430. for his

  1431. people.

  1432. David is the

  1433. opposite in

  1434. much of this.

  1435. But you see,

  1436. don't you,

  1437. the echo of

  1438. Jesus in

  1439. verse 17,

  1440. where David

  1441. recognizes that

  1442. he,

  1443. as a king,

  1444. wants to be

  1445. representative for

  1446. his people,

  1447. that his death

  1448. might mean their

  1449. salvation.

  1450. Pointing forward

  1451. to Jesus.

  1452. And here at the

  1453. end,

  1454. the parallels are

  1455. so clear,

  1456. aren't they?

  1457. That the true

  1458. temple of God

  1459. is the Lord

  1460. Jesus Christ.

  1461. Standing in the

  1462. place of Arunah's

  1463. threshing floor

  1464. is the cross of

  1465. Jesus Christ.

  1466. As the great

  1467. shepherd of the

  1468. sheep stands in

  1469. the place of the

  1470. sheep,

  1471. the true

  1472. sacrifice for

  1473. sin,

  1474. not on an

  1475. altar,

  1476. but the cross.

  1477. And the parallels

  1478. are even clearer

  1479. than that only.

  1480. Think about what

  1481. happens at the

  1482. cross.

  1483. We were thinking

  1484. about this with

  1485. the kids.

  1486. The cross,

  1487. remember,

  1488. is the desire

  1489. of sinful men

  1490. and women.

  1491. Men and women

  1492. who have an

  1493. inexplicable hatred

  1494. for Jesus.

  1495. And they yell

  1496. for Jesus to be

  1497. killed,

  1498. don't they?

  1499. Despite the fact

  1500. they know Jesus

  1501. has done no

  1502. wrong.

  1503. Hard to think

  1504. of a more wicked

  1505. act than shouting

  1506. for the death of

  1507. the Son of God

  1508. in human flesh.

  1509. That's exactly

  1510. what the crowds

  1511. do,

  1512. don't they?

  1513. You know,

  1514. kill this man.

  1515. Oh,

  1516. he's had compassion

  1517. on the crowds

  1518. all of his

  1519. ministry,

  1520. yet they're

  1521. shouting,

  1522. kill him,

  1523. kill him.

  1524. He healed my

  1525. mum from a

  1526. disease.

  1527. Kill him

  1528. anyway.

  1529. I saw him

  1530. raised to death.

  1531. Kill him

  1532. anyway.

  1533. He fed

  1534. $5,000.

  1535. Crucify him.

  1536. Crucify him.

  1537. Now,

  1538. if you want

  1539. to know that

  1540. our sin problem

  1541. is its heart,

  1542. a hatred of God,

  1543. then look no

  1544. further than the

  1545. cross.

  1546. But still,

  1547. in all of that,

  1548. in God's

  1549. sovereign power

  1550. over the

  1551. sinfulness of

  1552. humanity,

  1553. what is God

  1554. doing?

  1555. He is

  1556. saving his

  1557. people.

  1558. He has a

  1559. plan to save.

  1560. So much so

  1561. that you could

  1562. say God

  1563. incites their

  1564. wicked cries

  1565. so that King

  1566. Jesus would

  1567. arrive at the

  1568. cross and

  1569. provide the

  1570. means for our

  1571. forgiveness in

  1572. his death on

  1573. our place.

  1574. In 2 Samuel,

  1575. all the roads

  1576. are leading,

  1577. aren't they,

  1578. to Arunah's

  1579. threshing floor,

  1580. to the place of

  1581. atonement.

  1582. Actually,

  1583. in the Bible,

  1584. all the roads

  1585. are leading to

  1586. the cross,

  1587. to the place

  1588. of forgiveness.

  1589. Now,

  1590. think about how

  1591. that applies

  1592. for us today.

  1593. I do think,

  1594. I'm no great

  1595. cultural commentator,

  1596. but I do think

  1597. there is a growing

  1598. sense of hopelessness,

  1599. isn't there,

  1600. in our world.

1601. We live at a time

  1602. where climate

  1603. change has now

  1604. become the

  1605. climate crisis

  1606. and it makes it

  1607. sound even worse,

  1608. doesn't it?

1609. We live at a time

  1610. when politicians

  1611. seem to think that

  1612. their job is basically

1613. just to tell us the

  1614. bad news all the

  1615. time.

1616. Let me tell you the

  1617. economy is in a

  1618. really terrible way,

  1619. they say.

1620. Let me tell you that

  1621. public services are

  1622. in a really terrible

  1623. way.

1624. Let me tell you the

  1625. bad news about the

  1626. NHS.

1627. Let me tell you the

  1628. bad news about

  1629. global politics.

  1630. Now that's not a

  1631. political comment,

  1632. everybody's doing

  1633. that, aren't they?

  1634. And it's easy I

  1635. think for us just

  1636. to be swept along

  1637. with this tide and

  1638. then there's a

  1639. sense of hopelessness

  1640. in the church as

  1641. well, isn't there?

1642. Oh look, we live in

  1643. a morally declining

  1644. nation, churches are

  1645. shrinking all the

  1646. time, they're getting

  1647. turned into box of

  1648. apartments.

  1649. Let me tell you,

  1650. it's terrible,

  1651. hopeless.

  1652. Think about the

  1653. loosening of Christian

  1654. values from public

  1655. life, we've seen

  1656. that this week,

  1657. haven't we?

  1658. But 2 Samuel 24

  1659. in its fulfillment

  1660. at the cross stands

  1661. there as a reminder

  1662. that the story of

1663. our world is not the

  1664. story of uncontrolled

  1665. sin and chaos.

  1666. The story of our

1667. world is the story of

1668. a God who longs to

  1669. save and is

  1670. orchestrating all

  1671. things for the

  1672. salvation of his

  1673. people at the cross

  1674. of Jesus Christ.

  1675. One who brings

  1676. judgment and holds

  1677. to account, who

  1678. brings forgiveness

  1679. and reconciliation even

1680. in the midst of sin

  1681. and wickedness.

1682. So that for you and

  1683. me this morning, and

1684. maybe this is for the

  1685. first time, my hope

1686. and my prayer is that

  1687. through this series in

  1688. 2 Samuel, you and I

  1689. might arrive at Arunah's

  1690. threshing floor.

  1691. Not Arunah's threshing

  1692. floor literally, but

  1693. its fulfillment in the

  1694. cross of Jesus Christ.

  1695. Have you been led

1696. there by the book of

1697. 2 Samuel to see that

1698. what you really need in

1699. life and in death is

  1700. the forgiveness that is

  1701. only provided by the

  1702. cross of Jesus Christ?

  1703. Will you see that?

  1704. Will you discover it

  1705. maybe even for the

  1706. first time that God

  1707. has been behind all

  1708. the events of your

  1709. life, leading you to

1710. turn from your sin and

  1711. to trust in him?

  1712. And if you're a

  1713. Christian this morning,

  1714. maybe that happened

  1715. years ago, well just

1716. be reminded by 2 Samuel

  1717. 24 that there is

1718. nothing in your life or

1719. your world that God is

  1720. not in charge of.

  1721. God will bring you

1722. home because he is in

1723. charge of all things and

  1724. you can trust him.

1725. God is the driver of the

1726. train of human history and

1727. you and I trusting in

1728. Christ get to be part of

1729. what he's doing for his

1730. glory and for our good.

  1731. Let me pray.

  1732. Let's just take a few

  1733. moments of quiet.

1734. Maybe you pray in your

  1735. own hearts, thanking God

1736. that he's in charge of

1737. your life and all that

  1738. happens.

  1739. Amen.

  1740. Amen.

  1741. Amen.

  1742. Amen.

  1743. Amen.

  1744. Amen.

  1745. Amen.

  1746. Amen.

  1747. Amen.

  1748. Amen.

  1749. Amen.

  1750. Amen.

  1751. Amen.

  1752. Amen.

  1753. Amen.

  1754. Amen.

  1755. Amen.

  1756. Amen.

  1757. Amen.

  1758. Amen.

  1759. Amen.

  1760. Amen.

  1761. Amen.

  1762. Amen.

  1763. Amen.

  1764. Amen.

  1765. Amen.

  1766. Amen.

  1767. Amen.

  1768. Amen.

  1769. Heavenly Father, how

1770. we thank you that you

  1771. are sovereign over all

  1772. things.

1773. Thank you that there is

1774. nothing in our world, good

1775. or bad, which threatens you

1776. and your plans and your

  1777. purposes.

  1778. Thank you that the

  1779. wickedness of our own

  1780. hearts and the wickedness

1781. of the hearts of those

1782. around us have only ever

  1783. been able to accomplish

  1784. your plans.

1785. And thank you that while

  1786. we don't see complete

1787. justice today in our world,

1788. there is a day coming

1789. when justice will be done,

1790. when every wrong will be

1791. put right, every evil will

  1792. be punished.

1793. And we recognize that day

  1794. involves and includes us.

1795. So we come trusting not in

  1796. ourselves but in Jesus

  1797. Christ.

1798. Thank you that he died in our

  1799. place for our forgiveness,

1800. that we might know you and

1801. love you and belong to you.

1802. Please we pray, give us great

1803. confidence and joy in you.

1804. In a hopeless world, help us

1805. to hold on to this great

1806. hope that you know what

1807. you're doing and that you

  1808. rule and reign.

  1809. In Jesus' name, amen.
