  1. Psalm 11 on page 548 in the Church Bibles.

  2. In the Lord I take refuge.

  3. How then can you say to me,

  4. flee like a bird to your mountain?

  5. For look, the wicked bend their bows.

  6. They set their arrows against the strings

  7. to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.

  8. When the foundations are being destroyed,

  9. what can the righteous do?

  10. The Lord is in his holy temple.

  11. The Lord is on his heavenly throne.

  12. He observes everyone on earth.

  13. His eyes examine them.

  14. The Lord examines the righteous,

  15. but the wicked, those who love violence.

  16. He hates with a passion.

  17. On the wicked, he will rain fiery coals

  18. and burning sulphur.

  19. A scorching wind will be their lot.

  20. For the Lord is righteous.

  21. He loves justice.

  22. The upright will see his face.

  23. What's our brother ready to come and give us our message?

  24. Thank you.

  25. If you'd like to keep your Bibles open to page 548.

  26. We're going to look at this psalm through together

  27. and it would be useful if you could look down to it as we go along.

  28. Let's pray first of all.

  29. I'm very conscious that we need God's help to,

  30. help me to be clear for one,

  31. and help us all, myself and yourselves,

  32. to understand and take to heart what God is saying to us today.

  33. So let's pray.

  34. Father, we thank you for your word.

  35. We thank you for the blessing it is to read it together.

  36. We thank you, Lord, for the great examples

  37. and teaching that you give us of how to live our Christian lives.

  38. So we do pray that you would speak to us now.

  39. You would enable me, Lord, to be clear.

  40. And, Lord, you would help us all to be obedient to your word.

  41. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  42. Here in Psalm 11, we've got two questions

  43. from two different sources.

  44. And each source asking that question

  45. is seeing exactly the same situation

  46. but drawing opposite conclusions.

  47. And each question reveals the questioner's heart.

  48. I don't know whether you caught that,

  49. so I'm going to read it again

  50. because it's quite dense.

  51. I know what I've just read to you.

  52. There are two questions

  53. from two different sources in this psalm.

  54. Each source, each person asking that question

  55. sees exactly the same situation

  56. but draws completely opposite conclusions.

  57. Each question that's asked,

  58. both questions that are asked,

  59. reveal the questioner's heart.

  60. Well, let's see if we can unpack a bit of that

  61. as we go through.

  62. The first question in this psalm

  63. is in verse 3,

  64. and it's a question posed by David's friends,

  65. his advisors,

  66. and it's this.

  67. When the foundations are being destroyed,

  68. what can the righteous do?

  69. So this psalm was written about 3,000 years ago.

  70. So in those times,

  71. God's people were asking that kind of question,

  72. and we still ask that question today,

  73. but we might phrase it in a different way.

  74. Today we might say something like,

  75. when biblical principles,

  76. which underpin our society,

  77. when they're thrown away,

  78. when they're forgotten,

  79. what hope is there?

  80. So whether it's politicians,

  81. or sadly church leaders,

  82. or society in general,

  83. when those principles

  84. of integrity, honesty, justice, fairness,

  85. are no longer the bedrock of their actions,

  86. what hope is there?

  87. Well, David answers that question,

  88. and I need to give you a bit of context here.

  89. So this is the title of the psalm,

  90. as I see it.

  91. It's basically what it's about.

  92. And we see that this question

  93. is being asked by David's friends.

  94. Notice, not his enemies,

  95. being asked by his friends.

  96. Why are they asking this question?

  97. Well, the situation that David finds himself in

  98. is that his enemies, in verse 2,

  99. are trying to destroy him.

  100. They're described as shooting Addo,

  101. shooting arrows from the shadows.

  102. So this is a,

  103. we're not told a specific encounter,

  104. but we know this is deadly opposition to David.

  105. His enemies are out to literally,

  106. physically destroy him,

  107. to kill him.

  108. His advisors then are telling him to give up,

  109. to run.

  110. And if you look down there at verses 1 to verse 3 in your Bibles,

  111. you'll see what they say is in speech marks.

  112. Can you see the speech marks there?

  113. So in short,

  114. what David's friends are saying to him is,

  115. run.

  116. There are people out to kill you.

  117. You cannot cope with this situation.

  118. All is lost.

  119. Run.

  120. And then they use this strange phrase,

  121. flee like a bird to your mountain.

  122. We could see this as saying something like this.

  123. As birds fly up to safer ground when they're frightened,

  124. so you should seek the safety of the mountains.

  125. Escape while you can.

  126. If you don't believe that's a fact,

  127. that birds are scared by sudden noises,

  128. then all the pigeons that sit on our roof,

  129. if you stand in the car park,

  130. and you make a car backfire,

  131. or perhaps you just drop something heavy,

  132. they all fly up,

  133. and they fly up to what they think is safer ground.

  134. Well, that's what David's friends are saying to him.

  135. So a question for you, okay?

  136. Assuming the situation was as bad as the advisors thought,

  137. was this good advice they were giving,

  138. or was it bad advice?

  139. Should he run?

  140. Should he hide?

  141. Or should he stand his ground against an enemy he couldn't combat?

  142. Well, from his advisor's point of view,

  143. and from what they could see,

  144. this was clearly good advice.

  145. And they try and convince David of this,

  146. in the words of this psalm.

  147. In verse 2, they say,

  148. can you see these words?

  149. They say,

  150. for look.

  151. In other words,

  152. look at the situation you are in.

  153. But David could see that,

  154. rather than being good advice,

  155. this looking was the root of their problem.

  156. They were judging the situation by just what they could see,

  157. and no more.

  158. So what was David's response?

  159. His response here is the second question in the psalm,

  160. was,

  161. how can you say this?

  162. He says there in verse 1,

  163. In the Lord I take refuge.

  164. How then can you say to me,

  165. flee like a bird to your mountain?

  166. I'm taking refuge in the Lord,

  167. says David,

  168. therefore I need not worry or fear.

  169. David's response is what,

  170. a similar response to what we read in 2 Corinthians 5, 7,

  171. where it talks about the Christian,

  172. God's person,

  173. living by faith,

  174. not by sight.

  175. I was reading two chronicles in my Bible readings yesterday,

  176. and I came across a really interesting verse,

  177. which is very similar here to what the situation David faced.

  178. But this is King Hezekiah years earlier,

  179. sorry,

  180. years after this,

  181. saying a similar thing,

  182. when the hordes of the Assyrian army were closing in on Jerusalem,

  183. and again,

  184. they were completely outnumbered by the Assyrians,

  185. and people no doubt would have said to Hezekiah,

  186. all is lost.

  187. But Hezekiah said this,

  188. I'll read them to you if you want to look them up,

  189. you can on page 465,

  190. but I'll read this to you.

  191. Be strong and courageous.

  192. This is what Hezekiah is saying to his people.

  193. Be strong and courageous.

  194. Do not be afraid or discouraged,

  195. because the king of Assyria and the vast army with him,

  196. for there is a greater power with us.

  197. Literally,

  198. greater power than us is,

  199. there are more with us.

  200. For there is more with us than with him.

  201. With him is only the arm of flesh,

  202. but with us is the Lord our God,

  203. to help us and to fight our battles.

  204. So those words there,

  205. with him is only the arm of flesh,

  206. but with us is the Lord our God.

  207. That changes the dynamic,

  208. that changes the situation entirely.

  209. David's version of this,

  210. of what Hezekiah said is,

  211. the Lord is my refuge,

  212. why should I fear?

  213. And David spells out there in verses 4 to 7,

  214. why he is not afraid,

  215. why he doesn't think he should fear.

  216. In verse 4,

  217. he says that God is reigning in heaven,

  218. that he sees all.

  219. And in verses 4 and 5,

  220. he sees the righteous and the wicked.

  221. So he sees the situation.

  222. Verse 6,

  223. he will judge the wicked.

  224. And verse 7,

  225. he brings justice to the righteous.

  226. We know that because he says,

  227. they will see his face.

  228. He doesn't say to his friends,

  229. what you are seeing is wrong.

  230. You must change your glasses,

  231. if they had glasses in those days.

  232. What you are seeing is wrong.

  233. No, he can't say that,

  234. because what they are seeing is true.

  235. He can't say,

  236. you are understanding this wrong.

  237. No one is really out to get me,

  238. because they could see it with their eyes.

  239. But he does say,

  240. God is bigger than this situation.

  241. The Lord is in control.

  242. He sees all that is going on.

  243. And he will deliver the righteous.

  244. And he will judge the wicked.

  245. It's not just that he realises

  246. that God is in control

  247. and he need not fear.

  248. But there's another element to this.

  249. He refuses to run

  250. and therefore be deflected

  251. from what purposes God had for him.

  252. whatever the opposition is

  253. he was going to face.

  254. So what does this psalm

  255. have to say to us today?

  256. We see from the title,

  257. if you look back at your Bibles there,

  258. just above verse one,

  259. you see the title

  260. for the director of music of David,

  261. that this was a song,

  262. this was written as a song,

  263. and it's a song to be sung,

  264. sent to the director of music.

  265. And this psalm,

  266. as well as other psalms,

  267. was to be sung

  268. by all of God's people.

  269. This psalm was in the

  270. Israelites' songbook,

  271. if you like.

  272. They used it in worship.

  273. And why was it so important?

  274. Why was it put here in Scripture,

  275. not just for the Israelites to sing,

  276. but for us to reflect on today?

  277. Well, I think there are two truths here,

  278. which is important for believers

  279. of any generation,

  280. for every one of us sitting here this morning.

  281. The first is that whatever our circumstances

  282. look like,

  283. God is fully in control,

  284. so we can fully trust him.

  285. The second thing,

  286. as David was seeing,

  287. we must not be deflected

  288. from God's purposes for us.

  289. We're going to look at these

  290. a little bit closer,

  291. just these two points here.

  292. God is in control.

  293. In particular,

  294. God's control is shown

  295. by verses four to seven.

  296. The fact that he sees,

  297. and he doesn't just see,

  298. but he has the power,

  299. and the will,

  300. and the purpose to act.

  301. We're told that he sees the righteous,

  302. and will save them.

  303. He sees the wicked,

  304. and will judge them.

  305. So,

  306. take time to think right now

  307. that God

  308. sees

  309. and understands

  310. you completely

  311. this morning.

  312. He sees

  313. maybe your anxiety

  314. about your

  315. present situation,

  316. about work,

  317. family problems,

  318. financial hardships.

  319. Maybe you have

  320. housing issues,

  321. or maybe you suffer

  322. with poor health.

  323. Well,

  324. God sees those things,

  325. and according to this psalm,

  326. he will save you.

  327. Though he may not

  328. take the issue away,

  329. his promise

  330. is to be with you

  331. through it,

  332. and to be

  333. your refuge,

  334. as he was to David.

  335. This word refuge

  336. comes repeatedly

  337. through the psalms.

  338. I wouldn't do

  339. a count of it.

  340. I'd need more fingers

  341. than I could

  342. count on.

  343. It comes time and time again

  344. in the psalms,

  345. this idea of

  346. God being our refuge.

  347. And it's describing

  348. a place

  349. of safety.

  350. If you've trusted

  351. Christ,

  352. then you are

  353. in the safest place

  354. you can possibly be.

  355. You're in his shelter.

  356. You're under

  357. his protection.

  358. A story

  359. in Genesis chapter 6,

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  360. it's the truth,

  361. it's history,

  362. is Noah's Ark,

  363. where Noah,

  364. you remember

  365. from your Sunday school days,

  366. brought the animals

  367. into the ark.

  368. And

  369. this is an illustration

  370. here,

  371. the ark is an illustration

  372. of what David's

  373. saying,

  374. that in the Lord

  375. he takes refuge.

  376. If you've taken

  377. refuge in God,

  378. you're safe

  379. no matter what

  380. floods,

  381. what trials

  382. you may face.

  383. He faces them

  384. with you.

  385. But if you haven't

  386. taken refuge in Christ,

  387. not only

  388. do you have

  389. to face

  390. life's trials

  391. alone,

  392. but you also

  393. have to face

  394. God's judgment

  395. alone.

  396. But God

  397. has provided

  398. a way

  399. that we can

  400. take refuge

  401. in him.

  402. So God

  403. sees his people,

  404. but God

  405. also sees

  406. those

  407. who are wicked.

  408. In this psalm,

  409. they're described

  410. as those

  411. who love

  412. violence.

  413. That's how

  414. they're typified

  415. there in verse 5.

  416. But the word

  417. wicked

  418. also describes

  419. those who are

  420. quite content

  421. to live their

  422. lives with

  423. little reference

  424. to God

  425. or with no

  426. reference to God.

  427. Those of us

  428. who insist

  429. on living

  430. apart from him.

  431. The warning

  432. to us today

  433. and the fearful

  434. thing is that

  435. God will grant

  436. those people

  437. the desire

  438. of their heart,

  439. but they will

  440. come under

  441. his judgment

  442. as we read

  443. there in

  444. verse 6.

  445. God is in

  446. control.

  447. God is bigger

  448. than our

  449. situation.

  450. He sees

  451. and he acts

  452. to save the

  453. believer

  454. and judge

  455. the unbeliever.

  456. God is bigger

  457. than our

  458. God.

  459. The next thing

  460. that I think

  461. this psalm mainly

  462. says to us is,

  463. don't be deflected

  464. from the purposes

  465. God has for you.

  466. I'll take you back

  467. now to another

  468. Old Testament story,

  469. the story of Jonah.

  470. God had a mission

  471. for him,

  472. didn't he?

  473. Do you remember

  474. what that was?

  475. It was the preach

  476. to the people

  477. of Nineveh.

  478. Jonah.

  479. But instead,

  480. he ran away

  481. to Tarshish

  482. in the opposite

  483. direction.

  484. He did the opposite

  485. to what David

  486. was doing.

  487. David would not

  488. let his circumstances

  489. or those around

  490. him deflect him

  491. from God's

  492. purpose,

  493. but Jonah

  494. did.

  495. David's purpose

  496. here was to

  497. be king

  498. and to lead

  499. his people.

  500. We've been seeing

  501. that through

  502. 2 Samuel,

  503. haven't we?

  504. David was God's

  505. anointed.

  506. It was God's

  507. purpose for him

  508. to be a good

  509. king,

  510. to lead his

  511. people.

  512. How can he do

  513. this if he runs

  514. away?

  515. So it's important

  516. that he stands

  517. his ground

  518. and he fulfills

  519. God's purpose

  520. for him.

  521. But for us

  522. sitting here

  523. or standing

  524. here this morning,

  525. what is God's

  526. purpose for us?

  527. What does God

  528. call us to?

  529. Well,

  530. personally,

  531. what has God

  532. called you to?

  533. Maybe you

  534. haven't thought

  535. of this in

  536. quite those terms

  537. that God

  538. has a purpose

  539. for you.

  540. But he does

  541. and he has

  542. called you

  543. to be faithful

  544. to that.

  545. Now,

  546. if you're not

  547. a Christian

  548. this morning,

  549. the Bible

  550. says that the

  551. first thing

  552. that God

  553. calls you

  554. to is

  555. repentance

  556. so that you

  557. may know

  558. his forgiveness

  559. and that you

  560. may come

  561. into his

  562. family.

  563. Jesus said

  564. in Mark

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  565. chapter 1,

  566. the time

  567. has come,

  568. the kingdom

  569. of God

  570. has come

  571. near,

  572. repent

  573. and believe

  574. the good

  575. news.

  576. That's

  577. everyone's

  578. starting point.

  579. It's my

  580. starting point

  581. when I was

  582. a kid of

  583. 13,

  584. and God,

  585. I opened

  586. my eyes

  587. to this.

  588. We need

  589. to repent

  590. and put

  591. ourselves

  592. right with

  593. God.

  594. But if you

  595. are a

  596. Christian,

  597. I wonder

  598. what you

  599. think God

  600. has called

  601. you too.

  602. There are

  603. generally

  604. things that

  605. God has

  606. called us

  607. to.

  608. Matthew 5

  609. tells us

  610. that we're

  611. to shine

  612. as lights,

  613. we're to

  614. live a good

  615. life so that

  616. God is

  617. glorified.

  618. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 2 chapter mention

  619. chapter 2

  620. tells us

  621. that if

  622. we're a

  623. Christian,

  624. we're to

  625. be the

  626. aroma of

  627. Christ to

  628. those around

  629. us.

  630. Or chapter

  631. 5 of 2

  632. Corinthians,

  633. we're to

  634. be reconcilers,

  635. to call

  636. other people

  637. to be

  638. reconciled

  639. to God.

  640. But in

  641. Psalm 11,

  642. I think

  643. what God

  644. is primarily

  645. calling us

  646. to is

  647. to persevere,

  648. to endure,

  649. to keep

  650. the faith,

  651. not to

  652. give up.

  653. If you

  654. have your

  655. Bibles,

  656. if you'd

  657. like to

  658. turn to

  659. page

  660. 1180,

  661. you'll

  662. find that

  663. that's

  664. Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  665. chapter 3

  666. and there's

  667. four verses

  668. there that

  669. I'd like

  670. us to

  671. read.

  672. I'll read

  673. it to

  674. you.

  675. And this

  676. is key

  677. to this

  678. idea of

  679. endurance,

  680. perseverance.

  681. Philippians

    Philippians 3:12

  682. chapter 3

  683. verse 12

  684. and this

  685. is the

  686. apostle Paul

  687. speaking.

  688. verse 13

  689. verse 13

  690. I press

  691. on to

  692. take hold

  693. of that

  694. for which

  695. Christ

  696. Jesus

  697. took hold

  698. of me.

  699. Brothers

  700. and sisters,

  701. I do not

  702. consider myself

  703. yet to have

  704. taken hold

  705. of it,

  706. but one

  707. thing I do,

  708. forgetting what

  709. is behind

  710. and straining

  711. forward to

  712. what is

  713. ahead,

  714. I press

  715. on toward

  716. the goal

  717. to win

  718. the prize

  719. for which

  720. God has

  721. called me

  722. heavenward

  723. in Christ

  724. Jesus.

  725. So what's

  726. the goal

  727. that Paul

  728. is talking

  729. about here

  730. in Philippians

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  731. chapter 3?

  732. Well the

  733. earlier part

  734. of the

  735. chapter,

  736. Paul describes

  737. it as

  738. knowing Christ

  739. better and

  740. better in

  741. this life.

  742. That was

  743. his goal,

  744. that was

  745. his aim,

  746. that was

  747. his great

  748. purpose.

  749. So even

  750. more than

  751. being the

  752. great apostle

  753. that he

  754. was and

  755. preaching to

  756. the Gentiles,

  757. his greatest

  758. goal was to

  759. know Christ

  760. better.

  761. Now if

  762. anyone knew

  763. Christ,

  764. you would

  765. think it

  766. was the

  767. apostle Paul.

  768. Jesus had

  769. revealed himself

  770. to him on

  771. the road to

  772. Damascus,

  773. as we know,

  774. and he was

  775. the foremost

  776. of the

  777. apostles as

  778. we see him

  779. now.

  780. But his

  781. goal,

  782. he wasn't

  783. satisfied

  784. until he

  785. could know

  786. Christ

  787. better and

  788. better.

  789. I wonder

  790. whether that

  791. is our

  792. goal this

  793. morning.

  794. What is

  795. this heavenly

  796. prize Paul

  797. is looking

  798. forward to

  799. in Philippians

  800. 3?

  801. Well it's

  802. Christ.

  803. There's no

  804. other,

  805. more than

  806. wanting the

  807. goal of

  808. heaven,

  809. more than

  810. wanting

  811. anything he

  812. could hope

  813. for.

  814. It was to

  815. have Christ,

  816. to see

  817. him face

  818. to face.

  819. David says

  820. a similar

  821. thing at

  822. the end

  823. of Psalm

    Psalms 11:7

  824. 11,

  825. verse 7.

  826. He says,

  827. for the

  828. Lord is

  829. righteous,

  830. he loves

  831. justice,

  832. the upright

  833. will see

  834. his face.

  835. death.

  836. So if

  837. Jesus is

  838. the centre

  839. of all

  840. this,

  841. we ask

  842. ourselves

  843. a question,

  844. how was

  845. Jesus the

  846. fulfilment

  847. of this

  848. psalm?

  849. We've seen

  850. in the

  851. psalm that

  852. God saves

  853. his people

  854. and he

  855. brings

  856. judgment

  857. on the

  858. wicked.

  859. When we

  860. look at

  861. the death

  862. and the

  863. resurrection

  864. of Jesus,

  865. we see

  866. there both

  867. God saving

  868. people and

  869. God bringing

  870. his judgment.

  871. This time,

  872. not on the

  873. wicked,

  874. but on the

  875. perfect son

  876. of God.

  877. You're

  878. probably

  879. familiar with

  880. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 53:5

  881. 53,

  882. verse 5

  883. says this,

  884. he was

  885. pierced for

  886. our transgressions,

  887. he was

  888. crushed for

  889. our iniquities,

  890. the punishment

  891. that brought

  892. us peace

  893. was on

  894. him,

  895. and by

  896. his wounds

  897. we are

  898. healed.

  899. So the

  900. cross wasn't

  901. a dreadful

  902. accident,

  903. it wasn't

  904. that Jesus

  905. couldn't help

  906. himself,

  907. but as he

  908. was hanging

  909. there on

  910. the cross,

  911. he was in

  912. our place,

  913. bearing the

  914. judgment of

  915. God on

  916. our sin,

  917. so that

  918. we can be

  919. forgiven and

  920. saved from

  921. the judgment

  922. that we

  923. deserve

  924. ourselves.

  925. So his

  926. death and

  927. resurrection

  928. shows us

  929. the salvation

  930. and the

  931. judgment of

  932. God,

  933. both at the

  934. same time.

  935. But secondly,

  936. Jesus is the

  937. fulfillment of

  938. this psalm

  939. because we

  940. see in

  941. Jesus the

  942. perfect example

  943. of one who

  944. would not be

  945. deflected from

  946. God's purpose

  947. for him,

  948. his father's

  949. calling on

  950. his life.

  951. And we

  952. see what

  953. that was

  954. exactly in

  955. Matthew

    Matthew 20:28

  956. chapter 20

  957. verse 28,

  958. the son of

  959. man did

  960. not come to

  961. be served,

  962. but to

  963. serve and

  964. to give his

  965. life as a

  966. ransom for

  967. many.

  968. That was

  969. Christ's

  970. calling,

  971. man,

  972. that was

  973. to do

  974. his father's

  975. will and

  976. to give

  977. his life

  978. a ransom

  979. for many.

  980. And we

  981. see in

  982. the life

  983. of Jesus

  984. that he

  985. was tempted

  986. and he

  987. suffered far

  988. more than

  989. we are

  990. to give

  991. up.

  992. It's

  993. strange to

  994. think that

  995. in a way,

  996. isn't it?

  997. Because Jesus

  998. the perfect

  999. God-man,

  1000. we know

  1001. he was

  1002. tempted,

  1003. but he

  1004. was also

  1005. tempted to

  1006. give up

  1007. the cross.

  1008. When the

  1009. devil tempted

  1010. him in

  1011. Matthew

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  1012. chapter 4,

  1013. he was

  1014. given three

  1015. temptations,

  1016. wasn't he?

  1017. The first

  1018. was to

  1019. turn stone

  1020. into bread,

  1021. but all

  1022. three

  1023. temptations

  1024. was temptation

  1025. to go

  1026. against what

  1027. God wanted

  1028. for him.

  1029. And therefore

  1030. to sin.

  1031. If Jesus

  1032. had sinned,

  1033. his substitution

  1034. on the cross

  1035. would be no

  1036. use for us

  1037. because he

  1038. wouldn't be

  1039. the perfect

  1040. man.

  1041. So the

  1042. devil tried

  1043. to deflect

  1044. him from

  1045. this by

  1046. making him

  1047. sin,

  1048. but he

  1049. would not

  1050. yield to

  1051. those

  1052. temptations.

  1053. The temptation

  1054. to jump

  1055. off the

  1056. temple roof.

  1057. What would

  1058. have happened

  1059. if Jesus

  1060. would have

  1061. said,

  1062. well,

  1063. sure,

  1064. I will

  1065. be safe,

  1066. let me

  1067. just do

  1068. this one

  1069. thing.

  1070. What would

  1071. have happened

  1072. if he had

  1073. done that?

  1074. Well,

  1075. he probably

  1076. would have

  1077. had the

  1078. adulation

  1079. of the

  1080. crowd.

  1081. He would

  1082. have been

  1083. put forward

  1084. as some

  1085. kind of

  1086. the true

  1087. Messiah,

  1088. the true

  1089. one sent

  1090. from God.

  1091. Of course

  1092. he was,

  1093. but he

  1094. wouldn't have

  1095. been allowed

  1096. to go to

  1097. the cross.

  1098. He wouldn't

  1099. have suffered

  1100. in our

  1101. place.

  1102. So

  1103. throughout

  1104. Jesus'

  1105. life,

  1106. there were

  1107. things that

  1108. would throw

  1109. him off

  1110. his mission

  1111. to the

  1112. cross.

  1113. Even his

  1114. close friend

  1115. and disciple

  1116. Peter,

  1117. Matthew

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  1118. chapter 16,

  1119. when Jesus

  1120. told him

  1121. that he

  1122. was going

  1123. to suffer

  1124. and be

  1125. killed,

  1126. what did

  1127. Peter say?

  1128. Never,

  1129. Lord,

  1130. this shall

  1131. never happen

  1132. to you.

  1133. Do you

  1134. remember

  1135. what Jesus

  1136. said to

  1137. Peter?

  1138. Get behind

  1139. me,

  1140. Satan,

  1141. you are a

  1142. stumbling

  1143. block to

  1144. me.

  1145. Peter was

  1146. a stumbling

  1147. block because

  1148. he was

  1149. inadvertently,

  1150. he didn't

  1151. really understand

  1152. the full

  1153. impact of

  1154. this,

  1155. but he

  1156. was distracting

  1157. Jesus,

  1158. he was

  1159. deflecting

  1160. him off

  1161. of God's

  1162. path for

  1163. him.

  1164. Jesus had

  1165. to go

  1166. through to

  1167. the cross.

  1168. Luke 9

  1169. 51,

  1170. and this

  1171. is the

  1172. last verse

  1173. in this

  1174. section,

  1175. and we're

  1176. coming to

  1177. a close

  1178. now.

  1179. We read

  1180. this,

  1181. as the

  1182. time approached

  1183. for him

  1184. to be

  1185. taken up

  1186. to heaven,

  1187. Jesus

  1188. resolutely

  1189. set out

  1190. for Jerusalem.

  1191. So when

  1192. he knew

  1193. his death

  1194. was imminent,

  1195. he didn't

  1196. run,

  1197. he set

  1198. out to

  1199. the place

  1200. of his

  1201. execution.

  1202. Why was

  1203. he resolute?

  1204. Why would

  1205. he not be

  1206. deflected?

  1207. Well,

  1208. because he

  1209. was doing

  1210. his father's

  1211. will,

  1212. and in

  1213. doing that

  1214. he could

  1215. bear the

  1216. judgment

  1217. that the

  1218. wicked

  1219. deserve,

  1220. as it's

  1221. set out

  1222. there in

  1223. verse 6

  1224. of Psalm

  1225. 11.

  1226. So just

  1227. in conclusion

  1228. now,

  1229. God sees

  1230. and understands

  1231. whatever

  1232. difficulties

  1233. we're

  1234. facing,

  1235. whatever

  1236. difficulties

  1237. you're

  1238. facing

  1239. at the

  1240. moment,

  1241. and he

  1242. also sees

  1243. those

  1244. difficulties

  1245. that you

  1246. can't see

  1247. that are

  1248. going to

  1249. happen to

  1250. us in

  1251. 2025.

  1252. But as

  1253. we step

  1254. into that

  1255. new year

  1256. very soon,

  1257. let's

  1258. remember

  1259. that everything

  1260. is in

  1261. his care

  1262. and under

  1263. his control.

  1264. No matter

  1265. how frightening

  1266. it may seem

  1267. to us,

  1268. no matter

  1269. how out

  1270. of control

  1271. we may

  1272. seem,

  1273. everything

  1274. is under

  1275. his care

  1276. and under

  1277. his control.

  1278. We need

  1279. not fear.

  1280. walk that

  1281. road with

  1282. Christ,

  1283. press on

  1284. to trust

  1285. him more

  1286. and more

  1287. and to

  1288. know him

  1289. better.

  1290. In other

  1291. words,

  1292. persevere.

  1293. if you

  1294. have your

  1295. Bibles,

  1296. the last

  1297. reading we're

  1298. going to

  1299. have is

  1300. on page

  1301. 1210,

  1302. 1210.

  1303. It's

  1304. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1305. chapter 12

  1306. and I'm

  1307. just going

  1308. to read

  1309. to you

  1310. two verses

  1311. and the

  1312. reason we're

  1313. closing with

  1314. this is

  1315. because it

  1316. speaks of

  1317. perseverance

  1318. on the

  1319. journey

  1320. and it

  1321. tells us

  1322. that our

  1323. encouragement

  1324. won't be

  1325. from things

  1326. going well

  1327. for us

  1328. but our

  1329. encouragement

  1330. will be

  1331. from looking

  1332. to Christ.

  1333. Verse 1

  1334. Hebrews 12

  1335. Therefore,

  1336. since we are

  1337. surrounded by

  1338. such a great

  1339. cloud of

  1340. witnesses,

  1341. let us

  1342. throw off

  1343. everything

  1344. that hinders

  1345. and the

  1346. sin so

  1347. easily

  1348. entangles

  1349. and let us

  1350. run with

  1351. perseverance

  1352. the race

  1353. marked out

  1354. for us.

  1355. Fixing

  1356. our eyes

  1357. on Jesus

  1358. the pioneer

  1359. and perfecter

  1360. of faith

  1361. for the joy

  1362. set before

  1363. him

  1364. he endured

  1365. the cross

  1366. scorning

  1367. in shame

  1368. and sat

  1369. down at the
