  1. So, we're starting a short series looking at the mission of the church and the values of our church.

  2. And I'm going to do some of them, David's going to do some of them as well.

  3. And we're thinking tonight about what the church is for, right?

  4. So, what does the church exist for?

  5. And then in coming weeks we're sort of thinking about what should the church be like, okay?

  6. So, what is the church for?

  7. And then what should it be like?

  8. So, that's the kind of vision and these are the kind of values, yeah?

  9. So, what are we doing and how are we doing it?

  10. In what kind of manner are we doing it?

  11. So, to get your mind going, I want you, perhaps with the person next to you,

  12. or you can do it on your own if you would like to, I want you to fill in the blank.

  13. The church exists to...

  14. Fill in the blank.

  15. You can write whatever you like, except make me rich.

  16. You're not allowed to write that.

  17. Okay, anything you like.

  18. Okay, does anyone want to fire back their answers?

  19. The church exists to...

  20. All I heard was...

  21. Mike's got his hand up.

  22. Yeah, that's the...

  23. What is it, too, with both the people,

  24. Yeah.

  25. Yeah.

  26. Okay.

  27. So it's a demonstration of what God can do.

  28. Yeah.

  29. Yeah.

  30. Yes.

  31. Displaying his presence.

  32. Yeah.

  33. Yeah.

  34. Anybody else?

  35. Yes.

  36. Yeah.

  37. To glorify God.

  38. Yeah.

  39. Yeah.

  40. How in particular does the church glorify God?

  41. What is it about the church that glorifies God?

  42. Spreads the word of God?

  43. Yeah.

  44. Yeah.

  45. Yeah.

  46. By building a community?

  47. Yeah.

  48. Yeah.

  49. And it's like전

  50. yeah

  51. yes

  52. yeah

  53. yes

  54. yes

  55. so glorifying is if you like

  56. going public on the greatness

  57. of isn't it

  58. so if I'm glorifying God

  59. I am declaring

  60. his greatness

  61. I am

  62. yeah

  63. going public on what God is like

  64. yeah

  65. yeah

  66. anybody else

  67. yeah

  68. yeah

  69. yeah

  70. yeah

  71. discipling

  72. baptizing

  73. reaching unbelievers

  74. with the gospel

  75. yeah

  76. um

  77. I don't

  78. I don't think I've heard

  79. a wrong answer yet

  80. right

  81. so I'm

  82. I think that's all great

  83. I think I

  84. to try and

  85. bring some clarity

  86. to our thinking

  87. I want to talk about

  88. a primary goal

  89. a primary means

  90. and two twin aims

  91. okay

  92. and

  93. your handout really

  94. is the Bible verses

  95. so that you don't have to spend

  96. ages flicking through the Bible

  97. and there are some questions

  98. that we're going to discuss together as well

  99. so let me try and head through this

  100. a primary goal

  101. I think

  102. that it might sound a bit obvious

  103. and Mike said it

  104. and Ray also picked it up

  105. that the church exists

  106. for the glory of God

  107. in the way that everything

  108. exists for the glory of God

  109. everything points to the glory of God

  110. but

  111. the church exists

  112. to worship God

  113. right

  114. to ascribe worth

  115. to God

  116. to declare his

  117. greatness

  118. and his glory

  119. and we need to start there

  120. I think

  121. because

  122. this if you like

  123. is the goal

  124. to which all other things

  125. become subordinate

  126. glorifying God

  127. making God look great

  128. ascribing worth to him

  129. is the reason

  130. for the existence

  131. of the church

  132. that the Westminster Confession says

  133. what is the chief end of man

  134. man exists

  135. to glorify God

  136. and enjoy him forever

  137. and that's

  138. essentially trying to

  139. summarize passages

  140. like Romans 11

  141. which is there

  142. in front of you

  143. Romans 11

  144. is that

  145. great hymn

  146. that Paul comes to

  147. at the end of his

  148. kind of overview

  149. of the gospel

  150. and then he

  151. he summarizes it

  152. by saying this

  153. oh the depth

  154. of the riches

  155. of the wisdom

  156. and knowledge of God

  157. how unsearchable

  158. his judgments

  159. and his paths

  160. beyond tracing out

  161. who has known

  162. the mind of the Lord

  163. or who has been

  164. his counselor

  165. who has ever given

  166. to God

  167. that God should repay him

  168. for from him

  169. and through him

  170. and for him

  171. are all things

  172. to him be the glory

  173. forever

  174. everything comes

  175. from him

  176. is existing

  177. through him

  178. and for him

  179. and the church

  180. is part of that

  181. isn't it

  182. there to bring

  183. glory to God

  184. but if that's true

  185. of all things

  186. in general

  187. it is true

  188. even more

  189. specifically

  190. for the church

  191. not just the church

  192. in general

  193. but for a local church

  194. Ephesians 3

    Ephesians 3:7

  195. verse 7

  196. down to verse 11

  197. says this

  198. Paul writes

  199. I became a servant

  200. of this gospel

  201. by the gift

  202. of God's grace

  203. given me

  204. through the working

  205. of his power

  206. although I am less

  207. than the least

  208. of all the Lord's people

  209. this grace was given

  210. to me

  211. to preach to the Gentiles

  212. the boundless riches

  213. of Christ

  214. and to make plain

  215. to everyone

  216. the administration

  217. of this mystery

  218. which for ages past

  219. was kept hidden

  220. in God

  221. who created all things

  222. this is his

  223. mission

  224. to declare the gospel

  225. around the nations

  226. to reveal

  227. what had been

  228. kept hidden

  229. which has now

  230. been made plain

  231. in the Lord Jesus Christ

  232. his intent

  233. verse 10

  234. was that now

  235. through the church

  236. the manifold wisdom

  237. of God

  238. should be made

  239. known to the rulers

  240. and authorities

  241. in the heavenly realms

  242. !

  243. According to his

  244. eternal purpose

  245. that he accomplished

  246. in Christ Jesus

  247. our Lord

  248. this is the purpose

  249. of God in the church

  250. yeah

  251. that his intent

  252. was that through

  253. the church

  254. the manifold wisdom

  255. of God

  256. should be made known

  257. to the rulers

  258. and authorities

  259. in the heavenly realms

  260. there is a kind of

  261. declaration

  262. of the glory

  263. and majesty

  264. and worthiness

  265. of God

  266. in the existence

  267. of the church

  268. specifically it seems

  269. the existence

  270. of the church

  271. made up of people

  272. from all nations

  273. which declares

  274. God's greatness

  275. his manifold wisdom

  276. in other words

  277. if you were to

  278. go for a walk

  279. in the countryside

  280. and to see a kind

  281. of view

  282. of a great mountain

  283. you would like

  284. think wow

  285. I wonder

  286. who made that

  287. God made that

  288. he must be

  289. amazing

  290. and glorious

  291. look what a great

  292. painter he is

  293. what a great

  294. craftsman he is

  295. in making that

  296. you are also then

  297. in a more profound

  298. way to look

  299. at a community

  300. of believers

  301. and say

  302. what kind of God

  303. has pulled

  304. them together

  305. and rescued them

  306. that God

  307. is a worthy

  308. God

  309. a God of glory

  310. a God we should

  311. praise

  312. I think there's

  313. another way

  314. to prove this

  315. too

  316. it's because

  317. the eternal

  318. purpose of the church

  319. long after we have

  320. finished discipling

  321. and evangelizing

  322. people

  323. the eternal

  324. purpose of the church

  325. is that we would

  326. go on

  327. worshipping

  328. and declaring

  329. God's glory

  330. and greatness

  331. Revelation 5

  332. that picture

  333. of John's

  334. vision of heaven

  335. he says

  336. worthy is the

  337. lamb who was

  338. slain

  339. this is the song

  340. of heaven

  341. worthy is the

  342. lamb who was

  343. slain to receive

  344. power and wealth

  345. and wisdom

  346. and strength

  347. and honour

  348. and glory

  349. and praise

  350. then I heard

  351. every creature

  352. in heaven

  353. and on earth

  354. and under the

  355. earth

  356. and on the

  357. sea

  358. and all that

  359. is in them

  360. saying to him

  361. who sits on the

  362. throne

  363. and to the

  364. lamb be praise

  365. and honour

  366. and glory

  367. and power

  368. forever and

  369. ever

  370. and the four

  371. living creatures

  372. said amen

  373. and the elders

  374. fell down

  375. and worshipped

  376. the song

  377. will

  378. sorry the church

  379. will be eternally

  380. singing of the

  381. glory

  382. and greatness

  383. and majesty

  384. of God

  385. we will be

  386. singing of his

  387. great worth

  388. come and sit over

  389. here Anthony

  390. so I want you to

  391. with the person

  392. next to you

  393. now have a think

  394. what difference

  395. does it make

  396. starting with the

  397. glory of God

  398. and not the aims

  399. of evangelism

  400. and discipleship

  401. how would you

  402. expect church

  403. to feel different

  404. if it was aiming

  405. at worship

  406. first

  407. and not just

  408. at evangelism

  409. and discipleship

  410. okay

  411. have a think about

  412. that with the

  413. person next to

  414. you for a moment

  415. okay what

  416. difference do we

  417. think it would

  418. make starting

  419. with worship

  420. and glory

  421. and not evangelism

  422. and discipleship

  423. what difference

  424. do you think

  425. that might make

  426. what were you

  427. all talking

  428. about then

  429. okay

  430. mm-hmm

  431. yeah

  432. yeah

  433. so

  434. yep

  435. yeah

  436. so

  437. I am not

  438. just talking

  439. about singing

  440. no

  441. so we're

  442. talking about

  443. yeah

  444. glorifying God

  445. in general

  446. worship

  447. yeah

  448. so I

  449. we're going to

  450. talk about

  451. the gatherings

  452. of the church

  453. in a moment

  454. but yes

  455. yeah

  456. it's

  457. it

  458. Yeah, yeah.

  459. yeah yeah yeah I think I think that's really helpful so I think if we starting with worship

  460. in God's glory so saying that the church exists to worship God to bring God glory to ascribe worth

  461. honor to him means that it's not primarily starting with us it means that church is about

  462. the Lord and not about us it's about what he's doing and not about what we're doing the danger

  463. is that if if church is about firstly about evangelism there are things that you might be

  464. tempted to do to cut corners to make church feel slightly more effective and and that would

  465. obviously be a wrong thing to do yeah go on yeah okay

  466. yeah

  467. yeah

  468. yeah

  469. yeah

  470. yeah yeah so faithfulness just becomes much higher up the agenda doesn't it yeah yeah

  471. okay so that's our primary goal our primary means then um there are obviously many ways to glorify

  472. God many things that we could do and should do and will do that will make God look great but there is

  473. one thing which a church does which is the primary means of bringing God glory a primary tool I think

  474. also for these twin aims of evangelism and discipleship and that is the church gathers right the church

  475. gathers together for worship now I'm sure you don't need me to prove this to you but I'm going to do it

  476. anyway so let's try and work through this together and there should be some scriptures on your handout as

  477. well the point is that you could be an adequate church without lots of things right so you could be

  478. a healthy church that doesn't have a youth work or a toddler group or doesn't have a load of musicians

  479. who are able to play on a on a sunday or doesn't serve really nice coffee after the service or whatever

  480. you could be an adequate church with any of those things those things might be good things to do

  481. but they're not essential things if you don't gather you're not a church right so church by definition

  482. is a gathering right it's a gathering together of God's people if we don't do that then we're not a

  483. church we can be even more specific can't we if we don't gather to worship to celebrate the Lord's

  484. Supper and to practice baptism we're not a church because those things have been given to the church by

  485. the Lord Jesus for the means of his glory in a way it's just sort of assumed this in the New

  486. Testament word ecclesia which is translated church just literally means gathering I think it's used

  487. even of the rioters in Ephesus in the book of Acts who are a gathering of rioters so church essentially

  488. means meeting together gathering together for the purpose of worship it's what's happening all the way

  489. through the book of Acts and it probably the simplest place to show it is there in Hebrews 10 which is

  490. there on your handout in verse 19 therefore brothers and sisters since we have confidence to enter the

  491. most holy place by the blood of Jesus by a new and living way open for us through the curtain that is his

  492. body and since we have a great high priest over the house of God let us draw near to God with a sincere

  493. heart and with full assurance that faith brings having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty

  494. conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water let us hold unswervingly to the hope we

  495. profess for he who promised is faithful and let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love

  496. and good deeds not giving up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing but encouraging one

  497. another and all the more as you see the day approaching you get the sense don't you that the the church has

  498. experienced salvation for the purpose of gathering for worship is why it's full of old testament language

  499. and verse 25 is pretty clear that this meeting together is good for us as well as glorifying for

  500. God so the church has a primary means of bringing God's glory which is gathering together for corporate

  501. worship worship which involves singing praise it involves reading God's word it involves the preaching of

  502. God's word it involves praying it involves practicing baptism and lord supper together

  503. why do you think then and this is the next question just to discuss with the person next

  504. you why do you think the new testament places such a high value on the church meeting together

  505. for the purpose of corporate worship why do you think that's so important in the new testament

  506. because it's probably fair to say that most christians don't think that gathering together is

  507. quite as important as hebrews 10 25 might suggest that it is certainly the people who are the first

  508. readers of hebrews are not thinking that it's as important as it really is which is why

  509. verse 25 is written to them don't give it up as some as in the habit of doing so why do you think it does

  510. have a talk with the person next to you and we'll come back together

  511. okay what are our thoughts why do you think the new testament places such a high value on the church

  512. meeting together for corporate worship

  513. okay

  514. yes yeah yeah thank you but encouraging one other and all the more as you see the day approaching yeah

  515. yeah it anticipates it's going to be hard to keep going and you will need encouragement of meeting with other believers

  516. yes

  517. that's really helpful did you hear that so the the church meeting together with

  518. a a diverse group of people enables us to be way more balanced as christians because we're hearing from one

  519. another

  520. yes yes yeah that's really helpful thanks mike yeah anything else

  521. yes

  522. yes yes so it enables you to benefit from the gifts of others doesn't it yeah that you don't

  523. have yourself yeah that's really helpful i think i'd want to add that there's there's a movement

  524. in the bible isn't there that we are in one sense genesis one and two the garden of eden is like a

  525. kind of mini temple in the in the presence of god and they are they are living and enjoying the

  526. presence of god and they are excluded from it so they've they've entered into god's rest on the

  527. seventh day and are with him in his place yeah worshiping him living their lives in front of him

  528. for his glory enjoying the benefits of his provision for them and then they are excluded from it and then

  529. if you like in in the old testament temple worship they get a they get a sort of window back into what

  530. it might be like to live in the presence of god in temple worship and now in the new testament in the

  531. gathering of the local church here in hebrews using all this old testament language for for

  532. being sprinkled with the with the blood of the lord jesus and being brought near to him and gathering

  533. in his presence there's a sense in which that the the high value on the church meeting together is

  534. because this is where it's going right this now is a taste of where we will be

  535. you know this idea that we're going to be gathered together in the presence of god hearing from his word

  536. delighting in what he has done reveling at the lord jesus christ meeting with one another that that's

  537. that's our destiny and so on each kind of lord's day we gather at the beginning of the week to enjoy

  538. the rest of being with the lord and with his people worshiping and ascribing worth to him as a

  539. as a foretaste a glimpse of where we will be for all eternity and so that's why you know that's why

  540. you can't you know you become a christian and you by definition become a member of a local church it

  541. you know it it brings you into the people of god doesn't it because you're part of this gathering

  542. that god is is is gathering people from the nations uh for that great and glorious day okay so

  543. if it's if the goal of the local church is to bring god glory if if its primary means is this kind of

  544. corporate gathering then there are two twin aims which um i know many of us started with

  545. the the church uh is meant to disciple and uh evangelize so turn to matthew 28 it's there on

  546. your sheet matthew 28 verse 18 and this is what we're to be doing to bring god glory

    Matthew 28:18

  547. then jesus came and said to them all authority in heaven and earth has been given to me

  548. therefore go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the father and of

  549. the son and of the holy spirit and teaching them to obey everything i have commanded you

  550. and surely i am with you always to the very end of the age so the church is to go about making

  551. disciples isn't it specifically it seems going and making them and then baptizing them into the church

  552. and teaching them obedience we put those two labels on it don't we evangelism and discipleship

  553. now notice that's not a entirely separate activity to the gathering of the church it's not that the

  554. church is meant to gather to worship god and also to evangelize and disciple it seems to me that the

  555. gathering of the local church is the means that the lord gives us to evangelize and to build us up in

  556. discipleship new testament is clear isn't it that the church should expect unbelievers to be present

  557. with them when they gather and they should explain what they're doing accordingly new testament church

  558. is told more than that it's the display of the love and unity of the church which is one of the most

  559. powerful evidences for the work of god amongst them it's our most powerful apologetic if you like

  560. is god real does he really save people yeah come and see come and see what the local church is like

  561. the new testament is also very clear that you can't disciple believers without the gathering of the local church

  562. but still these activities of evangelism and discipleship are so central to our mission that we're doing them in lots

  563. of other ways too so look at these verses with me at the central command in the section is to make disciples

  564. it's not to go the go is passive but the the emphasis is on making and not going but of course the going is

  565. important you have to leave your house and leave the gatherings of the church to meet people

  566. and reach out to them with the gospel making disciples includes fishing for men as jesus talked about

  567. interestingly in the new testament this going seems to consist of going and starting other churches in

  568. other localities that don't have one so that they may own the mission to that local area and carry on

  569. fishing for disciples at the mass of people in each place then that the making of disciples involves the

  570. teaching obedience notice it's obedience in everything i have commanded so the church is to teach believers

  571. how to obey jesus how to live for him in each and every area of their life and notice two key things

  572. here firstly notice that the content of the teaching is the commands of jesus you know that this is similar

  573. to what we're thinking about this morning that jesus word accomplishes his purpose this means it's not

  574. the job of the church to run seminars or sermons on every single ethical question every church member might face

  575. right you know that that's impossible it's it's an impossible task for any church leader to try and address

  576. every single question that every individual is going to face instead we know that teaching the word of jesus

  577. the commands of jesus is sufficient for all of us as following him that's 2 timothy 3 16 and 17 isn't it

  578. which is on your at the back of your handout all scripture is god breathed and is useful for teaching

  579. and we need teaching rebuking and we need rebuking correcting training in righteousness so that the

  580. servant of god may be thoroughly equipped for every good work just read the verse backwards with me

  581. there it there is no good work that you need to be thoroughly equipped for but the scriptures will not

  582. equip you for so if your church is teaching you the scriptures they are discipling you for every

  583. and any situation that you may face even if they don't address it directly the second thing to notice

  584. is that teaching the commands of jesus is done in the strength of the spirit so he is with us always to

  585. the end of the age jesus's ongoing presence with his church by the spirit makes the teaching of the word

  586. jesus effective in the lives of the people who come so let me just try and put this together just as we

  587. finish right the church exists to worship god to bring god glory and it does that as it gathers

  588. and as it gathers it gathers to reach unbelievers with the gospel and teach and disciple believers

  589. so with that in mind i've got you can pick one of these right talk about with the person next to you

  590. a church in the neighborhood has stopped meeting together centrally because it thinks small groups

  591. are more effective for evangelism and discipleship is that a good idea why why not a church decides

  592. that it's more friendly to outsiders if they're going to stop praying together in their services

  593. instead they have moments of silence for the believers in the room to pray in their hearts is

  594. that a good idea why or why not knowing that people are reluctant to change a local church has not

  595. really asked the question should we still do it like this about their corporate gatherings what are

  596. the dangers for them maybe there are none maybe there are some you can pick one and go for it and

  597. we'll just have a brief look at those and then we'll sing to close okay

  598. i'm sorry to interrupt your conversations we're going to try and make sure that we finish by half past

  599. say does anyone want to who did the first one did anyone do the first one mike and sammy you did the

  600. first one what do you think

  601. yeah

  602. yeah

  603. yeah

  604. yeah

  605. yeah

  606. yeah

  607. yeah

  608. yeah

  609. yeah so really either i think what you're saying i don't want to oversimplify it mike but i think

  610. basically what you're saying is either these small groups should become churches themselves

  611. and do all the things that local churches should do or they should keep gathering as a church as one

  612. church yeah i did anyone else do the first one so anyone else want to chip in on that yes yes so

  613. the group should be in addition to the group should be in addition to yeah

  614. right

  615. that shouldn't happen

  616. yeah yeah yeah yeah

  617. yeah

  618. yeah

  619. yeah

  620. yes

  621. that's a really good point the small group it might be a really difficult way for

  622. people to find the church yeah

  623. yeah

  624. i think that the it's unlikely in a small group that you're going to be able to do all the functions of a church

  625. net and say actually that means that you're essentially saying that something less than a gathering of

  626. god's people is what we're going to do and i think that's unhelpful as no yeah

  627. yeah okay go on

  628. so what is the practical minimum

  629. uh

  630. to make for a natural church

  631. yeah

  632. what is the practical minimum

  633. to make for a natural church

  634. okay

  635. yeah that's right 10 men for a synagogue

  636. yeah

  637. so i don't think it's that i think um

  638. see i think it needs to be more than one person right so i i i think there's that i i think there needs to be something about leadership in the church so i think there's a um we're given the role of elders and deacons it seems in the new testament that unless a church has elders it's disordered and not really functioning properly you need to practice lord's supper you need to practice baptism there needs to be regular gatherings under the word of god um

  639. um yeah

  640. um yeah

  641. so i i think there might be there might be instances where lots of very small churches meeting together might be the most sensible way to do it particularly in situations of persecution um rather than one central gathering yeah

  642. yes

  643. yes

  644. yes

  645. yes

  646. yeah

  647. yeah

  648. yeah

  649. yeah

  650. you think of the house church movement in china and how that's been used by the lord yeah

  651. okay okay what about number two

  652. should we stop praying together to make ourselves more friendly to the outsiders

  653. joe what did you say because i was in your group what did you say

  654. what did you say do you think church should stop praying together to be more friendly

  655. yes

  656. you disagree with it i think

  657. great

  658. i think you're right joe yes church shouldn't stop praying

  659. yeah

  660. it's um

  661. it is possible for churches to sacrifice

  662. too much to try and be friendly to outsiders it seems in the new testament that actually as long as we're explaining what we're doing

  663. in fact the sense that it's kind of mysterious to outsiders is part of

  664. part of what it should be what about the third one

  665. did anyone get that far or anyone start there

  666. yeah it sounds pretty desperate yes

  667. yeah

  668. yeah

  669. yeah

  670. it seems like churches are specifically located in a time and a place doesn't it

  671. and so we've got to think about the time and the place that we're located in

  672. um obviously there are boundaries about what we are and aren't to do

  673. but in inside of those boundaries we are to ask the question of where am i

  674. and what time is it in order to decide what we do

  675. great

  676. thank you let me pray for us and our church and then we'll

  677. stand and sing oh church arise as we close

  678. father in heaven we thank you so much for your great and glorious plan of salvation

  679. that gathers people like us together in local churches where you display your glory

  680. in our diversity

  681. how we thank you

  682. that we see that here in our church and we praise you for it

  683. and ask lord that you would help us to bring you great glory to worship you truly and faithfully

  684. and that in doing that we would reach many more with the good news of the lord jesus and disciple

  685. and train one another to live to your praise and glory in jesus name amen
