  1. Morning Church.

  2. Okay, the reading is taken from Mark chapter 4, verses 1 to 20.

    Mark 4:1–20

  3. You can find that on pages 1005 in your church Bible.

  4. You can also follow on the screen behind me.

  5. Again, Jesus began to teach by the lake.

  6. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat in it out on the lake,

  7. while all the people were along the shore at the water's edge.

  8. He taught them many things by parables, and in his teachings said,

  9. Listen, a farmer went out to sow his seed.

  10. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.

  11. Some fell on rocky places where it did not have much soil.

  12. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow.

  13. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered, because they had no root.

  14. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants,

  15. so that they did not bear grain.

  16. Still other seed fell on good soil.

  17. It came up, grew, and produced a crop.

  18. Some multiplying 30, some 60, some 100 times.

  19. Then Jesus said,

  20. Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.

  21. When he was alone, the 12 and the others around him asked him about the parables.

  22. He told them,

  23. The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you,

  24. but to those on the outside, everything is said in parables,

  25. so that they may be ever seen, but never perceiving,

  26. and ever hearing, but never understanding.

  27. Otherwise, they might turn and be forgiven.

  28. Then Jesus said to them,

  29. Don't you understand this parable?

  30. How then will you understand any parable?

  31. The farmer sows the word.

  32. Some people are like seed along the path where the word is sown.

  33. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes it away,

  34. and the word that was sown in them.

  35. Others, like seed sown on rocky places,

  36. hear the word and at once receive it with joy.

  37. But since they have no root, they last only a short time.

  38. When trouble or persecution comes,

  39. because of the word, they quickly fall away.

  40. Still others, like seed sown among thorns,

  41. hear the word.

  42. But the worries of this life,

  43. the deceitfulness of wealth,

  44. and the desires for other things,

  45. come in and choke the word,

  46. making it unfruitful.

  47. Others, like seed sown on ground,

  48. on good soil,

  49. hear the word,

  50. accept it,

  51. and produce a crop.

  52. Some 30,

  53. some 60,

  54. some 100 times

  55. that was sown.

  56. This is the word of the Lord.

  57. Great, thank you, Yvonne.

  58. Do keep that passage open in front of you.

  59. We're going to be working our way through it.

  60. Let's pray

  61. and ask for the Lord's help as we come to his word.

  62. Let's pray.

  63. Father, we do thank you for your word to us.

  64. We pray now that you might help us to listen carefully

  65. to what you're saying to us.

  66. Help me, I pray,

  67. to speak clearly.

  68. Help all of us to have tender,

  69. good soil hearts

  70. that listen and accept what you're saying to us.

  71. In Jesus' name.

  72. Amen.

  73. Now, let me tell you something

  74. which you're probably sure of anyway.

  75. That is that self-awareness

  76. is a rare thing, right?

  77. We are pretty good, I think,

  78. when it comes to seeing

  79. the mistakes of others

  80. and less good at seeing the contribution

  81. that perhaps we've made to situations.

  82. Let me give you some examples

  83. to show you what I mean.

  84. Maybe you're at school, right?

  85. Maybe you've had a really bad week

  86. at school this week.

  87. And you know why you've had a bad week

  88. at school this week.

  89. It's because the teachers hate you.

  90. They mark your work harder

  91. than anybody else's.

  92. They have it in for you.

  93. They see you coming.

  94. They're unkind to you, right?

  95. You're really sure of all that.

  96. What you're less aware of

  97. is that the fact that you don't do any work

  98. might also contribute to the fact

  99. that you've had a bad week at school, perhaps.

  100. It's the same dynamic at work, isn't it?

  101. When a project goes wrong

  102. or when a contract falls over

  103. or when that bid for new work doesn't come off,

  104. we are pretty clear on all the mistakes

  105. that other members of the team have made

  106. and are less clear about our own contribution to it.

  107. We're blind to that.

  108. It's the same in family arguments.

  109. Maybe you don't have family arguments,

  110. but if you do, it's the same in those, isn't it?

  111. Where the unreasonableness of everybody else

  112. in your family is really obvious to you.

  113. Well, they're so selfish.

  114. They are always like that.

  115. They are always putting themselves first.

  116. And you can see it really clearly,

  117. but your own contribution to it,

  118. well, you're blind to that.

  119. Now, obviously, that sort of lack of self-awareness

  120. is different in different characters.

  121. Some of us are inclined to self-pity.

  122. Some of us are inclined to arrogance.

  123. But the fact is that not knowing ourselves

  124. and not knowing our own contribution in any situation

  125. is really a problem, isn't it, in our lives?

  126. Maybe you're still unpersuaded.

  127. Let me suggest to you something that you could do

  128. if you're unpersuaded that a lack of self-awareness

  129. is a problem.

  130. Why not, after church, speak to a good friend

  131. and say to them something like this,

  132. please, can you tell me everything

  133. that you think I am unaware of

  134. that contributes to the problems that I have, right?

  135. And then just brace yourself

  136. for whatever it is that comes next.

  137. Now, in a sense, that is the dynamic of Mark chapter four.

  138. In Mark chapter four, Jesus is that good friend.

  139. And he's saying to you, listen,

  140. there is a spiritual version of a lack of self-awareness.

  141. And I want to, like a good friend

  142. with my hand on your shoulder,

  143. I want to show you the contribution

  144. that your heart is making

  145. to your acceptance of the gospel.

  146. You see, we say things like this, don't we,

  147. in a sort of lack of spiritual self-awareness.

  148. We say things like, do you know what?

  149. I would be a better Christian

  150. if I went to a better church.

  151. Church is kind of boring, really.

  152. It's a pain to get to.

  153. Or, do you know, life is so busy,

  154. I would be a better Christian

  155. if my life wasn't so busy.

  156. I would read my Bible and pray more

  157. if it wasn't for the kids getting up so early.

  158. You know, Jesus would be more present to me

  159. in my day-to-day life

  160. if I didn't just have so much to do.

  161. Or perhaps you think, do you know what?

  162. Honestly, I've got better things to be doing,

  163. other priorities you wouldn't understand.

  164. You don't know where I'm coming from.

  165. None of this Jesus stuff resonates with me anymore.

  166. And into that kind of lack of self-awareness,

  167. spiritual self-awareness,

  168. Jesus tells the parable of the sower in Mark 4.

  169. It's probably more accurate to call it

  170. the parable of the soils

  171. because it's the soil that's in view

  172. rather than the sower.

  173. In the picture, the farmer is liberally scattering the seed

  174. and in the image,

  175. Jesus is the one scattering the seed.

  176. And the seed, as we saw with the kids,

  177. is the word of God,

  178. the message of the gospel,

  179. the good news of the kingdom.

  180. This message that he has been telling

  181. since the beginning of Mark's gospel

  182. of repentance and faith in him for forgiveness.

  183. And this seed lands on four different types of soil.

  184. The path,

  185. the rocks,

  186. the weeds,

  187. and the good soil.

  188. And those soils, we find,

  189. are human hearts,

  190. the different responses to the same message,

  191. the same gospel message.

  192. And the parable, in effect,

  193. says that our spiritual condition

  194. is a reflection of what's going on in our hearts.

  195. You know, in the parable,

  196. all the other conditions are the same, right?

  197. It's the same seed,

  198. it's the same farmer,

  199. it's the same weather,

  200. but the responses are different

  201. as a reflection of the heart.

  202. So let's just start by walking through

  203. these different types of soil.

  204. The first is the path.

  205. I think first,

  206. when I read this as a kid,

  207. I imagined that this was sort of,

  208. you know, like concrete slabs.

  209. I don't think it's really like that.

  210. What really is going on here

  211. is like compacted soil.

  212. It has been squashed down by foot traffic.

  213. And the seed landing here stays on top,

  214. it is snatched away by the birds.

  215. And Jesus explains the picture in verse 15.

  216. Look at verse 15.

  217. Some people, he says,

  218. are like seed along the path

  219. where the word is sown.

  220. As soon as they hear it,

  221. Satan comes and takes away the word

  222. that was sown in them.

  223. It's a tragic image.

  224. This is the image I was trying to conjure up

  225. with throwing the seeds around

  226. the church building here,

  227. that it would just go to waste.

  228. There's nothing for it to take root in.

  229. Perfectly good seed goes to waste,

  230. snatched away, we're told,

  231. by the devil himself,

  232. because the hardness of the heart

  233. has prevented it from penetrating

  234. even in a small way.

  235. By its very definition,

  236. this is hard, isn't it,

  237. to address in a gathering like this?

  238. If your heart is like the path this morning,

  239. then you're probably not listening to me.

  240. Probably on your phone,

  241. doing the word search on the notice sheet

  242. or counting the chairs

  243. or something like that.

  244. But let me just try and wake you up

  245. for a moment.

  246. Because Jesus here wants to wake us up

  247. to the possibility that

  248. the reason that we're not a Christian

  249. this morning,

  250. the reason that we find all of this

  251. a bit dull and a bit impenetrable

  252. is not because the seed is bad.

  253. It's not because the farmer is poor

  254. or the weather is no good.

  255. No, it's because our hearts are hard

  256. to the message of the gospel,

  257. trodden down from years of refusing to listen

  258. and the seed just kind of bounces off.

  259. The very idea that you are owned

  260. by a God who has made you,

  261. that you are given a life

  262. to live for his glory,

  263. and that your failure,

  264. our failure to live life for him

  265. and for his glory,

  266. that failure has left us

  267. in a moral peril

  268. before a holy God.

  269. A moral peril that only Jesus

  270. can save us from.

  271. Those ideas,

  272. you never really thought about them properly.

  273. That's because you won't think about them.

  274. So let me ask you this morning

  275. whether that might be you.

  276. Might you be like the path this morning?

  277. Honestly, it's lots of people

  278. in our world, isn't it?

  279. The people around whom

  280. we spend much of our time.

  281. Perhaps you're a parent this morning

  282. and you find that your children

  283. are like this.

  284. Or maybe your nieces

  285. or your nephews

  286. or your grandchildren

  287. or your mum or your dad.

  288. They're just not interested

  289. in any encounter

  290. with the gospel message.

  291. And every time you try and share it,

  292. it's like it just bounces right off.

  293. They ignore it.

  294. The devil snatches it away.

  295. And it's desperately sad

  296. because the seed is good.

  297. The farmer is kind.

  298. The weather is the same for everyone.

  299. But it takes no root.

  300. The second soil is the rocky soil.

  301. Here the image seems to be shallow soil

  302. over some kind of bedrock.

  303. So it's not just that the soil itself

  304. is littered with stones,

  305. but more that the soil

  306. is just a shallow layer

  307. over a bedrock underneath it.

  308. The soil warms up quickly in the sun.

  309. So the seed sort of germinates quicker

  310. than any of the others

  311. springing up ahead.

  312. Eventually, though,

  313. that layer of rock becomes a problem

  314. because the roots can't go down.

  315. So the plant doesn't last.

  316. The sun gets hotter into the summer

  317. and the plant is ruined.

  318. Look down at verse 16

  319. and you'll see Jesus' explanation.

  320. Others, he says,

  321. like seed sown on rocky places,

  322. hear the word

  323. and at once receive it with joy.

  324. But since they have no root,

  325. they last only a short time.

  326. When trouble or persecution

  327. comes because of the word,

  328. they quickly fall away.

  329. This rocky soil

  330. and the weedy soil afterwards

  331. that we'll find

  332. point to this reality

  333. that false faith

  334. and true faith

  335. look, at least for a time,

  336. identical to one another.

  337. You know, at the start,

  338. there's no difference

  339. between the shallow soil plant

  340. and the good soil plant.

  341. In fact, if anything,

  342. the shallow soil plant

  343. is growing ahead

  344. of the good soil plant.

  345. But then things start

  346. to get more difficult

  347. and more difficult

  348. in a very specific way.

  349. Look down and notice

  350. what he says.

  351. It's here,

  352. it's about trouble

  353. and persecution coming

  354. because of the word.

  355. So here is it,

  356. as we discover,

  357. having listened to the gospel

  358. and in a certain sense

  359. accepted it,

  360. we discover that

  361. that actually makes

  362. our lives more difficult

  363. and not easier.

  364. Perhaps we thought

  365. that trusting Jesus

  366. might just be a kind of

  367. nice bolt-on to our life.

  368. You know,

  369. kind of a cultural insurance policy

  370. for when we die.

  371. But then being a Christian

  372. turns out to make

  373. really tough demands

  374. of our life choices.

  375. Doesn't prove to be

  376. very popular

  377. with our friends

  378. or our family.

  379. And so we give up.

  380. You know,

  381. the seed was good,

  382. the farmer was kind,

  383. the weather was the same

  384. for everybody,

  385. but the soil was shallow.

  386. And so the plant

  387. only lasted for a short time.

  388. I think as a sort of

  389. bit of an aside here,

  390. it's worth just noticing

  391. Jesus' wisdom here

  392. for how we take

  393. professions of faith.

  394. He says here,

  395. doesn't he,

  396. that effectively

  397. we should take

  398. professions of faith

  399. seriously,

  400. but we should also

  401. take them patiently.

  402. I wonder whether

  403. this is perhaps

  404. particularly important

  405. for Christian parents

  406. and youth leaders

  407. to hear.

  408. You know,

  409. how do you know

  410. if that profession of faith

  411. that your eight-year-old

  412. is making is genuine?

  413. Well,

  414. Jesus says,

  415. doesn't he,

  416. just like with anybody's

  417. profession of faith,

  418. you cannot tell

  419. whether it's genuine

  420. just by the earnestness

  421. of it.

  422. In fact,

  423. earnestness

  424. is the speciality

  425. of the shallow soil.

  426. You can only see

  427. the genuineness

  428. of a profession

  429. when it is tested

  430. by trouble

  431. and persecution

  432. and whether it

  433. perseveres.

  434. So maybe when

  435. the eight-year-old

  436. turns 16 or 17

  437. and their school friends

  438. are mocking them

  439. for attending church

  440. or when they leave home

  441. and living for Jesus

  442. is way more difficult,

  443. well,

  444. then you'll know

  445. whether their faith

  446. is genuine.

  447. Now,

  448. the point is not

  449. that we discourage

  450. an eight-year-old

  451. from professing faith

  452. in Jesus Christ.

  453. Of course not.

  454. The point is

  455. that we don't give up

  456. praying for them

  457. or assume

  458. that it's all right

  459. because we need

  460. to see perseverance.

  461. And that's not just

  462. for children,

  463. is it?

  464. Maybe this is for us

  465. this morning.

  466. Maybe there was a time

  467. when you would have

  468. called yourself a Christian.

  469. You were going for it.

  470. You were earnest.

  471. You were enthusiastic.

  472. You couldn't wait

  473. to pick up a Bible

  474. in the morning.

  475. You couldn't wait

  476. to come to church

  477. and sing praises to God.

  478. But then it just

  479. got too difficult.

  480. You realized

  481. that following Christ

  482. came at a cost

  483. to yourself.

  484. That following Jesus

  485. would mean saying goodbye

  486. to friends and family

  487. to serve the gospel

  488. somewhere else.

  489. Or that being a Christian

  490. would make you suspicious

  491. to the HR team at work.

  492. Being a Christian

  493. might narrow your chances

  494. of getting married

  495. and so you gave up.

  496. You gave up on the message.

  497. The third soil

  498. is similar in a way.

  499. It's the weeds.

  500. Here the plant grows

  501. and looks healthy

  502. and genuine

  503. just like before.

  504. Indistinguishable

  505. from a genuine plant.

  506. But the problem here

  507. is that the soil

  508. is full of weeds.

  509. If you've ever done

  510. any gardening at all

  511. you will know

  512. that by definition

  513. weeds grow faster

  514. than plants.

  515. When Vanessa

  516. and I lived in Liverpool

  517. we had an allotment.

  518. It was the trial

  519. of my life

  520. going to the allotment.

  521. I hated it.

  522. Vanessa loved it.

  523. But the only thing

  524. we were successful

  525. at growing in the allotment

  526. were weeds.

  527. You didn't have to do anything.

  528. They grew fast.

  529. They grew tall.

  530. They took over everywhere.

  531. And that's what's going on here

  532. isn't it?

  533. Look at verse 18

  534. and see what Jesus says.

  535. Still others

  536. like seed

  537. sown among thorns

  538. hear the word.

  539. But the worries

  540. of this life

  541. the deceitfulness

  542. of wealth

  543. and the desire

  544. for other things

  545. come in

  546. and choke the word

  547. making it unfruitful.

  548. It's a tragic image

  549. isn't it?

  550. Interestingly here

  551. it's not so much

  552. that the challenge

  553. of the weeds

  554. is connected

  555. to the word.

  556. It's not persecution

  557. here is it?

  558. Rather this is just

  559. life.

  560. It's the troubles

  561. of this world.

  562. The worries of life.

  563. You know

  564. will I have enough

  565. to make ends meet?

  566. Will I be alone?

  567. Will my children be safe?

  568. Will my parents be okay?

  569. And it's not just worries

  570. is it?

  571. It seems it's also successes.

  572. It's the deceitfulness

  573. of wealth

  574. as he puts it.

  575. You know

  576. this trick

  577. that money plays

  578. on you

  579. that it makes you

  580. deceived

  581. into this idea

  582. that you've got

  583. everything that you need.

  584. Those lies

  585. come and choke

  586. the plant

  587. and kill it.

  588. Again

  589. you probably

  590. don't have to think

  591. hard to think

  592. about how this

  593. might work

  594. or even to come

  595. up with examples.

  596. You can think

  597. of lots of

  598. people I was

  599. at university with

  600. friends who were

  601. passionate for the gospel

  602. people who considered

  603. going into

  604. full-time Christian

  605. ministry

  606. even did it

  607. for a time

  608. but now

  609. in midlife

  610. and often

  611. in successful jobs

  612. are now

  613. nowhere

  614. spiritually.

  615. Their Christian

  616. lives have been

  617. choked by

  618. materialism

  619. consumerism

  620. holidays

  621. experiences

  622. and again

  623. this is a call

  624. for self-awareness

  625. isn't it

  626. to see

  627. that thing

  628. that you

  629. really desire

  630. that you

  631. really long

  632. for

  633. might it just

  634. choke the life

  635. out of you

  636. spiritually?

  637. The desire

  638. for money

  639. or possessions

  640. or even

  641. skills

  642. or adventure

  643. or travel

  644. even just

  645. that love

  646. fueled worry

  647. that you

  648. have for your

  649. grandchildren

  650. it can become

  651. the weeds

  652. and the thorns

  653. that sucks

  654. the life

  655. out of your

  656. soul

  657. leaving you

  658. dead at the

  659. harvest

  660. and Jesus

  661. you know

  662. like that

  663. friend with

  664. his arm

  665. on your

  666. shoulder

  667. is saying

  668. listen

  669. have you

  670. thought that

  671. that might

  672. be you?

  673. Have you

  674. considered that?

  675. You see

  676. the seed

  677. is good

  678. the farmer

  679. is kind

  680. the weather

  681. is the same

  682. for everybody

  683. it's our

  684. hearts

  685. that are the

  686. trouble

  687. the final

  688. soil

  689. is the

  690. good soil

  691. really

  692. it's a mistake

  693. I think

  694. to take the

  695. parable

  696. mostly negatively

  697. because in

  698. many ways

  699. the big

  700. surprise of

  701. the passage

  702. is not so

  703. much the

  704. path

  705. the rocks

  706. or the

  707. weeds

  708. the big

  709. surprise of

  710. the passage

  711. is the

  712. size of

  713. the harvest

  714. at the

  715. end of

  716. it

  717. in fact

  718. it gets

  719. repeated

  720. in verse

  721. 8 and

  722. in verse

  723. 20

  724. verse 8

  725. still other

  726. seed fell

  727. on good

  728. soil

  729. it came

  730. up and

  731. produced

  732. a crop

  733. some

  734. multiplying

  735. 30

  736. some

  737. 60

  738. some

  739. 100

  740. times

  741. he says

  742. same

  743. verse 20

  744. others like

  745. seed sown

  746. on good

  747. soil

  748. hear the

  749. word

  750. accept it

  751. and produce

  752. a crop

  753. some 30

  754. some 60

  755. some 100

  756. times what

  757. we're sown

  758. here then is

  759. the hope

  760. of the story

  761. that there is

  762. such a thing

  763. as good

  764. soil that

  765. produces

  766. a miraculous

  767. crop

  768. that although

  769. the stony

  770. soil and

  771. the weedy

  772. soil might

  773. be able to

  774. fake initial

  775. growth

  776. still only

  777. the good

  778. soil that

  779. bears harvest

  780. fruits for

  781. the farmer

  782. here I

  783. assume that

  784. Jesus means

  785. that you can

  786. tell genuine

  787. faith not

  788. only by its

  789. perseverance over

  790. time but also

  791. by its

  792. fruitfulness over

  793. time that's

  794. what this

  795. 30 60

  796. 100 times

  797. means and

  798. for sure it's

  799. it's spiritual

  800. fruit isn't it

  801. in honoring God

  802. in godly character

  803. and behavior but

  804. it's more than

  805. just that here I

  806. think the fruit is

  807. is implied in

  808. in more

  809. harvest more

  810. seeds sown

  811. more crops

  812. coming the

  813. word multiplying

  814. and spreading

  815. from the plant

  816. that stands the

  817. test of time

  818. and just as we

  819. can think of the

  820. negative examples

  821. we can think of

  822. this can't we

  823. you talk to the

  824. people in this

  825. room you will

  826. hear stories of

  827. perseverance

  828. through storms

  829. and trials

  830. you will hear

  831. conversion stories

  832. in extraordinary

  833. circumstances

  834. you will hear

  835. stories of good

  836. soil hearts who

  837. faced grief and

  838. loss and

  839. persevered racism

  840. and abuse and

  841. persevered love

  842. for Christ that's

  843. kept going and

  844. kept living for

  845. him you'll hear

  846. stories of

  847. families who've

  848. come to faith

  849. through the

  850. witness of

  851. children stories

  852. of missionaries

  853. sent to other

  854. places of

  855. churches started

  856. of communities

  857. transformed by

  858. the witness of

  859. the church

  860. and this kind

  861. of persevering

  862. fruitfulness is

  863. what we long

  864. for for a

  865. church isn't it

  866. that this merging

  867. of our churches

  868. together is not

  869. just a blip of

  870. shallow soil

  871. growth but of

  872. lasting fruitful

  873. Christ honoring

  874. growth

  875. now there's a

  876. way to tell if

  877. you've understood

  878. the parable so

  879. far if you've

  880. understood what's

  881. going on there

  882. should be a

  883. longing in your

  884. heart that

  885. says something

  886. like this I

  887. want to be

  888. good soil I

  889. long to be good

  890. soil please Lord I

  891. want to be good

  892. soil I want to

  893. stand the test of

  894. time I want to

  895. hear this message

  896. of the kingdom

  897. this message of

  898. freedom and

  899. forgiveness through

  900. the Lord Jesus

  901. Christ I want to

  902. to bear fruit I

  903. want to grow in

  904. understanding of

  905. the gospel I want

  906. to grow in love

  907. for others I don't

  908. want to give up I

  909. don't want to burn

  910. out I don't want to

  911. be choked out by

  912. other things Lord I

  913. want to be good

  914. soil that's what

  915. you should be

  916. saying now if

  917. that's you this

  918. morning and I

  919. hope that's all of

  920. us then you need

  921. to hear the second

  922. part of the parable

  923. because mark 4 is

  924. not only a

  925. description of the

  926. good soil it also

  927. tells you where good

  928. soil comes from

  929. because it points out

  930. to us that only God

  931. can make good soil

  932. so essentially it's

  933. not only I want to

  934. be good soil it's

  935. it's calling out to

  936. God God make me

  937. good soil please Lord

  938. make me good soil this

  939. is a little bit

  940. complicated so stay

  941. stay with me if you

  942. can and notice first

  943. that mark has done

  944. this trick that we've

  945. seen him do a number

  946. of occasions on our

  947. way through the book

  948. so far that he has

  949. swapped in material

  950. that is a different

  951. chronological time and

  952. put it in our story

  953. so in verse 1 you'll

  954. notice that Jesus is in

  955. a boat right it's a

  956. floating pulpit that

  957. he has pushed out to

  958. sea so that the

  959. crowds can't press in

  960. on him but then in

  961. verse 10 you'll notice

  962. that he is alone with

  963. his disciples explaining

  964. the parable and telling

  965. them why it is that he

  966. is speaking in parables

  967. but then if you scan

  968. over to verse 35 you'll

  969. find that Jesus is back

  970. in the boat again of

  971. verse 1 now all that

  972. means that this story

  973. about the soils is more

  974. than just a story about

  975. the soil so yes this

  976. story is about self

  977. awareness about the

  978. state of our hearts but

  979. it's it's more than that

  980. he is he is giving us a

  981. prototype of a type of

  982. story that he's telling

  983. of parables and wants

  984. to tell you the special

  985. function that parables

  986. have in his ministry so

  987. the parables says Jesus

  988. work because they are

  989. clear explanations of

  990. gospel truth truth like

  991. the state of human hearts

  992. like we've been finding

  993. in Mark 4 and those

  994. clear explanations so

  995. simple stories expose the

  996. difference between an

  997. outsider and an insider to

  998. Jesus that's the language

  999. that he uses in verses 10

1000. and 11 look down at

  1001. verses 10 and 11 when he

1002. was alone the 12 and the

  1003. others around him asked

1004. him about the parables he

1005. told them the secret of

1006. the kingdom of God has

1007. been given to you but to

  1008. those on the outside

  1009. everything is said in

1010. parables so that they may

1011. be ever seeing but never

  1012. perceiving ever hearing but

  1013. never understanding otherwise

1014. they may turn and be

1015. forgiven now it's tricky but

1016. the point is that for some

  1017. for those outside the

  1018. kingdom the ongoing effect

  1019. of encountering the clear

  1020. explanations of the gospel

1021. in the parables is a

  1022. hardening of their hearts

  1023. a hardening which is

  1024. transparently the fault of

  1025. the individual because they

1026. can no longer claim that

  1027. they haven't heard the

  1028. gospel they've rejected it

1029. so Jesus point is not that

1030. the simile of the soils that

1031. we've been talking about is

1032. just too complex for an

  1033. outsider of course that's

1034. not the case is it a child

  1035. can understand the story

1036. rather the point is that the

  1037. gospel truth behind the

1038. story is not something you

  1039. work out intellectually with

1040. your brain the gospel truth

1041. behind the story needs to be

1042. revealed to you so that

  1043. listening to parables makes

1044. paths more pathy rocks more

1045. rocky and weeds more weedy if

  1046. that's possible and that's not

  1047. unintentional from Jesus that

1048. is his intention in the

1049. parables the hearing of the

1050. gospel is a sense a kind of

1051. judgment on unbelief even as

  1052. it brings salvation to

1053. believers let me try and

1054. illustrate it for you if I

1055. can imagine it like this it's

1056. not a perfect analogy but it

1057. will help a little bit

1058. imagine that I came to you

1059. and said listen I'd love to

1060. catch up with you I want to

1061. see can we go and get coffee

1062. at some point you said to

  1063. me yeah sure that's great I'd

1064. love to spend some time with

  1065. you Steve let's let's go and

1066. chat it'd be great can you

  1067. what about tomorrow morning

1068. you say and I tend to you

1069. and say oh no I'm really so I

  1070. can't do tomorrow morning I'm

1071. busy okay you say well what

  1072. about tomorrow afternoon I

  1073. can't do tomorrow afternoon I'm

  1074. busy tomorrow afternoon okay

1075. well what about Tuesday I'm

1076. free to all day Tuesday I'm

1077. free all day Oh no I'm really

  1078. sorry I can't do Tuesday

1079. anytime of the day I'm busy

1080. all day Tuesday okay no

1081. problem you say what about

  1082. Wednesday Wednesday I could

  1083. do Wednesday afternoon what

1084. about you Oh no I can't do

  1085. Wednesday afternoon I'm busy

1086. Wednesday afternoon. I'm washing my hair on Wednesday afternoon. You begin to think, don't you,

1087. that I don't want to see you, even though I've said I do. And that, in a sense, is how the parables

1088. work in the life of an unbeliever. You hear the gospel again. It's a simple and clear explanation

1089. of the gospel. Not interested. I don't want to know. And you are affirmed and confirmed in your

1090. unbelief. It's a judgment on you because it exposes your heart that actually the problem is not the

1091. seed, because the seed is good. The farmer is kind. The weather's the same for everybody.

1092. But you're rejecting the message and hardening your heart to Jesus. And the parables expose that.

1093. This reality comes through again in the way that Jesus talks to the disciples about their faith.

1094. Notice what Jesus says here. He doesn't say to the disciples, oh, you've worked it out. You deserve to

1095. be insiders. You're bright guys. No, he says in verse 11 that the secret of the kingdom was

1096. given to them. It was given by God. It was a free gift. It's the same idea in the bumper crop in verses

1097. eight and verse 20. You know, the idea is a farmer who received such a bumper crop, what would they say

1098. as they were harvesting it? They would say, wow, God's been good to me this year. Look what God has done.

1099. Look at this crop. It's amazing. It's incredible. I can't believe it. Look what God has done.

1100. Because God gives us the growth. God alone makes good soil. So we're responsible, aren't we, for the

1101. hardness of our hearts, for the distraction of wealth, for the shallowness of our response.

1102. But the only one with the power to change us is the farmer. He's the one who can dig through the path.

1103. He's the one who can clear the stones, remove the weeds. So much so that if you understand the parable,

1104. you're not only saying, I want to be good soil and going away and trying harder. You know, I'm going to

1105. love better. I'm going to think harder. I'm going to do more. That won't help you. The soil can't weed

1106. itself. If you understand the parable, you'll be on your knees saying, Lord, make me good soil.

1107. Please, Lord, make me good soil. Lord, will you pull out these weeds in my heart? I've seen them.

1108. Get rid of them. Will you dig through this bedrock and make me deep rooted in Christ?

1109. Will you turn over this path? Because he alone can do it.

1110. Let me just try and land this for us as we close this morning. Perhaps you've been convicted this

1111. morning that spiritually you're not quite where you should be or where you pretend to be, where you'd

1112. like to be. You can see the weeds. They've been graciously pointed out to you this morning by the

1113. Lord Jesus. Perhaps you've seen that your desires are not what they should be, that your efforts are

1114. misdirected. Maybe you've lost sight of what's really important. Maybe there's a relationship or a career or a

1115. struggle in your life which is consuming you, throttling your spiritual growth. And it's easy, isn't it, in a

1116. moment like this to see that and to notice it, but not to do the right thing with it. What's the right

1117. thing to do? Well, it's to be sure that you can't fix it on your own. The right thing to do is to pray

1118. now in your heart that God by his spirit would do some gardening in you, that he would pull out that

1119. weedy desire for self-glory. He would break through that rock of worry that makes you depend on yourself,

1120. that he would defeat that anxious belief that relies on its own efforts and not his. Lord, make me good

1121. soil. And as we pray that for ourselves, let's pray like that for others in the church too, that our

1122. young people sat in this room and making noise behind me that you might be able to hear, let's pray that

1123. God would make them good soil. That in a world that tells them that preaching is dull, that churches are

1124. relevant, that the gospel's nothing to do with them. May the gospel find good soil in their hearts

1125. that bears much fruit. Let's pray for others in the church who are going through trouble, that they

1126. wouldn't be scorched by the sun, but it would have deep roots that keep them watered through the

1127. difficulties. And let's pray that God, through Christ, would throw the seed far and wide in our

1128. neighbourhood, not being too excited by a fast response, but looking for a persevering, fruitful response.

1129. Well, let me close in prayer. We'll just have a moment of quiet for us to pray in our own hearts

1130. and then I'll pray and then we'll sing together.

1131. Heavenly Father, we pray, please, make us good soil. We long, Lord, to persevere and to bear fruit.

1132. Please help us, we ask. We know that so often our spiritual lives are choked out by the worries of

1133. this life. Please, we pray, pull out those weeds that we might live lives for your praise and your glory.

1134. In Jesus' name. Amen. Amen.
