  1. Now Daisy's going to come and read God's word for us and then David's going to preach.

  2. So Daisy, over to you.

  3. So we're going to be reading Mark 4 from verse 21 on page 1006.

  4. He said to them,

  5. Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed?

  6. Instead, don't you put it on its stand?

  7. For whatever is hidden is meant to be disclosed,

  8. and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out into the open.

  9. If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.

  10. Consider carefully what you hear, he continued.

  11. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you, and even more.

  12. Whoever has will be given more.

  13. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.

  14. He also said,

  15. This is what the kingdom of God is like.

  16. A man scatters seed on the ground, night and day,

  17. whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows,

  18. though he does not know how.

  19. All by itself, the soil produces corn,

  20. first the stalk, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.

  21. As soon as the corn is ripe, he puts the sickle to it,

  22. because the harvest has come.

  23. Again he said,

  24. What shall we say the kingdom of God is like,

  25. or what parable shall we use to describe it?

  26. It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth.

  27. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants,

  28. with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.

  29. With many similar parables, Jesus spoke the word to them,

  30. as much as they could understand.

  31. He did not say anything to them without using a parable,

  32. but when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

  33. David.

  34. Thanks, Daisy.

  35. Thanks, everyone.

  36. Again, David, I'm one of the leaders,

  37. and I've got the pleasure of sharing with you all today.

  38. So let me just pray before we get started, all right?

  39. Father, thank you so much for bringing us together this morning,

  40. for waking us up, giving us the opportunity to open your word,

  41. to read it, to consider what it has for us.

  42. Father, I pray that you would give us understanding,

  43. that you would open our minds and our hearts to see what you have,

  44. to know what you're telling us,

  45. to listen and to accept it as truth and beneficial to our lives.

  46. Lord, would you move in this room this morning,

  47. bring us closer to you and to one another.

  48. In Jesus' name, amen.

  49. Amen.

  50. Well, thanks again.

  51. I'm excited to be up here.

  52. So as Daisy read, we're reading in Mark chapter 4, verses 21 to 34,

    Mark 4:21–34

  53. and it contains these three little parables,

  54. the lamp on the stand, the parable of the growing seed,

  55. and the parable of the mustard seed.

  56. And this passage, these parables, they're confusing.

  57. They can be confusing.

  58. They certainly take more effort to understand

  59. than something that would be perfectly clear, perfectly laid out.

  60. And Jesus, in the passage just before this,

  61. spoke of the concept of parables and why he speaks in parables,

  62. stating that the secret of the kingdom of God has been given to us,

  63. but to those on the outside, everything is said in parables,

  64. so that they may be ever seeing but not perceiving,

  65. ever hearing but not understanding.

  66. Otherwise, they might turn and be forgiven.

  67. And that statement can be difficult to digest,

  68. or at least hard to understand initially,

  69. because it seems to suggest that there are some

  70. that aren't meant to understand,

  71. or aren't meant to hear what he has to say.

  72. And it raises some questions, and it should raise questions, right?

  73. I recently had a big contract to work on at work,

  74. and there were several lawyers involved,

  75. a whole team of lawyers on both sides.

  76. And we would spend hours, literally hours,

  77. looking at clause by clause through this contract

  78. that was some 70-something pages long.

  79. It was not my favorite time.

  80. And the whole contract is written by lawyers in legal language,

  81. I think intentionally so that the other lawyers

  82. are the only ones who can understand what's in there, right?

  83. It must be how they keep the racket going

  84. and keep the bills getting charged.

  85. If any of you are lawyers, I apologize only slightly.

  86. But all of this legalese, if you will,

  87. like, I'd like to think of myself as a fairly smart individual, right?

  88. That I understand what the words mean.

  89. I can look at words in a sentence and put those together

  90. and try to make sense of it.

  91. I can read those words.

  92. I can tell you what they mean.

  93. But when they're put together in this way,

  94. on this kind of document,

  95. they just make my brain want to shut down.

  96. I don't want to read it anymore.

  97. And sometimes it's a little bit like these parables,

  98. that you can read the words.

  99. You know what the words mean.

  100. You can see what it's saying,

  101. but the meaning is harder to see.

  102. And so for the contract,

  103. I have to lean on and trust in the lawyers,

  104. my lawyer, to explain what it's saying.

  105. And then they're actually able to use plain language

  106. so that I can understand.

  107. And they help me see what it says.

  108. And without their help, I can't understand anything.

  109. And part of what these parables are doing

  110. and what they're saying is

  111. that you won't be able to understand these on your own.

  112. That's not the intention.

  113. You need an interpreter.

  114. And you need the Spirit of God

  115. to make these things clear.

  116. And so what we'll see today

  117. is Jesus is telling the crowd what's coming.

  118. This is what these parables are.

  119. He's saying in these parables,

  120. what we'll see is that the kingdom of God

  121. is being revealed.

  122. And though it may not always look promising,

  123. it will gloriously prevail in the end.

  124. And so let's look at each of these parables.

  125. The first parable is this lamp on the stand.

  126. It says, Jesus asked,

  127. do you bring in a lamp

  128. and you put it under a bowl or a bed?

  129. No, instead, don't you put it on a stand?

  130. And he explains that whatever is hidden

  131. is meant to be disclosed

  132. and whatever is concealed

  133. is meant to be brought out into the open.

  134. And he adds, if anyone has ears to hear,

  135. let him hear.

  136. And so this parable, in this parable,

  137. Jesus is talking about himself.

  138. Jesus is the lamp.

  139. Jesus is the light.

  140. And we see this in other places

  141. where Jesus is talking about himself.

  142. In John chapter 8, Jesus says,

    John 8 chapter mention

  143. I am the light of the world.

  144. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,

  145. but will have the light of life.

  146. And so what he's saying is that

  147. something is being initiated in his coming.

  148. It's a prophecy about what he has come to do.

  149. Jesus is saying,

  150. don't you realize the light has come?

  151. That God has sent his lamp into the world

  152. and this lamp is Jesus.

  153. He's the word of God.

  154. Literally the way we can understand God.

  155. Right?

  156. In the same way that we use words

  157. to articulate a thought or an idea,

  158. God is articulated to us in Jesus.

  159. Right?

  160. This Jesus in whom all the treasures of wisdom

  161. and knowledge are hidden.

  162. We don't understand what God is doing

  163. until Jesus.

  164. Right?

  165. The religious leaders of the day,

  166. they thought they understood what God was doing.

  167. They thought they had an idea of it.

  168. And so when they saw Jesus,

  169. they rejected him.

  170. The disciples thought they understood

  171. what God was doing.

  172. They thought they understood why Jesus was there.

  173. But when Jesus would predict his death,

  174. they couldn't comprehend what he was up to.

  175. God's plans had been hidden.

  176. But now,

  177. in Jesus,

  178. they're being brought into light.

  179. Just a couple chapters earlier in Mark 1,

  180. Jesus comes into Galilee,

  181. proclaiming the good news of God

  182. by saying,

  183. the time has come.

  184. The kingdom of God is near.

  185. Repent.

  186. Repent.

  187. And believe.

  188. And this is the beginning of the revelation of the gospel,

  189. that the light has come,

  190. that the king has come to bring his kingdom.

  191. And God will continue in that work

  192. until all the truths of the gospel

  193. and all the mysteries of the gospel

  194. have been revealed.

  195. And through the life of Jesus,

  196. the truths are being uncovered.

  197. And in his death,

  198. in his death,

  199. God's true purposes are being revealed.

  200. And in the work of the Spirit

  201. through the apostles,

  202. what he had done was brought into clarity.

  203. Right?

  204. This is what we have

  205. in the books from Romans to Revelation.

  206. It's God fulfilling the promise of understanding

  207. and fully uncovering

  208. the lamp of understanding.

  209. And the lamp that's pictured in this parable,

  210. the lamp of the Spirit of Christ,

  211. it still operates.

  212. He still teaches.

  213. He still unfolds the mysteries of God to us.

  214. And he's come to unfold them

  215. so that we might understand,

  216. we might see him clearly.

  217. And that,

  218. so the veil would be lifted

  219. and that we can worship him.

  220. And so how do you respond to that?

  221. First you listen,

  222. it says,

  223. let him hear.

  224. And then you respond.

  225. See, the reality is,

  226. some will hear Jesus teaching

  227. and they'll seek to understand.

  228. And those are the ones described

  229. as the good soil in the chapter just before,

  230. the passage just before.

  231. And for those who seek to understand,

  232. God will give understanding.

  233. But some will hear Jesus' teaching

  234. and they won't seek to understand.

  235. And they won't be bothered.

  236. Right?

  237. As we saw previously,

  238. for some,

  239. it's the pleasures of the world

  240. that keep them from understanding.

  241. For some,

  242. it's the worries of the world

  243. that keep them from seeking.

  244. For some,

  245. it's the trouble and persecution

  246. that come from the world

  247. that keep us from seeking.

  248. And for some,

  249. it's the hardness of their heart

  250. that keeps us from hearing it all.

  251. Look, what it says here is,

  252. pay attention to what you hear.

  253. With the measure you use,

  254. it will be measured to you.

  255. Right?

  256. In your kitchen,

  257. I imagine we're all the same here.

  258. In your kitchen,

  259. you have a variety of measuring tools.

  260. I brought one.

  261. This is the smallest one I could find.

  262. It's one quarter teaspoon.

  263. It's a very tiny amount.

  264. And this one isn't in my kitchen.

  265. But this one's really large.

  266. This is a 30 liter jug.

  267. Right?

  268. And what Jesus is saying here

  269. is that if you seek

  270. one quarter teaspoon of understanding,

  271. then you'll receive

  272. one quarter teaspoon of understanding.

  273. But if you seek

  274. a 30 liter jug of understanding,

  275. God promises to give you

  276. a 30 liter jug of understanding.

  277. Right?

  278. Do you see that?

  279. This is a theme in Mark.

  280. It's happened already

  281. and it will carry on.

  282. But faith in God

  283. is not an intellectual exercise.

  284. Faith is an active thing

  285. that you have to step into.

  286. And if I grab a hold

  287. of the understanding

  288. that I have now

  289. and I live

  290. in the basis of the gospel,

  291. and as I do that,

  292. God continues

  293. to mature me.

  294. He continues

  295. to open my mind

  296. to the things

  297. that I didn't understand before.

  298. And he continues

  299. to grow me

  300. in knowledge

  301. of what his word

  302. is saying.

  303. And the one

  304. who uses it,

  305. more will be given.

  306. And the one

  307. who doesn't listen,

  308. doesn't hear,

  309. what even he has

  310. will be taken away.

  311. Sounds harsh at first,

  312. doesn't it?

  313. But actually,

  314. it's not as harsh

  315. as it initially sounds.

  316. Because what do we know?

  317. We know that everything

  318. that we have,

  319. our possessions,

  320. our success,

  321. our position,

  322. our status,

  323. our notoriety,

  324. even our health

  325. and our vibrancy,

  326. right?

  327. Everything we have

  328. will be taken away

  329. at some point.

  330. For the unbeliever

  331. and for the believer,

  332. right?

  333. Everything will be taken away,

  334. but the knowledge

  335. and the understanding

  336. and our faith

  337. in Jesus Christ.

  338. And those

  339. who hold that,

  340. it says,

  341. everything will be given.

  342. Right?

  343. As Jesus promised,

  344. he says,

  345. ask and it will be given to you.

  346. To the one who seeks,

  347. and you will find,

  348. knock and the door

  349. will be opened to you.

  350. For everyone who asks,

  351. receives.

  352. And the one who seeks,

  353. finds.

  354. And to the one who knocks,

  355. the door will be opened.

  356. So maybe you're here today

  357. and you aren't quite sure

  358. what you believe.

  359. Maybe there's something

  360. about God,

  361. something about the Bible

  362. that you find hard,

  363. that you're not quite sure

  364. how to trust,

  365. how to put your faith

  366. in the God

  367. you think you see

  368. in that.

  369. The question is,

  370. have you asked him

  371. to understand?

  372. Have you asked him

  373. to help you understand?

  374. God says,

  375. he promises,

  376. whatever is hidden

  377. is meant to be disclosed.

  378. It's not meant

  379. to be hidden from you.

  380. It's not meant

  381. to be a secret.

  382. He wants to show you.

  383. He wants to reveal it to you.

  384. Maybe you are a Christian

  385. here today.

  386. Maybe you genuinely believe,

  387. but there are things

  388. that seem murky,

  389. or not quite sure

  390. how to make sense

  391. of that bit

  392. or this bit.

  393. Right?

  394. There are things

  395. that if you're pressed

  396. on them,

  397. you might struggle

  398. to articulate

  399. to someone

  400. and you might keep you

  401. from wanting to explain

  402. that to a friend.

  403. Ask God to reveal them

  404. to you.

  405. He certainly wants to.

  406. His intention is

  407. not for things

  408. to be hidden.

  409. He wants to show you.

  410. It would please him

  411. deeply

  412. for you to ask him.

  413. And so the kingdom

  414. is at hand.

  415. The light of the world

  416. has come.

  417. And he is ready

  418. to reveal what the kingdom

  419. will be like.

  420. And so we hear,

  421. as Jesus continues

  422. in the next parable

  423. of the growing seed,

  424. he states,

  425. this is what

  426. the kingdom of God

  427. is like.

  428. A man scatters seed

  429. on the ground.

  430. Night and day,

  431. whether he sleeps

  432. or gets up,

  433. the seed sprouts

  434. and grows,

  435. though he does not

  436. know how.

  437. The soil produces

  438. grain on its own.

  439. First the stalk,

  440. then the head,

  441. and then finally

  442. the full kernel.

  443. And when the grain

  444. is ripe,

  445. the man puts the sickle

  446. to it,

  447. and the harvest has come.

  448. See, this parable

  449. is about the kingdom

  450. of God.

  451. The kingdom that

  452. was ushered in

  453. as Jesus is the lamp

  454. into the world.

  455. And this shows

  456. what the kingdom

  457. of God is doing.

  458. The fact is,

  459. the kingdom of God

  460. is coming.

  461. And the kingdom

  462. of God is growing.

  463. Whether it looks

  464. like it or not,

  465. even when it feels

  466. like God is distant

  467. or inactive

  468. or asleep,

  469. the seed is growing.

  470. We may not

  471. understand how.

  472. In fact,

  473. we certainly

  474. won't understand how.

  475. But it's producing grain.

  476. And one day,

  477. God will come

  478. and harvest

  479. that ripened crop.

  480. And even today,

  481. I venture to say,

  482. I want the gospel

  483. to be a straight line,

  484. a linear path

  485. with no curves

  486. or unexpected turns.

  487. I want the chart

  488. of faith

  489. to go up

  490. and to the right

  491. forever.

  492. You're right.

  493. But we know

  494. from life

  495. it's not like that.

  496. We know from the Bible

  497. that's not how it works.

  498. We struggle

  499. in our relationships

  500. as they go

  501. through ups and downs,

  502. sometimes growing

  503. healthily

  504. and other times

  505. it's a real challenge.

  506. We struggle

  507. with our children

  508. or grandchildren

  509. or nieces

  510. and nephews.

  511. They grow

  512. and we might see

  513. glimpses of maturity

  514. and maybe even faith

  515. in them

  516. and then other times

  517. it seems like

  518. they're on a path

  519. that we have no idea

  520. how they got there.

  521. We struggle with it

  522. as we share

  523. or try to share

  524. the gospel

  525. with our friends.

  526. Sometimes they seem

  527. eager to hear

  528. and they're accepting

  529. of our invitation

  530. and sometimes

  531. it's like speaking

  532. to a wall.

  533. We struggle with it

  534. as we look at our church.

  535. Sometimes there are times

  536. of growth

  537. and health

  538. and other times

  539. it seems stagnant

  540. and tired.

  541. we struggle

  542. as we look

  543. at the surrounding world.

  544. More often than not

  545. it seems like

  546. the culture

  547. is careening off

  548. into an abyss.

  549. We wonder

  550. if all of this planting

  551. is actually doing

  552. anything at all.

  553. If the seed

  554. that we put in the soil

  555. will ever grow.

  556. If we'll ever

  557. look at the soil

  558. and see that bright

  559. green shoot

  560. popping up

  561. above the surface.

  562. Or was it just

  563. a waste of time

  564. and energy?

  565. The temptation

  566. for us

  567. is this.

  568. We might feel

  569. like we need

  570. to do something.

  571. Let me say that again.

  572. We might feel

  573. like we need

  574. to do something.

  575. We try to somehow

  576. manipulate the results.

  577. Like a novice gardener

  578. says maybe we should

  579. dig it back up

  580. and put the seeds

  581. in a different way.

  582. Maybe we should

  583. massage them a little bit.

  584. Maybe they're not

  585. quite ready.

  586. Maybe we should put

  587. just a bit more water

  588. on top.

  589. Maybe a little bit more.

  590. Maybe a little bit more.

  591. It doesn't work,

  592. does it?

  593. And there's a tendency

  594. in the church

  595. to look at the results.

  596. To be centered

  597. and focused

  598. on the results.

  599. And if we aren't

  600. getting the results

  601. we want

  602. or think we should,

  603. we tend to think

  604. that we need

  605. to do something.

  606. Maybe we need

  607. something that will

  608. be more attractive

  609. to people

  610. who don't know

  611. the gospel yet.

  612. Maybe we aren't

  613. being clear enough

  614. about sin

  615. and punishment.

  616. Maybe if a famous

  617. person or someone

  618. that people

  619. generally like

  620. would come to faith

  621. that would help

  622. people really

  623. understand.

  624. Maybe we need

  625. different music

  626. or we should sing

  627. different songs.

  628. Maybe we should

  629. stand here or there.

  630. Maybe we should

  631. go longer or shorter.

  632. Maybe we should

  633. start earlier or later.

  634. All of that,

  635. it's forgetting

  636. our place.

  637. It's forgetting

  638. our role.

  639. It's forgetting

  640. our job.

  641. Because our job

  642. is to plant.

  643. Our job is

  644. to plant the seed

  645. and you see

  646. what it says here

  647. about the farmer?

  648. It's really humbling

  649. actually because

  650. it says this,

  651. he sleeps and rises

  652. night and day

  653. and the seed

  654. sprouts and grows

  655. and he has no idea

  656. how.

  657. He has nothing

  658. to do with the

  659. growth of the plant.

  660. All he did was

  661. plant it in the soil

  662. and wait

  663. because the earth

  664. produces it by itself.

  665. Once you've planted

  666. the seed,

  667. you've done your job,

  668. everything else

  669. belongs to the Lord.

  670. Why is it that

  671. sometimes someone

  672. will respond

  673. and another person

  674. right next to them

  675. hearing the same words,

  676. the same presentation

  677. of the gospel

  678. won't respond?

  679. Why is it that

  680. some people's growth

  681. seems rapid

  682. and others

  683. seem to grow

  684. so slowly?

  685. Why is it that

  686. some churches

  687. seem to grow

  688. in numbers

  689. and explode

  690. in fruitfulness

  691. and others

  692. remain small?

  693. These are the

  694. mysteries of the

  695. kingdom of God.

  696. We're looking

  697. at the soil

  698. and wondering,

  699. is there ever

  700. going to be a shoot

  701. here?

  702. Is it ever going

  703. to grow?

  704. How is this

  705. going to work?

  706. And so it's

  707. really important

  708. that we know

  709. our place,

  710. that we plant

  711. the seed

  712. and God grows

  713. the harvest.

  714. Right?

  715. You don't have

  716. to hold the

  717. harvest on

  718. your shoulders.

  719. We don't have

  720. to put it on us.

  721. It's not on us.

  722. Right?

  723. Parents,

  724. you have no

  725. capacity whatsoever

  726. to produce belief

  727. in your children.

  728. Grandparents,

  729. the same.

  730. Right?

  731. You can't do it.

  732. Friends,

  733. you have no

  734. capacity to

  735. produce belief

  736. in the friend

  737. or colleague

  738. that you wish

  739. so much

  740. to come to

  741. faith.

  742. You have

  743. no ability.

  744. I have no

  745. ability.

  746. Steve has no

  747. ability to argue

  748. a person into

  749. the kingdom of

  750. God.

  751. That's not how

  752. it works.

  753. So we have

  754. to know our

  755. place and we

  756. have to trust

  757. in God to do

  758. what he has

  759. promised to do.

  760. It's not that

  761. we don't know

  762. what's going to

  763. happen.

  764. We actually know

  765. he's promised

  766. to do the work

  767. and so we can

  768. trust him to do

  769. it.

  770. Because even

  771. the harvest

  772. of our own

  773. hearts,

  774. God is still

  775. working.

  776. There's no

  777. moment where

  778. hope is lost,

  779. when it's been

  780. too long,

  781. you've come

  782. too many times

  783. and it just

  784. hasn't clicked

  785. yet.

  786. That's not

  787. how it goes.

  788. Even when it

  789. doesn't feel

  790. like it,

  791. God has been

  792. working to

  793. bring you to

  794. him.

  795. Wherever you

  796. are, if you've

  797. been a believer

  798. for a long

  799. time, if you've

  800. been a believer

  801. for a week

  802. or a day,

  803. there was a

  804. moment at which

  805. you thought,

  806. I don't know,

  807. it doesn't make

  808. sense.

  809. And then God,

  810. in his timing,

  811. brought you to

  812. him.

  813. Maybe you've

  814. heard about

  815. Jesus before.

  816. Maybe you've

  817. sat in these

  818. seats for weeks

  819. and weeks

  820. and weeks

  821. and it hasn't

  822. ever quite

  823. sunk in.

  824. it's never

  825. made sense.

  826. The reality

  827. is today could

  828. be the day

  829. of harvest

  830. for you.

  831. Today could

  832. be the day

  833. where you

  834. realize that

  835. you've been

  836. trying to

  837. make sense

  838. of the world

  839. on your

  840. own,

  841. but you

  842. need Jesus

  843. to bring

  844. the understanding

  845. that only

  846. he can give.

  847. he's growing

  848. the kingdom.

  849. We don't

  850. know how

  851. and we

  852. don't need

  853. to.

  854. But we do

  855. know that

  856. one day

  857. the harvest

  858. will come

  859. and it

  860. will be

  861. massive.

  862. And what

  863. we see in

  864. the final

  865. parable here

  866. in Mark

  867. is that

  868. this parable

  869. of the

  870. mustard seed

  871. where Jesus

  872. asks,

  873. what shall

  874. we say

  875. then the

  876. kingdom

  877. is like?

  878. He compares

  879. it to a

  880. mustard seed,

  881. the smallest

  882. of all the

  883. seeds on

  884. earth.

  885. And yet

  886. when planted

  887. it grows

  888. and becomes

  889. the largest

  890. of all

  891. the garden

  892. plants,

  893. with branches

  894. big enough

  895. for birds

  896. to perch

  897. in its

  898. shade.

  899. The kingdom

  900. of God,

  901. once small,

  902. is destined

  903. to grow

  904. into something

  905. mighty.

  906. The funny

  907. thing is

  908. at the time

  909. that Jesus

  910. spoke these

  911. words,

  912. there was

  913. no established

  914. church to

  915. speak of.

  916. He only

  917. had a small

  918. group of

  919. followers.

  920. This little

  921. band of

  922. followers,

  923. and as

  924. we know

  925. looking back

  926. because we

  927. can read

  928. it,

  929. that it

  930. would shrink

  931. even further

  932. and that

  933. the crowds

  934. that once

  935. listened to

  936. him,

  937. they would

  938. fall away.

  939. Even the

  940. disciples would

  941. cower in

  942. fear and

  943. deny Jesus

  944. even to a

  945. little girl.

  946. And all

  947. of the

  948. kingdom,

  949. all of

  950. God's

  951. kingdom at

  952. the moment

  953. of the

  954. cross is

  955. literally

  956. just one

  957. man,

  958. one man

  959. called

  960. Jesus,

  961. hung on

  962. the cross.

  963. And at

  964. that moment,

  965. wouldn't it

  966. be tempting

  967. to think,

  968. is this it?

  969. Is this

  970. the kingdom?

  971. Is this

  972. the kingdom

  973. that you

  974. promised

  975. Jesus?

  976. Is this

  977. what it's

  978. going to

  979. be?

  980. Maybe you

  981. felt that

  982. way.

  983. You know,

  984. if you

  985. look around

  986. this city

  987. that we

  988. live in,

  989. if you

  990. listen to

  991. the news

  992. that you

  993. see every

  994. day,

  995. does it

  996. look like

  997. you that

  998. the kingdom

  999. is gloriously

  1000. expanding?

  1001. Here in

  1002. northwest

  1003. London,

  1004. where there

  1005. is the

  1006. lowest

  1007. proportion of

  1008. gospel

  1009. preaching

  1010. churches

  1011. in all

  1012. of London,

  1013. it's easy

  1014. to look

  1015. around the

  1016. room and

  1017. say,

  1018. well,

  1019. it's just

  1020. us.

  1021. This little

  1022. group of

  1023. people,

  1024. is this

  1025. it?

  1026. See,

  1027. from that

  1028. tiny mustard

  1029. seed,

  1030. the plant

  1031. will grow

  1032. until it

  1033. becomes the

  1034. largest of

  1035. all the

  1036. plants.

  1037. And the

  1038. growth,

  1039. it might

  1040. be

  1041. imperceptible.

  1042. For years

  1043. and years,

  1044. you can't

  1045. tell anything

  1046. is happening,

  1047. but it

  1048. is.

  1049. And we

  1050. can take

  1051. hope in

  1052. the knowledge

  1053. that the

  1054. kingdom

  1055. will

  1056. ultimately

  1057. prevail.

  1058. Jesus

  1059. says,

  1060. let me

  1061. tell you

  1062. something.

  1063. From what

  1064. seems like

  1065. the lowest

  1066. of all

  1067. moments,

  1068. from the

  1069. absolute

  1070. devastation

  1071. of hope

  1072. at my

  1073. own

  1074. death,

  1075. he says,

  1076. in three

  1077. days I

  1078. will rebuild

  1079. this temple.

  1080. The brilliant

  1081. glory of the

  1082. resurrection

  1083. will come,

  1084. and out of

  1085. this small

  1086. band of

  1087. followers,

  1088. is going

  1089. to come

  1090. a kingdom.

  1091. A kingdom

  1092. that will

  1093. spread from

  1094. the east

  1095. to the west,

  1096. from the

  1097. north to

  1098. the south,

  1099. and it

  1100. will transform

  1101. the world

  1102. as we

  1103. know it.

  1104. And beyond.

  1105. Because one

  1106. day,

  1107. every knee

  1108. will bow.

  1109. And one

  1110. day,

  1111. every tongue

  1112. will confess

  1113. that Jesus

  1114. is Lord.

  1115. And it

  1116. will be a

  1117. worldwide,

  1118. eternity-wide

  1119. kingdom.

  1120. kingdom.

  1121. And Jesus

  1122. says,

  1123. listen,

  1124. my kingdom

  1125. will come.

  1126. My will

  1127. will be

  1128. done on

  1129. earth as

  1130. it is in

  1131. heaven.

  1132. Amen?

  1133. I want to

  1134. be part of

  1135. that kingdom.

  1136. And the

  1137. beauty of

  1138. the gospel

  1139. of Jesus

  1140. Christ is

  1141. that we

  1142. can.

  1143. Because of

  1144. Jesus,

  1145. because this

  1146. Jesus came

  1147. into the

  1148. world as

  1149. the lamp

  1150. to bring

  1151. light and

  1152. understanding,

  1153. namely the

  1154. understanding

  1155. that we

  1156. could not

  1157. enter that

  1158. kingdom on

  1159. our own.

  1160. That there's

  1161. no way.

  1162. And that we

  1163. would need a

  1164. savior.

  1165. And in a

  1166. completely

  1167. unexpected,

  1168. unplanned,

  1169. something we

  1170. could not

  1171. fathom,

  1172. in this

  1173. crazy turn

  1174. of events,

  1175. the king

  1176. of this

  1177. kingdom

  1178. gives

  1179. himself

  1180. as the

  1181. sacrifice,

  1182. as the

  1183. payment,

  1184. as the

  1185. ticket to

  1186. open the

  1187. gates to

  1188. the city.

  1189. And to

  1190. let you

  1191. and let

  1192. me in.

  1193. And all

  1194. it takes

  1195. is a

  1196. little

  1197. faith.

  1198. Even

  1199. faith the

  1200. size of

  1201. a tiny

  1202. mustard

  1203. seed.

  1204. Mark

  1205. concludes

  1206. by stating

  1207. that Jesus

  1208. spoke in

  1209. many

  1210. parables.

  1211. And that

  1212. he spoke

  1213. the word

  1214. to them

  1215. as much

  1216. as they

  1217. could

  1218. understand,

  1219. and he

  1220. didn't

  1221. say anything

  1222. to them

  1223. without using

  1224. these

  1225. parables.

  1226. Right?

  1227. Interestingly,

  1228. despite the

  1229. stories and

  1230. the teachings

  1231. that you

  1232. read,

  1233. that Jesus

  1234. shared,

  1235. many,

  1236. including the

  1237. disciples,

  1238. didn't fully

  1239. understand at

  1240. the time.

  1241. They were

  1242. there with

  1243. him,

  1244. they heard it

  1245. from his

  1246. mouth,

  1247. but they

  1248. didn't

  1249. understand.

  1250. They

  1251. needed

  1252. Jesus to

  1253. explain the

  1254. parables to

  1255. them.

  1256. Just as we

  1257. need the

  1258. Spirit of

  1259. God to

  1260. open our

  1261. minds and

  1262. help us to

  1263. comprehend his

  1264. teachings.

  1265. And the

  1266. parables sort

  1267. of act like a

  1268. filter for the

  1269. crowds that

  1270. might follow

  1271. Jesus.

  1272. Right?

  1273. then and

  1274. now.

  1275. They would

  1276. be,

  1277. they would

  1278. blind,

  1279. the parables

  1280. would blind

  1281. the eyes of

  1282. those who

  1283. wouldn't

  1284. believe.

  1285. And they

  1286. would put

  1287. deep questions

  1288. in the hearts

  1289. of those who

  1290. would believe.

  1291. But Jesus

  1292. would explain

  1293. it to them.

  1294. And the

  1295. Spirit will

  1296. explain it to

  1297. you.

  1298. And the

  1299. question is,

  1300. will you

  1301. ever understand?

  1302. Yes,

  1303. we will

  1304. understand.

  1305. There will

  1306. be a day

  1307. when we can

  1308. look back

  1309. and we can

  1310. say,

  1311. God,

  1312. now I

  1313. understand

  1314. your plan.

  1315. Now I

  1316. understand what

  1317. you were

  1318. doing all

  1319. this time.

  1320. It all

  1321. makes sense

  1322. now.

  1323. When I was

  1324. going through

  1325. that challenge

  1326. and I

  1327. couldn't see

  1328. it because

  1329. I was stuck

  1330. in the

  1331. middle,

  1332. now it's

  1333. all been

  1334. made clear.

  1335. When I

  1336. couldn't make

  1337. sense of

  1338. that circumstance

  1339. that I found

  1340. myself in and

  1341. I didn't

  1342. understand what

  1343. you were

  1344. doing,

  1345. I needed

  1346. understanding and

  1347. now you've

  1348. opened my

  1349. eyes.

  1350. I

  1351. see how

  1352. you are

  1353. the lamp

  1354. and that

  1355. you're

  1356. bringing

  1357. light and

  1358. you don't

  1359. want your

  1360. light to

  1361. be hidden.

  1362. I believe

  1363. that you're

  1364. at work

  1365. even when

  1366. I can't

  1367. tell and

  1368. when I

  1369. can't see

  1370. the shoot

  1371. out of the

  1372. soil,

  1373. even if it

  1374. doesn't look

  1375. like it.

  1376. And that

  1377. your kingdom

  1378. grows without

  1379. your help,

  1380. without our

  1381. help,

  1382. without my

  1383. help.

  1384. I trust

  1385. that your

  1386. kingdom will

  1387. grow and

  1388. that in

  1389. time your

  1390. will will

  1391. ultimately be

  1392. done.

  1393. And that

  1394. your promises

  1395. will come

  1396. true.

  1397. And that

  1398. the sad

  1399. things of

  1400. this earth

  1401. and this

  1402. life will

  1403. come untrue.

  1404. So like

  1405. the man

  1406. who looks

  1407. at Jesus,

  1408. he says,

  1409. Lord,

  1410. I do

  1411. believe.

  1412. We do

  1413. believe.

  1414. Please help

  1415. our unbelief.

  1416. Shall we

  1417. pray?

  1418. Just quietly

  1419. take a moment

  1420. to pray

  1421. silently where

  1422. you are.

  1423. Ask the

  1424. Lord for

  1425. understanding

  1426. something that

  1427. he's put on

  1428. your heart

  1429. in this

  1430. moment.

  1431. And

  1432. you

  1433. Thank you.

1434. For how you have sown the seeds to implant in our hearts that we might grow to know you.

1435. Thank you for sending Jesus to be the lamp to illuminate our hearts and minds to reveal the true purposes of your kingdom.

  1436. We praise you.

1437. That even when we can't see, we can't understand how you're working, that you never sleep nor slumber.

1438. And that through it all you're working to bring the kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.

1439. And God, we look forward to the kingdom of heaven.

1440. That we might spend eternity with you and that our hope would be fully realized.

1441. And we might spend our days bringing you glory and enjoying you forever.

1442. Thank you, Lord Jesus, we pray. Amen.

  1443. Amen.

  1444. Amen.

  1445. Amen.
