  1. So we're looking this evening in the first of two parts on humility.

  2. So over the next few months, we're going to be looking at different aspects of Christian character.

  3. And we are starting with humility.

  4. And we're starting there for a reason.

  5. And we're going to spend two weeks there for a reason as well.

  6. And that is, I think, because of the central importance of humility

  7. and how it relates to Christian character in general.

  8. There was a guy called Andrew Murray,

  9. not Andy Murray, the tennis player, but Andrew Murray, the theologian.

  10. He was writing at the turn of the 20th century on a little book called Humility.

  11. It's a real gem of a book.

  12. And he says this about humility.

  13. And you kind of have to get your way into thinking the kind of way these guys write.

  14. OK, so it might take a little bit of time, but we've got a few quotes from Andrew Murray this evening.

  15. So you will get into it by the end of the evening.

  16. He says this.

  17. Humility is the only soil in which the grace is root.

  18. The lack of humility is the sufficient explanation of every defect and failure.

  19. Humility is not so much a grace or virtue along with the others.

  20. It is the root of all because it alone takes the right attitude before God and allows him as God to do all.

  21. Now, that might not be the kind of language that we might use.

  22. But his point is that humility is where everything else about Christian character grows out of.

  23. Humility is so central to our Christian lives that it is the grounds on which everything else grows.

  24. And saying as well that everything that we don't do right is coming essentially from pride.

  25. Now, maybe you think he's overstating it, but let me just try and prove it to you briefly just by the sheer weight of the topic in the Bible.

  26. My concordance tells me that the word humble appears in the Bible 2,341 times.

  27. On top of that, you could add all the condemnations of pride and you could add the words like meek or lowly.

  28. And what you find is that humility is a massive theme.

  29. Let me just track through with a few passages.

  30. I'm not going to turn to them, but hopefully they'll ring a bell.

  31. But humility or learning humility is given by God as the reason for the wilderness journey of the people of Israel.

  32. In other words, God thought it so important that it worth 40 years wandering in the desert just to teach it.

  33. In 2 Samuel 22, verse 28, I think it's wrong on your handout.

    2 Samuel 22:28

  34. It's actually 28 or 26.

  35. David summarizes his experience of the Lord as being the one who saves the humble and condemns the proud.

  36. In other words, humility is the outstanding marker of the people that God saves.

  37. It is the thing that God is looking for.

  38. It's a constant theme in Kings and Chronicles as kings refuse humbling from the hand of the Lord or less frequently do humble themselves before the Lord, like Hezekiah.

  39. It's the rise and the fall of the nations as they variously recognize and refuse to recognize who they are before God.

  40. Psalms alone speak of humility or better sing of humility regularly.

  41. Psalm 25, verse 9, we're told that God, He leads the humble in what is right and teaches the humble His way.

    Psalms 25:9

  42. Towards the end of the Old Testament, the great intellect Daniel, who has risen to significant power in the nation of Babylon,

  43. is commended not for his status or his influence or even the great achievements of his life, but is commended for his humility.

  44. Micah tells us famously that humility is what God requires from His people.

  45. If you jump into the New Testament, we're told that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was humble in Luke 1, 48.

  46. We're told by Jesus that everyone who exalts himself, they will be humbled.

  47. He says the same thing three times.

  48. Then in Matthew's Gospel, we're told that it is humble, childlike faith which saves.

  49. James 4, verse 6, riffs off the Old Testament and Psalms saying again that God gives grace to the humble but opposes the proud.

    James 4:6

  50. And then in 1 Peter 5, you get this great verse,

  51. humble yourselves therefore under God's mighty hand that He may lift you up in due time.

  52. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.

  53. You know those things go together, don't they?

  54. Humbling yourselves under the mighty hand of God is casting all your anxiety on Him.

  55. It is handing it over to Him humbly before Him.

  56. And on top of all of that, and maybe most significantly of all,

  57. we are told over and over about the humility of Christ,

  58. that the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.

  59. God the Eternal Son, leaving the glories of heaven,

  60. revealing Himself in what is by definition humility,

  61. stooping even to die on a cross,

  62. not for His own sin but for the sin of others.

  63. Humbling Himself, becoming obedient to death,

  64. even the death on a cross.

  65. Now I'll stop there, but hopefully that's enough to persuade you that humility is important,

  66. that it is the root of the graces,

  67. as Murray puts it at the beginning.

  68. Now given its significance in the Bible,

  69. Murray also has something else important to say.

  70. This is what comes next in his book.

  71. He says,

  72. The call to humility has been too little regarded in the church

  73. because its true nature and importance has been too little apprehended.

  74. That's a better way of saying everyone's too stupid to realize how important humility is, right?

  75. Now I wonder whether you agree with him.

  76. So I want you just with the person next to you to discuss,

  77. do you agree that humility has been little regarded in the church?

  78. Is humility something you've heard about often?

  79. Do you think it's well understood?

  80. Do you think it is preached about much?

  81. Do you read about it much?

  82. That kind of thing.

  83. Talk to the person next to you just for a couple of minutes,

  84. and then we'll bring our answers back together.

  85. Go for it.

  86. Does anyone want to share their answers?

  87. What do we think?

  88. Important topic?

  89. Okay.

  90. Okay.

  91. One that we're familiar with.

  92. We've talked often about this at church.

  93. What do you think?

  94. You're all too humble to offer an answer, aren't you?

  95. This is the truth.

  96. Sorry?

  97. Yeah.

  98. Yes.

  99. Let this mind be yours, which is also in Christ Jesus,

  100. you being in very nature God.

  101. Yeah.

  102. We're often going on about that.

  103. It's kind of so fundamental to Christian life,

  104. how you relate to a child,

  105. how you relate to God,

  106. that you can't overstate it,

  107. and you can't preach it too much.

  108. Yeah.

  109. And so,

  110. as you pointed out,

  111. by the beginning,

  112. it runs through Scripture so much.

  113. Yeah.

  114. Yeah.

  115. You can't preach it too much.

  116. I think the problem we have

  117. is not understanding it.

  118. Yeah.

  119. Yeah.

  120. It's not the sort of cognitive understanding of it,

  121. it's the putting it into practice.

  122. If I was to ask you

  123. how

  124. justification

  125. is

  126. connects with

  127. sanctification,

  128. what would you say?

  129. So,

  130. justification

  131. is the idea that God

  132. declares us not guilty

  133. through Christ's work on the cross.

  134. Sanctification

  135. is about us being made

  136. holy by God.

  137. Do we understand

  138. how those two things

  139. connect together?

  140. Okay.

  141. Christians often think

  142. that God

  143. saves them

  144. by the blood of Jesus

  145. on their behalf.

  146. We are covered

  147. with the righteousness of Christ.

  148. We're justified by Jesus.

  149. And then think,

  150. but I grow as a Christian

  151. by my works

  152. and by my efforts.

  153. Right?

  154. And so,

  155. therefore,

  156. if I'm growing as a Christian

  157. and doing quite well,

  158. it's because I'm working quite well

  159. and I should be quite proud of that.

  160. And so,

  161. we don't grow in humility.

  162. We sort of grow in self-confidence,

  163. pride.

  164. But actually,

  165. the Bible says

  166. those two things go together.

  167. Okay?

  168. So,

  169. our justification

  170. and our sanctification

  171. go together.

  172. They are distinct

  173. from one another,

  174. but you can't separate them apart

  175. because they come together.

  176. So,

  177. we are declared

  178. righteous in the Lord Jesus

  179. and we are made holy

  180. by the Holy Spirit.

  181. And the growth

  182. in holiness

  183. as a Christian

  184. is becoming

  185. who I already am

  186. in Christ.

  187. It's the

  188. kind of

  189. taking on

  190. who I am

  191. as my identity

  192. in Christ.

  193. It's becoming

  194. who I will be

  195. or who I already

  196. am in Christ.

  197. And so,

  198. both of those things

  199. are rooted

  200. in the work of Christ.

  201. So,

  202. both of them

  203. are humbling,

  204. right?

  205. Because

  206. to be justified

  207. by faith in Jesus

  208. is to declare

  209. I have nothing

  210. of my own

  211. to offer

  212. to my salvation.

  213. I am trusting

  214. and relying

  215. on Christ alone.

  216. To grow in sanctification

  217. is to say

  218. all I can do

  219. is become

  220. the person

  221. that God

  222. has already

  223. made me to be.

  224. And so,

  225. it's humbling,

  226. right?

  227. And so,

  228. because those

  229. things are

  230. linked together,

  231. being humble

  232. is right at the

  233. heart of the

  234. Christian life.

  235. And so,

  236. growing in humility

  237. is growing

  238. as a Christian.

  239. Now,

  240. generalizations

  241. aren't always

  242. helpful,

  243. but I do think

  244. this one is

  245. helpful.

  246. It belongs to

  247. Andrew Murray

  248. anyway,

  249. not me.

  250. He says that

  251. basically,

  252. the Bible

  253. gives you

  254. three reasons

  255. to be humble.

  256. Firstly,

  257. he says that

  258. you should be

  259. humble because

  260. we are creatures

  261. who did not

  262. create ourselves,

  263. so therefore

  264. we owe

  265. everything of

  266. our existence

  267. to God

  268. himself.

  269. And secondly,

  270. we should be

  271. humble because

  272. we are sinners.

  273. We are people

  274. who have rebelled

  275. against God

  276. and we've

  277. gone our own

  278. way.

  279. And thirdly,

  280. we should be

  281. humble because

  282. we are recipients

  283. of the saving

  284. grace of the

  285. Lord Jesus

  286. Christ.

  287. In other

  288. words,

  289. we are made,

  290. we're not our

  291. own,

  292. we're sinners,

  293. we're rebels,

  294. and we're saved

  295. even though we're

  296. undeserving.

  297. And all those

  298. three things

  299. are humbling.

  300. What I want

  301. to try and

  302. do is take

  303. creation tonight

  304. and then take

  305. sin and

  306. salvation next

  307. Sunday evening

  308. if I can.

  309. So here's the

  310. question for us

  311. this evening.

  312. What does it

  313. mean to be

  314. humble as

  315. creatures?

  316. Joe, just get

  317. yourself a chair.

  318. That's fine.

  319. You stacked

  320. all the chairs

  321. this morning,

  322. Joe, so you

  323. can unstack a

  324. chair for

  325. yourself.

  326. That's right.

  327. In other

  328. words, what is

  329. it about just

  330. being created

  331. outside of any

  332. sin or grace

  333. that means

  334. humility is

  335. right for us.

  336. And to

  337. consider that,

  338. I want us

  339. to look at

  340. Revelation 4.

  341. I think, is it

  342. on your handout?

  343. Revelation 4?

  344. Great.

  345. Let me read

  346. it to you.

  347. After this, I

  348. looked, and

  349. there before me

  350. was a door

  351. standing open

  352. in heaven.

  353. And the

  354. voice I had

  355. first heard

  356. speaking to

  357. me, like a

  358. trumpet, said,

  359. come up here

  360. and I will

  361. show you what

  362. must take

  363. place after

  364. this.

  365. At once, I

  366. was in the

  367. spirit.

  368. And there

  369. before me

  370. was a

  371. throne in

  372. heaven with

  373. someone sitting

  374. on it.

  375. And the

  376. one who sat

  377. there had

  378. the appearance

  379. of jasper

  380. and ruby,

  381. a rainbow

  382. that shone

  383. like an

  384. emerald

  385. encircled

  386. the throne.

  387. Surrounding the

  388. throne were

  389. twenty-four

  390. other thrones

  391. and seated

  392. on them

  393. were twenty-four

  394. elders.

  395. They were

  396. dressed in

  397. white and

  398. had crowns

  399. of gold on

  400. their heads.

  401. From the

  402. throne came

  403. flashes of

  404. lightning,

  405. rumblings and

  406. peals of

  407. thunder.

  408. In front of

  409. the throne

  410. seven lamps

  411. were blazing.

  412. These are the

  413. seven spirits

  414. of God.

  415. Also in front

  416. of the throne

  417. there was what

  418. looked like a

  419. sea of glass

  420. clear as

  421. crystal.

  422. In the

  423. centre around

  424. the throne

  425. were four

  426. living creatures

  427. and they were

  428. covered with

  429. eyes in front

  430. and in back.

  431. The first

  432. living creature

  433. was like a

  434. lion, the

  435. second was

  436. like an ox,

  437. the third had

  438. a face like a

  439. man, the

  440. fourth was like

  441. a flying eagle.

  442. Each of the

  443. four living

  444. creatures had

  445. six wings and

  446. was covered

  447. with eyes all

  448. around, even

  449. under its

  450. wings.

  451. Day and

  452. night they

  453. never stopped

  454. saying,

  455. holy, holy,

  456. holy is the

  457. Lord God

  458. Almighty who

  459. was and is

  460. and is to

  461. come.

  462. Whenever the

  463. living creatures

  464. give glory,

  465. honour and

  466. thanks to him

  467. who sits on

  468. the throne and

  469. who lives

  470. forever and

  471. ever, the

  472. twenty-four

  473. elders fall

  474. down before

  475. him who

  476. sits on

  477. the throne

  478. and worship

  479. him who

  480. lives forever

  481. and ever,

  482. they lay

  483. their crowns

  484. before the

  485. throne and

  486. say, you

  487. are worthy,

  488. O Lord and

  489. God, to

  490. receive glory

  491. and honour

  492. and power,

  493. for you

  494. created all

  495. things and

  496. by your

  497. will they

  498. were created

  499. and have

  500. their being.

  501. Now, we're

  502. not going to

  503. go through all

  504. of that in

  505. extreme detail,

  506. but verse

  507. four tells you,

  508. doesn't it,

  509. that there are

  510. twenty-four

  511. elders around

  512. the throne,

  513. telling us

  514. that they're

  515. clothed in

  516. white garments

  517. with golden

  518. crowns on

  519. their head.

  520. Exactly who

  521. they are is

  522. not super

  523. clear.

  524. Theologians

  525. have taken

  526. lots of

  527. different guesses,

  528. twenty-four

  529. heavenly

  530. priests following

  531. the twenty-four

  532. high priests

  533. of the Old

  534. Testament,

  535. or twelve

  536. Old Testament

  537. tribes plus

  538. twelve

  539. apostles,

  540. or something

  541. else relating

  542. to the

  543. significance of

  544. the white

  545. robes in

  546. pagan culture.

  547. I don't think

  548. that's probably

  549. right.

  550. But which

  551. exactly is,

  552. we're not

  553. sure.

  554. But I'm

  555. not actually

  556. thinking that's

  557. the important

  558. point of the

  559. verses,

  560. because for

  561. the purposes

  562. of the

  563. passage,

  564. who the

  565. elders are

  566. is not

  567. significant.

  568. It's because

  569. of not who

  570. they are,

  571. but because

  572. of what

  573. they're doing,

  574. right?

  575. You have a

  576. look at the

  577. passage.

  578. Notice in

  579. verse eight,

  580. the four living

  581. creatures,

  582. the lion,

  583. the ox,

  584. the man,

  585. and the eagle,

  586. representatives

  587. of the creation,

  588. I think the

  589. four corners

  590. of the earth,

  591. are all caught

  592. up in this

  593. perpetual song

  594. about the

  595. holiness of

  596. God.

  597. Holy,

  598. holy,

  599. holy,

  600. holy,

  601. they sing.

  602. Three times

  603. holy,

  604. set apart

  605. special

  606. difference.

  607. And the

  608. song of

  609. the four

  610. living

  611. creatures

  612. is then

  613. the trigger

  614. for the

  615. action of

  616. the 24

  617. elders,

  618. who on

  619. hearing this

  620. song,

  621. fall down

  622. before the

  623. throne of

  624. God,

  625. worshipping

  626. him in

  627. the song

  628. of verse

  629. 11,

  630. worthy of

  631. you,

  632. O Lord,

  633. to receive

  634. glory and

  635. honour and

  636. power,

  637. for you

  638. created all

  639. things,

  640. and by

  641. your will

  642. they existed

  643. and were

  644. created.

  645. But notice

  646. what they

  647. do as

  648. they worship.

  649. What are

  650. they doing

  651. as they

  652. worship?

  653. What are

  654. they saying?

  655. They fall

  656. down before

  657. the throne

  658. and they

  659. cast their

  660. crowns

  661. before the

  662. throne.

  663. Do you

  664. see this?

  665. Singing of

  666. the worthiness

  667. of the

  668. creator,

  669. or to put

  670. it in the

  671. language of

  672. our topic

  673. this evening,

  674. recognising

  675. the creatureliness

  676. is accompanied

  677. by the

  678. removal of

  679. the crown.

  680. This is

  681. the word

  682. Stephanos in

  683. the Greek

  684. from which

  685. Stephen

  686. comes,

  687. right?

  688. This is the

  689. crown,

  690. not of

  691. royalty,

  692. it's the

  693. crown of

  694. victory,

  695. Olympic

  696. crowns from

  697. the successes

  698. of their

  699. achievements.

  700. And what's

  701. the significance

  702. of this?

  703. This is not

  704. just an act

  705. of deference,

  706. this is not

  707. like donning

  708. your cap

  709. at someone

  710. on your way

  711. into the

  712. pub or

  713. whatever,

  714. it's more

  715. than that.

  716. It is in

  717. the sense

  718. that the

  719. removal of

  720. any sense

  721. of human

  722. victory in

  723. front of

  724. the one

  725. who created

  726. you and

  727. all things.

  728. It's the

  729. recognition,

  730. isn't it,

  731. that the

  732. crown that

  733. is on

  734. their heads

  735. for the

  736. things that

  737. they have

  738. done,

  739. rightly

  740. belongs to

  741. the creator

  742. and not

  743. to them.

  744. Creatures,

  745. just because

  746. they're creatures

  747. understand that

  748. their creator

  749. is the crown

  750. wearer and

  751. not them.

  752. Here's

  753. Murray again.

  754. Humility is

  755. not something

  756. we bring to

  757. God or he

  758. gives to

  759. us.

  760. It is

  761. simply the

  762. sense of

  763. entire

  764. nothingness,

  765. which comes

  766. when we

  767. see how

  768. truly God

  769. is all

  770. and in

  771. which we

  772. make way

  773. for God

  774. to be

  775. all.

  776. Humility

  777. is simply

  778. acknowledging

  779. the truth

  780. of his

  781. position as

  782. creature and

  783. yielding to

  784. God his

  785. place.

  786. You are

  787. God.

  788. I am

  789. not.

  790. Anything I

  791. have achieved

  792. belongs to

  793. you.

  794. All that I

  795. am is

  796. yours.

  797. I have

  798. nothing that

  799. I have not

  800. been given.

  801. I have

  802. no honor

  803. of my

  804. own except

  805. that which

  806. comes from

  807. you as a

  808. gift as

  809. my creator.

  810. So perfect

  811. creatures, and

  812. that's what we

  813. can say of

  814. these 24

  815. elders before

  816. the throne,

  817. perfect

  818. creatures throw

  819. their crowns

  820. before their

  821. creator.

  822. So don't

  823. you think

  824. you should?

  825. They only

  826. ever had the

  827. crown on

  828. alone.

  829. Now, let

  830. me try and

  831. unpack this in

  832. three different

  833. ways.

  834. how do we

  835. see our

  836. creatureliness

  837. before the

  838. creator God?

  839. And we'll

  840. try and deal

  841. with these

  842. reasonably

  843. quickly.

  844. Consider your

  845. creatureliness

  846. in the

  847. aspect of

  848. your

  849. knowledge.

  850. I don't

  851. know if

  852. you're one

  853. of those

  854. people who

  855. likes to

  856. be in

  857. the know.

  858. Are you

  859. someone who

  860. likes to

  861. be in

  862. the know?

  863. You like

  864. to feel

  865. like you

  866. know

  867. stuff and

  868. that you

  869. understand

  870. stuff?

  871. Maybe

  872. you're the

  873. kid in

  874. class who

  875. likes to

  876. have all

  877. the answers.

  878. Is that

  879. right?

  880. Yeah, I

  881. want to be

  882. the one that

  883. people turn

  884. to and that

  885. they think

  886. has got some

  887. knowledge puts

  888. me in a

  889. special

  890. category.

  891. But as

  892. we meet

  893. the creator

  894. in God's

  895. word, we

  896. realise that

  897. he alone is

  898. the one who

  899. knows.

  900. I know

  901. partially.

  902. I know in

  903. a time-bound

  904. way.

  905. He knows

  906. all things.

  907. He is the

  908. gatherer of

  909. the all-seeing

  910. creatures from

  911. all over the

  912. world.

  913. He is the

  914. one who

  915. knows all

  916. things.

  917. Our

  918. partial and

  919. limited

  920. knowledge is

  921. made up of

  922. stuff that

  923. we have

  924. heard or

  925. been given.

  926. All of

  927. our conclusions

  928. about all

  929. things are

  930. provisional.

  931. We have to

  932. recognise that

  933. we might be

  934. wrong.

  935. We might not

  936. know and we

  937. might never

  938. know.

  939. But God's

  940. knowledge is

  941. ultimate.

  942. We know that

  943. the earth spins

  944. around the sun

  945. but God knows

  946. how it does

  947. and why it

  948. does and

  949. sustains it

  950. even as it

  951. does.

  952. And learning

  953. this brings

  954. humility,

  955. doesn't it?

  956. Think about

  957. how little you

  958. know in

  959. relative terms.

  960. How little you

  961. will ever know.

  962. We don't

  963. even really

  964. know ourselves

  965. in any kind

  966. of deep

  967. way, do we?

  968. We know

  969. parts about

  970. ourselves.

  971. God knows

  972. everything about

  973. us.

  974. We don't

  975. know the

  976. future.

  977. We don't

  978. know everything

  979. about the

  980. past.

  981. We are

  982. largely

  983. ignorant about

  984. everything.

  985. Deuteronomy

  986. 29, 29 puts

  987. it like this,

  988. the secret

  989. things that

  990. belong to

  991. the Lord

  992. our God,

  993. but the

  994. things that

  995. are revealed

  996. belong to

  997. us and

  998. our children

  999. forever,

  1000. that we

  1001. may do

  1002. all the

  1003. words of

  1004. this law.

  1005. In other

  1006. words,

  1007. anything that

  1008. you know,

  1009. you know

  1010. because God

  1011. has told

  1012. you and

  1013. he has

  1014. taught you.

  1015. Even those

  1016. who don't

  1017. acknowledge God

  1018. as God,

  1019. all that they

  1020. know, they

  1021. know because

  1022. God has

  1023. taught them

  1024. and told

  1025. them in

  1026. his common

  1027. grace to

  1028. them.

  1029. All the

  1030. treasures of

  1031. wisdom and

  1032. knowledge are

  1033. hidden in

  1034. the Lord

  1035. Jesus

  1036. Christ.

  1037. Yeah.

  1038. And it's

  1039. humbling,

  1040. isn't it?

  1041. It's actually

  1042. brilliant, I

  1043. think.

  1044. You and I

  1045. only know

  1046. what we

  1047. need to

  1048. know and

  1049. we only

  1050. know it

  1051. because God

  1052. has told

  1053. it to

  1054. us.

  1055. Okay, what

  1056. about

  1057. presence?

  1058. Presence.

  1059. So if you

  1060. love to be

  1061. someone who's

  1062. in the

  1063. know,

  1064. that's what

  1065. Anderson's

  1066. like at

  1067. school,

  1068. right?

  1069. I was the

  1070. guy who

  1071. wanted to

  1072. be in the

  1073. thick of

  1074. it at

  1075. school,

  1076. right?

  1077. If there

  1078. was a

  1079. fight,

  1080. I was

  1081. there.

  1082. I wanted

  1083. to know

  1084. what was

  1085. going down,

  1086. right?

  1087. If there

  1088. was a

  1089. kind of

  1090. rumbling

  1091. that something

  1092. was going

  1093. to happen,

  1094. I would

  1095. be there

  1096. just because

  1097. I wanted

  1098. to know

  1099. what was

  1100. going down.

  1101. I did

  1102. not want

  1103. to miss

  1104. out.

  1105. I hated

  1106. missing

  1107. out and

  1108. want to

  1109. be in

  1110. the right

  1111. place at

  1112. the right

  1113. time.

  1114. But our

  1115. creator is

  1116. everywhere

  1117. all the

  1118. time.

  1119. You know

  1120. that only

  1121. too well

  1122. that you

  1123. can only be

  1124. in one

  1125. place at

  1126. one time

  1127. and we

  1128. feel the

  1129. frustration

  1130. of that,

  1131. especially

  1132. when we

  1133. take on

  1134. too much,

  1135. we have

  1136. too much

  1137. going on.

  1138. There's a

  1139. word for

  1140. that frustration

  1141. that comes

  1142. from taking

  1143. on too

  1144. much and

  1145. wanting to

  1146. be in

  1147. every place

  1148. at every

  1149. time.

  1150. You know

  1151. what the

  1152. word is

  1153. for that?

  1154. Begins

  1155. with P,

  1156. ends in

  1157. ride.

  1158. It's

  1159. pride,

  1160. isn't it?

  1161. It's the

  1162. desire to

  1163. be like

  1164. God.

  1165. If only

  1166. I could

  1167. be in

  1168. more than

  1169. one place

  1170. at one

  1171. time.

  1172. If only

  1173. I could

  1174. spread

  1175. myself out

  1176. more broadly

  1177. than I

  1178. can.

  1179. But we

  1180. come before

  1181. God and

  1182. we throw

  1183. down,

  1184. don't we?

  1185. We take

  1186. off the

  1187. crown of

  1188. any sense

  1189. of our

  1190. own presence,

  1191. any sense

  1192. that we're

  1193. in the

  1194. thick of

  1195. the action

  1196. and we

  1197. come before

  1198. God and

  1199. we lay

  1200. it down

  1201. knowing you're

  1202. the omnipresent

  1203. God.

  1204. You're the

  1205. one who

  1206. knows all

  1207. things,

  1208. who is

  1209. in every

  1210. place at

  1211. every

  1212. time.

  1213. We have

  1214. feet of

  1215. clay in

  1216. one particular

  1217. place at

  1218. one particular

  1219. time.

  1220. power.

  1221. Again,

  1222. it's an

  1223. obvious

  1224. point,

  1225. isn't it?

  1226. But it's

  1227. humbling.

  1228. Some of

  1229. us want

  1230. to know

  1231. everything,

  1232. some of

  1233. us want

  1234. to be

  1235. in the

  1236. thick of

  1237. the

  1238. action.

  1239. We all

  1240. want to

  1241. think that

  1242. we can

  1243. do stuff,

  1244. don't we,

  1245. and fix

  1246. things and

  1247. achieve

  1248. things,

  1249. make

  1250. changes,

  1251. push

  1252. forward

  1253. agendas,

  1254. make

  1255. plans.

  1256. But the

  1257. truth is

  1258. we are

  1259. utterly

  1260. helpless.

  1261. We are

  1262. unable to

  1263. achieve

  1264. anything in

  1265. our own

  1266. strength.

  1267. We have

  1268. absolutely

  1269. no idea

  1270. what will

  1271. happen

  1272. tomorrow.

  1273. We've

  1274. got a

  1275. plan that

  1276. there's

  1277. going to

  1278. be a

  1279. holiday

  1280. club here

  1281. tomorrow,

  1282. but we

  1283. have

  1284. absolutely

  1285. no idea,

  1286. do we,

  1287. really,

  1288. whether it's

  1289. going to

  1290. happen,

  1291. whether we'll

  1292. be able to

  1293. achieve it.

  1294. But our

  1295. creator is

  1296. the maker

  1297. and sustainer

  1298. of all

  1299. things.

  1300. He's not

  1301. just the

  1302. watchmaker

  1303. creator who

  1304. kind of

  1305. sets everything

  1306. in motion

  1307. and then just

  1308. kind of

  1309. leaves it and

  1310. lets it get

  1311. on with

  1312. itself.

  1313. Instead,

  1314. it's under

  1315. his power

  1316. in every

  1317. moment of

  1318. every day.

  1319. And he

  1320. holds us

  1321. and sustains

  1322. us.

  1323. It's his

  1324. power that

  1325. makes our

  1326. hearts beat

  1327. and puts

  1328. breath in

  1329. our lungs.

  1330. It's his

  1331. power that

  1332. keeps our

  1333. feet stuck

  1334. to the

  1335. ground,

  1336. the roof

  1337. on this

  1338. building.

  1339. The words

  1340. coming out

  1341. of my

  1342. mouth.

  1343. I am

  1344. just a

  1345. creature and

  1346. I am

  1347. utterly

  1348. helpless

  1349. before his

  1350. power.

  1351. Now,

  1352. we could

  1353. go on,

  1354. couldn't we,

  1355. but let's

  1356. just put

  1357. this together

  1358. for a

  1359. moment.

  1360. We are

  1361. to be

  1362. humble

  1363. because we

  1364. are only

  1365. ever

  1366. creatures.

  1367. So much

  1368. so that the

  1369. crowns that

  1370. we have are

  1371. to be thrown

  1372. down before

  1373. the God

  1374. who really

  1375. owns them.

  1376. So even

  1377. outside of

  1378. talking about

  1379. the humility

  1380. of recognizing

  1381. our sin

  1382. and our

  1383. need of

  1384. salvation,

  1385. we just

  1386. need to

  1387. recognize that

  1388. actually we

  1389. are creatures

  1390. before an

  1391. all-sufficient

  1392. God.

  1393. So if we

  1394. are maybe

  1395. a great

  1396. artist or

  1397. a fantastic

  1398. accountant or

  1399. we are a

  1400. top business

  1401. leader or

  1402. a super

  1403. bright academic

  1404. or a

  1405. brilliant

  1406. preacher,

  1407. whatever it

  1408. is,

  1409. any of those

  1410. things are

  1411. only ours

  1412. because God

  1413. has loaned

  1414. them to

  1415. us.

  1416. They are

  1417. his gifts

  1418. to us,

  1419. snippets of

  1420. knowledge,

  1421. snippets of

  1422. power and

  1423. presence that

  1424. we have.

  1425. They are

  1426. Stephanos crowns

  1427. of victory if

  1428. you like,

  1429. but they're

  1430. not ours,

  1431. they belong

  1432. to him.

  1433. They're given

  1434. to us by

  1435. our creator

  1436. and worshipping

  1437. him involves

  1438. taking the

  1439. crown off

  1440. and laying

  1441. it down

  1442. before him

  1443. and saying

  1444. all that I

  1445. am is

  1446. yours.

  1447. All that I

  1448. am is

  1449. yours.

  1450. Everything

  1451. that I

  1452. have has

  1453. come to

  1454. us from

  1455. you.

  1456. We don't

  1457. present them

  1458. to him

  1459. and plead

  1460. on them,

  1461. do we?

  1462. It's not

  1463. like we

  1464. offer them

  1465. to him.

  1466. Look at

  1467. all these

  1468. great things

  1469. I've done

  1470. Lord.

  1471. It's not

  1472. like that,

  1473. is it?

  1474. It's all

  1475. this was

  1476. yours.

  1477. They were

  1478. never ours

  1479. in the first

  1480. place.

  1481. They belong

  1482. to the one

  1483. who gives

  1484. all good

  1485. things to

  1486. us.

  1487. us.

  1488. I want

  1489. to take

  1490. an

  1491. opportunity

  1492. to take

  1493. questions

  1494. or

  1495. comments.

  1496. So I'll

  1497. give you a

  1498. moment to

  1499. have a

  1500. think and

  1501. a ponder

  1502. and then

  1503. I'll take

  1504. your comments

  1505. and questions

  1506. and then

  1507. we'll sing

  1508. together.

  1509. Anyone got a

  1510. comment or

  1511. a question?

  1512. I'll do my

  1513. shoelaces up

  1514. while you do

  1515. that because

  1516. Vanessa got

  1517. stressed out

  1518. there.

  1519. Is that

  1520. better?

  1521. There you

  1522. go.

  1523. Right.

  1524. I don't

  1525. know how

  1526. both shoelaces

  1527. came undone

  1528. at the same

  1529. time.

  1530. There you

  1531. go.

  1532. Magical.

  1533. Anyone

  1534. got a

  1535. comment or

  1536. a question?

  1537. Yes.

  1538. Yeah.

  1539. Why do some

  1540. people find it

  1541. easier than

  1542. others?

  1543. Do you know,

  1544. that's a good

  1545. question,

  1546. France.

  1547. I'm not,

  1548. I mean,

  1549. maybe we should

  1550. talk about

  1551. this together,

  1552. but I'm not

  1553. sure that,

  1554. I'm not sure

  1555. always that what

  1556. looks like

  1557. humility is

  1558. humility.

  1559. There's a lot

  1560. of frustrated

  1561. pride,

  1562. isn't there,

  1563. in a sort of

  1564. self-pitying,

  1565. oh, I wish I

  1566. was better at

  1567. that.

  1568. When I say,

  1569. oh, it's just,

  1570. I really wish I

  1571. was better at

  1572. that.

  1573. It's more,

  1574. it's frustrated

  1575. pride,

  1576. isn't it?

  1577. It's not

  1578. humility.

  1579. And so,

  1580. I think

  1581. probably some

  1582. of us find

  1583. it easier to

  1584. express pride

  1585. in self-confidence

  1586. and other

  1587. of us feel

  1588. we express

  1589. our pride in

  1590. some kind

  1591. of self-pity,

  1592. don't we?

  1593. Oh, you

  1594. know,

  1595. I'm rubbish.

  1596. Well,

  1597. actually,

  1598. at the

  1599. truth is,

  1600. we're all

  1601. nothing before

  1602. the one who

  1603. created us.

  1604. That's the

  1605. truth of it.

  1606. And everything

  1607. I have and

  1608. all that I

  1609. need will

  1610. come to me

  1611. from him.

  1612. And say,

  1613. that's humility,

  1614. isn't it?

  1615. It's not the

  1616. sort of self-pitying.

  1617. So I think,

  1618. yeah,

  1619. does that make

  1620. sense?

  1621. Go on.

  1622. Feel free,

  1623. go on,

  1624. feel free to

  1625. keep the

  1626. conversation

  1627. going if

  1628. you want

  1629. to come

  1630. back to

  1631. me if

  1632. you like.

  1633. You don't

  1634. have to.

  1635. Someone else?

  1636. Someone else?

  1637. Help me out.

  1638. I think

  1639. sometimes

  1640. the Lord

  1641. teaches us

  1642. humility by

  1643. taking our

  1644. plans away from

  1645. us.

  1646. So I think

  1647. if we want

  1648. to grow

  1649. in humility,

  1650. sometimes we

  1651. think it's

  1652. going to be

  1653. a really

  1654. peaceful

  1655. journey.

  1656. And I

  1657. think sometimes

  1658. it can be

  1659. a really

  1660. painful one.

  1661. I just

  1662. think you

  1663. need to

  1664. not be

  1665. scared of

  1666. that.

  1667. Yeah.

  1668. Because I

  1669. think that's

  1670. a piece

  1671. sometimes you

  1672. can be

  1673. fearful,

  1674. but it's a

  1675. loving,

  1676. creative

  1677. what is your

  1678. father who

  1679. lies behind.

  1680. Yeah.

  1681. You understand

  1682. him better.

  1683. When you

  1684. understand

  1685. his

  1686. creature,

  1687. you're in a

  1688. much better

  1689. place,

  1690. although you

  1691. feel the

  1692. nothing.

  1693. Yeah.

  1694. Yes.

  1695. I'm trying to

  1696. summarize that

  1697. Vanessa.

  1698. Yeah.

  1699. So the

  1700. process of

  1701. learning

  1702. humility is

  1703. painful and

  1704. difficult,

  1705. isn't it?

  1706. Yeah.

  1707. Yeah.

  1708. Yeah.

  1709. Yeah.

  1710. In his

  1711. book,

  1712. Invest Your

  1713. Suffering,

  1714. Paul Mallard

  1715. describes it as

  1716. if God

  1717. gives us a

  1718. load of

  1719. stuff in

  1720. life,

  1721. doesn't he?

  1722. So he might

  1723. give you

  1724. certain abilities,

  1725. he gives you

  1726. certain energy

  1727. levels, he

  1728. might give you

  1729. academic

  1730. qualifications,

  1731. he may give

  1732. you a

  1733. husband or

  1734. a wife,

  1735. he might

  1736. give you

  1737. children.

  1738. And then

  1739. life really

  1740. is about

  1741. giving them

  1742. back.

  1743. You know,

  1744. you suddenly

  1745. lose the

  1746. energy level

  1747. that you

  1748. had.

  1749. You might

  1750. lose a

  1751. child,

  1752. you might

  1753. lose your

  1754. health,

  1755. you might

  1756. lose your

  1757. husband or

  1758. wife,

  1759. you will,

  1760. and you

  1761. will eventually

  1762. lose your

  1763. life.

  1764. And you're

  1765. giving it all

  1766. back to

  1767. the Lord who

  1768. gave you

  1769. all things.

  1770. And the

  1771. more that we

  1772. can live our

  1773. lives knowing

  1774. that that is

  1775. what is

  1776. happening,

  1777. and that all

  1778. things are

  1779. given to us

  1780. by a God

  1781. who loves us

  1782. and is

  1783. generous to

  1784. us, but

  1785. they're not

  1786. ours, the

  1787. more we can

  1788. enjoy them.

  1789. The creature

  1790. who enjoys

  1791. the gifts

  1792. the best is

  1793. not the one

  1794. who thought

  1795. that they

  1796. got them

  1797. themselves,

  1798. but is the

  1799. one who is

  1800. delighting in

  1801. the one who

  1802. gave them

  1803. to them.

  1804. And so

  1805. that's

  1806. Christian

  1807. joy,

  1808. isn't it?

  1809. Yeah.

  1810. So are you

  1811. saying the lack

  1812. of recognition

  1813. that's

  1814. of that joy?

  1815. Yes, a lack

  1816. of recognition

  1817. that all that we

  1818. have comes from

  1819. him robs us

  1820. of joy.

  1821. Not only just

  1822. joy in life

  1823. in general,

  1824. but joy in

  1825. the gift.

  1826. So if I

  1827. think of the

  1828. gift of my

  1829. intellect as

  1830. being

  1831. mine,

  1832. I won't

  1833. enjoy it

  1834. because it

  1835. will be

  1836. sort of

  1837. ultimate to

  1838. me and

  1839. it will

  1840. be

  1841. fractured

  1842. and broken

  1843. and it

  1844. will destroy

  1845. me.

  1846. Yeah.

  1847. Yeah.

  1848. Yeah.

  1849. Yeah.

  1850. Yeah.

  1851. Yeah.

  1852. We have

  1853. to run

  1854. away from

  1855. God

  1856. rather than

  1857. run into

  1858. it.

  1859. Yeah.

  1860. And in

  1861. much distance,

  1862. I was talking

  1863. to someone

  1864. this morning

  1865. and they were

  1866. asking me a

  1867. question and I

  1868. said,

  1869. the highest

  1870. compliment you

  1871. can pay to

  1872. God is to

  1873. be

  1874. obedient.

  1875. Mm-hmm.

  1876. Yes.

  1877. So we

  1878. we pay

  1879. we comment

  1880. God by

  1881. obeying him.

  1882. But as

  1883. long as in

  1884. that sentence

  1885. I'm understanding

  1886. obedience as

  1887. being something

  1888. that I am

  1889. actually only

  1890. doing in the

  1891. strength that

  1892. he gives

  1893. anyway.

  1894. So I'm

  1895. living the

  1896. life that he

  1897. has given

  1898. me for his

  1899. glory,

  1900. recognizing

  1901. that it's

  1902. given to

  1903. me by

  1904. him and

  1905. empowered

  1906. by him.

  1907. Yes.

  1908. Yeah.

1909. that is actually treating ourselves.

1910. And so the lack of humility is sort of at the root

1911. of a very single thing that goes wrong.

1912. All of that meaning is actually saying,

  1913. I'm not a man because I don't want to be a man.

  1914. Yes.

  1915. I'm not a man.

  1916. Yeah.

  1917. Yeah.

  1918. Yeah.

  1919. Yeah.

  1920. Yeah.

  1921. Yeah.

  1922. Yeah.

  1923. Yeah.

  1924. Yes.

  1925. Yeah.

  1926. That's really helpful.

  1927. Thanks, David.

1928. And I think that the truth is that,

1929. that it's possible for churches just to sort of baptize

1930. a kind of Christian pride, isn't it?

1931. That basically we look around and think we're slightly better

  1932. than everybody else.

1933. Or even that we think we're slightly worse than everybody else

1934. and feel crushed by that.

  1935. That's still pride.

1936. It's just, it's just pride meeting failure, isn't it?

  1937. Yeah.

  1938. Yeah.

  1939. Great.

  1940. Okay.

1941. I'm going to call it to an end there because we've got humility

  1942. again next week.

1943. And I would like us to sing.

1944. So let me pray and then we'll sing.

1945. Heavenly Father, we owe all things to you.

  1946. You are our creator.

  1947. Who knows all things.

1948. Who is in all places at all times.

1949. And who powerfully sustains all things by the power of your word.

1950. And Lord, we know very little.

1951. Only what you choose to reveal to us.

1952. We can only be in one place at one time,

1953. one brief moment of history.

1954. We have no power of our own.

1955. We don't even know that we'll be here tomorrow.

1956. And so, Lord, we cast our crowns before you and acknowledge you to be King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

1957. Thank you that you love us.

1958. We thank you that we find great joy in humbly trusting you as the giver of all good gifts.

1959. And we praise your name.

  1960. Amen.

  1961. Amen.
